Surface Active Salivary Metabolites Indicate Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

PURPOSE

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a highly prevalent and potentially serious sleep disorder, requires effective screening tools. Saliva is a useful biological fluid with various metabolites that might also influence upper airway patency by affecting surface tension in the upper airway. However, little is known about the composition and role of salivary metabolites in OSA. Therefore, we investigated the metabolomics signature in saliva from the OSA patients and evaluated the associations between identified metabolites and salivary surface tension.

METHODS

We studied 68 subjects who visited sleep clinic due to the symptoms of OSA. All underwent full-night in-lab polysomnography. Patients with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) < 10 were classified to the control, and those with AHI ≥ 10 were the OSA groups. Saliva samples were collected before and after sleep. The centrifuged saliva samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry (ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry; UPLC-MS/MS). Differentially expressed salivary metabolites were identified using open source software (XCMS) and Compound Discoverer 2.1. Metabolite set enrichment analysis (MSEA) was performed using MetaboAnalyst 5.0. The surface tension of the saliva samples was determined by the pendant drop method.

RESULTS

Three human-derived metabolites (1-palmitoyl-2-[5-hydroxyl-8-oxo-6-octenoyl]-sn-glycerol-3-phosphatidylcholine [PHOOA-PC], 1-palmitoyl-2-[5-keto-8-oxo-6-octenoyl]-sn-glycerol-3-phosphatidylcholine [KPOO-PC], and 9-nitrooleate) were significantly upregulated in the after-sleep salivary samples from the OSA patients compared to the control group samples. Among the candidate metabolites, only PHOOA-PC was correlated with the AHI. In OSA samples, salivary surface tension decreased after sleep. The differences in surface tension were negatively correlated with PHOOA-PC and 9-nitrooleate concentrations. Furthermore, MSEA revealed that arachidonic acid-related metabolism pathways were upregulated in the after-sleep samples from the OSA group.

CONCLUSIONS

This study revealed that salivary PHOOA-PC was correlated positively with the AHI and negatively with salivary surface tension in the OSA group. Salivary metabolomic analysis may improve our understanding of upper airway dynamics and provide new insights into novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets in OSA.

How changes to the substrate's physical characteristics can influence the deposition of touch and salivary deposits

An in-depth study into the physical substrate characteristics such as substrate surface roughness, topography, and physicochemical characteristics like wettability and surface free energy (SFE) was conducted to investigate the impact on the deposition and adherence of touch and salivary deposits on aluminium and polypropylene. A robust protocol was established to generate a set of substrates with a controlled linear surface roughness range (0.5-3.5 µm) in order to identify the impact of surface roughness on DNA transfer, persistence, prevalence, and recovery (DNA-TPPR). The polypropylene substrate was shown to produce fibres when artificially roughened, becoming more prominent at a higher surface roughness range, and has shown to have a direct impact on the distribution of salivary and touch deposits. At the low to moderate surface roughness range 0.5-2.0 µm, salivary and touch deposits have generally shown to follow the topographical features of the substrate they were deposited on, before a plateau of the surface roughness measure on the deposit was observed, indicating that a saturation point was reached and the grooves in the substrate were beginning to fill. Touch deposits have shown to maintain a consistent deposition height pre-surface roughness threshold, irrespective of substrate surface roughness while the deposition height of salivary deposits was heavily influenced by substrate surface roughness and topography. The substrate SFE, wettability, hydrophobicity, and the surface tension of the deposit was shown to drive the adhesion properties of the saliva and touch deposits on the respective substrates, and it was observed that this may be of importance for the improvement of the current DNA-TPPR understanding, DNA sampling protocols, and DNA transfer considerations within casework.

Interfacial Dynamics of Adsorption Layers as Supports for Biomedical Research and Diagnostics

The input of chemical and physical sciences to life sciences is increasingly important. Surface science as a complex multidisciplinary research area provides many relevant practical tools to support research in medicine. The tensiometry and surface rheology of human biological liquids as diagnostic tools have been very successfully applied. Additionally, for the characterization of pulmonary surfactants, this methodology is essential to deepen the insights into the functionality of the lungs and for the most efficient administration of certain drugs. Problems in ophthalmology can be addressed using surface science methods, such as the stability of the wetting films and the development of artificial tears. The serious problem of obesity is fast-developing in many industrial countries and must be better understood, while therapies for its treatment must also be developed. Finally, the application of fullerenes as a suitable system for detecting cancer in humans is discussed.

Developing a Paper-Based Antigen Assay to Differentiate between Coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2 Spike Variants

COVID-19 first appeared in December of 2019 in Wuhan, China. Since then, it has become a global pandemic. A robust and scalable diagnostics strategy is crucial for containing and monitoring the pandemic. RT-PCR is a known, reliable method for COVID-19 diagnostics, which can differentiate between SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses. However, PCR is location-dependent, time-consuming, and relatively expensive. Thus, there is a need for a more flexible method, which may be produced in an off-the-shelf format and distributed more widely. Paper-based immunoassays can fulfill this function. Here, we present the first steps toward a paper-based test, which can differentiate between different spike proteins of various coronaviruses, SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2, and CoV-HKU1, with negligible cross-reactivity for HCoV-OC43 and HCoV-229E in a single assay, which takes less than 30 min. Furthermore, our test can distinguish between fractions of the same spike protein. This is done by an altered assay design with four test line locations where each antigen builds a unique, identifiable binding pattern. The effect of several factors, such as running media, immunoprobe concentration, and antigen interference, is considered. We find that running media has a significant effect on the final binding pattern where human saliva provides results while human serum leads to the lowest signal quality.

Effect of a newly developed pastille on the salivary flow rate in subjects with dry mouth symptoms: a randomized, controlled, monocentric clinical study

Background

Xerostomia is associated with several diseases and is a side effect of certain drugs, resulting from reduced saliva secretion. Often, aged and sometimes younger people suffer from (idiopathic) xerostomia. Chewing gum and sucking pastilles may relieve symptoms of xerostomia by increasing the salivary flow rate due to the mechanical effect of sucking and gustatory stimulation. Swallowing problems and the urge to cough or experiencing a tickling sensation in the throat might be alleviated through a reduction in dry mouth symptoms. We investigated whether a pastille containing four polysaccharides increased the salivary flow rate and relieved the symptoms of dry mouth.

Methods

Participating subjects with xerostomia were randomized into two equally balanced treatment groups. Subjects received the pastille on Day 1 and a control product (Parafilm®) on Day 3, or vice versa. Unstimulated saliva was collected every 2.5 min for 0–10 min. Stimulated saliva was collected after subjects sucked the pastille or the control product. The salivary flow rate was determined gravimetrically, and, in parallel, the feeling of dry mouth was assessed using a visual analog scale. Saliva surface tension was measured in pooled saliva samples (0–5 min of sampling). Additionally, in stimulated saliva from six subjects who sucked the pastille, the presence of the main ingredient—gum arabic—was examined by Raman spectroscopy.

Results

Chewing the pastille significantly increased the mean salivary flow rate by 8.03 g/10 min compared to the mean changes after chewing the control product (+ 3.71 g/10 min; p < 0.0001). The mean score of dry mouth was significantly alleviated by the pastille (− 19.9 ± 17.9 mm) compared to the control product (− 3.3 ± 18.1 mm). No difference between the two products was seen regarding the saliva surface tension. Gum arabic was present in the saliva of all investigated subjects for up to 10 min after sucking the pastille.

Conclusions

The pastille was well tolerated and effective in increasing the salivary flow rate and reducing mouth dryness after sucking. These results were in line with the detection of the main ingredient, gum arabic, in saliva for up to 10 min after sucking the pastille.

Development and optimisation of simulated salivary fluid for biorelevant oral cavity dissolution

Drug release within the oral cavity can be of paramount importance for formulations that are designed for specific purposes such as taste-masking, faster onset of therapeutic action, localization of treatment or avoidance of first-pass metabolism. Preclinical methods for assessment of dissolution in the oral cavity are necessary for design and development of these formulation but currently there is no consensus on what variables should be defined to achieve biorelevance in these tests. In this study, biorelevant simulated salivary fluids (SSFs) that can be uniformly applied for oral cavity dissolution testing were developed. Unstimulated saliva (US) SSF and stimulated saliva (SS) SSF were separately developed since the two states significantly differ. Physicochemical properties including pH, buffer capacity, surface tension and viscosity were assessed during development and optimised to mimic human saliva (HS). In order to account for the salivary proteins in HS, use of bovine submaxillary mucin (BSM) and porcine gastric mucin (PGM) in SSFs was evaluated. Following optimisation of the SSFs, biorelevance of the developed SSFs to HS was assessed by their comparative physicochemical properties as well as dissolution profiles of three diverse model compounds (sildenafil citrate, efavirenz, and caffeine) which showed comparable profiles between the SSFs and HS. This work addresses the lack of uniformed biorelevant dissolution media for oral cavity dissolution studies and provides a basis for standardised dissolution tests that provide consistency and harmonisation in future oral cavity dissolution studies. We envisage that this will have a positive impact on the development of new medicines that require functionality in the oral cavity.

Endogenous salivary citrate is associated with enhanced rheological properties following oral capsaicin stimulation

What is the central question of this study? What are the relationships between physical properties of saliva, protein composition and metabolite composition? What is the main finding and its importance? Salivary citrate, one of the major endogenous metabolites in saliva, increased upon capsaicin stimulation and was associated with improved physical properties measured by extensional rheology. This suggests salivary gland citrate transporters might be a valuable area of future study.

ABSTRACT

Saliva displays viscoelastic properties which enable coating, lubrication and protection of the oral mucosa and hard tissues. Individuals lacking saliva or perceiving oral dryness can manage their symptoms using artificial saliva preparations, but these often fail to mimic the sensation and functionality of natural saliva. It is widely acknowledged that mucins (MUC7 and MUC5B) confer saliva's rheological properties, but artificial saliva containing purified mucins is still often an inadequate substitute. This work aimed to explore salivary components that influence salivary extensional rheology to better understand how natural saliva could be replicated. Saliva was stimulated via control and capsaicin solutions in healthy volunteers. Extensional rheology was analysed using a CaBER-1 (capillary breakup) extensional rheometer. Protein composition, including mucins, was measured by gel-electrophoresis band densitometry and metabolites were measured by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Capsaicin stimulation significantly increased capillary breakup time, extensional viscosity and the abundance of most major salivary proteins. Stimulation also increased salivary citrate and choline concentrations. Significant correlations were found between capillary breakup time and amylase (r = 0.67, P < 0.05), statherin (ρ = 0.66, P < 0.05) and citrate (ρ = 0.81, P < 0.01). The relationship between citrate and salivary rheology was subsequently investigated in vitro. These results suggest that citrate and non-mucin proteins are stronger predictors of salivary rheology than the more often studied mucin glycoproteins. Potential mechanisms are discussed and future work in this area could help formulate more effective saliva substitutes, more closely resembling natural saliva.

Nanoparticles And Human Saliva: A Step Towards Drug Delivery Systems For Dental And Craniofacial Biomaterials

Aim

The aims of this study were to investigate new nano-formulations based on ZnO and Ag nanoparticle (NP) compounds when used against clinical strains of oral gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and to examine the stability and behaviour of nano-formulation mixtures in saliva based on different compositions of Ag NPs, ZnO NPs and ZnO+x·Ag NPs. Methods: ZnO NPs with and without nanosilver were obtained by microwave solvothermal synthesis. Then, antibacterial activity was evaluated against bacteria isolated from human saliva. Behavior and nanoparticle solutions were evaluated in human saliva and control (artificial saliva and deionized water). Results were statistically compared.

Results

The NP mixtures had an average size of 30±3 nm, while the commercial Ag NPs had an average size of 55±5 nm. The suspensions displayed differing antibacterial activities and kinetics of destabilisation processes, depending on NPs composition and fluid types.

Conclusion

The present study showed that all NPs suspensions displayed significant destabilisation and high destabilisation over the 24 h of the analyses. The agglomeration processes of NPs in human saliva can be reversible.

Comprehensive investigation of saliva replacement liquids for the treatment of xerostomia

The sensation of dry mouth also referred to as xerostomia is becoming increasingly common worldwide. Current treatment strategies include topical agents, sialagogues and saliva substitutes. The latter have been reported to be ineffective as special physicochemical features of natural saliva have so far been ignored (e.g., buffer capacity, osmolality, etc.). The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate the most relevant physicochemical properties of three products frequently used in the clinics and compare them to unstimulated whole saliva (UWS). Sialin-Sigma®, Glandomed® and Xylitol CVS Health^TM Dry Mouth Spray were characterized regarding their pH, osmolality, electrical conductivity, buffer capacity, rheological behaviour, microstructure, surface tension and wettability and compared to UWS. The influence of residual saliva was examined under consideration of the conditions of xerostomia to assess whether the quantity given in the instruction for use is appropriate. All three products showed significant differences to UWS regarding the values received. Only Xylitol CVS Health^TM Dry Mouth Spray showed a comparable wettability. It could be further determined that the recommended doses were too low. These data can not only be used for an improved understanding of saliva, but also for the development of a replacement fluid to successfully alleviate xerostomia.

Morphology of Dried Drop Patterns of Saliva from a Healthy Individual Depending on the Dynamics of Its Surface Tension

Background: The study of processes in the drying drops of biological fluids (dried drop patterns) and the method of dynamic surface tensiometry can be attributed to integral methods of assessing the state of the organism. Research objective: to establish the relationship between the type of crystallization patterns and the surface tension of human saliva in normal conditions. Methods: 100 volunteers (40 males, 60 females) that were aged 30–59 participated in the study. In all saliva samples, the parameters of dynamic tensiometry, types of crystallization patterns and 11 biochemical parameters were determined. Results: No statistically significant differences in the saliva crystallization patterns were observed, depending on the age and gender characteristics of the volunteers. A negative correlation of the area of the crystallization zone and the surface tension of saliva is shown. When considering the crystallization patterns, their considerable variability was noted; on this basis, the entire studied sample was divided into four clusters by surface tension. Conclusion: In general, the crystallization patterns that are inside the selected groups remain quite heterogeneous. This increases the likelihood of making an incorrect diagnosis when using visual methods to evaluate the crystallization patterns, which significantly limits the use of such diagnostic methods in clinical practice.

Saliva could act as an emulsifier during oral processing of oil/fat

Human saliva is a fluid naturally secreted in the oral cavity that interacts with food and food components for bolus formation, structure degradation, as well as lubrication. Because of the presence of salivary proteins, we speculate that saliva could also function as an effective emulsifier during oral processing of oil/fat. In this preliminary work, experiments were then designed to test this hypothesis. Whole human saliva from three healthy subjects were collected and analyzed for protein content, surface tension, and molecular weight distribution. Saliva emulsions were obtained both in vitro one and in situ for all three participating subjects. Droplet size distribution, zeta potential, and microstructure of such emulsions were examined immediately after the emulsification. Results show that stable saliva emulsions can be produced during oral processing of either pure oil (rapeseed oil) or fat food (pork belly in this work). Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis showed that protein fractions of 27 and 55 kDa molecular weights were favored for emulsion formation. This work suggests that human saliva could function as an effective emulsifier and oral emulsification could be an important mechanism for the oral processing of oil/fat. Despite being preliminary, findings from this work provide a new scientific insight to our understanding of the oral behavior of oil/fat and their sensory perception. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Food industry is currently under a growing pressure to use novel techniques and ingredients to minimize the use of oil/fat in food products but without compromising its sensory quality. However, food industry has limited progresses because of the lack of understanding of the mechanisms of oral sensation and perception of oil/fat. Whereas there have been extensive debates about the sensory mechanisms of oil/fat, this work takes a step back by examining the oral behavior of oil/fat. Findings show that saliva can actually function as emulsifier to oil/fat, which means that ingested oil/fat will be dispersed and converted into an emulsion at the oral stage. The findings from this work offer food industry new insight on the sensory mechanisms of oil/fat.

Aging-related changes in quantity and quality of saliva: Where do we stand in our understanding?

Saliva is crucial to oral processing of food and consequently is also related to the sensory and textural experience. It is often assumed that the secretion and properties of saliva change with age, which can result in dry mouth conditions, taste aberrations. Such changes may result in reduced nutrient intake and malnutrition besides adversely affecting the quality of life. Based on some recent research findings, this article reviews our current understandings on age-dependent changes on quantity (bulk salivary flow rate) as well as quality of saliva (e.g., composition, viscosity, lubrication) in healthy elderly individuals. The review begins with a short introduction to histological changes of salivary glands upon aging. This is followed by covering different aspects of salivary changes with key articles highlighting decreased flow rate, increased ionic concentration, decreased calcium and mucin content in saliva of elderly subjects consequently affecting the oral coating and flavor perception. We also highlight issues in data associated with respect to variance in saliva collection protocols as well as factors influencing such results other than age, such as health conditions and polypharmacy. Clear gaps in literature have been highlighted with respect to lack of quantitative data in viscoelasticity, rheology, and lubrication properties of saliva in healthy elderly population and the potential impact of changes in these material properties on sensory and textural perception of food and consequently food intake. Such insights will not only have clinical implications for maintaining optimal oral health in elderly population but also serve to optimize food for elderly population. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The population has undergone a fundamental change in its age structure globally, with a rapid increase in elderly population. Innovation of tailored foods is still in its early stage to satisfy the needs of growing aging population. One of the biggest challenges in such food product development is lack of adequate understanding and characterization of endogenous factors, that is, age-related changes in saliva, which may influence oral processing of food and subsequently nutrient intake. Aging affects the salivary glands and alters quantity (flow rate) and quality (e.g., ion and protein composition, rheology, tribology) of saliva. Thus, older adults may suffer from dry mouth, taste aberration, and poor oral hygiene, greatly affecting their quality of life. This review provides insights into how age versus other health conditions influence salivary properties. Understanding of age-dependent changes in salivary rheology and tribology will be of paramount importance to optimize food for elderly population.

Interfacial tensiometry and dilational surface visco-elasticity of biological liquids in medicine

Dynamic surface tensions and dilational visco-elasticity are easy accessible parameters of liquids. For human body liquids, such as urine, blood serum, amniotic fluid, gastric juice, saliva and others, these parameters are very characteristic for the health status of people. In case of a disease the composition of certain liquids specifically changes and the measured characteristics of dynamic surface tension of the dilational surface elasticity and viscosity reflect these changes in a clear way. Thus, this kind of physico-chemical measurements represent sensitive tools for evaluating the severity of a disease and can serve as control tool for the efficiency of applied therapies. The overview summarises the results of a successful work over about 25years on this subject and gives specific insight into a number of diseases for which the diagnostics as well as the therapy control have been significantly improved by the application of physico-chemical experimental techniques.

Preliminary findings on the correlation of saliva pH, buffering capacity, flow rate and consistency in relation to waterpipe tobacco smoking

The aim of the present comparative study was to compare some salivary characteristics between exclusive waterpipe smokers (EWPS) and non-smokers. 72 males (36 EWPS) were recruited. The volume of stimulated saliva was determined and divided by the duration of saliva collection. The pH was measured directly using a pH meter. The buffering capacity was determined using a quantitative method which involved the addition of 10 µl HCl. Up to a total of 160 µL was titrated up to obtain a pH titration curve. At 50 µL of titrated HCl, buffering capacity was ranked into three categories: high, medium and low. EWPS and non-smoker groups had similar flow rates (1.81 ± 0.79 and 1.78 ± 1.14 mL min-1) and similar baseline pH (6.60 ± 0.37 and 6.76 ± 0.39). Statistically significant differences in the two groups' pH were observed from 30 to 160 µL of titrated up HCl. At 50 µL of titrated up HCl, the EWPS group compared to the non-smoker group had a significantly higher pH (4.79 ± 0.72 vs. 5.32 ± 0.79). To conclude, waterpipe tobacco smoking alters the buffering capacity but does not alter either salivary flow rates or the baseline pH and consistency.

Dynamic interfacial tension of surfactant solutions

The dynamics of surfactant interfacial layers was first discussed more than a century ago. In 1946 the most important work by Ward and Tordai was published which is still the theoretical basis of all new models to describe the time dependence of interfacial properties. In addition to the diffusion controlled adsorption mechanism, many other models have been postulated in literature, however, well performed experiments with well defined surfactant systems have shown that the diffusional transport is the main process governing the entire formation of surfactant adsorption layers. The main prerequisite, in addition to the diffusional transport, is the consideration of the right boundary condition at the interface, given by a respective equation of state. In addition to the classical models of Langmuir and Frumkin, also the so-called reorientation or interfacial aggregation models are to be assumed to reach a quantitative description of respective experimental data. Moreover, the adsorption of surfactants at the interface between water and a gas phase different from air can be strongly influenced by the type of molecules within the gas phase, such as alkane vapours. These oil molecules co-adsorb from the gas phase and change the adsorption kinetics strongly. Besides the discussion of how to apply theoretical adsorption kinetics models correctly, a large number of experimental data are presented and the way of a quantitative analysis of the adsorption mechanism and the main characteristic parameters is presented. This includes micellar solutions as well as mixtures of surfactants of ionic and non-ionic nature.

Reduced Blood Coagulation on Roll-to-Roll, Shrink-Induced Superhydrophobic Plastics

The unique antiwetting properties of superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces prevent the adhesion of water and bodily fluids, including blood, urine, and saliva. While typical manufacturable approaches to create SH surfaces rely on chemical and structural modifications, such approaches are expensive, require postprocessing, and are often not biocompatible. By contrast, it is demonstrated that purely structural SH features are easily formed using high throughput roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing by shrinking a prestressed thermoplastic with a thin, stiff layer of silver and calcium. These features are subsequently embossed into any commercially available and Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved plastic. The R2R SH surfaces have contact angles >150° and contact angle hysteresis <10°. Importantly, the surfaces minimize blood adhesion, leading to reduced blood coagulation without the need for anticoagulants. SH surfaces have >4200× reduction of blood residue area compared to the nonstructured controls of the same material. In addition, blood clotting is reduced >5× using whole blood directly from the patient. Furthermore, these surfaces can be easily configured into 3D shapes, as demonstrated with SH tubes. With the simple scale-up production and the eliminated need for anticoagulants to prevent clotting, the proposed conformable SH surfaces can be impactful for a wide range of medical tools, including catheters and microfluidic channels.

Surface tension in human pathophysiology and its application as a medical diagnostic tool

Introduction: Pathological features of disease appear to be quite different. Despite this diversity, the common feature of various disorders underlies physicochemical and biochemical factors such as surface tension. Human biological fluids comprise various proteins and phospholipids which are capable of adsorption at fluid interfaces and play a vital role in the physiological function of human organs. Surface tension of body fluids correlates directly to the development of pathological states.

Methods: In this review, the variety of human diseases mediated by the surface tension changes of biological phenomena and the failure of biological fluids to remain in their native state are discussed.

Results: Dynamic surface tension measurements of human biological fluids depend on various parameters such as sex, age and changes during pregnancy or certain disease. It is expected that studies of surface tension behavior of human biological fluids will provide additional information and might become useful in medical practice. Theoretical background on surface tension measurement and surface tension values of reference fluids obtained from healthy and sick patients are depicted.

Conclusion: It is well accepted that no single biomarker will be effective in clinical diagnosis. The surface tension measurement combined with routine lab tests may be a novel non-invasive method which can not only facilitate the discovery of diagnostic models for various diseases and its severity, but also be a useful tool for monitoring treatment efficacy. We therefore expect that studies of surface tension behavior of human biological fluids will provide additional useful information in medical practice.

Smart and green interfaces: from single bubbles/drops to industrial environmental and biomedical applications

Interfaces can be called Smart and Green (S&G) when tailored such that the required technologies can be implemented with high efficiency, adaptability and selectivity. At the same time they also have to be eco-friendly, i.e. products must be biodegradable, reusable or simply more durable. Bubble and drop interfaces are in many of these smart technologies the fundamental entities and help develop smart products of the everyday life. Significant improvements of these processes and products can be achieved by implementing and manipulating specific properties of these interfaces in a simple and smart way, in order to accomplish specific tasks. The severe environmental issues require in addition attributing eco-friendly features to these interfaces, by incorporating innovative, or, sometimes, recycle materials and conceiving new production processes which minimize the use of natural resources and energy. Such concept can be extended to include important societal challenges related to support a sustainable development and a healthy population. The achievement of such ambitious targets requires the technology research to be supported by a robust development of theoretical and experimental tools, needed to understand in more details the behavior of complex interfaces. A wide but not exhaustive review of recent work concerned with green and smart interfaces is presented, addressing different scientific and technological fields. The presented approaches reveal a huge potential in relation to various technological fields, such as nanotechnologies, biotechnologies, medical diagnostics, and new or improved materials.
