Abstract
Acipenser gueldenstaedtii is one of the most cultured sturgeon species worldwide and of considerable economic value for caviar production. There are though considerable challenges around chronic stress responses due to increased summer temperatures, impacting sturgeons' immune responses and their susceptibility to opportunistic infections. The identification of molecular and cellular pathways involved in stress responses may contribute to identifying novel biomarkers reflective of fish health status, crucial for successful sturgeon aquaculture. Protein citrullination is a calcium-catalysed post-translational modification caused by peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs), altering target protein function and affecting protein interactions in physiological and pathobiological processes. PADs can also modulate extracellular vesicle (EVs) profiles, which play critical roles in cellular communication, via transport of their cargoes (proteins, including post-translationally modified proteins, genetic material and micro-RNAs). This study identified differences in EV signatures, and citrullinated proteins in sera from winter and summer farmed sturegeons. EVs were significantly elevated in sera of the summer chronically stressed group. The citrullinated proteins and associated gene ontology (GO) pathways in sera and serum-EVs of chronically heat stressed A. gueldenstaedtii, showed some changes, with specific citrullinated serum protein targets including alpa-2-macroglobulin, alpha globin, calcium-dependent secretion activator, ceruloplasmin, chemokine XC receptor, complement C3 isoforms, complement C9, plectin, selenoprotein and vitellogenin. In serum-EVs, citrullinated protein cargoes identified only in the chronically stressed summer group included alpha-1-antiproteinase, apolipoprotein B-100, microtubule actin crosslinking factor and histone H3. Biological gene ontology (GO) pathways related to citrullinated serum proteins in the chronically stressed group were associated with innate and adaptive immune responses, stress responses and metabolic processes. In serum-EVs of the heat-stressed group the citrullinome associated with various metabolic GO pathways. In addition to modified citrullinated protein content, Serum-EVs from the stressed summer group showed significantly increased levels of the inflammatory associated miR-155 and the hypoxia-associated miR-210, but significantly reduced levels of the growth-associated miR-206. Our findings highlight roles for protein citrullination and EV signatures in response to chronic heat stress in A. gueldenstaedtii, indicating a trade-off in immunity versus growth and may be of value for sturgeon aquaculture.

Abstract
Biofloc technology offers a viable choice for the rearing of fish seed by offering a safe and protected habitat for young fish. Nevertheless, it is crucial to establish a standardised stocking density and implement effective ameliorative steps in order to successfully utilise this technology. In this study, a 90-day investigation was conducted to assess the effect of stocking density and dietary vitamin C (Vit C) levels on the growth and immunity of Labeo gonius fry (1.03 ± 0.01 g) reared in a biofloc system. Three stocking density groups (5, 10 and 15 fish per 50 L) were established, and each experimental group was supplemented with three levels of Vit C (0, 500 and 1000 mg kg-1). The highest survival rate was observed in the lowest density group (five fish per 50 L) fed with 1000 mg kg-1 Vit C. A better feed conversion ratio and significantly higher protein efficiency ratio were found in the moderate stocking density group (10 fish per 50 L) fed with 500 mg kg-1 Vit C. Total leukocyte count (TLC), haemoglobin, and packed cell volume improved in Vit C-fed groups. The total erythrocyte count (TEC) increased in groups fed Vit C and stocked at lower densities (5 and 10 fish per 50 L). Total serum protein (TPP) content increased when Vit C was added at a rate of 500 mg kg-1. Serum glucose and cortisol levels were significantly reduced in Vit C-supplemented groups. Supplementation of Vit C at 500 mg kg-1 resulted in a significantly lower value of malondialdehyde (MDA). Thus, the findings confirm that the incorporation of Vit C in the basal diet promotes the growth and health status of L. gonius fry reared in the biofloc system at high-density rearing.

Abstract
Heat shock proteins (HSPs) play a crucial role in antioxidant systems, immune responses, and enzyme activation during stress conditions. Salinity changes can cause stress and energy expenditure in fish, resulting in mortality, especially in fingerlings. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between salinity and HSPs in stressed fish by assessing the effects of various HSP inducers (HSPis), including Pro-Tex® (800 mM), amygdalin (80 mM), and a novel synthetic compound derived from pirano piranazole (80 µM), on isolated cells from Sterlet Sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus) exposed to 13 ‰ salinity (S13). After liver, kidney, and gill cells were cultured, the HSPi compounds were treated in vitro in the presence and absence of salinity. The expression patterns of HSP27, HSP70, and HSP90 were assessed by Western blotting. Biochemical enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase), cortisol levels, and immune parameters (component 3, immunoglobulin M, and lysozyme) were measured before and after treatment with HSPis and HSPi + S13. According to these findings, HSPis positively modulate HSP expression, immune responses, and antioxidant levels. Furthermore, they increased in vitro cell survival by maintaining cortisol levels and biochemical enzyme activities in A. ruthenus under saline conditions (P < 0.0001). In conclusion, HSPis can increase A. ruthenus resistance to salinity stress. However, the results also indicated that these compounds can reverse the adverse effects of salinity. The effectiveness of this approach depends on further research into the effects of these ecological factors on the health status of the species, especially in vivo and in combination with other stresses.

Abstract
Nervous necrosis virus (NNV) is one of the greatest threats to Mediterranean aquaculture, infecting more than 170 fish species and causing mortalities up to 100% in larvae and juveniles of susceptible species. Intensive aquaculture implies stressed conditions that affect the welfare of fish and their ability to fight against infections. In fact, a higher susceptibility to NNV has been related to poor welfare conditions. In order to analyze the physiological link between stressed conditions and increased susceptibility to NNV, as well as its possible role in the pathogenesis of this disease, we reared shi drum (Umbrina cirrosa) juveniles (30.7 ± 3.10 g body weight), which are expected to be asymptomatic upon NNV infection, at three stocking densities (2, 15, and 30 kg/m3) for 27 days and subsequently challenged them with NNV. We firstly characterized the stressed conditions of the specimens before and after infection and recorded the mortalities, demonstrating that stressed specimens reared at 30 kg/m3 suffered mortalities. However, the viral loads in different tissues were similar in all experimental groups, allowing horizontal and vertical transmission of the virus from asymptomatic specimens. All of these data suggest that shi drum tolerates wide ranges of culture densities, although high densities might be a setback for controlling NNV outbreaks in this species. In an attempt to understand the molecular pathways orchestrating this susceptibility change in stressed conditions, we performed a transcriptomic analysis of four tissues under mock- and NNV-infected conditions. In addition to the modification of the exceptive pathways such as cell adhesion, leukocyte migration, cytokine interaction, cell proliferation and survival, and autophagy, we also observed a heavy alteration of the neuroactive ligand-receptor pathway in three of the four tissues analyzed. Our data also point to some of the receptors of this pathway as potential candidates for future pharmacological treatment to avoid the exacerbated immune response that could trigger fish mortalities upon NNV infection.

Abstract
The primary objective of this trial was to study the effects of stress caused by stocking density in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultured in the in-pond raceway system (IPRS). Fingerlings (Initial body weight = 30.00 ± 1.20 g) were reared at different stocking densities i.e. low stocking density (n = 13,000; 1.77 kg/m3), medium stocking density (MSD) (n = 17,000; 2.32 kg/m3), and high stocking density (HSD) (n = 21,000; 2.86 kg/m3), all confined within the raceways of the IPRS. Each group was studied in triplicates. The observed growth revealed a regression in the HSD treatment, evident in its reduced weight gain per fish per day, in contrast to other treatments. Survival rate across all treatments was above 99%. Notably, the HSD treatment exhibited an elevated level of cortisol; however, this intensified crowding stress did not significantly undermine the nutritional value of the fish in HSD and other experimental treatments. Furthermore, an elevation in the levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase was noted within the HSD treatment in comparison to the other treatments to reduce the damage caused by reactive oxygen species. As the trial proceeded, functions of digestive enzymes like amylase, protease, and lipase diminished consistently across all treatments. This could possibly signify a deliberate redirection of energy resources toward stress alleviation rather than the usual digestive processes. In summation, it can be reasonably deduced that a stocking density of approximately 2.32 kg/m3 (MSD) emerges as the optimal threshold for effectively cultivating tilapia within an intensive aquaculture framework.

Abstract
The Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) is a critically endangered aquatic fish. Health monitoring and welfare assessments are critical for the conservation of Chinese sturgeon. In this study, biochemical parameters of serum and skin mucus in Chinese sturgeon were examined to evaluate the potential biomarkers. Serum and mucous samples were obtained from Chinese sturgeon, and the levels of total protein (TP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), lactic acid (LD), acid phosphatase (ACP), lysozyme (LYZ), glucose (GLU), and cortisol were determined. The concentrations of ALT, AST, cortisol, and LYZ were significantly higher in the mucous group than those in the serum group (p < 0.05). In addition, the concentrations of ALP, ACP, LD, LDH, CK, and TP were significantly higher level in the serum group than those in the mucous group (p < 0.05). Moreover, the correlations between serum and mucous biochemical parameters were established. Statistical analysis showed a positive correlation between serum and skin mucous markers (ACP, cortisol, and LYZ). AST versus ALT in serum and mucus showed a significant positive correlation (p < 0.01). A significant positive correlation was found between cortisol and CK in mucus (p < 0.01). Moreover, LD versus LDH in serum showed a significant but weak positive correlation (p < 0.01). Principal component analysis revealed a complete separation between the serum and mucous groups, with the biomarkers that contributed the most being ALP, TP, ALT, and AST. This study provides baseline data and reference intervals for serum and mucous biochemical parameters in presumably healthy Chinese sturgeons. The current study has important implications for the development of conservation strategies and the conservation status of critically endangered species.

Abstract
Diazinon (DZN) is an organophosphate pesticide frequently used in agriculture and released into aquatic environments. In this study, sterlet sturgeon cells were exposed to DZN to investigate possible defense mechanisms via HSP induction (HSPi). Liver, kidney, and gill cells of Acipenser ruthenus were isolated and cultured and then treated with HSPi (Pro-Tex®, amygdalin, and a novel pirano-piranazole-based synthesized compound: SZ) in the presence and absence of DZN. MTT assays were used to evaluate the effects of different HSPis and their combinations with DZN. Western blotting analysis was conducted to evaluate HSP27, HSP70, and HSP90 expression patterns in each group. The highest rates of caspase-3 and caspase-8 activities were found in the DZN group, whereas HSPi treatment resulted in the lowest rates. The combination of HSPi+DZN resulted in increased HSP levels and antioxidant parameters but decreased cortisol, immune parameters, and metabolic enzymes. Many of the studied parameters (caspases, acetylcholinesterase, antioxidant, immune, and metabolic parameters) showed significant correlations with HSP expression, indicating that HSPs may be associated with markers of sterlet cell health. The results of this study demonstrate that using HSP inducers may be a powerful and reliable way to increase A. ruthenus resistance prior to exposure to DZN.

Abstract
Natural herbs are excellent alternatives to synthetic compounds to enhance the growth performance and health status of fish. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of black cardamom (Amomum subulatum) extract (BCE) as an herbal supplement in improving the growth, antioxidant status, haematology, and serum biochemistry of Catla catla. The acclimatized fish (N = 900; average initial weight = 14.44 ± 0.33 g) were allocated into five groups (60 fish/group in triplicate) in hapas (4 × 2 × 2.5 ft) and provided with feed containing 0 (control), 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 g/kg BCE for 90 days before being subjected to 8 days of crowding stress. After 90 days, significantly higher feed utilization and growth were observed in all BCE-fed treatments compared to the control; however, the maximum values of these parameters were noted in the 2 g/kg BCE-fed treatment. Moreover, the BCE-fed groups exhibited a significant increase in antioxidant indices (glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase), with a significant reduction in malondialdehyde levels, indicating a higher antioxidant capacity compared to the control. Significant improvements in haematological parameters, such as an increase in haematocrit, haemoglobin and red blood cells and a decrease in white blood cells, were observed in BCE-fed treatments compared to the control. Furthermore, BCE-fed groups showed a significant decrease in serum glucose, cortisol and triglycerides, while total protein, globulin and albumin levels were significantly higher compared with the control. During the feeding trial of 90 days, no mortality was observed; however, the lowest cumulative mortality was noted in the 2 g/kg BCE group after crowding stress of 8 days. In conclusion, the use of BCE in feed can enhance the growth performance, antioxidant status, haematology, and serum biochemistry of C. catla and improve the resistance against crowding stress. The optimum levels of BCE for C. catla were estimated based on weight gain % (1.78 g/kg; R2 = 0.97), feed conversion ratio (1.65 g/kg; R2 = 0.98), MDA content (1.66 g/kg; R2 = 0.93) and serum lysozyme activity (1.72 g/kg; R2 = 1) using broken-line regression analysis.

Abstract
In vertebrates, insulin-like growth like factors (IGFs) play an important role in growth and other physiological processes. The GH-IGF axis is considered a valuable tool to monitor fish growth performance. Herein, we report the molecular characterization of igf-1, igf-2, and β-actin transcripts and relative expression of igf-1 and igf-2 in the liver and muscle tissue of cage-reared butter catfish, Ompok bimaculatus, in response to different stocking densities (T1, 15 fingerlings m-3; T2, 25 fingerlings m-3; and T3, 35 fingerlings m-3) over 180 days of culture duration. The length of the partial amplified transcript sequence of Obigf-1, Obigf-2, and Obβ-actin was 325, 438, and 924 bp, respectively. Phylogenetically, Obigf-1 and Obigf-2 were closely clustered with catfishes, viz., Clarias magur, Bagarius yarrelli, and Silurus asotus. The expression of igf-1 was significantly downregulated in the liver at higher densities after 120 days as biomass in the cages increased, while igf-2 expression did not change with the stocking densities over the culture period. Cortisol concentration was significantly elevated in T3 groups post 150 days of the culture period and correlated negatively with the expression of igf-1 (p < 0.05) and igf-2 (p > 0.05). Environmental parameters, pH, TDS, hardness, conductivity, and alkalinity showed a significant positive correlation with hepatic IGF expression. Our study indicates that the liver-derived igf-1 plays a more important role in the regulation of growth in response to culture density in the species studied, and thus, igf-1 can be used effectively as a biomarker for growth. Furthermore, this study will help in planning a proper harvest schedule and optimize the culture practices of O. bimaculatus in an open water cage system.

Abstract
High stocking densities have negative effects on fish. However, the mechanism mediating density perception and growth inhibition is still unknown. This study was conducted to confirm the occurrence of growth inhibition and evaluate changes in growth-related factors in fish reared under high-stocking-density conditions and to determine the role of vision in density perception of medaka. In the graduated-stocking experiment, growth inhibition was clearly observed in fish reared at higher densities, although environmental factors, such as water quality, dissolved oxygen, and feeding conditions, were the same in each experimental group. Differences in growth were observed between the 6-fish and 8-fish groups, indicating that medaka have a superior sense that allows them to accurately perceive the number of individuals in their surroundings. In the pseudo-high stocking experiment, the inner 2-L tank in both groups contained six fish; however, the outer 3-L tank in the pseudo group contained several fish, while that of the control group contained only water. Growth inhibition was observed among the fish in the inner tank of the pseudo group despite having similar spatial density with the control group. These findings suggest that vision is important for density perception. The gene expression of growth-related and metabolic-regulatory hormones decreased in the high-density group. Furthermore, neuropeptide Y expression increased, while pro-opiomelanocortin expression decreased in the high-density group. This study is the first to report that fish can visually perceive density and the resulting growth inhibition, and concluded that medaka is a suitable model for studying density effects and perception in fish.

Abstract
Changes in salinity is a stressful and energy-consuming process in fish which give rise to mortalities, especially in fish fingerlings that are more sensitive during the early stages of their life. In the present study, the effects of three salinities, 3‰ (downstream of river), 8‰ (estuarine), and 13‰ (the maximum salinity in the Caspian Sea), on HSP70 gene expression, cortisol level, immune response (lysozyme, complement C3, IgM), and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, T-AOC) of the stellate sturgeon fingerlings in the presence of HSP inducer compound (TEX-OE®) were evaluated. Our results showed that levels of plasma cortisol and heat shock protein (HSP70) in Acipenser stellatus fingerlings increased due to salinity changes. In the presence of the HSP inducer, HSP70 expression in both gill and liver was significantly increased, whereas cortisol level was notably decreased. Exposure to salinity changes resulted in an increase in antioxidant defense activities (SOD, CAT, and T-AOC) and immune response (lysozyme, IgM, and C3) in the presence of an HSP inducer. In conclusion, an HSP-inducing compounds can have a positive effect in strengthening the immunity and antioxidant system of sturgeon fingerlings by increasing the expression of the HSP70 gene against salinity fluctuations and generally increase the body's physiological tolerance.

Abstract
This study was designed to examine the protective effects of the extract of mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaves (EML) on crucian carp (Carassius auratus) against a high stocking density, Cu exposure and trichlorfon exposure, which adversely impact fish growth performance, feed intake and fish locomotion. High stocking densities decreased the activities of amylase, lipase, trypsin, Na+/K+-ATPase and alkaline phosphatase (AKP), and increased the content of malonaldehyde (MDA) in fish digestive organs, indicating an impairment of the digestive function and a disturbance of the antioxidant status. Cu exposure increased the activities of glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) and glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) in fish digestive organs, suggesting the activation of amino acid metabolism. Furthermore, trichlorfon exposure reduced the activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glutathione reductase (GR), GOT and GPT, and the capacities of the anti-superoxide anion (ASA) and anti-hydroxyl radical (AHR) in fish muscles, indicating a disruption of the bioenergetic homeostasis and antioxidant status. Our present study indicates that dietary EML supplementation relieved the detrimental effects induced by these stressors.

Abstract
Pelteobagrus fulvidraco is a freshwater fish commonly raised in rice fields, yet the optimal stocking density for this species remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the appropriate stocking density of P. fulvidraco in integrated rice-fish farming systems. Three different stocking densities--low density (LD, 125 g/m2), middle density (MD, 187.5 g/m2), and high density (HD, 250 g/m2)--were set up to evaluate P. fulvidraco's growth performance, stress indices, immune function, antioxidant status, and lipid metabolism after 90 days of farming. The results indicated that HD treatment had a detrimental effect on P. fulvidraco's growth parameters. HD treatment led to an increase in cortisol (Cor) and lactate (La) levels, but a decrease in glucose (Glu) content in serum. After 90 days of farming, an immune response accompanied by the increase of complement 3 (C3), C4, and immunoglobulin M (IgM) was observed in the HD group. Meanwhile, HD treatment induced oxidative stress and altered antioxidative status evidenced by the levels of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in serum or liver. Additionally, the lipid metabolism-related genes including lipoprotein lipase (lpl), peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor (pparα), carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (cpt-1), and sterol regulatory element binding protein-1 (srebp-1) were markedly downregulated in the HD and/or MD group after 90 days of farming. In conclusion, this study contributes to a better understanding of P. fulvidraco's response to different stocking densities in integrated rice-fish farming systems. We suggest that the appropriate stocking density for P. fulvidraco in these farming systems should be below 250 g/m2, considering both fish growth and physiological responses.

Abstract
Olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus is a representative culture species in South Korea. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs) have received increased attention because they can provide sustainable and environmentally friendly productivity. However, to maintain economic sustainability, the system generally requires high productivity, achieved through a high stocking density, which compromises animal welfare. The reduction in growth based on the stocking density may be due to the social hierarchy resulting from the growth suppression of subordinate individuals. Species, size, culture systems, and other management regimes can affect the social hierarchy. Therefore, a more practical approach must be taken to adjust the stocking density for a particular fish species and fish size in a specific culture system. This study investigated the effect of stocking density on juvenile olive flounder in an RAS. Juvenile olive flounder (61.0 ± 0.3 g) were initially stocked at 3.29, 4.84, 7.14, and 8.56 kg/m2 (T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively). After 8 weeks, growth performance, in terms of feed conversion, specific growth rate, and daily feed intake rate, was measured. In addition, the blood levels of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), growth hormone, glucose, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, and glutamic pyruvic transaminase and the whole-body composition were evaluated as stress indicators. Growth performance increased as stocking density increased, but fish at the highest stocking density showed signs of growth reduction toward the end of the experiment. In addition, as stocking density increased, IGF-1 decreased, and cortisol increased. The whole-body protein level was significantly lower in T4 compared with the other treatments. Olive flounder seemed to tolerate a stocking density up to 20.16 kg/m2. Based on the growth performance, hematological response, and whole-body composition results in the present study, a final stocking density of 20 kg/m2 (from the initial stocking density of 4.84-7.14 kg/m2) may be desirable for juvenile olive flounder in an RAS for fish weighing ~60-180 g.

Abstract
A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary yeast culture (YC) on health status in digestive tract of juvenile Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus Vannamei. Shrimps (initial weight: 3.33 ± 0.06 g) were fed with graded levels of dietary YC (control, 0.3%, 0.5% and 1.0%). Results of the present study showed that villus height and the ratio between villus height and crypt depth in the digestive tract of juvenile shrimp was significantly increased by dietary 0.5% and 1.0%YC (P < 0.05). Besides, dietary 0.5% and 1.0%YC significantly activities of phenoloxidase (PO), lysozyme (LZ), acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) (P < 0.05), significantly up-regulated mRNA levels of prophenoloxidase (propo), lysozyme (lz), anti-lipopolysaccharide factor (alf), crustin and penaienadin (P < 0.05) and down-regulated mRNA levels of caspase-1, nuclear factor κB p65 (nf-κbp65) myeloid differentiation primary response protein (myd88) and toll like receptor (tlr) in the digestive tract of juvenile shrimp (P < 0.05). Compared with the control, dietary 0.5%YC increased Chao1 index in the digestive tract of juvenile shrimp. In addition, compared with the control, dietary 0.5% and 1.0%YC significantly increased relative abundance of Lactobacillus (P < 0.05). It can be concluded that dietary YC made positive contribution to health status in digestive tract of juvenile shrimp through improving morphology and microbiota, enhancing immune function, and inhibiting inflammation of digestive tract.

Abstract
The present study was conducted for 240 days to evaluate the effects of stocking density based on growth attributes, digestive enzymes, muscular composition, biochemical and physiological responses of Labeo rohita fingerlings in tropical inland open water cages. L. rohita (30.35 ± 1.08 g) were randomly distributed into three treatments, namely low stocking density, LSD (10 m-3), medium stocking density, MSD (20 m-3) and high stocking density, HSD (30 m-3) in triplicates. Fish were fed twice daily with CIFRI CAGEGROW® floating feed (crude protein-28%, crude fat-4%). Fish growth and feed efficiency were higher (p < 0.05) in LSD, however, MSD registered a higher yield. Amylase and protease activity reduced whereas lipase activity increased with increasing stocking density. Muscle crude protein and crude fat formed an inverse correlation. The fillet quality deteriorated at higher stocking densities based on Muscle pH, drip loss and frozen leakage rate. The stress biomarkers level (glucose, cortisol, superoxide dismutase and catalase) increased in serum under crowding conditions. Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase and glutamate pyruvate transaminase in serum were significantly increased in HSD. Serum protein levels decreased with the increase in stocking densities. Body ionic imbalance (Na+, Cl- and K+) was observed under crowding stress. Based on growth attributes and multiple biomarker responses, L. rohita @ 10 m-3 was found to be the optimum density for inland open water cage culture.

Abstract
One of the most important issues in improving the competitiveness of the fish production sector is to improve the growth rate of fish. The genetic background to this trait is at present poorly understood. In this study, we compared the relative gene expression levels of the Akt1s1, FGF, GH, IGF1, MSTN, TLR2, TLR4 and TLR5 genes in blood in groups of common carps (Cyprinus carpio), which belonged to different growth types and phenotypes. Fish were divided into groups based on growth rate (normal group: n = 6; slow group: n = 6) and phenotype (scaled group: n = 6; mirror group: n = 6). In the first 18 weeks, we measured significant differences (p < 0.05) between groups in terms of body weight and body length. Over the next 18 weeks, the fish in the slow group showed more intense development. In the same period, the slow group was characterized by lower expression levels for most genes, whereas GH and IGF1 mRNA levels were higher compared to the normal group. We found that phenotype was not a determining factor in differences of relative expression levels of the genes studied.

Abstract
We investigated blood gas, hematological and biochemical parameters, and gill morphology of Lophiosilurus alexandri juveniles submitted to hypoxia for 48 h, followed by recovery for 48 h. A total of 48 juveniles (360.0 ± 141.6 g) were distributed among eight tanks (120 L) and subjected to hypoxia condition (water with dissolved oxygen at 2.12 ± 0.90 mg L-1) or normoxia (at 5.60 ± 0.31 mg L-1). Blood gas values (pH, PvCO2, PvO2, sO2, HCO3-, stHCO3-, and base excess) in hypoxia were significantly different from normoxia, while for lactate and the electrolytes (K+, Na+, Cl-, and Ca2+) there was no significant change among treatments. The erythrocytes differed significantly between normoxia and hypoxia at 72 h (24 h of recovery), while for hemoglobin and hematocrit there were no significant differences. There was a significant difference in glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol for both normoxia and hypoxia, while plasma protein remained unchanged. All gill components (epithelial cells, erythrocytes, pillar cells, mucous cells, ionocytes, undifferentiated cells, and blood capillary lumen) differed significantly between normoxia and hypoxia. A reduction in the length of the primary lamella was observed in the hypoxia and recovery treatments, when compared to normoxia. The secondary branchial lamella showed no significant difference for both treatments. Juveniles of Lophiosilurus alexandri adapted well to hypoxia for 48 h, as they were able to adjust most of their physiological variables to survive this stress condition. After 48 h of hypoxia recovery, fish showed parameters similar to animals in normoxia. Thus, the present study shows that the tolerance to hypoxia conditions of L. alexandri, together with other important beneficial characteristics of the species, such as the high meat quality and high commercial value, demonstrates its great potential for production among regional species.

Abstract
Simple Summary The disappearance of many wild sturgeon populations from natural waters and the high demand for sturgeon products (meat and caviar) have led to increased aquacultural production of sturgeons. The development of recirculating aquaculture systems requires the optimization of rearing technologies so that high stocking densities have a minimal impact on fish health. Due to the ease with which sturgeons hybridize, the optimization of sturgeon aquaculture technologies involves the identification of hybrid lines with high technological performance and high stress resistance. One of the best known hybrids is that between the beluga and the sterlet (bester). The present study aims to evaluate the hybrid obtained by crossing the bester (female) with the beluga (male) as a new candidate for the recirculating aquaculture systems. The results show better performance and better density adaptation of the bester × beluga hybrid compared with the bester hybrid. However, at higher stocking densities, a negative impact on growth performance and physiological response was observed. Abstract The study aimed to compare the growth performance and physiological responses of bester (B) and backcrossed bester ♀ × beluga ♂ (BB) in response to crowding stress under different stocking densities, as well as to establish a threshold stocking density for rearing BB in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) without welfare impairment. For this purpose, in the first trial (T1), B (181.15 ± 21.21 g) and BB fingerlings (181.98 ± 28.65 g) were reared in two stocking densities of 2 kg/m2 and 4 kg/m2 in fiberglass tanks (1 m3) for 6 weeks. In a parallel trial (T2), the BB hybrids (335.24 ± 39.30 g) were kept in four initial stocking densities, ranging from 5 kg/m2 to 12 kg/m2. The results of T1 revealed better growth indices (i.e., final mean weight, weight gain, specific growth rate) at lower stocking densities for both hybrids; however, in terms of growth performance, the BB hybrid showed better results when compared with the B hybrid. BB hybrids registered significantly (p < 0.05) lower serum cortisol and MDA and higher lysozyme than B hybrids, showing higher tolerance to crowding stress. Nevertheless, at higher densities, selected serum parameters (i.e., hematological indices, cortisol, glucose, protein, malondialdehyde, lysozyme) and growth performance indices used to evaluate the hybrids indicate that high stocking density could affect the growth and welfare of BB hybrids, and that the selected serum parameters could be used as good indicators for chronic stress caused by overcrowding conditions.

Abstract
In the current study, we investigated the effect of a probiotic bacterium (Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 7469) microencapsulated with alginate and hi-maize starch and coated with chitosan on improving growth factors, body composition, blood chemistry, and the immune response of rainbow trout (initial weight: 18.41 ± 0.32 g). Four experimental diets were formulated to feed fish for 60 days. They were control diet without any additive (C), diet added with beads without probiotic (E), a probiotic sprayed to the diet (L.r), and encapsulated probiotic supplemented diet (E-L.r). The results indicated that feeding with E-Lr significantly improved weight gain (84.98 g) and feed conversion ratio (0.95) compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). Also, fish fed E-Lr diet had a significantly higher value of whole-body protein (17.51%), total protein in the blood (4.98 g/dL), lysozyme (30.66 U/mL), alternative complement pathway hemolytic activity (134 U/mL), superoxide dismutase (203 U/mg protein), and catalase (528.33 U/mg protein) (P < 0.05) as compared to those fed the control diet. Similarly, a higher relative expression of immune-related genes such as interleukin-1 (Il-1) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-1α) were reported in those fed E-L.r and L.r diets respectively. Interestingly, the fish fed dietary E-L.r had a significantly lower value of lipid in the whole body (4.82%) and cholesterol in the blood (160.67%) in comparison with those fed the control diet (P < 0.05). At the end of the experiment, all groups were challenged by Yersinia ruckeri where the survival rate of rainbow trout fed dietary E-L.r (70.36%) was statistically higher than that of the others (P < 0.05). Overall, the results suggested that encapsulated probiotic Lact. rhamnosus ATCC 7469 acted better than unencapsulated probiotic and has a potential to improve growth performance, flesh quality, and the immune response of rainbow trout.

Abstract
A 10-week feeding trial was run to investigate the separate and simultaneous effects of exogenous enzymes (Enz), probiotics (Pro), and Pro-Enz mixtures on the hematology indices, serum biochemical parameters, and innate-immunity status of juvenile Siberian sturgeon. The fish (138.06 ± 3.64 g) were randomly dispersed into 12 tanks (20 individuals per tank) and fed with Enz (Phytase, protease, and xylanase), Pro (Pediococcus pentosaceus and Lactococcus lactis), and Pro-Enz cocktail. At the end of the feeding bioassay, the highest values of red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit level, and lymphocyte percentage followed by the lowest neutrophil percentage were obtained in Pro-Enz treatment (P < 0.05). Despite a significantly lower level of alkaline phosphatase in the fish fed with Pro supplemented diet (P < 0.05), no significant difference was found in the serum level of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase among the experimental groups (P > 0.05). Total protein content was significantly upregulated in serum and skin mucus samples from those fed with supplemented diets compared to the control group (P < 0.05). In both serum and skin mucus samples, higher immune responses in terms of lysozyme activity, immunoglobulin M, total protein was seen in Pro-Enz treatment compared to the control group followed by the serum complement components (P < 0.05). The results indicate that the combinational supplementation of Siberian sturgeon diet with the exogenous enzymes and probiotics modulates the physiometabolic responses and innate immune system to a higher grade than their individual supplementation.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the acute response of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) juveniles exposed to temperature, salinity and ammonia stress. Radioimmunoassay was used to evaluate cortisol levels, whereas insulin-like growth factors (igf1 and igf2), myostatin (mstn), heat-shock protein 70 (hsp70) and glucocorticoid receptor (gr) gene expression was assessed trough Real-Time PCR. The presence and localization of IGF-I and HSP70 were investigated by immunohistochemistry. In all the stress conditions, a significant increase in cortisol levels was observed reaching higher values in the thermic and chemical stress groups. Regarding fish growth markers, igf1 gene expression was significantly higher only in fish subjected to heat shock stress while, at 60 min, igf2 gene expression was significantly lower in all the stressed groups. Temperature and ammonia changes resulted in a higher mstn gene expression. Molecular analyses on stress response evidenced a time dependent increase in hsp70 gene expression, that was significantly higher at 60 min in fish exposed to heat shock and chemical stress. Furthermore, the same experimental groups were characterized by a significantly higher gr gene expression respect to the control one. Immunostaining for IGF-I and HSP70 antibodies was observed in skin, gills, liver, and digestive system of gilthead seabream juveniles.

Abstract
Low levels of stresses cause eustress while high stressful situations result in distress. Female rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was reared under crowded conditions to mimic the stressful environment of intensive fishery production. Trout was stocked for 300 days with initial densities of 4.6 ± 0.02 (final: 31.1 ± 0.62), 6.6 ± 0.03 (final: 40.6 ± 0.77), and 8.6 ± 0.04 (final: 49.3 ± 1.09) kg/m3 as SD1, SD2 and SD3. We assessed molecular, cellular and organismal parameters to understand the flexibility of neuro-endocrine-immune network during stress. Trout with higher initial density (SD3) displayed the slightly activated hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis with positively increased antioxidant enzyme activities and anti-inflammatory cytokine transcriptions on day 60 or 120. These results indicated that low level of stress was capable of exerting eustress by activating neuro-endocrine-immune network with beneficial adaptation. Transition from eustress to distress was induced by the increased intensity and duration of crowding stress on day 240 and 300. The prolonged activation of HPI axis resulted in suppressed growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor (GH-IGF) axis, up-regulated cytokine transcriptions and severe reactive oxygen species stress. Stress means reset of neuro-endocrine-immune network with energy expenditure and redistribution. Digestive ability of trout with distress was also inhibited on day 240 and 300, indicating a decreased total energy supplement and energy distribution for functions are not necessary for surviving such as growth and reproduction. Consequently, we observed the dyshomeostasis of energy balance and neuro-endocrine-immune network of trout during long-term crowding conditions.
