Association between arsenic and different-sized dissolved organic matter in the groundwater of black-foot disease area, Taiwan

Exploring the potential: Can arsenic (As) resistant silicate-solubilizing bacteria manage the dual effects of silicon on As accumulation in rice?

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation in regions marked by elevated arsenic (As) concentrations poses significant health concerns due to As uptake by the plant and its subsequent entry into the human food chain. With rice serving as a staple crop for a substantial share of the global population, addressing this issue is critical for food security. In flooded paddy soils, where As availability is pronounced, innovative strategies to reduce As uptake and enhance agricultural sustainability are mandatory. Silicon (Si) and Si nanoparticles have emerged as potential candidates to mitigate As accumulation in rice. However, their effects on As uptake exhibit complexity, influenced by initial Si levels in the soil and the amount of Si introduced through fertilization. While low Si additions may inadvertently increase As uptake, higher Si concentrations may alleviate As uptake and toxicity. The interplay among existing Si and As availability, Si supplementation, and soil biogeochemistry collectively shapes the outcome. Adding water-soluble Si fertilizers (e.g., Na2SiO3 and K2SiO3) has demonstrated efficacy in mitigating As toxicity stress in rice. Nonetheless, the expense associated with these fertilizers underscores the necessity for low cost innovative solutions. Silicate-solubilizing bacteria (SSB) resilient to As hold promise by enhancing Si availability by accelerating mineral dissolution within the rhizosphere, thereby regulating the Si biogeochemical cycle in paddy soils. Promoting SSB could make cost-effective Si sources more soluble and, consequently, managing the intricate interplay of Si's dual effects on As accumulation in rice. This review paper offers a comprehensive exploration of Si's nuanced role in modulating As uptake by rice, emphasizing the potential synergy between As-resistant SSB and Si availability enhancement. By shedding light on this interplay, we aspire to shed light on an innovative attempt for reducing As accumulation in rice while advancing agricultural sustainability.

Arsenic-dissolved organic matter complexation in water soluble extracts from lignite

Arsenic in groundwater is a global threat to public health. Recently, As mobility has been tied to the concentration and chemical characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) through formation of As-DOM complexes. To date, there has been a wide range of DOM types studied to understand As-DOM interactions, but most of these have focused on surface water derived materials and not groundwater DOM. We address this gap in knowledge by simulating groundwater DOM using water extractable organic matter (WEOM) from two lignite deposits and treating the extracts with increasing concentrations of As. As-DOM complexes were measured using size-exclusion chromatography coupled to multiple detectors including an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICPMS) for As detection as well as fluorescence and variable wave detectors for organic matter detection. First, we found two different size fractions of As-DOM, one of ∼1 kDa and another of ∼15 kDa, depending on the DOM types. The smaller As-DOM complex (∼1 kDa) was approximately 10 times more abundant than the larger complex (∼15 kDa). Second, we found that the lignite derived DOMs showed higher conditional distribution coefficients than did the surface water reference material (Suwanee River Natural Organic Matter, SRNOM). Finally, the data showed good fit (R2 > 0.92) to one-site ligand binding models, and the lignite derived DOMs showed higher maximum sorbate concentrations (Bmax) compared to SRNOM. Together, this study shows that As-DOM complexation is an important control on As speciation, even in groundwater systems.

Linking DOM characteristics to microbial community: The potential role of DOM mineralization for arsenic release in shallow groundwater

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) play critical roles in arsenic (As) biotransformation in groundwater, but its compositional characteristics and interactions with indigenous microbial communities remain unclear. In this study, DOM signatures coupled with taxonomy and functions of microbial community were characterized in As-enriched groundwater by excitation-emission matrix, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and metagenomic sequencing. Results showed that As concentrations were significantly positively correlated with DOM humification (r = 0.707, p < 0.01) and the most dominant humic acid-like DOM components (r = 0.789, p < 0.01). Molecular characterization further demonstrated high DOM oxidation degree, with the prevalence of unsaturated oxygen-low aromatics, nitrogen (N₁/N₂)-containing compounds and unique CHO molecules in high As groundwater. These DOM properties were consistent with microbial composition and functional potentials. Both taxonomy and binning analyses demonstrated the dominance of Pseudomonas stutzeri, Microbacterium and Sphingobium xenophagum in As-enriched groundwater which possessed abundant As-reducing gene, with organic carbon degrading genes capable of labile to recalcitrant compounds degradation and high potentials of organic nitrogen mineralization to generate ammonium. Besides, most assembled bins in high As groundwater presented strong fermentation potentials which could facilitate carbon utilization by heterotrophic microbes. This study provides better insight into the potential role of DOM mineralization for As release in groundwater system.

Temperature effects on microbial dissolved organic matter metabolisms: Linking size fractions, fluorescent compositions, and functional groups

This study elucidated the compositional and structural variations of size fractions of microbially-induced dissolved organic matter (DOM) caused by short-term temperature changes (5 to 35 °C), taking riverine DOM as an example. A simple and efficient method combining fractionation-[parallel factor analysis and two-dimensional Fourier-transform infrared correlation spectroscopy (PARAFAC-2D FTIR COS)]-correlation was introduced to link fluorescent DOM components and their structures in terms of surface functional groups. Results indicated that the higher temperature stimulated the decomposition of aromatics (sizes decreased from 10 kDa-0.22 μm to <10 kDa) and the transformation of proteins to humics (with sizes <0.22 μm); while both the higher and lower temperatures inhibited the utilization of larger-sized DOM (>0.22 μm, especially the non-fluorescence part) and synthesis of larger-sized microbial-derived proteins and humics (>0.22 μm), which may result in more smaller-sized (<10 kDa) and refractory aromatics transported from rivers to oceans in the warming future. However, the structure-determined DOM behaviors could be less affected by temperature since the fluorescent proteins and humics revealed similar functional group compositions, such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl/aldehyde, carboxylic anhydride, and carboxamide groups. These findings have strong implications for DOM biogeochemistry in future temperature-shock scenarios. The proposed method will support in-depth analyses of structure-regulated processes from a mechanistic perspective.

Geochemical impact of dissolved organic matter on antimony mobilization in shallow groundwater of the Xikuangshan antimony mine, Hunan Province, China

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widely used in aquatic systems to control the environmental fate of As. However, similar to the behavior of As, Sb mobilization driven by DOM is poorly understood. A total of 25 samples were collected from shallow groundwater in the Xikuangshan mine to compare the spectroscopic characteristics and chemical properties of DOM between high- and low-Sb groundwater and to determine the roles of DOM in Sb mobility. The concentrations of Sb and DOM varied from 0.003 to 18.402 mg/L (mean: 3.407 mg/L) and 0.38 to 9.90 mg/L (mean: 2.49 mg/L), respectively. The DOM of the D₃x⁴ water was primarily dominated by terrestrial and microbial humic-like and fulvic acid substances, with a relatively small contribution of tryptophan-like components. Complexing agents, competitive adsorption, and photopromoted oxidation under sunlight were considered as the formation mechanisms for DOM-controlled Sb(V)-dominated Sb species in D₃x⁴ water. The weakly alkaline and oxidizing conditions, and the presence of Fe hydroxides facilitated the promotion of Sb(V) concentration. The findings of this study further enhance our understanding of the Sb migration mechanism in oxic groundwater.

Long-term ambient hydrocarbon exposure and incidence of urinary bladder cancer

Particulate matter and volatile organic compounds, including total hydrocarbons (THCs), are major ambient air pollutants. Primary nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) originate from vehicle emissions. The association between air pollution and urinary bladder cancer (UBC) is debatable. We investigated whether long-term exposure to ambient hydrocarbons increases UBC risk among people aged ≥ 20 years in Taiwan. Linkage dataset research with longitudinal design was conducted among 589,135 initially cancer-free individuals during 2000-2013; 12 airborne pollutants were identified. Several Cox models considering potential confounders were employed. The study outcomes were invasive or in situ UBC incidence over time. The targeted pollutant concentration was divided into three tertiles: T1/T2/T3. The mean age of individuals at risk was 42.5 (SD 15.7), and 50.5% of the individuals were men. The mean daily average over 10 years of airborne THC concentration was 2.25 ppm (SD 0.13), and NMHC was 0.29 ppm (SD 0.09). Both pollutants show long-term monotonic downward trend over time using the Mann-Kendall test. There was a dose-dependent increase in UBC at follow-up. UBC incidence per 100,000 enrollees according to T1/T2/T3 exposure to THC was 60.9, 221.2, and 651.8, respectively; it was 170.0/349.5/426.7 per 100,000 enrollees, corresponding to T1/T2/T3 exposure to NMHC, respectively. Without controlling for confounding air pollutants, the adjusted hazard ratio (adj.HR) was 1.83 (95% CI 1.75-1.91) per 0.13-ppm increase in THC; after controlling for PM_2.5, adj.HR was even higher at 2.09 (95% CI 1.99-2.19). The adj.HR was 1.37 (95% CI 1.32-1.43) per 0.09-ppm increase in ambient NMHC concentration. After controlling for SO₂ and CH₄, the adj.HR was 1.10 (95% CI 1.06-1.15). Sensitivity analyses showed that UBC development risk was not sex-specific or influenced by diabetes status. Long-term exposure to THC and NMHC may be a risk factor for UBC development. Acknowledging pollutant sources can inform risk management strategies.

Arsenic trioxide-induced autophagy affected the antioxidant capacity and apoptosis rate of chicken hepatocytes

Arsenic has recently received widespread attention due to its high toxicological effects on multiple animals; however, the mechanism underlying this toxicity is unclear. We investigated the damaging effects of arsenic trioxide (ATO) on hepatocytes and the effects of regulating autophagy on the hepatocyte damage induced by ATO exposure. First, we investigated the effects of ATO exposure (0, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4, and 4.8 μM) on the biochemical function and autophagy of chicken hepatocytes. The findings showed that as the concentration of ATO increased, the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration increased, more autophagosomes were observed via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the gene and protein expression levels of P62, LC3Ⅱ, and Beclin1 increased. Adding N-acetyl-l-cystine (NAC, 1 mM) attenuated autophagy and the hepatocyte damage induced by ATO. Then, we used rapamycin (Rapa) and 3-methylpurine (3-MA) to regulate the autophagy induced by exposure to 4.8 μM ATO and observed changes in the antioxidant capacity and apoptosis rate of chicken hepatocytes. Induction of autophagy reduced ATO-induced hepatocyte apoptosis but caused no significant effect on oxidative stress in chicken hepatocytes. Inhibition of autophagy exacerbated ATO-induced hepatocyte oxidative stress and apoptosis. These findings demonstrate that autophagy plays an important role in ATO-induced cell damage.

Review on the interactions of arsenic, iron (oxy)(hydr)oxides, and dissolved organic matter in soils, sediments, and groundwater in a ternary system

High concentrations of arsenic (As) in groundwater threaten the environment and public health. Geogenically, groundwater As contamination predominantly occurs via its mobilization from underground As-rich sediments. In an aquatic ecosystem, As is typically driven by several underlying processes, such as redox transitions, microbially driven reduction of iron (Fe) oxide minerals, and release of associated As. Notably, dissolved As mobilized from soils and sediments exhibits high affinity for dissolved organic matter (DOM). Thus, high DOM concentrations can increase As mobility. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the complex interactions and biogeochemical cycling of As, DOM, and Fe oxides. This review collates knowledge regarding the fate of As in multicomponent As-DOM-Fe systems, including ternary complexes involving both Fe and DOM. Additionally, the release mechanisms of As from sediments into groundwater in the presence of both Fe and DOM have been discussed. The mechanisms of As mobilization/sorption at the solid-water interface can be affected by negatively charged DOM competing for sorption sites with As on Fe (oxy)(hydr)oxides and may be further modified by other anionic ubiquitous species such as phosphate, silicic acid, or sulfur. This review emphasizes the need for a comprehensive understanding of the impact of DOM, Fe oxides, and related biogeochemical processes on As mobilization to aquifers. The review identifies important knowledge gaps that may aid in developing applicable practices for preventing the spread of As contamination in aquatic resources and traditional soil management practices.

Distribution and health-ecological risk assessment of heavy metals: an endemic disease case study in southwestern China

This research focuses on the health risks caused by heavy metal (HM) environmental pollution. Soil, water, corn, rice, and patients' hair samples from Daping Village, Yunnan Province, China, were analyzed for seven selected HMs. Geoaccumulation index (I_geo), pollution indexes (PI), and the Nemerow integrated pollution index (PN) were used to evaluate pollution levels. We employed principal component analysis (PCA), correlation analysis (CA), and spatial distribution to identify the source and distribution characteristics of HMs in soil. Health risks of HMs and exposure pathways were accessed by calculating the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI). The I_geo, PI, and PN results show that cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) pollution is severe in soil, while other pollution is relatively little. PCA, CA, and spatial distribution show that HMs may be derived from black shale weathering and enrichment. Residents' drinking water is relatively safe. Arsenic is the element most threatening to local residents (HI = 3.8). Soil (HI = 3.55) ingestion and plant (HI = 1.67) ingestion are the primary exposure pathways to HMs. This unusual disease may be caused by children's relatively low immunity and long-term exposure to As. We must enhance the protection of children and encourage avoiding soil contact as much as possible. Our results highlight the importance of investigating HM pollution from geological sources and blocking potential exposure pathways.

Transport of arsenic loaded by ferric humate colloid in saturated porous media

The transport behavior of arsenic (As(V)) loaded by ferric humate (HA-Fe) colloid, denoted as HA-Fe/As(V), moving in a saturated quartz sand column, was tested in the laboratory under varying pH values, ionic strengths, and HA and Fe(III) content. The time-fractional advection-dispersion equation (fADE) model was then employed to analyze the observed migration of HA-Fe/As(V). Results showed that the stability of the HA-Fe colloid exhibited an upward trend with an increasing pH and HA content. An increasing HA content led to a decrease in the particle size of the HA-Fe colloid. However, the effect of Fe(III) concentration on colloidal particle size exhibited the opposite phenomenon. The ability of the HA-Fe colloid to load As(V) gradually increased with the increase of the Fe(III) concentration. During the co-transport of the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid, transport of As(V) was promoted with increasing pH, increasing HA and Fe(III) content, and decreasing ionic strength in the saturated porous medium. The transport behavior of As(V) can be well fitted by the fADE model. The model analysis revealed that sub-diffusion of As(V) was weakened in the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid with high HA content. Sub-diffusion of As(V) in the low pH colloid was stronger than that of the high-pH colloid, and the molecular diffusion and mechanical dispersion were more weakened in the high-pH colloid than that of the low-pH colloid. When observing varying ionic strengths, As(V) exhibited stronger sub-diffusion in the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid with a higher ionic strength. As for the Fe(III) content, transport of As(V) was mainly affected by sub-diffusion in the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid with a low Fe(III) content. These findings provided direct and necessary insights into the effects of the HA-Fe colloid on the migration of As(V) throughout saturated porous media under different hydrochemical conditions found in natural environments.

Fluorescence Characteristics of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) in Percolation Water and Lateral Seepage Affected by Soil Solution (S-S) in a Lysimeter Test

The composition and structure of dissolved organic matter (DOM) are sensitive indicators that guide the water infiltration process in soil. The DOM chemical composition in seepage affects river water quality and changes soil organic matter (SOM). In this lysimeter test study, fluorescence spectra and optical indices were used to examine the interaction between the percolation water (P-W) and leachate water (L-W) DOMs affected by the soil solution (S-S). The L-W DOM had a higher aromaticity (SUVA₂₅₄), average molecular weight (S_275-295) and terrestrial source (fluorescence index (FI)), but fewer autochthonous sources (biological index (BIX)) than the P-W DOM. Organic carbon standardization (OCS) and protein- (PLF), fulvic- (FLF) and humic-like fluorescence (HLF) intensity showed that L-W DOM increased 44%, 55% and 81%, respectively, compared to the P-W DOM. The linear regression slopes between OCS FLF and PLF were 0.62, 1.74 and 1.79 for P-W, L-W and S-S, respectively. The slopes between OCS HLF and PLF were 0.15, 0.58 and 0.64 for P-W, L-W and S-S, respectively. The P-W DOM was in contact with the soil litter layer, where S-S labile lignin phenolic compounds released and dissolved into the L-W DOM. This increased its aromaticity, and extent of humification.

Association between extracted copper and dissolved organic matter in dairy-manure amended soils

Dairy manure often has elevated concentrations of copper (Cu) that when applied to soil may create toxicity risks to seedlings and soil microbes. Manure application also increases dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil solution. We hypothesize that high rates of dairy manure amendment over several years will cause increased DOM in the soil that complexes Cu, increasing its mobility. To test this hypothesis, this study investigated water soluble Cu concentrations and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soil samples from 3 years of manure-amended soils. Samples were collected at two depths over the first 3 years of a long-term manure-amendment field trial. DOC, Cu, Fe, and P concentrations were measured in water extracts from the samples. Ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) spectra were used to assess the DOC characteristics. After 3 years of manure application, extractable Cu concentration was approximately four times greater in the surface and two times greater in subsurface samples of manure-amended soils as compared to non-amended control soils and traditional mineral fertilizer-amended soils. The extractable Cu concentration was greatest in plots that had the highest manure amendment rates (35 t ha^-1 and 52 t ha^-1, dry weight). The UV/Vis parameters SUVA₂₅₄ and E₂/E₃ correlated with Cu concentration in the extracts (p < 0.05), suggesting that DOC characteristics are important in Cu-binding. The molecular characteristics of the DOC in the subsurface after 3 years of manure amendment were distinct from the DOC in the control plot, suggesting that manure amendment creates mobile DOC that may facilitate Cu mobilization through soil. The 10-fold increase in extractable Cu concentration after only 3 years of manure application indicates that repeated applications of the dairy manure sources used in this study at rates of 35 t/ha or greater may create risks for Cu toxicity and leaching of Cu into ground and surface waters.

Using Fe(III)-coagulant-modified colloidal gas aphrons to remove bio-recalcitrant dissolved organic matter and colorants from cassava distillery wastewater

Efficient removal of bio-recalcitrant dissolved organic matter (DOM) and colorants is essential for discharging or reusing the distillery wastewater. The present work adopted a novel microbubble system - Fe(III)-coagulant-modified colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) in flotation as tertiary treatment of the bio-chemically treated cassava distillery wastewater. Approximately 93% of bio-recalcitrant color and around 79% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were removed at the initial pH of 9.0 and 7.1, individually. The modified CGAs exhibited strong ability of complexation and electrostatic attraction of the polyanions of DOM and colorants. But the 1-10 kDa DOM was found to be resistant to the CGA capture. Compared with directly dosing coagulant, the Fe(III)-coagulant-modified CGAs consumed ∼47% and ∼21% less coagulant to achieve the optimum decoloration efficiency and DOC removal, respectively. In the flotation with Fe(III)-coagulant-modified CGAs, the coagulant-dosing system could be omitted while the coagulant utilization was improved.

Utilization of calcium-based and aluminum-based materials for the treatment of stabilized landfill leachate: a comparative study

This study explored the efficiencies and mechanisms of refractory organic matters removal in the stabilized landfill leachate by adding different reagents. Calcium-based and aluminum-based materials were added into the leachate as comparing experiments. XRD, FTIR, and EEM were adopted to analyze the solid products and leachate. As a result, the in situ synthesized CaAl-LDHs were more beneficial for refractory organic matters removal, especially for benzodiazepines. When CaAl-LDHs were formed, the removal efficiencies of COD, UV254, and TOC were best and achieved 58.48, 81.22, and 71.30%, respectively. For fluorescent substances, humic acid-like and fulvic acid-like compounds were efficiently removed by CaAl-LDHs. In particular, CaAl-LDHs had selective removal effects on fulvic acid-like compounds, which were characteristic of small molecular weight and major carboxyl groups.

Arsenic, chromium, molybdenum, and selenium: Geochemical fractions and potential mobilization in riverine soil profiles originating from Germany and Egypt

The fractionation and potential mobilization of As, Cr, Mo, and Se in four floodplain soil profiles collected along the Nile (Egypt) and Wupper (Germany) Rivers were assessed using the BCR sequential extraction procedure. The concentrations of total and the geochemical fractions (acid soluble (F1), reducible (F2), oxidizable (F3), and residual (F4) fraction) of the elements were determined. The Wupper soils had the highest total concentrations (mg kg^-1) of As (378) and Cr (2,797) while the Nile soils contained the highest total Mo (12) and Se (42). The residual fraction of As, Cr, Mo, and Se was dominant in the Nile soils suggesting the geogenic source of the elements in these soils. The residual fraction of As and Mo and the oxidizable fraction of Cr and Se were dominant in the Wupper soils. Among the non-residual fractions (potential mobile fractions; PMF = ∑F1-F3), the oxidizable fraction was dominant for Cr, Mo, and Se in the Nile soils and for Mo in the Wupper soils, while the reducible fraction was dominant for As in both soils. The PMF of As, Cr, and Se was higher in the Wupper than in the Nile soils which might reflect the anthropogenic sources of these elements in the Wupper soils, while the opposite was the case for the PMF of Mo. The high PMF of Se (87%), Cr (87%), and As (21%) in the Wupper soils suggested that a release of these toxic elements may happen which increase the potential environmental risks in the anthropogenically polluted soils.
