Levels, profiles and source identification of PCDD/Fs in farmland soils of Guiyu, China

Multi-media environmental fate of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in China: A systematic review of emissions, presence, transport modeling and health risks

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are notorious persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with proven toxicity to human and ecosystems. This review critically evaluates existing research, emphasizing knowledge gaps regarding PCDD/F emissions, environmental behavior, human exposure, and associated risks in China. The current emission inventory of PCDD/Fs in China remains highly uncertain, both in terms of total emissions and emission trends. Moreover, existing monitoring data primarily focus on areas near pollution sources, limiting comprehensive understanding of the overall spatiotemporal characteristics of PCDD/F pollution. To address this, we propose a novel approach that integrates the Multi-media Urban Mode (MUM) model with an atmospheric chemical transport model that includes a dual adsorption model to capture gas-particle partitioning of PCDD/Fs in the atmosphere. This coupled model can simulate the transport and fate of PCDD/Fs in multi-media environments with high spatiotemporal resolution, facilitating a nuanced understanding of the impacts of emissions, climate, urbanization and other factors on PCDD/F pollution. Additionally, dietary ingestion, particularly from animal-derived foods, is identified as the predominant source (up to 98%) of human exposure to PCDD/Fs. While the changes in dietary structure, population distribution, and age structure can influence human exposure to PCDD/Fs, their impacts have not yet been quantified. The proposed model lays the foundation for a systematic assessment of health risks from PCDD/F exposure through various pathways by further incorporating a food chain model. Overall, this review offers a comprehensive strategy for assessing PCDD/F pollution, encompassing the entire continuum from emissions to environmental impacts.

Spatial distributions, behaviors, and sources of PCDD/Fs in surface water and sediment from the Yangtze River Delta

The Yangtze River Delta (YRD), one of the most economically developed and industrialized regions in China, is confronted with challenges arising from rapid urbanization, particularly environmental pollution. The collection of surface water and sediment samples from forty-nine sites in the YRD was conducted to analyze 2378-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) congeners. The detected concentrations of PCDD/Fs were 0-5.3 pg TEQ/L in water and 0.12-1493 pg TEQ/g dw in sediment. The PCDD/Fs contamination in the sediment was widespread in the YRD. There were variations in the congener characteristics of PCDD/Fs in surface water and sediment. The proportion of OCDD was significantly lower in surface water samples compared to sediment, while the less chlorine-substituted homologs were found in larger proportions. To understand the partitioning and behavior of dioxins within the water-sediment system, we calculated the organic carbon normalized partition coefficients and fugacity fraction (ff) of PCDD/F congeners. The results revealed that the PCDD/Fs had not attained a state of distributional equilibrium, and the non-specific hydrophobic effect seemed minimally influential on their partitioning between sediment and water. The average ff values, which varied between 0.06 and 0.63, indicated differing migration directions for the PCDD/F congeners. Source identification analysis provided evidence that the dioxins in the river water were primarily attributed to industrial thermal processes. Iron and steel smelting, along with pesticide production and use, were likely responsible for the sediment contamination. This comprehensive analysis underscores the complex nature of PCDD/Fs pollution in the YRD and highlights the necessity for targeted environmental management strategies.

A comprehensive review of toxicity of coal fly ash and its leachate in the ecosystem

Coal fly ash (CFA), a byproduct of coal combustion, is a hazardous industrial solid waste. Its excessive global production, coupled with improper disposal practices, insufficient utilization and limited awareness of its inherent hazards, poses a significant threat to both ecological environment and human health. Based on the physicochemical properties of CFA and its leachates, we elucidate the forms of CFA and potential pathways for its entry into the human body, as well as the leaching behavior, maximum tolerance and biological half-life of toxic elements present in CFA. Furthermore, we provide an overview of current strategies and methods for mitigating the leaching of these harmful elements from CFA. Moreover, we systemically summarize toxic effect of CFA on organisms across various tiers of complexity, analyze epidemiological findings concerning the human health implications resulting from CFA exposure, and delve into the biotoxicological mechanisms of CFA and its leachates at cellular and molecular levels. This review aims to enhance understanding of the potential toxicity of CFA, thereby promoting increased public awareness regarding the disposal and management of this industrial waste.

Review of thermal treatments for the degradation of dioxins in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash: Proposing a suitable method for large-scale processing

Dioxin degradation is considered essential for the environmentally sound management of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA). Among the many degradation techniques, thermal treatment has shown good prospects owing to its high efficiency and wide range of applications. Thermal treatment is divided into high-temperature thermal, microwave thermal, hydrothermal, and low-temperature thermal treatments. High-temperature sintering and melting not only have dioxin degradation rates higher than 95 % but also remove volatile heavy metals, although energy consumption is high. High-temperature industrial co-processing effectively solves the problem of energy consumption, but with a low fly ash (FA) mixture, and the process is limited by location. Microwave thermal treatment and hydrothermal treatment are still in the experimental stage and cannot be used for large-scale processing. The dioxin degradation rate of low-temperature thermal treatment can also be stabilized at higher than 95 %. Compared to other methods, low-temperature thermal treatment is less costly and energy consumption with no restriction on location. This review comprehensively compares the current status of the above-mentioned thermal treatment methods and their ability to dispose of MSWIFA, especially the potential for large-scale processing. Then, the respective characteristics, challenges, and application prospects of different thermal treatment methods were discussed. Finally, based on the goal of low carbon and emission reduction, three possible approaches for improvement were proposed to address the challenges of large-scale processing of low-temperature thermal treatment, namely, adding a catalyst, changing the FA fraction, or supplementing with blockers, providing a reasonable development direction for the degradation of dioxins in MSWIFA.

Characteristics, correlations and health risks of PCDD/Fs and heavy metals in surface soil near municipal solid waste incineration plants in Southwest China

As primary anthropogenic emission source of toxic pollutants such as heavy metals and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration has caused worldwide concern. However, a comprehensive analysis of the pollution characteristics and health risks of PCDD/Fs and heavy metals in soils around MSW incineration plants is lacking. In this study, 17 PCDD/Fs and 11 heavy metals in soil samples collected near MSW incineration plants in Sichuan province were investigated to evaluate their pollution characteristics and potential health risk. Sichuan was selected as the study area because the MSW incineration amount in this province ranks first among all inland provinces in China. The PCDD/Fs concentrations ranged from 0.30 to 7.50 ng I-TEQ/kg, which were significantly below risk screening and intervention thresholds. Regarding heavy metals, principal component analysis suggested that Hg, Pb and Zn were the primary metals emitted from the MSW incineration plants. Cluster analysis of PCDD/Fs and heavy metals showed that of PCDD/Fs homologs and heavy metals (e.g., Hg, Pb, Zn and Cd) were clustered into one group, indicating the coexistence and coaccumulation of heavy metals (especially Hg, Pb, Zn, and Cd) and PCDD/Fs in soil. These heavy metals are thus candidate tracers for PCDD/Fs in soil near MSW incineration plants. A health risk analysis found that the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of PCDD/Fs and heavy metals (except for Ni) in the soil samples were all within acceptable levels. This study provides new insights into correlations and health risks of PCDD/Fs and heavy metals in surface soil near MSW incineration plants. The findings have implications for future studies of environmental and human health risk analysis related to waste incineration.

Influences of elevated O3 and CO2 on Cd distribution in different Festuca arundinacea tissues

It is necessary to reveal the responses of the biomass production and metal accumulation capacity of different plants to the variations of atmospheric conditions and soil metals, with the acceleration of urbanization and industrialization. In the present study, a series of experiments were designed to study the individual and interactive influences of O₃ and CO₂ fumigation on the biomass yield, variation in different leaf types, distribution of cadmium (Cd) in various tissues, and phytoremediation efficiency of Festuca arundinacea using open top chambers. The results found that an elevated O₃ content of 80 ppb, a potential O₃ content predicted for 2050, decreased the total dry mass of F. arundinacea and increased the proportion of falling leaf tissues of the species significantly. Under the same ambient CO₂ levels, O₃ fumigation increased the Cd concentrations in the roots and the fresh, mature, senescent, and dead leaf tissues by 27.8%, 133.3%, 94.4%, 125.3%, and 48.6%, respectively. An elevated CO₂ content (550 ppm) promoted the biomass yield of F. arundinacea, particularly in the falling leaf tissues. The results of the combined O₃ and CO₂ treatment showed that CO₂ fumigation alleviated the negative effects of O₃ on plant growth and increased the accumulation capacity in different plant tissues. Significantly more Cd was accumulated in senescent and dead leaves under the synergistic action of CO₂ and O₃, suggesting that the phytoremediation effect on F. arundinacea using the falling leaves harvesting method could be improved under the future atmospheric environment of high CO₂ and O₃ levels.

Impacts of root pruning intensity and direction on the phytoremediation of moderately Cd-polluted soil by Celosia argentea

Root pruning can impact the physiological functions of various plants, which influence phytoremediation. A series of root pruning treatments with different combinations of direction (two-side pruning and four-side pruning) and intensity (10, 25, and 33% pruning) were performed on Celosia argentea L. All two-side pruning treatments, regardless of intensity, decreased the dry biomass of the C. argentea roots at the end of the experiment relative to that of the control. However, the two-side-10% and two-side-25% pruning treatments stimulated the growth rate of the plant leaves significantly by 58.6 and 41.4%, respectively, relative to that of the control, and even offset the weight loss of the plant roots. Contrastingly, the two-side-33% pruning treatment reduced the biomass yield of leaves by 24.1%. For the four-side pruning treatments, the low intensity increased the dry weight of both the plant roots and leaves, while both decreased under high-intensity root pruning. The dry weight, Cd content, pigment level, and photosynthetic efficiency in the four-side-10% treatment were higher than those in the other treatments during the experiment. This study indicates that root pruning with a suitable combination of direction and intensity can positively influence the Cd removal ability of C. argentea.

Using Polychlorinated Naphthalene Concentrations in the Soil from a Southeast China E-Waste Recycling Area in a Novel Screening-Level Multipathway Human Cancer Risk Assessment

Polychlorinated naphthalene (PCN) concentrations in the soil at an e-waste recycling area in Guiyu, China, were measured and the associated human cancer risk due to e-waste-related exposures was investigated. We quantified PCNs in the agricultural soil and used these concentrations with predictive equations to calculate theoretical concentrations in outdoor air. We then calculated theoretical concentrations in indoor air using an attenuation factor and in the local diet using previously published models for contaminant uptake in plants and fruits. Potential human cancer risks of PCNs were assessed for multiple exposure pathways, including soil ingestion, inhalation, dermal contact, and dietary ingestion. Our calculations indicated that local residents had a high cancer risk from exposure to PCNs and that the diet was the primary pathway of PCN exposure, followed by dermal contact as the secondary pathway. We next repeated the risk assessment using concentrations for other carcinogenic contaminants reported in the literature at the same site. We found that polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and PCNs caused the highest potential cancer risks to the residents, followed by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The relative importance of different exposure pathways depended on the physicochemical properties of specific chemicals.

Qualitative and quantitative changes in traffic and waste incineration PCDD/Fs in urban air and soils under different seasonal conditions (Metropolitan Area of Barcelona)

A sampling and analysis scheme was implemented to discriminate between inputs of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) at low concentrations in urban areas. Ambient air and soils were sampled and analyzed in five stations in the Metropolitan area of Barcelona (2018-2019); one located in a reference urban traffic site and four in the area of influence of an integrated waste management facility (IWMF) that included a solid waste incinerator. Seasonality was the main factor determining the PCDD/F composition, and involved lower values in the warmer months. This seasonal effect was related to enhanced photooxidation of PCDDs compared to PCDFs and faster depletion of the less chlorinated congeners due to volatility at higher ambient temperature; consistent with the compounds' octanol-air partition coefficients. The ratio 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorobenzofuran/1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorobenzofuran allowed, for the first time, identifying cases of preferential contributions of IWMF and traffic inputs, i.e. values of 0.06 and 0.32, respectively. Combination of this ratio with the airborne PCDD/F levels illustrated that the quantitative PCDD/F levels were not a useful criterion for elucidation between IWMF and traffic inputs. PCDD/Fs levels in soils ranged between 9.0 and 22 pg WHO-TEQ/g in the two sites closest to the IWMF, while the other sites, including the traffic site, showed values between 0.8 and 1.9 pg WHO-TEQ/g. The levels in the former group were higher than those observed in other urban areas and above 5 pg WHO-TEQ/g, which is a limit reference value in several European countries. The C₇ and C₈ observed congener distributions in all soils examined were different from those in the air samples and similar to those reported in sewage sludge from waste water treatment plants, not showing influences from IWMF or traffic PCDD/F inputs.

Multiple classes of chemical contaminants in soil from an e-waste disposal site in China: Occurrence and spatial distribution

E-waste recycling is well known for releasing halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) and heavy metals. This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of traditional and novel classes of contaminants, including chlorinated, brominated, and mixed halogenated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs, PBDD/Fs, PXDD/Fs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs), in soil from an e-waste disposal site in Hangzhou. PBDEs were the most abundant, at 343-69306 ng kg^-1, followed by PHCZs (896-41,362 ng kg^-1), PCDD/Fs (349-19,396 ng kg^-1), PCBs (51.3-1834 ng kg^-1), PBDD/Fs (2.99-524 ng kg^-1) and PXDD/Fs (0.104-21.2 ng kg^-1). The detected target compound concentrations were generally lower than those reported in the literature for informal e-waste sites. Nevertheless, they can serve as a basis of information for evaluation and subsequent control. The toxic equivalent (TEQ) contributions from these contaminants (except PBDEs) decreased as follows: PCDD/Fs > PXDD/Fs > PHCZs > PCBs > PBDD/Fs. ΣDioxins (PCDD/Fs + PBDD/Fs + PXDD/Fs) accounted for 47.7%-97.2% of the total TEQs in the soil. OCDD, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpBDF and OBDF were the dominant congeners, mainly derived from combustion and transport because of their low saturated vapor pressure. PXDFs were more abundant than PXDDs, and homologue profiles suggested a similar formation mechanism for PXDFs and PBDFs involving successive Br-to-Cl exchange. PHCZs were reported in soil from an e-waste disposal area for the first time, and their concentrations were several orders of magnitude higher than those of the other contaminants. Although the risk of human exposure in this study was estimated to be lower than the values recommended by the WHO (1-4 pg TEQ/kg bw/day), health implications still exist, and further investigations are necessary.

Environmental and health impacts due to e-waste disposal in China - A review

E-waste is discarded and shipped mostly to developing countries located in Asian continent for disposal from other developed countries. Especially 70% of the world's e-waste ends up in Guiyu, a small town located in Guangdong Province of China. As little as 25% is recycled in formal recycling centers with adequate protection for workers and the other e-waste arrived in those areas is not handled in organized manner. As per reports only roughly 12.5% of e-waste is actually recycled, and the recycling efforts in those regions are primitive and result in toxic substances being leached into the surrounding ecosystems. In addition to persistent organic pollutants, there are many heavy metals found in the ground and river sediments in Guiyu, exceeding the threshold set to protect human health. Those areas are no longer suitable for growing food, and water is unsafe for drinking, due to the amount of toxins leached into the groundwater and land. Hazardous threats to environment and human health due to hazardous substances of e-waste all around China, as well as the current e-waste management were documented in this review. The article concludes with controlled contamination sources, and eco-friendly and efficient remediation technologies to solve e-waste problem in China.

Exposure to multiple heavy metals associate with aberrant immune homeostasis and inflammatory activation in preschool children

Heavy metals generate adverse health effects by interfering with immune homeostasis and promoting inflammation in individuals. Our objective was to explore the induction of immune and inflammatory responses by multiple heavy metals in children living in the e-waste contaminated area. A total of 147 preschool children were recruited, including 73 children from Guiyu, a typical e-waste recycling area, and 74 from a reference group. Blood levels of heavy metals, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As), were detected using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Immune cell counts (neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes) were determined by an automatic blood cell analyzer, pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1RA, IL-4, IL-10, IL-13) were analyzed by a Luminex 200 multiplex immunoassay instrument. Multiple correspondences and linear regression analyses were applied to investigate the relationships between heavy metal exposure and relevant parameters. Results shows Guiyu children had higher levels of Pb, Cd, Hg, As, IL-1β and IL-6, but decreased lymphocyte, IL-1RA and IL-13. Neutrophil count was positively correlated with Pb, Cd and Hg exposure. Anti-inflammatory IL-1RA concentration was negatively related with Pb, Cd, Hg and As, while pro-inflammatory IL-1β and IL-6 were positively correlated with Pb. Guiyu children may have dysregulated immune response and high inflammation risk. Exposure to Pb, Cd, Hg and As could be harmful for immune response and inflammatory regulation. Our finding of decreased IL-RA production in children exposed to Pb, Cd, Hg, and As is novel and could be an opportunity for future research.

The influence of light combination on the physicochemical characteristics and enzymatic activity of soil with multi-metal pollution in phytoremediation

Light irradiation with suitable quality and intensity could influence the success of phytoremediation by improving the biomass yield of plants. However, mechanisms involved in this influence on the contaminant accumulation and translocation ability of plants have rarely been studied. Five light combinations with different red (R) and blue (B) ratios (0, 10, 50, 75 and 100 % blue) at the same intensity (220 μmol m^-2 s^-1) were used to assist phytoremediation using Noccaea caerulescens, and the change in physicochemical characteristics and enzymatic activities of soils after phytoremediation were evaluated. Compared with the control, the light combinations and monochromic blue light significantly increased the activities of soil ureases, invertases, and phosphatases, whereas monochromic red light strongly inhibited the activities of these enzymes, because different light irradiations altered the formation and excretion of carbohydrates from plants for soil microorganism consumption. Plants under B₅₀R₅₀ treatment accumulated the highest concentrations of metals, but their chlorophyll concentrations and lipid peroxidation were similar to those other species with lower metal concentrations. Hence, light with a proper blue/red ratio can simultaneously improve the physicochemical characteristics and enzymatic activities of soils, increase the metal uptake capacity and oxidation resistance of plants, and reduce the leaching risk during phytoremediation processes.

Bacterial communities on soil microplastic at Guiyu, an E-Waste dismantling zone of China

Recent studies of microplastic have focused on aquatic environment, but its impacts on soil ecosystems were poorly understood, particularly on bacterial communities. In this study, the bacterial taxon and functional composition of soil microplastic-attached communities at Guiyu, a notorious e-waste dismantling area in Guangdong Province, China, were investigated by means of high-throughput sequencing. The results revealed that fundamental difference in bacterial communities existed among microplastics selected from three plots with different dismantling methods and their surroundings, suggesting that microplastic surface created a new ecological niche in soil environment, and the bacteria adapted well to the surface-related lifestyle. The formation of microplastic-attached bacteria depended not only on various dismantled plastic materials, but also on disassembly methods that caused different soil physicochemical characters which might also influence the bacterial communities. As the hydrocarbon degraders, the family Hyphomonadaceae were also found on soil microplastic, further confirming that microorganisms played a role in biodegrading microplastic in e-waste zone. The analysis of functional profiles speculated that microplastic-attached bacteria had the potential to degrade pollutants. This study provides a new perspective for exploring microplastic-associated bacteria and increasing our understanding of microplastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems.

Recovery of metals from waste printed circuit boards by selective leaching combined with cyclone electrowinning process

This paper provides a benign process that realized the metals separation and recovery from wPCBs in an efficient and low cost way. The chemical active order and potential-pH diagram of the metals enlightened us to apply stepwise leaching to selective separation of the metals from the wPCBs. The results indicated that the selective separation of Fe, Al, Zn; Sn and Cu can be achieved by the dilute sulfuric acid leaching, displacement leaching using copper sulphate and sulfuric acid leaching with air-oxidization, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, the leaching efficiency of Fe, Al, Zn, Sn and Cu were 92.59%, 90.51%, 89.73%, 1.44% and 0.82%, respectively, in the dilute sulfuric acid leaching. In the displacement leaching, the displacement efficiency of Sn was as high as 95.20%, with little Cu leached. The data of sulfuric acid leaching with air-oxidization experiments shows that the leaching efficiency of Cu reached 95.72%. In order to recover the Sn and Cu in the solutions, the hydrolysis precipitation and cyclone electrowinning were introduced. With these techniques, 92.75% Sn was precipitated and the smooth cathode copper (purity 99.98%) was obtained with the current efficiency was 94.96%. Moreover, the analysis of the mass distribution about the process demonstrated that the H⁺ and Cu²⁺ were consumed, but also produced in different procedure, that means the process is a simple and eco-friendly technology, not only due to its high recovery efficiency, but also high reagents recyclable.

A review of levels and profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in different environmental media from China

This review provides a summary of the levels and profiles of PCDD/Fs throughout China, as reported in peer reviewed literatures since 1997. The literature shows that PCDD/Fs are widespread in various environmental media including air, water, sediment, and soil. PCDD/Fs concentrations in air were relatively low in most regions, with only a few areas considered polluted. Many studies reported seasonal trends, with higher and lower concentrations in winter and summer, respectively. We analyzed the factors affecting the concentrations of dioxins in air and summarized the causes of seasonal changes. As hydrophobic organic compounds, PCDD/Fs readily accumulate in sediments. The distribution of dioxins in sediment in Bohai Sea area was mainly introduced and the factors affecting concentrations of dioxins were studied. The levels of dioxins in soil in different regions varied greatly, with higher levels in areas close to pollution sources. We examined the dioxins concentrations in soil in places where the levels were very low (including the Tibet Plateau and other remote areas), contaminated areas, and other areas. Apart from the contaminated areas, the dioxins concentrations in soil were low. The results of the relatively low number of studies that have investigated PCDD/Fs in water have reported no obvious pollution in some waters, apart from Dongting Lake. PCDD/Fs levels across China are similar to those worldwide. Point sources, mainly related to local geographic, economic, and historical factors, were the most common source of contamination. E-waste dismantling and chemical production has the greatest impact on PCDD/Fs in different media.

The health concern of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a notorious e-waste recycling site

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) remain a relatively high level in e-waste recycling regions 3 decades after ban on use. Illegal recycling activities cunningly moved under the environmental law enforcement. Here, we analyzed PCBs in soils and plants from Guiyu, China (one of the world's largest recycling areas) to understand the relationship between PCBs pollution and the transition of recycling activities (locations and techniques). High concentrations of PCBs were found in soil and plant samples from emerging recycling sites, up to 234 ng g^-1 and 236 ng g^-1 (dry weight), respectively. The recycling activities, specifically the open burning process, would obviously aggravate the PCB pollution levels in its environment. The calculated values of estimated daily intake and hazard ratios of PCBs in dietary routes showed that health risks should be taken seriously.

Effects of elevated CO2 on the phytoremediation efficiency of Noccaea caerulescens

Concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide have been continuously increasing, and more investigations are needed in regard to the responses of various plants to the corresponding climatic conditions. In particular, potential variations in phytoremediation efficiency induced by global warming have rarely been investigated. Objective of this research was to evaluate the changes in phytoremediation efficiency of Noccaea caerulescens exposed to different concentrations of CO₂. The concentrations of CO₂ in the elevated CO₂ treatments were adjusted to 550 ± 50 ppm to match the level of atmospheric CO₂ predicted in 2050-2070. Compared to ambient controls (400 ppm), biomass yields and metal concentrations of N. caerulescens increased under elevated CO₂ conditions, thus indicating that the phytoremediation efficiency of the species could increase in higher CO₂ environment. In addition, water soluble and exchangeable Pb and Cu concentrations in soils decreased under elevated CO₂ conditions, which reduced the leaching risks of the metals. The concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) of N. caerulescens decreased to different degrees with the increased CO₂ concentrations. The overall findings suggested that elevations in CO₂ can reduce the oxidative damage caused by metals in this species. The phytoremediation efficiency of N. caerulescens grown in multiple metal-enriched soils could be enhanced with global warming.

Spatial and temporal variation, source profile of PCDD/Fs in the atmosphere of a municipal waste incinerator in China

The mass concentrations, toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) concentrations and congener profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the stack flue gas and ambient air of municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) were monitored in this study to evaluate the levels, emission characteristics, seasonal variation and emission sources of PCDD/Fs. Thirty-one ambient air samples were collected from four sites around MSWI during 2016-2017, and twelve stack flue gas samples were collected from one MSWI. Results showed that the PCDD/Fs concentrations of the stack flue gas ranged from 0.0077 to 0.021 ng I-TEQ/Nm³, with an average value of 0.016 ng I-TEQ/Nm³. The ambient air samples collected in 2016 and 2017 ranged from 0.017 to 0.27, and 0.035-0.27 pg I-TEQ/Nm³, with an average value of 0.078 and 0.10 pg I-TEQ/Nm³, respectively. The 2, 3, 4, 7, 8-PCDF always contributes most to toxicity both in stack flue gas and ambient air samples. PCDD/Fs in the ambient air of the study area showed significant seasonal differences, and the total concentration of PCDD/Fs was highest in winter, which was about 3.5-7.5 times that of summer. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were used to determine the correlation between MSWI emissions and PCDD/Fs in ambient air. It is worth mentioning that MSWI is not the main source of PCDD/Fs in ambient air.

Characteristics of PCDD/Fs and metals in surface soil around an iron and steel plant in North China Plain

In this study, the level of 18 species of metals and 17 species of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were monitored in surface soil samples around an iron and steel plant in the North China Plain. The concentration of PCDD/Fs and metals in the soil ranged from 0.16 to 4.5 ng I-TEQ/kg and 1.2 to 24,182.2 mg/kg, respectively. Furthermore, the prevailing winds were confirmed to influence the spatial distribution of PCDD/Fs and metals concentrations. The highest concentration of PCDD/Fs was located in downwind soil sample 4 (S4), which showed more than 50% of PCDFs in the total PCDD/Fs, and high levels of lower chlorinated PCDFs. Moreover, the highest Cd and Zn concentrations of 18.1 and 2647.8 mg/kg, respectively, were observed in soil collected from S4, which were significantly above the government guidelines for metals in farmland soil. Our results show that a group of metals (Mg, Al, K, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, Cd, Sb and Pb) was well correlated with all PCDD/Fs except three (OCDD, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD and 1,2,3,7,8,9-HxCDD), which likely originated from iron and steel processes. Additionally, Pb, Zn, Cd and all polychlorinated dibenzofurans showed a good correlation and grouped in one cluster, suggesting anthropogenic sources from sintering process. Therefore, the metallic characteristics in soil, especially the Pb, Zn and Cd tracers, implied evidence of the accumulation of PCDD/Fs from sinter plants.

Alteration of the number and percentage of innate immune cells in preschool children from an e-waste recycling area

Heavy metal lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are widespread environmental contaminants and exert detrimental effects on the immune system. We evaluated the association between Pb/Cd exposures and innate immune cells in children from an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling area. A total number of 294 preschool children were recruited, including 153 children from Guiyu (e-waste exposed group), and 141 from Haojiang (reference group). Pb and Cd levels in peripheral blood were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer, NK cell percentages were detected by flow cytometer, and other innate immune cells including monocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils and basophils were immediately measured by automated hematology analyzer. Results showed children in Guiyu had significantly higher Pb and Cd levels than in reference group. Absolute counts of monocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils and basophils, as well as percentages of eosinophils and neutrophils were significantly higher in the Guiyu group. In contrast, NK cell percentages were significantly lower in Guiyu group. Pb elicited significant escalation in counts of monocytes, eosinophils and basophils, as well as percentages of monocytes, but decline in percentages of neutrophils in different quintiles with respect to the first quintile of Pb concentrations. Cd induced significant increase in counts and percentages of neutrophils in the highest quintile compared with the first quintile of Cd concentrations. We concluded alteration of the number and percentage of innate immune cells are linked to higher levels of Pb and Cd, which indicates Pb and Cd exposures might affect the innate and adaptive immune response in Guiyu children.

Occurrence, composition, source, and regional distribution of halogenated flame retardants and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxin/dibenzofuran in the soils of Guiyu, China

Guiyu, China, is well-known for the crude disposal of electronic waste (EW) and severe persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Therefore, in this study, the occurrence, composition, and source of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl (BB153), some novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), Dechlorane Plus (DP) and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) in farmland soils covering Guiyu were studied. In EW disposal area soils, PBDEs were the most abundant FRs, with concentrations of 13-1014 ng g^-1. The primary PBDE sources were technical Penta- and Deca-BDE mixtures in northern and southern Guiyu, respectively. The levels of BB153 were relatively low, possibly because it has been banned in the 1970s. The concentrations of hexabromobenzene (HBB) were 0.048-3.3 ng g^-1, while pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) was almost not detected in the soils. Two alternatives to commercial PBDEs, decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), were the primary NBFRs, with concentrations of 1.8-153 ng g^-1 and 0.43-15 ng g^-1, respectively. DP was another primary FR, with concentrations of 0.57-146 ng g^-1. Moreover, syn-DP and anti-DP isomers were not stereoselectively decomposed during the EW disposal process and were therefore present in their original fractions in the soils. The levels of PBDD/Fs in EW disposal area soils were 2.5-17 pg TEQ g^-1. 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpBDF and OBDF were the dominant congeners, mainly derived from processing, pyrolysis and combustion of BFRs. The regional distribution of pollutants was shown to be related to the disposal manner of EW, with their open thermal disposal tending to release more highly brominated compounds such as BDE209, DBDPE, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpBDF. Additionally, some riverbank sites were heavily polluted because of nearby point sources, downwind Simapu (SMP) town without EW disposal activity was also contaminated by these pollutants.

PCDD/Fs distribution characteristics and health risk assessment in fly ash discharged from MSWIs in China

This study provided distribution and health risk information of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in fly ash from 4 municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) in four seasons from four sites, including Zhengzhou City in Henan Province, Chuzhou City in Anhui Province, Jilin City in Jilin Province and Zibo City in Shandong Province. The toxic equivalent concentration (I-TEQ) values of PCDD/Fs ranged from 0.0707 to 0.7742ng I-TEQ/g, and no identical sequence occurred during four seasons in different sampling sites. The stabilization process might efficiently reduce the content and toxicology of PCDD/Fs in fly ash. The value of PCDD/PCDF in fly ash ranged from 0.145 to 0.787 after solidification. The characteristic index (DCI) of 2,3,4,7,8-P₅CDF was 0.803 with 6.6% under 95% probability for fly ash samples discharged from MSWIs. The 95th percentile carcinogenic risks (CRs) for onsite workers were lower than the threshold value (10^-5), suggesting that the cancer risk levels of PCDD/Fs in fly ash for onsite workers were acceptable. The 95th percentile non-carcinogenic risks (non-CRs) for onsite workers were lower than 1, suggesting no obvious non-carcinogenic effect was developed for onsite workers. This paper provide an overview information on the distribution of PCDD/Fs in fly ash during four seasons, and it could be used as an important fingerprint to distinguish the fly ash sources. Thus, the research could provide basic information for fly ash management in environment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations, compositions, sources, and associated carcinogenic risks to humans in farmland soils and riverine sediments from Guiyu, China

The concentrations of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in 23 farmland soil samples and 10 riverine sediment samples from Guiyu, China, and the carcinogenic risks associated with PAHs in the samples were evaluated. Guiyu is the largest electronic waste (EW) dismantling area globally, and has been well known for the primitive and crude manner in which EWs are disposed, such as by open burning and roasting. The total PAH concentrations were 56-567 ng/g in the soils and 181-3034 ng/g in the sediments. The Shanglian and Huamei districts were found to be more contaminated with PAHs than the north of Guiyu. The soils were relatively weakly contaminated but the sediments were more contaminated, and sediments in some river sections might cause carcinogenic risks to the groundwater system. The PAHs in the soils were derived from combustion sources, but the PAHs in the sediments were derived from both combustion and petroleum sources.

Mono- to Octachlorinated Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-dioxin and Dibenzofuran Emissions from Sintering Plants Synergistically Controlled by the Desulfurization Process

The influence of desulfurization systems in sintering plants on polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) concentrations, profiles, and emission factors was studied. Mono- to tri-CDD/Fs and tetra- to octa-CDD/F concentrations were 4.4 ± 2.3 and 10.5 ± 8.3 ng m(-3), respectively, at the inlets and 0.87 ± 0.48 and 0.47 ± 0.22 ng m(-3), respectively, after desulfurization. The toxic equivalents (TEQs) were 0.95 ± 0.093 and 0.51 ± 0.040 ng of I-TEQ m(-3) at the inlets and after desulfurization, respectively. The congener profiles and homologue distributions were dominated by 2-MoCDF and MoCDF, respectively. The PCDD/F removal efficiencies achieved by desulfurization increased as the chlorination level increased. The PCDD/Fs became adsorbed to gypsum. Annual mono- to tri-CDD/Fs PCDD/F and TEQ (tetra- to octa-CDD/F) emission factors for flue gas and gypsum between 2003 and 2012 were determined. The total amounts of mono- to tri-CDD/Fs emitted in flue gas and gypsum between 2003 and 2012 were 10.7 and 10.2 kg, respectively. The total TEQs emitted in flue gas and gypsum between 2003 and 2012 were estimated to be 15486 and 1878 g of I-TEQ, respectively. PCDD/Fs adsorbed to gypsum are not effectively eliminated. The PCDD/F concentrations increased as the fly ash surface area increased moving through the electrostatic precipitator stages.

Levels and ecological risk assessment of metals in soils from a typical e-waste recycling region in southeast China

Due to the high threat to human health and the ecosystem from metals, the levels and distribution of As, Hg, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Mn, V, Sn, Sb, Li and Be in various layers of soil from an e-waste recycling area in Guiyu, China were investigated. The extent of pollution from the metals in soil was assessed using enrichment factors (EFs) and the Nemerow pollution index (P N ). To determine the metals' integrated potential ecological risks, the potential ecological risk index (RI) was chosen. The concentrations of Hg, Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb, Sn and Sb were mainly enriched in the topsoil. EF values (2-5) of the elements Hg, Co, Ni, Zn, Sn, Li and Be revealed their moderate enrichment status in the topsoil, derived from e-waste recycling activities. P N presented a decreasing trend in different layers in the order topsoil (0-20 cm) > deep soil (100-150 cm) > middle soil (50-100 cm) > shallow soil (20-50 cm). With higher potential ecological risk factor (E(i)), Hg and Cd are the main contributors to the potential ecological risk. With respect to the RI, all the values in soil from the study area exceeded 300, especially for the soil at sites S2, S4, S5, S7 and S8, where RI was greater than 600. Therefore, immediate remediation of the contaminated soil is necessary to prevent the release of metals and potential ecological harm.

Combination of a fast cleanup procedure and a DR-CALUX® bioassay for dioxin surveillance in Taiwanese soils

Our goal was to determine dioxin levels in 800 soil samples collected from Taiwan. An in vitro DR-CALUX^® assay was carried out with the help of an automated Soxhlet system and fast cleanup column. The mean dioxin level of 800 soil samples was 36.0 pg-bioanalytical equivalents (BEQs)/g dry weight (d.w.). Soil dioxin-BEQs were higher in northern Taiwan (61.8 pg-BEQ/g d.w.) than in central, southern, and eastern Taiwan (22.2, 24.9, and 7.80 pg-BEQ/g d.w., respectively). Analysis of multiple linear regression models identified four major predictors of dioxin-BEQs including soil sampling location (β = 0.097, p < 0.001), land use (β = 0.065, p < 0.001), soil brightness (β = 0.170, p < 0.001), and soil moisture (β = 0.051, p = 0.020), with adjusted R² = 0.947 (p < 0.001) (n = 662). An univariate logistic regression analysis with the cut-off point of 33.4 pg-BEQ/g d.w. showed significant odds ratios (ORs) for soil sampling location (OR = 2.43, p < 0.001), land use (OR = 1.47, p < 0.001), and soil brightness (OR = 2.83, p = 0.009). In conclusion, four variables, including soil sampling location, land use, soil brightness, and soil moisture, may be related to soil-dioxin contamination. Soil samples collected in northern Taiwan, and especially in Bade City, soils near industrial areas, and soils with darker color may contain higher dioxin-BEQ levels.
