Effective utilization of discarded reverse osmosis post-carbon for adsorption of dyes from wastewater

A pH-dependent and charge selective covalent organic framework for removal of dyes from aqueous solutions

A novel imine-linked COF is synthesized by the condensation of 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TAPT) and 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyisophthalaldehyde (HMIPA) under solvothermal conditions. This COF adsorbs preferentially the neutral dye Neutral Red (NR) over the positively charged dye Methylene Blue (MB) at pH 7, and the negatively charged Methyl Orange (MO) over the positively charged Methylene Blue (MB) at pH 3. The maximum adsorption capacities (qe) obtained within very short times (11-60 min) under optimized conditions were 108, 185 and 429 mg.g-1 for the MB, MO, and NR dyes, respectively. These adsorptions obey the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics. The prepared TAPT-HMIPA-COF is used successfully for the removal of the dyes from real water and treated wastewater samples. The adsorption data, BET, FTIR, and zeta potential measurements show that the electrostatic, π-π stacking and hydrogen bond interactions are responsible for the adsorption of organic dyes on the surface of the prepared COF. Due to recyclability, high capacity and efficiency for the adsorption of positive, negative and neutral organic dyes, this COF can be considered promising for simultaneous removal of various dyes from aqueous solutions at adjusted pHs.

Bimetal Cu/Ni-BTC@SiO2 metal-organic framework as high performance photocatalyst for degradation of azo dyes under visible light irradiation

There has been significant attention on the efficient degradation of pollutants in wastewater using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) photocatalytic methods over the past decade. Herein, we examined the elimination of two different types of water-contaminating dyes, specifically cationic dye methylene blue (MB) and anionic dye methyl orange (MO), through the application of bimetal Cu/Ni-BTC@SiO2 MOF as high performance photocatalyst. The bimetal Cu/Ni-BTC@SiO2 photocatalyst was synthesized and characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, TGA, BET, DRS, and VSM techniques. The examination of the impact of different operational factors on the elimination of pollutants involved a comprehensive analysis of variables including the photocatalyst type, initial pollutant concentration, quantity of photocatalyst, and pH levels. The highest removal efficiency for MO and MB dyes by the photocatalyst was found to be 98 and 71%, respectively, within 60 min. In the fifth reaction stage, degradation efficiency for MO and MB was 76 and 56% respectively. Kinetic investigations demonstrated that, in the context of the uptake of MB and MO dyes, the interparticle diffusion, and pseudo-second-order models emerged as possessing the most robust correlation coefficients with the experimental data, registering values of 0.988 and 0.961, respectively. The examination of isotherms reveals that the isotherm models proposed by BET, and Anderson (V) demonstrate the highest level of conformity with the empirical data for the decomposition of MB and MO dyes, correspondingly. The TOC levels decreased significantly from 51 to 14 and 47 to 3 mg/L for MB and MO dyes, indicating the effective mineralization process using Cu/Ni-BTC@SiO2.

Structural properties and adsorption performance relationship towards three categories of lignin and their derived biochar

The growing interest in utilizing lignin for dye removal has gained momentum, but there is limited information on the intricate relationship between lignin structural characteristics and adsorption efficacy, especially for its biochar derivatives. This study focused on three types of lignin and their corresponding biochar derivatives. Among them, ZnCl2-activated acidic/alkali densified lignin preparation of lignin-derived active carbon exhibited superior adsorption performance, achieving 526.32 mg/g for methylene blue and 2156.77 mg/g for congo red. Its exceptional adsorption capacity was attributed to its unique structural properties, including low alkyl and O-alkyl group content and high aromatic carbon levels. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms adhered to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model, signifying a spontaneous process. Intriguingly, lignin-derived active carbon also demonstrated remarkable recovery capabilities. These findings provide valuable insights into the impact of structural attributes on lignin and its biochar's adsorption performance.

Effective removal of malachite green oxalate from aqueous solution using Newbouldia laevis husk/MWCNTs nanocomposite: equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics

The discharge of colored effluent into water bodies is a big concern; hence, the current work was designed to fabricate a superior nanocomposite (NBM) using the Newbouldia laevis husk (NB) and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) for the adsorption of malachite green oxalate (MGO). Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface analysis was used to assess the specific surface area of NB (0.7699 m2 g-1) and NBM (94.006 m2 g-1). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to determine the chemical moieties on the surface of the adsorbent. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to analyze the surface morphology and the thermal behavior of the adsorbents. Essential factors of the adsorption process were investigated, and it was revealed that pH 6.0, adsorbent dose of 0.05 g, contact time 80 min, concentration of 100 mg dm-3 and maximum adsorption capacity of 35.78 mg g-1 (NB) and 69.97 mg g-1 (NBM) were the optimal parameters. The NB and NBM adsorption processes followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The exothermic and endothermic adsorptive processes were noticed to be the best descriptions of MGO elimination by NB and NBM, respectively. The uptake of MGO by NB and NBM was best described by models of Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. Besides, NBM demonstrated uptake efficiency that is >80% after the fourth adsorption/desorption cycle. As a result, NBM has a wide range of possible uses in environmental remediation.

Rice husk hydrochar prepared by hydrochloric acid assisted hydrothermal carbonization for levofloxacin removal in bioretention columns

Hydrochars are promising adsorbents in pollutant removal for water treatment. Herein, hydrochloric acid (HCl) co-hydrothermally treated hydrochars were prepared from rice husk biomass at 180 °C via a one-step hydrothermal method. Adsorption behaviors of levofloxacin (LVX) on hydrochars were evaluated. The specific surface area and pore volume of the hydrochar synthesized in 5 mol/L HCl (5H-HC) were almost 17 and 8 times of untreated hydrochar, respectively. The 5H-HC sample exhibited the highest LVX adsorption capability at room temperature (107 mg/g). Thermodynamic experimental results revealed that adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process. Yan model provided the best description of the breakthrough behavior of LVX in bioretention column, indicating that the adsorption on the samples involved several rate-limiting factors including diffusion and mass transfer. The results show that facile HCl co-hydrothermal carbonization of waste biomass can produce novel hydrochars with high LVX adsorption ability.

Constructing mesoporous biochar derived from waste carton: Improving multi-site adsorption of dye wastewater and investigating mechanism

The development of cost-efficient biochar adsorbent with a simple preparation method is essential to constructing efficient wastewater treatment system. Here, a low-cost waste carton biochar (WCB) prepared by a simple two-step carbonization was applied in efficiently removing Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous environment. The maximum ability of WCB for RhB adsorption was 222 mg/g, 6 and 10 times higher than both of rice straw biochar (RSB) and broadbean shell biochar (BSB), respectively. It was mainly ascribed to the mesopore structure (3.0-20.4 nm) of WCB possessing more spatial sites compared to RSB (2.2 nm) and BSB (2.4 nm) for RhB (1.4 nm✕1.1 nm✕0.6 nm) adsorption. Furthermore, external mass transfer (EMT) controlled mass transfer resistance (MTR) of the RhB sorption process by WCB which was fitted with the Langmuir model well. Meanwhile, the adsorption process was dominated by physisorption through van der Waals forces and π-π interactions. A mixture of three dyes in river water was well removed by using WCB. This work provides a straightforward method of preparing mesoporous biochar derived from waste carton with high-adsorption capacity for dye wastewater treatment.

Synergistic mechanisms for the superior sorptive removal of aquatic pollutants via functionalized biochar-clay composite

This study investigated the successful synthesis of functionalized algal biochar-clay composite (FBKC). Subsequently, the sorption performance of FBKC towards norfloxacin (NFX) antibiotic and crystal violet dye (CVD) from water was extensively assessed in both batch and continuous flow systems. A series of characterization techniques were carried out for FBKC and the utilized precursors, indicating that the surface area of FBKC was increased thirty-fold with a well-developed pore structure compared to the original precursors. FBKC demonstrated a maximum sorption capacity of 192.80 and 281.24 mg/g for NFX and CVD, respectively. The suited fitting of the experimental data to Freundlich and Clark models suggested multi-layer sorption of NFX/CVD molecules. The mechanistic studies of NFX/CVD sorption onto FBKC unveiled multiple mechanisms, including π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, and surface/pore filling effect. The estimated cost of 5.72 €/kg and superior sorption capacity makes FBKC an efficient low-cost sorbent for emergent water pollutants.

Adsorption of methyl orange by porous membranes prepared from deep eutectic supramolecular polymer-modified chitosan

The fabrication of an adsorbent with excellent performance has been a focus of attention because of the toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of methyl orange (MO)-containing wastewater discharged from the textile, tannery and pharmaceutical industries. In this study, chitosan (CS) membranes were modified with a deep eutectic supramolecular polymer (DESP), and adsorbent membranes with porous structures were prepared with polyethylene glycol (PEG). Microstructural characterization of the CS-DESP-PEG composite membranes with FT-IR, XRD and SEM showed that the membranes had amorphous crystalline structures and that hydrogen bonding interactions weakened the crystallinity and formed loose porous structures. Optimization of the chitosan to β-cyclodextrin ratio, pH, PEG proportion, MO concentration and adsorbent dose significantly improved the adsorption efficiencies of the membranes. The adsorption behaviours of the membranes were fit with pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model. Regeneration experiments showed that the membranes were reusable multiple times and maintained good adsorption capacities.

Comprehensive adsorption and spectroscopic studies on the interaction of magnetic biochar from black wattle sawdust with beta-blocker metoprolol

The rise of contaminants of emerging concern in water-resources due to human activities has driven research toward wastewater treatment, specifically adsorption. The utilization of woody biomass for biochar production in adsorption has shown promise due to its high availability. This study shows the preparation of magnetic biochars (MB) from waste black wattle sawdust, utilizing ZnCl2 and NiCl2 (proportions: 1:0.5:0.5 = MB-0.5 and 1:1:1 = MB-1) as activating and magnetic agents. Synthesized via microwave-assisted-pyrolysis, MB boasts a high surface area (up to 765 m2.g-1) and functional groups, enhancing metoprolol medicine adsorption. Nonlinear kinetic and isothermal models were tested; the Avrami fractional-order kinetic model and Liu's isothermal model provided the best fits for experimental data. Thermodynamics and spectroscopic studies revealed spontaneous and exothermic adsorption processes, with physisorption magnitude and dominance of hydrogen-bond and π-π-interactions. MB can be easily extracted from an aqueous medium using magnetic fields, while adsorption capacity could be regenerated through green solvent elution.

Selective adsorption of organic dyes from aqueous environment using fermented maize extract-enhanced graphene oxide-durian shell derived activated carbon composite

A secure aquatic environment is essential for both aquatic and terrestrial life. However, rising populations and the industrial revolution have had a significant impact on the quality of the water environment. Despite the implementation of strong and adapted environmental policies for water treatment worldwide, the issue of organic dyes in wastewater remains challenging. Thus, this study aimed to develop an efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable material to treat methylene blue (MB) in an aqueous environment. In this research, maize extract solution (MES) was utilized as a green cross-linker to induce precipitation, conjugation, and enhance the adsorption performance of graphene oxide (GO) cross-linked with durian shell activated carbon (DSAC), resulting in the formation of a GO@DSAC composite. The composite was investigated for its adsorptive performance toward MB in aqueous media. The physicochemical characterization demonstrated that the cross-linking method significantly influenced the porous structure and surface chemistry of GO@DSAC. BET analysis revealed that the GO@DSAC exhibited dominant mesopores with a surface area of 803.67 m2/g. EDX and XPS measurements confirmed the successful cross-linking of GO with DSAC. The adsorption experiments were well described by the Harkin-Jura model and they followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 666.67 mg/g at 318 K. Thermodynamic evaluation indicated a spontaneous, feasible, and endothermic in nature. Regenerability and reusability investigations demonstrated that the GO@DSAC composite could be reused for up to 10 desorption-adsorption cycles with a removal efficiency of 81.78%. The selective adsorptive performance of GO@DSAC was examined in a binary system containing Rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene orange (MO). The results showed a separation efficiency (α) of 98.89% for MB/MO and 93.66% for MB/RhB mixtures, underscoring outstanding separation capabilities of the GO@DSAC composite. Overall, the GO@DSAC composite displayed promising potential for the effective removal of cationic dyes from wastewater.
