Abstract
BACKGROUND A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials has suggested a bidirectional relationship between sleep problems and mental health issues. Despite these findings, there is limited conclusive evidence on the relationship between sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and burnout. OBJECTIVE The current study aimed to evaluate the relationships between sleep quality symptoms, anxiety, depression, and burnout in samples of adult individuals from two Latin American countries, Peru and El Salvador, through network analysis and to identify key symptoms that reinforce the correlation and intensify the syndromes. METHODS A total of 1012 individuals from El Salvador and Peru participated, with an average age of 26.5 years (SD = 9.1). Symptom networks were constructed for both countries based on data from the Jenkins Sleep Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-2, General Anxiety Disorder-2, and a single burnout item. RESULTS The results indicated that Depressed Mood, Difficulty Falling Asleep, and Nervousness were the most central symptoms in a network in the participating countries. The strongest conditional associations were found between symptoms belonging to the same construct, which were similar in both countries. Thus, there is a relationship between Nervousness and Uncontrollable Worry, Anhedonia and Depressed Mood, and Nighttime Awakenings and Difficulty in Staying Asleep. It was observed that burnout is a bridge symptom between both countries and presents stronger conditional associations with Tiredness on Awakening, Depressed Mood, and Uncontrollable Worry. Other bridge symptoms include a Depressed Mood and Nervousness. The network structure did not differ between the participants from Peru and El Salvador. CONCLUSION The networks formed by sleep quality, anxiety, depression, and burnout symptoms play a prominent role in the comorbidity of mental health problems among the general populations of Peru and El Salvador. The symptom-based analytical approach highlights the different diagnostic weights of these symptoms. Treatments or interventions should focus on identifying central and bridge symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep and gut microbiota are emerging putative risk factors for several physical, mental, and cognitive conditions. Sleep deprivation has been shown to be linked with unhealthy microbiome environments in animal studies. However, in humans, the results are mixed. Epidemiological studies evaluating the effect of accelerometer-based sleep measures on gut microbiome are scarce. This study aims to explore the relationship between sleep duration and efficiency with the gut microbiota in adolescence. METHODS A subsample of 352 participants from the 2004 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort Study with sleep and fecal microbiota data available were included in the study. Sleep duration and sleep efficiency were obtained from actigraphy information at 11 years old whereas microbiota information from fecal samples was collected at 12 years. The fecal microbiota was analyzed via Illumina MiSeq (16S rRNA V3-V4 region) and the UNOISE pipeline. Alpha was assessed in QIIME2. Association measures for sleep variables and microbial α-diversity, and bacterial relative abundance were assessed through generalized models (linear and logistic regression), adjusting for maternal and child variables confounders. RESULTS Adjusted models showed that sleep duration was positively associated with Simpson index of α-diversity (β = 0.003; CI95 %: 0.00004; 0.01). Both sleep duration (OR = 0.43; CI95 % 0.25; 0.74) and efficiency (OR = 0.55; CI95 % 0.38; 0.78) were associated with lower Bacteroidetes abundance. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that sleep duration and efficiency are linked to gut microbiota diversity and composition even with 1-2 years gap from exposure to outcome. The findings support the role of sleep in the gut-brain axis as well as provide insights on how to improve microbiota health.

Abstract
Sleep problems are highly prevalent in those with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). We propose this is secondary to multiple factors that directly and indirectly negatively impact sleep and circadian processes in those with NDDs, which in turn, further perturbs development, resulting in a "developmental and sleep/circadian-related encephalopathy." In this review, we discuss select NDDs with known or suspected sleep and circadian phenotypes. We also highlight important considerations when evaluating and treating sleep and circadian disorders in these populations.

Abstract
Sleep problems and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are interrelated during childhood and preadolescence. The objective of this work is assessing if sleep problems at ages 8-9 represent an alarm sign for presenting ADHD problems at ages 10-11 in three cohorts from INMA Study. Participants were 1244 children from Gipuzkoa, Sabadell, and Valencia cohorts. Sleep problems were assessed (ages 8-9) with the sleep items of the Child's Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), and ADHD problems were collected through the Conner's Parent Rating Scales-Revised: Short Form (CPRS-R:S) (age 10-11). Minimally and fully adjusted negative binomial models were fitted for each CPRS-R:S scale. Linearity of the relationship was assessed with generalized additive models (cubic smoothing splines with 2, 3, and 4 knots). For sensitivity analyses, children with previous symptoms, those born preterm and small for gestational age, and cases with extreme values, were excluded. Sleep problems presented IRR (95% CI) of 1.14 (1.10-1.19), 1.20 (1.14-1.26), 1.18 (1.11-1.25), and 1.18 (1.13-1.23) for opposition, inattention, hyperactivity, and ADHD scales, respectively. Fully adjusted models slightly decreased the IRR, but the association remained similar and significant. Sensitivity analyses showed similar results to fully adjusted models with only hyperactivity shown a slight decrease on significance (p = 0.051) when ADHD cases at age 9 were excluded. Conclusion: Sleep problems are an alarm sign for later neurodevelopment problems such as ADHD. Healthcare systems could take advantage implementing policies to pay special attention on the sleep habits and sleep hygiene. This could contribute to add evidence to public health programmes such as the Healthy Child Programme.

Abstract
The chronotype, which reflects the circadian rhythm preferences of individuals in their daily activities and sleep-wake cycles, can be considered on a dimension of extreme morningism and extreme eveningism. Individuals with extreme morning and extreme evening chronotypes face many physical and psychological dangers due to accumulated sleep debt, short total sleep time and insufficient sleep efficiency. In extreme chronotypes, especially in extreme evening people, the social jet-lag effect due to the mismatch between social and circadian clocks is thought to exacerbate these dangers. More recent studies have suggested that social jet-lag and chronotype have many negative effects on cognitive functioning. The aim of this article is to review the impact of social jet-lag and chronotype on cognitive functioning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study compared measurements of sleep and wake assessed with actigraphy, sleep diary and polysomnography in children with Down syndrome (DS) and also compared measures of actigraphic sleep recording in children with DS and typically developing (TD) children. METHODS Children with DS aged 3-19 years (N = 44) referred for assessment of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) underwent overnight polysomnography, together with 1 week of actigraphy with sleep diary. Actigraphy data from the children with DS were compared with data collected from TD children, matched for age and sex. RESULTS 22 children (50%) with DS completed >3 consecutive nights of actigraphy with a matched sleep diary. There were no differences between bedtimes, wake times or time in bed on weeknights, weekends or over 7 nights between actigraphy and sleep diary. Total sleep time was over estimated by the sleep diary by almost 2 h and the number of night awakenings under-reported. Compared to matched TD children (N = 22), there was no difference in total sleep time, however children with DS fell asleep more quickly (p < 0.001), had more awakenings (p = 0.001) and more time awake after sleep onset (p = 0.007). Children with DS exhibited less variability in both bedtimes and wake times, and fewer had >1 h sleep schedule variability. CONCLUSIONS Parental sleep diaries over-estimate total sleep time but accurately report bed and wake times compared to actigraphy in children with DS. Children with DS have more regular sleep patterns than TD children of the same age, which is important for optimising daytime functioning. The reasons behind this warrant further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to elucidate the association between sleep and academic performance using standardized academic assessment in a large and representative sample of school children and adolescents in Hong Kong. METHODS This school-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 2016. Students completed territory-wide standardized tests in Chinese, English, and Mathematics and a set of questionnaires covering sleep, academic anxiety and motivation. Parents provided additional information on socioeconomic status and children's study behaviors. Weekday proxy sleep duration was reflected by time-in-bed, the difference between bedtime and wakeup time. RESULTS The study included 4262 Grade 3 (G.3) (mean age [SD], 9.2 [0.6] years; girls: 49.7%) and 3297 G.9 students (mean age [SD], 15.3 [0.74]; girls: 57.5%) from 77 schools. Apart from showing a general insufficiency of students' sleep in this metropolitan city, there was a significant quadratic relationship (G.3: β = -0.05, p < .001; G.9: β = -0.03, p < .01), indicating that students with an optimal level of sleep (9.5 h and 8.5 h in G.3 and G.9, respectively) tend to have better academic performance. The significant association remained after controlling for socioeconomic and study-related variables in that sleeping too little or too much was associated with poor academic performance. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to explore the curvilinear association between sleep duration and academic performance by using standardized test and simultaneously examining learning-related controls with a large representative sample in Hong Kong. The findings suggested that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and academic performance in both school-aged children and adolescents. It is recommended that systematic sleep education and intervention is necessary to encourage the development of optimal sleep pattern, which might have beneficial effect on academic performance for students at both primary and secondary level.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Transgender or gender-nonconforming (TGNC) identity is associated with higher burden of sleep disorders relative to cisgender identity. However, the role of gender-affirming therapy (GAT) in sleep disorders is poorly understood. This study examined relationships between TGNC identity, transition, and sleep disorders among TGNC and cisgender youth. METHODS This retrospective cross-sectional study utilized a large US-based administrative claims database (deidentified Optum Clinformatics Data Mart Database) to identify youth aged 12-25 years who obtained a diagnosis of TGNC identity and those who pursued GAT. Descriptive statistics estimated distributions of demographic and health characteristics by gender identity. Unadjusted and age-adjusted logistic regression models were used to examine associations between TGNC identity, GAT, and sleep disorders. RESULTS This study included 1,216,044 youth, of which 2,603 (0.2%) were identified as TGNC. Among the 1,387 TGNC who pursued GAT, 868 and 519 were identified as transmasculine and transfeminine, respectively. Adjusted analysis showed increased odds of insomnia (odds ratio = 5.4, 95% confidence interval 4.7, 6.2), sleep apnea (odds ratio = 3.0, 95% confidence interval 2.3, 4.0), and other sleep disorders (odds ratio = 3.1, 95% confidence interval 2.5, 3.9) in TGNC relative to cisgender youth. Decreased odds of any sleep disorder were observed in the TGNC youth on GAT (odds ratio = 0.5, 95% confidence interval 0.4, 0.7) relative to those not on GAT. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated a high burden of sleep disorders in TGNC youth in comparison to cisgender. However, GAT may confer a protective effect on sleep disorders among TGNC youth. Abstract
Although the relationship between sleep and academic performance has been extensively examined, how sleep predicts future academic performance (e.g., 2-3 years) remains to be further investigated. Using wearable smartwatches and a self-report questionnaire, we tracked sleep activities of 45 college students over a period of approximately half a month to see whether their sleep activities predicted their academic performance, which was estimated by grade point average (GPA). Results showed that both nighttime sleep awakening frequency and its consistency in the tracking period were not significantly correlated with the GPA for the courses taken in the sleep tracking semester (current GPA). However, both nighttime sleep awakening frequency and its consistency inversely predicted the GPA for the rest of the courses taken after that semester (future GPA). Moreover, students with more difficulty staying awake throughout the day obtained lower current and future GPAs, and students with higher inconsistency of sleep quality obtained lower future GPA. Together, these findings highlight the importance of nighttime sleep awakening frequency and consistency in predicting future academic performance, and emphasize the necessity of assessing the consistency of sleep measures in future studies.

Abstract
There is a close relationship between sleep and depression, and certain maladaptive outcomes of sleep problems may only be apparent in individuals with heightened levels of depression. In a sample enriched for preschool depression, we examined how sleep and depression in early childhood interact to predict later trajectories of gray matter volume. Participants (N = 161) were recruited and assessed during preschool (ages 3–6 years) and were later assessed with five waves of structural brain imaging, spanning from late childhood to adolescence. Sleep and depression were assessed using a semi-structured parent interview when the children were preschool-aged, and total gray matter volume was calculated at each scan wave. Although sleep disturbances alone did not predict gray matter volume/trajectories, preschool sleep and depression symptoms interacted to predict later total gray matter volume and the trajectory of decline in total gray matter volume. Sleep disturbances in the form of longer sleep onset latencies, increased irregularity in the child’s sleep schedule, and higher levels of daytime sleepiness in early childhood were all found to interact with early childhood depression severity to predict later trajectories of cortical gray matter volume. Findings provide evidence of the interactive effects of preschool sleep and depression symptoms on later neurodevelopment.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected sleep health. Students' sleep health is essential for the performance of neuro-cognitive processes, as well as mental and physical balance. We assume the COVID19 pandemic has modified some sleep habits by prompting environmental and social interaction changes. In this study we surveyed a sample of 300 Brazilian students, with internet access, resident in the Federal District. They completed a questionnaire over two weeks in March 2020, i.e. the second and third week of the social isolation policy enacted in the Federal District due to COVID19. Valid responses from students aged18-24 years were analyzed. The sample was mostly female; 76,3% reported somnolence during the day, 70,2% anxiety and 87,8% worse sleep associated with stress and/or anxiety, which indicated the variables for an educational health intervention design in this context. Further, 53.2% made no effort to avoid screens before sleeping; 73.9% to avoid using the bed for work or watching television and 83.1% to avoid consuming heavy foods before sleeping. We then created an Instagram profile, @comodormimos, which focused on the main sleep issues revealed by participants in the survey. Posts on the profile were based on sleep-related subjects: sleep processes, sleep hygiene practices for students; sleep stages, function and regulation; and sleep-wake circadian rhythms. The profile gained 307 followers, mostly women (61,7%), 18-24 years old. We concluded that the Covid-10 pandemic period increased harmful sleep behavior in students. Further studies are needed to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on student sleep health.

Abstract
Our aim is to use neurophysiological sleep-related consolidation (SRC) phenomena to identify putative pathophysiological mechanisms in CECTS linked to diffuse neurocognitive deficits. We argue that there are numerous studies on the association between seizure aspects and neurocognitive functioning but not as many on interictal variables and neurocognitive deficits. We suggest two additional foci. First, the interictal presentation in CECTS and second, neuronal oscillations involved in SRC processes. Existing data on mechanisms through which interictal epileptiform spikes (IES) impact upon SRC indicate that they have the potential to: (a) perturb cross-regional coupling of neuronal oscillations, (b) mimic consolidation processes, (c) alter the precision of the spatiotemporal coupling of oscillations, and (d) variably impact upon SRC performance. Sleep spindles merit systematic study in CECTS in order to clarify: (a) the state of the slow oscillations (SOs) with which they coordinate, (b) the precision of slow oscillation-spindle coupling, and (c) whether their developmental trajectories differ from those of healthy children. We subsequently review studies on the associations between IES load during NREM sleep and SRC performance in childhood epilepsy. We then use sleep consolidation neurophysiological processes and their interplay with IES to help clarify the diffuse neurocognitive deficits that have been empirically documented in CECTS. We claim that studying SRC in CECTS will help to clarify pathophysiological mechanisms toward diverse neurocognitive deficits. Future developments could include close links between the fields of epilepsy and sleep, as well as new therapeutic neurostimulation targets. At the clinical level, children diagnosed with CECTS could benefit from close monitoring with respect to epilepsy, sleep and neurocognitive functions.

Abstract
The breadth of childhood sleep problems is broad and can be associated with biologic, psychiatric, behavioral, social, and environmental processes. Unrecognized childhood sleep problems may threaten daytime behaviors and negatively impact school and psychosocial functioning. Left unattended, overall child biopsychosocial development may be impaired. Thus, identifying and addressing sleep problems has potential to optimize childhood health, development, and overall well-being. Nurses need to be cognizant of detrimental impacts of child sleep deprivation and advocate for appropriate sleep assessments while offering sleep education to parents and children.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate if a sensory intervention of moderate pressure touch of children with sensory processing disorder (SPD) affects sleep behaviours and sensory processing behaviours.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 50 children, aged 5–11 years with both SPD and sleep difficulties in Israel, were randomly divided into an experimental and a control group, nonblinded. Participants in the experimental group received three weeks of nightly massage by their parents, with a baseline week on both ends. Parents filled out questionnaires reporting on sensory and sleep behaviours and filled out a nightly sleep log. Parents determined outcome goals using goal attainment scoring. The assessment tools used were the short sensory profile and the child sleep habits questionnaire (Dunn, 1999; Owens et al., 2000).
Findings
Significant improvement was found in the total and subgroup scores of sleep participation measures including sleep onset, sleep anxiety, parasomnias, sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, as well as the total sleep score (F (1,48) = 24.71, p < 0.001).
Originality/value
Results of this study suggest that consistent application of moderate pressure touch as advised or trained by an occupational therapist may be used in clinical practice to improve sleep participation in children with SPD.
