Biofabricated nanomaterials in sustainable agriculture: insights, challenges and prospects

One ever-evolving and ever-demanding critical human endeavour is the provision of food security for the growing world population. This can be done by adopting sustainable agriculture through horizontal (expanding the arable land area) and vertical (intensifying agriculture through sound technological approaches) interventions. Customized formulated nanomaterials have numerous advantages. With their specialized physico-chemical properties, some nanoparticulated materials improve the plant's natural development and stress tolerance and some others are good nanocarriers. Nanocarriers in agriculture often coat chemicals to form composites having utilities with crop productivity enhancement abilities, environmental management (such as ecotoxicity reduction ability) and biomedicines (such as the ability to control and target the release of useful nanoscale drugs). Ag, Fe, Zn, TiO2, ZnO, SiO2and MgO nanoparticles (NPs), often employed in advanced agriculture, are covered here. Some NPs used for various extended purposes in modern farming practices, including disease diagnostics and seed treatment are also covered. Thus, nanotechnology has revolutionized agrotechnology, which holds promise to transform agricultural (ecosystems as a whole to ensure food security in the future. Considering the available literature, this article further probes the emergent regulatory issues governing the synthesis and use of nanomaterials in the agriculture sector. If applied responsibly, nanomaterials could help improve soil health. This article provides an overview of the nanomaterials used in the distribution of biomolecules, to aid in devising a safer and eco-friendly sustainable agriculture strategy. Through this, agri-systems that depend on advanced farming practices might function more effectively and enhance agri-productivity to meet the food demand of the rising world population.

Prospects and challenges of nanopesticides in advancing pest management for sustainable agricultural and environmental service

The expanding global population and the use of conventional agrochemical pesticides have led to the loss of crop yield and food shortages. Excessive pesticide used in agriculture risks life forms by contaminating soil and water resources, necessitating the use of nano agrochemicals. This article focuses on synthesis moiety and use of nanopesticides for enhanced stability, controlled release mechanisms, improved efficacy, and reduced pesticide residue levels. The current literature survey offered regulatory frameworks for commercial deployment of nanopesticides and evaluated societal and environmental impacts. Various physicochemical and biological processes, especially microorganisms and advanced oxidation techniques are important in treating pesticide residues through degradation mechanisms. Agricultural waste could be converted into nanofibers for sustainable composites production, new nanocatalysts, such as N-doped TiO2 and bimetallic nanoparticles for advancing pesticide degradation. Microbial and enzyme methods have been listed as emerging nanobiotechnology tools in achieving a significant reduction of chlorpyrifos and dimethomorph for the management of pesticide residues in agriculture. Moreover, cutting-edge biotechnological alternatives to conventional pesticides are advocated for promoting a transition towards more sustainable pest control methodologies. Application of nanopesticides could be critical in addressing environmental concern due to its increased mobility, prolonged persistence and ecosystem toxicity. Green synthesis of nanopesticides offers solutions to environmental risks associated and using genetic engineering techniques may induce pest and disease resistance for agricultural sustainability. Production of nanopesticides from biological sources is necessary to develop and implement comprehensive strategies to uphold agricultural productivity while safeguarding environmental integrity.

Ageing influences the toxicity of two innovative nanofertilizers to the soil invertebrates Enchytraeus crypticus and Folsomia candida

The increasing global food demand is threatening the sustainability of agrifood production systems. The intensification of agricultural practices, with inadequate use of pesticides and fertilizers, poses major challenges to the good functioning of agroecosystems and drastically degrades the soil quality. Nanotechnology is expected to optimize the current farming practices and mitigate some associated impacts. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of nanomaterials with high potential for use in agricultural productions, mostly due to their sustained release of nutrients. Considering its novelty and lack of studies on the terrestrial ecosystem, it is essential to assess potential long-term harmful consequences to non-target organisms. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of Zn-Al-NO3 LDH and Mg-Al-NO3 LDH ageing on the survival and reproduction of two soil invertebrate species Enchytraeus crypticus and Folsomia candida. We postulated that the toxicity of nanomaterials to soil invertebrates would change with time, such that the ageing of soil amendments would mediate their impacts on both species. Our results showed that the toxicity of LDHs was species-dependent, with Zn-Al-NO3 LDH being more toxic to E. crypticus, while Mg-Al-NO3 LDH affected more F. candida, especially in the last ageing period, where reproduction was the most sensitive biological parameter. The toxicity of both nanomaterials increased with ageing time, as shown by the decrease of the EC50 values over time. The influence of LDH dissolution and availability of Zn and Mg in the soil pore water was the main factor related to the toxicity, although we cannot rule out the influence of other structural constituents of LDHs (e.g., nitrates and aluminium). This study supports the importance of incorporating ageing in the ecotoxicity testing of nanomaterials, considering their slow release, as effects on soil organisms can change and lead to more severe impacts on the ecosystem functioning.

Impacts of nano-acetamiprid pesticide on faba bean root metabolic response and soil health

The associated benefits and potential environmental risks of nanopesticides on plant and soil health, particularly in comparison with traditional pesticides, have not been systematically elucidated. Herein, we investigated the impacts of the as-synthesized nano-acetamiprid (Nano-Ace, 20 nm) at low (10 mg/L), medium (50 mg/L), high (100 mg/L) doses and the corresponding high commercial acetamiprid (Ace, 100 mg/L) on the physiological and metabolic response of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) plants, as well as on rhizosphere bacterial communities and functions over short-, medium- and long-term exposures. Overall, Nano-Ace exposure contributed to basic metabolic pathways (e.g., flavonoids, amino acids, TCA cycle intermediate, etc.) in faba bean roots across the whole exposure period. Moreover, Nano-Ace exposure enriched rhizosphere beneficial bacteria (e.g., Streptomyces (420.7%), Pseudomonas (33.8%), Flavobacterium (23.3%)) and suppressed pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Acidovorax (44.5%)). Additionally, Nano-Ace exposure showed a trend of low promotion and high inhibition of soil enzyme activities (e.g., invertase, urease, arylsulfatase, alkaline phosphatase) involved in soil C, N, S, and P cycling, while the inhibition was generally weaker than that of conventional Ace. Altogether, this study indicated that the redox-responsive nano-acetamiprid pesticide possessed high safety for host plants and soil health.

Recent advances on environmental behavior of Cu-based nanomaterials in soil-plant system: A review

In recent years, copper-based nanomaterials (Cu-based NMs) have shown great potential in promoting agriculture development due to their special physicochemical characteristics. With the mass production and overuse of Cu-based NMs, there are potential effects on the soil-plant environment. Soil organisms, especially soil microorganisms, play a significant part in terrestrial or soil ecosystems; plants, as indirect organisms with soil-related Cu-based NMs, may affect human health through plant agricultural products. Understanding the accumulation and transformation of Cu-based NMs in soil-plant systems, as well as their ecotoxicological effects and potential mechanisms, is a prerequisite for the scientific assessment of environmental risks and safe application. Therefore, based on the current literature, this review: (i) introduces the accumulation and transformation behaviors of Cu-based NMs in soil and plant systems; (ii) focuses on the ecotoxicological effects of Cu-based NMs on a variety of organisms (microorganisms, invertebrates, and plants); (iii) reveals their corresponding toxicity mechanisms. It appears from studies hitherto made that both Cu-based NMs and released Cu2+ may be the main reasons for toxicity. When Cu-based NMs enter the soil-plant environment, their intrinsic physicochemical properties, along with various environmental factors, could also affect their transport, transformation, and biotoxicity. Therefore, we should push for intensifying the multi-approach research that focuses on the behaviors of Cu-based NMs in terrestrial exposure environments, and mitigates their toxicity to ensure the promotion of Cu-based NMs.

Responses of soil microbiome to copper-based materials (nano and bulk) for agricultural applications: An indoor-mesocosm experiment

The foreseen increasing application of copper-based nanomaterials (Cu-NMs), replacing or complementing existing Cu-agrochemicals, may negatively impact the soil microbiome. Thus, we studied the effects on soil microbiome function and composition of nano copper oxide (nCuO) or copper hydroxide NMs in a commercial (Kocide®3000) or a lab-synthetized formulation (nCu(OH)2) or bulk copper hydroxide (Cu(OH)2-B), at the commonly recommended Cu dose of 50 mg(Cu)kg-1 soil. Microbial responses were studied over 28 days in a designed indoor mesocosm. On day-28, in comparison to non-treated soil (CT), all Cu-treatments led to a reduction in dehydrogenase (95% to 68%), arylsulfatase (41% to 27%), and urease (40% to 20%) activity. There was a 32% increase in the utilization of carbon substrates in the nCuO-treatment and an increased abundance of viable bacteria in the nCu(OH)2-treatment (75% of heterotrophic and 69% of P-solubilizing bacteria). The relative abundance of Acidobacteria [Kocide®3000, nCuO, and Cu(OH)2-B treatments] and Flavobacteriia [nCu(OH)2-treatment] was negatively affected by Cu exposure. The abundance of Cu-tolerant bacteria increased in soils treated with Kocide®3000 (Clostridia) and nCu(OH)2 (Gemmatimonadetes). All Cu-treated soils exhibited a reduced abundance of denitrification-related genes (0.05% of nosZ gene). The DTPA-extractable pool of ionic Cu(II) varied among treatments: Cu(OH)2-B > Kocide®3000 ∼ nCuO>nCu(OH)2, which may explain changes on the soil microbiome composition, at the genera and OTU levels. Thus, our study revealed that Cu-materials (nano and bulk) influence the soil microbiome with implications on its ecological role. It highlights the importance of assessing the impact of Cu-materials under dynamic and complex exposure scenarios and emphasizes the need for specific regulatory frameworks for NMs.

Agroecological transition: towards a better understanding of the impact of ecology-based farming practices on soil microbial ecotoxicology

Alternative farming systems have developed since the beginning of industrial agriculture. Organic, biodynamic, conservation farming, agroecology and permaculture, all share a grounding in ecological concepts and a belief that farmers should work with nature rather than damage it. As ecology-based agricultures rely greatly on soil organisms to perform the functions necessary for agricultural production, it is thus important to evaluate the performance of these systems through the lens of soil organisms, especially soil microbes. They provide numerous services to plants, including growth promotion, nutrient supply, tolerance to environmental stresses and protection against pathogens. An overwhelming majority of studies confirm that ecology-based agricultures are beneficial for soil microorganisms. However, three practices were identified as posing potential ecotoxicological risks: the recycling of organic waste products, plastic mulching, and pest and disease management with biopesticides. The first two because they can be a source of contaminants; the third because of potential impacts on non-target microorganisms. Consequently, developing strategies to allow a safe recycling of the increasingly growing organic matter stocks produced in cities and factories, and the assessment of the ecotoxicological impact of biopesticides on non-target soil microorganisms, represent two challenges that ecology-based agricultural systems will have to face in the future.

Nanoparticle applications in agriculture: overview and response of plant-associated microorganisms

Globally, food security has become a critical concern due to the rise in human population and the current climate change crisis. Usage of conventional agrochemicals to maximize crop yields has resulted in the degradation of fertile soil, environmental pollution as well as human and agroecosystem health risks. Nanotechnology in agriculture is a fast-emerging and new area of research explored to improve crop productivity and nutrient-use efficiency using nano-sized agrochemicals at lower doses than conventional agrochemicals. Nanoparticles in agriculture are applied as nanofertilizers and/or nanopesticides. Positive results have been observed in terms of plant growth when using nano-based agricultural amendments. However, their continuous application may have adverse effects on plant-associated rhizospheric and endospheric microorganisms which often play a crucial role in plant growth, nutrient uptake, and disease prevention. While research shows that the application of nanoparticles has the potential to improve plant growth and yield, their effect on the diversity and function of plant-associated microorganisms remains under-explored. This review provides an overview of plant-associated microorganisms and their functions. Additionally, it highlights the response of plant-associated microorganisms to nanoparticle application and provides insight into areas of research required to promote sustainable and precision agricultural practices that incorporate nanofertilizers and nanopesticides.

Structural and Functional Shifts in the Microbial Community of a Heavy Metal-Contaminated Soil Exposed to Short-Term Changes in Air Temperature, Soil Moisture and UV Radiation

The interplay between metal contamination and climate change may exacerbate the negative impact on the soil microbiome and, consequently, on soil health and ecosystem services. We assessed the response of the microbial community of a heavy metal-contaminated soil when exposed to short-term (48 h) variations in air temperature, soil humidity or ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the absence and presence of Enchytraeus crypticus (soil invertebrate). Each of the climate scenarios simulated significantly altered at least one of the microbial parameters measured. Irrespective of the presence or absence of invertebrates, the effects were particularly marked upon exposure to increased air temperature and alterations in soil moisture levels (drought and flood scenarios). The observed effects can be partly explained by significant alterations in soil properties such as pH, dissolved organic carbon, and water-extractable heavy metals, which were observed for all scenarios in comparison to standard conditions. The occurrence of invertebrates mitigated some of the impacts observed on the soil microbial community, particularly in bacterial abundance, richness, diversity, and metabolic activity. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering the interplay between climate change, anthropogenic pressures, and soil biotic components to assess the impact of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems and to develop and implement effective management strategies.

Impact of nCuO containing treated wastewater on soil microbes and dissolved organic matter in paddy field leachate

Using treated wastewater (TWW) resources in agriculture is a major pathway for disseminating nanoparticles. Copper-oxide nanoparticles (nCuO) offer potential benefits, but their presence in the environment poses risks to agricultural and environmental sustainability. This study examined soil microbial transformations and the composition of leachate dissolved organic matter (DOM) of paddy soils irrigated with nCuO-contaminated TWW at different concentrations (T2: 0.02 mgL-1, T3: 0.2 mgL-1, T4: 2.0 mgL-1) and examined the differences in Cu source (T5: 0.2 mgL-1 CuSO4). Results showed negative impacts on the absolute microbial abundance with up to 46 % reduction relative to the control treatment (T1). Changes in relative abundance of specific microbes at the genus level deviated from the corresponding phyla. Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Verrucomicrobia phyla increased in the surface (0-3 cm) and subsurface (3-15 cm) layers responding differently to nCuO. In the 0-3 cm layer, Nitrospirae, Euryarchaeota, and Crenarchaeota increased, but only Dechloromonas genus from Proteobacteria increased with increasing nCuO. No significant variations were observed in the DOM composition, except in T4, which had a significantly low content of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total dissolved nitrogen, and terrestrial humic-like and protein-like components. Ninety-eight distinct genera were identified, of which 44%, including 15 bacteria and two archaea, varied between the surface and subsurface, among treatments, and significantly correlated with more DOM parameters in the subsurface. T4 had the highest microbial diversity in the 0-3 layer, and Cu treatments slightly increased the diversity index in the subsurface. Moreover, the effects differed by Cu source, with T3 showing 10 % more reduction in the subsurface and 17 % less reduction in the surface than T5. The variable microbial responses to nCuO and their strong correlations with DOM highlight the need to consider the potential consequences of low nCuO concentrations on biogeochemical cycles.

Response of microbial communities in the phyllosphere ecosystem of tobacco exposed to the broad-spectrum copper hydroxide

Copper hydroxide is a broad-spectrum copper fungicide, which is often used to control crop fungal and bacterial diseases. In addition to controlling targeted pathogens, copper hydroxide may also affect other non-targeted microorganisms in the phyllosphere ecosystem. At four time points (before spraying, and 5, 10 and 15 days after fungicide application), the response of diseased and healthy tobacco phyllosphere microorganisms to copper hydroxide stress was studied by using Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology, and Biolog tools. The results showed that the microbiome communities of the healthy group were more affected than the disease group, and the fungal community was more sensitive than the bacterial community. The most common genera in the disease group were Alternaria, Boeremia, Cladosporium, Pantoea, Ralstonia, Pseudomonas, and Sphingomonas; while in the healthy group, these were Alternaria, Cladosporium, Symmetrospora, Ralstonia, and Pantoea. After spraying, the alpha diversity of the fungal community decreased at 5 days for both healthy and diseased groups, and then showed an increasing trend, with a significant increase at 15 days for the healthy group. The alpha diversity of bacterial community in healthy and diseased groups increased at 15 days, and the healthy group had a significant difference. The relative abundance of Alternaria and Cladosporium decreased while that of Boeremia, Stagonosporopsis, Symmetrospora, Epicoccum and Phoma increased in the fungal communities of healthy and diseased leaves. The relative abundance of Pantoea decreased first and then increased, while that of Ralstonia, Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas increased first and then decreased in the bacterial communities of healthy and diseased leaves. While copper hydroxide reduced the relative abundance of pathogenic fungi Alternaria and Cladosporium, it also resulted in the decrease of beneficial bacteria such as Actinomycetes and Pantoea, and the increase of potential pathogens such as Boeremia and Stagonosporopsis. After treatment with copper hydroxide, the metabolic capacity of the diseased group improved, while that of the healthy group was significantly suppressed, with a gradual recovery of metabolic activity as the application time extended. The results revealed changes in microbial community composition and metabolic function of healthy and diseased tobacco under copper hydroxide stress, providing a theoretical basis for future studies on microecological protection of phyllosphere.

Nanopesticide risk assessment based on microbiome profiling - Community structure and functional potential as biomarkers in captan@ZnO35-45 nm and captan@SiO220-30 nm treated orchard soil

Nanoformulation should minimise the usage of pesticides and limit their environmental footprint. The risk assessment of two nanopesticides with fungicide captan as an active organic substance and ZnO35-45 nm or SiO220-30 nm as nanocarriers was evaluated using the non-target soil microorganisms as biomarkers. The first time for that kind of nanopesticides next-generation sequencing (NGS) of bacterial 16 S rRNA and fungal ITS region and metagenomics functional predictions (PICRUST2) was made to study structural and functional biodiversity. During a 100-day microcosm study in soil with pesticide application history, the effect of nanopesticides was compared to pure captan and both nanocarriers. Nanoagrochemicals affected microbial composition, especially Acidobacteria-6 class, and alpha diversity, but the observed effect was generally more substantial for pure captan. As for beta diversity, the negative impact was detected only in response to captan and still observed on day 100. Fungal community in the orchard soil showed only a decrease in phylogenetic diversity in captan set-up since day 30. PICRUST2 analysis confirmed several times lower impact of nanopesticides considering the abundance of functional pathways and genes encoding enzymes. Furthermore, the overall data indicated that using SiO220-30 nm as a nanocarrier speeds up a recovery process compared to ZnO35-45 nm.

Nanotechnology-based pesticides: Environmental fate and ecotoxicity

The imminent increase in global food demand inevitably leads to an increase in agricultural practices, with an emphasis on pesticide applications. Nanotechnology-based pesticides, or nanopesticides, have gained importance as they are more efficient and, in some cases, less toxic than their conventional counterparts. However, concerns about these novel products have arisen as evidence about their (eco)safety is controversial. This review aims to: (1) introduce the currently applied nanotechnology-based pesticides and their mechanisms of toxic action; (2) describe their fate when released into the environment, with an emphasis on aquatic environments; (3) summarize available research on ecotoxicological studies in freshwater non-target organisms through a bibliometric analysis; and (4) identify gaps in knowledge from an ecotoxicological perspective. Our results show that the environmental fate of nanopesticides is poorly studied and depends on both intrinsic and external factors. There is also a need for comparative research into their ecotoxicity between conventional pesticide formulations and their nano-based counterparts. Among the few available studies, most considered fish species as test organisms, compared to algae and invertebrates. Overall, these new materials generate toxic effects on non-target organisms and threaten the integrity of the environment. Therefore, deepening the understanding of their ecotoxicity is crucial.

Legacy effects of fumigation on soil bacterial and fungal communities and their response to metam sodium application

BACKGROUND

Soil microorganisms are integral to maintaining soil health and crop productivity, but fumigation used to suppress soilborne diseases may affect soil microbiota. Currently, little is known about the legacy effects of soil fumigation on soil microbial communities and their response to fumigation at the production scale. Here, 16S rRNA gene and internal transcribed spacer amplicon sequencing was used to characterize the bacterial and fungal communities in soils from intensively managed crop fields with and without previous exposure to metam sodium (MS) fumigation. The effect of fumigation history, soil series, and rotation crop diversity on microbial community variation was estimated and the response of the soil microbiome to MS application in an open microcosm system was documented.

RESULTS

We found that previous MS fumigation reduced soil bacterial diversity but did not affect microbial richness and fungal diversity. Fumigation history, soil series, and rotation crop diversity were the main contributors to the variation in microbial β-diversity. Between fumigated and non-fumigated soils, predominant bacterial and fungal taxa were similar; however, their relative abundance varied with fumigation history. In particular, the abundance of Basidiomycete yeasts was decreased in fumigated soils. MS fumigation also altered soil bacterial and fungal co-occurrence network structure and associations. In microcosms, application of MS reduced soil microbial richness and bacterial diversity. Soil microbial β-diversity was also affected but microbial communities of the microcosm soils were always similar to that of the field soils used to establish the microcosms. MS application also induced changes in relative abundance of several predominant bacterial and fungal genera based on a soil's previous fumigation exposure.

CONCLUSIONS

The legacy effects of MS fumigation are more pronounced on soil bacterial diversity, β-diversity and networks. Repeated fumigant applications shift soil microbial compositions and may contribute to differential MS sensitivity among soil microorganisms. Following MS application, microbial richness and bacterial diversity decreases, but microbial β-diversity was similar to that of the field soils used to establish the microcosms in the short-term (< 6 weeks). The responses of soil microbiome to MS fumigation are context dependent and rely on abiotic, biotic, and agricultural management practices.

Impact of nanoplastic debris on the stability and transport of metal oxide nanoparticles: role of varying soil solution chemistry

The release of metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) and nanoplastic debris (NPDs) has become ubiquitous in the natural ecosystem. Interaction between MNPs and NPDs may alter their fate and transport in the sub-surface environment and have not been addressed so far. Therefore, the present study has explored the role of NPDs on the stability and mobility of extensively used MNPs, i.e., CuO nanoparticles (NPs) under varying soil solutions (SS) chemistry. In the absence of NPDs, a very high aggregation of CuO NPs observed in SS extracted from black, lateritic, and red soils, which can be correlated with ionic strength (IS) and type of ionic species. The sedimentation rate (k_sed(1/h)) for CuO NPs was >0.5 h^-1 in the case of these SS. Interestingly, the stability and sedimentation behavior of CuO NPs varied significantly in the presence of NPDs. The k_sed for CuO NPs decreased to half and found <0.25 h^-1 in the presence of NPDs in all SS. C/C₀ values in breakthrough curves increased drastically (black < alluvial < laterite < red) in presence of NPDs. Results suggest that the release of NPDs in the terrestrial ecosystem is a potential threat leading to increased mobility of MNPs in the environment.

Pesticide soil microbial toxicity: setting the scene for a new pesticide risk assessment for soil microorganisms (IUPAC Technical Report)

Pesticides constitute an integral part of modern agriculture. However, there are still concerns about their effects on non-target organisms. To address this the European Commission has imposed a stringent regulatory scheme for new pesticide compounds. Assessment of the aquatic toxicity of pesticides is based on a range of advanced tests. This does not apply to terrestrial ecosystems, where the toxicity of pesticides on soil microorganisms, is based on an outdated and crude test (N mineralization). This regulatory gap is reinforced by the recent methodological and standardization advances in soil microbial ecology. The inclusion of such standardized tools in a revised risk assessment scheme will enable the accurate estimation of the toxicity of pesticides on soil microorganisms and on associated ecosystem services. In this review we (i) summarize recent work in the assessment of the soil microbial toxicity of pesticides and point to ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as most relevant bioindicator groups (ii) identify limitations in the experimental approaches used and propose mitigation solutions, (iii) identify scientific gaps and (iv) propose a new risk assessment procedure to assess the effects of pesticides on soil microorganisms.

Clay Types Modulate the Toxicity of Low Concentrated Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Toward Springtails in Artificial Test Soils

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) can be applied as an efficient alternative to conventional Cu in agriculture. Negative effects of CuO-NPs on soil organisms were found, but only in clay-rich loamy soils. It is hypothesized that clay-NP interactions are the origin of the observed toxic effects. In the present study, artificial Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development soils containing 30% of kaolin or montmorillonite as clay type were spiked with 1-32 mg Cu/kg of uncoated CuO-NPs or CuCl₂ . We performed 28-day reproduction tests with springtails of the species Folsomia candida and recorded the survival, reproduction, dry weight, and Cu content of adults. In a second experiment, molting frequency and the Cu content of exuviae, as well as the biochemical endpoints metallothionein and catalase (CAT) in springtails, were investigated. In the reproduction assay, negative effects on all endpoints were observed, but only in soils containing montmorillonite and mostly for CuO-NPs. For the biochemical endpoints and Cu content of exuviae, effects were clearly distinct between Cu forms in montmorillonite soil, but a significant reduction compared to the control was only found for CAT activity. Therefore, the reduced CAT activity in CuO-NP-montmorillonite soil might be responsible for the observed toxicity, potentially resulting from reactive oxygen species formation overloading the antioxidant system. This process seems to be highly concentration-dependent, because all endpoints investigated in reproduction and biochemical assays of CuO-NP-montmorillonite treatments showed a nonlinear dose-response relationship and were constantly reduced by approximately 40% at a field-realistic concentration of 3 mg/kg, but not at 32 mg/kg. The results underline that clay-CuO-NP interactions are crucial for their toxic behavior, especially at low, field-realistic concentrations, which should be considered for risk assessment of CuO-NPs. Novel Biopesticides Based on Nanoencapsulation of Azadirachtin with Whey Protein to Control Fall Armyworm

Biopesticides have become a global trend in order to minimize the hazards derived from synthetic chemical pesticides and improve the safety, efficacy, and environmental friendliness of agricultural pest management. Herein, we report a novel biopesticide composite encapsulating azadirachtin with the size of 260.9 ± 6.8 nm and its effects on the insect pest Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm). The nanocomposite biopesticide was produced via nano emulsification and freeze-drying process using whey protein isolate as a nanocarrier matrix to encapsulate azadirachtin, a natural insect-killing compound obtained from neem seed. We found that the nanocomposite biopesticide acted quicker and with greater efficacy than bulk azadirachtin treatment with corresponding LC₅₀ values within 11 days of S. frugiperda larvae survival. Through confocal microscopy, we found the enhanced biodistribution of the nanocomposite to all parts of the insect body. Photodegradation assays revealed an enhanced UV stability facilitated by light-scattering stemming from the intrinsic nanostructure and UV scavenging vitamin-E component.

Plant development and crop protection using phytonanotechnology: A new window for sustainable agriculture

Most developing nations' economies are built on agriculture and most of their citizens rely on it for survival. Global agricultural systems are experiencing tough and unprecedented challenges in the age of changing climate. Every year, the world's population grows, necessitating increased agrarian productivity. As a result, there has been a movement toward utilizing emerging technologies, such as nanotechnology. Nanotechnology with plant systems has inspired great interest in the current scenario in developing areas that come under the umbrella of agriculture and develop environmental remediation strategies. Plant-mediated synthesized nanoparticle (NPs) are eco-friendly, less time consuming, less expensive, and provide long-term product safety. Simultaneously, it provides tools that have the potentiality as "magic bullets" containing nutrients, fungicides, fertilizers, herbicides, or nucleic acids that target specific plant tissues and deliver their payload to the targeting location of the plant to achieve the intended results for environmental monitoring and pollution resistance. In this perspective, the classification and biological activities of different NPs on agroecosystem are focused. Furthermore, absorption, transport, and modification of NPs in plants were thoroughly examined. Some of the most promising new technologies e.g., nanotechnology to increase crop agricultural input efficiency and reduce biotic and abiotic stresses are also discussed. Potential development and implementation challenges were explored, highlighting the importance of using a systems approach when creating suggested nanotechnologies.

Short-Term Responses of Soil Microbial Communities to Changes in Air Temperature, Soil Moisture and UV Radiation

We analyzed the effects on a soil microbial community of short-term alterations in air temperature, soil moisture and ultraviolet radiation and assessed the role of invertebrates (species Enchytraeus crypticus) in modulating the community’s response to these factors. The reference soil, Lufa 2.2, was incubated for 48 h, with and without invertebrates, under the following conditions: standard (20 °C + 50% water holding capacity (WHC)); increased air temperature (15–25 °C or 20–30 °C + 50% WHC); flood (20 °C + 75% WHC); drought (20 °C + 25% WHC); and ultraviolet radiation (UV) (20 °C + 50% WHC + UV). BIOLOG EcoPlates and 16S rDNA sequencing (Illumina) were used to assess the microbial community’s physiological profile and the bacterial community’s structure, respectively. The bacterial abundance (estimated by 16S rDNA qPCR) did not change. Most of the conditions led to an increase in microbial activity and a decrease in diversity. The structure of the bacterial community was particularly affected by higher air temperatures (20–30 °C, without E. crypticus) and floods (with E. crypticus). Effects were observed at the class, genera and OTU levels. The presence of invertebrates mostly resulted in the attenuation of the observed effects, highlighting the importance of considering microbiome–invertebrate interactions. Considering future climate changes, the effects described here raise concern. This study provides fundamental knowledge to develop effective strategies to mitigate these negative outcomes. However, long-term studies integrating biotic and abiotic factors are needed.

Nano-enabled agrochemicals/materials: Potential human health impact, risk assessment, management strategies and future prospects

Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing technology that will have a significant impact on product development in the next few years. The technology is already being employed in cutting-edge cosmetic and healthcare products. Nanotechnology and nanoparticles have a strong potential for product and process innovation in the food industrial sector. This is already being demonstrated by food product availability made using nanotechnology. Nanotechnologies will have an impact on food security, packaging materials, delivery systems, bioavailability, and new disease detection materials in the food production chain, contributing to the UN Millennium Development Goals targets. Food products using nanoparticles are already gaining traction into the market, with an emphasis on online sales. This means that pre- and post-marketing regulatory frameworks and risk assessments must meet certain standards. There are potential advantages of nanotechnologies for agriculture, consumers and the food industry at large as they are with other new and growing technologies. However, little is understood about the safety implications of applying nanotechnologies to agriculture and incorporating nanoparticles into food. As a result, policymakers and scientists must move quickly, as regulatory systems appear to require change, and scientists should contribute to these adaptations. Their combined efforts should make it easier to reduce health and environmental impacts while also promoting the economic growth of nanotechnologies in the food supply chain. This review highlighted the benefits of a number of nano enabled agrochemicals/materials, the potential health impacts as well as the risk assessment and risk management for nanoparticles in the agriculture and food production chain.

Terrestrial organisms react differently to nano and non-nano Cu(OH)2 forms

The application of nanomaterials in agriculture is deemed as a promising strategy to increase the sector's sustainability. Nanopesticides are expected to improve solutions for pest/disease management, while reducing adverse effects to ecosystems, in accordance with the European Green Deal strategy. Hitherto, nanopesticide research has mostly focused on assessing effects to target species or crops, and less attention has been devoted to non-target soil species. In this study, we explored whether three copper hydroxide-based forms (nano and non-nano) show different toxicity and accumulation patterns in two terrestrial invertebrates, the isopod Porcellionides pruinosus and the mealworm larvae Tenebrio molitor. Toxicity and bioaccumulation experiments were performed and time-course toxicity and toxicokinetics analyzed and modelled. We found important differences in copper sensitivity and accumulation: T. molitor was more resistant and able to eliminate copper compared to P. pruinosus. The nanopesticide mostly elicited lower effects for both species. Slower toxicokinetics by the nanopesticide and lower bioaccumulative potential to P. pruinosus must be partially responsible for the differences in toxicity. Although no toxicokinetics differences were found in T. molitor between Cu forms, distinct negative effects on growth must reflect different energetic costs for copper regulation. Even though effects on toxicity and bioaccumulation are species-specific, copper hydroxide-based nanopesticides may cause less adverse effects to soil organisms than conventional products, being a good solution for reducing the environmental impact. Copper hydroxide nanosheets-assembled nanofibrous membranes for anti-biofouling water disinfection

Copper hydroxide (Cu(OH)₂) has been elected as a newly-emerging green disinfectant to deal with membrane biofouling in the treatment of bacteria-contaminated water; however, the decoration strategy of it with the granular form on membrane substrates limits the practical application. Here a novel surface-confined methodology was proposed for preparing freestanding Cu(OH)₂ nanosheet-assembled nanofibrous membranes (CNNMs) with the anti-biofouling property via the in-suit coprecipitation and heat-induced growth method. The vertically aligned Cu(OH)₂ nanosheets were in-suit rooted on the surface of the nanofiber scaffold with high binding fastness. The acquired CNNMs possess comprehensive performances of high porosity, prominent mechanical strength, fatigue resistance, and superior bactericidal efficiency of 99.999%, which endowed the CNNMs ultrahigh filtration fluxes (24000 L m^-2 h^-1) and durability to disinfect bacteria-containing water effectively. This facile strategy may throw light on manufacturing novel inorganic nanosheet-rooted nanofibrous membranes for water disinfection and public health.

Response of soil enzyme activity and bacterial community to copper hydroxide nanofertilizer and its ionic analogue under single versus repeated applications

Nanosized agrochemicals like nanofertilizers are being applied to soils. Adverse impacts of nanofertilizers on soil microflora were reported in past studies, but only considering a single application. Repeated applications are however more likely to occur in agriculture. We investigated effects of single versus repeated applications of a copper hydroxide nanofertilizer formulation (NFF) on soil enzyme activity and bacterial community. One or three applications were performed within 21 days to achieve same final level of Cu in soil (48 mg(Cu)/kg: the recommended dose of NFF). Besides, the active ingredient (i.e., copper hydroxide nanotubes (NT)) and dispersing agent (DA) of NFF, and an ionic fertilizer (i.e., CuSO₄) were examined. Fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDAse), N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), and urease (URE) showed negligible changes in the activities between the control and DA treatment. Bacterial community abundance, composition and diversity exhibited similar phenomena. Exposures to copper hydroxide NFF and NT or CuSO₄ enhanced the activities of FDAse and NAG, weakened the activity of URE, and showed negligible changes in the LAP activity irrespective of single and repeated applications. Concentrations of NO₃^--N and NH₄⁺-N in soil were also affected by the application mode of NFF. More importantly, responses of soil bacterial community to copper hydroxide NFF were highly dependent on its application mode, whereas similar responses were observed in the CuSO₄ treatment regardless of single or repeated applications. This study provided new insights into environmental risk of copper hydroxide NFF that were ignored in previous studies using a single exposure.

Nano-Enable Materials Promoting Sustainability and Resilience in Modern Agriculture

Intensive conventional agriculture and climate change have induced severe ecological damages and threatened global food security, claiming a reorientation of agricultural management and public policies towards a more sustainable development model. In this context, nanomaterials promise to support this transition by promoting mitigation, enhancing productivity, and reducing contamination. This review gathers recent research innovations on smart nanoformulations and delivery systems improving crop protection and plant nutrition, nanoremediation strategies for contaminated soils, nanosensors for plant health and food quality and safety monitoring, and nanomaterials as smart food-packaging. It also highlights the impact of engineered nanomaterials on soil microbial communities, and potential environmental risks, along with future research directions. Although large-scale production and in-field testing of nano-agrochemicals are still ongoing, the collected information indicates improvements in uptake, use efficiency, targeted delivery of the active ingredients, and reduction of leaching and pollution. Nanoremediation seems to have a low negative impact on microbial communities while promoting biodiversity. Nanosensors enable high-resolution crop monitoring and sustainable management of the resources, while nano-packaging confers catalytic, antimicrobial, and barrier properties, preserving food safety and preventing food waste. Though, the application of nanomaterials to the agri-food sector requires a specific risk assessment supporting proper regulations and public acceptance.
