Behavior and fate of alkylphenols in surface water of the Jialu River, Henan Province, China

Bisphenol A contamination in Hilsa shad and assessment of potential health hazard: A pioneering investigation in the national river Ganga, India

The anadromous Hilsa, often known as the "Queen of Fishes" (Tenualosa ilisha), is the most valuable fishery in the Ganga-Hooghly delta estuary. Although BPA exposure has been shown to be harmful to aquatic organisms, no research has looked at the effects of BPA on the commercially valuable Hilsa shad of river Ganga. To close this information vacuum, we examined BPA levels in Hilsa fish from the Ganga estuary. Liver, muscle, kidney, and gonads were all positive for BPA among the Hilsa fish of all ages. Liver BPA levels were highest in adult males (272.16 ± 0.38 ng/g-dw), and lowest in juveniles (5.46 ± 0.06 ng/g-dw). BPA concentrations in the Hilsa shad muscle were highest in reproductively mature females (196.23 ± 0.41 ng/g-dw). The study also discovered a correlation between fish development and BPA exposure, with higher levels of BPA being identified in adult Hilsa species. This is the first study to look at the impact of BPA pollution on aquatic ecosystems and fisheries, and it showed that Hilsa shad is contaminated with BPA and poses health hazards to human beings. The results, which demonstrate BPA contamination, are useful for protecting Hilsa in the river Ganga.

Distribution and source apportionment of phenolic EDCs in rivers in the Pearl River Delta, South China

The sources and distribution characteristics of three phenolic endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), e.g., alkylphenols (APs) (including nonylphenols (NPs) and 4-t-octylphenol (OP)) and Bisphenol A (BPA), were investigated in the rivers of the Pearl River Delta Region (PRDR) with complex land-use types. The mean concentrations of NPs, OP, and BPA in river water including wet and dry seasons were 87, 6, and 74 ng/L in the agricultural regions (n = 10), 135, 7, and 61 ng/L in the transitional regions (n = 8), and 249, 15, and 152 ng/L in the urban regions (n = 28). Contents of NPs and BPA were high in the river sediments (ranged from 7 to 3048 ng/g and 2 to 271 ng/g, respectively). Equilibrium analysis results suggested that sediment release was not the main source of the river EDCs. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that sewage was the major source of EDCs in the dry season, while the leaching effect of rainfall on the agricultural soils, urban roads, and commercial products was an important source in the wet season. Furthermore, the ratio of APs and total concentration of phenolic EDCs (ΣEDCs) was used to characterize the agricultural regions and urban regions in the PRDR. The ratio was less than 0.6 in the agricultural regions while the ratio was large than 0.6 in the dry season and less than 0.6 in the wet season in urban regions. BPA and NPs in transitional region and urban region had small/medium potential risk to aquatic organisms.

Analysis of surfactants by mass spectrometry: Coming to grips with their diversity

Surfactants are surface-active agents widely used in numerous applications in our daily lives as personal care products, domestic, and industrial detergents. To determine complex mixtures of surfactants and their degradation products, unselective and rather insensitive methods, based on colorimetric and complexometric analyses are no longer employable. Analytical methodologies able to determine low concentration levels of surfactants and closely related compounds in complex matrices are required. The recent introduction of robust, sensitive, and selective mass spectrometry (MS) techniques has led to the rapid expansion of the surfactant research field including complex mixtures of isomers, oligomers, and homologues of surfactants as well as their chemically and biodegradation products at trace levels. In this review, emphasis is given to the state-of-the-art MS-based analysis of surfactants and their degradation products with an overview of the current research landscape from traditional methods involving hyphenate techniques (gas chromatography-MS and liquid chromatography-MS) to the most innovative approaches, based on high-resolution MS. Finally, we outline a detailed explanation on the utilization of MS for mechanistic purposes, such as the study of micelle formation in different solvents.

Toxicity of nonylphenol and nonylphenol ethoxylate on Caenorhabditis elegans

Among the most used chemicals in the world are nonionic surfactants. One of these environmental pollutants is nonylphenol ethoxylate (NP-9), also known as Tergitol, and its degradation product, nonylphenol (NP). The objective of this work was to determine the toxicity of NP and NP-9 in Caenorhabditis elegans. Wild-type L4 larvae were exposed to different concentrations of the surfactants to measure functional endpoints. Mutant strains were employed to promote the activation of toxicity signaling pathways related to mtl-2, gst-1, gpx-4, gpx-6, sod-4, hsp-70 and hsp-4. Additionally, stress response was also assessed using a daf-16::GFP transgenic strain. The lethality was concentration dependent, with 24-h LC₅₀ of 122 μM and 3215 μM for NP and NP-9, respectively. Both compounds inhibited nematode growth, although NP was more potent; and at non-lethal concentrations, nematode locomotion was reduced. The increase in the expression of tested genes was significant at 10 μM for NP-9 and 0.001 μM for NP, implying a likely role for the activation of oxidative and cellular stress, as well as metabolism pathways. With the exception of glutathione peroxidase, which has a bimodal concentration-response curve for NP, typical of endocrine disruption, the other curves for this xenobiotic in the strains evaluated were almost flat for most concentrations, until reaching 50-100 μM, where the effect peaked. NP and NP-9 induced the activation and nuclear translocation of DAF-16, suggesting that transcription of stress-response genes may be mediated by the insulin/IGF-1 signaling pathway. In contrast, NP-9 induced a concentration-dependent response for the sod-4 and hsp-4 mutants, with greater fluorescence induction than NP at similar levels. In short, NP and NP-9 affect the physiology of C. elegans and modulate gene expression related to ROS production, cellular stress and metabolism of xenobiotics.

Distribution and ecological risk assessment of PEDCs in the water, sediment and Carex cinerascens of Poyang Lake wetland, China

Phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals (PEDCs), such as 4-nonylphenol (NP), 4-t-octylphenol (OP), bisphenol A (BPA), and nonylphenol-di-ethoxylate (NP2EO), can cause feminization and carcinogenesis. This study assessed the distributions of NP, OP, BPA, and NP2EO in the water, sediment, and Carex cinerascens of Poyang Lake wetland. The four PEDCs were ubiquitous. The concentrations of NP and OP in the water and sediment of the wetland were significantly lower than those in other regions of China. Average BPA concentrations in the water, sediment, and Carex cinerascens samples were 40.49 ± 18.42 ng/L, 9.840 ± 3.149 ng/g, and 3.25 ± 1.40 ng/g, respectively; the BPA concentration in the water was similar to that of other rivers in China. Average NP2EO concentrations in the wetland were 3125.9 ± 478.1 ng/L, 650.0 ± 209.9 ng/g, and 275.8 ± 59.0 ng/g in the water, sediment, and Carex cinerascens samples, respectively. The predicted no-effect concentrations in sediment for NP, OP, BPA, and NP2EO were estimated to be 75.41, 45.25, 8.22, and 237.5 ng/g, respectively. The risk quotient (RQ) method was used to characterise the ecological risk from these PEDCs. A high ecological risk (RQ ≥ 1) from BPA was observed for 0%, 57.69%, and 5.00% of water, sediment, and C. cinerascens samples, respectively, while a high risk from NP2EO was observed for 71.43%, 96.15%, and 55.00% of samples. Ecological risk varied spatially. The high ecological risk from NP2EO in Poyang Lake wetland may be a result of non-point pollution from rural areas and sewage from Poyang Lake basin.

The effects of urbanization and rainfall on the distribution of, and risks from, phenolic environmental estrogens in river sediment

There is increasing concern about phenolic environmental estrogens (PEEs) in river systems, especially in economically developed regions, because of their potential to impact ecological systems. We studied the distribution of, ecological risks from, and factors that influenced PEEs in the sediments from the Duliujian River in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban Agglomeration and the Pearl River in Guangdong Province in China. The three target PEEs, nonyl phenol (4-NP), octyl phenol (4-t-OP), and bisphenol A (BPA), were detected in the sediments at concentrations ranging from 204.4 to 12604.3, 32.6 to 297.3, and from 12.8 to 298.4 ng g^-1 in the Pearl River, and from 153.5 to 3614.9, 90.7 to 990.0, and 83.5-913.3 ng g^-1 in the Duliujian River, respectively. The PEE concentrations were significantly and positively correlated with total organic carbon in the river sediments (p < 0.1). Urbanization influenced the distribution of PEEs and applications and discharges of PEEs were associated with large populations and industries. Rainfall and wastewater discharge patterns also influenced how PEEs were distributed in river sediments. The potential ecological risks from 4-NP, 4-t-OP, and BPA in these two rivers were high. Measures should be put in place to control the transport and storage of these compounds in river systems.

Ecological risks of phenolic endocrine disrupting compounds in an urban tropical river

The distribution of emerging organic contaminants in drinking water sources in Africa is a subject with very scanty data and information. In order to fill knowledge gaps, we report here the distribution and potential ecological risks of three phenolic compounds (bisphenol A (BPA), 4-nonylphenol (NP), and 4-tert-octylphenol (OP)), which have been previously identified to have the potential of endocrine disrupting activity, in surface water and sediment of the New Calabar River. The compounds were quantified using GC-MS. At all sampling sites, a similar concentration pattern of BPA > NP > OP was recorded, with the exception of Choba sampling station in which the levels of these endocrine disrupting compounds were low or undetectable. The levels of BPA in surface water ranged from 1.20 to 63.64 μg/L, whereas those of NP and OP ranged from < 0.20 to 2.15 μg/L and from < 0.10 to 0.68 μg/L, respectively. For sediments, measured levels were from 1.20 to 66.57 μg/kg for BPA, from < 0.35 to 3.37 μg/kg for NP, and from < 0.13 to 0.90 μg/kg for OP. Risk quotients (RQs) assessed for some sensitive organisms (algae, Daphnia magna, and fish) were above 1 for BPA and NP, whereas RQs for OP were below 1. This implies that BPA and NP at the levels detected could have potential risks to the sensitive organisms considered, but low risk for OP.

Utilization of activated carbon for maximizing the efficiency of zirconium oxide for photodegradation of 4-octylphenol

Utilization of AC/zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) for the removal of 4-octylphenol (4-OP) from aqueous solution has been studied under simulated visible-light as a cost effective technique. To draw complete images for the prepared materials, a series of characterization methods was performed. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) data has proved that AC has high surface area and total pore volumes that are decreased after incorporation of ZrO₂. Morphologically, TEM showed massive quantity of ZrO₂ spherical shape nanoparticles loaded with carbon and EDX showed the uniform distribution of all the prepared materials. The photocatalytic performance has been traced via adopting a matrix effect analysis to correlate the photodegradation of 4-OP in the presence of visible light as a time function, pH, photocatalyst dose and initial concentration of 4-OP. The positive impact of AC content in AC/ZrO₂ composite on the adsorption of 4-OP was strikingly observed with expanding the AC content in AC/ZrO₂ composite up to 33% (wt/wt). Almost 97% of the 4-OP was removed within 180 min under simulated visible light. The optimum reaction conditions for 95% removal of 4-OP were 120 min, 1 g L^-1 catalyst dose at pH 8. The photocatalytic degradation of the 4-OP was well fitted with pseudo first-order L-H kinetic model.

Assessment of the cytotoxic and mutagenic potential of the Jialu River and adjacent groundwater using human-hamster hybrid cells

The Jialu River in China has been seriously polluted by the direct discharge of industrial and domestic wastewater. The predominant contaminants of the Jialu River and its adjacent groundwater were recently investigated. However, the potential genotoxic impact of polluted water on human health remains to be clarified. Here, we used human-hamster hybrid (A_L) cells, which are sensitive for detecting environmental mutagens. We found that the cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of the groundwater in the Jialu River basin were influenced by the infiltration of the Jialu River. Hydrological periods significantly affected the cytotoxicity, but not the mutagenic potential, of surface and groundwater. Further, the mutagenic potential of groundwater samples located <1km from the Jialu River (S_M-2 water samples) was detected earlier than that of groundwater samples located approximately 20km from the Jialu River (S_N water samples). Because of high cytotoxicity, the mutagenic potential of water samples from the Jialu River (S_M-1 water samples) was not significantly enhanced compared with that of untreated controls. To further assess the mutagenic dispersion potential, an artificial neural network model was adopted. The results showed that the highest mutagenic potential of groundwater was observed approximately 10km from the Jialu River. Although further investigation of mutagenic spatial dispersion is required, our data are significant for advancing our understanding of the origin, dispersion, and biological effects of water samples from polluted areas.

Distribution and fate modeling of 4-nonylphenol, 4-t-octylphenol, and bisphenol A in the Yong River of China

In this study, the concentrations of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP), and bisphenol A (BPA) in the water column of the Yong River were investigated and found to be in the range of 140-3948, 6-828, and 15-1415 ng L^-1, respectively. A fate and transport model coupled with the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP) was developed. After model calibration and validation, the distributions of 4-NP, 4-t-OP, and BPA in the Yong River were modeled for the duration of 2015. The total contaminant loads from the upstream boundary, four tributaries and two wastewater treatment plants were determined to be 2318 kg yr^-1 for 4-NP, 506 kg yr^-1 for 4-t-OP, and 970 kg yr^-1 for BPA. Both measured and modeled results reported higher concentrations of the selected contaminants near river confluences and at the outfalls of the wastewater treatment plants. Peak concentrations were found to always appear in months with relatively reduced precipitation. The influences of adsorption and degradation on the dissolved concentrations of the selected chemicals were also modeled. The combined effects of adsorption and degradation were found to reduce dissolved concentrations of 4-NP, 4-t-OP, and BPA by 17.9%, 30.7%, and 12.1%, respectively. Adsorption was shown to reduce 4-NP concentrations in the Yong River more than degradation. Conversely, adsorption and degradation caused almost equal reductions in the dissolved concentrations of 4-t-OP and degradation caused larger decreases than adsorption in the dissolved concentrations of BPA.

Ammonium removal by native microbes and activated sludge within the Jialu River basin and the associated microbial community structures

To explore the availability of native microbes and activated sludge for ammonium removal, the native microbes and activated sludge in Jialu River basin were investigated in terms of ammonium-removing activities and their microbial communities using spectrophotometry and high-throughput sequencing. NH₄⁺-N and total nitrogen (TN) in the targeted river ranged from 2.45 ± 1.76 to 8.56 ± 2.54 mg/L and from 3.42 ± 2.79 to 13.49 ± 5.06 mg/L, respectively. Both the native microbes and activated sludge had strong ammonium-removing activities with the removal efficiencies of more than 94%. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that, after five batches of operation, the class Gammaproteobacteria (28.55%), Alphaproteobacteria (14.55%), Betaproteobacteria (13.89%), Acidobacteria (8.82%) and Bacilli (7.04%) were dominated in native community, and there was a predominance of Gammaproteobacteria (21.57%), Betaproteobacteria (16.33%), Acidobacteria (12.41%), Alphaproteobacteria (10.01%), Sphingobacteriia (6.92%) and Bacilli (6.66%) in activated sludge. These two microbial sources were able to remove ammonium, while activated sludge was more cost-effective.

Distribution and bioaccumulation of endocrine disrupting chemicals in water, sediment and fishes in a shallow Chinese freshwater lake: Implications for ecological and human health risks

The occurrence, distribution and bioaccumulation of six endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) were investigated in water, sediment and biota samples from Luoma Lake, a shallow Chinese freshwater lake. Total concentrations of ∑phenolic EDCs were much higher than ∑estrogens EDCs in both waters and sediments. There were not obvious differences on the concentrations of target compounds [except nonylphenol (NP)] in upstream, lake and downstream locations, these may be suggested that they were mainly affected by non-point discharges in this area. However, the high concentration of NP in water may be associated with the discharge of rural domestic wastewater without thorough treatment. Furthermore, concentrations of NP were about 2-3 order magnitude higher than those of OP in both water and sediment compartments. Relatively higher bioaccumulation factors (BAF) were obtained for DES and EE2. Ecological risk assessment revealed greater risk of NP in surface water, which may pose a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems. The estrogen equivalent concentration (EEQ) of male were higher than those in female, and occurred in the order of city >rural-urban>countryside.

Occurrence, distribution and risk assessment of suspected endocrine-disrupting chemicals in surface water and suspended particulate matter of Yangtze River (Nanjing section)

The occurrence and distribution of eight selected endocrine-disrupting chemicals were investigated in samples of surface water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) in Nanjing section of Yangtze River over a year (the flow period, the wet period and the dry period). All target compounds were detected at least once in surface water with 4-tert-butylphenol (4-TBP), nonyphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA) as the dominant compounds, with concentrations in the range of 225-1121ng/L, 1.4-858ng/L and 1.7-563ng/L, respectively. Except for December, all selected compounds for the other sampling times were not found in all sampling points. NP (mean concentration 69.8µg/g) and BPA (mean concentration 51.8µg/g) were also the dominant estrogens in SPM. In addition, the highest total compounds concentrations were found in December in both phases, which could be due to the low flow conditions and temperature during this season. Meanwhile, a significant positive correlation was found between the total compounds concentrations in the water phase and those in SPM phase. Risk assessment based on the calculated risk quotients (RQ) showed that low and moderate risk for the aquatic environment from presence of the target compounds at all sampling points with exception of 4-TBP and NP which might pose a high risk to aquatic organisms.

Occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of alkylphenols, bisphenol A, and tetrabromobisphenol A in surface water, suspended particulate matter, and sediment in Taihu Lake and its tributaries

The occurrence and distribution of nine selected compounds were investigated in surface water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment in Taihu Lake and its tributaries. With the exception of 4-Butylphenol, all compounds were detected in at least two phases, and nonylphenol (NP) and 4-tert-Octylphenol (4-OP) were the predominant alkylphenols (APs) in the lake. A significant correlation was observed between NP and 4-OP, indicating that they may share the same source. Moreover, surface water phase was the dominant sink of Bisphenol A (BPA) in the aquatic environment. The concentrations of BPA between the surface water and SPM phases were closely related to each other. In addition, Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) exhibited relatively higher concentrations and detection frequencies in the SPM. Risk assessment revealed greater risk associated with the surface water than the sediment, indicating that the discharge of industrial wastewater and domestic sewage poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems.

Phenolic endocrine-disrupting chemicals and intersex in wild crucian carp from Hun River, China

This study investigated the concentrations of phenolic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and the incidence of ovo-testis (intersex) in wild crucian carp (Carassius carassius) sampled from the Hun River. As expected, nonylphenols (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA) were detected in all samples, and octylphenols (OP) were found in most samples. NP concentrations ranged from 1290 ± 584 to 3111 ± 2071 ng g(-1) wet weight (ww) in July and from 1132 ± 644 to 1556 ± 587 ng g(-1) ww in November; OP ranged from 6 ± 7 to 46 ± 38 ng g(-1) ww in July and from no detection to 22 ± 16 ng g(-1) ww in November; and BPA ranged from 4 ± 9 to 41 ± 24 ng g(-1) ww in July and from 6 ± 5 to 59 ± 24 ng g(-1) ww in November. Moreover, the concentrations of these compounds were higher in fish found down-stream of the sewage treatment plant (STP), and the lowest concentrations were found in fish up-stream of the STP. Concentrations of these EDCs in muscles might be correlated with the prevalence of intersex traits in wild fish, suggesting that these compounds contribute, at least in part, to the occurrence of intersex morphology. Thus, phenolic EDCs discharged from the STP pose a risk to the aquatic ecosystem in the Hun River.

Spatial-temporal distribution and potential ecological risk assessment of nonylphenol and octylphenol in riverine outlets of Pearl River Delta, China

The aquatic environments of the Pearl River Delta in Southern China are subjected to contamination with various industrial chemicals from local industries. In this paper, the occurrence, seasonal variation and spatial distribution of alkylphenol octylphenol (OP) and nonylphenol (NP) in river surface water and sediments in the runoff outlets of the Pearl River Delta were investigated. NP and OP were detected in all water and sediment samples and their mean concentrations in surface water during the dry season ranged from 810 to 3366 ng/L and 85.5 to 581 ng/L, respectively, and those in sediments ranged from 14.2 to 95.2 ng/g dw and 0.4 to 3.0 ng/g dw, respectively. In surface water, much higher concentrations were detected in the dry season than those in the wet season. In sediments, the concentrations in the dry season were also mostly higher. High concentrations of NP and OP were found in Humen outlet, likely due to high levels of domestic and industrial wastewater discharges. An ecological risk assessment with the use of hazard quotient (HQ) was also carried out and the HQ values ranged from 3.6×10(-5) to 35 and 64% of samples gave a HQ>1, indicating that the current levels of NP and OP pose a significant risk to the relevant aquatic organisms in the region.

Alkylphenols in surface sediments of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea inner shelf: occurrence, distribution and fate

Alkylphenols (APs) have been found as ubiquitous environmental pollutants with reproductive and developmental toxicity. In this study, APs in surface sediments of the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS) inner shelf were analyzed to assess influences of riverine and atmospheric inputs of pollutants on the marine environment. NP concentrations ranged from 349.5 to 1642.8 ng/g (average 890.1 ng/g) in the YS sediments and from 31.3 to 1423.7 ng/g (average 750.1 ng/g) in the ECS inner shelf sediments. NP distribution pattern was mainly controlled by the sedimentary environment. OP concentration was 0.8-9.3 ng/g (average 4.7 ng/g) in the YS sediments and 0.7-11.1 ng/g (average 5.1 ng/g) in the ECS sediments. Assessment of the influence of distances from land on OP concentrations provided evidence for the predominance of coastal riverine and/or atmospheric inputs rather than long-range transport. And the biological pump may play an important role for sequestration of OP in the nearshore area.

Heavy metals in surface sediments of the Jialu River, China: their relations to environmental factors

This work investigated heavy metal pollution in surface sediments of the Jialu River, China. Sediment samples were collected at 19 sites along the river in connection with field surveys and the total concentrations were determined using atomic fluorescence spectrometer and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer. Sediment samples with higher metal concentrations were collected from the upper reach of the river, while sediments in the middle and lower reaches had relatively lower metal concentrations. Multivariate techniques including Pearson correlation, hierarchical cluster and principal components analysis were used to evaluate the metal sources. The ecological risk associated with the heavy metals in sediments was rated as moderate based on the assessments using methods of consensus-based Sediment Quality Guidelines, Potential Ecological Risk Index and Geo-accumulation Index. The relations between heavy metals and various environmental factors (i.e., chemical properties of sediments, water quality indices and aquatic organism indices) were also studied. Nitrate nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentrations in sediments showed a co-release behavior with heavy metals. Ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, orthophosphate, total phosphate and permanganate index in water were found to be related to metal sedimentation. Heavy metals in sediments posed a potential impact on the benthos community.

Occurrence and partitioning of phenolic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) between surface water and suspended particulate matter in the north Tai Lake basin, eastern China

Concentrations and distribution of octylphenol (OP), nonylphenol (NP), and bisphenol A (BPA) in surface water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) from the north Tai Lake basin, China were studied. Aqueous and particulate (dry weight) concentrations for OP, NP, and BPA varied from 10.5-1,175 ng/L to <1.52-5,365 ng/g, respectively. The spatial distribution of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in dissolved and particulate phases showed that the amount of EDCs in water that were adsorbed to SPM gradually increased from upstream to downstream. There were good correlations between particulate EDCs and particulate organic carbon, with correlation coefficients of 0.46-0.57. Regression analysis of in situ SPM-water partition coefficients (log K' oc) and log K ow for EDCs indicated that the hydrophobicity of chemicals greatly contributed to their SPM-water partitioning. Strong positive correlations (r = 0.68-0.82) among in situ log K' oc of OP, NP, and BPA and flow velocity of water were observed, indicating the critical importance of riverine hydrodynamics on the sorption of these compounds.

Is drinking water a major route of human exposure to alkylphenol and bisphenol contaminants in France?

The main objective of this study was to evaluate potential exposure of a significant part of the French population to alkylphenol and bisphenol contaminants due to water consumption. The occurrence of 11 alkylphenols and bisphenols was studied in raw water and treated water samples from public water systems. One sampling campaign was performed from October 2011 to May 2012. Sampling was equally distributed across 100 French departments. In total, 291 raw water samples and 291 treated water samples were analyzed in this study, representing approximately 20 % of the national water supply flow. The occurrence of the target compounds was also determined for 29 brands of bottled water (polyethylene terephthalate [PET] bottles, polycarbonate [PC] reusable containers, and aluminum cans [ACs]) and in 5 drinking water networks where epoxy resin has been used as coating for pipes. In raw water samples, the highest individual concentration was 1,430 ng/L for bisphenol A (BPA). Of the investigated compounds, nonylphenol (NP), nonylphenol 1-carboxylic acid (NP1EC), BPA, and nonylphenol 2-ethoxylate (NP2EO) predominated (detected in 18.6, 18.6, 14.4, and 10 % of samples, respectively). Geographical variability was observed with departments crossed by major rivers or with high population densities being more affected by contamination. In treated water samples, the highest individual concentration was 505 ng/L for NP. Compared with raw water, target compounds were found in lower amounts in treated water. This difference suggests a relative effectiveness of certain water treatments for the elimination of these pollutants; however, there is also their possible transformation by reaction with chlorine. No target compounds were found in drinking water pipes coated with epoxy resin, in PET bottled water, or in water from ACs. However, levels of BPA in PC bottled water ranged from 70 to 4,210 ng/L with greater level observed in newly manufactured bottles. 4-Tert-butylphenol was only detected in recently manufactured bottles. The values observed for the monitored compounds indicate that drinking water is most likely not the main source of exposure.

The potential role of water quality parameters on occurrence of nonylphenol and bisphenol A and identification of their discharge sources in the river ecosystems

Nonylphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA) have attracted great attention due to their estrongenic activities and occurrence in different environments. This study investigated concentrations of NP and BPA in water and sediments of 16 major rivers in Taiwan to determine their association with water quality parameters on their distribution. The sources of NP and BPA discharged into river environments were also identified. The results showed that concentrations of NP and BPA were in the range of 0.02-3.94 and 0.01-44.65μgL(-1) in water and 6.59-47797.69 and 0.37-491.54μgkg(-1) dry weight in sediments. High levels of NP and BPA in water and sediments were measured in sampling sites near highly industrialized and urbanized areas. Construction of the sewage system and wastewater treatment plant has decreased these chemicals discharged into Love River. Dilution effects and erosion of surface sediments in the high-flow season resulted in lower concentrations of NP and BPA detected in sediments of most rivers than those in the low-flow season. Occurrence characteristics of NP and BPA in water and sediments were mainly related to organic carbon contents in sediments and several water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, concentrations of ammonia-nitrogen and total organic carbon in water. Effluents from NP/BPA-related factories appeared to be the major discharge sources of NP and BPA. Use and waste of BPA-containing products in household activity was the another discharge source of BPA, but handling NP-containing products became an important source of NP only in the low-flow season.

Determination of three alkylphenol isomers in various water samples using a new HPLC method based on a duet stationary phase

The level of three alkylphenols (APs) 4-nonylphenol, 4-octylphenol and 4-tert-octylphenol was monitored in various water samples using a new developed and validated HPLC method. The HPLC method employed a column with a mixed-mode stationary phase (C18/SCX) using a mobile phase of water to methanol = 15:85 (v/v) delivered at a flow rate of 1 mL/min at room temperature. Both diode array, DAD and fluorescence, FLD detectors were employed. The method is linear when APs concentration ranged from 0.025 to 0.5 μg/mL with a DAD detection at 279 nm and between 0.0008 and 0.1 μg/mL when the detection was made by FLD (excitation at 220 nm, emission at 315 nm). The limit of detection and limit of quantitation for alkylphenols were found to be 5 and 15 ng/mL, respectively (detection by DAD). The method was employed with good results for the determination of APs in the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in various water samples.

Occurrence and biodegradation of nonylphenol in the environment

Nonylphenol (NP) is an ultimate degradation product of nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPE) that is primarily used in cleaning and industrial processes. Its widespread use has led to the wide existence of NP in various environmental matrices, such as water, sediment, air and soil. NP can be decreased by biodegradation through the action of microorganisms under aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Half-lives of biodegradation ranged from a few days to almost one hundred days. The degradation rate for NP was influenced by temperature, pH and additions of yeast extracts, surfactants, aluminum sulfate, acetate, pyruvate, lactate, manganese dioxide, ferric chloride, sodium chloride, hydrogen peroxide, heavy metals, and phthalic acid esters. Although NP is present at low concentrations in the environment, as an endocrine disruptor the risks of long-term exposure to low concentrations remain largely unknown. This paper reviews the occurrence of NP in the environment and its aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation in natural environments and sewage treatment plants, which is essential for assessing the potential risk associated with low level exposure to NP and other endocrine disruptors.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments of the Jialu River

The Jialu River, an important branch of the Huaihe River in China, was seriously polluted because of rapid economic growth and urbanization. In order to evaluate the potential for serious environmental consequences as a result of anthropogenic contamination, the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been investigated in surface sediment samples collected in connection with field surveys of 19 sites along the Jialu River. The total concentration of the 16 USEPA priority PAHs ranged from 466.0 to 2605.6 ng/g dry weight with a mean concentration of 1363.2 ng/g. Sediment samples with the highest PAH concentrations were from the upper reaches of the river, where Zhengzhou City is located; the PAH levels in the middle and lower reaches were relatively low. According to the observed molecular indices, PAHs originated largely from the high-temperature pyrolytic process. According to the numerical effect-based sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) of the United States, the levels of PAHs in the Jialu River should not exert adverse biological effects. The total benzo[a]pyrene toxicity equivalent (TEQ) values calculated for samples varied from 50.4 to 312.8 ng/g dry weight with an average of 167.4 ng/g. The relationships between PAHs and environmental factors, including chemical properties of sediments, water quality, aquatic organisms, hydrological conditions, and anthropogenic activities, are also discussed. PAHs exerted a potential negative impact on the benthos. Settlement percentage, population density and industrial GDP per capita had a significant influence on the distribution of PAHs.

Behavior, mass inventories and modeling evaluation of xenobiotic endocrine-disrupting chemicals along an urban receiving wastewater river in Henan Province, China

Historically, the locations of cities mainly depend on the available water source and the urban river not only supplies the fresh water to city but also receives its wastewaters. To analyze the influences of urban zone on its receiving water river, the Jialu River in Henan Province, China, a typical urban river was chosen. Water and sediment samples were collected along the river in 2007 to analyze the concentrations of xenobiotic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (XEDCs) including nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (OP) and bisphenol A (BPA) in surface water and sediment. The results showed that the concentrations of OP, NP and BPA in surface water were 20.9-63.2 ng L(-1) (mean 39.8 ng L(-1)), 75.2-1520 ng L(-1) (mean 645 ng L(-1)), 410-2990 ng L(-1) (mean 1535 ng L(-1)), respectively. The lowest and highest concentrations of XEDCs in surface water were found in the upper stream and downstream of Zhengzhou urban zone, which was regarded as the major discharge source of these chemicals to this river. The concentrations of OP, NP and BPA in the sediment were 15.9-31.1 ng g(-1), 145-349 ng g(-1) and 626-3584 ng g(-1) with the average concentrations of 21.4 ng g(-1), 257 ng g(-1) and 2291 ng g(-1), respectively. The results of in situ sediment-water partition of XEDCs showed that the partition coefficients (log K(oc)') in the downstream were higher than that in the upstream, which was mainly caused by the retransfer of surface sediment from the upper stream to the downstream. Comparison of measured and theoretical inventories of XEDCs in sediment indicated that the residual time of XEDCs in sediment in the river was about 5 years, which was in the same order of magnitude with its big flood frequency. In order to predict concentration variances of XEDCs in surface water, a fugacity-hydrodynamic model was developed according to the concept of in series completely stirred tank reactors (CSTR). The model results showed that about 29-65% of XEDCs derived from the urban zone (about 2.0 t yr(-1)) would finally dissipate from aqueous phase in the 170 km downstream of the river. Assuming the discharge amount of XEDCs from the urban zone remaining constant, the predicted concentrations of the total XEDCs in the over 90% river reach would be higher than 1.0 μg L(-1) under all normal, high water and low water season in 2007.
