Bimetallic metal–organic frameworks and MOF-derived composites: Recent progress on electro- and photoelectrocatalytic applications

Tuning the local electronic structure of Co15V-ZIF through bimetallic synergies as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Co-based bimetallic zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have been shown as promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, but their electronic structure's influence on the catalytic performance for overall water splitting still needs further investigation. In this study, Co15V-ZIF, structured as two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet arrays, are grown on nickel foam using one-step co-precipitation strategy. Owing to the synergistic effects of vanadium (V) and cobalt (Co) reasonably regulating the electronic structure, the synthesized bimetallic ZIFs demonstrate superior catalytic performance, which required the overpotentials of only 227 and 68 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. Furthermore, the water electrolyzer assembled with bimetallic ZIF as cathode and anode exhibits the capability to achieve 10 mA cm-2 at a low cell voltage of 1.57 V. In situ Raman spectroscopy reveals that the introduction of V facilitates the formation of V-CoOOH, the real active site for OER, at lower applied potentials. Besides, it induces a local acidic environment on V-Co(OH)2, the real active sites, thereby enhancing the HER performance of the sample. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations further show that the synergistic effects of V and Co induce electron redistribution, thereby improving electrical conductivity, reducing the energy barrier for water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption, which promotes the formation of H3O+ and triggering H3O+-induced water reduction in alkaline media. This work provides new insight into tailoring electronic structures to rationally design highly efficient ZIF electrocatalysts.

Metal ion and organic ligand disubstituted bimetallic metal-organic framework nanosheets for high-performance alkaline zinc-based batteries

Herein, a disubstitution strategy of metal ions and organic ligands is employed to synthesize metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets with a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure and a highly active metal-sulfur (M-S, M = Co and Ni) region. The obtained MOFs//Zn batteries exhibit excellent electrochemical properties and the electrochemical reaction mechanism was elucidated through a series of ex situ characterizations.

Multi-metallic MOF based composites for environmental applications: synergizing metal centers and interactions

The escalating threat of environmental issues to both nature and humanity over the past two decades underscores the urgency of addressing environmental pollutants. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly promising materials for tackling these challenges. Since their rise in popularity, extensive research has been conducted on MOFs, spanning from design and synthesis to a wide array of applications, such as environmental remediation, gas storage and separation, catalysis, sensors, biomedical and drug delivery systems, energy storage and conversion, and optoelectronic devices, etc. MOFs possess a multitude of advantageous properties such as large specific surface area, tunable porosity, diverse pore structures, multi-channel design, and molecular sieve capabilities, etc., making them particularly attractive for environmental applications. MOF-based composites inherit the excellent properties of MOFs and also exhibit unique physicochemical properties and structures. The tailoring of central coordinated metal ions in MOFs is critical for their adaptability in environmental applications. Although many reviews on monometallic, bimetallic, and polymetallic MOFs have been published, few reviews focusing on MOF-based composites with monometallic, bimetallic, and multi-metallic centers in the context of environmental pollutant treatment have been reported. This review addresses this gap by providing an in-depth overview of the recent progress in MOF-based composites, emphasizing their applications in hazardous gas sensing, electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA), and pollutant degradation in both aqueous and atmospheric environments and highlighting the importance of the number and type of metal centers present. Additionally, the various categories of MOFs are summarized. MOF-based composites demonstrate significant promise in addressing environmental challenges, and this review provides a clear and valuable perspective on their potential in environmental applications.

Recent advancements and prospects in noble and non-noble electrocatalysts for materials methanol oxidation reactions

The direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) represents a highly promising alternative power source for small electronics and automobiles due to its low operating temperatures, high efficiency, and energy density. The methanol oxidation process (MOR) constitutes a fundamental chemical reaction occurring at the positive electrode of a DMFC. Pt-based materials serve as widely utilized MOR electrocatalysts in DMFCs. Nevertheless, various challenges, such as sluggish reaction rates, high production costs primarily attributed to the expensive Pt-based catalyst, and the adverse effects of CO poisoning on the Pt catalysts, hinder the commercialization of DMFCs. Consequently, endeavors to identify an alternative catalyst to Pt-based catalysts that mitigate these drawbacks represent a critical focal point of DMFC research. In pursuit of this objective, researchers have developed diverse classes of MOR electrocatalysts, encompassing those derived from noble and non-noble metals. This review paper delves into the fundamental concept of MOR and its operational mechanisms, as well as the latest advancements in electrocatalysts derived from noble and non-noble metals, such as single-atom and molecule catalysts. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis of the constraints and prospects of MOR electrocatalysts, encompassing those based on noble metals and those based on non-noble metals, has been undertaken.

Bimetallic MOF-based electrochemical sensor for determination of paracetamol in spiked human plasma

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with their exceptional properties have the potential to revolutionize the field of electrochemistry and pave the way for new and exciting applications. MOFs is an excellent choice as an active electrocatalyst component in the fabrication of electrochemical sensors. Here, bimetallic NiCo-MOFs, monometallic Ni-MOFs, and Co-MOFs were fabricated to modify the carbon paste electrode. Moreover, the ratio between Co and Ni within the bimetallic MOFs was optimized. Our aim in this work is to synthesize different compositions from bimetallic MOFs and systematically compare their catalytic activity with mono-metallic MOFs on paracetamol. The structure and properties of the 2D NiCo-MOFs were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and electrochemical method. Bimetallic Ni0.75Co0.25-MOFs modified carbon paste sensor displayed the optimum sensing performance for the electrochemical detection of paracetamol. A linear response over the range 6.00 × 10- 7 to 1.00 × 10- 4 M with a detection limit of 2.10 × 10- 8 M was obtained. The proposed method was applied to detect paracetamol in spiked human plasma and to determine paracetamol in the presence of its major toxic impurity, p-aminophenol. These findings suggest the considerable potential use of the newly developed sensor as a point-of-care tool for detecting paracetamol and p-aminophenol in the future.

A cobalt(II) coordination polymer-derived catalyst engineered via temperature-induced semi-reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) dehydration for efficient liquid-phase epoxidation of olefins

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformations provide more avenues for phase transitions, which have piqued great interest in crystal engineering. In this work, a 3D Co(II)-based coordination polymer (CP), {Co2(OH2)8(btec)}·4H2O (1), (where (btec)4- = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate) undergoes SCSC transition upon heating at 180 °C to afford an anhydrous phase [Co2(btec)] (1'). Room-temperature water-vapour induced semi-reversible SCSC transformation of 1' involves condensation of two water molecules coordinating to the metal cluster, yielding a new framework [Co2(OH2)2(btec)] (2). These SCSC transitions were accomplished through a sequential bond breaking and new bond formation process which was accompanied by colour changes from orange (1) → violet (1') → pink (2). All materials were structurally elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and further established by various analytical techniques. According to SCXRD data, all the frameworks possess octahedral geometries around the cobalt(II) sphere. SCXRD studies further revealed that 1 is a polymeric architecture with a binodal 4-c sql topology while 1' and 2 possess (3,6)-c kgd and (4,6)-c scu 3D nets, respectively. By virtue of multitopicity exhibited by the tetracarboxylate, the coordination number of the linker around the Co(II) sphere increased from four (in 1) to eight (in 1') and then decreased to six (in 2). Most interestingly, permanent porosity could be observed for the dihydrate 2, originated from potential void space as substantiated by dinitrogen (N2) sorption isotherm. These porous frameworks were active catalysts for the aerobic epoxidation of the model substrate cyclohexene using molecular oxygen (O2) as the final oxidant in the presence of the sacrificial i-butyraldehyde (IBA) reductant. For using the dihydrous phase 2, cyclohexene and various other olefins were catalytically oxidised to their corresponding epoxides with up to 38.5% conversion and 99.0% selectivity. The catalyst 2 can be expediently recycled in four runs without significant loss of activity. This research demonstrates that a little innovation in the active-site-engineered organic-inorganic hybrid materials can significantly enhance the catalytic performance and selectivity of coordination polymer-derived heterogeneous catalysts.

The use of bimetallic metal-organic frameworks as restoration materials for pollutants removal from water environment

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (BMOFs) are a class of functional porous materials constructed by coordination between nodes containing two different metal ions and organic ligands. Studies have shown that the catalytic activity of BMOFs is greatly improved owing to the adjustment of charge distribution and the increase of active sites as well as the synergistic effect between the bimetals, and the advantages of their large specific surface area, high porosity, unique structure and dispersed active centres make them available as important organic materials applied in the field of wastewater treatment. In this review, the preparation and construction methods for BMOFs in recent years are summarized, and we focus on their removal of different types of pollutants in the aqueous environment, including ions, dyes, pharmaceuticals or personal care products, phenolic compounds and microorganisms, as well as their corresponding removal mechanisms. In addition, we provide an outlook on their future opportunities and challenges in wastewater treatment.

Boosting Urea-Assisted Natural Seawater Electrolysis in 3D Leaf-Like Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheet Arrays Using Metal Node Engineering

Metal node engineering, which can optimize the electronic structure and modulate the composition of poor electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks, is of great interest for electrochemical natural seawater splitting. However, the mechanism underlying the influence of mixed-metal nodes on electrocatalytic activities is still ambiguous. Herein, a strategic design is comprehensively demonstrated in which mixed Ni and Co metal redox-active centers are uniformly distributed within NH2-Fe-MIL-101 to obtain a synergistic effect for the overall enhancement of electrocatalytic activities. Three-dimensional mixed metallic MOF nanosheet arrays, consisting of three different metal nodes, were in situ grown on Ni foam as a highly active and stable bifunctional catalyst for urea-assisted natural seawater splitting. A well-defined NH2-NiCoFe-MIL-101 reaches 1.5 A cm-2 at 360 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 0.6 A cm-2 at 295 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in freshwater, substantially higher than its bimetallic and monometallic counterparts. Moreover, the bifunctional NH2-NiCoFe-MIL-101 electrode exhibits eminent catalytic activity and stability in natural seawater-based electrolytes. Impressively, the two-electrode urea-assisted alkaline natural seawater electrolysis cell based on NH2-NiCoFe-MIL-101 needs only 1.56 mV to yield 100 mA cm-2, much lower than 1.78 V for alkaline natural seawater electrolysis cells and exhibits superior long-term stability at a current density of 80 mA cm-2 for 80 h.

Accurately Modulating Binuclear Metal Nodes of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Evolution

The accurate manipulation of the species and locations of catalytic centers is crucial for regulating the catalytic activity of catalysts, which is essential for their efficient design and development. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with coordinated metal sites are ideal materials for investigating the origin of catalytic activity. In this study, we present a Ni2-MOF featuring novel Ni-based binuclear nodes with open metal sites (OMSs) and saturated metal sites (SMSs). The nickel was replaced by iron to obtain Ni1Fe1-MOF. In the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction, Ni1Fe1-MOF exhibited an overpotential and Tafel slope of 370 mV@10 mA cm-2 and 87.06 mV dec-1, respectively, which were higher than those of Ni2-MOF (283 mV@10 mA cm-2 and 39.59 mV dec-1, respectively), demonstrating the superior performance of Ni1Fe1-MOF. Furthermore, theoretical calculations revealed that iron as an SMS may effectively regulate the electronic structure of the nickel catalytic center to reduce the free energy barrier ΔG*OH of the rate-determining step.

Novel electrocatalytic capacitive deionization with catalytic electrodes for selective phosphonate degradation: Performance and mechanism

Phosphonate is becoming a global interest and concern owing to its environment risk and potential value. Degradation of phosphonate into phosphate followed by the recovery is regarded as a promising strategy to control phosphonate pollution, relieve phosphorus crisis, and promote phosphorus cycle. Given these objectives, an anion-membrane-coated-electrode (A-MCE) doped with Fe-Co based carbon catalyst and cation-membrane-coated-electrode (C-MCE) doped with carbon-based catalyst were prepared as catalytic electrodes, and a novel electrocatalytic capacitive deionization (E-CDI) was developed. During charging process, phosphonate was enriched around A-MCE surface based on electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, and hydrogen bond. Meanwhile, Fe2+ and Co2+ were self-oxidized into Fe3+ and Co3+, forming a complex with enriched phosphonate and enabling an intramolecular electron transfer process for phosphonate degradation. Additionally, benefiting from the stable dissolved oxygen and high oxygen reduction reaction activity of C-MCE, hydrogen peroxide accumulated in E-CDI (158 μM) and thus hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were generated by activation. E-CDI provided an ideal platform for the effective reaction between ·OH and phosphonate, avoiding the loss of ·OH and triggering selective degradation of most phosphonate. After charging for 70 min, approximately 89.9% of phosphonate was degraded into phosphate, and phosphate was subsequently adsorbed by A-MCE. Results also showed that phosphonate degradation was highly dependent on solution pH and voltage, and was insignificantly affected by electrolyte concentration. Compared to traditional advanced oxidation processes, E-CDI exhibited a higher degradation efficiency, lower cost, and less sensitive to co-existed ions in treating simulated wastewaters. Self-enhanced and selective degradation of phosphonate, and in-situ phosphate adsorption were simultaneously achieved for the first time by a E-CDI system, showing high promise in treating organic-containing saline wastewaters.

Rational Design of Organic Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen and Oxygen Electrocatalytic Applications

Efficient electrocatalysts are pivotal for advancing green energy conversion technologies. Organic electrocatalysts, as cost-effective alternatives to noble-metal benchmarks, have garnered attention. However, the understanding of the relationships between their properties and electrocatalytic activities remains ambiguous. Plenty of research articles regarding low-cost organic electrocatalysts started to gain momentum in 2010 and have been flourishing recently though, a review article for both entry-level and experienced researchers in this field is still lacking. This review underscores the urgent need to elucidate the structure-activity relationship and design suitable electrode structures, leveraging the unique features of organic electrocatalysts like controllability and compatibility for real-world applications. Organic electrocatalysts are classified into four groups: small molecules, oligomers, polymers, and frameworks, with specific structural and physicochemical properties serving as activity indicators. To unlock the full potential of organic electrocatalysts, five strategies are discussed: integrated structures, surface property modulation, membrane technologies, electrolyte affinity regulation, and addition of anticorrosion species, all aimed at enhancing charge efficiency, mass transfer, and long-term stability during electrocatalytic reactions. The review offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of organic electrocatalysts and their practical applications, bridging the understanding gap and paving the way for future developments of more efficient green energy conversion technologies.

Novel competitive electrochemical impedance biosensor for the ultrasensitive detection of umami substances based on Pd/Cu-TCPP(Fe)

The development of biosensors capable of assessing umami intensity has elicited significant attention. However, the detection range of these biosensors is constrained by the sensing components and strategies used. In this study, we introduce a novel competitive, ultra-high-sensitivity impedance biosensor by utilizing composite nanomaterials and T1R1 as a composite signal probe. Pd/Cu-TCPP(Fe) had a substantial surface area, effectively enhancing the loading capacity of the T1R1 and thus augmenting the biosensor's recognition precision. Furthermore, the Pd/Cu-TCPP(Fe) elevated peroxidase-like activity catalyzed the formation of insoluble precipitates of 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN), resulting in cascaded amplification of the impedance signal. The remarkable catalytic activity of the composite signal probe endowed the biosensor with exceptional analytical performance, featuring a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.86 pg/mL and a linear detection range spanning from 10 to 10,000 pg/mL. Successful application of the biosensor for umami detection in fish was demonstrated, signifying its substantial potential in food-flavor evaluation.

Synthesis and Application of Task-Specific Bimetal-Organic Frameworks in the Synthesis of Biological Active Spiro-Oxindoles

The use of click chemistry as a smart and suitable method for the development of new heterogeneous catalysts is based on metal-organic frameworks as well as the production of organic compounds. The development of the click chemistry method can provide a new strategy to achieve superior properties of MOFs. Here, the two metals Co and Fe are used to create a bimetallic-organic framework. In the following, the click chemistry and postmodification method are well organized and an acidic heterogeneous porous catalyst is developed. This prepared catalyst was used as a highly efficient catalyst for the preparation of new spiro-oxindoles obtained through click chemistry with good to excellent yields (80-94%). This presented catalytic system can compete with the best reported catalytic systems. The findings showed that the presence of Co and Fe metals in the MOF, and the presence of the triazole ring on the catalyst, can increase the catalytic efficiencies. This study offers novel insights into the architecture of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), click chemistry, and biologically active compounds. Additionally, the research explores the antibacterial properties of the synthesized spiro-oxindoles and catalysts. The findings reveal significant antibacterial activities of the synthesized compounds against S. aureus, MRSA, and E. coli bacteria.

Design and Advanced Manufacturing of NU-1000 Metal-Organic Frameworks with Future Perspectives for Environmental and Renewable Energy Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a relatively new family of materials that attract lots of attention thanks to their unique features such as hierarchical porosity, active metal centers, versatility of linkers/metal nodes, and large surface area. Among the extended list of MOFs, Zr-based-MOFs demonstrate comparably superior chemical and thermal stabilities, making them ideal candidates for energy and environmental applications. As a Zr-MOF, NU-1000 is first synthesized at Northwestern University. A comprehensive review of various approaches to the synthesis of NU-1000 MOFs for obtaining unique surface properties (e.g., diverse surface morphologies, large surface area, and particular pore size distribution) and their applications in the catalysis (electro-, and photo-catalysis), CO2 reduction, batteries, hydrogen storage, gas storage/separation, and other environmental fields are presented. The review further outlines the current challenges in the development of NU-1000 MOFs and their derivatives in practical applications, revealing areas for future investigation.

Ionic liquid-assisted synthesis of N, F, and B co-doped BiOBr/Bi2Se3 on Mo2CTx for enhanced performance in hydrogen evolution reaction and supercapacitors

Heteroatom doping and heterojunction formation are effective strategies to enhance electrochemical performance. In this study, we present a novel approach that utilizes an ionic liquid-assisted synthesis method to fabricate a BiOBr-based material, which is subsequently loaded onto Mo2CTx via a selenization treatment to create a BiOBr/Bi2Se3 heterostructure, denoted as NBF-BiOBr/Bi2Se3/Mo2CTx. The incorporation of heteroatoms improves its hydrophilicity and electronegativity, while the formation of heterojunctions adjusts the electronic structure at the interface, resulting in lower OH-/H+ adsorption energy. The specific surface area of NBF-BiOBr/Bi2Se3/Mo2CTx is 193.1 m2/g. In hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) tests, NBF-BiOBr/Bi2Se3/Mo2CTx exhibits exceptional catalytic performance in acidic media, requiring only an overpotential of 109 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Furthermore, NBF-BiOBr/Bi2Se3/Mo2CTx demonstrates superior electrochemical performance in an asymmetric supercapacitor, with an energy density as high as 55.6 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 749.9 Wh kg-1. This work provides a novel approach for heteroatom doping and heterojunction synthesis, offering promising prospects for further advancements in the field.

Bimetallic metal organic framework/Ni doped ZnO nanomaterials modified carbon paste electrode for selective electrochemical determination of ciprofloxacin

In this work, an efficient and sensitive electrochemical sensor for the determination of ciprofloxacin (CIP) is reported. The sensor was prepared by using a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with a combination of bimetallic copper/cerium-based metal organic framework (Cu/Ce-MOF) and nickel doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (NZP). The modifiers were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and elemental mapping analysis (EDS). The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The developed electrode was employed for the detection of CIP by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under optimal conditions, the anodic peak current response of the electrode was linearly correlated with CIP concentration in the range of 0.75-100 μmol L-1 with a sensitivity of 1.29 μA μmol-1 L-1. The limit of detection and reproducibility of the method were 0.142 μmol L-1 and 2.7%, respectively. The developed sensor showed good selectivity to CIP against possible interferents. The method was applied to determine CIP in water, milk and urine samples. The results indicated that this method has potential to be applied in the analysis of residue CIP in complex matrices with high selectivity, and good reproducibility.

Highly Porous Metal-Organic Framework Entrapped by Cobalt Telluride-Manganese Telluride as an Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalyst

The electrochemical conversion of oxygen holds great promise in the development of sustainable energy for various applications, such as water electrolysis, regenerative fuel cells, and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Oxygen electrocatalysts are needed that are both highly efficient and affordable, since they can serve as alternatives to costly precious-metal-based catalysts. This aspect is particularly significant for their practical implementation on a large scale in the future. Herein, highly porous polyhedron-entrapped metal-organic framework (MOF)-assisted CoTe2/MnTe2 heterostructure one-dimensional nanorods were initially synthesized using a simple hydrothermal strategy and then transformed into ZIF-67 followed by tellurization which was used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The designed MOF CoTe2/MnTe2 nanorod electrocatalyst exhibited superior activity for both OER (η = 220 mV@ 10 mA cm-2) and ORR (E1/2 = 0.81 V vs RHE) and outstanding stability. The exceptional achievement could be primarily credited to the porous structure, interconnected designs, and deliberately created deficiencies that enhanced the electrocatalytic activity for the OER/ORR. This improvement was predominantly due to the enhanced electrochemical surface area and charge transfer inherent in the materials. Therefore, this simple and cost-effective method can be used to produce highly active bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts.

Preparation of a high-performance H2S gas sensor based on CuO/Co3O4composite derived from bimetallic MOF

The bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), Cu/Co-MOF, was synthesized through a solvothermal method and calcined to obtain CuO/Co3O4composites. By adjusting the molar ratio between Cu and Co ions, a composite material of CuO/Co3O4(Cu:Co = 1:1) was developed and showed excellent sensing capabilities, and the response reached as high as 196.3 for 10 ppm H2S detection. Furthermore, the optimal operating temperature as low as 40 °C was found. In comparison with the sensors prepared by pristine CuO and pristine Co3O4, the sensor based on CuO/Co3O4composite exhibited a significant response. Additionally, the sensor can detect H2S gas down to 300 ppb. The gas sensing mechanism is discussed in depth from the perspective of p-p heterojunction formation between the p-type CuO and p-type Co3O4. The as-prepared CuO/Co3O4composite-based sensor is expected to find practical application in the low-power monitoring of H2S.

Thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Catalytic CO2 Cycloaddition and Photocatalytic Benzylamine Coupling Reactions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with permanent porosity and multifunctional catalytic sites constructed by two or more organic ligands are regarded as effective heterogeneous catalysts to improve certain organic catalytic reactions. In this work, a pillared-layer Zn-MOF (MOF-LS10) was constructed by 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrazine (H4TCPP) and 2,5-di(pyridin-4-yl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (DPTZTZ). After activation, MOF-LS10 has a permanent porosity and moderate CO2 adsorption capacity. The introduction of thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TZTZ), a photoactive unit, into the framework endows MOF-LS10 with excellent photocatalytic performance. MOF-LS10 can not only efficiently catalyze the formation of cyclic carbonates from CO2 and epoxide substrates under mild conditions but also can photocatalyze benzylamine coupling at room temperature. In addition, we used another two ligands 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (H4BTEB) and 1,4-di(pyridin-4-yl)benzene (DPB) to synthesize MOF-LS11 (constructed by BTEB4- and DPTZTZ) and MOF-LS12 (constructed by TCPP4- and DPB) in order to explore whether the pyrazine structural unit and the TZTZ structural unit synergistically catalyze the reaction. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum demonstrates that the superoxide radical (·O2-), generated by electron transfer from the MOF excited by light to the oxidant, is the main active substance of oxidation. The design and synthesis of MOF-LS10 provide an effective synthetic strategy for the development of versatile heterogeneous catalysts for various organic reactions and a wide range of substrates.

Aptamer and DNAzyme-Functionalized Cu-MOF Hybrid Nanozymes for the Monitoring and Management of Bacteria-Infected Wounds

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with peroxidase (POD)-like activity have great potential for combating drug-resistant bacterial infections. However, the use of POD-like activities is severely limited by low oxygen levels and high levels of glutathione (GSH) within the microenvironment of bacterial infection. Herein, G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme-aptamer probes and tannic acid-chelated Au nanoparticle (Au-TA)-decorated Cu-based MOF nanosheets (termed GATC) with triple-enzyme activities were developed for visual detection and efficient antibacterial therapy. First, the monometallic MOFs (Cu-ZIF) showed the best catalytic and loading capacity performance compared with the bimetallic MOFs (CoCu-ZIF and ZnCu-ZIF). Then, Cu-MOFs, Au-TA, and DNAzyme improve the POD-like activity to generate more hydroxyl radicals (•OH) to kill bacteria. GATC can bind to bacteria through aptamer recognition, increasing the bacterial surface contact area for efficient antibacterial activity. GATC can decompose H2O2 into O2 to alleviate hypoxia and improve the microenvironment due to its catalase (CAT)-like activity. In addition, GATC exhibited GSH peroxidase-like activity, which can avoid the loss of •OH and result in bacterial death more easily. Compared with previous studies, GATC exhibited extraordinary bactericidal ability at an extremely low dosage of 3 μg/mL against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Notably, the GATC-catalyzed chromogenic reaction could accurately monitor the MRSA infection treatment process. Overall, this work could establish a therapeutic platform for the monitoring and management of bacteria-infected wounds.

Terrace-Like 2D Hierarchically Porous Iron/Cobalt Metal-Organic Framework: Ambient Fast Synthesis and Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction Application

It is urgent to design a low-cost electrocatalyst with high activity to enhance the efficiency of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is limited by the slow four-electron transfer kinetics process. Nevertheless, traditional synthetic methods, including calcination and solvothermal, of the electrocatalysts are high-cost, low-yield, and energy-hogging, which limits their industrial application. Herein, an ambient fast synthetic method is developed to prepare terrace-like Fe/Co bimetal-organic framework (TFC-MOF) electrocatalyst materials in gram scale in 1 h. The method in this paper is designable based on coordination chemistry. Fe and Co ions can coordinate with the carboxyl groups on benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3 BTC) to form a 2D-MOF structure. Structural characterizations, including SEM, TEM, and XRD are conducted to verify that the TFC-MOF is a terrace-like layered structure with uniform-sized mesoporous, which reduces the adsorption steric hindrance and facilitates the mass and electron transfer efficiency of OER. The TFC-MOF shows low overpotential, 255 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 , and a low Tafel slope of 49.9 mV dec-1 , in an alkaline solution. This work provides a planar coordination strategy to synthesize 2D-MOF OER electrocatalyst on a large scale with low cost and low energy consumption, which will promote its practical OER applications.

Harnessing Radicals in Confined Supramolecular Environments Made Possible by MOFs

Researching and utilizing radical intermediates in organic synthetic chemistry have innovated discoveries in methodology and theory. Reactions concerning free radical species opened new pathways beyond the frame of the two-electron mechanism while commonly characterized as rampant processes lacking selectivity. As a result, research in this field has always focused on the controllable generation of radical species and determining factors of selectivity. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as compelling candidates as catalysts in radical chemistry. From a catalytic point of view, the porous nature of MOFs entails an inner phase for the reaction that could offer possibilities for the regulation of reactivity and selectivity. From a material science perspecti ve, MOFs are organic-inorganic hybrid materials that integrate functional units in organic compounds and complex forms in the tunable long-ranged periodic structure. In this account, we summarized our progress in the application of MOFs in radical chemistry in three parts: (1) The generation of radical species; (2) The weak interactions and site selectivity; (3) Regio- and stereo-selectivity. The unique role of MOFs play in these paradigms is demonstrated in a supramolecular narrative through the analyses of the multi-constituent collaboration within the MOF and the interactions between MOFs and the intermediates during the reactions.

One-pot synthesis of bimetallic Fe-Cu metal-organic frameworks composite for the elimination of organic pollutants via peroxymonosulphate activation

A series of bimetallic of FeCu metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been synthesised using a solvothermal process by varying the ratio between the two metals. Further, the bimetallic MOF catalysts were characterised by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy techniques. Their catalytic properties for activation of peroxymonosulphate (PMS) have been tested by the removal of a model dye, rhodamine B. As a result, NH2-Fe2.4Cu1-MOF demonstrated the highest degradation, the effect of the ratio NH2-Fe2.4Cu1-MOF/PMS has been studied, and the main reactive species have been assessed. The application of these MOFs in powder form is difficult to handle in successive batch or flow systems. Thus, this study assessed the feasibility of growing NH2-Fe2,4Cu1-MOF on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) spheres using the one-pot solvothermal synthesis method. The optimisation of the catalytic activity of the synthesised composite (NH2-Fe2.4Cu1-MOF@PAN) has been evaluated by response surface methodology using a central composite face-centred experimental design matrix and selecting as independent variables: time, PMS concentration, and catalyst dosage. Based on the results, the optimisation of the operational conditions has been validated. At 2.5 mM PMS, 90 min, and 1.19 g·L-1 of catalyst dosage, maximum degradation (80.92%) has been achieved, which doubles the removal values obtained in previous studies with other MOFs. In addition, under these conditions, the catalyst has been proven to maintain its activity and stability for several cycles without activity loss.

Photo-Induced C1 Substitution Using Methanol as a C1 Source

The development of sustainable and efficient C1 substitution methods is of central interest for organic synthesis and pharmaceuticals production, the methylation motifs bound to a carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen atom widely exist in natural products and top-selling drugs. In the past decades, a number of methods involving green and inexpensive methanol have already been disclosed to replace industrial hazardous and waste-generating C1 source. Among the various efforts, photochemical strategy is considered as a "renewable" alternative that shows great potential to selectively activate methanol to achieve a series of C1 substitutions at mild conditions, typically C/N-methylation, methoxylation, hydroxymethylation, and formylation. Herein the recent advances in selective transformation of methanol to various C1 functional groups via well-designed photochemical systems involving different types of catalysts or not is systematically reviewed. Both the mechanism and corresponding photocatalytic system were discussed and classified on specific methanol activation models. Finally, the major challenges and perspectives are proposed.

Fe-phthalocyanine derived highly conjugated 2D covalent organic framework as superior electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Although porphyry systems like metallo-phthalocynine are recognized as promising molecular models for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), their poor durability and methanol tolerance are still challenges and need improvement before being considered for practical applications. Herein, we successfully designed and constructed a Fe-phthalocyanine-derived highly conjugated 2D covalent organic framework (2D FePc-COF), using octa-amino-Fe-phthalocyanine (OA-FePc) and cyclohexanone as precursors. The prepared 2D FePc-COF was characterized via multiple analytic techniques. The electrochemical studies indicated that prepared 2D FePc-COF was far more superior to OA-FePc and 20% Pt/C, displaying anodic shift of 100 and 50 mV (vs RHE) in formal potential, respectively. Moreover, this catalyst also demonstrated excellent methanol tolerance and durability (over 10,000 CV cycles). Theoretical investigations revealed that due to extended conjugation and elimination of electron donating groups (-NH2), the shifting of dz2-orbital (Fe) energy took nearer to π*-orbital (O2), allowing optimum coupling of both the orbitals, thereby enhancing 4e- ORR. This work demonstrates the art of molecular design, aiming at improving catalytic activity of macrocyclic molecular systems towards ORR.

Metal-organic frameworks/metal nanoparticles as smart nanosensing interfaces for electrochemical sensors applications: a mini-review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with huge specific surface area and abundant active sites, which are composed of metal ions or clusters and organic ligands in the form of coordination bonds. In recent years, MOFs have been successfully applied in many fields due to their excellent physical, chemical, and biological properties. Electrochemical sensors have advantages such as economy, portability, and sensitivity, making them increasingly valued in the field of sensors. Many studies have shown that the electrode materials will affect the performance of electrochemical sensors. Therefore, the research on electrode materials is still one of the hotspots. MOFs are also commonly used to construct electrochemical sensors. However, electrochemical sensors prepared from single MOFs have shortcomings such as insufficient conductivity, low sensitivity, and poor electrochemical catalytic ability. In order to compensate for these defects, a new type of nanocomposite material with very ideal conductivity was formed by adding metal nanoparticles (MNPs) to MOFs. The combination of the two is expected to be widely applied in the field of sensors. This review summarizes the applications of various MNPs/MOFs composites in the field of electrochemical sensors and provides some references for the development of MNPs/MOFs composites-based electrochemical sensors in the future.

Ru Supported on p-phthalic acid-Mn Derived from a Mn Metal-Organic Framework for Thermo- and Electrocatalytic Synthesis of Ethylene-D4 Glycol

Deuterium-labeled polyols are one of the most extensive applied chemicals in biochemistry and biophysics. However, the deuteriation still is insufficient, exhibiting a low deuterated ratio and indistinct reaction mechanism. Herein, Ru supported on MnBCD (MnBDC, derived from Mn p-phthalic acid metal-organic framework) as nanocatalyst with an agglomerated sheet-type structure; this allows the possibility of achieving both thermo- and electrocatalytic hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) reaction. Furthermore, XPS characterization confirmed that the specific structural changes in the electron density of Ru outer layers were modulated through the impregnation and reduction processes. According to the change of outer electronic structure, hydrogen spillover and electron-rich flow promote the reaction of the catalyst in thermo- and electrocatalytic systems, respectively. In addition, the results indicate that a high deuterated ratio of 97 % can be obtained, hence the catalytic technology has enormous potential for the synthesis of a broad variety of deuterium-labeled compounds.

Advantages of Bimetallic Organic Frameworks in the Adsorption, Catalysis and Detection for Water Contaminants

The binary metal organic framework (MOF) is composed of two heterometallic ions bonded to an organic ligand. Compared with monometallic MOFs, bimetallic MOFs have greatly improved in terms of structure, porosity, active site, adsorption, selectivity, and stability, which has attracted wide attention. At present, many effective strategies have been designed for the synthesis of bimetallic MOF-based nanomaterials with specific morphology, structure, and function. The results show that bimetallic MOF-based nanocomposites could achieve multiple synergistic effects, which will greatly improve their research in the fields of adsorption, catalysis, energy storage, sensing, and so on. In this review, the main preparation methods of bimetallic MOFs-based materials are summarized, with emphasis on their applications in adsorption, catalysis, and detection of target pollutants in water environments, and perspectives on the future development of bimetallic MOFs-based nanomaterials in the field of water are presented.

Space-Confined Metal Ion Strategy for Carbon Materials Derived from Cobalt Benzimidazole Frameworks with High Desalination Performance in Simulated Seawater

Various metal ions with different valence states (Mg²⁺ , Al³⁺ , Ca²⁺ , Ti⁴⁺ , Mn²⁺ , Fe³⁺ , Ni²⁺ , Zn²⁺ , Pb²⁺ , Ba²⁺ , Ce⁴⁺ ) are successfully confined in quasi-microcube shaped cobalt benzimidazole frameworks using a space-confined synthesis strategy. More importantly, a series of derived carbon materials that confine metal ions are obtained by high-temperature pyrolysis. Interestingly, the derived carbon materials exhibited electric double-layer and pseudocapacitance properties because of the presence of metal ions with various valence states. Moreover, the presence of additional metal ions within carbon materials may create new phases, which can accelerate Na⁺ insertion/extraction and thus increase electrochemical adsorption. Density functional theory results showed that carbon materials in which Ti ions are confined exhibit enhanced insertion/extraction of Na⁺ resulting from the presence of the characteristic anatase crystalline phases of TiO₂ . The Ti-containing materials have an impressive desalination capacity (62.8 mg g^-1 ) in capacitive deionization (CDI) applications with high cycling stability. This work provides a facile synthetic strategy for the confinement of metal ions in metal-organic frameworks and thus supports the further development of derived carbon materials for seawater desalination by CDI.

In situ self-assembled macroporous interconnected nanosheet arrays of Ni-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate metal - organic framework on Ti mesh as high-performance oxygen evolution electrodes

Highly efficient metal-organic framework (MOF)-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are desirable for water splitting, but their development remains challenging due to poor accessibility of coordinatively unsaturated metal (cum) sites and low intrinsic activity. A large-area three-dimensional (3-D) macroporous interconnected nanosheet array of Ni-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate has been in situ self-assembled on Ti mesh (TM) by using ethanol as the solvent and high-affinity oxide layer on TM to promote in situ nucleation. The obtained nanoarchitecture exhibits much superior catalytic activity compared to most reported catalysts including MOF-based catalysts, other precious-metal-free ones, and Ir/Ru-based ones. Additionally, this electrode undergoes no current decay after 300 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles and can maintain at 250 mA cm^-2 for over 266 h. The excellent catalytic performance is mainly due to the 3-D macroporous and interconnected nanosheet array structure improving cum site exposure and charge transport and in situ activated cum cations enhancing OH^- adsorption. This work not only develops a facile and economical approach to synthesize 3-D macroporous interconnected MOF nanosheet arrays to simultaneously increase the number, exposure, and intrinsic activity of active sites and facilitate charge transport for high-performance eletrocatalysis, but provides scientific insights into the mechanisms for self-assembly of this unique nanoarchitecture and for the high OER performance.

Two-dimensional manganese-iron bimetallic MOF-74 for electro-Fenton degradation of sulfamethoxazole

This study reported a novel application of Mn_0.67Fe_0.33-MOF-74 with two-dimensional (2D) morphology grown on carbon felt as a cathode for efficiently removing antibiotic sulfamethoxazole in the heterogeneous electro-Fenton system. Characterization demonstrated the successful synthesis of bimetallic MOF-74 by a simple one-step method. Electrochemical detection showed that the second metal addition and morphological change improved the electrochemical activity of the electrode and contributed to pollutant degradation. At pH 3 and 30 mA of current, the degradation efficiency of SMX reached 96% with 12.09 mg L^-1 H₂O₂ and 0.21 mM ·OH detected in the system after 90 min. During the reaction, electron transfer between ≡Fe^II/III and ≡Mn^II/III promoted divalent metal ions regeneration, which ensured the continuation of the Fenton reaction. Two-dimensional structures exposed more active sites favoring ·OH production. The pathway of sulfamethoxazole degradation and the reaction mechanisms were proposed based on the intermediates identification by LC-MS and radical capture results. High degradation rates were still observed in tap and river water, revealing the potential of Mn_0.67Fe_0.33-MOF-74@CF for practical applications. This study provides a simple MOF-based cathode synthesis method, which enhances our understanding of constructing efficient electrocatalytic cathodes based on morphological design and multi-metal strategies.

Electrochemical aptasensor based on the engineered core-shell MOF nanostructures for the detection of tumor antigens

It is essential to develop ultrasensitive biosensors for cancer detection and treatment monitoring. In the development of sensing platforms, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received considerable attention as potential porous crystalline nanostructures. Core-shell MOF nanoparticles (NPs) have shown different diversities, complexities, and biological functionalities, as well as significant electrochemical (EC) properties and potential bio-affinity to aptamers. As a result, the developed core-shell MOF-based aptasensors serve as highly sensitive platforms for sensing cancer biomarkers with an extremely low limit of detection (LOD). This paper aimed to provide an overview of different strategies for improving selectivity, sensitivity, and signal strength of MOF nanostructures. Then, aptamers and aptamers-modified core-shell MOFs were reviewed to address their functionalization and application in biosensing platforms. Additionally, the application of core-shell MOF-assisted EC aptasensors for detection of several tumor antigens such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA), carbohydrate antigen 15-3 (CA15-3), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2), cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA21-1), and other tumor markers were discussed. In conclusion, the present article reviews the advancement of potential biosensing platforms toward the detection of specific cancer biomarkers through the development of core-shell MOFs-based EC aptasensors.

MOF-derived transition metal-based catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO: a mini review

The excessive emission of CO₂ derived from the consumption of fossil fuels has caused severe energy and environmental crises. The electrochemical reduction of CO₂ into value-added products such as CO not only reduces the CO₂ concentration in the atmosphere but also promotes sustainable development in chemical engineering. Thus, tremendous work has been devoted to developing highly efficient catalysts for the selective CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR). Recently, MOF-derived transition metal-based catalysts have shown great potential for the CO₂RR due to their various compositions, adjustable structures, competitive ability, and acceptable cost. Herein, based on our work, a mini-review is proposed for an MOF-derived transition metal-based catalyst for the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to CO. The catalytic mechanism of the CO₂RR was first introduced, and then we summarized and analyzed the MOF-derived transition metal-based catalysts in terms of MOF-derived single atomic metal-based catalysts and MOF-derived metal nanoparticle-based catalysts. Finally, we present the challenges and perspectives for the subject topic. Hopefully, this review could be helpful and instructive for the design and application of MOF-derived transition metal-based catalysts for the selective CO₂RR to CO.

Recent Developments of Light-Harvesting Excitation, Macroscope Transfer and Multi-Stage Utilization of Photogenerated Electrons in Rotating Disk Photocatalytic Reactor

The rotating disk photocatalytic reactor is a kind of photocatalytic wastewater treatment technique with a high application potential, but the light energy utilization rate and photo quantum efficiency still need to be improved. Taking photogenerated electrons as the starting point, the following contents are reviewed in this work: (1) Light-harvesting excitation of photogenerated electrons. Based on the rotating disk thin solution film photocatalytic reactor, the photoanodes with light capture structures are reviewed from the macro perspective, and the research progress of light capture structure catalysts based on BiOCl is also reviewed from the micro perspective. (2) Macroscope transfer of photogenerated electrons. The research progress of photo fuel cell based on rotating disk reactors is reviewed. The system can effectively convert the chemical energy in organic pollutants into electrical energy through the macroscopic transfer of photogenerated electrons. (3) Multi-level utilization of photogenerated electrons. The photogenerated electrons transferred to the cathode can also generate H2O2 with oxygen or H2 with H+, and the reduction products can also be further utilized to deeply mineralize organic pollutants or reduce the nitrate in water. This short review will provide theoretical guidance for the further application of photocatalytic techniques in wastewater treatment.

Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks (BMOF) and BMOF- Incorporated Membranes for Energy and Environmental Applications

Bimetallic metal organic frameworks (BMOFs) are a class of crystalline solids and their structure comprises two metal ions in the lattice. BMOFs show a synergistic effect of two metal centres and enhanced properties compared to MOFs. By controlling the composition and relative distribution of two metal ions in the lattice the structure, morphology, and topology of BMOFs could be regulated resulting in an improvement in the tunability of pore structure, activity, and selectivity. Thus, developing BMOFs and BMOF incorporated membranes for applications such as adsorption, separation, catalysis, and sensing is a promising strategy to mitigate environmental pollution and address the looming energy crisis. Herein we present an overview of recent advancements in the area of BMOFs and a comprehensive review of BMOF incorporated membranes reported to date. The scope, challenges as well as future perspectives for BMOFs and BMOF incorporated membranes are presented.

Amide Functionalized Mesoporous MOF LOCOM-1 as a Stable Highly Active Basic Catalyst for Knoevenagel Condensation Reaction

Acyl-amide is extensively used as functional group and is a superior contender for the design of MOFs with the guest accessible functional organic sites. A novel acyl-amide-containing tetracarboxylate ligand, bis(3,5-dicarboxy-pheny1)terephthalamide, has been successfully synthesized. The H₄L linker has some fascinating attributes as follows: (i) four carboxylate moieties as the coordination sites confirm affluent coordination approaches to figure a diversity of structure; (ii) two acyl-amide groups as the guest interaction sites can engender guest molecules integrated into the MOF networks through H-bonding interfaces and have a possibility to act as functional organic sites for the condensation reaction. A mesoporous MOF ([Cu₂(L)(H₂O)₃]·4DMF·6H₂O) has been prepared in order to produce the amide FOS within the MOF, which will work as guest accessible sites. The prepared MOF was characterized by CHN analysis, PXRD, FTIR spectroscopy, and SEM analysis. The MOF showed superior catalytic activity for Knoevenagel condensation. The catalytic system endures a broad variety of the functional groups and presents high to modest yields of aldehydes containing electron withdrawing groups (4-chloro, 4-fluoro, 4-nitro), offering a yield > 98 in less reaction time as compared to aldehydes with electron donationg groups (4-methyl). The amide decorated MOF (LOCOM-1-) as a heterogeneous catalyst can be simply recovered by centrifugation and recycled again without a flagrant loss of its catalytic efficiency.

A rational design of functional porous frameworks for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction

The electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (ECO₂RR) is considered one of the approaches with the most potential to achieve lower carbon emissions in the future, but a huge gap still exists between the current ECO₂RR technology and industrial applications. Therefore, the design and preparation of catalysts with satisfactory activity, selectivity and stability for the ECO₂RR have attracted extensive attention. As a classic type of functional porous framework, crystalline porous materials (e.g., metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs)) and derived porous materials (e.g., MOF/COF composites and pyrolysates) have been regarded as superior catalysts for the ECO₂RR due to their advantages such as designable porosity, modifiable skeleton, flexible active site structure, regulable charge transfer pathway and controllable morphology. Meanwhile, with the rapid development of nano-characterization and theoretical calculation technologies, the structure-activity relationships of functional porous frameworks have been comprehensively considered, i.e., metallic element type, local coordination environment, and microstructure, corresponding to selectivity, activity and mass transfer efficiency for the ECO₂RR, respectively. In this review, the rational design strategy for functional porous frameworks is briefly but precisely generalized based on three key factors including metallic element type, local coordination environment, and microstructure. Then, details about the structure-activity relationships for functional porous frameworks are illustrated in the order of MOFs, COFs, composites and pyrolysates to analyze the effect of the above-mentioned three factors on their ECO₂RR performance. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of functional porous frameworks for the further development of the ECO₂RR are reasonably proposed, aiming to offer insights for future studies in this intriguing and significant research field.

Nanostructure Engineering of Sn-Based Catalysts for Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Excessive anthropogenic CO₂ emission has caused a series of ecological and environmental issues, which threatens mankind's sustainable development. Mimicking the natural photosynthesis process (i.e., artificial photosynthesis) by electrochemically converting CO₂ into value-added products is a promising way to alleviate CO₂ emission and relieve the dependence on fossil fuels. Recently, Sn-based catalysts have attracted increasing research attentions due to the merits of low price, abundance, non-toxicity, and environmental benignancy. In this review, the paradigm of nanostructure engineering for efficient electrochemical CO₂ reduction (ECO₂ R) on Sn-based catalysts is systematically summarized. First, the nanostructure engineering of size, composition, atomic structure, morphology, defect, surficial modification, catalyst/substrate interface, and single-atom structure, are systematically discussed. The influence of nanostructure engineering on the electronic structure and adsorption property of intermediates, as well as the performance of Sn-based catalysts for ECO₂ R are highlighted. Second, the potential chemical state changes and the role of surface hydroxides on Sn-based catalysts during ECO₂ R are introduced. Third, the challenges and opportunities of Sn-based catalysts for ECO₂ R are proposed. It is expected that this review inspires the further development of highly efficient Sn-based catalysts, meanwhile offer protocols for the investigation of Sn-based catalysts.

A Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived 1T-MoS2 with Expanded Layer Spacing for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Metal phase molybdenum disulfide (1T-MoS₂ ) is considered a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its activated basal and superior electrical conductivity. Here, a one-step solvothermal route is developed to prepare 1T-MoS₂ with expanded layer spacing through the derivatization of a Mo-based organic framework (Mo-MOFs). Benefiting from N,N-dimethylformamide oxide as external stress, the interplanar spacing of (002) of the MoS₂ catalyst is extended to 10.87 Å, which represents the largest one for the 1T-MoS₂ catalyst prepared by the bottom-up approach. Theoretical calculations reveal that the expanded crystal planes alter the electronic structure of 1T-MoS₂ , lower the adsorption-desorption potentials of protons, and thus, trigger efficient catalytic activity for HER. The optimal 1T-MoS₂ catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 98 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 for HER, corresponding to a Tafel slope of 52 mV dec^-1 . This Mo-MOFs-derived strategy provides a potential way to design high-performance catalysts by adjusting the layer spacing of 2D materials.
