Development of human health ambient water quality criteria of 12 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and risk assessment in China

Dietary exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-contaminated Talinum Triangulare grown along polluted river

The research aims to evaluate the source, dispersion, and human health risk assessment of PAH-contaminated Talinum Triangulare grown along the polluted Ikpoba River. The freeze-dried vegetables were sonicated with dichloromethane for an hour and then concentrated using a rotary evaporator. The extract was purified using a glass column with anhydrous Na2SO4 and silica gel and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The distribution of the contaminants showed that Pyrene < Benzo(a)anthracene ≤ Fluorene < Phenathrene ≤ Naphthalene ≤ Acenaphthene < Anthracene ≤ Acenaphthylene, while Pyrene < Benzo(a)anthracene < Fluorene < Phenathrene < Acenaphthalene ≤ Naphthalene < Anthracene < Acenaphthylene in wet and dry periods, respectively. The average ∑8 PAHs was 0.85 mg/kg and 0.75 mg/kg in wet and dry periods, respectively, and showed a decrease of 17.64% from wet to dry periods. The daily average dose revealed that the infant male and the adult female consumed the least and highest doses of T. Triangulare (TT), respectively. Furthermore, the hazard quotient and hazard index were < 1 for all the target groups, with adult females having higher values in both seasons. However, the incremental life cancer risk of the target group was between potential and high-potential cancer risk, with adolescent males and adult females more prone to low and high cancer risk, respectively. The isomer ratio and multivariate statistics revealed the sources of the PAH-contaminated TT to be more from pyrolysis.

Interference of two typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on the induced anti-grazing defense of Tetradesmus obliquus

Anthropogenic emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) cause severe ecological impacts by contaminating natural water bodies, affecting various biological groups, and altering interspecies relationships and ecological functions. This study examined the effects of two typical PAHs, phenanthrene (Phe) and naphthalene (Nap), on the anti-grazing defense mechanisms of Tetradesmus obliquus, a primary producer in freshwater food chains. Four non-lethal concentrations (0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 mg L-1) of Phe and Nap were tested and the population growth, photosynthetic capacity, pigment content, and morphological defense of T. obliquus were analyzed. The results indicated that Phe and Nap inhibited both the growth rate and formation of defensive colonies of T. obliquus induced by Daphnia grazing cues, and the inhibition ratio increased with concentration. Phe and Nap significantly shortened the defense colony formation time of T. obliquus. Phe and Nap significantly suppressed photosynthesis in the early stages; however, the photosynthetic efficiency recovered over time. These findings highlight the high sensitivity of grazing-induced colony formation in T. obliquus to Phe and Nap at non-lethal concentrations, which could affect the interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton in aquatic ecosystems. Our study underscores the influence of Phe and Nap on the defense mechanisms of phytoplankton and the consequential effects on ecological interactions within freshwater ecosystems, providing insight into the complex impacts of pollutants on phytoplankton-zooplankton relationships. Therefore, it is necessary to consider interspecific interactions when assessing the potential negative effects of environmental pollutants on aquatic ecosystems.

Predicted no-effect concentration for eight PAHs and their ecological risks in seven major river systems of China

The initial step in the assessment of the ecological risk of pollutants is to determine the predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC). However, ecological risk assessments of eight carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA), methylcholanthrene (MCA), benzo(a)anthracene (BaA), chrysene (CHR), benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF), benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene (DBA), are rarely conducted due to the lack of their PNECs based on test data. In this study, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models and interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) models were combined to predict the acute toxicity of these eight target PHAs. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov analysis for species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) of native and all species was conducted. There was no significant difference between the predictions for native Chinese species and the predictions for all species by the QSAR-ICE models. In addition, the feasibility of the QSAR-ICE models was demonstrated by comparing the SSD curves constructed by measured toxicity data of BaP and those predicted by the QSAR-ICE models. The PNECs of the eight PAHs were estimated based on the SSDs and acute to chronic ratio (ACR) method; these data were 0.071 μg/L, 0.033 μg/L, 0.049 μg/L, 0.114 μg/L, 0.019 μg/L, 0.021 μg/L, 0.038 μg/L and 0.054 μg/L for DMBA, DBA, BaP, MCA, BaA, CHR, BbF, BkF, respectively. The higher PNECs of the alkylated PAHs suggested their lower ecological risks. Based on the mixed risk quotient (mRQ) of PAHs through the concentration addition (CA) model, high ecological risk watersheds, such as the Songhua River (mRQ = 1.95), the Liao River (mRQ = 4.59), and the Huai River (mRQ = 1.93), were identified.

Optimized Derivation of Predicted No-Effect Concentrations (PNECs) for Eight Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) Using HC10 Based on Acute Toxicity Data

For persistent organic pollutants, a concern of environmental supervision, predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) are often used in ecological risk assessment, which is commonly derived from the hazardous concentration of 5% (HC₅) of the species sensitivity distribution (SSD). To address the problem of a lack of toxicity data, the objectives of this study are to propose and apply two improvement ideas for SSD application, taking polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as an example: whether the chronic PNEC can be derived from the acute SSD curve; whether the PNEC may be calculated by HC₁₀ to avoid solely statistical extrapolation. In this study, the acute SSD curves for eight PAHs and the chronic SSD curves for three PAHs were constructed. The quantity relationship of HC₅s between the acute and chronic SSD curves was explored, and the value of the assessment factor when using HC₁₀ to calculate PNEC was derived. The results showed that, for PAHs, the chronic PNEC can be estimated by multiplying the acute PNEC by 0.1, and the value of the assessment factor corresponding to HC₁₀ is 10. For acenaphthene, anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, fluoranthene, fluorene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene, the chronic PNECs based on the acute HC₁₀s were 0.8120, 0.008925, 0.005202, 0.07602, 2.328, 12.75, 0.5731, and 0.05360 μg/L, respectively.

QSAR-QSIIR-based prediction of bioconcentration factor using machine learning and preliminary application

Bioconcentration factor (BCF) is one of the important parameters for developing human health ambient water quality criteria (HHAWQC) for chemical pollutants. Traditional experimental method to obtain BCF is time-consuming and costly. Therefore, prediction of BCF by modeling has attracted much attention. QSAR (Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship) model based on molecular descriptor is often used to predict BCF, however, in order to improve the accuracy of prediction, previous models are only applicable for prediction for a single category of substance and a single species, and cannot meet the needs of BCF prediction of pollutants lacing toxicity data. In this study, optimized 17 traditional molecular descriptor and five kinds of bioactivity descriptor were selected from more than 200 molecular descriptor and 25 kinds of biological activity descriptors. A QSAR-QSIIR (Quantitative Structure In vitro-In vivo Relationship) model suitable for multiple chemical substances and whole species is constructed by using optimized 4-MLP machine learning algorithm with selected molecular and bioactivity descriptors. The constructed model significantly improves the prediction accuracy of BCF. The R² of verification set and test set are 0.8575 and 0.7924, respectively, and the difference between predicted BCF and measured BCF is mostly less than 1.5 times. Then, BCF of BTEX in Chinese common aquatic products is predicted using the constructed QSAR-QSIIR model, and the HHAWQC of BTEX in China are derived using the predicted BCF, which provides a valuable reference for establishment of China's BTEX water quality standards.

Residues, potential source and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water of the East Liao River, Jilin Province, China

The environmental risks posed by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the diversity of their anthropogenic origins make them a global issue. Therefore, it is of utmost significance for protecting the aquatic environment and the growth of neighboring populations to identify their possible origins and ecological risk. Here, we detail the contamination profiles of 15 PAHs found in the East Liao River's surface waters in Jilin Province and use the receptor model Absolute Principal Component Analysis - Multiple Linear Regression (APCS-MLR) and diagnostic ratios method to identify the primary potential sources of pollution. Based on the natural hazard risk formation theory (NHRFT), an ecological risk assessment (ERA) model for PAHs in the East Liao River was developed. The method assesses the ecological risk status of PAHs by integrating the risk quotient (RQ) approach and the DPSIRM (driving force, pressure, state, impact, response, management) conceptual framework. Total concentrations in the surface water body were between 396.42 and 624.06 ng/L, with an average of 436.99 ng/L. The source research revealed that coal, biomass, and traffic emission sources are the most likely PAH contributors to the East Liao River. The ERA found that the majority of the sites' locations of the study were at low risk for PAHs in surface water bodies (30.7 % and 32.2 %, respectively), while only a tiny percentage of sites were at high or very high risk (1.8 % and 13.6 %). The study results provide theoretical support for the East Liao River's ecological, environmental protection, and policy formulation.

Distribution, sources, and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water in the coal mining area of northern Shaanxi, China

This study investigated the spatial distribution, pollution source, and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Kuye River, which is a typical river in the mining area of China, 16 priority PAHs were quantitatively detected at 59 sampling sites by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-fluorescence detector. The results showed that the ∑PAHs concentrations in the Kuye River were in the range of 50.06-278.16 ng/L. The PAHs monomer concentrations were in the range 0-121.22 ng/L, of which chrysene had the highest average concentration (36.58 ng/L), followed by benzo[a]anthracene and phenanthrene. In addition, the 4-ring PAHs showed the highest relative abundance in the 59 samples, ranging from 38.59 to 70.85%. Moreover, the highest concentrations of PAHs were mainly observed in coal mining, industrial, and densely populated areas. On the other hand, according to the diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis, it can be concluded that coking/petroleum sources, coal combustion, vehicle emission, and fuel-wood combustion contributed to the PAHs concentrations in the Kuye River by 37.91%, 36.31%, 13.93%, and 11.85%, respectively. In addition, the results of the ecological risk assessment indicated that benzo[a]anthracene had a high ecological risk. Among the 59 sampling sites, only 12 belong to low ecological risk areas, and others were at medium to high ecological risks. The current study provides data support and a theoretical basis to effectively manage pollution sources and ecological environment treatment in mining areas.

Review on carbon-based adsorbents from organic feedstocks for removal of organic contaminants from oil and gas industry process water: Production, adsorption performance and research gaps

Large amounts of process water with considerable concentrations of recalcitrant organic contaminants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), phenolic compounds (PCs), and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), are generated by several segments of oil and gas industries. These segments include refineries, hydraulic fracturing (HF), and produced waters from the extraction of shale gas (SGPW), coalbed methane (CBMPW) and oil sands (OSPW). In fact, the concentration of PCs and PAHs in process water from refinery can reach 855 and 742 mg L^-1, respectively. SGPW can contain BTEX at concentrations as high as 778 mg L^-1. Adsorption can effectively target those organic compounds for the remediation of the process water by applying carbon-based adsorbents generated from organic feedstocks. Such organic feedstocks usually come from organic waste materials that would otherwise be conventionally disposed of. The objective of this review paper is to cover the scientific progress in the studies of carbon-based adsorbents from organic feedstocks that were successfully applied for the removal of organic contaminants PAHs, PCs, and BTEX. The contributions of this review paper include the important aspects of (i) production and characterization of carbon-based adsorbents to enhance the efficiency of organic contaminant adsorption, (ii) adsorption properties and mechanisms associated with the engineered adsorbent and expected for certain pollutants, and (iii) research gaps in the field, which could be a guidance for future studies. In terms of production and characterization of materials, standalone pyrolysis or hybrid procedures (pyrolysis associated with chemical activation methods) are the most applied techniques, yielding high surface area and other surface properties that are crucial to the adsorption of organic contaminants. The adsorption of organic compounds on carbonaceous materials performed well at wide range of pH and temperatures and this is desirable considering the pH of process waters. The mechanisms are frequently pore filling, hydrogen bonding, π-π, hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, and same precursor material can present more than one adsorption mechanism, which can be beneficial to target more than one organic contaminant. Research gaps include the evaluation of engineered adsorbents in terms of competitive adsorption, application of adsorbents in oil and gas industry process water, adsorbent regeneration and reuse studies, and pilot or full-scale applications.

Occurrence, health risk assessment and water quality criteria derivation of six personal care products (PCPs) in Huangpu River, China

Personal care products (PCPs) have shown adverse health effects on humans. However, their health risk associated with fish consumption and relevant water quality criteria are still not well documented. This study investigated the occurrence and health risk of six PCPs (triclosan, bisphenol-A, and four commonly used organic ultraviolet (UV) filters, i.e., homosalate (HMS), 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC), oxybenzone (BP-3), and octocrylene (OC)). River water and three trophic levels of fish species were collected from Huangpu River in Shanghai. The concentration range of the six PCPs were 1.48-89.76 ng/L in water and 0.40-10.75 ng/g dry weight in fish. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) of the PCPs indicated that consuming these fish would not pose non-carcinogenic risks. The maximum allowable fish consumption rates ranged from 85 to 1760 and 155 to 3230 meals per month for children and adults, respectively. As to the four organic UV filters, it is the first time to report the fish consumption advisories. Finally, the human health ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) values of HMS, 4-MBC, BP-3, OC, TCS, and BPA (i.e., 0.1218, 0.7311, 0.3494, 0.0477, 235.8, and 154.7 μg/L, respectively) were proposed, and they can serve as a valuable technical reference for global development and revision of aquatic environmental quality standards for these emerging contaminants.

A review on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons distribution in freshwater ecosystems and their toxicity to benthic fauna

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic compounds, found ubiquitously in all environmental compartments. PAHs are considered hazardous pollutants, being of concern to both the environmental and human health. In the aquatic environment, PAHs tend to accumulate in the sediment due to their high hydrophobicity, and thus sediments can be considered their ultimate sink. Concurrently, sediments comprise important habitats for benthic species. This raises concern over the toxic effects of PAHs to benthic communities. Despite PAHs have been the subject of several reviews, their toxicity to freshwater benthic species has not been comprehensively discussed. This review aimed to provide an overview on PAHs distribution in freshwater environments and on their toxicity to benthic fauna species. The distribution of PAHs between sediments and the overlying water column, given by the sediment-water partition coefficient, revealed that PAHs concentrations were 2 to 4 orders of magnitude higher in sediments than in water. The sediment-water partition coefficient was positively correlated to PAHs hydrophobicity. Toxicity of PAHs to benthic fauna was addressed through Species Sensitivity Distributions. The derived hazardous concentration for 5% of the species (HC₅) decreased as follows: NAP (376 μg L^-1) > PHE > PYR > FLT > ANT (0.854 μg L^-1), varying by 3 orders of magnitude. The hazardous concentrations (HC₅) to benthic species were inversely correlated to the hydrophobicity of the individual PAHs. These findings are pertinent for environmental risk assessment of these compounds. This review also identified future challenges regarding the environmental toxicity of PAHs to freshwater benthic communities, namely the need for updating the PAHs priority list and the importance of comprehensively and more realistically assess the toxicity of PAHs in combination with other stressors, both chemical and climate-related.

Apoptosis and blood-testis barrier disruption during male reproductive dysfunction induced by PAHs of different molecular weights

The association between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and male reproductive dysfunction has attracted increasing attention. The purpose of this study was to compare the male reproductive toxicity of multiple PAHs and to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms. TM4 cells (mouse testicular Sertoli cells, SCs) were treated with benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), pyrene (Py), fluoranthene (Fl) and phenanthrene (Phe) (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 50, or 100 μM) for varying time points (4, 12, 24, or 48 h), and male C57BL/6 mice were administered BaP and Py (0, 10, 50, or 100 mg/kg body weight) for 14 days based on the cell experimental results. Histopathological examination, western blotting, ELISA, biochemical assays, RT-PCR, flow cytometry, JC-1 staining and trans-epithelium electrical resistance (TEER) measurements were used to assess apoptosis, blood-testis barrier (BTB) integrity, intracellular calcium ([Ca²⁺]_i) concentrations and oxidative stress (OS). The results revealed that the mRNA levels and enzymatic activities of CYP450 and GST family members; levels of ROS, MDA, cleaved caspase 3 (c-caspase 3), caspase 9, Bax, and cytochrome C (CytC); and numbers of TUNEL-positive cells were significantly increased by BaP and Py, while levels of AhR, GSH, SOD, CAT, Bcl-2 and ΔΨm were decreased. Additionally, BaP and Py notably interfered with tight junctions (TJs) and adherens junctions (AJs) in the BTB. Intriguingly, BaP, but not Py, induced [Ca²⁺]_i overload and gap junction (GJ) destruction. There was no dramatic effect of Fl and/or Phe on any of the above parameters except that slight cytotoxicity was observed with higher doses of Fl. Collectively, these findings showed that BaP and Py elicited SC apoptosis and BTB disruption involving mitochondrial dysfunction and OS, but [Ca²⁺]_i fluctuation and GJ injury were only observed with BaP-induced reproductive toxicity. The male reproductive toxicity of the selected PAHs was ranked in the order of BaP > Py > Fl > Phe.

Deriving convincing human health ambient water quality criteria for benzo[a]pyrene and providing basis for the water quality management: The impacts of national bioaccumulation factors and probabilistic modeling

Science-based water quality criteria are the cornerstone of water quality standards. This paper improved the methodology for the derivation of human health water quality criteria (HHWQC) and applied it for benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) to provide a scientific basis for the management of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface waters. First, the national bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) for BaP were derived using field-measured BAFs and field-measured biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) across China, respectively, which results were comparable and demonstrated the reliability of the obtained national BAFs for BaP. The HHWQC for BaP derived using the probabilistic approach were 3.98-4.70 ng/L and were comparable with those derived by the deterministic approach, suggesting the accuracy of derived HHWQC for BaP. Through the probabilistic approach, the probability distributions of lifetime incremental cancer risk from BaP in water were provided and the consumption rates of aquatic products at trophic level 2 and 3 were identified as factors influencing risks of BaP significantly. The derived HHWQC for BaP in China are approximately 33-36 times higher than those in the United States because of the high national BAFs and cancer slope factor of BaP used for the United States. In addition, the recommended HHWQC for BaP conform to the situation in China and are approximately 1.5 times higher than the standard value of BaP in the current National Surface Water Quality Standard (GB 3838-2002) in China (2.80 ng/L), which will play an important role in the amendment of National Surface Water Quality Standard in the future. Approximately 36% of the studied surface freshwater in China contains BaP with levels exceeding the recommended HHWQC, suggesting the pollution of BaP in surface freshwater is severe and needs to be given more attention. This study is significant for the scientific development of HHWQC worldwide and the management of pollutants in water.

Profiling of seasonal variation in and cancer risk assessment of benzo(a)pyrene and heavy metals in drinking water from Kirkuk city, Iraq

Water samples at 13 sites were analyzed to evaluate heavy metals (cobalt, lead, manganese, copper) and benzo(a)pyrene using 2 methods of analysis (high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits). The Lesser Zap River is the main tributary of the Tigris and is used as a main source of drinking water in Kirkuk city through the General Kirkuk project. Risk evaluation for benzo(a)pyrene and lead in water samples was accomplished by Monte Carlo simulation. The highest concentrations of B(a)P were recorded at sites S7 and S5, with levels of 0.192 and 0.122 µg L^-1 detected by HPLC and ELISA, respectively. The WHO guidelines for benzo[a]pyrene in drinking water recommend 0.7 µg L ^-1, and none of the samples surpassed this level; moreover, B(a)P levels exceeded EPA standards in 2014 (0.01 µg L^-1), particularly when the liquid-liquid extraction method with HPLC was used. Carcinogenic risks for human adults and children exist and are highest during the rainy season as compared with the carcinogenic risk during the dry season and risks for children exceed those of adults. This indicates that the 2^nd round of sampling (winter season) harbors more carcinogenic risk than the 1^st round of sampling (dry season).

A review of the in-situ capping amendments and modeling approaches for the remediation of contaminated marine sediments

Contaminated sediments can pose long-term risks to human beings and ecosystems as they accumulate inorganic and organic contaminants becoming a sink and source of pollution. Compared to ex-situ technologies (i.e., dredging activities and off site treatments), in-situ capping (ISC) intends to minimize contaminated sediment mobilization and impact into the water column whilst treating contamination. Literature shows that numerous types of ISC amendments in presence of both organic and inorganic pollutants are investigated, although a few are contributions whose experiments have been designed and conducted with a view to future engineering. Against this background of shortcomings, this review paper intends to investigate ISC reliability, applicability and its long-term effectiveness, by also comparing reactive and physical ISCs. Additionally, an examination of the main numerical simulations applied to ISC technology was carried out. We found that activated carbon and organoclay resulted the most studied amendments for organically contaminated sediment, whereas biochar, clay minerals, and industrial-by products were more employed in presence of sediment contaminated by metal(loids). There is no better ISC system in absolute terms, since technological performance depends on many factors and only a few experimental investigations included a long-term modeling phase to predict ISC long-term efficiency. Most of numerical models included simplified transport equations based on diffusion and adsorption, and the goodness of fitting between experimental and modeled data was not always computed. The review finally discusses new research directions such as the need for long-term applications on field-scale and cap effectiveness in presence of site-specific tidal forces and currents.

Health risk assessment and development of human health ambient water quality criteria for PBDEs in China

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are not only a class of highly efficient brominated flame retardants (BFRs) but also a class of typical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are persistent and widely distributed in various environmental media. This study examined the concentrations of PBDEs in five environmental media (water, soil, air, dust, and food) and two human body media (human milk and blood) in China from 2010 to 2020. In addition, this study conducted multi-pathway exposure health risk assessments of populations of different ages in urban, rural, key regions, and industrial factories using the Monte-Carlo simulation. Finally, the human health ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) of eight PBDEs were derived using Chinese exposure parameters and bioaccumulation factors (BAFs). The results showed that the eastern and southeastern coastal regions of China were heavily polluted by PBDEs, and the variation trends of the ΣPBDEs concentrations in the different exposure media were not consistent. PBDEs did not pose a risk to urban and rural residents in ordinary regions, but the hazard indexes (HIs) for residents in key regions and occupational workers exceeded the safety threshold. Dust exposure was the primary exposure pathway for urban and rural residents in ordinary regions, but for residents in key regions and occupational workers, dietary exposure was the primary exposure pathway. BDE-209 was found to be the most serious individual PBDE congener in China. The following human health AWQC values of the PBDEs were derived: drinking water exposure: 0.233-65.2 μg·L^-1; and drinking water and aquatic products exposure: 8.51 × 10^-4-1.10 μg·L^-1.

Aquatic life criteria & human health ambient water quality criteria derivations and probabilistic risk assessments of 7 benzenes in China

The benzenes have attracted worldwide attention due to their high biological toxicity in the environment. In this study, using species sensitivity distribution method to derive the aquatic life criteria of 7 benzenes (carbazole, 1,3-Dichlorobenzene, 1,4-Dichlorobenzene, 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene, phenol, 2,4-Dichlorophenol and nitrobenzene), then risk quotient method (RQ), potentially affected fraction (PAF) method and joint probability curve (JPC) method were applied for multilevel ecological risk assessment for 7 benzenes in Tai Lake Basin. In addition, the human health ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) of 7 benzenes were derived according to USEPA guidelines, and the probability distributions of human health AWQC for 7 benzenes in China were simulated by Monte Carlo simulation combined with crystal ball software. Finally, the health risks of 7 benzenes in Tai Lake were assessed by RQ method assisted by Monte Carlo simulation. The results showed that nitrobenzene had the maximum aquatic life criteria value, followed by phenol, chlorobenzenes, 2,4-Dichlorophenol and carbazole. All recommended human health AWQC values of 7 benzenes were found at a position of 27th-55th percentiles in the output criteria distributions, indicating that recommended national human health AWQC values could provide effective protection for most of the population in China. Furthermore, the consumption of aquatic products was found to be the most influential parameter of human health AWQC for benzenes with higher Kow values. The risk assessments showed that noncarcinogenic 2,4-Dichlorophenol had potential ecological risk, carcinogenic carbazole and 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene had significant human health risk in Tai Lake.

Water quality criteria for the protection of human health of 15 toxic metals and their human risk in surface water, China

In the absence of water quality criteria (WQC) support for the current water quality standard (WQS), systematic WQC studies have been carried out in recent years in China. WQC for the protection of human health is established to reflect long-term consumption safety of aquatic products and water. Human health WQC for 15 toxic metals and metalloids based on exposure factors of the Chinese population and 40 field bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were developed and analyzed in this study. Moreover, age-specific (age 2-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-14, 15-17, and adult) and region-specific (east, central and west China) WQC were analyzed to better understanding of the impact of specific parameter values on WQC. Human health WQC with consumption of fishes and water, consumption of fishes only, and consumption of water only were derived separately. WQC with consumption of water and organism for Hg, Cd, As, Sb, Se, Zn, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Mn, Sn, Ba, and Sr were 0.0264, 0.710, 0.827, 3.48, 22.1, 25.7, 32.2, 32.9, 35.5, 41.8, 72.1, 97.1, 206 and 2.20 × 10³ μg/L, and were 13.3 and 6.67 × 10³ μg/L for Cr(VI) and Cr(III) with consumption of water only. Comparison of age-specific and region-specific WQC showed that the protection for a specific population should be considered in the development of WQC and WQS, as well as cancer effect for carcinogenic metals. Health risk analysis showed that Cd, Cu, Zn, As, Hg and Mn average concentrations in 7, 5, 9, 22, 11 and 5 provinces exceeded the WQC values with consumption of water and aquatic product, showing potential long-term health risk (HQ ≥ 1) to the local population. Therefore, health risks posed by these metals from dietary intake related to surface water should be paying more attention.

Spatial distribution of fine and coarse particulate matter during a southwest monsoon in Peninsular Malaysia

This study aimed to determine the spatial distribution of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ collected in four regions (North, Central, South and East Coast) of Peninsular Malaysia during the southwest monsoon. Concurrent measurements of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ were performed using a high volume sampler (HVS) for 24 h (August to September 2018) collecting a total of 104 samples. All samples were then analysed for water soluble inorganic ions (WSII) using ion chromatography, trace metals using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The results showed that the highest average PM_2.5 concentration during the sampling campaign was in the North region (33.2 ± 5.3 μg m^-3) while for PM₁₀ the highest was in the Central region (38.6 ± 7.70 μg m^-3). WSII recorded contributions of 22% for PM_2.5 and 20% for PM₁₀ mass, with SO₄^2- the most abundant species with average concentrations of 1.83 ± 0.42 μg m^-3 (PM_2.5) and 2.19 ± 0.27 μg m^-3 (PM₁₀). Using a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, soil fertilizer (23%) was identified as the major source of PM_2.5 while industrial activity (25%) was identified as the major source of PM₁₀. Overall, the studied metals had hazard quotients (HQ) value of <1 indicating a very low risk of non-carcinogenic elements while the highest excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) was recorded for Cr VI in the South region with values of 8.4E-06 (PM_2.5) and 6.6E-05 (PM₁₀). The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) calculated from the PAH concentrations was within the acceptable range for all regions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in railway stations dust of the mega traffic hub city, central China: Human health risk and relationship with black carbon

Twenty dust samples collected from Wuchang and Wuhan Railway Stations, the biggest transport stations in the mega traffic hub city in Central China, were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to investigate the concentration, sources apportionment, and relationship with black carbon (BC) and assess the health risk. The results suggested that the concentrations of PAHs, BC and TOC in Wuhan Railway Station (WHRS) (PAHs = 5940 ± 1920 ng g^-1, BC = 53.2 ± 23.1 mg g^-1 and TOC = 80.7 ± 44.4) were twice higher than those in Wuchang Railway Station (WCRS) (PAHs = 2580 ± 1630 ng g^-1, BC = 20.4 ± 14.3 mg g^-1 and TOC = 33.9 ± 20.1 mg g^-1). Moreover, the 3 - and 4 - rings PAHs were major PAHs in railway station dust. The composition pattern of PAHs in these railway station dusts had a common characteristic with HMW-PAHs contribution. The results of source identification revealed that different local development features and energy consumption of trains would influence the sources of PAHs and BC. PAHs and BC were most likely related to industrial activities in WHRS. Coal and biomass combustion may influence the PAHs components and BC distribution in WCRS. Moreover, BC had played an important role in retaining PAHs in urban railway stations. Especially in WHRS, BC would more likely to absorb the high molecular weight PAHs, such as 4 -ring (p<0.05), 5 -ring (p<0.05) and 6 -ring (p<0.05) PAHs; while BC just played limited roles in the binding of volatile and semi-volatile organic pollutants, such as 2 -ring and 3 -ring PAHs. With the coexistence of BC and PAHs, passengers would face significant potential health risks by exposure to toxic dust in railway stations, especially for children. The cancer risk in WHRS was almost twice higher than that in WCRS, and it would tend to be stable by a semi-confined structure in the platform area.
