Luminescent Lanthanide Metal Organic Frameworks (LnMOFs): A Versatile Platform towards Organomolecule Sensing

Programmable Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework for Ultra-Efficient Nucleic Acids Extraction and Interaction Analysis

Efficient, mild, and reversible adsorption of nucleic acids onto nanomaterials represents a promising analytical approach for medical diagnosis. However, there is a scarcity of efficient and reversible nucleic acid adsorption nanomaterials. Additionally, the lack of comprehension of the molecular mechanisms governing their interactions poses significant challenges. These issues hinder the rational design and analytical applications of the nanomaterials. Herein, we propose an ultra-efficient nucleic acid affinity nanomaterial based on programmable lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs). Through experiments and density functional theory calculations, a rational design guideline for nucleic acid affinity of Ln-MOF was proposed, and a modular and flexible preparation scheme was provided. Then, Er-TPA (terephthalic acid) MOF emerged as the optimal candidate due to its pore size-independent adsorption and desorption capabilities for nucleic acids, enabling ultra-efficient adsorption (about 150% mass ratio) within 1 min. Furthermore, we elucidate the molecular-level mechanisms underlying the Ln-MOF adsorption of single- and double-stranded DNA and G4 structures. The affinity nanomaterial based on Ln-MOF exhibits robust nucleic acid extraction capability (4-fold higher than commercial reagent kits) and enables mild and reversible CRISPR/Cas9 functional regulation. This method holds significant promise for broad application in DNA/RNA liquid biopsy and gene editing, facilitating breakthroughs in analytical chemistry, pharmacy, and medical research.

Recent advances in molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for visual recognition and inhibition of α-dicarbonyl compound-mediated Maillard reaction products

α-Dicarbonyl compounds (α-DCs) are important intermediates and precursors of harmful Maillard reaction products (e.g., acrylamide and late glycosylation end-products), and they exist widely in thermoprocessed sugar- or fat-rich foods. α-DCs and their end-products are prone to accumulation in the human body and lead to the development of various chronic diseases. Therefore, detection of α-DCs and their associated hazards in food samples is crucial. This paper reviews the preparation of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) enabling visual intelligent responses and the strategies for recognition and capture of α-DCs and their associated hazards, and provides a comprehensive summary of the development of visual MIPs, including integration strategies and applications with real food samples. The visual signal responses as well as the mechanisms for hazard recognition and capture are highlighted. Current challenges and prospects for visual MIPs with advanced applications in food, agricultural and environmental samples are also discussed. This review will open new horizons regarding visual MIPs for recognition and inhibition of hazards in food safety.

Bioreaction-Compatible Bivariate Lanthanide MOF Sensor Enables Stimulus-Multiresponsive Platform for ctDNA On-Site Detection

Detection of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in liquid biopsy is of great importance for tumor diagnosis but difficult due to its low amount in bodily fluids. Herein, a novel ctDNA detection platform is established by quantifying DNA amplification by-product pyrophosphate (PPi) using a newly designed bivariable lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF), namely, Ce/Eu-DPA MOF (CE-24, DPA = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid). CE-24 MOF exhibits ultrafast dual-response (fluorescence enhancement and enzyme-activity inhibition) to PPi stimuli by virtue of host-guest interaction. The platform is applied to detecting colon carcinoma-related ctDNA (KARS G12D mutation) combined with the isothermal nucleic acid exponential amplification reaction (EXPAR). ctDNA triggers the generation of a large amount of PPi, and the ctDNA quantification is achieved through the ratio fluorescence/colorimetric dual-mode assay of PPi. The combination of the EXPAR and the dual-mode PPi sensing allows the ctDNA assay method to be low-cost, convenient, bioreaction-compatible (freedom from the interference of bioreaction systems), sensitive (limit of detection down to 101 fM), and suitable for on-site detection. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first application of Ln-MOF for ctDNA detection, and it provides a novel universal strategy for the rapid detection of nucleic acid biomarkers in point-of-care scenarios.

A quenched fluorescence sensor array based on bis-lanthanide metal-organic framework for acetaldehyde detection and Baijiu discrimination

Discrimination of segmented Baijiu contributes to stabilizing the quality of products, improving revenue-generating effects. A fluorescence sensor array is constructed based on four fluorescence characteristic peaks of terbium@lanthanum metal-organic framework (Tb@La-MOF). Its fluorescence signal is specifically quenched, when Tb@La-MOF encounters acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde may inhibit the absorption of energy by the organic ligands in MOF, or/and hydrogen bonding with -COOH on the organic ligand, resulting in energy transfer to Tb(Ⅲ). According to this, the quantitative detection of acetaldehyde is completed with a range of 10-300 μM and the detection limit of 5.5 μM. At the same time, it has been successfully applied to the discrimination of segmented Baijiu. Fifteen segmented from three wine cellars are 100 % discriminated with the combined processing of sensor arrays and analytical methods. Accuracy, simplicity, and low-cost are highlights of this fluorescence sensor array, which has considerable potential for application in detection, production, and food field.

Highly Specific Sulfadiazine Detection Using a Two-Dimensional Europium-Organic Coordination Polymer

Sulfadiazine (SFZ) is an inexpensive large-consumption antibiotic used for treat bacterial infections but an excess of residues in food can be harmful. Fast and specific luminescence detection of SFZ is highly challenging because of the interference of structurally similar antibiotics. In this work, we develop a two-dimensional europium-organic coordination polymer with excellent luminescence and water stability for highly specific detection of SFZ in the range of 0-0.2 mM. Structural analysis shows that the high stability of coordination polymer is due to the high coordination number of europium ion and the special chelating coordination structure of ligand. The experiment results revealed that the high selectivity and effectively luminescence quenched behaviour of coordination polymer toward SFZ is caused by highly efficient inner filter effect.

Lab on the Microneedles: A Wearable Metal-organic Frameworks-Based Sensor for Visual Monitoring of Stress Hormone

Abnormal secretion and dysrhythmias of cortisol (CORT) are associated with various diseases such as sleep disorders, depression, and chronic fatigue. Wearable devices are a cutting-edge technology for point-of-care detection and dynamic monitoring of CORT with inspiring convenience. Herein, we developed a minimally invasive skin-worn device with the advanced integration of both interstitial fluid (ISF) sampling and target molecule sensing for simultaneous detection of CORT via a microneedle-based sensor with high sensitivity, excellent efficiency, and outstanding reproducibility. In the microneedle patch, swellable hydrogel was employed as the adsorption matrix for ISF extraction. Meanwhile, europium metal-organic frameworks (Eu-MOF) wrapped in the matrix played a vital role in CORT recognition and quantitative analysis. The wearable and label-free Eu-MOF-loaded microneedle patch exhibited high sensitivity in CORT detection with the detection limit reaching 10-9 M and excellent selectivity. Molecular dynamics simulation-driven mechanism exploration revealed that the strong interface interaction promoted fluorescence quenching of Eu-MOF. Moreover, in vitro and in vivo investigation confirmed the feasibility and reliability of the sensing method, and excellent biocompatibility was validated. Overall, a sensitive approach based on the wearable Eu-MOF microneedle (MN) patch was established for the simultaneous detection of CORT via visible fluorescence quenching with exciting clinical-translational ability.

A Highly Chemically Robust 3D Interpenetrated MOF Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Hantzsch 1,4-Dihydropyridines and Drug Molecules

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted immense attention as efficient heterogeneous catalysts over other solid catalysts, however, their chemical environment instability often limits their catalytic potential. Herein, utilizing a flexible unexplored tetra-acid ligand and employing the mixed ligand approach, a 3D interpenetrated robust framework is strategically developed, IITKGP-51 (IITKGP stands for Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur), which retained its crystallinity over a wide range of pH solution (4-12). Having ample open metal sites (OMSs), IITKGP-51 is explored as a heterogeneous catalyst in one-pot Hantzsch condensation reaction, with low catalyst loading for a broad range of substrates. The synthesis of drug molecules remains one of the most significant and emergent areas of organic and medicinal chemistry. Considering such practical utility, biologically important Nemadipine B and Nifedipine drug molecules (calcium channel protein inhibitor) are synthesized for the first time by using this catalyst and fully characterized via SC-XRD and other spectroscopic methods. This report inaugurates the usage of a MOF material as a catalyst for the synthesis of drug molecules.

An electrochemiluminescence sensor based on lanthanide bimetallic MOFs with a "cascade sensitization mechanism" for the sensitive detection of CA242

Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) broaden the optical sensing applications of lanthanide ions due to the antenna effect between organic ligands and metals. However, the sensitization ability of the ligand to metal ions is limited, and maximizing the sensitization of the electrochemiluminescence behavior of Eu3+ is still a challenge for the application of Ln-MOFs. Therefore, under the guidance of the "cascade sensitization mechanism" based on the antenna effect sensitizing the electrochemiluminescence of bimetallic Ln-MOFs, we proposed Eu/Tb-MOFs with high luminescence intensity as a signal probe. According to the antenna effect, the conjugated structure and high extinction coefficient of the benzene ring of 2-amino terephthalic acid (NH2-BDC) can enhance the ECL luminescence intensity of Eu/Tb-MOFs. Tb3+ can act as an energy bridge between NH2-BDC and Eu3+, buffering the energy gap. The bimetallic sensitization is formed between Tb3+ and Eu3+, which can inhibit the reverse internal flow of energy and ensure the high luminous efficiency of Eu3+. In addition, the nanosphere mixed valence Fe3O4 as a co-reactant accelerator promotes the formation of transient free radical SO4•- through the valence change of Fe2+/Fe3+. The ECL immunosensor constructed by luminophores Eu/Tb-MOFs and nanosphere Fe3O4 provided a new explanation for the ECL self-luminous of Eu/Tb-MOFs.

Metal-Organic Framework Based Sensors for Benzene Vapor

Sensing of benzene vapor is a hot spot due to the volatile drastic carcinogen even at trace concentration. However, achieving convenient and rapid detection is still a challenge. As a sort of functional porous material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed as detection sensors by adsorbing benzene vapor and converting it into other signals (fluorescence intensity/wavelength, chemiresistive, weight or color, etc.). Supramolecular interaction between benzene molecules and the host framework, aperture size/shape and structural flexibility are influential factors in the performance of MOF-based sensors. Therefore, enhancing the host-guest interactions between the host framework and benzene molecules, or regulating the diffusion rate of benzene molecules by changing the aperture size/shape and flexibility of the host framework to enhance the detection signal are effective strategies for constructing MOF-based sensors. This concept highlights several types of MOF-based sensors for the detection of benzene vapor.

A fluorescent terbium-metal-organic framework material for high-sensitivity detection of vomitoxin and oxytetracycline hydrochloride in water

A unique luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework (LnMOF)-based fluorescence detection platform was utilized to achieve sensitive detection of vomitoxin (VT) and oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC-HCL) without the use of antibodies or biomolecular modifications. The sensor had a fluorescence quenching constant of 9.74 × 106 M-1 and a low detection limit of 0.68 nM for vomitoxin. Notably, this is the first example of a Tb-MOF sensor for fluorescence detection of vomitoxin. We further investigated its response to two mycotoxins, aflatoxin B1 and ochratoxin A, and found that their Stern-Volmer fluorescence quenching constants were lower than those of VT. In addition, the fluorescence sensor realized sensitive detection of OTC-HCL with a detection limit of 0.039 μM. In conclusion, the method has great potential as a sensitive and simple technique to detect VT and OTC-HCL in water.

Mechanically Robust, Durable, and Multifunctional Hyper-Crosslinked Elastomer Based on Metal-Organic-Cluster Crosslinker: The Role of Topological Structure

Polymer materials formed by conventional metal-ligand bonds have very low branch functionality, the crosslinker of such polymer usually consists of 2-4 polymer chains and a single metal ion. Thus, these materials are weak, soft, humidity-sensitive, and unable to withstand their shape under long-term service. In this work, a new hyperbranched metal-organic cluster (MOC) crosslinker containing up to 16 vinyl groups is prepared by a straightforward coordination reaction. Compared with the current typical synthesis of metal-organic cages (MOCs) or metal-organic-polyhedra (MOP) crosslinkers with complex operations and low yield, the preparation of the MOC is simple and gram-scale. Thus, MOC can serve as a high-connectivity crosslinker to construct hyper-crosslinked polymer networks. The as-prepared elastomer exhibits mechanical robustness, creep-resistance, and humidity-stability. Besides, the elastomer possesses self-healing and recyclability at mild condition as well as fluorescence stability. These impressive comprehensive properties are proven to originate from the hyper-crosslinked topological structure and microphase-separated morphology. The MOC-driven hyper-crosslinked elastomers provide a new solution for the construction of mechanically robust, durable, and multifunctional polymers.

Ultrasensitive Eu-Based MOF Luminescence Sensor for Clenbuterol Visible Recognition

Clenbuterol (CLB) as an illegal feed additive may cause a great security risk to food safety. However, convenient and efficient detection means for CLB in practical application remain a formidable challenge. Herein, a stable Eu-based organic framework {[H2N(CH3)2]2[Eu2(ttca)2]·H2O}n (compound 1) (H4ttca = [1,1':2',1″-terphenyl]-4,4',4″,5'-tetracarboxylic acid) has been harvested, exhibiting excellent chemical stability and thermal stability. Luminescence investigation reveals that compound 1 can sensitively and selectively detect CLB without being affected by different components from simulated serum and urine (limit detection: 22.7 nM). Furthermore, sensor 1 can also be applicable to CLB recognition in real swine feeds, presenting excellent anti-interference performance. The good cyclicity of compound 1 endows CLB determination with many advantages: low cost, high stability, and simplicity. Importantly, in view of the indication of the luminescence color (red to blue), test membranes were fabricated and employed for convenient and fast CLB detection, providing a valuable scheme for the visual monitoring of CLB in meat products. This work enriches rare earth metal compounds and luminescence sensor portfolios and breaks the concentration record (nM) for detecting CLB compared with reported complex materials, providing an effective monitoring platform for CLB visually.

Construction of Porphyrin-Based Bimetallic Nanomaterials with Photocatalytic Properties

The efficient synthesis of nanosheets containing two metal ions is currently a formidable challenge. Here, we attempted to dope lanthanide-based bimetals into porphyrin-based metal-organic skeleton materials (MOFs) by microwave-assisted heating. The results of the EDX, ICP, and XPS tests show that we have successfully synthesized porphyrin-based lanthanide bimetallic nanosheets (Tb-Eu-TCPP) using a household microwave oven. In addition, it is tested and experimentally evident that these nanosheets have a thinner thickness, a larger BET surface area, and higher photogenerated carrier separation efficiency than bulk porphyrin-based bimetallic materials, thus exhibiting enhanced photocatalytic activity and n-type semiconductor properties. Furthermore, the prepared Tb-Eu-TCPP nanomaterials are more efficient in generating single-linear state oxygen under visible light irradiation compared to pristine monometallic nanosheets due to the generation of bimetallic nodes. The significant increase in catalytic activity is attributed to the improved separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers. This study not only deepens our understanding of lanthanide bimetallic nanosheet materials but also introduces an innovative approach to improve the photocatalytic performance of MOFs.

Terbium doping and energy level modification of zirconium organic frameworks as probes for the improved determination of histamine and visual inspection of food freshness

Food safety is a common concern among people, and the development of high-performance food freshness detection technology is crucial, but is still highly challenging. Fluorescent sensing based on metal organic frameworks is a promising technology to tackle this issue. In this work, three UiO-66 type Zirconium organic frameworks (ZrOFs) which are functionalized with varying numbers of hydroxyl groups to alter the energy levels, and partial replacement of Zirconium(IV) by Terbium(III) ions to introduce additional emitting centers, were explored as probes for the sensing of Histamine (His). With one hydroxyl group introduced, UiO-66-OH@Tb can be developed as ratiometric fluorescent probe with improved sensing performance, showing a wide detection range of 0 to 120 mg/L, and a low detection limit of 0.13 mg/L. UiO-66-OH@Tb can also be fabricated into composite film to function as visual sensing material of His. This work can provide instructions for the development of other fluorescent sensors.

Construction of Highly Luminescent Lanthanide Coordination Polymers and Their Visualization for Luminescence Sensing

NaH2SIP was selected as an organic ligand (NaH2SIP = 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt). We successfully constructed a new class of lanthanide coordination polymers Ln-HS ([Ln(SIP)(DMF)(H2O)4]DMF·H2O; Ln = Eu, Tb, Sm, and Dy) by a simple solvothermal synthesis method. They exhibited excellent photoluminescence properties for Ln3+ ions, where Eu-HS and Tb-HS exhibited high quantum yields of 13.70 and 42.38%, respectively. The codoped lanthanide coordination polymers obtained by doping with different ratios of Eu3+/Tb3+ serve as excellent ratiometric thermometers with high sensitivities in the physiological temperature range, with values of 16.8, 7.0, and 14.5%·K-1, respectively. The luminescent colors of Tb0.95Eu0.05-HS and Tb0.94Eu0.06-HS exhibit variations from green to yellow to orange, achieving visualized luminescence in a narrow temperature range. The composite film material Tb0.94Eu0.06-HS@PMMA demonstrates this color variation. Next, Tb0.5Sm0.5-HS obtained by Tb3+/Sm3+ codoping was investigated. The difference in the luminescence colors visible to the naked eye at different excitation wavelengths and the change in luminescence colors occur in a very narrow temperature range. All of them show the great value of the visualized luminescence in practical anticounterfeiting, with double anticounterfeiting function and high security.

Ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on europium-organic frameworks for selective and quantitative detection of cerium ions

BACKGROUND

Due to the unavoidable use of cerium in daily life, the accumulation of cerium in the environment increases health risks for humans. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a chemical sensing technology for the rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of cerium ions.

RESULTS

In this research work, a novel two-dimensional chain structure of a europium-based metal organic framework (Eu-MOF) [Eu2(tcpa)(Htcpa)2] was synthesized by using 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2TCPA) as the ligand and europium nitrate as the metal source. The results of powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis show that the synthesized Eu-MOF has excellent chemical and thermal stability. When the Eu-MOF suspension was excited by ultraviolet light at 292 nm, four fluorescence emissions were observed at 420, 595, 620 and 705 nm. It was particularly interesting that when cerium ions (Ce3+/Ce4+) were added to the Eu-MOF suspension, the fluorescence intensity at 420 nm was enhanced, while the fluorescence at 620 nm was quenched. On this basis, a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for detecting cerium ions was constructed, which has a good linear relationship in the range of 0.05-15 μM and a detection limit of 16 nM. The plausible mechanism of the change in the fluorescence characteristics of Eu-MOF caused by cerium ions was discussed in detail. Through the study of fluorescence lifetime and ultraviolet absorption, it was proven that the mechanism of Ce3+-quenching Eu-MOF fluorescence is the inner filter effect. Photoinduced electron transfer and internal filtering effects lead to fluorescence quenching at 620 nm, while redox reactions lead to fluorescence enhancement of the ligand at 420 nm.

SIGNIFICANCE

The proposed ratiometric fluorescence sensor was successfully employed for the detection of cerium ions in real water samples, confirming that it can be used as an alternative method for the detection of Ce3+ and Ce4+ in environmental samples.

Base-Directed Formation of Isostructural Lanthanide-Sulfate-Glutarate Coordination Polymers with Photoluminescence

A series of five isostructural 3D lanthanide-based coordination polymers [LnIII2(H2O)6(glu)(SO4)2]n [Ln = Pr(1), Nd(2), Sm(3), Eu(4), and Gd(5)] was effortlessly obtained within a few minutes via the microwave-heating method. The employment of auxiliary bases, that is, sodium hydroxide, 4,4'-bipyridine, and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, led to the formation of the title complex, whereas base-free synthesis yielded a three-dimensional inorganic coordination polymer, [Ln2(H2O)4(SO4)3]n·nH2O, Ln = Nd (2a). The robustness of the synthetic method was illustrated as both microwave-heating and conventional hydrothermal techniques also enabled the formation of a high-crystalline phase-pure complex 1-5. In the structure of 1-5, glutarato (glu2-) and sulfato ligands link dinuclear Ln(III) building units into three-dimensional frames. The glu2- ligands act as tethering linkers, expanding the structure into a neutral 3D coordination network. Hydrogen bonds were found to be the predominant intermolecular interactions in the crystal structures. Photoluminescence of the complex 1-5 was studied.

A water-stabilized Tb-MOF can be used as a sensitive and selective fluorescence sensor for the detection of oxytetracycline hydrochloride

Oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) is a commonly used over-the-counter antibiotic, valued for its potent antibacterial properties. However, the inappropriate and excessive use of OTC can result in the accumulation of the drug in both the environment and human body, causing significant harm to ecosystems and human health. Therefore, the development of a fast and sensitive method for detecting OTC is of great significance. Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs) can effectively excite lanthanide metals to emit long-lifetime, narrow and stable fluorescence based on the antenna effect, but their application in fluorescence sensing is rarely reported. In this work, a strongly fluorescent material Tb-MOF was synthesized by a facile solvothermal method using 1,2,4,5-phenylenetetracarboxylic acid (H4btec) and 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen) as organic ligands and lanthanide metal Tb as the luminescent center. Tb-MOF is a stable material in water and shows excellent linearity with OTC in the concentration range of 0 ∼ 70 μM, with low detection limit (0.12 μM) and luminescence color transition from bright green to dark green during the detection process. X-ray diffraction, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence lifetime analyses revealed that the fluorescence quenching of Tb-MOF by OTC is caused by the inner filter effect in static quenching. Test strips for OTC detection were successfully prepared using Tb-MOF. These strips are not only low cost and easy to prepare but can also be used as portable sensing devices that can be easily distinguished by the naked eye during OTC testing. This study not only presents a fluorescent probe for the detection of OTC in water but also offers a practical method for converting fluorescent luminescent materials into functional devices for OTC detection.

A Europium Metal-Organic Framework and Its Polymer Composite Membrane as Switch-Off Fluorescence Sensors for Antibiotic Detection in Lake Water

The detection of antibiotic residues is of great significance in monitoring their overuse in healthcare, livestock and poultry farming, and agricultural production. Herein, EuCl3 and 4,4'-dicarboxyl-diphenoxyethene (H2DPOE) ionothermally reacted in 1-methyl-3-butylimidazolium chloride to give a europium metal-organic framework (Eu-DPOE). Eu-DPOE shows different fluorescence quenching rates for sensing eight antibiotics under different excitation wavelengths. Eu-DPOE displays a fast response, high selectivity, and sensitivity in antibiotic detection by fluorescence quenching. Eu-DPOE can sensitively detect TCs (tetracyclines), NOR (norfloxacin), NFT (furazolidone), ODZ (ornidazole), SDZ (sulfadiazine), and CHL (chloramphenicol) with limits of detection below 0.5 μmol/L. It provides a convenient and rapid tool for sensing antibiotics in aqueous solution. The detection mechanism is a competition absorption between DPOE2- and antibiotics with the supports from powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), UV-vis spectra, and fluorescence lifetime. With a composite membrane of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix loading Eu-DPOE (Eu-DPOE@PVDF), Eu-DPOE@PVDF exhibits a visual fluorescence response to NOR under a 254 nm UV lamp and NFT and CTC under 365 nm. Eu-DPOE@PVDF is applied in the quantitative detection of CTC, NOR, and NFT in lake water with recovery rates ranging from 88.37 to 113.8%. Totally, fluorescence-quenched Eu-DPOE@PVDF exhibits a fast response, high selectivity, and sensitivity in sensing CTC, NOR, and NFT.

Thiol and thioether-based metal-organic frameworks: synthesis, structure, and multifaceted applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are unique hybrid porous materials formed by combining metal ions or clusters with organic ligands. Thiol and thioether-based MOFs belong to a specific category of MOFs where one or many thiols or thioether groups are present in organic linkers. Depending on the linkers, thiol-thioether MOFs can be divided into three categories: (i) MOFs where both thiol or thioether groups are part of the carboxylic acid ligands, (ii) MOFs where only thiol or thioether groups are present in the organic linker, and (iii) MOFs where both thiol or thioether groups are part of azolate-containing linkers. MOFs containing thiol-thioether-based acid ligands are synthesized through two primary approaches; one is by utilizing thiol and thioether-based carboxylic acid ligands where the bonding pattern of ligands with metal ions plays a vital role in MOF formation (HSAB principle). MOFs synthesized by this approach can be structurally differentiated into two categories: structures without common structural motifs and structures with common structural motifs (related to UiO-66, UiO-67, UiO-68, MIL-53, NU-1100, etc.). The second approach to synthesize thiol and thioether-based MOFs is indirect methods, where thiol or thioether functionality is introduced in MOFs by techniques like post-synthetic modifications (PSM), post-synthetic exchange (PSE) and by forming composite materials. Generally, MOFs containing only thiol-thioether-based ligands are synthesized by interfacial assisted synthesis, forming two-dimensional sheet frameworks, and show significantly high conductivity. A limited study has been done on MOFs containing thiol-thioether-based azolate ligands where both nitrogen- and sulfur-containing functionality are present in the MOF frameworks. These materials exhibit intriguing properties stemming from the interplay between metal centres, organic ligands, and sulfur functionality. As a result, they offer great potential for multifaceted applications, ranging from catalysis, sensing, and conductivity, to adsorption. This perspective is organised through an introduction, schematic representations, and tabular data of the reported thiol and thioether MOFs and concluded with future directions.

Turn-off luminescence sensing, white light emission and magnetic studies of two-dimensional lanthanide MOFs

The lanthanide metal organic framework compounds [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1a-5a) and [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1b-5b) were prepared by employing 2,5-bis(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)terephthalic acid (2,5-BPTA) as the primary ligand and 2,2'-bipyridine (1a-5a) and 1,10-phenanthroline (1b-5b) as the secondary ligands. Single-crystal structural studies on [Gd(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (3a) and [Dy(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (5b) indicated that the compounds have a two-dimensional structure. The Y compound exhibits blue emission, and the other compounds exhibit emission in the expected regions (λex = 350 nm). White light emission was achieved by careful mixing of the red (Eu3+) and green (Tb3+) components in the blue emitting Y compound. Thus, Y0.96Tb0.02Eu0.02 (bpy) and Y0.939Tb0.06Eu0.001 (phen) were found to show white emission when excited using a wavelength of 350 nm. The introduction of N-N-containing ancillary ligands (i.e., bpy and phen) increased the overall quantum yield (QY) of white light emission to 31% and 43%, respectively. The high QY observed for the Tb and Eu compounds was found to be sensitive and selective for the fluorometric detection of azinphos-methyl pesticide and trinitrophenol (TNP) in an aqueous medium at the ppb level. The same behaviour was observed when utilising the compounds as onsite paper strip sensors. Their magnetic properties were also studied, revealing for the Tb and Dy derivatives slow relaxation of the magnetisation at low temperature. The present study highlights the usefulness of rigid π-conjugated molecules such as 2,2'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline in enhancing the many utilities of rare-earth-containing MOFs towards white light emission, the sensing of harmful and dangerous substances and magnetic properties.

A Water-Stable Cationic SIFSIX MOF for Luminescent Probing of Cr2 O7 2- via Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Transformation

The sensing and monitoring of toxic oxo-anion contaminants in water are of significant importance to biological and environmental systems. A rare hydro-stable SIFSIX metal-organic framework, SiF6 @MOF-1, {[Cu(L)2 (H2 O)2 ]·(SiF6 )(H2 O)}n , with exchangeable SiF6 2- anion in its pore is strategically designed and synthesized, exhibiting selective detection of toxic Cr2 O7 2- oxo-anion in an aqueous medium having high sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability through fluorescence quenching phenomena. More importantly, the recognition and ion exchange mechanism is unveiled through the rarely explored single-crystal-to-single crystal (SC-SC) fashion with well-resolved structures. A thorough SC-SC study with interfering anions (Cl- , F- , I- , NO3 - , HCO3 - , SO4 2- , SCN- , IO3 - ) revealed no such transformations to take place, as per line with quenching studies. Density functional theory calculations revealed that despite a lesser binding affinity, Cr2 O7 2- shows strong orbital mixing and large driving forces for electron transfer than SiF6 2- , and thus enlightens the fluorescence quenching mechanism. This work inaugurates the usage of a SIFSIX MOF toward sensing application domain under aqueous medium where hydrolytic stability is a prime concern for their plausible implementation as sensor materials.

Stepwise construction of multi-component metal-organic frameworks

Multi-component metal-organic frameworks (MC-MOFs) are crystalline porous materials containing multiple organic ligands or mixed metals, which manifest new properties beyond the linear combination of the single component. However, the traditional one-pot synthesis method for MOFs is not always applicable for synthesizing MC-MOFs due to the competitive coordination of multiple ligands and metals. Therefore, the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs has been explored, which enables more precise control of the heterogeneity within the ordered MC-MOFs. This review provides a summary of the synthesis strategies, namely, ligand exchange, coordinative modification, covalent modification, ligand metalation, cluster metalation, and use of mixed-metal precursors, for the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of MC-MOFs with ordered arrangements of multiple functionalities, focusing on gas adsorption and separation, water remediation, heterogeneous catalysis, luminescence, and chemical sensing.

Ratiometric Fluorescence Thermometry, Quantitative Gossypol Detection, and CO2 Chemical Fixation by a Multipurpose Europium (III) Metal-Organic Framework

A lanthanide-based molecular crystalline material endows metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with many fascinating applications such as fluorescence detection and CO2 chemical fixation. Herein, we describe and study a multipurpose europium(III) MOF with the formula of {[Eu2(TATAB)2]·2.5H2O·2DMF}n (Eu-MOF) (where H3TATAB is 4,4',4″-((1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris(azanediyl))tribenzoic acid ligand) for photoluminescence sensor matrix and CO2 chemical fixation. This Eu-MOF features 1D square channels along the c direction with a pore size of ca.14.07 Å × 14.07 Å, occupied by lattice water and DMF molecules. The obtained Eu-MOF can achieve simultaneous luminescence of the H3TATAB ligand and Eu3+ ions, which can be developed as the sensor matrix for ratiometric fluorescence thermometry. The luminescence of the Eu-MOF demonstrates an obvious color change from red to yellow as temperature rises from 303 to 373 K and the Eu-MOF has a satisfying relative sensitivity of 3.21% K-1 and a small temperature uncertainty of 0.0093 K at 333 K. Moreover, sensitive detection of gossypol was achieved with a quenching constant Ksv of 1.18 × 105 M-1 and a detection limit of 4.61 μM. A combination of the competitive absorption and photoinduced electron transfer caused by host-guest interactions and strengthened π-π packing effect synergistically between gossypol molecules and the Eu-MOF skeleton realizes the "turn-off" sensing of gossypol. Importantly, the nature of the Eu-MOF allows showing CO2 chemical fixation under mild conditions. Thus, the Eu-MOF can be utilized as a multipurpose material for ratiometric fluorescence thermometry, quantitative gossypol detection, and CO2 chemical fixation.

pH-Stable Zn(II) Coordination Polymer as a Multiresponsive Turn-On and Turn-Off Fluorescent Sensor for Aqueous Medium Detection of Al(III) and Cr(VI) Oxo-Anions

Nowadays, coordination polymers (CPs) are promising candidates as sensory materials for their high sensitivity, improved selectivity, fast responsive nature, as well as good recyclability. However, poor chemical stability often makes their practical usage limited. Herein, employing a mixed ligand approach, we constructed a chemically robust CP, {[Zn2L2(DPA)2]·3H2O}n (IITKGP-70, IITKGP stands for the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur), which exhibited excellent framework robustness not only in water but also over a broad range of pH solutions (pH = 3-11). The developed framework displayed high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of trivalent Al3+ ions and toxic hexavalent Cr(VI)-oxo anions in an aqueous medium. The developed framework exhibited an aqueous medium Al3+ turn-on phenomenon with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 1.29 μM, whereas a turn-off effect was observed for toxic oxo-anions (Cr2O72- and CrO42-) having LOD values of 0.27 and 0.71 μM, respectively. Both turn-on and turn-off mechanisms are speculated via spectroscopic methods coupled with several ex situ studies. Such a multiresponsive nature (both turn-on and turn-off) for aqueous medium detection of targeted cations and anions simultaneously in a single platform coupled with high robustness, ease of scalability, recyclability, and fast-responsive nature makes IITKGP-70 highly fascinating as a sensory material for real-world applications.

Dual-ligand lanthanide metal-organic framework probe for ratiometric fluorescence detection of mercury ions in wastewater

By serving dipyridylic acid (DPA) and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (DHTA) as the biligands, a novel lanthanide (Eu3+) metal-organic framework (MOF) namely Eu-DHTA/DPA was prepared for specific Hg2+ fluorescence determination. The dual-ligand approach can endows the resulting luminescent MOF with dual emission of ratiometric fluorescence and uniform size. Eu3+ produces intense red fluorescence when activated by the ligand DPA, while the other ligand DHTA produces yellow fluorescence. Under 273 nm excitation, the presence of Hg2+ in the monitoring environment causes an increase in the intensity of the DHTA fluorescence peak at 559 nm and a decrease in the intensity of the Eu3+ fluorescence peak at 616 nm. Hg2+ effectively quenches the fluorescence emission of the central metal Eu3+ in Eu-DHTA/DPA at 616 nm through a dynamic quenching effect. This recognition process occurs due to the coordination of Hg2+ with ligands such as benzene rings, carboxyl groups, and pyridine N in three-dimensional space. Hg2+ was detected by measuring the ratio between two fluorescence peaks (I559 nm/I616 nm) within the range 2-20 μM, achieving a remarkably low detection limit of 40 nM. The established ratiometric fluorescence method has been successfully applied to the determination of Hg2+ in industrial wastewater of complex composition. The method plays a crucial role in the rapid and sensitive monitoring of Hg2+ in real environmental samples. The recoveries ranged from 92.82% to 112.67% (n = 3) with relative standard deviations (RSD) below 4.8%. This study offers a convenient and effective method for constructing probes for Hg2+ monitoring, with practical applications in environmental monitoring.

Highly Robust Metal-Organic Framework for Efficiently Catalyzing Knoevenagel Condensation and the Strecker Reaction under Solvent-Free Conditions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as one of the most promising porous materials and offer great opportunities for the rational design of new catalytic solids having great structural diversity and functional tunability. Despite numerous inherent merits, their chemical environment instability limits their practical usage and demands further exploration. Herein, by employing the mixed-ligand approach, we have designed and developed a robust 3D Co-MOF, [Co2(μ2-O)(TDC)2(L)(H2O)2]·2DMF (H2TDC = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid, L = 3,3'-azobispyridine), IITKGP-50 (IITKGP stands for the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur), which exhibited excellent framework robustness not only in water but also in a wide range of aqueous pH solutions (pH = 2-12). Taking advantage of superior framework robustness and the presence of high-density open metal sites, IITKGP-50 was further explored in catalyzing the two-component Knoevenagel condensation reaction and three-component Strecker reactions. Moreover, to verify the size selectivity of IITKGP-50, smaller to bulkier substrates in comparison with the MOF's pore cavity (8.1 × 5.6 Å2) were employed, in which relatively lesser conversions for the sterically bulkier aldehyde derivatives confirmed that the catalytic cycle occurs inside the pore cavity. The easy scalability, lower catalyst loading compared to that of benchmark MOFs, magnificent conversion rate over a wide range of substrates, and excellent recyclability without significant performance loss made IITKGP-50 a promising heterogeneous catalyst candidate.

Excitation Wavelength Engineering through Organic Linker Choice in Luminescent Atomic/Molecular Layer Deposited Lanthanide-Organic Thin Films

We demonstrate multiple roles for the organic linker in luminescent lanthanide-organic thin films grown with the strongly emerging atomic/molecular layer deposition technique. Besides rendering the hybrid thin film mechanically flexible and keeping the lanthanide nodes at a distance adequate to avoid concentration quenching, the organic moieties can act as efficient sensitizers for the lanthanide luminescence. We investigate six different aromatic organic precursors in combination with Eu3+ ions to reveal that by introducing different nitrogen species within the aromatic ring, it is possible to extend the excitation wavelength area from the UV range to the visible range. This opens new horizons for the application space of these efficiently photoluminescent thin-film materials.

Stable Europium(III) Metal-Organic Framework Demonstrating High Proton Conductivity and Fluorescence Detection of Tetracyclines

A europium(III) metal-organic framework (MOF), namely, {[[(CH₃)₂NH₂]₃Eu₂(DTTP-2OH)₂(HCOO)(H₂O)]·4H₂O}_n (Eu-MOF, H₄DTTP-2OH = 2',5'-dihydroxy-[1,1':4',1″-terphenyl]-3,3″,5,5″-tetracarboxylic acid) has been assembled through solvothermal method. The Eu-MOF is a three-dimensional (3D) (4,4,8)-connected topological framework with binuclear Eu(III) clusters as secondary building units, in which a richly ordered hydrogen bonding network formed among the free H₂O molecules, dimethylamine cations, and phenolic hydroxyl groups provides a potential pathway for proton conduction. The proton conductivity reaches the category of superionic conductors (σ > 10^-4 S cm^-1) at room temperature with a maximum conductivity of 1.91 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 60 °C and 98% RH. Moreover, it also can be used as a fluorescence sensor in aqueous solution with detection limits of 0.14 μM for tetracycline, 0.13 μM for oxytetracycline and 0.11 μM for doxycycline. These results pave new methods for constructing MOFs with high proton conductivity and responsive fluorescence.

Ultra-low limit of luminescent detection of gossypol by terbium(III)-based metal-organic framework

The widespread use of gossypol-containing animal feed and cottonseed oil poses a great threat to water quality and livestock and human health, and there is an urgent need for a sensor for the rapid detection of trace amounts of gossypol in aqueous solutions and cottonseed oil. As a result, an unprecedented three-dimensional metal-organic framework sensor based on terbium(III) and a flexible ligand 4-(3,5-dicarboxyphenoxy)isophthalic acid (H₄L) was developed. Tb-MOF, {[Tb(H₂O)(HL)]·0.5MeCN·0.25 H₂O}_n, is highly stable in water and polar organic solvents and exhibits terbium-centered luminescence with 44% quantum yield. Suspensions of MOF in water and ethanol demonstrate a luminescence quenching response to cotton phytotoxicant gossypol with an unprecedented low detection limit of 0.76 nM and 1.89 nM, correspondingly, without interference from the components of cottonseed oil and blood plasma, making it suitable for the detection and determination of gossypol in real-life water and oil samples. Significantly, Tb-MOF is the first highly efficient sensor that uses water as a solvent to detect trace amounts of gossypol, and it can visualize and quantify gossypol in edible-grade cottonseed oil as well, which proves its great potential for practical application. In addition, Tb-MOF exhibited a detection limit for Fe³⁺ (0.23 μM) among the lowest reported for lanthanide-based MOFs in aqueous solutions so far.

Construction of High Quantum Yield Lanthanide Luminescent MOF Platform by In Situ Doping and Its Temperature Sensing Performance

Lanthanide luminescent MOF materials show excellent luminescent properties. However, obtaining lanthanide luminescent MOFs with high quantum yield is a challenging research. A novel bismuth-based metal-organic framework [Bi(SIP)(DMF)₂] was constructed by solvothermal method, utilizing 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt (NaH₂SIP) and Bi(NO₃)₃·5H₂O. Thereafter, doped MOFs (Ln-Bi-SIP, Ln = Eu, Tb, Sm, Dy, Yb, Nd, Er) with different luminescent properties have been obtained by in situ doping with different lanthanide metal ions, among which Eu-Bi-SIP, Tb-Bi-SIP, Sm-Bi-SIP, and Dy-Bi-SIP have high quantum yield. What is special is that the doping amount of Ln³⁺ ions is very low, and the doped MOF can achieve high luminescence quantum yields. EuTb-Bi-SIP obtained by Eu³⁺/Tb³⁺ codoping and Dy-Bi-SIP exhibit good temperature sensing performance over a wide temperature range with the maximum sensitivity S_r of 1.6%·K^-1 (433 K) and 2.6%·K^-1, respectively (133 K), while the cycling experiments also show good repeatability in the assay temperature range. Finally, considering the practical application value, EuTb-Bi-SIP was blended with an organic polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to produce a thin film, which shows different color changes at different temperatures.

Advance Progress on Luminescent Sensing of Nitroaromatics by Crystalline Lanthanide-Organic Complexes

Water environment pollution is becoming an increasingly serious issue due to industrial pollutants with the rapid development of modern industry. Among many pollutants, the toxic and explosive nitroaromatics are used extensively in the chemical industry, resulting in environmental pollution of soil and groundwater. Therefore, the detection of nitroaromatics is of great significance to environmental monitoring, citizen life and homeland security. Lanthanide-organic complexes with controllable structural features and excellent optical performance have been rationally designed and successfully prepared and used as lanthanide-based sensors for the detection of nitroaromatics. This review will focus on crystalline luminescent lanthanide-organic sensing materials with different dimensional structures, including the 0D discrete structure, 1D and 2D coordination polymers and the 3D framework. Large numbers of studies have shown that several nitroaromatics could be detected by crystalline lanthanide-organic-complex-based sensors, for instance, nitrobenzene (NB), nitrophenol (4-NP or 2-NP), trinitrophenol (TNP) and so on. The various fluorescence detection mechanisms were summarized and sorted out in the review, which might help researchers or readers to comprehensively understand the mechanism of the fluorescence detection of nitroaromatics and provide a theoretical basis for the rational design of new crystalline lanthanide-organic complex-based sensors.

Ratiometric detection of Cu2+ in water and drinks using Tb(III)-functionalized UiO-66-type metal-organic frameworks

As an important trace element in the human body, the concentration of Cu²⁺ has an important impact on the environment and human health, and its quantitative determination is of great significance in the fields of environmental protection and food safety. Here, a ratiometric fluorescent probe based on Tb(III)-functionalized UiO-66-type MOFs has been synthesized via a facile post-synthetic modification method by employing mixed linkers containing terephthalic acid and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid for Cu²⁺ detection. The blue fluorescence intensity at 440 nm from the ligands of MOFs does not change much with increasing Cu²⁺ concentrations and can be used as a reference signal, while the green fluorescence of Tb³⁺ can be rapidly and selectively quenched, causing fluorescence intensity at 547 nm to decrease. The probe can be used as a ratiometric sensor for Cu²⁺ detection with a good linear response and low detection limit. The use of the probe for the determination of Cu²⁺ in real water samples and drinks shows good practicality. This method for Cu²⁺ detection is simple, specific and visualized to meet the needs of environmental monitoring and food analysis and provides a new strategy for the construction of new copper ion fluorescent sensors to analyze complex samples.

Stacking Lanthanide-MOF Thin Films to Yield Highly Sensitive Optical Thermometers

Easy-to-integrate, remote read-out thermometers with fast response are of huge interest in numerous application fields. In the context of optical read-out devices, sensors based on the emission of lanthanides (Eu(III), Tb(III)) are particularly promising. Here, by using a layer-by-layer (LbL) approach in the liquid-phase epitaxy process, a series of continuous, low-thickness lanthanide-MIL-103 SURMOFs were fabricated to yield highly sensitive thermometers with optical readout. These Ln-SURMOFs exhibit remarkable temperature-sensing photoluminescence behavior, which can be read out using the naked eye. High transmittance is realized as well by precisely controlling the film thickness and the quality of these Ln-SURMOF thermometers. Moreover, we demonstrate that the thermal sensitivity can be improved in the temperature regime above 120 K, by controlling the energy transfer between Tb(III) and Eu(III). This performance is achieved by employing a sophisticated supramolecular architecture, namely MOF-on-MOF heteroepitaxy.

A "heat set" Zr-Diimide based Fibrous Metallogel: Multiresponsive Sensor, Column-based Dye Separation, and Iodine Sequestration

Sensing and monitoring hazardous contaminants in water and radioactive iodine sequestration is pivotal due to their detrimental impact on biological ecosystems. In this context, herein, a water stable zirconium-diimide based metallogel (Zr@MG) with fibrous columnar morphology is accomplished through the "heat set" method. The presence of diimide linkage with long aromatic chain manifests active luminescence properties in the linker as well as in the supramolecular framework structure. The as-synthesized Zr@MG xerogel can selectively detectCr₂O₇^2- (LOD = 0.52 ppm) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) (LOD = 80.2 ppb) in the aqueous medium. The Zr@MG paper strip-based detection for Cr₂O₇^2- and nitro explosive makes this metallogel reliable and an attractive luminescent sensor for practical use. Moreover, a column-based dye separation experiment was performed to show selective capture of positively charged methylene blue (MB) dye with 98 % separation efficiency from the mixture of two dyes. Also, the Zr@MG xerogel showed effective iodine sequestration from the vapor phase (232 wt%).

Dinuclear Lanthanide Compound as a Promising Luminescent Probe for Al3+ Ions

Luminescent probes have wide applications in biological system analysis and environmental science. Here, one novel luminescent dinuclear europium compound with a crown ether analogous ligand was synthesized through a solvent-thermal reaction. Through transformation, upon the addition of Al³⁺ ions to the N,N'-dimethyl formamide solution of the europium compound, the luminescent intensity of the characteristic emission of Eu³⁺ decreased, and a new emission peak appeared at 346 nm and increased rapidly. The luminescent investigation indicated that it could act as a highly sensitive and selective luminescent probe for Al³⁺ ions. Moreover, mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of a new more stable trinuclear aluminium compound during the sensing process.

Variable Dimensionality of Europium(III) and Terbium(III) Coordination Compounds with a Flexible Hexacarboxylate Ligand

A reaction between 4,4',4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(oxy))triphthalic acid (H₆L) and lanthanide(III) nitrates (Ln = Eu³⁺, Tb³⁺) in water under the same conditions gave a molecular coordination compound [Tb(H_4.5L)₂(H₂O)₅]∙6H₂O in the case of terbium(III) and a one-dimensional linear coordination polymer {[Eu₂(H₃L)₂(H₂O)₆]∙8H₂O}_n in the case of europium(III). The crystal structures of both compounds were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and they were further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The compounds demonstrated characteristic lanthanide-centered photoluminescence. The lanthanide-dependent dimensionality of the synthesized compounds, which are the first examples of the coordination compounds of hexacarboxylic acid H₆L demonstrates its potential as a linker for new coordination polymers.
