ZnO nanoparticles and zeolite influence soil nutrient availability but do not affect herbage nitrogen uptake from biogas slurry

Current and emerging nanotechnology for sustainable development of agriculture: Implementation design strategy and application

Recently, agriculture systems have faced numerous challenges involving sustainable nutrient use efficiency and feeding, environmental pollution especially heavy metals (HMs), infection of harmful microorganisms, and maintenance of crop production quality during postharvesting and packaging. Nanotechnology and nanomaterials have emerged as powerful tools in agriculture applications that provide alternatives or support traditional methods. This review aims to address and highlight the current overarching issue and various implementation strategies of nanotechnology for sustainable agriculture development. In particular, the current progress of different nano-fertilizers (NFs) systems was analyzed to show their advances in enhancing the uptake and translocations in plants and improving nutrient bioavailability in soil. Also, the design strategy and application of nanotechnology for rapid detection of HMs and pathogenic diseases in plant crops were emphasized. The engineered nanomaterials have great potential for biosensors with high sensitivity and selectivity, high signal throughput, and reproducibility through various detection approaches such as Raman, colorimetric, biological, chemical, and electrical sensors. We obtain that the development of microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip (LoC) technologies offers the opportunity to create on-site portable and smart biodevices and chips for real-time monitoring of plant diseases. The last part of this work is a brief introduction to trends in nanotechnology for harvesting and packaging to provide insights into the overall applications of nanotechnology for crop production quality. This review provides the current advent of nanotechnology in agriculture, which is essential for further studies examining novel applications for sustainable agriculture.

The structural transformation reversibility of biogas slurry derived dissolved organic matter and its binding properties with norfloxacin under temperature fluctuation

The widespread use of biogas slurry could potentially raise the environmental risk of antibiotics. Dissolved organic matter (DOM), as the most active part of biogas slurry, was able to interact with antibiotics and play a crucial role in the structure and function of soil and aquatic ecosystems. The recent shifts in global climate patterns have garnered significant attention due to their substantial impact on temperature, thereby exerting a direct influence on the characteristics of DOM and subsequently on the environmental behavior of antibiotics. However, there is limited research concerning the impact of temperature on the binding of DOM and antibiotics. Thus, this study aimed to explore the temperature-dependent structural transformation and driving factors of biogas slurry-derived DOM (BSDOM). Additionally, the binding characteristics between BSDOM and the commonly used antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR) at different temperatures were studied by using multi spectroscopic methods and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis. The results suggested that the temperature-dependent structural transformation of BSDOM was reversible, with a slight lag in the transition temperature under cooling (13 °C for heating and 17 °C for cooling). Heating promoted the conversion of protein-like to humic-like substances while cooling favored the decomposition of humic-like substances. BSDOM and NOR were static quenching, with oxygen-containing functional groups such as C-O and -OH playing an important role. Temperature influenced the order of binding, the activity of the protein fraction, and its associated functional groups. At temperatures of 25 °C and 40 °C, the fluorescent components were observed to exhibit consistent binding preferences, whereby the humic-like component demonstrated a greater affinity for NOR compared to the protein-like component. However, the functional group binding order exhibited an opposite trend. At 10 °C, a new protein-like component appeared and bound preferentially to NOR, when no C-O stretch corresponding to the amide was observed. The finding will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the interaction mechanisms between DOM and antibiotics under climate change, as well as providing a theoretical basis to reduce the environmental risks of biogas slurry and antibiotics.

Development and testing of environment friendly nanohybrid coatings for sustainable agriculture technologies

Less than 50% of the applied urea fertilizer is taken up by plants due to poor nitrogen (N) use efficiency which affects overall agricultural productivity and leads to serious environmental and economic problems. Additionally, soils with high salinity might limit zinc (Zn) availability. Low Zn use efficiency (<30%) when applied as synthetic salts, e.g., zinc sulfate has therefore minimized their applicability. Within the past two decades, nanotechnology has gained a lot of interest in the development of effective nano fertilizers with high nutrient use efficiency (NUE). In this perspective, the approach of coating conventional fertilizers with nano materials especially, the ones which are essential nutrients has researched because of their high use efficiency and reduced losses. In this work, a novel and innovative formulation of hybrid nano fertilizer has been prepared for the sustainable release of nutrients. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs <50 nm) were incorporated into the biodegradable polymer (gelatin) and coated on urea using a fluidized bed coater. Among all the formulations, GZnSNPs (1.5% gelatin+0.5% elemental Zn as ZnO-NPs) showed a significant delay in urea release (<80 %) after 120 min). The sand column experiment showed sustainable Zn release for GZnSNPs i.e., 2.7 ppm vs. 3.5 ppm (GZnS) after the 6th day. Moreover, a substantial increase in wheat grain yield (6500 kg/ha), N uptake (46.5 kg/ha) and Zn uptake (21.64 g/ha) were observed for fields amended with GZnSNPs. The composition of GZnSNPs was valuable since this attracted the highest return relative to the other treatments. Gelatin supplied small N-containing molecules, resulting in extra value addition with ZnO-NPs thus increasing yield and fertilizer properties more relative to the same amount of elemental Zn given via bulk salt. Therefore, the findings of the current study recommend the use of ZnO-NPs in the agricultural sector without any negative effects on yield and NUE.

Nanobiochar Associated Ammonia Emission Mitigation and Toxicity to Soil Microbial Biomass and Corn Nutrient Uptake from Farmyard Manure

The unique properties of NB, such as its nano-size effect and greater adsorption capacity, have the potential to mitigate ammonia (NH₃) emission, but may also pose threats to soil life and their associated processes, which are not well understood. We studied the influence of different NB concentrations on NH₃ emission, soil microbial biomass, nutrient mineralization, and corn nutrient uptake from farmyard manure (FM). Three different NB concentrations i.e., 12.5 (NB1), 25 (NB2), and 50% (NB3), alone and in a fertilizer mixture with FM, were applied to corn. NB1 alone increased microbial biomass in soil more than control, but other high NB concentrations did not influence these parameters. In fertilizer mixtures, NB2 and NB3 decreased NH₃ emission by 25% and 38%, respectively, compared with FM alone. Additionally, NB3 significantly decreased microbial biomass carbon, N, and soil potassium by 34%, 36%, and 14%, respectively, compared with FM. This toxicity to soil parameters resulted in a 21% decrease in corn K uptake from FM. Hence, a high NB concentration causes toxicity to soil microbes, nutrient mineralization, and crop nutrient uptake from the FM. Therefore, this concentration-dependent toxicity of NB to soil microbes and their associated processes should be considered before endorsing NB use in agroecosystems.

Nanobiochar and Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Mixture Synergistically Increases Soil Nutrient Availability and Improves Wheat Production

Recently, nanomaterials have received considerable attention in the agricultural sector, due to their distinctive characteristics such as small size, high surface area to volume ratio, and charged surface. These properties allow nanomaterials to be utilized as nanofertilizers, that can improve crop nutrient management and reduce environmental nutrient losses. However, after soil application, metallic nanoparticles have been shown to be toxic to soil biota and their associated ecosystem services. The organic nature of nanobiochar (nanoB) may help to overcome this toxicity while maintaining all the beneficial effects of nanomaterials. We aimed to synthesize nanoB from goat manure and utilize it with CuO nanoparticles (nanoCu) to influence soil microbes, nutrient content, and wheat productivity. An X-ray diffractogram (XRD) confirmed nanoB synthesis (crystal size = 20 nm). The XRD spectrum showed a distinct carbon peak at 2θ = 42.9°. Fourier-transform spectroscopy of nanoB's surface indicated the presence of C=O, C≡N-R, and C=C bonds, and other functional groups. The electron microscopic micrographs of nanoB showed cubical, pentagonal, needle, and spherical shapes. NanoB and nanoCu were applied alone and as a mixture at the rate of 1000 mg kg^-1 soil, to pots where wheat crop was grown. NanoCu did not influence any soil or plant parameters except soil Cu content and plant Cu uptake. The soil and wheat Cu content in the nanoCu treatment were 146 and 91% higher, respectively, than in the control. NanoB increased microbial biomass N, mineral N, and plant available P by 57, 28, and 64%, respectively, compared to the control. The mixture of nanoB and nanoCu further increased these parameters, by 61, 18, and 38%, compared to nanoB or nanoCu alone. Consequently, wheat biological, grain yields, and N uptake were 35, 62 and 80% higher in the nanoB+nanoCu treatment compared to the control. NanoB further increased wheat Cu uptake by 37% in the nanoB+nanoCu treatment compared to the nanoCu alone. Hence, nanoB alone, or in a mixture with nanoCu, enhanced soil microbial activity, nutrient content, and wheat production. NanoB also increased wheat Cu uptake when mixed with nanoCu, a micronutrient essential for seed and chlorophyll production. Therefore, a mixture of nanobiochar and nanoCu would be recommended to farmers for improving their clayey loam soil quality and increasing Cu uptake and crop productivity in such agroecosystems.

Impact on Some Soil Physical and Chemical Properties Caused by Metal and Metallic Oxide Engineered Nanoparticles: A Review

In recent years, the release of metal and metallic oxide engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) into the environment has generated an increase in their accumulation in agricultural soils, which is a serious risk to the ecosystem and soil health. Here, we show the impact of ENPs on the physical and chemical properties of soils. A literature search was performed in the Scopus database using the keywords ENPs, plus soil physical properties or soil chemical properties, and elements availability. In general, we found that the presence of metal and metallic oxide ENPs in soils can increase hydraulic conductivity and soil porosity and reduce the distance between soil particles, as well as causing a variation in pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), electrical conductivity (EC), redox potential (Eh), and soil organic matter (SOM) content. Furthermore, ENPs or the metal cations released from them in soils can interact with nutrients like phosphorus (P) forming complexes or precipitates, decreasing their bioavailability in the soil solution. The results depend on the soil properties and the doses, exposure duration, concentrations, and type of ENPs. Therefore, we suggest that particular attention should be paid to every kind of metal and metallic oxide ENPs deposited into the soil.

Development and testing of zinc sulfate and zinc oxide nanoparticle-coated urea fertilizer to improve N and Zn use efficiency

Nitrogen (N) losses from conventional fertilizers in agricultural systems are very high, which can lead to serious environmental pollution with economic loss. In this study, innovative slow-release fertilizers were prepared using zinc (Zn) [nanoparticles (NPs) or in bulk], using molasses as an environmentally friendly coating. Several treatments were prepared using Zn in different concentrations (i.e., 0.25%, 0.5%, and 4% elemental Zn). The zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were prepared from zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO₄·7H₂O), and were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Furthermore, the Zn-loaded urea samples were tested for urea N release rate, leaching of water from soil, and crushing strength to assess the impact of coating on the final finished product. Pot experiments were conducted simultaneously to check the agronomic effects of Zn-coated slow-release urea on the growth and development of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The laboratory and pot results confirmed that the ZnO-NP treatments boost wheat growth and yield as a result of reduced N and Zn release. UZnNPs2 (urea coated with 0.5% ZnO-NPs and 5% molasses) demonstrated the best results among all the treatments in terms of slow nutrient release, N and Zn uptake, and grain yield. The UZnNPs2 treatment increased plant yield by 34% (i.e., 4,515 vs. 3,345 kg ha^-1) relative to the uncoated prill-treated crop because of the slower release of Zn and N.

ZnO nanoparticles as potential fertilizer and biostimulant for lettuce

Zn is an indispensable nutrient for crops that usually presents low bioavailability. Different techniques have been proposed to improve the bioavailability of Zn, including the use of nanofertilizers. The objective of the study was to evaluate the applications of drench (D) and foliar (F) ZnO nanoparticles (NZnO) compared to those of ionic Zn²⁺ (ZnSO₄) in lettuce. The plants cv. Great Lakes 407 was produced in pots of 4 L with perlite-peat moss (1:1) under greenhouse conditions. The treatments consisted of NZnO applications that replaced the total Zn provided with a Steiner solution, as follows: Zn²⁺ (100%D) (control); Zn²⁺ (50%D+50%F); NZnO (100%D); NZnO (50%D+50%F); NZnO (75%D); NZnO (50%D); NZnO (75%F) and NZnO (50%F). Four applications of Zn were made with a frequency of 15 days. 75 days after transplant (DAP), the fresh and dry biomass, chlorophyll a, b, and β-carotene, phenolics, flavonoids, antioxidant capacity, vitamin C, glutathione, H₂O₂, total protein, and enzymatic activity of PAL, CAT, APX, and GPX were evaluated. The mineral concentrations (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn, Ni, and Si) in the leaves and roots of plants were also determined. The results showed that, compared to Zn²⁺, NZnO promoted increases in biomass (14-52%), chlorophylls (32-69%), and antioxidant compounds such as phenolics, flavonoids, and vitamin C. The activity of enzymes like CAT and APX, as well as the foliar concentration of Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Si increased with NZnO. A better response was found in the plants for most variables with foliar applications of NZnO equivalent to 50-75% of the total Zn²⁺ applied conventionally. These results demonstrate that total replacement of Zn²⁺ with NZnO is possible, promoting fertilizer efficiency and the nutraceutical quality of lettuce.

Effect of moisture content on the evolution of bacterial communities and organic matter degradation during bioaugmented biogas residues composting

Composting is an excellent way to recycle biogas residues into a stable, non-toxic agricultural end product. In this study, the dynamic changes of physical-chemical parameters and bacterial community in three groups of bioaugmentation composting systems at different moisture contents (MC) of 50% (MC50), 60% (MC60) and 70% (MC70) were monitored. The differences of bacterial communities in composts with different initial MC were compared, and the interaction between biological and non-biological parameters was also explored. The results revealed that after 30 days of composting, the biogas residues compost in MC60 reached highest temperature of 64 °C, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) of 2%, seed germination index (GI) of 110%, and the longest thermophilic period duration of 5 days (55 °C). Additionally, the result of high-throughput sequencing showed that the diversity of bacterial communities in MC60 was the highest, and the abundance of Actinobacteria (16.93-52.63%), Firmicutes (8.71-56.75%), and Proteobacteria (16.88-46.95%) in all groups were the highest at phylum level. The LEfSe analysis indicated that the abundance of Ochrobactrum and Cellulomonadaceae in MC60 was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than with other treatments. Moreover, canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated thermophilic period duration is significantly (p < 0.05) positively correlated with Paenibacillus. Besides, it was found the relative abundance of Nocardiopsis and Georgenia has a significant (p < 0.01) correlation with the fertilizer efficiency of compost. These results showed that controlling the initial moisture content at 60% can improve the maturity and fertilizer efficiency of compost, and enable the bacteria beneficial to composting to gain the advantage of proliferation.

Effect of ZnO and CuO nanoparticles on the growth, nutrient absorption, and potential health risk of the seasonal vegetable Medicago polymorpha L

Background

Medicago polymorpha L., a seasonal vegetable, is commonly grown in China. The increasing use of nanoparticles (NPs) such as ZnO and CuO NPs in agriculture has raised concerns about their potential risks for plant growth and for human consumption. There is a lack of research on the effects of ZnO and CuO NPs on agronomic performance of Medicago polymorpha L. and their potential risks for human health.

Methods

In this study, different treatment concentrations of ZnO NPs (25, 50, 100, and 200 mg kg^-1) and CuO NPs (10, 25, 50, and 100 mg kg^-1) were used to determine their effects on the growth and nutrient absorption of Medicago polymorpha L., as well as their potential risk for human health.

Results

The results showed that ZnO and CuO NPs increased the fresh weight of Medicago polymorpha L. by 5.8-11.8 and 3.7-8.1%, respectively. The best performance for ZnO NPs occurred between 25-50 mg kg^-1 and the best performance for CuO NPs occurred between 10-25 mg kg^-1. Compared with the control, ZnO and CuO NPs improved the macronutrients phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca). The following micronutrients were also improved: iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn), with the exception of nitrogen (N) accumulation. Low treatment concentrations exhibited more efficient nutrient uptake than high treatment concentrations. A comprehensive analysis showed that the optimum concentrations were 25 mg kg^-1 for ZnO NPs and 10 mg kg^-1 for CuO NPs. The potential non-carcinogenic health risk of Medicago polymorpha L. treated with ZnO and CuO NPs was analyzed according to the estimated daily intake (EDI), the hazard quotient (HQ), and the cumulative hazard quotient (CHQ). Compared with the oral reference dose, the EDI under different ZnO and CuO NPs treatments was lower. The HQ and CHQ under different ZnO and CuO NPs treatments were far below 1. This indicated that Medicago polymorpha L. treated with ZnO and CuO NPs did not pose any non-carcinogenic health risk to the human body. Therefore, ZnO and CuO NPs were considered as a safe nano fertilizer for Medicago polymorpha L. production according to growth analysis and a human health risk assessment.

Facile coating of micronutrient zinc for slow release urea and its agronomic effects on field grown wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Slow release urea has been widely tested in recent past as an effective method to enhance the crop productivity with fewer environmental concerns. However, very few research studies have been performed using micronutrients as a source of slow release of urea nitrogen. A laboratory and field study were carried out to check the agronomic effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles and its bulk salt coatings on urea prills on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Different concentrations of zinc oxide nanoparticles (0.25, 0.5 and 4% elemental zinc) were coated on urea prills to slow down the release rate. Bulk zinc oxide salt (ZnO) with similar concentrations was also used in parallel to make a comparison between nano and bulk salt. The SEM of zinc oxide nanoparticles clearly depicted zinc oxide nanoparticles size within a range of 50-90 nm. The XRD and FTIR spectrums also showed its characteristics peak at designated positions. Field study revealed than 0.5% zinc oxide nanoparticles coated urea boosted the crop growth and yield in comparison to the bulk zinc oxide coated urea having similar zinc concentrations, i.e., 0.25%, 0.5% and 4% elemental zinc. The plant parameters like plant height, root length, root volume, grain yield and dry matter weight were significantly increased due to application of zinc oxide nanoparticles.

Nano agrochemical zinc oxide influences microbial activity, carbon, and nitrogen cycling of applied manures in the soil-plant system

The widespread use of nano-enabled agrochemicals in agriculture for remediating soil and improving nutrient use efficiency of organic and chemical fertilizers is increasing continuously with limited understanding on their potential risks. Recent studies suggested that nanoparticles (NPs) are harmful to soil organisms and their stimulated nutrient cycling in agriculture. However, their toxic effects under natural input farming systems are just at its infancy. Here, we aimed to examine the harmful effects of nano-agrochemical zinc oxide (ZnONPs) to poultry (PM) and farmyard manure (FYM) C and N cycling in soil-plant systems. These manures enhanced microbial counts, CO₂ emission, N mineralization, spinach yield and N recovery than control (unfertilized). Soil applied ZnONPs increased labile Zn in microbial biomass, conferring its consumption and thereby reduced the colony-forming bacterial and fungal units. Such effects resulted in decreasing CO₂ emitted from PM and FYM by 39 and 43%, respectively. Further, mineralization of organic N was reduced from FYM by 32%, and PM by 26%. This process has considerably decreased the soil mineral N content from both manure types and thereby spinach yield and plant N recoveries. In the ZnONPs amended soil, only about 23% of the applied total N from FYM and 31% from PM was ended up in plants, whereas the respective fractions in the absence of ZnONPs were 33 and 53%. Hence, toxicity of ZnONPs should be taken into account when recommending its use in agriculture for enhancing nutrient utilization efficiency of fertilizers or soil remediation purposes.

Mitigation of Salinity Stress Effects on Broad Bean Productivity Using Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticles Application

Water salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses, and the use of saline water for the agricultural sector will incur greater demand in the coming decades. Recently, nanoparticles (NPs) have been used for developing numerous plant fertilizers as a smart and powerful form of material with dual action that can alleviate the adverse effects of salinity and provide the plant with more efficient nutrient forms. This study evaluated the influence of calcium phosphate NPs (CaP-NPs) as a soil fertilizer application on the production and bioactive compounds of broad bean plants under salinity stress. Results showed that salinity had deleterious effects on plant yield with 55.9% reduction compared to control. On the other hand, CaP-NPs dramatically improved plant yield by 30% compared to conventional fertilizer under salinity stress. This improvement could be attributed to significantly higher enhancement in total soluble sugars, antioxidant enzymes, proline content, and total phenolics recorded use of nano-fertilizer compared to conventional use under salt stress. Additionally, nano-fertilizer reflected better mitigatory effects on plant growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, and oxidative stress indicators (MDA and H2O2). Therefore, our results support the replacement of traditional fertilizers comprising Ca2+ or P with CaP-nano-fertilizers for higher plant productivity and sustainability under salt stress.

Overview on agricultural potentials of biogas slurry (BGS): applications, challenges, and solutions

The residual slurry obtained from the anaerobic digestion (AD) of biogas feed substrates such as livestock dung is known as BGS. BGS is a rich source of nutrients and bioactive compounds having an important role in establishing diverse microbial communities, accelerating nutrient use efficiency, and promoting overall soil and plant health management. However, challenges such as lower C/N transformation rates, ammonia volatilization, high pH, and bulkiness limit their extensive applications. Here we review the strategies of BGS valorization through microbial and organomineral amendments. Such cohesive approaches can serve dual purposes viz. green organic inputs for sustainable agriculture practices and value addition of biomass waste. The literature survey has been conducted to identify the knowledge gaps and critically analyze the latest technological interventions to upgrade the BGS for potential applications in agriculture fields. The major points are as follows: (1) Bio/nanotechnology-inspired approaches could serve as a constructive platform for integrating BGS with other organic materials to exploit microbial diversity dynamics through multi-substrate interactions. (2) Advancements in next-generation sequencing (NGS) pave an ideal pathway to study the complex microflora and translate the potential information into bioprospecting of BGS to ameliorate existing bio-fertilizer formulations. (3) Nanoparticles (NPs) have the potential to establish a link between syntrophic bacteria and methanogens through direct interspecies electron transfer and thereby contribute towards improved efficiency of AD. (4) Developments in techniques of nutrient recovery from the BGS facilities' negative GHGs emissions and energy-efficient models for nitrogen removal. (5) Possibilities of formulating low-cost substrates for mass-multiplication of beneficial microbes, bioprospecting of such microbes to produce bioactive compounds of anti-phytopathogenic activities, and developing BGS-inspired biofertilizer formulations integrating NPs, microbial inoculants, and deoiled seed cakes have been examined.

Mitigating Ammonia and Greenhouse Gaseous Emission From Arable Land by Co-application of Zeolite and Biochar

The intensive use of chemical fertilizers in arable farming dramatically increased environmental pollution through anthropogenic ammonia (NH₃) and greenhouse gaseous emissions. Therefore, there is a need to develop improved fertilizer management practices that can reduce these losses. An experiment was conducted to assess the mitigating effects of sole or combined application of zeolite with biochar on gaseous emissions from arable land. For this purpose, zeolite (clinoptilolite) was mixed with different doses of biochar (produced from Dalbergia Sissoo wood chips) and applied along with the recommended dose of chemical fertilizer (NPK @ 150, 100, and 60 kg ha^-1, respectively) on arable land in years 2013-14 and 2014-15. Immediately after application, these were incorporated into the top 10 cm of the soil layer and wheat was sown. Treatments were as follows: C = control, Z = zeolite @ 5 t ha^-1, B1Z = biochar @ 3 t ha^-1 + zeolite @ 5 t ha^-1, B2Z = biochar @ 6 t ha^-1 + zeolite @ 5 t ha^-1, and B3Z = biochar @ 9 t ha^-1 + zeolite @ 5 t ha^-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. The experimental plot size was 6 m × 4 m. Randomly, ten soil samples from each plot were taken at a depth of 0-15 cm and mixed to get a composite sample. All the samples were immediately stored in a freezer at -18°C until gaseous analysis in order to prevent N transformations. Each soil sample was analyzed for emission of NH₃, CO₂, and CH₄ by using a selected-ion flow-tube mass spectrometer (SIFT-MS). Co-application of zeolite and biochar reduced NH₃ and CH₄ emissions by an average of 87 and 58% compared to the control, respectively. However, CO₂ emission was increased by 104% relative to the control. The NH₃ emission was decreased by an average of 61, 78, 90, and 92% by Z, B1Z, B2Z, and B3Z treatments compared to the control. Similarly, the decrement in CH₄ emission was 47, 54, 55, and 65%. In contrast, the increment in CO₂ emission was 42, 110, and 160% for B1Z, B2Z, and B3Z, respectively, while interestingly, a reduction of 12% was observed in Z treatment. Besides, co-application of zeolite and biochar at the highest dose (B3Z) improved soil chemical properties such as soil EC, OM, total N, as well as available P and K relative to zeolite alone. It is concluded that the combined application of zeolite and biochar can mitigate NH₃ and greenhouse emissions and improve soil chemical characteristics, thus enhancing the environmental worth of arable farming.

Combined passivators regulate the heavy metal accumulation and antioxidant response of Brassica chinensis grown in multi-metal contaminated soils

Passivation of heavy metals is one of the most efficient techniques to remediate soil pollution. However, passivators with single component are usually unsatisfactory in the case of multi-metal contaminated soils. To resolve this problem, a series of combined passivators containing different ratios of Fe-Mn ore, Fe powder, zeolite, bentonite, etc. were designed and used to study their effects on the growth, heavy metal accumulation, and the antioxidant response of Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.) as well as the soil available forms of heavy metals in a copper refinery's multi-metal (As, Cd, Pb, Cu) contaminated yellow-brown soil and an artificially contaminated (As, Cd, Pb, Cu) calcareous alluvial soil. The results showed that compared with the control, the addition of combined passivators significantly promoted cabbage growth, with the biomass increase up to 1.77 and 3.54 times in yellow-brown soil and calcareous alluvial soil, respectively. The activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, POD) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) decreased, while the chlorophyll content increased significantly, as compared with no passivators. In addition, passivator application decreased As, Cd, Pb, and Cu contents in shoots and roots by 34.8%, 45.6%, 34.9%, and 11.1% and 49.2%, 63.8%, 38.6%, and 46.4% in yellow-brown soil and by 29.8%, 27.3%, 26.8%, and 25.5% and 45.8%, 55.2%, 61.8%, and 5.7% in calcareous alluvial soil, respectively. Besides, the content of soil available heavy metals was reduced by 8.0-17.1% in yellow-brown soil and 3.3-19.1% in calcareous alluvial soil after the application of passivators. The results indicated that the combined passivators formulated in this experiment could efficiently reduce the content of the multi-metals in cabbage and relieve the oxidant stress and could be used as a way to remediate multi-metal polluted soils.

Responses of Moringa oleifera to alteration in soil properties induced by calcium nanoparticles (CaNPs) on mineral absorption, physiological indices and photosynthetic indicators

Background

The application of nanofertilisers in agriculture has been widely utilised due to their distinct characteristics and negative impacts of conventional chemical fertilisers. This study thus examined the influence of calcium nanoparticles (CaNPs) on soil composition vis-à-vis performance parameters in Moringa oleifera L exposed to water, 100 mg Ca(NO3)2kg−1 soil and 100, 75 and 50 mg CaNPs kg−1 soil. Soil morphology was determined with a scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX) and elemental composition in both soils and M. oleifera roots determined with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES).

Results

The CaNP-amended soils were more crystalline, more fertile and had reduced salinity. An increase in immobilisation percentage of heavy metals, improvement in physiological parameters (percentage germination, vigour indices, relative water contents, lengths of roots and shoots) and photosynthetic efficiency in M. oleifera were recorded.

Conclusion

This study has demonstrated that CaNPs could improve soil composition for better plant performance and can act as nanofertilisers mobilising essential nutrients.

Toxicity of NiO nanoparticles to soil nutrient availability and herbage N uptake from poultry manure

Recently, there is an increasing trend of using metallic nanoparticles (NPs) in agriculture due to their potential role in remediating soil pollution and improving nutrient utilization from fertilizers. However, evidence suggested that these NPs were toxic to the soil life and their associated functions, and this toxicity depended on their dose, type, and size. Here, a dose-dependent (5, 50, and 100 mg kg⁻¹ soil) toxicity of NiO NPs on poultry manure (PM: 136 kg N ha⁻¹) decomposition, nutrient mineralization, and herbage N uptake were studied in a standard pot experiment. The NPs doses were mixed with PM and applied in soil-filled pots where then ryegrass was sown. Results revealed that the lowest dose significantly increased microbial biomass (C and N) and respiration from PM, whereas a high dose reduced these parameters. This decrease in such parameters by the highest NPs dose resulted in 13 and 41% lower soil mineral N and plant available K from PM, respectively. Moreover, such effects resulted in 32 and 35% lower herbage shoot and root N uptakes from PM in this treatment. Both intermediate and high doses decreased herbage shoot Ni uptake from PM by 33 and 34%, respectively. However, all NPs doses did not influence soil Ni content from PM. Hence, our results indicated that high NPs dose (100 mg kg⁻¹) was toxic to decomposition, nutrient mineralization, and herbage N uptake from PM. Therefore, such NiONPs toxicity should be considered before recommending their use in agriculture for soil remediation or optimizing nutrient use efficiency of fertilizers.

Carbon sphere-zinc sulphate nanohybrids for smart delivery of zinc in rice (Oryza sativa L)

The laboratory research was attempted to find nano zinc fertilizer utilizing the carbon sphere as a substrate. Typically the encapsulation techniques are followed in the drug delivery system, the limited work was done in nano-based zinc micronutrient for slow release of nutrients to crop. The use efficiency of zinc micronutrients in the soil is only less than 6 percentage. In universal, the deficiency of zinc micronutrients causes malnutrition problems in human beings, especially in children. After considering this problem we planned to prepare zinc nano fertilizer by using the carbon sphere for need-based slow release and increase the use efficiency of zinc micronutrient in soil. In this study we synthesis the carbon sphere nanoparticle after the formation of carbon sphere the zinc sulphate was loaded and characterized by utilizing Scanning Electron Microscopy, Surface Area and Porosity, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy. The research result shows that the nano carbon sphere was excellently loaded with zinc sulphate to the tune of 8 percentage and it was confirmed by Energy dispersive X-beam spectroscopy. The zinc loaded carbon sphere release nutrient for a prolonged period of up to 600 h in the case of conventional zinc sulphate zinc release halted after 216 h in percolation reactor studies. The zinc nano fertilizer is recommended in agriculture to increase zinc use efficiency, crop yield without any environmental risk.

Effects of Bacillus sp. MR-1/2 and magnetite nanoparticles on yield improvement of rice by urea fertilizer under different watering regimes

AIMS

The present research aimed to examine the use of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) in combination with phyto-beneficial rhizobacterium (PhBR) for improvement of applied N recovery (ANR) from urea fertilizer in rice grown under deficient and optimum watering conditions.

METHODS AND RESULTS

The Bacillus sp. MR-1/2 was positive for acetylene reduction, phosphate solubilization and ACC deaminase activity at temperature ranges 35-45°C. In a pot experiment, urea, MNPs and Bacillus sp. MR-1/2 were applied either alone or in combination to rice plants grown in pots under water deficit and optimal watering conditions. Combined application of urea, MNPs and Bacillus sp. MR-1/2 increased the plant N content and ANR by 27 and 65%, respectively, over their respective control values in rice grown under optimum watering conditions, whereas these increases were 27 and 41%, respectively, in rice grown under water deficit conditions. This treatment also increased the kernel weight and plant dry matter by 36 and 60%, respectively, over control (urea alone) values in rice grown under water deficit conditions, whereas these increases were 31 and 21·8%, respectively, in rice grown under optimum watering conditions. Values of malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase and ethylene concentration were higher in control treatment under both the watering regimes. The application of Bacillus sp. MR-1/2 either alone or in combination with MNPs and urea reduced MDA contents, APX, catalase and ethylene production in the rice plants.

CONCLUSION

The combined application of MNPs+Bacillus sp. MR-1/2 reduced the N losses from applied urea, increased N uptake and ANR in rice, decreased MDA contents, APX and catalase activity and ethylene level in rice grown under deficit and optimum water conditions.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

The application of MNPs together with Bacillus sp. MR-1/2 may help to increase ANR and rice productivity under water deficit conditions with low cost of production.

Silver nanoparticles improved the plant growth and reduced the sodium and chlorine accumulation in pearl millet: a life cycle study

Salt stress in agricultural soils is a global issue and little information is available about the efficiency of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in plants under salt stress. The aim of current study was to assess the efficacy of AgNPs in improving plant growth and reducing the salt-induced damages in pearl millet. The exposure of pearl millet plants grown in pots containing soil to different doses of salinity (0, 120, 150 mM) and AgNPs (0, 10, 20 and 30 mM) significantly influenced the morphology, physiology and yield-related attributes. Salt stress remarkably increased the concentration of sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) in different organs of pearl millet plants. This led to increase the enhancement of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content and caused severe oxidative damage by augmenting the activities of antioxidant enzymes. The obvious decrease in plant growth, height, dry biomass of root and shoot, chlorophylls and carotenoid contents was observed in salt-stressed plants which ultimately reduced the yield of plants. The AgNPs remarkably improved the plant growth by reducing oxidative stress and Na and Cl uptake by salt-stressed plants. The AgNPs were also found to maintain the ionic balance of cell (Na⁺, K⁺ and Na⁺/K⁺ ratio). The AgNPs improved the superoxide dismutase, catalase activities and decreased the peroxidase activity while reduced the H₂O₂ and MDA contents in plants under salt stress. Overall, AgNPs increased the plant height, yield, and photosynthesis of salt-stressed plants in a dose-additive manner.

Amelioration of salt induced toxicity in pearl millet by seed priming with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs): The oxidative damage, antioxidant enzymes and ions uptake are major determinants of salt tolerant capacity

Abiotic stresses in plants reduce crop growth and productivity. Nanoparticles (NPs) are effectively involved in the physiochemical processes of crop plants, especially under the abiotic stresses; whereas, less information is available regarding the role of AgNPs in salt-stressed plants. Therefore, in the current study, we investigated the effects of seed priming with commercially available silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (size range between 50 and 100 nm) on plant morphology, physiology, and antioxidant defence system of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) under different concentrations of salt stress (0, 120 and 150 mM NaCl). The seed priming with AgNPs at different levels (0, 10, 20 and 30 mM) mitigated the adverse impacts of salt stress and improved plant growth and defence system. The results demonstrated that salt-stressed plants had restricted growth and a noticeable decline in fresh and dry weight. Salt stress enhanced the oxidative damage by excessive production of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in pearl millet leaves. However, seed priming with AgNPs significantly improved the plant height growth related attributes, relative water content, proline contents and ultimately fresh and dry weight at 20 mM AgNPs alone or with salt stress. The AgNPs reduced the oxidative damage by improving antioxidant enzyme activities in the pearl millet leaves under salt stress. Furthermore, sodium (Na⁺) and Na⁺/K⁺ ratio was decreased and potassium (K⁺) increased by NPs, and the interactive effects between salt and AgNPs significantly impacted the total phenolic and flavonoid content in pearl millet. It was concluded that seed priming with AgNPs could enhance salinity tolerance in crop plants by enhancing physiological and biochemical responses. This might boost global crop production in salt-degraded lands.

Effect of swine biogas slurry application on soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) content and fluorescence characteristics

The application of biogas slurry as an organic fertilizer is a promising method for utilizing breeding manure wastewater. At present, the impact of biogas slurry on the properties of organic matter in soil is not clear. In this study, a pot experiment in which chemical fertilizers were replaced with biogas slurry from a swine farm was performed. The fluorescence spectra combined with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to explore the influence of biogas slurry on the protein and humic substance contents in the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil. The results showed that there were two proteins (component 3 (C3) and component 4 (C4)) and two humic substances ( component 1 (C1) and component 2 (C2)) in the DOM of the experimental soil. The application of swine biogas slurry can significantly increase the content of DOM in soil, but the increase was weakened with extended time. Compared with the CKA, the biogas slurry significantly increased the C1, C2, C3 and C4 contents in the initial stage by 116.17%, 76.41%, 578.71% and 278.13%, respectively. Within 28 days of planting corn, proteins with simple molecular structure in the DOM in the soil began to be transformed into humic substances with high molecular weight and more complex molecular structures. On the 60th day, the contents of C1 and C2 in the DOM of the treated treatments soil increased by 13.72%-34.40% and 5.05%-17.78% respectively, and tyrosine content decreased by 90.11%-94.41%. This study provides a new perspective on the effects of biogas slurry application on soil properties and sustainable utilization of soil.

Manure storage operations mitigate nutrient losses and their products can sustain soil fertility and enhance wheat productivity

Livestock manure is a valuable source of nutrients for plants. However, poor handling practices during storage resulted in nutrient losses from the manure and decrement in its nitrogen (N) fertilizer value. We explored the influence of divergent storage methods on manure chemical composition, carbon (C) and N losses to the environment as well as fertilizer value of storage products after their application to the wheat. Fresh buffalo manure (FM) was subjected to different storage operations for a period of ∼6 months, (i) fermentation by covering with a plastic sheet (CM) (ii) placed under the roof (RM) (iii) heap was unturned (SM) to remain stacked at an open space and (iv) manure heap turned monthly (TM) to make compost. During storage, 8, 24, 45 and 46% of the initial N_total was lost from CM, RM, SM, and TM, respectively. The respective C losses from these treatments were 16, 34, 47 and 44% of the initial C content. After stored manures application to the wheat crop, mineral N in the soil remained 27% higher in CM (14.1 vs. 11.1 kg ha^-1) and 3% (10.8 vs. 11.1 kg ha^-1) lower in SM compared to FM treatment. In contrast, microbial biomass C and N was 35 (509 vs.782 mg C kg^-1 soil) and 25% (278 vs.370 mg N kg^-1 soil) lower in CM than FM treatment, respectively indicating lower N immobilization of CM in the soil. These findings could result in the highest grain yield (5166 kg ha^-1) and N uptake (117 kg ha^-1) in CM and the lowest in SM treatments (3105 and 61 kg ha^-1, respectively). Similarly, wheat crop recovered 44, 15 and 13% N from CM, TM and SM, respectively. Hence, management operations play a critical role in conserving N during storage phase and after stored manure application to the field. Among the studied operations, storing animal manure under an impermeable plastic sheet is a much better and cheaper option for decreasing N losses during storage and improving wheat yield when incorporated into the soil. Therefore, by adopting this manure storage technique, farmers can improve the agro-environmental value of animal manure in Pakistan.
