Anti-adhesion and antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles supported on graphene oxide sheets

Bacteria-Derived Cellulose Membranes Modified with Graphene Oxide-Silver Nanoparticles for Accelerating Wound Healing

This study reports on the modification of bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes produced by static fermentation of Komagataeibacter xylinus bacterial strains with graphene oxide-silver nanoparticles (GO-Ag) to yield skin wound dressings with improved antibacterial properties. The GO-Ag sheets were synthesized through chemical reduction with sodium citrate and were utilized to functionalize the BC membranes (BC/GO-Ag). The BC/GO-Ag composites were characterized to determine their surface charge, morphology, exudate absorption, antimicrobial activity, and cytotoxicity by using fibroblast cells. The antimicrobial activity of the wound dressings was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results indicate that the BC/GO-Ag dressings can inhibit ∼70% of E. coli cells. Our findings also revealed that the porous BC/GO-Ag antimicrobial dressings can efficiently retain 94% of exudate absorption after exposure to simulated body fluid (SBF) for 24 h. These results suggest that the dressings could absorb excess exudate from the wound during clinical application, maintaining adequate moisture, and promoting the proliferation of epithelial cells. The BC/GO-Ag hybrid materials exhibited excellent mechanical flexibility and low cytotoxicity to fibroblast cells, making excellent wound dressings able to control bacterial infectious processes and promote the fast healing of dermal lesions.

Carbon-based materials for water disinfection and heavy metals removal

The presence of heavy metals and/or harmful bacteria in drinking water represents significant risks to human health. This study aimed to develop a low-cost water treatment technology using synthesized nanocomposites with metal nanoparticles supported on activated carbon (AC) for bacteria and heavy metal removal. In addition, the performance of the developed nanomaterials was compared with that of commercial materials - carbon fibers of three different typologies. The chemical and textural properties of all tested materials were characterized. To simulate a technology to be applied in a water outlet point, removal tests were carried out in a continuous system using suspensions of Escherichia coli and/or Staphylococcus aureus, wherein the contact time with the two phases was minimal (1 min). The obtained results revealed that iron and copper oxides supported on AC with a calcination treatment (CuFeO/AC-C) was the nanocomposite with the best performance, achieving a 6 log reduction for both bacteria in the same suspension up to 9 h operation. A mix of bacteria and heavy metals, simulating a real water, was treated with CuFeO/AC-C obtaining a 6 log reduction of bacteria, a Pb2+ removal >99.9% and Cd2+ removal between 97 and 98% over 180 passage times.

Engineering Bacterial Biofilm Development and Structure via Regulation of Silver Nanoparticle Density in Graphene Oxide Composite Coating

Graphene-based composites have shown significant potential in the treatment of biofilm infections in clinical settings due to their exceptional antimicrobial properties and specific mechanisms. Nevertheless, a comprehensive understanding of the influence exerted by nanoparticles embedded in the composites on the development and structure of biofilms is still lacking. Here, we fabricate different graphene oxide-silver nanoparticle (GAg) composite-modified substrates (GAgS) with varying densities of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and investigate their effects on planktonic bacterial adhesion, subsequent biofilm formation, and mature biofilm structure. Our findings indicate that the initial attachment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells during biofilm formation is determined by the density of AgNPs on the GAgS surface. In contrast, the subsequent transition from adherent bacteria to the biofilm is determined by GAgS's synergistic antimicrobial effect. There exists a threshold for the inhibitory performance of GAgS, where the 20 μg/cm2 GAg composite completely prevents biofilm formation; below this concentration, GAgS delays the development of the biofilm and causes structural changes in the mature biofilm with enhanced bacterial growth and increased production of extracellular polymeric substance. More importantly, GAgS have minimal impact on mammalian cell morphology and proliferation while not inducing hemolysis in red blood cells. These results suggest that GAg composites hold promise as a therapeutic approach for addressing medical devices and implant-associated biofilm infections.

Development of PDMS/TiO2/Ag3PO4 antibacterial coating on 316L/PDMS implants: Evaluation of superhydrophobicity, bio-corrosion, mechanical behaviour, surface nanostructure and chemistry

Nanocomposite coatings based on polydimethylsiloxane were developed by adding silver phosphate and titania nanoparticles with a PDMS pre-layer for 316L stainless steel. FTIR spectra and XRD patterns confirmed the synthesis of TiO2 and Ag3PO4 nanoparticles and nanocomposite coating. FESM and AFM images show that with the increase of Ag3PO4 nanoparticles, the roughness of coatings increased (Ra and Rq for adding 7 wt% of Ag3PO4 coating was 29 and 293 nm). The wettability results demonstrated that the presence of 7 wt% Ag3PO4 nanoparticles in the coating has the highest water contact angle (152 °). Nano-scratch results proved that creating a pre-layer of PDMS can increase the scratch resistance of PDMS + TiO2+Ag3PO4 nanocomposite coating (displacement and scratch coefficient were 408 nm and 0.07μΝ-1/2 with the pre-layer). Corrosion current density of 316lSS with PDMS + TiO2+Ag3PO4 coating was 0.00045 μA/cm2, while for 316LSS with pure PDMS coating was 0.00114 μA/cm2 at 37 °C in PBS solution. The Nyquist curves showed the diameter of the semicircle for the nanocomposite coating was larger than pure PDMS coating, which indicates the higher corrosion resistance of the nanocomposite coating (5.98 × 107 Ω). By increasing Ag3PO4 nanoparticles from 1 to 7 wt%, the number of E. coli bacteria in contact with the nanocomposite decreased significantly from 580000 to 31000 CFU/cm2. In the disk diffusion test, the largest inhibition zone was related to the nanocomposite coating with the addition of 7 wt% Ag3PO4 (23 mm). Therefore, the PDMS + TiO2+Ag3PO4 nanocomposite coating has improved properties such as superhydrophobicity, advanced mechanical behavior, bio-corrosion resistance, and antibacterial activity.

Comparative study between three carbonaceous nanoblades and nanodarts for antimicrobial applications

The design of nanostructured materials occupies a privileged position in the development and management of affordable and effective technology in the antibacterial sector. Here, we discuss the antimicrobial properties of three carbonaceous nanoblades and nanodarts materials of graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), and single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) that have a mechano-bactericidal effect, and the ability to piercing or slicing bacterial membranes. To demonstrate the significance of size, morphology and composition on the antibacterial activity mechanism, the designed nanomaterials have been characterized. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), standard agar well diffusion, and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to evaluate the antibacterial activity of GO, RGO, and SWCNTs. Based on the evidence obtained, the three carbonaceous materials exhibit activity against all microbial strains tested by completely encapsulating bacterial cells and causing morphological disruption by degrading the microbial cell membrane in the order of RGO > GO > SWCNTs. Because of the external cell wall structure and outer membrane proteins, the synthesized carbonaceous nanomaterials exhibited higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacterial strains than Gram-negative and fungal microorganisms. RGO had the lowest MIC values (0.062, 0.125, and 0.25 mg/mL against B. subtilis, S. aureus, and E. coli, respectively), as well as minimum fungal concentrations (0.5 mg/mL for both A. fumigatus and C. albicans). At 12 hr, the cell viability values against tested microbial strains were completely suppressed. Cell lysis and death occurred as a result of severe membrane damage caused by microorganisms perched on RGO nanoblades. Our work gives an insight into the design of effective graphene-based antimicrobial materials for water treatment and remediation.

Thermal and biological properties of novel sodium carboxymethylcellulose-PPFMA nanocomposites containing biosynthesized Ag-ZnO hybrid filler

The aim of this study was to produce new nanocomposites with antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer properties that can be used in biomedical research based on carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) biopolymer. First, poly(2-oxo-2-(pentafluorophenoxy)ethyl-2-methylprop-2-enoate) (PPFMA) was synthesized and characterized by FTIR and NMR techniques. It was then blended with NaCMC by in situ/hydrothermal method to produce a semi-synthetic functional material. Changes in the FTIR data of the blend and the single Tg value from DSC confirmed the compatibility of the blend. To enhance the thermal and biological properties of the NaCMC-PPFMA blend, biosynthesized Ag-ZnONPs were hydrothermally incorporated into the blend at different weight ratios. The prepared materials were characterized by SEM, EDX, TEM, XRD and FTIR. The thermal stability of the materials was determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and glass transition temperatures (Tg) was determined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The oxidant, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic properties of PPFMA, Ag-ZnONPs, PPFMA-NaCMC blend, and nanocomposites were investigated in detail. The total oxidant state (TOS) value of the NaCMC-PPFMA blend, which was 0.72 μmol equivalent H2O2/L, increased to 7.2-10.4 μmol equivalent H2O2/L with the addition of Ag-ZnONPs. Ag-ZnONPs decreased total antioxidant state (TAS) levels of the nanocomposites while increasing their oxidant activity. Therefore, an increase in the antimicrobial activity of the nanocomposites was observed. Adding Ag-ZnONPs to the NaCMC-PPFMA blend increased the thermal stability by 22 °C and the Tg value by 9 °C. Finally, the potential of Ag-ZnONPs containing nanocomposites in wound healing therapies was examined. The findings suggest that nanocomposites prepared by incorporating Ag-ZnONPs into the semi-synthetic NaCMC-PPFMA blend can be a source of bio-safe raw materials and can be used as potential wound healers.

Molecularly imprinted nanoparticles doped graphene oxide based electrochemical platform for highly sensitive and selective detection of L-tyrosine

A highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor was developed using a surface modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) through molecularly imprinted polymerization on the surface of vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) coated magnetic nanoparticle (Fe3O4) decorated silver nanoparticles incorporated graphene oxide, GO (VTMS-Fe3O4/AgGO) for L- Tyrosine (Tyr) detection. A molecular imprinting technique based on free radical polymerization was applied to synthesize molecularly imprinted Methacrylic acid (MAA) and Acrylamide (AA) grafted VTMS-Fe3O4/AgGO polymer (MAA/AA-g- VTMS-Fe3O4/AgGO) designated as MIP and non-imprinted polymer (NIP). The structure and morphology of the prepared polymers were FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM and VSM. MIP and NIP were chosen for modifying the GCE surface by drop casting process to construct the sensors and their electrochemical properties were characterized via EIS and CV. Compared with NIP/GCE sensor, MIP /GCE sensor exhibits excellent sensing response towards Tyr with a wide linear range of 0.25 × 10-13 M to 0.10 × 10-3 M and the limit of detection and limit of quantification as 0.15 × 10-13 M and 0.50 × 10-13 M, respectively with R2 value of 0.9934 by DPV technique. Moreover, MIP/GCE sensor exhibits long-time storage, excellent selectivity and good stability in multiple cycle usage. The practical applicability of MIP/GCE sensor was tested in human blood serum sample. The recovery percentage was obtained between 98.8% and 106.0% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) between 1.01% and 1.59%. Results of the investigations revealed the clinical applicability of the MIP/GCE sensor.

Graphene as a rational interface for enhanced adsorption of microcystin-LR from water

Cyanotoxins such as microcystin-LR (MC-LR) represent a global environmental threat to ecosystems and drinking water supplies. The study investigated the direct use of graphene as a rational interface for removal of MC-LR via interactions with the aromatic ring of the ADDA1 chain of MC-LR and the sp2 hybridized carbon network of graphene. Intra-particle diffusion model fit indicated the high mesoporosity of graphene provided significant enhancements to both adsorption capacities and kinetics when benchmarked against microporous granular activated carbon (GAC). Graphene showed superior MC-LR adsorption capacity of 75.4 mg/g (Freundlich model) compared to 0.982 mg/g (Langmuir model) for GAC. Sorption kinetic studies showed graphene adsorbs 99% of MC-LR in 30 min, compared to zero removal for GAC after 24 hr using the same MC-LR concentration. Density functional theory (DFT), calculations showed that postulated π-based interactions align well with the NMR-based experimental work used to probe primary interactions between graphene and MC-LR adduct. This study proved that π-interactions between the aromatic ring on MC-LR and graphene sp2 orbitals are a dominant interaction. With rapid kinetics and adsorption capacities much higher than GAC, it is anticipated that graphene will offer a novel molecular approach for removal of toxins and emerging contaminants with aromatic systems.

3D printable, thermo-responsive, self-healing, graphene oxide containing self-assembled hydrogels formed from block copolymer wormlike micelles

Graphene oxide (GO) containing block copolymer nanocomposite hydrogels formed from poly(glycerol monomethacrylate-block-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PGMA-PHPMA) wormlike micelles were prepared by either mixing GO and copolymer at low temperature or via in situ reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerisation-induced self-assembly (PISA) of HPMA in the presence of a PGMA macromolecular chain-transfer agent and GO flakes. Hydrogels containing 15-25% w/w copolymer and 0 and 8% w/w GO, based on copolymer, were investigated and the maximum gel strength measured was ∼33 kPa for a 25% w/w copolymer gel prepared by in situ polymerisation and containing 2% w/w GO based on copolymer. This gel strength represents a fifteen-fold increase over the same copolymer gel without the addition of GO. The nanocomposite gels were found to recover efficiently after the application of high shear, with up to 98% healing efficiency within seconds. These gels are also 3D printable, self-healing, adhesive and temperature responsive on cooling and re-heating. The observed properties were both GO and copolymer concentration dependent, and tensile testing demonstrated that the nanocomposite gels had higher moduli, elongation at break and toughness than gels prepared without GO.

Management and Mitigation of Vibriosis in Aquaculture: Nanoparticles as Promising Alternatives

Vibriosis is one of the most common diseases in marine aquaculture, caused by bacteria belonging to the genus Vibrio, that has been affecting many species of economically significant aquatic organisms around the world. The prevention of vibriosis in aquaculture is difficult, and the various treatments for vibriosis have their limitations. Therefore, there is an imperative need to find new alternatives. This review is based on the studies on vibriosis, specifically on the various treatments and their limitations, as well as the application of nanoparticles in aquaculture. One of the promising nanoparticles is graphene oxide (GO), which has been used in various applications, particularly in biological applications such as biosensors, drug delivery, and potential treatment for infectious diseases. GO has been shown to have anti-bacterial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, but no research has been published that emphasizes its impact on Vibrio spp. The review aims to explore the potential use of GO for treatment against vibriosis.

Antimicrobial and Apoptotic Efficacy of Plant-Mediated Silver Nanoparticles

Phytogenically synthesised nanoparticle (NP)-based drug delivery systems have promising potential in the field of biopharmaceuticals. From the point of view of biomedical applications, such systems offer the small size, high surface area, and possible synergistic effects of NPs with embedded biomolecules. This article describes the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) using extracts from the flowers and leaves of tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.), which is known as a remedy for many health problems, including cancer. The reducing power of the extracts was confirmed by total phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant tests. The Ag-NPs were characterised by various analytical techniques including UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and a dynamic light scattering (DLS) system. The obtained Ag-NPs showed higher cytotoxic activity than the initial extracts against both human cervical cancer cell lines HeLa (ATCC CCL-2) and human melanoma cell lines A375 and SK-MEL-3 by MTT assay. However, the high toxicity to Vero cell culture (ATCC CCL-81) and human fibroblast cell line WS-1 rules out the possibility of their use as anticancer agents. The plant-mediated Ag-NPs were mostly bactericidal against tested strains with MBC/MIC index ≤4. Antifungal bioactivity (C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. parapsilosis) was not observed for aqueous extracts (MIC > 8000 mg L^-1), but Ag-NPs synthesised using both the flowers and leaves of tansy were very potent against Candida spp., with MIC 15.6 and 7.8 µg mL^-1, respectively.

Antioxidation Effect of Graphene Oxide on Silver Nanoparticles and Its Use in Antibacterial Applications

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have drawn great attention due to their outstanding antibacterial effect in a wide range of applications, such as biomass packaging materials, wound dressings, flexible sensors, etc. However, the oxidation of AgNPs limits the antibacterial effect. Firstly, the effects of pretreatment methods on the antibacterial property of AgNPs were investigated by the shake flask method and agar diffusion plate method. Secondly, graphene oxide/silver nanoparticle (GO/AgNPs) nanocomposite prepared by an in-situ growth method was used as antibacterial filler for polyacrylate emulsion via a blending method. The antibacterial mechanism of GO/AgNPs was revealed by comparing the actual contents of oxygen with the theoretically calculated contents of oxygen. Finally, the polyacrylate/graphene oxide/silver nanoparticles (PA/GO/AgNPs) composite emulsion was applied onto a leather surface using a layer-by-layer spraying method to improve the leather's antibacterial properties. The results showed that ultraviolet irradiation could better maintain the antibacterial property of AgNPs, while GO could improve the dispersibility of AgNPs and prevent their oxidation. The leather finished with the PA/GO/AgNPs-2 wt% composite emulsion showed the highest bacteriostatic rate of 74%, demonstrating its great potential in the application of antibacterial leather products.

Synthesis, Antimicrobial, and Antibiofilm Activities of Some Novel 7-Methoxyquinoline Derivatives Bearing Sulfonamide Moiety against Urinary Tract Infection-Causing Pathogenic Microbes

A new series of 4-((7-methoxyquinolin-4-yl) amino)-N-(substituted) benzenesulfonamide 3(a-s) was synthesized via the reaction of 4-chloro-7-methoxyquinoline 1 with various sulfa drugs. The structural elucidation was verified based on spectroscopic data analysis. All the target compounds were screened for their antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and unicellular fungi. The results revealed that compound 3l has the highest effect on most tested bacterial and unicellular fungal strains. The highest effect of compound 3l was observed against E. coli and C. albicans with MIC = 7.812 and 31.125 µg/mL, respectively. Compounds 3c and 3d showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, but the activity was lower than that of 3l. The antibiofilm activity of compound 3l was measured against different pathogenic microbes isolated from the urinary tract. Compound 3l could achieve biofilm extension at its adhesion strength. After adding 10.0 µg/mL of compound 3l, the highest percentage was 94.60% for E. coli, 91.74% for P. aeruginosa, and 98.03% for C. neoformans. Moreover, in the protein leakage assay, the quantity of cellular protein discharged from E. coli was 180.25 µg/mL after treatment with 1.0 mg/mL of compound 3l, which explains the creation of holes in the cell membrane of E. coli and proves compound 3l's antibacterial and antibiofilm properties. Additionally, in silico ADME prediction analyses of compounds 3c, 3d, and 3l revealed promising results, indicating the presence of drug-like properties.

Ag Thin Films from Pelargonium Zonale Leaves via Green Chemistry

Ag thin films were successfully produced via a green chemistry method from silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) obtained from reacting an extract of Pelargonium Zonale leaves with silver nitrate. The ions of silver nitrate were reduced to silver atoms by reducing stabilizer-capping compounds contained in the extract of Pelargonium Zonale leaves. The obtained atoms nucleate in small clusters that grew into nanoparticles and finally, they formed a homogeneous silver thin film on a glass substrate. The nanostructured thin films obtained were characterized by profilometry, X Ray Diffraction, Atomic Force Electronic Microscopy, UV-Vis, and Transmission Electron Microscopy.

Synergetic reinforcing effect of graphene oxide and nanosilver on carboxymethyl cellulose/sodium alginate nanocomposite films: Assessment of physicochemical and antibacterial properties

Incorporating single or combined nanofillers in polymeric matrices is a promising approach for developing antimicrobial materials for applications in wound healing and packaging etc. This study reports a facile fabrication of antimicrobial nanocomposite films using biocompatible polymers sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sodium alginate (SA) reinforced with nanosilver (Ag) and graphene oxide (GO) using the solvent casting approach. Eco-friendly synthesis of Ag nanoparticles within a size range of 20-30 nm was carried out within the polymeric solution. GO was introduced into the CMC/SA/Ag solution in different weight percentages. The films were characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, Raman, XRD, FE-SEM, EDAX, and TEM. The results indicated the enhanced thermal and mechanical performance of CMC/SA/Ag-GO nanocomposites with increased GO weight %. The antibacterial efficacy of the fabricated films was evaluated on Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The CMC/SA/Ag-GO2% nanocomposite exhibited the highest zone of inhibition of 21.30 ± 0.70 mm against E. coli and 18.00 ± 1.00 mm against S. aureus. The CMC/SA/Ag-GO nanocomposites exhibited excellent antibacterial activity as compared to CMC/SA and CMC/SA-Ag due to the synergetic bacterial growth inhibition activities of the GO and Ag. The cytotoxic activity of the prepared nanocomposite films was also assessed to investigate their biocompatibility.

High-efficiency degradation catalytic performance of a novel Angelica sinensis polysaccharide-silver nanomaterial for dyes by ultrasonic cavitation

Currently, the polluted wastewater discharged by industry accounts for the major part of polluted bodies of water. As one of the industrial wastewaters, dye wastewater is characterized by high toxicity, wide pollution, and difficulty in decolorization degradation. In this paper, a novel composite nanomaterial catalyst of silver was prepared by using Angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP) as a reducing and stabilizing agent. And the optimum reaction conditions explored are V_AgNO3 = 5 mL (300 mM) and v_ASP = 7% (w/v) for 6 h at 90 °C. In addition, the ASP-Ag nanocatalyst was characterized by several techniques. The results demonstrated that ASP-Ag nanoparticles were successfully synthesized. Degradation rate, which provides a numerical visualization of the percentage reduction in pollutant concentration. With the wrapping of ASP, the ultrasonic catalytic degradation rates of different organic dyes including rhodamine B (RB), methylene blue (MB), and methyl orange (MO) were from 88.2%, 88.7%, and 85.2% to 96.1%, 95.2% and 93.5% at room temperature, respectively. After the experiments, when c_dyes = 10 mg/L, the highest degradation rate can be observed under c_APS-AgNPs = 10 mg/L with the most powerful cavitation frequency f = 59 kHz. The effect of ultrasonic frequency on the acoustic pressure distribution in the reactor was investigated by using COMSOL Multiphysis^@ software to propose the mechanism of ultrasonic degradation and the mechanism was confirmed by OH radical trapping experiments. It indicates that OH produced by the ultrasonic cavitation effect plays a determinant role in the degradation. And then, the intermediate products of the dye degradation process were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the possible degradation processes of dyes were proposed. The resulting products of degradation are SO₄^2-, NH₄⁺, NO₃^-, N₂, CO₂ and H₂O. Finally, the recycling degradation experiments showed that catalyst maintains a high degradation rate within reusing 5 cycles. Thus, this catalyst is highly efficient and recyclable.

An Overview on Exploitation of Graphene-Based Membranes: From Water Treatment to Medical Industry, Including Recent Fighting against COVID-19

Graphene and its derivatives have lately been the subject of increased attention for different environmental applications of membrane technology such as water treatment and air filtration, exploiting their antimicrobial and antiviral activity. They are interesting candidates as membrane materials for their outstanding mechanical and chemical stability and for their thin two-dimensional (2D) nanostructure with potential pore engineering for advanced separation. All these applications have evolved and diversified from discovery to today, and now graphene and graphene derivatives also offer fascinating opportunities for the fight against infective diseases such as COVID-19 thanks to their antimicrobial and antiviral properties. This paper presents an overview of graphene-based 2D materials, their preparation and use as membrane material for applications in water treatment and in respiratory protection devices.

Green synthesis of graphene-based metal nanocomposite for electro and photocatalytic activity; recent advancement and future prospective

The presence of pollutants in waste water is a demanding problem for human health. Investigations have been allocated to study the adsorptive behavior of graphene-based materials to remove pollutants from wastewater. Graphene (GO) due to its hydrophilicity, high surface area, and oxygenated functional groups, is an effective adsorbent for the removal of dyes and heavy metals from water. The disclosure of green synthesis opened the gateway for the economic productive methods. This article reveals the fabrication of graphene-based composite from aloe vera extract using a green method. The proposed mechanism of GO reduction via plant extract has also been mentioned in this work. The mechanism associated with the removal of dyes and heavy metals by graphene-based adsorbents and absorptive capacities of heavy metals has been discussed in detail. The toxicity of heavy metals has also been mentioned here. The Polyaromatic resonating system of GO develops significant π-π interactions with dyes whose base form comprises principally oxygenated functional groups. This review article illustrates a literature survey by classifying graphene-based composite with a global market value from 2010 to 2025 and also depicts a comparative study between green and chemical reduction methods. It presents state of art for the fabrication of GO with novel adsorbents such as metal, polymer, metal oxide and elastomers-based nanocomposites for the removal of pollutants. The current progress in the applications of graphene-based composites in antimicrobial, anticancer, drug delivery, and removal of dyes with photocatalytic efficacy of 73% is explored in this work. It gives a coherent overview of the green synthesis of graphene-based composite, various prospective for the fabrication of graphene, and their biotoxicity.

Nanodelivery of antiretroviral drugs to nervous tissues

Despite the development of effective combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), the neurocognitive impairments associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remain challenging. The presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCFB) impedes the adequate penetration of certain antiretroviral drugs into the brain. In addition, reports have shown that some antiretroviral drugs cause neurotoxicity resulting from their interaction with nervous tissues due to long-term systemic exposure. Therefore, the research into the effective therapeutic modality that would cater for the HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) and ART toxicity is now receiving broad research attention. Thus, this review explores the latest information in managing HAND using a nanoparticle drug delivery system (NDDS). We discussed the neurotoxicity profile of various approved ART. Also, we explained the applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in medicine, their different synthesis methods and their interaction with nervous tissues. Lastly, while proposing AgNPs as useful nanoparticles in properly delivering ART to enhance effectiveness and minimize neurocognitive disorders, we hypothesize that the perceived toxicity of AgNPs could be minimized by taking appropriate precautions. One such precaution is using appropriate reducing and stabilizing agents such as trisodium citrate to reduce silver ion Ag + to ground state Ag0 during the synthesis. Also, the usage of medium-sized, spherical-shaped AgNPs is encouraged in AgNPs-based drug delivery to the brain due to their ability to deliver therapeutic agents across BBB. In addition, characterization and functionalization of the synthesized AgNPs are required during the drug delivery approach. Putting all these factors in place would minimize toxicity and enhance the usage of AgNPs in delivering therapeutic agents across the BBB to the targeted brain tissue and could cater for the HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders and neurotoxic effects of antiretroviral drugs (ARDs).

Functionalization of TiO2 for Better Performance as Orthopedic Implants

This review mainly focuses on the surface functionalization approaches of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) to prevent bacterial infections and facilitate osteointegration simultaneously for titanium (Ti)-based orthopedic implants. Infection is one of the major causes of implant failure. Meanwhile, it is also critical for the bone-forming cells to integrate with the implant surface. TiO₂ is the native oxide layer of Ti which has good biocompatibility as well as enriched physical, chemical, electronic, and photocatalytic properties. The formed nanostructures during fabrication and the enriched properties of TiO₂ have enabled various functionalization methods to combat the micro-organisms and enhance the osteogenesis of Ti implants. This review encompasses the various modifications of TiO₂ in aspects of topology, drug loading, and element incorporation, as well as the most recently developed electron transfer and electrical tuning approaches. Taken together, these approaches can endow Ti implants with better bactericidal and osteogenic abilities via the functionalization of TiO₂.

Antimicrobial, and Antibiofilm Activities of Silver Doped Hydroxyapatite: A Novel Bioceramic Material for Dental Filling

Even though hydroxyapatite (HA) is the most common biocompatible material; it has limited antibacterial resistance. HA experiences a tailor-made structure depending on the desired applications. In this regard, silver (Ag) is of particular interest to inhibit wide spectrum of pathogenic bacteria and other microorganisms. Silver doped hydroxyapatite (Ag-HA) was developed via wet co-precipitation with subsequent hydrothermal processing to hinder the growth and multiplication of pathogenic microbes. Ag-HA demonstrated mono-dispersed nano-rods of 70 nm length and 7 nm diameters. Even though silver dopant induced stresses within the crystal lattice; Ag-HA maintained the crystallographic structure of HA with no change. Ag-HA nanocomposite demonstrated Ca/P value of 1.238 compared with 1.402 for virgin HA via XPS spectroscopy. The reduction of Ca/P value was correlated to the partial replacement of Ca+2 with Ag+1; Silver content was reported to be of 1 atomic %. Elemental mapping using EDAX confirmed uniform dispersion of silver ion within HA lattice. Antimicrobial results indicated that, Ag-HA nanocomposite demonstrated the most potent zone of inhibition (ZOI) against Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. Antibiofilm results indicated that Ag-HA nanocomposite at 10.0 µg/mL, experienced the highest percentage for S. aureus and C. albicans of 96.09%, and 77.77%, respectively. Ag-HA nanocomposite demonstrated an excellent disinfectant agent once it had excited by UV light. In growth curve assay, the OD600 value of Ag- HA were lower, showing the repression impact on the growth of S. aureus. It was observed that the quantity of cellular protein discharged from S. aureus is directly proportional to the concentration of Ag-HA, which proves the antibacterial characteristics of the Ag-HA nanocomposite, and explains the creation of holes in the bacterial membrane producing the oozing out of the proteins from the S. aureus cytoplasm. Controlling silver release from antibacterial surface coatings on stainless steel for biofouling control

This study focuses on the in-situ nucleation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on stainless steel (SS) to provide a localized antibacterial action for biofouling control during space missions. Since AgNPs rapidly dissolve in water, partial passivation of AgNPs was provided to slow down silver release and extend the lifetime of the antibacterial coating. Two different passivation approaches, based on the formation of low solubility silver sulfide (Ag₂S) or silver bromide (AgBr) shells, were compared to identify the optimal passivation for biofouling control. Highest bacterial inactivation (up to 75%) occurred with sulfidized AgNPs as opposed to bromidized (up to 50%) NPs. The optimal passivation treatment for biofouling control was found at 10^-5 M Na₂S (for Ag₂S) and 10^-3 M NaBr (for AgBr) concentrations. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses confirmed the presence of AgNPs on AgBr and Ag₂S-coated samples. Further investigation revealed that compared to pristine AgNPs, Ag release from both sulfidized and bromidized NPs was significantly lower (16% vs 6% or less). Overall, both sulfidized and bromidized AgNPs were effective at controlling biofilm formation; however, sulfidized NPs exhibited the maximum antibacterial activity, making it the preferable passivation strategy for AgNPs on SS surfaces.

Structural Evolution of Palygorskite as the Nanocarrier of Silver Nanoparticles for Improving Antibacterial Activity

The carrier performance of palygorskite (Pal) can be significantly affected by its structure, morphology, and activity, which was regulated by controlling the dissolution degree of the metal-oxygen octahedron of raw Pal (RPal) under the action of oxalic acid (OA) in this study. The RPal and OA-leached RPal (OPal) then served as supports for immobilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to form RPal/AgNPs and OPal/AgNPs antibacterial nanocomposites. The structural and morphological characterizations were used to confirm the dispersion uniformity of AgNPs on the RPal and OPal nanorods, and antibacterial experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of as-prepared composites and also investigate their antibacterial mechanism. The results showed that OPal-48h (OA leaching for 48 h) loaded with AgNPs (OPal-48h/AgNPs) possesses the most excellent and broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, where its minimum inhibitory concentration values against E. coli, S. aureus, ESBL-E. coli, and MRSA reached 0.25, 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 mg/mL, respectively, which are mainly attributed to the optimal balance between surface activity and structural stability of OPal-48h that maximally increased its dispersibility and active sites, therefore contributing to the in situ formation of monodisperse AgNPs on the nanorods of OPal-48h.

Cytotoxic Potential of Bio-Silica Conjugate with Different Sizes of Silver Nanoparticles for Cancer Cell Death

Well-defined silver nanoparticles were doped into bio-based amorphous silica (Ag-b-SiO₂) with different silver contents (from 2 to 20 wt%) by a solvent-free procedure. The four as-synthetized samples were hydrogenated at 300 °C to ensure the formation of zero-valent Ag nanoparticles. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis, N₂ sorption measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The characterization data confirmed the formation of well-defined zero-valent silver nanoparticles in the range of 3-10 nm in the low-loading samples, while in high-loading samples, bulky particles of silver in the range of 200-500 nm were formed. The in vitro cytotoxic activities of the Ag-b-SiO₂ samples were tested against the tumor cell lines of breast (MCF-7), liver (HepG2), and colon (HCT 116) over a concentration range of 0.01 to 1000 g. The prepared samples exhibited a wide range of cytotoxic activities against cancer cells. An inverse relationship was observed between the silver nanoparticles' size and the cytotoxic activity, while a direct relationship between the silver nanoparticles' size and the apoptotic cell death was noticed.

Recent advances in carbon-based nanomaterials for combating bacterial biofilm-associated infections

The prevalence of bacterial pathogens among humans has increased rapidly and poses a great threat to health. Two-thirds of bacterial infections are associated with biofilms. Recently, nanomaterials have emerged as anti-biofilm agents due to their enormous potential for combating biofilm-associated infections and infectious disease management. Among these, relatively high biocompatibility and unique physicochemical properties of carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) have attracted wide attention. This review presented the current advances in anti-biofilm CBNs. Different kinds of CBNs and their physicochemical characteristics were introduced first. Then, the various potential mechanisms underlying the action of anti-biofilm CBNs during different stages were discussed, including anti-biofouling activity, inhibition of quorum sensing, photothermal/photocatalytic inactivation, oxidative stress, and electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. In particular, the review focused on the pivotal role played by CBNs as anti-biofilm agents and delivery vehicles. Finally, it described the challenges and outlook for the development of more efficient and bio-safer anti-biofilm CBNs.

Potential Impact of Reduced Graphene Oxide Incorporated Metal Oxide Nanocomposites as Antimicrobial, and Antibiofilm Agents Against Pathogenic Microbes: Bacterial Protein Leakage Reaction Mechanism

In the current study, nanocomposites-based reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and metal oxides (AgO, NiO, and ZnO) were fabricated. The starting precursor and RGO were characterized by XRD, Raman, SEM, and HRTEM, while SEM and EDX mapping validated the synthesized nanocomposites. In addition, ZOI, MIC, antibiofilm, and growth curve were tested. The antimicrobial reaction mechanism was investigated by protein leakage assay and SEM imaging. Results revealed that all synthesized nanocomposites (RGO-AgO, RGO-NiO, and RGO-ZnO) have outstanding antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria and unicellular fungi. Moreover, RGO-AgO, RGO-NiO, and RGO-ZnO nanocomposites exhibited an antibiofilm activity percentage against Staphylococcus aureus (91.72%), Candida albicans  (91.17%), and Escherichia coli (90.36%). The SEM analysis of S. aureus after RGO-AgO treatment indicated morphological differences, including the whole lysis of the outer surface supported by deformations of the bacterial cells. It was observed that the quantity of cellular protein leakage from S. aureus is directly proportional to the concentration of RGO-AgO, RGO-NiO, and RGO-ZnO nanocomposites and found to be 260.25 µg/mL, 110.55 µg/mL, and 99.90 µg/mL, respectively. The prepared nanocomposites promise to treat resistant microbes as a new strategy for managing infectious diseases.

Progress and prospects of applying carbon-based materials (and nanomaterials) to accelerate anaerobic bioprocesses for the removal of micropollutants

Carbon-based materials (CBM), including activated carbon (AC), activated fibres (ACF), biochar (BC), nanotubes (CNT), carbon xenogels (CX) and graphene nanosheets (GNS), possess unique properties such as high surface area, sorption and catalytic characteristics, making them very versatile for many applications in environmental remediation. They are powerful redox mediators (RM) in anaerobic processes, accelerating the rates and extending the level of the reduction of pollutants and, consequently, affecting positively the global efficiency of their partial or total removal. The extraordinary conductive properties of CBM, and the possibility of tailoring their surface to address specific pollutants, make them promising as catalysts in the treatment of effluents containing diverse pollutants. CBM can be combined with magnetic nanoparticles (MNM) assembling catalytic and magnetic properties in a single composite (C@MNM), allowing their recovery and reuse after the treatment process. Furthermore, these composites have demonstrated extraordinary catalytic properties. Evaluation of the toxicological and environmental impact of direct and indirect exposure to nanomaterials is an important issue that must be considered when nanomaterials are applied. Though the chemical composition, size and physical characteristics may contribute to toxicological effects, the potential toxic impact of using CBM is not completely clear and is not always assessed. This review gives an overview of the current research on the application of CBM and C@MNM in bioremediation and on the possible environmental impact and toxicity.

Recent Advances and Mechanistic Insights into Antibacterial Activity, Antibiofilm Activity, and Cytotoxicity of Silver Nanoparticles

The substantial increase in multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogenic bacteria is a major threat to global health. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported possibilities of greater deaths due to bacterial infections than cancer. Nanomaterials, especially small-sized (size ≤10 nm) silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), can be employed to combat these deadly bacterial diseases. However, high reactivity, instability, susceptibility to fast oxidation, and cytotoxicity remain crucial shortcomings for their uptake and clinical application. In this review, we discuss various AgNPs-based approaches to eradicate bacterial infections and provide comprehensive mechanistic insights and recent advances in antibacterial activity, antibiofilm activity, and cytotoxicity (both in vitro and in vivo) of AgNPs. The mechanistic of antimicrobial activity involves four steps: (i) adhesion of AgNPs to cell wall/membrane and its disruption; (ii) intracellular penetration and damage; (iii) oxidative stress; and (iv) modulation of signal transduction pathways. Numerous factors affecting the bactericidal activity of AgNPs such as shape, size, crystallinity, pH, and surface coating/charge have also been described in detail. The review also sheds light on antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and the role of AgNPs versus Ag⁺ ions release in bactericidal activities. In addition, different methods of synthesis of AgNPs have been discussed in brief.

Recent Advances in Copper-Doped Titanium Implants

Titanium (Ti) and its alloys have been extensively used as implant materials in clinical practice due to their high corrosion resistance, light weight and excellent biocompatibility. However, the insufficient intrinsic osteogenic capacity of Ti and its alloys impedes bone repair and regeneration, and implant-related infection or inflammation remains the leading cause of implant failure. Bacterial infections or inflammatory diseases constitute severe threats to human health. The physicochemical properties of the material are critical to the success of clinical procedures, and the doping of Cu into Ti implants has been confirmed to be capable of enhancing the bone repair/regeneration, angiogenesis and antibacterial capability. This review outlines the recent advances in the design and preparation of Cu-doped Ti and Ti alloy implants, with a special focus on various methods, including plasma immersion implantation, magnetron sputtering, galvanic deposition, microarc oxidation and sol-gel synthesis. More importantly, the antibacterial and mechanical properties as well as the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of Cu-doped Ti implants from different methods are systematically reviewed, and their prospects and limitations are also discussed.

"Attacking-Attacking" Anti-biofouling Strategy Enabled by Cellulose Nanocrystals-Silver Materials

The development of high-performance anti-biofouling surfaces is paramount for controlling bacterial attachment and biofilm growth in biomedical devices, food packing, and filtration membranes. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), a carbon-nanotube-like nanomaterial, have emerged as renewable and sustainable antimicrobial agents. However, CNCs inactivate bacteria under contact-mediated mechanisms, limiting its antimicrobial property mostly to the attached bacteria. This study describes the combination of CNCs with silver nanoparticles (CNC/Ag) as a strategy to increase their toxicity and anti-biofouling performance. CNC/Ag-coated surfaces inactivated over 99% of the attached Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis cells compared to 66.9 and 32.9% reduction shown by the pristine CNC, respectively. CNC/Ag was also very toxic to planktonic cells, displaying minimal inhibitory of 25 and 100 μg/mL against B. subtilis and E. coli, respectively. CNC/Ag seems to inactivate bacteria through an "attacking-attacking" mechanism where CNCs and silver nanoparticles play different roles. CNCs can kill bacteria by piercing the cell membrane. This physical membrane stress-mediated mechanism is demonstrated as lipid vesicles release their encapsulated dye upon contact with CNCs. Once the cell membrane is punctured, silver ions can enter the cell passively and compromise the integrity of DNA and other organelles. Inside the cells, Ag⁺ may damage the cell membrane by selectively interacting with sulfur and nitrogen groups of enzymes and proteins or by harming DNA via accumulation of reactive oxygen species. Therefore, CNC/Ag toxicity seems to combine the puncturing effect of the needle-like CNC and the silver's ability to impair the cell membrane and DNA functionalities.

Graphene for Antimicrobial and Coating Application

Graphene is a versatile compound with several outstanding properties, providing a combination of impressive surface area, high strength, thermal and electrical properties, with a wide array of functionalization possibilities. This review aims to present an introduction of graphene and presents a comprehensive up-to-date review of graphene as an antimicrobial and coating application in medicine and dentistry. Available articles on graphene for biomedical applications were reviewed from January 1957 to August 2020) using MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect. The selected articles were included in this study. Extensive research on graphene in several fields exists. However, the available literature on graphene-based coatings in dentistry and medical implant technology is limited. Graphene exhibits high biocompatibility, corrosion prevention, antimicrobial properties to prevent the colonization of bacteria. Graphene coatings enhance adhesion of cells, osteogenic differentiation, and promote antibacterial activity to parts of titanium unaffected by the thermal treatment. Furthermore, the graphene layer can improve the surface properties of implants which can be used for biomedical applications. Hence, graphene and its derivatives may hold the key for the next revolution in dental and medical technology.

A comprehensive review on preparation, functionalization and recent applications of nanofiber membranes in wastewater treatment

The direct discharge of significant amounts of polluted water into water bodies causes adverse ecological and human health effects. This severe deterioration in water quality creates significant challenges to meet the growing demand for clean water. Therefore, the world urgently needs environmentally friendly advanced technology to overcome this global crisis. In this regard, nanofiber-based membrane filtration is a promising technique in wastewater remediation because of their huge surface area, extremely porous structure, amenable pore size/pore size distribution, variety of material choices, and flexibility to modification with other functional materials. However, despite their unique properties, fouling, poor mechanical properties, shrinkage, and deformation are major drawbacks of nanofiber membranes for treating wastewater. This review presents a comprehensive overview of nanofiber membranes' fabrication and function in water purification applications as well as providing novel approaches to overcoming/alleviating the mentioned disadvantages. The review first presents nanofiber membrane preparation methods, focusing on electrospinning as a versatile and viable technique alongside discussing the parameters controlling nanofiber morphology. Afterward, the functionalization of nanofiber membranes by combining them with other nanomaterials, such as metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, metal-organic frameworks, and biomolecules, were demonstrated and discussed. In addition, nanofiber membranes functionalized with microorganisms were highlighted. Finally, we introduced and discussed in detail the most relevant and recent advances in nanofiber applications in wastewater treatment in the context of removing different pollutants (e.g., heavy metals, nutrients, radioactive elements, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, dyes, and pesticides). Moreover, the promising antimicrobial ability of nanofiber membranes in removing microorganisms from wastewater has been fully underscored. We believe this comprehensive review could provide researchers with preliminary data and guide both researchers and producers engaged in the nanofiber membrane industry, letting them focus on the research gaps in wastewater treatment.

Extra-Low Dosage Graphene Oxide Cementitious Nanocomposites: A Nano- to Macroscale Approach

The impact of extra-low dosage (0.01% by weight of cement) Graphene Oxide (GO) on the properties of fresh and hardened nanocomposites was assessed. The use of a minimum amount of 2-D nanofiller would minimize costs and sustainability issues, therefore encouraging the market uptake of nanoengineered cement-based materials. GO was characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. GO consisted of stacked sheets up to 600 nm × 800 nm wide and 2 nm thick, oxygen content 31 at%. The impact of GO on the fresh admixtures was evaluated by rheology, flowability, and workability measurements. GO-modified samples were characterized by density measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, and compression and bending tests. Permeability was investigated using the boiling-water saturation technique, salt ponding test, and Initial Surface Absorption Test (ISAT). At 28 days, GO-nanocomposite exhibited increased density (+14%), improved compressive and flexural strength (+29% and +13%, respectively), and decreased permeability compared to the control sample. The strengthening effect dominated over the adverse effects associated with the worsening of the fresh properties; reduced permeability was mainly attributed to the refining of the pore network induced by the presence of GO.

Synthesis and Characterization of Some Graphene Oxide Powders Used as Additives in Hydraulic Mortars

Various powders of graphene oxide (GO), GO with silver (GO-Ag) and zinc oxide (GO-ZnO) were obtained. The powders were silanized with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) aiming to be used, in a future stage, as additives in the hydraulic lime mortars composition. The powders were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) before and after the silanization process. GO, GO-Ag, GO-Ag-APTES, GO-ZnO and GO-ZnO-APTES powders were also investigated by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG/DTA) and Ultraviolet–Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Likewise, the antibacterial effect of powders against five bacterial strains was evaluated. The peaks associated to the functional groups from GO, GO-APTES, GO-Ag, GO-Ag-APTES, GO-ZnO and GO-ZnO-APTES powders were identified by FTIR analysis. The mass losses of powders, analyzed by TG/DTA were lower than those recorded for GO. By UV-VIS analysis, maxima corresponding to the electronic π-π * and n-π * transitions were recorded. SEM images highlighted the lamellar and layered structure of GO, but also the presence of Ag and Zn nanoparticles on the surface of graphene sheets. All these results confirm the presence of Ag/ZnO/APTES on the GO. The antibacterial effect evaluated by recording the diameter of the inhibition zone ranged between 12–22 mm.

Toward nanotechnology-enabled face masks against SARS-CoV-2 and pandemic respiratory diseases

Wearing a face mask has become a necessity following the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, where its effectiveness in containing the pandemic has been confirmed. Nevertheless, the pandemic has revealed major deficiencies in the ability to manufacture and ramp up worldwide production of efficient surgical-grade face masks. As a result, many researchers have focused their efforts on the development of low cost, smart and effective face covers. In this article, following a short introduction concerning face mask requirements, the different nanotechnology-enabled techniques for achieving better protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus are reviewed, including the development of nanoporous and nanofibrous membranes in addition to triboelectric nanogenerators based masks, which can filter the virus using various mechanisms such as straining, electrostatic attraction and electrocution. The development of nanomaterials-based mask coatings to achieve virus repellent and sterilizing capabilities, including antiviral, hydrophobic and photothermal features are also discussed. Finally, the usability of nanotechnology-enabled face masks is discussed and compared with that of current commercial-grade N95 masks. To conclude, we highlight the challenges associated with the quick transfer of nanomaterials-enabled face masks and provide an overall outlook of the importance of nanotechnology in counteracting the COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Biomedical Applications of Antiviral Nanohybrid Materials Relating to the COVID-19 Pandemic and Other Viral Crises

The COVID-19 pandemic has driven a global research to uncover novel, effective therapeutical and diagnosis approaches. In addition, control of spread of infection has been targeted through development of preventive tools and measures. In this regard, nanomaterials, particularly, those combining two or even several constituting materials possessing dissimilar physicochemical (or even biological) properties, i.e., nanohybrid materials play a significant role. Nanoparticulate nanohybrids have gained a widespread reputation for prevention of viral crises, thanks to their promising antimicrobial properties as well as their potential to act as a carrier for vaccines. On the other hand, they can perform well as a photo-driven killer for viruses when they release reactive oxygen species (ROS) or photothermally damage the virus membrane. The nanofibers can also play a crucial protective role when integrated into face masks and personal protective equipment, particularly as hybridized with antiviral nanoparticles. In this draft, we review the antiviral nanohybrids that could potentially be applied to control, diagnose, and treat the consequences of COVID-19 pandemic. Considering the short age of this health problem, trivially the relevant technologies are not that many and are handful. Therefore, still progressing, older technologies with antiviral potential are also included and discussed. To conclude, nanohybrid nanomaterials with their high engineering potential and ability to inactivate pathogens including viruses will contribute decisively to the future of nanomedicine tackling the current and future pandemics.

Antibacterial metals and alloys for potential biomedical implants

Metals and alloys, including stainless steel, titanium and its alloys, cobalt alloys, and other metals and alloys have been widely used clinically as implant materials, but implant-related infection or inflammation is still one of the main causes of implantation failure. The bacterial infection or inflammation that seriously threatens human health has already become a worldwide complaint. Antibacterial metals and alloys recently have attracted wide attention for their long-term stable antibacterial ability, good mechanical properties and good biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo. In this review, common antibacterial alloying elements, antibacterial standards and testing methods were introduced. Recent developments in the design and manufacturing of antibacterial metal alloys containing various antibacterial agents were described in detail, including antibacterial stainless steel, antibacterial titanium alloy, antibacterial zinc and alloy, antibacterial magnesium and alloy, antibacterial cobalt alloy, and other antibacterial metals and alloys. Researches on the antibacterial properties, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of antibacterial metals and alloys have been summarized in detail for the first time. It is hoped that this review could help researchers understand the development of antibacterial alloys in a timely manner, thereby could promote the development of antibacterial metal alloys and the clinical application.
