Complexes of surfactants with oppositely charged polymers at surfaces and in bulk

Boundary Lubrication Performance of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complexes on Biomimetic Surfaces

Aqueous mixtures of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and surfactants are useful in many industrial applications, such as shampoos and hair conditioners. In this work, we investigate the friction between biomimetic hair surfaces in the presence of adsorbed complexes formed from cationic polyelectrolytes and anionic surfactants in an aqueous solution. We apply nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations using the coarse-grained MARTINI model. We first developed new MARTINI parameters for cationic guar gum (CGG), a functionalized, plant-derived polysaccharide. The complexation of CGG and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on virgin and chemically damaged biomimetic hair surfaces was studied using a sequential adsorption approach. We then carried out squeeze-out and sliding NEMD simulations to assess the boundary lubrication performance of the CGG-SDS complex compressed between two hair surfaces. At low pressure, we observe a synergistic friction behavior for the CGG-SDS complex, which gives lower shear stress than either pure CGG or SDS. Here, friction is dominated by viscous dissipation in an interfacial layer comprising SDS and water. At higher pressures, which are probably beyond those usually experienced during hair manipulation, SDS and water are squeezed out, and friction increases due to interdigitation. The outcomes of this work are expected to be beneficial to fine-tune and screen sustainable hair care formulations to provide low friction and therefore a smooth feel and reduced entanglement.

Insights into the Characterization of the Self-Assembly of Different Types of Amphiphilic Molecules Using Dynamic Light Scattering

The self-assembly of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, sodium dodecylsulfate, Triton X-100, and sulfobetaine surfactants in aqueous solutions was examined by dynamic light scattering, both in the presence and absence of 0.1 M NaCl salt, across various temperatures. For each surfactant, critical parameters, such as concentration and phase transition temperatures, of micelles were determined by monitoring changes in the hydrodynamic diameter with concentration and temperature. Additionally, we explored the self-assembly behavior of these surfactants when they are introduced alongside polystyrene nanoparticles. Our findings enabled the elucidation of surfactant molecule adsorption mechanisms onto polystyrene nanoparticle surfaces. Furthermore, by analyzing variations in the z-average diameter and zeta potential, we were able to establish the Krafft point, a parameter that remains imperceptible when polystyrene nanoparticles are absent from the solution.

The evolution of equilibrium poly(styrene sulfonate) and dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide supramolecular structure in dilute aqueous solution with increasing surfactant binding

HYPOTHESIS

In the last 20 years, it has been demonstrated that oppositely charged polyelectrolyte-surfactant (PE-S) mixtures are prone to forming kinetically arrested non-equilibrium aggregates, which are present in the prepared mixtures from rather low surfactant-to-polymer-repeat-unit ratios. Practically, this means that the PE-S mixtures used for the structural investigations of the formed PE-S complexes are typically a mixture of the primary PE-S complexes and large non-equilibrium aggregates of close to charge-neutral complexes.

EXPERIMENTS

In this work, we present a unique approach that allows the preparation of PE-S mixtures in the equilibrium one-phase region (surfactant binding β, is typically below 80%) without forming non-equilibrium aggregates. We used this method to prepare equilibrium, non-aggregated complexes of sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (NaPSS, Mw = 17 kDa) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) (β = 10 - 70%) both in water and in an inert electrolyte (100 mM NaCl). The evolution of the complex structure was monitored by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as a function of increasing surfactant binding (β), and the measured scattering data were fitted by suitable structural models on an absolute scale where concentrations, compositions, and scattering contrasts calculated from molecular properties are used as restraints.

FINDINGS

We could show that at low binding (β < 30%), the system is a mixture of bare polyelectrolyte coils and NaPSS-DTAB complexes containing a closed surfactant associates of low aggregation number wrapped by the polyelectrolyte chain. Once all polymer chains are occupied by a micelle-like surfactant aggregate, the aggregation number increases linearly with increasing surfactant chemical potential. Using the structural insight provided by the SAXS measurements, we could fit the experimental binding isotherm data with a physically coherent, simple thermodynamic model. Finally, we also compared the stoichiometric NaPSS-DTAB precipitate's structure with the equilibrium complexes' structure.

Effects of Charge Density on Spread Hyperbranched Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Films at the Air/Water Interface

The interfacial structure and morphology of films spread from hyperbranched polyethylene imine/sodium dodecyl sulfate (PEI/SDS) aggregates at the air/water interface have been resolved for the first time with respect to polyelectrolyte charged density. A recently developed method to form efficient films from the dissociation of aggregates using a minimal quantity of materials is exploited as a step forward in enhancing understanding of the film properties with a view to their future use in technological applications. Interfacial techniques that resolve different time and length scales, namely, ellipsometry, Brewster angle microscopy, and neutron reflectometry, are used. Extended structures of both components are formed under a monolayer of the surfactant with bound polyelectrolytes upon film compression on subphases adjusted to pH 4 or 10, corresponding to high and low charge density of the polyelectrolyte, respectively. A rigid film is related to compact conformation of the PEI in the interfacial structure at pH 4, while it is observed that aggregates remain embedded in mobile films at pH 10. The ability to compact surfactants in the monolayer to the same extent as its maximum coverage in the absence of polyelectrolyte is distinct from the behavior observed for spread films involving linear polyelectrolytes, and intriguingly evidence points to the formation of extended structures over the full range of surface pressures. We conclude that the molecular architecture and charge density can be important parameters in controlling the structures and properties of spread polyelectrolyte/surfactant films, which holds relevance to a range of applications, such as those where PEI is used, including CO2 capture, electronic devices, and gene transfection.

Interactions between Ionic Cellulose Derivatives Recycled from Textile Wastes and Surfactants: Interfacial, Aggregation and Wettability Studies

Interactions between polymers (P) and surfactants (S) in aqueous solution lead to interfacial and aggregation phenomena that are not only of great interest in physical chemistry but also important for many industrial applications, such as the development of detergents and fabric softeners. Here, we synthesized two ionic derivatives-sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) and quaternized cellulose (QC)-from cellulose recycled from textile wastes and then explored the interactions of these polymers with assorted surfactants-cationic (CTAB, gemini), anionic (SDS, SDBS) and nonionic (TX-100)-commonly used in the textile industry. We obtained surface tension curves of the P/S mixtures by fixing the polymer concentration and then increasing the surfactant concentration. In mixtures where polymer and surfactant are oppositely charged (P^-/S⁺ and P⁺/S^-), a strong association is observed, and from the surface tension curves, we determined the critical aggregation concentration (cac) and critical micelle concentration in the presence of polymer (cmc^p). For mixtures of similar charge (P⁺/S⁺ and P^-/S^-), virtually no interactions are observed, with the notable exception of the QC/CTAB system, which is much more surface active than the neat CTAB. We further investigated the effect of oppositely charged P/S mixtures on hydrophilicity by measuring the contact angles of aqueous droplets on a hydrophobic textile substrate. Significantly, both P^-/S⁺ and P⁺/S^- systems greatly enhance the hydrophilicity of the substrate at much lower surfactant concentrations than the surfactant alone (in particular in the QC/SDBS and QC/SDS systems).

Stain removal performance of moisture-wicking fabric during home laundry

Moisture-wicking clothes are widely used in various sports or athletic activities due to their function of moisture absorption and perspiration. In this study, the washing and decontamination of moisture-wicking fabrics, especially the performance and decontamination effect of moisture-wicking fabrics after washing were investigated. The results showed that the physical morphology of moisture-wicking fabric is very different from that of an ordinary polyester fabric. The cross-section of the moisture-wicking fabric is hexagonal, and this fabric has good hydrophilicity. After the degreasing & thermosetting process, the air permeability of the moisture-wicking fabric is increased from 1013 mm/s to 2911 mm/s. However, the air permeability is decreased after one washing, but it has little effect during the subsequent washing cycles. Moreover, the degreasing & thermosetting process also improve the stains removal index. If the moisture-wicking fabric was washed before the preparation of stained fabric, the stain removal index of carbon black soil and sebum stains is increased. Although most of the aggregated particles on the surface of the fibers are removed after washing, a small amount of sebum still remains in the spaces between the fibers. These results indicate that most of the carbon black in the stained area is removed after washing, while oil components are hardly removed from the moisture-wicking fabric during home laundry. Compared to other surfactants, C18 fatty acid methyl ester ethoxylates and nonionic surfactants with long carbon chains can effectively reduce the surface tension of water and improve the wettability of water-wicking fabric, so that water molecules can diffuse well between fibers and stains, the binding force between stains and fabric is weakened, and the decontamination of the fabric is improved.

When Bulk Matters: Disentanglement of the Role of Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Complexes at Surfaces and in the Bulk of Foam Films

Foam films display exciting systems as on one hand they dictate the performance of macroscopic foams and on the other hand they allow studies of surface forces. With regard to surface forces, we attempt to disentangle the effect of the foam film surfaces and the foam film bulk. For that, we study the influence of salt (LiBr) on foam films formed by mixtures of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte and surfactant: anionic monosulfonated polyphenylene sulfone (sPSO₂-220) and cationic tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C₁₄TAB). Adding a small amount of salt (≤10^-3 M) decreases the foam film stability due to a weakened electrostatic net repulsion. In contrast, a large amount of salt (10^-2 M) unexpectedly increases the foam film stability. Disjoining pressure isotherms reveal that the increased stability is due to an additional steric stabilization, which is attributed to sPSO₂-220/C₁₄TAB complexes in the film bulk. These bulk complexes also contribute to the measured apparent surface potential between the two air/water interfaces. We find, for the first time, the formation of Newton black films for mixtures of anionic polyelectrolytes and cationic surfactants.

Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complexes As a Formulation Tool for Drug Delivery

Aqueous polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes (PESCs) are very rich with respect to their properties and the structures formed by them. By design they normally contain hydrophobic micellar surfactant aggregates complexed by long polyelectrolyte chains, thereby combining the formation of small hydrophobic domains given by the surfactant with large-scale structuring due to the presence of the polyelectrolyte chain. In addition, they contain highly polar regions of surfactant head groups in contact with polyelectrolyte, forming a shell around the micellar aggregates, which often also possesses a certain hydrophobic character. Accordingly, the ability for solubilization of water-insoluble compounds of different sorts is particularly versatile in PESCs. Their solubilization sites with very different polarities and hydrophobic characters make them very flexible in adapting to the requirements of a given drug molecule. This renders them attractive for potential applications in drug delivery. In addition, modification of the rheological properties via self-assembly and network formation can be very important in PESC applications. In the following, we discuss the structures of PESCs and their properties, with a focus on the solubilization properties. Subsequently, examples are described where PESCs have been employed in the context of drug solubilization and delivery. These comprise examples with individual aggregates, cross-linked hydrogels, and ones taking advantage of the high solubilization capacity of microemulsions.

Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures: A Pathway to Smart Foams

This review deals with liquid foams stabilized by polyelectrolyte/surfactant (PS) complexes in aqueous solution. It briefly reviews all the important aspects of foam physics at several scales, from interfaces to macroscopic foams, needed to understand the basics of these complex systems, focusing on those particular aspects of foams stabilized by PS mixtures. The final section includes a few examples of smart foams based on PS complexes that have been reported recently in the literature. These PS complexes open an opportunity to develop new intelligent dispersed materials with potential in many fields, such as oil industry, environmental remediation, and pharmaceutical industry, among others. However, there is much work to be done to understand the mechanism involved in the stabilization of foams with PS complexes. Understanding those underlying mechanisms is vital to successfully formulate smart systems. This review is written in the hope of stimulating further work in the physics of PS foams and, particularly, in the search for responsive foams based on polymer-surfactant mixtures.

Surface Activity of Surfactant–Polyelectrolyte Mixtures through Nanoplasmonic Sensing Technology

Deposition plays an important role in the active delivery and efficiency of hair and skin formulations since it allows active compounds to interact with surfaces in order to achieve the product’s desired performance characteristics. Therefore, it is essential to study the surface activity and behavior of certain compounds that are frequently used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations in order to understand how they interact with relevant biological surfaces, such as hair and skin. We chose to study the surfactants and conditioning agents utilized in the formulation of conditioning shampoos, which are usually designed to be able to achieve the deposition of these substances on the hair and scalp to provide lubrication and better conditioning for hair fibers, facilitating detangling and providing a better feel. In this study, cationic polymer and salt fractions were varied to obtain eighteen different conditioning shampoo formulations in which the deposition was measured by utilizing a nanoplasmonic sensing technology instrument. Moreover, a wet combing test was performed for each of the formulations to investigate if there was any correlation between the combing force and the surface deposition. The complete study was performed using a sustainable anionic surfactant in order to compare the results with those obtained from the traditional formulations.

Insights into Extended Structures and Their Driving Force: Influence of Salt on Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures at the Air/Water Interface

This paper addresses the effect of polyelectrolyte stiffness on the surface structure of polyelectrolyte (P)/surfactant (S) mixtures. Therefore, two different anionic Ps with different intrinsic persistence length lP are studied while varying the salt concentration (0-10-2 M). Either monosulfonated polyphenylene sulfone (sPSO2-220, lP ∼20 nm) or sodium poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS, lP ∼1 nm) is mixed with the cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C14TAB) well below its critical micelle concentration and studied with tensiometry and neutron reflectivity experiments. We kept the S concentration (10-4 M) constant, while we varied the P concentration (10-5-10-3 M of the monomer, denoted as monoM). P and S adsorb at the air/water interface for all studied mixtures. Around the bulk stoichiometric mixing point (BSMP), PSS/C14TAB mixtures lose their surface activity, whereas sPSO2-220/C14TAB mixtures form extended structures perpendicular to the surface (meaning a layer of S with attached P and additional layers of P and S underneath instead of only a monolayer of S with P). Considering the different P monomer structures as well as the impact of salt, we identified the driving force for the formation of these extended structures: compensation of all interfacial charges (P/S ratio ∼1) to maximize the gain of entropy. By increasing the flexibility of P, we can tune the interfacial structures from extended structures to monolayers. These findings may help improve applications based on the adsorption of P/S mixtures in the fields of cosmetic or oil recovery.

Study of the Dilution-Induced Deposition of Concentrated Mixtures of Polyelectrolytes and Surfactants

Mixtures of polyelectrolytes and surfactants are commonly used in many technological applications where the challenge is to provide well-defined modifications of the surface properties, as is the case of washing formulations in cosmetics. However, if contemporary experimental and theoretical methods can provide insights on their behavior in concentrated formulations, less is known on their behavior under practical use conditions, e.g., under dilution and vectorization of deposits. This makes it difficult to make predictions for specific performance, as, for example, good hair manageability after a shampoo or a comfortable sensorial appreciation after a skin cleanser. This is especially important when considering the formulation of new, more eco-friendly formulations. In this work, a detailed study of the phase separation process induced by dilution is described, as well as the impact on the deposition of conditioning material on negatively charged surfaces. In order to gain a more detailed physical insight, several polyelectrolyte–surfactant pairs, formed by two different polymers and five surfactants that, although non-natural or eco-friendly, can be considered as models of classical formulations, have been studied. The results evidenced that upon dilution the behavior, and hence its deposition onto the surface, cannot be predicted in terms of the behavior of simpler pseudo-binary (mixtures of a polymer and a surfactant) or pseudo-ternary mixtures (two polymers and a surfactant). In many cases, phase separation was observed for concentrations similar to those corresponding to the components in some technological formulations, whereas the latter appeared as monophasic systems. Therefore, it may be assumed that the behavior in multicomponent formulations is the result of a complex interplay of synergistic interactions between the different components that will require revisiting when new, more eco-sustainable ingredients are considered.

Responsive Material and Interfacial Properties through Remote Control of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Mixtures

Polyelectrolyte/surfactant (P/S) mixtures find many applications but are static in nature and cannot be reversibly reconfigured through the application of external stimuli. Using a new type of photoswitchable surfactants, we use light to trigger property changes in mixtures of an anionic polyelectrolyte with a cationic photoswitch such as electrophoretic mobilities, particle size, as well as their interfacial structure and their ability to stabilize aqueous foam. For that, we show that prevailing hydrophobic intermolecular interactions can be remotely controlled between poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and arylazopyrazole tetraethylammonium bromide (AAP-TB). Shifting the chemical potential for P/S binding with E/Z photoisomerization of the surfactants can reversibly disintegrate even large aggregates (>4 μm) and is accompanied by a substantial change in the net charging state of PSS/AAP-TB complexes, e.g., from negative to positive excess charges upon light irradiation. In addition to the drastic changes in the bulk solution, also at air-water interfaces, the interfacial stoichiometry and structure change drastically on the molecular level with E/Z photoisomerization, which can also drive the stability of aqueous foam on a macroscopic level.

Structure and composition of mixed micelles formed by nonionic block copolymers and ionic surfactants in water determined by small-angle neutron scattering with contrast variation

HYPOTHESIS

Complex fluids comprising polymers and surfactants exhibit interesting properties which depend on the overall composition and solvent quality. The ultimate determinants of the macroscopic properties are the nano-scale association domains. Hence it is important to ascertain the structure and composition of the domains, and how they respond to the overall composition.

EXPERIMENTS

The structure and composition of mixed micelles formed in aqueous solution between poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) block copolymers (Pluronics or Poloxamers) and the ionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) are determined from an analysis of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) intensity data obtained at different contrasts. Different polymers and concentrations have been probed.

FINDINGS

The SDS + Pluronic mixed micelles include polymer and some water in the micelle core that is formed primarily by alkyl chains. This is different than what was previously reported, but is consistent with a variety of experimental observations. This is the first report on the structure of SDS + Pluronic P123 (EO₁₉PO₆₉EO₁₉) assemblies. The effects on the mixed micelle structure and composition of the surfactant concentration and the polymer hydrophobicity are discussed here in the context of interactions between the different components.

A pH-Responsive Foam Formulated with PAA/Gemini 12-2-12 Complexes

In the search for responsive complexes with potential applications in the formulation of smart dispersed systems such as foams, we hypothesized that a pH-responsive system could be formulated with polyacrylic acid (PAA) mixed with a cationic surfactant, Gemini 12-2-12 (G12). We studied PAA-G12 complexes at liquid–air interfaces by equilibrium and dynamic surface tension, surface rheology, and X-ray reflectometry (XRR). We found that complexes adsorb at the interfaces synergistically, lowering the equilibrium surface tension at surfactant concentrations well below the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the surfactant. We studied the stability of foams formulated with the complexes as a function of pH. The foams respond reversibly to pH changes: at pH 3.5, they are very stable; at pH > 6, the complexes do not form foams at all. The data presented here demonstrate that foam formation and its pH responsiveness are due to interfacial dynamics.

Particle-laden fluid/fluid interfaces: physico-chemical foundations

Particle-laden fluid/fluid interfaces are ubiquitous in academia and industry, which has fostered extensive research efforts trying to disentangle the physico-chemical bases underlying the trapping of particles to fluid/fluid interfaces as well as the properties of the obtained layers. The understanding of such aspects is essential for exploiting the ability of particles on the stabilization of fluid/fluid interface for the fabrication of novel interface-dominated devices, ranging from traditional Pickering emulsions to more advanced reconfigurable devices. This review tries to provide a general perspective of the physico-chemical aspects associated with the stabilization of interfaces by colloidal particles, mainly chemical isotropic spherical colloids. Furthermore, some aspects related to the exploitation of particle-laden fluid/fluid interfaces on the stabilization of emulsions and foams will be also highlighted. It is expected that this review can be used for researchers and technologist as an initial approach to the study of particle-laden fluid layers.

Aggregation behavior and thermodynamic properties of the mixture of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide in numerous temperatures and mixed solvents

Interaction of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB; cationic in nature) in H2O and additives (alcohols and diols) media has been investigated using conductivity technique. The micellar parameters such as critical micelle concentration (cmc), fraction of counter ion binding (β), thermodynamic parameters, transfer properties, and enthalpy-entropy compensation parameters of CTAB + SCMC mixture have been assessed in water and aq. alcohols/diols media. One cmc value was achieved for CTAB + SCMC mixtures in the entire circumstances and the attendance of SCMC disfavors the CTAB micellization. The cmc values were obtained to be greater in alcohols and diols media compared to H2O medium. The cmc values also exhibit a dependency on the solvent composition and temperature variation. In all the cases, the ΔG 0 m values were achieved to be negative which signifying the spontaneous formation of micelles while the extent of spontaneity is decreased in alcohols and diols media. Both the ΔH 0 m and ΔS 0 m reveal that hydrophobic, ion-dipole as well as electrostatic interactions are the proposed binding forces between CTAB and SCMC. The compensation parameters (ΔH 0* m and T c ) are in decent agreement with the biological fluid.

Dye-Loaded Nanoemulsions: Biomimetic Fluorescent Nanocarriers for Bioimaging and Nanomedicine

Lipid nanoemulsions (NEs), owing to their controllable size (20 to 500 nm), stability and biocompatibility, are now frequently used in various fields, such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, drug delivery, and even as nanoreactors for chemical synthesis. Moreover, being composed of components generally recognized as safe (GRAS), they can be considered as "green" nanoparticles that mimic closely lipoproteins and intracellular lipid droplets. Therefore, they attracted attention as carriers of drugs and fluorescent dyes for both bioimaging and studying the fate of nanoemulsions in cells and small animals. In this review, the composition of dye-loaded NEs, methods for their preparation, and emerging biological applications are described. The design of bright fluorescent NEs with high dye loading and minimal aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) is focused on. Common issues including dye leakage and NEs stability are discussed, highlighting advanced techniques for their characterization, such as Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Attempts to functionalize NEs surface are also discussed. Thereafter, biological applications for bioimaging and single-particle tracking in cells and small animals as well as biomedical applications for photodynamic therapy are described. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of fluorescent NEs are discussed.

Coacervation in Cationic Polyelectrolyte Solutions with Anionic Amino Acid Surfactants

Coacervates formed by cationic polyelectrolytes and anionic surfactants are utilized to improve the user's tactile perception of shampooing hair during washing and after drying. In this study, we investigated the formation and structure of coacervates in aqueous systems containing anionic amino acid surfactants. The phase behaviors at constant temperature were investigated in aqueous systems combining cationic polyelectrolyte JR-400 with potassium cocoyl glutamate (CoGluK) or potassium cocoyl glycinate (CoGlyK) for a qualitative depiction of coacervate formation. The composition range of coacervate formation varied with the hydrophilic group of the surfactant. The surface tension was measured at different surfactant concentrations and constant polyelectrolyte concentration. The surface tension behavior revealed the critical association concentrations and critical micelle concentrations, indicating that coacervate was produced via complex formation through electrostatic interaction between opposite charges. Optical microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering measurements revealed that the coacervates were composed of fibrous aggregates, a few microns thick, and those formed in the CoGlyK system had thicker fibers.

Behavior of the water/vapor interface of chitosan solutions with an anionic surfactant: effect of polymer-surfactant interactions

The adsorption of mixtures formed by chitosan and sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) at the water/vapor interface has been studied on the basis of their impact on the equilibrium surface tension of the interface, and the response of such an interface to mechanical deformations. The analysis of the surfactant binding to the chitosan chains evidenced that the chitosan-SLES solutions were mixtures of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes and a non-negligible amount of free surfactant molecules. The interfacial properties showed two well-differentiated regions for interfacial adsorption as a function of the SLES concentration: (i) at a low surfactant concentration, co-adsorption of chitosan and SLES occurs, and (ii) at high concentrations, the surface is mostly occupied by SLES molecules. This behavior may be interpreted in terms of a complex equilibration mechanism of the interfacial layers, where different coupled dynamic processes may be involved. Furthermore, the use of the time-concentration superposition principle has confirmed the different dynamic behaviors of the chitosan-SLES adsorption as a function of the SLES concentration. This work sheds light on some of the most fundamental bases governing the physico-chemical behavior of mixtures formed by a biopolymer and a surfactant, where their complex behavior is governed by an intricate balance of bulk and interfacial interactions.

Polymer Capsules with Hydrophobic Liquid Cores as Functional Nanocarriers

Recent developments in the fabrication of core-shell polymer nanocapsules, as well as their current and future applications, are reported here. Special attention is paid to the newly introduced surfactant-free fabrication method of aqueous dispersions of nanocapsules with hydrophobic liquid cores stabilized by amphiphilic copolymers. Various approaches to the efficient stabilization of such vehicles, tailoring their cores and shells for the fabrication of multifunctional, navigable nanocarriers and/or nanoreactors useful in various fields, are discussed. The emphasis is placed on biomedical applications of polymer nanocapsules, including the delivery of poorly soluble active compounds and contrast agents, as well as their use as theranostic platforms. Other methods of fabrication of polymer-based nanocapsules are briefly presented and compared in the context of their biomedical applications.

Effects of Polypropylene Glycol at Very Low Concentrations on Rheological Properties at the Air-Water Interface and Foam Stability of Sodium Bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate Aqueous Solutions

The present study investigates the effects of very low concentrations of polypropylene glycol (PPG) on the rheological properties of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) aqueous solutions at the surface for the precise control of foam properties. Langmuir trough experiments and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) of the AOT monolayer on the surfaces of PPG aqueous solutions indicated that a very low concentration of PPG increased the number of AOT molecules at the surface. Viscoelastic behaviors at the surface and surface tension isotherms in mixed aqueous solutions of AOT and PPG revealed that AOT interacted with PPG in the surface and bulk phase. A modified Ross-Miles method was performed to assess the foam stabilities of AOT aqueous solutions with and without PPG. The stabilization of foam by PPG was attributed to the rheological properties of AOT aqueous solutions at the surface.

Association between Nonionic Amphiphilic Polymer and Ionic Surfactant in Aqueous Solutions: Effect of Polymer Hydrophobicity and Micellization

The interaction in aqueous solutions of surfactants with amphiphilic polymers can be more complex than the surfactant interactions with homopolymers. Interactions between the common ionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonionic amphiphilic polymers of the poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) type have been probed utilizing a variety of experimental techniques. The polymer amphiphiles studied here are Pluronic F127 (EO₁₀₀PO₆₅EO₁₀₀) and Pluronic P123 (EO₁₉PO₆₉EO₁₉), having the same length PPO block but different length PEO blocks and, accordingly, very different critical micellization concentrations (CMC). With increasing surfactant concentration in aqueous solutions of fixed polymer content, SDS interacts with unassociated PEO-PPO-PEO molecules to first form SDS-rich SDS/Pluronic assemblies and then free SDS micelles. SDS interacts with micellized PEO-PPO-PEO to form Pluronic-rich SDS/Pluronic assemblies, which upon further increase in surfactant concentration, break down and transition into SDS-rich SDS/Pluronic assemblies, followed by free SDS micelle formation. The SDS-rich SDS/Pluronic assemblies exhibit polyelectrolyte characteristics. The interactions and mode of association between nonionic macromolecular amphiphiles and short-chain ionic amphiphiles are affected by the polymer hydrophobicity and its concentration in the aqueous solution. For example, SDS binds to Pluronic F127 micelles at much lower concentrations (~0.01 mM) when compared to Pluronic P123 micelles (~1 mM). The critical association concentration (CAC) values of SDS in aqueous PEO-PPO-PEO solutions are much lower than CAC in aqueous PEO homopolymer solutions.

Impact of the bulk aggregation on the adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures onto solid surfaces

The understanding of the deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes-surfactant mixtures onto solid surfaces presents a high interest in current days due to the recognized impact of the obtained layers on different industrial sectors and the performance of several consumer products (e.g. formulations of shampoos and hair conditioners). This results from the broad range of structures and properties that can present the mixed layers, which in most of the cases mirror the association process occurring between the polyelectrolyte chains and the oppositely charged surfactants in the bulk. Therefore, the understanding of the adsorption processes and characteristics of the adsorbed layers can be only attained from a careful examination of the self-assembly processes occurring in the solution. This review aims to contribute to the understanding of the interaction of polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures with solid surfaces, which is probably one of the most underexplored aspects of these type of systems. For this purpose, a comprehensive discussion on the correlations between the aggregates formed in the solutions and the deposition of the obtained complexes upon such association onto solid surfaces will be presented. This makes it necessary to take a closer look to the most important forces driving such processes.

Counterion Condensation, the Gibbs Equation, and Surfactant Binding: An Integrated Description of the Behavior of Polyelectrolytes and Their Mixtures with Surfactants at the Air-Water Interface

By applying the Gibbs equation to the bulk binding isotherms and surface composition of the air-water (A-W) interface in polyelectrolyte-surfactant (PE-S) systems, we show that their surface behavior can be explained semiquantitatively in terms of four concentration regions, which we label as A, B, C, and D. In the lowest-concentration range A, there are no bound PE-S complexes in the bulk but there may be adsorption of PE-S complexes at the surface. When significant adsorption occurs in this region, the surface tension (ST) drops with increasing concentration like a simple surfactant solution. Region B extends from the onset of bulk PE-S binding to the end of cooperative binding, in which the slow variation of surfactant activity with cooperative binding means that the ST changes relatively little, although adsorption may be significant. This leads to an approximate plateau, which may be at high or low ST. Region C starts where the binding in the bulk complex loses its cooperativity leading to a rapid change of surfactant activity with the total concentration. This, combined with significant adsorption, often leads to a sharp drop in ST. Region D is where precipitation and redissolution of the bulk PE-S complex occur. ST peaks may arise in region D because of loss of the solution complex that matches the value of the preferred surface stoichiometry, which seems to have a well-defined value for each system. The analysis is applied to the experimental systems, sodium polystyrene sulfonate-alkyltrimethylammonium bromides and poly(diallyldimethyl chloride)-sodium alkyl sulfates, with and without the added electrolyte, and includes data from bulk binding isotherms, phase diagrams, aggregation behavior, and direct measurements of the surface excess and stoichiometry of the surface. The successful fits of the Gibbs equation to the data confirm that the surfaces in these systems are largely equilibrated.

Physicochemical Aspects of the Performance of Hair-Conditioning Formulations

Most of the currently used products for repairing and conditioning hair rely on the deposition of complex formulations, based on mixtures involving macromolecules and surfactants, onto the surface of hair fibers. This leads to the partial covering of the damaged areas appearing in the outermost region of capillary fibers, which enables the decrease of the friction between fibers, improving their manageability and hydration. The optimization of shampoo and conditioner formulations necessitates a careful examination of the different physicochemical parameters related to the conditioning mechanism, e.g., the thickness of the deposits, its water content, topography or frictional properties. This review discusses different physicochemical aspects which impact the understanding of the most fundamental bases of the conditioning process.

Synergistic Polymer-Surfactant-Complex Mediated Colloidal Interactions and Deposition

Total internal reflection microscopy (TIRM) is used to directly, sensitively, and simultaneously measure colloidal interactions, dynamics, and deposition for a broad range of polymer-surfactant compositions. A deposition state diagram containing comprehensive information about particle interactions, trajectories, and deposition behavior is obtained for polymer-surfactant compositions covering four decades in both polymer and surfactant concentrations. Bulk polymer-surfactant phase behavior and surface properties are characterized to provide additional information to interpret mechanisms. Materials investigated include cationic acrylamide-acrylamidopropyltrimonium copolymer (AAC), sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) surfactant, silica colloids, and glass microscope slides. Measured colloid-substrate interaction potentials and deposition behavior show nonmonotonic trends vs polymer-surfactant composition and appear to be synergistic in the sense that they are not easily explained as the superposition of single-component-mediated interactions. Broad findings show that at some compositions polymer-surfactant complexes mediate bridging and depletion attractions that promote colloidal deposition, whereas other compositions produce electrosteric repulsion that deters colloidal deposition. These findings illustrate mechanisms underlying colloid-surface interactions in polymer-surfactant mixtures, which are important to controlling selective colloidal deposition in multicomponent formulation applications.

Luengo G, Rubio AM, Rey A, Léonforte F. Self-Consistent Mean Field Calculations of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Mixtures in Solution and upon Adsorption onto Negatively Charged Surfaces

Self-Consistent Mean-Field Calculations (SCF) have provided a semi-quantitative description of the physico-chemical behavior of six different polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures. The SCF calculations performed showed that both the formation of polymer-surfactant in bulk and the adsorption of the formed complexes onto negatively-charged surfaces are strongly affected by the specific nature of the considered systems, with the polymer-surfactant interactions playing a central role in the self-assembly of the complexes that, in turn, affects their adsorption onto interfaces and surfaces. This work evidences that SCF calculations are a valuable tool for deepening on the understanding of the complex physico-chemical behavior of polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures. However, it is worth noting that the framework obtained on the basis of an SCF approach considered an equilibrium situation which may, in some cases, be far from the real situation appearing in polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems.

Contrast variation of micelles composed of Ca2+ and block copolymers of two negatively charged polyelectrolytes

Block copolymers were prepared with two anionic polyelectrolyte blocks: sodium polyacrylate (PA) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS), in order to investigate their phase behavior in aqueous solution in the presence of Ca2+ cations. Depending on the concentration of polymer and Ca2+ and on the ratio of the block lengths in the copolymer, spherical micelles were observed. Micelle formation arises from the specific interaction of Ca2+ with the PA block only. An extensive small-angle scattering study was performed in order to unravel the structure and dimensions of the block copolymer micelles. Deuteration of the PA block enabled us to perform contrast variation experiments using small-angle neutron scattering at variable ratios of light and heavy water which were combined with information from small-angle X-ray scattering and dynamic light scattering.

Helping Strands: Polyelectrolyte Assists in Surfactant Assembly below Critical Micelle Concentration

Strongly adsorbing polymer/surfactant (P/S) combinations have been proposed for long-term applications such as emulsion stabilization. However, P/S systems are known to exhibit nonequilibrium behavior despite steady-state surface characteristics. This work examines the coadsorption of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) using oil/water tensiometry, UV absorption, and vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy. To determine which features do not represent true equilibrium, the molecular details of PSS adsorption are compared for fresh and aged samples. At surfactant concentrations concurrent with bulk precipitation, significant differences between fresh and aged samples indicate that the strong initial coadsorption within this system is a nonequilibrium feature. We conclude that the long equilibration timescales arise from the slow assembly of non-adsorbing polyelectrolyte/micelle complexes below the critical micelle concentration. This study resolves a recent debate regarding system equilibria of surface-active P/S combinations at a water surface.

Effect of molecular structure of eco-friendly glycolipid biosurfactants on the adsorption of hair-care conditioning polymers

Pseudo-binary mixtures of different glycolipids, four different rhamnolipids (RL) and an alkyl polyglucoside (APG), with poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) have been studied in relation to their adsorption onto negatively charged surfaces to shed light on the impact of the molecular structure of surfactants from natural sources (instead of synthetic surfactant, such as sodium laureth sulfate) on the adsorption of hair-conditioning polymers. For this purpose, the self-assembly of such mixtures in aqueous solution and their adsorption onto negatively charged surfaces mimicking the negative charge of damaged hair fibres have been studied combining experiments and self-consistent field (SCF) calculations. The results show that the specific physico-chemical properties of the surfactants (charge, number of sugar rings present in surfactant structure and length of the hydrocarbon length) play a main role in the control of the adsorption process, with the adsorption efficiency and hydration being improved in relation to conventional sulfate-based systems for mixtures of PDADMAC and glycolipids with the shortest alkyl chains. SCF calculations and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis on real hair confirmed such observations. The results allow one to assume that the characteristic of the surfactants, especially rhamnolipids, conditions positively the adsorption potential of polyelectrolytes in these model systems. This study provides important insights on the mechanisms underlying the performance of more complex but eco-friendly washing formulations.
