Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Globally, hospital malnutrition prevalence is estimated at 20-50%, with little known about the situation in African hospitals. The aim of this scoping review was to appraise the current evidence base regarding the prevalence of adult hospital malnutrition and related assessment practices in an African context. METHODS A comprehensive and exhaustive search strategy was undertaken to search seven electronic bibliographic databases (including Africa-specific databases) from inception until August 2022 for articles/resources reporting on the prevalence of adult hospital malnutrition in an African setting. Two reviewers independently reviewed abstracts and full-text articles and data extraction was undertaken in duplicate. RESULTS We screened the titles and abstracts of 7537 records and included 28 studies. Most of the included studies were conducted in the East African region (n = 12), with ten studies from South Africa. Most studies were single-centre studies (n = 22; 79%), including 23 to 2126 participants across all studies. A variety of study populations were investigated with most described as medical and surgical populations (n = 14; 50%). Malnutrition risk prevalence was reported to be between 23% and 74%, using a variety of nutritional screening tools (including MNA-SF/LF, NRS-2002, MUST, NRI, GNRI). Malnutrition prevalence was reported to be between 8% and 85%, using a variety of tools and parameters, including ASPEN and ESPEN guidelines, SGA, MNA-SF/LF, anthropometric and biochemical indices, with one study using the GLIM criteria to diagnose malnutrition. CONCLUSIONS Both malnutrition risk and malnutrition prevalence are alarmingly high in African adult hospitalised patients. The prevalence of malnutrition differs significantly among studies, owing in part to the variety of tools used and variability in cut-offs for measurements, underscoring the importance of adopting a standardised approach. Realities in the African context include limited nutritional screening and assessment, poor referral practices, and a unique disease burden. General awareness is needed, and routine nutritional screening practices with appropriate nutrition support action should be implemented as a matter of urgency in African hospitals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/SCOPE The Clinical Nurse Specialist in Nutrition is a professional capable of providing specialist clinical assistance and leadership-related clinical nutrition. To date, although their role has already been identified, there is still uncertainty about how this figure can actually fit into the various global health systems. The purpose of this review is to clarify and define the role of this professional aimed at analysing clinical experiences and data from nutrition scientific societies. METHODOLOGY A systematic literature review was conducted using the Prisma Statement in the Cochrane Library databases and subsequently in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science. In addition, a manual search of studies published in Google Scholar was conducted for the analysis of 'grey literature'. Out of 3,320 identified records, 20 studies were included in the present review. [Correction added on 06 June 2024, after first online publication: The preceding sentence has been corrected from "Out of 2,348 identified records, 21 studies were included in the present review." to "Out of 3,320 identified records, 20 studies were included in the present review" in this version.] RESULTS: The development of specific training, certification and qualification protection courses is contributing to the development of this professional in various hospital and community clinical contexts. The clinical experiences identified have shown that this figure is able to provide specialist assistance by offering high levels of safety, efficacy and quality of the care provided. CONCLUSIONS/ IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING The implementation of nurse nutrition specialist, to date, is still limited at the global level, and training programmes coordinated between scientific societies and nursing universities could be the basis for the development of this specialization in countries where today this figure is not yet present.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of clinically avoidable enteral nutrition interruptions is high. ICU nurses, as the implementers and monitors of enteral nutrition, have a close relationship between their cognitive level of enteral nutrition interruption and the incidence of enteral nutrition interruption. The level of ICU nurses' cognition of enteral nutrition interruption and the key factors influencing the level of ICU nurses' cognition of enteral nutrition interruption are not known. OBJECTIVES This study aims to explore the cognitive level of ICU nurses on enteral nutrition interruption and delve into the key factors that affect their cognitive level from the perspective of management. DESIGN A sequential explanatory mixed methods research design was used. METHODS With the convenience sampling method, an online survey questionnaire was distributed to ICU nurses in Chongqing, and 336 valid questionnaires were collected. After the survey, ICU managers were invited to participate in qualitative interviews, in which 10 participants from five hospitals completed face-to-face individual semi-structured interviews and were analyzed with thematic analysis. RESULTS The survey found that ICU nurses had a good level of cognition towards enteral nutrition interruption but poor knowledge about the definition, causes, and consequences of enteral nutrition interruption, as well as negative attitudes toward active learning, assessment, and communication. And the longer work time in the ICU, joining the nutrition team, receiving systematic training, and acquiring relevant knowledge from academic journals more frequently were favorable to improving ICU nurses' knowledge level of enteral nutrition interruption. Personal interviews further identified the key factors affecting their cognitive level, including (1) lack of knowledge, (2) lack of proactive thinking, (3) lack of enteral nutrition management programs, and (4) lack of quality management tools for enteral nutrition interruption. CONCLUSION Although ICU nurses demonstrate a relatively high level of cognition, there is still room for improvement. ICU administrators must take specific measures to improve the knowledge of ICU nurses, especially in non-tertiary hospitals, in order to prevent nurse-induced enteral nutrition interruption in all ICUs and improve medical quality. Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) printing is one of the world's top novel technologies in the food industry due to the production of food in different conditions and places (restaurants, homes, catering, schools, for dysphagia patients, and astronauts' food) and the production of personalized food. Nowadays, 3D printers are used in the main food industries, including meat, dairy, cereals, fruits, and vegetables, and have been able to produce successfully on a small scale. However, due to the expansion of this technology, it has challenges such as high-scale production, selection of printable food, formulation optimization, and food production according to the consumer's opinion. Food additives (gums, enzymes, proteins, starches, polyphenols, spices, probiotics, algae, edible insects, oils, salts, vitamins, flavors, and by-products) are one of the main components of the formulation that can be effective in food production according to the consumer's attitude. Food additives can have the highest impact on textural and sensory characteristics, which can be effective in improving consumer attitudes and reducing food neophobia. Most of the 3D-printed food cannot be printed without the presence of hydrocolloids, because the proper flow of the selected formulation is one of the key factors in improving the quality of the printed product. Functional additives such as probiotics can be useful for specific purposes and functional food production. Food personalization for specific diseases with 3D printing technology requires a change in the formulation, which is closely related to the selection of correct food additives. For example, the production of 3D-printed plant-based steaks is not possible without the presence of additives, or the production of food for dysphagia patients is possible in many cases by adding hydrocolloids. In general, additives can improve the textural, rheological, nutritional, and sensory characteristics of 3D printed foods; so, investigating the mechanism of the additives on all the characteristics of the printed product can provide a wide perspective for industrial production and future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is common among the elderly and has significant implications for hospitalization outcomes. This is particularly true for severe illnesses such as sepsis, given age-related physiological changes and comorbidities. OBJECTIVE This study examined how malnutrition affected hospitalization outcomes in older adults admitted for sepsis. MATERIALS & METHODS A prospective cohort study was conducted at Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, Pakistan, from January to December 2023, focusing on 390 sepsis patients aged 55 years and older. Data on clinical history, length of stay, mortality rates, comorbidities, and nutritional assessments were collected using standardized forms. After controlling for confounding variables, statistical analysis using SPSS version 23 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) examined the relationship between hospitalization outcomes and nutritional status. RESULTS The research included 390 elderly sepsis patients and showed significant variations in the demographics, comorbidities, and severity of disease between the well-nourished and malnourished groups. Malnourished patients had higher rates of ICU admission (52.82% vs. 29.23%), mechanical ventilation (45.13% vs. 16.41%), mortality (27.18% vs. 14.87%), and 30-day readmission (28.21% vs. 12.82%) as compared to the well-nourished group. They also had longer hospital stays (18.1 days vs. 12.6 days). Malnutrition significantly influenced outcomes, with multivariate analysis indicating it as a predictor of longer stays (β = 2.8, p < 0.001) and increased mortality risk (OR = 3.2, 95% CI: 1.9-5.4, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Malnutrition significantly worsens outcomes for elderly sepsis patients, increasing ICU admissions, ventilation needs, mortality rates, and readmissions, emphasizing the need for proactive nutritional interventions.

Abstract
Background and aim Malnutrition among intensive care unit (ICU) patients is associated with a higher risk of mortality and prolonged hospitalization. However, the influence of malnutrition on severe outcomes of ICU patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is unclear. By evaluating the effect of malnutrition on the outcomes of COVID-19 in the ICU in older adult patients, this study will contribute to new knowledge of assessing the nutritional status and recovery of these patients. Methods In the current single center prospective study, 310 critically ill COVID-19 patients with an age range of ≥65 years were recruited. Data on demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters, comorbidities, medications, and types of mechanical ventilation were collected in the first 24 h of ICU admission. Malnutrition was defined based on the two-step approach of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) scale at baseline. During the 45 days after the baseline, we collected data on delirium incidence, mortality, invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) requirement, length of ICU and hospital admission, and re-hospitalization. Results In this study, the prevalence of malnutrition was 63.4% among critically ill COVID-19 patients. During the 45-day follow-up, 190 (61.3%) COVID-19 deaths were recorded among the baseline 310 patients. After controlling for potential confounders, malnutrition was associated with an increased risk of delirium so malnourished COVID-19 patients had a significantly 35% higher risk of delirium than those without malnutrition (HR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.01-1.83). Such a significant association was not for COVID-19 mortality and IMV requirement. In addition, malnutrition was associated with a significantly 84% greater odds of prolonged ICU admission (OR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.09-3.10). No significant association was seen between malnutrition and re-hospitalization and also prolonged hospital admission. Conclusion Malnutrition was associated with an increased risk of delirium and prolonged ICU admission among critically ill older adult COVID-19 patients. Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of malnutrition could be a key component in improving outcomes in these patients.

Abstract
Background: This study explores COVID-19 emergency admission and length of hospital stay hospitalization outcomes for Long-Term Care Facility (LTCF) residents with dementia. Methods: Utilizing a cross-sectional case control design, we employed logistic regression to analyze Texas Inpatient Public Use Data File (PUDF) for 1,413 dementia patients and 1,674 non-dementia patients (>60 years) to predict emergency admission and length of hospital stay with mediation by pre-existing conditions. Results: LTCF residents with dementia have a higher likelihood of COVID-19 emergency admission and shorter hospital stays. Adjusting for confounders of demographics, health insurance, and lifestyle, dementia diagnosis remained significantly associated with emergency admission and shorter hospital stays with preexisting conditions. Conclusion: Findings underscore the heightened risk for adverse COVID-19 hospitalization care disparities with dementia. Targeted health support programs for LTCF residents with dementia should aim to improve their COVID19 hospitalization outcomes, treating pre-existing health conditions and reducing their risk for excess mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition and increased systemic inflammatory responses are highly prevalent in patients with cancer and they have a negative effect on prognosis. We aimed to develop a nutrition-inflammation prognostic grading system (NIPGS) for patients with cancer, which incorporates the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS 2002) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. METHODS This multicenter retrospective cohort study totally included 6891 patients diagnosed with cancer. A 4 × 4 matrix incorporating the four NRS 2002 categories within each of the four CRP categories was constructed. Groups with approximate hazard ratios (HRs) were clustered into one grade. The NIPGS consists of four grades, with the survival rate gradually decreasing from Grades 1 to 4. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS) and comprehensive survival analyses were performed. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 18.70 months, 2818 death cases occurred. Kaplan-Meier curve showed the survival rate decreased from Grades 1 to 4 of NIPGS (P < 0.001). The NIPGS was an independent risk factor associated with OS adjusting for confounders, with HRs increasing from 1.22 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-1.36; P < 0.001) in Grade 2, 1.58 (95% CI, 1.39-1.80; P < 0.001) in Grade 3 to 1.92 (95% CI, 1.73-2.13; P < 0.001) in Grade 4. A high NIPGS grade was also associated with an increased risk of short-term mortality, poor quality of life, and longer hospital stay and expenses. Two internal validation cohorts confirmed the results of our study. CONCLUSION The NIPGS could be an effective prognostic tool for patients with cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The present study evaluated the lipid profile of enteral nutrition formulas with added fish oil used in a public hospital, with an emphasis on the fatty acid (FA) composition. METHODS FA composition was determined using gas chromatography coupled to a flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Nine enteral nutrition formulas were evaluated and the results obtained were compared with those reported on the formulas labels. RESULTS The sample with the highest percentage of added fish oil according to the label information had the lowest total amounts of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (EPA + DHA) (p < 0.05). In the evaluation of the total amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids (ΣPUFA/ΣSFA) ratio, five samples were not within the values recommended by Brazilan and international health regulatory agencies. Regarding the n-6/n-3 fatty acids ratio, five samples showed values higher than the recommended ratio. It was observed that EPA + DHA content was positively correlated with the cost of the diet. Importantly, we also found that there was a significant difference between the results of our analysis and the descriptions found on the labels for fatty acids n-6, n-3, EPA, DHA, SFA, PUFA and MUFA. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the discrepancies for fatty acids between the values obtained in the analyses and the values reported on the labels highlight the need for more rigorous inspection when public hospitals purchase enteral nutrition formulas with added fish oil, since the administration of formulas with inadequate levels of FA in hospitalized patients can compromise clinical results during the hospitalization period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common rhythm disorder in the elderly. The AF can cause life-threatening thromboembolic complications. Therefore, there is a need to determine the risk factors of AF. In this study, we aimed to examine the association of markers of malnutrition with AF in individuals aged 75 years and older and to find the factors that may affect mortality. METHODS In this prospective study, 358 consecutive individuals aged 75 years and older presenting to the cardiology outpatient clinic were included. All participants were divided into AF and sinus rhythm (SR) groups. In addition, a questionnaire and scoring system were used to assess malnutrition status. Information was obtained from all patients through outpatient clinic visits or telephone interviews for one year. Death from any cause was considered as the endpoint. RESULTS AF was observed in 71 (19.8%) patients. Death was higher in patients with AF (p < 0.001), high CONUT score (p = 0.018), and GLIM malnutrition (p = 0.018). GLIM malnutrition caused a 2.8-fold increase in the development of AF. CONCLUSIONS Screening for malnutrition in the elderly is essential. According to GLIM criteria, malnutrition may play a role in the development of AF and increase one-year mortality in the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The proportion of older adults in the world is constantly increasing, and malnutrition is a common challenge among the older adults aged ≥65 years. This poses a need for better tools to prevent, assess, and treat malnutrition among older adults. MyFood is a decision support system developed with the intention to prevent and treat malnutrition. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the ability of the MyFood app to estimate the intake of energy, protein, fluids, and food and beverage items among free-living older adults aged ≥65 years, primarily at an individual level and secondarily at a group level. In addition, the aim was to measure the experiences of free-living older adults using the app. METHODS Participants were instructed to record their dietary intake in the MyFood app for 4 consecutive days. In addition, each participant completed two 24-hour recalls, which were used as a reference method to evaluate the dietary assessment function in the MyFood app. Differences in the estimations of energy, protein, fluid, and food groups were analyzed at both the individual and group levels, by comparing the recorded intake in MyFood with the 2 corresponding recalls and by comparing the mean of all 4 recording days with the mean of the 2 recalls, respectively. A short, study-specific questionnaire was used to measure the participants' experiences with the app. RESULTS This study included 35 free-living older adults residing in Norway. Approximately half of the participants had ≥80% agreement between MyFood and the 24-hour recalls for energy intake on both days. For protein and fluids, approximately 60% of the participants had ≥80% agreement on the first day of comparison. Dinner was the meal with the lowest agreement between the methods, at both the individual and group levels. MyFood tended to underestimate the intake of energy, protein, fluid, and food items at both the individual and group levels. The food groups that achieved the greatest agreement between the 2 methods were eggs, yogurt, self-composed dinner, and hot beverages. All participants found the app easy to use, and 74% (26/35) of the participants reported that the app was easy to navigate. CONCLUSIONS The results showed that the MyFood app tended to underestimate the participants' dietary intake compared with the 24-hour recalls at both the individual and group levels. The app's ability to estimate intake within food groups was greater for eggs, yogurt, and self-composed dinner than for spreads, mixed meals, vegetables, and snacks. The app was well accepted among the study participants and may be a useful tool among free-living older adults, given that the users are provided follow-up and support in how to record their dietary intake.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phase angle (PhA) has been used as mortality prognostic, but there are no studies about its possible use as a screening tool. Therefore, an assessment of the possible utility of PhA in clinical practice is required. The aim of this systematic review was to explore all recent available evidence of PhA, and its possible utility as a screening tool in clinical practice in subjects with chronic metabolic diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS This systematic review was performed and written as stated in the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect and SciElo. In order to be considered eligible, within the entire search, only articles involving PhA and their utility in metabolic diseases were included. RESULTS PhA was associated with hyperuricemia and vitamin D deficiency in obese subjects, and decreased cardiovascular risk and malnutrition in hospitalized patients. CONCLUSION PhA may be a potential screening tool in clinical practice to evaluate different biomarkers, cardiovascular risk, and nutritional diagnosis in metabolic diseases in adults.

Abstract
Background Nutritional status is related to the prognosis and length of hospital stay (LOHS) of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). This study aimed to assess how nutritional status affects LOHS for patients with AF. Methods We performed retrospective analysis of the medical records of 1,813 patients admitted urgently with a diagnosis of AF to the Institute of Heart Diseases of the University Clinical Hospital in Wroclaw, Poland. Results In total, 1,813 patients were included in the analysis. The average LOHS in the entire group was 3.53 ± 3.41 days. The mean BMI was 28.7 kg/m2 (SD: 5.02). Patients who were hospitalized longer were statistically more likely to have a Nutritional Risk Score (NRS) ≥3 (p = 0.028). A higher percentage of longer hospitalized patients with LDL levels below 70 mg/dl (p < 0.001) and those with HDL ≥40 mg/dl (p < 0.001) were observed. Study participants with NRS ≥3 were an older group (M = 76.3 years), with longer mean LOHS (M = 4.44 days). The predictors of LOHS in the univariate model were age (OR = 1.04), LDL (OR = 0.99), HDL (OR = 0.98), TC (OR = 0.996), CRP (OR = 1, 02, p < 0.001), lymphocytes (OR = 0.97, p = 0.008) and in the multivariate model were age, LDL (mg/dl), HDL (mg/dl), Na, and K. Conclusion For nutritional status, factors indicating the risk of prolonged hospitalization in patients with AF are malnutrition, lower serum LDL, HDL, potassium, and sodium levels identified at the time of admission to the cardiology department. Assessment of nutritional status in patients with AF is important both in the context of evaluating obesity and malnutrition status, as both conditions can alter the prognosis of patients. Further studies are needed to determine the exact impact of the above on the risk of prolonged hospitalization.

Abstract
Background Malnutrition is a common problem in cancer patients. It has an impact on all aspects of the patient's life such as increasing the risk of infection, treatment toxicity, hospital stay, and health-care costs. Factors influencing the nutritional status of adult cancer patients undertaking chemotherapy treatment in Ethiopia have not been thoroughly investigated. As a result, the purpose of this study is to assess the nutritional status and its determinants among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Objectives The objective of this study is to determine the nutritional status and its determinants among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Oncology Treatment Center, from January to May 2021. The data were gathered through a face-to-face interview and chart review method. Epi Data 4.6 was used to enter the data, which was then exported to SPSS version 25 for statistical analysis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between nutritional status and potential risk factors. A P value less than 0.05 was used to determine statistical significance. Result This study revealed that 48.1% of participants have some level of malnutrition. Lowest wealth index AOR 0.06 (0.016–0.2), food insecurity AOR 0.1 (0.05–0.24), vomiting AOR 0.2 (0.110–.444), poor appetite AOR 0.2 (0.11–0.44), no diarrhea AOR 2.6 (1.34–5.00), and poor functioning AOR 0.3 (0.2–0.54) were significantly associated with good nutritional status. Conclusion and Recommendation. The prevalence of malnutrition among adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment at HUCSH was high. Wealth index, food security, poor appetite, diarrhea, and performance status were significantly correlated with the nutritional status of the patients. To improve the patient's nutritional status, economic support, early nutritional screening, and assessment, management of chemotherapy-induced symptoms should be considered.

Abstract
Introduction Nutrition plays a significant role in the life of every individual and helps in recovering from any injury including surgery. Pre-treatment malnutrition is found in 15%-40% of cases and can influence treatment outcome. The study aims to determine the impact of nutritional status on the post-operative outcome after head and neck cancer surgery. Materials and Methods This study was carried out in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery for a period of one year from May 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021. Only surgical cases were taken up for the study. The cases (Group A) had a thorough nutritional assessment and dietary intervention if necessary. The dietician did the assessment via Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) questionnaire. After the evaluation, they were again subdivided into two subgroups depending on their nutritional status - well nourished (SGA-A) and malnourished (SGA-B and C). Dietary counselling was given for minimum 15 days preoperatively. The cases were compared with a matched control group (Group B). Results Both the groups were well matched in terms of the site of primary tumour and duration of surgery. Around 70% were found to be malnourished in Group A. With dietary counselling, there has been a significant improvement in various parameters of post-operative outcome (P < 0.05). Discussion This study highlights the close association and the importance of nutritional assessment for all head and neck cancer cases planned for surgery for an uneventful post-operative outcome. Adequate nutritional assessment and dietary intervention in the pre-operative period can go a long way in reducing post-operative morbidity in surgical patients.

Abstract
This review aims to identify hospital food service strategies to improve food consumption among hospitalized patients. A systematic search that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria was manually conducted through Web of Science and Scopus by an author, and the ambiguities were clarified by two senior authors. The quality assessment was separately conducted by two authors, and the ambiguities were clarified with all the involved authors. Qualitative synthesis was used to analyze and summarized the findings. A total of 2432 articles were identified by searching the databases, and 36 studies were included. The majority of the studies applied menu modifications and meal composition interventions (n = 12, 33.3%), or included the implementation of the new food service system (n = 8, 22.2%), protected mealtimes, mealtime assistance and environmental intervention (n = 7, 19.4%), and attractive meal presentation (n = 3, 8.3%). Previous studies that used multidisciplinary approaches reported a significant improvement in food intake, nutritional status, patient satisfaction and quality of life (n = 6, 16.7%). In conclusion, it is suggested that healthcare institutions consider applying one or more of the listed intervention strategies to enhance their foodservice operation in the future.
