Dynamic molecular weaving in a two-dimensional hydrogen-bonded organic framework

Single crystals of purely organic free-standing two-dimensional woven polymer networks

The aesthetic and practicality of macroscopic fabrics continue to encourage chemists to weave molecules into interlaced patterns with the aim of providing emergent physical and chemical properties when compared with their starting materials. Weaving purely organic molecular threads into flawless two-dimensional patterns remains a formidable challenge, even though its feasibility has been proposed on several occasions. Herein we describe the synthesis of a flawless, purely organic, free-standing two-dimensional woven polymer network driven by dative B-N bonds. Single crystals of this woven polymer network were obtained and its well-defined woven topology was revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Free-standing two-dimensional monolayer nanosheets of the woven polymer network were exfoliated from the layered crystals using Scotch Magic Tape. The surface features of the nanosheets were investigated by integrated low-dose and cryogenic electron microscopy imaging techniques. These findings demonstrate the precise construction of purely organic woven polymer networks and highlight the unique opportunities for the application of woven topologies in two-dimensional organic materials.

Flexible hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs): opportunities and challenges

Flexible behavior is one of the most fascinating features of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), which represent an emerging class of porous materials that are self-assembled via H-bonding between organic building units. Due to their unique flexibility, HOFs can undergo structural changes or transformations in response to various stimuli (physical or chemical). Taking advantage of this unique structural feature, flexible HOFs show potential in multifunctional applications such as gas storage/separation, molecular recognition, sensing, proton conductivity, biomedicine, etc. While some other flexible porous materials have been extensively studied, the dynamic behavior of HOFs remains relatively less explored. This perspective highlights the inherent flexible properties of HOFs, discusses their different flexible behaviors, including pore size/shape changes, interpenetration/stacking manner, H-bond breaking/reconstruction, and local dynamic behavior, and highlights their potential applications. We believe that this perspective will not only contribute to HOF chemistry and materials science, but will also facilitate the ongoing extensive research on dynamic porous materials.

In Situ X-Ray Techniques Unraveling Charge Distribution Induced by Halogen Bonds in Solvates of an Iodo-Substituted Squaraine Dye

The importance of halogen bonds (XBs) in the regulation of material properties through a variation in the electrostatic potential of the halogen atom is not attracted much attention. Herein, this study utilizes in situ single crystal X-ray diffraction and synchrotron-based X-ray techniques to investigate the cooling-triggered irreversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation of the DMF solvated iodo-substituted squaraine dye (SQD-I). Transformation is observed to be mediated by solvent-involved XB formation and strengthening of electrostatic interaction between adjacent SQD-I molecules. By immersing a DMF solvate in acetonitrile a solvent exchange without loss of long-range ordering is observed. This is attributed to conservation of the molecular charge distribution of SQD-I molecules during the process. The different solvates can be used in combination for temperature-dependent image encryption. This work emphasizes the changes caused by XB formation to the electrostatic potentials of halogen containing molecules and their influence on material properties and presents the potential utility of XBs in the design of soft-porous crystals and luminescent materials.

Epitaxially Grown Mechanically Robust 2D Thin Film of Secondary Interactions Led Molecularly Woven Material

Molecularly woven materials with striking mechanical resilience, and 2D controlled topologies like textiles, fishing nets, and baskets are highly anticipated. Molecular weaving exclusively apprehended by the secondary interactions expanding to laterally grown 2D self-assemblies with retained crystalline arrangement is stimulating. The interlacing entails planar molecules screwed together to form 2D woven thin films. Here, secondary interactions led 2D interlaced molecularly woven material (2°MW) built by 1D helical threads of organic chromophores twisted together via end-to-end CH···O connections, held strongly at inter-crossing by multiple OH···N interactions to prevent slippage is presented. Whereas, 1D helical threads with face-to-face O-H···O connections sans interlacing led the non-woven material (2°NW). The polarity-driven directionality in 2°MW led the water-actuated epitaxial growth of 2D-sheets to lateral thin films restricted to nano-scale thickness. The molecularly woven thin film is self-healing, flexible, and mechanically resilient in nature, while maintaining the crystalline regularity is attributed to the supple secondary interactions (2°).

Supramolecular Entanglement in a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Enables Flexible-Robust Porosity for Highly Efficient Purification of Natural Gas

The development of porous materials with flexible-robust characteristics shows some unique advantages to target high performance for gas separation, but remains a daunting challenge to achieve so far. Herein, we report a carboxyl-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (ZJU-HOF-8a) with flexible-robust porosity for efficient purification of natural gas. ZJU-HOF-8a features a four-fold interpenetrated structure with dia topology, wherein abundant supramolecular entanglements are formed between the adjacent subnetworks through weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds. This structural configuration could not only stabilize the whole framework to establish the permanent porosity, but also enable the framework to show some flexibility due to its weak intermolecular interactions (so-called flexible-robust framework). The flexible-robust porosity of ZJU-HOF-8a was exclusively confirmed by gas sorption isotherms and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, showing that the flexible pore pockets can be opened by C3H8 and n-C4H10 molecules rather by C2H6 and CH4. This leads to notably higher C3H8 and n-C4H10 uptakes with enhanced selectivities than C2H6 over CH4 under ambient conditions, affording one of the highest n-C4H10/CH4 selectivities. The gas-loaded single-crystal structures coupled with theoretical simulations reveal that the loading of n-C4H10 can induce an obvious framework expansion along with pore pocket opening to improve n-C4H10 uptake and selectivity, while not for C2H6 adsorption. This work suggests an effective strategy of designing flexible-robust HOFs for improving gas separation properties.

Structural Design and Energy and Environmental Applications of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: A Systematic Review

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are emerging porous materials that show high structural flexibility, mild synthetic conditions, good solution processability, easy healing and regeneration, and good recyclability. Although these properties give them many potential multifunctional applications, their frameworks are unstable due to the presence of only weak and reversible hydrogen bonds. In this work, the development history and synthesis methods of HOFs are reviewed, and categorize their structural design concepts and strategies to improve their stability. More importantly, due to the significant potential of the latest HOF-related research for addressing energy and environmental issues, this work discusses the latest advances in the methods of energy storage and conversion, energy substance generation and isolation, environmental detection and isolation, degradation and transformation, and biological applications. Furthermore, a discussion of the coupling orientation of HOF in the cross-cutting fields of energy and environment is presented for the first time. Finally, current challenges, opportunities, and strategies for the development of HOFs to advance their energy and environmental applications are discussed.

Charge-Assisted Ionic Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: Designable and Stabilized Multifunctional Materials

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a class of crystalline framework materials assembled by hydrogen bonds. HOFs have the advantages of high crystallinity, mild reaction conditions, good solution processability, and reproducibility. Coupled with the reversibility and flexibility of hydrogen bonds, HOFs can be assembled into a wide diversity of crystalline structures. Since the bonding energy of hydrogen bonds is lower than that of ligand and covalent bonds, the framework of HOFs is prone to collapse after desolventisation and the stability is not high, which limits the development and application of HOFs. In recent years, numerous stable and functional HOFs have been developed by π-π stacking, highly interpenetrated networks, charge-assisted, ligand-bond-assisted, molecular weaving, and covalent cross-linking. Charge-assisted ionic HOFs introduce electrostatic attraction into HOFs to improve stability while enriching structural diversity and functionality. In this paper, we review the development, the principles of rational design and assembly of charge-assisted ionic HOFs, and introduces the different building block construction modes of charge-assisted ionic HOFs. Highlight the applications of charge-assisted ionic HOFs in gas adsorption and separation, proton conduction, biological applications, etc., and prospects for the diverse design of charge-assisted ionic HOFs structures and multifunctional applications.

Reticular synthesis of 8-connected carboxyl hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks for white-light-emission

The rational design and construction of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are crucial for enabling their practical applications, but controlling their structure and preparation as intended remains challenging. Inspired by reticular chemistry, two novel blue-emitting NKM-HOF-1 and NKM-HOF-2 were successfully constructed based on two judiciously designed peripherally extended pentiptycene carboxylic acids, namely H8PEP-OBu and H8PEP-OMe, respectively. The large pores within these two HOFs can adsorb fluorescent molecules such as diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and 9-anthraldehyde (AnC) to form HOFs ⊃ DPP/AnC composites, subsequently used in the fabrication of white-light-emitting devices (WLEDs). Specifically, two WLEDs were assembled by coating NKM-HOF-1 ⊃ DPP-0.13/AnC-3.5 and NKM-HOF-2 ⊃ DPP-0.12/AnC-3 on a 330 nm ultraviolet LED bulb, respectively. The corresponding CIE coordinates were (0.29, 0.33) and (0.32, 0.34), along with corresponding color temperatures of 7815 K and 6073 K. This work effectively demonstrates the feasibility of employing reticular chemistry strategies to predict and design HOFs with specific topologies for targeted applications.

Macrocycle-Based Hierarchically Porous Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are porous crystalline materials. The pores in HOFs are usually non-covalent extrinsic pores constructed through the formation of the framework. Supramolecular macrocycles with intrinsic pores in their structures are good candidates for constructing HOFs with intrinsic pores from the macrocycles themselves, thus leading to hierarchically porous structures. Combining the macrocycle and HOFs will endow these hierarchically porous materials with enhanced properties and special functionalities. This review summarizes recent advances in macrocycle-based HOFs, including the macrocycles used for constructing HOFs, the hierarchically porous structures of the HOFs, and the applications induced by the hierarchically HOFs porous structures. This review provides insights for future research on macrocycle-based hierarchically porous HOFs and the appropriate applications of the unique structures.

Hydrophilic Cocrystals with Water Switched Luminescence

Utilizing water molecules to regulate the luminescence properties of solid materials is highly challenging. Herein, we develop a strategy to produce water-triggered luminescence-switching cocrystals by coassembling hydrophilic donors with electron-deficient acceptors, where 1,2,4,5-Tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) was used as the electron acceptor and pyridyl benzimidazole derivatives were used as the electron donors enabling multiple hydrogen-bonds. Two cocrystals, namely 2PYTC and 4PYTC were obtained and showed heat-activated emission, and such emission could be quenched or weakened by adding water molecules. The cocrystal structure exhibited the donor molecule that can form multiple hydro bonds with water and acceptor molecules due to the many nitrogen atoms of them. The analyses of the photophysical data, powder X-ray diffraction, and other data confirmed the reversible fluorescence "on-off" effects were caused by eliminating and adding water molecules in the crystal lattice. The density functional theory calculations indicate that the vibration of the O-H bond of water molecules in the cocrystal can absorb the excitation energy and suppress fluorescence. Furthermore, the obtained cocrystals also showed temperature, humidity, and H+ /NH4 + responsive emission behavior, which allows their applications as thermal and humidity sensors, and multiple information encryptions. This research paves the way for preparing intelligent hydrophilic organic cocrystal luminescent materials.

Stimuli-fluorochromic smart organic materials

Smart materials based on stimuli-fluorochromic π-conjugated solids (SFCSs) have aroused significant interest due to their versatile and exciting properties, leading to advanced applications. In this review, we highlight the recent developments in SFCS-based smart materials, expanding beyond organometallic compounds and light-responsive organic luminescent materials, with a discussion on the design strategies, exciting properties and stimuli-fluorochromic mechanisms along with their potential applications in the exciting fields of encryption, sensors, data storage, display, green printing, etc. The review comprehensively covers single-component and multi-component SFCSs as well as their stimuli-fluorochromic behaviors under external stimuli. We also provide insights into current achievements, limitations, and major challenges as well as future opportunities, aiming to inspire further investigation in this field in the near future. We expect this review to inspire more innovative research on SFCSs and their advanced applications so as to promote further development of smart materials and devices.

Integrating Levels of Hierarchical Organization in Porous Organic Molecular Materials

Porous organic molecular materials (POMMs) are an emergent class of molecular-based materials characterized by the formation of extended porous frameworks, mainly held by non-covalent interactions. POMMs represent a variety of chemical families, such as hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, porous organic salts, porous organic cages, C - H⋅⋅⋅π microporous crystals, supramolecular organic frameworks, π-organic frameworks, halogen-bonded organic framework, and intrinsically porous molecular materials. In some porous materials such as zeolites and metal organic frameworks, the integration of multiscale has been adopted to build materials with multifunctionality and optimized properties. Therefore, considering the significant role of hierarchy in porous materials and the growing importance of POMMs in the realm of synthetic porous materials, we consider it appropriate to dedicate for the first time a critical review covering both topics. Herein, we will provide a summary of literature examples showcasing hierarchical POMMs, with a focus on their main synthetic approaches, applications, and the advantages brought forth by introducing hierarchy.

Multistate structures in a hydrogen-bonded polycatenation non-covalent organic framework with diverse resistive switching behaviors

The inherent structural flexibility and reversibility of non-covalent organic frameworks have enabled them to exhibit switchable multistate structures under external stimuli, providing great potential in the field of resistive switching (RS), but not well explored yet. Herein, we report the 0D+1D hydrogen-bonded polycatenation non-covalent organic framework (HOF-FJU-52), exhibiting diverse and reversible RS behaviors with the high performance. Triggered by the external stimulus of electrical field E at room temperature, HOF-FJU-52 has excellent resistive random-access memory (RRAM) behaviors, comparable to the state-of-the-art materials. When cooling down below 200 K, it was transferred to write-once-read-many-times memory (WORM) behaviors. The two memory behaviors exhibit reversibility on a single crystal device through the temperature changes. The RS mechanism of this non-covalent organic framework has been deciphered at the atomic level by the detailed single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, demonstrating that the structural dual-flexibility both in the asymmetric hydrogen bonded dimers within the 0D loops and in the infinite π-π stacking column between the loops and chains contribute to reversible structure transformations between multi-states and thus to its dual RS behaviors.

Stimuli-Responsive, Dynamic Supramolecular Organic Frameworks

Supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) are a class of three-dimensional, potentially porous materials obtained by the self-assembly of organic building blocks held together by weak interactions such as hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds, π⋅⋅⋅π stacking and dispersion forces. SOFs are being extensively studied for their potential applications in gas storage and separation, catalysis, guest encapsulation and sensing. The supramolecular forces that guide their self-assembly endow them with an attractive combination of crystallinity and flexibility, providing intelligent dynamic materials that can respond to external stimuli in a reversible way. The present review article will focus on SOFs showing dynamic behaviour when exposed to different stimuli, highlighting fundamental aspects such as the combination of tectons and supramolecular interactions involved in the framework formation, structure-property relationship and their potential applications.

The future of metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks: rational synthesis and customized applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are designable and tunable functional crystalline porous materials that have been explored for applications such as catalysis, chemical sensing, water harvesting, gas storage, and separation. On the basis of reticular chemistry, the rational design and synthesis of MOFs and COFs allows us to have unprecedented control over their structural features and functionalities. Given the vast number of possible MOF and COF structures and the flexibility of modifying them, it remains challenging to navigate the infinite chemical space solely through a trial-and-error process. This Opinion Article provides a brief perspective of the current state and future prospects of MOFs and COFs. We envision that emerging technologies based on machine learning and robotics, such as high-throughput computational screening and fully automatic synthesis, can potentially address some challenges facing this field, accelerating the discovery of porous framework materials and the development of rational synthetic strategies for customized applications.

Woven organic crystals

Woven architectures are prepared by physical entanglement of fibrous components to expand one-dimensional material into two-dimensional sheets with enhanced strength and resilience to wear. Here, we capitalize on the elastic properties of long organic crystals with a high aspect ratio to prepare an array of centimeter-size woven network structures. While being robust to mechanical impact, the woven patches are also elastic due to effective stress dissipation by the elasticity of the individual warp and weft crystals. The thermal stability of component crystals translates into favorable thermoelastic properties of the porous woven structures, where the network remains elastic over a range of 300 K. By providing means for physical entanglement of organic crystals, the weaving circumvents the natural limitation of the small size of slender organic crystals that is determined by their natural growth, thereby expanding the prospects for applications of organic crystals from one-dimensional entities to expandable, two-dimensional robust structures.

A Large-Area Patterned Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Electrochromic Film and Device

Fabrication of a patterned hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) films on a large scale is an extreme challenge. In this work, a large area HOF film (30 × 30 cm2 ) is prepared via an efficient and low-cost electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) approach on the un-modified conductive substrates directly. Combining the ESD with a template method, variously patterned HOF films can be easily produced, including deer- and horse-shaped films. The obtained films exhibit excellent electrochromic performance with multicolor change from yellow to green and violet, and two-band regulation at 550 and 830 nm. Benefiting from the inherently present channels of HOF materials and the additional film porosity created by ESD, the PFC-1 film could quickly change color (within 10 s). Furthermore, the large-area patterned EC device is constructed based on the above film to prove practical potential application. The presented ESD method can be extended to other HOF materials; thus, this work paves a feasible path for constructing large-area patterned HOF films for practical optoelectronic applications.

Macrocycle Self-Assembly Hydrogel for High-Efficient Oil-Water Separation

Supramolecular hydrogels involved macrocycles have been explored widely in recent years, but it remains challenging to develop hydrogel based on solitary macrocycle with super gelation capability. Here, the construction of lantern[33 ]arene-based hydrogel with low critical gelation concentration (0.05 wt%), which can be used for efficient oil-water separation, is reported. The lantern[33 ]arenes self-assemble into hydrogen-bonded organic nanoribbons, which intertwine into entangled fibers to form hydrogel. This hydrogel which exhibits reversible pH-responsiveness characteristics can be coated on stainless-steel mesh by in situ sol-gel transformation. The resultant mesh exhibits excellent oil-water separation efficiency (>99%) and flux (>6 × 104 L m-2 h-1 ). This lantern[33 ]arene-based hydrogel not only sheds additional light on the gelation mechanisms for supramolecular hydrogels, but also extends the application of macrocycle-based hydrogels as functional interfacial materials.

Rigid-Flexible Hybrid Porous Molecular Crystals with Guest-Induced Reversible Crystallinity

A weak CH/O hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) with both rigidity and flexibility that could easily and reversibly switch from a non-crystalline to a crystalline phase was constructed. The specific solvent molecule acts as a "key" to control the crystallinity, while the highly rigid triangle macrocycle as the building block is the "lock". The introduction and removal of the "key" could influence the local flexibility of the whole framework and lead to switchable crystallinity. Furthermore, the obtained HOF exhibits excellent separation efficiency for benzene and cyclohexane (94.4 %).

Woven Polymer Networks: From Crystalline to Elastomeric Materials

Weaving technology has been extensively used for manufacturing macroscopic fabrics and satisfying the artistic demands of humans through the ages. Integrating woven geometries into molecular structures is a persistent pursuit, and yet a significant challenge to chemists, owing to the lack of effective methodologies to guide the regular mutual interlacing of molecular strands. In this Concept article, recent progress and related strategies in constructing woven polymer networks (WPNs) are summarized and discussed. An outlook is then given to highlight the future opportunities and challenges in the development of both molecularly woven structures and molecularly woven functional materials.

Polarity-Evolution Control and Luminescence Regulation in Multiple-Site Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have shown great potential in separation, sensing and host-guest chemistry, however, the pre-design of HOFs remains challenging due to the uncertainty of solvents' participation in framework formation. Herein, the polarity-evolution-controlled framework/luminescence regulation is demonstrated based on multiple-site hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks. Several distinct HOFs were prepared by changing bonding modes of building units via the evolution of electrostatic forces induced by various solvent polarities. High-polar solvents with strong electrostatic attraction to surrounding units showed the tendency to form cage structures, while low-polar solvents with weak electrostatic attraction only occupy hydrogen-bond sites, conducive to the channel formation. Furthermore, the conformation of optical building unit can be adjusted by affecting the solvent polarity, generating different luminescence outputs. These results pave the way for the rational design of ideal HOFs with on-demand framework regulation and luminescence properties.

Multifunctional Porous Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), self-assembled from organic or metalated organic building blocks (also termed as tectons) by hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and other intermolecular interactions, have become an emerging class of multifunctional porous materials. So far, a library of HOFs with high porosity has been synthesized based on versatile tectons and supramolecular synthons. Benefiting from the flexibility and reversibility of H-bonds, HOFs feature high structural flexibility, mild synthetic reaction, excellent solution processability, facile healing, easy regeneration, and good recyclability. However, the flexible and reversible nature of H-bonds makes most HOFs suffer from poor structural designability and low framework stability. In this Outlook, we first describe the development and structural features of HOFs and summarize the design principles of HOFs and strategies to enhance their stability. Second, we highlight the state-of-the-art development of HOFs for diverse applications, including gas storage and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, biological applications, sensing, proton conduction, and other applications. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives are discussed.

A Flexible Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Constructed from a Tetrabenzaldehyde with a Carbazole N-H Binding Site for the Highly Selective Recognition and Separation of Acetone

Rational design of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with multiple functionalities is highly sought after but challenging. Herein, we report a multifunctional HOF (HOF-FJU-2) built from 4,4',4'',4'''-(9H-carbazole-1,3,6,8-tetrayl)tetrabenzaldehyde molecule with tetrabenzaldeyde for their H bonding interactions and carbazole N-H site for its specific recognition of small molecules. The Lewis acid N-H sites allow HOF-FJU-2 facilely separate acetone from its mixture with another solvent like methanol with smaller pK_a value. The donor (D)-π-acceptor (A) aromatic nature of the organic building molecule endows this HOF with solvent dependent luminescent/chromic properties, so the column acetone/methanol separation on HOF-FJU-2 can be readily visualized.

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: Structural Design and Emerging Applications

Constructing well-organized organic frameworks with tailor-made functionalities potentially boost multi-domain applications. Hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) is a category of general and weak intermolecular interactions when compared with covalent bonding or metal-ligand coordination. Porous frameworks mainly assembled by H-bonding (named hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, HOFs) are intrinsically capable of decomposing and regenerating, a distinctive advantage to improve their processability while expanding the applicability. This paper summarizes the basic building concepts of HOFs, including feasible hydrogen bonded motifs, effective molecular structures, and their emerging applications.

Bioinspired Supramolecular Nanotoroids with Aggregation-Induced Emission Characteristics

Supramolecular toroids have attracted continuous attention because of their fascinating topological structure and important role in biological systems. However, it still remains a great challenge to construct supramolecular functional toroids and clarify the formation mechanism. Herein, we develop a strategy to prepare supramolecular helical fluorescent nanotoroids by cooperative self-assembly of an amino acid and a dendritic amphiphile (AIE-den-1) with aggregation-induced emission characteristics. Mechanistic investigation on the basis of fluorescence and circular dichroism analyses suggests that the toroid formation can be driven by the interactions of AIE-den-1 with amino acid and goes through a topological morphology transformation from nanofibers to left-handed nanotoroids by means of a twist-fused-loop process.

Multiple yet switchable hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks with white-light emission

The development of new strategies to construct on-demand porous lattice frameworks from simple motifs is desirable. However, mitigating complexity while combing multiplicity and reversibility in the porous architectures is a challenging task. Herein, based on the synergy of dynamic intermolecular interactions and flexible molecular conformation of a simple cyano-modified tetraphenylethylene tecton, eleven kinetic-stable hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with various shapes and two thermo-stable non-porous structures with rare perpendicular conformation are obtained. Multimode reversible structural transformations along with visible fluorescence output between porous and non-porous or between different porous forms is realized under different external stimuli. Furthermore, the collaborative of flexible framework and soft long-chain guests facilitate the relaxation from intrinsic blue emission to yellow emission in the excited state, which represents a strategy for generating white-light emission. The dynamic intermolecular interactions, facilitated by flexible molecular conformation and soft guests, diversifies the strategies of construction of versatile smart molecular frameworks.

Switchable hydrogen-bonded frameworks have potential applications in the development of smart materials. Herein, the authors report eleven hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks and two non-porous structures that can undergo reversible structural and fluorescence switching; white-light emission is enabled.

Molecular weaving

Historically, the interlacing of strands at the molecular level has mainly been limited to coordination polymers and DNA. Despite being proposed on a number of occasions, the direct, bottom-up assembly of molecular building blocks into woven organic polymers remained an aspirational, but elusive, target for several decades. However, recent successes in two-dimensional and three-dimensional molecular-level weaving now offer new opportunities and research directions at the interface of polymer science and molecular nanotopology. This Perspective provides an overview of the features and potential of the periodic nanoscale weaving of polymer chains, distinguishing it from randomly entangled polymer networks and rigid crystalline frameworks. We review the background and experimental progress so far, and conclude by considering the potential of molecular weaving and outline some of the current and future challenges in this emerging field.

Framework-Shrinkage-Induced Wavelength-Switchable Lasing from a Single Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Microcrystal

Porous organic materials (POMs) have shown great potential for fabricating tunable miniaturized lasers. However, most pure-POM micro/nanolasers are achieved via coordination interactions, during which strong charge exchanges inevitably destroy the intrinsic gain property and even lead to optical quenching, hindering their practical applications. Herein, we reported on an approach to realize hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF)-based in situ wavelength-switchable lasing based on the framework-shrinkage effect. A flexible HOF with reversible framework shrinkage was constructed from gain blocks with multiple rotors. The framework shrinkage of the HOF induced the in situ regulation on the conformation and conjugation degree of gain blocks, leading to distinct energy-level structures with blue/green-color gain emissions. Inspired by this, the in situ wavelength-switchable lasing from HOF microcrystals was achieved through reversibly controlling the framework shrinkage via the absorption/desorption of guests. The results offer useful insight into the use of flexible HOFs for exploiting miniaturized lasers with on-demand nanophotonics performance.

Design strategies for improving the crystallinity of covalent organic frameworks and conjugated polymers: a review

Highly crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs) or conjugated polymers (CPs) are very important and highly desirable because these materials would display better performance in diverse devices and provide more structure-property related information. However, how to achieve highly crystalline or single-crystal COFs and CPs is very challenging. Recently, many research studies have demonstrated the possibility of enhancing the crystallinity of COFs and CPs. Thus, it is timely to offer an overview of the important progress in improving the crystallinity of COFs and CPs from the viewpoint of design strategies. These strategies include polycondensation reaction optimization, improving the planarity, fluorine substitution, side chain engineering, and so on. Furthermore, the challenges and perspectives are also discussed to promote the realization of highly crystalline or single-crystal COFs and CPs.

Quantitative Förster Resonance Energy Transfer: Efficient Light Harvesting for Sequential Photo-Thermo-Electric Conversion

Light is essential to all life on the earth. Thus, highly efficient light-harvesting systems with the sequential energy transfer process are significant for using solar energy in photosynthesis. For developing an efficient light-harvesting system, a liquid aggregation-induced emission (AIE) dye TPE-EA is obtained, as a donor and solvent, which can light up the aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) Nile Red (NiR, acceptor) to construct a quantitative Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) system in NiR⊂TPE-EA. Impressively, this FRET pair shows an impressive photothermal effect, producing a peak temperature of 119 °C while excited by UV light, with 37.8% of conversion efficiency. NiR⊂TPE-EA is quite different from most other photothermal materials, which require excitation with long wavelength light (>520 nm). Therefore, NiR⊂TPE-EA firstly converts the solar into thermal energy and then into electric energy to achieve sequential photo-thermo-electric conversion. Such sequential conversion, suitable for being excited by sunlight, is anticipated to unlock new and smart approaches for capturing solar energy.

A Solid Transformation into Carboxyl Dimers Based on a Robust Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for Propyne/Propylene Separation

Self-assembly of N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine with the help of different solvents provides isostructural hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOF-30). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis reveals HOF-30 possesses 3D ten-fold interpenetrated dia nets connected by two kinds of hydrogen bonds, namely solvent-bridged carboxyl dimers and carboxyl⋅⋅⋅carboxyl dimers. Degassing treatment for HOF-30 yields HOF-30a with 3D ten-fold interpenetrated dia nets but linked with sole carboxyl⋅⋅⋅carboxyl dimers. Reversible hydrogen-bond-to-hydrogen-bond transformation between solvent-bridged carboxyl dimers in HOF-30 and carboxyl⋅⋅⋅carboxyl dimers in HOF-30a has been unveiled by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. In addition, HOF-30a enables the selective adsorption of propyne over propylene according to single-component sorption and breakthrough experiments. The preferred propyne location in HOF has also been identified by SCXRD test.
