Abstract
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a powerful tool for early warning of infectious disease outbreaks. Hence, a rapid and portable pathogen monitoring system is urgent needed for on-site detection. In this work, we first reported synthesis of an artificial modulated wide-spectrum bacteria capture nanoparticle (Arg-CSP@UiO@Fe3O4). Arginine-modified phosphorylated chitosan (Arg-CSP) coating could provide strongly positive charged guanidinium group for pathogen interaction by electrostatic attraction, and UiO-66-NH2 layer could help Arg-CSP graft onto Fe3O4 magnetic particles. The capture efficiency of Arg-CSP@UiO@Fe3O4 reached 92.2 % and 97.3 % for Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (S.epidermidis)within 40 min, in 10 mL sample. To prevent pathogen degradation in sewage, a portable nucleic acid extraction-free method was also developed. UiO-66-NH2 could disintegrate in buffer with high concentration of PO43- for bacterium desorption, and then nucleic acid of the bacteria was released by heating. The DNA template concentration obtained by this method was 779.28 times higher than that of the direct thermal lysis product and 8.63 times higher than that of the commercial kit. Afterwards, multiple detection of bacteria was realized by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Artificial regulated pathogen desorption could prevent non-specific adsorption of nucleic acid by nanoparticles. The detection limit of Arg-CSP@UiO@Fe3O4-LAMP method was 80 cfu/mL for E.coli and 300 cfu/mL for S.epidermidis. The accuracy and reliability of the method was validated by spiked sewage samples. In conclusion, this bio-monitoring system was able to detect multiple bacteria in environment conveniently and have good potential to become an alternative solution for rapid on-site pathogen detection.

Abstract
Nuclear energy holds great potential to facilitate the global energy transition and alleviate the increasing environmental issues due to its high energy density, stable energy output, and carbon-free emission merits. Despite being limited by the insufficient terrestrial uranium reserves, uranium extraction from seawater (UES) can offset the gap. However, the low uranium concentration, the complicated uranium speciation, the competitive metal ions, and the inevitable marine interference remarkably affect the kinetics, capacity, selectivity, and sustainability of UES materials. To date, massive efforts have been made with varying degrees of success to pursue a desirable UES performance on various nanomaterials. Nevertheless, comprehensive and systematic coverage and discussion on the emerging UES materials presenting the fast-growing progress of this field is still lacking. This review thus challenges this position and emphatically focuses on this topic covering the current mainstream UES technologies with the emerging UES materials. Specifically, this review elucidates the causality between the physiochemical properties of UES materials induced by the intellectual design strategies and the UES performances and further dissects the relationships of materials-properties-activities and the corresponding mechanisms in depth. This review is envisaged to inspire innovative ideas and bring technical solutions for developing technically and economically viable UES materials.

Abstract
In order to prevent uranium pollution and recovery uranium resources, it was necessary to find a highly efficient adsorbent for radioactive wastewater treatment. Herein, U(VI) imprinted polyethyleneimine (PEI) incorporated chitosan/layered hydrotalcite composite foam (IPCL) was synthesized by combining ion-imprinting and freeze-drying techniques. IPCL has a high amino/imino content and an ultralight macroporous structure, making it capable of efficiently adsorbing U(VI) and easy to separate; Especially after ion-imprinting, vacancies matching the size of uranyl ions were formed, significantly improving U(VI) selectivity. The adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics were in accordance with the Freundlich model and PSO model respectively, indicating that heterogeneous adsorption of U(VI) by the adsorbents. The adsorption capacity of IPCL-2 for U(VI) reached 278.8. mg/g (under the conditions of optimal pH 5.0, temperature of 298 K, contact time of 2 h, and adsorbent dosage of 0.2 g/L), which is almost double of that for the non-imprinted foam (PCL-2, 138.2 mg/g), indicating that IPCL-2 can intelligently recognize U(VI). The heterogeneous adsorption mechanism of U(VI) by IPCL-2 involves complexation, ion-exchange and isomorphic substitution. The adsorption of U(VI) by IPCL-2 is spontaneous and endothermic. IPCL-2 has excellent adsorption performance for U(VI), and is a promising adsorbent for radioactive pollution control.

Abstract
The generation of uranium-containing wastewater (UCW) during different stages of uranium mining, processing, and utilization presents a significant ecological and biospheric threat. Consequently, it is crucial for both sustainable development and the protection of human health to adopt appropriate methods for the treatment of UCW as well as the separation and enrichment of uranium. This study conducted a comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database for publications related to UCW treatment between 1990 and 2022 to gain insight into current trends in the field. Subsequently, the annual publications, WOSCC categories, geographical distribution, major collaborations, prolific authors, influential journals, and highly cited publications were the subjects of a biliometric analysis that was subsequently carried out. The study findings indicate a significant rise in the overall number of publications in the research field between 1990 and 2022. China, India, and the USA emerged as the primary contributors in terms of publication count. The Chinese Academy of Sciences, the East China University of Technology, and the University of South China were identified as the key research institutions in this field. Furthermore, a majority of the publications in this field were distributed through prestigious journals with high impact factors, such as the Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry. The top 3 journals were Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, Chemical Engineering Journal, and Journal of Hazardous Materials. The keyword co-occurrence and burst analysis revealed that the current research on UCW treatment mainly focuses on adsorption-based treatment methods, environmentally functional materials, uranium recovery, etc. Furthermore, the study of the adsorption efficiency of different adsorbent materials, as well as the strengthening and improvement of adsorbent material selectivity and capacity for the recovery of uranium, represents a research hotspot in the field of UCW treatment in the future. This study conducts a comprehensive overview of the current status and prospects of the UCW treatment, which can provide a valuable reference for gaining insights into the development trajectory of the UCW treatment.

Abstract
Uranium is a naturally existing radioactive element present in the Earth's crust. It exhibits lithophilic characteristics, indicating its tendency to be located near the surface of the Earth and tightly bound to oxygen. It is ecotoxic, hence the need for its removal from the aqueous environment. This paper focuses on the variety of water treatment processes for the removal of uranium from water and this includes physical (membrane separation, adsorption and electrocoagulation), chemical (ion exchange, photocatalysis and persulfate reduction), and biological (bio-reduction and biosorption) approaches. It was observed that membrane filtration and ion exchange are the most popular and promising processes for this application. Membrane processes have high throughput but with the challenge of high power requirements and fouling. Besides high pH sensitivity, ion exchange does not have any major challenges related to its application. Several other unique observations were derived from this review. Chitosan/Chlorella pyrenoidosa composite adsorbent bearing phosphate ligand, hydroxyapatite aerogel and MXene/graphene oxide composite has shown super-adsorbent performance (>1000 mg/g uptake capacity) for uranium. Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, reverse osmosis (RO) membranes and electrocoagulation have been observed not to go below 97% uranium removal/conversion efficiency for most cases reported in the literature. Heat persulfate reduction has been explored quite recently and shown to achieve as high as 86% uranium reduction efficiency. We anticipate that future studies would explore hybrid processes (which are any combinations of multiple conventional techniques) to solve various aspects of the process design and performance challenges.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite has a high affinity to uranium, and element doping can effectively improve its adsorption performance. In this study, magnesia-silica-fluoride co-doped hydroxyapatite composite was prepared by hydrothermal method, and the effect of single-phase and multiphase doping on the structure and properties of the composites was investigated. The results showed that the specific surface area of Mg-Si-F-nHA composites increased by 63.01% after doping. Comparing with nHA, U(VI) adsorption capacity of Si-nHA, Mg-Si-nHA and Mg-Si-F-nHA composites increased by 13.01%, 17.39% and 22.03%, respectively. The adsorption capacity of Mg-Si-F-nHA composite reached 1286.76 mg/g. Adsorbent dosage and pH obviously affected U(VI) adsorption, and the experimental data can be fitted well by PSO and Sips models. The physicochemical characterization before and after adsorption suggested that complexation, ion exchange and precipitation participated in uranium adsorption. In conclusion, different elements doping can effectively improve the uranium adsorption properties of hydroxyapatite composites.

Insights into the long-term immobilization performances and mechanisms of CMC-Fe 0/FeS with different sulfur sources for uranium under anoxic and oxic aging. Abstract
Nanoscale zerovalent iron (Fe0)-based materials have been demonstrated to be a effective method for the U(VI) removal. However, limited research has been conducted on the long-term immobilization efficiency and mechanism of Fe0-based materials for U(VI), which are essential for achieving safe handling and disposal of U(VI) on a large scale. In this study, the prepared carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sulfurization dual stabilized Fe0 (CMC-Fe0/FeS) exhibited excellent long-term immobilization performances for U(VI) under both anoxic and oxic conditions, with the immobilization efficiencies were respectively reached over 98.0 % and 94.8 % after 180 days of aging. Most importantly, different from the immobilization mechanisms of the fresh CMC-Fe0/FeS for U(VI) (the adsorption effect of -COOH and -OH groups, coordination effect with sulfur species, as well as reduction effect of Fe0), the re-mobilized U(VI) were finally re-immobilized by the formed FeOOH and Fe3O4 on the aged CMC-Fe0/FeS. Under anoxic conditions, more Fe3O4 was produced, which may be the main reason for the long-term immobilization U(VI). Under oxic conditions, the production of Fe3O4 and FeOOH were relatively high, which both played significant roles in re-immobilizing U(VI) through surface complexation, reduction and incorporation effects.

Abstract
In this study, an amorphous silica reinforced, phosphoric-crosslinked chitosan foam (P-CTS@SixOy) was prepared. The introduction of amorphous silica not only increased the affinity of the adsorbent for uranium, but also improved the stability of the material. The number of active sites of P-CTS@SixOy was increased by the introduction of phosphate groups. The material exhibited excellent uranium adsorption performance with the removal capacity and efficiency of 850.5 mg g-1 and 98.1 %, respectively. After regenerations, the morphology of P-CTS@SixOy still maintained, and the uranium adsorption efficiency remained above 90 %, manifesting the excellent cycle performance of P-CTS@SixOy. In the dynamic adsorption experiment, P-CTS@SixOy successfully concentrated the volume of uranium-containing solution, and exhibited excellent uranium adsorption performance. The analysis of kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics manifested that the uranium adsorption behavior of P-CTS@SixOy was a spontaneous, endothermic, monolayer chemical adsorption process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer were used to characterized the P-CTS@SixOy before and after adsorption, which demonstrated that the main interaction mechanism between uranium and P-CTS@SixOy was the complexation. These studies indicated the huge application prospect of P-CTS@SixOy in the treatment of large-scale uranium-containing wastewater.

Abstract
A novel polyvinyl alcohol-carbon nanotube containing an imidazolyl ionic liquid/chitosan composite hydrogel (termed CBCS) was prepared for highly selective uranium adsorption from seawater. The results show that CBCS has good adsorption properties for uranium within the pH range of 5.0-8.0. Kinetics and thermodynamics experiments show that the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of CBCS to U(VI) is 496.049 mg/g (288 K, pH = 6.0), indicating a spontaneous exothermic reaction. Mechanism analysis shows that the hydroxyl group, amino group, and CN bond on the surface of CBCS directly participate in uranium adsorption and that the dense pores on the surface of CBCS play an important role in uranium adsorption. The competitive adsorption experiment shows that CBCS has excellent uranium adsorption selectivity. In addition, CBCS exhibits good reusability. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, the uranium adsorption rate of CBCS can still reach >98 %. Hence, CBCS has excellent potential for uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract
In order to improve the removal rate of uranium and reduce the harm of radioactive pollution, a physically crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol/phosphorylated chitosan (PPP) hydrogel electrode was designed by freezing thawing method. The results show that PPP hydrogel has a good adsorption effect on uranium, and 200 mL of uranium tailings leachate is absorbed, and the treatment efficiency reaches 100 % within 15 min. PPP hydrogel can adapt to a wide range of pH conditions and exhibit excellent adsorption efficiency in the range of 3-9. At the same time, PPP hydrogel maintains an adsorption efficiency of over 85 % for 950 mg/L uranium solution. This lays the foundation for the practical application of PPP hydrogel. In addition, PPP hydrogel also exhibits good repeatability, after 7 cycles, the material still retains 95 % of its initial performance. The synergistic effect of various functional groups such as phosphate, hydroxyl, and ammonium in the material is the main mechanism of PPP's adsorption capacity for uranium. Furthermore, electrochemical adsorption method significantly enhances the adsorption performance of PPP hydrogel.

Abstract
The radioactive contamination from the excessive discharge of uranium-containing wastewater seriously threatens environmental safety and human health. Herein, macroporous and ultralight polyethyleneimine-grafted chitosan/nano-TiO2 composite foam (PCT) with antibacterial activity was synthesized, which could quickly remove U(VI) from solution. Among different PCT adsorbents, PCT-2 had the best adsorption performance for U(VI), which could be due to its honeycomb macroporous structures and the presence of abundant amino/imine groups. The kinetics and adsorption isotherms data were found in agreement with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively, indicating chemisorption or complexation as the main adsorption mechanism. The saturated adsorption capacity of PCT-2 for U(VI) reaches 259.91 mg/g at pH 5.0 and 298 K. The PCT-2 also presents good selectivity for U(VI) with the coefficient (βU/M) order of Na+ > K+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+ > Mn2+ > Al3+ > Fe3+ > Cu2+. The adsorption mechanism was explored using FT-IR and XPS analysis, indicating that amino/imine groups and hydroxyl groups are responsible for U(VI) complexation. Thermodynamic calculations show that U(VI) adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous. The ease of preparation, excellent adsorption performance and environmental friendliness of PCT-2 make it a novel adsorbent with antibacterial activity for radioactive contamination control.

Selective, rapid extraction of uranium from aqueous solution by porous chitosan-phosphorylated chitosan-amidoxime macroporous resin composite and differential charge calculation. Int J Biol Macromol 2023; 253:126661. Abstract
Herein, a new porous chitosan-phosphorylated chitosan-amidoxime macroporous resin composite (PCAR) was designed and synthesized for the rapid and selective extraction of uranium resources from aqueous solution. This study showed that PCAR exhibited excellent adsorption toward uranium in a pH range of 5-9. The dynamic adsorption process aligned with the quasi-second-order kinetic model and corresponded to the chemical adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was 561.28 mg·g-1 at pH 6 and 308 K. Mechanism analysis showed that the synergistic effect of the amidoxime group (-(NH2)C=N-OH), PO, and -NH2 on the PCAR surface improved the uranium adsorption performance. The differential charge density indicated that the amidoxime and phosphate groups provide lone-pair electrons for the adsorption of UO22+ and their synergistic effect improves the UO22+ adsorption performance of PCAR. The uranium distribution coefficients of PCAR and CAR are 4.6 and 2.4 times those of vanadium, respectively. These results indicate that phosphorylation can ameliorate the disadvantage of competitive vanadium adsorption of the amidoxime adsorbent. In addition, PCAR exhibits good reusability and stable adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Hence, PCAR has excellent potential for uranium extraction from aqueous solution.

Synthesis and fabrication of segregative and durable MnO 2@chitosan composite aerogel beads for uranium(VI) removal from wastewater. WATER RESEARCH 2023; 247:120819. Abstract
To address the imperative need for efficient removal of uranium-containing wastewater and mitigate radioactive contamination risks associated with nuclear energy, the development of materials with high removal efficiency and facile separation is crucial. This study designed and synthesised MnO2@chitosan (CTS) composite aerogel beads by in-situ growing δ-MnO2 on porous CTS aerogel beads. This approach not only mitigates the agglomeration of MnO2 nanospheres but also significantly enhances the porous structure and surface area of MnO2@CTS. These cost-effective and eco-friendly millimeter-scale spherical aerogels exhibited convenient separation properties after adsorption. These characteristics help mitigate the risk of equipment seam blockage and secondary pollution that are often associated with powdered adsorbents. Additionally, MnO2@CTS exhibited remarkable mechanical strength (stress approximately 0.55 MPa at 60 % strain), enabling rapid separation and easy regeneration while maintaining high adsorption performance even after five cycles. Significantly, MnO2@CTS exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 410.7 mg/g at pH 6 and 298 K, surpassing reported values for most CTS/MnO2-based adsorbents. The chemisorption process of U(VI) on MnO2@CTS followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Dubinin-Radushkevish models. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis further confirmed the reduction of U(VI) to U(V/IV). These findings highlight the substantial potential of MnO2@CTS aerogel beads for U(VI) removal from aqueous solutions, positioning them as a promising solution for addressing U(VI) contamination in wastewater.

Abstract
Uranium mining, smelting, and nuclear industries generate a considerable amount of wastewater containing uranium. To treat this wastewater effectively and inexpensively, a novel hydrogel material (cUiO-66/CA) was developed by co-immobilizing UiO-66 with calcium alginate and hydrothermal carbon. Batch tests were conducted to determine the optimal adsorption conditions for uranium using cUiO-66/CA, and the adsorption behavior was spontaneous and endothermic, confirming the quasi-second-order dynamics model and the Langmuir model. At a temperature of 308.15 K and pH = 4, the maximum adsorption capacity of uranium was 337.77 mg g-1. The surface appearance and interior structure of the material were analyzed using SEM, FTIR, XPS, BET, and XRD techniques. The results indicated two possible uranium adsorption processes of cUiO-66/CA: (1) Ca2+ and UO22+ ion exchange process and (2) coordination of uranyl ions with hydroxyl and carboxyl ions to form complexes. cUiO-66/CA exhibited strong selectivity for U (VI) in a multicomponent mixed solution and uranium-containing wastewater, with uranium removal rates of 99.03 % and 81.45 %, respectively. The hydrogel material demonstrated excellent acid resistance, and the uranium adsorption rate exceeded 98 % in the pH range of 3-8. Therefore, this study suggests that cUiO-66/CA has the potential to treat uranium-containing wastewater in a broad pH range.

Abstract
A novel chitosan-based composite with rich active sites was synthesized by uniformly dispersing biochar into the cross-linked network structure formed by chitosan and polyethyleneimine. Due to the synergistic effect of biochar (minerals) and chitosan-polyethyleneimine interpenetrating network (amino and hydroxyl), the chitosan-based composite possessed an excellent adsorption performance for uranium(VI). It could rapidly (<60 min) achieve a high adsorption efficiency (96.7 %) for uranium(VI) from water and a high static saturated adsorption capacity (633.4 mg/g), which was far superior to other chitosan-based adsorbents. Moreover, the separation for uranium(VI) on the chitosan-based composite was suitable for a variety of actual water environments and the adsorption efficiencies all exceeded 70 % in different water bodies. The soluble uranium(VI) could be completely removed by the chitosan-based composite in the continuous adsorption process, which could meet the permissible limits of the World Health Organization. In sum, the novel chitosan-based composite could overcome the bottleneck of current chitosan-based adsorption materials and become a potential adsorbent for the remediation of actual uranium(VI) contaminated wastewater.

Abstract
Amidoxime compounds have been widely used in metal separation and recovery because of their excellent chelating properties to metal ions, especially to uranium (VI). In this study, N, N-bis (2-hydroxyethyl) malonamide was obtained from ethanolamine and dimethyl malonate, and used to prepare a two-dimensional network polymer, then the obtained polymer was immobilized in an environmentally friendly chitosan biomembrane, which enhanced its stability and hydrophobicity, meanwhile the amidoxime functionalization was achieved by oximation reaction of bromoacetonitrile, the application of the material further extends to uranium (VI) separation in solutions. Due to the synergistic action of amide group and amidoxime group, poly (ethanolamine-malonamide) based amidoxime biomembranes (PEA-AOM) showed extraordinary adsorption effect on uranium (VI), among which the saturation adsorption capacity of PEA-AOM-2 was 748.64 mg/g. PEA-AOM-2 also had good reusability (following five cycles of adsorption-desorption, the recovery rate maintained at 88%) and selectivity for uranium (VI), showing satisfactory results in competitive ion coexistence system and simulated seawater experiments. This study demonstrated that PEA-AOM-2 provided a new option for uranium (VI) separation in complex environment and low-concentration uranium background.

Abstract
In this work, a novel g-C3N4 filled, phosphoric-crosslinked chitosan gel bead (P-CS@CN) was successfully prepared to adsorb U(VI) from water. The separation performance of chitosan was improved by introducing more functional groups. At pH 5 and 298 K, the adsorption efficiency and adsorption capacity could reach 98.0 % and 416.7 mg g-1, respectively. After adsorption, the morphological structure of P-CS@CN did not change and adsorption efficiency remained above 90 % after 5 cycles. P-CS@CN exhibited an excellent applicability in water environment based on dynamic adsorption experiments. Thermodynamic analyses demonstrated the value of ΔG, manifesting the spontaneity of U(VI) adsorption process on P-CS@CN. The positive values of ΔH and ΔS showed that the U(VI) removal behavior of P-CS@CN was an endothermic reaction, indicating that the increase of temperature was great benefit to the removal. The adsorption mechanism of P-CS@CN gel bead could be summarized as the complexation reaction with the surface functional groups. This study not only developed an efficient adsorbent for the treatment of radioactive pollutants, but also provided a simple and feasible strategy for the modification of chitosan-based adsorption materials.

Abstract
Doping uranium into a room-temperature stable Fe3O4 lattice structure effectively reduces its migration. However, the synergistic or competitive effects of coexisting ions in an aqueous solution directly affect the uranium mineralization efficiency and the structural stability of uranium-bearing Fe3O4. The effects of calcium, carbonate, and phosphate on uranium electromineralization were investigated via batch experiments and theoretical calculations. Calcium incorporated into the Fe3O4 lattice increased the level and stability of doped uranium in Fe3O4. Uranium and calcium occupied the octahedral and tetrahedral sites of Fe3O4, respectively; the formation energy was only -10.23 eV due to strong hybridization effects between Fe1s, U4f, O2p, and Ca3d orbitals. Compared to the uranium-doped Fe3O4, uranium leaching ratios decreased by 19.2 % and 48.9 % under strongly acidic and alkaline conditions after 120 days. However, high concentrations of phosphate inhibited Fe3O4 crystallization. These results should provide new avenues for the development of multi-metal co-doping technologies and mineralization optimization to treat uranium-containing complex wastewater.

Abstract
A novel chitosan-based porous composite adsorbent with multifunctional groups, such as phosphoric acid, amidoxime, and quaternary ammonium groups, was prepared to improve the adsorption rate and competitive uranium‑vanadium adsorption of amidoxime group adsorbents. The maximum uranium adsorption capacity of PACNC was 962.226 mg g-1 at 308 K and pH = 7. The maximum adsorption rate constant of PACNC for uranium was 2.83E-2 g mg-1 min-1, which is 2.38 times that of ACNC (1.19E-2 g mg-1 min-1). Moreover, the adsorption equilibrium time was shortened from 300 (ACNC) to 50 (PACNC) min. In simulated and real seawater, the Kd and adsorption capacity of PACNC for uranium were approximately 8 and 6.62 times those for vanadium, respectively. These results suggest that phosphorylation significantly improved the competitive adsorption of uranium‑vanadium and uranium adsorption rate. PACNC also exhibited good recycling performance and maintained stable adsorption capacity after five cycles. DFT calculations were used to analyze and calculate the possible co-complex structure of PACNC and uranium. The binding structure of phosphate and amidoxime is the most stable, and its synergistic effect effectively improves the competitive adsorption of uranium-vanadium of amidoxime. All the results demonstrated that PACNC has substantial application potential for uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract
The efficient adsorption of radioactive elements from nuclear wastewater is an important research topic in the environmental field. The unique three-dimensional porous structure of aerogels has great potential in the field of adsorption. Phosphoric-modified aloe vera/chitosan aerogel (CS/AL-AP) was prepared from chitosan, phosphoric acid, and aloe powder by vacuum freeze-drying self-assembly. The maximum adsorption of uranyl ions by CS/AL-AP was found to be 322.34 mg/g at pH 6, adsorption time of 120 min, solid-to-liquid ratio of 0.125 g/L, reaction temperature of 303 K, and initial uranyl ion concentration of 50 mg/L. The adsorption process is consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model and the quasi-secondary kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process is monolayer adsorption. The type of adsorption is mainly chemisorption. FTIR and XPS analyses indicate that the adsorption of U(VI) by CS/AL-AP results from the combined action of coordination or chelation of amino, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups. In addition, CS/AL-AP shows excellent adsorption capacity in the presence of complex co-existing ions. After five adsorption-desorption experiments, the adsorption capacity of CS/AL-AP for uranyl ions remained at a high level. It indicates that CS/AL-AP has good stability and recoverability. The results indicate that CS/AL-AP has excellent potential in the field of uranium removal.

Abstract
Different activities related to uranium mining and nuclear industry may have a negative impact on the environment. Bioremediation of nuclear pollutants using microorganisms is an effective, safe, and economic method. The present study compared the uranium biosorption efficiency of two immobilized algae: Nostoc sp. (cyanophyte) and Scenedesmus sp. (chlorophyte). Effects of metal concentration, contact time, pH, and biosorbent dosage were also studied. The maximum biosorption capacity (60%) by Nostoc sp. was obtained at 300 mg/l uranium solution, 60 min, pH 4.5, and 4.2 g/l algal dosage, whereas Scenedesmus sp. maximally absorbed uranium (65 %) at 150 mg/l uranium solution, 40 min, pH 4.5, and 5.6 g/l of algal dosage. The interaction of metal ions as Na2SO4, FeCl3, CuCl2, NiCl2, CoCl2, CdCl2, and AlCl3 did not support the uranium biosorption by algae. The obtained data was adapted to the linearized form of the Langmuir isotherm model. The experimental qmax values were 130 and 75 mg/g for Nostoc sp. and Scenedesmus sp., respectively. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more applicable, as the calculated parameters were close to the experimental data. The biosorbents were also characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The results suggest the applicability of algae, in their immobilized form, for recovery and biosorption of uranium from aqueous solution.

Abstract
In order to explore a suitable uranium adsorbent with the advantages of low-cost, recyclability and high efficiency, porous coal fly ash aerogels with different size of coal fly ash were synthesized. Among them, PCFAA-1250 (prepared with 1250 mesh coal fly ash (CFA)) showed better adsorption performance and the maximum adsorption efficiency even approached 96.5% (C0 = 10 mg L-1, m/V = 1.0 g L-1, T = 298 K, t = 24 h and pH = 3.0), which was higher than most of previous adsorbents. Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models were more likely to be used to determine the removal behavior of uranium on PCFAA, illustrating that the adsorption reaction was uniform chemisorption. Meanwhile, the adsorption process on PCFAA was spontaneous. Notably, the desorption efficiencies of all of PCFAA were more than 80% after five cycles, which suggested that PCFAA possessed good recyclability, especially PCFAA-1250. Besides, the adsorption mechanism was further revealed via XPS and the uranium ions were immobilized on the surface of adsorbents through complexation. Based on above conclusions, it could be concluded that PCFAA-1250 had the potential to be a candidate for the extraction of uranium from wastewater.

Abstract
Uranium is an indispensable part of the nuclear industry that benefits us, but its consequent pollution of water bodies also makes a far-reaching impact on human society. The rapid, efficient and convenient extraction of uranium from water is to be a top priority. Thanks to the super hydrophilic and fast adsorption rate of microgel, it has been the ideal adsorbent in water; however, it was too difficult to recover the microgel after adsorption, which limited its practical applications. Here, we developed a uranyl-ion affine and recyclable microgel container that has not only the rapid swelling rate of microgel particles but also allows the detection of the adsorption saturation process by the naked eye.
