Abstract
Environmental pollution and poor feed quality pose potential threats to aquatic organisms and human health, representing challenges for the aquaculture industry. In light of the rising demand for aquatic organisms, there is an urgent need to improve aquacultural production and protect the products from contamination. Char, a carbonaceous material derived through pyrolysis of organic carbon-rich biomass, has proven advantages in soil, air, and water remediation. While char's performance and the associated physicochemical characteristics depend strongly on the pyrolysis temperature, residence time, and feedstock type, char generally shows advantages in pollutant removal from the environment and livestock. This enables it to enhance the health and growth performance of livestock. Given the growing attention to char application in aquaculture in recent years, this review summarises major studies on three applications: aquacultural water treatment, sediment remediation, and char-feed supplement. Most of these studies have demonstrated char's positive effects on pollutant removal from organisms and aquacultural environments. Moreover, adopting char as fish feed can improve fish growth performance and the condition of their intestinal villi. However, due to insufficient literature, further investigation is needed into the mechanistic aspects of pollutants removal in aquatic organisms by char as a feed additive, such as the transportation of char inside aquatic organisms, the positive and negative effects of char on these products, and how char alters the gut microbiota community of these products. This paper presents an overview of the current application of char in aquaculture and highlights the research areas that require further investigation to enrich future studies.

Abstract
The Adriatic Sea plays a crucial role as both a significant fishing ground and a thriving trading market for small pelagic edible fish. Recognized for their nutritional value, these fish are esteemed for their high protein content and abundance of polyunsaturated omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, making them a sought-after and healthful food choice. Nevertheless, pelagic species can also serve as a reservoir for lipophilic organochlorine pollutants, posing potential risks to human health. In this study, we compared traditional classification methods traditional principal component analysis (PCA) and Ward's clustering with an advanced self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm in determining distribution patterns of 24 organochlorines and 19 fatty acids in sardine and anchovy samples taken from the eastern Adriatic. The outcomes reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the three approaches (PCA, Ward's clustering, and SOM). However, it is evident that SOM has proven to be the most effective in offering detailed information and data visualization. Although sardines and anchovies exhibit similar distribution patterns for p,p'-DDE, PCB-28, PCB-138, PCB-153, PCB-118, and PCB-170, they differ in the concentrations of fatty acids such as stearic, palmitic, myristic, oleic, docosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acid. Our findings supply valuable insights for environmental authorities and fish consumers concerning the potential risks associated with organochlorines in these two types of fish.

Abstract
CONTEXT Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is prevalent in 25-30% of British and European populations, representing a potential global public health crisis. Marine omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids offer well-evidenced benefits to NAFLD biomarkers; however, the effect of plant-based n-3 has not been evaluated with a systematic review and meta-analysis. OBJECTIVE The review aimed to systematically evaluate the effect of plant-based n-3 supplementation on NAFLD surrogate biomarkers and parameters. DATA SOURCES Medline (EBSCO), PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCO), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, and Google Scholar databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials published between January 1970 and March 2022 evaluating the impact of plant-based n-3 interventions on diagnosed NAFLD. The review followed the PRISMA checklist and is PROSPERO registered (CRD42021251980). DATA EXTRACTION A random-effects model and generic inverse variance methods synthesized quantitative data, followed by a leave-one-out method for sensitivity analysis. We identified 986 articles; after the application of selection criteria, six studies remained with 362 patients with NAFLD. RESULTS The meta-analysis showed that plant-based n-3 fatty acid supplementation significantly reduced alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (mean difference: 8.04 IU/L; 95% confidence interval: 14.70, 1.38; I2 = 48.61%) and plasma/serum triglycerides (44.51 mg/dL; 95% confidence interval: -76.93, -12.08; I2 = 69.93%), alongside body-composition markers in patients with NAFLD (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Plant-based n-3 fatty acid supplementation improves ALT enzyme biomarkers, triglycerides, body mass index, waist circumference, and weight loss when combined with lifestyle interventions to increase physical activity and a calorie-controlled diet. Further research is needed to identify the most effective plant-based n-3 sources in larger numbers of patients with NAFLD over longer study durations. Abstract
The objectives of this study were to assess concentrations of three groups of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 44 fish oil-based food supplements, to estimate their daily intake by consumers and, to evaluate the compliance of the oil samples with the oil origin declarations (cod liver oil or fish oil). The concentrations of ∑PCBs (7 congeners), OCPs (19 compounds, represented mainly by ∑DDTs), ∑PBDEs (10 congeners), and ∑PAHs (16 compounds) found in samples ranged between 0.15-55.7 µg kg-1, 0.93-72.8 µg kg-1, 0.28-27.5 µg kg-1, and 0.32-51.9 µg kg-1, respectively. Besides, the authenticity of the oils was assessed based on the fingerprints obtained by DART-HRMS, an ambient mass spectrometry technique. Four samples declared as fish oil were probably prepared from cod liver oil, which is much cheaper. Furthermore, these samples contained elevated concentrations of halogenated POPs when compared to supplements produced from fish oil.

Abstract
Nutrient metabolism is required to maintain energy balance in animal organisms, and fatty acids play an irreplaceable role in fat metabolism. In this study, microRNA sequencing was performed on mammary gland tissues collected from cows during early, peak, and late lactation to determine miRNA expression profiles. Differentially expressed miRNA (miR-497) was selected for functional studies of fatty acid substitution. Simulants of miR-497 impaired fat metabolism [triacylglycerol (TAG) and cholesterol], whereas knockdown of miR-497 promoted fat metabolism in bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) in vitro. In addition, in vitro experiments on BMECs showed that miR-497 could down-regulate C16:1, C17:1, C18:1, and C20:1 as well as long-chain polyunsaturated fats. Thus, these data expand the discovery of a critical role for miR-497 in mediating adipocyte differentiation. Through bioinformatics analysis and further validation, we identified large tumor suppressor kinase 1 (LATS1) as a target of miR-497. siRNA-LATS1 increased concentrations of fatty acids, TAG, and cholesterol in cells, indicating an active role of LATS1 in milk fat metabolism. In summary, miR-497/LATS1 can regulate the biological processes associated with TAG, cholesterol, and unsaturated fatty acid synthesis in cells, providing an experimental basis for further elucidating the mechanistic regulation of lipid metabolism in BMECs.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of dietary commercial feed (n = 50,025 in triplicate, named group PF for soil dike pond, sampling n = 7; n = 15,000 in triplicate, WF for water tank, n = 8), iced fish (n = 50,025 in triplicate, PI, n = 7), and a combination of both (n = 50,025 in triplicate, PFI, n = 8) on different metabolic parameters of the largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (0.67 ± 0.09 g, culture period from June 2017 to July 2018). Throughout the experimental period, different areas of water (including input water of the front, middle of the pond, and from the drain off at the back) and their mixed samples were simultaneously analyzed to find the source of the main infectious bacteria. Various feeding strategies may differentially affect body composition and shape the gut microbiota, but the mode of action has not been determined. Results showed that no significant differences were found in the growth performance except for the product yield using a different culture mode (PFI vs. WF). For muscle composition, the higher ∑SFA, ∑MUFA, ∑n-6PUFA, and 18:3n-3/18:2n-6 levels were detected in largemouth bass fed with iced fish, while enrichment in ∑n-3PUFA and ∑HUFA was detected in largemouth bass fed with commercial feed. For the gut microbiota, Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes were the most dominant phyla among all the gut samples. The abundance of Firmicutes and Tenericutes significantly decreased and later increased with iced fish feeding. The relative abundance of species from the Clostridia, Mollicutes, Mycoplasmatales, and families (Clostridiaceae and Mycoplasmataceae) significantly increased in the feed plus iced fish (PFI) group relative to that in the iced fish (PI) group. Pathways of carbohydrate metabolism and the digestive system were enriched in the commercial feed group, whereas infectious bacterial disease resistance-related pathways were enriched in the iced fish group, corresponding to the higher rate of death, fatty liver disease, and frequency and duration of cyanobacteria outbreaks. Feeding with iced fish resulted in more activities in the digestive system and energy metabolism, more efficient fatty acid metabolism, had higher ∑MUFA, and simultaneously had the potential for protection against infectious bacteria from the environment through a change in intestinal microbiota in the pond of largemouth bass culturing. Finally, the difference in feed related to the digestive system may contribute to the significant microbiota branch in the fish gut, and the input and outflow of water affects the intestinal flora in the surrounding water and in the gut, which in turn affects growth and disease resistance.

Abstract
Vitellogenins (Vtgs) are essential for female reproduction in oviparous animals, yet the exact roles and mechanisms remain unknown. In the present study, we knocked out vtg1, which is the most abundant Vtg in zebrafish, Danio rerio via the CRISPR/Cas 9 technology. We aimed to identify the roles of Vtg1 and related mechanisms in reproduction and development. We found that, the Vtg1-deficient female zebrafish reduced gonadosomatic index, egg production, yolk granules and mature follicles in ovary compared to the wide type (WT). Moreover, the Vtg1-deficient zebrafish diminished hatching rates, cumulative survival rate, swimming capacity and food intake, but increased malformation rate, and delayed swim bladder development during embryo and early-larval phases. The Vtg1-deficiency in female broodstock inhibited docosahexaenoic acid-enriched phosphatidylcholine (DHA-PC) transportation from liver to ovary, which lowered DHA-PC content in ovary and offspring during larval stage. However, the Vtg1-deficient zebrafish increased gradually the total DHA-PC content via exogeneous food intake, and the differences in swimming capacity and food intake returned to normal as they matured. Furthermore, supplementing Vtg1-deficient zebrafish with dietary PC and DHA partly ameliorated the impaired female reproductive capacity and larval development during early phases. This study indicates that, DHA and PC carried by Vtg1 are crucial for female fecundity, and affect embryo and larval development through maternal-nutrition effects. This is the first study elucidating the nutrient and physiological functions of Vtg1 and the underlying biochemical mechanisms in fish reproduction and development.

Abstract
This study has investigated the photochemical degradation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) and some organochlorine pesticides, such as hexachlorobenzene (HCB) or dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) in hexane under UV irradiation at 254 nm. All pollutants were completely degraded after 3.5 h of exposition to the UV light. Moreover, this technique was applied to remove persistent organic pollutants from fish oil, with eliminations of a 34% for PCDD/Fs, 53% for PCBs, 59% for HCB, 67% for PBDEs and 73% for DDTs after 12 h of exposition to the UV light (254 nm). Dioxin-like PCBs increased their concentration after the treatment, probably due to the dehalogenation of other more chlorinated congeners. The fatty acids analysis of the fish oil revealed that the most important ω-3 fatty acids -EPA and DHA-were degraded to 67 and 70% of their initial content respectively. For these reasons elimination of persistent organic pollutants with photochemical treatment has limited applications for oils with food-purposes. However, it still can be a useful technique for decontamination of industrial oils.

Abstract
Unregulated use of chlorpyrifos (CPF) and monocrotophos (MCP) in agriculture casts adverse effects on non-target freshwater mollusc, Pila globosa and humans. Levels of CPF and MCP were assessed in the paddy field from the edible foot tissue of apple snail (Pila globosa) exposed to low (1.5 ml l-1 water) and high (2.5 ml l-1 water) agricultural doses for 48 h to determine human health risk associated with consumption of tissue. CPF and MCP were extracted by liquid-liquid extraction and analysed by QuEChERS method using GC-MS/MS. For low and high concentrations of CPF exposure, the pesticide residue levels in the paddy field water ranged from 4.43 to 1.08 and 5.13 to 1.53 µg l-1, respectively, whereas, for low and high concentrations of MCP exposure, the residue levels in water ranged from 16.43 to 5.78 and 31.41 to 9. 27 µg l-1, respectively, for 3-48 h. In the foot tissue, residues ranged from 4.36 to 15.54 µg kg-1 for low-dose CPF, 7.1 to 18.05 µg kg-1for high-dose CPF and from 5.28 to 12.3 µg kg-1 and 8.94 to 18.21 µg kg-1 for low and high dose of MCP, respectively, during 3 to 48 h of exposure. Pesticides in the tissue were lower than the recommended maximum residue limits. Estimated health risk for adults and children revealed that the estimated daily intake values did not exceed the threshold values of acceptable daily intake. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health effects were less than the safe value of 1.0 and 1 × 10-6, respectively, suggesting that CPF and MCP residues from ingestion of apple snail posed low risks to both children and adults. This preliminary result suggests regular monitoring of pesticides residues in Pila globosa collected from the paddy field of India.

Abstract
Benefits and risks of the fish consumption should be assessed to balance the ingestion of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and adverse chemicals. Persistent organic pollutants-POPs (organochlorine pesticides-OCPs and polychlorinated biphenyls-PCB), macro- and micro-elements and fatty acid contents were determined in six fish species from the Adriatic Sea to assess health risks for consumers (worst-case scenario, diseases development risks and benefit-risk). 16 element, 24 POPs and 14 fatty acid contents were determined in six pelagic species which can be used in human diet. Element concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), POPs by high-resolution gas chromatography and fatty acid content by gas-liquid chromatography. Diet based on chub mackerel and round sardinella showed lower daily intake (DI) of POPs and highest DI of essential omega-3 fatty acids than other investigated species. Lower ingestion of toxic elements can be observed by consuming anchovy and round sardinella. Based on POP concentrations, there was not observed non-carcinogenic (HI) nor carcinogenic (CR) risks for consumers. Based on element concentrations, there was low HI (0.1 ≥ HI ≥ 1), while the maximum HIs and outlier values (horse mackerel and anchovy samples) implied the presence of HI (HI > 1). The most significant contributor to total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks was inorganic arsenic (inorganic As). Acceptable CR for consumers was assessed, but maximum CR for consumers of horse mackerel and anchovy (CR ≥ 1 × 10-6) showed adverse effects on human health. There were low HIs for developing cardiovascular, nervous, and reproductive diseases, and maximum HIs were higher than 1. Acceptable (1 × 10-4≥CR ≥ 1 × 10-6) risks were observed for developing cancer of nervous system and reproductive organs. Among investigated fish samples, those with higher ƩBR (benefit-risks) and BR for arsenic (As) than median value have a higher risk than benefits in the human diet.

Abstract
As the use of food supplements increases, voices are being raised questioning the safety of these products. As a contribution to understanding the trace and major elemental composition of food supplements and their potential health risks, this study presents concentrations of 71 elements in 138 supplements, categorised into synthetic products and three groups of products with natural ingredients. Concentrations were converted into average daily doses (ADDs) and compared to tolerable daily intakes (TDIs). For elements where we found significant ADDs relative to the TDI a comparison was also made to the normal dietary intake. Our main findings are that: 1) Most elements display highly variable concentrations in food supplements; more so than in normal foodstuff; 2) For ten of the analysed elements some products rendered ADDs > 50 % of the TDI. Half of the elements were essential (Fe, Mn, Se, Mo, Zn), and as such motivated in food supplements. The other half (As, Pb, Cd, Al, Ni) represent non-essential and highly toxic elements, where the occurrence in food supplements ought to be viewed as contamination. Although none of these toxic metals were declared on any product's table of content, several products gave high ADDs - in several cases even exceeding the TDIs; 3) The risk of reaching high ADDs for the toxic elements is strongly associated with products that contain marine ingredients (e.g. algae, mussels etc), and to some degree products of terrestrial plant-based origin. The health of consumers would benefit if food regulatory frameworks were updated to better address the risks of food supplements occasionally being contaminated with different toxic metals, for example by setting maximum permissible concentrations for a longer list of elements.

Abstract
Impact of the factors of the aquatic environment is an inevitable aspect of the life of fish as poikilothermic animals and provokes responses in their organisms. The study focused on determining peculiarities in the composition of the metabolic products in the tissues of different age and sex groups of common bream Abramis brama (L.) depending on the living conditions in the water reservoirs of the Upper Volga. The fish were captured in the fattening period in summer and autumn, measured, weighed, identifying sex, maturity stage of the gonads and age. In the muscles, liver and gonads of bream, we analyzed the contents of water, dry matter, lipids, protein, ash and carbohydrates using the standard techniques. The contents of biochemical components in the organism of bream were to a higher degree determined by the peculiarities of the living conditions rather than sex and age of the individuals. In the muscles and liver of bream living in the conditions of increased water temperature and low concentration of oxygen, the concentrations of protein and ash were lower. In the same tissues of bream from the water bodies with high concentrations of pollutants in the water and benthic deposits, we found increased fat content. The muscles of male bream contained less protein and more carbohydrates than females and juvenile individuals, and the muscles of juveniles had less fat. The environmental factors had greater influence on the content of the metabolic products in the liver of bream than sex, and only females had higher ash content than males. The testes had more fat and less protein than the ovaries. During the transition of the gonads from maturity stage II to III, the contents of dry matter and lipids in them decreased. We determined that the environmental factors have stronger impact on biochemical parameters in the tissues of bream than age, because we found no general age patterns in the dynamics of biochemical components, except the liver, in which the highest content of organic compounds was found in individuals aged 6 to 10 years. Water heated by the Hydro Power Plant positively influenced the young bream, as indicated by higher content of metabolic products in individuals aged 5+ than older groups and bream from the surveyed water bodies. Monitoring of the physiological condition of bream focusing on the contents of metabolic products in the tissues may provide necessary data for successful regulation of bream populations in the water reservoirs of the Upper Volga.

Abstract
Dietary supplements based on fish oils might be contaminated with thermal processing contaminants, which are generated during the fish oil deodorisation. In the study, 30 samples of dietary supplements were analysed in terms of the occurrence of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol esters (3-MCPDE), 2-monochloropropane-1,3-diol esters (2-MCPDE) and glycidyl esters (GE). The results showed that the highest levels of 3-MCPDE (mean: 1461 µg kg-1) as well as 2-MCPDE (mean: 357 µg kg-1) were observed in the products containing shark liver oil. In the case of GE, they were mainly detected in the supplements including shark liver and cod liver oils. Although the results indicated that the consumption of the investigated supplements constituted no more than 1% of tolerable daily intake (TDI), the occurrence of MCPDE and GE in fish oil dietary supplements with a special attention to the origin of ester precursors should be thoroughly investigated in further studies.

Abstract
Environmental estrogenic compounds are important pollutants, which are widely distributed in natural water bodies. They produce various adverse effects on fish, but their concentration-dependent toxicities in fish metabolism and health are not fully understood. This study investigated the effects of 17β-estradiol (E2) and bisphenol A (BPA) at low and high concentrations on lipid deposition, inflammation and antioxidant response in male zebrafish. We measured fish growth parameters, gonad development, lipid contents and the activities of inflammatory and antioxidant enzymes, as well as their mRNA expressions. All E2 and BPA concentrations used increased body weight, damaged gonad structure and induced feminization in male zebrafish. The exposure of zebrafish to E2 and BPA promoted lipid accumulation by increasing total fat, liver triglycerides and free fatty acid contents, and also upregulated lipogenic genes expression, although they decreased total cholesterol content. Notably, zebrafish exposed to low concentrations of E2 (200 ng/L) and BPA (100 μg/L) had higher lipid synthesis and deposition compared to high concentrations (2000 ng/L and 2000 μg/L, respectively). However, the high concentrations of E2 and BPA increased inflammation and antioxidant response. Furthermore, BPA caused greater damage to fish gonad development and more severe lipid peroxidation compared to E2. Overall, the results suggest that the toxic effects of E2 and BPA on zebrafish are concentration-dependent such that, the relative low concentrations used induced lipid deposition, whereas the high ones caused adverse effects on inflammation and antioxidant response.

Abstract
Thraustochytrids have been isolated from different aquatic systems; however, few studies have reported their occurrence in Antarctica. In this study, 13 strains close to strains belonging to the genera Oblongichytrium, Thraustochytrium, and Aurantiochytrium were isolated from seawater samples collected near the Antarctic Base Professor Julio Escudero (S 62°12'57' E 58°57'35″). Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was found in the total lipids of all the isolates; DHA content of the biomass (dry weight) varied between 3.3 and 33 mg/g under the growth conditions for isolation. Five of the Antarctic thraustochytrids were able to accumulate lipids at levels higher than 20% w/w. Two strains, RT2316-7 and RT2316-13, were selected to test the effect of the incubation temperature (at 5°C for 14 days and at 15°C for 5 days). Incubation temperature had little effect on the lipid content and biomass yield; however, its effect on the fatty acid composition was significant (p < .05). The low incubation temperature favored the accumulation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), palmitic acid and stearic acid in the total lipids of RT2316-7. Percentage of EPA, DHA and the omega-6 fatty acid dihomo-γ-linolenic acid of total fatty acids of RT2316-13 was higher at the low incubation temperature. RT2316-13 accumulated the highest lipid content (30.0 ± 0.5%) with a carbon to nitrogen mass ratio equal to 16.9. On the contrary, lipid accumulation in RT2316-7 occurred at high concentration of the nitrogen sources (monosodium glutamate or yeast extract). The capability to accumulate lipids with a fatty acid profile that can be tuned through cultivation temperature make the Antarctic thraustochytrid RT2316-13 a candidate for the production of lipids with different uses.
