Temporal occurrence and sources of persistent organic pollutants in suspended particulate matter from the most heavily polluted river mouth of Lake Chaohu, China

Spatial distribution, partitioning, and ecological risk assessment of benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, and benzotriazole UV absorbers in the eastern shelf seas of China

Benzotriazoles (BTRs), benzothiazoles (BTHs), and benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BUVs) have attracted increasing attention due to their ubiquity in the environment, toxicity, and potential ecological risks. However, information on their distributions in the ocean is scarce. In this study, BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs were firstly determined in the surface seawater, sea-surface microlayer (SML), suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediments of the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS). The spatial distributions of BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs in the YS and ECS showed offshore decreasing trend in their concentrations, indicating that terrestrial inputs from runoff and rivers had important influences on their distributions. The organic carbon normalized partition coefficients (log Koc) of target contaminants in surface seawater-SPM (3.06-4.16 L/g) and bottom seawater-sediment (2.55-4.82 L/kg) systems were determined. SPM showed greater sorption capacities for most target contaminants than the sediment. The burial capacities of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs from SPM to surface sediments were evaluated using their respective log Kow values and their sedimentary fluxes in the YS and ECS were quantified. BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs were enriched in the SML, with the enrichment extents of the suspended particulate phase being obviously lower than those of the dissolved phase. The ecological risks of BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs were evaluated using the risk quotient (RQ) method, which showed no toxic risk to aquatic organisms throughout the water phases, but high risk in nearshore sediments.

Receptor model-based source tracing and risk assessment of elements in sediment of a transboundary Himalayan River

This study utilized surface sediments from a potentially less polluted transboundary Himalayan River (Brahmaputra: China-India-Bangladesh) to investigate the abundance of 15 geochemically and ecologically significant elements and to predict their sources and ecological consequences. INAA was applied to determine the elemental concentrations. The average abundances (μg.g-1) of Rb (94.20), Cs (4.49), Th (20.31), & U (2.73) were 1.12-2.26 folds elevated than shale. Environmental indices disclosed a pollution status ranging from "uncontaminated to moderately contaminated," with minimal Rb, U, and Th enrichment in the downstream zone. Consensus-based sediment quality guideline (SQG) threshold values suggested that only Cr (60% samples > TEL) may impose rare biological effects. Ecological risk indices suggested "minor to no" possible eco-toxicological risks for the accounted elements (Cr, Co, Mn, Zn, Sb, & As). The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model predicated the predominance of geogenic or crustal contributions (∼72.69%) for Al, K, Na, Ti, Co, Zn, Ba, Cs, As, Rb, Th, & U derived from elemental fractionations, mineral weathering, and bio-geo-chemical mobilization. The relative contributions of anthropogenic sources (∼27.31%; such as the construction of roads, settlement expansion, litter disposal, municipal waste discharge, mining activities, agricultural encroachment, etc.) on elemental distribution were significantly lower. The abundance of Cr and Mn was mainly influenced by anthropogenic sources. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of utilizing geo-environmental guidelines and receptor models in discriminating the natural & anthropogenic origins of metals in the complex riverine sediments of a less anthropogenically affected river.

Effects of suspended particles in the Jinjiang River Estuary on the physiological and biochemical characteristics of Microcystis flos-aquae

The effects of different concentrations (100, 150, 200, 250 mg/L) and different particle sizes (0-75 μm, 75-120 μm, 120-150 μm, 150-500 μm) on the soluble protein content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, chlorophyll a (Chla) content, and photosynthetic parameters of Microcystis flos-aquae were studied, and the mechanism of the effect of suspended particulate matter on the physiology and biochemistry of Microcystis flos-aquae was discussed. The results showed that the soluble protein content of Microcystis flos-aquae did not change noticeably after being stressed by suspended particles of different concentrations/diameters. The SOD activity of Microcystis flos-aquae first increased and then decreased with increasing suspended particulate matter concentrations. The SOD activity of Microcystis flos-aquae reached 28.03 U/mL when the concentration of suspended particulate matter was 100 mg/L. The CAT activity of Microcystis flos-aquae increased with increasing concentrations of suspended particles and reached a maximum value of 12.45 U/mg prot in the 250 mg/L concentration group, showing a certain dose effect. Small particles had a more significant effect on SOD, CAT, and MDA in Microcystis flos-aquae than large particles. The larger the concentration was and the smaller the particle size was, the stronger the attenuation of light and the lower the content of Chla. Both the maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) and the potential photosynthetic activity of PSII (Fv/F₀) of Microcystis flos-aquae increased at first and then decreased under different concentrations/sizes of suspended particles. The relative electron transfer rate gradually returned to a normal level over time. There was no significant difference in the initial slope (α) value between the treatment group and the control group, and the maximum photo synthetic rate (ETRmax) and the semilight saturation (I_k) decreased.

High-throughput sequencing as a tool for monitoring prokaryote communities in a wastewater treatment plant

In this study, the DNA metabarcoding technique was used to explore the prokaryote diversity and community structure in wastewater collected in spring and winter 2020-2021 as well as the efficiency of the treatment in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Ría de Vigo (NW Spain). The samplings included raw wastewater from the inlet stream (M1), the discharge water after the disinfection treatment (M3) and mussels used as bioindicators of possible contamination of the marine environment. Significant differences were discovered in the microbiome of each type of sample (M1, M3 and mussels), with 92 %, 45 % and 44 % of exclusive OTUs found in mussel, M3 and M1 samples respectively. Seasonal differences were also detected in wastewater samples, with which abiotic parameters (temperature, pH) could be strongly involved. Bacteria present in raw wastewater (M1) were associated with the human gut microbiome, and therefore, potential pathogens that could be circulating in the population in specific periods were detected (e.g., Arcobacter sp. and Clostridium sp.). A considerable decrease in putative pathogenic organisms from the M1 to M3 wastewater fractions and the scarce presence in mussels (<0.5 % total reads) confirmed the effectiveness of pathogen removal in the wastewater treatment plant. Our results showed the potential of the DNA metabarcoding technique for monitoring studies and confirmed its application in wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) and environmental contamination studies. Although this technique cannot determine if the infective pathogens are present, it can characterize the microbial communities and the putative pathogens that are circulating through the population (microbiome of M1) and also confirm the efficacy of depuration treatment, which can directly affect the aquaculture sector and even human and veterinary health.

Comparison of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon accumulation in crab tissues with the ambient marine particles from shallow hydrothermal vents, northeast Taiwan

This study investigated and compared polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in crab (Xenograpsus testudinatus), suspended particulate matter, and surface sediment sampled from Kuei-shan-tao (KST) shallow water vents just offshore northeast Taiwan. The total concentrations of PAHs (t-PAHs) in suspended particles near the vents (533-685 ng g^-1 dw) were two orders of magnitude higher than the overlying sediment (3.42-6.06 ng g^-1 dw). The t-PAHs in sediment were significantly lower than those found in suspended particulate matter and all crab tissues tested, including hepatopancreas (192-1154 ng g^-1 dw), gill (221-748 ng g^-1 dw), muscle (30-174 ng g^-1 dw), and exoskeleton (22-96 ng g^-1 dw). Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated tissue-specific bioaccumulation of PAHs in crabs. The compositions of PAHs in gill, muscle, and exoskeleton were mainly low molecular weight, while the composition in the hepatopancreas included both high and low molecular weight PAHs. Highly variable but characteristic PAH congeners and concentrations in crab tissues and ambient aquatic particles reflect bioaccumulation.

Reconciling the geogenic and non-crustal origins of elements in an Indo-Bangla transboundary river, Atrai: Pollution status, sediment quality, and preliminary risk assessment

This study has been conducted on an anthropogenically less influenced transboundary river (Atrai: Indo-Bangladesh) to comprehend the inherent geochemistry and identify potential elemental sources. In doing so, across the Bangladeshi portion, 30 river-bed samples were culled and studied by neutron activation analysis to quantify the abundances of 15 geochemically and toxicologically significant elementals (Na, Al, K, Ti, Cr, Mn, Co, Zn, As, Rb, Sb, Cs, Ba, Th, and U). The results revealed that the mean concentrations (μg/g) of Rb (154.6), Cs (7.53), Th (20.90), and U (4.88) were 1.5-2.0 times higher than crustal values. Besides, geo-environmental indices revealed 'uncontaminated to moderately contaminated' pollution status with minor enrichment or contamination for Rb, Th, Sb, U, and Cs, relatively concentrated in the mid-to-downstream zone possessed geogenic and non-crustal origins. The positive matrix factorization and other statistical approaches revealed predominant geogenic enrichment of Na, K, Al, Ti, Zn, Cs, Rb, As, Th, and U from differential mineralogical compositions via weathering, elemental fractionations, and biogeochemical mobilization. Contrariwise, several anthropogenic sources (for Cr, Sb, Co, Mn, Th) were also ascertained in the vicinity of Atari River. However, sediment characterization based on SQG threshold values manifested that Cr and Mn possess rare biological effects on local aquatic organisms. Nevertheless, SQGs-based and ecological risk indices invoked minor to no potential ecotoxicological intimidations for the considered metal(oid)s (Cr, Mn, Co, Zn, As, and Sb). Hence, this study manifested the usefulness of a less anthropogenically affected river to reckon geogenic and non-crustal elemental origins in the compounded riverine sediment.

Concentrations and Human Health Risk of Organochlorines in Farmed Freshwater Products: Fish Ponds around Changsha, China

ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted to reveal the concentrations and patterns of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in seven species of freshwater food products (Procambarus clarkii, Ctenopharyngodon idellus, Parabramis pekinensis, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Cyprinus carpio, Aristichthys nobilis, and Carassius auratus) collected from aquaculture farms around Changsha, People's Republic of China. The OCPs and PCBs in the muscle tissue of these species were analyzed to assess the health risk associated with dietary intake. The mean concentrations of OCPs and PCBs were 6.38 to 15.90 and 3.18 to 5.12 ng g-1 wet weight, respectively. Heptachlor and δ-HCH were the main OCP contaminants in the tested samples, accounting for >74% of the total OCPs. PCB52 was the main PCB, accounting for >88% of the total PCBs. The bioaccumulation of OCPs and PCBs in these aquatic products depends upon the species. C. idellus had the highest concentrations of OCPs, and H. molitrix had the highest concentrations of PCBs. The mean lipid concentration in these freshwater species was 6.08 to 19.8% (dry weight) and was significantly correlated with the concentrations of OCPs and PCBs. The health risk from consumption of these freshwater species was assessed based on the hazard ratios and hazard quotient, and consumption of these products was determined to pose a carcinogenic risk.

HIGHLIGHTS

Spatial distribution, source identification and ecological risk assessment of POPs and heavy metals in lake sediments of Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul needs to be protected and constantly monitored water resources due to its increasing population and the decrease in precipitation. This study aims to comprehensively reveal surface sediments collected from reservoirs that supply water to Istanbul concerning POPs (PAHs, PCBs, and OCPs) and heavy metals; to identify possible sources of PAHs, and conduct their ecological risk assessment. Pollution indices in this study were used as contamination degree (CD) contamination factor (CF), geoaccumulation index (I_geo), pollution load index (PLI) and Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs). Total PAH concentrations of surface sediments at the sampling points ranged from 46.29 ng/g (A7) to 403.9 ng/g (A15). Benzo(b)fluoranthene (5.647-59.42 ng/g), Pyrene (3.625-83.10 ng/g), Fluoranthene (3.363-66.48 ng/g), Phenanthrene (3.115-52.48 ng/g), Chrysene (3.532-43.98 ng/g), Naphthalene (6.606-36.20 ng/g), Benzo(g,h,i)perylene (3.316-41.73 ng/g) and Indeno(1,2,3-c,d)pyrene (3.453-38.84 ng/g) are the dominant PAH compounds. PAH pollution may be caused by the village-town settlements near the dam and the O7-D020 highway. Total OCP concentration ranged from 2.233 ng/g (A12) to 7.337 ng/g (A1), while total PCB concentration ranged from 0.246 ng/g (A13) to 3.708 ng/g (A1). The lowest total OCP and PCB concentrations were found in surface sediments taken from Kazandere, Papuçdere and Alibey Dam lakes. DDT p,p (0.072-5.177 ng/g) has the highest concentration among all sediment samples. While the most dominant OCP compounds in the samples were DDT p,p, DDE p,p and DDD p,p, HCH alpha, HCH beta, respectively, PCB 153, 138 and 180 were the highest detected PCB congeners in the same samples. Total heavy metal concentration varied from 77,812 mg/kg to 267,072 mg/kg. According to PAH diagnostic analysis, the surface sediments of Terkos, Büyükçekmece, Elmalı, Darlık, Sazlıdere, Alibey and Ömerli Dams were polluted by petrogenic sources, while the surface sediments of Kazandere and Papuçdere Dams were affected by pyrogenic sources. None of the levels of POPs in the samples exceeded the ERM values. Slight and moderate contamination of heavy metals, such as Pb and Zn, were present in most of the sampling points according to CD, CF, PLI and I_geo values. The quality criteria of heavy metals showed that almost all of the sampling points had Cd, Pb and Hg concentrations below the ERL values. The Ni concentrations at most of the sampling points significantly exceeded the ERM values. The concentrations of As, Cr, Cu and especially Ni and Zn exhibit a significant toxic risk to aquatic organisms to sediment quality criteria.

Review on strategies of close-to-natural wetland restoration and a brief case plan for a typical wetland in northern China

Wetlands play an important role in sustaining ecosystems on the earth, which regulate water resources, adjust local climate and produce food for human beings, etc. However, wetlands are facing huge challenges due to human activities and other natural evolution, such as area shrinkage, function weakening and biodiversity decrease, and so on, therefore, some wetlands need to be urgently restored. In this study, the main technology components of close-to-natural restoration of wetlands were summarized. The ecological water requirement and water resource allocation can be optimized for the water balance between social, economy and ecology, which is a key prerequisite for maintaining wetland ecosystem. The pollution of wetland sediments and soils can be assessed by various indicators to provide the scientific basis for natural restoration of wetland base, and suitable strategies should be taken according to the actual conditions of wetland bases. The hydrological connectivity in wetlands and with related water system can be numerically simulated to make the optimal plan for improvement of hydrological connectivity. The ecological restoration of wetlands with the synergetic function of plants, animals and microorganisms was summarized, to improve the quality of wetland water environment and maintain the ecosystem stability. Based on the wetland close-to-natural restoration strategies, a brief ecological restoration plan for a typical wetland, Zaozhadian Wetland, near Xiong'an New Area in the north China was proposed from water resource guarantee, base pollution management, hydrological connectivity improvement and biological restoration. The close-to-natural restoration shows more effective, sustainable and long-lasting and thus a practical prospect.

Utility of a source-related matrix in basin management studies: a practice on a sub-Basin in Turkey

According to the water framework directive (WFD), the chemical status should be determined for each water body in a basin through monitoring and evaluation studies, and the gap between the status of water bodies and good water status should be revealed in river basin management plans. In this context, the methodology starting with the evaluation of the monitoring results of the priority substances (PSs) until the end of determining the measures to achieve good condition in surface waters was given in this study. The key aim was to provide a useful methodology defined as a matrix for determining the sources of pollutants that caused this gap. This matrix was applied to the most polluted sub-basin of Küçük Menderes Basin located on the western part of the Turkey. Monitoring studies were carried out in 21 water bodies for a 1-year period for 45 PSs and monitoring results were compared with environmental quality standards (EQS). It was determined that 13 of 45 PSs in 15 water bodies exceeded the EQS. The common PSs in the basin were lead, nickel, fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, C10-13 chloroalkanes, and 4-nonylphenols and average rates of exceeding the EQS were 58.3%, 36.4%, 91.5%, 99.9%, 74.8%, and 49.4%, respectively. The detailed emission inventory of each water body in the basin has been made. Potential sources of PSs were searched via the matrix formed and a total number of 420 basic and supplementary measures were proposed to improve the water quality of the sub-basin.

Internal positive feedback promotes water quality improvement for a recovering hyper-eutrophic lake: A three-dimensional nutrient flux tracking model

Nutrient dynamics in lakes are determined by the combined effects of external and internal nutrient fluxes. However, the feedback loop of nutrient fluxes and water quality changes is still an open question. An integrated three-dimensional flux tracking approach based on the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code model was established to quantify the long-term dynamic changes in external and internal processes in Lake Dianchi (one of the three most hyper-eutrophic lakes in China), and to explore the potential causes of water quality improvement during 2012-2018. The long-term trends and relative influences of nutrient fluxes on water quality were identified. The results showed that the inflow flux was the largest input source and declined by 50% between 2003 and 2012, which was followed by a stable trend from 2012 to 2018. The second largest input source was benthic release, which exhibited a significant interannual reduction. Algae sedimentation was the largest removal process, and declined by 45% between 2012 and 2018. An integrated analysis demonstrated that, following an external loading reduction prior to 2012, the positive feedback of internal fluxes promoted water quality improvement during 2012-2018. Considering the long timescale of the nutrient-flux feedback mechanism, reducing external loading is still the top priority for a long-term virtuous cycle of water quality in the process of eutrophic lake restoration.

Occurrence, distribution and partitioning of polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDTs) in Chaohu Lake, Southeast China

Polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDTs) are a class of compounds structurally similar to dioxins that possess various toxicological impacts on living organisms. Unfortunately, information on the levels of PCDTs in freshwater lakes in China is still scarce. In this work, the occurrence of 14 congeners of PCDTs in different matrices (i.e., sediment, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and water) of Chaohu Lake was investigated. It was determined that the concentrations of 14 PCDTs (Σ₁₄PCDTs) in the sediment, SPM, and surface water were 0.40-3.55 ng g^-1 (dry weight, d.w.), 0.38-2.95 ng·g^-1 d.w., and 0.34-2.61 ng L^-1, respectively. The dominant congener found in sediments was 1,2,3,4,7-penta-CDT (19.54%), and 1,3,9-tri-CDT was the predominant congener in SPM (19.13%) and water (20.08%). Medium- and high-chlorinated PCDTs were detected as the major compounds in sediments and SPM. The low-chlorinated PCDTs (e.g., mono-CDTs) have higher relative percentages in the water than those detected in the sediment samples. The annual Σ₁₄PCDT input of the eight main tributaries to Chaohu Lake was 19.90 kg. A strong linear correlation between the Σ₁₄PCDT levels and the organic carbon (OC) content demonstrated that OC had an important influence on the PCDT redistribution in Chaohu Lake. In addition, the organic carbon normalized partitioning coefficient (logK_OC) of PCDTs in the SPM-water system in Chaohu Lake was 1.95-2.49 mL g^-1, and correlations between logK_OC and other typical environment-related properties of PCDTs were established. This study provided useful data on the evaluation of ecological risks of PCDTs in Chaohu Lake.

Suspended Particulate Matter-A Source or Sink for Chemical Mixtures of Organic Micropollutants in a Small River under Baseflow Conditions?

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) plays an important role in the fate of organic micropollutants in rivers during rain events, when sediments are remobilized and turbid runoff components enter the rivers. Under baseflow conditions, the SPM concentration is low and the contribution of SPM-bound contaminants to the overall risk of organic contaminants in rivers is assumed to be negligible. To challenge this assumption, we explored if SPM may act as a source or sink for all or specific groups of organic chemicals in a small river. The concentrations of over 600 contaminants and the mixture effects stemming from all chemicals in in vitro bioassays were measured for river water, SPM, and the surface sediment after solid-phase extraction or exhaustive solvent extraction. The bioavailable fractions of chemicals and mixture effects were estimated after passive equilibrium sampling of enriched SPM slurries and sediments in the lab. Dissolved compounds dominated the total chemical burden in the water column (water plus SPM) of the river, whereas SPM-bound chemicals contributed up to 46% of the effect burden even if the SPM concentration in rivers was merely 1 mg/L. The equilibrium between water and SPM was still not reached under low-flow conditions with SPM as a source of water contamination. The ratios of SPM-associated to sediment-associated neutral and hydrophobic chemicals as well as the ratios of the mixture effects expressed as bioanalytical equivalent concentrations were close to 1, suggesting that the surface sediment can be used as a proxy for SPM under baseflow conditions when the sampling of a large amount of water to obtain sufficient SPM cannot be realized.

Suspended particulate matter (SPM)-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in lakes and reservoirs across a large geographical scale

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) plays a key role in the environmental fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in lake environment. However, less is known about the occurrence, compositions and sources of SPM-bound PAHs as well as the correlations between SPM-bound PAHs and different suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) on large geographical scale. In this study, we focused on the SPM-bound PAHs in 46 lakes and reservoirs across China to fill this gap. Our results showed that the concentrations of Σ₂₀ PAHs ranged from 334 to 38427 ng·g^-1 with a geometric mean (GM) of 3915 ng·g^-1. The occurrence of SPM-bound PAHs in this study was at a moderate level with large variations, which was associated with location and water depth according to linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Phenanthrene (Phe) was investigated as the overwhelming species with a GM of 1777 ng·g^-1, and was followed by fluoranthene (Fla), fluorene (Flu) and pyrene (Pyr) with GMs of 499 ng·g^-1, 276 ng·g^-1 and 184 ng·g^-1, respectively. The profiles of SPM-bound PAHs were primarily dominated by low-ring PAHs ranging from 56.0% to 97.1% (85.5% ± 7.7%, mean ± standard deviation). Four diagnostic ratios were applied for preliminary diagnoses, but inconsistent results were obtained in most samples. Ridge regression was applied to ascertain the potential influences of different SPOM on SPM-bound PAHs. The results revealed that the presence of SPM-bound PAHs was not only influenced by anthropogenic emissions, but also associated with biogenic organic matter. Our results provided a higher explanation than those just preliminarily estimated by total organic carbon (TOC). Nevertheless, there still exist over 50% of variance unexplained for most PAHs, and further study could focus more on the information of SPOM structures and potential local effects.

Spatiotemporal variations of spectral characteristics of dissolved organic matter in river flowing into a key drinking water source in China

The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in inflowing river, flowing into drinking water, have profound influences on the quality and safety of water. Here, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and three-dimensional fluorescence (EEM) spectroscopy were combined to investigate the spatiotemporal variations of DOM in Nanfei River flowing into Chaohu Lake in China. 24 water samples and 24 surface sediments samples (including dry-to-wet transition season and wet season in 2018) were collected from different types of outlets. Parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) model and correlation analysis were conducted to identify the primary sources of DOM. Two humic-like components (C1 235-250 nm/385-430 nm and C3 255-270 nm/455-510 nm) and one tryptophan-like component (C2 270-290 nm/320-350 nm) were effectively identified by PARAFAC model. The results showed DOM concentration presented significant spatiotemporal variations. The concentration was much lower in water than in surface sediments in dry-to-wet transition season, but higher in the wet season. Fluorescence index (FI), biological index (BIX) and humification index (HIX) were used to judge characteristic of DOM origination. These indexes indicated that, DOM in Nanfei River had both the characteristics of humus and autogenous, but neogene autogenic feature was stronger, which was largely due to mixture of water, resuspension and desorption of DOM in sediments and photochemical degradation. In addition, the characteristic parameter of molecular mass of DOM (the values of M) had an obvious linear relationship with the fluorescence intensity ratio of fulvic acid-like to humic acid-like (C1/C3), indicating that macromolecular substances could be removed by adding or improving membrane treatment. These provided technical support for improving quality and comprehensive treatment of drinking water sources.

Persistent organic pollutants are still present in surface marine sediments from the Seto Inland Sea, Japan

Although persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are currently banned or strictly controlled under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, POPs are still distributed worldwide due to their environmental persistence, atmospheric transport, and bioaccumulation. Herein we investigated the current concentrations of POPs in the sediments from Seto Inland Sea, Japan and sought to clarify the factors currently controlling the POPs concentration of the surface sediments from Seto Inland Sea. The concentrations of hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), and chlordane isomers (CHLs) in sediments from Seto Inland Sea were <0.002-1.20 ng g^-1, 0.01-2.51 ng g^-1, and 0.01-0.48 ng g^-1, respectively. Resuspension increased the concentrations of HCHs, HCB, and DDTs in the surface sediment with the release of historically contaminated pollutants accumulated in a lower layer. We speculate that CHLs in air that were removed by atmospheric deposition affects the concentration of CHLs in surface sediments.

Response of chemical properties, microbial community structure and functional genes abundance to seasonal variations and human disturbance in Nanfei River sediments

The Nanfei River, located in Hefei City, Anhui Province, subjected to increased nutrient loads from point and/or non-point source. Little is known about the indicators indicating heterogeneity of surface sediments. We aimed to identify the suitable indicators that can reflect the sediment heterogeneity by analyzing the sensitivity of sediment physicochemical properties group, microbial communities and diversity indices group and C, N, S-functional genes group to seasonal and regional changes. River sediments from different areas (urban area, urban-rural fringe and rural area) were collected in the level, dry and wet seasons, respectively. The chemical parameters had most significant regional heterogeneity, but no seasonal differences. Seasons had a greater impact on the overall microbial community structure than the areas. Specifically, the relative abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were more sensitive to seasonal changes. Overall, seasonal changes showed the greatest impact on the functional genes group, with the S-functional genes (dsrB and aprA) group providing the clearest seasonal variation. Considering the seasonal distribution of functional genes and their sensitivity to environmental factors, we speculated that the sulfate-reducing gene (dsrB), the methanogenic gene (mcrA) and the anammox gene (hzo) could be identified as sensitive indicators to indicate the seasonal heterogeneity of surface sediments in different river sections of the same river in the short term. We also concluded that environmental variables were more conducive to indicating the regional heterogeneity of sediments. This study provided a valuable reference for assessing the heterogeneity or ecological stress of river sediments.

Occurrence, distribution and ecological risk of trace metals and organic pollutants in surface sediments from a Southeastern European river (Someşu Mic River, Romania)

The increasing contamination of fresh water resources by trace metals and persistent organic pollutants is a major environmental concern. In the present study, we investigated, for the first time, the distribution, sources and ecological risk of trace metals and organic pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), in surface sediments from a Southeastern European river (Someşu Mic River, Romania). Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn ranged from 0.04 to 0.4, 9.4 to 43.15, 7.2 to 65.6, 12.3 to 131.4, 14.7 to 47.7 and 42.1 to 236.8 mg kg^-1 dw, respectively. Concentrations of total PAHs, PCBs and OCPs ranged from 24.8 to 575.6, 2.7 to 252.7 and 2.1 to 44.3 ng g^-1 dw, respectively. Some sediment parameters, i.e., pH, total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic matter (OM) contents, played a significant role in the spatial distribution of contaminants. A combined analysis based on diagnostic ratios and multivariate analyses revealed PAHs originating mainly from pyrolytic sources. PCB compositions showed distinct contamination signatures for tri- to tetra-chlorinated PCBs, characteristic of contamination by Aroclor-1016 and -1254 technical mixtures. The dominant OCP congeners were α-HCH and p,p'-DDD, reflecting past use of technical HCHs and DDTs in agricultural practices. Metal source and pollution status was assessed using geoaccumulation index and enrichment factor, which indicate widespread pollution by Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni and Cu. The use of Sediments Quality Guidelines (SQGs), mean effect range-median quotient (m-ERM-Q) and toxic equivalent factor (TEF) indicated that the highest ecological risks occurred for PCBs and DDTs. This work presents not only initial baseline information on the extent of organic and inorganic contaminations in a river of ecological and economical interest, but also provides a diagnostic ratio/statistical combined approach that can be used to evaluate sediment quality in similar environments.

Exchanges of nitrogen and phosphorus across the sediment-water interface influenced by the external suspended particulate matter and the residual matter after dredging

Dredging is frequently implemented for the reduction of internal nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loadings and the control of eutrophication. Residuals during dredging activities and external pollution loadings after dredging both commonly contribute to influence the effectiveness of dredging and have been widely discussed. In the current study, the exchanges of N and P across the sediment-water interface (SWI) to these two factors were compared in a six-month field incubation experiment. The results showed that the continuous deposition of external suspended particulate matter (SPM) led ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺N) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) fluxes across the newly formed SWI to increase by factors of 4.16 and 12.71, respectively, while residual material caused the same fluxes to increase by factors of 2.06 and 5.06. Both the deposition of external SPM and the residual matter led to higher increase of the fluxes of P across the SWI than those of the fluxes of N across the SWI after dredging. The SPM easily adsorbed P in the water due to extensive adsorption of water soluble organic matter (consisting primarily of easily-decomposed humic-like substances), iron, and aluminum. However, the decomposition of organic matter in the SPM after the deposition on the dredged sediment accelerated the dissolution of redox-sensitive P and organic P across the SWI after dredging. Both the increase in the fluxes of N and P across the SWI would further increase the concentrations of N and P in the overlying water and thereby aggravate the eutrophication status in lakes. More frequent dredging operations might be necessary to reduce the fluxes of N and P from the sediment due to the continuous influence of the external SPM and the residual matter.

Anthropogenic PAHs in lake sediments: a literature review (2002-2018)

Lake sediments are an important reservoir for toxic and hydrophobic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Monitoring of PAHs in sediment is helpful to understand pollution mechanisms and anthropogenic activities. This study reviews studies of PAHs in lake sediments published during 2002-2018. The studies' findings are analyzed, distributions of PAHs in lake sediments are summarized, and the applicability of lake sediments for tracking changes in PAH emission sources is emphasized. Lake sediments heavily polluted with PAHs are distributed in China, Egypt, the USA, and some urban lakes in Africa. The high levels of PAHs are predominantly associated with human activities such as anthropogenic combustion, petroleum industries, road traffic, and socioeconomic factors. However, the concentrations of sedimentary PAHs in most lakes were below the international guideline values.

Selected persistent organic pollutants levels in the Ankara River by months

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are banned in almost all countries due to their adverse health effects while they are still present in the environment due to their persistence. As the dissipation and the emission factors of POPs change by temperature and other environmental factors current study aimed to determine selected POPs, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water and sediment samples collected from 12 stations located in Ankara River, Turkey, for 12 months. C-18 solid-phase extraction technique was used to extract organic pollutants and the analysis were performed using a validated gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method. DDE was the most frequently detected contaminant in water samples. Even though no PCB residues were present in water samples, PCB101 was the most common contaminant in sediment. Although both matrices had the least load of pollutants in winter, there was an increase in presence and concentration of pollutants from late spring to autumn.

Towards an eDNA metabarcode-based performance indicator for full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants

Knowledge-driven management for wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) performance becomes increasingly important considering the globally growing production of wastewater and the rising demand of clean water supply. Even though the potential of microbial organisms (bacteria and protists) as bioindicators for WWTP performance is well known, it is far from being fully exploited for routine monitoring programs. Therefore, we here used massive sequencing of environmental (e)DNA metabarcodes from bacterial (V3-V4 region of the SSU rRNA gene) and eukaryote (V9 region of the SSU rRNA gene) communities in 21 activated sludge samples obtained from full-scale municipal WWTPs in Germany. Microbial community patterns were compared to standard WWTP operating parameters and two traditionally used WWTP performance indicators (Sludge Biotic Index and Sludge Index). Both indices showed low concordance and hardly correlated with chemical WWTP performance parameters nor did they correlate with microbial community structures. In contrast, microbial community profiles significantly correlated with WWTP performance parameters and operating conditions of the plants under study. Therefore, eDNA metabarcode profiles of whole microbial communities indicate the performance of WWTP and can provide useful information for management strategies. We here suggest a strategy for the development of an eDNA metabarcode based bioindicator system, which can be implemented in future standard monitoring programs for WWTP performance and effluent quality.

Ecotoxicity evaluation of natural suspended particles using the microalga, Euglena gracilis

As vectors for pollutants, suspended particles (SPs) have been studied for many years. However, limited studies have focused on the ecotoxicity of natural SPs. This study examined ecotoxicity of natural SPs isolated from Gonghu Bay and its Ecological Restoration Area (ERA) water samples by Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) using the microalga Euglena gracilis as a model organism. Effects of SPs on algae growth, photosynthesis pigment contents, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and DNA damage were characterized to determine the effects of ecological restoration. Additionally, SPs were separated into nanoscale (<1 μm diameter) and common-scale (≥1 μm diameter) groups by size, to compare the differences in toxicity of SPs with different sizes. We found, in naturally occurring concentrations in Gonghu Bay, nanoscale SPs were more toxic than common-scale ones. However, no significant adverse effects were detected in the nanoscale SPs from the ERA, which demonstrated that ecological restoration might reduce the toxicity of nanoscale SPs. The results were supported by the inhibition of growth, SOD activities and DNA damage, while no adverse influences were detected on pigment contents of E. gracilis in all the treated groups. Our study provides new insights into the toxic effects of SPs.

Photodegradation behaviors of polychlorinated biphenyls in methanol by UV-irradiation: Solvent adducts and sigmatropic arrangement

This study has investigated the photolysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in methanol solution under UV irradiation. The results showed that the PCBs containing ortho-chlorine can generate both hydroxylated and methoxylated PCBs (HO-PCBs and MeO-PCBs), while the PCBs with a meta-chlorine but without ortho-chlorine can only generate MeO-PCBs as the only solvent adducts. No solvent adducts were detected during the photochemical reaction of 4-chlorobiphenyl (PCB-3), indicating the para-chlorine cannot be attacked by solvent molecule to form correspondent solvent adducts. The sigmatropic rearrangement was found during the photochemical reaction of ortho-substituted PCBs, but cannot occur in the reaction of PCBs with only meta- or para-chlorine, indicating that ortho-chlorine played a vital role in the sigmatropic rearrangement reaction. In addition, the seteric hindrance can also lead to the generation of sigmatropic rearrangement products. The effect of solvent was investigated in the case of photochemical reaction of 2-chlorobiphenyl (PCB-1), the results showed that sigmatropic rearrangement can occur in different solvents, and corresponding solvent adducts were generated in the photochemical reaction of PCB-1 in different solvents.

Different partition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon on environmental particulates in freshwater: Microplastics in comparison to natural sediment

Microplastics pollution in the aquatic ecosystems has aroused increasing concerns in recent years. Though microplastics are known to sorb organic contaminants from water, the interaction mechanisms between microplastics and organic chemicals are not yet well understood. Here we investigated the partition characteristics of phenanthrene (Phe) in three mass-produced plastic particles, including polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS) and polyvinylchloride (PVC)， and one natural sediment, as a comparison. The sorption kinetics of Phe onto microplastics and natural sediment were successfully described by the pseudo-second-order model (R² > 0.992), while the equilibrium data were best-fitted to the Langmuir isotherm (R² > 0.995). Compared with natural sediment, microplastics exhibited higher capacities for Phe which followed an order of PE > PS > PVC. As the aqueous concentration of pyrene (Pyr) increased, both uptakes and distribution coefficients (K_d) of Phe within the solids decreased, with natural sediment giving the largest decline. Although proportions of Phe desorbed from the contaminated microplastics were low, due to the high Phe uptake, microplastics released larger amounts of the sorbed Phe to water than the natural sediment during the desorption process. Given their minimal abundance relative to natural sediment, microplastics may play a less important role in the transport of organic pollutants in a natural aquatic environment.
