Temperature and pH sensitive composite for rapid and effective removal of sulfonylurea herbicides in aqueous solution

Toxicological analysis of Eisenia fetida in soil under the coexistence of rockwool substrate andtricyclazole

This study investigated the combined effects of rockwool, a novel seedling substrate, and tricyclazole (TCA) on the bioavailability of TCA to Eisenia fetida. The single addition of rockwool and TCA alone to the soil inhibited the growth of E. fetida. A high concentration (300 mg·L-1) of TCA significantly decreased the biomass of E. fetida. The addition of 20-mesh rockwool reduced this effect on earthworm biomass by decreasing the soil TCA through adsorption, effectively mitigating TCA bioaccumulation in earthworms. A mechanistic analysis showed that the Mg-O functional group on the rockwool surface combined with the CC functional group in TCA to generate Mg-O-C, and the adsorption process was dominated by chemisorption. Toxicology experiments demonstrated that malondialdehyde and cellulase could be used as biomarkers of inhibitory effects of combined rockwool and TCA in soil on E. fetida. Macrogenomic analyses revealed that small particle sizes and high concentrations of rockwool caused co-stress effects on earthworms when TCA was present. When the particle size of rockwool increased, the toxic effect of TCA on earthworms instead decreased at higher rockwool concentrations. Therefore, in practical agricultural production, the particle size of rockwool can be controlled to realize the adsorption of TCA and reduce the toxic effects of TCA and rockwool on earthworms.

The adsorption effects of biochar on carbofuran in water and the mixture toxicity of biochar-carbofuran in rats

Carbofuran, a widely used carbamate insecticide, is frequently detected in water. In this study, a high-performance adsorbent (WAB4) for carbofuran was obtained from laboratory-synthesized biochars. The maximum adsorption of carbofuran by WAB4 reaches 113.7 mg/g approximately. The adsorption of carbofuran by biochar was a multi-molecular layer and the adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9984) and Freundlich isotherm model (R2 = 0.99). Importantly, an in vivo rat model was used to assess the combined toxicological effects of biochar-carbofuran complexes. The toxicity of the complexes (LD50 > 12 mg/kg) is lower than that of carbofuran (LD50 = 7.9 mg/kg) alone. The damage of biochar-carbofuran complex on rat liver and lung is significantly less than that of carbofuran. The Cmax and bioavailability of carbofuran were found to be reduced by 64% and 68%, respectively, when biochar was present, by UPLC-MS/MS analysis of carbofuran in rat plasma. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the biochar-carbofuran complex is relatively stable in the gastrointestinal tract, by performing a carbofuran release assay in artificial gastrointestinal fluids in vitro. Collectively, biochar is a bio-friendly material for the removal of carbofuran from water.

Removal of emergent pollutants: A review on recent updates and future perspectives on polysaccharide-based composites vis-à-vis traditional adsorbents

There is a growing incidence in the presence of emergent pollutants like the pesticides and pharmaceuticals in water bodies. The matter of environmental concern is their synthetic and persistent nature which has resulted in induced toxicity/damaging effect to the vital functioning of the different organs in the aquatic community. Traditional adsorbents have exhibited limitations like low stability and minimum reuse ability. Composites of such adsorbents with polysaccharides have demonstrated distinct features like improved surface area, porosity, adsorptivity; improved reusability and structural integrity; improved mechanical strength, thermal stability when applied for the removal of the emergent pollutants. The biocompatibility and biodegradability of such fabricated composites is established; thereby making the water treatment process cost effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly. The present review has dealt with an in-depth, up-dated literature compilation of traditional as well as polysaccharide based composite adsorbents and addressed their performance evaluation for the removal of pharmaceuticals and pesticides from wastewater. A comparative study has revealed the merits of polysaccharide based composites and discussions have been made with a focus on future research directions in the related area.

Health effects of herbicides and its current removal strategies

The continually expanding global population has necessitated increased food supply production. Thus, agricultural intensification has been required to keep up with food supply demand, resulting in a sharp rise in pesticide use. The pesticide aids in the prevention of potential losses caused by pests, plant pathogens, and weeds, but excessive use over time has accumulated its occurrence in the environment and subsequently rendered it one of the emerging contaminants of concern. This review highlights the sources and classification of herbicides and their fate in the environment, with a special focus on the effects on human health and methods to remove herbicides. The human health impacts discussion was in relation to toxic effects, cell disruption, carcinogenic impacts, negative fertility effects, and neurological impacts. The removal treatments described herein include physicochemical, biological, and chemical treatment approaches, and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Also, alternative, green, and sustainable treatment options were discussed to shed insight into effective treatment technologies for herbicides. To conclude, this review serves as a stepping stone to a better environment with herbicides.

Facile fabrication of a broad-spectrum starch/poly(α-l-lysine) hydrogel adsorbent with thermal/pH-sensitive IPN structure through simultaneous dual-click strategy

A thermal/pH-sensitive interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel was prepared facilely from starch and poly(α-l-lysine) through amino-anhydride and azide-alkyne double-click reactions in one pot. The synthesized polymers and hydrogels were systematically characterized using different analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and rheometer. The preparation conditions of the IPN hydrogel were optimized via one-factor experiments. Experimental results indicated the IPN hydrogel possessed pH and temperature sensitivity. Effect of different parameters (pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, ionic strength, and temperature) on adsorption behavior were investigated in monocomponent system with cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic Eosin Y (EY) as model pollutants. The results indicated that the adsorption process of the IPN hydrogel for MB and EY followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption data for MB and EY fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating monolayer chemisorption. The good adsorption performance was due to various active functional groups (-COOH, -OH, -NH₂, etc.) in the IPN hydrogel. The strategy described here opens up a new way for preparing IPN hydrogel. The as-prepared hydrogel exhibits potential application and bright prospects as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment.

Rapid and efficient removal of multiple aqueous pesticides by one-step construction boric acid modified biochar

Tricyclazole, propiconazole, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam are commonly used pesticides in paddy fields. It is necessary and practical to remove pesticides from the water environment because the low utilization rate of pesticides will produce residues in the water environment. It is known that there are few studies on the preparation of biochar adsorption pesticides by the walnut shell and few studies on the removal of tricyclazole and propiconazole. Based on this, this paper used the walnut shell as raw material and boric acid as an activator to prepare biochar by the one-step method. The boric acid modified walnut shell biochar (WAB4) with a specific surface area of 640.6 m² g^-1, exhibited the high adsorption capacity of all four pesticides (>70%) at pH 3-9. The adsorption capacities of tricyclazole, propiconazole, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam were 171.67, 112.27, 156.40, and 137.46 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption kinetics fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm curves conformed to the Freundlich isotherm model. The adsorption of pesticides by WAB4 was associated with hydrogen bonding, pore filling, hydrophobic effects, and π-π interactions. More significantly, WAB4 has excellent adsorption capacity compared to other adsorbents for real water samples. Finally, walnut shell biochar has no significant acute toxicity to Daphnia magna. This work shows that walnut shell-based biochar has a good effect on the removal of pesticides at a wide range of pH and is economical and safe, providing a new idea for the removal of pesticides in water.

A Review on Recent Innovations of Pretreatment and Analysis Methods for Sulfonylurea Herbicides

Sulfonylurea herbicides (SUHs) are widely used in agriculture because of their low dosage, low cost, and high selectivity. However, due to improper use and lack of effective management, their residues pose a threat to the human health through environment and food pollution. Therefore, there is a need for simple, quick, economical, and effective methods to analyze SUHs in plant-derived foods, crops, and environmental samples. The present article presents a comprehensive review of the pretreatment and analytical technologies used for SUHs in various sample matrices, focusing on the developments since 2010. The main pretreatment methods include liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, QuEChERS, and different microextraction methods, whereas analytical methods mainly include liquid chromatography coupled with different detectors, capillary electrophoresis, among others. In addition, the present study also compared the advantages and disadvantages of the methods and the future development is prospected.

Seasonal variations in atrazine degradation in a typical semienclosed bay of the northwest Pacific ocean

Pesticides are widely used to alleviate pest pressure in agricultural systems, and atrazine is a typical diffuse pollutant and serves a sensitivity index for environmental characteristics. Based on the physicochemical properties of parent substances, degradation products of pesticides may pose a greater threat to aquatic ecosystems than pesticides. Atrazine and three primary degradation products (deethylatrazine (DEA), deisopropylatrazine (DIA) and didealkylatrazine (DDA)) were investigated in a semienclosed bay of the western Pacific Ocean. Seasonal surface water and suspended particulate sediment (SPS) samples were collected from the estuary and bay in January, April, and August 2019. The level of pesticide contamination was lower in the bay than in the estuary, and the pesticide concentration in the dissolved phase was higher than that in the adsorbed phase. The average concentrations of atrazine and the three degradation products in the three seasons ranged from 2.42 to 328.46 ng/L in water and from 0.07 to 12.75 ng/L in SPS. The proportion of atrazine among the four detected pollutants decreased from 0.7 to 0.1 in surface water and from 0.3 to 0.1 in SPS over the seasons. As the main degradation products, the concentration proportions of DDA and DEA reached as high as 0.6 in August. The ratio of DEA to atrazine (DEA/ATR) increased from January to August, which indicated the progressive degradation process in the bay. Single-factor analysis of variance and principal component analysis indicated that atrazine degradation was sensitive to temperature, dissolved oxygen, and salinity. These three factors accounted for almost 70% of the seasonal variance in atrazine without a quantification assessment of photolysis or bacteria. The spatial distributions of DEA in the three seasons demonstrated that wind and currents also played important roles in pollutant redistribution. The seasonal temporal and spatial correlations between water and SPS demonstrated the degradation patterns of atrazine in marine conditions, supporting the need for future detailed toxicity studies.

Recyclable nitrogen-containing chitin-derived carbon microsphere as sorbent for neonicotinoid residues adsorption and analysis

Chitin-derived three-dimensional nanomaterials has tremendous potential in pesticide residue analysis as an attractive green substitute for toxic solvents. The work presented herein focuses on constructing the environmentally friendly nitrogen-containing chitin-derived carbon microspheres (N-CCMP) for the efficient adsorption of neonicotinoid pesticides (NPs) including acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam. The N-CCMP displayed hierarchical porous structure, uniform size distribution, and excellent specific surface area of 680.8 m²  g^-1. The N-CCMP with N-heterocyclic ring structure and surface oxygen functional groups exhibited good affinity to NPs, which was beneficial for the rapid adsorption. Then, the N-CCMP were utilized as sorbent in extraction of NP residues. Under the optimum conditions, the relative recoveries in water and juice sample were in the range of 85 %-116 % and 74 %-108 %, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.1 %∼5.2 % and 0.7 %∼5.2 %, respectively. The extraction performance of N-CCMP were still over 80 % after 5 times of reuse.

Dissipation, adsorption-desorption, and potential transformation products of pinoxaden in soil

This study established and validated a simple and sensitive analytical approach for determining pinoxaden residues in soil. The dissipation and adsorption-desorption of pinoxaden in four kinds of Chinese soil were comprehensively investigated for the first time, and the possible metabolic products and pathways were identified. The developed method was successfully applied in dissipation and adsorption-desorption trials. Several influential factors, including temperature, organic matter, and moisture content, affected the dissipation rate of pinoxaden in soil. During the dissipation process, 1 hydrolytic intermediate and 13 possible transformation products were identified, and predicted metabolic pathways were composed of electron rearrangement, oxidation, cyclization, carboxylation, and so on. Both the adsorption and desorption isotherms of pinoxaden in four kinds of Chinese soil followed the Freundlich equation, and the Freundlich K_f values were positively correlated with the soil cation exchange capacity. According to the calculated Gibbs free energies, the adsorption of pinoxaden was an endothermic reaction and mainly a physical process. These results could provide some useful data for the determination of pinoxaden in other matrices and the evaluation of the environmental fate of pinoxaden in soil and other ecosystems.

Chitosan Derivatives and Their Application in Biomedicine

Chitosan is a product of the deacetylation of chitin, which is widely found in nature. Chitosan is insoluble in water and most organic solvents, which seriously limits both its application scope and applicable fields. However, chitosan contains active functional groups that are liable to chemical reactions; thus, chitosan derivatives can be obtained through the chemical modification of chitosan. The modification of chitosan has been an important aspect of chitosan research, showing a better solubility, pH-sensitive targeting, an increased number of delivery systems, etc. This review summarizes the modification of chitosan by acylation, carboxylation, alkylation, and quaternization in order to improve the water solubility, pH sensitivity, and the targeting of chitosan derivatives. The applications of chitosan derivatives in the antibacterial, sustained slowly release, targeting, and delivery system fields are also described. Chitosan derivatives will have a large impact and show potential in biomedicine for the development of drugs in future.
