Toxic effects of bisphenol A and its analogues on cyanobacteria Anabaena variabilis and Microcystis aeruginosa

Assessment of potential environmental and human risks for Bisphenol AF contaminant

Bisphenol AF (BPAF) is found in high concentrations in aquatic environments due to the increased use of thermal paper and food packaging. However, there have been relatively few toxicological studies and potential risk assessments of BPAF. In this study, the risk quotient (RQ) and hazard quotient (HQ) of BPAF were derived to present the safety standards for environmental risk management and protection in lakes, rivers, bays, and Italian regions. We applied the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method based on the previous ecotoxicological data and the results of supplementary toxicity tests on BPAF. From the SSD curves, the hazardous concentration for 5 % of the species (HC5) values for the acute and chronic toxicity data were 464.75 µg/L and 3.59 µg/L, respectively, and the acute- and chronic-based predicted no-effect concentration were derived as 154.92 µg/L and 1.20 µg/L, respectively. The acute-based RQ (RQA)values of BPAF in all regions were negligible (RQ < 0.1). The chronic-based RQ (RQC) in the Xitang River (XR) and the Central Italy (CI) showed a considerably high ecological risk (12.77 and 1.29) and the Hangzhou Bay (0.21), the South and North Italy (0.79 and 0.27), and the Tamagawa River (0.13) had a medium ecological risk (0.1 < RQ < 1.0). However, the HQ values based on the tolerable daily intake for BPAF over all age groups in these regions was < 0.1, indicating the low health risk. Nonetheless, the result of this study indicates that BPAF contamination is serious in XR and CI, and their use and emissions require continuous monitoring.

Responses to phytoplankton community succession and expression of key functional genes in plateau lakes under 17β-estradiol interference

Steroid estrogens (SEs) have garnered global attention because of their potential hazards to human health and aquatic organisms at low concentrations (ng/L). The ecosystems of plateau freshwater lakes are fragile, the water lag time is long, and pollutants easily accumulate, making them more vulnerable to the impact of SEs. However, the knowledge of the impact of SEs on the growth and decomposition of phytoplankton communities in plateau lakes and the eutrophication process is limited. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of SEs exposure on dominant algal communities and the expression of typical algal functional genes in Erhai Lake using indoor simulations and molecular biological methods. The results showed that phytoplankton were sensitive to 17β-estradiol (E2β) pollution, with a concentration of 50, and 100 ng/L E2β exposure promoting the growth of cyanophyta and chlorophyta in the short term; this poses an ecological risk of inducing algal blooms. E2β of 1000 ng/L exposure led to cross-effects of estrogenic effects and toxicity, with most phytoplankton being inhibited. However, small filamentous cyanobacteria and diatoms exhibited greater tolerance; Melosira sp. even exhibited "low inhibition, high promotion" behavior. Exposure to E2β reduced the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H'), Pielou index (J), and the number of dominant algal species (S) in phytoplankton communities, leading to instability in community succession. E2β of 50 ng/L enhanced the expression levels of relevant functional genes, such as ftsH, psaB, atpB, and prx, related to Microcystis aeruginosa. E2β of 50 ng/L and 5 mg/L can promote the transcription of Microcystis toxins (MC) related genes (mcyA), leading to more MC production by algal cells.

Exploring BPA alternatives - Environmental levels and toxicity review

Bisphenol A alternatives are manufactured as potentially less harmful substitutes of bisphenol A (BPA) that offer similar functionality. These alternatives are already in the market, entering the environment and thus raising ecological concerns. However, it can be expected that levels of BPA alternatives will dominate in the future, they are limited information on their environmental safety. The EU PARC project highlights BPA alternatives as priority chemicals and consolidates information on BPA alternatives, with a focus on environmental relevance and on the identification of the research gaps. The review highlighted aspects and future perspectives. In brief, an extension of environmental monitoring is crucial, extending it to cover BPA alternatives to track their levels and facilitate the timely implementation of mitigation measures. The biological activity has been studied for BPA alternatives, but in a non-systematic way and prioritized a limited number of chemicals. For several BPA alternatives, the data has already provided substantial evidence regarding their potential harm to the environment. We stress the importance of conducting more comprehensive assessments that go beyond the traditional reproductive studies and focus on overlooked relevant endpoints. Future research should also consider mixture effects, realistic environmental concentrations, and the long-term consequences on biota and ecosystems.

Determination of nine bisphenol analogues in human urine by high-throughput solid-phase extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis

Bisphenol analogues (BPs) are a class of typical environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). This study aimed to establish a highly sensitive and high-throughput method utilizing 96-well solid-phase extraction (96-well SPE) in conjunction with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) employing multiple reaction monitoring (MRM), information-dependent acquisition (IDA), and enhanced product ion (EPI) scan modes for the identification and quantitative analysis of nine BPs in human urine. Urine samples were initially thawed to room temperature, followed by digestion using β-glucuronidase in an ammonium acetate buffer solution at 37 °C overnight. Subsequently, they were purified using 96-well SPE and finally analyzed by UHPLC-MS/MS. The limits of detection (LOD) for the nine BPs ranged from 0.05 μg∙kg-1 to 0.3 μg kg-1. Average recoveries fell within the range of 92.8 % to 111.7 %. Moreover, both the intra-day and inter-day precisions were satisfactory, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 2.2 % to 6.7 % and 3.5 % to 6.3 %, respectively. The targets in the samples exhibited a perfect match, with a purity fit value exceeding 70 % from the self-built library. The analytical method developed in this study demonstrates high accuracy and sensitivity. In addition, the MRM-IDA-EPI mode can effectively identifies the target BPs and prevents false positive detection of analytes in the urine.

Insight into the generation of toxic by-products during UV/H2O2 degradation of carbamazepine: Mechanisms, N-transformation and toxicity

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a widely used anticonvulsant drug that has been detected in aquatic environments. This study investigated the toxicity of its by-products (CBZ-BPs), which may surpass CBZ. Unlike the previous studies, this study offered a more systematic approach to identifying toxic BPs and inferring degradation pathways. Furthermore, quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to analyze CBZ-BP structures and degradation pathways. Evaluation of total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) mineralization rates, revealed carbon (C) greater susceptibility to mineralization compared with nitrogen (N). Furthermore, three rules were established for CBZ decarbonization and N removal during degradation, observing the transformation of aromatic compounds into aliphatic hydrocarbons and stable N-containing organic matter over time. Five potentially highly toxic BPs were screened from 14 identified BPs, with toxicity predictions guiding the selection of commercial standards for quantification and true toxicity testing. Additionally, BP207 emerged as the most toxic, supported by the predictive toxicity accumulation model (PTAM). Notably, highly toxic BPs feature an acridine structure, indicating its significant contribution to toxicity. These findings offered valuable insights into the degradation mechanisms of emerging contaminants and the biosafety of aquatic environments during deep oxidation.

Ultrasonic synthesis of magnetic covalent organic frameworks and application magnetic solid phase extraction for rapid adsorption of trace bisphenols in food samples

A simple ultrasonic synthesis strategy was developed for a novel magnetic covalent organic framework. Firstly, the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were encapsulated by imine-type COF, which generated by the Schiff reaction of 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triyl)-trianiline (TAPT) and tris(4-formylphenyl)-amine (TFPA) using ultrasonic synthesis method within 2 h. The synthesised nanocomposites showed a sizeable specific surface area, and high adsorption capacity. A fast, sensitive MSPE method with Fe3O4@TAPT-TFPA-COF as adsorbent for analysing bisphenol compounds was developed. This method's advantages were simple operation, short extraction time, and avoidance of the use of centrifugal equipment. The method validation indicate that this method exhibited superior linearity, and detection limits range between 0.33 and 0.60 μg L-1. The recoveries of BPs ranged from 74.7 % to 107.0 %, with relative standard deviations of less than 3.8 % in water, milk, vinegar, and soy sauce samples. The proposed method was successfully applied for extracting BPs in food samples.

Bisphenol a (BPA) aggravate the adverse effect on physiological and biochemical response in freshwater mussel potomida littoralis

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical compound extensively employed in plastic manufacturing, and this pollutant has been detected in diverse aquatic organisms, notably bivalves. In order to comprehend the ecological and toxicological consequences of BPA Bisphenol A in these organisms, it is essential to examine the physiological and biochemical effects and identify areas where our understanding is lacking. This knowledge is crucial for determining the environn ental threat posed by bisphenol A and assisting decision-makers in establishing the appropriate priorities. This investigation aimed to assess the impact of BPA on the biochemical and physiological parameters of the freshwater mussel Potomida littoralis. In a laboratory setting, mussels were subjected to two different levels of BPA (20 and 100 μg/L) for a duration of 21 days. Filtration rate was calculated from the clearance of neutral red, fed to mussels at different BPA concentrations. The mussel's filtration rate capacity declined as BPA exposure intensified, potentially due to the mussel's attempt to close its valves and minimize BPA absorption, thus preventing cellular damage. In the digestive gland tissue, key antioxidant and detoxification defenses, including catalase (CAT) activity, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, and levels of H2O2 and glutathione (GSH), were activated, particularly at the 100 μg/L BPA concentration. This activation helped protect against lipid damage at higher BPA concentrations. This study underscores the significance of preventing and regulating BPA release into the environment to avert detrimental consequences for aquatic ecosystems.

Repeated Exposure Enhanced Toxicity of Clarithromycin on Microcystis aeruginosa Versus Single Exposure through Photosynthesis, Oxidative Stress, and Energy Metabolism Shift

Antibiotics are being increasingly detected in aquatic environments, and their potential ecological risk is of great concern. However, most antibiotic toxicity studies involve single-exposure experiments. Herein, we studied the effects and mechanisms of repeated versus single clarithromycin (CLA) exposure on Microcystis aeruginosa. The 96 h effective concentration of CLA was 13.37 μg/L upon single exposure but it reduced to 6.90 μg/L upon repeated exposure. Single-exposure CLA inhibited algal photosynthesis by disrupting energy absorption, dissipation and trapping, reaction center activation, and electron transport, thereby inducing oxidative stress and ultrastructural damage. In addition, CLA upregulated glycolysis, pyruvate metabolism, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Repeated exposure caused stronger inhibition of algal growth via altering photosynthetic pigments, reaction center subunits biosynthesis, and electron transport, thereby inducing more substantial oxidative damage. Furthermore, repeated exposure reduced carbohydrate utilization by blocking the pentose phosphate pathway, consequently altering the characteristics of extracellular polymeric substances and eventually impairing the defense mechanisms of M. aeruginosa. Risk quotients calculated from repeated exposure were higher than 1, indicating significant ecological risks. This study elucidated the strong influence of repeated antibiotic exposure on algae, providing new insight into antibiotic risk assessment.

Growth inhibition, oxidative stress and characterisation of mortality in green algae under the influence of beta-blockers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Bisoprolol and ketoprofen are widely used pharmaceuticals in medical treatment hence these substances are occurring in wastewaters and in water environment. This research investigated the toxic effects of bisoprolol and ketoprofen on two microalgae taxa, Chlorella vulgaris and Desmodesmus armatus. The results showed that both drugs inhibited the growth of the species tested and induced a decrease in chlorophyll a content compared to controls. Ketoprofen turned out to be harmful to algae as the half maximal effective concentration (EC50) values (14 days) were 37.69 mg L-1 for C. vulgaris and 40.93 mg L-1 for D. armatus. On the other hand, for bisoprolol, the EC50 values were greater than the established NOEC, 100 mg L-1. Bisoprolol and ketoprofen induced oxidative stress in the tested microorganisms, as indicated by changes in the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Exposure to 100 mg L-1 of drugs significantly increased the activity of catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. Fluorescence microscopy showed that both medicaments changed the cells' morphology. There was atrophy of chlorophyll in the cells, moreover, dying multinuclear cells and cells without nuclei were observed. In addition, there were atrophic cells, namely cells that lacked nuclei and chlorophyll. Profile area analyses showed that bisoprolol and ketoprofen treated C. vulgaris cells were approximately 4 and 2 times greater compared to control ones. Our experimental findings highlight the ecotoxicological threats for aquatic primary producers from bisoprolol and ketoprofen and provide insight into the characteristics of their death.

Comprehensive analysis of bisphenol analogues in complex water using a group-targeting aptamer engineered by base mutation

Bisphenol analogues (BPs) are typical environmental hormones with endocrine-disrupting effects and reproductive toxicity requiring analysis and monitoring in complex aquatic environments. However, the presence of various co-existing contaminants makes the accurate determination of total BPs difficult. To address this challenge, there is a strong need to obtain a group-targeting binder to specifically detect a class of BPs. In this work, for the first time we have identified the group-targeting BPs-aptamer with similar affinities for multiple structurally and qualitatively similar BPs. Base mutations were introduced into an aptamer specific to bisphenol A (BPA) and utilized molecular docking calculations to identify a group-targeting aptamer capable of binding BPs, including BPA, bisphenol B (BPB), bisphenol E (BPE) and bisphenol F (BPF) with binding constants in the range of 2.0 × 106 ∼ 2.7 × 106 / M. In addition, an electrochemical aptamer-based sensor (aptasensor) was constructed for highly sensitive and comprehensive analysis of a class of BPs. This aptasensor demonstrated remarkable anti-interference performance against co-existing contaminants at concentrations up to 100-fold and achieved an impressive detection limit of 6.7 pM. This innovative approach of engineering a group-targeting BPs-aptamer is important for the comprehensive analysis of BPs, providing insights into identification and monitoring a class of pollutants.

Understanding the Risks of Diffusion of Cyanobacteria Toxins in Rivers, Lakes, and Potable Water

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, may be prevalent in our rivers and tap water. These minuscule bacteria can grow swiftly and form blooms in warm, nutrient-rich water. Toxins produced by cyanobacteria can pollute rivers and streams and harm the liver and nervous system in humans. This review highlights the properties of 25 toxin types produced by 12 different cyanobacteria genera. The review also covered strategies for reducing and controlling cyanobacteria issues. These include using physical or chemical treatments, cutting back on fertilizer input, algal lawn scrubbers, and antagonistic microorganisms for biocontrol. Micro-, nano- and ultrafiltration techniques could be used for the removal of internal and extracellular cyanotoxins, in addition to powdered or granular activated carbon, ozonation, sedimentation, ultraviolet radiation, potassium permanganate, free chlorine, and pre-treatment oxidation techniques. The efficiency of treatment techniques for removing intracellular and extracellular cyanotoxins is also demonstrated. These approaches aim to lessen the risks of cyanobacterial blooms and associated toxins. Effective management of cyanobacteria in water systems depends on early detection and quick action. Cyanobacteria cells and their toxins can be detected using microscopy, molecular methods, chromatography, and spectroscopy. Understanding the causes of blooms and the many ways for their detection and elimination will help the management of this crucial environmental issue.

Single and multispecies microalgae toxicological tests assessing the impact of several BPA analogues used by industry

BPA is a hazard for human and environmental health and recently BPA was added to the Candidate List of substances of very high concern by European Chemical Agency (ECHA). In accordance with this proposal, the authorities have encouraged the replacement of BPA by BPA analogues; however, little is known about the impact of these compounds on the environment. Due to this situation five BPA analogues (BPS, BPAP, BPAF, BPFL and BPC) were chosen in order to study their effects on marine primary producers. Three marine microalgae species (Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Tetraselmis suecica and Nannochloropsis gaditana) were selected for single and multispecies tests concerning the ecotoxicological effects of these BPA analogues. Microalgae were exposed to BPs over 72 h at different dosages (5, 20, 40, 80, 150 and 300 μM). Responses such as: growth, ROS production, cell complexity, cell size, autofluorescence of chlorophyll a, effective quantum yield of PSII and pigment concentrations were assessed at 24, 48 and 72 h. The results revealed that BPS and BPA showed lower toxicity to microalgae in comparison with BPFL > BPAF > BPAP and >BPC for the endpoints studied. N. gaditana was the least sensitive microalgae in comparison to P. tricornutum and T. suecica. However, a different trend was found in the multispecies tests where T. suecica dominated the microalgae community in relation to N. gaditana and P. tricornutum. The results of this work revealed for first time that present day BPA analogues are a threat and not a safe substitute for BPA in terms of the marine phytoplanktonic community. Therefore, the results of their impact on aquatic organisms should be shared.

Palladium-Copper Bimetallic Aerogel as New Modifier for Highly Sensitive Determination of Bisphenol A in Real Samples

In this study, a bimetallic palladium-copper aerogel was synthesized and used for modification of a graphite paste electrode (Pd-Cu/GPE), allowing the sensitive determination of bisphenol A (BPA). Different techniques, such as SEM, TEM, XPS, and AFM, were used for characterization of the Pd-Cu aerogel. To elucidate the properties of the Pd-Cu/GPE, the electrochemistry methods such as differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used. DPV measurements were conducted in phosphate electrolyte and buffer solution (0.2 M PBS, pH 5) at a potential range from 0.4 to 0.9 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The DPVs peaks currents increased linearly with BPA concentrations in the 0.04-85 and 85-305 µM ranges, with a limit of detection of 20 nM. The modified electrode was successfully used in real samples to determine BPA, and the results were compared to the standard HPLC method. The results showed that the Pd-Cu/GPE had good selectivity, stability, and sensitivity for BPA determination.

Polyisobutylenes with Controlled Molecular Weight and Chain-End Structure: Synthesis and Actual Applications

The polymerization of isobutylene allows us to obtain a wide spectrum of polyisobutylenes (PIBs) which differ in their molecular weight characteristics and the chemical structure of chain-end groups. The bulk of the PIBs manufactured worldwide are highly reactive polyisobutylenes (HRPIBs) with -C(Me)=CH2 end-groups and low-molecular weights (Mn < 5 kDa). HRPIBs are feedstocks that are in high demand in the manufacturing of additives for fuels and oils, adhesives, detergents, and other fine chemicals. In addition, HRPIBs and CMe2Cl-terminated PIBs are intensively studied with the aim of finding biomedical applications and for the purpose of developing new materials. Both chain control (molecular weight and dispersity) and chemoselectivity (formation of exo-olefinic or -CMe2Cl groups) should be achieved during polymerization. This review highlights the fundamental issues in the mechanisms of isobutylene polymerization and PIB analysis, examines actual catalytic approaches to PIBs, and describes recent studies on the functionalization and applications of HRPIBs and halogen-terminated PIBs.

Response of two cyanobacterial strains to non-biodegradable glitter particles

Microplastic pollution is a growing concern mainly in aquatic environments due to its deleterious effects. Some types of microplastics, such as glitter, remain overlooked. Glitter particles are artificial reflective microplastics used by different consumers within arts and handcraft products. In nature, glitter can physically affect phytoplankton by causing shade or acting as a sunlight-reflective surface, influencing primary production. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of five concentrations of non-biodegradable glitter particles in two bloom-forming cyanobacterial strains, Microcystis aeruginosa CENA508 (unicellular) and Nodularia spumigena CENA596 (filamentous). Cellular growth rate, estimated by optical density (OD), demonstrated that the applied highest glitter dosage decreases cyanobacterial growth rate with a more evident effect on M. aeruginosa CENA508. The cellular biovolume of N. spumigena CENA596 increased following the application of high concentrations of glitter. Still, no significant difference was detected in chlorophyll-a and carotenoids' contents for both strains. These results suggest that environmental concentrations of glitter, similar to the highest dosage tested (>200 mg _glitter L^-1), may negatively influence susceptible organisms of the aquatic ecosystems, as observed with M. aeruginosa CENA508 and N. spumigena CENA596.

Multi-immunoaffinity column for the simultaneous analysis of bisphenol A and its analogues in Chinese foods by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its four analogues have been receiving considerable attention owing to their potential endocrine disrupting effects. The European Food Safety Authority has proposed 0.04 ng/kg·body weight/day of thetemporary tolerable daily intake for BPA. Therefore, a more sensitive analytical method was urgently needed for the necessity of the risk reassessment of bisphenols (BPs). The matrix effect of Chinese foods is a challenge for the analysis of ultra-trace analytes due to the presence of various spices. A multi-immunoaffinity column (mIAC) was prepared for the purification of BPA, BPB, BPF, BPS, and BPAF in Chinese foods following ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry detection (UHLPC-MS/MS). The recoveries of each of BPs were ranged from 84.6% to 116.7%, and the intra-day precision and inter-day precision were ranged from 1.6% to 12.4%, and from 4.1% to 14.0%, respectively. This is the first report on the mIACs for simultaneous clean-up and analysis of BPs in complex Chinese foods.

Bisphenol A and its substitutes in the aquatic environment: Occurrence and toxicity assessment

Bisphenol A is classified as a high production volume chemical commonly used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins and thermal paper. The endocrine disrupting properties of this xenobiotic have led to the restriction and prohibition of its use in many consumer products. To date, many chemical compounds with a chemical structure similar to bisphenol A have been used in consumer products as its replacement. The ubiquitous occurrence of bisphenol A and its substitutes in the environment and their endocrine activity as well as adverse effects on aquatic organisms is a global concern, especially because many available literature reports show that many substitutes (e.g. bisphenol AF, bisphenol AP, bisphenol B, bisphenol C, bisphenol F, bisphenol G, bisphenol FL, tetrabromobisphenol A) exert adverse effects on aquatic organisms, similar to, or even stronger than bisphenol A. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the production, sources, occurrence and associated toxicity, as well as the endocrine activity of bisphenol A and its substitutes on aquatic species. The environmental levels and ecotoxicological data presented in this review allowed for a preliminary assessment and prediction of the risk of bisphenol A and its substitutes for aquatic organisms. Furthermore, the data collected in this paper highlight that several compounds applied in bisphenol A-free products are not safe alternatives and regulations regarding their use should be introduced.

Hematological changes, redox imbalance, and changes in Na+/K+-ATPase activity caused by bisphenol-A and the integrated biomarker responses in Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822)

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a plasticizer commonly used in the plastics industry to manufacture plastic materials. It is abundant in aquatic ecosystems, resulting in increased contamination and lower concentrations that may represent a significant threat to the aquatic system. Hence in the present study, an Indian major carp, Labeo rohita, was exposed to two different BPA concentrations (1 and 10 μg/L) for 30 days. Compared to control, the chronic effects resulted in significant alterations in red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cells (WBC) count. The exposure to BPA caused significant changes in antioxidant activity in gill, liver, and kidney tissues (inferred by catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase activity) in L. rohita. Regarding lipid peroxidation (LPO), we observed an increase in liver and kidney alteration, while LPO was noted in gill tissue compared to the control. Furthermore, increased Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase activity was observed in gills at the end of the 10th day and a gradual decrease at the end of the 30th day. These results indicated that exposure to BPA alters the RBC and WBC levels, antioxidant enzyme activity (gills, liver, and kidney), and Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase activity in the gill of L. rohita exposed to BPA (at 1 and 10 μg/L). Therefore, our findings will help us gain better insight into the toxicity of BPA in freshwater ichthyofauna.

Immobilized BiOCl0.75I0.25/g-C3N4 nanocomposites for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A in the presence of effluent organic matter

The BiOCl_0.75I_0.25/g-C₃N₄ nanosheet (BCI-CN) was successfully immobilized on polyolefin polyester fiber (PPF) through the hydrothermal method. The novel immobilized BiOCl_0.75I_0.25/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites (BCI-CN-PPF) were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy EDS, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) to confirm that BCI-CN was successfully immobilized on PPF with abundant oxygen vacancies reserved. Under simulated solar light irradiation, 100 % of bisphenol A (BPA) with an initial concentration of 10 mg·L^-1 was degraded by BCI-CN-PPF (0.2 g·L^-1 of BCI-CN immobilized) after 60 min. A similar photocatalytic efficiency of BPA was obtained in the presence of effluent organic matter (EfOM). The photocatalytic degradation of BPA was not affected by EfOM <5 mg-C/L. In comparison, the photocatalytic performance was considerably inhibited by EfOM with a concentration of 10 mg-C/L. Furthermore, photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals predominated in the photocatalytic degradation processes of BPA. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies of BPA and EfOM were 75.2 % and 50 % in the BCI-CN-PPF catalytic system. The BPA removal efficiency of 94.9 % was still achieved in the eighth cycle of repeated use. This study provides a promising immobilized nanocomposite with high photocatalytic activity and excellent recyclability and reusability for practical application in wastewater treatment.

Imidazole ionic liquid functionalized ZIF-67 molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography for analysis of bisphenol A

An effective method based on an imidazole ionic liquid functionalized ZIF-67 molecularly imprinted solid-phase extractant (ZIF-67@[Bmim][Br]@MIP) coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the separation/analysis of bisphenol A (BPA) was established. ZIF-67@[Bmim][Br]@MIP was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM and BET. Several important factors, such as pH, amount of extractant, extraction time, and types of eluents were investigated in detail. Under the optimal conditions, the linear range of the method was 0.01-20.00 μg mL^-1, the detection limit was 5.0 ng mL^-1, and the linear correlation was good (R² = 0.9994). The detection of BPA in mineral water bottles, milk cartons and milk tea cups proved that the method was simple and effective, and could be used to separate and analyze BPA in real samples.

Acute and Chronic Toxicity of Binary Mixtures of Bisphenol A and Heavy Metals

Bisphenol A (BPA) and heavy metals are widespread contaminants in the environment. However, the combined toxicities of these contaminants are still unknown. In this study, the bioluminescent bacteria Vibrio qinghaiensis Q67 was used to detect the single and combined toxicities of BPA and heavy metals, then the joint effects of these contaminants were evaluated. The results show that chronic toxicities of chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), and BPA were time−dependent; in fact, the acute toxicities of these contaminants were stronger than the chronic toxicities. Furthermore, the combined toxicities of BPA and heavy metals displayed BPA + Hg > BPA + Cr > BPA + As > BPA + Ni > BPA + Pb > BPA + Cd in the acute test and BPA + Hg > BPA + Cd > BPA + As > BPA + Cd in the chronic test, which suggested that the combined toxicity of BPA and Hg was stronger than that of other mixtures in acute as well as chronic tests. Additionally, both CA and IA models underestimated the toxicities of mixtures at low concentrations but overestimated them at high concentrations, which indicates that CA and IA models were not suitable to predict the toxicities of mixtures of BPA and heavy metals. Moreover, the joint effects of BPA and heavy metals mainly showed antagonism and additive in the context of acute exposure but synergism and additive in the context of chronic exposure. Indeed, the difference in the joint effects on acute and chronic exposure can be explained by the possibility that mixtures inhibited cell growth and luminescence in chronic cultivation. The chronic toxicity of the mixture should be considered if the mixture results in the inhibition of the growth of cells.

A mutispectroscopic study on the structure-affinity relationship of the interactions of bisphenol analogues with bovine serum albumin

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a recognized endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC), and its analogues also exert negative effects on health. The structure-affinity relationship between the structures of nine bisphenol (BP) analogues and the conformational changes of bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by various characterization methods and molecular docking. BPs including BPA and its analogues, bisphenol B (BPB), bisphenol C (BPC), bisphenol AP (BPAP), bisphenol M (BPM), bisphenol P (BPP), bisphenol Z (BPZ), diethylstilbestrol (DES) and dienestrol (DS) interacted with BSA. At the concentration of 3.85 × 10^-5 mol l^-1, DS was found to lead to 64% quenching, while BPAP, BPM and DES quenched 60%, 59% and 55% of BSA fluorescence, respectively. The values of ΔH (-19.31-135.42 kJ mol^-1) and ΔS (12.52-495.63 J mol^-1 K^-1) indicated that hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds played important roles in the binding process. The binding constants of DS (8.87 × 10⁴ l mol^-1), DES (3.05 × 10⁴ l mol^-1), BPAP (1.52 × 10⁴ l mol^-1), BPC (1.16 × 10⁴ l mol^-1) and BPM (1.10 × 10⁴ l mol^-1) to BSA were greater than that of BPA (1.18 × 10³ l mol^-1) to BSA, indicating that they may exert more negative effects than BPA. The molecular structure differences of these BPs partly affected their ability to bind to BSA. The binding constants of BPB/BPP to BSA were smaller due to the steric hindrance of ethyl and benzene ring. BPs with conjugated double bond structures (DS and DES) and benzene ring structures (BPM, BPP, BPAP) had a greater influence on the conformation of BSA.

Environmental estrogens in surface water and their interaction with microalgae: A review

Environmental estrogens (EEs) have received extensive attention because they interfere with biological endocrine and reproduction systems by mimicking, antagonizing, or otherwise affecting the actions of endogenous hormones. Additionally, harmful algal blooms have become a global problem in surface water. Microalgae, as an essential primary producer, is especially important for aquatic life and the entire ecosystem. The presence of EEs in surface water may be a potential promoting factor for algal blooms, and microalgae may have effects on the degradation of EEs. This review focuses on the distribution and pollution characteristics of EEs in global surface waters, effects of single and mixed EEs on microalgae regarding growth and toxin production, mechanisms of EEs on microalgae at the cellular and molecular level. The impacts of microalgae on EEs were also discussed. This review provides a risk assessment of EEs and identifies essential clues that will aid in formulating and revising the relevant standards of surface water regarding EEs, which is significant for ecosystems and human health.

Bisphenols' occurrence in bivalves as sentinel of environmental contamination

Bisphenols are massively used in several manufacture processes such that bisphenol A (BPA) is ubiquitous in environment worldwide. After the implementation of regulations about BPA use, manufacturers have moved their production toward alternative substances structurally similar to it. Unfortunately, BPA analogues, given their structural similarity, exert also similar adverse effects. This review aims to investigate the occurrence of bisphenols (BPs) in bivalve molluscs. In this way, valuable information on the amount of BPs released into the environment in different areas are given. The current research indicates that BPA presence in bivalve molluscs has been investigated in Asia (Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean), Europe (Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea and Atlantic Ocean) and America (Lake Mead, Nevada) with the highest amount of studies reported in bivalves harvested in Asian Coasts. BPA analogues are frequently detected in several matrices and their levels will continuously increase in the environment. Nevertheless, there is a current lack of studies analysing BPs other than BPA in bivalves. Further investigations should be conducted in this direction, in order to assess environmental distribution and the hazard for animals and human health given that seafood consumption could be an important pathway of bisphenols intake.

Identification of synergistic and antagonistic actions of environmental pollutants: Bisphenols A, S and F in the presence of DEP, DBP, BADGE and BADGE·2HCl in three component mixtures

Ecosystems are facing increased pressure due to the emission of many classes of emerging contaminants. However, very little is known about the interactions of these pollutants, such as bisphenols (BPs), plasticizers or pharmaceuticals. By employing bioluminescent bacteria (Microtox assay), we were able to define interactions between selected emerging pollutants (namely BPA, BPS, BPF, BADGE, BADGE·2HCl, DEP, DBP) in ternary mixtures, at environmentally relevant concentration levels (down to as low as 1.89, 1.42, 3.08, and 0.326 μM for, respectively, BPA, BPF, BPS and BADGE·2HCl). We provide the first systematic analysis of bisphenols and phthalates in three component mixtures. Using this system, we performed toxicity modelling with concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) approaches, followed by data interpretation using Model Deviation Ratio (MDR) evaluation. Interestingly, we mathematically and experimentally confirmed a novel synergy between BPA, BADGE and BADGE·2HCl. The synergy of BPA, BADGE and BADGE·2HCl is distinct, with both models suggesting these analytes have a similar mode of action (MOA). Moreover, we unexpectedly found a strong antagonistic impact with DEP, in mixtures containing BPA and BADGE analogues, which is confirmed with both mathematical models. Our study also shows that the impact of BPS and BPF in many mixtures is highly concentration dependent, justifying the necessity to perform mixture studies using wide concentration ranges. Overall, this study demonstrates that bioluminescent bacteria are a relevant model for detecting the synergistic and antagonist actions of environmental pollutants in mixtures, and highlights the importance of analyzing combinations of pollutants in higher order mixtures.
