Abstract
OBJECTIVE Social support has been linked to a vast range of beneficial health outcomes. However, the physiological mechanisms of social support are not well characterized. Drawing on functional magnetic resonance imaging and health-related outcome data, this study aimed to understand how neural measures of "yielding"-the reduction of brain activity during social support-moderate the link between social support and health. METHODS We used a data set where 78 participants around the age of 24 years were exposed to the threat of shock when holding the hand of a partner. At ages 28 to 30 years, participants returned for a health visit where inflammatory activity and heart rate variability were recorded. RESULTS Findings showed a significant interaction between dorsal anterior cingulate cortex-related yielding and perceived social support on C-reactive protein levels ( β = -0.95, SE = 0.42, z = -2.24, p = .025, 95% confidence interval = -1.77 to -0.12). We also found a significant interaction between hypothalamus-related yielding and perceived social support on baseline heart rate variability ( β = 0.51, SE = 0.23, z = 2.19, p = .028, 95% confidence interval = 0.05 to 0.97). CONCLUSIONS Greater perceived social support was associated with lower C-reactive protein levels and greater baseline heart rate variability among individuals who were more likely to yield to social support in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and hypothalamus years earlier. The current study highlights the construct of yielding in the link between social support and physical health.

Abstract
CONTEXT Long-term weight loss (WL) maintenance is the biggest challenge for overweight and obesity because of the almost unavoidable phenomenon of partial or even total weight regain (WR) after WL. OBJECTIVE In the present study we investigated the relations of (the changes of) adipocyte size and other risk biomarkers with WR during the follow-up of the Yoyo dietary intervention. METHODS In this randomized controlled study, 48 overweight/obese participants underwent a very-low-calorie diet to lose weight, followed by a weight-stable period of 4 weeks and a follow-up period of 9 months. Anthropometric measurements, adipocyte volume of abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue, and plasma metabolic parameters (free fatty acids [FFAs], triglycerides [TGs], total cholesterol, glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance [HOMA-IR], interleukin 6 [IL-6], angiotensin-converting enzyme [ACE] activity, retinol binding protein 4 [RBP4]) at the beginning and the end of follow-up were analyzed. RESULTS Our results show that changes of TGs, IL-6, HOMA-IR, and ACE are significantly positively correlated with WR. Multiple linear regression analysis shows that only TG and IL-6 changes remained significantly correlated with WR and increased body fat mass. Moreover, the change in HOMA-IR was tightly correlated with the change in TGs. Surprisingly, change in adipocyte volume during follow-up was not correlated with WR nor with other factors, but positive correlations between adipocyte volume and HOMA-IR were found at the beginning and end of the follow-up. CONCLUSION These results suggest that TGs and IL-6 are independently linked to WR via separate mechanisms, and that HOMA-IR and adipocyte volume may indirectly link to WR through the change of plasma TGs.

Abstract
This study evaluated the association between ultra-processed foods (UPF) on serum IL-6 and to investigate the mediation role of adiposity. Participants were 524 adults from the EPITeen Cohort (Porto, Portugal) and 2888 participants from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort (Pelotas, Brazil). Dietary intake was collected using FFQ when participants were 21 years of age in the EPITeen and 23 years in the Pelotas Cohort. Serum IL-6 and body fat mass were evaluated when participants were 27 and 30 years old in the EPITeen and Pelotas, respectively. Generalised linear models were fitted to test main associations. Mediation of body fat mass was estimated using G-computation. After adjustment for socio-economic and behaviour variables, among females from the EPITeen, the concentration of IL-6 (pg/ml) increased with increasing intake of UPF from 1·31 (95 % CI 0·95, 1·82) in the first UPF quartile to 2·20 (95 % CI 1·60, 3·01) and 2·64 (95 % CI 1·89, 3·69) for the third and fourth UPF quartiles, respectively. A similar result was found among males in the Pelotas Cohort, IL-6 increased from 1·40 (95 % CI 1·32, 1·49) in the first UPF quartile to 1·50 (95 % CI 1·41, 1·59) and 1·59 (95 % CI 1·49, 1·70) in the two highest UPF quartiles. The P-value for the linear trend was < 0·01 in both findings. The indirect effect through fat mass was NS. Our findings suggest that the consumption of UPF was associated with an increase in IL-6 concentration; however, this association was not explained by adiposity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death globally. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a biomarker of cardiovascular risk. AIM To investigate factors associated with IL-6 concentration in serum, from early life up to 30 years of age. SUBJECTS AND METHODS In the 2012-2013 follow-up, IL-6 was measured in 2809 participants of the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort (1369 males). Multivariable linear regressions, stratified by sex, were performed to evaluate the associations of African ancestry, family income and maternal education at birth, monthly income and education at 30 years, smoking status, harmful alcohol intake, physical activity, and body composition with IL-6, considering a conceptual hierarchical framework. RESULTS Males with low educational levels and current smokers had the highest mean IL-6. Among females, African ancestry and low monthly income were associated with the highest mean values for the outcome. Physical activity had an inverse association with IL-6 concentration among females. A direct relationship was observed between the measures of adiposity on IL-6, in both sexes. CONCLUSION Body composition was the main predictor for the outcome evaluated in males and females. Thus, the avoidance of overweight remains an important strategy for the prevention and control of cardiovascular risk and biomarkers associated with these diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is increasingly being evaluated for a neuro-immune basis. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is the most widely studied cytokine with a potential role in altering neurotransmission. The evidence for plasma IL-6 alterations in OCD has yielded mixed results. Psychotropic medications are known to modulate inflammatory processes and cytokine levels. METHODS In this study, we recruited unmedicated, co-morbidity-free adult OCD patients (n = 49) and sex-matched healthy controls HC (n = 47) and compared their plasma IL-6 levels and their correlation with age at onset, duration of illness, and severity. RESULTS IL-6 plasma level (ng/ml) in unmedicated OCD patients (1.31 ± 0.67) was significantly greater compared to HC (1.03 ± 0.47) [t = 2.33 (p = 0.02)]. The group differences persisted even after controlling for age and sex [F(1, 91) = 4.57, p = 0.035, η2 = 0.05]. Plasma IL-6 did not correlate significantly with any clinical variables. CONCLUSIONS This study adds to the existing literature on immune alterations in OCD. Alterations in plasma IL-6 might have implications in the neurotransmitter alterations and stress-response in OCD. The current study results in unmedicated and comorbidity-free OCD patients give us a better understanding of the immune alterations in OCD. Future studies in such a population will probably help in reducing the heterogeneity of findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES AND DESIGN This study aimed to understand the longitudinal relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) and body mass index (BMI) from adolescence to early adulthood. METHODS CRP and BMI were collected from participants of the Raine Study Gen2 at 14-, 17-, 20- and 22-year follow-ups (n = 1312). A dual trajectory analysis was conducted to assess the association between CRP and BMI trajectories, providing conditional probabilities of membership of CRP trajectory membership given BMI trajectory membership. Best model fit was assessed by systematically fitting two to eight trajectory groups with linear and quadratic terms and comparing models according to the Bayesian Information Criterion statistic. RESULTS The three CRP trajectories were; "stable-low" (71.0%), "low-to-high" (13.8%) and "stable-high" (15.2%). Participants in a "high-increasing" BMI trajectory had a higher probability of being in the "stable-high" CRP trajectory (60.4% of participants). In contrast, individuals in the "medium-increasing" BMI trajectory did not have a significantly increased probability of being in the "stable-high" CRP trajectory. CONCLUSIONS These findings support that chronic sub-clinical inflammation is present through adolescence into early adulthood in some individuals. Targeting chronic sub-clinical inflammation though obesity prevention strategies may be important for improving future health outcomes.

Abstract
In recent decades, the incidence and diagnosis of thyroid cancer have risen dramatically, and thyroid cancer has now become the most common endocrine cancer in the world. The onset of thyroid cancer is insidious, and its progression is slow and difficult to detect. Therefore, early prevention and treatment have important strategic significance. Moreover, an in-depth exploration of the pathogenesis of thyroid cancer is key to early prevention and treatment. Substantial evidence supports obesity as an independent risk factor for thyroid cancer. Adipose tissue dysfunction in the obese state is accompanied by dysregulation of a variety of adipocytokines. Adiponectin (APN) is one of the most pivotal adipocytokines, and its connection with obesity and obesity-related disease has gradually become a hot topic in research. Recently, the association between APN and thyroid cancer has received increasing attention. The purpose of this review is to systematically review previous studies, give prominence to APN, focus on the relationship between APN, obesity and thyroid cancer, and uncover the underlying pathogenic mechanisms.

Abstract
The study aimed to compare biomarkers in groups of adolescents classified simultaneously according to body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage measured by air displacement plethysmography. This was a cross-sectional study with 533 adolescents 18 to 19 years of age in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. BMI was classified as adequate (< 25kg/m2) versus excess weight (≥ 25kg/m2). High body fat percentage was defined as ≥ 25% for males and ≥ 30% for females. The adolescents were classified in four groups: "normal weight" (adequate BMI and body fat percentage), "normal weight obese" (adequate BMI with high body fat percentage), "excess weight with adequate body fat percentage", and "excess weight with high body fat percentage". Girls showed higher proportions of "normal weight obesity" (15.6%) and "excess weight with high body fat percentage" (17.1%). "Normal weight obese" adolescents exhibited higher mean values for total cholesterol (172.5mg/dL) and LDL-cholesterol (103.5mg/dL). Those with "excess weight and high body fat percentage" showed lower mean HDL-cholesterol (43.2mg/dL) compared to the other groups, higher mean interleukin-6 (2.7pg/mL) than "normal weight" and "excess weight and adequate body fat percentage" adolescents, and higher median triglycerides (114.0mg/dL) and C-reactive protein (0.14ng/mL) than "normal weight" and "normal weight obese" adolescents. Those with "excess weight and adequate body fat percentage" exhibited the same C-reactive protein levels as those with "excess weight and high body fat percentage". Assessment of nutritional status by BMI alone is limited, since 6.8% of the adolescents presented high body fat percentage despite normal BMI, and those who were "normal weight obese" had two biomarkers that were worse than for adolescents with "excess weight and high body fat percentage".

Higher ANGPTL3, apoC-III, and apoB48 dyslipidemia, and lower lipoprotein lipase concentrations are associated with dysfunctional visceral fat in adolescents with obesity. Abstract
BACKGROUND We hypothesized that adolescents with obesity have higher remnant B48 concentrations associated with lipoprotein lipase dysregulation. METHODS Cross-sectional study of 32 adolescents with obesity and 27 control subjects. RESULTS As compared to lean controls, obese participants showed 35% higher concentrations of apoB48: 3.60 (2.93-4.30) vs 2.65 (1.64-3.68) ng/ml; 28% of apoC-III: (72.7 (58.6-89.7) vs 56.9 (44.8-79.8 ug/ml and 17% ANGPTL 3: (72.2 ± 20.2 vs 61.2 ± 19.2 ng/ml). This was accompanied by a 33% reduction in LPL: 13.1 ± 5.1 vs 18.9 ± 4.7 ng/ml. Obese participants had 25% lower adiponectin 2.9 (1.9-3.8) vs 4.4 (3.2.-5.2) μg/ml; 260% higher leptin 25.7 (11.2-44.8) vs 9.3 (2.8-20.7) ng/ml c and 83% higher Il-6: 2.2 (1.3-5.4) vs 1.2 (0.8-1.4) pg/ml. ApoC-III and ANGPTL3 correlated positively with VAI; ANGPTL3 negatively with HDL-C; LDL size and VLDL-C. ApoB48 correlated negatively with LDL-C. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with obesity show higher ANGPTL3 compounded with increased apoC-III associated with increased CR and lower LPL mass. This is associated with inflammation and visceral fat. The significance of these findings resides in that they shed light on a mechanism for TRL dyslipidemia in adolescents: increased LPL inhibition impairs VLDL and chylomicron catabolism leading to atherogenic remnants.

Abstract
Background Reports on body mass index (BMI) trajectories from childhood into late adolescence, their determinants, and subsequent cardiometabolic risk markers, particularly among European populations have been few. Moreover, sex-specific investigation is necessary considering the sex difference in BMI, and the sex-specific association between BMI and some cardiometabolic risk markers. Methods Using a sample from the DOrtmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed study, we explored sex-specific trajectories of the BMI standard deviation score (SDS) from 4 to 18 years of age in 354 males and 335 females by latent (class) growth models. The determinants of trajectory were assessed by logistic regression. We identified cardiometabolic risk markers that were highly associated with BMI SDS trajectory by random forest regression, and finally we used generalized linear models to investigate differences in the identified cardiometabolic risk markers between pairs of trajectories. Results We observed four: ‘low-normal weight’, ‘mid-normal weight’, ‘high-normal weight’, and ‘overweight’, and three: ‘‘low-normal weight’, ‘mid-normal weight’, and ‘high-normal weight’ trajectories in males and females, respectively. Higher maternal prepregnancy BMI was associated with the ‘overweight’ trajectory, and with ‘high-normal weight’ trajectory in both sexes. In addition, employed mothers and first-born status were associated with ‘high-normal weight’ trajectory in females. BMI SDS trajectory was associated with high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and interleukin-18 (IL-18) in males, and diastolic blood pressure and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in females. However, only males following the ‘overweight’ trajectory had significantly higher IL-18 when compared to their ‘low-normal weight’ counterpart. Conclusions We identified sex-specific distinct trajectories of BMI SDS from childhood into late adolescence, higher maternal prepregnancy BMI as a common determinant of the ‘high-normal weight’ and ‘overweight’ trajectories, and ‘overweight’ trajectory being associated with elevated IL-18 in late adolescence–young adulthood. This study emphasizes the role of maternal prepregnancy BMI in overweight, and highlights IL-18 as a cardiometabolic signature of overweight across life. Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have shown that cytokines play a role in bone remodeling. METHODS In 1993, all hospital births occurred in Pelotas (Brazil) were identified and a total of 5249 newborns were included in the present cohort. Sub-samples of this cohort were visited during childhood and all members were traced at 11, 15, 18 and 22 years old. At 18 and 22 years the following biomarkers were measured: IL-6, CRP and adiponectin (the last one in a sub-sample) and bone mineral density (BMD-mg/cm2) was evaluated at 22 years. Crude regression analysis as well as adjusted for confounders (birth weight, pregnancy maternal smoking, gestational age, skin color, schooling, income, smoking, alcohol, physical activity, medical diagnosis of asthma, diabetes and hypertension, BMI, height, calcium intake, corticosteroid use, age at menarche, insulin and testosterone) were performed between the three biomarkers and the whole-body, lumbar spine and femoral BMD. RESULTS No statistical significant association was found between IL-6 and CRP with BMD, in males. Significant inverse association in the adjusted analysis, among females, was found for the highest tertiles of CRP at 22 y (beta - 15.2 mg/cm2; 95% CI: -25.4; - 4.9; p = 004), of CRP and IL-6 at 22 years (beta - 20.0 mg/cm2; 95% CI: -31.7; - 8.3; p = 0.003), and of IL-6 and CRP at both ages (beta - 20.3 mg/cm2; 95% CI: -38.0; - 2.5; p = 0.001) with total body BMD. Significant association, among males, was also found between the highest tertile of adiponectin at 22 y (beta - 23.3 mg/cm2; 95% CI: -35.5; - 11.1; p = < 001; beta - 22.5 mg/cm2; 95% CI: -42.9; - 2.2; p = 0.03; and beta - 31.8 mg/cm2; 95% CI: -55.5; - 9.1; p = 0.006) and total body, lumbar spine and femur neck BMD, respectively; and, among females, - 17.8 mg/cm2; 95% CI: -34.9; - 0.9; p = 0.033, with lumbar spine BMD. CONCLUSION CRP at 22 years, in females, seems to be a marker for total body BMD; adiponectin at 22 years is also a marker for BMD at the three sites, in males, and for lumbar spine BMD, in females.

Abstract
Background: Multimorbidity is the co-occurrence of two or more diseases in the same
individual. One method to identify this condition at an early stage is the
use of specific markers for various combinations of morbidities.
Nonetheless, evidence related to physiological markers in multimorbidity is
limited. Objective: The aim was to perform a systematic review to identify physiological markers
associated with multimorbidity. Design: Articles available on PubMed, Register of Controlled Trials, Academic Search
Premier, CINAHL, Scopus, SocINDEX, Web of Science, LILACS, and SciELO, from
their inception to May 2018, were systematically searched and reviewed. The
project was registered in PROSPERO under the number CRD42017055522. Results: The systematic search identified 922 papers. After evaluation, 18 articles
were included in the full review reporting at least one physiological marker
in coexisting diseases or which are strongly associated with the presence of
multimorbidity in the future. Only five of these studies examined
multimorbidity in general, identifying five physiological markers associated
with multimorbidity, namely, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS),
interleukin 6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), lipoprotein (Lp), and
cystatin C (Cyst-C). Conclusions: There is a paucity of studies related to physiological markers in
multimorbidity. DHEAS, IL-6, CRP, Lp, and Cyst-C could be the initial focus
for further investigation of physiological markers related to
multimorbidity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cytokines release by adipocytes could interact with TSH secretion. We evaluated the relationship between adipocytokines and TSH. We further tested for association of cytokines and thyroid autoimmunity. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study in a community-based sample including 5385 individuals (2964 female) with TSH within the reference range. Subjects who reported taking thyroid medications or drugs that alter thyroid function were excluded. TSH, FT4, adiponectin, leptin, antibody against thyroperoxidase and against thyroglobulin were measured. Linear and logistic regression models were used to test for association. RESULTS Females had higher adiponectin and leptin level and increased frequency of thyroid antibodies. In multiple regression analysis TSH was directly associated with leptin (β = 0.003, p = 0.001) and the presence of circulating antibody against thyroperoxidase (β = 0.315, p < 0.001), but negatively associated with age (β = -0.012, p < 0.001) and FT4 (β = -0.359, p < 0.001). Adiponectin, the presence of antibody against thyroglobulin and smoking habit were not associated with TSH levels (p = 0.223, p = 0.174 and p = 0.788, respectively). Logistic regression analysis revealed that higher adiponectin levels were associated with thyroid autoimmunity. CONCLUSIONS Leptin is positively associated with TSH levels in euthyroid individuals, suggesting an effect of the adipokine on TSH secretion. Our results support the hypothesis that the leptin and pituitary-thyroid axis might interact in the context of energy homeostasis. The effect of adiponectin on thyroid autoimmunity will require more studies.
