Characterization of PBDEs in soils and vegetations near an e-waste recycling site in South China

Occurrence and ecotoxicological impacts of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in electronic waste (e-waste) in Africa: Options for sustainable and eco-friendly management strategies

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are persistent contaminants used as flame retardants in electronic products. PBDEs are contaminants of concern due to leaching and recalcitrance conferred by the stable and hydrophobic bromide residues. The near absence of legislatures and conscious initiatives to tackle the challenges of PBDEs in Africa has allowed for the indiscriminate use and consequent environmental degradation. Presently, the incidence, ecotoxicity, and remediation of PBDEs in Africa are poorly elucidated. Here, we present a position on the level of contamination, ecotoxicity, and management strategies for PBDEs with regard to Africa. Our review shows that Africa is inundated with PBDEs from the proliferation of e-waste due to factors like the increasing growth in the IT sector worsened by the procurement of second-hand gadgets. An evaluation of the fate of PBDEs in the African environment reveals that the environment is adequately contaminated, although reported in only a few countries like Nigeria and Ghana. Ultrasound-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and Soxhlet extraction coupled with specific chromatographic techniques are used in the detection and quantification of PBDEs. Enormous exposure pathways in humans were highlighted with health implications. In terms of the removal of PBDEs, we found a gap in efforts in this direction, as not much success has been reported in Africa. However, we outline eco-friendly methods used elsewhere, including microbial degradation, zerovalent iron, supercritical fluid, and reduce, reuse, recycle, and recovery methods. The need for Africa to make and implement legislatures against PBDEs holds the key to reduced effect on the continent.

The role of iron materials in the abiotic transformation and biotransformation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): A review

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), widely used as flame retardants, easily enter the environment, thus posing environmental and health risks. Iron materials play a key role during the migration and transformation of PBDEs. This article reviews the processes and mechanisms of adsorption, degradation, and biological uptake and transformation of PBDEs affected by iron materials in the environment. Iron materials can effectively adsorb PBDEs through hydrophobic interactions, π-π interactions, hydrogen/halogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, coordination interactions, and pore filling interactions. In addition, they are beneficial for the photodegradation, reduction debromination, and advanced oxidation degradation and debromination of PBDEs. The iron material-microorganism coupling technology affects the uptake and transformation of PBDEs. In addition, iron materials can reduce the uptake of PBDEs in plants, affecting their bioavailability. The species, concentration, and size of iron materials affect plant physiology. Overall, iron materials play a bidirectional role in the biological uptake and transformation of PBDEs. It is necessary to strengthen the positive role of iron materials in reducing the environmental and health risks caused by PBDEs. This article provides innovative ideas for the rational use of iron materials in controlling the migration and transformation of PBDEs in the environment.

Use of machine learning to identify key factors regulating volatilization of semi-volatile organic chemicals from soil to air

Volatilization from soil to air is a key process driving the distribution and fate of semi-volatile organic contaminants. However, quantifying this process and the key environmental governing factors remains difficult. To address this issue, the volatilization fluxes of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) from soil were determined in 16 batch experiments orthogonally with six variables (chemical property, soil concentration, air velocity, ambient temperature, soil porosity, and soil moisture) and analyzed with machine learning methods. The results showed that gradient-boosting regression tree models satisfactorily predicted the volatilization fluxes of PBDEs (r2 = 0.82 ± 0.07) and OPEs (r2 = 0.62 ± 0.13). Permutation importance analysis showed that partitioning potential of chemicals between soil and air was the most important factor regulating the volatilization of the target compounds from soil. Temperature and soil porosity played a secondary role in controlling the migration of PBDEs and OPEs, respectively, due to higher volatilization enthalpies of PBDEs than those of OPEs and dominant adsorption of OPEs on mineral surface. The effect of soil moisture was negative and positive for the volatilization fluxes of PBDEs and OPEs, respectively. These results suggested different responses in the soil-air diffusive transport of PBDEs and OPEs to high temperature and rainstorm induced by climate change.

Assessment of legacy and alternative halogenated organic pollutants in outdoor dust and soil from e-waste sites in Nigeria: Concentrations, patterns, and implications for human exposure

E-waste is often processed informally, particularly in developing countries, resulting in the release of harmful chemicals into the environment. This study investigated the co-occurrence of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including legacy and alternative halogenated flame retardants (10 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), syn and anti-dechlorane plus (DP)), 32 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 12 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), in 20 outdoor dust and 49 soil samples from 7 e-waste sites in Nigeria. This study provides the first report on alternative flame retardants (DBDPE and DP) in Nigeria. The total concentration range of the selected classes of compounds was in the order: ∑10PBDEs (44-12300 ng/g) > DBDPE (4.9-3032 ng/g) > ∑2DP (0.7-278 ng/g) > ∑32PCBs (4.9-148 ng/g) > ∑12OCPs (1.9-25 ng/g) for dust, and DBDPE (4.9-9647 ng/g) > ∑10PBDEs (90.3-7548 ng/g) > ∑32PCBs (6.1-5025 ng/g) > ∑12OCPs (1.9-250 ng/g) > ∑2DP (2.1-142 ng/g) for soil. PBDEs were the major contributors to POP pollution at e-waste dismantling sites, while PCBs were the most significant contributors at e-waste dumpsites. DBDPE was found to be significantly associated with pollution at both e-waste dismantling and dumpsites. Estimated daily intake (EDI) via dust and soil ingestion and dermal adsorption routes ranged from 1.3 to 2.8 ng/kg bw/day and 0.2-2.9 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. In the worst-case scenario, EDI ranged from 2.9 to 10 ng/kg bw/day and 0.8-5.8 ng/kg bw/day for dust and soil, respectively. The obtained intake levels posed no non-carcinogenic risk, but could increase the incidence of cancer at some of the studied e-waste sites, with values exceeding the USEPA cancer risk lower limit (1.0 × 10-6). Overall, our results suggest that e-waste sites act as emission point sources of POPs.

Preferential association of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with soil colloids at an e-waste recycling site: Implications for risk of PAH migration to subsurface environment

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination at e-waste recycling sites poses high ecological and human-health risks. Of note, PAHs in surface soils can be mobilized through colloid-facilitated transport, and may migrate into the subsurface and pollute groundwater. Here, we show that the colloids released from the soil samples at an e-waste recycling site in Tianjin, China contain high concentrations of PAHs, with total concentrations of 16 PAHs as high as 1520 ng/g dw. Preferential association of the PAHs with the colloids is observed, with the distribution coefficients of PAHs between colloids and bulk soil often above 10. Source diagnostic ratios show that soot-like particles are the main source of PAHs at the site, due to the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biomass, and electronic wastes during the e-waste dismantling practices. Due to their small sizes, a large fraction of these soot-like particles can be remobilized as colloids, and this explains the preferential association of PAHs with colloids. Moreover, the colloids-soil distribution coefficients are higher for the low-molecular-weight PAHs than for the high-molecular-weight ones, possibly attributable to the different binding routes/modes of these two groups of PAHs to the particles during combustion. Notably, the preferential association of PAHs with colloids is even more pronounced for the subsurface soils, corroborating that the presence of PAHs in the deeper soils is primarily the results of downward migration of PAH-bearing colloids. The findings highlight the important role of colloids as a vector for the subsurface transport of PAHs at e-waste recycling sites, and call for further understanding of colloid-facilitated transport of PAHs at e-waste recycling sites.

Biomagnification and elimination effects of persistent organic pollutants in a typical wetland food web from South China

This study investigated the quantitative sources of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), their biomagnification factors, and their effect on POP biomagnification in a typical waterbird (common kingfisher, Alcedo atthis) food web in South China. The median concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in kingfishers were 32,500 ng/g lw and 130 ng/g lw, respectively. The congener profiles of PBDEs and PCBs showed significant temporal changes because of the restriction time points and biomagnification potential of different contaminants. The concentrations of most bioaccumulative POPs, such as CBs 138 and 180 and BDEs 153 and 154, decreased at lower rates than those of other POPs. Pelagic fish (metzia lineata) and benthic fish (common carp) were the primary prey of kingfishers, as indicated by quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) results. Pelagic and benthic prey species were the primary sources of low and high hydrophobic contaminants for kingfishers, respectively. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) and trophic magnification factors (TMFs) had parabolic relationships with log K_OW, with peak values of approximately 7. Significant negative correlations were found between the whole-body elimination rates of POPs in waterbirds and the log-transformed TMFs and BMFs, indicating that the strong metabolism of waterbirds could potentially affect POP biomagnification.

Uptake, accumulation, and translocation of organophosphate esters and brominated flame retardants in water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes): A field study

Mechanisms underlying the plant uptake, accumulation, and translocation of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in field environments remain ambiguous. To better understand these processes, we selected a typically polluted river with steady flow and rampant water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and investigated 25 OPEs and 23 BFRs in 24 sets of matched water-plant samples. Both OPEs and BFRs showed high or ultra-high levels in field water hyacinths, statistically positive water-plant/root concentration correlations, and dominant distributions in the roots. Passive root uptake was the dominant route for OPEs and BFRs to enter the water hyacinth. Both OPEs and BFRs in water hyacinth exhibited acropetal translocation from the root and possible basipetal translocation from the leaf. The accumulation and translocation of OPEs in water hyacinth were significantly affected by their substituents and structures, including the chlorination degree, alkyl chain length, side chain, and methylation degree of aryl-substituted OPEs. The translocation of BFRs in water hyacinth also showed close association with their bromination degree, but their accumulation in roots showed anomaly, indicating possible transformations. Overall, the enrichment and behavior of OPEs and BFRs in water hyacinth seemed to be mainly controlled by physicochemical parameters. OPE/BFR concentrations in total suspended particulate (TSP), TSP-associated organic carbon content, TSP concentration, and plant biomass all showed significant effects on their root accumulation and translocations in water hyacinth. This study provides rare field evidences and novel insights into the basipetal translocation of OPEs and BFRs in plants.

The Spatial Distribution and Potential Risk Assessment of POPs in Farmland around a Typical E-Waste Dismantling Site

Pollution from electronic-waste (E-waste) dismantling is of great concern. This study investigated the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in 253 cropland soil samples around an abandoned E-waste dismantling site in Taizhou city, Zhejiang province in China, using an analytical method which simultaneously extracted, purified and determined the identity and quantity of the three types of persistent organic pollutants. Meanwhile, their spatial distributions, pollution characteristics, and risk assessments were further analyzed. Total PCBs in the test soils ranged from below method detection limits (ND) to 2985.25 μg kg^-1 on a dry weight basis (d.w.), and the spatial distribution indicated a "hot spot" of PCBs pollution in the study area. The PAHs were detected in all samples with total concentrations ranging from 4.99 to 2723.06 μg kg^-1 d.w. The distribution of PBDEs showed the pollution characteristics of "family-run workshops", with a total content range of ND ~ 899.34 μg kg^-1 d.w., of which BDE209 was typically the dominant congener, accounting for 74.05% of the total PBDEs content in the test soils, with the highest content reaching 857.72 μg kg^-1 d.w. Results showed that the ecological and lifetime carcinogenic risks of PCBs and PAHs were low in the study area, but the health risk caused by oral ingestion and dermal contact accounted for the highest proportion of the total exposure risks, while inhalation could be ignored. PBDEs in soils of the study area were a potential chronic non-carcinogenic risk, particularly for children. Therefore, in order to protect human health and environment, it is necessary to regulate the management of E-waste dismantling sites and pollution control.

The Typical Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) and Heavy Metals Distributions in a Formal e-Waste Dismantling Site

Understanding the release of pollutants from the formal e-waste dismantling site could provide the basic information and potential risk to guide the normative regulation of the process. In this study, the distribution of typical polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and heavy metals in a relocating site of a formal e-waste dismantling company was firstly investigated down to the saturated zone, with a maximum depth of 3.0 m. The mean concentrations of Σ₁₃PBDEs were ranged from 2.815 to 7.178 ng/g, with a peak value of 7.178 ng/g in storage area. BDE-209 was the predominant congener of PBDEs in the soil, with the value ranged from 1.688 to 2.483 ng/g. A higher pollution of PBDEs and HMs was presented in the storage area. The risk assessment of PBDEs mostly posed a low environmental risk (RQ ≤ 0.01) and pentaBDE was found to be the most harmful driver for the potential environmental risk.

Exposure and Risk Assessment of Korean Firefighters to PBDEs and PAHs via Fire Vehicle Dust and Personal Protective Equipment

In this study, the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were characterized in firefighters' personal protective equipment (PPE) (i.e., jackets, pants, hoods, and gloves) and vehicle dust wipe samples to assess the exposure and potential risk of firefighters to these combustion-related toxic pollutants. The mean levels of ∑PBDEs in the fire vehicle dust samples (778 and 449 pg/cm² for pump trucks and command cars, respectively) were significantly higher than those in the private vehicles (31.2 pg/cm²) (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.05), which was similar to the ∑PAH levels (521, 185, and 46.8 pg/cm² for pump trucks, command cars, and private vehicles, respectively). In the case of firefighters' PPE, the levels of ∑PBDEs and ∑PAHs in used jackets and pants were found to be, respectively, 70- to 2242-folds and 11- to 265-folds higher than those in their unused counterparts. Biomass/petroleum combustion was found to be the main source of PAH contamination in fire vehicle dust and used PPE in the present study. Both carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks via vehicle dust ingestion and dermal absorption from wearing of PPE were within permissible limits, although the relative risk evaluation showed that PAH/PBDE absorption via wearing of PPE could pose a higher likelihood of carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks than the ingestion of pollutants via fire vehicle dust, warranting the need for appropriate management of firefighters' personal protective ensembles.

Key factors controlling colloids-bulk soil distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) at an e-waste recycling site: Implications for PBDE mobility in subsurface environment

Accumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in surface soils at elevated concentrations is common at e-waste recycling sites. Even though highly insoluble, migration of PBDEs into the vadose zone and groundwater is possible, due to their association with soil colloids. Here, we show that upon equilibration with artificial rainwater surface and subsurface soil samples collected at an e-waste recycling site release significant quantities of colloids, with the total concentrations of 14 PBDE congeners as high as 990 ng/g dw. The concentrations of different congeners vary markedly in the colloids, and that of BDE-209 is the highest in all the samples. Notably, even the colloids released from the soil collected at a depth of 95-105 cm contain high concentrations of PBDEs. Preferential binding of PBDEs to soil colloids is observed, with the colloids-soil distribution coefficients above 10 in certain cases. The extent of preferential binding displays no apparent correlation with the relative hydrophobicity of the PBDEs, nor can it be explained simply by considering the higher specific surface area, pore volume, and clay content of the soil colloids than the respective bulk soil. Principal component analysis shows that multiple soil properties are collectively responsible for the preferential distribution of PBDEs. Specifically, the differences in pore volume, soil organic carbon content, and pore size between colloids and soils are likely the major factors affecting the distribution of high-concentration PBDEs, whereas the differences in clay content, pore volume and specific surface area are the key factors affecting the distribution of low-concentration PBDEs. The findings clearly show that colloids are an important medium with which PBDEs are associated at contaminated sites, and underline the need of understanding colloid-facilitated transport of PBDEs at e-waste sites.

Toxic chemicals from uncontrolled e-waste recycling: Exposure, body burden, health impact

Uncontrolled electronic-waste (e-waste) recycling processes have induced serious environmental pollution and human health impacts. This paper reviewed studies on the wide range of toxic chemicals through the use of primitive recycling techniques, their transfer to various ecological compartments, and subsequent health impacts. Results indicated that local food items were heavily polluted by the pollutants emitted, notably heavy metals in vegetables, rice, fish and seafood, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in livestock. Dietary exposure is the most important exposure pathway. The associations between exposure to e-waste and high body burdens of these pollutants were evident. It seems apparent that toxic chemicals emitted from e-waste activities are causing a number of major illnesses related to cardiovascular, digestive and respiratory systems, according to the information provided by a local hospital (Taizhou, an e-waste recycling hot spot in China). More epidemiological data should be made available to the general public. It is envisaged that there are potential dangers of toxic chemicals passing on to the next generation via placental transfer and lactation. There is a need to monitor the development and health impacts of infants and children, born and brought up in the e-waste sites.

Release, transformation, and risk factors of polybrominated diphenyl ethers from landfills to the surrounding environments: A review

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) serve as brominated flame retardants when added to various products. When these products reach their end of life, a large amount of domestic waste containing PBDEs enters the landfills. Given their weak chemical bonds, they are easily affected by physical, chemical, and biological processes. These processes result in their release and the subsequent contamination of the surrounding soil, groundwater, and atmosphere, causing harm to humans and ecosystems. However, despite the progress made in the research of PBDEs over the years, understanding of the environmental behavior and fate of pollutants is still limited. With the development of cities, the release of PBDEs in old landfills will gradually increase the risk to the surrounding environment. Here we review the biological and nonbiological transformation of PBDEs and their derivatives in landfills and surrounding areas, as well as their distribution in soil, groundwater, and atmosphere. Specifically, this review aims to provide insights into the following aspects: 1) the biological (plant, animal, and microbial) and nonbiological (metal catalysis and photodegradation) conversion of PBDEs and their derivatives in landfills and surrounding areas; 2) the distribution of landfill-sourced PBDEs in the soil, groundwater, atmosphere and cross-media migration; and 3) suggestions and future research directions for the management and control of PBDEs in landfills.

Plant accumulation and transformation of brominated and organophosphate flame retardants: A review

Plants can take up and transform brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) from soil, water and the atmosphere, which is of considerable significance to the geochemical cycle of BFRs and OPFRs and their human exposure. However, the current understanding of the plant uptake, translocation, accumulation, and metabolism of BFRs and OPFRs in the environment remains very limited. In this review, recent studies on the accumulation and transformation of BFRs and OPFRs in plants are summarized, the main factors affecting plant accumulation from the aspects of root uptake, foliar uptake, and plant translocation are presented, and the metabolites and metabolic pathways of BFRs and OPFRs in plants are analyzed. It was found that BFRs and OPFRs can be taken up by plants through partitioning to root lipids, as well as through gaseous and particle-bound deposition to the leaves. Their microscopic distribution in roots and leaves is important for understanding their accumulation behaviors. BFRs and OPFRs can be translocated in the xylem and phloem, but the specific transport pathways and mechanisms need to be further studied. BFRs and OPFRs can undergo phase I and phase II metabolism in plants. The identification, quantification and environmental fate of their metabolites will affect the assessment of their ecological and human exposure risks. Based on the issues mentioned above, some key directions worth studying in the future are proposed.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) concentrations in soil and plants around municipal dumpsites in Abuja, Nigeria

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are listed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Stockholm Convention. It has been established that PBDEs may be released into the environment during improper handling and disposal of e-waste and other products containing PBDEs that is prevalent in developing countries. This research work assessed the status of PBDE contamination at dumpsites in Nigeria. Soil and edible plant samples were collected from the dumpsites and control sites for analysis. The concentrations of ∑₇PBDE in the topsoils around the dumpsites at 0-15 cm depth ranged from 112 to 366 ng/g dry weight (dw) while that of the topsoil of the control site 500 m from the dumpsite ranged from 26.8 to 39.7 ng/g dw. These high concentrations stem likely from open burning of waste including electronic waste on the landfills. Plant samples (bentgrass, spinach, tomatoes, pumpkin and sweet potatoes) around the dumpsites were found to be contaminated by PBDEs with levels ranging from 25.0 to 60.5 ng/g dw in plant roots and from 8.45 to 32.2 ng/g dw in plant shoots for ∑₇PBDE. This suggests that consumption of vegetables by humans and ingestion of contaminated soils and feed by chickens and cows can transfer PBDEs into the human food chain around the dumpsites. The comparison of PBDE levels in soils and the PBDE levels in chicken eggs from the former study indicate that PBDE levels in the soils are sufficient to explain the levels in the chicken eggs with a reasonable carry-over rate for PBDEs of 0.28 on average. The PBDE contamination in the soil was sufficient to result in a relevant exposure of humans via accumulation in eggs. The study shows that a better management of end-of-life products containing PBDEs is needed to reduce PBDE exposure risk in Africa.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in soils from Tianjin, North China: distribution, health risk, and temporal trends

Available information is still insufficient for a comprehensive understanding of the global distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the environment. In particular, little is known about the changing trend of their distribution in urban soils. We conducted a survey of 21 PBDEs in urban soils from Tianjin, China. The chemicals were widely present in the area and summed concentrations ranged from 0.65 to 108 ng/g in soil, indicating low to moderate levels of pollution relative to other areas. BDE-209 was the predominant congener, contributing 88.9% of the concentrations of total soil PBDEs. Source assessment indicated that soil PBDEs in the area were mainly derived from the release of commercial deca-BDE from local industrial production processes and consumer products. We found that the soil concentrations of PBDEs appear to have declined in recent years, compared with other previous reports in this region. However, more studies are needed on this possible change trend of PBDE pollution, especially its impact on human health, although their calculated non-carcinogenic health risks in this study were low.

Human Health Risk Assessment by Dietary Intake and Spatial Distribution Pattern of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and Dechloran Plus from Selected Cities of Pakistan

A class of intractable bio accumulative halogenated compounds polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was studied. Specifically, PBDEs and dechloran plus (DP) contamination in wheat and the assaulted environment—agricultural soil and dust—from metropolitan cities of Pakistan was the focus. The exposure of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) to humans, their probable toxicological impact on health, source apportionment, and the spatial tendency of BFRs were studied. Chromatographic analysis was performed, and concentrations (ng g⁻¹) of ΣPBDE and ΣDP in soil, dust, and cereal crops were estimated in a range from 0.63 to 31.70 n.d. to 6.32 and n.d. to 3.47, respectively, and 0.11 to 7.05, n.d. to 4.56 and 0.05 to 4.95, respectively. Data analysis of source apportionment reflected that the existence of solid and e-waste sites, long-range transport, urban and industrial fraction can be the potential source of PBDE and DP pollution. Moreover, potential hazardous risks to human health across the study area via the dietary intake of cereal foods were deemed trifling, and were gauged on the basis of existing toxicological data.

Effects of tourmaline catalyzed Fenton-like combined with bioremediation on the migration of PBDEs in soil-plant systems: Soil properties and physiological response of lettuce and selective uptake of PBDEs

A series of pollutants can be removed from soil using a Fenton-like oxidation and biological treatment. As a natural mineral, tourmaline has been used for as a material of Fenton-like reaction. In the present study, the risks of remediation technology tourmaline catalyzed Fenton-like reaction (TCFR) combined with Phanerochaete chrysosporium (TCFR + P) were assessed through measuring soil properties, physiological response of plant, and PBDEs migration from soil to plant. Batch pot experiments showed that the silicon contents, specific surface area and soil pore size of soil in TCFR and 5%TCFR + P groups increased obviously. TCFR and TCFR + P treatments promoted the lettuce growth compared to control. Moreover, chlorophyll content of lettuce in 2%TCFR + P and 5%TCFR + P group increased by 46.74% and 44.57% than that in the CK, respectively. The treatment of 2%TCFR decreased the total concentration of PBDEs in rhizosphere soil and non-rhizosphere soil by 52.0.2% and 64.17%, respectively, after 60 days compared to the soil of CK, and did not prompt the uptake of lower-brominated PBDEs by lettuce. TCFR and TCFR + P can alter the migration of BDE isomers from soil to plant, the ratio of BDE99/BDE100 in lettuce shoots decreased slightly. BDE-99/BDE-100 ratios in the shoots were lower than those in the roots, while BDE153/BDE154 ratios were higher than 1.0 and ratios in shoots were higher than those in roots. Therefore, our findings illustrated that the TCFR could be applied to remediate the agricultural soil, considering the appropriate doses of tourmaline.

Changes in thyroid hormone related proteins and gene expression induced by polychlorinated biphenyls and halogen flame retardants exposure of children in a Chinese e-waste recycling area

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and halogen flame retardants (HFRs) are major pollutants in e-waste recycling area. High internal exposure levels of PCBs and HFRs are harmful to human thyroid hormone (TH) equilibrium. To examine their disrupting effects on TH, we conducted a study on children (n = 114) of an e-waste recycling and a control area in South China. Concentrations of PCBs, HFRs, and TH levels were determined in serum samples. TH related proteins and their corresponding gene were also monitored as markers of such disruption. Levels of these chemicals in the exposed group were much greater than those in the control group. Results of the linear regression and generalized additive model indicated the presence of close relationships between the internal exposure levels and the responses of TH related proteins, gene expression. More extensive exposure concentrations of these chemicals led to higher expression of iodothyronine deiodinase I and decreased the concentrations of thyroid-stimulating hormone, expression of TH receptor α, indicating the exertion of discrepant and even contrary influences on equilibrium of TH, and a compensation of these mechanisms may kept the homeostasis of TH. These results for children warrant further investigation on the health risks of PCBs and HFRs exposure in e-waste area.

Accumulation and translocation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers into plant under multiple exposure scenarios

Plant foliar uptake is an essential part of the overall biogeochemical cycling of semivolatile organic compounds. Chambers were therefore designed to expose wheat to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) via various combinations of exposure routes (i.e., soil, air and particle). Under the simulated scenarios, most of PBDEs in wheat leaves originated from foliar uptake (including gaseous and particle-bound depositions) rather than translocation from root uptake. Our results further revealed that higher brominated PBDEs (h-PBDEs; i.e. hepta- through deca-BDEs) were inclined to enter wheat leaves via particle-bound deposition while gaseous deposition could not be ignored for less-brominated PBDEs (l-PBDEs; i.e., tri- through hexa-BDEs). Sequential extraction of wheat leaf displayed that the transfer velocities of h-PBDEs were lagged behind l-PBDEs during their deposition to leaf cuticle and subsequent erosion to mesophyll, where a large fraction of the target chemicals were ultimately stored (29-93% of total PBDEs burden). Applying McLachlan's framework to our data suggested that the uptake of PBDEs was controlled primarily by kinetically limited gaseous deposition for l-PBDEs and by particle-bound deposition for h-PBDEs. The combined use of exposure chamber measurement and framework provides a robust tool for interpreting the behaviors of PBDEs between the atmosphere and plant foliage.

Distribution and Chiral Signatures of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in Soils and Vegetables around an e-Waste Recycling Site

The distribution and composition of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) within soil-plant systems around a notorious e-waste recycling site were investigated. The average total PCB concentrations in rhizospheric soils (RSs) and nonrhizospheric soils (NRSs) were 2160 and 1270 pg g^-1 dry weight (DW), respectively. PCBs were more enriched in RS than NRS for most vegetable species. PCB accumulation in plant tissues varied greatly among plant cultivars, ranging from 4020 to 14 500 pg g^-1 DW in shoots and from 471 to 24 400 pg g^-1 DW in roots. The compositions of PCBs in soil and plants showed that hexa- and hepta-chlorinated PCBs were preferentially accumulated in soils, while tri- and tetra-PCBs were abundant in plant tissues. These results indicated that low-chlorinated PCBs might be prone to accumulation and transfer within plants, which was confirmed by the relationship between the root concentration factor and octanol-water coefficient. The first eluting enantiomers of PCB 84 and PCB 95 were preferentially transferred between the soil and plants, while the stereoselectivity of PCB 136 varied among plant species. A significant difference in enantiomeric fractionation of PCB 84 between the soil and roots indicated that enantiomeric enhancement of PCB 84 occurred during its translocation from soil to root, whereas no such difference was observed in these chiral PCBs during their translocation from the root to the shoot.

The relationship between perinatal exposure to dioxins and serum steroid hormone levels in preschool-aged children at an e-waste region in China

Perinatal exposure to dioxins affects steroid hormone synthesis. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the associations between perinatal exposure to dioxins and serum steroid hormone levels in preschool-aged children from an e-waste recycling region in China. In the present study, we enrolled 50 pairs of mothers and infants from the Taizhou, Luqiao region in 2015. Of the 50 pairs of mothers and infants, 42 pairs participated in this study when the children were 4 years old. We measured breast milk dioxin concentrations using high-resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Additionally, we used liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to measure the concentrations of progesterone, testosterone, androstenedione (A-dione), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in serum samples from the 4-year-old children. We used multivariate linear regressions to assess the associations between dioxin congeners and steroid hormones. Results were reported as beta estimates and 95% confidence intervals by bootstrapping. We observed sex-related differences between breast milk dioxins and serum steroid hormone levels in 4-year-old children. An increase in breast milk dioxins was associated with a decrease in testosterone in serum samples from boys. Similarly, an increase in breast milk dioxins was associated with a decrease in progesterone levels in serum samples from girls. However, dioxins were not associated with changes in the levels of testosterone, DHEA, or A-dione in girls. Based on these results, we conclude that perinatal exposure to dioxins modifies steroidogenesis in preschool-aged children. However, the long-term impact of dioxins requires further large-scale studies to assess these effects in school-going children and adolescents.

Transfer of POP-BFRs within e-waste plastics in recycling streams in China

Due to the rapid increase of e-waste plastics and the national policy's strong preference for mechanical recycling, a substantial amount of POP-BFRs is flowing into recycling streams in China. Therefore, confronting with the worldwide prohibition in manufacturing and consumption, identifying the transfer and inventory of POP-BFRs in recycling stage has become the key to their effective management and elimination. In this study, the level of PBDEs in e-waste housings, recycled plastics and daily-use products from recycling facilities and the commodity market was determined, and a gradual decrease of PBDEs was observed along with the downstream life cycle, indicating that recycling is a crucial medium of POP-BFRs transferred from their original use to an expansive reutilization market. Based on that, an extrusion experiment was conducted to imitate the mechanical recycling of e-waste plastics. It was found that, about 77% of PBDEs and 39% of HBCD were retained in recycled materials, with levels comparable to those in the products from recycling manufacturers and the consumer market. Mechanical recycling had no effect on the predominance of highly brominated BDE congeners, and no obvious transformation from higher to lower brominated diphenyl ethers was observed in recycled materials under thermal conditions; however, the isomerization of γ-HBCD brought about a noticeable increase in the relative abundance of α-HBCD. According to a Monte Carlo method estimation by using the transfer rate, approximately 235-687.8 tons of PBDEs have entered into recycling streams annually in the most recent five years. The field survey, laboratory findings and model evaluation results obtained in this study would not only contribute to a broader understanding of POP-BFRs sources and impact scopes posed on human health and the environment, but also provide a basis for developing effective strategies to manage POP-BFRs from the recycling perspective.

Analyzing the intention of the households to drop off mobile phones to the collection boxes: empirical study in Malaysia

Purpose

To achieve proper waste management, the disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) is one suitable method. Most developing countries, including Malaysia, are facing lack of e-waste recycling facilities and low household participation. Using a survey method using a questionnaire, this study aims to examine the intention of Malaysian households to drop-off their mobile phones to the nearest collection boxes (n= 600).

Design/methodology/approach

This study expanded the theory of planned behavior by adding environmental awareness and knowledge. In addition, the cost of disposal and the convenience of the available disposal infrastructure were measured as two parts of the perceived behavioral control.

Findings

The results of this study show that environmental knowledge and awareness have a significant impact on attitudes toward recycling intention of the households. In addition, it was also found that the attitude and cost of disposal infrastructure is positively related to household intention.

Originality/value

These results show that if e-waste collection boxes are provided to the nearest community and e-waste management information is distributed, this will increase household participation in e-waste management.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and alternative halogenated flame retardants in mangrove plants from Futian National Nature Reserve of Shenzhen City, South China

Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) are ubiquitous in the environment, but little information is available about the bioaccumulation of HFRs in mangrove plants. In this study, three mangrove plant species were collected from Futian National Nature Reserve of Shenzhen City, South China to investigate the bioaccumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and several alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs), including decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromotoluene (PBT), tetrabromop-xylene (pTBX), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) and dechlorane plus (DP). The mean concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE, pTBX, PBT, PBEB, HBB and DP in mangrove plant species were 2010, 1870, 36.2, 18.7, 40.1, 17.8, 9.68 and 120 pg g^-1 dry weight, respectively. PBDEs were the dominant HFRs in mangrove plant tissues, followed by DBDPE. The relative abundance of BDE 209 in three mangrove plant tissues were much lower than those in sediments. Significant negative relationships between log root bioaccumulation factors and log K_ow, and between log TF_r-s (from root to stem) and log K_ow were observed, indicating that HFRs with low hydrophobicity were easily absorbed by mangrove roots and stems. A positive correlation between log TF_s-l (from stem to leaf) and log K_ow were found, suggesting that air-leaf exchange may occur in mangrove plants. This study highlights the uptake of HFRs by mangrove plants, which can be used as remediation for HFRs contamination in the environment.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in the soil-crop-atmosphere system in e-waste dismantling areas in Taizhou: Concentrations, congener profiles, uptake, and translocation

Samples of soil, air, and locally grown crops from around an old e-waste dismantling area (Fengjiang) and a new e-waste dismantling area (Binhai) in Taizhou were analyzed to investigate the behavior of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) released during e-waste dismantling in the soil-crop-atmosphere system. The results indicated that PCB pollution is still widespread in the study area. The PCB concentrations were clearly higher in soil from FJ than in soil from BH, and the concentrations in the functional zones decreased strongly in the order industry park > residential area > farmland. Historical and current emissions during e-waste dismantling processes are probably the main sources of PCBs to soil because PCB production and use are banned. The long half-lives of PCBs have caused the target congener concentrations in soil not to decrease markedly over 10 years. The "halo effect" may have caused PCBs in soil in the heavily polluted FJ area to diffuse into the surrounding area. Soil-air exchange of PCBs in heavily contaminated FJ area may supply PCBs to air because the temperatures in Taizhou are often high. PCBs can accumulate in crops through various pathways. Less-chlorinated PCBs (mainly including Tri-PCBs) can enter crops by root uptake and translocated to the aerial tissues, and more-chlorinated PCBs (including Penta-PCBs and Hexa-PCBs) at high concentrations in soil can enter underground crop tissues through passive transport. More-chlorinated PCBs in underground tissues cannot be transferred to aboveground tissues of tall crops but may be transferred to aboveground tissues of short crops through the root-to-stem pathway and through soil dust being transferred to aboveground external surfaces.

Contamination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in watershed sediments and plants adjacent to e-waste sites

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are one of the persistent toxic organic pollutants in watersheds near electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) sites (EWS). Spatial redistribution, translocation and bioaccumulation of PBDEs in natural sediment-plant ecosystems, however, are still unclear. The contamination and distribution of PBDEs in core sediments and wetland plants from two EWS and two mangrove forest sites (MFS) were investigated. The eight PBDE congeners were all detected in plant tissue and sediment samples, indicating PBDE contamination was common and severe, and their spatial variations were significant. Although sediments from EWS had higher PBDE concentrations than those in MFS, with an extremely high value of 36392 ± 5992 ng g^-1 dw, mangroves could be the sink of PBDEs, as high concentrations (327 ± 48 ng g^-1 dw) were also detected in mangrove sediments. The historical usage of PBDEs was reflected by their distribution in mangrove sediment core but not so in e-waste sediment core. PBDEs were taken up and accumulated in six wetland plants, with more accumulation in mangrove plants. These results demonstrated that PBDEs were not only contaminated in sediments adjacent to e-waste sites but also plant tissues. PBDEs could enter other environments via plant littering and/or herbivorous processes that must not be neglected.

Unintentional persistent organic pollutants in cement kilns co-processing solid wastes

Co-processing solid waste in cement kilns has become increasingly widespread in recent years. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can be unintentionally produced and emitted from cement kilns, especially kilns in which solid waste is co-processed. Unintentionally produced POP formation and emission by cement kilns co-processing solid waste therefore need to be studied in detail to allow the potential risks posed by cement kiln co-processing techniques to be assessed. Many field studies and laboratory simulation experiments have been performed to investigate the formation and release of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). However, the formations, characteristics and emission factors of various emerging unintentionally produced POPs have not been comprehensively reviewed. Here, emissions of well-known unintentionally produced POPs (PCDD/Fs and polychlorinated biphenyls) and emerging unintentionally produced dioxin-like POPs (polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, polychlorinated naphthalenes, and chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in cement kilns co-processing solid waste are reviewed, focusing on formations and influencing factors of those unintentional POPs. Data from field studies indicated that the main stages in which POPs are unintentionally produced in cement kilns co-processing solid waste are the cyclone preheater outlet, suspension preheater boiler, humidifier tower, and back-end bag filter. The raw material composition, chlorine and bromine contents, and temperature are the most important factors affecting POP formation. The homolog distributions and congener profiles of POPs formed unintentionally in cement kilns were compared, and it was found that larger amounts of less-chlorinated homologs than more-chlorinated homologs are emitted. Emission factors for various unintentionally produced POPs for cement kilns co-processing solid waste were summarized, and could be useful for compiling global emission inventories for pollutants covered by the Stockholm Convention. This comprehensive review improves our understanding of unintentional production and emissions of POPs by cement kilns co-processing solid waste.

Could mangrove plants tolerate and remove BDE-209 in contaminated sediments upon long-term exposure?

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) such as BDE-209, the commonest congener, are known to be toxic. A 24-months study using mangrove mesocosms with mixed mangrove species, namely Avicennia marina (Am), Aegiceras corniculatum (Ac) and Kandelia obovata (Ko), or without any plant was conducted to examine toxicity, removal, translocation and uptake of BDE-209. At month 24, BDE-209 stimulated the production of root superoxide radical (O₂^-*), and leaf and root malondialdehyde (MDA) of Ko, enhanced leaf O₂^-* of Ac, but did not affect the production of O₂^-* and MDA in Am. These findings indicated that the tolerance to BDE-209 was species-specific, with Am being the most tolerant and Ko the most sensitive species. In leaf and root, BDE-209 stimulated peroxidase (POD) activity in both Ac and Ko, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in Am. After 24-months, more than 60% and 40% of BDE-209 in contaminated sediments were removed in planted and unplanted groups, respectively, with more PBDEs in upper than bottom sediment layers. This study demonstrates that planting tolerant species such as Avicennia marina with high uptake could remedy PBDEs in contaminated sediments.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in soil and dust from plastic production and surrounding areas in eastern of China

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of organic pollutants. They are used as flame retardants that caused worldwide environmental concern. This study investigated the occurrence of PBDEs in soils and dusts from three plastic manufacture plants and surrounding areas in Eastern China. A total of 13 PBDE congeners were detected using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (electron impact ionization). The total concentrations of PBDEs range from 2.21 to 558, 19.7-4916, and 8.70-18,451 ng/g dry weight in the soils of three sampling areas, with mean of 1004 ng/g d w; in dusts, the concentrations range from 7240 to 10,469, 684-4482, and 193-3989 ng/g d w, with an overall mean of 3619 ng/g d w. The most abundant congener is the BDE-209, followed by BDE-153 and BDE-85. This indicates that the brominated flame retardant added in the plastic manufacture is mainly the commodity decabromodiphenyl ether. In comparison with other polluted areas around the world, the PBDE concentrations in the soils of the plastic manufacture plants are similar to those in soils of waste plastic disposal areas and PBDEs production sites, but orders of magnitude higher than those in agricultural soils, mountain soils and rural soils. Daily exposure was estimated using the average concentrations of the pollution sites. The hazard quotient shows that the PBDEs pose considerable human health risks, especially to children, to which attention should be paid.

Biochar combined with compost to reduce the mobility, bioavailability and plant uptake of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether in soil

Biochar application to soil is recognised for its capacity to immobilise pollutants (through sorption) while composted inputs can accelerate the biodegradation of organic pollutants. However, little is known about the influence of combined incorporation on plant uptake of organic pollutants. Therefore, we investigated the effects of maize straw-derived biochar (MSB), compost derived from maize straw and pig manure (SMC), and their combination (MSB-SMC) as soil amendments on bioavailability of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47) and carrot (Daucus carota L.) uptake in a horticultural soil. We found that biochar alone performed well in reducing BDE-47 bioavailability, but was less effective at degrading the pollutant. Conversely, addition of compost stimulated BDE-47 biodegradation. MSB-SMC enhanced BDE-47 biodegradation in soil, reduced contamination of carrot roots, and caused significant reductions in soil extractable BDE-47. The combination of contrasting approaches to remediation thus resulted in the most favorable outcome for a contaminated soil: immobilisation of contaminant from vegetable crops (via biochar) with simultaneous bioremediation of the growing medium. These findings point towards an effective strategy for reducing plant uptake of PDBEs through the combined use of biochar and compost as soil amendment - reducing mobility and facilitating degradation of the accessible contaminant fractions.

Optimization of Sample Pretreatment based on Graphene Oxide Dispersed Acid Silica Gel for Determination of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Vegetables near an E-waste Recycling Plant

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) derived from e-waste dismantling, tend to easily bioaccumulate in vegetables. In this study, an optimized sample pretreatment method based on graphene oxide (GO) dispersed acid silica gel was used to determine PBDEs levels in vegetables. The recovery efficiency of the optimized method ranged between 90.3%-107.5% with the detection limit (LOD) being within 0.17-1.8 ng g^-1. Vegetable samples were grown nearby an e-waste recycling plant in Nanjing, China, and analyzed using the optimized method. The concentrations of ΣPBDEs in the samples ranged from 12.1 to 20.1 ng g^-1. This study developed an optimized sample pretreatment method to determine PBDEs in vegetables nearby e-waste contaminated sites and provides insights on the potential risks derived from e-waste dismantling to the surrounding environment.

Stable-Isotope Probing-Enabled Cultivation of the Indigenous Bacterium Ralstonia sp. Strain M1, Capable of Degrading Phenanthrene and Biphenyl in Industrial Wastewater

To identify and obtain the indigenous degraders metabolizing phenanthrene (PHE) and biphenyl (BP) from the complex microbial community within industrial wastewater, DNA-based stable-isotope probing (DNA-SIP) and cultivation-based methods were applied in the present study. DNA-SIP results showed that two bacterial taxa (Vogesella and Alicyclobacillus) were considered the key biodegraders responsible for PHE biodegradation only, whereas Bacillus and Cupriavidus were involved in BP degradation. Vogesella and Alicyclobacillus have not been linked with PHE degradation previously. Additionally, DNA-SIP helped reveal the taxonomic identity of Ralstonia-like degraders involved in both PHE and BP degradation. To target the separation of functional Ralstonia-like degraders from the wastewater, we modified the traditional cultivation medium and culture conditions. Finally, an indigenous PHE- and BP-degrading strain, Ralstonia pickettii M1, was isolated via a cultivation-dependent method, and its role in PHE and BP degradation was confirmed by enrichment of the 16S rRNA gene and distinctive dioxygenase genes in the DNA-SIP experiment. Our study has successfully established a program for the application of DNA-SIP in the isolation of the active functional degraders from an environment. It also deepens our insight into the diversity of indigenous PHE- and BP-degrading communities.IMPORTANCE The comprehensive treatment of wastewater in industrial parks suffers from the presence of multiple persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which reduce the activity of activated sludge and are difficult to eliminate. Characterizing and applying active bacterial degraders metabolizing multiple POPs therefore helps to reveal the mechanisms of synergistic metabolism and to improve wastewater treatment efficiency in industrial parks. To date, SIP studies have successfully investigated the biodegradation of PAHs or PCBs in real-world habitats. DNA-SIP facilitates the isolation of target microorganisms that pose environmental concerns. Here, an indigenous phenanthrene (PHE)- and biphenyl (BP)-degrading strain in wastewater, Ralstonia pickettii M1, was isolated via a cultivation-dependent method, and its role in PHE and BP degradation was confirmed by DNA-SIP. Our study provides a routine protocol for the application of DNA-SIP in the isolation of the active functional degraders from an environment.

Trends of electronic waste pollution and its impact on the global environment and ecosystem

Electronic waste (e-waste) is used for all electronic/electrical devices which are no more used. Conventionally, waste management policies are desfighandle the traditional waste. Although e-waste contains toxic materials, however, its management is rarely focused by policy makers; therefore, its negative impact on the global environment, ecosystem, and human health is aggravated. The review outlines the categories of e-waste materials, major pollutants including ferrous/non-ferrous metals, plastics, glass, printed circuit boards, cement, ceramic, and rubber beside, some valuable metals (such as copper, silver, gold, platinum). Toxic elements from e-waste materials, released in the air, water, and soil, include arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, and lead, causing pollution. Although their roles in biological systems are poorly identified, however, they possess significant toxic and carcinogenic potential. It is therefore critical to monitor footprint and device strategies to address e-waste-linked issues from manufacturing, exportation, to ultimate dumping, including technology transmissions for its recycling. This review traces a plausible link among e-waste condition at a worldwide dimension, as far as settlement procedures to keep it secure and carefully monitored when traded. Their fate in the three spheres of the earth, i.e., water, soil, and air, impacts human health. The strategies and regulation to handle e-waste generation at the global level have been discussed. Remediation of soil co-contaminated with decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) and copper by enhanced electrokinetics-persulfate process

This work investigated the influences of citric acid and methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MCD) as enhancing agents during the electrokinetics (EK)-persulfate process on the remediation of soil artificially contaminated with decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) and copper (Cu) with an initial concentration of 50 and 1000 mg/kg, respectively. The results clearly demonstrate the efficiency of the process while at the same time, the distribution of the residual contaminants in soil and the EK parameters were greatly influenced by the presence of persulfate, MCD and citric acid. The results show that there was significant removal of BDE-209 and Cu from the soil. MCD-assisted process gave the highest BDE-209 removal (88.6%) and the third largest Cu removal (54.3%) from the soil. Comparatively, the highest Cu removal (92.5%) and the second largest BDE-209 removal (85.6%) were achieved by the joint application of MCD and citric acid in anolyte during the EK-persulfate treatment. MCD and citric acid could increase soil electrical current and electroosmotic flow during EK. The alkalization of soil near cathode was alleviated by the acidic byproducts of persulfate decomposition which could be transported to the soil by electroosmosis and electromigration. This integration process may provide a green efficient technology for remediating co-contaminated soil.

Reducing plant uptake of a brominated contaminant (2,2',4,4'‑tetrabrominated diphenyl ether) by incorporation of maize straw into horticultural soil

Application of crop residues is a conventional practice that contributes to crop production through nutrient returns and other benefits to soil health: driving soil physicochemical and biological functions. However, little is known about the impacts of straw residue incorporation on the bioavailability of organic pollutants and associated changes in microbial community structure in contaminated soils. In this study, maize straw was added to a soil contaminated with a model polybrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47). A pot experiment was conducted and planted with carrot (Daucus carota L.). We found that straw addition greatly reduced the bioavailability of BDE-47, changed the bacterial community structure and affected a range of soil physiochemical properties. Moreover, the amount of BDE-47 that had accumulated in carrot roots and aboveground tissues was significantly reduced. This study may therefore describe an effective agronomic strategy to reduce the bioavailability of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in a soil used to grow high value vegetable crops. This strategy draws on traditional wisdom and shows promise as a practical method to support horticultural production systems, remediate soils, and help to ensure food safety.

Trace metals in e-waste lead to serious health risk through consumption of rice growing near an abandoned e-waste recycling site: Comparisons with PBDEs and AHFRs

Despite the endeavour to eradicate informal e-waste recycling, remediation of polluted sites is not mandatory in many developing countries and thus the hazard of pollutants remaining in soil is often overlooked. It is noteworthy that a majority of previous studies only analysed a few pollutants in e-waste to reflect the impact of informal e-waste recycling. However, the actual impact may have been largely underestimated since e-waste contains various groups of pollutants and the effect of some emerging pollutants in e-waste remains unexplored. Thus, this study examined the contamination of metals, PBDEs and AHFRs in the vicinity of an abandoned e-waste recycling site. The accumulation and translocation of these pollutants in rice plants cultivated at the nearby paddy field were measured to estimate the health risk through rice consumption. We revealed that the former e-waste burning site was still seriously contaminated with some metals (e.g. Sn, Sb and Ag, I_geo > 5), PBDEs (I_geo > 3) and AHFRs (I_geo > 3), which can disperse to the nearby paddy field and stream. The rice plants can effectively absorb some metals (e.g. Mo, Cr and Mn, BCF > 1), but not PBDEs and AHFRs (BCF < 0.15), from soil and translocate them to the leaves. Alarmingly, the health risk through rice consumption was high primarily due to Sb and Sn (HQ > 20), whereas PBDEs and AHFRs had limited contribution (HQ < 0.08). Our results imply that abandoned e-waste recycling sites still act as the pollution source, jeopardising the surrounding environment and human health. Since some trace metals (e.g. Sb and Sn) are seldom monitored, the impact of informal e-waste recycling would be more notorious than previously thought. Remediation work should be conducted promptly in abandoned e-waste recycling sites to protect the environment and human health.

Biphenyl-Metabolizing Microbial Community and a Functional Operon Revealed in E-Waste-Contaminated Soil

Primitive electronic waste (e-waste) recycling activities release massive amounts of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals into surrounding soils, posing a major threat to the ecosystem and human health. Microbes capable of metabolizing POPs play important roles in POPs remediation in soils, but their phylotypes and functions remain unclear. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), one of the main pollutants in e-waste contaminated soils, have drawn increasing attention due to their high persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulation. In the present study, we employed the culture-independent method of DNA stable-isotope probing to identify active biphenyl and PCB degraders in e-waste-contaminated soil. A total of 19 rare operational taxonomic units and three dominant bacterial genera ( Ralstonia, Cupriavidus, and uncultured bacterium DA101) were enriched in the ¹³C heavy DNA fraction, confirming their functions in PCBs metabolism. Additionally, a 13.8 kb bph operon was amplified, containing a bphA gene labeled by ¹³C that was concentrated in the heavy DNA fraction. The tetranucleotide signature characteristics of the bph operon suggest that it originated from Ralstonia. The bph operon may be shared by horizontal gene transfer because it contains a transposon gene and is found in various bacterial species. This study gives us a deeper understanding of PCB-degrading mechanisms and provides a potential resource for the bioremediation of PCBs-contaminated soils.

Multi-component determination of atmospheric semi-volatile organic compounds in soils and vegetation from Tarragona County, Catalonia, Spain

Tarragona County (Spain) is home to the most important chemical/petrochemical industrial complex in Southern Europe, which raises concerns about the presence and effects of the numerous environmental contaminants. In order to assess the levels and patterns of five classes of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) - polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), synthetic musks (SMs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and one organochlorine pesticide, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), 27 samples of soil and vegetation (Piptatherum L.) from different areas (petrochemical, chemical, urban/residential, and background) of Tarragona County were analysed. The results show that PAHs levels in soils ranged from 45.12 to 158.00ng/g and the urban areas presented the highest concentrations, mainly associated with the presence of a nearby highway and several roads with heavy traffic. PAHs levels in vegetation samples ranged from 42.13 to 80.08ng/g, where the greatest influence came from the urban and petrochemical areas. In the case of SMs, levels in soils and vegetation samples ranged from 5.42 to 10.04ng/g and from 4.08 to 17.94ng/g, respectively, and in both cases, background areas (at least 30km away from the main SVOCs emission sources) showed the highest levels, suggesting an influence of the personal care products derived from beach-related tourism in the coast. PCBs (from 6.62 to 14.07ng/g in soils; from 0.52 to 4.41ng/g in vegetation) prevailed in the chemical area in both matrices, probably associated with the presence of two sub-electrical stations located in the vicinities. In general terms, BFRs and HCB values recorded in soil and vegetation samples were quite similar between matrices and sampling areas.

Modeling the Time-Variant Dietary Exposure of PCBs in China over the Period 1930 to 2100

This study aimed for the first time to reconstruct historical exposure profiles for PCBs to the Chinese population, by examining the combined effect of changing temporal emissions and dietary transition. A long-term (1930-2100) dynamic simulation of human exposure using realistic emission scenarios, including primary emissions, unintentional emissions, and emissions from e-waste, combined with dietary transition trends was conducted by a multimedia fate model (BETR-Global) linked to a bioaccumulation model (ACC-HUMAN). The model predicted an approximate 30-year delay of peak body burden for PCB-153 in a 30-year-old Chinese female, compared to their European counterpart. This was mainly attributed to a combination of change in diet and divergent emission patterns in China. A fish-based diet was predicted to result in up to 8 times higher body burden than a vegetable-based diet (2010-2100). During the production period, a worst-case scenario assuming only consumption of imported food from a region with more extensive production and usage of PCBs would result in up to 4 times higher body burden compared to consumption of only locally produced food. However, such differences gradually diminished after cessation of production. Therefore, emission reductions in China alone may not be sufficient to protect human health from PCB-like chemicals, particularly during the period of mass production. The results from this study illustrate that human exposure is also likely to be dictated by inflows of PCBs via the environment, waste, and food.

Translocation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers from field-contaminated soils to an edible plant

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), recognised emerging contaminants, widely exist and persist in the environment. Samples were taken from a heavily contaminated farm in Taiwan located near a factory known to regularly use PBDEs. Sweet potato vines (Ipomoea batatas L., a commonly consumed vegetable in Asia) growing in the surrounding farmlands were found to contain a high concentration of PBDEs of 19.36 ng/g. The possibility of PBDEs translocation into sweet potato vines from soil samples was evaluated. To prevent the PBDEs from air through that factory, the pot experiments were performed in a greenhouse, which showed that the PBDEs concentration of 24 congeners (tri- through deca-BDE) in the sweet potato vine after 14-days cultivation was 29.90 ng/g, 40-times higher than that in the contaminated soil. After another 14-days, the PBDE concentration decreased to 12.30 ng/g as high-brominated PBDEs were transformed to medium- and/or low-brominated PBDEs in the sweet potato vine. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) values exceeded 20.0 for most of the deca-, nona-, and octa-BDEs but BCFs were below 18.9 for the rest of the medium- and low-brominated PBDEs. Our results demonstrate that high-brominated PBDEs can translocate into leafy vegetables from soils, and sweet potato vines tend to accumulate high-brominated PBDEs into their edible parts.

Sorption, mobility, and bioavailability of PBDEs in the agricultural soils: Roles of co-existing metals, dissolved organic matter, and fertilizers

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are common pollutants released from electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling and recycling activities. Our city-wide survey of agricultural soils in Qingyuan (40 sampling sites), where e-waste recycling has been active, observed exceedance of PBDEs above background levels (average of 251.9ngg^-1, 87 times the regional baseline concentration) together with elevated levels of metals/metalloids at the contamination hotspots, such as As (180.4mgkg^-1), Cu (100.7mgkg^-1), Zn (93.4mgkg^-1), Pb (37.8mgkg^-1), Cr (15.1mgkg^-1), and Cd (0.3mgkg^-1). Hence, a twenty-cycle batch sorption test on composite soil samples from the e-waste site was conducted to study the fate of BDE-28 (2,4,4'-tribromodiphenyl ether) and BDE-99 (2,2',4,4',5-pentabromodiphenyl ether) under the influence of co-existing trace elements (TEs) (Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd, which exceeded Chinese Environmental Quality Standard for Soils), dissolved organic matter (extracted from local peat), and locally available commercial fertilizer. The results showed that the presence of TEs barely affected the sorption of BDEs, probably because the low concentration of BDEs in the environment resulted in nearly complete sorption onto the soil. In contrast, metals sorption onto soil was promoted by the presence of BDEs. The mobility of BDE-28 was higher than BDE-99 in water leaching tests, while the leaching concentration of BDE-99 was further reduced in simulated acid rain possibly due to protonation of π-accepting sites in soil organic matter. In the freshly spiked soil, BDEs of greater hydrophobicity and larger molecular size exhibited higher bioavailability (due to greater affinity to Tenax extraction), which was contrary to the field contaminated soil. Similarly, the co-occurrence of metals and fertilizer increased the bioavailability of newly sorbed BDE-99 more than BDE-28 in the soil. These results illustrate the need to holistically assess the fate and interactions of co-existing organic and inorganic pollutants in the agricultural soils.

Rhizospheric effects on the microbial community of e-waste-contaminated soils using phospholipid fatty acid and isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether analyses

We performed the study of rhizospheric effects on soil microbial community structure, including bacteria, fungi, actinomycete, and archaea, at an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling site by analyzing the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) and isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) contents. By comparing PLFA and isoprenoid GDGT profiles of rhizospheric and surrounding bulk soils of 11 crop species, we observed distinct microbial community structures. The total PLFA concentration was significantly higher in rhizospheric soils than in non-rhizospheric soils, whereas no obvious difference was found in the total isoprenoid GDGT concentrations. The microbial community structure was also different, with higher ratios of fungal-to-bacterial PLFAs (F/B) and lower relative abundance of Gram-positive bacteria in rhizospheric soils. The extent of rhizospheric effects varied among plant species, and Colocasia esculenta L. had the greatest positive effects on the total microbial biomass. Dissolved organic carbon and pH were the main environmental factors affecting the microbial community represented by PLFAs, while the archaeal community was influenced by copper and zinc in all soils. These results offer a comprehensive view of rhizospheric effects on microbes in heavy metal and persistent organic pollutant co-contaminated soil, and provide fundamental knowledge regarding microbial ecology in e-waste-contaminated soils.

A Comparison of Concentrations and Congener Patterns of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Seasonally Sampled Outdoor Air from a Farmland Area in Guangzhou, South China

To investigate the concentration and congener patterns of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in outdoor air from farmland area, air samples were collected using passive and active sample methods from April to November 2012, in an e-waste dismantling town in the Guangzhou region of South China. The sum of gaseous and particulate PBDE concentrations averaged 74.26 pg/m³ and ranged between 3.24 and 247.30 pg/m³, while the mean gaseous and particulate PBDEs were 19.20 and 55.07 pg/m³, respectively. The PBDE level was comparable to those in urban air of non-electric waste areas, but much lower than those in both indoor and outdoor air of e-waste dismantling workshop area. Dominant congeners were BDE-47 and BDE-28 for the gaseous phase and BDE-209 and BDE-99 for the particulate phase. Relationship analysis showed that soil PBDEs were more significantly correlated with passive samples than with active samples, indicating that passive sample pattern could capture the accumulative effect of the sampling period and better represent the extent of soil contamination.

Phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with Cd and BDE-209 using hyperaccumulator enhanced by AM fungi and surfactant

Pot experiments were conducted to investigate the uptake and translocation of both Cd and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) in Solanum nigrum, under the treatments of two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi [AMF, Funneliformis mosseae (FM) and Rhizophagus intraradices (RI)] and surfactant β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Results showed that S. nigrum treated with either FM or β-CD significantly elevated shoot biomass and Cd concentrations and contents in shoots. The concentrations of BDE-209 in shoots and the dissipation and debromination efficiencies of BDE-209 in soil were significantly enhanced in S. nigrum treated with β-CD, inoculated with or without AMF. Moreover, significant positive correlations were found between the BDE-209 dissipation efficiency, the BDE-209 concentrations and contents in roots, and the soil enzymatic activities (polyphenol oxidase or dehydrogenase activities) and between the Cd and BDE-209 contents in shoots or roots. Higher concentrations of lower-brominated products and total PBDEs were detected in shoots than in roots suggesting that BDE-209 might be initially absorbed by roots, then translocated to shoots, and then degraded into lower brominated products in shoots. Considering the plant uptake of Cd and BDE-209 and the efficient removal of those chemicals in soils, the combination of S. nigrum and β-CD inoculated with or without AMF may be viable alternatives for phytoremediation of the co-contaminated soil.

Effects of biochar on phytotoxicity and translocation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticle-treated soil

In this study, soil culture experiments were conducted to explore the effects of biochar-supported Ni/Fe nanoparticles on the accumulation and translocation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in soil-plant system and its phytotoxicity to Brassica chinensis. Compared with those in BDE209 contaminated soils (S ₁) and Ni/Fe nanoparticle-treated soil (S ₃), the plant biomass, root, and shoot lengths in biochar-supported Ni/Fe nanoparticle-treated soil (S ₄) were increased by 23 mg, 1.35 cm, and 2.08 cm and 27.2 mg, 1.75 cm, and 2.52 cm, respectively, suggesting that the phytotoxicity in S ₄ treatment was significantly decreased. Moreover, in all treatments, the contents of BDE209, the total PBDEs, Ni, and Fe in sample plant tissues of S ₄ were the lowest. In addition, the superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase activities in S ₄ treatment were found to decrease by 33.8, 47.2, and 24.1%, respectively, compared to those in S ₃. Results also showed that biochar addition not only reduced the uptake of PBDEs and heavy metals but also effectively improve soil fertility and reduce the leachability of Ni and Fe caused by Ni/Fe. Finally, the translocation factors (TFs) of PBDEs in four treatments followed the orders as S ₁ > S ₃ > S ₄ > S ₂, indicating that biochar has an inhibition effects on PBDE translocation in the plants. In summary, all of the results suggested that the phytotoxicity, translocation of PBDEs, and the negative effects caused by neat Ni/Fe nanoparticles in B. chinensis were decreased as a result of the effects of the biochar.

Remediation of electronic waste polluted soil using a combination of persulfate oxidation and chemical washing

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the efficiency of a simultaneous chemical extraction and oxidation for removing persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and toxic metals from an actual soil polluted by the recycling activity of electronic waste. Various chemicals, including hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD), citric acid (CA) and sodium persulfate (SP) were applied synchronously with Fe²⁺ activated oxidation to enhance the co-removal of both types of pollutants. It is found that the addition of HPCD can enhance POPs removal through solubilization of POPs and iron chelation; while the CA-chelated Fe²⁺ activation process is effective for extracting metals and degrading residual POPs. Under the optimized reagent conditions, 69.4% Cu, 78.1% Pb, 74.6% Ni, 97.1% polychlorinated biphenyls, 93.8% polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and 96.4% polybrominated diphenylethers were removed after the sequential application of SP-HPCD-Fe²⁺ and SP-CA-Fe²⁺ processes with a duration of 180 and 240 min, respectively. A high dehalogenation efficiency (84.8% bromine and 86.2% chlorine) is observed, suggesting the low accumulation of halogen-containing organic intermediates. The remediated soil can satisfy the national soil quality standard of China. Collectively, co-contaminated soil can be remediated with reasonable time and capital costs through simultaneous application of persulfate oxidation and chemical extraction.

E-Waste Driven Pollution in Pakistan: The First Evidence of Environmental and Human Exposure to Flame Retardants (FRs) in Karachi City

Informal e-waste recycling activities have been shown to be a major emitter of organic flame retardants (FRs), contributing to both environmental and human exposure to laborers at e-waste recycling sites in some West African countries, as well as in China and India. The main objective of this study was to determine the levels of selected organic FRs in both air and soil samples collected from areas with intensive informal e-waste recycling activities in Karachi, Pakistan. Dechlorane Plus (DP) and "novel" brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were often detected in high concentrations in soils, while phosphorus-based FRs (OPFRs) dominated atmospheric samples. Among individual substances and substance groups, decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) (726 ng/g), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) (551 ng/g), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE) (362 ng/g), and triphenyl-phosphate (∑TPP) (296 ng/g) were found to be prevalent in soils, while OPFR congeners (5903-24986 ng/m³) were prevalent in air. The two major e-waste recycling areas (Shershah and Lyari) were highly contaminated with FRs, suggesting informal e-waste recycling activities as a major emission source of FRs in the environment in Karachi City. However, the hazards associated with exposure to PM_2.5 appear to exceed those attributed to exposure to selected FRs via inhalation and soil ingestion.
