Abstract
OBJECTIVES A low handgrip strength (HGS) is a significant risk factor for multiple diseases. However, most relevant studies investigate the complications of a low HGS, while the risk potential of causative factors of low HGS remain poorly characterized. METHODS We investigated the potentials of quality of life, depression, dyslipidaemia, diabetes mellitus, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, frailty, and difficulties performing daily activities in predicting low HGS (≤ 27 kg for men, ≤ 16 kg for women) in European older adults aged 50 or above from 15 countries (n = 42,183). All data was collected from four successive waves of survey of health, ageing, and retirement in Europe (SHARE) conducted between 2013 and 2020. Logistic models are applied, and estimated effects are presented as odds ratios and probabilities. RESULTS Collectively, 3016 participants (men; n = 1395; 7.38%, women; n = 1621, 6.97%) developed low HGS during the 6.5 years study period. After adjusting for covariables, we identified an advancing age (1.6-48.1% points higher risk of low HGS), male gender (1.0%-point higher risk of low HGS), lower quality of life (1.6%-point higher), and stroke (1.5%-points) as significant risk factors for low HGS. We also found a dose-dependent association of Euro-D depression scores with the risk of low HGS, as the higher scores were associated with between 0.6- and 2.3%-points higher risk of developing low HGS than participants without depression. Among physical performance indicators, difficulty climbing stairs (2.0%-points higher low HGS risk) or rising from a chair (0.7%-points) were significantly associated with developing low HGS. Lastly, frailty (0.9%-points higher risk of low HGS) and the fear of falling down (1.6%-points higher risk) also increased the risk of developing low HGS. CONCLUSION Altogether, we report several risk factors for developing low HGS. Our observations may help evaluating and monitoring high-risk population for developing low HGS in pre-clinical settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia has been identified as a risk factor for perioperative adverse events. Several studies have shown that tomographic assessment of muscle mass can be an appropriate indicator of sarcopenia associated with morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study was to determine the association between height-adjusted area of the pectoral and erector spinae muscles (haPMA and haESA) and perioperative morbidity and mortality in thoracic surgery. METHODS Retrospective cohort study. Measurement of muscle areas was performed by tomography. The outcomes were 30-day mortality and postoperative morbidity. The discriminative capacity of the muscle areas was evaluated with an analysis of ROC curves and the Youden index was used to establish a cut-off point. The raw morbidity and mortality risk was determined and adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS A total of 509 patients taken to thoracic surgery were included. The incidence of 30-day mortality was 7.3%. An association was found between muscle areas and 30-day mortality and pneumonia, with adequate discriminative power for mortality (AUC 0.68 for haPMA and 0.67 for haESA). An haPMA less than 10 and haESA less than 8.5 cm2/m2 were identified as a risk factor for 30-day mortality with an adjusted OR of 2.34 (95%CI 1.03-5.15) and 2.22 (95%CI 1.10-6.04) respectively. CONCLUSIONS Sarcopenia, defined as low muscle area in the pectoral and erector spinae muscles, is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing thoracic surgery.

Abstract
Background Although pulmonary embolism (PE) and sarcopenia are common diseases, only a few studies have assessed the impact of sarcopenia in PE on usage of reperfusion treatments in PE. Methods All hospitalizations of PE patients aged ≥75 years 2005-2020 in Germany were included in this study and stratified for sarcopenia. Impact of sarcopenia on treatment procedures and adverse in-hospital events were investigated. Results Overall, 576,364 hospitalizations of PE patients aged ≥75 years (median age 81.0 [78.0-85.0] years; 63.3 % females) were diagnosed in Germany during the observational period 2005-2020. Among these, 2357 (0.4 %) were coded with sarcopenia. PE patients with sarcopenia were in median 2 years older (83.0 [79.0-87.0] vs. 81.0 [78.0-85.0] years, P<0.001) and showed an aggravated comorbidity-profile (Charlson Comorbidity Index 7.00 [5.00-9.00] vs. 6.00 [4.00-7.00], P<0.001). Although signs of hemodynamic compromise such as shock (5.2 % vs. 4.1 %, P=0.005) and tachycardia (4.1 % vs. 2.8 %, P<0.001) were more prevalent in sarcopenic PE patients, systemic thrombolysis (1.9 % vs. 3.5 %, P<0.001) was less often used in these patients. Sarcopenia was independently related to an underuse of systemic thrombolysis (OR 0.537 [95 %CI 0.398-0.725], P<0.001). This underuse might driven by higher rates of bleeding events (gastro-intestinal bleeding: 3.1 % vs. 1.9 %, P<0.001, necessity of transfusion of blood constituents: 18.9 % vs. 11.3 %, P<0.001), but also stroke (5.6 % vs. 3.3 %, P<0.001). Conclusions Sarcopenia represents a widely overlooked condition in PE patients. Although sarcopenic PE patients were more often afflicted by hemodynamic compromise, systemic thrombolysis was less often administered. This underuse might be caused by contraindications like bleeding events and stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the known association between chronic inflammation and reduced muscle mass, there is a gap in research regarding the association between the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and sarcopenic obesity (SO). This study aims to assess the relationship between SII and SO in middle-aged and elderly adults and the mediating role of triglyceride-glucose index (TyG). METHODS This cross-sectional study involved 2,719 participants aged 45-90 years who underwent health check-ups. SO was evaluated by combining sarcopenia [assessed by handgrip strength and appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI)] with obesity (determined by body fat percentage). Association between SII and SO, sarcopenia, and obesity in middle-aged and elderly individuals was examined using multivariable logistic regression, restricted cubic spline analysis, and subgroup analysis. Bidirectional mediation analysis was conducted to determine the direct and indirect effects through SII and TyG. RESULTS The study included 2,719 participants, of which 228 had SO (8.4%). SO prevalence increased as the SII quartiles rose (Pfor trend <0.001). SII (per SD increase) had a significantly positive association with SO in both middle-aged individuals (OR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.43 ~ 1.99) and older adults (OR = 2.52, 95% CI: 1.68 ~ 3.77). The relationship between SII and SO was found to be non-linear (Pnonlinear<0.05). In addition, SII showed a strong negative relationship with both handgrip strength and ASMI across all participants. In subgroup analysis, SII was still shown to significantly increase the risk of SO in all subgroups by gender, body mass index, waist circumference, smoking, drinking, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia. TyG was found to mediate 21.36%, 11.78%, and 9.94% of the associations between SII and SO, sarcopenia, and obesity, respectively. SII had no mediation effect on the association between TyG and SO, sarcopenia, and obesity (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Elevated levels of SII were associated with an increased risk of SO in middle-aged and elderly adults, especially in the elderly population, and elevated TyG levels played a role in this relationship.

Abstract
Introduction Older patients typically face elevated mortality rates and greater medical resource utilization during hospitalizations compared to their younger counterparts. Sarcopenia, serving as a prognostic indicator, is related to disability, diminished quality of life, and increased mortality. The SARC-F questionnaire, known for its cost-effectiveness, offers a valuable means of assessing sarcopenia. This study aims to explore the association between SARC-F scores and risk of adverse outcomes in elderly patients with cardiovascular disease at a Ho Chi Minh City hospital. Method Participants aged 60 and above, admitted to the Department of Cardiology - Interventional and Cardiovascular Emergency of Thong Nhat Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City from November 2021 to June 2022, were recruited for the prospective, single-center study. The prognostic outcomes included all-cause death and the initial occurrence of emergency re-hospitalization within 6 months' post-discharge. The Kaplan-Meier analysis compared the overall survival rates between different SARC-F score groups. Results The study enrolled 285 patients with a median age of 74 (67, 81). During a 6-month follow-up period, there were 14 cases of mortality. A SARC-F score of 4 or higher was significantly associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, with HR of 2.02 (95% CI: 1.39-2.92, p < 0.001), and higher incidence of re-hospitalization events with RR of 1.66 (95% CI: 1.06 to 2.59, p = 0.026). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated a notably higher mortality rate in the patients with high SARC-F scores (p < 0.001). Conclusion In elderly patients with cardiovascular disease, the SARC-F questionnaire could serve as a simple and cost-effective method for detecting mortality and the risk of re-hospitalization.

Abstract
Background In the continually aging United States population, the number of patients with sarcopenia who undergo shoulder arthroplasty may concomitantly increase. This retrospective cohort study aims to evaluate the rates of short-term implant-related and medical complications following shoulder arthroplasty in patients with and without a recent diagnosis of sarcopenia. Methods An exact 1:3 matched analysis of 4177 patients was performed using the PearlDiver database. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare complications, Kaplan-Meier failure analysis was used to compare the cumulative hospital readmission rates. Two-sample T-testing was used to compare the 90-day cost of care. Results Sarcopenic patients were significantly more likely to experience postoperative shoulder instability (odds ratio (OR) = 2.32, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.21-4.39) and periprosthetic infection (OR = 3.83, 95% CI, 1.74-8.67) within 1 year of their arthroplasty. Sarcopenic patients were at 25% and 41% greater risk of emergency department presentation and hospital readmission 1-year post-arthroplasty, respectively. Ninty-day total costs were greater among sarcopenics ($16 112.23 vs. 10 679.58, p < 0.001). Conclusion These results are important for orthopaedic surgeons counselling patients with a low muscle mass on the potential for increased complications after undergoing a total shoulder arthroplasty procedure.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle, comprising a significant proportion (40 to 50 percent) of total body weight in humans, plays a critical role in maintaining normal physiological conditions. Muscle atrophy occurs when the rate of protein degradation exceeds protein synthesis. Sarcopenia refers to age-related muscle atrophy, while cachexia represents a more complex form of muscle wasting associated with various diseases such as cancer, heart failure, and AIDS. Recent research has highlighted the involvement of signaling pathways, including IGF1-Akt-mTOR, MuRF1-MAFbx, and FOXO, in regulating the delicate balance between muscle protein synthesis and breakdown. Myostatin, a member of the TGF-β superfamily, negatively regulates muscle growth and promotes muscle atrophy by activating Smad2 and Smad3. It also interacts with other signaling pathways in cachexia and sarcopenia. Inhibition of myostatin has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach for sarcopenia and cachexia. Additionally, other TGF-β family members, such as TGF-β1, activin A, and GDF11, have been implicated in the regulation of skeletal muscle mass. Furthermore, myostatin cooperates with these family members to impair muscle differentiation and contribute to muscle loss. This review provides an overview of the significance of myostatin and other TGF-β signaling pathway members in muscular dystrophy, sarcopenia, and cachexia. It also discusses potential novel therapeutic strategies targeting myostatin and TGF-β signaling for the treatment of muscle atrophy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An age-dependent normative values of calf circumference (CC) has been recently proposed as an accessible proxy for muscle mass. However, its usefulness to estimate sarcopenia has not been assessed. The objectives of the present study were to determine if the substitution of the classical way to assess muscle mass by these values have enough diagnostic accuracy and prognostic value among older adults living in the community. METHODS Data from the Toledo Study of Healthy Ageing (TSHA) were used. CC was measured using an anthropometric tape. We used two age-groups CC cut-off points: the TSHA CC median and the one proposed in the Longevity Check-up 7+ (Lookup 7+) project. Sarcopenia was defined based on the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2), the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), and FNIH criteria standardized for our population (sFNIH). Frailty (according to the Frailty Phenotype and the Frailty Trait Scale-5) and disability (Katz index) were assessed at baseline and follow-up. Mortality and first hospitalization were also recorded. Logistic (incident frailty and worsening disability) and Cox (mortality and hospitalization) regressions were performed. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed through Kappa index, AUCs, positive and negative predictive values. Predictive ability was assessed through AUCs and integrated AUCs (IAUCs). RESULTS 1531 participants (74.8 ± 5.8 years; 45.6% men) were included in the analysis. Prevalence rates of sarcopenia were 22.7% (sFNIH), 15.0% (FNIH), and 13.9% (EWGSOP2). Using TSHA-based cut-points of CC, the prevalence of sarcopenia was 16.8% (sFNIH), 11.0% (FNIH), and 11.5% (EWGSOP2). According to LC7+-based CC cut-off points, sarcopenia prevalence was 17.6% (sFNIH), 11.9% (FNIH), and 12.4% (EWGSOP2). CC cut-off points showed low-to-moderate agreement (Kappa Index values between 0.49 and 0.69) with appendicular lean mass for the evaluation of sarcopenia. Sarcopenia identified by Lookup 7+ and TSHA CC cut-off points was associated with the adverse events examined, with similar AUCs and IAUCs than original sarcopenia definitions, and were lost after adjustment by baseline frailty, except when the original EWGSOP2 definition was used. CONCLUSIONS Using normalized values of CC as a criteria of muscle mass shows moderate agreement with classical criteria for diagnosing sarcopenia and offer similar predictive value in community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
Ischemic colitis (IC) and sarcopenia are associated with aging and multiple comorbidities. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and predictive role of sarcopenia in patients with IC. We retrospectively analyzed 225 hospitalized patients (median age, 72 years; women, 67.1%; severe IC, 34.2%) who were diagnosed with IC between January 2007 and February 2022. Sarcopenia was defined as the skeletal muscle index at the third lumbar vertebra determined by computed tomography. It was present in 49.3% (n = 111) of the patients and was significantly associated with severe IC compared to those without sarcopenia (48.6% vs. 20.2%, P < 0.001). Sarcopenia was associated with extended hospitalization (median: 8 vs. 6 days, P < 0.001) and fasting periods (4 vs. 3 days, P = 0.004), as well as prolonged antibiotic use (9 vs. 7 days, P = 0.039). Sarcopenia was linked to a higher risk of surgery or mortality (9.0% vs. 0%, P = 0.001) and independently predicted this outcome (odds ratio [OR], 11.17; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.24‒1467.65, P = 0.027). It was prevalent among hospitalized patients with IC, potentially indicating severe IC and a worse prognosis. This underscores the importance of meticulous monitoring, immediate medical intervention, and timely surgical consideration.

Abstract
Sarcopenia may increase non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) risk, but prevalence likely varies with different diagnostic criteria. This study examined the prevalence of sarcopenia and its defining components in adults with and without NAFLD and whether it varied by the method of muscle mass assessment [bioelectrical impedance (BIA) versus dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)] and adjustment (height2 versus BMI). Adults (n = 7266) in the UK Biobank study (45-79 years) with and without NAFLD diagnosed by MRI, were included. Sarcopenia was defined by the 2018 European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People definition, with low appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) assessed by BIA and DXA and adjusted for height2 or BMI. Overall, 21% of participants had NAFLD and the sex-specific prevalence of low muscle strength (3.6-7.2%) and sarcopenia (0.1-1.4%) did not differ by NAFLD status. However, NAFLD was associated with 74% (males) and 370% (females) higher prevalence of low ASM when adjusted for BMI but an 82% (males) to 89% (females) lower prevalence when adjusted for height2 (all P < 0.05). The prevalence of impaired physical function was 40% (males, P = 0.08) to 123% (females, P < 0.001) higher in NAFLD. In middle-aged and older adults, NAFLD was not associated with a higher prevalence of low muscle strength or sarcopenia but was associated with an increased risk of impaired physical function and low muscle mass when adjusted for BMI. These findings support the use of adiposity-based adjustments when assessing low muscle mass and the assessment of physical function in NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Engagement in sport offers the potential for improved physical and psychological well-being and has been shown to be beneficial for promoting healthy aging. Opportunities for older adults to (re)engage with sport are limited by a paucity of age-appropriate introductory sports intervention programs. As such, the study evaluated the efficacy of a newly designed 8-week badminton training program (Shuttle Time for Seniors) on markers of healthy aging and the lived experiences of participation. METHODS Forty-three older adults assigned to a control (N = 20) or intervention group (N = 23) completed pre-post assessment of physical and cognitive function, self-efficacy for exercise, and well-being. Focus groups were conducted for program evaluation and to understand barriers and enablers to sustained participation. RESULTS Those in the intervention group increased upper body strength, aerobic fitness, coincidence anticipation time, and self-efficacy for exercise. Objectively improved physical and cognitive functions were corroborated by perceived benefits indicated in thematic analysis. Shuttle Time for Seniors was perceived as appropriate for the population, where the age-appropriate opportunity to participate with likeminded people of similar ability was a primary motivator to engagement. Despite willingness to continue playing, lack of badminton infrastructure was a primary barrier to continued engagement. CONCLUSION Shuttle Time for Seniors offered an important opportunity for older adults to (re)engage with badminton, where the physical and psychosocial benefits of group-based badminton improved facets important to healthy aging. Significance/Implications: Age-appropriate introductory intervention programs provide opportunity for older adults to (re)engage with sport. However, important barriers to long-term engagement need to be addressed from a whole systems perspective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the associations of sarcopenia alone, overweight or obesity, and sarcopenic overweight or obesity with COVID-19 hospitalization. METHODS Participants from the Lifelines COVID-19 cohort who were infected with COVID-19 were included in this study. Sarcopenia was defined as a relative deviation of muscle mass of ≤ -1.0 SD from the sex-specific mean 24-h urinary creatinine excretion. Overweight or obesity was defined as a body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2. Sarcopenic overweight or obesity was defined as the presence of overweight or obesity and low muscle mass. COVID-19 hospitalization was self-reported. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations of sarcopenia alone, overweight or obesity, and sarcopenic overweight or obesity with COVID-19 hospitalization. RESULTS Of the 3594 participants infected with COVID-19 and recruited in this study, 173 had been admitted to the hospital. Compared with the reference group, individuals with overweight or obesity and sarcopenic overweight or obesity were 1.78-times and 2.09-times more likely to have been hospitalized for COVID-19, respectively, whereas sarcopenia alone did not increase the risk of COVID-19 hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS In this middle-aged population, sarcopenic overweight or obesity elevated the risk of hospitalization for COVID-19 in those infected with COVID-19 more than overweight or obesity alone. These data support the relevance of sarcopenic overweight or obesity as a risk factor beyond the geriatric setting and should be considered in risk stratification in future public health and vaccination campaigns.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Sarcopenic obesity, a clinical condition coexisting with obesity and sarcopenia, is associated with a high risk of functional impairment, reduced quality of life, and increased mortality. A decline in age-related free testosterone (FT) levels has been reported to be associated with decreased muscle mass and muscle strength and increased fat mass. However, the association between low FT levels and risk of sarcopenic obesity has not been well studied. This study aimed to investigate the direct association between low FT levels and sarcopenic obesity. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study used data of 982 community-dwelling men aged 70-84 years from the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study. Sarcopenia was defined according to the criteria of the Asian Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019. Obesity was defined as a body fat mass ≥28.3%. Participants who met both sarcopenia and obesity criteria were defined as having sarcopenic obesity. Low FT levels were defined as FT levels <17.35 pmol/L according to the Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guidelines. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia, obesity, and sarcopenic obesity was significantly higher in the low-FT group than in the normal-FT group. Low FT levels were significantly associated with a higher risk of obesity (odds ratio [OR], 2.09, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11-3.92), sarcopenia (2.57, 95% CI 1.08-6.10), and sarcopenic obesity (3.66, 95% CI 1.58-8.47) compared with the healthy control group. The risk of low appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) (1.78, 95% CI 1.04-3.02) and high fat mass (1.92, 95% CI 1.12-3.31) was significantly higher in the low-FT group than in the normal-FT group. Conclusions: This study showed that low FT levels were associated with a higher risk of sarcopenic obesity. Low FT levels were mainly related to body composition parameters such as low ASMI and high fat mass.

Abstract
Individuals with mental health problems are at higher risk of musculoskeletal diseases. However, the association between low muscle mass (LMM) and anxiety symptoms remains uninvestigated. This cross-sectional study enrolled 174,262 adults (73,833 women, 100,429 men), aged 18 to 89, who completed the anxiety scale and body composition analyses. Using bio-electrical impedance analysis, skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was calculated based on appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) (kg)/height (m2). LMM was defined as SMI < 7.0 kg/m2 in men and <5.4 kg/m2 in women. Anxiety symptoms were screened using the Clinical Useful Anxiety Outcome Scale (CUXOS) with cut-off scores of 20, 30, and 40. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed. LMM prevalence was 20.17% in women, 3.86% in men (p < 0.001). The prevalence of anxiety symptoms in LMM group decreased from mild (CUXOS > 20: women, 32.74%, men, 21.17%) to moderate (CUXOS > 30: 13.34%, 7.32%), to severe anxiety symptoms (CUXOS > 40: 4.00%, 1.73%). In multivariable-adjusted models, LMM was associated with mild (aOR (95% confidence interval)), women, 1.13 (1.08-1.17); men, 1.17 (1.08-1.27)), moderate (1.17 (1.11-1.24); 1.35 (1.19-1.53) and severe anxiety symptoms (1.18 (1.07-1.3), 1.36 (1.06-1.74)), demonstrating an increased risk of ORs with escalating anxiety severity. LMM was independently associated with a higher prevalence of anxiety symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia and multimorbidity are common in older adults, and most of the available clinical studies have focused on the relationship between specialist disorders and sarcopenia, whereas fewer studies have been conducted on the relationship between sarcopenia and multimorbidity. We therefore wished to explore the relationship between the two. METHODS The study subjects were older patients (aged ≥ 65 years) who were hospitalized at the Department of Geriatrics of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between March 2016 and September 2021. Their medical records were collected. Based on the diagnostic criteria of the Asian Sarcopenia Working Group in 2019, the relationship between sarcopenia and multimorbidity was elucidated. RESULTS 1.A total of 651 older patients aged 65 years and above with 2 or more chronic diseases were investigated in this study, 46.4% were suffering from sarcopenia. 2. Analysis of the relationship between the number of chronic diseases and sarcopenia yielded that the risk of sarcopenia with 4-5 chronic diseases was 1.80 times higher than the risk of 2-3 chronic diseases (OR 1.80, 95%CI 0.29-2.50), and the risk of sarcopenia with ≥ 6 chronic diseases was 5.11 times higher than the risk of 2-3 chronic diseases (OR 5.11, 95% CI 2.97-9.08), which remained statistically significant, after adjusting for relevant factors. 3. The Charlson comorbidity index was associated with skeletal muscle mass index, handgrip strength, and 6-meter walking speed, with scores reaching 5 and above suggesting the possibility of sarcopenia. 4. After adjusting for some covariates among 14 common chronic diseases in older adults, diabetes (OR 3.20, 95% CI 2.01-5.09), cerebrovascular diseases (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.33-3.22), bone and joint diseases (OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.32-3.14), and malignant tumors (OR 2.65, 95% CI 1.17-6.55) were among those that still a risk factor for the development of sarcopenia. CONCLUSION In the hospitalized older adults, the more chronic diseases they have, the higher the prevalence of sarcopenia. When the CCI is 5, attention needs to be paid to the occurrence of sarcopenia in hospitalized older adults.

Abstract
Background Intraoperative cardiac complications are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in non-cardiac surgery. The risk of these complications increased with the average age increasing from 65. In a resource-limited setting, including our study area, the magnitude and associated factors of intraoperative cardiac complications have not been adequately investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude and associated factors of intraoperative cardiac complications among geriatric patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Methods An institutional-based multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted on 304 geriatric patients at governmental hospitals in the southern region of Ethiopia, from 20 March 2022 to 25 August 2022. Data were collected by chart review and patient interviews. Epi Data version 4.6 and SPSS version 25 were used for analysis. The variables that had association (p < 0.25) were considered for multivariable logistic regression. A p value < 0.05 was considered significant for association. Result The overall prevalence of intraoperative cardiac complications was 24.3%. Preoperative ST-segment elevation adjusted odds ratio (AOR = 2.43, CI =2.06-3.67), history of hypertension (AOR = 3.42, CI =2.02-6.08), intraoperative hypoxia (AOR = 3.5, CI = 2.07-6.23), intraoperative hypotension (AOR = 6.2 9, CI =3.51-10.94), age > 85 years (AOR = 6.01, CI = 5.12-12.21), and anesthesia time > 3 h (AOR =2.27, CI = 2.0.2-18.25) were factors significantly associated with intraoperative cardiac complications. Conclusion The magnitude of intraoperative cardiac complications was high among geriatric patients who had undergone non-cardiac surgery. The independent risk factors of intraoperative cardiac complications for this population included age > 85, ST-segment elevation, perioperative hypertension (stage 3 with regular treatment), duration of anesthesia >3 h, intraoperative hypoxia, and intraoperative hypotension. Holistic preoperative evaluation, optimization optimal and perioperative care for preventing perioperative risk factors listed above, and knowing all possible risk factors are suggested to reduce the occurrence of complications.

Abstract
Little is known about the independent and joint effects of the energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) and dietary diversity score (DDS) on sarcopenia and its components (low muscle mass, low muscle strength, and low physical performance). A total of 155,669 UK Biobank participants with ≥1 (maximum 5) 24 h dietary assessments were included in this cross-sectional analysis. We used logistic regression models to investigate the associations of E-DII and DDS with sarcopenia and its three components. We further examined the joint effects of E-DII and DDS on sarcopenia and its components using additive and multiplicative interaction analyses. We observed that lower E-DII and higher DDS were associated with lower odds of sarcopenia and its components. There were significant joint associations of E-DII and DDS with sarcopenia and low physical performance (p-interaction < 0.05) on the multiplicative interactive scale. Our study suggests that lower dietary inflammatory potential and higher dietary diversity might be important protective factors against sarcopenia and its components. More cases of sarcopenia and low physical performance might be preventable by adherence to a more anti-inflammatory diet combined with a higher dietary diversity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) recently released the first international consensus on the diagnostic criteria for Sarcopenic obesity (SO). The present study aimed to explore the ability of SO to predict the risk of pneumonia in patients with stable schizophrenia. METHODS This was a prospective study involving hospitalized patients with schizophrenia aged ≥50 years from two mental health centers in western China. Baseline patient data were collected from September 1 to September 30, 2020. Follow-up data on pneumonia were collected from October 2020 to October 2022. The diagnosis of SO was based on the ESPEN/EASO criteria. Patients were assessed for handgrip strength (HGS), skeletal muscle mass/weight (SMM/W), and fat mass percentage (FM%). Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the effect of SO on the risk of pneumonia in patients with stable schizophrenia. RESULTS A total of 320 patients with stable schizophrenia were included. Of these, 74 (23.13%) were diagnosed with SO, while 117 (36.56%) developed pneumonia. Compared with patients in the non-low HGS, non-low HGS + non-low SMM/W (or non-low HGS + low SMM/W or low HGS + non-low SMM/W) and non-SO groups, the proportions of patients with pneumonia in the low HGS (42.3% vs. 25.9%, p = 0.004), low HGS + low SMM/W (45.3% vs. 33.3%, p = 0.048), and SO (47.3% vs. 33.3%, p = 0.029) groups, respectively, were higher. However, there was no difference in the proportion of patients with pneumonia in the low SMM/W group and the obese group compared with the non-low SMM/W and non-obese groups. Further logistic regression analysis after adjustment for potential influencing factors showed that compared with the non-low HGS group, patients in the low HGS group had a higher risk of pneumonia (OR = 1.892, 95%CI: 1.096-3.264). CONCLUSION SO defined according to the ESPEN/EASO criteria was not found to be significantly associated with the development of pneumonia in patients with stable schizophrenia. Further verification of these results is needed with larger sample sizes and the establishment of a cutoff value for this population.

Abstract
Objective Stroke is frequently associated with muscle mass loss. Treadmill training is considered the most effective treatment for sarcopenia. Circadian rhythms are closely related to exercise and have been extensively studied. The skeletal muscle has its molecular clock genes. Exercise may regulate skeletal muscle clock genes. This study evaluated the effects of early treadmill training on the skeletal muscle molecular clock machinery in rats with stroke and determined the relationship of these changes with exercise-induced improvements in skeletal muscle health. Materials and methods Overall, 168 Sprague-Dawley rats were included in this study. We established an ischemic stroke rat model of sarcopenia. Finally, 144 rats were randomly allocated to four groups (36 per group): normal, sham, middle cerebral artery occlusion, and training. Neurological scores, rotating rod test, body weight, muscle circumference, wet weight, and hematoxylin-eosin staining were assessed. Twenty-four rats were used for transcriptome sequencing. Gene and protein expressions of skeletal muscles, such as brain muscle arnt-like 1, period 1, and period 2, were measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Results Neurological function scores and rotating rod test results improved after treadmill training. Nine differentially expressed genes were identified by comparing the sham group with the hemiplegic side of the model group. Seventeen differentially expressed genes were identified between the hemiplegic and non-hemiplegic sides. BMAL1, PER1, and PER2 mRNA levels increased on both sides after treadmill training. BMAL1 expression increased, and PER1 expression decreased on both sides, whereas PER2 expression decreased on the hemiplegic side but increased on the non-hemiplegic side. Conclusion Treadmill training can mitigate muscle loss and regulate skeletal muscle clock gene expression following ischemic stroke. Exercise affects the hemiplegic side and has a positive regulatory effect on the non-hemiplegic side.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Lean body mass loss after bariatric surgery (BS) is remarkable, despite an effective long-term mass reduction and significant declines in comorbidities. A person's functional capacity is adversely affected when their skeletal muscle strength declines by up to 30%. This study aimed to assess the isokinetic trunk muscle strength and fatigue rate in individuals after BS. Materials and Methods: This study included fifty-eight patients, both male and female, ranging in age from 19 to 45. Twenty-seven individuals had BS and twenty-seven healthy people served as the control group. The primary outcomes were the measurement of the concentric and eccentric isokinetic muscle strength of the trunk flexor and extensor muscles. An isokinetic dynamometer (Biodex Rehabilitation and Testing System 3) was used for the assessment of the isokinetic muscle strength. Noraxon EMG was used to determine a secondary outcome, which was the median frequency slop (MF/time) and root mean square slop (RMS/time) of the lumbar erector spinea muscle at 50% of the Maximum Voluntary Isometric Contraction (MVIC). Outcome measures were assessed for both groups. Results: Compared to the control group, the bariatric group showed a lower mean value of both concentric and eccentric isokinetic muscle strength for the flexor and extensor trunk muscles (p < 0.05). In terms of the EMG fatigue rate, the RMS slope increased significantly more than that of the control group, while the MF slope decreased (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The current study found that, in comparison to the healthy subjects, the BS group showed reduced levels of fatigue and isokinetic strength in the trunk muscles. Based on these results, it is recommended that individuals who underwent BS take part in tailored rehabilitation programs to avoid potential musculoskeletal issues in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity (PA) behaviours and comorbid diseases are associated with muscle strength. However, the association between dynapenia and detailed PA behaviours, including participation in aerobic and resistance exercises and sedentary behaviour (SB), in relation to comorbid diseases has not yet been investigated. Using nationwide data, this study aimed to evaluate the independent association of dynapenia with detailed PA behaviour (participation in aerobic and resistance exercises and SB), and assess the differential associations of detailed PA behaviour with dynapenia according to comorbid diseases with prevalent sarcopenia. METHODS A total of 7,558 community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 65 years who were included in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2014 to 2019 were included in the present study. Cross-sectional associations between PA behaviours (participation in aerobic exercise, participation in resistance exercise, and SB) and dynapenia were analysed using complex-sample multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models according to the type of comorbid disease (cardiovascular disease [CVD], diabetes mellitus [DM], and chronic lung disease [CLD]). RESULTS Sufficient aerobic exercise, sufficient resistance exercise, and low sedentary time of < 420 min/day showed independent negative associations with dynapenia (odds ratio [OR], 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.60-0.83; OR, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.42-0.69; and OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.72-0.97, respectively). Among the participants with CVD or CLD, the associations of sufficient resistance exercise (OR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.26-0.82 and OR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.35-0.75 for CVD and CLD, respectively) and low sedentary time (OR, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.45-0.98 and OR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.55-0.93 for CVD and CLD, respectively) with dynapenia were significant, whereas the association of sufficient aerobic exercise with dynapenia was insignificant. Meanwhile, in participants with DM, sufficient aerobic exercise (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.52-0.94) and sufficient resistance exercise (OR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.29-0.70) were independently associated with dynapenia, whereas no association between SB and dynapenia was found. CONCLUSION We observed an independent inverse association between PA behaviours and dynapenia. Disease-specific associations between each PA behaviour (sufficient aerobic exercise, sufficient resistance exercise, and low sedentary time) and dynapenia differed in the older adults. Therefore, these differences should be acknowledged during interventions for this population.

Abstract
Introduction Seniors are vulnerable to frailty, a condition linked to falls, fractures, hospitalizations, and sarcopenia. Even with regular meals, senior daycare users are at risk for malnutrition. Methods This study assessed malnutrition risk in daycare users, using the web-based Mini Nutritional Assessment Form (MNA®-SF). Individuals identified as malnourished or at risk were examined for changes in nutritional status with and without oral nutritional supplementation (ONS). Results Of 507 subjects, 138 (27.2%) were malnourished or at risk. Discontinuation rates were 20.0% (7/35) for the ONS group and 40.0% (10/25) for the regular care (RC) group. Among 29 patients with measurable weight change after six months, 19 (ONS group) and 10 (RC group) participated. The ONS group exhibited significant increases in body weight (+1.4 ± 2.9 kg, p < 0.01), body mass index (BMI) (+0.6 ± 0.9 kg/m2, p < 0.01), calf circumference (+3.2 ± 0.2 cm, p < 0.01), and grip strength (+1.2 ± 1.9 kg, p = 0.069). Conversely, the RC group showed no significant increases in body weight (+1.0 ± 1.9 kg, p = 0.146), BMI (+0.4 ± 0.8 kg/m2, p = 0.176), or grip strength (-0.7 ± 1.7 kg, p = 0.327), with decreased grip strength and calf circumference (-0.8 ± 0.9 cm, p < 0.05). In the ONS group, 52.6% (10/19) consumed over 400 kcal/day of ONS, and 84.2% maintained this intake for three months. Malnutrition is prevalent among daycare users. Conclusion ONS influences weight, BMI, and calf circumference, potentially reducing discontinuation rates. Abstract
Objective This review aimed to analyze and compare the accuracy of eight screening tools for sarcopenia in older Chinese adults according to different diagnostic criteria. Methods This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases were searched between the publication of the first expert consensus on sarcopenia in 2010 and April 2023 using relevant MeSH terms. We evaluated the risk bias of the included studies using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) tool. The pooled result of sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and plot the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (SROC) were calculated by using a bivariate random-effects model. The accuracies of sensitivity and specificity of the screening tools were compared using the Z-test. Results A total of 30 studies (23,193 participants) were included, except for calf circumference (CC), Ishii, and Finger-ring Test; Screening tools for sarcopenia in older Chinese adults have consistently shown low to moderate sensitivity and moderate to high specificity. Regional and sex differences affect the accuracy of the screening tools. In terms of sensitivity and specificity, the CC, Ishii, and Finger-ring Test were superior to the other screening tools. Conclusion The Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 criteria are more appropriate for the diagnosis of sarcopenia in older Chinese adults. According to the AWGS 2019, CC and Ishii are recommended for sarcopenia screening in older Chinese adults.

Abstract
Background: Sarcopenia and spinal cord injury (SCI) often coexist, but little is known about the associations. This study aimed to assess the impact of SCI on muscle and bone mass and the correlations between the clinical characteristics of SCI patients and sarcopenia. Methods: A total of 136 patients with SCI admitted to rehabilitation hospital were included in this study. The type and severity of injury (AIS), level of spasticity (MAS), bone mineral density and Appendicular Lean Muscle Mass (ALM) were assessed. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to EWGSOP2 cut-off points for ALM. Results: Subjects were divided into two groups: Group S-SCI (N = 66, sarcopenia group) and Group NS-SCI (N = 70, without sarcopenia). Mean ALM values in the two groups were 0.49 and 0.65, respectively. A total of 75% of women and 42.9% of men developed sarcopenia. The mean age was 35.8 years in the sarcopenic patients and 41.5 in the non-sarcopenia group. Over 55% of AIS Grades A and B cases, 69.7% of MAS level 0 cases and 51.6% of the patients with osteoporosis had sarcopenia. The mean number of comorbidities was 2.7 in the sarcopenia group. Conclusions: Gender, type of injury, presence of multiple comorbidities and age were directly associated with sarcopenia; meanwhile, surprisingly, spasticity level and the presence of immobilization osteoporosis were not.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is a geriatric disease characterized by the progressive and generalized loss of skeletal lean mass and strength with age. The prevalence of sarcopenia in the Vietnamese population is unknown. This study sought to estimate the prevalence of and risk factors for sarcopenia among community-dwelling individuals in Vietnam. METHODS This cross-sectional study is part of the ongoing Vietnam Osteoporosis Study project. The study involved 1308 women and 591 men aged 50 years and older as at 2015 (study entry). Whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure the appendicular skeletal lean mass. Anthropometric and clinical data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Sarcopenia was defined according to the criteria proposed by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia in 2019. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between potential risk factors and sarcopenia. RESULTS The prevalence of sarcopenia in women and men was 14% (n = 183) and 16% (n = 83), respectively. Age (odds ratio [OR] per 10 years = 1.37; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-1.48) and being underweight (OR = 1.61; 95% CI 1.00-2.58) were independently associated with increased risk of sarcopenia. The combination of low physical activity, being underweight and advancing age accounted for ~27% of sarcopenic patients. However, most of the attributable fraction was due to ageing. CONCLUSIONS Sarcopenia is common in community-dwelling Vietnamese adults, particularly those with advancing age, who are underweight and with low physical activity.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of aquatic exercise on parameters of functional autonomy, mental health, and oxidative dysfunction in elderly patients with DM2. A total of 130 elderly were included in the longitudinal clinical study and were attributed to the non-diabetic group (n = 27) and diabetes the group (n = 22). Both groups participated in 24 sessions of Hydro-HIIT, 48 h before and after Hydro-HIIT, the GDLAM index, depression, and anxiety scores and markers of oxidative dysfunction were quantified. After intervention, GI decreased in both groups (non-diabetes group = -24%; diabetes group = -22%) (p < 0.05), markers of depression (-46%), anxiety (-60%), DCFH-DA (-55%), SOD (+59%), TNF-α (-37%) and IL-1 (-48%) in diabetes group (p < 0.05). The intervention with Hydro-HIIT improves aspects related to functional autonomy, mental health, and exerts consequently, a modulating effect on oxidative stress and inflammatory response in elderly people diagnosed with DM2.

Abstract
This study is focused on the fact that in the context of increasing global aging and cancer diagnoses, additional challenges arise in clinical care. Adequate functionality and body composition are key to coping with antineoplastic treatment, which can lead to better treatment tolerance, survival, and quality of life. This is a cross-sectional comparative study focused on the assessment and comparison of body composition and functionality between cancer patients and a reference population, with the aim of establishing meaningful baseline values. Techniques such as manual dynamometry, the Five-Times Sit-to-Stand test, and bioimpedance were used to collect data from 374 oncologic patients and 1244 reference individuals. The results reveal significant disparities in functionality and body composition among participants, and provide age group-specific adjusted baseline values for those diagnosed with cancer. These findings may have crucial clinical implications for applying particular cut-off points designed for this population group, which makes the assessment process faster and more accurate, enhances the capacity of medical personnel to act quickly, and improves the management of frailty in cancer patients.

Abstract
Fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21) is an intercellular signaling molecule secreted by metabolic organs, including skeletal muscle, in response to intracellular stress. FGF21 crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts via the nervous system to coordinate aspects of the adaptive starvation response, including increased lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, fatty acid oxidation, and activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis. Given its beneficial effects for hepatic lipid metabolism, pharmaceutical FGF21 analogues are used in clinical trials treatment of fatty liver disease. We predicted pharmacologic treatment with FGF21 increases HPA axis activity and skeletal muscle glucocorticoid signaling and induces skeletal muscle atrophy in mice. Here we found a short course of systemic FGF21 treatment decreased muscle protein synthesis and reduced tibialis anterior weight; this was driven primarily by its effect in female mice. Similarly, intracerebroventricular FGF21 reduced tibialis anterior muscle fiber cross-sectional area; this was more apparent among female mice than male littermates. In agreement with the reduced muscle mass, the topmost enriched metabolic pathways in plasma collected from FGF21-treated females were related to amino acid metabolism, and the relative abundance of plasma proteinogenic amino acids was increased up to 3-fold. FGF21 treatment increased hypothalamic Crh mRNA, plasma corticosterone, and adrenal weight, and increased expression of glucocorticoid receptor target genes known to reduce muscle protein synthesis and/or promote degradation. Given the proposed use of FGF21 analogues for the treatment of metabolic disease, the study is both physiologically relevant and may have important clinical implications.

Abstract
Objective To investigate differences in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters and proton density fat fraction (PDFF) in the spinal muscles of younger and older adult males. Methods Twelve younger (19-30 years) and 12 older (61-81years) healthy, physically active male participants underwent T1W, T2W, Dixon and DTI of the lumbar spine. The eigenvalues (λ1, λ2, and λ3), fractional anisotropy (FA), and mean diffusivity (MD) from the DTI together with the PDFF were determined in the multifidus, medial and lateral erector spinae (ESmed, ESlat), and quadratus lumborum (QL) muscles. A two-way ANOVA was used to investigate differences with age and muscle and t-tests for differences in individual muscles with age. Results The ANOVA gave significant differences with age for all DTI parameters and the PDFF (P < .01) and with muscle (P < .01) for all DTI parameters except for λ1 and for the PDFF. The mean of the eigenvalues and MD were lower and the FA higher in the older age group with differences reaching statistical significance for all DTI measures for ESlat and QL (P < .01) but only in ESmed for λ3 and MD (P < .05). Conclusions Differences in DTI parameters of muscle with age result from changes in both in the intra- and extra-cellular space and cannot be uniquely explained in terms of fibre length and diameter. Advances in knowledge Previous studies looking at age have used small groups with uneven age spacing. Our study uses two well defined and separated age groups.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is an age-related clinical complaint characterized by the progressive deterioration of skeletal muscle mass and strength over time. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with faster and more relevant skeletal muscle impairment. Both conditions influence each other, leading to negative consequences on glycemic control, cardiovascular risk, general health status, risk of falls, frailty, overall quality of life, and mortality. PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for research articles, scientific reports, observational studies, clinical trials, narrative and systematic reviews, and meta-analyses to review the evidence on the pathophysiology of di-abetes-induced sarcopenia, its relevance in terms of glucose control and diabetes-related outcomes, and diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The review comprehensively addresses key elements for the clinical definition and diagnostic criteria of sarcopenia, the pathophysiological correlation be-tween T2D, sarcopenia, and related outcomes, a critical review of the role of antihyperglycemic treatment on skeletal muscle health, and perspectives on the role of specific treatment targeting myokine signaling pathways involved in glucose control and the regulation of skeletal muscle metabolism and trophism. Prompt diagnosis and adequate management, including lifestyle inter-vention, health diet programs, micronutrient supplementation, physical exercise, and pharmaco-logical treatment, are needed to prevent or delay skeletal muscle deterioration in T2D.

Abstract
Objective Due to the lack of information on the effects of nutritional guidance focused on leucine intake in patients undergoing maintenance cardiac rehabilitation, this study investigated on plasma leucine concentrations, lean body mass, and muscle strength. Methods Nutritional guidance, focused on leucine (intervention group) or general nutritional guidance (control group), was provided for six months to patients participating in cardiac rehabilitation. Body composition, grip strength, hematological test results, and diet of both groups were compared before and after the intervention. Results Seven patients in the intervention group (53.2 ± 18.2 years) and 7 patients in the control group (58.6 ± 15.3 years) were included. Dietary survey results showed that the six-month intervention significantly (p < 0.05) increased protein intake and estimated leucine intake only in the intervention group. There was no significant difference in the rate of change in plasma leucine concentration between the two groups. The rate of change in lean body mass was significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group (p = 0.035). The rate of change in plasma leucine concentration and that in lean body mass was positively correlated only in the intervention group (r = 0.777, p = 0.040), and the rate of change in plasma leucine concentration was also positively correlated with the rate of change in grip strength (ρ = 0.857, p = 0.014). Conclusions In the patients undergoing maintenance cardiac rehabilitation, increased plasma leucine concentration by nutritional guidance focused on leucine increased lean body mass without any increasing the training load.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probable sarcopenia is determined by a reduction in muscle strength assessed with the handgrip strength test or 5 times sit-to-stand test, and it is confirmed with a reduction in muscle quantity determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or bioelectrical impedance analysis. However, these parameters are not implemented in clinical practice mainly due to a lack of equipment and time constraints. Nowadays, the technical innovations incorporated in most smartphone devices, such as high-speed video cameras, provide the opportunity to develop specific smartphone apps for measuring kinematic parameters related with sarcopenia during a simple sit-to-stand transition. OBJECTIVE We aimed to create and validate a sit-to-stand video analysis-based app for diagnosing sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults and to analyze its construct validity with health-related risk factors and frailty. METHODS A total of 686 community-dwelling older adults (median age: 72 years; 59.2% [406/686] female) were recruited from elderly social centers. The index test was a sit-to-stand video analysis-based app using muscle power and calf circumference as proxies of muscle strength and muscle quantity, respectively. The reference standard was obtained by different combinations of muscle strength (handgrip strength or 5 times sit-to-stand test result) and muscle quantity (appendicular skeletal mass or skeletal muscle index) as recommended by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People-2 (EWGSOP2). Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve were calculated to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the app. Construct validity was evaluated using logistic regression to identify the risks associated with health-related outcomes and frailty (Fried phenotype) among those individuals who were classified as having sarcopenia by the index test. RESULTS Sarcopenia prevalence varied from 2% to 11% according to the different combinations proposed by the EWGSOP2 guideline. Sensitivity, specificity, and AUC were 70%-83.3%, 77%-94.9%, and 80.5%-87.1%, respectively, depending on the diagnostic criteria used. Likewise, positive and negative predictive values were 10.6%-43.6% and 92.2%-99.4%, respectively. These results proved that the app was reliable to rule out the disease. Moreover, those individuals who were diagnosed with sarcopenia according to the index test showed more odds of having health-related adverse outcomes and frailty compared to their respective counterparts, regardless of the definition proposed by the EWGSOP2. CONCLUSIONS The app showed good diagnostic performance for detecting sarcopenia in well-functioning Spanish community-dwelling older adults. Individuals with sarcopenia diagnosed by the app showed more odds of having health-related risk factors and frailty compared to their respective counterparts. Abstract
AIM This study investigated the prevalence of possible sarcopenia (PSA) in a large sample of middle-aged and older adults, and determined the association between PSA, major chronic diseases and the number of chronic diseases. METHODS A total of 14 917 adults aged ≥40 years were included in the analysis. The handgrip strength and the five-time chair stand test were used to assess PSA. The participants' major chronic diseases were divided into 14 categories. Four categories were created based on the participants' number of chronic illnesses: 0, 1, 2 and ≥3. RESULTS The present study found an overall prevalence of PSA of 23.6% among Chinese middle-aged and older adults aged ≥40 years, with the risk increasing with advancing age. PSA was significantly associated with most categories of chronic diseases and multimorbidity. The closely independent associations were obtained for stroke; emotional, nervous or psychiatric problems; chronic lung disease, asthma, heart disease, hypertension and arthritis or rheumatism. Compared with participants with 0 chronic disease, those with two or more chronic diseases had higher odds for PSA. However, the association between PSA and the number of chronic diseases varied in different sex and age groups. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that PSA is associated with major chronic diseases among middle-aged and older adults. People with two or more chronic diseases have a greater likelihood of PSA compared with those without chronic diseases, and the association between PSA and the number of chronic diseases largely depended on sex and age. Abstract
Objectives This comprehensive review aims to examine the reciprocal interplay between Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and sarcopenia, identify prevailing research gaps, and discuss therapeutic approaches and measures to enhance healthcare practices within hospital settings. Methods A thorough literature review was conducted to gather relevant studies and articles on the relationship between T2DM and sarcopenia. Various databases were searched, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct databases. The search terms included T2DM, sarcopenia, inflammation, insulin resistance, advanced glycation end products, oxidative stress, muscle dimensions, muscle strength, muscle performance, aging, nutrition, hormone levels, and physical activity. The collected articles were critically analysed to extract key findings and identify gaps in current research. Results The prevalence and incidence of metabolic and musculoskeletal disorders, notably T2DM and sarcopenia, have surged in recent years. T2DM is marked by inflammation, insulin resistance, accumulation of advanced glycation end products, and oxidative stress, while sarcopenia involves a progressive decline in skeletal muscle mass and function. The review underscores the age-related correlation between sarcopenia and adverse outcomes like fractures, falls, and mortality. Research gaps regarding optimal nutritional interventions for individuals with T2DM and sarcopenia are identified, emphasizing the necessity for further investigation in this area. Conclusions The reciprocal interplay between T2DM and sarcopenia holds significant importance. Further research is warranted to address knowledge gaps, particularly in utilizing precise measurement tools during clinical trials. Lifestyle modifications appear beneficial for individuals with T2DM and sarcopenia. Additionally, practical nutritional interventions require investigation to optimize healthcare practices in hospital settings. Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent operational definitions of sarcopenia have not been replicated and compared in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) populations. We aimed to identify sarcopenia measures that discriminate ANZ adults with slow walking speed (<0.8 m/s) and determine the agreement between the Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) and revised European Working Group for Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) operational definitions of sarcopenia. METHODS Eight studies comprising 8 100 ANZ community-dwelling adults (mean age ± standard deviation, 62.0 ± 14.4 years) with walking speed, grip strength (GR), and lean mass data were combined. Replicating the SDOC methodology, 15 candidate variables were included in sex-stratified classification and regression tree models and receiver operating characteristic curves on a pooled cohort with complete data to identify variables and cut points discriminating slow walking speed (<0.8 m/s). Agreement and prevalence estimates were compared using Cohen's Kappa (CK). RESULTS Receiver operating characteristic curves identified GR as the strongest variable for discriminating slow from normal walking speed in women (GR <20.50 kg, area under curve [AUC] = 0.68) and men (GR <31.05 kg, AUC = 0.64). Near-perfect agreement was found between the derived ANZ cut points and SDOC cut points (CK 0.8-1.0). Sarcopenia prevalence ranged from 1.5% (EWGSOP2) to 37.2% (SDOC) in women and 1.0% (EWGSOP2) to 9.1% (SDOC) in men, with no agreement (CK <0.2) between EWGSOP2 and SDOC. CONCLUSIONS Grip strength is the primary discriminating characteristic for slow walking speed in ANZ women and men, consistent with findings from the SDOC. Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium and EWGSOP2 definitions showed no agreement suggesting these proposed definitions measure different characteristics and identify people with sarcopenia differently.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related muscle decline (sarcopenia) associates with numerous health risk factors and poor quality of life. Drugs that counter sarcopenia without harmful side effects are lacking, and repurposing existing pharmaceuticals could expedite realistic clinical options. Recent studies suggest bisphosphonates promote muscle health; however, the efficacy of bisphosphonates as an anti-sarcopenic therapy is currently unclear. METHODS Using Caenorhabditis elegans as a sarcopenia model, we treated animals with 100 nM, 1, 10, 100 and 500 μM zoledronic acid (ZA) and assessed lifespan and healthspan (movement rates) using a microfluidic chip device. The effects of ZA on sarcopenia were examined using GFP-tagged myofibres or mitochondria at days 0, 4 and 6 post-adulthood. Mechanisms of ZA-mediated healthspan extension were determined using combined ZA and targeted RNAi gene knockdown across the life-course. RESULTS We found 100 nM and 1 μM ZA increased lifespan (P < 0.001) and healthspan [954 ± 53 (100 nM) and 963 ± 48 (1 μM) vs. 834 ± 59% (untreated) population activity AUC, P < 0.05]. 10 μM ZA shortened lifespan (P < 0.0001) but not healthspan (758.9 ± 37 vs. 834 ± 59, P > 0.05), whereas 100 and 500 μM ZA were larval lethal. ZA (1 μM) significantly improved myofibrillar structure on days 4 and 6 post-adulthood (83 and 71% well-organized myofibres, respectively, vs. 56 and 34% controls, P < 0.0001) and increased well-networked mitochondria at day 6 (47 vs. 16% in controls, P < 0.01). Genes required for ZA-mediated healthspan extension included fdps-1/FDPS-1 (278 ± 9 vs. 894 ± 17% population activity AUC in knockdown + 1 μM ZA vs. untreated controls, respectively, P < 0.0001), daf-16/FOXO (680 ± 16 vs. 894 ± 17%, P < 0.01) and agxt-2/BAIBA (531 ± 23 vs. 552 ± 8%, P > 0.05). Life/healthspan was extended through knockdown of igdb-1/FNDC5 (635 ± 10 vs. 523 ± 10% population activity AUC in gene knockdown vs. untreated controls, P < 0.01) and sir-2.3/SIRT-4 (586 ± 10 vs. 523 ± 10%, P < 0.05), with no synergistic improvements in ZA co-treatment vs. knockdown alone [651 ± 12 vs. 635 ± 10% (igdb-1/FNDC5) and 583 ± 9 vs. 586 ± 10% (sir-2.3/SIRT-4), both P > 0.05]. Conversely, let-756/FGF21 and sir-2.2/SIRT-4 were dispensable for ZA-induced healthspan [630 ± 6 vs. 523 ± 10% population activity AUC in knockdown + 1 μM ZA vs. untreated controls, P < 0.01 (let-756/FGF21) and 568 ± 9 vs. 523 ± 10%, P < 0.05 (sir-2.2/SIRT-4)]. CONCLUSIONS Despite lacking an endoskeleton, ZA delays Caenorhabditis elegans sarcopenia, which translates to improved neuromuscular function across the life course. Bisphosphonates might, therefore, be an immediately exploitable anti-sarcopenia therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is associated with a decrease in muscle mass. Insulin resistance and hyperglycemia accelerate muscle loss, leading to a deterioration in strength, muscle mass, and physical capacity in older adults. This study was conducted to determine the association between sarcopenia and poor glycemic control in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out in older adults with T2D in geriatric outpatient clinics. Sarcopenia was diagnosed as per the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) criteria. According to glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, participants were classified into glycemic control (HbA1c ≤ 7.5%) and poor glycemic control (HbA1c ≥ 7.5%) groups. RESULTS Older adults with sarcopenia were found to have poor glycemic control compared to adults without sarcopenia (62.3% vs. 47.9%, p = 0.007). Logistic regression analysis showed an association between poor glycemic control and the presence of sarcopenia (odds ratio (OR): 1.79, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.17-2.75) and low muscle mass (OR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.07-2.73). CONCLUSIONS Poor glycemic control is associated with the presence of sarcopenia and low muscle mass, which highlights the need to implement better treatment strategies in order to reduce the loss of muscle mass.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia has recently been recognized as a complication of diabetes. However, there are few results about the prevalence of sarcopenia and dynapenia and the related clinical outcomes in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Our objectives were to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia and dynapenia and to determine whether there are any associations with disease-related factors in people with T1DM. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in people with T1DM. We assessed appendicular skeletal mass index (ASMI) using bioimpedance 50 Hz (Nutrilab Akern). Muscle function was assessed through handgrip strength (HGS) using a Jamar dynamometer. Sarcopenia was defined as a low HGS with low ASMI, whereas dynapenia was defined as low HGS with a normal ASMI. We used HGS data from the Spanish population percentile table and a cut-off point at p5 as dynapenia. The association of clinical, metabolic, and lifestyle variables with sarcopenia and dynapenia was studied. RESULTS This study included 62 T1DM patients (66% females, mean age of 38 ± 14 years, body mass index (BMI) of 24.9 ± 4.7 kg/m2). The prevalence of sarcopenia and dynapenia was 8% and 23%, respectively. In our sample, there were more men in the sarcopenic and dynapenic groups. The sarcopenic group showed a significantly higher mean HbA1c value. Lower diabetes duration, PREDIMED score, BMI, and muscle mass measures (fat-free mass index (FFMI), ASMI, and body cell mass index (BCMI)) were significantly associated with sarcopenia. Decreased diabetes duration, PREDIMED score, phase angle (PhA), and HGS values showed a significant association with dynapenia. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of sarcopenia and dynapenia was high in people with T1DM in our study. Specifically, the proportion of dynapenia was quite high. HGS and ASMI are practical tools for the assessment of muscle health status in T1DM, and low values are associated with poor glycemic control, underweight, and low adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Thus, dynapenia may predict accelerated muscle aging in T1DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The SARS-CoV2 pandemic impacted many critically ill patients, causing sequelae, affecting lung function, and involving the musculoskeletal system. We evaluated the association between lung function and muscle quality index in severely ill post-COVID-19 patients. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on a post-COVID-19 cohort at a third-level center. The study included patients who had experienced severe-to-critical COVID-19. Anthropometric measurements, such as body mass index (BMI) and handgrip strength, were obtained to calculate the muscle quality index (MQI). Additionally, spirometry, measurements of expiratory and inspiratory pressure, and an assessment of DLCO in the lungs were performed. The MQI was categorized into two groups: low-MQI (below the 50th percentile) and high-MQI (above the 50th percentile), based on sex. Group differences were analyzed, and a multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to assess the association between respiratory function and MQI. RESULTS Among the 748 patients analyzed, 61.96% required mechanical ventilation, and the median hospital stay was 17 days. In patients with a low MQI, it was observed that both mechanical respiratory function and DLCO were lower. The multivariate analysis revealed significantly lower findings in mechanical respiratory function among patients with a low MQI. CONCLUSION The Low-MQI is an independent predictor associated with pulmonary function parameters in subjects with Post-COVID-19 syndrome.

Abstract
Purpose Sarcopenia and physical activity are significant factors influencing cognitive function. However, few studies have examined their underlying mechanisms between the three conditions. The aim of the study is to examine the mediating role of physical activity in the relationship between sarcopenia and cognitive function in elderly nursing home residents. Materials and Methods A total of 420 older adults aged 60 years and above in nursing homes participated in this study. Sarcopenia was defined following the Asian Sarcopenia Working Group (AWGS) 2019 criteria. Cognitive function was assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to explore the relationships between sarcopenia, cognitive function and physical activity. Mediation analyses were performed to examine whether physical activity moderates the relationship between sarcopenia and cognitive function, with the use of PROCESS macro version 4.0. Results A total of 386 older adults were included in the analysis (mean age 80.30 years), 175 (45.3%) were assessed as cognitive impairment, and sarcopenia was more common in those with cognitive impairment (p < 0.01). The linear regression analysis indicated that there were significant associations between sarcopenia and physical activity (β = -0.285, p = 0.012), physical activity and cognitive function (β = 0.218, p < 0.001), and sarcopenia and cognitive function (β = -0.245, p = 0.021). Mediating effects of physical activity on the association between sarcopenia and cognitive function were observed in participants, with 20.2% of partial mediating effect. Conclusion The results of the study suggest physical activity may partially buffer the adverse effects of sarcopenia on cognitive impairment among the older adults in nursing homes. Accordingly, engagement in physical activity can help to preserve cognitive function among those with sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with intellectual disabilities (ID) have a lower life expectancy than their peers without ID. A contributing factor to the lower life expectancy and early mortality could be sarcopenia: low muscle mass and low muscle function. In the general population, sarcopenia strongly predicts early mortality, but this association is unknown in people with ID. Therefore, this study aims to explore the association between sarcopenia and 5-year mortality in older adults with ID. METHODS In the Healthy Ageing and Intellectual Disabilities (HA-ID) study, the prevalence of sarcopenia was measured at baseline among 884 older adults (≥50 years) with ID. All-cause mortality was measured over a 5-year follow-up period. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were applied to determine the association between sarcopenia (no sarcopenia, pre-sarcopenia, sarcopenia, severe sarcopenia) and early mortality, adjusted for age, sex, level of ID, presence of Down syndrome, and co-morbidity (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes type 2 and metabolic syndrome). RESULTS The unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) for sarcopenia was 2.28 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.48-3.42], P < 0.001), and 2.40 (95% CI 1.40-4.10, P = 0.001) for severe sarcopenia. When adjusted for age, sex, level of ID, and Down syndrome, sarcopenia (HR = 1.72, 95% CI 1.08-2.75, P = 0.022) and severe sarcopenia (HR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.07-3.23, P = 0.028) were significantly associated with early mortality. When additionally adjusted for co-morbidity, the adjusted HR decreased to 1.62 (95% CI 1.02-2.59, P = 0.043) and 1.81 (95% CI 1.04-3.15, P = 0.035) for sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia, respectively. CONCLUSION Sarcopenia is an independent risk factor for early mortality in older adults with ID over a 5-year follow-up period. Our results stress the need to delay the incidence and development of sarcopenia in older adults with ID.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diabetes mellitus (DM) and sarcopenia (SP) are growing public health concerns in an aging society, which share common pathophysiological mechanisms and are associated with serious health consequences. We investigated the impact of DM and SP on all-cause and cardiovascular mortalities in a longitudinal nationwide population-based study. METHODS The study analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2008 and 2011, including information on appendicular skeletal muscle mass data. Mortality data up to December 2020 were retrieved from the National Death Registry. RESULTS Among the 17,920 participants, 14,737 (82.2 %) had neither DM nor SP (DM-/SP-), 1349 (7.5 %) had only DM (DM+/SP-), 1425 (8.0 %) had only SP (DM-/SP+), and 409 (2.3 %) had both DM and SP (DM+/SP+). Compared to the DM-/SP- group, the DM-/SP+ and DM+/SP+ groups demonstrated increased all-cause mortality with adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of 1.47 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-1.89) and 1.85 (95 % CI: 1.28-2.69), respectively, while the DM+/SP- group did not (HR 1.29, 95 % CI: 0.97-1.74). The DM+/SP+ group demonstrated the highest risk of overall mortality (p-for-trend <0.001). Compared to the DM-/SP- group, only the DM+/SP+ group demonstrated increased cardiovascular mortality with HRs of 2.10 (95 % CI: 1.11-4.00) while the DM+/SP- (HR 1.35, 95 % CI: 0.79-2.30) and DM-/SP+ (HR 1.42, 95 % CI: 0.84-2.43) groups did not. CONCLUSIONS The coexistence of DM and SP additively increased the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Individuals with either disease may require more careful management to prevent the development of the other disease to reduce mortality.

Abstract
The review aims to explore the potential benefit and risk of high-protein diets (HPD) regarding the comorbidity of sarcopoenia and CVD in the setting of cardiac rehabilitation (CR). CR is standard care for individuals who have experienced a cardiac event, but the current practice of predominantly aerobic exercise, a lower-fat diet and weight loss poorly addresses the issue of sarcopoenia. HPD, especially when combined with resistance exercise (RE), may be valuable adjuncts to current CR practice and benefit both muscle and cardiovascular health. Meta-analyses and randomised controlled trials of HPD and CVD risk show beneficial but variable effects regarding weight loss, the lipid profile, insulin resistance and lean body mass in those living with or high risk of CVD. Meta-analyses of prospective cohort studies on hard CVD endpoints favour lower- and plant-protein diets over higher animal protein, but the evidence is inconsistent. HPD augment the strength and muscle gaining benefits of RE in older populations, but there are no published data in those living with CVD providing promising opportunities for CR research. HPD raise concern regarding renal and bone health, the microbiome, branched chain amino acids and environmental sustainability and findings suggest that plant-based HPD may confer ecological and overall health advantages compared to animal-based HPD. However, incorporating RE with HPD might alleviate certain health risks. In conclusion, a largely plant-based HPD is deemed favourable for CR when combined with RE, but further research regarding efficacy and safety in CR populations is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenic obesity arises from increased muscle catabolism triggered by inflammation and inactivity. Its significance lies in its role in contributing to morbidity and mortality in gastric cancer. This study aims to explore the potential correlation between sarcopenia, sarcopenic obesity, and gastric cancer, as well as their effect on survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 162 patients aged ≥ 18 years who were diagnosed with stomach cancer. Patient age, gender, diagnostic laboratory results, and cancer characteristics were documented. Sarcopenia was assessed using the skeletal muscle index (SMI) (cm2/m2), calculated by measuring muscle mass area from a cross-sectional image at the L3 vertebra level of computed tomography (CT). RESULTS Among the 162 patients, 52.5% exhibited sarcopenia (with cut-off limits of 52.4 cm2/m2 for males and 38.5 cm2/m2 for females), and 4.9% showed sarcopenic obesity. Average skeletal muscle area (SMA) was 146.8 cm2; SMI was 50.6 cm2/m2 in men and 96.9 cm2 and 40.6 cm2/m2 in women, respectively. Sarcopenia significantly reduced mean survival (p = 0.033). There was no association between sarcopenic obesity and mortality (p > 0.05), but mortality was higher in sarcopenic obesity patients (p = 0.041). Patient weight acted as a protective factor against mortality, supporting the obesity paradox. Tumor characteristics, metabolic parameters, and concurrent comorbidities did not significantly impact sarcopenia or mortality. CONCLUSION Sarcopenia is more prevalent in the elderly population and is linked to increased mortality in gastric cancer patients. Paradoxically, higher body mass index (BMI) was associated with improved survival. Computed tomography offers a practical and reliable method for measuring muscle mass and distinguishing these distinctions. Abstract
PURPOSE Sarcopenia and myosteatosis, quantified via computed tomography (CT), are associated with poor colorectal cancer outcomes. These body composition estimates can be influenced by physical exercise. We explored the correlation between pre-diagnostic physical exercise, body composition close to diagnosis, and the combined prognosis impact of these factors. METHODS We studied 519 stage I-III colorectal cancer (CRC) cases diagnosed 2000-2016 with pre-diagnostic self-reported recreational physical exercise data collected in the prospective, population-based Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study, and CT-estimated skeletal muscle index (SMI) or skeletal muscle density (SMD). Risk estimates were calculated by multivariable logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS No association was seen between low pre-diagnostic physical exercise and sarcopenia/myosteatosis in the multivariable model adjusted for age, sex, educational level, tumor stage, and tumor location. In multivariable Cox regression models, the combination of low pre-diagnostic physical exercise and either sarcopenia or myosteatosis at the time of diagnosis was associated with cancer-specific mortality compared to the reference group of high physical exercise combined with no sarcopenia/myosteatosis (adjusted HR 1.94 95% CI 1.00-3.76 for sarcopenia and adjusted HR 2.39 95% CI 1.16-4.94 for myosteatosis). CONCLUSIONS The combined presence of low pre-diagnostic physical exercise and sarcopenia or myosteatosis was associated with increased CRC-specific mortality. Despite the positive effect on prognosis, physical exercise did not alter body composition estimates at diagnosis, which could indicate attenuation from other factors.

Abstract
The integration of resistance training for cardiac patients leads to important health outcomes that are not optimally obtained with aerobic exercise; these include an increase in muscle mass, maintenance of bone mineral density, and improvements in muscular fitness parameters. Despite the proliferation of evidence supporting resistance exercise in recent decades, the implementation of resistance training is underutilised, and prescription is often sub-optimal in cardiac patients. This is frequently associated with safety concerns and inadequate methods of practical exercise prescription. This review discusses the potential application of cluster sets to prescribe interval resistance training in cardiac populations. The addition of planned, regular passive intra-set rest periods (cluster sets) in resistance training (i.e., interval resistance training) may be a practical solution for reducing the magnitude of haemodynamic responses observed with traditional resistance training. This interval resistance training approach may be a more suitable option for cardiac patients. Additionally, many cardiac patients present with impaired exercise tolerance; this model of interval resistance training may be a more suitable option to reduce fatigue, increase patient tolerance and enhance performance to these workloads. Practical strategies to implement interval resistance training for cardiac patients are also discussed. Preliminary evidence suggests that interval resistance training may lead to safer acute haemodynamic responses in cardiac patients. Future research is needed to determine the efficacy and feasibility of interval resistance training for health outcomes in this population.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is an age-associated skeletal muscle disease characterized by the progressive loss of muscle mass and function. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the associations between sarcopenia and cardio-cerebrovascular disease (CCVD). A comprehensive search of the PubMed/Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases was conducted from their inception to April 1st, 2023. A total of eight cross-sectional studies involving 63,738,162 participants met the inclusion criteria. Pooled estimates of odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using random-effects models. The findings demonstrated a significant association between sarcopenia and an increased risk of CCVD (OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.18 - 1.50, I2 = 1%; p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses indicated that sarcopenia was associated with a 1.67-fold increase in the risk of stroke and a 1.31-fold increase in the risk of CVD. Four studies included in this review examined the association between sarcopenic obesity and the risk of CCVD, and the results revealed that sarcopenic obesity was associated with a higher risk of CCVD (OR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.08 - 2.49, I2 = 69%; p < 0.001). Meta-regressions and sensitivity analyses consistently supported the robustness of the overall findings. In conclusion, sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity are significantly associated with an elevated risk of developing CCVD. However, further prospective cohort studies are warranted to validate this relationship while controlling for confounding factors.
