Traditional practices are undergoing radical transformation as nanomaterials emerge as novel agents in roles traditionally filled by fertilizers, pesticides, and biosensors. Micronutrient management and preservation techniques are further enhanced, indicating a shift towards more nutrient-dense and longevity-oriented food production. Nanoparticles (NPs), with their unique physicochemical properties, such as an extraordinary surface-to-volume ratio, find applications in healthcare, diagnostics, agriculture, and other fields. However, concerns about their potential overuse and bioaccumulation raise unanswered questions about their health effects. Molecule-to-molecule interactions and physicochemical dynamics create pathways through which nanoparticles cause toxicity. The combination of nanotechnology and environmental sustainability principles leads to the examination of green nanoparticle synthesis. Establishing standardized, universally accepted guidelines for evaluating nanomaterial toxicity and protocols for nano-waste disposal is urged to ensure responsible stewardship of this transformative technology. Ephedra intermedia Schrenk & C. A. Mey Methanol Extract: Nanoencapsulation by Mini-Emulsion Polymerization and its Release Trend under Simulated Conditions of the Human Body

In this research, the extract of Ephedra intermedia Schrenk & C.A.Mey. was encapsulated using the mini-emulsion polymerization method based on methyl methacrylate polymers with a nanometer size. The encapsulated extract was characterized using different analytical techniques. Furthermore, the loading efficiency and release of the plant extract were examined. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the formation of an expectational product. The TEM and SEM imaging showed a spherical morphology for the prepared encapsulated extract. The average size of poly-methyl-methacrylate nanoparticles containing Ephedra extract was found to be approximately 47 nm. The extract loading efficiency and encapsulation efficiency test demonstrated a dose-depending behavior on E. intermedia extract for both analyses, which is highly advantageous for traversing biological barriers. The release assay shows a controlled release for the extract at phosphate buffer solution (PBS). A 38 % release was calculated after 36 hours. The results obtained from the present study reveal that encapsulating the plant extract is a suitable alternative to control and increase their medicinal properties.

Recent trends in core/shell nanoparticles: their enzyme-based electrochemical biosensor applications

Improving novel and efficient biosensors for determining organic/inorganic compounds is a challenge in analytical chemistry for clinical diagnosis and research in biomedical sciences. Electrochemical enzyme-based biosensors are one of the commercially successful groups of biosensors that make them highly appealing because of their low cost, high selectivity, and sensitivity. Core/shell nanoparticles have emerged as versatile platforms for developing enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors due to their unique physicochemical properties and tunable surface characteristics. This study provides a comprehensive review of recent trends and advancements in the utilization of core/shell nanoparticles for the development of enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors. Moreover, a statistical evaluation of the studies carried out in this field between 2007 and 2023 is made according to the preferred electrochemical techniques. The recent applications of core/shell nanoparticles in enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors were summarized to quantify environmental pollutants, food contaminants, and clinical biomarkers. Additionally, the review highlights recent innovations and strategies to improve the performance of enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors using core/shell nanoparticles. These include the integration of nanomaterials with specific functions such as hydrophilic character, chemical and thermal stability, conductivity, biocompatibility, and catalytic activity, as well as the development of new hybrid nanostructures and multifunctional nanocomposites.

Liver fibrosis: pathological features, clinical treatment and application of therapeutic nanoagents

Liver fibrosis is a reversible damage-repair response, the pathological features of which mainly include damage to hepatocytes, sinusoid capillarization, hepatic stellate cells activation, excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix and inflammatory response. Although some treatments (including drugs and stem cell therapy) for these pathological features have been shown to be effective, more clinical trials are needed to confirm their effectiveness. In recent years, nanomaterials-based therapies have emerged as an innovative and promising alternative to traditional drugs, being explored for the treatment of liver fibrosis diseases. Natural nanomaterials (including extracellular vesicles) and synthetic nanomaterials (including inorganic nanomaterials and organic nanomaterials) are developed to facilitate drug targeting delivery and combination therapy. In this review, the pathological features of liver fibrosis and the current anti-fibrosis drugs in clinical trials are briefly introduced, followed by a detailed introduction of the therapeutic nanoagents for the precise delivery of anti-fibrosis drugs. Finally, the future development trend in this field is discussed.

Lipid- and Polymer-Based Nanocarrier Platforms for Cancer Vaccine Delivery

Cancer immunotherapy has gained popularity in recent years in the search for effective treatment modalities for various malignancies, particularly those that are resistant to conventional chemo- and radiation therapy. Cancer vaccines target the cancer-immunity cycle by boosting the patient's own immune system to recognize and kill cancer cells, thus serving as both preventative and curative therapeutic tools. Among the different types of cancer vaccines, those based on nanotechnology have shown great promise in advancing the field of cancer immunotherapy. Lipid-based nanoparticles (NPs) have become the most advanced platforms for cancer vaccine delivery, but polymer-based NPs have also received considerable interest. This Review aims to provide an overview of the nanotechnology-enabled cancer vaccine landscape, focusing on recent advances in lipid- and polymer-based nanovaccines and their hybrid structures and discussing the challenges against the clinical translation of these important nanomedicines.

Development of a Nanoparticle System for Controlled Release in Bioprinted Respiratory Scaffolds

The use of nanoparticle systems for the controlled release of growth factors is a promising approach to mimicking of the biochemical environment of native tissues in tissue engineering. However, sustaining growth factor release inside an appropriate therapeutic window is a challenge, particularly in bioprinted scaffolds. In this study, a chitosan-coated alginate-based nanoparticle system loaded with hepatocyte growth factor was developed and then incorporated into bioprinted scaffolds. The release kinetics were investigated with a focus on identifying the impact of the chitosan coating and culture conditions. Our results demonstrated that the chitosan coating decreased the release rate and lessened the initial burst release, while culturing in dynamic conditions had no significant impact compared to static conditions. The nanoparticles were then incorporated into bioinks at various concentrations, and scaffolds with a three-dimensional (3D) structure were bioprinted from the bioinks containing human pulmonary fibroblasts and bronchial epithelial cells to investigate the potential use of a controlled release system in respiratory tissue engineering. It was found that the bioink loaded with a concentration of 4 µg/mL of nanoparticles had better printability compared to other concentrations, while the mechanical stability of the scaffolds was maintained over a 14-day culture period. The examination of the incorporated cells demonstrated a high degree of viability and proliferation with visualization of the beginning of an epithelial barrier layer. Taken together, this study demonstrates that a chitosan-coated alginate-based nanoparticle system allows the sustained release of growth factors in bioprinted respiratory tissue scaffolds.

Future Nanotechnology-Based Strategies for Improved Management of Helicobacter pylori Infection

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a recalcitrant pathogen, which can cause gastric disorders. During the past decades, polypharmacy-based regimens, such as triple and quadruple therapies have been widely used against H. pylori. However, polyantibiotic therapies can disturb the host gastric/gut microbiota and lead to antibiotic resistance. Thus, simpler but more effective approaches should be developed. Here, some recent advances in nanostructured drug delivery systems to treat H. pylori infection are summarized. Also, for the first time, a drug release paradigm is proposed to prevent H. pylori antibiotic resistance along with an IVIVC model in order to connect the drug release profile with a reduction in bacterial colony counts. Then, local delivery systems including mucoadhesive, mucopenetrating, and cytoadhesive nanobiomaterials are discussed in the battle against H. pylori infection. Afterward, engineered delivery platforms including polymer-coated nanoemulsions and polymer-coated nanoliposomes are poposed. These bioinspired platforms can contain an antimicrobial agent enclosed within smart multifunctional nanoformulations. These bioplatforms can prevent the development of antibiotic resistance, as well as specifically killing H. pylori with no or only slight negative effects on the host gastrointestinal microbiota. Finally, the essential checkpoints that should be passed to confirm the potential effectiveness of anti-H. pylori nanosystems are discussed.

Further Improvement Based on Traditional Nanocapsule Preparation Methods: A Review

Nanocapsule preparation technology, as an emerging technology with great development prospects, has uniqueness and superiority in various industries. In this paper, the preparation technology of nanocapsules was systematically divided into three categories: physical methods, chemical methods, and physicochemical methods. The technological innovation of different methods in recent years was reviewed, and the mechanisms of nanocapsules prepared via emulsion polymerization, interface polymerization, layer-by-layer self-assembly technology, nanoprecipitation, supercritical fluid, and nano spray drying was summarized in detail. Different from previous reviews, the renewal iteration of core-shell structural materials was highlighted, and relevant illustrations of their representative and latest research results were reviewed. With the continuous progress of nanocapsule technology, especially the continuous development of new wall materials and catalysts, new preparation technology, and new production equipment, nanocapsule technology will be used more widely in medicine, food, cosmetics, pesticides, petroleum products, and many other fields.

Advanced targeted drug delivery by bioengineered white blood cell-membrane camouflaged nanoparticulate delivery nanostructures

Targeted drug delivery has emerged as a pivotal approach within precision medicine, aiming to optimize therapeutic efficacy while minimizing systemic side effects. Leukocyte membrane coated nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted a lot of interest as an effective approach for delivering targeted drugs, capitalizing on the natural attributes of leukocytes to achieve site-specific accumulation, and heightened therapeutic outcomes. An overview of the present state of the targeted medication delivery research is given in this review. Notably, Leukocyte membrane-coated NPs offer inherent advantages such as immune evasion, extended circulation half-life, and precise homing to inflamed or diseased tissues through specific interactions with adhesion molecules. leukocyte membrane-coated NPs hold significant promise in advancing targeted drug delivery for precision medicine. As research progresses, they are anticipated to contribute to improved therapeutic outcomes, enabling personalized and effective treatments for a wide range of diseases and conditions. The review covers the method of preparation, characterization, and biological applications of leucocytic membrane coated NPs. Further, patents related factors, gap of translation from laboratory to clinic, and future prospective were discussed in detail. Overall, the review covers extensive literature to establish leucocytic membrane NPs for targeted drug delivery.

Eco-Friendly AMPS-Doped Polyaniline/Urethane-Methacrylate Coating as a Corrosion Protection Coating: Electrochemical, Surface, Theoretical, and Thermodynamic Studies

In this study, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS)-doped polyaniline (PANI) fibers were used as polymerizable smart anticorrosive agents to prepare eco-friendly UV-curable anticorrosive coatings. For this purpose, AMPS-doped PANI fibers were synthesized through chemical oxidative interfacial polymerization. The size and chemical structure of the prepared conducting fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, ¹H NMR, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses. As a binder for the prepared conducting fibers, an eco-friendly fluorinated urethane-methacrylate dispersion was synthesized and fully characterized using FTIR analysis. Subsequently, various amounts of the synthesized fibers were mixed with the fluorinated binder to prepare UV-curable anticorrosive coatings. The physicochemical interactions between the PANI fibers and UV-curable binder were studied thoroughly using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses and measurement of the gel contents and adhesion strength of the prepared composite coatings. The corrosion resistance performance of the prepared coatings was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis, and the obtained results revealed that the presence of 2 wt % of the AMPS-doped PANI fibers significantly enhanced the corrosion resistance of the obtained coating. In addition, the corrosion layers of the coatings were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which indicated that the AMPS-doped PANI fibers changed the composition of the corrosion product layer. To expand these attempts, this study also explores the interaction of AMPS-doped PANI fibers with the Fe(100) surface using density functional theory as well as atom in molecule calculations. All of the obtained results proved that the outstanding corrosion protection performance of the prepared composite coatings originated from exceptional chemical interactions between the unsaturated doping agents of the prepared PANI fibers and the UV-cured polymer.

New Technological Approaches for Dental Caries Treatment: From Liquid Crystalline Systems to Nanocarriers

Dental caries is the most common oral disease, with high prevalence rates in adolescents and low-income and lower-middle-income countries. This disease originates from acid production by bacteria, leading to demineralization of the dental enamel and the formation of cavities. The treatment of caries remains a global challenge and the development of effective drug delivery systems is a potential strategy. In this context, different drug delivery systems have been investigated to remove oral biofilms and remineralize dental enamel. For a successful application of these systems, it is necessary that they remain adhered to the surfaces of the teeth to allow enough time for the removal of biofilms and enamel remineralization, thus, the use of mucoadhesive systems is highly encouraged. Among the systems used for this purpose, liquid crystalline systems, polymer-based nanoparticles, lipid-based nanoparticles, and inorganic nanoparticles have demonstrated great potential for preventing and treating dental caries through their own antimicrobial and remineralization properties or through delivering drugs. Therefore, the present review addresses the main drug delivery systems investigated in the treatment and prevention of dental caries.

Dual-Color Photoluminescent Functionalized Nanoparticles for Static-Dynamic Anticounterfeiting and Encryption: First Collaboration of Spiropyran and Coumarin

Increasing the security of anticounterfeiting materials has been the most important challenge in recent years, and the development of dual-color photoluminescent inks with multi-level security, static/dynamic emission, and dynamic color change is an important solution to overcome this problem. In this study, the multi-functionalized copolymer nanoparticles containing different functional groups (with a concentration of 20 wt %), including ester, carboxylic acid, hydroxyl, epoxide, amide, and amine groups were synthesized successfully by the emulsion polymerization method. The results showed that the particle size and morphology of nanoparticles are affected by the polarity of functional groups. The prepared multi-functionalized copolymer nanoparticles were modified physically with spiropyran (photochromic and red fluorescence emission) and coumarin (cyan emission) derivatives to develop dual-color photoluminescent polymer nanoparticles with application in static-dynamic photoluminescent anticounterfeiting inks, which have multi-level security. The investigation of optical properties indicates that the kinetics of photochromism and photoluminescence properties of samples containing spiropyran is dependent on the local polarity on the surface of polymer nanoparticles. Hence, an increase in the polarity (functionalization with amide, carboxylic acid, and hydroxyl groups) has resulted in fast photochromism, high-intensity photoluminescence emission and increased the efficiency of the photoswitchable color change of emission from cyan to pink. Dual-color photoluminescent anticounterfeiting inks were prepared by mixing polymer nanoparticles containing spiropyran with polymer nanoparticles containing coumarin, in different ratios (1:1, 1:3, 1:5, 1:8, and 1:10). Obtained results showed that prepared samples have cyan emission under UV light of 254 nm (static mode), and a dynamic photoswitching of fluorescence emission from cyan to pink (as a function of irradiation time) was also observed under UV-light irradiation of 365 nm, which is well known as a dynamic mode of emission. The responsivity and intensity of dynamic photoluminescence emission are dependent on the local polarity of the surface functional groups, in which the samples based on amide functionalized copolymer nanoparticles displayed high-intensity emission in the static mode and high-intensity photoswitchable dual-color emission in the dynamic mode, in the case of all ratios of colloid solution mixtures. Printing security tags on cellulose paper by dual-color photoluminescent inks indicates advantages such as maximum printability, resolution, brightness, and static-dynamic photoluminescence emission with high intensity for inks based on amide functionalized nanoparticles. The static-dynamic dual-color photoluminescent anticounterfeiting ink with unique properties and multi-level security was reported for the first time by the collaboration of spiropyran and coumarin. This study can open a new approach and window to the future of advanced and high-security anticounterfeiting technologies.

Semiconducting Polymer Dots for Point-of-Care Biosensing and In Vivo Bioimaging: A Concise Review

In recent years, semiconducting polymer dots (Pdots) have attracted much attention due to their excellent photophysical properties and applicability, such as large absorption cross section, high brightness, tunable fluorescence emission, excellent photostability, good biocompatibility, facile modification and regulation. Therefore, Pdots have been widely used in various types of sensing and imaging in biological medicine. More importantly, the recent development of Pdots for point-of-care biosensing and in vivo imaging has emerged as a promising class of optical diagnostic technologies for clinical applications. In this review, we briefly outline strategies for the preparation and modification of Pdots and summarize the recent progress in the development of Pdots-based optical probes for analytical detection and biomedical imaging. Finally, challenges and future developments of Pdots for biomedical applications are given.

Nanomaterial-assisted theranosis of bone diseases

Bone-related diseases refer to a group of skeletal disorders that are characterized by bone and cartilage destruction. Conventional approaches can regulate bone homeostasis to a certain extent. However, these therapies are still associated with some undesirable problems. Fortunately, recent advances in nanomaterials have provided unprecedented opportunities for diagnosis and therapy of bone-related diseases. This review provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of current advanced theranostic nanomaterials in bone-related diseases. First, the potential utility of nanomaterials for biological imaging and biomarker detection is illustrated. Second, nanomaterials serve as therapeutic delivery platforms with special functions for bone homeostasis regulation and cellular modulation are highlighted. Finally, perspectives in this field are offered, including current key bottlenecks and future directions, which may be helpful for exploiting nanomaterials with novel properties and unique functions. This review will provide scientific guidance to enhance the development of advanced nanomaterials for the diagnosis and therapy of bone-related diseases.

Bevacizumab-Controlled Delivery from Polymeric Microparticle Systems as Interesting Tools for Pathologic Angiogenesis Diseases

This work is a comparative study among three different biocompatible and biodegradable polymers, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), poly(ε-caprolactone), and poly(lactic acid), used to produce microparticles for the encapsulation of bevacizumab for drug delivery purposes. All the formulations were produced using the double emulsion water-oil-water evaporation method and characterized in terms of particle mean diameter, particle size distribution, and bevacizumab entrapment efficiency. Bevacizumab cumulative release was taken into consideration to study the dissolution kinetics from the three different polymeric delivery platforms for a period of 50 days at 37 °C in phosphate buffered saline and mathematical models of the drug release kinetic were attempted in order to describe the release phenomena from the different types of the studied microparticles. Finally, cell viability on human endothelial cell line EA.hy926 was studied to define the maximum cytocompatible concentration for each microsystem, registering the mitochondrial functionality through MTS assay.

Exploring Various Techniques for the Chemical and Biological Synthesis of Polymeric Nanoparticles

Nanoparticles (NPs) have remarkable properties for delivering therapeutic drugs to the body’s targeted cells. NPs have shown to be significantly more efficient as drug delivery carriers than micron-sized particles, which are quickly eliminated by the immune system. Biopolymer-based polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) are colloidal systems composed of either natural or synthetic polymers and can be synthesized by the direct polymerization of monomers (e.g., emulsion polymerization, surfactant-free emulsion polymerization, mini-emulsion polymerization, micro-emulsion polymerization, and microbial polymerization) or by the dispersion of preformed polymers (e.g., nanoprecipitation, emulsification solvent evaporation, emulsification solvent diffusion, and salting-out). The desired characteristics of NPs and their target applications are determining factors in the choice of method used for their production. This review article aims to shed light on the different methods employed for the production of PNPs and to discuss the effect of experimental parameters on the physicochemical properties of PNPs. Thus, this review highlights specific properties of PNPs that can be tailored to be employed as drug carriers, especially in hospitals for point-of-care diagnostics for targeted therapies.

Emerging Theranostic Nanomaterials in Diabetes and Its Complications

Diabetes mellitus (DM) refers to a group of metabolic disorders that are characterized by hyperglycemia. Oral subcutaneously administered antidiabetic drugs such as insulin, glipalamide, and metformin can temporarily balance blood sugar levels, however, long-term administration of these therapies is associated with undesirable side effects on the kidney and liver. In addition, due to overproduction of reactive oxygen species and hyperglycemia-induced macrovascular system damage, diabetics have an increased risk of complications. Fortunately, recent advances in nanomaterials have provided new opportunities for diabetes therapy and diagnosis. This review provides a panoramic overview of the current nanomaterials for the detection of diabetic biomarkers and diabetes treatment. Apart from diabetic sensing mechanisms and antidiabetic activities, the applications of these bioengineered nanoparticles for preventing several diabetic complications are elucidated. This review provides an overall perspective in this field, including current challenges and future trends, which may be helpful in informing the development of novel nanomaterials with new functions and properties for diabetes diagnosis and therapy.

A systematic study on the synergistic effects of MWCNTs and core-shell particles on the physicomechanical properties of epoxy resin

Here, core-shell impact modifier particles (CSIMPs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNs) were used as reinforcing agents for improving the toughness and tensile properties of epoxy resin. For this purpose, emulsion polymerization technique was exploited to fabricate poly(butyl acrylate-allyl methacrylate) core-poly(methyl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate) shell impact modifier particles with an average particle size of 407 nm. It was revealed that using a combination of the prepared CSIMPs and MWCNTs could significantly enhance the toughness and tensile properties of the epoxy resin. Also, it was observed that the dominant factors for improving the fracture toughness of the ternary composites are crack deflection/arresting as well as enlarged plastic deformation around the growing crack tip induced by the combination of rigid and soft particles. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with central composite design (CCD) was utilized to study the effects of the amounts of CSIMPs and MWCNTs on the physicomechanical properties of the epoxy resin. The proposed quadratic models were in accordance with the experimental results with correlation coefficient more than 98%. The optimum condition for maximum toughness, elastic modulus, and tensile strength was 3 wt% MWCNT and 1.03 wt% CSIMPs. The sample fabricated in the optimal condition indicated toughness, elastic modulus, and tensile strength equal to 2.2 MPa m1/2, 3014.5 MPa, and 40.6 MPa, respectively.

Striking Back against Fungal Infections: The Utilization of Nanosystems for Antifungal Strategies

Fungal infections have become a major health concern, given that invasive infections by Candida, Cryptococcus, and Aspergillus species have led to millions of mortalities. Conventional antifungal drugs including polyenes, echinocandins, azoles, allylamins, and antimetabolites have been used for decades, but their limitations include off-target toxicity, drug-resistance, poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and weak tissue penetration, which cannot be ignored. These drawbacks have led to the emergence of novel antifungal therapies. In this review, we discuss the nanosystems that are currently utilized for drug delivery and the application of antifungal therapies.

Biopesticide Encapsulation Using Supercritical CO2: A Comprehensive Review and Potential Applications

As an alternative to synthetic pesticides, natural chemistries from living organisms, are not harmful to nontarget organisms and the environment, can be used as biopesticides, nontarget. However, to reduce the reactivity of active ingredients, avoid undesired reactions, protect from physical stress, and control or lower the release rate, encapsulation processes can be applied to biopesticides. In this review, the advantages and disadvantages of the most common encapsulation processes for biopesticides are discussed. The use of supercritical fluid technology (SFT), mainly carbon dioxide (CO₂), to encapsulate biopesticides is highlighted, as they reduce the use of organic solvents, have simpler separation processes, and achieve high-purity particles. This review also presents challenges to be surpassed and the lack of application of SFT for biopesticides in the published literature is discussed to evaluate its potential and prospects.

The key role of the drug self-aggregation ability to obtain optimal nanocarriers based on aromatic-aromatic drug-polymer interactions

The efficient association and controlled release of hydrophilic and aromatic low molecular-weight drugs (HALMD) still remains a challenge due to their relatively weak interactions with excipients and strong affinity to water. Considering that a wide variety of drugs to treat chronic diseases are HALMD, their inclusion in polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) constitutes an attractive possibility by providing to these drugs with controllable physiochemical properties, preventing crisis episodes, decreasing dose-dependent side effects and promoting therapeutic adhesiveness. However, the strong interaction of HALMD with the aqueous medium jeopardizes their encapsulation and controlled release. In this work, the role of the self-assembly tendency of HALMD on their association with the aromatic excipient poly(sodium 4-styrensulfonate) (PSS) to form NPs is studied. For this aim, the widely used drugs amitriptyline (AMT), promethazine (PMZ), and chlorpheniramine (CPM) are selected due to their well described critical aggregation concentration (cac) (36 mM for AMT, 36 mM for PMZ, and 69.5 mM for CPM). These drugs undergo aromatic-aromatic interactions with the polymer, which stabilize their mutual binding, as seen by NMR. The simple mixing of solutions of opposite charged molecules (drug + PSS) allowed obtaining NPs. Importantly, comparing the three drugs, the formation of NPs occurred at significantly lower absolute concentration and significantly lower drug/polymer ratio as the cac takes lower values, indicating a stronger binding to the polymer, as also deduced from the respective drug/polymer dissociation constant values. In addition, the number of formed NPs is similar for all formulations, even though a much lower concentration of the drug and polymer is present in systems comprising lower cac. The obtained NPs are spheroidal and present size between 100 and 160 nm, low polydispersity (≤0.3) and negative zeta potential (from -30 to -60 mV). The association efficiency reaches values ≥ 83% and drug loading could achieve values up to 68% (never evidenced before for systems comprising HALMD). In addition, drug release studies are also significantly influenced by cac, providing more prolonged release for AMT and PMZ (lower cac), whose delivery profiles adjust to the Korsmeyer-Peppas equation. As a novelty of this work, a synergic contribution of drug self-association tendency and aromatic-aromatic interaction between the drug and polymers is highlighted, a fact that could be crucial for the rational design and development of efficient drug delivery systems.

Polymeric-based drug delivery systems for veterinary use: State of the art

One of the challenges to the success of veterinary pharmacotherapy is the limited number of drugs and dosage forms available exclusively to this market, due to the interspecies variability of animals, such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. For this reason, studies in this area have become a highlight, since they are still scarce in comparison with those on human drug use. To overcome many limitations related to the bioavailability, efficacy, and safety of pharmacotherapy in animals, especially livestock and domestic animals, polymers-based drug delivery systems are promising tools if they guarantee greater selectivity and less toxicity in dosage forms. In addition, these tools may be developed according to the great interspecies variability. To contribute to these discussions, this paper provides an updated review of the major polymer-based drug delivery systems projected for veterinary use. Traditional and innovative drug delivery systems based on polymers are presented, with an emphasis on films, microparticles, micelles, nanogels, nanoparticles, tablets, implants and hydrogel-based drug delivery systems. We discuss important concepts for the veterinarian about the mechanisms of drug release and, for the pharmacist, the advantages in the development of pharmaceutical forms for the animal population. Finally, challenges and opportunities are presented in the field of pharmaceutical dosage forms for veterinary use in response to the interests of the pharmaceutical industry.

Composite P(3HB-3HV)-CS Spheres for Enhanced Antibiotic Efficiency

Natural-derived biopolymers are suitable candidates for developing specific and selective performance-enhanced antimicrobial formulations. Composite polymeric particles based on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) and chitosan, P(3HB-3HV)-CS, are herein proposed as biocompatible and biodegradable delivery systems for bioproduced antibiotics: bacitracin (Bac), neomycin (Neo) and kanamycin (Kan). The stimuli-responsive spheres proved efficient platforms for boosting the antibiotic efficiency and antibacterial susceptibility, as evidenced against Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Absent or reduced proinflammatory effects were evidenced on macrophages in the case of Bac-/Neo- and Kan-loaded spheres, respectively. Moreover, these systems showed superior ability to sustain and promote the proliferation of dermal fibroblasts, as well as to preserve their ultrastructure (membrane and cytoskeleton integrity) and to exhibit anti-oxidant activity. The antibiotic-loaded P(3HB-3HV)-CS spheres proved efficient alternatives for antibacterial strategies.

Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications: Production, Characterisations, Recent Trends and Difficulties

Designing of nanomaterials has now become a top-priority research goal with a view to developing specific applications in the biomedical fields. In fact, the recent trends in the literature show that there is a lack of in-depth reviews that specifically highlight the current knowledge based on the design and production of nanomaterials. Considerations of size, shape, surface charge and microstructures are important factors in this regard as they affect the performance of nanoparticles (NPs). These parameters are also found to be dependent on their synthesis methods. The characterisation techniques that have been used for the investigation of these nanomaterials are relatively different in their concepts, sample preparation methods and obtained results. Consequently, this review article aims to carry out an in-depth discussion on the recent trends on nanomaterials for biomedical engineering, with a particular emphasis on the choices of the nanomaterials, preparation methods/instruments and characterisations techniques used for designing of nanomaterials. Key applications of these nanomaterials, such as tissue regeneration, medication delivery and wound healing, are also discussed briefly. Covering this knowledge gap will result in a better understanding of the role of nanomaterial design and subsequent larger-scale applications in terms of both its potential and difficulties.

Well Defined Poly(Methyl Methacrylate)-Fe3O4/Poly(Vinyl Pivalate) Core-Shell Superparamagnetic Nanoparticles: Design and Evaluation of In Vitro Cytotoxicity Activity Against Cancer Cells

The objective of this work is to develop and characterize polymeric nanoparticles with core-shell morphology through miniemulsion polymerization combined with seeded emulsion polymerization, aiming at the application in the treatment of vascular tumors via intravascular embolization. The synthesis of the core-shell nanocomposites was divided into two main steps: (i) Formation of the core structure, consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate)/magnetic oxide coated with oleic acid (OM-OA) via miniemulsion and (ii) shell structure produced through seeded emulsion polymerization of vinyl pivalate. Nanocomposites containing about 8 wt.% of OM-OA showed high colloidal stability, mean diameter of 216.8 nm, spherical morphology, saturation magnetization (Ms) of 4.65 emu·g-1 (57.41 emu·g-1 of Fe3O4), preserved superparamagnetic behavior and glass transition temperature (Tg) of 111.8 °C. TEM micrographs confirmed the obtaining of uniformly dispersed magnetic nanoparticles in the PMMA and that the core-shell structure was obtained by seeded emulsion with Ms of 1.35 emu·g-1 (56.25 emu·g-1 of Fe3O4) and Tg of 114.7 °C. In vitro cytotoxicity assays against murine tumor of melanoma (B16F10) and human Keratinocytes (HaCaT) cell lines were carried out showing that the core-shell magnetic polymeric materials (a core, consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate)/Fe3O4 and, a shell, formed by poly(vinyl pivalate)) presented high cell viabilities for both murine melanoma tumor cell lines, B16F10, and human keratinocyte cells, HaCaT.

Photoluminescent and Chromic Nanomaterials for Anticounterfeiting Technologies: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

Counterfeiting and inverse engineering of security and confidential documents, such as banknotes, passports, national cards, certificates, and valuable products, has significantly been increased, which is a major challenge for governments, companies, and customers. From recent global reports published in 2017, the counterfeiting market was evaluated to be $107.26 billion in 2016 and forecasted to reach $206.57 billion by 2021 at a compound annual growth rate of 14.0%. Development of anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies with multilevel securities is a powerful solution to overcome this challenge. Stimuli-chromic (photochromic, hydrochromic, and thermochromic) and photoluminescent (fluorescent and phosphorescent) compounds are the most significant and applicable materials for development of complex anticounterfeiting inks with a high-security level and fast authentication. Highly efficient anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies have been developed to reach high security and efficiency. Applicable materials for anticounterfeiting applications are generally based on photochromic and photoluminescent compounds, for which hydrochromic and thermochromic materials have extensively been used in recent decades. A wide range of materials, such as organic and inorganic metal complexes, polymer nanoparticles, quantum dots, polymer dots, carbon dots, upconverting nanoparticles, and supramolecular structures, could display all of these phenomena depending on their physical and chemical characteristics. The polymeric anticounterfeiting inks have recently received significant attention because of their high stability for printing on confidential documents. In addition, the printing technologies including hand-writing, stamping, inkjet printing, screen printing, and anticounterfeiting labels are discussed for introduction of the most efficient methods for application of different anticounterfeiting inks. This review would help scientists to design and develop the most applicable encryption, authentication, and anticounterfeiting technologies with high security, fast detection, and potential applications in security marking and information encryption on various substrates.

Nanosystems against candidiasis: a review of studies performed over the last two decades

The crescent number of cases of candidiasis and the increase in the number of infections developed by non-albicans species and by multi-resistant strains has taken the attention of the scientific community, which has been searching for new therapeutic alternatives. Among the alternatives found the use of nanosystems for delivery of drugs already commercialized and new biomolecules have grown, in order to increase stability, solubility, optimize efficiency and reduce adverse effects. In view of the growing number of studies involving technological alternatives for the treatment of candidiasis, the present review came with the intention of gathering studies from the last two decades that used nanotechnology for the treatment of candidiasis, as well as analysing them critically and pointing out the future perspectives for their application with this purpose. Different studies were considered for the development of this review, addressing nanosystems such as metallic nanoparticles, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, liposomes, nanoemulsion, microemulsion, solid lipid nanoparticle, nanostructured lipid carrier, lipidic nanocapsules and liquid crystals; and different clinical presentations of candidiasis. As a general overview, nanotechnology has proven to be an important ally for the treatment against the diversity of candidiasis found in the clinic, whether in increasing the effectiveness of commercialized drugs and reducing their adverse effects, as well as allowing exploring more effectively properties therapeutics of new biomolecules.

Recent Advances in the Structural Design of Photosensitive Agent Formulations Using "Soft" Colloidal Nanocarriers

The growing demand for effective delivery of photosensitive active compounds has resulted in the development of colloid chemistry and nanotechnology. Recently, many kinds of novel formulations with outstanding pharmaceutical potential have been investigated with an expansion in the design of a wide variety of "soft" nanostructures such as simple or multiple (double) nanoemulsions and lipid formulations. The latter can then be distinguished into vesicular, including liposomes and "smart" vesicles such as transferosomes, niosomes and ethosomes, and non-vesicular nanosystems with solid lipid nanoparticles and nanostructured lipid carriers. Encapsulation of photosensitive agents such as drugs, dyes, photosensitizers or antioxidants can be specifically formulated by the self-assembly of phospholipids or other amphiphilic compounds. They are intended to match unique pharmaceutic and cosmetic requirements and to improve their delivery to the target site via the most common, i.e., transdermal, intravenous or oral administration routes. Numerous surface modifications and functionalization of the nanostructures allow increasing their effectiveness and, consequently, may contribute to the treatment of many diseases, primarily cancer. An increasing article number is evidencing significant advances in applications of the different classes of the photosensitive agents incorporated in the "soft" colloidal nanocarriers that deserved to be highlighted in the present review.

Low Ppm Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization in (Mini)Emulsion Systems

In the last decade, unceasing interest in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been noted, especially in aqueous dispersion systems. Emulsion or miniemulsion is a preferred environment for industrial polymerization due to easier heat dissipation and lower production costs associated with the use of water as a dispersant. The main purpose of this review is to summarize ATRP methods used in emulsion media with different variants of initiating systems. A comparison of a dual over single catalytic approache by interfacial and ion pair catalysis is presented. In addition, future development directions for these methods are suggested for better use in biomedical and electronics industries.

Stimuli-responsive release and efficient siRNA delivery in non-small cell lung cancer by a poly(l-histidine)-based multifunctional nanoplatform

Small interfering RNA (siRNA) has extensive potential for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). While both cationic lipids and polymers have demonstrated promise to facilitate siRNA encapsulation, they can also hamper cytosolic siRNA release and induce severe cytotoxicity. To address these issues, a unique polymer hybrid nanoparticle (NP) nanoplatform was developed for multistage siRNA delivery based on both pH-responsive and endo/lysosomal escape characteristics, which was formed via a combination of an electrostatic interactions between the copolymer methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(l-histidine)-poly(sulfadimethoxine) (mPEG-PHis-PSD, shortened to PHD), dendritic poly-l-lysine (PLL) and PLK1 siRNA (shortened to siPLK1). The biological composition of the proton sponge effect polymer of the PHis chain, which was in position to make efficient endo/lysosomal escape, and the pH-responsive polymer of the PSD fragment, which could accelerate the release of siPLK1. In the present study, the NP illustrated excellent physiochemical properties and rapid endo/lysosomal escape in vitro. Besides this, compared with the PD/PLL/siRNA formulation, the PHD/PLL/siRNA NP indicated higher cellular uptake, and higher cell cytotoxicity in vitro. The in vivo results demonstrated that the PHD/PLL/siRNA NP exhibited the strongest tumor growth inhibition rate and ideal safety compared with the control and other siPLK1-treated formulations, which can be mainly attributed to pH-induced instantaneous dissociation and efficient endo/lysosomal escape arising from the PHD copolymer. Consequently, the above evidence indicates that the PHD/PLL/siRNA NP is a favorable gene delivery system and provides a potential strategy for siRNA delivery.

Coating and Functionalization Strategies for Nanogels and Nanoparticles for Selective Drug Delivery

Drug delivery is a fascinating research field with several development opportunities. Great attention is now focused on colloidal systems, nanoparticles, and nanogels and on the possibility of modifying them in order to obtain precise targeted drug delivery systems. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the main available surface functionalization and coating strategies that can be adopted in order to modify the selectivity of the nanoparticles in the delivery process and obtain a final system with great targeted drug delivery ability. We also highlight the most important fields of application of these kinds of delivery systems and we propose a comparison between the advantages and disadvantages of the described functionalization strategies.

Study on MMA and BA Emulsion Copolymerization Using 2,4-Diphenyl-4-methyl-1-pentene as the Irreversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Agent

As a chain transfer agent, 2,4-diphenyl-4-methyl-1-pentene (αMSD) was first introduced in the emulsion binary copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) based on an irreversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (AFCT) mechanism. The effects of αMSD on molecular weight and its distribution, the degree of polymerization, polymerization rate, monomer conversion, particle size, and tensile properties of the formed latexes were systematically investigated. Its potential chain transfer mechanism was also explored according to the ¹H NMR analysis. The results showed that the increase in the content of αMSD could lead to a decline in molecular weight, its distribution, and the degree of polymerization. The mass percentage of MMA in the synthesized polymers was also improved as the amounts of αMSD increased. The chain transfer coefficients of αMSD for MMA and BA were 0.62 and 0.47, respectively. The regulation mechanism of αMSD in the emulsion polymerization of acrylates was found to be consistent with Yasummasa's theory. Additionally, monomer conversion decreased greatly to 47.3% when the concentration of αMSD was higher than 1 wt% due to the extremely low polymerization rate. Moreover, the polymerization rate was also decreased probably due to the desorption and lower reactivity of the regenerative radicals from αMSD. Finally, the tensile properties of the resulting polyacrylate films were significantly affected due to the presence of αMSD.

Influence of ultrasound irradiation on the intrinsic viscosity of guar gum-PEG/rosin glycerol ester nanoparticles

Novel Guar Gum (GG) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer blends with rosin glycerol ester (RE) nanoparticle was synthesized under ultrasonic irradiation at different composition ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 2:1, and 4:1). The intrinsic viscosities of the nanoparticles were investigated using ultrasound irradiation to determine the miscibility of the blends in solution as affected by salt, sonication time, temperature, and pH. The intrinsic viscosities of the nanosystems were compared with five different models, including Huggins, Kraemer, Tanglertpaibul-Rao, Higiro, and Rao. The Tanglertpaibul-Rao was the best model and the intrinsic viscosities of 138,27, 142,94 and 163,29 dl/g were reported for GG-PEG/RE (1:1,1:2,1:4), respectively. The viscosity results reveal that the blend containing 1:2 (GG-PEG/RE) was an optimum miscible blend. The miscibility behaviour of the polymeric nanoparticles was investigated using the voluminosity (VE), shape factor (υ), creaming index (CI) parameter, and the Krigbaum and Wall parameter (Δb), which account for the intermolecular interactions. When compared to the intrinsic viscosity results of the nanoparticles, the miscibility-improving effect of sub-300 nm GG-PEG/RE nanoparticles is clearly proven due to the ultrasonic effect. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used for characterization of the polymeric nanoparticles.
