Gas-particle phase partitioning and particle size distribution of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in haze

Identification and seasonal variation of specific particulate bound (halogenated) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in air from different metal industrial parks in Northwest China

During the process of industrial heating, a large amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their halogenated compounds (Cl/Br-PAHs) can be formed. However, there is still limited understanding of the chemicals from different metal smelting industrial parks. This study evaluated the seasonal variations, composition profiles, and source allocations of the atmospheric particulate-bound PAHs and Cl/Br-PAHs in different metal industrial parks in a typical industrial city in northwest China. The results showed that the main PAHs produced by metal smelting were low molecular weight isomers, and the concentrations of Cl-PAHs were lower compared to Br-PAHs. The main Br-PAHs were 1-Br-Pyr and 4-Br-Pyr, while 9-Cl-Fle, 1-Cl-Pyr, and 6-Cl-BaP were the dominated Cl-PAH isomers. No significant difference was found in the concentrations among the sites, whereas the levels of the target chemicals were higher during cold months compared to warm months. The main source of PAHs was coal combustion and gasoline vehicle emission during metal smelting, and that of Cl/Br-PAHs was also industrial coal burning. In addition to the primary source, the secondary chlorination of parent PAHs was also a significant source of Cl-PAHs in the production of high purity aluminum. This study suggests that Cl-PAHs and Br-PAHs may behave differently in the atmosphere.

Occurrence, seasonal variation and gas/particle partitioning of current used pesticides (CUPs) across 60 °C temperature and 30° latitudes in China

Gas and particle phases samples were collected at three sites in China in 2019-2020, with 60 °C temperature span and 30° latitude range. Totally, among 76 target current used pesticides (CUPs) with four types, 51 were quantified in at least one sample. The concentrations of individual CUPs ranged from 8 orders of magnitude, indicating different pollution levels. Herbicides were the dominated CUPs in Northeast China, while higher concentrations of fungicides were found in Southeast China. The highest concentrations of CUPs were observed in Southeast China in spring and winter, while in summer and autumn in Northeast China, caused by local climates and crop cultivation patterns. The gas/particle (G/P) partitioning of CUPs was mainly influenced by their physicochemical properties and ambient temperature. The G/P partitioning study indicated that the L-M-Y model was the optimum prediction model for herbicides, fungicides and pyrethroids. The L-M-Y model and the H-B model presented equal performance for organophosphate insecticides. To our knowledge, the L-M-Y model was firstly applied for the study of the G/P partitioning of CUPs, which provided new insights into the related fields of new emergency contaminates.

Cross-regional scale studies of organochlorine pesticides in air in China: Pollution characteristic, seasonal variation, and gas/particle partitioning

Few simultaneous studies of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the atmosphere have been conducted across Southeast and Northeast China, and no data on the gas/particle (G/P) partitioning behaviors of several current-use OCPs are available. In this study, a one-year synchronous monitoring program was conducted for OCPs in Chinese atmosphere spanning 30° latitude and 60 °C temperature. A total of 111 pairs of gas and particle samples were collected from Mohe and Harbin in Northeast China and from Shenzhen in Southeast China. The detection frequency for 66.7 % of the OCPs exceeded 80 %, indicating their prevalence in the atmosphere. The concentrations of individual OCPs spanned six orders of magnitude, indicating different pollution levels. Highest levels of hexachlorobenzene were observed at all sites. Banned OCPs were found predominantly in secondary distribution patterns, whereas current-use OCPs were dominated by primary distribution patterns. In Harbin and Mohe, the concentrations of OCPs were highest in summer, followed by autumn and winter. No obvious seasonal variation was observed in Shenzhen associated with different cultivation types. At all three sites, OCPs were predominantly found in the gas phase, and higher percentages of particle-phase OCPs were observed in Harbin and Mohe than in Shenzhen. In this study, G/P partitioning models were used to study the G/P partitioning mechanism of OCPs. The Li-Ma-Yang model provided the most accurate prediction of the G/P partitioning behavior of OCPs with high molecular weights and low vapor pressures, particularly at low temperatures. However, OCPs with lower molecular weights and higher vapor pressures were predominantly in the equilibrium state, for which the Junge-Pankow model was suitable. This systematic cross-scale study provides new insights into pollution, G/P partitioning, and the environmental behavior of OCPs in the atmosphere.

Development of an analytical method for indoor polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their halogenated derivatives by using thermal separation probe coupled to gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their halogenated derivatives (XPAHs) have been a concern because of their high toxicity. Monitoring indoor PAHs and XPAHs concentrations is important for risk assessment because humans typically spend >90 % of their time indoors. However, the background levels of indoor PAHs and XPAHs concentrations are unknown because of the low sensitivity of conventional analytical methods. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive analytical method using a thermal separation probe (TSP) coupled to a gas chromatograph with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer method for 26 PAHs and 40 XPAHs. The method quantification limit (MQL) values of the TSP method were 1.1 (3,8-dichlorofluoranthene)-906 (dibenzo[a,e]pyrene) times lower than those of the conventional method. The regression line comparing the TSP and conventional methods was y = (0.944 ± 0.0401)x, which was in good agreement. These results demonstrate that the TSP method can be applied to indoor air analysis. The total concentrations of PAHs and XPAHs were 944 and 73.5 pg m-3 for the house and 735 and 0.924 pg m-3 in the office, respectively. Among the detected compounds, 13 PAHs and XPAHs could not be detected using conventional methods because of their high MQL values. The composition of total toxicity equivalency values in the house was dominated by dibenzo[a,i]pyrene (DBaiP: 43.2 %) and dibenzo[a,h]pyrene (DBahP: 27.1 %), which could not be detected using the conventional method. Therefore, the TSP method can improve the risk assessment of indoor PAHs and XPAHs.

Distributions of PAHs, NPAHs, OPAHs, BrPAHs, and ClPAHs in air, bulk deposition, soil, and water in the Shandong Peninsula, China: Urban-rural gradient, interface exchange, and long-range transport

A systematic study of the movement of PAHs (Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and their derivatives through air, soil, and water is key to understanding the exchange and transport mechanisms of these pollutants in the environment and for ultimately improving environmental quality. PAHs and their derivatives, such as nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), brominated PAHs (BrPAHs) and chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), were analyzed in air, bulk deposition, soil, and water samples collected from urban, rural, field, and background sites on the eastern coast of China. The goal was to investigate and discuss their spatiotemporal variations, exchange fluxes, and transport potential. The concentrations of PAHs and their derivatives in the air and bulk deposition displayed distinct seasonal patterns, with higher concentrations observed during the winter and spring and lower concentrations during the summer and autumn. NPAHs exhibited the opposite trend. Significant urban-rural gradients were observed for most of the PAHs and their derivatives. According to the air-soil fugacity calculations, 2-3 ring PAHs, BrPAHs, and ClPAHs were found to volatilize from the soil into the air, while 4-7 ring PAHs, OPAHs, and NPAHs deposited from the air into the soil. The air-water fugacity of the PAHs and their derivatives indicated that surface water was an important source for the ambient atmosphere in Qingdao. The characteristic travel distances (CTDs) and persistence (Pov) for atmospheric transport were much lower than that for the water samples, which may be due to the longer half-lives of PAHs and their derivatives in water. NPAHs and ClPAHs with long transport distances and strong persistence in water could lead to a significant impact on marine pollution.

Global squid contamination by halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and its trade induced risk transfer

Squid is traded globally as an important food resource. However, the occurrence of carcinogenic halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs) in squid and the risk of their transfer through trade is little understood or recognized. Here, we comprehensively evaluated the occurrence and risk transfer by quantifying the congener-specific concentrations of HPAHs in 121 squid samples collected from the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. This was the first time that nine of the 36 target chlorinated and brominated PAH congeners had been detected in squid. The HPAHs exhibited growth-dilution effects in the squid. The lipid content of squid was the most significant factor influencing HPAH bioaccumulation, while differences in squid growth and local ocean contamination influenced by geographical distribution also affected HPAH bioaccumulation. The redistribution and risk transfers of HPAHs in squid as a food could be affected by international trading. The cancer risks from squid consumption in China and Mexico were increased by 50 % and 30 %, respectively, because of international squid trading.

Approaches to the source evaluation of chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fine particles

Chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs) have been recognized as novel hazardous pollutants; however, the dominant sources remain unclear. This study investigates the occurrences of ClPAHs in five stages of size-segregated particles collected from an urban site and evaluates the sources and factors affecting the concentrations using organic and inorganic source tracers. ClPAHs are the most frequently detected in the finest particle fraction (less than 1.1 µm; PM1.1), similar to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), hopanes, and levoglucosan (LEV). The concentrations of total ClPAHs in PM1.1 shows a significant correlation (p < 0.05) with those of total PAHs and specific hopanes but not to LEV and biogenic fatty acids; this suggests that ClPAHs dominantly originate from industrial activities and vehicular emissions. Heatmap analysis, including source tracers, is used to categorize the possible sources of ClPAHs into three types: ClPAH-specific sources, local industrial activities and vehicular emissions, and remote industrial activities. Furthermore, correlation network analysis is used to clarify the relationships between the pollutants.

Prediction study on the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their halogenated derivatives in the atmospheric particulate phase

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their halogenated derivatives (X-PAHs), which generally produced from photochemical and thermal reactions of parent PAHs, widely exist in the environment. They are semi-volatile organic chemicals (SVOCs) and the partitioning between gas/particulate phases affects their environmental migration, transformation and fate, which further impacts their toxicity and health risk to human. However, there is a large data missing of the experimental distribution ratio in the atmospheric particulate phase (f), especially for X-PAHs. In this study, we first checked the correlation between experimental f values of 53 PAH derivatives and their octanol-air partitioning coefficients (log K_OA), which is frequently used to characterize the distribution of chemicals in organic phase, and yielded R² = 0.803. Then, quantum chemical descriptors derived from molecular structural optimization by M06-2X/6-311 +G (d,p) method were further employed to develop Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship (QSPR) model. The model contains two descriptors, the average molecular polarizability (α) and the equilibrium parameter of molecular electrostatic potential (τ), and yields better performance with R² = 0.846 and RMSE = 0.122. The mechanism analysis and validation results by different strategies prove that the model can reveal the molecular properties that dominate the distribution between gas and particulate phases and it can be used to predict f values of other PAHs/X-PAHs, providing basic data for their environmental ecological risk assessment.

Identification of specific halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface soils of petrochemical, flame retardant, and electronic waste dismantling industrial parks

Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) have received tremendous attention due to their high toxicity. To identify the emission pattern of Cl/Br-PAHs from various industrial productions, understand the formation mechanisms and the influence on the surroundings, this study investigated the surface soils of three typical industrial parks. Generally, traces of Cl-PAHs were much lower than Br-PAHs. The mean Cl-PAH concentrations followed the trend of petrochemical industrial park (3.12 ng/g), brominated flame retardant (BFR) manufacturing park (1.48 ng/g), and electronic waste dismantling park (0.26 ng/g). However, the BFR manufacturing park had the highest mean Br-PAH concentration (21.6 ng/g), significantly higher than the other two parks. Generally, higher levels of the chemicals were found in the parks than in their surroundings, except for the electronic waste dismantling park. The massive addition of chlorine additives in crude oil and its by-products, plus the enormous quantity of brominated brines used in BFR productions, favor Cl/Br-PAH formation. Analyzing the homolog compositions of Cl/Br-PAHs suggested that 3- or 4-ring Cl/Br-PAHs were typically come from the petrochemical industrial park and electronic waste dismantling park. Contrarily, 4- or 5-ring Cl/Br-PAHs were predominantly come from the BFR manufacturing activity. This study provides fingerprints to trace the Cl/Br-PAH emissions during industrial production and analyzes the formation mechanism.

Temporal profiles, source analysis, and health risk assessments of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPAHs) and their derivatives (NPAHs, OPAHs, ClPAHs, and BrPAHs) in PM2.5 and PM1.0 from the eastern coastal region of China: Urban coastal area versus coastal background area

The eastern coastal region of China is the area with the highest emission of PAHs in China. Therefore, understanding the sources and health risk of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPAHs) and their derivatives in eastern coastal cities of China is the main basis for air pollution control. In this study, we measured the concentrations of 18 parent PAHs, 17 nitrated PAHs, 7 oxygenated PAHs, 8 chlorinated PAHs, and 13 brominated PAHs in PM_1.0 and PM_2.5 samples collected at an urban coastal city site and a coastal background site in 2019. We analyzed the temporal distribution, molecular composition, and sources and performed health risk assessments for both winter and summer samples. The average concentration of the PPAHs and their derivatives (all 63 compounds combined) in the PM_1.0 samples accounted for 75.57% of the PAHs concentration in PM_2.5 samples. The average concentration of PM_2.5- and PM_1.0- bound PPAHs in winter was 114.70 times higher than in summer, and their derivatives was 27.51 times. Both the combined concentrations of the 18 PPAHs and the combined concentrations of the 45 derivatives were higher in the coastal city compared to the background site during the winter (1.90 and 1.48 times, respectively), but they were comparable during the summer. The positive matrix factorization analysis indicated that the compounds mainly originated from coal/biomass combustion, industrial sources, vehicle emissions, and secondary formation. In addition, the concentration-weighted trajectories model revealed that the PAHs were mainly emitted locally in Shandong Province and surrounding areas, such as Hebei Province, Henan Province, and Bohai Sea. The compounds 1-NPYR, 2+9-BrPHE, 9,10-Cl2PHE, and 1-ClPYR dominantly contributed to the derivatives of TEQ during the winter due to their high concentrations or the high TEFs of these compounds.

Contribution of atmospheric deposition to halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments: A validation study

Surface sediments are both sinks and sources of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) in the environment. It is important to study the source of Cl/Br-PAHs in the surface sediment for controlling the ecological risk of Cl/Br-PAHs. Clues from the previous research suggested that atmospheric deposition may be one of the main sources of Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment. However, due to the lack of matched sediment and atmospheric Cl/Br-PAHs data, the contribution of atmospheric deposition to Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment has not been confirmed. This study investigated the characteristics of 37 Cl/Br-PAHs and validated the contribution of atmospheric sedimentation to Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment by a case study in the surface sediments of the Chaobai River, China. To the best of our knowledge, four Cl-PAHs and eleven Br-PAHs were found in the sediments for the first time. The total concentrations of 18 Cl-PAH species were 76-2301 pg/g, while those of Br-PAHs were 6-238 pg/g. The toxic equivalent quantities (TEQ) of the Cl-PAHs in surface sediments in the water conservation area and in the urban comparison area were 0.73 pg TEQ/g and 2.21 pg TEQ/g, respectively. The TEQ of the Br-PAHs in surface sediments in the water conservation area and in the urban comparison area were 2.85 × 10^-2 pg TEQ/g and 6.6 × 10^-2 pg TEQ/g, respectively. Based on the characteristics comparison and correlation analysis of Cl/Br-PAHs in both sediment and ambient air, it was initially confirmed the contribution of atmospheric deposition to Cl-PAHs in sediments. However, there was no conclusion of Br-PAHs in sediment similar to Cl-PAHs in sediment. It was inferred that the sources of Br-PAHs in sediment were different from Cl-PAHs in sediment.

Occurrence of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from electric arc furnace for steelmaking

Chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants with potential carcinogenic toxicities that are even higher than those of their parent PAH congeners. Current knowledge of Cl/Br-PAH sources and emission characteristics is lacking. Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking is a potential source for Cl/Br-PAHs, considering that preheating of raw materials before they enter the EAF could produce suitable conditions for Cl/Br-PAHs formation. In this field study, we identified EAFs as an important source of Cl/Br-PAHs and clarified their emission concentrations, fingerprints by gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution magnetic mass spectrometry. Potential formation mechanisms of Cl/Br-PAHs were also proposed. The mass concentration ranges for Σ₁₈Cl-PAHs and Σ₁₈Br-PAHs in stack gas were 25.85-4191 ng Nm^-3 and 1.02-341 ng Nm^-3, respectively. The variation of concentration indicated that the steel scrap composition greatly affected the production of Cl/Br-PAHs. The congener ratios including 6-chlorobenzo [a]pyrene/3-chlorofluoranthene and 1-chloroanthracene/1-chloropyrene could be used to estimate the influence of industrial sources on Cl-PAH occurrences in the air. Ring structure growth was the dominant formation pathway for Cl/Br-PAHs, distinctly different from dioxin formation mechanisms dominated by precursor dimerization and chlorination.

Atmospheric deposition of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in central Europe analyzed by GC-MS/MS

Chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs and BrPAHs) are persistent organic pollutants that are ubiquitous in the atmospheric environment. The sources, fate, and sinks in the atmosphere of these substances are largely unknown. One of the reasons is the lack of widely accessible analytical instrumentation. In this study, a new analytical method for ClPAHs and BrPAHs using gas-chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry is presented. The method was applied to determine ClPAHs and BrPAHs in total deposition samples collected at two sites in central Europe. Deposition fluxes of ClPAHs and BrPAHs ranged 580 (272-962) and 494 (161-936) pg m-2 day-1, respectively, at a regional background site, Košetice, and 547 (351-724) and 449 (202-758) pg m-2 day-1, respectively, at a semi-urban site, Praha-Libuš. These fluxes are similar to those of PCBs and more than 2 orders of magnitude lower than those of the parent PAHs in the region. Seasonal variations of the deposition fluxes of these halogenated PAHs were found with maxima in summer and autumn, and minima in winter at Košetice, but vice versa at Praha-Libuš. The distribution of ClPAHs and BrPAHs between the particulate and dissolved phases in deposition samples suggests higher degradability of particulate BrFlt/Pyr and BrBaA than of the corresponding ClPAHs. A number of congeners were detected for the first time in the atmospheric environment.

Environmental profile, distributions and potential sources of halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs) are high lipophilic and degradation-resistant, which have been detected in the air, water, sediment and biota. HPAHs tend to have strong adverse effects on animals and humans. Although we have realized HPAHs are emerging contaminants which needs to be paid attention, there is still a lack of their individual commercial standards. This makes it difficult for understanding HPAHs comprehensively. This review is devoted to collect all the results have reported, and give a systemic look of their global distributions, influence factors and sources. Compared with air, studies on other environmental matrices (water and sediment) are more limited. The researches on organisms are fewest. Comparing the studied congeners, there are more studies on ClPAHs than BrPAHs. Human activities contribute mostly to their occurrence. Further, we then also introduce the toxicity and analytical methods to better understand HPAHs. The future research directions are also provided. Through this review, we can conclude there is an urgent need to develop analysis methods and ecologic risk assessment for better exploring HPAHs. Effective methods should be done to control HPAHs. Therefore, this review can provide a good basis for researchers to understand and control global pollution.

Occurrence, health risk assessment and regional impact of parent, halogenated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in tap water

Recently, derivates of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have aroused increasing concerns due to potential health problems they cause. In this study, we first found the coexistence of PAHs, chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs), brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) in tap water. Twenty-six compounds including 13 PAHs, 5 Cl-PAHs, 5 Br-PAHs, and 3 OPAHs were detected. Total concentrations of PAHs (2.50-56.90 ng L^-1) and OPAHs (n.d. to 80.34 ng L^-1) were relatively higher than those of Cl-PAHs (0.30-11.28 ng L^-1) and Br-PAHs (n.d. to 8.20 ng L^-1). We calculated the 95th percentile incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values of PAHs and HPAHs. In all sampling sites, although no ILCR values for PAHs and HPAHs were higher than 1.00E-06, results still indicates there is still a low cancer risk existed. In addition, regional impact was established by combining ILCR values with population density. Predicted cancer incidence (PCI, people km^-2) was calculated to evaluate regional impact more comprehensively. The results were different from previous hypothesis that sampling sites with high ILCR values may not necessarily present high regional impacts. After total PCI of each district was summed, all calculated districts of Beijing, China were at low regional impact.

Occurrence, potential source, and cancer risk of PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their halogenated derivatives in Shizuoka, Japan, and Dhaka, Bangladesh

Because of their unintentional formation and low vapor pressure, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their halogenated derivatives (XPAHs) in the atmosphere are distributed primarily to aerosolized particles with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM_2.5). However, no information is available regarding the occurrence of PM_2.5-bound PAHs and XPAHs in Bangladesh, one of the most highly PM_2.5-polluted regions worldwide. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of PM_2.5-bound PAHs and XPAHs in the atmospheres of Dhaka in Bangladesh and Shizuoka in Japan (as a reference) and estimated their incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs). In addition, we statistically estimated the potential sources of PM_2.5-bound PAHs and XPAHs by using principal component analysis and positive matrix factorization. The median concentration of total PM_2.5-bound PAHs and XPAHs in Bangladesh was 24.2 times that in Japan. The estimated potential sources of PAHs clearly differed between Japan and Bangladesh, whereas those of XPAHs were largely (>80%) unknown in both countries. The median ILCR in Bangladesh was 2.81 × 10^-3, which greatly exceeded the upper limit of acceptable risk (10^-4). These results indicate that comprehensive monitoring and control of atmospheric PM_2.5-bound PAHs and XPAHs are needed urgently, especially in highly polluted countries.

Accurate and ultrasensitive determination of 72 parent and halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a variety of environmental samples via gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their halogenated derivatives (XPAHs) are ubiquitous in various environmental media. Analytical problems, however, make it difficult to accurately determine their concentrations. To develop a satisfactory analytical method suitable for a diversity of PAHs and XPAHs in multiple environmental samples, we evaluated three commercial analytical columns (DB-5MS, Select PAH, and Rxi-PAH) for better chromatographic separation and optimized the analytical conditions for gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Comparison of the abilities of the columns to separate peaks revealed that the Rxi-PAH was the best column for both PAH and XPAH analyses. Optimization of analytical conditions for GC-MS/MS resulted in sensitivities for PAHs and XPAHs that were 4.2-fold-2600-fold higher than the sensitivities of GC-high-resolution MS (GC-HRMS) (an example of a traditional analytical method). Although there were no statistically significant differences between the instrumental detection limits (IDLs) of PAHs and XPAHs measured by GC-HRMS, the IDLs of XPAHs were significantly lower than those of PAHs when measured by GC-MS/MS. This difference could be attributed to the unique ionization patterns of XPAHs in the GC-MS/MS analysis, which suppressed background noise and increased the analytical sensitivity. Analyses of PAHs and XPAHs in grilled chicken, vehicle exhaust, sea sediment, ambient air, and indoor dust via the analytical method optimized in this study revealed that the proposed method was sufficiently sensitive, comprehensive, and versatile for risk assessment purposes, and could eliminate interferences associated with the co-elution of target PAHs and XPAHs.

Organic Iodine Compounds in Fine Particulate Matter from a Continental Urban Region: Insights into Secondary Formation in the Atmosphere

Atmospheric iodine chemistry can significantly affect the atmospheric oxidation capacity in certain regions. In such processes, particle-phase organic iodine compounds (OICs) are key reservoir species in their loss processes. However, their presence and formation mechanism remain unclear, especially in continental regions. Using gas chromatography and time-of-flight mass spectrometry coupled with both electron capture negative ionization and electron impact sources, this study systematically identified unknown OICs in 2-year samples of ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) collected in Beijing, an inland city. We determined the molecular structure of 37 unknown OICs, among which six species were confirmed by reference standards. The higher concentrations for ∑₃₇OICs (median: 280 pg m^-3; range: 49.0-770 pg m^-3) measured in the heating season indicate intensive coal combustion sources of atmospheric iodine. 1-Iodo-2-naphthol and 4-iodoresorcinol are the most abundant species mainly from primary combustion emission and secondary formation, respectively. The detection of 2- and 4-iodoresorcinols, but not of iodine-substituted catechol/hydroquinone or 5-iodoresorcinol, suggests that they are formed via the electrophilic substitution of resorcinol by hypoiodous acid, a product of the reaction of iodine with ozone. This study reports isomeric information on OICs in continental urban PM_2.5 and provides valuable evidence on the formation mechanism of OICs in ambient particles.

Non-Thermal Plasma-Modified Ru-Sn-Ti Catalyst for Chlorinated Volatile Organic Compound Degradation

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) are vital environmental concerns due to their low biodegradability and long-term persistence. Catalytic combustion technology is one of the more commonly used technologies for the treatment of CVOCs. Catalysts with high low-temperature activity, superior selectivity of non-toxic products, and resistance to chlorine poisoning are desirable. Here we adopted a plasma treatment method to synthesize a tin-doped titania loaded with ruthenium dioxide (RuO2) catalyst, possessing enhanced activity (T90%, the temperature at which 90% of dichloromethane (DCM) is decomposed, is 262 °C) compared to the catalyst prepared by the conventional calcination method. As revealed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, the high surface area of the tin-doped titania catalyst and the enhanced dispersion and surface oxidation of RuO2 induced by plasma treatment were found to be the main factors determining excellent catalytic activities.

New equation to predict size-resolved gas-particle partitioning quotients for polybrominated diphenyl ethers

Gas/particle (G/P) partition quotients of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) for bulk air have been widely discussed in experimental and theoretical contexts, but research on size-resolved G/P partition quotients (K_Pi) are scarce and limited in scope. To investigate G/P partition behavior of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) for size-segregated particles in the atmosphere, 396 individual size-segregated particulate samples (36 batches × 11 size-ranges), and 108 pairs of concurrent gaseous and bulk particulate samples were collected in Harbin, China. A steady-state equation based on bulk particles is derived to determine G/P partition quotients of PBDEs for size-segregated particles, which depends on the organic matter contents of size-segregated particles (f_OMi). This equation can well predict K_Pi with knowledge of bulk partition quotient (K_PS), ambient temperature, and f_OMi, the results of which match well with monitoring data in Harbin and other published data collected in Shanghai and Guangzhou of China and Thessaloniki of Greece, and remedies a defect of over-estimate K_Pi for high-brominated PBDEs by the previous equation. In particular, the new equation contributes to obtaining the PBDEs concentrations in all atmospheric phase from partial phase, then provides a credible path to evaluate healthy exposure dose from the airborne PBDEs, by co-utilization with exposure models.

Chemical identity and cardiovascular toxicity of hydrophobic organic components in PM2.5

Numerous experimental and epidemiological studies have demonstrated that exposure to PM_2.5 may result in pathogenesis of several major cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which can be attributed to the combined adverse effects induced by the complicated components of PM_2.5. Organic materials, which are major components of PM_2.5, contain thousands of chemicals, and most of them are environmental hazards. However, the contamination profile and contribution to overall toxicity of PM_2.5-bound organic components (OCs) have not been thoroughly evaluated yet. Herein, we aim to provide an overview of the literature on PM_2.5-bound hydrophobic OCs, with an emphasis on the chemical identity and reported impairments on the cardiovascular system, including the potential exposure routes and mechanisms. We first provide an update on the worldwide mass concentration and composition data of PM_2.5, and then, review the contamination profile of PM_2.5-bound hydrophobic OCs, including constitution, concentration, distribution, formation, source, and identification. In particular, the link between exposure to PM_2.5-bound hydrophobic OCs and CVDs and its possible underlying mechanisms are discussed to evaluate the possible risks of PM_2.5-bound hydrophobic OCs on the cardiovascular system and to provide suggestions for future studies.

Size-distribution-based assessment of human inhalation and dermal exposure to airborne parent, oxygenated and chlorinated PAHs during a regional heavy haze episode

The adverse health effects of haze and particle-bound contaminants in China have recently caused increasing concern, and particle size plays a significant role in affecting human exposure to haze-correlated pollutants. To this background, size-segregated particulate samples (nine size fractions (<0.4, 0.4-0.7, 0.7-1.1, 1.1-2.1, 2.1-3.3, 3.3-4.7, 4.7-5.8, 5.8-9.0 and > 9.0 μm) were collected in three scale-gradient cities in northern China and analysed for a series of parent, oxygenated and chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, O-PAHs and Cl-PAHs). The total geometric mean concentrations of PAHs and O-PAHs for Beijing, Zhengzhou and Xinxiang were 98.1 and 27.2, 77.9 and 77.5, 41.0 and 30.7 ng m^-3, respectively, which were 50-200 times higher than those for Cl-PAHs (0.5, 0.7 and 0.4 ng m^-3). Though unimodal size-distribution patterns were found for all these contaminants for these three cities, PAHs represented distinctly higher concentration levels around the peak fraction (0.7-2.1 μm) than O-PAHs and Cl-PAHs. With 4-6 ring PAHs as dominant components in all samples, the percentage proportion of 2-3 ring PAHs (ranging from 1% to 26%) generally increased with particle size increasing, implying the sources of these compounds varied little among the 9 size fractions in all three cities. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) model and permeability coefficient method were synchronously applied to the size-segregated data for inhalation and dermal exposure assessment to intensively estimate the human exposure doses to airborne PAHs. Further, the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) was calculated and it's found that ILCR from inhalation was higher than that from dermal uptake for children and adults in Beijing and Zhengzhou, while the ILCR for Xinxiang presented a contrary pattern, revealing dermal uptake to be an equally significant exposure pathway to airborne PAHs compared to inhalation.

Seasonal variation and gas/particle partitioning of atmospheric halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the effects of meteorological conditions in Ulsan, South Korea

Atmospheric halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Halo-PAHs) and parent PAHs were monitored in Ulsan, South Korea for one year (January‒December 2015) to investigate their seasonal patterns, gas/particle partitioning behavior, and the impact of meteorological conditions. The mean concentrations of 24 chlorinated PAHs, 11 brominated PAHs, and 13 parent PAHs in the gaseous and particulate phases were 8.64 and 9.64 pg/m³, 11.6 and 1.62 pg/m³, and 2.17 and 2.40 ng/m³, respectively. Winter had the highest ClPAH and PAH levels, with significant contributions from poly-chlorine groups and high-molecular-weight compounds. However, BrPAHs showed reverse patterns with the highest concentration in summer and the dominant gaseous fraction throughout the year. This finding could be explained by the strong local sources of BrPAHs, related to automobile and petrochemical industries. In contrast, the effects of the temperature inversion layer and atmospheric transport from the outside of Ulsan were more apparent for ClPAHs and PAHs, particularly in winter and spring. Regarding gas/particle partitioning, Halo-PAHs exhibited different seasonal behaviors from those of parent PAHs. The sorption pathway of Halo-PAHs seemed to shift from absorption as the sole dominant mechanism in winter and spring to both adsorption and absorption in summer and fall, while both partitioning mechanisms contributed equally for parent PAHs during the entire year. This study implies that Halo-PAHs and parent PAHs might not share the same atmospheric behavior, possibly due to different characteristics in atmospheric reactions with other chemicals and particle-size distribution. However, there have been limited studies about the formation of Halo-PAHs and their physicochemical properties; hence, further in-depth investigations are of vital importance.

New classes of organic pollutants in the remote continental environment - Chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on the Tibetan Plateau

Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are carcinogenic and ubiquitous environmental organic pollutants. The abundance and sources of these compounds have not been studied in remote environments. We collected and analyzed air, soil, lichen, and moss samples from the Tibetan Plateau. Concentrations of chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were 0.78-4.16 pg/m³ in air, 3.11-297 pg/g in soil, 260-741 pg/g in lichens, and 338-934 pg/g in mosses. Concentrations of brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were 0.15-0.59 pg/m³ in air, 0.61-72.3 pg/g in soil, 33.5-64.9 pg/g in lichens, and 20.5-72.5 pg/g in mosses. The dominant congeners were 9- and 2-chlorophenanthrene, 1-chloropyrene, 3-chlorofluoranthene, and 1-bromopyrene. We found correlations between congener concentrations in lichens and in air, and lichens effectively predicted near-ground atmospheric concentrations of the pollutants. The enrichment of photochemically stable compounds in high-altitude environments is influenced by their physicochemical properties. Principal component analysis with multivariate linear regression of chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons measured in lichens provided an assessment of the relative source contributions, and suggested that in Medog County of Tibetan Plateau, 48% was likely from long-range combustion sources, 26% was from local burning sources, and 26% was from photochemical formation.

Quantification of Cl-PAHs and their parent compounds in fish by improved ASE method and stable isotope dilution GC-MS

This study aimed at developing a simple and accurate method for determination of emerging chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl-PAHs) in fish by stable isotope dilution gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Fish samples were extracted by improved accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) method. Matrix effects were observed, and matrix-matched calibration was verified with good intra-day and inter day precisions (lower than 16.1% and 15.1% respectively). Method detection limits were 0.10-5.62 ng g^-1 (dry weight) with satisfactory linearity, and recoveries ranged from 50% to 150%, with relative standard deviation values less than 18.5% at different concentration levels. This improved ASE method was proved to be suitable for analyzing Cl-PAHs in fish samples, with good analytical selectivity, linearity, recovery and precision. Furthermore, the composition analysis revealed that chlorinated compounds of phenanthrene, pyrene and acenaphthene were dominated in Cl-PAHs contaminants. The correlationship between the pollution of Cl-PAHs and their corresponding parent structures in fish samples was also analyzed in detail.

Prenatal exposure to ambient fine particulate matter induces dysregulations of lipid metabolism in adipose tissue in male offspring

Prenatal exposure to ambient fine particles (diameter < 0.25 μm, PM_2.5) has been found to be associated with abnormal growth and development in offspring. However, the effects of PM_2.5 on the lipid metabolism of adipose tissue in offspring are unclear. In the present study, we established a mouse model of prenatal exposure to PM_2.5 by intratracheal instillation to pregnant C57BL/6 female mice with PM_2.5 suspension or normal saline. We found that prenatal exposure to PM_2.5 of a mouse model reduced body weight in adult male offspring after 6 weeks old. Histological analysis showed that the adipocyte size was significantly reduced in epididymal adipose tissue (eWAT) in male offspring, but not in brown adipose tissue. The expression levels of genes related to fatty acid synthesis (ACC1, ACSL1) and oxidation (PPARα) in eWAT were also significantly decreased. In addition, downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6) was also observed. Lipidomics analysis of eWAT demonstrated that prenatal exposure of PM_2.5 reduced lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC), phosphatidylcholines (PC), phosphatidylethanolamines (PE), sphingomyelins (SM), and ceramides (Cer), indicating that metabolic pathways, including SM-Cer signaling and glycerophospholipids remodeling, were disrupted. In summary, prenatal exposure to PM_2.5 was associated with the dysregulations in lipid metabolism of eWAT and pro-inflammatory response in male offspring.

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activity and DNA-damaging effects of chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl-PAHs)

An increasing number of studies have indicated that environmental contamination with chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl-PAHs) has been underestimated. However, insufficient available toxicological information on Cl-PAHs makes evaluating their risks to health challenging. Two in vitro bioassays were used in the present study to characterize the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activity and DNA-damaging effects of 22 low-molecular-weight PAHs and their Cl-PAHs by using the EROD assay in rat hepatoma (H4IIE) cells and the SOS/umu test (S. typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002). Compared with their parent PAHs, most of the Cl-PAHs enhanced AhR-mediated activity in the EROD assay. 1,3,6,8-Tetrachloro-pyrene (1,3,6,8-Tetracl-Py) induced the greatest potency of EROD activity (83.1%-TCDD-max) and its single point ReP was 6.64 × 10^-6. Compared with their parent PAHs, several Cl-PAHs showed significant DNA-damaging effects in the SOS/umu test with the addition of S9, and the toxic equivalency of benzo[a]pyrene (TEQ_BaP) was calculated for them. 9-Chloroanthracene (9-Ant) and 5,6-Dichloroacenaphthene (5,6-Dicl-Ace) had relatively high TEQ_BaP (0.62 and 0.54, respectively). However, only 1,3,6,8-Tetracl-Py elicited strong DNA-damaging effects in the absence of S9. The degree of chlorination, the position of chlorine substitutions, and the structure of parent PAHs influenced the potency of low-molecular-weight PAHs with regard to their AhR activity and DNA-damaging effects. More concern should be raised for these environmentally relevant pollutants.

Hazy Weather-Induced Variation in Environmental Behavior of PCDD/Fs and PBDEs in Winter Atmosphere of A North China Megacity

Haze is a serious pollution problem during the wintertime in North China. In this study, we investigated how the periodic cycle of winter haze events affect the environmental behaviors of two typical persistent organic pollutants, namely, polychlorinated dibenzo- p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), in the atmosphere of a typical megacity, Beijing. The average atmospheric concentrations of the total di- to octa-CDD/Fs (∑PCDD/Fs: 378.0 pg/m³) and the total mono- to nona-BDEs (∑_9hPBDEs: 166.5 pg/m³) during haze episodes increased by 3.6-fold and 1.9-fold compared with those during the nonhaze periods, respectively; and their concentrations both linearly increased with PM_2.5 levels and decreased as a power function of the atmospheric boundary layer height. The elevated concentrations could be clearly attributed to the vertically sinking motion of airflow in the midlower troposphere. When a haze event occurred, the partitioning rate of PCDD/Fs and PBDEs into particles was reduced; the largest fraction of the particle-bound ∑PCDD/Fs was shifted from ultrafine particles to accumulation mode particles; and a steady-state model (Li-Ma-Yang model) satisfactorily described the gas-particle partitioning of the PCDD/F and PBDE homologues. The inhalation exposure risk evaluation indicated that special attention should be paid to the increased cancer risk induced by the elevated inhalation intake of PCDD/Fs during haze episodes.

Modeling of residential indoor PM2.5 exposure in 37 counties in China

It is critical to estimate the exposure to indoor air pollution of residents spending most of their time in such microenvironments. However, the understanding regarding PM_2.5 exposure in residential indoor environments is very limited. In this study, we collected participants' basic information and time-activity patterns, as well as details of other factors related to indoor air pollution exposure, through questionnaires presented to a large population in 37 counties of China. Continuous monitoring of ambient PM_2.5 concentrations was performed using an environmental fixed-site monitoring network. Residential indoor PM_2.5 concentrations were predicted using a mass balance model based on the data obtained. Evaluation of continuous daily average residential indoor PM_2.5 exposure doses for large populations during winter revealed concentrations ranged from 67 to 195 μg/m³. Finally, differences in residential indoor PM_2.5 exposure between northern and southern China were investigated. The results suggested that residential indoor PM_2.5 concentrations in northern China, associated with heating, were higher than in the south. The established model could be important for improved understanding of human exposure to indoor PM_2.5 air pollution.

Design and application of a web-based real-time personal PM2.5 exposure monitoring system

Growing demand from public health research for conduct large-scale epidemiological studies to explore health effect of PM_2.5 was well-documented. To address this need, we design a web-based real-time personal PM_2.5 exposure monitoring system (RPPM2.5 system) which can help researcher to get big data of personal PM_2.5 exposure with low-cost, low labor requirement, and low operating technical requirements. RPPM2.5 system can provide relative accurate real-time personal exposure data for individuals, researches, and decision maker. And this system has been used in a survey of PM_2.5 personal exposure level conducted in 5 cities of China and has provided mass of valuable data for epidemiological research.

Spatial distribution and seasonal variation of four current-use pesticides (CUPs) in air and surface water of the Bohai Sea, China

Current-use pesticides (CUPs) are widely used in agriculture, and some are listed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) due to their bioaccumulative and toxic properties. China is one of the largest producers and users of pesticides in the world. However, very limited data are available about the environmental fates of CUPs. Four CUPs (trifluralin, chlorothalonil, chlorpyrifos, and dicofol) in surface seawater and low atmospheric samples taken during research cruises on the Bohai Sea in August and December 2016 and February 2017 were analyzed, we added the spring data sampled in May 2012 to the discussion of seasonal variation. In our study, chlorpyrifos was the most abundant CUPs in the gas phase with a mean abundance of 59.06±126.94pgm^-3, and dicofol had the highest concentration dissolved in seawater (mean: 115.94±123.16pgL^-1). The concentrations of all target compounds were higher during May and August due to intensive use and relatively high temperatures in the spring and summer. Backward trajectories indicated that air masses passing through the eastern coast of the Bohai Sea contained high concentrations of pollutants, while the air masses from the Bohai and Yellow Seas were less polluted. The high concentration of pollutants in seawater was not only influenced by high yields from the source region of production or usage, but also by input from polluted rivers. Volatilization from surface water was found to be an important source of trifluralin and chlorpyrifos in the air. Air-sea gas exchange of chlorothalonil underwent strong net deposition (mean FRs: 51.67), which was driven by higher concentrations in air and indicates that the Bohai Sea acted as a sink for chlorothalonil.
