Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Body shape expressed as the trunk-to-leg volume ratio is associated with diabetes and mortality due to the associations between higher adiposity and lower lean mass with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) risk. Reduced appendicular muscle mass is associated with malnutrition risk and age-related frailty, and is a risk factor for poor treatment outcomes related to MetS and other clinical conditions (e.g.; cancer). These measures are traditionally assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which can be difficult to access in clinical settings. The Shape Up! Adults trial (SUA) demonstrated the accuracy and precision of 3-dimensional optical imaging (3DO) for body composition as compared to DXA and other criterion measures. Here we assessed whether trunk-to-leg volume estimates derived from 3DO are associated with MetS risk in a similar way as when measured by DXA. We further explored if estimations of appendicular lean mass (ALM) could be made using 3DO to further improve the accessibility of measuring this important frailty and disease risk factor. METHODS SUA recruited participants across sex, age (18-40, 40-60, >60 years), BMI (under, normal, overweight, obese), and race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic [NH] Black, NH White, Hispanic, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander) categories. Each participant had whole-body DXA and 3DO scans, and measures of cardiovascular health. The 3DO measures of trunk and leg volumes were calibrated to DXA to express equivalent trunk-to-leg volume ratios. We expressed each blood measure and overall MetS risk in quartile gradations of trunk-to-leg volume previously defined by National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Finally, we utilized 3DO measures to estimate DXA ALM using ten-fold cross-validation of the entire dataset. RESULTS Participants were 502 (273 female) adults, mean age = 46.0 ± 16.5y, BMI = 27.6 ± 7.1 kg/m2 and a mean DXA trunk-to-leg volume ratio of 1.47 ± 0.22 (females: 1.43 ± 0.23; males: 1.52 ± 0.20). After adjustments for age and sex, each standard deviation increase in trunk-to-leg volume by 3DO was associated with a 3.3 (95% odds ratio [OR] = 2.4-4.2) times greater risk of MetS, with individuals in the highest quartile of trunk-to-leg at 27.4 (95% CI: 9.0-53.1) times greater risk of MetS compared to the lowest quartile. Risks of elevated blood biomarkers as related to high 3DO trunk-to-leg volume ratios were similar to previously published comparisons using DXA trunk-to-leg volume ratios. Estimated ALM by 3DO was correlated to DXA (r2 = 0.96, root mean square error = 1.5 kg) using ten-fold cross-validation. CONCLUSION Using thresholds of trunk-to-leg associated with MetS developed on a sample of US-representative adults, trunk-to-leg ratio by 3DO after adjustments for offsets showed significant associations to blood parameters and MetS risk. 3DO scans provide a precise and accurate estimation of ALM across the range of body sizes included in the study sample. The development of these additional measures improves the clinical utility of 3DO for the assessment of MetS risk as well as the identification of low muscle mass associated with poor cardiometabolic and functional health.

Abstract
AIM This scoping review aims to assess the utility of ultrasound as a prospective tool in measuring body composition and nutritional status in the paediatric population. We provide a comprehensive summary of the existing literature, identify gaps, and propose future research directions. METHODS We conducted a systematic scoping review following the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. This involved screening titles and abstracts of relevant studies, followed by a detailed full-text review and extraction of pertinent data. RESULTS We identified and synthesised 34 articles. The review revealed that while ultrasound has been used to assess body composition and bone properties in children, significant gaps remain in the literature. These include limited studies on ultrasound performance, insufficient attention to relevant sample characteristics, reliance on manual image measurements, and limited sample diversity. CONCLUSION Point-of-care ultrasound shows significant promise for assessing paediatric body composition and nutritional status. To validate and enhance its effectiveness, further research is needed. Future studies should include larger and more diverse patient cohorts and conduct longitudinal investigations to evaluate nutritional interventions. Additionally, developing artificial intelligence (AI) for standardising and automating data interpretation will be crucial in improving the accuracy and efficiency of ultrasound assessments.

Abstract
Introduction Methods of body composition estimation such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), anthropometry, and bioimpedance (BIA) are used for the estimation of skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and lean body mass (LBM). No previous studies have examined whether these methods generate comparable results, or whether they are valid by using DXA as the reference. The aims of the present investigation were: (a) to assess the differences between DXA, anthropometry, and BIA in the estimation of SMM and LBM, taking into consideration the impact of sex and hydration status; and (b) to examine the agreement of anthropometry and BIA as compared to DXA for the estimation of SMM and LBM. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional design was followed with 262 healthy young adults (159 males and 103 females). LBM and SMM were assessed by anthropometry with the formulas from Lee et al. and Kulkarni et al. for LBM; and Kerr (opt a), Kerr (opt b), Lee et al., Poortmans, Matiegka, Martin et al., Drinkwater and Ross, and Heymsfield et al. for SMM; by BIA with the formula reported by the TANITA MC-780-MA software for LBM and SMM; and DXA with the formula reported by the Hologic Horizon software for LBM, and the conversion by Kim et al. for SMM. Results Significant differences were found for both SMM and LBM in kg, and percentages between most methods and formulas for the overall sample (p < 0.001-0.003) and divided by sex (p < 0.001-0.035). Hydration status did not have a significant effect on the differences between methods and formulas (p = 0.058-0.870). Lin's coefficient revealed limited agreement among the majority of formulas and methods (CCC = 0.007-0.880). The Bland-Altman analysis showed significant differences in most methods and formulas, both in the overall sample and divided by sex, when using SMM and LBM with DXA as the reference (p < 0.001-0.030). Conclusion There is a lack of agreement between methods and formulas for assessing SMM and LBM. Sex was found to be a significant factor in this analysis. Furthermore, significant differences were observed between most formulas and methods as compared to DXA, except for the equations to estimate SMM with anthropometry by Poortmans.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Anastomotic leakage is a major concern following total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer, affecting oncological outcomes, morbidity an treatment costs. Body composition has been suggested to influence anastomotic leakage rates. However, literature on how body composition impact anastomotic leakage rates is conflicting. This systematic review aims to evaluate the role of computed tomography derived body composition metrics on anastomotic leakage rates in rectal cancer patients. METHODS Databases PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, web of science, and EMBASE, will be systematically searched for papers from January 2010 onwards. Study selection, data collection and quality assessment will be independently performed by three research fellows. Outcomes described in three or more studies will be included in the meta-analysis. The Q-test and I2 statistic will be used to assess statistical heterogeneity between studies. Publication bias will be examined by visual inspection of funnel plots and quantified by Egger's test. Sensitivity analyses will be conducted to examine the robustness of the meta-analysis. Reporting of the findings will be in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review will synthesize the current evidence and will identify knowledge gaps. Results of the systematic review will aid health care professional in pre-operative decision making and will be distributed through a peer-reviewed publication and presentation of results at international meetings. Abstract
Background and aims Bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition play an important role in maintaining metabolic health and physical functioning. Plant-based diets (PBDs) are known to be lower in protein and calcium, which can impact BMD and body composition. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between various PBDs compared to regular meat diet and whole-body BMD, body composition, and weight status. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with adults (n = 240) aged 30-75 years, who habitually followed dietary patterns: vegan, lacto-vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, semi-vegetarian, or regular meat eater (48 per group). Parameters were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and multivariable regression analyses were used to adjust for lifestyle confounders, socioeconomic factors, and BMI. Results After adjustments, whole-body BMD and body composition were not significantly different between those following PBDs and regular meat diets, except for lacto-ovo vegetarians, who had significantly lower lean mass by -1.46 kg (CI: -2.78, -0.13). Moreover, lacto-ovo vegetarians had a significantly lower T-score by -0.41 SD (CI: -0.81, -0.01) compared to regular meat eaters. Waist circumference was significantly lower in individuals adhering to a PBD compared to a regular meat diet: vegans by -4.67 cm (CI: -8.10, -1.24), lacto-ovo vegetarians by -3.92 cm (CI: -6.60, -1.23), pesco-vegetarians by -3.24 cm (CI: -6.09, -0.39), and semi-vegetarians by -5.18 cm (CI: -7.79, -2.57). There were no significant differences in lean mass (%), fat mass (% and total), android/gynoid measures, body weight, or BMI across dietary patterns. All dietary patterns met the recommended dietary intake for calcium and protein, and 25-hydroxy-vitamin D status was comparable across groups. Conclusions This cross-sectional study found that adhering to a PBD characterized by varying degrees of dairy and meat restriction is not associated with meaningful changes in BMD or body composition, provided that the dietary patterns are planned appropriately with adequate levels of calcium and protein.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Legislation aimed at reducing sugar intake assumes that sweet-liking drives overconsumption. However, evidence that a greater liking for sweet taste is associated with unhealthier body size is mixed and complicated by relatively small samples, an overreliance on body mass index (BMI) and lack of classification using sweet-liking phenotypes. METHODS We first examined body size data in two larger samples with sweet-liking phenotyping: extreme sweet-likers, moderate sweet-likers and sweet-dislikers. Adults (18-34yrs), attended a two-session lab-based experiment involving phenotyping for sweet-liking status and a bioelectrical impedance body composition measurement (Experiment One: N = 200; Experiment Two: N = 314). Secondly, we conducted an individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis: systematic searches across four databases identified 5736 potential articles. Of these, 53 papers met our search criteria: a taste assessment that measured liking using sucrose (>13.7% w/v), which allowed sweet-liking phenotyping and included either BMI, body fat percentage (BF%), fat-free mass (FFM) or waist-circumference. RESULTS A significant effect of sweet-liking phenotype on FFM was found in both Experiment One and Two, with extreme sweet-likers having significantly higher FFM than sweet-dislikers. In Experiment One, sweet-dislikers had a significantly higher BF% than extreme sweet-likers and moderate sweet-likers. However, as these data are from one research group in a young, predominantly westernised population, and the results did not perfectly replicate, we conducted the IPD meta-analyses to further clarify the findings. Robust one-stage IPD meta-analyses of 15 studies controlling for sex revealed no significant differences in BF% (n = 1836) or waist-circumference (n = 706). For BMI (n = 2368), moderate sweet-likers had slightly lower BMI than extreme sweet-likers, who had the highest overall BMI. Most interestingly, for FFM (n = 768), moderate sweet-likers and sweet-dislikers showed significantly lower FFM than extreme sweet-likers. CONCLUSION The higher BMI often seen in sweet-likers may be due to a larger FFM and questions the simple model where sweet liking alone is a risk factor for obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenic obesity may affect the health outcome of people with obesity after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). To assess the impact of sarcopenic obesity (SO) on weight loss outcomes and improvement of quality of life after LSG. MATERIALS AND METHODS This observational study included patients who underwent LSG with SO (99 patients) or without SO (146 patients) from a single center. The primary endpoint was weight loss and disease-specific quality of life in patients with or without SO after the operation. Fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) were calculated based on the L3-level images of preoperative CT scans. SO was diagnosed if FM/FFM ≥ 0.80. RESULTS Operative time and postoperative hospital stay days were longer in the SO group (p < 0.001). After LSG, weight, BMI, and EBMI were significantly lower in the NSO group than in the SO group (all P < 0.05), while %EWL and the number of patients with %EWL ≥ 100% were significantly lower in the SO group (both p < 0.05). The total BAROS scores of patients in the NSO group were higher than those in the SO group (p < 0.05). Additionally, the MA II questionnaire assessment showed a lower percentage of "very good" and "good" outcomes in the SO group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Patients with SO take a slower rate, longer time to reach the ideal weight, and lower quality of life self-ratings than NSO patients after LSG. Thus, preoperative evaluation and tailoring rehabilitation guidance for people with SO should be accounted.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to investigate whether visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and skeletal muscle area (SMA) index are predictive for efficacy and hematological toxicity in ER + HER2-metastatic breast cancer (BC) patients who received CDK 4/6 inhibitors. METHODS This retrospective cohort study analyzed 52 patients who were treated with CDK 4/6 inhibitors between January 2018 and February 2021. The values of VAT, SAT, SMA indices and hematological parameters were noted before the start, at the third and sixth months of this treatment. The skeletal muscle area (SMA) and adipose tissue measurements were calculated at the level of the third lumbar vertebra. A SMA-index value of <40 cm2/m2 was accepted as the threshold value for sarcopenia. RESULTS Patients with sarcopenia had a worse progression-free survival (PFS) compared to patients without sarcopenia (19.6 vs. 9.0 months, p = 0.005). Patients with a high-VAT-index had a better PFS (20.4 vs. 9.3 months, p = 0.033). Only the baseline low-SMA- index (HR: 3.89; 95% CI: 1.35-11.25, p = 0.012) and baseline low-VAT-index (HR: 2.15; 95% CI: 1.02-4.53, p = 0.042) had significantly related to poor PFS in univariate analyses. The low-SMA-index was the only independent factor associated with poor PFS (HR: 3.99; 95% CI: 1.38-11.54, p = 0.011). No relationship was observed between body composition parameters and grade 3-4 hematological toxicity. CONCLUSION The present study supported the significance of sarcopenia and low visceral adipose tissue as potential early indicators of poor PFS in patients treated with CDK 4/6 inhibitors.

Abstract
Fat mass percentage (%FM) is frequently determined by nutritionists and personal trainers with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices. The aims of the present study were: (1) to develop new regression equations using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as the reference method for estimating %FM in a heterogeneous Caucasian population with a foot-to-hand device (BIA-101) and a hand-to-hand device (BIA-TELELAB) and (2) to compare the new equations with the manufacturers' equations. We hypothesized that the new equations would lead to more accurate estimations compared with DXA. A total of 218 healthy Caucasian participants aged 18 to 65 years were divided into a development group and a validation group. The accuracy of the different equations was assessed by mean differences, coefficient of determination, standard error of the estimate (SEE), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), and Bland-Altman plots. The proposed equation for BIA-101 explained 90.0% of the variance in the DXA-derived %FM, with a low random error (SEE = 2.98%), excellent agreement (ICC = 0.94), no fixed bias, and relatively low individual variability (5.86%). For BIA-TELELAB, the proposed equation explained 88.0% of the variance in the DXA-derived %FM, with a low random error (SEE = 3.27%), excellent agreement (ICC = 0.93), no fixed bias, and relatively low individual variability (6.37%). The results obtained for the manufacturers' equations confirm that these equations are not a good option for %FM assessment. As hypothesized, the new regression equations for BIA-101 and BIA-TELELAB devices can accurately estimate %FM in a heterogeneous Caucasian population with a broad age range.

Abstract
PURPOSE Body composition analysis using computed tomography (CT) is proposed as a predictor of cancer mortality. An association between subcutaneous adipose tissue radiodensity (SATr) and cancer-specific mortality was established, while gender effects and equipment bias were estimated. METHODS 7,475 CT studies were selected from 17 cohorts containing CT images of untreated cancer patients who underwent follow-up for a period of 2.1-118.8 months. SATr measures were collected from published data (n = 6,718) or calculated according to CT images using a deep-learning network (n = 757). The association between SATr and mortality was ascertained for each cohort and gender using the p-value from either logistic regression or ROC analysis. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to analyze differences between gender distributions, and automatic segmentation was evaluated using the Dice score and five-point Likert quality scale. Gender effect, scanner bias and changes in the Hounsfield unit (HU) to detect hazards were also estimated. RESULTS Higher SATr was associated with mortality in eight cancer types (p < 0.05). Automatic segmentation produced a score of 0.949 while the quality scale measurement was good to excellent. The extent of gender effect was 5.2 HU while the scanner bias was 10.3 HU. The minimum proposed HU change to detect a patient at risk of death was between 5.6 and 8.3 HU. CONCLUSIONS CT imaging provides valuable assessments of body composition as part of the staging process for several cancer types, saving both time and cost. Gender specific scales and scanner bias adjustments should be carried out to successfully implement SATr measures in clinical practice.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study investigates the impact of body composition on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in adult females, focusing on factors such as maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max). It also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a physically active lifestyle for achieving CRF. Previous research links CRF to protection against metabolic syndrome. OBJECTIVE To investigate the impact of body composition as specified by body mass index (BMI), fat-free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM), and basal metabolic rates (BMRs) on CRF in adult females. MATERIALS AND METHODS Adult females aged 19-24 participated in this prospective cross-sectional experimental study (n=110). The study excluded those with specific health conditions. Anthropometric measurements, bio-impedance analysis, and a Balke treadmill test were conducted to assess VO2 max and, hence, the CRF. Nutrient intake was assessed, and energy requirements were calculated. The data were analyzed using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS, version 21; IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Armonk, NY). The test statistics deployed were mean (± SD), ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, post-hoc Bonferroni test, and regression analysis. RESULTS The study revealed significant differences in anthropometry among BMI categories. Energy intake showed no significant variation. Body mass distribution, BMRs, and vital signs significantly differed among BMI groups. Most participants exhibited poor CRF; a negative correlation between BMI and VO2 max was observed. CONCLUSION Body compositions, particularly BMI and FFM, body fat percentage, and BMR, influence CRF in young adult females. Poor CRF was prevalent among participants, indicating a potential impact on cardiovascular health. The findings underline the importance of addressing lifestyle factors in promoting better cardiorespiratory health among young adult females.

Abstract
PURPOSE Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women with chemotherapy being a common treatment. Toxicities due to chemotherapy can result in dose reduction, delay, and early cessation of treatment, which along with causing distress for individuals during their cancer treatment might also reduce the therapeutic effect. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the role of body composition on chemotherapy toxicities in women with breast cancer. METHODS A systematic search of the literature was completed on electronic databases Pubmed, Embase, CINHAHL, and Cochrane. Studies were included if the direct effect of body composition on chemotherapy toxicities was reported and excluded if body composition could not be isolated. A critical appraisal of the studies included was performed using McMasters University Critical Review Form for Quantitative Studies. RESULTS Eleven studies were included with a total of 2881 female participants. All studies reported significant relationships between body composition and chemotherapy toxicities; however, individual parameters differed between the studies. Adding to the heterogeneity, different thresholds were reported to determine both sarcopenia and myosteatosis, making it difficult to identify a common finding. CONCLUSION This review suggests that body composition may be an important factor in predicting the severity of chemotherapy toxicities during treatment for breast cancer; however, the lack of international consensus as to thresholds in the literature for sarcopenia and myosteatosis may result in bias. The review supports the need for further prospective studies, allowing for more robust, pre-determined data collection, to better understand the implications of body composition on toxicities and benefits of using body composition to individualize chemotherapy dosing. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Toxicities due to chemotherapy can result in treatment being unable to be completed as planned, potentially resulting in poorer survival outcomes. Improved knowledge in this area may give rise to a more reliable way of individualizing chemotherapy dosage to help mitigate this risk.

Abstract
Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is often criticized due to its insufficient accuracy in determining body composition compared to the gold standard methods. In this work, we show that the use of multiple source-detector distances, as well as the simultaneous use of physiological and optical features, can significantly improve the accuracy of determination of fat and lean mass percentage in the human body using NIR spectroscopy. The study performed on the n = 292 cohort revealed the mean absolute errors of 3.5% for fat content and 3.3% for soft lean mass percentage prediction (r = 0.93) using the multifrequency bioimpedance analysis (BIA) as a reference. Hence, NIRS can serve as an independent reliable method for body composition analysis with precision close to that of advanced multifrequency BIA.

Abstract
AIM Candidates of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) may be at nutritional risk due to decreased oral intake, high nutritional requirements and nutrient malabsorption. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between nutritional status and blood biomarkers in candidates of HSCT. METHODS A total of 278 patients aged 18-65 years old were recruited and their baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded. All subjects underwent nutritional status analysis using Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS-2002). Blood biomarkers including C-reactive protein (CRP), Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), hemoglobin, albumin and total protein as well as CRP-albumin ratio (CAR) and Body Mass Index (BMI) were measured and compared between two groups based on Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS-2002) within 24 h of admission in Bone Marrow Transplant ward. RESULTS The results showed that undernourished patients (NRS ≥ 3) had significantly higher inflammatory markers including ESR, CRP and CAR as well as lower BMI and serum albumin and hemoglobin concentrations (P < 0.05); however, no significant association was observed in terms of total protein even after adjusting for confounders (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that BMI combined with biochemical markers are the appropriate parameters for assessment of nutritional status in HSCT candidates. Furthermore, the nutritional status was verified to be significantly associated with systematic inflammation.

Abstract
Introduction Body composition is an important predictor of performance and a key component of health and physical fitness. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to compare soccer referees of the first and second divisions and field assistant referees from Iran and to analyze associations of a body shape index (ABSI), body adiposity index (BAI), abdominal volume index (AVI), body roundness index (BRI), conicity index (ConI), and body mass index (BMI) with body fat percentage (%BF). Methods A total of 270 male soccer referees from the first (n = 124) and second (n = 72) divisions and assistant referees (n = 74) participated in this study. Skinfold thickness (measured at the chest, biceps, triceps, subscapular, abdominal, iliac crest, and front thigh), height, weight, hip circumference, and waist circumference were assessed to evaluate waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), %BF, and also ABSI, BRI, BAI, ConI, and AVI according to the ISAK protocol. Results The main results indicated differences in WHR, WHtR, ABSI, BRI, AVI, ConI, and BF% with the assistant referees presenting higher values (p < 0.05). When considering the backward selection model, there were some associations with %BF in each group, specifically BMI, BAI, and ABSI in the first division; BMI, WHR, and ABSI in the second division; and BMI in the assistant referee group (all p < 0.05). Discussion The present study did not confirm the hypothesis that the first-division referees presented better body composition-related variables than the second division or assistant referees. Instead, it showed that the assistant referees that participated in both divisions showed a tendency to higher values which suggests that the level of division is not a major factor when analyzing body composition.

Abstract
Introduction The body composition determination is carried out through measurement methods that require the use of specialized equipment that is difficult to acquire and manipulate. Therefore, different authors have developed mathematical models for its calculation. The target of this review was to analyze the work carried out on mathematical models of body composition variables from different anthropometric measurements, answering the following questions: what is the corporal variable that the model predicts?, what are the input variables for model development?, how is the patients typification in each model?, what data analysis method has been used?, and how has been the model evaluated? The search was limited to journals found in repositories in the areas of Medicine, Nursing, Biochemistry, Biology, Health, Pharmacology, Immunology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Four hundred and twenty-four articles were found, which were reduced to 30 by applying the systematic literature review process. The analyzed studies are oriented to the prediction of variables related to body fat mass. The evaluation results found for fat-free mass, fat mass and metabolic rate differ according to the comparison technique and the body segments analyzed. The evaluation is mainly based on the intraclass correlation, the Pearson correlation and the coefficient of determination (r2), and they present a good correlation for the population under study.

Abstract
Malnutrition is the most common comorbidity during the continuum of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) and negatively impacts clinical outcomes, response to therapy, quality of life, and costs. The intensive conditioning regimen administered before transplant causes inflammatory damages to the gastrointestinal system, which themselves contribute to trigger graft versus host disease (GvHD) in the allogeneic setting. GvHD and other post-transplant complications such as infections adversely affect food intake and gut absorption of nutrients. Consequently, patients exhibit signs of malnutrition such as weight loss and muscle wasting, thus triggering a "vicious circle" that favours additional complications. Among HSCT centres, there is marked variability in nutritional care, from screening for malnutrition to nutritional intervention. The present paper, elaborated by the Cellular Therapy and Immunobiology Working Party and the Nurses Group of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, aims at defining a roadmap that identifies the main nutritional critical issues in the field of HSCT. This document will be propaedeutic to the development of clinical algorithms to counteract risk factors of malnutrition, based on scientific evidence and shared among HSCT centres, and thus maximize transplant outcomes.

Abstract
Field-of-view (FOV) tissue truncation beyond the lungs is common in routine lung screening computed tomography (CT). This poses limitations for opportunistic CT-based body composition (BC) assessment as key anatomical structures are missing. Traditionally, extending the FOV of CT is considered as a CT reconstruction problem using limited data. However, this approach relies on the projection domain data which might not be available in application. In this work, we formulate the problem from the semantic image extension perspective which only requires image data as inputs. The proposed two-stage method identifies a new FOV border based on the estimated extent of the complete body and imputes missing tissues in the truncated region. The training samples are simulated using CT slices with complete body in FOV, making the model development self-supervised. We evaluate the validity of the proposed method in automatic BC assessment using lung screening CT with limited FOV. The proposed method effectively restores the missing tissues and reduces BC assessment error introduced by FOV tissue truncation. In the BC assessment for large-scale lung screening CT datasets, this correction improves both the intra-subject consistency and the correlation with anthropometric approximations. Abstract
The correct assessment of body composition is essential for an accurate diagnostic evaluation of nutritional status. The body mass index (BMI) is the most widely adopted indicator for evaluating undernutrition, overweight, and obesity, but it is unsuitable for differentiating changes in body composition. In recent times, bioelectrical impedance analyses (BIA) have been proven as a more accurate procedure for the assessment of body composition. Furthermore, the efficiency of bioelectrical impedance vector analyses, as an indicator of nutritional status and hydration, has been demonstrated. By applying a bioimpedance analysis, it is possible to detect fat mass (FM), fat free mass (FFM), phase angle, and body cell mass (BCM). It is important to point out that phase angle and BCM are strongly associated with health status. The aim of this research was to examine body composition and the association between the phase angle and BCM in 87 subjects (14 males and 73 females), aged between 23 and 54 years, with BMIs ranging from 17.0 to 32.0 kg/m2, according to sex. The BMI results revealed that the majority of the assessed subjects were within the normal range and had a normal percentage of FM. Our data indicate that a direct relation exists between phase angle and cellular health and that these values increase almost linearly. Consequently, a high phase angle may be related to increased BCM values.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to identify the cutoff values for phase angle (PA) and standard phase angle (SPA) parameters, as determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), for predicting malnutrition and investigating their association with overall survival in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients undergoing radiotherapy. METHODS In this study, nutritional assessment and follow-up of HNC patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) between November 2017 and September 2022 were assessed. Nutritional assessment, body composition (BC), and PA results obtained from BIA (Tanita MC-980) were retrospectively evaluated. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) was used for statistical analysis. The results were evaluated at a confidence interval of 95% and a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS A total of 53 patients, including 37 (70%) men and 16 (30%) women, with a median age of 60 (23-87 years) were included. The median follow-up time was 51 (range 24-59) months. The mean PA of the patients was calculated as 4.99° (±0.92, 95% CI: 4.74-5.25). The PA of patients with malnutrition (4.66° ± 0.87) was lower than that of well-nourished patients (5.71° ± 0.56) (p < 0.001). As a result of the ROC analysis based on this finding, the ideal PA cut-off point for determining the presence of malnutrition was found to be 5.65, with a sensitivity of 85%, specificity of 79%, accuracy of 83%, and a model discrimination power of excellent level (AUC: 85%, p < 0.001). The median overall survival time of the patients was calculated as 51 months (24-59 months). The mortality rate during the follow-up period was 13%, while the 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival rates of the patients were 96.1%, 89.3%, and 86.8%, respectively. Patients with SPA values less than -1.65 had a 5-year overall survival rate of 77.4%, while those with SPA values greater than or equal to -1.65 had a 5-year overall survival rate of 100% (p = 0.030) CONCLUSION: Our study recommends using PA and SPA as standard criteria for detecting malnutrition in HNC patients undergoing RT, with cut-off points of 5.65 and -1.65 respectively, to prevent treatment interruptions and improve outcomes. Further research is needed to validate the SPA cut-off value and its relationship with clinical outcomes, as SPA may be a more effective predictor of malnutrition and overall survival than PA alone.

Abstract
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has proven to be particularly useful due to its inexpensive and rapid assessment of total body water and body density. However, recent fluid intake may confound BIA results since equilibration of fluid between intra- and extracellular spaces may take several hours and furthermore, ingested fluids may not be fully absorbed. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of different fluid compositions on the BIA. A total of eighteen healthy individuals (10 females, mean ± SD age of 23.1 ± 1.8 years) performed a baseline measurement of body composition before they consumed isotonic 0.9% sodium-chloride (ISO), 5% glucose (GLU) or Ringer (RIN) solutions. During the visit of the control arm (CON), no fluid was consumed. Further impedance analyses were conducted every 10 min after the fluid consumption for 120 min. We found statistically significant interactions between the effects of solution ingestion and time for intra- (ICW, p < 0.01) and extracellular water (ECW, p < 0.0001), skeletal muscle mass (SMM, p < 0.001) and body fat mass (FM, p < 0.01), respectively. Simple main effects analysis showed that time had a statistically significant effect on changes in ICW (p < 0.01), ECW (p < 0.01), SMM (p < 0.01) and FM (p < 0.01), while fluid intake did not have a significant effect. Our results highlight the importance of a standardized pre-measurement nutrition, with particular attention to hydration status when using a BIA for the evaluation of body composition.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with body composition changes, which are associated with clinical prognosis, response to therapy, and quality of life in IBD patients. Therefore, it is critical to review the body composition distribution in IBD, summarize the potential factors affecting body composition distribution, and take steps to improve the body composition distribution of IBD patients as early as possible. In the current review, we searched PubMed via keywords 'inflammatory bowel disease', or 'IBD', or 'Crohn's disease', or 'CD', or 'ulcerative colitis', or 'UC', and 'body composition'. Malnutrition and sarcopenia are common in IBD patients and are associated with the clinical course, prognosis, and need for surgery. Disease activity, reduced nutrition intake, vitamin D deficiency, and intestinal dysbiosis are factors contributing to changed body composition. Early use of biological agents to induce remission is critical to improving body composition distribution in IBD patients, supplementation of vitamin D is also important, and moderate physical activity is recommended in IBD patients with clinical remission.

Abstract
In lung cancer screening, estimation of future lung cancer risk is usually guided by demographics and smoking status. The role of constitutional profiles of human body, a.k.a. body habitus, is increasingly understood to be important, but has not been integrated into risk models. Chest low dose computed tomography (LDCT) is the standard imaging study in lung cancer screening, with the capability to discriminate differences in body composition and organ arrangement in the thorax. We hypothesize that the primary phenotypes identified using lung screening chest LDCT can form a representation of body habitus and add predictive power for lung cancer risk stratification. In this pilot study, we evaluated the feasibility of body habitus image-based phenotyping on a large lung screening LDCT dataset. A thoracic imaging manifold was estimated based on an intensity-based pairwise (dis)similarity metric for pairs of spatial normalized chest LDCT images. We applied the hierarchical clustering method on this manifold to identify the primary phenotypes. Body habitus features of each identified phenotype were evaluated and associated with future lung cancer risk using time-to-event analysis. We evaluated the method on the baseline LDCT scans of 1,200 male subjects sampled from National Lung Screening Trial. Five primary phenotypes were identified, which were associated with highly distinguishable clinical and body habitus features. Time-to-event analysis against future lung cancer incidences showed two of the five identified phenotypes were associated with elevated future lung cancer risks (HR=1.61, 95% CI = [1.08, 2.38], p=0.019; HR=1.67, 95% CI = [0.98, 2.86], p=0.057). These results indicated that it is feasible to capture the body habitus by image-base phenotyping using lung screening LDCT and the learned body habitus representation can potentially add value for future lung cancer risk stratification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The evaluation of body composition is an essential parameter for preventing obesity and sarcopenic obesity, which are prognostic factors in breast cancer. This study aims to validate the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) of women who are breast cancer survivors by using the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurement method. METHODS This validation study included 104 women without metastasis between 32 and 72 years old (mean 47.03 ± 8.59) whose treatment was completed 6 months prior. Body composition analysis was performed sequentially using both measurements and when participants were hungry. RESULTS Meaningful differences were found in fat-free mass (FFM) (BIA: 46.57 ± 5.54 kg; DXA: 41.06 ± 5.11 kg), body fat percentage (%BF) (BIA: 34.28% ± 6.24%; DXA: 43.91% ± 5.58%), body fat mass (FM) (BIA: 25.37 ± 8.84 kg; DXA: 31.24 ± 9.09 kg), and lean soft tissue mass (LSTM) (BIA: 4.42 ± 5.66 kg; DXA: 38.75 ± 4.98 kg) (P < 0.001). Powerful associations for body FM and strong associations for other parameters were seen. A constant and/or proportional error was found between the two devices within the direction of strong and solid components. Compared with DXA, the BIA measurement gives a lower estimate of %BF and FM and a higher estimate of LSTM and FFM. CONCLUSIONS By the mathematical relationship between the two measurement methods, it seems possible to adapt the body composition parameters obtained from BIA of patients with breast cancer to DXA results. In the future, there will be a need to evaluate these two devices with more extensive studies.

Abstract
The primary function of the small intestine (SI) is to absorb nutrients to maintain whole-body energy homeostasis. Enterocytes are the major epithelial cell type facilitating nutrient sensing and uptake. However, the molecular regulators governing enterocytes have remained undefined. Here, we identify c-Maf as an enterocyte-specific transcription factor within the SI epithelium. c-Maf expression was determined by opposing Noggin/BMP signals and overlapped with the zonated enrichment of nutrient transporters in the mid-villus region. Functionally, enterocytes required c-Maf to appropriately differentiate along the villus axis. Specifically, gene programs controlling carbohydrate and protein absorption were c-Maf-dependent. Consequently, epithelial cell-specific c-Maf deletion resulted in impaired enterocyte maturation and nutrient uptake, including defects in the adaptation to different nutrient availability. Concomitantly, intraepithelial lymphocytes were less abundant, while commensal epithelial cell-attaching SFB overgrew in a c-Maf-deficient environment, highlighting the close interdependence between the intestinal epithelium, immune system, and microbiota. Collectively, our data identified c-Maf as a key regulator of SI enterocyte differentiation and function, essential for nutrient, immune, and microbial homeostasis.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to evaluate the stratification of young women based on the assessment of body composition according to several currently recommended anthropometric indices and parameters, as well as the presence of obesity, sarcopenic obesity and the risk of premature death. Three hundred and three young Caucasian women aged 18-25 years were included in the cross-sectional observational study. For the purposes of the study, we used the bioelectrical impedance method and applied the obtained data to calculate indices defining obesity, sarcopenic obesity and premature mortality risk (ABSI z-score). We found significant differences between indicators of total and abdominal obesity when determining the rate of risk of premature death and diagnosis of obesity. Our results also suggest that FMI and FM/FFM indices correlate excellently with fat mass and visceral adipose tissue, better than BMI. Even in the case of abdominal obesity, FMI appears to correlate relatively strongly, more so than BMI. The results of the study support the opinion that in the assessment of body composition and health status, the presence of obesity (sarcopenic obesity) and the risk of premature death, anthropometric parameters and indices focusing not only on body weight (BMI, ABSI), but also on the proportionality and distribution of fat (WC, WHR, WHtR, VFA) and muscle tissue (FFMI, SMMI, FM/FFM ratio) should be used.

Relationship of 24-Hour Movement Behaviors with Weight Status and Body Composition in Chinese Primary School Children: A Cross-Sectional Study. Abstract
24 h movement behaviors, specifically physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior, and sleep, play a crucial role in the prevention and intervention of childhood obesity. This study aimed to examine the association of 24 h movement behaviors with weight status and body composition among Chinese primary school children. Using a random stratified sampling, 978 eligible participants (9.1 ± 1.4 years, 53.2% boys) were recruited from 1 May to 15 July 2021. Demographics included children's age, gender, grade, parents' education level, and household income. Movement behaviors were measured by validated self-reported scales. Weight status and body composition (percent of body fat, PBF; fat-free mass, FFM; skeletal muscle mass, SMM) were measured objectively. Results indicated that participants who were younger, boys, and at lower grade showed higher guidelines adherence. PA was inversely associated with PBF, while screen time (ST) was positively associated with overweight/obesity risk and FFM. Sleep showed no association with any health indicators. Meeting the behavioral guidelines was associated with better weight status and lower PBF, yet not with FFM and SMM. Interventions to improve the Children's weight status and PBF should involve enhancing their overall movement behaviors and considering their demographic differences. More research on examining the association of movement guidelines adherence with body composition indicators is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes in oestradiol and progesterone hormones and associated fluid retention during the menstrual cycle phases might affect body composition (BC) in women. AIM The main objectives of this study were to determine the changes in whole and segmental BC by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and bioelectrical impedance (BIA) during the mid-follicular (MFP) and mid-luteal (MLP) phases. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Thirty recreationally active young women participated in this study. BC was measured by DXA and BIA during MFP and MLP. A mixed linear model for repeated measures analysis was used to determine the differences between the two phases. RESULTS Body mass was higher during MLP than MFP, while total body water, total and segmental fat mass and fat percentages measured by both BIA and DXA were similar during the two phases. DXA-derived fat-free mass and soft lean mass in the android region were higher during MLP than MFP. Large variability in individual responses was evident. CONCLUSION On average, whole and segmental BC variables do not change significantly between MFP and MLP. However, given the large variability among the individual responses, it is suggested to perform repeated BC measurements during the same phase of the menstrual cycle.

Identification of sarcopenic obesity in adults undergoing orthopaedic surgery: Relationship between “a body shape index” (ABSI) and fat-free mass. A cross -sectional study. Abstract
Background Sarcopenic obesity is a condition characterised by the coexistence of low muscle mass and function (sarcopenia) and excessive fat mass (obesity). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of this condition in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery by gender and type of orthopaedic surgery. In addition, this study investigated the suitability of a waist circumference-based anthropometric measure, body shape index (ABSI), for predicting sarcopenic obesity and the predictive power of ABSI for fat-free mass index (FFMI), a surrogate marker of lean body mass. Methods and findings A cross-sectional study of overweight and obese orthopaedic patients undergoing knee or hip and spine surgery was conducted between October 2019 and March 2020 in Orthopaedic Hospital Valdoltra, Slovenia. General anthropometric parameters body mass index (BMI) and ABSI = (WC/(BMI2/3x height½) as well as body composition data (fat mass FM, fat-free mass FFM, FFMI, and the ratio FM/FFM as an index of sarcopenic obesity) were determined in 120 women (aged 66.5 ± 9.6 years) and 89 men (aged 65.5 ± 7.8 years) with overweight (25 kg/m2 ≤ BMI < 30 kg/m2) and obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Sarcopenic obesity phenotypes based on FM/FFM ratio > 0.80 was present in 15.3% of patients, mainly in female patients undergoing knee surgery. ABSI was significantly associated with age in all women and obese men and with waist circumference (WC) in all patients. ABSI did not correlate with BMI in women and men; however, multiple linear regression analysis showed that BMI independently predicted FFMI (R = 0.83 and 0.70, respectively, p < 0.001) in women and men (β-coefficients: 0.801 and 0.686, respectively) and ABSI in women only (β-coefficient: -0.104). Women with a lower ABSI had a significantly higher FFMI than the group with a higher ABSI. Conclusions Sarcopenic obesity was most prevalent in obese women scheduled for knee surgery. In addition, ABSI, independently predicted FFMI in women and represents a significant predictor of sarcopenic obesity.

Abstract
The effects of radiation and chemotherapy on the musculoskeletal (MSK) system are diverse, and interpretation may be challenging. The different lines of treatment have effects on diseased and normal marrow, and they may lead to complications that must be differentiated from recurrence or progression. This review analyzes the changes induced by radiotherapy and chemotherapy in the MSK system in the adult and pediatric population, and the expected associated imaging findings. Treatments are often combined, so the effects may blend. Awareness of the spectrum of changes, complications, and their imaging appearances is paramount for the correct diagnosis. The assessment of body composition during and after treatment allows potential interventions to implement long-term outcomes and personalize treatments. Imaging techniques such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging provide information on body composition that can be incorporated into clinical pathways. We also address future perspectives in posttreatment assessment.

Abstract
People with obesity have been found to have lower zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) circulatory levels and abnormal thyroid function than people with normal weight. Studies about the effects of Zn and Se supplementation on body composition and thyroid function of overweight-obese people showed inconsistent results. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was conducted to determine the effects of Ζn supplementation, Se supplementation, and their combination on body composition and thyroid function of individuals with overweight or obesity. Databases of PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane, were searched from inception to February 27, 2022, to identify relevant articles. For the assessment of the methodological quality of the studies, the Jadad scale was used. After screening the articles, thirteen studies were finally included and were analyzed using the strength of the evidence approach. Regarding the effectiveness of Zn supplementation on body composition, moderate evidence was found, while the effects of Se were found to be mixed. Zn supplementation was found to affect the thyroid function of people with overweight or obesity by increasing their free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels. However, this result is based only on one study among hypothyroid patients. At this point, the effectiveness of Zn, Se, and their combination, on the body composition and the thyroid function of people with overweight or obesity cannot safely be determined because of the controversial results, small number, and the limitations of the identified studies. The results of this systematic review must be interpreted with caution due to the limitations detected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To develop an automatic segmentation algorithm using a deep neural network with transfer learning applicable to whole-body PET-CT images in children. METHODS For model development, we utilized transfer learning with a pre-trained model based on adult patients. We used CT images of 31 pediatric patients under 19 years of age (mean age, 9.6 years) who underwent PET-CT from institution #1 for transfer learning. Two radiologists manually labeled the skin, bone, muscle, abdominal visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, internal organs, and central nervous system in each CT slice and used these as references. For external validation, we collected 14 pediatric PET/CT scans from institution #2 (mean age, 9.1 years). The Dice similarity coefficients (DSCs), sensitivities, and precision were compared between the algorithms before and after transfer learning. In addition, we evaluated segmentation performance according to sex, age (≤ 8 vs. > 8 years), and body mass index (BMI, ≤ 20 vs. > 20 kg/m2). RESULTS The algorithm after transfer learning showed better performance than the algorithm before transfer learning for all body compositions (p < 0.001). The average DSC, sensitivity, and precision of each algorithm before and after transfer learning were 98.23% and 99.28%, 98.16% and 99.28%, and 98.29% and 99.28%, respectively. The segmentation performance of the algorithm was generally not affected by age, sex, or BMI, except for precision in the body muscle compartment. CONCLUSION The developed model with transfer learning enabled accurate and fully automated segmentation of multiple tissues on whole-body CT scans in children. KEY POINTS • We utilized transfer learning with a pre-trained segmentation algorithm for adult to develop an algorithm for automated segmentation of pediatric whole-body CT. • This algorithm showed excellent performance and was not affected by sex, age, or body mass index, except for precision in body muscle.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is defined as the loss of skeletal muscle mass and muscle function. It is common in patients with malignancies and often associated with adverse clinical outcomes. The presence of sarcopenia in patients with cancer is determined by body composition, and recently, radiologic technology for the accurate estimation of body composition is under development. Artificial intelligence- (AI-) assisted image measurement facilitates the detection of sarcopenia in clinical practice. Sarcopenia is a prognostic factor for patients with cancer, and confirming its presence helps to recognize those patients at the greatest risk, which provides a guide for designing individualized cancer treatments. In this review, we examine the recent literature (2017-2021) on AI-assisted image assessment of body composition and sarcopenia, seeking to synthesize current information on the mechanism and the importance of sarcopenia, its diagnostic image markers, and the interventions for sarcopenia in the medical care of patients with cancer. We concluded that AI-assisted image analysis is a reliable automatic technique for segmentation of abdominal adipose tissue. It has the potential to improve diagnosis of sarcopenia and facilitates identification of oncology patients at the greatest risk, supporting individualized prevention planning and treatment evaluation. The capability of AI approaches in analyzing series of big data and extracting features beyond manual skills would no doubt progressively provide impactful information and greatly refine the standard for assessing sarcopenia risk in patients with cancer.

Abstract
Background The primary objective of this study was to compare measurements of skeletal muscle index (SMI), visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) at the level of L3, on subjects who underwent computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations within a three-month period. The secondary objective was to compare the automatic and semi-automatic quantifications of the same values for CT images. Methods Among subjects who underwent CT and MRI at our Institution between 2011 and 2020, exclusion criteria were: presence of extensive artifacts; images not including the whole waist circumference; CT acquired with low-dose technique and lack of non-contrast images. A set of three axial images (CT, MRI T1-weighted and T2-weighted) were used to extract the following measurements with semi-automatic segmentations: SMI [calculated normalizing skeletal muscle area (SMA) by the square height], SAT, VAT. For the CT images only, the same values were also calculated by using automatic segmentation. Statistical analysis was performed comparing quantitative MRI and CT measurements by Pearson correlation analysis and by Bland-Altman agreement analysis. Results A total of 123 patients were included. By performing linear regression analysis, CT and MRI measurements of SMI showed a high correlation (r2=0.81 for T1, r2=0.89 for T2), with a mean logarithmic difference between CT and MRI quantitative values of 0.041 for T1-weighted and 0.072 for T2-weighted images. CT and MRI measurements of SAT showed high correlation (r2=0.81 for T1; r2=0.81 for T2), with a mean logarithmic difference between CT and MRI values of 0.0174 for T1-weighted and 0.201 for T2-weighted images. CT and MRI measurements of VAT showed high correlation (r2=0.94 for T1; r2=0.93 for T2), with a mean logarithmic difference of 0.040 for T1-weighted and -0.084 for T2-weighted images. The comparison of values extracted by semi-automatic and automatic segmentations were highly correlated. Conclusions Quantification of body composition values at MRI from T1-weighted and T2-weighted images was highly correlated to same values at CT, therefore quantitative values of body composition among patients who underwent either one of the examinations may be compared. CT body composition values extracted by semi-automatic and automatic segmentations showed high correlation.

Abstract
Certain body composition phenotypes, like sarcopenia, are well established as predictive markers for post-surgery complications and overall survival of lung cancer patients. However, their association with incidental lung cancer risk in the screening population is still unclear. We study the feasibility of body composition analysis using chest low dose computed tomography (LDCT). A two-stage fully automatic pipeline is developed to assess the cross-sectional area of body composition components including subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), muscle, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and bone on T5, T8 and T10 vertebral levels. The pipeline is developed using 61 cases of the VerSe'20 dataset, 40 annotated cases of NLST, and 851 inhouse screening cases. On a test cohort consisting of 30 cases from the inhouse screening cohort (age 55 - 73, 50% female) and 42 cases of NLST (age 55 - 75, 59.5% female), the pipeline achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 7.25 mm (95% CI: [6.61, 7.85]) for the vertebral level identification and mean Dice similarity score (DSC) 0.99 ± 0.02, 0.96 ± 0.03, and 0.95 ± 0.04 for SAT, muscle, and VAT, respectively for body composition segmentation. The pipeline is generalized to the CT arm of the NLST dataset (25,205 subjects, 40.8% female, 1,056 lung cancer incidences). Time-to-event analysis for lung cancer incidence indicates inverse association between measured muscle cross-sectional area and incidental lung cancer risks (p < 0.001 female, p < 0.001 male). In conclusion, automatic body composition analysis using routine lung screening LDCT is feasible.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the feasibility of a chest CT-based body composition analysis in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and to investigate the respective contribution of lung and muscle CT quantitative analyses to the prognosis of IPF. METHOD A total of 71 IPF patients were recruited at diagnosis. All patients underwent a standard chest CT-scan and a bioelectrical impedance analysis considered as reference standard for estimating malnutrition through the use of the fat-free mass index (FFMI). The skeletal muscle index (SMI) was measured on chest-CT at the level of the first lumbar vertebra by two radiologists. Lung fibrosis extent was quantified by three radiologists in consensus. The extent of emphysema, the pulmonary artery to aorta (PA/AO) diameter ratio and lymph node enlargement were also reported. Mortality and hospitalization over a 14-month follow-up were recorded. RESULTS A low FFMI defining malnutrition was identified in 26.8% of patients. SMI was significantly lower in these patients (p<0.001) and was correlated with FFMI (r=0.637, p<0.001). Interobserver agreement of SMI measurement was very good (ICC=0.91). For diagnosing malnutrition, SMI showed a 0.79 sensitivity, a 0.69 specificity, a 0.48 PPV and a 0.90 NPV. In univariate analysis, fibrosis extent was significantly associated with death, while SMI did not reach significance. In multivariate analysis, fibrosis extent and PA/AO ratio were independently associated with hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS SMI measured on chest CT could be a reliable tool to exclude malnutrition in IPF. A quantitative analysis of both fibrosis and skeletal muscle may allow holistic management of IPF patients.

Abstract
The determinants of body composition are likely to vary geographically due to the diversity of genetic and environmental factors between populations. Age-related trends in body composition in a population help understanding the health issues that are linked with different body compartments. In general, such studies are scarce in the South Asian region and this cross-sectional study examined the age-related trends in body composition in a selected group of healthy women aged 20-80 years in Sri Lanka. The study included randomly selected 784 healthy women aged 20-80 years from the Southern province, Sri Lanka. Women were divided into five age groups: 20-29 years (n = 79), 30-39 years (n = 144), 40-49 years (n = 185), 50-59 years (n = 281), and ≥60 years (n = 85). Total body bone mineral density (TBBMD, g/cm2), total body bone mineral content (TBBMC, g), total body fat mass (TBFM, kg), and total body lean mass (TBLM, kg) were measured with central-type dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Multivariate analysis of variance with Bonferroni post hoc test was performed. The age-related trends of TBBMD and TBBMC were similar with a peak in 40-49-year age group. Between 50 and 59 and ≥60 age categories, TBBMD and TBBMC showed a rapid decline: 16% and 23%, respectively. The rate of TBBMD decline was 0.008 g/cm2 per year after 50 years. TBFM increased by 14% between age categories 20-29 and 40-49 years and remained unchanged after 49 years. TBLM increased by 15% between age groups 20-29 and 40-49 years and then decreased by 13% between age categories 50-59 and ≥60 years. Of the 13% decrease in TBLM after 50 years, 9% loss occurred after 59 years. The trends observed help to understand the occurrence of diseases linked with body composition.

Abstract
Background While it is well established that perioperative use of oral nutrition supplement (ONS) improves nutrition status among severely malnourished surgical cancer patients, the evidence requires further substantiation for non-severely malnourished patients with cancer. This protocol paper presents the rationale and design of a randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of preoperative as well as an extended 90-day postoperative use of ONS on nutritional and clinical outcomes among patients undergoing elective surgery for breast and colorectal cancer. Methods Patients with primary breast and colorectal cancer undergoing elective surgery are recruited from two tertiary hospitals. Eligible patients are assigned into one of the three intervention arms: (i) Group SS will receive ONS in addition to their normal diet up to 14 days preoperatively and postoperatively up to discharge; (ii) Group SS-E will receive ONS in addition to their normal diet up to 14 days preoperatively, postoperatively up to discharge and for an extended 90 days after discharge; and (iii) Group DS will receive ONS in addition to their normal diet postoperatively up to discharge from the hospital. The ONS is a standard formula fortified with lactium to aid in sleep for recovery. The primary endpoints include changes in weight, body mass index (BMI), serum albumin and prealbumin levels, while secondary endpoints are body composition (muscle and fat mass), muscle strength (handgrip strength), energy and protein intake, sleep quality, haemoglobin, inflammatory markers (transferrin, high sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin-6), stress marker (saliva cortisol), length of hospital stay and postoperative complication rate. Discussion This trial is expected to provide evidence on whether perioperative supplementation in breast and colorectal cancer patients presenting with high BMI and not severely malnourished but undergoing the stress of surgery would be beneficial in terms of nutritional and clinical outcomes. Abstract
Body composition is a key component for maintaining good general health and longevity. It can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, environment, and lifestyle choices. The assessment of body composition is an essential tool for nutrition specialists to effectively evaluate nutritional status and monitor progression during dietary interventions. As humans age, there is a natural increase in fat mass coupled with a gradual decline in lean mass, specifically in bone and muscle mass. Individuals with a high body fat percentage are at a greater risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, several types of cancer, and early mortality. Significant decreases in bone mineral density signify osteopenia and osteoporosis, while reductions in skeletal muscle mass increase the risk of developing sarcopenia. Moreover, undernutrition exacerbates the effects of many medical conditions and is important to address. Though weight tracking and calculation of BMI are used commonly by clinicians and dietitians, these measures do not provide insight on the relative contributions of fat mass and fat-free mass or the changes in these compartments that may reflect disease risk. Therefore, it is important that healthcare professionals have a critical understanding of body composition assessment and the strengths and limitations of the methods available.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Several studies have reported changes in body composition in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Our study showed that body composition measurements obtained by absorptiometry were highly reproducible in patients suffering from these diseases. This study justifies the use of absorptiometry measurements in longitudinal studies in this population. PURPOSE Our study aimed to assess the reproducibility of total and regional body composition in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and to compare them to healthy subjects. METHODS The study enrolled 80 subjects including 32 healthy subjects, 31 RA patients, and 17 AS patients. Each subject had two scans in one day under the same standard conditions and none ate nor drunk before being repositioned on the table. The reproducibility was assessed through the coefficient of variation (CV), the least significant change (LSC), the intraclass correlation (ICC), and the smallest significant difference (SDD). RESULTS Total body composition measurements obtained by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were highly reproducible, and there was no statistically significant difference between reproducibility in healthy subjects, patients with RA, and patients with AS. For total body fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), and bone mineral content (BMC) in the total population, CV values were 1.71%, 1.25%, and 1.74%, respectively; ICC values were 0.998, 0.996, and 0.993, respectively; LSC values were 4.88%, 3.7%, and 5.2%, respectively; and SDD values were ± 1.23 Kg, ± 1.47 Kg, and ± 126.0 g, respectively. For regional body FM, LM, and BMC in the total population, CV values in the arms were 8.46%, 4.17%, and 3.79%, respectively; in the legs 6.24%, 3.59%, and 2.04%, respectively, and in the trunk 5.02%, 2.92%, and 5.24%, respectively. CONCLUSION Total body tissue mass, FM percentage, FM, LM, and BMC measurements obtained by DXA are highly reproducible in RA and AS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Excess adipose tissue may affect colorectal cancer (CRC) patients' disease progression and treatment. In contrast to the commonly used anthropometric measurements, Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and Computed Tomography (CT) can differentiate adipose tissues. However, these modalities are rarely used in the clinic despite providing high-quality estimates. This study aimed to compare DXA's measurement of abdominal visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and fat mass (FM) against a corresponding volume by CT in a CRC population. Secondly, we aimed to identify the best single lumbar CT slice for abdominal VAT. Lastly, we investigated the associations between anthropometric measurements and VAT estimated by DXA and CT. METHODS Non-metastatic CRC patients between 50-80 years from the ongoing randomized controlled trial CRC-NORDIET were included in this cross-sectional study. Corresponding abdominal volumes were acquired by Lunar iDXA and from clinically acquired CT examinations. Also, single CT slices at L2-, L3-and L4-level were obtained. Agreement between the methods was investigated using univariate linear regression and Bland-Altman plots. RESULTS Sixty-six CRC patients were included. Abdominal volumetric VAT and FM measured by DXA explained up to 91% and 96% of the variance in VAT and FM by CT, respectively. Bland-Altman plots demonstrated an overestimation of VAT by DXA compared to CT (mean difference of 76 cm3) concurrent with an underestimation of FM (mean difference of -319 cm3). A higher overestimation of VAT (p = 0.015) and underestimation of FM (p = 0.036) were observed in obese relative to normal weight subjects. VAT in a single slice at L3-level showed the highest explained variance against CT volume (R2 = 0.97), but a combination of three slices (L2, L3, L4) explained a significantly higher variance than L3 alone (R2 = 0.98, p < 0.006). The anthropometric measurements explained between 31-65% of the variance of volumetric VAT measured by DXA and CT. CONCLUSIONS DXA and the combined use of three CT slices (L2-L4) are valid to predict abdominal volumetric VAT and FM in CRC patients when using volumetric CT as a reference method. Due to the poor performance of anthropometric measurements we recommend exploring the added value of advanced body composition by DXA and CT integrated into CRC care.

Abstract
The incidence of pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection is high in patients with underlying lung disease such as bronchiectasis. Although previous studies have reported many risk factors contributing to the development of NTM-lung disease (LD), only a few reports on the relationship of the characteristics of patients, such as body mass index (BMI), skeletal mass, and fat mass, with NTM-LD have been published. We aimed to investigate the association between these parameters and NTM-LD in patients with bronchiectasis.A monocentric retrospective study in a university hospital was conducted over 4 years (2013-2016). Parameters including BMI, skeletal mass, and fat mass were measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis in noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis patients. Patients were grouped by the presence or absence of NTM-LD, and the differences in BMI, skeletal mass, and fat mass between the 2 groups were compared. In the NTM-LD group, the progression of disease was also followed.Two hundred forty-five patients with bronchiectasis were enrolled in the study. One hundred six subjects (48%) had NTM-LD. These patients with NTM-LD were predominantly female, and had a significantly lower body weight (58.20 ± 8.84 vs 54.16 ± 8.99, P < .001), BMI (22.67 ± 3.04 vs 21.20 ± 2.59 kg/m2, P < .001), fat mass (16.19 ± 6.60 vs 14.23 ± 5.79, P = .013), and fat mass index (FMI; 6.79 ± 2.70 vs 5.57 ± 2.27 kg/m2, P < .001). Multivariate regression analysis showed that both female sex and lower FMI but not skeletal muscle index were independent risk factors for NTM-LD after adjusting for age, bronchiectasis severity index, and BMI (odds ratio 3.86 (1.99-7.78); 0.72 (0.63-0.82), P < .001, respectively).Our results suggest that lower FMI may contribute to susceptibility to NTM infection in patients with bronchiectasis, independent of age or its severity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION No equations to predict the body composition of athletes from Medellín expected to have high performance have been constructed and, thus, decisions regarding their training and nutrition plans lack support. OBJECTIVE To calculate the concurrent validity of five prediction equations for fat percentage in a group of athletes from Medellín, Colombia, expected to yield high performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis to validate diagnostic tests using secondary-source data of athletes under the age of 18 who were part of the "Medellín Team". The gold standard was dual-energy X-ray densitometry (DEXA). We analyzed the Slaughter, Durnin and Rahaman, Lohman, and Johnston prediction equations, as well as the five-component model. We used the intraclass correlation coefficient to assess the consistency of the methods and the Bland-Altman plot to calculate the average bias and agreement limits of each of the equations. RESULTS We included 101 athletes (50,5 % of them women). The median age was 14,8 years (IR: 13,0 - 16,0). The concurrent validity was "good/excellent" for the Johnston and the Durnin and Rahaman equations and the five-components model. The Lohman equation overestimated the fat percentage in 12,7 points. All of the equations showed broad agreement limits. CONCLUSIONS The Durnin and Rahaman and the Johnston equations, as well as the fivecomponent model, can be used to predict the FP in the study population as they showed a "good/excellent" concurrent validity and a low average bias. The equations analyzed have low accuracy, which hinders their use to diagnose the individual fat percentage within this population.

Abstract
Intrauterine life is a critical period for the development of body fat and metabolic risk. This study investigated associations between birth weight and total and truncal body fat in adults. To do so, we analyzed data on 10,011 adults participating in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) who self-reported birth weight as < 2.5kg, 2.5-4.0kg, or > 4.0kg at baseline (2008-2010) and underwent bioimpedance in the next follow-up visit (2012-2014). Greater mean total and truncal fat mass were seen in those with high birth weight compared with adequate birth weight (p < 0.001) in both sexes (total fat: 25.2 vs. 23.1kg in men and 31.4 vs. 27.7kg in women, and truncal fat: 13.5 vs. 12.4kg in men and 15.9 vs. 14.2kg in women). U-shaped patterns were observed in restricted cubic-spline analyses in the subset of 5,212 individuals reporting exact birth weights, although statistically significant only for those with high birth weight. In the whole sample, in comparing high to adequate birth weight, the latter predicted having a large (> 85 percentile) total and truncal fat mass, respectively: OR = 1.76, 95%CI: 1.37-2.25 (men) and OR = 1.86, 95%CI: 1.42-2.44 (women); OR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.31-2.16 (men) and OR = 1.73, 95%CI: 1.31-2.28 (women). However, low birth weight predicted having a large (> 85 percentile) % truncal fat only in women (OR = 1.40, 95%CI: 1.03-1.91). In conclusion, in these men and women born in a period in which fetal malnutrition was prevalent, birth weight showed complex, frequently non-linear associations with adult body fat, highlighting the need for interventions to prevent low and high birth weight during pregnancy.
