Preparation and application of pyraclostrobin microcapsule formulations

Preparation and sustained-release of chitosan-alginate bilayer microcapsules containing aromatic compounds with different functional groups

This study investigated the release of aromatic compounds with distinct functional groups within bilayer microcapsules. Bilayer microcapsules of four distinctive core materials (benzyl alcohol, eugenol, cinnamaldehyde, and benzoic acid) were synthesized via freeze-drying. Chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (ALG) were used as wall materials. CS concentration, using orthogonal experiments with the loading ratio as a metric. Under optimal conditions, three other types of microcapsules (cinnamic aldehyde, benzoic acid, and benzyl alcohol) were obtained. The four types of microcapsules were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and their sustained release characteristics were evaluated. The optimal conditions were: CS dosage, 1.2 %; CS-to-eugenol mass ratio, 1:2; and CS-to-ALG mass ratio, 1:1. By comparing the IR spectra of the four types of microcapsules, wall material, and core material, the core materials were revealed to be encapsulated within the wall material. SEM results revealed that the granular protuberances on the surface of the microcapsules were closely aligned and persistent when magnified 2000×. The TEM results indicated that all four microcapsules had a spherical and bilayer structure. The thermal stability and sustained release results showed that the four microcapsules were more resilient and less volatile than the four core materials. The release conformed to first-order kinetics, and the release ratios of the four microcapsules were as follows: benzyl alcohol microcapsules ˃ eugenol microcapsules ˃ cinnamaldehyde microcapsules ˃ benzoic acid microcapsules. The prepared bilayer microcapsules encapsulated four different core materials with good sustained release properties.

Multi-Stimuli-Responsive, Topology-Regulated, and Lignin-Based Nano/Microcapsules from Pickering Emulsion Templates for Bidirectional Delivery of Pesticides

The increasing demand for improving pesticide utilization efficiency has prompted the development of sustainable, targeted, and stimuli-responsive delivery systems. Herein, a multi-stimuli-responsive nano/microcapsule bidirectional delivery system loaded with pyraclostrobin (Pyr) is prepared through interfacial cross-linking from a lignin-based Pickering emulsion template. During this process, methacrylated alkali lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are utilized as stabilizers for the tunable oil-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion. Subsequently, a thiol-ene radical reaction occurs with the acid-labile cross-linkers at the oil-water interface, leading to the formation of lignin nano/microcapsules (LNCs) with various topological shapes. Through the investigation of the polymerization process and the structure of LNC, it was found that the amphiphilicity-driven diffusion and distribution of cyclohexanone impact the topology of LNC. The obtained Pyr@LNC exhibits high encapsulation efficiency, tunable size, and excellent UV shielding to Pyr. Additionally, the flexible topology of the Pyr@LNC shell enhances the retention and adhesion of the foliar surface. Furthermore, Pyr@LNC exhibits pH/laccase-responsive targeting against Botrytis disease, enabling the intelligent release of Pyr. The in vivo fungicidal activity shows that efficacy of Pyr@LNC is 53% ± 2% at 14 days postspraying, whereas the effectiveness of Pyr suspension concentrate is only 29% ± 4%, and the acute toxicity of Pyr@LNC to zebrafish is reduced by more than 9-fold compared with that of Pyr technical. Moreover, confocal laser scanning microscopy shows that the LNCs can be bidirectionally translocated in plants. Therefore, the topology-regulated bidirectional delivery system LNC has great practical potential for sustainable agriculture.

Preparation, Characterization, and Bioactivity Evaluation of Lambda-Cyhalothrin Microcapsules for Slow-Controlled Release System

The utilization of interfacial polymerization in the preparation of microcapsules with a slow-controlled release has been shown to effectively improve pesticide efficacy and reduce environmental pollution. In this study, polyurea microcapsules loaded with lambda-cyhalothrin were prepared by an interfacial polymerization method using modified isocyanate (MDI) as the wall material and GT-34 as the initiator. The microcapsules were fully characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, etc., and release behaviors were investigated. The results indicated that the microcapsules had a smooth surface and uniform distribution, the average particle size of the microcapsules was 1.97 μm, and the encapsulation efficiency of lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules could reach 91.48%. Compared with other commercial formulations, the microcapsules exhibited an excellent sustained release property (>7 days) in a 50% acetonitrile aqueous solution (v/v). Subsequently, in vitro release studies showed that the lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules could consistently control the release of the core materials at different pH, temperature, and MDI addition amount conditions. The release of lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules was in accordance with the first-order model release, which was mainly by the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Furthermore, the biological activity on Myzus persicae showed that the microcapsules' persistence period was above 21 days, which was longer than that for the emulsifiable concentrate formulation.

Dissipation, Residue and Human Dietary Risk Assessment of Pyraclostrobin and Cyazofamid in Grapes Using an HPLC-UV Detector

Pyraclostrobin is a new broad-spectrum methoxyacrylic acid fungicide. Cyazofamid is a new selective foliar spray acaricide. Here, we studied the degradation rate and final residues of pyraclostrobin and cyazofamid in grape and evaluated their dietary risk to consumers. The average recoveries of pyraclostrobin ether ester, cyazofamid and cyazofamid metabolite (CCIM) in grapes were 84-94%, 92-98% and 99-104%, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 6.0-20.3%, 2.4-10.5% and 1.3-4.0%, respectively, and the LOQs were all 0.05 mg/kg. The digestion dynamics of the experimental sites were in accordance with the first-order kinetic equation. The degradation half-lives of pyraclostrobin ether ester and cyazofamid were 17.8 d-28.9 d and 4.3 d-7.8 d, respectively. The final residues of pyraclostrobin ether ester, cyazofamid and CCIM in grapes were <0.05-1.88 mg/kg, <0.05-0.31 mg/kg and <0.05-0.47 mg/kg, respectively. Using probability models, the total chronic risk values for pyraclostrobin and cyazofamid were calculated to be 0.112-189.617% and 0.021-1.714%, respectively. The results of the contribution analysis indicate that pyraclostrobin poses a much greater risk to Chinese consumers than cyazofamid, especially to children and adolescents, who have a significantly greater risk than adults. This suggests that more consideration should be given to the cumulative risk of compounds for vulnerable groups in the future.

Distribution and characteristics of microplastics in an urban river: The response to urban waste management

The rivers have been proven to be potential sources and the major transport pathways of microplastic (MP) in natural aquatic eco-systems, yet there is an absence of understanding the provenances and distribution dynamics of MP in fluvial water body of urban regions. The present investigation aimed to characterize the distribution and accumulation of MPs in both surface water and riverine bed sediments in a typical urban river (Nanming River, southwest China), during the dry and wet seasons of 2021. MP were detected throughout the entire sample set, with average surface water abundances of 750 ± 53 n/m3 and 693.3 ± 40 n/m3 in dry and wet seasons, respectively, and 2250 ± 496.7 n/kg (dw) in surface sediments. Furthermore, the composition of 25 polymer types MPs were analyzed. The sediment of the Nanming River is a sink for MPs, recording their long-term accumulation. Multivariate statistical analysis-based results indicated that urban littering and agricultural input were the major contributors of non-point MP in the Nanming River, while the discharged effluent was another factor influencing the distribution of MPs in urban fluvial system. The average abundance of MPs was negatively correlated with purchase power parity (PPP), demonstrating that the poorly waste management results in a higher abundance of MPs in municipal river systems. The present study systematically characterized the distribution of MPs in medium-sized urban rivers systems in Southwest China. These findings can inform policy and management decisions to reduce MPs pollution in urban rivers and protect aquatic ecosystems.

A multidimensional optimization strategy of pyraclostrobin-loaded microcapsules to improve the selectivity between toxicological risk in zebrafish and efficacy in controlling rice blast

Developing microcapsules (MCs) delivery systems can effectively mitigate toxicological risk of highly active/toxic pesticides; whereas the controlled release functions also limiting their practical effectiveness. Therefore, designing a precise regulating strategy to balance the toxicity and bioactivity of MCs is urgently needed. Here, we prepared a series of pyraclostrobin-loaded MCs with different wall materials, particle sizes, core density and shell compactness using interfacial polymerization. The results showed that the MCs released more slowly in water with increasing particle sizes and capsule compactness, and they sunk more quickly with the increasing particle sizes and core density. Additionally, MCs with slower release speed was always accompanied with lower acute toxicity levels to zebrafish. When the release dynamics slowed down to the threshold dose on demand for disease control, facilitating settlement of MCs can further reduce toxicity within spatial and temporal dimensions. The poor accumulation of MCs with larger particle sizes or dense shell in gills was closely related to their efficient detoxification. Importantly, seven of the MCs samples possessed superior selectivity between bio-performance in controlling rice blast and toxicological hazard to fish compared to commercial formulations. The results provide a comprehensive guidance for developing an efficient and safe pesticide delivery system.

Prodrug Based on Ionic Liquids for Dual-Triggered Release of Thiabendazole

The application of triggered release pesticides can provide active ingredient release at required environmental conditions, reduce environmental problems, and toxicity to nontarget organisms. In this work, a novel prodrug that responds to water and enzymes as release triggers for thiabendazole was prepared. The release behaviors under different conditions, bioactivity against Penicillium italicum, and acute toxicity to Danio rerio of prodrugs were investigated. The results showed that the prodrug had remarkable water- and enzyme-triggered release properties, and the correlation coefficients (r ²) fitted by the Weibull model were all >0.99. Meanwhile, the prodrug showed improved antifungal efficacy against Penicillium italicum and reduced toxicity to Danio rerio. Overall, the prodrug developed offers an efficient way to triggered release pesticides, control fungal, and reduce the risk of harm to aquatic organisms.

Pectin functionalized metal-organic frameworks as dual-stimuli-responsive carriers to improve the pesticide targeting and reduce environmental risks

Encapsulation of active ingredients into intelligent response controlled release carriers has been recognized as a promising approach to enhance the utilization efficiency and reduce the environmental risks of pesticides. In this work, an intelligent redox and pectinase dual stimuli-responsive pesticide delivery system was constructed by bonding pectin with metal-organic frameworks (FeMOF nanoparticles) which were loaded with pyraclostrobin (PYR@FeMOF-pectin nanoparticles). The successful fabrication of PYR@FeMOF-pectin nanoparticles was proved by a series of physicochemical characterizations. The results indicated that the loading capacity of PYR@FeMOF-pectin nanoparticles for pyraclostrobin was approximately 20.6%. The pectin covered on the surface of PYR@FeMOF nanoparticles could protect pyraclostrobin from photolysis and improve their spreadability on rice blades effectively. Different biological stimuli associated with Magnaporthe oryzae could trigger the release of pyraclostrobin from the pesticide-loaded core-shell nanoparticles, resulting in the death of pathogens. The bioactivity survey determined that PYR@FeMOF-pectin nanoparticles had a superior fungicidal activity and a longer duration against Magnaporthe oryzae than pyraclostrobin suspension concentrate. In addition, the FeMOF-pectin nanocarriers showed no obvious phytotoxicity and could enhance the shoot length and root length of rice plants. More importantly, PYR@FeMOF-pectin nanoparticles had an 8-fold reduction in acute toxicity to zebrafish than that of pyraclostrobin suspension concentrate. Therefore, the dual-responsive FeMOF-pectin nanocarriers have great potential for realizing site-specific pesticide delivery and promoting plant growth.

The effects of polyethersulfone and Nylon 6 micromembrane filters on the pyraclostrobin detection: adsorption performance and mechanism

Adsorption of test substances on micromembrane filters during sample pretreatment before qualitative and quantitative analysis has greatly affected the accuracy of the measurement. In the present study, it was found that the adsorption rate of pyraclostrobin reached 77.7-100% when water samples of pyraclostrobin (1 mL) were filtered with polyethersulfone (PES) and Nylon 6 filters. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms were investigated from the kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics of the pyraclostrobin adsorption process, combined with attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The results showed that PES accorded with second-order adsorption kinetics and Nylon 6 with first-order adsorption kinetics, and the correlation coefficient R² was 0.98. The adsorption behavior of the two micromembranes followed the linear isothermal model, indicating that the adsorption process was through monolayer adsorption. Thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption of pyracoethyl on PES membrane was spontaneous endothermic, while that on Nylon 6 was spontaneous exothermic. The π-π electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) between pyraclostrobin and PES may promote the adsorption of PES to pyraclostrobin, and hydrogen bonding between pyraclostrobin and Nylon 6 micromembrane may be involved in the adsorption. Our study also proved that the adding 60% methanol and iodine solution (2 mmol/L) was an effective strategy to reduce the adsorption effects and to increase the accuracy of the detection.

Preparation and performance of chlorfenapyr microcapsules with a degradable polylactide-based polyurethane wall material

To improve the utilization rate of chlorfenapyr and make the wall material of chlorfenapyr microcapsules easily degradable, polylactide diol, toluene diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol were used to prepare a chlorfenapyr microcapsule suspension by interfacial polymerization. The product was characterized by the methods of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the microcapsule particles were spherical, with an encapsulation efficiency of 84.20%. The diluted product had good wetting and spreading abilities on cabbage leaves. Compared with other commercial formulations, the slow-release effect of the microcapsule suspension was more obvious and the release mechanisms conform to Fickian diffusion, with the release rate controllable by adjusting the external pH conditions. Furthermore, the wall material of the microcapsules showed good degradation performance in a phosphate-buffered solution. Microencapsulation by this method significantly increased the validity period of chlorfenapyr and the wall material was also degraded easily.

β-Glucan-Functionalized Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Smart Control of Fungicide Release and Translocation in Plants

In this work, an enzyme-responsive nanovehicle for improving captan (CAP) contact fungicide bioactivity and translocation in plant tissues was synthesized (CAP-MSNs-β-glucan) by attaching β-glucan to the outer surface of mesoporous silica nanoparticles. CAP-MSNs-β-glucan properties were tested by FTIR, ζ-potential, DLS, XRD, TGA, FE-SEM, and HR-TEM. Cargo protection ability of CAP-MSNs-β-glucan from photolysis and hydrolysis was examined in comparison to CAP commercial formulation (CAP-CF). CAP-MSNs-β-glucan distribution in plant tissues, bioactivity against Fusarium graminearum, and biotoxicity toward zebrafish (Danio rerio) were tested and compared with that of CAP-CF. CAP-MSNs-β-glucan results showed good loading efficacy reaching 18.39% and enzymatic-release dependency up to 83.8% of the total cargo after 20 days of β-glucan unsealing. CAP-MSNs-β-glucan showed significant release protection under pH changes. MSNs-β-glucan showed excellent CAP protection from UV. CAP-MSNs-β-glucan showed better distribution in corn tissues and 1.28 more inhibiting potency to Fusarium graminearum than CAP-CF. CAP-MSNs-β-glucan showed 1.88 times lower toxicity than CAP-CF to zebrafish after 96 h of treatment. We recommend using such formulations to overcome shortcomings of contact fungicides and achieve better and sustainable farming.

Lambda-cyhalothrin-loaded nanocapsules pose an unacceptable acute toxicological risk to zebrafish (Danio rerio) at the adult and larval stages but present an acceptable risk to embryos

Recently, size-controlled pesticide microcapsule (MC) delivery systems have played an important role in precision farming development; however, the potential environmental hazards of MCs with different particle sizes have not been fully characterized. In this study, we prepared a series of lambda-cyhalothrin (LC)-MCs with nano and micron-scale capsule sizes (average diameters of 209.4 nm, MC-N; 2.41 µm, MC-S; 4.87 µm, MC-M; and 12.41 µm, MC-L). The assessment results showed that the release and sedimentation behavior of LC-MCs in water and toxicity to zebrafish at three life stages were all particle size-dependent. As the diameter distribution of approximately 100 nm extended to the micron scale (~27 µm), the capsules released more slowly and sunk more quickly in water. In addition, micron-sized LC-MC exposure resulted in significantly less fish mortality and malformations of larvae and embryos compared with nanosized LC-MC exposure. The highest accumulation of MC-N in the gill and the severest toxicity to larvae suggested that the smaller size and stronger permeability of nanocapsules would pose unpredictable consequences for nontargeted organisms. The obvious toxicological differences of LC-MCs toward aquatic organisms implies that regulating MC production in an appropriate size range is an important prerequisite for achieving efficient but safe pesticide applications.

Nanomaterials and nanotechnology for the delivery of agrochemicals: strategies towards sustainable agriculture

Nanomaterials (NMs) have received considerable attention in the field of agrochemicals due to their special properties, such as small particle size, surface structure, solubility and chemical composition. The application of NMs and nanotechnology in agrochemicals dramatically overcomes the defects of conventional agrochemicals, including low bioavailability, easy photolysis, and organic solvent pollution, etc. In this review, we describe advances in the application of NMs in chemical pesticides and fertilizers, which are the two earliest and most researched areas of NMs in agrochemicals. Besides, this article concerns with the new applications of NMs in other agrochemicals, such as bio-pesticides, nucleic acid pesticides, plant growth regulators (PGRs), and pheromone. We also discuss challenges and the industrialization trend of NMs in the field of agrochemicals. Constructing nano-agrochemical delivery system via NMs and nanotechnology facilitates the improvement of the stability and dispersion of active ingredients, promotes the precise delivery of agrochemicals, reduces residual pollution and decreases labor cost in different application scenarios, which is potential to maintain the sustainability of agricultural systems and improve food security by increasing the efficacy of agricultural inputs.

Advances in Controlled-Release Pesticide Formulations with Improved Efficacy and Targetability

Pesticides are commonly used in modern agriculture and are important for global food security. However, postapplication losses due to degradation, photolysis, evaporation, leaching, surface runoff, and other processes may substantially reduce their efficacy. Controlled-release formulations can achieve the permeation-regulated transfer of an active ingredient from a reservoir to a target surface. Thus, they can maintain an active ingredient at a predetermined concentration for a specified period. This can reduce degradation and dissipation and other losses and has the potential to improve efficacy. Recent developments in controlled-release technology have adapted the concepts of intelligence and precision from the pharmaceutical industry. In this review, we present recent advances in the development of controlled-release formulations and discuss details of the preparation methods, material improvements, and application technologies.

Adsorption Properties of Comb-Shaped Polycarboxylate Dispersant onto Different Crystal Pyraclostrobin Particle Surfaces

The stability of the suspension system of the two crystal forms of pyraclostrobin is evaluated using multiple light technology, and the adsorption performance of polycarboxylate dispersant on the surface of two different crystalline pyraclostrobin particles is compared in combination with XRD, FTIR, XPS, and SEM from the microscopic view. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics studies of 2700 on the surfaces of different crystalline forms of pyraclostrobin particles show that the adsorption process of 2700 on the surfaces of pyraclostrobin crystal forms II and IV conform to pseudo-second-order kinetic adsorption model. The Ea values for crystal forms II and IV are 12.93 and 14.39 kJ∙mol⁻¹, respectively, which indicates that both adsorption processes are physical adsorption. The adsorption models of 2700 on the surfaces of pyraclostrobin crystal forms II and IV are in accordance with Langmuir adsorption isotherms. The ∆G_ad values of crystal forms II and IV are negative and the ∆S_ad values are positive at different temperatures. Therefore, the adsorption processes are spontaneous and accompanied by entropy increase. The results of this study provide an important theoretical basis for the selection of polycarboxylate dispersants in the suspension of pyraclostrobin. This study also provides a reference for the research of polycrystalline pesticide suspension concentrate.

Temperature-Responsive Pyraclostrobin-Loaded Octadecane Submicrocapsules with Lowered Toxicity

Pyraclostrobin (Pyr) is one of the most effective fungicides. However, it can degrade via photolysis in water, it is toxic to aquatic life and if inhaled, it has a low solubility in water, that leads to difficulties when applying to plants by spraying. Additionally, the necessity of repeated (weekly) sprays of fungicides when the pathogen growth risk is the highest, such as at the temperature range of 24 to 36 °C and increased humidity of about 95%, leads to loss of efficiency of the fungicide and overdose of chemicals. In the present study, pyraclostrobin was microencapsulated to solve the abovementioned issues. As a core of capsules octadecane (OD) with a melting point of 28 °C was used, thus, the release of pyraclostrobin was controlled via temperature change. Pyraclostrobin-loaded submicrocapsules (PyrSMCs) were characterized using SEM, DLS, TGA/DSC, HPLC, FTIR methods; stimuli-responsivity was tested employing in vitro tests with pathogenic culture (Fungal strain of Pyrenophora teres - CPPF-453) grown in Petri dishes. Toxicity of PyrSMCs to Artemia salina was studied as well. Size of capsules was 200–600 nm along with the presence of bigger capsules with a diameter of 1–4 µm. PyrSMCs showed excellent antifungal effects above the melting point of octadecane. PyrSMCs demonstrated 29 times less toxicity than pyraclostrobin of technical grade. Overall, results show the potential of such capsules to be applied in the agricultural industry for precise agriculture strategies.

Polylactic Acid-Graphene Oxide-based Materials for Loading and Sustained Release of Poorly Soluble Pesticides

A pesticide carrier system can offer advantages to active components, such as improving shelf life, extending the lasting period, and reducing toxicity, all of which could reduce the adverse effects of pesticides on the environment. Graphene oxide (GO) is a promising medical drug carrier material, and its research in the field of pesticides is still in the exploration stage. Herein, in order to load water-insoluble pesticides, a series of polylactic acid-graphene oxides (PLA-GOs) were produced incorporating small amounts (0.1-1 wt %) of GO using acetone-chloroform and N,N-dimethylformamide-dichloromethane, two dual-solvent systems. The prepared PLA-GO carrier materials were characterized by FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry analysis, and their effects on rice growth within 20 days were also evaluated. When the amount of GO added was 0.5% and the solvent system was acetone-chloroform, the amount of pyraclostrobin (Pyr) loaded on PLA-GO (A-0.5%) was very high (39.89%). The PLA-GO pesticide microsphere showed a significantly sustained release of Pyr (up to 30 d). Furthermore, the indoor bioassay results showed that the PLA-GO pesticide microsphere (EC₅₀ = 1.2682) had the best fungicidal activity against Rhizoctonia solani, followed by Pyr technical (EC₅₀ = 2.3137) and commercial Pyr microcapsule suspension (EC₅₀ = 3.4570). In conclusion, it was found that PLA-GOs prepared using the acetone-chloroform system were more suitable as a pesticide carrier, which provided a preliminary basis for GO to realize the coating of water-insoluble pesticides.

Fabrication of abamectin-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles by emulsion-solvent evaporation to improve photolysis stability and extend insecticidal activity

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) can be designed to effectively load, protect, and control the release of pesticides. In this study, emulsion-solvent evaporation was used to fabricate abamectin-loaded MSNs. Our method could deliver abamectin in the process of MSN self-assembly, resulting in simple operation, short preparation period, and outstanding drug carrying capacity. The characteristics of abamectin-loaded MSNs, including morphology, loading content, stability against photolysis, controlled release behavior, and toxicological effect, were systematically investigated. Abamectin-loaded MSNs were successfully produced, having spherical shape, rough surface, uniform particle sizes, typically hollow structure, high loading efficiency (44.8%), excellent photodegradation-reducing ability, and controlled-release properties. The biological activity survey for abamectin-loaded MSNs showed excellent toxicological properties against Plutella xylostella larvae, and maintained biological activity until the 15th day, with 70% mortality of the target insect. The results of this study are beneficial for the development of a delivery system for the rational and effective usage of pesticides.

Embryonic development and oxidative stress effects in the larvae and adult fish livers of zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to the strobilurin fungicides, kresoxim-methyl and pyraclostrobin

Two important strobilurin fungicides, kresoxim-methyl and pyraclostrobin, are widely used globally. Their effects on embryonic development and oxidative stress effects in the larvae and adult fish livers of zebrafish (Danio rerio) were assessed in our study. The hatching, mortality, and teratogenic rates were determined when the eggs of fish were exposed to kresoxim-methyl and pyraclostrobin for 24-144 h postfertilization (hpf). For further study, the effects of kresoxim-methyl and pyraclostrobin on antioxidant enzymes [catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD)], detoxification enzymes [carboxylesterase (CarE) and glutathione S-transferase (GST)] and the malondialdehyde (MDA) content of larval zebrafish (96 h) and male or female adult zebrafish livers (up to 28 d) were evaluated for potential toxicity mechanisms. The study of embryonic development revealed that both kresoxim-methyl and pyraclostrobin caused developmental toxicity (hatching inhibition, mortality, and teratogenic rates) increase with significant concentration- and time-dependent responses, and the 144-h median lethal values (LC₅₀) of kresoxim-methyl and pyraclostrobin were 195.0 and 81.3 μg L^-1, respectively. In the larval zebrafish study, both kresoxim-methyl and pyraclostrobin at the highest concentrations (100 μg L^-1 and 15 μg L^-1, respectively) significantly increased the CAT, POD and CarE activities and MDA content compared with those of the control group (P < 0.05). We further found that oxidative stress effects in adult zebrafish livers caused by long-term kresoxim-methyl and pyraclostrobin exposure differed with time and sex. Regarding the residues in natural waters, the potential adverse effects of kresoxim-methyl and pyraclostrobin would be relatively low for adult zebrafish but must not be overlooked for zebrafish embryos/larvae (hatching impairment). Our results from the detoxification enzyme study also initially indicated that adult zebrafish had a greater detoxification ability than larvae and that males had a greater detoxification ability than females.

Recent advances and remaining barriers to producing novel formulations of fungicides for safe and sustainable agriculture

BACKGROUND

Fungi have evolved for 1 billion years and due to their adaptability and resilience can be found in multiple habitats around the globe. Among numerous species of fungi, some are pathogenic, and humans have battled since the dawn of organized agriculture to reduce production losses. With the arrival of fungicides many gains have been made in this struggle. However, though fungicides have greatly contributed to substantial increase in agricultural productivity, their over usage has led to both health and environmental repercussions. They remain cornerstone of the agriculture industry, however, development of safer formulations to champion sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture is of great importance, especially in face of a growing global population, climate change and increasing fungal resistance to existing compounds.

SCOPE AND APPROACH

The aim of this review is to present the state of the art in fungicides formulations developed for agrochemistry, also describing recent improvements in their safety, with special focus on fungicides used most against the ten most important fungal pathogens.

KEY FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS

The major focus in the field remains to be the improvement of the overall performance of the fungicide formulations. The research trends are also moving towards developing more eco-friendly formulations. However, there are still very few studies assessing nanoformulations toxicity and environmental impact. For example, there is still a limited body of research on the holistic assessment of nanoformulation shells' fate in soil and in the environment after release, as well as redistribution within plants after absorption, with no studies on human or environmental exposure.

Fabrication and Characterization of a Low-Cost Microfluidic System for the Manufacture of Alginate-Lacasse Microcapsules

The development of microfluidics-based systems in the recent years has provided a rapid and controlled method for the generation of monodisperse microencapsulates for multiple applications. Here, we explore the design, manufacture and characterization of a low-cost microsystem for the encapsulation of the fungal laccase from Pycnoporus sanguineus CS43 in alginate microcapsules. Multiphysics simulations were used to overview the fluid behavior within the device and estimate the resulting capsule size. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) sheets were used for final microsystem manufacture. Different flow rates of the continuous (Q_c) and discrete (Q_d) phases in the ranges of 83–293 mL/h and 1–5 mL/h, respectively, were evaluated for microcapsule fabrication. Universal Serial Bus (USB) microscope and image analysis was used to measure the final particle size. Laccase encapsulation was evaluated using spectrophotometry and with the aid of fluorescent dyes and confocal microscopy. Results showed microcapsule size was in the range of 203.13–716.00 μm and Q_c was found as the dominant parameter to control capsule size. There was an effective enzyme encapsulation of 65.94% with respect to the initial laccase solution.

The structure of agricultural microplastics (PT, PU and UF) and their sorption capacities for PAHs and PHE derivates under various salinity and oxidation treatments

Microplastic (MP) pollution and its potential to concentrate and transport organic contaminants in environments have recently gained widespread attention. Compared to traditional nonpolar plastics such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), study about the environmental behavior of polyurethane (PT), polyuria (PU) and urea-formaldehyde resin (UF), which are typically used as shell materials for pesticide microcapsules and have polar structure is scarce. In the present study, we investigated the sorption capacities and binding mechanisms of PT, PU and UF for three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, naphthalene, phenanthrene (PHE), and pyrene) and two PHE derivates (ethylphenanthrene-2-carboxylate (2-CPHE) and 2-methylphenathrene (2-MPHE)) selected as the model compounds, and the effects of salinity and UV and/or H₂O₂ aging treatments on PHE sorption to MPs. The results showed that PT, PU and UF had negative surface charges, micron-scaled sizes and abundant polar functional groups containing O and N elements. PT, PU and UF could sorb PAHs efficiently with sorption coefficients (K_d) being in the range of 8.11 × 10³-9.53 × 10⁵ (L/Kg) and partitioning was the main sorption mechanism with polar interactions (H-boning and p/π-π EDA interactions) also contributing. The sorption capacity of the three MPs changed mainly depending on their glass transition temperatures (T_g). Furthermore, high salinity decreased the surface zeta-potential of the MPs and enhanced PHE sorption to MPs. In addition, aging treatments with UV and/or H₂O₂ markedly decreased the T_g of PT and enhanced its sorption capacity for PHE, while opposite results were obtained for PU. The findings on the sorption mechanisms of PAHs to agricultural MPs are useful for predicting the transport, fate and persistence of the co-existing HOCs in agricultural ecosystems and provide a scientific basis for the comprehensive risk assessment of agricultural MPs.

Effect on the characterization of metolachlor polyurea microcapsules with urea instead of polyamines

In this paper, a novel metolachlor microcapsules suspension (CS) was prepared by interfacial polymerization. Metolachlor polyurea microcapsules suspension was successfully prepared by urea instead of polyamines which could reduce the use of organic solvents and production costs. The synthesized microcapsules were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, Scanning Electron Microscope, Ultraviolet Spectrometry, Thermogravimetric analyses and particle size analyzer. In conclusion, the diameter of the urea microcapsules were the smallest (11.52 μm) and excellent encapsulation efficiency (81.45%). In addition, Urea microcapsules had compact microstructures and global shapes, which had a good thermal stability and metolachlor could be preserved better in the polyurea microcapsules. These results indicated that the prepared microcapsules by urea had better thermal storage properties and physicochemical property. The microcapsule suspension of metolachlor hasn’t been researched yet. Therefore, it is significant to prepare microcapsule suspension. More importantly, there is no use of organic solvents in the preparation of microcapsules suspension, which avoided the pollution of solvents to the ecological environment. It is hoped that this polyurea material will be applied in the field of pesticide synthesis and polymers.
