Optimization of copper, lead and cadmium biosorption onto newly isolated bacterium using a Box-Behnken design

The quorum sensing SinI/R system contributes to cadmium immobilization in Ensifer adhaerens NER9 in the cadmium-contaminated solution

In this study, the cadmium (Cd)-tolerant Ensifer adhaerens strain NER9 with quorum sensing (QS) systems (responsible for N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) production) was characterized for QS system-mediated Cd immobilization and the underlying mechanisms involved. Whole-genome sequence analysis revealed that strain NER9 contains the QS SinI/R and TraI/R systems. Strains NER9 and the NER9∆sinI/R, NER9∆traI/R, and NER9∆sinI/R-traI/R mutants were constructed and compared for QS SinI/R and TraI/R system-mediated Cd immobilization in the solution and the mechanisms involved. After 24 h of incubation, strain NER9 significantly decreased the Cd concentration in the Cd-contaminated solution compared with the NER9∆sinI/R, NER9∆traI/R, and NER9∆sinI/R-traI/R mutants. The NER9∆sinI/R mutant had a greater impact on Cd immobilization and a lower impact on the activities of AHLs than did the NER9∆traI/R mutant. The NER9∆sinI/R mutant had significantly greater Cd concentrations and lower cell wall- and exopolysaccharide (EPS)-adsorbed Cd contents than did strain NER9. Furthermore, the NER9∆sinI/R mutant presented a decrease in the number of functional groups interacting with Cd, compared with strain NER9. These results suggested that the SinI/R system in strain NER9 contributed to Cd immobilization by mediating cell wall- and EPS-adsorption in Cd-containing solution.

Bioremediation of Pb contaminated water using a novel Bacillus sp. strain MHSD_36 isolated from Solanum nigrum

The Pb bioremediation mechanism of a multi-metal resistant endophytic bacteria Bacillus sp. strain MHSD_36, isolated from Solanum nigrum, was characterised. The strain tested positive for the presence of plant growth promoters such as indoleacetic acid, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase, siderophores, and phosphate solubilization. The experimental data illustrated that exopolysaccharides and cell hydrophobicity played a role in Pb uptake. The data further showed that the cell wall biosorbed a significant amount (71%) of the total Pb (equivalent to 4 mg/L) removed from contaminated water, compared to the cell membrane (11%). As much as 11% of the Pb was recovered from the cytoplasmic fraction, demonstrating the ability of the strain to control the influx of toxic heavy metals into the cell and minimize their negative impacts. Pb biosorption was significantly influenced by the pH and the initial concentration of the toxic ions. Furthermore, the presence of siderophores and biosurfactants, when the strain was growing under Pb stress, was detected through liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. The strain demonstrated a multi-component based Pb biosorption mechanism and thus, has a great potential for application in heavy metal bioremediation.

Decolorization of Textile Azo Dye via Solid-State Fermented Wheat Bran by Lasiodiplodia sp. YZH1

Textile dyes are one of the major water pollutants released into water in various ways, posing serious hazards for both aquatic organisms and human beings. Bioremediation is a significantly promising technique for dye decolorization. In the present study, the fungal strain Lasiodiplodia sp. was isolated from the fruiting bodies of Schizophyllum for the first time. The isolated fungal strain was examined for laccase enzyme production under solid-state fermentation conditions with wheat bran (WB) using ABTS and 2,6-Dimethoxyphenol (DMP) as substrates, then the fermented wheat bran (FWB) was evaluated as a biosorbent for Congo red dye adsorption from aqueous solutions in comparison with unfermented wheat bran. A Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the dye removal by FWB and to analyze the interaction effects between three factors: fermentation duration, pH, and dye concentration. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied to study the changes in the physical and chemical characteristics of wheat bran before and after fermentation. An additional experiment was conducted to investigate the ability of the Lasiodiplodia sp. YZH1 to remove Congo red in the dye-containing liquid culture. The results showed that laccase was produced throughout the cultivation, reaching peak activities of ∼6.2 and 22.3 U/mL for ABTS and DMP, respectively, on the fourth day of cultivation. FWB removed 89.8% of the dye (100 mg L-1) from the aqueous solution after 12 h of contact, whereas WB removed only 77.5%. Based on the Box-Behnken design results, FWB achieved 93.08% dye removal percentage under the conditions of 6 days of fermentation, pH 8.5, and 150 mg L-1 of the dye concentration after 24 h. The fungal strain removed 95.3% of 150 mg L-1 of the dye concentration after 8 days of inoculation in the dye-containing liquid culture. These findings indicate that this strain is a worthy candidate for dye removal from environmental effluents.

Removal of toxic metal Cd (II) by Serratia bozhouensis CdIW2 using in moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR)

The use of bioreactor technology to treat industrial wastewater containing heavy metals has created new perspectives. Cadmium metal is one of the toxic heavy metals that have harmful effects on human health and the environment. This research work presents a comprehensive approach for aqueous cadmium removal through biosorption in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). The bacterium resistant to Cd(II) (350 mg/L) CdIW2 was selected among 8 cadmium tolerant bacteria isolated from the industrial wastewater of the metal industry. 16S rRNA gene and phenotypic analysis showed that the bacterium CdIW2 is similar to Serratia bozhouensis. The highest biosorption capacity of 65.79 mg/g was acquired in optimal conditions (30 min, pH = 6, 0.5 g/L, and 35 °C). The biosorption of the CdIW2 strain was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second order kinetic and showed the process's spontaneous thermodynamic and endothermic results. The removal rate 91.74% of MBBR in batch mode was obtained in 72 h and 10 mg/L of Cd(II). Furthermore, continuous mode bioreactor analysis has shown high efficiency at intel loading rates of 6-36 mg/L. day for cadmium removal. The second order kinetic (Grau) was chosen as the suitable model for modeling the MBBR process. Although several studies have evaluated the removal of various types of heavy metals, none of the studies involved the use of a metal-resistant strain in an MBBR bioreactor.

Water Quality Degradation Due to Heavy Metal Contamination: Health Impacts and Eco-Friendly Approaches for Heavy Metal Remediation

Water quality depends on its physicochemical and biological parameters. Changes in parameters such as pH, temperature, and essential and non-essential trace metals in water can render it unfit for human use. Moreover, the characteristics of the local environment, geological processes, geochemistry, and hydrological properties of water sources also affect water quality. Generally, groundwater is utilized for drinking purposes all over the globe. The surface is also utilized for human use and industrial purposes. There are several natural and anthropogenic activities responsible for the heavy metal contamination of water. Industrial sources, including coal washery, steel industry, food processing industry, plastic processing, metallic work, leather tanning, etc., are responsible for heavy metal contamination in water. Domestic and agricultural waste is also responsible for hazardous metallic contamination in water. Contaminated water with heavy metal ions like Cr (VI), Cd (II), Pb (II), As (V and III), Hg (II), Ni (II), and Cu (II) is responsible for several health issues in humans, like liver failure, kidney damage, gastric and skin cancer, mental disorders and harmful effects on the reproductive system. Hence, the evaluation of heavy metal contamination in water and its removal is needed. There are several physicochemical methods that are available for the removal of heavy metals from water, but these methods are expensive and generate large amounts of secondary pollutants. Biological methods are considered cost-effective and eco-friendly methods for the remediation of metallic contaminants from water. In this review, we focused on water contamination with toxic heavy metals and their toxicity and eco-friendly bioremediation approaches.

Copper-Contaminated Substrate Biosorption by Penicillium sp. Isolated from Kefir Grains

In this bioremediation study, the fungus Penicillium sp. isolated from kefir grains was evaluated for its resistance to copper in the culture medium. Penicillium sp. was cultivated in liquid medium prepared using 2% malt-agar at pH 7.0. Biomass of the fungus was significantly reduced, but only when 800 mg·L^-1 of Cu(NO₃)₂ copper nitrate was used. The effect on radial growth of the fungus in experiments combining different pH values and the inorganic contaminant showed an inhibition of 73% at pH 4.0, 75% at pH 7.0 and 77% at pH 9.0 in liquid medium. Thus, even though the growth of Penicillium sp. could be inhibited with relatively high doses of copper nitrate, images obtained with scanning electron microscopy showed the preservation of fungal cell integrity. Therefore, it can be concluded that Penicillium sp. isolated from kefir grains can survive while performing bioremediation to minimize the negative effects of copper on the environment through biosorption.

Biological and green remediation of heavy metal contaminated water and soils: A state-of-the-art review

Contamination of the natural ecosystem by heavy metals, organic pollutants, and hazardous waste severely impacts on health and survival of humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms. Diverse chemical and physical treatments are employed in many countries, however, the acceptance of these treatments are usually poor because of taking longer time, high cost, and ineffectiveness in contaminated areas with a very high level of metal contents. Bioremediation is an eco-friendly and efficient method of reclaiming contaminated soils and waters with heavy metals through biological mechanisms using potential microorganisms and plant species. Considering the high efficacy, low cost, and abundant availability of biological materials, particularly bacteria, algae, yeasts, and fungi, either in natural or genetically engineered (GE) form, bioremediation is receiving high attention for heavy metal removal. This report comprehensively reviews and critically discusses the biological and green remediation tactics, contemporary technological advances, and their principal applications either in-situ or ex-situ for the remediation of heavy metal contamination in soil and water. A modified PRISMA review protocol is adapted to critically assess the existing research gaps in heavy metals remediation using green and biological drivers. This study pioneers a schematic illustration of the underlying mechanisms of heavy metal bioremediation. Precisely, it pinpoints the research bottleneck during its real-world application as a low-cost and sustainable technology.

Response surface method for optimization of process variables for bioaccumulation of metals with Jatropha curcas on fly ash-amended soil

Heavy metal contamination is a serious rising issue with the dumping of fly ash (FA). A recent focus of researches and practices tends towards reutilization of FA with bioremediation technique using various plants. The present research aimed to investigate optimum metal extraction in fly ash-amended soil using microbes and treated wastewater with Jatropha curcas plant using response surface methodology (RSM). The Box-Behnken design was used to determine the optimum condition for maximum metal remediation with three levels and three variables, viz., fly ash percentage (5, 12.5, 20%), microbial dose (0.5, 5.25, 10 ml), and contaminant level of water to irrigate the plant (freshwater, treated wastewater, untreated wastewater). The approach adopted was to set fly ash percentage as "maximum," microbial dose as "minimum," and contaminant level of water to irrigate the plant as "in range." The outcome of the present research provided the best prediction models, integrated the process variables, and developed rotational curves for analyzing metal remediation in 360° rotation for Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Al as responses of interest. The optimum conditions for maximum bioremediation from fly ash-amended soils by bioaccumulation on Jatropha curcas plant worked out as 13.866% fly ash, 4.088 ml microbial dose, and treated wastewater as type of water to irrigate the plant that bioaccumulated Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Al as to 26.904, 0.760, 0.160, 0.162, and 12.895 mg/l.

Copper removal capability and genomic insight into the lifestyle of copper mine inhabiting Micrococcus yunnanensis GKSM13

Heavy metal pollution in mining areas is a serious environmental concern. The exploration of mine-inhabiting microbes, especially bacteria may use as an effective alternative for the remediation of mining hazards. A highly copper-tolerant strain GKSM13 was isolated from the soil of the Singhbhum copper mining area and characterized for significant copper (Cu) removal potential and tolerance to other heavy metals. The punctate, yellow-colored, coccoid strain GKSM13 was able to tolerate 500 mg L^-1 Cu²⁺. Whole-genome sequencing identified strain GKSM13 as Micrococcus yunnanensis, which has a 2.44 Mb genome with 2176 protein-coding genes. The presence of putative Cu homeostasis genes and other heavy metal transporters/response regulators or transcription factors may responsible for multi-metal resistance. The maximum Cu²⁺ removal of 89.2% was achieved at a pH of 7.5, a temperature of 35.5 °C, and an initial Cu²⁺ ion concentration of 31.5 mg L^-1. Alteration of the cell surface, deposition of Cu²⁺ in the bacterial cell, and the involvement of hydroxyl, carboxyl amide, and amine groups in Cu²⁺ removal were observed using microscopic and spectroscopic analysis. This study is the first to reveal a molecular-based approach for the multi-metal tolerance and copper homeostasis mechanism of M. yunnanensis GKSM13.

Adsorption capacity of Penicillium amphipolaria XK11 for cadmium and antimony

Heavy metal pollution is a global problem that affects both the environment and human health. Microorganisms play an important role in remediation. Most studies on the use of microorganisms for heavy metal remediation focus on single heavy metals. In this study, a strain of Penicillium amphipolaria, XK11 with high resistance to both antimony (Sb III) and cadmium (Cd II) was screened from the mineral slag. The strain also had a high phosphate solubilization capacity. The single-factor adsorption experiment results showed that the initial pH (pH₀), adsorption time (T), and initial solution concentration (C₀) all affected the adsorption of Sb and Cd by XK11. When the initial pH₀ (Cd = 6, Sb = 4) and adsorption time (T = 7 d) were constant, XK11 achieved the maximum removal rate of Cd (45.6%) and Sb (34.6%). These results confirm that XK11 has potential as a biomaterial or remediation of Sb and Cd pollution.

Heavy Metal Contamination in the Aquatic Ecosystem: Toxicity and Its Remediation Using Eco-Friendly Approaches

Urbanization and industrialization are responsible for environmental contamination in the air, water, and soil. These activities also generate large amounts of heavy metal ions in the environment, and these contaminants cause various types of health issues in humans and other animals. Hexavalent chromium, lead, and cadmium are toxic heavy metal ions that come into the environment through several industrial processes, such as tanning, electroplating, coal mining, agricultural activities, the steel industry, and chrome plating. Several physical and chemical methods are generally used for the heavy metal decontamination of wastewater. These methods have some disadvantages, including the generation of secondary toxic sludge and high operational costs. Hence, there is a need to develop a cost-effective and eco-friendly method for the removal of heavy metal ions from polluted areas. Biological methods are generally considered eco-friendly and cost-effective. This review focuses on heavy metal contamination, its toxicity, and eco-friendly approaches for the removal of heavy metals from contaminated sites.

Characterization of Endophytic Bacteria Isolated from Typha latifolia and Their Effect in Plants Exposed to Either Pb or Cd

Plant-associated bacteria in heavy-metal-contaminated environments could be a biotechnological tool to improve plant growth. The present work aimed to isolate lead- and cadmium-tolerant endophytic bacteria from the roots of Typha latifolia growing in a site contaminated with these heavy metals. Endophytic bacteria were characterized according to Pb and Cd tolerance, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria activities, and their effect on T. latifolia seedlings exposed and non-exposed to Pb and Cd. Pb-tolerant isolates were identified as Pseudomonas azotoformans JEP3, P. fluorescens JEP8, and P. gessardii JEP33, while Cd-tolerant bacteria were identified as P. veronii JEC8, JEC9, and JEC11. They all exert biochemical activities, including indole acetic acid synthesis, siderophore production, and phosphate solubilization. Plant-bacteria interaction assays showed that P. azotoformans JEP3, P. fluorescens JEP8, P. gessardii JEP33, and P. veronii JEC8, JEC9, JEC11 promote the growth of T. latifolia seedlings by increasing the root and shoot length, while in plants exposed to either 5 mg/L of Pb or 10 mg/L of Cd, all bacterial isolates increased the shoot length and the number of roots per plant, suggesting that they are plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria that could contribute to T. latifolia adaptation to the heavy metal polluted site.

Investigation into Biosorption of Pharmaceuticals from Aqueous Solutions by Biocomposite Material Based on Microbial Biomass and Natural Polymer: Process Variables Optimization and Kinetic Studies

Biosorbtive removal of the antibacterial drug, ethacridine lactate (EL), from aqueous solutions was investigated using as biosorbent Saccharomyces pastorianus residual biomass immobilized in calcium alginate. The aim of this work was to optimize the biosorption process and to evaluate the biosorption capacity in the batch system. Response surface methodology, based on a Box–Behnken design, was used to optimize the EL biosorption parameters. Two response functions (removal efficiency and biosorption capacity) were maximized dependent on three factors: initial concentration of EL solution, contact time, and agitation speed. The highest values for the studied functions (89.49%, 26.04 mg/g) were obtained in the following operational conditions: EL initial concentration: 59.73 mg/L; contact time: 94.26 min; agitation speed: 297.57 rpm. A number of nonlinear kinetic models, including pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and Avrami, were utilized to validate the biosorption kinetic behavior of EL in the optimized conditions. The kinetic data fitted the pseudo-first-order and Avrami models. The experimental results demonstrated that the optimized parameters (especially the agitation speed) significantly affect biosorption and should be considered important in such studies.

Bacterial Biosorbents, an Efficient Heavy Metals Green Clean-Up Strategy: Prospects, Challenges, and Opportunities

Rapid industrialization has led to the pollution of soil and water by various types of contaminants. Heavy metals (HMs) are considered the most reactive toxic contaminants, even at low concentrations, which cause health problems through accumulation in the food chain and water. Remediation using conventional methods, including physical and chemical techniques, is a costly treatment process and generates toxic by-products, which may negatively affect the surrounding environment. Therefore, biosorption has attracted significant research interest in the recent decades. In contrast to existing methods, bacterial biomass offers a potential alternative for recovering toxic/persistent HMs from the environment through different mechanisms for metal ion uptake. This review provides an outlook of the advantages and disadvantages of the current bioremediation technologies and describes bacterial groups, especially extremophiles with biosorbent potential for heavy metal removal with relevant examples and perspectives.

Dual Effect of Acetic Acid Efficiently Enhances Sludge-Based Biochar to Recover Uranium From Aqueous Solution

Excess sludge (ES) treatment and that related to the uranium recovery from uranium-containing wastewater (UCW) are two hot topics in the field of environmental engineering. Sludge-based biochar (SBB) prepared from ES was used to recover uranium from UCW. Excellent effects were achieved when SBB was modified by acetic acid. Compared with SBB, acetic acid-modified SBB (ASBB) has shown three characteristics deserving interest: 1) high sorption efficiency, in which the sorption ratio of U(VI) was increased by as high as 35.0%; 2) fast sorption rate, as the equilibrium could be achieved within 5.0 min; 3) satisfied sorption/desorption behavior; as a matter of fact, the sorption rate of U(VI) could still be maintained at 93.0% during the test cycles. In addition, based on the test conditions and various characterization results, it emerged as a dual effect of acetic acid on the surface of SBB, i.e., to increase the porosity and add (−COOH) groups. It was revealed that U(VI) and −COO− combined in the surface aperture of ASBB via single-dentate coordination. Altogether, a new utilization mode for SBB is here proposed, as a means of efficient uranium sorption from UCW.

Curvularia coatesiae XK8, a Potential Bioadsorbent Material for Adsorbing Cd(II) and Sb(III) Compound Pollution: Characteristics and Effects

Soil heavy metal pollution is a common problem in mining areas. The soil of the Xikuangshan located in Lengshuijiang, Hunan Province, China contains various excessive heavy metals, especially antimony and cadmium. Previous studies have shown that heavy metal-tolerant microorganisms screened from mining areas have the potential to adsorb heavy metals. In this study, we screened out a cadmium and antimony tolerant fungus named XK8 from the slags collected from the Xikuangshan. Then, we explored the single and binary biosorption characteristics of Cd(II) and Sb(III) on it. In our results, the fungus XK8 was identified as Curvularia coatesiae XK8 by ITS sequencing analysis. Under the optimal conditions, in binary biosorption of the XK8, the main effect of the initial cadmium concentration on the cadmium removal rate of XK8 is negative, while the main effect of the initial antimony concentration, biosorption time, and initial pH on the cadmium removal rate of XK8 is positive. The initial pH has the greatest impact on the biosorption of cadmium on XK8, followed by the biosorption time; moreover, the effects of both are stronger than the coexisting ions. SAS analysis shows that under the optimal conditions, the theoretical maximum cadmium removal rate of XK8 is 100%, and the actual removal rate is 67.57%. Compared to the single biosorption with binary biosorption, the maximum biosorption capacity of XK8 for cadmium in the composite biosorption system increased to 23.6 mg g^–1. It shows that under the background of high antimony, Sb(III) has a promoting effect on the biosorption of Cd(II) on XK8. In summary, a cadmium and antimony tolerant fungus with strong cadmium biosorption ability under the background of high antimony was screened out. It provides a potential microbial material for the bioremediation of heavy metal pollution.

Recent Developments in Microbe-Plant-Based Bioremediation for Tackling Heavy Metal-Polluted Soils

Soil contamination with heavy metals (HMs) is a serious concern for the developing world due to its non-biodegradability and significant potential to damage the ecosystem and associated services. Rapid industrialization and activities such as mining, manufacturing, and construction are generating a huge quantity of toxic waste which causes environmental hazards. There are various traditional physicochemical techniques such as electro-remediation, immobilization, stabilization, and chemical reduction to clean the contaminants from the soil. However, these methods require high energy, trained manpower, and hazardous chemicals make these techniques costly and non-environment friendly. Bioremediation, which includes microorganism-based, plant-based, microorganism-plant associated, and other innovative methods, is employed to restore the contaminated soils. This review covers some new aspects and dimensions of bioremediation of heavy metal-polluted soils. The bioremediation potential of bacteria and fungi individually and in association with plants has been reviewed and critically examined. It is reported that microbes such as Pseudomonas spp., Bacillus spp., and Aspergillus spp., have high metal tolerance, and bioremediation potential up to 98% both individually and when associated with plants such as Trifolium repens, Helianthus annuus, and Vallisneria denseserrulata. The mechanism of microbe's detoxification of metals depends upon various aspects which include the internal structure, cell surface properties of microorganisms, and the surrounding environmental conditions have been covered. Further, factors affecting the bioremediation efficiency and their possible solution, along with challenges and future prospects, are also discussed.

Kleibsiella pneumoniae Kpn555, isolated from coffee waste pulp showed high level of tolerance to lead with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 900 mg/L. On its growth in nutrient broth supplemented with lead, brown clumps were visualised at the bottom of the flask. On scanning and transmission electron microscopic studies the brown clumps were corroborated to be bacterial cells with lead biosorbed on the cell surface and accumulated inside the cytoplasm. Biochemical and FT-IR analysis of the extracellular polymeric substance produced on exposure to lead revealed its chemical nature as glycolipid with protein moieties. Purified EPS (100 mg/L) could remove 50% of lead from aqueous solution (200 mg/L). Isolation of plasmid from Klebsiella pneumoniae Kpn555 revealed the presence of a plasmid of size 30–40 kb. This capability of the bacteria was proven to be plasmid mediated as the Escherichia coli DH5α cells transformed with the plasmid of Klebsiella pneumoniae Kpn555 also could tolerate 900 mg/L of lead and form brown clumps. This study shows that these bacteria, aided by EPS could serve as an effective agent for the removal of lead from contaminated water environmental samples.

Rhizosphere Bacteria in Plant Growth Promotion, Biocontrol, and Bioremediation of Contaminated Sites: A Comprehensive Review of Effects and Mechanisms

Agriculture in the 21st century is facing multiple challenges, such as those related to soil fertility, climatic fluctuations, environmental degradation, urbanization, and the increase in food demand for the increasing world population. In the meanwhile, the scientific community is facing key challenges in increasing crop production from the existing land base. In this regard, traditional farming has witnessed enhanced per acre crop yields due to irregular and injudicious use of agrochemicals, including pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, but at a substantial environmental cost. Another major concern in modern agriculture is that crop pests are developing pesticide resistance. Therefore, the future of sustainable crop production requires the use of alternative strategies that can enhance crop yields in an environmentally sound manner. The application of rhizobacteria, specifically, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), as an alternative to chemical pesticides has gained much attention from the scientific community. These rhizobacteria harbor a number of mechanisms through which they promote plant growth, control plant pests, and induce resistance to various abiotic stresses. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms of rhizobacteria involved in plant growth promotion, biocontrol of pests, and bioremediation of contaminated soils. It also focuses on the effects of PGPR inoculation on plant growth survival under environmental stress. Furthermore, the pros and cons of rhizobacterial application along with future directions for the sustainable use of rhizobacteria in agriculture are discussed in depth.

Restoration of heavy metal-contaminated soil and water through biosorbents: A review of current understanding and future challenges

Heavy metal pollution in soil and water is a potential threat to human health as it renders food quality substandard. Different biosorbents such as microbial and agricultural biomass have been exploited for heavy metal immobilization in soil and sorptive removal in waters. Biosorption is an effective and sustainable method for heavy metal removal in soil and water, but the inherent challenges are to find cheap, selective, robust, and cost-effective bioadsorbents. Microbial and agricultural biomass and their modified forms such as nanocomposites and carbonaceous materials (viz., biochar, nanobiochar, biocarbon), might be useful for sequestration of heavy metals in soil via adsorption, ion exchange, complexation, precipitation, and enzymatic transformation mechanisms. In this review, potential biosorbents and their metal removal capacity in soil and water are discussed. The microbial adsorbents and modified composites of agricultural biomasses show improved performance, stability, reusability, and effectively immobilize heavy metals from soil and water. In the future, researchers may consider the modified composites, encapsulated biosorbents for soil and water remediation.

The multi metal-resistant bacterium Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34 affects growth and metal mobilization in Arabidopsis thaliana plants exposed to copper

Copper (Cu) is important for plant growth, but high concentrations can lead to detrimental effects such as primary root length inhibition, vegetative tissue chlorosis, and even plant death. The interaction between plant-soil microbiota and roots can potentially affect metal mobility and availability, and, therefore, overall plant metal concentration. Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34 is a multi metal-resistant bacterial model that alters metal mobility and bioavailability through ion pumping, metal complexation, and reduction processes. The interactions between strain CH34 and plants may affect the growth, metal uptake, and translocation of Arabidopsis thaliana plants that are exposed to or not exposed to Cu. In this study, we looked also at the specific gene expression changes in C. metallidurans when co-cultured with Cu-exposed A. thaliana. We found that A. thaliana’s rosette area, primary and secondary root growth, and dry weight were affected by strain CH34, and that beneficial or detrimental effects depended on Cu concentration. An increase in some plant growth parameters was observed at copper concentrations lower than 50 µM and significant detrimental effects were found at concentrations higher than 50 µM Cu. We also observed up to a 90% increase and 60% decrease in metal accumulation and mobilization in inoculated A. thaliana. In turn, copper-stressed A. thaliana altered C. metallidurans colonization, and cop genes that encoded copper resistance in strain CH34 were induced by the combination of A. thaliana and Cu. These results reveal the complexity of the plant-bacteria-metal triad and will contribute to our understanding of their applications in plant growth promotion, protection, and phytoremediation strategies.

Biological treatment of hazardous heavy metals by Streptomyces rochei ANH for sustainable water management in agriculture

Microbial bioremediation of heavy metals-polluted industrial effluents has been adopted as one of the most effective eco-friendly tool to cope up with the harmful effects of metals. This study was designed to investigate the biosorption potential of marine actinomycetes isolated from the Alexandrian Mediterranean Seacoast, Egypt, with their potential use in metal remediation of industrial effluents. Among the nine marine actinomycetes isolates, Streptomyces rochei ANH showed the highest versatile metal resistance capability with MIC values of 125 mg/l for Cr⁶⁺ and 60 mg/l for both Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺. Additionally, scanning electron micrographs showed complete disintegration of Cr⁶⁺-treated biomass compared with the control ones where spores remained intact and connected in long chains. The study also aimed to improve the percentage of Cr⁶⁺ biosorption by S. rochei ANH biomass using the statistical designs of Plackett–Burman and Box-Behnken where up to 85% of Cr⁶⁺ removal was recorded under the following conditions: pH (5), incubation temperature (30 °C), contact time (3 h), agitation speed (90 rpm), initial Cr⁶⁺ concentration (50 mg/l) and living biomass concentration (10 mg/ml). The results also showed that the percentage of Cr⁶⁺ biosorption by S. rochei ANH decreased gradually beyond these values. Moreover, the results revealed that the use of the biomass of S. rochei ANH is an effective biotechnological agent for the biological treatment of heavy metal-contaminated tannery effluent where the percentages of metal removal were in the following order: Ni²⁺ (100%) ≥ Cu²⁺  ≥ Mn²⁺  ≥ Fe²⁺  > Pb²⁺ (95%) ≥ Cd²⁺  > Cr⁶⁺ (86%). Furthermore, the treated effluent exhibited a stimulating effect on the germination process of Lepidium sativum seeds. Therefore, the present study implies that S. rochei ANH can be considered a powerful candidate to mitigate hazardous heavy metals pollution from industrial effluents and improve the water quality for agricultural purposes.

Escherichia coli templated iron oxide biomineralization under oscillation

Motility is significant in organisms. Studying the influence of motility on biological processes provides a new angle in understanding the essence of life. Biomineralization is a representative process for organisms in forming functional materials. In the present study, we investigated the biomineralization of iron oxides templated by Escherichia coli (E. coli) cells under oscillation. The formation of iron oxide minerals with acicular and banded morphology was observed. The surface charge of E. coli cells contributed to the biomineralization process. The surface components of E. coli cells including lipids, carbohydrates and proteins also have roles in regulating the formation and morphology of iron oxide minerals. As-prepared mineralized iron oxide nanomaterials showed activity in photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue as well as in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. This study is helpful not only in understanding motility in biological processes, but also in developing techniques for fabricating functional nanomaterials.

Efficient removal of lead and arsenic using macromolecule-carbonized rice husks

The adsorption process using inexpensive adsorbents is one of the methods to remove contaminants from aqueous solutions. Biomass porous carbon based materials are among the most widely used adsorbents in this field. Rice husk is a bio-based adsorbent material for pollutant removal. In this study, the porous carbon material obtained from the rice husk was used for the adsorptive removal of lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) from aqueous solutions. Silica was removed from rice husk structure through the one-step reaction using PTFE. The morphological and crystallographic characteristics of the adsorbent surface were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The removal efficiency was investigated under different conditions of pH (3–9), contact time (3–90min), adsorbent amount (0.5–6 g/l) and initially adsorbed concentration (10–100 μg/l) by changing the parameters in the adsorption reactions. The Response Surface Method (RSM), a Box-Behnken design (BBD), was used to optimize adsorption of Lead and Arsenic by Rice husk. The removal efficiency was finally calculated using analysis of variance. According to the adsorption analysis results, the removal efficiency of Pb and As in aqueous solutions increased (up to 97%, 85% for Lead and Arsenic) under optimum conditions.

A meta-analysis of metal biosorption by suspended bacteria from three phyla

Biosorption of heavy metals by bacterial biomass has been the subject of significant research interest in last decades due to its efficiency, relatively low cost and minimal negative effects for the surrounding environment. In this meta-analysis, the biosorption efficiencies of different bacterial strains for Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Cr(III), Mn(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) were evaluated. Optimum conditions for the biosorption process such as initial metal concentration, temperature, pH, contact time, metal type, biomass dosage and bacterial phyla, were evaluated for each heavy metal. According to the results, the efficiencies of bacterial biomass for removal of heavy metal were as follows: Cd(II) > Cr(III) > Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Mn(II). Firmicute phyla showed the highest overall (living and dead) biosorption efficiency for heavy metals. Living biomass of Proteobacteria had the best biosorption performance. Living bacterial biomass was significantly more efficient in biosorption of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) than dead biomass. The maximum biosorption efficiency of bacterial strains for Cd(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) was achieved at pH values between 6 and 7.5. High temperatures (>35 °C) reduced the removal efficiencies for Cu(II) and Zn(II) and increased the efficiencies for Cd(II) and Cr(III) ions. The maximum biosorption efficiency of non-essential heavy metals occurred with short contact times (<2 h). Essential metals such as Zn and Cu were more efficiently removed with long biosorption durations (>24 h). The mean biosorption capacity of bacterial biomass was between 71.26 and 125.88 mg g^-1. No publication bias existed according to Egger's and Begg's test results.

Potential of cadmium resistant Burkholderia contaminans strain ZCC in promoting growth of soy beans in the presence of cadmium

Bioremediation of Cd contaminated environments can be assisted by plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) enabling plant growth in these sites. Here a gram-negative Burkholderia contaminans ZCC was isolated from mining soil at a copper-gold mine. When exposed to Cd(II), ZCC displayed high Cd resistance and the minimal inhibitory concentration was 7 mM in LB medium. Complete genome analysis uncovered B. contaminans ZCC contained 3 chromosomes and 2 plasmids. One of these plasmids was shown to contain a multitude of heavy metal resistance determinants including genes encoding a putative Cd-translocating PIB-type ATPase and an RND-type related to the Czc-system. These additional heavy metal resistance determinants are likely responsible for the increased resistance to Cd(II) and other heavy metals in comparison to other strains of B. contaminans. B. contaminans ZCC also displayed PGPB traits such as 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase activity, siderophore production, organic and inorganic phosphate solubilization and indole acetic acid production. Moreover, the properties and Cd(II) binding characteristics of extracellular polymeric substances was investigated. ZCC was able to induce extracellular polymeric substances production in response to Cd and was shown to be chemically coordinated to Cd(II). It could promote the growth of soybean in the presence of elevated concentrations of Cd(II). This work will help to better understand processes important in bioremediation of Cd-contaminated environment.

Cu(II) biosorption by living biofilms: Isothermal, chemical, physical and biological evaluation

Dissolved copper in stormwater runoff is a significant environmental problem. Biosorption of dissolved metals using microorganisms is known as a green, low-cost and efficient method. However, the role of live biological agents in the remediation of dissolved copper in Sustainable Drainage (SuDS) has not been reported. In this study, the effect of pH, initial concentration and temperature, on bacteria in different stages of biofilm development on a geotextile, along with Cu(II) removal efficiencies, were evaluated. Maximum Cu(II) removal efficiency (92%) was observed at pH 6. By decreasing the pH from 6 to 2, a log 5 reduction in bacteria was observed and Carboxyl groups transformed from -COO^- to -COOH. The maximum biosorption capacity (119 mg g^-1) was detected on day 1 of biofilm development, however, maximum removal efficiency (97%) was measured on day 21 of biofilm incubation. Exteracellular Polymeric Substance (EPS) showed a better protection of CFUs in more mature biofilms (day 21) with less than 0.1 log decrease when exposed to 200 mL^-1 Cu(II), whereas, biofilm on day 1 of incubation showed a 2 log reduction in CFUs number. Thermodynamic studies showed that the maximum Cu(II) biosorption capacity of biofilms, incubated for 7 days (117 mg g^-1) occurred at 35 °C. Thermodynamic and kinetic modelling of data revealed that a physical, feasible, spontaneous and exothermic process controlled the biosorption, with a diffusion process observed in external layers of the biofilm, fitting a pseudo-second order model. Equilibrium data modelling and high R² values of Langmuir model indicated that the biosorption took place by a monolayer on the living biofilm surface in all stages of biofilm development.

Brevundimonas diminuta MYS6 associated Helianthus annuus L. for enhanced copper phytoremediation

Natural occurring metal-tolerant microbial population have replaced conventional expensive metal remediation approach since the last few years. The present study focuses on investigating the potential of a copper-tolerant plant growth promoting rhizobacterial strain Brevundimonas diminuta MYS6 for Cu bioremediation, plant growth promotion and Cu uptake in Helianthus annuus L. Box-Behnken Design of response surface methodology optimized the influencing parameters such as pH, temperature and Cu concentration. At optimized conditions of pH (5), temperature (32.5 °C) and Cu concentration (250 mg/L), the rhizobacteria followed a sigmoid growth curve pattern with maximum Cu removal of 94.8% in the stationary phase of growth. Cu exposed Brevundimonas diminuta MYS6 produced increased EPS (18.6%), indicating their role in internal defence against Cu stress. The FTIR analysis suggested the role of carboxylic acids, alcohols and aliphatic amine groups in Cu bioremoval. Furthermore, the results of pot experiments conducted with Helianthus annuus L. var. CO4 and Brevundimonas diminuta MYS6 showed enhanced plant growth and Cu uptake. The rhizobacteria increased root and shoot length, fresh and dry plant biomass and leaf chlorophyll by 1.5, 1.7, 9.9, 15.8 and 2.1 fold. The plant biomass mediate enhanced Cu uptake in roots and shoots was found to be 2.98 and 4.1 folds higher when compared to non-inoculated treatment. Henceforth the results of the study evidence the rhizobacterial strain Brevundimonas diminuta MYS6 as an efficient bio-inoculant for copper remediation.

Wheat-associated Pseudomonas taiwanensis WRS8 reduces cadmium uptake by increasing root surface cadmium adsorption and decreasing cadmium uptake and transport related gene expression in wheat

Metal-resistant bacteria can reduce Cd accumulation in plants, but mechanisms underlying this effect are poorly understood. In this study, a highly effective Cd-resistant WRS8 strain was obtained from the rhizoshere soil of Triticum aestivum L. Yangmai-13 and identified as Pseudomonas taiwanensis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Strain WRS8 was investigated for its effects on Cd availability and wheat tissue Cd contents and the related mechanisms using a hydroponic culture experiment. In strain WRS8-inoculated solution, the Cd concentration reduced and the pH and cell-adsorbed Cd increased with time. Strain WRS8 increased the wheat root and above-ground tissue dry weights by 11-36% compared to the controls. In strain WRS8-inoculated wheat plants, the Cd contents of the roots and above-ground tissues decreased by 78-85% and 88-94% and the Cd bioconcentration and translocation factors decreased by 78-85% and 46-58% at days 3 and 10, respectively, compared with the controls. The root surface-adsorbed Cd contents increased by 99-121% in the WRS8 strain-inoculated wheat plants at days 3 and 10 compared to the controls. Furthermore, strain WRS8 colonized the wheat root surfaces and interiors and reduced the expression levels of the LCT1 and HMA2 genes involved in Cd accumulation and transport in wheat roots by 46% and 30%, respectively, compared to the controls. In the Cd-contaminated soils, strain WRS8 significantly reduced the available Cd content by 20-24% and increased the pH compared to the controls. These findings showed the important role of strain WRS8 in reducing solution and soil Cd availability and suggested that strain WRS8 reduced the wheat tissue Cd accumulation by increasing root surface Cd adsorption and decreasing wheat root Cd uptake and transport-related gene expression and may provide a new and effective wheat rhizobacteria-enhanced approach for reducing wheat Cd uptake in Cd-polluted environments.

Performance of microbial induced carbonate precipitation for immobilizing Cd in water and soil

Microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is known as a significant process for remediating heavy metals contaminated environment. In this study, a novel Cd-resistant ureolytic bacteria was isolated and identified as Enterobacter sp. Its performances for immobilizing Cd in solution and soil were systematically discussed at different treatment conditions. Results showed that initial pH and Cd concentration were important parameters to influence Cd removal rate. The maximal Cd removal rate in solution reached 99.50 % within 7 days by MICP. The precipitation produced in Cd removal process were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer to understand the removal mechanism. Analyses showed that Cd removal mechanism of CJW-1 was predominately via biominerals including calcites and vaterites to absorb Cd²⁺. Cd immobilization tests demonstrated that the highest Cd-immobilization rate in soil could reach 56.10 %. Although all treatments contribute to soil pH, fertility, and enzyme activities improvement, oyster shell wastes (OS) had a better effect on soil cation exchange capacity. All treatments had negative effects on soil respiration and bacterial community, but OS can alleviate such adverse influence. Our results emphasized that Cd-resistant ureolytic bacteria strain CJW-1 combined with OS had excellent ability and reuse value to remediate Cd-contaminated environment.

An overview of removing heavy metals from sewage sludge: Achievements and perspectives

The removal of heavy metals from sewage sludge (SS) is attracting increasing attention because the presence of toxic heavy metals in SS restricts its reuse or disposal, especially on land. This review presents an overview of research on the origin and chemical speciation of heavy metals in SS and describes methods for their removal. SS primarily absorbs heavy metals from wastewater via passive sorption and active uptake of biomass, resulting in the different chemical speciation. The advantages and disadvantages of the current methods for the removal of heavy metals from SS are analysed. The current methods focus on the removal efficiencies of heavy metals, which are high enough to meet the standard of land application, but the treatment cost, the change and retention of nutrients, and the effects on SS properties resulting from heavy metal removal are usually ignored. In this review, the main knowledge gaps are identified and proposals for future research are made. These should comprise determining the underlying mechanisms of current removal methods, optimising and integrating the removal methods, and establishing systematic evaluation standards for these methods. This review will help researchers develop new environmentally and economically friendly methods for the removal of heavy metals from SS.

Evaluation of cadmium biosorption property of de-oiled palm kernel cake

Cadmium contamination is a global concern because of its widespread nature of polluting both biotic and abiotic components of ecosystem. Though many natural, chemical/synthetic components have been researched for remediation of cadmium, development of an eco-friendly, economic biosorbent still remains a challenge. Deoiled palm kernel cake (DOPC), a byproduct from palm-oil mills was investigated in the present study for its cadmium remediating capacity. DOPC was immobilized using sodium alginate polymer and biosorption studies were carried out using DOPC as adsorbent for removal of cadmium. Research revealed biosorption potential of DOPC and the optimum conditions for maximum biosorption of cadmium have been identified as 120 min of contact time, 150 rpm of agitation speed, pH 6 and 15 mg/L of initial cadmium concentration. Maximum percentage of adsorption was 99% by using 1.5 g/100 ml of adsorbent. The adsorption equilibrium data Biosorbent was characterized before and after adsorption by FTIR which showed the involvement of carboxyl, hydroxyl and amino-groups. Statement of novelty Cadmium pollution and the leading environmental problems is a global concern. Despite various attempts for development of different matrices for remediation of cadmium from contaminated samples, application of deoiled palm kernel cake (DOPC) as a biosorbent is not being explored. Present study provides quantitative data relating the richness of phytochemical repertoire DOPC possess, its resulting radical scavenging potential and its applications as an efficient, eco-friendly and economic alternative as a biosorbent matrix material for cadmium bio-remediation.

Role of Microorganisms in the Remediation of Wastewater in Floating Treatment Wetlands: A Review

This article provides useful information for understanding the specific role of microbes in the pollutant removal process in floating treatment wetlands (FTWs). The current literature is collected and organized to provide an insight into the specific role of microbes toward plants and pollutants. Several aspects are discussed, such as important components of FTWs, common bacterial species, rhizospheric and endophytes bacteria, and their specific role in the pollutant removal process. The roots of plants release oxygen and exudates, which act as a substrate for microbial growth. The bacteria attach themselves to the roots and form biofilms to get nutrients from the plants. Along the plants, the microbial community also influences the performance of FTWs. The bacterial community contributes to the removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, toxic metals, hydrocarbon, and organic compounds. Plant–microbe interaction breaks down complex compounds into simple nutrients, mobilizes metal ions, and increases the uptake of pollutants by plants. The inoculation of the roots of plants with acclimatized microbes may improve the phytoremediation potential of FTWs. The bacteria also encourage plant growth and the bioavailability of toxic pollutants and can alleviate metal toxicity.

Bioavailability of dissolved organic matter in biogas slurry enhanced by catalytic ozonation combined with membrane separation

Large molecular weight pig biogas slurry (L-PBS) and small molecular weight pig biogas slurry (S-PBS) were separated from original pig biogas slurry (O-PBS) using a 100 kDa membrane. The original bioavailability and biosafety of L-PBS was very low. In order to enhance the total bioavailable dissolved organic nitrogen (TB-DON) and total bioavailable dissolved organic phosphorus (TB-DOP), optimum catalytic ozonation of L-PBS conditions were determined using Box-behnken design models (P < 0.0001) and intersection tests. The optimal values for ozone concentration, pH value, active catalyst concentration and reaction time were 2.63 mg·L^-1, 6.48, 1.43 g·L^-1 and 40 min, respectively. Catalytic ozonation can effectively decompose and transform 68.07% of L-PBS into S-PBS to improve content organic bioavailability, with a molecular weight distribution of 0-1 kDa (13.53%), 1-5 kDa (16.62%), 5-10 kDa (11.16%), 10-30 kDa (11.73%), 30-100 kDa (15.04%). Catalytic ozonation of L-PBS can reduce protein levels from 85.28% to 47.18%, but increases the proportion of fulvic and humic components from 10.22% to 32.67% and 4.51%-20.15%, respectively. Because catalytic ozonation changes the internal components and molecular weights of L-PBS, both saw increases in TB-DON and TB-DOP from 3.33% to 41.12% and 2.43%-37.88%, respectively, with a large number of TB-DON and TB-DOP derived from hydrophilic organic components during catalytic ozonation. These important internal mechanisms changed by catalytic ozonation can effectively reduce the ecotoxicity (IR, from 76.5% to 33.1%) and phytotoxicity (GI, enhanced from 35.4% to 70.3%) of L-PBS. Therefore, catalytic ozonation combined with membrane separation is a choice technology in improving the nutrition of biogas slurry and reduce its ecological risk.

Statistical modeling-approach for optimization of Cu2+ biosorption by Azotobacter nigricans NEWG-1; characterization and application of immobilized cells for metal removal

Heavy metals are environmental pollutants affect the integrity and distribution of living organisms in the ecosystem and also humans across the food chain. The study targeted the removal of copper (Cu²⁺) from aqueous solutions, depending on the biosorption process. The bacterial candidate was identified using 16S rRNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, in addition to morphological and cultural properties as Azotobacter nigricans NEWG-1. The Box-Behnken design was applied to optimize copper removal by Azotobacter nigricans NEWG-1 and to study possible interactive effects between incubation periods, pH and initial CuSO₄ concentration. The data obtained showed that the maximum copper removal percentage of 80.56% was reached at run no. 12, under the conditions of 200 mg/L CuSO₄, 4 days’ incubation period, pH, 8.5. Whereas, the lowest Cu²⁺ removal (12.12%) was obtained at run no.1. Cells of Azotobacter nigricans NEWG-1 before and after copper biosorption were analyzed using FTIR, EDS and SEM. FTIR analysis indicates that several functional groups have participated in the biosorption of metal ions including hydroxyl, methylene, carbonyl, carboxylate groups. Moreover, the immobilized bacterial cells in sodium alginate-beads removed 82.35 ± 2.81% of copper from the aqueous solution, containing an initial concentration of 200 mg/L after 6 h. Azotobacter nigricans NEWG-1 proved to be an efficient biosorbent in the elimination of copper ions from environmental effluents, with advantages of feasibility, reliability and eco-friendly.

Sorption Mechanism and Optimization Study for the Bioremediation of Pb(II) and Cd(II) Contamination by Two Novel Isolated Strains Q3 and Q5 of Bacillus sp

The use of bacterial strains as agents in bioremediation processes could reduce the harmfulness of potential toxic elements (PTEs) from water and soil with low or even no impact on the natural ecosystems. In this study, two new metal resistant-bacterial strains (Q3 and Q5) of Bacillus sp. were isolated from a sulfurous spring and their potential (as pure cultures or mixed) to remove Pb(II) and Cd(II) from an aqueous matrix was evaluated and optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal conditions for Cd(II) removal from all tested strains combinations were observed at an initial pH 5, a temperature of 38 °C, and an initial Cd(II) concentration of 50 mg L-1, while the performance of bacterial strains on Pb(II) removal was strongly correlated to initial pH and temperature conditions. Moreover, the efficiency of bacterial strains in removing both PTEs, Pb(II) and Cd(II), from an aqueous matrix was considerably higher when they were used as a mixed culture rather than pure. According to field emission SEM (FESEM) and EDS analysis, the two bacterial strains showed different mechanisms in removing Cd(II): Bacillus sp. Q5 bio-accumulated Cd(II) in its periplasmic space, whereas Bacillus sp. Q3 bio-accumulated Cd(II) on its cell surface. On the other hand, Pb(II) is removed by chemical precipitation (lead sulfide) induced by both Bacillus sp. Q3 and Q5. This study discloses new aspects of Pb(II) and Cd(II) bioremediation mechanisms in Bacillus species that can be extremely useful for designing and operating novel PTEs bioremediation processes.

Biosorption of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution by polyethyleneimine-modified ultrasonic-assisted acid hydrochar from Sargassum horneri

In this study, an efficient route to synthesizing polyethyleneimine-modified ultrasonic-assisted acid hydrochar (PEI-USAH) is developed and reported. Ultrasonic irradiation technique was used as surface modification method to shorten the crosslinking reaction for hydrochar and polyethyleneimine (PEI). The PEI-USAH showed an excellent adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties of this PEI-modified adsorbent were comparatively characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis and CNHS analysis. The effects of contact time, initial pH, and biosorbent dose on adsorption capacities were investigated. The batch adsorption experiments showed that PEI-USAH possessed the maximum adsorption capacities of 94.38 mg/g and 330.84 mg/g for initial Cr(VI) concentration of 100 mg/L and 500 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, this adsorption process could be fitted to Langmuir adsorption and described by the pseudo second order kinetic model. Based on the above findings, PEI-USAH could be used as a potential adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Assessment of the heavy metal bioremediation efficiency of the novel marine lactic acid bacterium, Lactobacillus plantarum MF042018

Heavy metal pollution is one of the most serious environmental and human health risk problem associated with industrial progress. The present study was conducted with the goal of isolation and characterization of metal-resistant lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the Alexandrian Mediterranean Seacoast, Egypt, with their possible exploitation in metal remediation. Lactobacillus plantarum MF042018 exhibited high degree of resistance, up to 500 and 100 ppm, to both nickel and chromium, respectively, with multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index above 0.5. In an attempt to improve chromium removal by L. plantarum MF042018, Plackett-Burman followed by Box-Behnken statistical designs were applied. An initial Cr²⁺ concentration of 100 ppm and inoculum size of 3% presented the best conditions for the accumulation of chromium by L. plantarum MF042018. The study was also navigated to assess the biosorption capacity of L. plantarum MF042018, the maximum uptake capacity (q) of both Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ was recorded at pH 2.0 and a temperature of 22 °C after 1 hr. The biosorption process of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ was well explained by the Langmuir isotherm model better than the Freundlich isotherm. Furthermore, the results revealed that the use of L. plantarum MF042018 is an effective tool for the treatment of hazardous metal-polluted battery-manufacturing effluent. Therefore, the present study implies that L. plantarum MF042018 can be applied as a promising biosorbent for the removal of heavy metals from industrial wasterwaters.

Potential of novel Dunaliella salina from sambhar salt lake, India, for bioremediation of hexavalent chromium from aqueous effluents: An optimized green approach

The potential of Dunaliella salina isolated from Sambhar Salt Lake (Rajasthan, India) for biosorption of hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) in aqueous solution has been examined under optimized culture conditions. The influence of various process parameters, such as pH (6-11), incubation time (48-120 h), metal concentration (5-25 mgL^-1), inoculum dose (2-10% vv^-1), and their combination effects during Cr(VI) sorbtion were analyzed by means of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on a 3-level Box-Behnken experiment design. Microalgae showed highest chromium biosorption with 66.4% efficiency at optimum pH (8.6) and 10% (vv^-1) inoculum size within 120 h. The experimental data obtained were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) along with lower value of coefficient of variation (34%), indicated the well fitness of quadratic equation as proposed by response surface model. Involvement of the surface morphology of the microalgae biomass and elemental distribution was studied through Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopic (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The findings unequivocally corroborates that the novel microalgae inherits immense potential in alleviating the levels of toxic heavy metal, such as Cr(VI) from the hydrosphere at wide range of pH and metal concentrations. The present study provides a workable solution for bioremediation of hazardous heavy metals, in general, and Cr(VI) in specific from the industrial wastes like tannery effluents.

Optimization of cadmium biosorption by Shewanella putrefaciens using a Box-Behnken design

Microbial adsorption of heavy metals has been attracted more interest in the recent years. However, there are very few studies in investigating the biosorption of heavy metals by Shewanella putrefaciens, which is a metal reducing bacterium. Firstly, the effects of contact time, pH value, temperature, biomass dosage and initial cadmium concentration on the cadmium adsorption by Shewanella putrefaciens were studied by single factor experiments. Then, the response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the cadmium adsorption by Shewanella putrefaciens. The results showed that the empirical model was suitable for experimental data, and the maximum cadmium removal efficiency by Shewanella putrefaciens was 86.54% under the optimum conditions of contact time 4.0 days, pH value 5, initial cadmium concentration of 20 mg/L, which was further verified by experiments. In addition, scanning electron microscope - Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS) analysis showed that the bacteria were seriously deformed, and a "bamboo" shape was observed on the surface which consisted of cadmium according to the EDS analysis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis was used to evaluate the possible functional groups involving in interaction between cells and metal ions. The results showed that the distribution of cadmium on the cell surface was related to the carboxyl, amide, hydroxyl and phosphoric acid groups of Shewanella putrefaciens. These studies can provide a comprehensive understanding of the process and mechanism of microbial removal of heavy metals, and theoretical support for the follow-up practice of using biological adsorbents to remediate heavy metal contaminated soil.

Copper-resistant mechanism of Ochrobactrum MT180101 and its application in membrane bioreactor for treating electroplating wastewater

It is necessary to study the mechanism of resistance to heavy metals in microbiological processes. In this study, Ochrobactrum MT180101 was used as the microbial source of an membrane bioreactor to investigate its degradation efficiency for electroplating wastewater and the copper-resistant mechanism. Meanwhile, excitation emission matrix-parallel factor, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and proteome analyses were applied to explain the comprehensive mechanism of the Ochrobactrum MT180101 resisting heavy metal toxicity. The results indicated that the Ochrobactrum MT180101 resisted heavy metal toxicity with the following pathways: i) binding metal cations on cell wall surfaces, ii) generating microbial products such as protein to chelate and stabilize the metal cations, iii) bio-transporting heavy metals from the intramembrane to the outer membrane by means of intracellular transport, and iv) reducing heavy metals through enzyme-mediated biotransformation. The results ensure that Ochrobactrum MT180101 was a copper-resistant bacterium that can be used in the pretreatment or deep treatment of electroplating wastewater.

Removal of heavy metals from acid mining effluents by hydrolyzed olive cake

The present study aims to solve two major challenges of the current society. On the one hand, it investigated the heavy metal removal from mining wastewater. On the other hand, it proposed an alternative use for olive cake. Firstly, a physic-chemical characterization of real wastewater and hydrolyzed olive cake was carried out. Secondly, a study of the affinity of the material for the different metals (chromium, manganese, copper, zinc, nickel and lead) was performed. The hydrolyzed olive cake showed a low content in ash (3.08%) and in water-soluble compounds (2.80%). The material presented the highest retention capacity for the lead (41.54 mg/g) and the lowest for the manganese (3.57 mg/g). After that, biosorption experiments in fixed-bed column were carried out using mining real water. In order to improve the biosorption capacity, the water pH was raised up to 6. The results were quite satisfactory with respect to others similar studies.

Heavy metal bioaccumulation and cation release by growing Bacillus cereus RC-1 under culture conditions

In an effort to explore the detoxifying mechanisms of B. cereus RC-1 under heavy metal stress, the bioaccumulation by growing cells under varying range of pH, culture time and initial metal concentration were investigated from a perspective of cation release. The maximum removal efficiencies were 16.7%, 38.3%, 81.4% and 40.3% for Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺, respectively, with initial concentrations of 10 mg/L at pH 7.0. In presence of Cu²⁺ or Zn²⁺, large quantities of cations were released into the medium in descending order of Na⁺>K⁺>Ca²⁺>Mg^2+, while bioremoval of the two essential metals Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ was accompanied with cellular Na⁺ and Mg²⁺ uptake from the medium^, respectively. The relative mean contributions of intracellular accumulation to the total removal were approximately 19.6% for Cu²⁺, 12.8% for Zn²⁺, 51.1% for Cd²⁺, and only 4.6% for Pb²⁺. Following exposure at high concentration, B. cereus RC-1 could keep intracellular Cd²⁺ concentrations constant, possibly by means of a Cd-efflux system whose activity coincided with uptake of Na⁺, and reduce intracellular Pb²⁺ concentration due to the effect of Mg²⁺ on limiting Pb²⁺ access to the cells. Cellular morphology, surface functional groups and intracellular trace elements were further investigated by SEM-EDX, TEM-EDX, FTIR and ICP-MS analysis. The phenomena that removal of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ coincided with uptake of Na⁺ and Mg²⁺, respectively, inspires a novel research perspective towards the study of protective mechanism of bacterial cells against the toxicity of heavy metals.
