Constructed wetland substrates: A review on development, function mechanisms, and application in contaminants removal

Occurrence, dissipation kinetics and environmental risk assessment of antibiotics and their metabolites in agricultural soils

Antibiotics are among the emerging contaminants of greatest concern to the scientific community. However, the occurrence and behaviour of their metabolites in soils have been scarcely studied. To address this research gap, this study investigates the occurrence, sorption, dissipation kinetics, and environmental risk of highly important antibiotics (sulfamethazine, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim) and their main metabolites in Mediterranean agricultural soils. Batch experiments were conducted under natural conditions for 120 days. Five different dissipation kinetics models were applied to elucidate antibiotics degradation. The sorption isotherms were evaluated by three different models. Most of the antibiotics and metabolites tested showed a good fit with the Linear Isotherm model (R2 >0.96) and biphasic dissipation kinetic models (R2 >0.90). The dissipation and the endpoints values (DT50 and DT90) depended on the soil type properties. A Lixisol soil demonstrated reduced degradation of the investigated compounds. Trimethoprim showed the highest persistence, followed by sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, and sulfadiazine. Parent compounds exhibited lower degradation rates than their metabolites. Remaining antibiotic concentrations were found to be below the predicted no-effect concentration in soil, suggesting that they may not pose a risk to terrestrial biota. This study provides valuable insights into the behaviour of these antibiotics and their metabolites in soil.

Non-phytoremediation and phytoremediation technologies of integrated remediation for water and soil heavy metal pollution: A comprehensive review

Since the 1980s, there has been increasing concern over heavy metal pollution remediation. However, most research focused on the individual remediation technologies for heavy metal pollutants in either soil or water. Considering the potential migration of these pollutants, it is necessary to explore effective integrated remediation technologies for soil and water heavy metals. This review thoroughly examines non-phytoremediation technologies likes physical, chemical, and microbial remediation, as well as green remediation approaches involving terrestrial and aquatic phytoremediation. Non-phytoremediation technologies suffer from disadvantages like high costs, secondary pollution risks, and susceptibility to environmental factors. Conversely, phytoremediation technologies have gained significant attention due to their sustainable and environmentally friendly nature. Enhancements through chelating agents, biochar, microorganisms, and genetic engineering have demonstrated improved phytoremediation remediation efficiency. However, it is essential to address the environmental and ecological risks that may arise from the prolonged utilization of these materials and technologies. Lastly, this paper presents an overview of integrated remediation approaches for addressing heavy metal contamination in groundwater-soil-surface water systems and discusses the reasons for the research gaps and future directions. This paper offers valuable insights for comprehensive solutions to heavy metal pollution in water and soil, promoting integrated remediation and sustainable development.

Nutrient removal in floating and vertical flow constructed wetlands using aluminium dross: An innovative approach to mitigate eutrophication

On global scale, eutrophication is one of the most prevalent environmental threats to water quality, primarily caused by elevated concentration of nutrients in wastewater. This study utilizes aluminum dross (AD), an industrial waste, to create a value-added material by improving its operational feasibility and application for removing phosphate and ammonium from water. The operational challenges of AD such as its powdered nature and effective operation under only extreme pH conditions were addressed by immobilizing in calcium alginate to form calcium alginate aluminium dross (Ca-Alg-Al dross) beads. These Ca-Alg-Al dross beads were further tested for phosphate and ammonium removal from natural wastewater in two different aqueous environment systems: (i) vertical flow constructed wetlands (VF-CWs) followed by Ca-Alg-Al dross beads fixed bed system and (ii) Ca-Alg-Al dross beads mounted floating constructed wetlands (FCW) for remediating polluted lentic ecosystems. Our results show maximum phosphate and ammonium removal of 85 ± 0.41 % and 93.44 %, respectively, in VF-CWs followed by Ca-Alg-Al dross beads fixed bed system. The Ca-Alg-Al dross beads mounted FCW system achieved maximum phosphate removal of 79.18 ± 8.56 % and ammonium removal of 65.45 ± 21.04 %. Furthermore, the treated water from the FCW system was assessed for its potential to inhibit algal growth by artificially inoculating treated water with natural algae to simulate eutrophic conditions. Interestingly, treated water from the FCW system was found capable of arresting the algal growth. Besides, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the functional groups and surface properties and probable participation of multiple mechanisms including ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and ligand complexation for phosphate and ammonium removal. Overall, these results offer a promising way to utilize AD for high-end applications in wastewater treatment.

A review of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) removal in constructed wetlands: Mechanisms, enhancing strategies and environmental risks

PER: Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), typical persistent organic pollutants detected in various water environments, have attracted widespread attention due to their undesirable effects on ecology and human health. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have emerged as a promising, cost-effective, and nature-based solution for removing persistent organic pollutants. This review summarizes the removal performance of PFASs in CWs, underlying PFASs removal mechanisms, and influencing factors are also discussed comprehensively. Furthermore, the environmental risks of PFASs-enriched plants and substrates in CWs are analyzed. The results show that removal efficiencies of total PFASs in various CWs ranged from 21.3% to 98%. Plant uptake, substrate absorption and biotransformation are critical pathways in CWs for removing PFASs, which can be influenced by the physiochemical properties of PFASs, operation parameters, environmental factors, and other pollutants. Increasing dissolved oxygen supply and replacing traditional substrates in CWs, and combining CWs with other technologies could significantly improve PFASs removal. Further, CWs pose relatively lower ecological and environmental risks in removing PFASs, which indicates CWs could be an alternative solution for controlling PFASs in aquatic environments.

Algae-constructed wetland integrated system for wastewater treatment: A review

Integrating algae into constructed wetlands (CWs) enhances wastewater treatment, although the results vary. This review evaluates the role of algae in CWs and the performance of different algae-CW (A-CW) configurations based on literature and meta-analysis. Algae considerably improve N removal, although their impact on other parameters varies. Statistical analysis revealed that 70 % of studies report improved treatment efficiencies with A-CWs, achieving average removal rates of 75 % for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 74 % for total nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen, and 79 % for total phosphorus (TP). This review identifies hydraulic retention times, which average 3.1 days, and their varied impact on treatment efficacy. Mixed-effects models showed a slight increase in COD and TP removal efficiencies of 0.6 % every ten days in the A-CWs. Future research should focus on robust experimental designs, adequate algal storage and separation techniques, and advanced modeling to optimize the treatment potential of algae in CWs.

Assessment of secondary metabolites in Pennisetum purpureum planted into constructed wetlands using shale and laterite as substrate for wastewater treatment

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are systems designed to maximize pollutants removal by various mechanisms, most of which are associated with the presence of plants. However, the substances secreted by plants to defend themselves against external aggressions during their growth are very little studied in these systems. This study aimed to characterize the chemical constituents of Pennisetum purpureum extracts used in an experimental mesocosm filled with shale and laterite treating domestic wastewater. Above-ground biomass, strain diameter and secondary metabolites of P. purpureum plants grown on the different substrates (shale and laterite) were monitored, as were those grown on the experimental site (control). In addition, the removal performance of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total Kjedahl nitrogen (TKN) and Total Phosphorus (TP) was determined at the outlet of CWs. Plant biomass measured on the shale bed (13.7 ± 0.5 kg m-2) was higher than on the laterite bed (12.5 ± 0.1 kg m-2), both lower than the biomass obtained in the natural environment (14.9 ± 0.6 kg m-2). Performances ranged from 83 ± 5.4 to 76.9 ± 7 % (COD), 84.7 ± 6.8 to 78 ± 8.1 % (BOD5), 72.2 ± 10.7 to 55.5 ± 16.4 % (NTK) and 72.4 ± 4.9 to 58.4 ± 3.4 % (TP), with higher efficiencies in the shale-filled bed. Plant extracts from the experimental site were richer in secondary metabolites (total polyphenol [73.5 mgEAG/gMS], total flavonoids [18.1 mgEQ/gMS] and condensed tannin [13.3 mgEC/gMS]) than those from plants grown in CWs. However, plants in the shale-filled bed secreted more total polyphenol (57.7 mgEAG/gMS), total flavonoids (12.1 mgEQ/gMS) and condensed tannin (12 mgEC/gMS) than those in the laterite-filled bed. In short, wastewater and filtration materials have an influence on the secretion of secondary plant metabolites. However, of the two materials, shale seems to be better suited to CWs, as it promotes an environment close to the natural environment.

Effect of monocultures and polycultures of Typha latifolia and Heliconia psittacorum on the treatment of river waters contaminated with landfill leachate/domestic wastewater in partially saturated vertical constructed wetlands

Partially Saturated Vertical Constructed Wetlands (PSV-CWs) are novel wastewater treatment systems that work through aerobic and anaerobic conditions that favor the removal of pollutants found in high concentrations, such as rivers contaminated with domestic wastewater and landfill leachate. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of PSV-CWs using monocultures and polycultures of Typha latifolia and Heliconia psittacorum to treat river waters contaminated with leachates from open dumps and domestic wastewater. Six experimental units of PSV-CWs were used; two were planted with Typha latifolia monoculture, two with Heliconia psittacorum monoculture and two with polycultures of both plants. The results indicated better organic matter and nitrogen removal efficiencies (p < 0.05) in systems with polycultures (TSS:95%, BOD5:83%, COD:89%, TN:82% and NH4+:99%). In general, the whole system showed high average removal efficiencies (TSS:93%, BOD5:79%, COD:85%, TN:79%, NH4+:98% and TP:85%). Regarding vegetation, both species developed better in units with monocultures, being Typha latifolia the one that reached a more remarkable development. However, both species showed high resistance to the contaminated environment. These results showed higher removals than those reported in the literature with conventional Free Flow Vertical Constructed Wetlands (FFV-CWs), so PSV-CWs could be a suitable option to treat this type of effluent.

Free water surface constructed wetlands: review of pollutant removal performance and modeling approaches

Free water surface constructed wetlands (FWSCWs) for the treatment of various wastewater types have evolved significantly over the last few decades. With an increasing need and interest in FWSCWs applications worldwide due to their cost-effectiveness and other benefits, this paper reviews recent literature on FWSCWs' ability to remove different types of pollutants such as nutrients (i.e., TN, TP, NH4-N), heavy metals (i.e., Fe, Zn, and Ni), antibiotics (i.e., oxytetracycline, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, sulfamethazine, and ofloxacin), and pesticides (i.e., Atrazine, S-Metolachlor, imidacloprid, lambda-cyhalothrin, diuron 3,4-dichloroanilin, Simazine, and Atrazine) that may co-exist in wetland inflow, and discusses approaches for simulating hydraulic and pollutant removal processes. A bibliometric analysis of recent literature reveals that China has the highest number of publications, followed by the USA. The collected data show that FWSCWs can remove an average of 61.6%, 67.8%, 54.7%, and 72.85% of inflowing nutrients, heavy metals, antibiotics, and pesticides, respectively. Optimizing each pollutant removal process requires specific design parameters. Removing heavy metal requires the lowest hydraulic retention time (HRT) (average of 4.78 days), removing pesticides requires the lowest water depth (average of 0.34 m), and nutrient removal requires the largest system size. Vegetation, especially Typha spp. and Phragmites spp., play an important role in FWSCWs' system performance, making significant contributions to the removal process. Various modeling approaches (i.e., black-box and process-based) were comprehensively reviewed, revealing the need for including the internal process mechanisms related to the biological processes along with plants spp., that supported by a further research with field study validations. This work presents a state-of-the-art, systematic, and comparative discussion on the efficiency of FWSCWs in removing different pollutants, main design factors, the vegetation, and well-described models for performance prediction.

Fungal removal of cyanotoxins in constructed wetlands: The forgotten degraders

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms have increased globally, releasing hazardous cyanotoxins that threaten the safety of water resources. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a nature-based and low-cost solution to purify and remove cyanotoxins from water. However, bio-mechanistic understanding of the biotransformation processes expected to drive cyanotoxin removal in such systems is poor, and primarily focused on bacteria. Thus, the present study aimed at exploring the fungal contribution to microcystin-LR and cylindrospermopsin biodegradation in CWs. Based on CW mesocosms, two experimental approaches were taken: a) amplicon sequencing studies were conducted to investigate the involvement of the fungal community; and b) CW fungal isolates were tested for their microcystin-LR and cylindrospermopsin degradation capabilities. The data uncovered effects of seasonality (spring or summer), cyanotoxin exposure, vegetation (unplanted, Juncus effusus or Phragmites australis) and substratum (sand or gravel) on the fungal community structure. Additionally, the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus and the endophyte Myrmecridium showed positive correlations with cyanotoxin removal. Fungal isolates revealed microcystin-LR-removal potentials of approximately 25 % in in vitro biodegradation experiments, while the extracellular chemical fingerprint of the cultures suggested a potential intracellular metabolization. The results from this study may help us understand the fungal contribution to cyanotoxin removal, as well as their ecology in CWs.

Characteristics and mechanisms of phosphine production in sulfur-based constructed wetlands

Phosphine (PH3) is an important contributor to the phosphorus cycle and is widespread in various environments. However, there are few studies on PH3 in constructed wetlands (CWs). In this study, lab-scale CWs and batch experiments were conducted to explore the characteristics and mechanisms of PH3 production in sulfur-based CWs. The results showed that the PH3 release flux of sulfur-based CWs varied from 0.86±0.04 ng·m-2·h-1 to 1.88±0.09 ng·m-2·h-1. The dissolved PH3 was the main PH3 form in CWs and varied from 2.73 μg·L-1 to 4.08 μg·L-1. The matrix-bound PH3 was a staging reservoir for PH3 and increased with substrate depth. In addition, the sulfur-based substrates had a significant improvement on PH3 production. Elemental sulfur is more conducive to PH3 production than pyrite. Moreover, there was a significant positive correlation between PH3 production, the dsrB gene, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). NADH might catalyze the phosphate reduction process. And the final stage of the dissimilatory sulfate reduction pathway driven by the dsrB gene might also provide energy for phosphate reduction. The migration and transformation of PH3 increased the available P (Resin-P and NaHCO3-P) from 35 % to 56 % in sulfur-based CW, and the P adsorption capacity was improved by 12 %. The higher proportion of available P increased the plant uptake rate of P by 17 %. This study improves the understanding of the phosphorus cycle in sulfur-based CW and provides new insight into the long-term stable operation of CWs.

Toxic effects of nanoplastics on biological nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands: Evidence from iron utilization and metabolism

Nanoplastics (NPs) in wastewaters may present a potential threat to biological nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands (CWs). Iron ions are pivotal in microbially mediated nitrogen metabolism, however, explicit evidence demonstrating the impact of NPs on nitrogen removal regulated by iron utilization and metabolism remains unclear. Here, we investigated how NPs disturb intracellular iron homeostasis, consequently interfering with the coupling mechanism between iron utilization and nitrogen metabolism in CWs. Results indicated that microorganisms affected by NPs developed a siderophore-mediated iron acquisition mechanism to compensate for iron loss. This deficiency resulted from NPs internalization limited the activity of the electron transport system and key enzymes involved in nitrogen metabolism. Microbial network analysis further suggested that NPs exposure could potentially trigger destabilization in microbial networks and impair effective microbial communication, and ultimately inhibit nitrogen metabolism. These adverse effects, accompanied by the dominance of Fe3+ over certain electron acceptors engaged in nitrogen metabolism under NPs exposure, were potentially responsible for the observed significant deterioration in nitrogen removal (decreased by 30 %). This study sheds light on the potential impact of NPs on intracellular iron utilization and offers a substantial understanding of the iron-nitrogen coupling mechanisms in CWs.

Analysis and remediation of phthalates in aquatic matrices: current perspectives

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are high production volume chemicals used extensively as plasticizers, to increase the flexibility of the main polymer. They are reported to leach into their surroundings from plastic products and are now a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. Phthalate levels have been determined in several environmental matrices, especially in water. These levels serve as an indicator of plasticizer abuse and plastic pollution, and also serve as a route of exposure to different species including humans. Reports published on effects of different PAEs on experimental models demonstrate their carcinogenic, teratogenic, reproductive, and endocrine disruptive effects. Therefore, regular monitoring and remediation of environmental water samples is essential to ascertain their hazard quotient and daily exposure levels. This review summarises the extraction and detection techniques available for phthalate analysis in water samples such as chromatography, biosensors, immunoassays, and spectroscopy. Current remediation strategies for phthalate removal such as adsorption, advanced oxidation, and microbial degradation have also been highlighted.

New insights for simultaneous nutrient removal enhancement and greenhouse gas emissions reduction of constructed wetland by optimizing its redox environment through manganese oxide addition

Manganese oxide (MnOx) is receiving increased interest in the nutrient removal of constructed wetlands (CWs); however, its service effectiveness for simultaneous greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction is still vague. In this study, three vertical flow CWs, i.e., volcanics (CCW), manganese sand uniformly mixing with volcanics (Mn-CW) and MnOx doped volcanics (MnV-CW), were constructed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of MnOx on nutrient removal enhancement and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction. The results showed that the MnOx doped volcanics optimized the oxidation-reduction potential surrounding the substrate (-164.0 ∼ +141.1 mv), and resulted in the lowest GHG emissions (CO2-equivalent) from MnV-CW, 16.8-36.5 % lower than that of Mn-CW and CCW. This was mainly ascribed to mitigation of N2O produced during the NO3--N reduction process, according to results of 15N stable isotope labeling. Analysis of the microbial community structure revealed that due to the optimized redox conditions through chemical doping of MnOx on volcanics, the abundance of microbe involved in denitrification and Mn-oxidizing process in the MnV-CW was significantly increased at genus level, which led to a higher Mn cycling efficiency between biogenic MnOx and Mn2+, and enhanced denitrification efficiency and N2O emission reduction. This study would help to understand and provide a preferable reference for future applications for manganese-based CW.

Bioaccumulation efficacy and physio-morphological adaptations in response to iron and aluminium contamination of Indian camphorweed (Pluchea indica L.) using different growth substrates

The aim of this study was to assess the removal capability of Fe/Al contamination of Indian camphorweed (Pluchea indica; hereafter, P. indica) using different growth substrates (100% sand, gardening soil, vermiculite, and zeolite). In addition, the study aimed at observing the physio-morphological adaptation strategies of P. indica under excess Fe/Al levels in a controlled greenhouse environment. After a 4-week treatment, P. indica plants under excess Fe in the 100% sand substrate exhibited signs of decay and eventually death. In contrast, the growth performances of P. indica under gardening soil substrate remained sustained even when exposed to Fe/Al stress. Under zeolite substrate, Fe in the root tissues was 23.1 and 34.7 mg g-1 DW after 1 and 4 weeks of incubation, respectively. In addition, Al in the root tissues also increased to 1.54 mg g-1 DW after 1 week and 1.59 mg g-1 DW after 4 weeks, when subjected to 20 mM Al treatment. Zeolite was observed to be a promising substrate to regulate the uptake of Fe (3.31 mg plant-1) and Al (0.51 mg plant-1) by the root tissues. The restriction of Fe and Al in the root and a low translocation to the leaf organ was indicated by a low translocation factor (< 1.0). High Fe concentrations in the root and leaf tissues negatively affected root elongation, and the net photosynthetic rate decreased by > 40% compared to positive control. Gas exchange parameters and leaf temperature were found the most sensitive to Fe/Al stress. Moreover, the limited transpiration rate under Fe/Al stress caused an increase of the leaf temperature and crop stress index. The findings suggest that P. indica grown using zeolite substrate may serve as a good model system for constructed wetlands, storing excess Al in the root tissues without any significant growth inhibition.

Actas Pink-2B dye removal in biochar nanocomposites augmented vertical flow constructed wetland (VF-CWs)

Industries generate hazardous dye wastewater, posing significant threats to public health and the environment. Removing dyes before discharge is crucial. The ongoing study primarily focused on synthesizing, applying, and understanding the mechanism of green nano-biochar composites. These composites, including zinc oxide/biochar, copper oxide/biochar, magnesium oxide/biochar, and manganese oxide/biochar, are designed to effectively remove Actas Pink-2B (Direct Red-31) in conjunction with constructed wetlands. Constructed wetland maintained pH 6.0-7.9. At the 10th week, the copper oxide/biochar treatment demonstrated the highest removal efficiency of total suspended solids (72%), dissolved oxygen (7.2 mg/L), and total dissolved solids (79.90%), followed by other biochar composites. The maximum removal efficiency for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color was observed at a retention time of 60 days. The electrical conductivity also followed the same order, with a decrease observed up to the 8th week before becoming constant. A comprehensive statistical analysis was conducted, encompassing various techniques including variance analysis, regression analysis, correlation analysis, and principal component analysis. The rate of color and COD removal followed a second-order and first-order kinetics, respectively. A significant negative relationship was observed between dissolved oxygen and COD. The study indicates that employing biochar composites in constructed wetlands improves textile dye removal efficiency.

Biochar-modified constructed wetlands using Eclipta alba as a plant for sustainable rural wastewater treatment

Constructed wetlands (CWs) provide a low-cost, effective solution for domestic wastewater treatment in developing nations compared to costly traditional wastewater systems. Biochar which is an organic material created by pyrolysis offers straightforward, affordable methods for treating wastewater and lowering carbon footprint by acting as a substrate in CWs. Batch mode biochar-amended subsurface flow (SSF) CWs planted with Eclipta alba (L) with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 days were used for the treatment of rural domestic wastewater in the present investigation. Two control CWs, without plants (C1) and with plants (C2), and five different amendments of biochar 5% (B5), 10% (B10), 15% (B15), 20% (B20) and 25% (B25) in ratio with soil were set up to check the treatment efficiency of CWs. Removal efficiency (RE%) of the CWs for parameters namely chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), phosphate (PO42-), sulphate (SO42-), nitrate (NO3-) and total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN) was determined using standard methods. Removal efficiency of 93%, 91%, 74% and 77% was observed for BOD, COD, nitrate and sulphate, respectively, in the B25 amendment at HRT 72 h. The highest removal of TKN (67%) was also observed in the B25 amendment at HRT of 72 h. No stable trend for the removal of phosphates was found during the study, and maximum removal was observed at HRT 48 h; afterward, phosphate was slightly inclined with the increasing HRT. The findings of one-way ANOVA using Tukey's test show significant variations (p < 0.05) in the removal efficiencies of pollutants after 72 h between two controls (C1 and C2) and various biochar amendments in CWs, indicating a significant role of the wetland plants and concentration of the biochar as substrate. Biochar shows a positive impact on the removal of organic pollutants and nitrates. Hence, biochar-amended CWs can be a sustainable way of treating rural domestic wastewater.

Removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from hospital wastewater using constructed wetlands: a review

AbstractPharmaceutical compounds are a significant source of environmental pollution, particularly in hospital wastewater, which contains high concentrations of such compounds. Constructed wetlands have emerged as a promising approach to removing pharmaceutical compounds from wastewater. This paper aims to review the current state of knowledge on the removal of pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater using constructed wetlands, including the mechanism of removal, removal efficiency, and future prospects. Pharmaceutical contaminants have been considered to be one of the most emerging pollutants in recent years. In this review article, various studies on constructed wetlands are incorporated in order to remove the pharmaceutical contaminants. The nature of constructed wetland can be explained by understanding the types of constructed wetland, characteristics of hospital wastewater, removal mechanism, and removal efficiency. The results of the review indicate that constructed wetlands are effective in removing pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater. The removal mechanism of these compounds involves a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes, including adsorption, degradation, and uptake by wetland plants. The removal efficiency of constructed wetlands varies depending on several factors, including the type and concentration of pharmaceutical compounds, the design of the wetland system, and the environmental conditions. Further research is necessary to optimize the performance of these systems, particularly in the removal of emerging contaminants, to ensure their effectiveness and long-term sustainability.

A review on the fate of micro and nano plastics (MNPs) and their implication in regulating nutrient cycling in constructed wetland systems

This review discusses the micro-nano plastics (MNPs) and their interaction with physical, chemical and biological processes in a constructed wetland (CW) system that is typically used as a nature-based tertiary wastewater treatment for municipal as well as industrial applications. Individual components of the CW system such as substrate, microorganisms and plants were considered to assess how MNPs influence the CW processes. One of the main functions of a CW system is removal of nutrients like nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and here we highlight the pathways through which the MNPs influence CW's efficacy of nutrient removal. The presence of morphologically (size and shape) and chemically different MNPs influence the growth rate of microorganisms important in N and P cycling, invertebrates, decomposers, and the plants which affect the overall efficiency of a CW treatment system. Certain plant species take up the MNPs, and some toxicity has been observed. This review focuses on two significant aspects: (1) the presence of MNPs in a significant concentration affects the efficiency of N and P removal, and (2) the removal of MNPs. Because MNPs reduce the enzyme activities in abundance and overproduction of ROS oxidizes the enzyme active sites, resulting in the depletion of proteins, ultimately inhibiting nitrogen and phosphorus removal within the substrate layer. The review found that the majority of the studies used sand-activated carbon (SAC), granular-activated carbon (GAC), rice straw, granular limestone, and calcium carbonate, as a substrate for CW treatment systems. Common plant species used in the CW include Phragmites, Arabidopsis thaliana, Lepidium sativum, Thalia dealbata, and Canna indica, which were also found to be dominant in the uptake of the MNPs in the CWs. The MNPs were found to affect earthworms such as Eisenia fetida, Caenorhabditis elegans, and, Enchytraeus crypticus, whereas Metaphire vulgaris were found unaffected. Though various mechanisms take place during the removal process, adsorption and uptake mechanism effectively emphasize the removal of MNPs and nitrogen and phosphorus in CW. The MNPs characteristics (type, size, and concentration) play a crucial role in the removal efficiency of nano-plastics (NPs) and micro-plastics (MPs). The enhanced removal efficiency of NPs compared to MPs can be attributed to their smaller size, resulting in a faster reaction rate. However, NPs dose variation showed fluctuating removal efficiency, whereas MPs dose increment reduces removal efficiency. MP and NPs dose variation also affected toxicity to plants and earthworms as observed from data. Understanding the fate and removal of microplastics in wetland systems will help determine the reuse potential of wastewater and restrict the release of microplastics. This study provides information on various aspects and highlights future gaps and needs for MNP fate study in CW systems.

Synthesis of amorphous-MnO2/Clinoptilolite and its utilization for NH4+-N oxidation in an anoxic environment

Mediating the anoxic ammonia oxidation with manganese oxide (MnOx) can reduce the requirements of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in constructed wetlands (CWs) and improve the removal of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N). Recent studies that employed natural manganese ore and/or mine waste as substrates in CWs may develop potentially negative environmental effects due to leachates. However, removing NH4+-N by anoxic ammonia oxidation is influenced by the crystal form of MnOx. In this study, a novel clinoptilolite-based amorphous-MnO2 (amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite) was synthesized by the sol-gel method as an alternative substrate to improve the efficiency of anoxic ammonia oxidation and reduce the impact of Mn ion leaching. According to the anoxic ammonia oxidation experiment of clinoptilolite, amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite, and manganese ore on NH4+-N, the amounts of NH4+-N removed were 24.55 mg/L/d, 44.55 mg/L/d, and 11.04 mg/L/d, respectively, and the initial NH4+-N concentration was 49.53 mg/L. These results indicated that the amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite had both the adsorption and the anoxic ammonia oxidation performance. The recycling experiment demonstrated that the effect of anoxic ammonia oxygen mediated by amorphous-MnO2 would not diminish with the gradual saturation of clinoptilolite for NH4+-N. Furthermore, the anoxic ammonia oxidation consumed NH4+-N in the clinoptilolite, which restored the adsorption capacity of the clinoptilolite and simultaneously decreased the leakage of manganese ions in the process, making it environmentally friendly. Therefore, the amorphous-MnO2/clinoptilolite provided an excellent substrate material for the constructed wetland under an anoxic environment, which greatly improved the nitrogen removal capacity compared to existing substrate materials.

Biodegradation and sorption of nutrients and endocrine disruptors in a novel concrete-based substrate in vertical-flow constructed wetlands

Removing phosphorus and endocrine-disruptors (EDC) is still challenging for low-cost sewage treatment systems. This study investigated the efficiency of three vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) vegetated with Eichhornia crassipes onto red clay (CW-RC), autoclaved aerated concrete (CW-AC), and composite from the chemical activation of autoclaved aerated concrete with white cement (CW-AAC) in the removal of organic matter, nutrients, and estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol. The novelty aspect of this study is related to selecting these clay and cementitious-based materials in removing endocrine disruptors and nutrients in VFCW. The subsurface VFCW were operated in sequencing-batch mode (cycles of 48-48-72 h), treating synthetic wastewater for 308 days. The operation consisted of Stages I and II, different by adding EDC in Stage II. The presence of EDC increased the competition for dissolved oxygen (DO) and reduced the active sites available for adsorption, diminishing the removal efficiencies of TKN and TAN and total phosphorus in the systems. CW-RC showed a significant increase in COD removal from 65% to 91%, while CW-AC and CW-AAC maintained stable COD removal (84%-82% and 78%-81%, respectively). Overall, the substrates proved effective in removing EDC, with CW-AC and CW-AAC achieving >60% of removal. Bacteria Candidatus Brocadia and Candidatus Jettenia, responsible for carrying out the Anammox process, were identified in assessing the microbial community structure. According to the mass balance analysis, adsorption is the main mechanism for removing TP in CW-AC and CW-AAC, while other losses were predominant in CW-RC. Conversely, for TN removal, the adsorption is more representative in CW-RC, and the different metabolic routes of microorganisms, biofilm assimilation, and partial ammonia volatilization in CW-AC and CW-AAC. The results suggest that the composite AAC is the most suitable material for enhancing the simultaneous removal of organic matter, nutrients, and EDC in VFCW under the evaluated operational conditions.

Technical structure and influencing factors of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands

Constructed wetlands purify water quality by synergistically removing nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants from water, among other pollutants such as organic matter through a physical, chemical, and biological composite remediation mechanism formed between plants, fillers, and microorganisms. Compared with large-scale centralized wastewater treatment systems with high cost and energy consumption, the construction and operation costs of artificial wetlands are relatively low, do not require large-scale equipment and high energy consumption treatment processes, and have the characteristics of green, environmental protection, and sustainability. Gradually, constructed wetlands are widely used to treat nitrogen and phosphorus substances in wastewater. Therefore, this article discusses in detail the role and interaction of the main technical structures (plants, microorganisms, and fillers) involved in nitrogen and phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands. At the same time, it analyses the impact of main environmental parameters (such as pH and temperature) and operating conditions (such as hydraulic load and hydraulic retention time, forced ventilation, influent carbon/nitrogen ratio, and feeding patterns) on nitrogen and phosphorus removal in wetland systems, and addresses the problems currently existing in relevant research, the future research directions are prospected in order to provide theoretical references for scholars' research.

Co-utilization of iron ore tailings and coal fly ash for porous ceramsite preparation: Optimization, mechanism, and assessment

Maximizing the utilization of industrial by-products, such as iron ore tailings (IOTs) and coal fly ash (CFA), is crucial toward sustainable development. This study provides a meticulous insight into the optimization, mechanism, and assessment of the co-utilization of IOTs and CFA for the preparation of porous ceramsite. Micro-CT results revealed that the prepared ceramsite exhibited an exceptional porosity, peaking at 56.98%, with a wide range of pore diameters (3.55-959.10 μm) under optimal conditions (IOTs content at 76%, preheating at 550 °C for 15 min, and sintering at 1177 °C for 14 min), while maintaining good mechanical properties (water adsorption of 1.28%, comprehensive strength of 8.75 MPa, apparent density of 1.37 g/cm3, and bulk density of 0.62 g/cm3). The primary parameters affecting the porosity were identified and ranked as follows: sintering temperature > IOTs content > sintering time. The formation and growth of pores could be attributed to the equilibrium relationship between the liquid-phase surface tension and the gas expansion force, accompanied by pore wall thinning and pore merging. Notably, the prepared ceramsite is both ecologically feasible and economically rewarding, boasting a profit margin of 9.47 $/ton. The comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) conducted further highlights the potential of its large-scale implementation for promoting sustainable development. This study provides an innovative strategy for the co-utilization of IOTs and CFA, with advantages such as cost-effectiveness, ecological feasibility and scalability of production.

Structural and functional perspectives of carbon filter media in constructed wetlands for pollutants abatement from wastewater

Constructed wetlands (CWs) represent the most viable artificial wastewater treatment system that works on the principles of natural wetlands. Filter media are integrally linked to CWs and have substantial impacts on their performance for pollutant removal. Carbon-derived substrates have been in the spotlight for decades due to their abundance, sustainability, reusability, and potential to treat complex contaminants. However, the efficiency and feasibility of carbon substrates have not been fully explored, and there are only a few studies that have rigorously analyzed their performance for wastewater treatment. This critical synthesis of the literature review offers comprehensive insights into the utilization of carbon-derived substrates in the context of pollutant removal, intending to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of CWs. It also compares several carbon-based substrates with non-carbon substrates with respect to physiochemical properties, pollutant removal efficiency, and cost-benefit analysis. Furthermore, it addresses the concerns and possible remedies about carbon filtration materials such as configuration, clogging minimization, modification, and reusability to improve the efficacy of substrates and CWs. Recommendations made to address these challenges include pretreatment of wastewater, use of a substrate with smaller pore size, incorporation of multiple filter media, the introduction of earthworms, and cultivation of plants. A current scientific scenario has been presented for identifying the research gaps to investigate the functional mechanisms of modified carbon substrates and their interaction with other CW components.

Enhanced nitrogen removal from rural domestic sewage via partial nitrification-anammox in integrated vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland

This study aimed to improve the removal of nitrogen treating rural domestic sewage by developing a novel strategy for achieving partial nitrification-anammox (PNA) in an integrated vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland (VSFCW). The influent ammonia was oxidized to nitrite in the partial nitrification VSFCW (VSFCWPN), and 5 mg/L of hydroxylamine was added under the appropriate dissolved oxygen concentration level (1.2 ± 0.2 mg/L) to stabilize the average nitrite accumulation rate at 88.24% and maintain the effluent NO2--N/NH4+-N ratio at 1.26 ± 0.15. The effluent from VSFCWPN was introduced to the following chamber (VSFCWAN), where ammonia and nitrite were removed by the autotrophic anammox process. This implementation achieved high removal efficiencies for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and PO43--P, reaching 86.26%, 90.22%, and 78.94%, respectively, with influent concentrations of 120.75 mg/L, 60.02 mg/L, and 5.05 mg/L. Substrate samples were collected from 10 cm height (PN1, AN1) and 25 cm height (PN2, AN2). Microbial community analysis showed that Nitrosomonas dominated the community composition in VSFCWPN, with an increase from 1.61% in the inoculated sludgePN to 16.31% (PN1) and 12.09% (PN2). Meanwhile, Ca. Brocadia accounted for 44.81% (AN1) and 36.50% (AN2) in VSFCWAN. These results confirm the feasibility of the proposed strategy for establishing PNA and efficiently treating rural domestic sewage in an integrated VSFCW.

Assessment of agriwaste derived substrates to grow ornamental plants for constructed wetland

Burning of surplus residues in agricultural fields is a common practice in many countries of the world. This practice adds emissions into the atmosphere and results in the loss of essential plant nutrients, hence, there is a need for developing technologies for the sustainable management of agri-residues. Constructed wetlands offer excellent nature-based, low-cost green technologies for the treatment of wastewater using surplus agricultural residues as wetland substrates to grow ornamental plants as a source of income. This study was conducted to investigate the use of agricultural residues and biochar as substrates to grow ornamental plants in constructed wetlands. Four ornamental plants (Canna Indica, Gerbera jamesonii, Liliumwallichianum, and Tagetes erecta) were grown in six different substrate combinations for 120 days. Data on plant growth parameters were collected for each plant and compared to select the best substrate combination. Canna Indica and Lilium wallichianum resulted in significantly higher growth and nutrient uptake (P<0.001) with the substrate of 15% rice straw, 80% soil, 5% biochar (T4), and 25% sugarcane bagasse, 70% soil, 5% biochar (T5) compared to other plants. The result concluded that agricultural waste-derived substrates are viable alternatives having fertilizing effects with the potential for nutrient recovery. The present study provides an alternative approach to utilize agricultural waste sustainably to grow ornamental plants in the constructed wetland which reduces the overall cost of the wetland unit making it more cost-efficient.

Woody and herbaceous wastes for the remediation of polluted waters of wetlands

Plants wastes play an important role during water remediation in wetlands. Plant waste is made into biochar, which is usually used directly or as a water biofilter to remove pollutants. While, the water remediation effect of combination for biochar from woody and herbaceous wastes coupling with substrate types in CWs have not been fully explored. To explore the water remediation effect of combination for biochar coupling with substrate on pH, Turbidity, COD, NH₄⁺-N, TN and TP, four plant configuration modes combining seven woody plants and eight herbaceous plants (Plants A, Plants B, Plants C, Plants D) were coupled with three substrate types (Substrate 1, Substrate 2, Substrate 3) as 12 experiment groups, using water detection methods and significant differences test (LSD) to analyze. Results showed: (1) Compared to Substrate 3, Substrate 1 and Substrate 2 removed significantly higher in pollutants concentration (p < 0.05); (2) NH₄⁺-N final concentration in Plants C and Plants D were both significantly lower than Plants A and Plants B coupling with Substrate 1 and Substrate 2 (p < 0.05). The TN final concentration of Plants C was significantly lower than Plants A in Substrate 1 (p < 0.05), and Plants A's turbidity was significantly lower than Plants C and Plants D's in Substrate 2 (p < 0.05); (3) The pollutants removal of group A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D1 and D2 were significantly higher than other experiment groups (p < 0.05). Group A2, B2, C1 and D1 had the best water remediation effect and better stability of plant community. Findings in this study will be beneficial for remediating polluted water and building sustainable wetlands.

Biochar and hematite amendments suppress emission of CH4 and NO2 in constructed wetlands

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are considered a widely used cost-effective technology for pollutant removal. However, greenhouse gas emissions are a non-negligible problem in CWs. In this study, four laboratory-scale CWs were established to evaluate the effects of gravel (CW_B), hematite (CW_Fe), biochar (CW_C), and hematite + biochar (CW_Fe-C) as substrates on pollutants removal, greenhouse gas emissions, and associated microbial characteristics. The results showed that the biochar-amended CWs (CW_C and CW_Fe-C) enhanced the removal efficiency of pollutants, with 92.53 % and 93.66 % of COD and 65.73 % and 64.41 % of TN removal, respectively. Both single and combined inputs of biochar and hematite significantly reduced CH₄ and N₂O fluxes, with the lowest average of CH₄ flux obtained in CW_C (5.99 ± 0.78 mg CH₄ m^-2 h^-1) and the least N₂O flux in CW_Fe-C (287.57 ± 44.84 μg N₂O m^-2 h^-1). The substantial reduction of global warming potentials (GWP) was obtained in the applications of CW_C (80.25 %) and CW_Fe-C (79.5 %) in biochar-amended CWs. The presence of biochar and hematite mitigated CH₄ and N₂O emissions by modifying microbial communities with higher ratios of pmoA/mcrA and nosZ genes abundances, as well as increasing the abundance of denitrifying bacteria (Dechloromona, Thauera and Azospira). This study demonstrated that biochar and the combined use of biochar and hematite could be the potential candidates as functional substrates for the efficient removal of pollutants and simultaneously reducing GWP emissions in the constructed wetlands.

Enhanced nitrogen removal via biochar-mediated nitrification, denitrification, and electron transfer in constructed wetland microcosms

This study investigated the effect of biochar on real domestic wastewater treatment by constructed wetlands (CWs). To evaluate the role of biochar as a substrate and electron transfer medium on nitrogen transformation, three treatments of CW microcosms were established: conventional substrate (T1), biochar substrate (T2), and biochar-mediated electron transfer (T3). Nitrogen removal increased from 74% in T1 to 77.4% in T2 and 82.1% in T3. Nitrate generation increased in T2 (up to 2 mg/L) but decreased in T3 (lower than 0.8 mg/L), and the nitrification genes (amoA, Hao, and nxrA) in T2 and T3 increased by 132-164% and 129-217%, respectively, compared with T1 (1.56 × 10⁴- 2.34 × 10⁷ copies/g). The nitrifying Nitrosomonas, denitrifying Dechloromonas, and denitrification genes (narL, nirK, norC, and nosZ) in the anode and cathode of T3 were significantly higher than those of the other treatments (increased by 60-fold, 35-fold, and 19-38%). The genus Geobacter, related to electron transfer, increased in T3 (by 48-fold), and stable voltage (~150 mV) and power density (~9 uW/m²) were achieved. These results highlight the biochar-mediated enhancement of nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands via nitrification, denitrification, and electron transfer, and provide a promising approach for enhanced nitrogen removal by constructed wetland technology.

Reducing the inhibitive effect of fluorine and heavy metals on nitrate reduction by hydroxyapatite substrate in constructed wetlands

Bio-toxic inorganic pollutants, e.g., fluorine (F) and heavy metals (HMs), in wastewaters are the potential threats to nitrate (NO₃^--N) reduction by microorganisms in constructed wetlands (CWs). Selection of suitable substrate with high F and HMs adsorption efficiency and capacity is a potential alternative for simultaneous removal of these pollutants in CWs. Herein, this study investigated the feasibility of applying hydroxyapatite (HA)-gravel media for F and HMs adsorption and its effect on NO₃^--N reduction in CWs (HA CWs) by comparing the CWs filled with gravel substrate (CK CWs). The results indicated that the removal efficiency of F, Cr, As, and NO₃^--N in HA CWs increased by 113.6-, 3.3-, 2.7-, and 0.6-folds, respectively, compared to CK CWs. The NO₃^--N reduction rate decreased by 11-46% in CK CWs after the presence of F and HMs in influent, while for HA CWs, it was only 13-22%. Excellent F and HMs adsorption capacity of HA substrate availed for wetland plants resisting F/HMs toxicity and making catalase activity lower. The HA substrate in CWs resulted in the certain succession of nitrogen-transforming bacteria, e.g., nitrifiers (Nitrospira) and denitrifiers (Thiobacillus and Desulfobacterium). More importantly, key functional genes, including nirK/nirS, korA/korB, ChrA/ChrD, arsA/arsB, catalyzing the processes of nitrogen biotransformation, energy metabolism, NO₃^--N and metal ions reduction were also enriched in HA CWs. This study highlights HA substrate reduce the inhibitive effect of F and HMs on NO₃^--N reduction, and provides new insights into how microbiota structurally and functionally respond to different substrates in CWs.

Roles of substrates in removing antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in constructed wetlands: A review

Antibiotics and corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging pollutants in wastewater that pose a significant threat to the environment and human health. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a cost-effective technology for eliminating these pollutants through substrates, plants, and microorganisms. Detailed reviews of the roles of CW substrates on antibiotic and ARG removal and recent progress in the field are lacking. This paper reviews the mechanisms influencing antibiotic and ARG (intracellular and extracellular) removal in CWs, and natural, biomass, chemical, modified, industrial, novel, and combined substrates on their removal efficiencies. Generally, substrates remove antibiotics and ARGs mainly through adsorption, biodegradation, chemical oxidation, and filtration. Other mechanisms, such as photolysis, may also contribute to removal. Natural substrates (e.g., gravel, zeolite) are more frequently employed than other types of substrates. The removal performance of antibiotics and intracellular ARGs by zeolite was better than that of gravel through enhanced substrate adsorption, filtration, and biodegradation processes. Moreover, Mn ore showed promising high capability to remove high concentration of antibiotics through various removal pathways. In addition, combined substrates of soil/sand/gravel and other substrates further facilitate antibiotic removal. Future research is suggested to explore the mechanisms of competitive adsorption and redox-controlled biodegradation, investigate the effect of Fe/Mn oxides on the removal of antibiotics and ARGs via chemical oxidation, evaluate the removal of extracellular ARGs by CWs with different substrates, and investigate the effect of substrates on removal of antibiotics and ARGs in full-scale CWs.

Improving the removal efficiency of nitrogen and organics in vertical-flow constructed wetlands: the correlation of substrate, aeration and microbial activity

Four vertical-flow CWs (VFCWs) with different substrates and aeration conditions were studied on nutrient-removal capacity from synthetic wastewater. Zeolite substrate VFCWs (none-aerated: VFCW-1, aerated: VFCW-3) paralleled with ceramsite (none-aerated:VFCW-2, aerated: VFCW-4) were used to study the removal efficiencies of N and organics, the bacterial community, and the related functional genes. The results indicated that the pollutant removal efficiency was significantly enhanced by intermittent aeration. VFCW-4 (ceramsite with aeration) demonstrated a significant potential to remove NH₄⁺-N (89%), NO₃^--N (78%), TN (71%), and COD (65%). VFCW-3 and VFCW-4 had high abundances of Amx, amoA, and nirK genes, which was related to NH₄⁺-N and NO₂^--N removal. The microbial diversity and structure varied with aeration and substrate conditions. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Candidatus, and Acidobacteria were the main bacteria phyla, with the average proportion of 38%, 21%, 19%, and 7% in the VFCWs. Intermittent aeration increased the abundance of Acidobacteria, which was conducive to the removal of organic matters. Overall, ceramsite substrate combined with intermittent aeration has a great potential in removing pollutants in VFCWs.

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in a PCL-supported constructed wetland with limited aeration

Considerable advances have been made in the substrate design and operation strategies of constructed wetlands to facilitate nitrogen elimination. However, few studies examined the complicated interaction between solid organic substrates and limited aeration on nitrogen removal. A vertical flow constructed wetlands in gradient distribution of inorganic and solid organic substrates (polycaprolactone/PCL) (P-VFCW) and a controlled vertical flow constructed wetland without PCL (C-VFCW) were developed for the tertiary treatment of municipal tailwater. Results indicated that ammonia was nearly converted to nitrate, while the total nitrogen removal efficiencies (TNREs) in C-VFCW were negligible. In P-VFCW, however, optimal TNREs approached 95% with an aeration rate of 0.06 mL·min^-1 and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h, and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification process (SND) in aerobic conditions was confirmed. As for the spatial microbial community structure evolution, Comamonas, which is associated with heterotrophic nitrification and anoxic/aerobic denitrification, was enriched along the vertical profiles of P-VFCW. Autotrophic nitrifier (Nitrospira), aerobic denitrifier (Bradyrhizobium and Azospira), and anoxic denitrifier (Ignavibacterium and Methyloversatilis) were dominated in different depths of P-VFCW, respectively. Besides, Canna indica biomass in P-VFCW was significantly larger than that in C-VFCW, which was attributed to the plant adaption response to diverse nitrogen. The P-VFCW in gradient distribution of inorganic and solid carbon sources under limited aeration is a promising technology for advanced nitrogen removal.

Use of constructed wetlands to prevent overloading of wastewater treatment plants

The fluctuation in the number of people in tourist areas affects the wastewater quality and quantity. Constructed wetlands (CWs) aim to simulate physical, chemical, and biological processes occurring in natural environments for wastewater treatment and are considered a sustainable system. The current study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of in-vessel CWs for supporting the wastewaters treatment plants in periods of overloading. Such approach can be quickly implementable, economic, and the CWs can be fast regenerated in the framework of sustainable good practices. Three pilot scale CWs were prepared in as many containers layering 10 cm of gravel, 60 cm of sand and 10 cm of gravel, and placing pieces of giant reed rhizomes in the upper layers. The bottom of each CW had a tap, and CWs were irrigated with a real municipal sewage three times a week. Before each new irrigation, the tap was opened, and the effluent collected for determining gross parameters, elemental composition, and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). CWs significantly reduced almost all gross parameters considered and half the CECs, except for a couple of metabolites of corresponding parental compounds. With regards to the potentially toxic elements, all reduced their concentration from the influents to the effluents. The results of this study were promising and highlighted good efficiency of constructed wetlands as pre-treatment of real municipal sewage to reduce the overloading of the wastewater treatment plant.

Comprehensive analysis of the migration and transformation of nutrients between sediment and overlying water in complex habitat systems

Under the influence of environmental change, disturbance and other external conditions, sediments release internal nutrients to the overlying water and become a contamination source in the lake. Complex habitat systems provide a unique opportunity for determining the influences of environmental changes in lakes. In this study, Baiyangdian Lake (BYDL) was divided into different habitat systems (connected water areas, river courses, reed fields, lotus ponds, fishponds, farmland, and thorps) based on the influence of natural and artificial activities. The physical and chemical properties of overlying water and sediment in different habitat systems were investigated. In addition, statistical analytical methods were used to analyze the relationship between sediment characteristics and overlying water parameters in different habitat systems. The results showed that nitrogen and phosphorus in the overlying water could accumulate in the sediments, while disturbance was one of the main factors affecting the release of nutrients from sediments. Disturbance promoted the suspension of sediments and increased the oxygen content, thereby facilitating the internal release of nutrients. However, there were also some differences in the process of internal release of nutrients between the habitat systems. Nitrogen in the overlying water was closely related to the source of organic matter (r > 0.950), especially in the ponds (including lotus ponds, reed fields, and fishponds), and phosphorus was mainly influenced by turbidity (r > 0.870). In the river course (p = 0.198, n = 26), the disturbance and increase in pH promoted the internal release of nutrients from the sediments (contributions of 35.2 % and 25.1 %, respectively). In the ponds, the aquatic macrophytes reduced the release of nitrogen and phosphorus in sediments. Overall, this study provides more information on the migration and transformation of nutrients between sediment and overlying water in lakes with multiple habitats.

Effect of steel slag on ammonia removal and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms in zeolite-based tidal flow constructed wetlands

The ammonia removal performance of tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) requires to be improved under high hydraulic loading rates (HLRs). The pH decrease caused by nitrification may adversely affect the NH₄⁺-N removal and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOMs) of TFCWs. Herein, TFCWs with zeolite (TFCW_Z) and a mixture of zeolite and steel slag (TFCW_S) were built to investigate the influence of steel slag on NH₄⁺-N removal and AOMs. Both TFCWs were operated under short flooding/drying (F/D) cycles and high HLRs (3.13 and 4.69 m³/(m² d)). The results revealed that a neutral effluent pH (6.98-7.82) was achieved in TFCW_S owing to the CaO dissolution of steel slag. The NH₄⁺-N removal efficiencies in TFCW_S (91.2 ± 5.1%) were much higher than those in TFCW_Z (73.2 ± 7.1%). Total nitrogen (TN) removal was poor in both TFCWs mainly due to the low influent COD/TN. Phosphorus removal in TFCW_S was unsatisfactory because of the short hydraulic retention time. The addition of steel slag stimulated the flourishing AOMs, including Nitrosomonas (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, AOB), Candidatus_Nitrocosmicus (ammonia-oxidizing archaea, AOA), and comammox Nitrospira, which may be responsible for the better ammonia removal performance in TFCW_S. PICRUSt2 showed that steel slag also enriched the relative abundance of functional genes involved in nitrification (amoCAB, hao, and nxrAB) but inhibited genes related to denitrification (nirK, norB, and nosZ). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) revealed that complete AOB (CAOB) and AOB contributed more to the amoA genes in TFCW_S and TFCW_Z, respectively. Therefore, this study revealed that the dominant AOMs could be significantly changed in zeolite-based TFCW by adding steel slag to regulate the pH in situ, resulting in a more efficient NH₄⁺-N removal performance.

The performance and mechanism of iron-modified aluminum sludge substrate tidal flow constructed wetlands for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the effluent of wastewater treatment plants

Aiming at the poor N and P removal performance in the effluent of wastewater treatment plants by constructed wetlands (CWs), aluminum sludge (AS) from water supply plants was used to prepare iron-modified aluminum sludge (IAS), and tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) using IAS as substrates were constructed. By means of high-throughput sequencing, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), etc., the removal mechanism of N and P in the system and fate analysis of key elements were also interpreted. Results showed that an interlayer structure beneficial to adsorbing pollutants was formed in the IAS, due to the iron scraps entering into the molecular layers of AS. The removal rates of TP and TN by IAS-TFCWs reached 95 % and 47 %, respectively, when the flooding/resting time (F/R) and C/N were 6 h/2 h and 6. During the three-year operation of the IAS-TFCWs, the effluent concentrations of COD_Cr, NH₄⁺-N, and TP could comply with Class IV Standard of "Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water" (GB3838-2002). The mechanism analysis showed that the N removal was effectuated through Fe²⁺ as the electron donor of Fe(II)-driven the autotrophic denitrifying bacteria to reduce nitrate, while the P removal mainly depended on the adsorption reaction between FeOOH in IAS and phosphate. In conclusion, the stable Fe-N cycle in the IAS-TFCWs achieved simultaneous and efficient N and P removal.

Effect of dissolved humic acids and coated humic acids on tetracycline adsorption by K2CO3-activated magnetic biochar

Humic acids (HAs) widely exist in water environment, and has an important impact on the adsorption of pollutants. Herein, HAs (both dissolved and coated) was employed to assess the effect on the removal of the organic contaminant tetracycline (TC) by K₂CO₃ modified magnetic biochar (KMBC). Results showed that low concentration of dissolved HAs promoted TC removal, likely due to a bridging effect, while higher concentration of dissolved HAs inhibited TC adsorption because of the competition of adsorption sites on KMBC. By characterization analysis, coated HAs changed the surface and pore characteristics of KMBC, which suppressed the TC removal. In a sequential adsorption experiment involving dissolved HAs and TC, the addition of HAs at the end of the experiment led to the formation of HAs-TC ligands with free TC, which improved the adsorption capacity of TC. TC adsorption by KMBC in the presence of dissolved HAs and coated HAs showed a downward trend with increasing pH from 5.0 to 10.0. The TC adsorption process was favorable and endothermic, and could be better simulated by pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model. Hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions were hypothesized to be the underlying influencing mechanisms.

An innovative reuse of bottom ash from municipal solid waste incinerators as substrates of constructed wetlands

The incineration of municipal solid waste has been important in waste management, but it raises another environmental issue concerning residue treatment. This study describes an innovative use of naturally aged incineration bottom ash (AIBA) as an alternative substrate for horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) constructed wetlands (CW). Although experimental results from a period lasting for 396 days only revealed slightly higher removal ratios in HSSF with AIBA (HSSF-E) than in HSSF-traditional pebble beds (HSSF-C), increasing from 67% to 76% for BOD, 44%-51% for TKN, 47%-54% for NH₃-N, and 44%-52% for TN. The data indicate that the use of AIBA in HSSF CW can achieves a certain removal efficiency of BOD and nitrogen species. Interestingly, the total phosphorus removal rates also increased significantly from 20% in HSSF-C to 36% in HSSF-E. These observations on the use of AIBA in HSSF CW confirmed that AIBA is a suitable alternative for use as a substrate for HSSF CWs and identified an additional way to reuse incineration bottom ash. Design criteria for a CW using AIBA as a partial substrate is proposed to improve the pollutant removal performance of HSSF CWs.

An inexpensive phytoremediation system for treating 50,000 L/day of sewage

The paper describes the setting up and long-term continuous operation of the first real-life, pilot scale, sewage treatment plant based on the recently patented phytoremediation technology, trademarked as SHEFROL^®. The unit was about three times cheaper to install, operate and maintain than the least expensive of the other wetland-based technologies presently in vogue. Its semi-permanent version is 30 times cheaper. Monitoring of flow rates and levels of treatment intermittently over a 3 year course of continuous operation indicated the constancy and robustness of the reactor in treating total solids, suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and soluble phosphorous to the average extents of 94, 84, 79, 70, 62 and 28% respectively. Earlier experience with bench-scale SHEFROL^® units has indicated that removal of metals like Cu, Ni, Co, Zn, and Mn also takes place to the extent of 25-45% in these systems. These primary, secondary, and tertiary treatments occurred in a single unit process with no necessity of any pumping, aeration, or recycling. Models based on artificial intelligence were developed which enable forecasting the reactor performance in terms of secondary and tertiary treatment, respectively.

Removing nutrients from wastewater by constructed wetlands under perfluoroalkyl acids stress

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are often used to treat wastewater discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), while emerging contaminants (such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)) have been commonly discovered in WWTPs. However, no research has examined whether PFOA/OS (i.e. PFOA and PFOS) affects the performance of CW. Therefore, this study compared the nutrient removal efficiencies of four CWs with varied configurations under PFOA/OS and no PFOA/OS stress conditions. We found that CW containing plants or/and iron-carbon had higher removal efficiency for nutrients (except NH₄⁺-N) than conventional CW in stable operation under wastewater without PFOA/OS. Plants or/and iron increased the nutrient removal efficiency by plant uptake, chemical reaction, and co-precipitation of iron hydroxides. In contrast, the iron-carbon inhibited the nitrification of nitrifying bacteria by consuming dissolved oxygen, converting NO₃^--N to NH₄⁺-N. Although the removal efficiencies of nutrients by CWs differed after introducing PFOA/OS, the removal order was consistent with those before adding PFOA/OS. Plants or/and iron-carbon effectively increased CWs' resistance to PFOA/OS loading and toxicity, and the function of iron-carbon was superior to the plants. In addition, PFOA/OS reduced the abundances of microbes Hydrogenophaga, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Nitrospira, and Candidatus_Accumulibacter that contributed to nutrient removal.

Micro(nano)plastic size and concentration co-differentiate nitrogen transformation, microbiota dynamics, and assembly patterns in constructed wetlands

Micro/nano-sized plastics (MPs/NPs) existing in wastewater system are the potential threats to nitrogen (N) biotransformation. Constructed wetlands (CWs) as wastewater treatment systems are considered the important barriers preventing MPs/NPs from entering the open water. However, little is known about how the accumulation of MPs/NPs affects microbial N transformation, dynamics, assembly, and metabolism of wetland microbiota. Herein, we constructed 12 wetland systems to address the above knowledge gaps over 300-day exposure to different sizes (3 mm - 60 nm) and concentrations (10 - 1000 μg/L) of MPs/NPs. The results showed that MPs/NPs accumulation caused decrease in NH₄⁺-N removal (by 7.6% - 71.2%) and microbial diversity and intriguingly altered microbiota composition (especially in the high-concentration groups) without damage on the high removal efficiency of NO₃^--N and NO₂^--N (66.2% - 99.8%) in all except for the nano-sized plastic-exposed wetlands. Moreover, MPs/NPs exposure induced shift in the strengths of non-random species aggregation and segregation patterns co-differentiated by the size and concentration of MPs/NPs, and MPs/NPs accumulation created size-differentiated alternative niches for nitrogen-transforming bacteria, e.g., canonical nitrifiers (Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas) and denitrifiers (Thauera, Comamonas, and Aquabacterium), which were enriched in MPs groups where denitrifying enzyme-coding genes were also enriched, suggesting potential positive impact of larger plastics on denitrification. Our study highlights MPs/NPs-induced divergence in microbiota dynamics and nitrogen transformation in CWs, and provides important insights into how microbiota structurally and functionally respond to long-term MPs/NPs disturbance.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Risk Assessment of Antibiotics in the Aquatic Environment of the Karst Plateau Wetland of Yangtze River Basin, Southwestern China

In this study, the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of 40 commonly used antibiotics, including 15 sulfonamides (SAs), 9 fluoroquinolones (FQs), 7 macrolides (MCs), 3 tetracyclines (TCs), 2 chloramphenicols (CAPs), and 4 other categories, in the aquatic environment of the karst plateau wetland Caohai of the Yangtze River basin in southwestern China are reported. In total, 27 antibiotics were detected, with the detection rate ranging from 5% to 100%. The total concentration at each site ranged from 21.8 ng/L to 954 ng/L, with the average concentration being 189 ng/L. FQs and MCs were the most predominant categories, contributing 29.3% and 25.0% of the total antibiotic burden. The five most commonly detected antibiotics were ciprofloxacin (CIP), oxytetracycline (OTC), acetyl sulfamethoxazole (ASMZ), norfloxacin (NOR), and florfenicol (FF). The spatial distribution of the total concentration at each site demonstrated a decreasing trend from the southeastern area upstream adjoining the main counties to the northwestern area downstream, indicating that human activities have a great impact. Meanwhile, the natural attenuation rates of different types of antibiotics in the direction of flow ranged from 17.6% to 100%, which implied the natural purification potential of the wetland for antibiotics. The cluster analysis results indicated that domestic sewage and wastewater from agriculture and animal husbandry were the main sources of contamination in the surrounding wetland. Risk quotients (RQs) assessment showed that most of the individuals were at low to medium risk and that the adverse risks posed by mixtures of antibiotics were higher than those posed by the individual antibiotics.

Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal Efficiency and Denitrification Kinetics of Different Substrates in Constructed Wetland

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are generally used for wastewater treatment and removing nitrogen and phosphorus. However, the treatment efficiency of CWs is limited due to the poor performance of various substrates. To find appropriate substrates of CWs for micro-polluted water treatment, zeolite, quartz sand, bio-ceramsite, porous filter, and palygorskite self-assembled composite material (PSM) were used as filtering media to treat slightly polluted water with the aid of autotrophic denitrifying bacteria. PSM exhibited the most remarkable nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance among these substrates. The average removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus of PSM were 66.4%, 58.1%, and 85%, respectively. First-order continuous stirred-tank reactor (first-order-CSTR) and Monod continuous stirred-tank reactor (Monod-CSTR) models were established to investigate the kinetic behavior of denitrification nitrogen removal processes using different substrates. Monod-CSTR model was proven to be an accurate model that could simulate nitrate nitrogen removal performance in vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCWs). Moreover, PSM demonstrated significant pollutant removal capacity with the kinetics coefficient of 2.0021 g/m2 d. Hence, PSM can be considered as a promising new type of substrate for micro-polluted wastewater treatment, and Monod-CSTR model can be employed to simulate denitrification processes.

A review on the landfill leachate treatment technologies and application prospects of three-dimensional electrode technology

With the expansion of urbanisation, the total amount of solid waste produced by urban residents has been increasing, and the problem of municipal solid waste disposal has also been aggravated. Landfill leachate treatment technologies could be divided into three categories: biological, physical and advanced oxidation treatment technology. Among them, advanced oxidation treatment technology has a good effect on the treatment of landfill leachate with little secondary pollution and has excellent application potential. Three-dimensional (3D) electrode technology, as a new type of advanced oxidation technology, could remove refractory pollutants in water and has attracted considerable attention. This article aims to (1) compare existing landfill leachate treatment technologies, (2) summarise 3D electrode technology application scenarios, (3) discuss the advantages of 3D electrode technology in landfill leachate treatment and (4) look ahead the future directions of 3D electrode technology in landfill leachate treatment. We hope that this article will be helpful to researchers who are interested in the field of landfill leachate treatment.

Efficient treatment of mercury(Ⅱ)-containing wastewater in aerated constructed wetland microcosms packed with biochar

Effective removal of mercury (Hg) pollutants from contaminated water/wastewater to prevent severe environmental pollution is of great significance due to the extremely high toxicity of Hg. In this study, granular biochar and gravel (control) were packed into intermittently aerated constructed wetland (CW) microcosms to treat Hg(Ⅱ)-containing wastewater over 100 d. The results showed that the biochar-filled CWs exhibited notably better Hg(Ⅱ) removal than the gravel systems by facilitating chemical and microbial Hg(Ⅱ) reduction and volatilization and promoting plant growth and Hg assimilation. More than ten times more Hg was absorbed by the plants (L. salicaria) in biochar CWs than in the gravel systems, with the roots acting as the major sink. In contrast, substrate binding in a predominantly oxidizable fraction was the dominant pathway for Hg removal in the gravel CWs. Biochar substrates also exhibited higher levels of COD, N and P removal, and Hg(Ⅱ) import impacted the removal of these pollutants only slightly. Filling material played a more crucial role than Hg input in shaping the microbial communities in the CWs. The proportions of some dominant genera, including Arenimonas, Lysobacter, Micropruina and Hydrogenophaga, increased in the presence of Hg, implying their tolerance to Hg toxicity and potential roles in Hg detoxification in the CWs. Granular biochar-based CW has high potential for treating Hg(Ⅱ)-contaminated wastewater.

Swine Wastewater Treatment in Constructed Wetland Systems: Hydraulic and Kinetic Modeling

The use of constructed wetland systems (CWS) is presented as an alternative for the treatment of effluents since these have reduced implementation costs and relative ease of operation. The present research was undertaken to evaluate to study the hydrodynamic and the fitting of first-order mathematical kinetic models for the removal of pollutants in CWS. Three CWS were built, using expanded clay as filter support: one cultivated with Polygonum punctatum (CWSw), another cultivated with Chrysopogon zizanioides (CWSV), and a control unit (CWSc). The actual retention time was 3.12 days in the CWSc, whereas, in the CWSw and CWSv, we observed values of 4.14 and 4.11 days, respectively. The dispersion values were high in all CWS. The values of chemical oxygen demand (COD) across the length of the CWS were used to fit the kinetic models that describe the first-order decay of organic matter over the CWS. The models that showed a better fit to the experimental data were the plug-flow with residual concentration, the continuous stirred tank reactor, and Shepherd’s models.

The Partial Contribution of Constructed Wetland Components (Roots, Gravel, Microorganisms) in the Removal of Phenols: A Mini Review

Constructed wetlands (CW) have attracted growing interest in wastewater treatment research in the last 20 years, and have been investigated intensively worldwide. Many of the basic processes occurring in CWs have been qualitatively established; however, much quantitative knowledge is still lacking. In this mini review, the proportionate contributions of the different system components to removal of contaminants are examined. The main objective of this mini review is to provide a more in-depth assessment of the interactions between the porous bed, plants, and microorganisms during the removal of organic contaminants from the water in a subsurface flow CW system. In addition, a unique technique to study the partial contribution to the total removal of contaminants in a CW is described. Future studies in this field will expand our knowledge of any synergistic or antagonistic interactions between the components and facilitate improved CW construction and operation. Here, phenol will be used as a model industrial organic contaminant to illustrate our current understanding of the contributions of the different components to total removal. I will also discuss the various factors influencing the efficacy of bacteria, whether planktonic or as biofilm (on porous bed or plant roots), in subsurface flow CWs.

Enhanced sequestration of molybdenum(VI) using composite constructed wetlands and responses of microbial communities

The molybdenum (Mo) non-point source pollution in the mining area has an irreversible impact on the surrounding water and soil ecosystems. Herein, three integrated vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs) were constructed to assess the effects of combination substrates and plant on the removal of Mo(VI). Results showed that CW1 with combination substrates and cattail exhibited a favorable removal performance for Mo(VI) at 80.90%. Moreover, most Mo(VI) retained in the CWs was retained in the substrate (58.13-88.04%), and the largest fraction of Mo(VI) retained was the water-soluble fraction on the surface of the combination substrates. Mo(VI) removal was also influenced by the microbial community composition in substrate, especially their co-occurrence networks. The species that showed significant positive correlation with Mo(VI) removal were Planctomycetes, Latescibacteria, Armatimonadetes, and Gemmatimonadetes. Moreover, CWs added plants showed that more co-occurrences interaction between taxa occurs, which means that the wetlands efficiently select recruitment of potential microbial consortia and change the co-occurrences to remove pollution in the substrate. These results could be useful in providing an ecology-based solution for the treatment of Mo(VI) in wastewater, especially in adjusting the microbial communities for Mo(VI) removal at the genetic level.
