Mangrove forest: An important coastal ecosystem to intercept river microplastics

Topic modeling discovers trending topics in global research on the ecosystem impacts of microplastics

The ecological threats of microplastics (MPs) have sparked research worldwide. However, changes in the topics of MP research over time and space have not been evaluated quantitatively, making it difficult to identify the next frontiers. Here, we apply topic modeling to assess global spatiotemporal dynamics of MP research. We identified nine leading topics in current MP research. Over time, MP research topics have switched from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems, from distribution to fate, from ingestion to toxicology, and from physiological toxicity to cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. In most of the nine leading topics, a disproportionate amount of independent and collaborative research activity was conducted in and between a few developed countries which is detrimental to understanding the environmental fates of MPs in a global context. This review recognizes the urgent need for more attention to emerging topics in MP research, particularly in regions that are heavily impacted but currently overlooked.

Experimental study of interception effect by submerged dam on microplastics

Submerged dam can alter microplastic (MP) transport, and act as a sink for MPs. In this paper, we investigated the interception rates of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and Polystyrene (PS) by an artificial submerged dam in a flow flume at first, and found that most of the un-intercepted PVC and PS particles by the dam accumulated behind it under the subcritical (Fr < 1) and turbulent (Re > 500) flows. PVC particles behind the dam mainly concentrated within two dam widths, and the concentration of PS particles decreased with the distance behind the dam lengthening. Then, we performed linear regression fitting and Redundancy Analysis (RDA) between the interception rates collected in 162 experiment tests and environmental factors, including flow velocity, distance to dam and MP concentration. The results showed that the interception rate of PVC and PS particles increased with the distance to dam lengthening, but decreased with the flow velocity and MP concentration heightening. RDA revealed that the interception rate was influenced by flow velocity, distance to dam, and MP concentration from the most to the least. Our findings are believed to contribute to understanding the mechanism of the interception effect of submerged dam on microplastics.

Fiddler crabs (Tubuca arcuata) as bioindicators of microplastic pollution in mangrove sediments

In recent years, microplastics (MPs) have been widely found in the environment and pose potential risks to ecosystems, which attracted people's attention. Using bioindicators has been a great approach to understanding the pollution levels, bioavailability, and ecological risks of pollutants. However, only few studies have investigated MPs in mangrove ecosystems, with few bioindicators of MPs. Herein, the distribution of MPs in mangrove sediments and fiddler crabs (Tubuca arcuata) in mangroves was investigated. Results showed that the abundance values of MPs are 1160‒12,120 items/kg and 11-100 items/ind. in mangrove sediments and fiddler crabs, respectively. The dominant shape of MPs detected in mangrove sediments and fiddler crabs was fragments with sizes of 20‒1000 μm, larger MPs of 50-1000 μm were found in abundance. Polypropylene (PP), which is one of the most commonly used plastic materials, was the main polymer type. The distribution of MPs in fiddler crabs closely resembled that in surface mangrove sediments with a strong linear correlation (R2 > 0.8 and p < 0.05) between their abundance. Therefore, the MP contamination level in mangrove sediments can be determined by studying MP pollution in fiddler crabs. Moreover, the results of the target group index (TGI) indicated that fiddler crabs prefer feeding specific MPs in mangrove sediments. Our findings demonstrate the suitability of fiddler crabs as bioindicators for assessing MP pollution in mangrove sediments.

Comprehensive risk assessment of microplastics in tidal channel sediments in amazonian mangroves (northern Brazil)

Pollution by microplastics (MPs) in mangroves is a growing concern, given its potential ecological and human health impacts. The characteristics of microplastic pollution and a risk assessment of MPs in the Amazon region's coastal sediments are still insufficient, and information about MP pollution in the benthic component of the mangrove ecosystem is lacking. We analyzed MP concentrations in the surface sediment of 9 stations in three tidal channels along the Ajuruteua Peninsula connected to the Caeté River estuary, aiming to assess the hazard level on the environment based on the Pollution Load Index (PLI). Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy determined the MP's chemical composition. The results showed that the abundance of sediment MPs ranged from 100 to 1200 items kg-1, with an average of 433 ± 261.6 items kg-1. The MPs were mainly composed of transparent and blue fragments and fibers, ranging in size from 100 to 5000 μm. Six types of polymers were identified, including alkyd varnish (AV), resin dispersion (RD), chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), polyethylene-polypropylene (PE-PP), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and hostaperm blue (HB). Hydrodynamic processes within estuaries and tidal channels play a crucial role in explaining the concentrations found, as circulation determines the pattern of sediment deposition and the particles adhered to it. PLI risk assessment showed that all sampling sites were at hazard level I: a low level of contamination in the mangrove sediments. However, a more comprehensive and systematic monitoring campaign is needed to expand our knowledge about pollution and contamination by MPs in Amazon mangrove areas.

Seasonal dynamics, tidal influences, and anthropogenic impacts on microplastic distribution in the Yangtze River estuary: A comprehensive characterization and comparative analysis

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants with significant ecological and human health implications. This study examines the abundance, characteristics, and distribution of MPs in the Yangtze River estuary, focusing on seasonal variations, tidal cycles, and anthropogenic influences. Surface samples were collected using the Manta trawl method to ensure consistency with previous marine MP research. The study found an average MP concentration of 1.01 (± 0.65) n m-3, predominantly comprising low-density polymers such as polystyrene (38 %), polypropylene (33 %), and polyethylene (29 %). MPs were mainly fragments (34.9 %) and foam (30.7 %), with a prevalence of white particles. Seasonal analysis indicated significantly higher MP concentrations during flood seasons (1.32 ± 1.09 n m-3), nearly 1.9 times higher than during non-flood seasons (0.70 ± 0.28 n m-3). Tidal cycles also impacted MP distribution, with ebb tides showing increased concentrations (2.44 ± 1.30 n m-3) compared to flood tides (1.48 ± 2.07 n m-3). Furthermore, MP abundance showed a decreasing trend with increasing distance from urban centers, with significant correlations (0.52 < R2 < 0.65, P < 0.001). These findings underscore the necessity for seasonally adjusted monitoring and robust management strategies to combat MP pollution. The study advocates for the integration of diverse sampling methods and the consideration of environmental factors in future MP assessments, laying the groundwork for understanding the MP transport mechanism in the Yangtze River estuary and similar estuarine systems worldwide.

Nano-based remediation strategies for micro and nanoplastic pollution

Due to rapid urbanization, there have been continuous environmental threats from different pollutants, especially from microplastics. Plastic products rapidly proliferate significantly contributing to the occurrence of micro-plastics, which poses a significant environmental risk. These microplastics originated from diverse sources and are characterized by their persistent and widespread occurrence; human health and the entire ecosystem are adversely affected by them. The removal of microplastics not only requires innovative technologies but also efficient materials capable of effectively eliminating them from our environment. The progress made so far has highlighted the advantages of utilizing the dimensional and structural properties of nanomaterials to increase the effectiveness of existing methods for micro-plastic treatment, aiming for a more sustainable approach to their removal. In the current review, we demonstrate a thorough overview of the sources, occurrences, and potential harmful effects of microplastics, followed by a further discussion of promising technologies used for their removal. An in-depth examination of both advantages and a few limitations of all these given technologies, including physical, chemical, and biological approaches, has been discussed. Additionally, the review explores the use of nanomaterials as an effective means to overcome obstacles and improve the efficiency of microplastic elimination methods. n conclusion, this review addresses, current challenges in this field and outlines the future perspectives for further research in this domain.

Unveiling hidden interactions: Microorganisms, enzymes, and mangroves at different stages of succession in the Shankou Mangrove Nature Reserve, China

Understanding the interactions between microorganisms, soil extracellular enzymes, and mangroves is crucial for conserving and restoring mangrove ecosystems. However, the unique environments associated with mangroves have resulted in a lack of pertinent data regarding the interactions between these components. Root, stem, leaf, and soil samples were collected at three distinct stages of mangrove succession. Stoichiometry was employed to analyze the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents of these samples and to quantify extracellular enzyme activities, microbial biomass, and various physicochemical factors in the soil. The results showed that the trends of C, N, and P in the mangrove plants were consistent. Microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), and microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) were the highest in the Kandelia obovate community. Catalase (CAT) and β-D-G showed the highest content in K. obovate and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, whereas cellulase showed the opposite trend. Urease was least abundant in the K. obovate community, whereas neutral protease (NPR) and acid phosphatase (ACP) were most abundant. The overall soil environment in mangroves exhibited a state of N limitation, with varying degrees of limitation observed across different succession stages. The demand for P became more intense in the later stages of succession, particularly in the K. obovate and B. gymnorrhiza communities. In conjunction with correlation analysis, it indicated that the input of mangrove plant litter had a significant regulatory influence on the C, N, and P contents in the soil. There was a significant positive correlation between MBC, MBN, and MBP, indicating synergistic effects of C, N, and P on soil microorganisms. Therefore, evaluating the nutrient ratios and sufficiency of mangroves allowed us to comprehensively understand the present environmental conditions. This study aims to develop sustainable management strategies for the conservation and restoration of mangroves.

Biodegradation of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) microplastics by floc-forming bacteria, Bacillus cereus strain SHBF2, isolated from a commercial aquafarm

The ubiquitous proximity of the commonly used microplastic (MP) particles particularly polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) poses a serious threat to the environment and human health globally. Biological treatment as an environment-friendly approach to counter MP pollution has recent interest when the bio-agent has beneficial functions in their ecosystem. This study aimed to utilize beneficial floc-forming bacteria Bacillus cereus SHBF2 isolated from an aquaculture farm in reducing the MP particles (PE, PP, and PS) from their environment. The bacteria were inoculated for 60 days in a medium containing MP particle as a sole carbon source. On different days of incubation (DOI), the bacterial growth analysis was monitored and the MP particles were harvested to examine their weight loss, surface changes, and alterations in chemical properties. After 60 DOI, the highest weight loss was recorded for PE, 6.87 ± 0.92%, which was further evaluated to daily reduction rate (k), 0.00118 day-1, and half-life (t1/2), 605.08 ± 138.52 days. The OD value (1.74 ± 0.008 Abs.) indicated the higher efficiency of bacteria for PP utilization, and so for the colony formation per define volume (1.04 × 1011 CFU/mL). Biofilm formation, erosions, cracks, and fragments were evident during the observation of the tested MPs using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The formation of carbonyl and alcohol group due to the oxidation and hydrolysis by SHBF2 strain were confirmed using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) analysis. Additionally, the alterations of pH and CO2 evolution from each of the MP type ensures the bacterial activity and mineralization of the MP particles. The findings of this study have confirmed and indicated a higher degree of biodegradation for all of the selected MP particles. B. cereus SHBF2, the floc-forming bacteria used in aquaculture, has demonstrated a great potential for use as an efficient MP-degrading bacterium in the biofloc farming system in the near future to guarantee a sustainable green aquaculture production.

From pollution to solutions: Insights into the sources, transport and management of plastic debris in pristine and urban rivers

River systems are important recipients of environmental plastic pollution and have become key pathways for the transfer of mismanaged waste from the land to the ocean. Understanding the sources and fate of plastic debris, including plastic litter (>5 mm) and microplastics (MPs) (<5 mm), entering different riverine systems is essential to mitigate the ongoing environmental plastic pollution crisis. We comprehensively investigated the plastic pollution in the catchments of two rivers in the Yangtze River basin: an urban river, the Suzhou section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (SZ); and a pristine rural river, the Jingmen section of the Hanjiang River (JM). The abundance of plastic pollutants in SZ was significantly higher than in JM: 0.430 ± 0.450 items/m3 and 0.003 ± 0.003 items/m3 of plastic litter in the water; 23.47 ± 25.53 n/m3 and 2.78 ± 1.55 n/m3 MPs in the water; and 218.82 ± 77.40 items/kg and 5.30 ± 1.99 items/kg of MPs in the sediment, respectively. Plastic litter and MPs were closely correlated in abundance and polymer composition. Overall, the polymer type, shape and color of MPs were dominant by polypropylene (42.5%), fragment (60.4%) and transparent (40.0%), respectively. Source tracing analysis revealed that packaging, shipping, and wastewater were the primary sources of plastic pollutants. The mantel analysis indicated that socio-economic and geospatial factors play crucial roles in driving the hotspot formation of plastic pollution in river networks. The composition of the MP communities differed significantly between the sediments and the overlying water. The urban riverbed sediments had a more pronounced pollutant 'sink' effect compared with the pristine rivers. These findings suggested that the modification of natural streams during urbanization may influence the transport and fate of plastic pollutants in them. Our results offer pivotal insights into effective preventive measures.

Mangrove plants are promising bioindicator of coastal atmospheric microplastics pollution

Plastics are commonly used by society and their break down into millimeter-sized bits known as microplastics (MPs). Due to the possibility of exposure, reports of them in atmospheric deposition, indoor, and outdoor air have sparked worry for public health. In tropical and subtropical regions all throughout the world, mangroves constitute a distinctive and significant type of coastal wetlands. Mangrove plants are considered to have the effect of accumulating sediment MPs, but the sedimentation of atmospheric MPs has not been reported. In this study, we illustrated the characteristics, abundance and spatial distribution of MPs in different species of mangrove leaves along the Seagull Island in Guangzhou. MPs samples from leaves in five species showed various shapes, colors, compositions, sizes and abundance. Acanthus ilicifolius had an average fallout rate of 1223 items/m2/day which has the highest abundance of MPs in all samples. Four shapes of MPs were found in all leaves surfaces including fiber, fragment, pellet, and film, with fiber is the most. The dominant types of MPs in all leaves were cellulose and rayon. Most of the total MPs size were smaller than 2 mm. Clearly, the microstructures of each species leaf surfaces had an impact on its ability to retain MPs. The plants rough blade surfaces and big folds or gullies caused more particles to accumulate and had a higher MPs retention capacity. Overall, our study contributes to a better knowledge of the condition of MPs pollution in atmosphere and the connection between leaves structure and the retention of MPs, which indicates that mangrove plants are promising bioindicator of coastal atmospheric MPs pollution.

Dynamic fluctuations in plant leaf interception of airborne microplastics

Plant leaves have been demonstrated to be a crucial sink of airborne microplastics (MPs). However, because of the particular shape of MPs and their relatively weak forces with leaves, the traditional accumulation model used for the adsorption of particulate matter and persistent organic pollutants may not be appropriate for describing the interception of MPs by leaves. Here, we performed a 7-day exploration of the interception of MPs by leaves in downtown Nanning. The abundances and characteristics of leaf-intercepted MPs showed dramatic diurnal fluctuations and interspecies differences (conifers > arbors > shrubs). The fluctuation (Coefficient of Variation (CV) = 0.459; abundances 0.003 ± 0.002 to 0.047 ± 0.005 n·cm-2) was even more drastic than that measured across species (CV = 0.353; 0.06 ± 0.01 to 0.40 ± 0.04 n·cm-2). Further analysis using partial least-squares path modeling demonstrated that stomatal variation and divergence largely dominated diurnal fluctuations and interspecies differences in microplastic interception by leaves, respectively. Our results highlight that the leaf-intercepted MPs is characterized by dynamic fluctuations rather than static equilibrium and reveal the important regulatory roles played by leaf micromorphological structures in intercepting MPs, thus enhancing our understanding of the interactions between terrestrial plants and airborne pollution.

Spatiotemporal response of water quality in fragmented mangroves to anthropogenic activities and recommendations for restoration

Mangroves have received substantial attention for their pivotal role as ecological barriers between land and sea, owing to their capacity to effectively capture considerable quantities of terrestrial pollutants. Mangrove fragmentation has been a widespread global trend. There is limited information on the water quality status of these small scattered mangrove patches in coastal sub-developed areas, coupled with a paucity of efficient and intuitive assessment methodologies. To address this gap, the Water Quality Index (WQI) was introduced to evaluate the spatiotemporal characteristics of mangrove water quality. The major sources of pollution and anthropogenic activities that affect mangrove water quality were identified. The results revealed an average WQI value of 44.1 ± 13.3 for mangrove patches, consistently indicating a "low" water quality classification throughout all seasons. Both the size and natural conditions impact the water quality of mangroves. The large artificial patch (WQI: 56.4 ± 7.61) and the natural patch (WQI: 46.6 ± 13.6) exhibited relatively superior water quality, while the WQI value of a size-equivalent artificial patch compared with the natural patch is 38.6 ± 11.8. Aquaculture was the primary human activity that adversely affected the water quality of mangroves, and the potential sources of pollution were rainfall runoff and river discharge. These findings elucidate the unfavorable water quality characteristics and dominant pollution of fragmented mangroves, and validate the applicability of the WQI method for long-term evaluation of the water quality in mangrove patches. This study provides a basis for decision-making in water quality assessment and management of coastal wetlands and marine ecosystems. Scientific guidance to the management for mangrove protection and restoration was offered, such as regulating aquaculture activities, controlling non-point source pollution, implementing mangrove reforestation by using native species in historical mangrove sites.

Distinct microplastics abundance variation in root-associated sediments revealed the underestimation of mangrove microplastics pollution

Mangrove sediment is acknowledged as the critical sink of microplastics (MPs). However, the potential effect of mangrove root systems on the MPs migration in sediment remains largely unknown. Here, our study characterized the spatial distribution of MPs trapped in root hair, rhizosphere, and non-rhizosphere zones, and analyzed their correlations with physicochemical properties of sediments. The significantly increased MPs abundances toward root systems shed light on the distinct effect on the migration of MPs exerted by mangrove root systems. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis revealed that pore water content and pH influenced the abundances of different MP characteristics (shape, color, size, and type) and further promoted the accumulation of MPs toward the root systems. In different mangrove areas from landward to seaward, other sediment properties (median grain size, clay content, and salinity) also controlled MP distribution. Additionally, smaller-sized MPs (<1000 μm) were more easily transported to the root systems. Our study emphasizes the importance of considering root systems effect when investigating the mechanisms of MPs distribution and migration in mangrove sediments.

Selective enrichments for color microplastics loading of marine lipophilic phycotoxins

Microplastics (MPs) and marine lipophilic phycotoxins (MLPs) are two classes of emerging contaminants. Together, they may exacerbate the negative impacts on nearshore marine ecosystems. Herein, the loading of 14 representative MLPs, closely related to toxin-producing algae, on MPs and their relations with colorful MPs have been explored for the first time based on both field and lab data. The objectives of our study are to explore the roles of multiple factors (waterborne MLPs and MP characteristics) in the loading of MLPs by MPs with the applications of various statistical means, and to further explore the role of the color of MP in the loading of specific MLPs through lab simulation experiments. Our results demonstrated that MPs color determined the loading of some specific MLPs on MPs and green MPs can load much more than other colorful fractions (p < 0.05). These interesting phenomena illustrated that the color effects on the loading processes of MLPs on MPs are a dynamic process, and it can be well explained by the shading effect of MP color, which may affect the growth and metabolism of the attached toxic-producing algae on MPs and hence the production of specific MLPs. Furthermore, loading of MLPs on MPs can be considered as the comprehensive physicochemical and biological processes. Our results caution us that special attention should be paid to explore the real-time dynamic color shading effects on all kinds of bio-secreted contaminants loading on MPs, and highlight the necessary to comprehensive investigate the interaction between biota, organic contaminants and MPs.

Microplastic in mangroves: A worldwide review of contamination in biotic and abiotic matrices

This review presents the spatial distribution (where) and the methods applied (how) in assessing Microplastics (MPs) contamination in sediments, water, and organisms in mangrove areas. We analyzed 53 articles on MPs in Asia, America, and Africa and produced by 359 authors, although very localized, lacking wide-scale coverage of mangrove coasts around the world. The results showed that most of studies provided MP's bulk characteristics (type, size, color, form), along with global gross reserves of MPs in the mangrove compartments. Investigations in mangrove areas are still relatively limited. Therefore, for future research, it is relevant to enhance spatial and temporal sampling of MP contamination and to establish standardized protocols to enable effective comparisons between mangrove areas, rivers, beaches, and coastal seas. In addition, it is crucial to investigate the role of MPs as carriers or vectors of other pollutants.

Microplastics leaving a trace in mangrove sediments ever since they were first manufactured: A study from Indonesia mangroves

Mangrove environments have been well recognized as marine litter traps. However, it is unclear whether mangrove sediments sink microplastics more effectively than other marine sediments due to active sedimentation. Furthermore, microplastics archives in mangrove sediments may provide quantitative data on the impact of human activities on environmental pollution throughout history. Microplastic abundance varied markedly between high and low anthropogenic activities. Both mangrove and adjacent mudflats sediments act as microplastic sequesters, despite having similar microplastic abundances and depth profiles. The decreasing trend of microplastics was observed until the sediment layers dated to the first-time plastic was manufactured in Indonesia, in the early 1950s, but microplastics remained present beneath those layers, indicating the downward movements. This discovery highlighted the significance of mangrove sediments as microplastic sinks. More research is needed to understand the mechanisms of microplastic deposition in sediments, as well as their fate and potential impact on mangrove sediment dwellers.

Microplastics in water from the confluence of tropical rivers: Overall review and a case study in Paraiba do Sul River basin

Rivers are known for carrying out a fundamental role in the transportation of human debris from continental areas to the marine environment and have been identified as hotspots for plastic pollution. We characterized microplastics (MPs) along confluence areas in the Paraíba do Sul River basin, the biggest river in southeastern Brazil. This water body crosses highly industrialized areas, with the highest population density, and the major water demand in South America. Considering the important ecological function of this extensive watershed and the implications of MP pollution, we evaluate the spatial variation of MP concentration in the confluence areas and upstream from the confluence. Samples were taken from the superficial layer of the water column in February and June 2022, using manta net with 300 μm mesh size. A total of 19 categories and 2870 plastic particles were determined. The confluences areas of rivers showed the highest concentration of MPs, highlighting the confluences of the Paraiba do Sul and Muriaé rivers (0.71 ± 0.25 MP/m3), followed by Paraíba do Sul and Dois Rios rivers (0.42 ± 0.23 MP/m3) and Paraíba do Sul and Pomba rivers (0.38 ± 0.14 MP/m3). Black fibers were the main category, followed by blue fibers and blue fragments. The MPs in the surface waters of Paraíba do Sul River is significantly influenced by the sampling points spatiality. This result corroborates other studies around the world and reinforces the argument that affluents are important sources for the introduction of MPs in larger rivers. Nevertheless, our results provide a better understanding of the different contributing factors and occurrence of MPs in river basins.

Seasonal variation in plastic litter pollution in mangroves from two remote tropical estuaries of the Colombian Pacific

Mangroves in estuaries are highly vulnerable to the impacts of plastic litter pollution, because their location at river mouths and the high capacity of mangrove trees to trap plastic items. Here, we present new results on the abundance and characteristics of plastic litter during high and low rainfall seasons in mangrove waters and sediments of the Saija and Timbiqui River estuaries in the Colombian Pacific. In both estuaries, microplastics were the most common size (50-100 %), followed by mesoplastics (13-42 %) and macroplastics (0-8 %). Total abundances of plastic litter were higher during the high rainfall season (0.17-0.53 items/m-3 in surface waters and 764-832 items/m-2 in sediments), with a moderately positive relationship between plastic abundances recorded in both environmental matrices. The most common microplastics were foams and fragments. Continuous research and monitoring are required for a better understanding and management of these ecosystems and their threats.

First evidence of meso- and microplastics on the mangrove leaves ingested by herbivorous snails and induced transcriptional responses

Although evidence suggests the ubiquity of meso- and microplastics (MMPs) in mangrove forests, our knowledge of their bioavailability and risk on mangrove leaves is scarce. Here, we investigated MMP contamination concerning submerged mangrove leaves and herbivorous snails that mainly feed on them from the four mangrove forests located in Beibu Gulf, Guangxi Province, China. Results showed that the MMP abundance on the mangrove leaves ranged from 0.01 ± 0.00 to 0.42 ± 0.15 items cm^-2, while it ranged from 0.33 ± 0.21 to 6.20 ± 2.91 items individual^-1 in the snails. There were significant positive correlations between snails and leaves regarding the abundance of total MMPs and the proportions of MMPs with the same characteristics. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) that mainly derived from aquaculture rafts, accounted for a major component both on the leaves and in the snails in Shi Jiao (SJ). Both the detection frequency and percentage of larger EPS (2.00-17.50 mm) on the leaves in SJ were higher than other sites. Meanwhile, the detection frequency, abundance and percentage of larger EPS on the leaves had significant positive correlations with those of micro-EPS in the snails. These findings suggested that mangrove leaves may represent a viable pathway for MMPs to enter the herbivorous snails. Larger EPS with higher frequency of occurrence on mangrove leaves were more likely to be encountered and ingested by snail considering its opportunistic feeding behavior. In addition, 11 sensitive genes involved in the processes of metabolism, intestinal mucosal immune systems, and cellular transduction in the snails were significantly suppressed by MMP exposure, which may be potentially used as early biomarkers to indicate the biological effects of MMPs under realistic environmental conditions. Overall, this study provides novel insights into the fate, sources, and biological effects of MMPs on mangrove leaves.

Role of mangrove forest in interception of microplastics (MPs): Challenges, progress, and prospects

Mangroves receive microplastics (MPs) from terrestrial, marine and atmospheric sources, acting as a huge filter for environmental MPs between land and sea. Due to the high primary production and complex hydrodynamic conditions in mangroves, MPs are extensively intercepted in various ways while flowing through mangroves, leading to a long-standing but fiercely increasing MPs accumulation. However, current researches mainly focused on the occurrence, source and fate of MPs pollution in mangroves, ignoring the role of mangrove forests in the interception of MPs. Our study firstly demonstrates that mangrove ecosystems have significantly greater MPs interception capacity than their surrounding environments. Then, the current status of studies related to the interception of MPs in mangrove ecosystems is comprehensively reviewed, with the main focus on the interception process and mechanisms. At last, the most pressing shortcomings of current research are highlighted regarding the intercepted flux, interception mechanisms, retention time and ecological risks of MPs in mangrove ecosystems and the relevant future perspectives are provided. This review is expected to emphasize the critical role of mangrove forests in the interception of MPs and provide the foundational knowledge for evaluating the MPs interception effect of mangrove forests globally.

Vertical distribution, accumulation, and characteristics of microplastics in mangrove sediment in China

Mangroves in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide are recognized as important sinks for microplastics (MPs). However, recent studies have focused on surface sediments, and in China, the vertical distribution and characteristics of MPs in mangrove sediments remain poorly understood. In this study, sediment cores of 100 cm depth were collected from six representative mangroves in China to investigate MPs via chronological analysis. Futian had the highest abundance of MPs (0-3123 n/kg), followed by Dongfang, Yunxiao, Zhanjiang, Dongzhaigang and Fangchenggang. The earliest MPs occurring in mangroves were dated back to 1955, and their abundance increased exponentially from bottom to surface sediments. MPs were mainly white in color, fiber-shaped, 1000-5000 μm in size, and of polypropylene/polyethylene polymer types. Furthermore, the MPs in the urban mangrove also showed a higher diversity in color. The results showed that the MP stocks in the urbanized Futian mangrove reached 1828 mg/m³, an order of magnitude higher than in other areas (251 ± 180 mg/m³), contributing to 0.0057 % of the carbon storage of the sediment. The abundance of MPs in mangrove sediments is expected to increase by 2.38-9.54 times by 2030, and therefore deserve further attention.

Plastic pollution of four understudied marine ecosystems: a review of mangroves, seagrass meadows, the Arctic Ocean and the deep seafloor

Plastic pollution is now a worldwide phenomenon affecting all marine ecosystems, but some ecosystems and regions remain understudied. Here, we review the presence and impacts of macroplastics and microplastics for four such ecosystems: mangroves, seagrass meadows, the Arctic Ocean and the deep seafloor. Plastic production has grown steadily, and thus the impact on species and ecosystems has increased, too. The accumulated evidence also indicates that plastic pollution is an additional and increasing stressor to these already ecosystems and many of the species living in them. However, laboratory or field studies, which provide strong correlational or experimental evidence of ecological harm due to plastic pollution remain scarce or absent for these ecosystems. Based on these findings, we give some research recommendations for the future.

Riverine microplastics derived from mulch film in Hainan Island: Occurrence, source and fate

Mulch film (MF) residues is an important source of microplastics (MPs) in farmland, but its transportation risk to the wider environment was still unknown. Some researches have pursued the sources of MPs found in exorheic rivers. Even so, a systematic study depicting the occurrence, source and fate of microplastics derived from mulch films (MPMF), the crucial component of MPs in farmlands, in exorheic rivers still lacking. Here, the combination of UV-Vis Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to identify the full-size MPMF (1-5000 μm) in field sediment samples collected by single-diagonal systematic sampling. This study verified that MPMF, a polyethylene-matrix composite doped with additives, contributed a considerable part of MPs detected in upstream farmland soil and riverine sediments, and even had an abundance of 38 ± 11 items/kg to 82 ± 15 items/kg, accounting for 9.0%-13.7% of the total MPs in estuary sediments. Notably, upstream farmland was identified to the main source of the riverine MPMF by partial least square path modeling (PLS-PM), contributing to 94.7% of MPMF in riverside sediments and 85.0% of MPMF in estuary sediments. Our study first demonstrates that MPMF constitutes a non-negligible component of MPs in estuarine sediments and underlines the urgency of strengthening the management of MPs pollution in drainage areas with a high agricultural intensity.

Distribution and retention of microplastics in plantation mangrove forest sediments

Microplastics (MPs) in ocean tides can be effectively intercepted by mangroves, especially sediments, which are considered to be effective sinks. However, the retention of plantation mangrove forests on MPs is still unclear. In this study, the spatial distribution and its implication factors of MPs in surface sediments of plantation mangrove forests were investigated for the first time. In plantation forests, MPs were detected with abundances ranging from 67 ± 21 to 203 ± 25 items/kg, and plantation forests were significantly lower than natural forests at the CJ sampling site (p < 0.05). Plantation forests had fewer fibrous MPs than natural forests (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the MPs abundance showed strong linear relationships with the sand content (p = 0.002, R² = 0.86) and Aegiceras corniculata biomass (p = 0.001, R² = 0.84). Partial least squares path modeling analysis (PLS-PM) indicated that these two factors influenced MPs abundance by retaining MPs with fibrous, fragmented, denser and larger-sized characteristics. Our results revealed the differences in MPs abundance and characteristics between plantation and natural mangrove forests, and it is necessary to monitor MPs pollution to provide significant guidance for the restoration of constructed wetlands.

Seasonal heterogeneity and a link to precipitation in the release of microplastic during COVID-19 outbreak from the Greater Jakarta area to Jakarta Bay, Indonesia

To reduce microplastic contamination in the environment, we need to better understand its sources and transit, especially from land to sea. This study examines microplastic contamination in Jakarta's nine river outlets. Microplastics were found in all sampling intervals and areas, ranging from 4.29 to 23.49 particles m^-3. The trend of microplastic contamination tends to increase as the anthropogenic activity towards Jakarta Bay from the eastern side of the bay. Our study found a link between rainfall and the abundance of microplastic particles in all river outlets studied. This investigation found polyethylene, polystyrene, and polypropylene in large proportion due to their widespread use in normal daily life and industrial applications. Our research observed an increase in microplastic fibers made of polypropylene over time. We suspect a relationship between COVID-19 PPE waste and microplastic shift in our study area. More research is needed to establish how and where microplastics enter rivers.
