Effects of ambient air pollution from municipal solid waste landfill on children's non-specific immunity and respiratory health

A comprehensive perspective on potentially hazardous elements (PHEs) bound with particulate matters in ambient air of landfill sites: a systematic review and probabilistic risk assessment

Air pollution from Potentially Hazardous Elements bound with particulate matter (PHEs bound PM) in landfill air is a significant concern for human health. To date, no comprehensive research has focused on the health risks of PHEs bound to PM in landfill air. This systematic review aimed to examine PHEs, including Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Arsenic (As), Nickel (Ni), and Zinc (Zn) bound with PM in landfill air and assess the health risk for workers and waste management personnel. The systematically search was made in different electronic databases. After the screening, 18 most relevant studied focused on PHEs bound PM in landfill air were selected. The data extraction analysis indicated that mean concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cr, As, Ni, and Zn in landfill air were 0.3037, 0.0941, 0.4093, 0.0221, 0.2768, and 0.7622 μg/m3, respectively. Except for Pb, the concentrations of other PHEs bound to PM exceeded USEPA air quality standards. In addition, Non-carcinogenic risks from Cd, Cr, and Ni exposure exceeded permissible limits (HQ > 1), while As had an HQ value of 0.401. Carcinogenic risks from As, Cd, Ni, and Pb exposure were 1.31 × 10-5, 5.10 × 10-4, 3.51 × 10-5, and 2.03 × 10-6, respectively. Notably, the lifetime carcinogenic risk for workers exposed to Cr in polluted air (6.17 × 10-3) exceeded permissible limits (10-4 to 10-6). In conclusion, given the high carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of some PHEs bound PM in landfills, it is necessary to conduct more research on the health effects of interaction with these PHEs bound PM on communities and the environment in different countries. Also, it is necessary to evaluate the role of different landfill operational activities on atmospheric dispersion of PHEs bound PM) in landfill air.

Potential risks of organic contaminated soil after persulfate remediation: Harmful gaseous sulfur release

Persulfate is considered a convenient and efficient remediation agent for organic contaminated soil. However, the potential risk of sulfur into the soil remediation by persulfate remains ignored. In this study, glass bottles with different persulfate dosages and groundwater tables were set up to simulate persulfate remediation of organic pollutants (aniline). The results found sulfate to be the main end-product (83.0%‒99.5%) of persulfate remediation after 10 days. Moreover, H2S accounted for 93.4%‒99.4% of sulfur reduction end-products, suggesting that H2S was the final fate of sulfur. H2S was released rapidly after one to three days at a maximum concentration of 33.0 ppm, which is sufficient to make a person uncomfortable. According to the fitted curve results, H2S concentration decreased to a safe concentration (0.15 ppm) after 20‒85 days. Meanwhile, the maximum concentration of methanethiol reached 0.6 ppm. These results indicated that secondary pollution from persulfate remediation could release harmful gases over a long time. Therefore, persulfate should be used more carefully as a remediation agent for soil contamination.

Exorbitant signatures of pesticides and pharmaceuticals in municipal solid wastes (MSWs): Novel insights through risk analysis, dissolution dynamics, and model-based source identification

Studies on the occurrence and fates of emerging organic micropollutants (EOMPs) like pharmaceuticals and pesticides in MSWs are scarce in the literature. Therefore, MSWs were sampled from 20 Indian landfills and characterized for five widely consumed EOMPs (chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, carbofuran, carbamazepine, and sodium diclofenac), physicochemical, and biological properties. The pesticide (median: 0.17-0.44 mg kg-1) and pharmaceutical (median: 0.20-0.26 mg kg-1) concentrations significantly fluctuated based on landfill localities. Eventually, principal component and multi-factor (MFA) models demonstrated close interactions of EOMPs with biological (microbial biomass and humification rates) and chemical (N, P, K, Ca, S, etc.) properties of MSWs. At the same time, the MFA resolved that EOMPs' fates in MSWs significantly differ from bigger cosmopolitan cities to smaller rural townships. Correspondingly, the concentration-driven ecological risks were high in 15 MSWs with EOMP-toxicity ranks of diclofenac > carbofuran = chlorpyrifos > cypermethrin > carbamazepine. The EOMPs' dissolution dynamics and source apportionments were evaluated using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model for the first time on experimental data, extracting four anthropogenic sources (households, heterogeneous business centers, agricultural, and open drains). The most significant contribution of EOMPs to MSWs was due to heterogeneous business activity. Notably, the aging of soluble chemical fractions seems to influence the source characteristics of EOMPs strongly.

Meandered and muddled: a systematic review on the impact of air pollution on ocular health

From the years 1970-2023, a systematic overview of the diverse consequences of particulate matter on eye health and a disease classification according to acute, chronic, and genetic are presented using the PubMed, Research Gate, Google Scholar, and Science Direct databases. Various studies on medical aspects correlate with the eye and health. However, from an application perspective, there is limited research on the ocular surface and air pollution. The main objective of the study is to uncover the relationship between eye health and air pollution, particularly particulate matter, along with other external factors acting as aggravators. The secondary goal of the work is to examine the existing models for mimicking human eyes. The study is followed by a questionnaire survey in a workshop, in which the exposure-based investigation was tagged based on their activity. This paper establishes a relationship between particulate matter and its influence on human health, leading to numerous eye diseases like dry eyes, conjunctivitis, myopia, glaucoma, and trachoma. The results of the questionnaire survey indicate that about 68% of the people working in the workshop are symptomatic with tears, blurred vision, and mood swings, while 32% of the people were asymptomatic. Although there are approaches for conducting experiments, the evaluation is not well defined; empirical and numerical solutions for particle deposition on the eye are needed. There prevails a broad gap in the arena of ocular deposition modeling.

Interactive effects of meteorological factors and air pollutants on hand, foot, and mouth disease in Chengdu, China: a time-series study

OBJECTIVES

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral infectious disease that poses a substantial threat in the Asia-Pacific region. It is widely reported that meteorological factors are associated with HFMD. However, the relationships between air pollutants and HFMD are still controversial. In addition, the interactive effects between meteorological factors and air pollutants on HFMD remain unknown. To fill this research gap, we conducted a time-series study.

DESIGN

A time-series study.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

Daily cases of HFMD as well as meteorological and air pollution data were collected in Chengdu from 2011 to 2017. A total of 184 610 HFMD cases under the age of 15 were included in our study.

OUTCOME MEASURES

Distributed lag nonlinear models were used to investigate the relationships between HFMD and environmental factors, including mean temperature, relative humidity, SO₂, NO₂, and PM₁₀. Then, the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and the proportion attributable to interaction were calculated to quantitatively evaluate the interactions between meteorological factors and air pollutants on HFMD. Bivariate response surface models were used to visually display the interactive effects.

RESULTS

The cumulative exposure-response curves of SO₂ and NO₂ were inverted 'V'-shaped and 'M'-shaped, respectively, and the risk of HFMD gradually decreased with increasing PM₁₀ concentrations. We found that there were synergistic interactions between mean temperature and SO₂, relative humidity and SO₂, as well as relative humidity and PM₁₀ on HFMD, with individual RERIs of 0.334 (95% CI 0.119 to 0.548), 0.428 (95% CI 0.214 to 0.642) and 0.501 (95% CI 0.262 to 0.741), respectively, indicating that the effects of SO₂ and PM₁₀ on HFMD were stronger under high temperature (>17.3°C) or high humidity (>80.0%) conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

There were interactive effects between meteorological factors and air pollutants on HFMD. Our findings could provide guidance for targeted and timely preventive and control measures for HFMD.

Short-term effects of personal exposure to temperature variability on cardiorespiratory health based on subclinical non-invasive biomarkers

Growing literatures have explored the cardiorespiratory health effects of the daily temperature, but such effects of temperature variability remain unclear. We investigated the acute associations of personal levels of temperature variability with cardiorespiratory biomarkers. This is a panel study with four repeated measurements among forty eligible college students in Hefei, Anhui Province, China. We collected personal-level temperature data using temperature/humidity data loggers. Temperature variability parameters included diurnal temperature range (DTR), the standard-deviation of temperature (SDT) and temperature variability (TV). Cardiorespiratory health indicators included three BP parameters [systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP) and mean article pressure (MAP)], fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), and four saliva biomarkers [C-reactive protein (CRP), cortisol, alpha-amylase and lysozyme]. Linear mixed-effect models were then used to assess the associations of temperature variability with these cardiorespiratory biomarkers. We found that short-term exposure to the three temperature variability parameters was associated with these cardiorespiratory biomarkers. The magnitude, direction and significance of these associations varied by temperature variability parameters, by biomarkers and by lags of exposure. Specifically, temperature variability parameters were inversely associated with BP and saliva lysozyme; positively associated with airway inflammation biomarkers (FeNO and saliva CRP) and stress response biomarkers (saliva cortisol and alpha-amylase). The results were robust to further control for air pollutants, and these associations were more prominent in females and in subjects with abnormal body mass index. Our findings suggested that acute exposure to temperature variability could significantly alter cardiorespiratory biomarker profiles among healthy young adults in China.

Fine particulate matter, airway inflammation, stress response, non-specific immune function and buccal microbial diversity in young adults

Fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) has been associated with risk of oral and respiratory diseases. However, the biological mechanisms of adverse oral and respiratory health response to PM_2.5 fluctuation have not been well characterized. This study aims to explore the relationships of PM_2.5 with airway inflammation, salivary biomarkers and buccal mucosa microbiota. We performed a panel study among 40 college students involving 4 follow-ups from August to October 2021 in Hefei, Anhui Province, China. Health outcomes included fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), salivary biomarkers [C-reactive protein (CRP), cortisol, lysozyme and alpha-amylase] and buccal mucosa microbial diversity. Linear mixed-effect models were applied to explore the cumulative impacts of PM_2.5 on health indicators. PM_2.5 was positively correlated with FeNO, CRP, cortisol and alpha-amylase, while negatively with lysozyme. Per 10-μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5 was linked to maximum increments in FeNO of 10.71% (95%CI: 2.01%, 19.41%) at lag 0-24 h, in CRP of 7.10% (95%CI: 5.39%, 8.81%) at lag 0-24 h, in cortisol of 1.25% (95%CI: 0.44%, 2.07%) at lag 0-48 h, and in alpha-amylase of 2.12% (95%CI: 0.53%, 3.71%) at lag 0-24 h, while associated with maximum decrement in lysozyme of 0.53% (95%CI: 0.12%, 0.95%) at lag 0-72 h. Increased PM_2.5 was linked to reduction in the richness and evenness of buccal microbe and o_Bacillales and o_Bacteroidales were identified as differential microbes after PM_2.5 inhalation. Bio-information analysis indicated that immunity system pathway was the most important enriched abundant process altered by PM_2.5 exposure. In summary, short-term PM_2.5 exposure may impair oral and respiratory health by inducing inflammatory and stress responses, weakening immune function and altering buccal mucosa microbial diversity.

Overflowing Disparities: Examining the Availability of Litter Bins in New York City

In the 1980s, activists' concerns about the disproportionate placements of landfills in low-income communities ignited the environmental justice movement. Today, similar issues of environmental injustice-the limited availability of litter bins across New York City (NYC) neighborhoods-remain unresolved. This study examines the association between NYC neighborhood income and litter bin availability. The NYC Department of Sanitation 2020 Litter Bin Inventory and archival measures of neighborhood composition and socioeconomic status were aggregated within NYC census tract neighborhoods. Multilevel Bayesian conditional autoregressive Poisson models estimated the prevalence rate ratio for counts of litter bins according to median household income in each census tract, accounting for spatial autocorrelation. Bivariate associations identified that census tracts with higher median household income had a greater prevalence of litter bins than census tracts with lower median household income; however, spatial autocorrelation attenuated the relationship between median household income and availability of litter bins. Further research is necessary to identify the spatially structured condition that accounted for the observed effect. The results warrant further investigation of both perceived and actual disparities in litter bin availability.

Association Between Sulfur Dioxide and Daily Inpatient Visits With Respiratory Diseases in Ganzhou, China: A Time Series Study Based on Hospital Data

Background

Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) has been reported to be related to the mortality of respiratory diseases, but the relationship between SO₂ and hospital inpatient visits with respiratory diseases and the potential impact of different seasons on this relationship is still unclear.

Methods

The daily average concentrations of air pollutants, including SO₂ and meteorological data in Ganzhou, China, from 2017 to 2019 were collected. The data on daily hospitalization for respiratory diseases from the biggest hospital in the city were extracted. The generalized additive models (GAM) and the distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) were employed to evaluate the association between ambient SO₂ and daily inpatient visits for respiratory diseases. Stratified analyses by gender, age, and season were performed to find their potential effects on this association.

Results

There is a positive exposure-response relationship between SO₂ concentration and relative risk of respiratory inpatient visits. Every 10 μg/m³ increase in SO₂ was related to a 3.2% (95% CI: 0.6–6.7%) exaltation in daily respiratory inpatient visits at lag3. In addition, SO₂ had a stronger association with respiratory inpatient visits in women, older adults (≥65 years), and warmer season (May-Oct) subgroups. The relationship between SO₂ and inpatient visits for respiratory diseases was robust after adjusting for other air pollutants, including PM₁₀, NO₂, O₃, and CO.

Conclusion

This time-series study showed that there is a positive association between short-term SO₂ exposure and daily respiratory inpatient visits. These results are important for local administrators to formulate environmental public health policies.

Effects of air pollution and green spaces on impaired lung function in children: a case-control study

The occurrences of impaired lung function during childhood could substantially influence the health states of the respiratory system in adults. So, the effects of air pollution and green spaces on impaired lung function in children were investigated in this study. The lung function of each student was tested every year from 2015 to 2017 and the method of case-control study was applied. 2087 students aged from 9 to 11 years old of primary schools in Tianjin were ultimately included in this study. The method of propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to minimize the confounding bias and the conditional logistic regression model was carried out to evaluate the effects of indoor and outdoor environmental risk factors on the occurrences of impaired lung function in children. For every interquartile range (IQR) increase in the mixture of six air pollutants at the lag1, lag2, and lag3 periods, the risks of getting impaired lung function were increased by 53.4%, 34.7%, and 16.9%, respectively. The protective effect of greenness at lag2 period (odds ratios (OR)) = 0.022 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.008-0.035)) was stronger than that at lag1and lag3 periods, respectively. Separate and combined effects of most air pollutants at different lag periods exerted hazardous effects on the lung function of students. Exposure to greenness had protective effects on the lung health of children.

Short-Term Acute Exposure to Wildfire Smoke and Lung Function among Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Officers

The increasing incidence of extreme wildfire is becoming a concern for public health. Although long-term exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with respiratory illnesses, reports on the association between short-term occupational exposure to wildfire smoke and lung function remain scarce. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from 218 Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers (mean age: 38 ± 9 years) deployed at the Fort McMurray wildfires in 2016. Individual exposure to air pollutants was calculated by integrating the duration of exposure with the air quality parameters obtained from the nearest air quality monitoring station during the phase of deployment. Lung function was measured using spirometry and body plethysmography. Association between exposure and lung function was examined using principal component linear regression analysis, adjusting for potential confounders. In our findings, the participants were predominantly male (71%). Mean forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁), and residual volume (RV) were 76.5 ± 5.9 and 80.1 ± 19.5 (% predicted). A marginal association was observed between air pollution and higher RV [β: 1.55; 95% CI: -0.28 to 3.37 per interquartile change of air pollution index], but not with other lung function indices. The association between air pollution index and RV was significantly higher in participants who were screened within the first three months of deployment (2.80; 0.91 to 4.70) than those screened later (-0.28; -2.58 to 2.03), indicating a stronger effect of air pollution on peripheral airways. Acute short-term exposure to wildfire-associated air pollutants may impose subtle but clinically important deleterious respiratory effects, particularly in the peripheral airways.

Detection and Quantification of Enteric Pathogens in Aerosols Near Open Wastewater Canals in Cities with Poor Sanitation

Urban sanitation infrastructure is inadequate in many low-income countries, leading to the presence of highly concentrated, uncontained fecal waste streams in densely populated areas. Combined with mechanisms of aerosolization, airborne transport of enteric microbes and their genetic material is possible in such settings but remains poorly characterized. We detected and quantified enteric pathogen-associated gene targets in aerosol samples near open wastewater canals (OWCs) or impacted (receiving sewage or wastewater) surface waters and control sites in La Paz, Bolivia; Kanpur, India; and Atlanta, USA, via multiplex reverse-transcription qPCR (37 targets) and ddPCR (13 targets). We detected a wide range of enteric targets, some not previously reported in extramural urban aerosols, with more frequent detections of all enteric targets at higher densities in La Paz and Kanpur near OWCs. We report density estimates ranging up to 4.7 × 10² gc per m_air³ across all targets including heat-stable enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, Campylobacter jejuni, enteroinvasive E. coli/Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., norovirus, and Cryptosporidium spp. Estimated 25, 76, and 0% of samples containing positive pathogen detects were accompanied by culturable E. coli in La Paz, Kanpur, and Atlanta, respectively, suggesting potential for viability of enteric microbes at the point of sampling. Airborne transmission of enteric pathogens merits further investigation in cities with poor sanitation.

Opportunities and Challenges of Renewable Energy Production in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world despite immense challenges towards access to sustainable energy supplies and modern energy technologies. The country is undertaking great effort towards the development of renewable energy technologies and green legacy. However, the largest share of energy consumption (≈87%) in Ethiopia is dominated by traditional fuels (charcoal, fuel wood, dung cakes, and agricultural residues) which pose various health and environmental risks. The country has an enormous amount of renewable energy potentials (e.g., solar, hydro, wind and geothermal), but only 5% of its full hydropower potential is exploited and others are not fully harvested or not well developed to date. This review paper provides a comprehensive assessment on renewable energy availability, potential, opportunity, and challenges in Ethiopia. We believe the information provided in this review will enlighten the current and future prospects of renewable energy deployment in Ethiopia.

Deciphering the origin of Cu, Pb and Zn contamination in school dust and soil of Dhaka, a megacity in Bangladesh

In recent decades, anthropogenic activities have resulted in road dust and roadside soil hosted metal(oid)s pollution in the urban environment. In the South-Asian megacity "Dhaka", schools are situated in the areas with high population density and high traffic emissions. As the school-going children are the most vulnerable receptor, school premises in Dhaka city represent an important yet overlooked exposure point to contaminated dust and soil. Therefore, the present study investigated the metal(oid)s (Cu, Pb, Zn and As) pollution in dust and soil at school compounds, explored their possible sources and estimated the associated human health risk. This study revealed that dust contained higher concentration of metal(oid)s than soil, and the Azimpur Govt. Girls School & College was identified as the most contaminated site. The enrichment of school dust with Cu, Zn and Pb were strictly related to the dense population and substantial traffic activity in the study areas. Arsenic content in school soil was several folds higher than its concentration in the upper crust. Natural and anthropogenic activities possibly posed a synergistic effect on such high soil As. The multivariate statistics suggested that Cu, Zn and Pb were likely to be originated from traffic-related activities, while Zr, Fe, Ti and Rb from natural sources, and K, Sr and Ca from industrial activities. The assessment of health risk suggested the children as a vulnerable receptor and ingestion was identified as the dominant pathway of dust and soil exposure. The hazard index (HI) values were lower than unity, suggesting no possible non-cancer health risk. Arsenic posed a lifetime carcinogenic risk to the population in the study area through soil ingestion and dermal adsorption.

Municipal Solid Waste Management and Adverse Health Outcomes: A Systematic Review

Municipal solid waste (MSW) can pose a threat to public health if it is not safely managed. Despite prior research, uncertainties remain and refurbished evidence is needed along with new approaches. We conducted a systematic review of recently published literature to update and expand the epidemiological evidence on the association between MSW management practices and resident populations' health risks. Studies published from January 2005 to January 2020 were searched and reviewed following PRISMA guidelines. Eligible MSW treatment or disposal sites were defined as landfills, dumpsites, incinerators, waste open burning, transfer stations, recycling sites, composting plants, and anaerobic digesters. Occupational risks were not assessed. Health effects investigated included mortality, adverse birth and neonatal outcomes, cancer, respiratory conditions, gastroenteritis, vector-borne diseases, mental health conditions, and cardiovascular diseases. Studies reporting on human biomonitoring for exposure were eligible as well. Twenty-nine studies were identified that met the inclusion criteria of our protocol, assessing health effects only associated with proximity to landfills, incinerators, and dumpsites/open burning sites. There was some evidence of an increased risk of adverse birth and neonatal outcomes for residents near each type of MSW site. There was also some evidence of an increased risk of mortality, respiratory diseases, and negative mental health effects associated with residing near landfills. Additionally, there was some evidence of increased risk of mortality associated with residing near incinerators. However, in many cases, the evidence was inadequate to establish a strong relationship between a specific exposure and outcomes, and the studies rarely assessed new generation technologies. Evidence gaps remain, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Exposure to heavy metals and its association with DNA oxidative damage in municipal waste incinerator workers in Shenzhen, China

Burning municipal waste produces a great deal of harmful heavy metals, which may lead to elevated exposure in incinerator workers and residents living nearby. However, relevant human exposure studies remain scarce, especially in China. This study aimed to determine the concentrations of ten heavy metals in urine of incinerator workers (n = 119, as the exposed group) and residents living nearby (n = 215, as the control group) from Shenzhen (China), and explore the associations between heavy metal exposure and DNA oxidative stress (indicated by 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine or 8-OHdG) in humans. The median urinary concentrations of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), selenium (Se) and 8-OHdG in the exposed group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05), suggesting occupational exposure elevated heavy metal intake for the incinerator workers. Nevertheless, there is no correlation statistically significant between the concentrations of any heavy metal and 8-OHdG in urine in the exposed group, indicating heavy metals releasing from waste incineration were not important factors to induce DNA oxidative stress. To our knowledge, this study firstly reported the concentrations of heavy metal in urine and their associations with DNA oxidative damage in waste incinerator workers in Shenzhen, China.

Interactions between ambient air pollution and obesity on lung function in children: The Seven Northeastern Chinese Cities (SNEC) Study

Children are vulnerable to air pollution-induced lung function deficits, and the prevalence of obesity has been increasing in children. To evaluate the joint effects of long-term PM₁ (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 1.0 μm) exposure and obesity on children's lung function, a cross-sectional sample of 6740 children (aged 7-14 years) was enrolled across seven northeastern Chinese cities from 2012 to 2013. Weight and lung function, including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF), were measured according to standardized protocols. Average PM₁, PM_2.5, PM₁₀ and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) exposure levels were estimated using a spatiotemporal model, and sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and ozone (O₃) exposure were estimated using data from municipal air monitoring stations. Two-level logistic regression and general linear models were used to analyze the joint effects of body mass index (BMI) and air pollutants. The results showed that long-term air pollution exposure was associated with lung function impairment and there were significant interactions with BMI. Associations were stronger among obese and overweight than normal weight participants (the adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for PM₁ and lung function impairments in three increasing BMI categories were 1.50 (1.07-2.11) to 2.55 (1.59-4.07) for FVC < 85% predicted, 1.44 (1.03-2.01) to 2.51 (1.53-4.11) for FEV₁ < 85% predicted, 1.34 (0.97-1.84) to 2.04 (1.24-3.35) for PEF < 75% predicted, and 1.34 (1.01-1.78) to 1.93 (1.26-2.95) for MMEF < 75% predicted). Consistent results were detected in linear regression models for PM₁, PM_2.5 and SO₂ on FVC and FEV₁ impairments (P_Interaction < 0.05). These modification effects were stronger among females and older participants. These results can provide policy makers with more comprehensive information for to develop strategies for preventing air pollution induced children's lung function deficits among children.

Influence of a Municipal Solid Waste Landfill on the Surrounding Environment: Landfill Vegetation as a Potential Risk of Allergenic Pollen

When the landfill use comes to end, important subsequent steps include aftercare, safety assurance, and ecological regeneration. Landfill revegetation is cost-effective and eco-friendly approach in the management of landfill areas, which serves the purpose of stabilization and provides a pleasant landscape. There are various vegetation types that can be planted, yet grass species are often used for low-cost reasons. Plants can be important sources of air pollution, particularly by grass pollen. The main goal of our study was to identify plant species that produce allergenic pollen. Long-term vegetation monitoring took place on three sites in the growing seasons of years 2008–2018. Studied objects were landfills located in the Czech Republic. The vegetation was assessed using a floristic survey of identified plant species. Plant species that produced allergens were recorded. During the monitoring, 298 plant species were determined. Plant species with allergenic pollen have a considerable share in the landfill vegetation. Thus, landfills are potential sources of various kinds of allergenic pollen. Moreover, our results indicated that there are three periods of pollen production: early spring, late spring, and early summer; late summer; and autumn. The second period is typical for the production of highly allergenic pollen by grasses. Most detected plant species with allergenic pollen are common for all monitored sites, which demonstrates that the vegetation of landfills is a significant source of allergenic pollen.
