A critical review of ferrate(VI)-based remediation of soil and groundwater

Effect of magnetized water irrigation on Cd subcellular allocation and chemical forms in leaves of Festuca arundinacea during phytoremediation

The application of an external magnetic field has been shown to improve the Cd phytoremediation efficiency of F. arundinacea by leaf harvesting. However, the influencing mechanisms of the promoting effect have not yet been revealed. This study evaluated variations in the Cd subcellular allocation and fractions in various F. arundinacea leaves, with or without magnetized water irrigation. Over 50 % of the metal were sequestered within the cell wall in all tissues under all treatments, indicating that cell wall binding was a critical detoxification pathway for Cd. After magnetized water treatment, the metal stored in the cytoplasm of roots raised from 33.1 % to 45.3 %, and the quantity of soluble Cd in plant roots enhanced from 53.4 % to 59.0 %. The findings suggested that magnetized water mobilized Cd in the roots, and thus drove it into the leaves. In addition, the proportion of Cd in the organelles, and the concentration of ethanol-extracted Cd in emerging leaves, decreased by 13.0 % and 47.1 %, respectively, after magnetized water treatment. These results explained why an external field improved the phytoextraction effect of the plant through leaf harvesting.

Enhanced dewaterability of food waste digestate by biochar/potassium ferrate treatments: Performance and mechanisms

The combined process of biochar (BC) and potassium ferrate (PF) offers a fascinating technique for efficient dewatering of digestate. However, the effects of BC/PF treatment on the dewaterability and mechanisms of FWD are still unknown. This study aimed to reveal the impact mechanisms of BC/PF treatment on digestate dewatering performance. Experimental results indicated that BC/PF treatment significantly enhanced the dewaterability of digestate, with the minimum specific resistance to filtration of (1.05 ± 0.02) × 1015 m·kg-1 and water content of 57.52 ± 0.51% being obtained at the concentrations of 0.018 g·g-1 total solid (TS) BC300 and 0.20 g·g-1 TS PF, which were 8.60% and 13.59% lower than PF treatment, respectively. BC/PF treatment proficiently reduced the fractal dimension, bound water content, apparent viscosity, and gel-like network structure strength of digestate, as well as increased the floc size and zeta potential of digestate. BC/PF treatment promoted the conversion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) fractions from inner EPS to soluble EPS, increased the fluorescence intensity of the dissolved compounds, and enhanced the hydrophobicity of proteins. Mechanisms investigations showed that BC/PF enhanced dewatering through non-reactive oxygen species pathways, i.e., via strong oxidative intermediate irons species Fe(V)/Fe(IV). BC/PF treatment enhanced the solubilization of nutrients, the inactivation of fecal coliforms, and the mitigation of heavy metal toxicity. The results suggested that BC/PF treatment is an effective digestate dewatering technology which can provide technological supports to the closed-loop treatment of FWD.

A two-stage Fe(VI) oxidation process enhances the removal of bisphenol A for potential application

Ferrate (Fe(VI)) has been extensively studied as a green oxidant to treat wastewater. But Fe(VI) oxidation still faces several challenges for application, such as the sensitivity of Fe(VI) to pH and the restrictions on the Fe(VI) utilization efficiency for pollutant elimination at low concentration levels. This study proposed a two-stage Fe(VI) oxidation process to enhance the bisphenol A (BPA) removal for potential applicability, consisting of the adsorption by CNTs of stage I and the degradation by Fe(VI) of stage II. The Fe(VI) utilization efficiency in the two-stage process (0.848) was higher than that in one-stage processes (0.727) and Fe(VI) alone system (0.504) at pH 9. In stage I, the adsorption process had good compliance with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In stage II, the effective utilization of low-concentration Fe(VI) was 2.45 times more than Fe(VI) alone, and the reduction of reaction volume was beneficial to further enhance utilization. The probe experiments (sulfoxide) and the degradation experiments of other electron-donating/withdrawing pollutants (e.g., atrazine, benzoic acid) demonstrated that Fe(IV) and Fe(V) were major oxidizing species in the two-stage process. The regeneration experiments showed that CNTs still had acceptable adsorption and catalytic capabilities after five cycles. Finally, the intermediate products in the two-stage process were detected and four possible degradation pathways of BPA were proposed. These findings were meaningful for the practical application of Fe(VI) oxidation to overcome the conditional limitation and improve the utilization.

Degradation of Butylated Hydroxyanisole by the Combined Use of Peroxymonosulfate and Ferrate(VI): Reaction Kinetics, Mechanism and Toxicity Evaluation

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), a synthetic phenolic antioxidant (SPA), is now widely present in natural waters. To improve the degradation efficiency of BHA and reduce product toxicity, a combination of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and Ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) was used in this study. We systematically investigated the reaction kinetics, mechanism and product toxicity in the degradation of BHA through the combined use of PMS and Fe(VI). The results showed that PMS and Fe(VI) have synergistic effects on the degradation of BHA. The effects of operational factors, including PMS dosage, pH and coexisting ions (Cl-, SO42-, HCO3-, K+, NH4+ and Mg2+), and different water matrices were investigated through a series of kinetic experiments. When T = 25 °C, the initial pH was 8.0, the initial BHA concentration was 100 μM, the initial concentration ratio of [PMS]0:[Fe(VI)]0:[BHA]0 was 100:1:1 and the degradation rate could reach 92.4% within 30 min. Through liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS) identification, it was determined that the oxidation pathway of BHA caused by PMS/Fe(VI) mainly includes hydroxylation, ring-opening and coupling reactions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that •OH was most likely to attack BHA and generate hydroxylated products. The comprehensive comparison of product toxicity results showed that the PMS/Fe(VI) system can effectively reduce the environmental risk of a reaction. This study contributes to the development of PMS/Fe(VI) for water treatment applications.

Nanoparticles modulate heavy-metal and arsenic stress in food crops: Hormesis for food security/safety and public health

Heavy metal and arsenic (HM-As) contamination at the soil-food crop interface is a threat to food security/safety and public health worldwide. The potential ecotoxicological effects of HM-As on food crops can perturb normal physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes. To protect food safety and human health, nanoparticles (NPs) can be applied to seed priming and soil amendment, as 'manifestation of hormesis' to modulate HM-As-induced oxidative stress in edible crops. This review provides a comprehensive overview of NPs-mediated alleviation of HM-As stress in food crops and resulting hormetic effects. The underlying biochemical and molecular mechanisms in the amelioration of HM-As-induced oxidative stress is delineated by covering the various aspects of the interaction of NPs (e.g., magnetic particles, silicon, metal oxides, selenium, and carbon nanotubes) with plant microbes, phytohormone, signaling molecules, and plant-growth bioregulators (e.g., salicylic acid and melatonin). With biotechnical advances (such as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) gene editing and omics), the efficacy of NPs and associated hormesis has been augmented to produce "pollution-safe designer cultivars" in HM-As-stressed agriculture systems. Future research into nanoscale technological innovations should thus be directed toward achieving food security, sustainable development goals, and human well-being, with the aid of HM-As stress resilient food crops.

Enhancing Ferrate Oxidation of Micropollutants via Inducing Fe(V)/Fe(IV) Formation Needs Caution: Increased Conversion of Bromide to Bromate

This study explores the formation of bromate (BrO3-) in the copresence of Fe(VI) and bromide (Br-). It challenges previous beliefs about the role of Fe(VI) as a green oxidant and highlights the crucial role of intermediates Fe(V) and Fe(IV) in the conversion of Br- to BrO3-. The results show that the maximum concentration of BrO3- of 48.3 μg/L was obtained at 16 mg/L Br- and that the contribution of Fe(V)/Fe(IV) to the conversion was positively related to pH. The study suggests that a single-electron transfer from Br- to Fe(V)/Fe(IV) along with the generation of reactive bromine radicals is the first step of Br- conversion, followed by the formation of OBr- which was then oxidized to BrO3- by Fe(VI) and Fe(V)/Fe(IV). Some common background water constituents (e.g., DOM, HCO3-, and Cl-) significantly inhibited BrO3- formation by consuming Fe(V)/Fe(IV) and/or scavenging the reactive bromine species. While investigations proposing to promote Fe(V)/Fe(IV) formation in Fe(VI)-based oxidation to enhance its oxidation capacity have been rapidly accumulated recently, this work called attention to the considerable formation of BrO3- in this process.

Effective stabilization of electrochemically prepared ecological oxidizing agent-ferrate(VI)-by encapsulation in zeolite and its application to water containing SARS-CoV-2 virus

Improper and insufficient treatment of infectious hospital wastewater could seriously endanger public health and the environment. Ferrate(VI), a strong oxidizing, disinfecting, and coagulating agent, has the potential as a green solution for decontamination of water and wastewater. In this paper, electrochemically prepared potassium ferrate (K2 FeO4 ) with high purity was successfully encapsulated and applied to the water contaminated by SARS-CoV-2. Natural zeolite was chosen as an appropriate ecological material for ferrate encapsulation. The stability of encapsulated ferrate (in tablet form) was monitored for an extended time period (290 days) and has significantly increased in contrast with free potassium ferrate by almost 30%. Subsequently, the K2 FeO4 encapsulated with zeolite in tablet form was applied to the water and municipal water samples containing the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The removal efficiency reached up to 98.5% and 86.7%, respectively, under natural conditions. Combination of environmentally friendly oxidizing agent and natural excellent adsorbent leads to the creation of very effective water treatment matter. These findings are essentially immediate and especially important for immediate water treatment in urgent situations such as natural disasters or military conflict. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Electrochemical preparation of oxidizing agent, K2 FeO4 , in high purity by own constructed electrolyzer. Encapsulation of ferrate(VI) to natural zeolite threefold improving the stability during 9 months. SARS-CoV-2 virus was successfully removed from various contaminated types of water. High degradation efficiency of virus fragments by Fe(VI) was achieved without additional water adjustment, in natural pH range.

Heavy metals in vegetables: a review of status, human health concerns, and management options

For sustainable global growth, food security is a prime concern issue, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Adverse effects on crop quality from contaminants like heavy metals have affected food security and human health. Vegetables comprise the essential and nutritious part of the human diet as they contain a lot of health-promoting minerals and vitamins. However, the inadvertent excess accumulation of heavy metals (As, Cd, Hg, and Pb) in vegetables and their subsequent intake by humans may affect their physiology and metabolomics and has been associated with diseases like cancer, mental retardation, and immunosuppression. Many known sources of hazardous metals are volcano eruptions, soil erosion, use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture, the use of pesticides and herbicides, and irrigation with wastewater, industrial effluents, etc. that contaminate the vegetables through the soil, air and water. In this review, the problem of heavy metal contamination in vegetables is discussed along with the prospective management strategies like soil amendments, application of bioadsorbents, membrane filtration, bioremediation, and nanoremediation.

Heavy metals and arsenic stress in food crops: Elucidating antioxidative defense mechanisms in hyperaccumulators for food security, agricultural sustainability, and human health

The spread of heavy metal(loid)s at soil-food crop interfaces has become a threat to sustainable agricultural productivity, food security, and human health. The eco-toxic effects of heavy metals on food crops can be manifested through reactive oxygen species that have the potential to disturb seed germination, normal growth, photosynthesis, cellular metabolism, and homeostasis. This review provides a critical overview of stress tolerance mechanisms in food crops/hyperaccumulator plants against heavy metals and arsenic (HM-As). The HM-As antioxidative stress tolerance in food crops is associated with changes in metabolomics (physico-biochemical/lipidomics) and genomics (molecular level). Furthermore, HM-As stress tolerance can occur through plant-microbe, phytohormone, antioxidant, and signal molecule interactions. Information regarding the avoidance, tolerance, and stress resilience of HM-As should help pave the way to minimize food chain contamination, eco-toxicity, and health risks. Advanced biotechnological approaches (e.g., genome modification with CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing) in concert with traditional sustainable biological methods are useful options to develop 'pollution safe designer cultivars' with increased climate change resilience and public health risks mitigation. Further, the usage of HM-As tolerant hyperaccumulator biomass in biorefineries (e.g., environmental remediation, value added chemicals, and bioenergy) is advocated to realize the synergy between biotechnological research and socio-economic policy frameworks, which are inextricably linked with environmental sustainability. The biotechnological innovations, if directed toward 'cleaner climate smart phytotechnologies' and 'HM-As stress resilient food crops', should help open the new path to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) and a circular bioeconomy.

Remediation of groundwater contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) using a long-lasting persulfate/biochar barrier

Groundwater contamination by chlorinated solvents causes potential threats to water resources and human health. Therefore, it is important to develop effective technologies to remediate contaminated groundwater. This study uses biodegradable hydrophilic polymers, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as binders to manufacture persulfate (PS) tablets for the sustained release of persulfate to treat trichloroethylene (TCE) in groundwater. The release time for different tablets decreases in the order: HPMC (8-15 days) > HEC (7-8 days) > PVP (2-5 days). The efficiency with which persulfate is released is: HPMC (73-79%) > HEC (60-72%) > PVP (12-31%). HPMC is the optimal binder for the manufacture of persulfate tablets and persulfate is released from a tablet of HPMC/PS ratio (wt/wt) of 4/3 for 15 days at a release rate of 1127 mg/day. HPMC/PS/biochar (BC) ratios (wt/wt/wt) between 1/1/0.02 and 1/1/0.0333 are suitable for PS/BC tablets. PS/BC tablets release persulfate for 9-11 days at release rates of 1243 to 1073 mg/day. The addition of too much biochar weakens the structure of the tablets, which results in a rapid release of persulfate. TCE is oxidized by a PS tablet with an efficiency of 85% and a PS/BC tablet eliminates more TCE, with a removal efficiency of 100%, due to oxidation and adsorption during the 15 days of reaction. Oxidation is the predominant mechanism for TCE elimination by a PS/BC tablet. The adsorption of TCE by BC fits well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the pseudo-first-order kinetics, which describes the removal of TCE by PS and PS/BC tablets. The results of this study show that a PS/BC tablet can be used in a permeable reactive barrier for long-term passive remediation of groundwater.

Attenuating effects of selenium and zinc against hexavalent chromium-induced oxidative stress, hormonal instability, and placenta damage in preimplanted rats

As a toxic metal, hexavalent chromium (CrVI) has effects on both the reproductive and endocrine systems. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effects of selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) against the toxicity of chromium on the placenta in pregnant Wistar albino rats. Thirty pregnant Wistar rats were divided into control and four treated groups, receiving subcutaneously (s.c) on the 3rd day of pregnancy, K₂Cr₂O₇ (10 mg/kg body weight (bw)) alone, or in association with Se (0.3 mg/kg bw), ZnCl₂ (20 mg/kg bw), or both of them simultaneously. Plasma steroid hormones, placenta histoarchitecture, oxidative stress profile, and developmental parameters were investigated. These results showed that K₂Cr₂O₇ exposure induced a significant increase in the levels of both plasma estradiol (E₂) and placenta malondialdehyde (MDA), the number of fetal resorptions, and percent of post-implantation loss. On the other hand, K₂Cr₂O₇ significantly reduced developmental parameters, maternal body and placenta weight, and plasma progesterone (P) and chorionic gonadotropin hormone (β HCG) levels. However, K₂Cr₂O₇ significantly decreased the placenta activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH), and nonprotein sulfhydryl (NPSH). These changes have been reinforced by histopathological evaluation of the placenta. Se and/or ZnCl₂ supplementation provoked a significant improvement in most indices. These results suggest that the co-treatment with Se or ZnCl₂ strongly opposes the placenta cytotoxicity induced by K₂Cr₂O₇ through its antioxidant action.

Ferrate pretreatment-anaerobic fermentation enhances medium-chain fatty acids production from waste activated sludge: Performance and mechanisms

The rupture of cytoderm and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and competitive inhibition of methanogens are the main bottlenecks for medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production from waste activated sludge (WAS). This study proposes a promising ferrate (Fe (VI))-based technique to enhance MCFAs production from WAS through accelerating WAS disintegration and substrates transformation, and eliminating competitive inhibition of methanogens, simultaneously. Results shows that the maximal MCFAs production attains 8106.3 mg COD/L under 85 mg Fe/g TSS, being 58.6 times that of without Fe (VI) pretreatment. Mechanism exploration reveals that Fe (VI) effectively destroys EPS and cytoderm through electron transfer, reactive oxygen species generation (i.e., OH, O₂^- and ¹O₂) and elevated alkalinity, resulting in the transfer of organics from solid to soluble phase and from macromolecules to intermediates. Generation and transformation of intermediates analyses illustrate that Fe (VI) facilitates hydrolysis, acidification and chain elongation (CE) but suppresses methanogenesis, promoting the targeted conversion of intermediates to MCFAs. Also, Fe (VI) pretreatment provides potential electron shuttles for chain elongation. Microbial community and functional genes encoding key enzymes analysis indicates that Fe (VI) screens key microorganisms and up-regulates functional genes expression involved in CE pathways. Overall, this technology avoids methanogens inhibitor addition and stimulates vivianite synthesis during MCFAs production from WAS.

Moderate potassium ferrate dosage enhances methane production from the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

The annual increase of waste activated sludge (WAS) has become an urgent problem to be solved in sewage plants worldwide. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of WAS is an attractive choice to maximize the resource utilization rate. Nevertheless, the disintegration of sludge complex polymers is difficult, resulting in a low bioconversion rate. Potassium ferrate (PF), as a green oxidant with strong oxidizing property, has attracted great attention in WAS pretreatment recently. The effects of PF pretreatment on WAS hydrolysis and its dosage-response on methane production were investigated in the present study. Results show that as PF dosage raise from 0 to 50 g-K2FeO4/ kg-TS (total solids), the methane yield enhanced significantly by 40.3% from 0.083 to 0.12 L/g-VSadded (volatile solids). Nevertheless, the further increase in PF dosage resulted in decreased methane production. Especially with the PF dosage of 500 g-K2FeO4/ kg-TS, methane production is even slightly lower than the control reactor without PF oxidation. The mechanism analysis showed that although the dissolution of polysaccharides and proteins was enhanced with the high dosage of PF, the accompanying released humic-like substances and high concentration of ferric ions should be the main reasons inhibiting methane production.

Enhancing ultrafiltration of algal-rich water using ferrate activated with sodium percarbonate: Foulants variation, membrane fouling alleviation, and collaborative mechanism

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a reliable method to treat algal-rich water, whereas severe membrane fouling has impeded its actual application. To improve UF performance and alleviate membrane fouling resulted by algal foulants, a novel strategy coupling ferrate (Fe(VI)) and sodium percarbonate (SPC) was proposed. During the coupling process, Fe(VI) was activated by SPC to generate high-valent Fe intermediates (Fe(V) and Fe(IV)), which played a crucial role in high-efficiency oxidation for algal foulants, and the in-situ formed Fe(III) particles decomposed by Fe(VI) also enhanced the coagulation and adsorption capacity to the coupling system. Under the triple effects of coagulation, adsorption and oxidation, the algal foulants were efficiently eliminated. The zeta potential increased from -32.70 mV to -6.56 mV at most, the particle size was significantly enlarged, and the generated flocs possessed a great settleability. The morphology, viability, and integrity of algae cells were effectively maintained. The dissolved organic matters and fluorescent organics were efficiently removed, as well as macromolecular organics were reduced into lower molecular weight components. With the collaborative effect of Fe(VI) and SPC, the terminal specific flux was increased from 0.29 to 0.92, and the reversible and irreversible fouling resistances were reduced by 98.5% and 69.4%, individually. The surface functional groups were changed, and the dominant mechanisms were also converted to pore blocking from cake layer filtration. Overall, the experimental results would provide some new thoughts in actual production for algal-rich water treatment and UF membrane fouling alleviation.

Biosynthesis and Analytical Characterization of Iron Oxide Nanobiocomposite for In-Depth Adsorption Strategy for the Removal of Toxic Metals from Drinking Water

The biosynthesis of the iron oxide nanoparticles was done using Ixoro coccinea leaf extract, followed by the fabrication of iron oxide nanobiocomposites (I-Fe3O4-NBC) using chitosan biopolymer. Furthermore, the synthesized I-Fe3O4-NPs and I-Fe3O4-NBC were characterized, and I-Fe3O4-NBC was applied to remove toxic metals (TMs: Cd, Ni, and Pb) from water. The characterization study confirmed that the nanostructure, porous, rough, crystalline structure, and different functional groups of chitosan and I-Fe3O4-NPs in I-Fe3O4-NBCs showed their feasibility for the application as excellent adsorbents for quantitative removal of TMs. The batch mode strategy as feasibility testing was done to optimize different adsorption parameters (pH, concentrations of TMs, dose of I-Fe3O4-NBC, contact time, and temperature) for maximum removal of TMs from water by Fe3O4-NBC. The maximum adsorption capacities using nanocomposites for Cd, Ni, and Pb were 66.0, 60.0, and 66.4 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption process follows the Freundlich isotherm model by I-Fe3O4-NBC to remove Cd and Ni, while the Pb may be adsorption followed by multilayer surface coverage. The proposed adsorption process was best fitted to follow pseudo-second-order kinetics and showed an exothermic, favorable, and spontaneous nature. In addition, the I-Fe3O4-NBC was applied to adsorption TMs from surface water (%recovery > 95%). Thus, it can be concluded that the proposed nanocomposite is most efficient in removing TMs from drinking water up to recommended permissible limit.

Efficient chlorinated alkanes degradation in soil by combining alkali hydrolysis with thermally activated persulfate

Alkali activation is the most commonly used activation method for persulfate (PS) in in-situ remediation. However, the role of alkali in pollutant degradation is still elusive, limiting the optimization of relevant remediation strategies. In this study, we found that chlorinated alkanes (e.g., tetrachloroethane (TeCA)) could be efficiently degraded by thermal-alkali activation of PS. The main role of alkali was not activating PS but hydrolyzing the chlorinated alkanes, which was evidenced by the immediate conversion of TeCA into trichloroethylene (TCE) with NaOH and PS or with sole NaOH solution. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis also showed that with a high NaOH/PS molar ratio (4:1) the intensity of oxidative radicals decreased, implying that high levels of alkali did not favor the formation of free radicals. Interestingly, better degradation of TeCA and its product TCE was observed by the combination of alkaline hydrolysis and thermal activation of PS (where alkali was added 6 h before PS rather than simultaneously) in comparison to thermal-alkali activation of PS. This study provides new insights into the remediation of chlorinated alkane-contaminated soils by in-situ chemical oxidation.

Application of Advanced Oxidation Technology in Sludge Conditioning and Dewatering: A Critical Review

Sludge dewatering is an important link in sludge treatment. In practical engineering, the dewatering effect of unconditioned sludge is very poor. The use of advanced oxidation technology can improve sludge dewatering performance, reduce sludge capacity, and remove micro-pollutants, which is beneficial for sludge post-treatment and disposal. Based on the current status of sludge conditioning and dehydration, the characteristics of the advanced oxidation method for sludge dehydration were systematically explained using various free radical reaction mechanisms and dehydration conditions. The effects of various advanced oxidation technologies on sludge conditioning and dewatering has been extensively discussed. Finally, the application prospects of the advanced oxidation technology in sludge conditioning and dewatering are presented.

Degradation of mineral-immobilized pyrene by ferrate oxidation: Role of mineral type and intermediate oxidative iron species

Ferrate (Fe(VI)) salts like K₂FeO₄ are efficient green oxidants to remediate organic contaminants in water treatment. Minerals are efficient sorbents of contaminants and also excellent solid heterogeneous catalysts which might affect Fe(VI) remediation processes. By targeting the typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound - pyrene, the application of Fe(VI) for oxidation of pyrene immobilized on three minerals, i.e., montmorillonite, kaolinite and goethite was studied for the first time. Pyrene immobilized on the three minerals was efficiently oxidized by Fe(VI), with 87%-99% of pyrene (10 μM) being degraded at pH 9.0 in the presence of a 50-fold molar excess Fe(VI). Different minerals favored different pH optima for pyrene degradation, with pH optima from neutral to alkaline following the order of montmorillonite (pH 7.0), kaolinite (pH 8.0), and goethite (pH 9.0). Although goethite revealed the highest catalytic activity on pyrene degradation by Fe(VI), the greater noneffective loss of the oxidative species by ready self-decay in the goethite system resulted in lower degradation efficiency compared to montmorillonite. Protonation and Lewis acid on montmorillonite and goethite assisted Fe(VI) oxidation of pyrene. The intermediate ferrate species (Fe(V)/Fe(IV)) were the dominant oxidative species accountable for pyrene oxidation, while the contribution of Fe(VI) species was negligible. Hydroxyl radical was involved in mineral-immobilized pyrene degradation and contributed to 11.5%-27.4% of the pyrene degradation in montmorillonite system, followed by kaolinite (10.8%-21.4%) and goethite (5.1%-12.2%) according to the hydroxyl radical quenching experiments. Cations abundant in the matrix and dissolved humic acid hampered pyrene degradation. Finally, two different degradation pathways both producing phthalic acid were identified. This study demonstrates efficient Fe(VI) oxidation of pyrene immobilized on minerals and contributes to the development of efficient environmentally friendly Fe(VI) based remediation techniques.

Adsorption of environmental contaminants on micro- and nano-scale plastic polymers and the influence of weathering processes on their adsorptive attributes

Increases in plastic-related pollution and their weathering can be a serious threat to environmental sustainability and human health, especially during the present COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus) pandemic. Planetary risks of plastic waste disposed from diverse sources are exacerbated by the weathering-driven alterations in their physical-chemical attributes and presence of hazardous pollutants mediated through adsorption. Besides, plastic polymers act as vectors of toxic chemical contaminants and pathogenic microbes through sorption onto the 'plastisphere' (i.e., plastic-microbe/biofilm-environment interface). In this review, the effects of weathering-driven alterations on the plastisphere are addressed in relation to the fate/cycling of environmental contaminants along with the sorption/desorption dynamics of micro-/nano-scale plastic (MPs/NPs) polymers for emerging contaminants (e.g., endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and certain heavy metals). The weathering processes, pathways, and mechanisms governing the adsorption of specific environmental pollutants on MPs/NPs surface are thus evaluated in relation to the physicochemical alterations based on several kinetic and isotherm studies. Consequently, the detailed evaluation on the role of the complex associations between weathering and physicochemical properties of plastics should help us gain a better knowledge with respect to the transport, behavior, fate, and toxicological chemistry of plastics along with the proper tactics for their sustainable remediation.

Enhancement of wastewater treatment performance using 3D printed structures: A major focus on material composition, performance, challenges, and sustainable assessment

In order to enhance the performance and sustainability of wastewater treatment technologies, researchers are showing keen interest in the development of novel materials which can overcome the drawbacks associated with conventional materials. In this context, 3D printing gained significant attention due to its capability of fabricating complex geometrics using different material compositions. The present review focuses on recent advancements of 3D printing applications in various physicochemical and biological wastewater treatment techniques. In physicochemical treatment methods, substantial research has been aimed at fabricating feed spacers and other membrane parts, photocatalytic feed spacers, catalysts, scaffolds, monoliths, and capsules. Several advantages, such as membrane fouling mitigation, enhanced degradation efficiency, and recovery and reusability potential, have been associated with the aforementioned 3D printed materials. While in biofilm-based biological treatment methods, the use of 3D printed bio-carriers has led to enhanced mass transfer efficiency and microbial activities. Moreover, the application of these bio-carriers has shown better removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (∼90%), total nitrogen (∼73%), ammonia nitrogen (95%), and total phosphorous (∼100%). Although the removal efficiencies were comparable with conventional carriers, 3D printed carriers led to ∼40% reduction in hydraulic retention time, which could significantly save capital and operational expenditures. This review also emphasizes the challenges and sustainability aspects of 3D printing technology and outlines future recommendations which could be vital for further research in this field.

Adsorption capacity of composite bio-modified geopolymer for multi-component heavy metal system: optimisation, equilibrium and kinetics study

Industrialisation and urbanisation contribute greatly to the deposition of toxic waste and metalloids to the environment. Therefore, the use of efficient and eco-friendly materials such as geopolymers and biopolymers is essential for the adsorption of the toxic metals. The implementation of these low-cost sorbents has fascinated a great deal of interest owing to effectiveness, ease of operation, less environmental impact, etc. In this study, biocomposites were synthesised from bio-treatment of geopolymer (kaolin and palm oil fuel ash) using an anionic biopolymer. The biocomposites were utilised as biosorbent for removal of Cu, Fe and Zn in a multi-component system, with the process parameters optimised. FTIR and SEM/EDX outcomes clearly denoted the microporous framework of geopolymer structures and the presence of bio-molecules from the biopolymer. XRD and XRF techniques on the precursors described suitability for geopolymerisation due to the rich aluminate-silicate content. Based on response surface methodology, the adsorption capacities for Cu, Fe and Zn are 35.01 mg/g, 45.175 mg/g and 44.630 mg/g at optimal conditions of pH (7.5), time (40.5 min), metal ion concentration (80 mg/l), biosorbent dosage (0.2 g) and biopolymer concentration (0.75 g in 50 ml). The multi-component system was apt with the modified competitive Langmuir isotherm which described the homogeneity of the prominent sites of the biocomposites. Based on the adsorption kinetics, Cu was only dominated by the pseudo-first-order reaction (PFOR) while Fe and Zn were influenced by both PFOR and intra-particle diffusion processes. The result obtained from the synthesised biocomposites recommends application to actual wastewater systems.

Ferrate (VI)-mediated transformation of diethyl phthalate (DEP) in soil: Kinetics, degradation mechanisms and theoretical calculation

Diethyl phthalate (DEP), as a kind of universally used plasticizer, has aroused considerable public concern owing to its wide detection, environmental stability, and potential health risks. In this work, the highly efficient removal of DEP by ferrate (VI) (Fe(VI)) was systematically explored in soil environment. The effects of the oxidant dosages, soil types, as well as the presence of coexisting cations and anions in tested soil on DEP removal were evaluated. When the dosage of Fe(VI) was 20 mM, complete removal of DEP (50 μg/g) was achieved in the tested soil after 2 min of reaction. Furthermore, the removal rate of DEP was closely related to the soil types, and the degradation rates were decreased obviously in red soil (RS), black soil (BS) and paddy soil (PS), probably due to the acidic condition and high content of organic matters. Moreover, the presence of Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and Al³⁺ in soil can inhibit the removal of DEP by Fe(VI), while SO₄^2- has an slightly promotion effect. Six oxidation intermediates were detected in the reaction process of DEP, product analysis revealed that the transformation of DEP was mainly through two pathways, including hydrolysis and hydroxylation reactions, which were probably mediated by oxygen atom transfer process of Fe(VI). Based on the frontier electron density theory calculation, two ester groups of DEP were prone to be attacked by Fe(VI), and the hydroxyl addition tended to occur at the para-position of one of the ester groups on the benzene ring. This study provides a novel approach for phthalate esters removal from soil using Fe(VI) oxidation and shows new insights into the oxidation mechanisms.

Poly (4,4'-methylenedianiline)-graphene oxide nanocomposite: synthesize and application in removal of benzothiophene from model liquid fuel

The adsorption of sulfur-containing compounds from fuels on polymer nanocomposite adsorbents modified with carbon-based materials was investigated. This work reports the removal of benzothiophene from the model liquid fuel using a novel adsorbent prepared by nanopoly (4,4'-methylenedianiline)-graphene oxide (NPMDA/GO) composite. The adsorbent was successfully synthesized with the in situ electrochemical method and characterized using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), field-scattering scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transient electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The results showed that the presence of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in NPMDA/GO composite adsorbent due to its high tendency to sulfur would increase the adsorption of benzothiophene compared to unmodified nanopoly (4,4'-methylenedianiline) (NPMDA). The π_complexation, oxygenated organic functional groups, and layered sheets of graphene oxide improve adsorption capacity for desulfurization. The NPMDA/GO composite presented maximum efficiency (63.33%) at 30 mg/L initial concentration, 120 mg adsorbent dose, and 120 min contact time at 25 °C. Furthermore, the adsorbent shows an almost good reusability after four cycles (67.12 mg/g sulfur absorption capacity). Pseudo-second-order model (R² = 0.9975) and the Freundlich isotherm (R² = 0.8813) were used to describe the adsorption process. Findings confirm that NPMDA/GO composite can be applicable for removal of benzothiophene from liquid fuels.

Reduction of cytotoxicity and DNA double-strand break effects of wastewater by ferrate(VI): Roles of oxidation and coagulation

Ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) can oxidize individual pollutants, but the pollutant oxidation does not necessarily result in toxicity reduction. Besides, Fe(VI) resultant Fe(III) particles has previously been used to remove heavy metals, but its influence on organic matter and toxicity of wastewater is unknown. This study investigated influence of Fe(VI) on the cytotoxicity and DNA double-strand break (DSB) effects of secondary effluents from wastewater treatment plants to Chinese hamster ovary cells. Adding 5.0 mg/L Fe(VI) as Fe reduced the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of secondary effluents by 44%-71% and 40%-59%, respectively. The toxicity reduction could be explained by the alleviation of oxidative stress in cells when they were exposed to the Fe(VI)-treated organic matter. Oxidation and coagulation accounted for 60 and 40% of the reductions in cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, demonstrating that both oxidation and coagulation processes can play important roles in reducing toxicity. Molecular weight (MW)-distribution analysis showed that the oxidation process was favored for removing ultraviolet absorbance and fluorescence intensity of organic matter, while the coagulation process removed more dissolved organic carbon (DOC), especially the DOC of fractions with MW < 500 Da. Compared with ferric chloride, the Fe(VI) resultant Fe(III) showed better coagulation performance on organic matter, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity removal, because of the different particle sizes and crystalline structures. This study highlights the benefit of using Fe(VI) in advanced treatment as Fe(VI) reduced the overall toxicity of secondary effluents.

Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Using Tannin-Rich Extract and Coating onto Cotton Textiles for Catalytic Degradation of Congo Red

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized under ambient conditions from chloroauric acid in aqueous solution at pH 4. Tannin-rich extract from Xylocarpus granatum bark was used as both reducing and capping agent, rapidly converting Au (I) salt to AuNPs. Transmission electron microscopy showed the as-prepared AuNPs to be predominantly spherical, with an average diameter of 17 nm. The AuNPs were tested for catalytic reduction of Congo red (CR), a carcinogenic azo dye, in aqueous sodium borohydride solution. Cotton samples were coated with the AuNPs, taking on a reddish-purple color. The samples showed significantly reduced tearing strength after coating, though tensile strength was unaffected. UV-visible spectroscopy was used to determine the dye concentration in the water. CR degradation was observed only when AuNPs were present, and the efficiency of degradation was strongly linked to the AuNP loading. The AuNP-coated fabrics left only a 4.7% CR concentration in the solution after 24 h and therefore promise as a heterogeneous catalyst for degradation of CR in aqueous solution.

A Critical Review of Resistance and Oxidation Mechanisms of Sb-Oxidizing Bacteria for the Bioremediation of Sb(III) Pollution

Antimony (Sb) is a priority pollutant in many countries and regions due to its chronic toxicity and potential carcinogenicity. Elevated concentrations of Sb in the environmental originating from mining and other anthropogenic sources are of particular global concern, so the prevention and control of the source of pollution and environment remediation are urgent. It is widely accepted that indigenous microbes play an important role in Sb speciation, mobility, bioavailability, and fate in the natural environment. Especially, antimony-oxidizing bacteria can promote the release of antimony from ore deposits to the wider environment. However, it can also oxidize the more toxic antimonite [Sb(III)] to the less-toxic antimonate [Sb(V)], which is considered as a potentially environmentally friendly and efficient remediation technology for Sb pollution. Therefore, understanding its biological oxidation mechanism has great practical significance to protect environment and human health. This paper reviews studies of the isolation, identification, diversity, Sb(III) resistance mechanisms, Sb(III) oxidation characteristics and mechanism and potential application of Sb-oxidizing bacteria. The aim is to provide a theoretical basis and reference for the diversity and metabolic mechanism of Sb-oxidizing bacteria, the prevention and control of Sb pollution sources, and the application of environment treatment for Sb pollution.

Abiotic oxidation of arsenite in natural and engineered systems: Mechanisms and related controversies over the last two decades (1999-2020)

Abiotic oxidation of toxic As(III) to As(V) is being deemed as a necessary step for the overall arsenic decontamination in both natural and engineered systems. Direct oxidation of As(III) by chemical oxidants, such as ozone, permanganate, ferrate, chlorine and chloramine, or naturally occurring minerals like Mn, Fe oxides, seems straightforward. Both O₂ and H₂O₂ are ineffective for arsenite oxidation, but they can be activated by reducing substances like Fe²⁺, Fe⁰ to increase the oxidation rates. Photo-induced oxidation of As(III) has been demonstrated effective in Fe complexes or minerals, NO₃^-/NO₂^-, dissolved organic matter (DOM), peroxygens and TiO₂ systems. Although a variety of oxidation methods have been developed over the past two decades, there remain many scientific and technical challenges that must be overcome before the rapid progress in basic knowledge can be translated into environmental benefits. To better understand the trends in the existing data and to identify the knowledge gaps, this review describes in detail the complicated mechanisms for As(III) oxidation by various methods and emphasizes on the conflicting data and explanation. Some prevailing concerns and challenges in the sphere of As(III) oxidation are also pointed out so as to appeal to researchers for further investigations.

Stabilization of Soil Arsenic with Iron and Nano-Iron Materials: A Review

Soil arsenic (As) contamination is an important environmental problem, and chemical stabilization is one of the major techniques used to remediate soil As contamination. Iron and iron nanoparticle materials are widely used for soil As stabilization because they have one or more of the following advantages: high adsorption capacity, high reduction capacity, cost effectiveness and environmental friendliness. Therefore, this review introduces the stabilization of soil As with iron and iron nanoparticles, including zero-valent iron, iron oxides/hydroxides, some iron salts and Fe-based binary oxides and the nanoparticles of these iron materials. The mechanism of chemical soil As stabilization, which involves adsorption and the coprecipitation process, is discussed. The factors affecting the chemical stabilization process are presented, and challenges to overcome in the future are also discussed in this review.

An Electrochemical Aptasensor for Pb2+ Detection Based on Metal-Organic-Framework-Derived Hybrid Carbon

A new double-shelled carbon nanocages material was synthesized and developed an aptasensor for determining Pb²⁺ in aqueous solution. Herein, nanoporous carbon materials derived from core–shell zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) demonstrated excellent electrochemical activity, stability, and high specificity surface area, consequently resulting in the strong binding with aptamers. The aptamer strands would be induced to form G-quadruplex structure when Pb²⁺ was introduced. Under optimal conditions, the aptasensor exhibited a good linear relationship of Pb²⁺ concentration ranging from 0.1 to 10 μg L⁻¹ with the detection limits of 0.096 μg L⁻¹. The feasibility was proved by detecting Pb²⁺ in spiked water samples and polluted soil digestion solution. The proposed aptasensor showed excellent selectivity and reproducibility, indicating promising applications in environmental monitoring.

Enhancement of short-chain fatty acids production from microalgae by potassium ferrate addition: Feasibility, mechanisms and implications

Anaerobic fermentation of microalgae was always hindered by its rigid cell wall structure. This paper reports a novel technique, i.e., adding potassium ferrate (K₂FeO₄) into microalgae fermentation systems to enhance short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production. The results showed that the maximum SCFAs production and acetic acid proportion were 732.6 mg COD/g VS and 54.6% at a dosage of 112.8 mg Fe(VI)/g VS, which were 168% and 208% of those in the control, respectively. Mechanism studies revealed that K₂FeO₄ effectively destroyed surface morphology and cell structure, and thus facilitated microalgae solubilization, providing a large number of biodegradable substrates for subsequent SCFA production. Although K₂FeO₄ inhibited all the microbial activities relevant to hydrolysis, acidification and methanogenesis processes to some degree, its inhibition to methanogens was much severer than that to other microbes. Illumina MiSeq sequencing analyses revealed that K₂FeO₄ addition increased the relative abundance (from 9.45% to 50.4%) of hydrolytic and SCFAs-forming bacteria.

Removal of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) from Produced Water by Ferrate (VI) Oxidation

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mutagenic and carcinogenic contaminants made up of fused benzene rings. Their presence has been reported in several wastewater streams, including produced water (PW), which is the wastewater obtained during oil and gas extraction from onshore or offshore installations. In this study, ferrate (VI) oxidation was used for the first time for the treatment of 15 PAHs, with the total concentration of 1249.11 μg/L in the produced water sample. The operating parameters viz., ferrate (VI) dosage, pH, and contact time were optimized for maximum removal of PAHs and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Central composite design (CCD) based on response surface methodology (RSM) was used for optimization and modeling to evaluate the optimal values of operating parameters. PAH and COD removal percentages were selected as the dependent variables. The study showed that 89.73% of PAHs and 73.41% of COD were removed from PW at the optimal conditions of independent variables, i.e., ferrate (VI) concentration (19.35 mg/L), pH (7.1), and contact time (68.34 min). The high values of the coefficient of determination (R2) for PAH (96.50%) and COD (98.05%) removals show the accuracy and the suitability of the models. The results showed that ferrate (VI) oxidation was an efficient treatment method for the successful removal of PAHs and COD from PW. The study also revealed that RSM is an effective tool for the optimization of operating variables, which could significantly help to reduce the time and cost of experimentation.

Multifunctional Magnetic Oxide Nanoparticle (MNP) Core-Shell: Review of Synthesis, Structural Studies and Application for Wastewater Treatment

The demand for water is predicted to increase significantly over the coming decades; thus, there is a need to develop an inclusive wastewater decontaminator for the effective management and conservation of water. Magnetic oxide nanocomposites have great potentials as global and novel remediators for wastewater treatment, with robust environmental and economic gains. Environment-responsive nanocomposites would offer wide flexibility to harvest and utilize massive untapped natural energy sources to drive a green economy in tandem with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Recent attempts to engineer smart magnetic oxide nanocomposites for wastewater treatment has been reported by several researchers. However, the magnetic properties of superparamagnetic nanocomposite materials and their adsorption properties nexus as fundamental to the design of recyclable nanomaterials are desirable for industrial application. The potentials of facile magnetic recovery, ease of functionalization, reusability, solar responsiveness, biocompatibility and ergonomic design promote the application of magnetic oxide nanocomposites in wastewater treatment. The review makes a holistic attempt to explore magnetic oxide nanocomposites for wastewater treatment; futuristic smart magnetic oxides as an elixir to global water scarcity is expounded. Desirable adsorption parameters and properties of magnetic oxides nanocomposites are explored while considering their fate in biological and environmental media.

Overlooked Role of Fe(IV) and Fe(V) in Organic Contaminant Oxidation by Fe(VI)

Fe(VI) has received increasing attention since it can decompose a wide range of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in water treatment. However, the role of short-lived Fe(IV) and Fe(V) in TrOC decomposition by Fe(VI) has been overlooked. Using methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO), carbamazepine, and caffeine as probe TrOCs, we observed that the apparent second-order rate constants (k_app) between TrOCs and Fe(VI) determined with the initial kinetics data were strongly dependent on the initial molar ratios of TrOCs to Fe(VI). Furthermore, the k_app value increases gradually as the reaction proceeds. Several lines of evidence suggested that these phenomena were ascribed to the accumulation of Fe(IV) and Fe(V) arising from Fe(VI) decay. Kinetic models were built and employed to simulate the kinetics of Fe(VI) self-decay and the kinetics of PMSO degradation by Fe(VI). The modeling results revealed that PMSO was mainly degraded by Fe(IV) and Fe(V) rather than by Fe(VI) per se and Fe(V) played a dominant role, which was also supported by the density functional theory calculation results. Given that Fe(IV) and Fe(V) have much greater oxidizing reactivity than Fe(VI), this work urges the development of Fe(V)/Fe(IV)-based oxidation technology for efficient degradation of TrOCs.

Ferrate(VI) oxidation of pentachlorophenol in water and soil

Although the use of ferrate (VI), an emerging green oxidant, has been widely investigated to remove organic pollutants in water, its ability to remediate contaminated soils has been scarcely evaluated. Here, we explore the use of ferrate (VI) to degrade a polychlorinated persistent compound, the pentachlorophenol (PCP), in aqueous solution and in an aged contaminated soil under batch, water-saturated and water-unsaturated flow conditions. The first results showed the prominent efficiency of ferrate (VI) over conventional oxidants (e.g. H₂O₂ and persulfate) in both matrices and at different oxidant doses. In aqueous solution, more than 80% of PCP was degraded by ferrate (VI) while complete removal was observed in soil under batch conditions. In column experiments, PCP removal by ferrate (VI) remained efficient but dependent on the flow rate and water saturation. Maximum PCP removal (95%) in columns was observed under water saturated conditions when ferrate (VI) (0.2 g g^-1 of soil) was injected at a low flow rate (i.e. 0.025 mL min^-1). This study has strong implications in the development of new sustainable processes based on ferrate (VI) for the remediation of different environmental compartments.

Application of Chemically Exfoliated Boron Nitride Nanosheets Doped with Co to Remove Organic Pollutants Rapidly from Textile Water

Two-dimensional layered materials doped with transition metals exhibit enhanced magnetization and improved catalytic stability during water treatment leading to potential environmental applications across several industrial sectors. In the present study, cobalt (Co)-doped boron nitride nanosheets (BN-NS) were explored for such an application. Chemical exfoliation process was used to exfoliate BN-NS and the hydrothermal route was adopted to incorporate Co dopant in various concentrations (e.g., 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt%). X-ray diffraction (XRD) study indicated that crystallinity improved upon doping with the formation of a hexagonal phase of the synthesized material. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) confirmed enhanced crystallinity, which corroborates XRD results. Interlayer spacing was evaluated through a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) equipped with Gatan digital micrograph software. Compositional and functional group analysis was undertaken with energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, respectively. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and HR-TEM were utilized to probe surface morphologies of prepared samples. Bonding modes in the sample were identified through Raman analysis. Optical properties were examined using UV-vis spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectra were acquired to estimate the separation and recombination of excitons. Magnetic properties were studied by means of hysteresis loop acquired using VSM measurements. Methylene blue dye was degraded with as-prepared host and doped nanosheets used as catalysts and investigated through absorption spectra ranging from 250 to 800 nm. The experimental results of this study indicate that Co-doped BN-NS showed enhanced magnetic properties and can be used to degrade dyes present as an effluent in industrial wastewater.

Insights into mechanisms of UV/ferrate oxidation for degradation of phenolic pollutants: Role of superoxide radicals

In this study, the performances and mechanisms of UV/ferrate(VI) oxidation were investigated comprehensively using 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as a probe compound. UV/ferrate(VI) oxidation could efficiently degrade 2,4-DCP and its oxidation ability outperformed conventional UV-based advanced oxidation processes. Moreover, the degradation process of 2,4-DCP followed the pseudo-first order kinetics. In the absence of phosphate buffer, the rate constant of 2,4-DCP degradation increased from 9.4 × 10^-3 to 2.4 × 10^-2 min^-1 when pH value was increased from 3.0 to 6.0. However, the degradation was significantly inhibited by phosphate buffer at an identical pH due to the complexation of phosphate with the ferrate(VI) decay products. HCO₃^- appreciably accelerated the degradation of 2,4-DCP, while Cl^- showed a negligible effect on the degradation. For the first time, combining with the results of chemical probe method, competitive kinetic experiment, electron spin resonance spectra and radical quenching studies, superoxide radicals were demonstrated as the dominant reactive species responsible for the degradation. On the basis of the intermediates detected by LC-MS/MS analysis, a pathway for 2,4-DCP degradation was proposed. This study provides a novel approach for contaminant removal using UV/ferrate(VI) oxidation and sheds new insights into the oxidation mechanisms.

Development, validation, comparison, and implementation of a highly efficient and effective method using magnetic solid-phase extraction with hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced materials for LC-MS/MS analysis of pesticides in seawater

To achieve multi-pesticides residue analysis in seawater, hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced magnetic particles were designed and fabricated by swelling polymerization of divinyl benzene (DVB) and N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) on the surface of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ magnetic particles. The ratio of DVB to NVP was adjusted to achieve a proper balance in hydrophilicity and lipophilicity. The obtained magnetic particles were systematically characterized by TEM, SEM, FT-IR and vibrating sample magnetization. Based on the optimized magnetic nanoparticles, a sensitive magnetic solid-phase extraction method was developed for the simultaneous pre-concentration and determination of 96-pesticide residues from large-volume seawater samples prior to being detected by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Recoveries of pesticides in spiked seawater samples (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0 μg L^-1) ranged from 62% to 112% with RSDs less than 21%. The method limits of detection of 96 pesticides ranged from 0.13 to 0.42 ng L^-1, the method limits of quantification of 96 pesticides ranged from 1.0 to 10 ng L^-1. The method was successfully applied to pesticide residue analysis in water samples from Jiulong River Estuary of China, demonstrating the prospects of this technique as a potential method for the rapid determination of trace levels of multi-pesticide residues in seawater.

Evaluation of Contamination and Ecological Risk of Heavy Metals Associated with Cement Production in Ewekoro, Southwest Nigeria

BACKGROUND

Exposure to heavy metals emanating from cement production and other anthropogenic activities can pose ecological risks.

OBJECTIVES

A detailed investigation was carried out to assess the contamination and ecological risk of heavy metals associated with dust released during cement production.

METHODS

Sixty samples, including 30 soils and 30 plants, were collected around Lafarge Cement Production Company. Control samples of soil and plants were collected in areas where human activities are limited. Samples were dried, sieved (for soil; 65 μm), packaged and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry at Acme Laboratory in Canada.

RESULTS

The average concentration of heavy metals in soils of the area are: copper (Cu): 41.63 mg/kg; lead (Pb): 35.43 mg/kg; zinc (Zn): 213.64 mg/kg; chromium (Cr): 35.60 mg/kg; cobalt (Co): 3.84 mg/kg and nickel (Ni): 5.13 mg/kg. Concentrations of Cr in soils were above the recommended standards, while other metals were below recommended limits. The average concentrations of heavy metals in plants were: Cu: 26.32 mg/kg; Pb: 15.46 mg/kg; Zn: 213.94 mg/kg; Cr: 30.62 mg/kg; Co: 0.45 mg/kg and Ni: 3.77 mg/kg. Levels of heavy metals in plants were all above international limits. Geo-accumulation of metals in soils ranged between -0.15 and 6.32, while the contamination factor ranged between 0.53 and 119.59. Ecological risk index of heavy metals in soils ranged between 49.71 and 749.

DISCUSSION

All metals in soils of the study area except for Cr were below the allowable limits, while the levels of metals in plants were above the permissible limits. Levels of heavy metals reported in this study were higher than those from similar cement production areas. Soils around the Ewekoro cement production area were low to extremely contaminated by toxic metals. Cement production, processing, transportation in conjunction with the abandoned railway track in the area greatly contribute to the high degree of contamination observed in the area. Metal transfers from soil to plant are a common phenomenon. The metals pose low to considerable ecological risk.

CONCLUSIONS

Anthropogenic sources, especially cement processing activities, release heavy metals which leads to progressive pollution of the environment and poses high ecological risk.

Molecular mechanisms in phytoremediation of environmental contaminants and prospects of engineered transgenic plants/microbes

Concerns about emerging environmental contaminants have been growing along with industrialization and urbanization around the globe. Among various options for remediating these contaminants, phytotechnology is suggested as a feasible option to maintain the environmental sustainability. The recent advances in phytoremediation, genetic/molecular/omics/metabolic engineering, and nanotechnology are opening new paths for efficient treatment of emerging organic/inorganic contaminants. In this respect, elucidation of molecular mechanisms and genetic engineering of hyperaccumulator plants is expected to enhance remediation of environmental contaminants. This review was organized to offer valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms of phytoremediation and the prospects of transgenic hyperaccumulators with enhanced stress tolerance to diverse contaminants such as heavy metals and metalloids, xenobiotics, explosives, poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides, and nanoparticles. The roles of genoremediation and nanoparticles in augmenting the phytoremediation technology are also described in an interrelated framework with biotechnological prospects (e.g., plant molecular nano-farming). Finally, political debate on the preferential use of crops versus non-crop hyperaccumulators in genoremediation, limitations of transgenics in phytotechnologies, and their public acceptance issues are discussed in the policy framework.

Enhanced electro-generated ferrate using Fe(0)-plated carbon sheet as an anode and its online utilization for removal of cyanide

Efficient electrochemical generation of ferrate (Fe(VI)) is still challenged by the passivation of iron materials. Herein, we employed Fe(0)-plated carbon sheet as an anode to enable an efficient production of Fe(VI) with its concentration reached up to 55 mM, which was 8 times higher than that with iron sheet of the same size as an anode. The SEM results showed that the close and uniform dispersion of tapered Fe(0) particles on the surface of carbon sheet helped prevent the formation of passivated layer. The preparative process of electro-deposited Fe(0) affected the generation of Fe(VI). The increase of electroplating time to 40 min and electroplating temperature to 30 °C promoted the production of Fe(VI), and the change in the concentration of Fe²⁺ in electroplated solution showed little impact on Fe(VI) generation. However, the addition of additives inhibited Fe(VI) generation. As well, an effective removal of cyanide was achieved using on-line production of Fe(VI), comparable to that by NaClO and higher than that by other traditional oxidants containing H₂O₂, O₃, and KMnO₄. This study would provide an simple and promising iron anode for efficient production of Fe(VI) by electrochemical method.

Oxidation of sulfonamides by ferrate(VI): Reaction kinetics, transformation byproducts and toxicity assesment

This study was aimed at the degradation of sulfonamides (SNs) via oxidation with Fe(VI). The reaction kinetics, identification of degradation byproducts and their toxicity were investigated. The pH solution and Fe(VI) loading had significant effects on the degradation of the sulfonamides. The maximum degradation rate occurred at pH 3.0 with a 6:1 ratio Fe(VI): sulfonamide, obtaining 100% degradation of 15 mg L^-1 SN within 5 min. Although Fe(VI) also showed an appreciable reactivity towards SNs (k_app = 9.85-19.63 × 10² M^-1 s^-1) at pH 7. The influence of solution pH on the values of k_app can be explained considering the specific reaction between Fe(VI) and SNs. Degradation rates are also influenced by the presence of inorganic ions in different water matrixes. For this reason, ions present in groundwater enhanced the SNs degradation through a synergistic effect among carbonates, sulfates and Fe(VI). Degradation byproducts identified, through UPLC analysis, allowed us to proposed three degradation pathways depending on pH. At acid pH there is a cleavage of C-S and S-N bonds. At neutral pH nitroso and nitro-derivates are formed. At basic pH hydroxylation is the main reaction. The cytotoxicity assay of HEK-293 and J774 cell lines exposed to Fe(VI) indicated that transformation byproducts had a lower toxicity than SNs as baseline products. Accordingly, this research suggests that Fe(VI) can act as a chemical oxidant to remove SNs antibiotics and it can be used to treat antibiotic pollution in wastewater.

Se(IV) oxidation by ferrate(VI) and subsequent in-situ removal of selenium species with the reduction products of ferrate(VI): performance and mechanism

In order to treat selenium pollution, the study presents the use of potassium ferrate (K₂FeO₄) as an environmentally friendly agent for in situ removal of Se(IV) from aqueous media. Batch experiments were carried out to evaluate the influences of various factors including dosage of K₂FeO₄, ex-situ and in-situ adsorption, initial pH, and adsorption isotherms. The results showed that increasing dosage of K₂FeO₄ benefited the removal of total selenium with the efficiency up to 97.0% and Se(IV) removal significantly depended on pH, and as the pH increases, the decrease in Se(IV) adsorption efficiency is a general trend of pH dependence. The X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectrometer and high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that Se(IV) was removed from the aqueous solution by adsorbing on the surface of the decomposition products of K₂FeO₄ which are ferric oxide nanoparticles, and the selenium adsorbed on the generated ferric oxide nanoparticles existed in the forms of Se(IV) and Se(VI). Se(IV) and Se(VI) were adsorbed to the decomposition products of K₂FeO₄ by forming an inner-sphere complexes and an outer-sphere complexes, respectively.

FerrateVI oxidation of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs and polar PACs) on DNAPL-spiked sand: degradation efficiency and oxygenated by-product formation compared to conventional oxidants

In situ chemical oxidations are known to remediate PAH contaminations in groundwater and soils. In this study, batch-scale oxidations aim to compare the PAC (polycyclic aromatic compound) degradation of three oxidation processes traditionally applied for soil treatment: permanganate, heat-activated persulfate (60 °C) and Fenton-like activated by magnetite, to results obtained with ferrates (Fe^VI). Widely studied for water treatments, ferrates are efficient on a wide range of pollutants with the advantage of producing nontoxic ferric sludge after reaction. However, fewer works focus on their action on soil, especially on semi-industrial grade ferrates (compatible with field application). Oxidations were carried out on sand spiked with dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) sampled in the groundwater of a former coking plant. Conventional 16 US-EPA PAHs and polar PACs were monitored, especially potential oxygenated by-products that can be more harmful than parent-PAHs. After seven reaction days, only the Fenton-like showed limited degradation. Highest efficiencies were obtained for heat-activated persulfate with no O-PAC ketones formed. Permanganate gave important degradation, but ketones were generated in large amount. The tested ferrates not only gave slightly lower yields due to their auto-decomposition but also induced O-PAC ketone production, suggesting a reactional pathway dominated by oxidoreductive electron transfer, rather than a radical one.

A Comparative Study of the Toxicity of Polyethylene Glycol-Coated Cobalt Ferrite Nanospheres and Nanoparticles

We present a comparative study of the toxicity of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated cobalt ferrite nanoparticles and nanospheres. Nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal method while nanospheres were prepared by solvothermal technique. The surface of nanomaterials was successfully modified with polyethylene glycol. To investigate the morphology of the prepared samples, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electron microscopy techniques were employed. Structural analyses confirmed the formation of polycrystalline cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with diameters in the range 20-25 nm and nanospheres in the range 80-100 nm, respectively. Kunming SPF mice (female, 6-8 weeks old) were used to investigate the toxicity induced by cobalt ferrite nanoparticles and nanospheres in different organs of the mice. Biodistribution studies, biochemical indices, histopathological assessments, inflammatory factors, oxidation and antioxidant levels, and cytotoxicity tests were performed to assess the toxicity induced by cobalt ferrite nanoparticles and nanospheres in mice. Cobalt ferrite nanospheres were found to be more toxic than the nanoparticles and curcumin was proved to be a good healing agent for the toxicity induced by PEG-coated cobalt ferrite nanomaterials in mice.

Heating Efficiency of Triple Vortex State Cylindrical Magnetic Nanoparticles

A well-established method for treating cancerous tumors is magnetic hyperthermia, which uses localized heat generated by the relaxation mechanism of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in a high-frequency alternating magnetic field. In this work, we investigate the heating efficiency of cylindrical NiFe MNPs, fabricated by template-assisted pulsed electrodeposition combined with differential chemical etching. The cylindrical geometry of the MNP enables the formation of the triple vortex state, which increases the heat generation efficiency by four times. Using time-dependent calorimetric measurements, the specific absorption rate (SAR) of the MNPs was determined and compared with the numerical calculations from micromagnetic simulations and vibrating sample magnetometer measurements. The magnetization reversal of high aspect ratios MNPs showed higher remanent magnetization and low-field susceptibility leading to higher hysteresis losses, which was reflected in higher experimental and theoretical SAR values. The SAR dependence on magnetic field strength exhibited small SAR values at low magnetic fields and saturates at high magnetic fields, which is correlated to the coercive field of the MNPs and a characteristic feature of ferromagnetic MNPs. The optimization of cylindrical NiFe MNPs will play a pivotal role in producing high heating performance and biocompatible magnetic hyperthermia agents.
