Adsorption of textile dye in activated carbons prepared from DVD and CD wastes modified with multi-wall carbon nanotubes: Equilibrium isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamic study

LED-light-driven over ZnO/biochar nanocomposite for activation of peroxymonosulfate to enhanced photocatalytic removal of methyl orange dye in aqueous solutions

ABSTRACTOrganic dyes are stable and persistent toxic compounds in the aquatic environment that are refractory to decompose by removal methods such as physico-chemical, optical and biological. Their presence in the aquatic media threatens human and wildlife. Herein, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) due to good chemical durability, low cost and good photocatalytic performance was anchored on biochar (ZnO@biochar) nanocomposites were synthesized towards activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the photocatalytic removal of methyl orange (MO) dye. Several methods were used to characterization of the nanocomposites including FESEM, XRD, PL, EDS, FT-IR spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption/desorption. The results of the techniques demonstrated that the well-dispersed ZnO NPs were loaded onto the biochar surface. According to the particle size distribution graph, the average particle size of 64 nm was obtained for the ZnO NPs. BET analyzes showed that pore volume, the specific surface area (SSA) and average pore size of the synthesized nanocomposite increased. The survey of effective operational parameters indicated that the highest photocatalytic activity for MO removal was in the pH 3 of solution, 5 ppm initial dye concentration, 30 mg ZnO/biochar nanocomposite, and 20 mg PMS dose under LED-50W lamp irradiation (97.03% in the reaction time of 80 min). During the process, the reduction of the total organic carbon (TOC) contents and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were observed. Moreover, the MO degradation kinetics under optimal operating conditions were determined. It is concluded that the ZnO@biochar nanocomposite/PMS process was an efficient degradation method for the decomposition of the dye pollutant.

Adsorption of ciprofloxacin from aqueous solutions using cellulose-based adsorbents prepared by sol-gel method

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is one of the most widely used antibiotics to treat bacterial infections. Consequently, there is concern that it may contaminate water resources due to its high usage level. It is therefore necessary to monitor, trace, and reduce exposure to these antibiotic residues. In the current study, the extraction of CIP from water was performed using a green adsorbent material based on cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) decorated with mixed metal oxides (MMO). This cellulose/MMO/PVA adsorbent was synthesized using a simple sol-gel method. The prepared adsorbent materials were then characterized using a range of methods, including scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, gas adsorption analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier Transform infrared. The impact of pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, and CIP concentration on ciprofloxacin extraction were examined. The equilibrium and kinetic adsorption data were well described using the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.965). The optimum conditions for CIP adsorption were: pH = 4.5; adsorbent dosage = 0.55 g·L-1; contact time = 83 min; and initial CIP concentration = 2 mg·L-1. The adsorption capacity of the cellulose/MMO/PVA adsorbent for CIP removal was ∼19 mg·g-1 (CIP removal = 86.48 %). This study shows that cellulose/MMO/PVA adsorbents have potential for removing contaminants from aqueous environments.

Alginate@Fe3O4@Bentonite nanocomposite for formaldehyde removal from synthetic and real effluent: optimization by central composite design

In this study, Alginate@ Fe₃O₄/Bentonite nanocomposite was utilized to eliminate formaldehyde from wastewater. Structural features of bentonite, bentonite@Fe₃O₄, and Alginate@Fe₃O₄@Bentonite were determined using FT-IR, PXRD, Mapping, EDX, TEM, SEM, VSM, and BET analyses. The central composite design method was employed to find the optimal conditions for formaldehyde removal using Alg@Fe₃O₄@Bent nanocomposite. The maximum formaldehyde uptake efficiency (94.56%) was obtained at formaldehyde concentration of 10.69 ppm, the nanocomposite dose of 1.28 g/L, and pH of 9.96 after 16.53 min. Also, Alginate@Fe₃O₄@Bentonite composite was used to eliminate formaldehyde from Razi petrochemical wastewater and was able to eliminate 91.24% of formaldehyde, 70% of COD, and 68.9% of BOD₅. The isotherm and kinetic investigations demonstrated that the formaldehyde uptake process by the foresaid adsorbent follows the Langmuir isotherm and quasi-first-order kinetic models, respectively. Also, the maximum uptake capacity was obtained at 50.25 mg/g. Moreover, the formaldehyde uptake process by the aforementioned nanocomposite was exothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the formaldehyde adsorption efficiency decreased slightly after six reuse cycles (less than 10%), indicating that Alginate@Fe₃O₄@Bentonite nanocomposite has remarkable recyclability. Besides, the influence of interfering ions like nitrate, carbonate, chloride, phosphate, and sulfate was studied on the formaldehyde removal efficiency and the results displayed that all ions except nitrate ion have low interaction with formaldehyde (less than 3% reduction in removal efficiency).

Biochar-Mediated Zirconium Ferrite Nanocomposites for Tartrazine Dye Removal from Textile Wastewater

To meet the current challenges concerning the removal of dyes from wastewater, an environmentally friendly and efficient treatment technology is urgently needed. The recalcitrant, noxious, carcinogenic and mutagenic compound dyes are a threat to ecology and its removal from textile wastewater is challenge in the current world. Herein, biochar-mediated zirconium ferrite nanocomposites (BC-ZrFe₂O₅ NCs) were fabricated with wheat straw-derived biochar and applied for the adsorptive elimination of Tartrazine dye from textile wastewater. The optical and structural properties of synthesized BC-ZrFe₂O₅ NCs were characterized via UV/Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform Infra-red (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive R-Ray (EDX) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The batch modes experiments were executed to explore sorption capacity of BC-ZrFe₂O₅ NCs at varying operative conditions, i.e., pH, temperature, contact time, initial dye concentrations and adsorbent dose. BC-ZrFe₂O₅ NCs exhibited the highest sorption efficiency among all adsorbents (wheat straw biomass (WSBM), wheat straw biochar (WSBC) and BC-ZrFe₂O₅ NCs), having an adsorption capacity of (mg g^-1) 53.64 ± 0.23, 79.49 ± 0.21 and 89.22 ± 0.31, respectively, for Tartrazine dye at optimum conditions of environmental variables: pH 2, dose rate 0.05 g, temperature 303 K, time of contact 360 min and concentration 100 mg L^-1. For the optimization of process variables, response surface methodology (RSM) was employed. In order to study the kinetics and the mechanism of the adsorption process, kinetic and equilibrium mathematical models were used, and results revealed 2nd order kinetics and a multilayer chemisorption mechanism due to complexation of hydroxyl, Fe and Zr with dyes functional groups. The nanocomposites were also recovered in five cycles without significant loss (89 to 63%) in adsorption efficacy. This research work provides insight into the fabrication of nanoadsorbents for the efficient adsorption of Tartrazine dye, which can also be employed for practical engineering applications on an industrial scale as efficient and cost effective materials.

Characterization and adsorption of malachite green dye from aqueous solution onto Salix alba L. (Willow tree) leaves powder and its respective biochar

In the present study, the use of low-cost, highly efficient, eco-friendly, and abundantly available (in Kashmir region, J&K India) willow leaves from which adsorbents like willow leaves powder (WLP) and willow leaves biochar (WLB) were prepared, have been found to be efficient for malachite green (MG) dye removal and can be used as an alternative to the current expensive methods of removing the same dye from an aqueous solution. The techniques like Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur (CHNS) analyser were used to characterize the samples without any chemical treatment. SEM of the adsorbents shows the presence of different sized pores, cracks, and crevices. FTIR and CHNS show functional groups and elemental concentration, respectively. The effects of various experimental parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, salt treatment, and pH were investigated and optimal experimental conditions were obtained. It has been found that Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms were useful for describing the equilibrium of adsorption system. The equilibrium adsorption data in this research work was found to follow both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models and maximum monolayer capacity of WLP and WLB were found to be 10.014 and 21.244 mg/g, respectively. The experimental data for both WLP and WLB followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model with R²= 0.999. Intraparticle diffusion model reveals that more than one mechanism influenced the adsorption process. Thermodynamic study concluded that the adsorption is spontaneous for both adsorbents but exothermic for WLP and is endothermic in nature for WLB. Present exploration and comparison with other reported adsorbents concluded that, WLP and WLB may be useful as low-cost attractive option for the removal of MG dye from aqueous solution and therefore, also from wastewater containing MG dye.

Biochar caged zirconium ferrite nanocomposites for the adsorptive removal of Reactive Blue 19 dye in a batch and column reactors and conditions optimizaton

Biochar caged zirconium ferrite (BC-ZrFe2O5) nanocomposites were fabricated and their adsorption capacity for Reactive Blue 19 (RB19) dye was evaluated in a fixed-bed column and batch sorption mode. The adsorption of dye onto BC-ZrFe2O5 NCs followed pseudo-second-order kinetics (R 2 = 0.998) and among isotherms, the experimental data was best fitted to Sips model as compared to Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms models. The influence of flow-rate (3–5 mL min−1), inlet RB19 dye concentration (20–100 mg L−1) and quantity of BC-ZrFe2O5 NCs (0.5–1.5 g) on fixed-bed sorption was elucidated by Box-Behnken experimental design. The saturation times (C t /C o  = 0.95) and breakthrough (C t /C o  = 0.05) were higher at lower flow-rates and higher dose of BC-ZrFe2O5 NCs. The saturation times decreased, but breakthrough was increased with the initial RB19 dye concentration. The treated volume was higher at low sorbent dose and influent concentration. Fractional bed utilization (FBU) increased with RB19 dye concentration and flow rates at low dose of BC-ZrFe2O5 NCs. Yan model was fitted best to breakthrough curves data as compared to Bohart-Adams and Thomas models. Results revealed that BC-ZrFe2O5 nanocomposite has promising adsorption efficiency and could be used for the adsorption of dyes from textile effluents.

Prediction of methyl orange removal by iron decorated activated carbon using an artificial neural network

Date Stones were used as a bio-degradable waste source for preparing iron impregnated activated carbon. The prepared activated carbon-containing oxides of iron were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, and BET. The specific surface area of the iron decorated activated carbon was 738.65 m²/g. The XRD confirmed the presence of magnetite and hematite while the SEM images assured the presence of pores. The prepared activated carbon was used to remove methyl orange from wastewater. Genetic Algorithm was used to develop a model which could predict the removal efficiency of the dye. The ANN model was validated and the effect of different parameters like adsorbent dosage (0.1-1 g/L), initial dye concentration (2-20 mg/L), pH (2-11), time (10-55 min) and temperature (30-75°C) was estimated both experimentally and predicted using the model. The adsorption process follows the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The values of 1/n and K_F obtained from the Freundlich isotherm designate good adsorption capacity. Both experimental and model-predicted data agrees with the kinetic model. The adsorption rate is proportionate to the square of the number of vacant adsorption sites. From the thermodynamic study, the positive worth of ΔH° indicates the energy-absorbing nature of the surface assimilation method and the process is endothermic in nature. The low values of each ΔG° (-200 to 0 kJ/mol) and ΔH° correspond to physical surface assimilation. A positive worth of ΔS° reflects the inflated randomness at the solid-aqueous interface with some structural changes in adsorbate and adsorbent.

Adsorption of Crystal Violet Dye Using Activated Carbon of Lemon Wood and Activated Carbon/Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanocomposite from Aqueous Solutions: A Kinetic, Equilibrium and Thermodynamic Study

Activated carbon prepared from lemon (Citrus limon) wood (ACL) and ACL/Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanocomposite were effectively used to remove the cationic dye of crystal violet (CV) from aqueous solutions. The results showed that Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were successfully placed in the structure of ACL and the produced nanocomposites showed superior magnetic properties. It was found that pH was the most effective parameter in the CV dye adsorption and pH of 9 gave the maximum adsorption efficiency of 93.5% and 98.3% for ACL and ACL/Fe₃O₄, respectively. The Dubinin–Radushkevich (D-R) and Langmuir models were selected to investigate the CV dye adsorption equilibrium behavior for ACL and ACL/Fe₃O₄, respectively. A maximum adsorption capacity of 23.6 and 35.3 mg/g was obtained for ACL and ACL/Fe₃O₄, respectively indicating superior adsorption capacity of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. The kinetic data of the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic model, indicating that chemical mechanisms may have an effect on the CV dye adsorption. The negative values obtained for Gibb’s free energy parameter (−20 < ΔG < 0 kJ/mol) showed that the adsorption process using both types of the adsorbents was physical. Moreover, the CV dye adsorption enthalpy (ΔH) values of −45.4 for ACL and −56.9 kJ/mol for ACL/Fe₃O₄ were obtained indicating that the adsorption process was exothermic. Overall, ACL and ACL/Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanocomposites provide a novel and effective type of adsorbents to remove CV dye from the aqueous solutions.

Fabrication of an electrochemical sensor with Au nanorods-graphene oxide hybrid nanocomposites for in situ measurement of cloxacillin

In recent years, considering the increasing use of antibiotics, and their continued entry into the environment, extensive research has been conducted on the impact of antibiotics on human health, water resources, and the environment. In this study, a suitable method has been proposed for detecting and elimination the trace amounts of the antibiotic cloxacillin in aqueous. For identify trace amounts of cloxacillin in solution, a new electrochemical nanosensor based on a screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with gold nanorods/graphene oxide was proposed. This nanosensor, which was prepared by self-assembling method, was capable of measuring cloxacillin in the 5.0-775.0 nM with a detection limit of 1.6 nM. In order to reduce the amount of antibiotics in the environment, a novel carbon nanocomposite based on sol-gel method was prepared and its application as a high-capacity adsorbent for the removal of cloxacillin was studied. In the antibiotic removal experiments, the effect of pH, contact time, different mass ratios of SWCNT and amount of nanocomposite adsorbent were also optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The prepared nanosensor and synthesized carbon nanocomposites were then characterized by commonly identical techniques involve SEM, EDAX, BET and FT-IR. The presented nanosensor was successfully used for the in situ determination of Clox in adsorptive tests with reliable recovery. As well, the AuNR/GO/SPC electrode presented well stability, repeatability and reproducibility. In addition, good performance and high adsorption capacity make developed adsorbent as a suitable case for the removal of water-soluble pharmaceutical contaminants.

Adsorption Characteristics of Allura Red AC onto Sawdust and Hexadecylpyridinium Bromide-Treated Sawdust in Aqueous Solution

The Allura red AC (ARAC) dye adsorption onto natural sawdust (NSD) and hexadecylpyridinium bromide-treated sawdust (MSD) was investigated in aqueous solution as a function of contact time, solution pH, particle size, adsorbent dosage, dye concentration, temperature, and ionic strength. The adsorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction crystallography. The dye adsorption onto both adsorbents was confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The maximum dye adsorption was found within 120 min at pH 2.0 for NSD and pH 3.0 for MSD, respectively, with a particle size of 0-75 μm and an adsorbent dosage of 0.07 g/50 mL ARAC dye solution (50 μmol/L). The batch adsorption kinetic data were followed by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model rather than the pseudo-first-order and Elovich kinetic models. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms were explained by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum extent of adsorption was found to be 52.14 μmol/g for NSD and 151.88 μmol/g for MSD at 55 °C. The values of activation energy (E _a) and thermodynamic parameters (ΔG ^⧧, ΔH ^⧧, ΔS ^⧧, ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS°) proved that the ARAC dye adsorption onto both adsorbents NSD and MSD is a spontaneous-endothermic physisorption process. ARAC (98-99%) was released from dye-loaded adsorbents in aqueous solution (pH ≥ 12) within 120 min. The adsorbents NSD and MSD were reused for a second time without significant loss of their adsorption efficiency.

Ultrasound-assisted sorption of Pb(ii) on multi-walled carbon nanotube in presence of natural organic matter: an insight into main and interaction effects using modelling approaches of RSM and BRT

In real-scale applications, where NPs are injected into the aqueous environment for remediation, they may interact with natural organic matter (NOM). This interaction can alter nanoparticles' (NPs) physicochemical properties, sorption behavior, and even ecological effects. This study aimed to investigate sorption of Pb(ii) onto multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) in presence of NOM. The predominant behavior of the process was examined comparatively using response surface methodology (RSM) and boosted regression tree (BRT)-based models. The influence of four main effective parameters, namely Pb(ii) and humic acid (HA) concentrations (mg L⁻¹), pH, and time (min) on Pb removal (%) was evaluated by contributing factor importance rankings (BRT) and analysis of variance (RSM). The applicability of the BRT and RSM models for description of the predominant behavior in the design space was checked and compared using statistics of absolute average deviation (AAD), mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and multiple correlation coefficient (R²). The results showed that although both approaches exhibited good performance, the BRT model was more precise, indicating that it could be a powerful method for the modeling of NOM-presence studies. Importance rankings of BRT displayed that the effectiveness order of the studied parameters is pH > time > Pb(ii) concentration > HA concentration. Although HA concentration showed the least effect in comparison with three other studied parameters theoretically, the experimental results revealed that Pb(ii) removal is enhanced in presence of HA (73% vs. 81.77%), which was confirmed by SEM/EDX analyses. Hence, maximum removal (R% = 81.77) was attained at an initial Pb(ii) concentration of 9.91 mg L⁻¹, HA concentration of 0.3 mg L⁻¹, pH of 4.9, and time of 55.2 min.
