Abstract
SCOPE Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is one of the most prevalent food allergies in early childhood, often treated via elimination diets including standard amino acid-based formula or amino acid-based formula supplemented with synbiotics (AAF or AAF-S). This work aimed to assess the effect of cow's milk (CM) tolerance acquisition and synbiotic (inulin, oligofructose, Bifidobacterium breve M-16 V) supplementation on the fecal metabolome in infants with IgE-mediated CMA. METHODS AND RESULTS The CMA-allergic infants received AAF or AAF-S for a year during which fecal samples were collected. The samples were subjected to metabolomics analyses covering gut microbial metabolites including SCFAs, tryptophan metabolites, and bile acids (BAs). Longitudinal data analysis suggested amino acids, BAs, and branched SCFAs alterations in infants who outgrew CMA during the intervention. Synbiotic supplementation significantly modified the fecal metabolome after 6 months of intervention, including altered purine, BA, and unsaturated fatty acid levels, and increased metabolites of infant-type Bifidobacterium species: indolelactic acid and 4-hydroxyphenyllactic acid. CONCLUSION This study offers no clear conclusion on the impact of CM-tolerance acquisition on the fecal metabolome. However, our results show that 6 months of synbiotic supplementation successfully altered fecal metabolome and suggest induced bifidobacteria activity, which subsequently declined after 12 months of intervention.

Abstract
The use of chemical herbicides induces negative impacts on the environment, animals, and human health. It also leads to the development of herbicide-resistant weeds. In this context, natural and efficacious herbicides are highly sought after. Essential oils are natural compounds with antibacterial, fungicidal, and phytotoxic properties. For this reason, we studied the post-emergence phytotoxic effect of cinnamon essential oil (cinnamon EO) from Cinnamomum cassia under greenhouse conditions, testing it against Trifolium incarnatum (T. incarnatum) and Lolium perenne (L. perenne). The content of malondialdehyde (MDA), percentage of water loss, electrolyte leakage, and the fluorescence of treated leaves by cinnamon EO were determined in order to understand the physiological and biochemical responses. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to study the effect of cinnamon EO on cellular organelles in different tissues of T. incarnatum leaves. Results showed that cinnamon EO quickly induced oxidative stress in treated leaves by increasing MDA content, impacting membrane integrity and causing water loss. TEM observations confirmed the cell desiccation by cellular plasmolysis and showed an alteration of the membrane integrity and chloroplast damages. Moreover, Raman analysis confirms the disturbance of the plant metabolism by the disappearance of some scattering bands which correspond to primary metabolites. Through our finding, we confirm that cinnamon essential oil (EO) could be proposed in the future as a potential bioherbicide and a suitable source of natural phytotoxic compounds with a multisite action on weeds.

Abstract
Different aminated starch (AS) [EEAS (introducing ethylenediamine into starch using cross-linking-etherification-amination method (CEA)), EPAS (introducing o-phenylenediamine using CEA), OEAS (introducing ethylenediamine using cross-linking-oxidation-amination method (COA)), and OPAS (introducing o-phenylenediamine using COA)] were synthesized. The AS-phenolic acids [gallic acid (GA), syringic acid (SA), and vanillic acid (VA)] conjugates were prepared by laccase-catalyzed reaction. The grafting efficiency of EEAS on GA, SA, and VA was 36.59%, 69.71%, and 68.85%, respectively. SA reduced the maximum depolymerization rate of EEAS. The relative crystallinity of EEAS and EPAS grafted phenolic acid increased, and their particles showed severe breakage in appearance. OEAS-phenolic acid conjugates lost its granular structure and behaved as flakes and lumps, while the surface of OPAS-phenolic acid conjugates remained smooth after grafting phenolic acid. GA increased the DPPH· scavenging efficiency of EEAS from 16.12% to 79.92%. The increased antioxidant capacity of the conjugates suggested that AS-phenolic acids conjugates have high potential for applications.

Abstract
Plant polyphenols are bioactive compounds touted for their antioxidant effects, and this is often the primary attribute used to explain their health benefits. However, we hypothesize that polyphenols have molecular properties independent of antioxidant function. The objective of this study was to investigate whether polyphenols had distinct molecular effects compared to pure antioxidants. RAW 264.7 macrophages were pretreated with either TEMPOL, a superoxide scavenger, N-acetyl cysteine, a hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenger, or polyphenol extracts from blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, kale, and baru nut. After 1 hour of pretreatment, cells were treated with lipopolysaccharides (100 ng/mL) for an additional 6 hour. Antioxidants and polyphenol extracts elicited antioxidant effects in vitro; however, polyphenols regulated redox proteins in a distinct, protective manner, whereas antioxidants, TEMPOL, and N-acetyl cysteine, did not. Additionally, distinct effects were observed in downstream Toll-like receptor 4 signaling and transcriptional activity of inflammatory proteins. We conclude that polyphenols have unique molecular effects that are independent of just their free radical scavenging capacity. This work advances our molecular understanding of how polyphenols act to target inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, the chemical properties of Ganoderma applanatum polysaccharides (GAP) were systematically investigated, followed by a comprehensive analysis of their antitumor and antioxidant capabilities. METHODS Ultrasonic circulation technology was employed for the extraction of GAP, facilitating the procurement of crude polysaccharides through the Sevag method, dialysis, and sequential alcohol precipitation. The chemical constituents of these polysaccharides were subsequently analyzed utilizing Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The antitumor and antioxidant properties of the polysaccharide components were assessed utilizing 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and free radical scavenging methods, respectively. RESULTS Gradient ethanol precipitation yielded three principal polysaccharide fractions: GAP-40, GAP-60 and GAP-80. Analysis revealed glucose as the predominant component in these fractions, with average molecular weights determined to be 77.75, 9.25 and 1.03 kDa, respectively. The antitumor activity of GAP-40, GAP-60 and GAP-80 against MCF-7 cells demonstrated both time and concentration dependence. Significantly, GAP-40, at a concentration of 1000 μg/mL over 48 h, presented a notable inhibition rate of 56.77%, outperforming GAP-60 and GAP-80. Furthermore, the antioxidant capacities of GAP-40, GAP-60 and GAP-80 were comparably significant to that of vitamin C, with detailed analysis revealing marked differences in antioxidant activity among the GAP variants. Specifically, GAP-40 exhibited superior efficacy in scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radicals relative to GAP-60 and GAP-80. In contrast, GAP-80 was distinguished by its exceptional hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity, surpassing that of both GAP-40 and GAP-60. CONCLUSION These results substantiate the potential of GAPs as viable and effective antitumor agents, additionally suggesting their utility as functional foods endowed with antioxidant attributes.

Abstract
Polysaccharides have been extensively studied in recent decades. Their conjugation with phenolic compounds of natural origin has demonstrated high added value, not only enhancing certain inherent properties but also introducing new ones. Recently, a sustainable approach utilizing oxidoreductase enzymes (Oxredases) (laccases (Lac), tyrosinases (Tyr) and peroxidases (Per)) has been employed, and interesting progress has been made. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the various Oxredases employed and the reaction mechanisms involved in the grafting of phenolic compounds (PCs) onto polysaccharides (PSs). We provide a detailed analysis of these reaction mechanisms based on modified polymer structural analysis techniques and supported by model reactions. The impacts of different reaction parameters on the final products are thoroughly discussed. Additionally, the properties of conjugated PS-PC are extensively explored to provide an overview of their physicochemical and functional behaviours. A comparison of the PS-PC conjugates obtained via the Oxredase approach and other existing chemical- and radical-mediated approaches is also presented, emphasizing the benefits of this enzymatic pathway. Finally, a critical analysis is proposed to identify areas of improvement, aiming to further refine this environmentally friendly approach for conjugating PSs and PCs and its scalability for industrial applications.

Abstract
Eugenia punicifolia (Kunth) DC (Myrtaceae) is a folk medicinal plant in the Brazilian Cerrado with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antiulcerogenic activities, etc., usually attributed to its phenolic compounds. Since these compounds are sensitive to heat and light, and to increase their applications, Hydroethanolic Extracts E. punicifolia (HEEP, EtOH:H2O 70% v/v) were encapsulated by freeze-drying in xanthan gum (mesh 80, HEEPX80; mesh 200, HEEPX200) in ratio 1:1(w/w). Flavonoids had the highest encapsulation efficiency in HEEPX80, with a total flavonoid content of 55.56%. The release profile at different pH levels showed that pH = 4.5, a relevant antioxidant activity for HEEPX80 and HEEPX200. Also, in HEEP-modified release, higher antioxidant activity was observed in more acidic media (pH 4.5) than in a more neutral medium (pH 7.4). From these results, we could infer that HEEP encapsulations with Xanthan gum could be a good alternative for preserving antioxidants in these extracts.

Abstract
This study investigates the effects of Aronia berries, their primary anthocyanins and other second metabolites-mimicking dietary anthocyanin consumption-on enhancing muscular myogenesis under chronic inflammation. Murine muscle satellite cells (MuSCs) were cultured ex vivo, allowing for expansion and differentiation into myotubes. Myogenic differentiation was disrupted by TNFα at both early and terminal stages, with treatment using Aronia berries applied at physiologically relevant concentrations alongside TNFα. The results demonstrated that Aronia berries treatments, particularly phenolic metabolites, significantly stimulated the proliferative capacity of MuSCs. Furthermore, Aronia berries treatment enhanced early-stage myogenesis, marked by increased MymX and MyoG expression and nascent myotube formation, with metabolites showing the most pronounced effects. Aronia berry powder and individual anthocyanins exerted milder regulatory effects. Similar trends were observed during terminal differentiation, where Aronia berries treatment promoted myotube growth and inhibited TNFα-induced inflammatory atrophic ubiquitin-conjugating activity. Additionally, the secondary metabolites of Aronia berries significantly prevented muscle-specific ubiquitination in the dexamethasone-induced atrophy model. Overall, the treatment with Aronia berries enhanced myogenesis in a cellular model of chronic muscular inflammation, with Aronia-derived metabolites showing the strongest response, likely through TLR4/NF-κB modulation. In this case, enhanced regeneration capacity and anti-atrophy potential were associated with TLR4/NF-κB modulation.

Abstract
The burgeoning field of cancer theranostics has been significantly advanced by the development of Metal-Phenolic Networks (MPNs), a new class of supramolecular architectures that integrate the advantages of metals and polyphenols. This review focuses on MPNs and their promising applications in cancer theranostics. Through a systematic literature search spanning from 2010 to 2023 in databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The period of search was justified by the rapid evolution of nanomaterials in cancer therapy, with MPNs emerging as a significant player in biomedical applications within the specified timeframe. This review discusses the classification and structure of polyphenolic compounds, as well as their mechanisms of action in cancer treatment. The applications of MPNs in chemotherapy drug delivery, photothermal therapy, chemodynamic therapy, biomedical imaging, and synergistic therapy are especially detailed. The authors emphasize the significance of MPNs in cancer nanomedicine and look forward to their future development directions.

Abstract
Multi-drug resistance is recognized as a significant worldwide public health concern in the current century. Biofilm formation further exacerbates bacterial resistance to antibacterial medications, host immunological responses, and phagocytosis, resulting in long-lasting chronic illnesses. Investigating natural resources is a very potent approach for developing alternative anti-infective medications to effectively control multi-drug resistant bacterial infections. In this study, a unique mushroom species namely Pleurotus platypus had been discovered from the Terai-Duars region of West Bengal, India. The myco-chemical profiling and preliminary chemical analysis of Pleurotus platypus methanolic extract determined the significant presence of metabolites belonging to several major chemical classes such as flavonoid, alkaloid, triterpenoid, polyphenol, benzoic acids, coumarin, flavone etc. Most intriguingly, the extract possessed effective antibacterial, antibiofilm and antivirulence properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, one of the most notable drug-resistant opportunistic and nosocomial pathogens. Mechanistically, the mushroom extract enhanced the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) inside the targeted bacteria, causing alterations in membrane potential, damage to the cellular membrane and further release of intracellular DNA, destined to cell death. Moreover, the methanolic extract reported the eradication of pre-existing biofilms from the urinary catheter surface, hinting towards its future application in the related field. To summarize, Pleurotus platypus methanolic extract could be an excellent alternative antibacterial and antibiofilm therapeutic candidate for the effective management of Staphylococcus infections with improved outcome.

Abstract
Bioactive food ingredients contribute to the promotion and maintenance of human health and wellbeing. However, these functional ingredients often exhibit low biopotency after food processing or gastrointestinal transit. Well-designed oral delivery systems can increase the ability of bioactive food ingredients to resist harsh environments inside and outside the human body, as well as allow for controlled or triggered release of bioactives to specific sites in the gastrointestinal tract or other tissues and organs. This review presents the characteristics of common bioactive food ingredients and then highlights the barriers to their biopotency. It also discusses various oral delivery strategies and carrier types that can be used to overcome these biopotency barriers, with a focus on recent advances in the field. Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of different delivery strategies are highlighted. Finally, the current challenges facing the development of food-grade oral delivery systems are addressed, and areas where future research can lead to new advances and industrial applications of these systems are proposed.

Abstract
The imperative need to produce safe foodstuffs using environmentally sustainable practices has highlighted the incorporation of legumes in human and animal diets as an emerging nutritional staple. Since legumes comprise a family of plants known to display an extensive agricultural diversity with significant bioactivities, we report herein the exploitation outcome of the nutritional and bio-functional content of hay, derived from the post-harvest aerial parts of eight novel-improved Greek cultivars belonging to the following six taxa: Larthyrus sativus L., Medicago sativa L., Cicer arietinum L., Pisum sativum L., Vicia faba L., and Phaseolus vulgaris L. In specific, the phytochemical content of their hay extracts was screened against the presence of 37 fatty acids and 67 polyphenols using, respectively, GC-FID and LC-MS/MS instruments, while the determination of their total phenolic and tannin contents was achieved with spectrophotometric methods. In this respect, the presence of 26 different fatty acids was detected of which the acids linoleic, linolenic and palmitic were traced in all extracts in concentrations exceeding the 10 mg/g, while the oleic acid was determined as the major component of C. arietinum (77.58 mg/g), V. faba (36.11 mg/g), and L. sativus (12.89 mg/g) extracts. In addition, 30 different phenolics were traced as extracts' components with the most abundant the molecule of isoquercetin, which was present in six extracts and isoliquiritigenin, calycosin, and chlorogenic acid which were detected in five extracts. Finally, the antioxidant properties of the extracts were evaluated by performing both DPPH• and FRAP assays, which highlighted the V. faba extract as the most potent in both tests, followed by the extracts of P. sativum and P. vulgaris. Results herein are indicative of the significant advances achieved, for the improvement of investigated plant cultivars with respect to their utilization as nutritional crops, since these novel cultivars hays have been found to contain significant amounts of essential nutrients in the form of fatty acids along with bioactive ingredients in the form of polyphenols, while simultaneously they were determined as deprived of tannins that constitute essential anti-nutritional factors.

Abstract
Bletilla striata has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat a variety of health diseases. Currently, metabolic causes of differences in medicinal values are unknown, due to the lack of a large-scale and comprehensive investigation of metabolites in Bletilla species. In order to gain a better understanding of the major chemical constituents responsible for the medicinal value, this study aimed to explore the metabolomic differences among three Bletilla species (Bletilla striata: Bs, Bletilla ochracea: Bo and Bletilla formosana: Bf). There were 258 different metabolites between 'Bo' and 'Bf', the contents of 109 metabolites had higher abundance, while 149 metabolites showed less accumulation. There were 165 different metabolites between the 'Bs' and 'Bf', content of 72 metabolites was increased and content of 93 metabolites was decreased. There were 239 different metabolites between the 'Bs' and 'Bo', content of 145 metabolites was increased and content of 94 metabolites was decreased. In the Bo_vs_Bf, Bs_vs_Bf and Bs_vs_Bo groups, the major differential categories were flavonoids, phenolic acids, organic acids and alkaloids. Moreover, the differential metabolites were clustered into clear and distinct profiles via K-means analysis. In addition, the major differential categories were flavonoids, phenolic acids, organic acids and alkaloids. The 'Flavonoid biosynthesis' (ko00941) and 'Phenylalanine metabolism' (ko00360) pathways were significantly enriched in Bo_vs_Bf, Bs_vs_Bf and Bs_vs_Bo comparisons. These results clarify the metabolomics in different Bletilla species, as well as providing basis for the phamaceutical value of novel species of Bletilla.

Abstract
The pressing global issue of organic pollutants, particularly phenolic compounds derived primarily from industrial wastes, poses a significant threat to the environment. Although progress has been made in the development of low-cost materials for phenolic compound removal, their effectiveness remains limited. Thus, there is an urgent need for novel technologies to comprehensively address this issue. In this context, MXenes, known for their exceptional physicochemical properties, have emerged as highly promising candidates for the remediation of phenolic pollutants. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and critical evaluation of MXene-based technologies for the removal of phenolic pollutants, focusing on the following key aspects: (1) The classification and categorization of phenolic pollutants, highlighting their adverse environmental impacts, and emphasizing the crucial need for their removal. (2) An in-depth discussion on the synthesis methods and properties of MXene-based composites, emphasizing their suitability for environmental remediation. (3) A detailed analysis of MXene-based adsorption, catalysis, photocatalysis, and hybrid processes, showcasing current advancements in MXene modification and functionalization to enhance removal efficiency. (4) A thorough examination of the removal mechanisms and stability of MXene-based technologies, elucidating their operating conditions and stability in pollutant removal scenarios. (5) Finally, this review concludes by outlining future challenges and opportunities for MXene-based technologies in water treatment, facilitating their potential applications. This comprehensive review provides valuable insights and innovative ideas for the development of versatile MXene-based technologies tailored to combat water pollution effectively.

Abstract
Rutin is a polyphenol with beneficial pharmacological properties. However, its bioavailability is often compromised due to low solubility and poor stability. Encapsulation technologies, such as emulsion systems, have been proven to be promising delivery vehicles for enhancing the bioavailability of bioactive compounds. Thus, this study was proposed and designed to investigate the colonic targeting and colonic fermentation characteristics of rutin-loaded ovalbumin-ferulic acid-polysaccharide (OVA-FA-PS) complex emulsions. The results indicate that OVA-FA-PS emulsion effectively inhibits the degradation of rutin active substances and facilitates its transport of rutin to the colon. The analysis revealed that the OVA-FA-κ-carrageenan emulsion loaded with rutin exhibited superior elasticity and colon targeting properties compared to the OVA-FA-hyaluronic acid or OVA-FA-sodium alginate emulsions loaded with rutin in the composite emulsion. Additionally, it was observed that the rutin loaded within the OVA-FA-κ-carrageenan emulsion underwent degradation and was converted to 4-hydroxybenzoic acid during colonic fermentation.

Abstract
A precursor feeding strategy was used for the first time in agitated microshoot cultures of Aronia × prunifolia. This strategy involved the addition of biogenetic precursors of simple phenolic acids (phenylalanine, cinnamic acid, and benzoic acid) and depsides (caffeic acid) into the culture media, with an assessment of its effect on the production of these bioactive compounds. The in vitro cultures were maintained in Murashige-Skoog medium (1 mg/L BAP and 1 mg/L NAA). Precursors at five concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mmol/L) were fed into the medium at the time of culture initiation (point "0") and independently on the 10th day of growth cycles. The contents of 23 compounds were determined in methanolic extracts of biomass collected after 20 days of growth cycles using an HPLC method. All extracts contained the same four depsides (chlorogenic, neochlorogenic, rosmarinic, and cryptochlorogenic acids) and the same four simple phenolic acids (protocatechuic, vanillic, caffeic, and syringic acids). Chlorogenic and neochlorogenic acids were the predominant compounds in all extracts (max. 388.39 and 263.54 mg/100 g d.w.). The maximal total contents of all compounds were confirmed after feeding with cinnamic acid (5 mmol/L, point "0") and caffeic acid (10 mmol/L, point "0"), which caused a 2.68-fold and 2.49-fold increase in the contents of the estimated compounds vs. control cultures (603.03 and 558.48 mg/100 g d.w., respectively). The obtained results documented the efficacy of the precursor feeding strategy in enhancing the production of bioactive compounds in agitated cultures of A. × prunifolia and suggest a potential practical application value.

Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a severe clinical syndrome characterized by rapid deterioration of renal function caused by a variety of pathogeneses. Natural polyphenols have been considered to have potential in the treatment of AKI due to their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, but their low bioavailability in vivo limits their efficacy. Polyphenol nanoparticles based on a nano-delivery system show good effects in reducing kidney injury, improving renal function and promoting renal tissue repair, and brings new hope and possibility for the treatment of AKI. This review provides an overview of the common characteristics, treatments, and associated adverse effects of AKI. The classification and bioavailability of polyphenols as well as their therapeutic role in AKI and potential possible effects are outlined. The potential therapeutic effects of polyphenol-based nanoparticles on AKI and the underlying mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract
Advances in the understanding of bioavailability and metabolism of bioactive compounds have been achieved primarily through targeted or semi-targeted metabolomics approaches using the hypothesis of potential metabolized compounds. The recent development of untargeted metabolomics approaches can present great advantages in this field, such as in the discovery of new metabolized compounds or to study the metabolism of compounds from multiple matrices simultaneously. Thus, this study proposes the use of an untargeted metabolomics strategy based on HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS for the study of bioavailability and metabolism of bioactive compounds from different vegetal sources. Specifically, this study has been applied to plasma samples collected in an acute human intervention study using three matrices (Hibiscus sabdariffa, Silybum marianum and Theobroma cacao). This approach allowed the selection of those significant variables associated with exogenous metabolites derived from the consumption of bioactive compounds for their subsequent identification. As a result, 14, 25 and 3 potential metabolites associated with supplement intake were significantly detected in the plasma samples from volunteers who ingested the H. sabdariffa (HS), S. marianum (SM) and T. cacao (TC) extracts. Furthermore, Tmax values have been computed for each detected compound. The results highlight the potential of untargeted metabolomics for rapid and comprehensive analysis when working with a wide range of exogenous metabolites from different plant sources in biological samples.

Abstract
A number of native Brazilian plant species are under exploited by the scientific community, despite the country's precious biodiversity. The vast majority of native Brazilian fruits (NBF) is source of compounds that provide many health benefits and can potentially be used to prevent diseases and formulate high-added value products. This review covers the scientific research over the last decade (2012-2022) on eight NBF, and focuses on information about the production and market panorama, physical description, physicochemical characterization, nutritional composition, their functional value of bioactive compounds and health benefits, as well as the potential for utilizations for each. The studies herein compiled reveal the outstanding nutritional value of these NBF. They are sources of vitamins, fibers, minerals and bioactive compounds that exhibit antioxidant activity, and they contain phytochemicals with anti-inflammatory action, anti-obesity and other functions that bring many health benefits to consumers. NBF can be also used as raw material for multiple products such as nectars, juices, jams, frozen pulps, liquor, among others. The dissemination of knowledge about NBF has fundamental implications worldwide.

Abstract
The Brassicaceae genus consists of many economically important mustards of value for food and medicinal purposes, namely Asian mustard (Brassica juncea), ball mustard (Neslia paniculata), black mustard (B. nigra), garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), hedge mustard (Sisymbrium officinale), Asian hedge mustard (S. orientale), oilseed rape (B. napus), rapeseed (B. rapa), treacle mustard (Erysimum repandum), smooth mustard (S. erysimoides), white ball mustard (Calepina irregularis), white mustard (Sinapis alba), and Canola. Some of these are commercially cultivated as oilseeds to meet the global demand for a healthy plant-derived oil, high in polyunsaturated fats, i.e., B. napus and B. juncea. Other species are foraged from the wild where they grow on roadsides and as a weed of arable land, i.e., E. repandum and S. erysimoides, and harvested for medicinal uses. These plants contain a diverse range of bioactive natural products including sulfur-containing glucosinolates and other potentially valuable compounds, namely omega-3-fatty acids, terpenoids, phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, tannins, S-methyl cysteine sulfoxide, and trace-elements. Various parts of these plants and many of the molecules that are produced throughout the plant have been used in traditional medicines and more recently in the mainstream pharmaceutical and food industries. This study relates the uses of mustards in traditional medicines with their bioactive molecules and possible mechanisms of action and provides an overview of the current knowledge of Brassicaceae oilseeds and mustards, their phytochemicals, and their biological activities.

Abstract
Wound healing involves a carefully regulated sequence of events, encompassing pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory stages, tissue regeneration, and remodeling. However, in individuals with diabetes, this process gets disrupted due to dysregulation caused by elevated glucose levels and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the bloodstream. Consequently, the pro-inflammatory stage is prolonged, while the anti-inflammatory phase is delayed, leading to impaired tissue regeneration and remodeling with extended healing time. Furthermore, the increased glucose levels in open wounds create an environment conducive to microbial growth and tissue sepsis, which can escalate to the point of limb amputation. Managing diabetic wounds requires meticulous care and monitoring due to the lack of widely available preventative and therapeutic measures. Existing clinical interventions have limitations, such as slow recovery rates, high costs, and inefficient drug delivery methods. Therefore, exploring alternative avenues to develop effective wound-healing treatments is essential. Nature offers a vast array of resources in the form of secondary metabolites, notably polyphenols, known for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, glucose-regulating, and cell growth-promoting properties. Additionally, nanoparticles synthesized through environmentally friendly methods hold promise for wound healing applications in diabetic and non-diabetic conditions. This review provides a comprehensive discussion and summary of the potential wound-healing abilities of specific natural polyphenols and their nanoparticles. It explores the mechanisms of action underlying their efficacy and presents effective formulations for promoting wound-healing activity.

Abstract
Hydroxycinnamic acids, known for their health benefits and widespread presence in plant-based food, undergo complex transformations during high-temperature processing. Recent studies revealed a high browning potential of hydroxycinnamic acids and reactive Maillard reaction intermediates, but the role of phenolic compounds in the early stage of these reactions is not unambiguously understood. Therefore, we investigated the influence of caffeic acid and ferulic acid on the nonenzymatic browning of arabinose, galactose, and/or alanine, focusing on the implications on the formation of relevant early-stage Maillard intermediates and phenol-deriving products. Contrary to previous assumptions, hydroxycinnamic acids were found to promote nonenzymatic browning instead of solely trapping reactive intermediates. This was reflected by an intense browning, which was attributed to the formation of heterogeneous phenol-containing Maillard products. Although, caffeic acid is more reactive than ferulic acid, the formation of reactive furan derivatives and of heterogeneous phenol-containing colorants was promoted in the presence of both hydroxycinnamic acids.

Abstract
The need to solvate and encapsulate hydro-sensitive molecules drives noticeable trends in the applications of cyclodextrins in the pharmaceutical industry, in foods, polymers, materials, and in agricultural science. Among them, β-cyclodextrin is one of the most used for the entrapment of phenolic acid compounds to mask the bitterness of wheat bran. In this regard, there is still a need for good data and especially for a robust predictive model that assesses the bitterness masking capabilities of β-cyclodextrin for various phenolic compounds. This study uses a dataset of 20 phenolic acids docked into the β-cyclodextrin cavity to generate three different binding constants. The data from the docking study were combined with topological, topographical, and quantum-chemical features from the ligands in a machine learning-based structure-activity relationship study. Three different models for each binding constant were computed using a combination of the genetic algorithm (GA) and multiple linear regression (MLR) approaches. The developed ML/QSAR models showed a very good performance, with high predictive ability and correlation coefficients of 0.969 and 0.984 for the training and test sets, respectively. The models revealed several factors responsible for binding with cyclodextrin, showing positive contributions toward the binding affinity values, including such features as the presence of six-membered rings in the molecule, branching, electronegativity values, and polar surface area.

Abstract
A family of bifunctional dihetarylmethanes and dibenzoxanthenes is assembled via a reaction of acetals containing a 2-chloroacetamide moiety with phenols and related oxygen-containing heterocycles. These compounds demonstrated selective antitumor activity associated with the induction of cell apoptosis and inhibition of the process of glycolysis. In particular, bis(heteroaryl)methane containing two 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one moieties combine excellent in vitro antitumor efficacy with an IC50 of 1.7 µM in HuTu-80 human duodenal adenocarcinoma models with a high selectivity index of 73. Overall, this work highlights the therapeutic potential of dimeric compounds assembled from functionalized acetals and builds a starting point for the development of a new family of anticancer agents.

Abstract
Phenolic acids still gain significant attention due to their potential antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. In this study, we have investigated the antimicrobial of six phenolic acids, namely chlorogenic, caffeic, p-coumaric, rosmarinic, gallic and tannic acids in the concentration range 0.5-500 μM, against Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide colorimetric assay. Additionally, the cytotoxic effects of these phenolic acids on two cancer cell lines, the colorectal adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cell line and Dukes' type C colorectal adenocarcinoma DLD-1 cell line was examined. To further understand the molecular properties of these phenolic acids, quantum chemical calculations were performed using the Gaussian 09W program. Parameters such as ionization potential, electron affinity, electronegativity, chemical hardness, chemical softness, dipole moment, and electrophilicity index were obtained. The lipophilicity properties represented by logP parameter was also discussed. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of six phenolic acids, compounds deliberately selected due to their chemical structure. They are derivatives of benzoic or cinnamic acids with the increasing number of hydroxyl groups in the aromatic ring. The integration of experimental and computational methodologies provides a knowledge of the molecular characteristics of bioactive compounds and partial explanation of the relationship between the molecular structure and biological properties. This knowledge aids in guiding the development of bioactive components for use in dietary supplements, functional foods and pharmaceutical drugs.

Abstract
Several hallmarks of metabolic syndrome, such as dysregulation in the glucose and lipid metabolism, endothelial dysfunction, insulin resistance, low-to-medium systemic inflammation, and intestinal microbiota dysbiosis, represent a pathological bridge between metabolic syndrome and diabesity, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative disorders. This review aims to highlight some therapeutic strategies against metabolic syndrome involving integrative approaches to improve lifestyle and daily diet. The beneficial effects of foods containing antioxidant polyphenols, intestinal microbiota control, and physical activity were also considered. We comprehensively examined a large body of published articles involving basic, animal, and human studie, as well as recent guidelines. As a result, dietary polyphenols from natural plant-based antioxidants and adherence to the Mediterranean diet, along with physical exercise, are promising complementary therapies to delay or prevent the onset of metabolic syndrome and counteract diabesity and cardiovascular diseases, as well as to protect against neurodegenerative disorders and cognitive decline. Modulation of the intestinal microbiota reduces the risks associated with MS, improves diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and exerts neuroprotective action. Despite several studies, the estimation of dietary polyphenol intake is inconclusive and requires further evidence. Lifestyle interventions involving physical activity and reduced calorie intake can improve metabolic outcomes.

Abstract
Physochlaina is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Solanaceae and consists of 10 species distributed in various Asian countries. The species of the genus have been traditionally used to cure a variety of illnesses due to their highly valuable medicinal properties, including cancer, asthma, cough, weakness, stomachache, diarrhea, swelling, spasms, toothache, boils, ulcers, rheumatic pain, chronic bronchitis, gastric problems, abdominal pain, palpitation, and insomnia. The species have gained significant attention due to their remarkable ethnopharmacological and ethnomedicinal significance. The researchers have isolated so far 71 biologically active secondary metabolites from different Physochlaina species, which include flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins, phenolic acids, iridoids, and sterols. These compounds exhibit diverse biological activities, such as antibacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and anticancer properties. The present review has been compiled with the intention of providing a comprehensive overview of the botany, distribution, traditional uses, phytochemical profile, and biological activities of the genus Physochlaina for future exploration of plant-based drugs and therapeutic approaches. The present review contributes to understanding the significant pharmacological potential of Physochlaina species and unraveling their chemical composition, highlighting their relevance in developing therapeutic agents. Till date, numerous pharmacological properties and isolated phytochemicals of Physochlaina species that support the species traditional and ethnobotanical history have been documented in a number of scientific publications. However, greater emphasis should be paid to in vivo investigations on various extracts and their phytoconstituents as well as mechanistic analysis to help drug developers better understand how to use Physochlaina species as significant therapeutic resources for herbal formulations using various techniques.

Abstract
To thoroughly understand the profile of phenolic phytochemicals in kidney bean seeds cultivated in a cold region, the extractions, contents, antioxidant activities, compositions of free and bound phenols in the seed coat and cotyledon, and also relevant color attributes, were investigated. The results indicated that ultrasound-assisted extraction was an efficient method for free phenols. The bound phenols in seed coat and cotyledon were released more efficiently by alkali-acid and acid-alkali sequential hydrolysis, respectively. Under the optimized extractions, total phenols (TPC), flavonoids (TFC), and anthocyanins (TAC) ranged in 7.81-32.89 mg GAE/g dw, 3.23-15.65 mg RE/g dw, and 0-0.21 mg CE/g dw in the whole seeds of the five common kidney beans. There was a big difference in phenolic distribution between red and white seeds. From whole seed, the phenols in the four red cultivars mainly existed in free state (78.84%) and seed coat (71.56%), while the phenols in the white 'Sark' divided equally between free (51.18%) and bound (48.82%) states and consisted chiefly in cotyledon (81.58%). The correlation analyses showed that the antioxidant activities were significantly and positively correlated with TPC and TFC. The phenolic attributes were closely associated with the color of the seed coat. Red seeds had higher total contents of phenols than white seeds. TAC had a positively significant correlation with redness. Brightness and yellowness showed a negatively significant correlation with TPC, TFC, and antioxidant capacities, which were necessarily linked with redness degree and spot in red seeds. The spotted red 'Yikeshu' with the most outstanding performance on phenolic attributes was selected to analyze phenolic compounds with UHPLC-QE-MS. Among the 85 identified phenolics, 2 phenolic acids and 10 flavonoids were dominant. The characteristic phenolics in free and bound states were screened in both seed coat and cotyledon, respectively. The available information on the phenolic profile may expand the utilization of kidney beans as a nutritional ingredient in the food industry.

Abstract
Natural polyphenols have drawbacks such as instability and low bioavailability, which can be overcome by encapsulated slow-release systems. Natural polymer hydrogels are ideal materials for slow-release systems because of their high biocompatibility. In this study, Longzhua mushroom polysaccharide hydrogel (LMPH) was used to encapsulate rambutan peel polyphenols (RPP) and delay their release time to improve their stability and bioavailability. The mechanical properties, rheology, stability, swelling properties, water-holding capacity, RPP loading, and slow-release behavior of LMPH were investigated. The results showed that LMPH has adequate mechanical and rheological properties, high thermal stability, excellent swelling and water-holding capacity, and good self-healing behavior. Increasing the polysaccharide content not only improved the hardness (0.17-1.13 N) and water-holding capacity of LMPH (90.84-99.32%) but also enhanced the encapsulation efficiency of RPP (93.13-99.94%). The dense network structure slowed down the release of RPP. In particular, LMPH5 released only 61.58% at 48 h. Thus, a stable encapsulated slow-release system was fabricated using a simple method based on the properties of LMPH. The developed material has great potential for the sustained release and delivery of biologically active substances.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION With an increasing interest in healthy and affordable cereal intake, efforts are made toward exploiting underutilized cereals with high nutritional values. OBJECTIVES The current study aims to explore the metabolome diversity in 14 cultivars of chia and quinoa collected from Germany, Austria, and Egypt, compared with wheat and oat as major cereals. MATERIAL AND METHODS The samples were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Multivariate data analysis (MVA) was employed for sample classification and markers characterization. RESULTS A total of 114 metabolites were quantified (sugars, alcohols, organic and amino acids/nitrogenous compounds, fatty acids/esters), but the inorganic and phenolic acids were only identified. Fatty acids were the major class followed by amino acids in quinoa and chia. Chia and oats were richer in sucrose. Quinoa encompassed higher amino acids. Quinoa and chia were rich in essential amino acids. Higher levels of unsaturated fatty acids especially omega 6 and omega 9 were detected in quinoa versus omega 3 in chia compared with oat and wheat, whereas ω6/ω3 fatty acid ratio of chia was the lowest. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive metabolite profiling of these pseudo cereals. CONCLUSION Quinoa and chia, especially red chia, are more nutritionally valuable compared with oat and wheat because of their compositional profile of free amino acids, organic acids, and essential fatty acids, besides their low ω6/ω3 fatty acid ratio. Such results pose them as inexpensive alternative to animal proteins and encourage their inclusion in infant formulas.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid is one of the most prominent bioactive phenolic acids with great pharmacological, cosmetic and nutritional value. The potential of Berula erecta in tissue culture was investigated for the production of chlorogenic acid and its elicitation combined with light of different wavelengths and low temperature. The content of chlorogenic acid in the samples was determined by HPLC-UV, while the content of total phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of their ethanol extracts were evaluated spectrophotometrically. The highest fresh and dry biomasses were obtained in plants grown at 23 °C. This is the first study in which chlorogenic acid has been identified and quantified in Berula erecta. The highest chlorogenic acid content was 4.049 mg/g DW. It was determined in a culture grown for 28 days after the beginning of the experiment at 12 °C and under blue light. The latter also contained the highest content of total phenolic compounds, and its extracts showed the highest antioxidant activity. Berula erecta could, potentially, be suitable for the in vitro production of chlorogenic acid, although many other studies should be conducted before implementation on an industrial scale.

Abstract
Phenolic acids are natural compounds with potential therapeutic effects against various diseases. However, their incorporation into food and pharmaceutical products is limited by challenges such as instability, low solubility, and reduced bioavailability. This systematic review summarizes recent advances in phenolic acid encapsulation using food-grade carrier systems, focusing on proteins, lipids, and polysaccharides. Encapsulation efficiency, release behavior, and bioavailability are examined, as well as the potential health benefits of encapsulated phenolic acids in food products. Strategies to address limitations of current encapsulation systems are also proposed. Encapsulation has emerged as a promising method to enhance the stability and bioavailability of phenolic acids in food products, and various encapsulation technologies have been developed for this purpose. The use of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates as carriers in food-grade encapsulation systems remains a common approach, but it is associated with certain limitations. Future research on phenolic acid encapsulation should focus on developing environmentally friendly, organic solvent-free, low-energy, scalable, and stable encapsulation systems, as well as co-encapsulation methods that combine multiple phenolic acids or phenolic acids with other bioactive substances to produce synergistic effects.

Abstract
Understanding the nuanced interplay between plant polyphenols and starch could have significant implications. For example, it could lead to the development of tailor-made starches for specific applications, from bakinag and brewing to pharmaceuticals and bioplastics. In addition, this knowledge could contribute to the formulation of functional foods with lower glycemic indexes or improved nutrient delivery. Variations in the complexes can be attributed to differences in molecular weight, structure, and even the content of the polyphenols. In addition, the unique structural characteristics of starches, such as amylose/amylopectin ratio and crystalline density, also contribute to the observed effects. Processing conditions and methods will always alter the formation of complexes. As the type of starch/polyphenol can have a significant impact on the formation of the complex, the selection of suitable botanical sources of starch/polyphenols has become a focus. Spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics is a convenient and accurate method for rapidly identifying starches/polyphenols and screening for the desired botanical source. Understanding these relationships is crucial for optimizing starch-based systems in various applications, from food technology to pharmaceutical formulations.

Abstract
Natural antibacterials have stood out in the last decade due to the growing demand for reducing chemical preservatives in food. In particular, natural phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites produced by plants for numerous functions including antimicrobial defence. Polyphenol has significant antimicrobial activity, but its antimicrobial properties are affected by the cell structure difference of bacteria, the concentration, type, and extraction method of polyphenol, and the treatment time of bacteria exposed to polyphenol. Therefore, this paper analyzed the antibacterial activity and mechanism of polyphenol as an antimicrobial agent. However, there remained significant considerations, including the interaction of polyphenols and food matrix, environmental temperature, and the effect of color and odor of some polyphenols on sensory properties of aquatic products, and the additive amount of polyphenols. On this basis, the application strategies of polyphenols as the antimicrobial agent in aquatic products preservation were reviewed.

Abstract
Ephedra species are among the most popular herbs used in traditional medicine for a long time. The ancient Chinese medical book "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" refers to the classic traditional Chinese medicine prescription Ge Gen decoction, which consists of seven herbs, including an Ephedra species. Ephedra species are utilized all over the world to treat symptoms of the common cold and coughs, and to combat major human diseases, such as asthma, cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular and digestive disorders, and microbial infections. This study aimed at identifying specific Ephedra species used traditionally in Morocco for therapeutic purposes. The plant parts, their preparation process, and the treated pathologies were identified and analyzed. The results revealed five ethnobotanically important species of Ephedra: Ephedra alata Decne, Ephedra altissima Desf., Ephedra distachya L., Ephedra fragilis Desf., and Ephedra nebrodensis Tineo. These species are used traditionally in Morocco for treating people with diabetes, cancer, rheumatism, cold and asthma, hypertension, influenza virus infection, and respiratory ailments. In addition, they are occasionally used as calefacient agents, to regulate weight, or for capillary care. Few studies have underlined the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of some of these Moroccan Ephedra species, but little information is available regarding the natural products at the origin of the bioactivities. Further phytochemical investigations and clinical data are encouraged to better support the use of these plants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study is to investigate the antiproliferative, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzyme activity capacities and phytochemical compositions of Thymus pectinatus (TP), Thymus convolutus (TC), which are endemic to Türkiye. Quantitative analysis of phenolic compounds in the extracts was conducted using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, targeting 53 phenolic compounds. RESULTS Rosmarinic acid, quinic acid, and cynaroside were identified as the major compounds, exhibiting quantitative variation in both extracts. The extracts had a high total phenolic content, with 113.57 ± 0.58 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g extract for TP and 130.52 ± 1.05 mg GAE/g extract for TC. Furthermore, although both extracts exhibited high total flavonoid content; the TP extract (75.12 ± 1.65 mg quercitin equivalents (QE)/g extract) displayed a higher flavonoid content than the TC extract (30.24 ± 0.74 mg QE/g extract) did. The extracts had a promising antiproliferative effect on C6, HeLa, and HT29 cancer cell lines with a less cytotoxic effect (10.5-14.2%) against normal cells. Both extracts exhibited very potent inhibitory activity against the xanthine oxidase enzyme, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration values of respectively 2.07 ± 0.03 μg mL-1 and 2.76 ± 0.06 μg mL-1 and moderate activity against tyrosinase and α-glucosidase. Docking simulations proved that rosmarinic acid and cynaroside, the major components of the extracts, were the most potent inhibitors of xanthine oxidase. According to antimicrobial activity results, the TC extract exhibited moderate activity against Staphylococcus aureus, and the TP extract had strong activity against both Enterococcus faecium and S. aureus. CONCLUSION These findings emphasize the beneficial effects of the two endemic Thymus species on human health and suggest their potential use as plant-derived bioactive agents. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Hippeastrum papilio (Amaryllidaceae) is a promising new source of galanthamine - an alkaloid used for the cognitive treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The biosynthesis and accumulation of alkaloids are tissue - and organ-specific. In the present study, histochemical localization of alkaloids in H. papilio's plant organs with Dragendorff's reagent, revealed their presence in all studied samples. Alkaloids were observed in vascular bundles, vacuoles, and intracellular spaces, while in other plant tissues and structures depended on the plant organ. The leaf parenchyma and the vascular bundles were indicated as alkaloid-rich structures which together with the high proportion of alkaloids in the phloem sap (49.3% of the Total Ion Current - TIC, measured by GC-MS) indicates the green tissues as a possible site of galanthamine biosynthesis. The bulbs and roots showed higher alkaloid content compared to the leaf parts. The highest alkaloid content was found in the inner bulb part. GC-MS metabolite profiling of H. papilio's root, bulb, and leaves revealed about 82 metabolites (>0.01% of TIC) in the apolar, polar, and phenolic acid fractions, including organic acids, fatty acids, sterols, sugars, amino acids, free phenolic acids, and conjugated phenolic acids. The most of organic and fatty acids were in the peak part of the root, while the outermost leaf was enriched with sterols. The outer and middle parts of the bulb had the highest amount of saccharides, while the peak part of the middle leaf had most of the amino acids, free and conjugated phenolic acids.

Abstract
Chia seeds have gained significant attention due to their unique composition and potential health benefits, including high dietary fibers, omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, and phenolic compounds. These components contribute to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effects, as well as their ability to improve glucose metabolism and dyslipidemia. Germination is recognized as a promising strategy to enhance the nutritional value and bioavailability of chia seeds. Chia seed sprouts have been found to exhibit increased essential amino acid content, elevated levels of dietary fiber and total phenols, and enhanced antioxidant capability. However, there is limited information available concerning the dynamic changes of bioactive compounds during the germination process and the key factors influencing these alterations in biosynthetic pathways. Additionally, the influence of various processing conditions, such as temperature, light exposure, and duration, on the nutritional value of chia seed sprouts requires further investigation. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the nutritional profile of chia seeds and the dynamic changes that occur during germination. Furthermore, the potential for tailored germination practices to produce chia sprouts with personalized nutrition, targeting specific health needs, is also discussed.

Abstract
Cruciferae brassica oilseed rape is the third largest oilseed crop in the world and the first in China, as well as a fertilizer-dependent crop. With the increased application of organic fertilizers from livestock manure in agricultural production in recent years, the resulting antibiotic pollution and its ecological health effects have attracted widespread attention. In this study, typical tetracycline and sulfonamide antibiotics tetracycline (TC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) were used to investigate the effects of antibiotics on rapeseed quality and oxidative stress at the level of secondary metabolism on the basis of examining the effects of the two drugs on the growth of soil-cultivated rapeseed seedlings. The results showed that both plant height and biomass of rapeseed seedlings were significantly suppressed and ROS were significantly induced in rapeseed by exposure to high concentrations (2.5 mg/kg) of TC and SMZ. Carotenoids, tocopherols, and SOD enzymes were involved in the oxidative stress response to scavenge free radicals in rapeseed, but phenolic acids and flavonoids contents were decreased, which reduced the quality of the seeds to some extent.

Abstract
Oleocanthal is a secoiridoid found in olive oil, which lately gained great scientific interest due to its important pharmacological spectrum and biological properties. However, limited data exist on the metabolic fate of oleocanthal in vivo, a commonly underestimated aspect in natural products research. Especially, its pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics have never been described so far. Thus, in the current study, a mouse-based protocol was designed, and oleocanthal was administered intraperitoneally in a standard dose of 5 mg/kg. In order to determine the PK parameters of oleocanthal or its metabolites, plasma samples were collected at 10 time points. Extraction and analysis protocols were developed and applied for the recovery and detection of oleocanthal in plasma, as well as the identification of its metabolites, using LC-HRMS/MS. Oleocanthal was not detected, proving the short lifetime of the compound in vivo, and 13 metabolites were identified. Among them, oleocanthalic acid and tyrosol sulfate were proposed as oleocanthal's biomarkers, in vivo. This is the first report associating oleocanthalic acid with oleocanthal administration in vivo, while its PK parameters, Tmax (T0) and Cmax (926 μg/mL), were also determined. The current study enlightens bioavailability and metabolism aspects of oleocanthal and suggests the association of specific metabolites with the biological effects attributed to oleocanthal administration. More studies are needed to give better insights into the metabolism and the mechanism of action of secoiridoids as well as to respond to identification challenges related to secoiridoid in vivo setups.

Abstract
This study addresses the effectiveness of ohmic heating technology (OH) for the sustainable recovery of phenolic compounds from Grape Pomace (GP) by hydroethanolic extraction. GP extracts biological potential was evaluated in terms of antioxidant activity, cytotoxicity and preventive effect against reactive oxygen species (ROS). To understand if GP extracts can be used as a functional ingredient, simulated gastrointestinal digestion was performed to evaluate the bioaccessibility. OH-assisted hydroethanolic extraction proved to be an effective process for the recovery of GP phenolic compounds with high antioxidant capacity. The digestion process increased the concentration of total phenolics and the biotransformation of high-molecular phenolics (anthocyanins, flavonoids and resveratrol) in simpler phenolic acids, improving bioaccessibility. GP extract displayed a selective action against cancer cells (Caco-2 and HeLa) and promoted ROS prevention. The results highlighted the ability of OH to extract bioactives from GP and its potential application as a nutraceutical or for functional food formulations.

Abstract
Citrus is an important type of fruit, with antioxidant bioactivity. However, the variations in the antioxidant ability of different tissues in citrus and its metabolic and molecular basis remain unclear. Here, we assessed the antioxidant capacities of 12 tissues from Citrus reticulata 'Ponkan', finding that young leaves and root exhibited the strongest antioxidant capacity. Secondary metabolites accumulated differentially in parts of the citrus plant, of which flavonoids were enriched in stem, leaf, and flavedo; phenolic acids were enriched in the albedo, while coumarins were enriched in the root, potentially explaining the higher antioxidant capacities of these tissues. The spatially specific accumulation of metabolites was related to the expression levels of biosynthesis-related genes such as chalcone synthase (CHS), chalcone isomerase (CHI), flavone synthase (FNS), O-methyltransferase (OMT), flavonoid-3'-hydroxylase (F3'H), flavonoid-6/8-hydroxylase (F6/8H), p-coumaroyl CoA 2'-hydroxylase (C2'H), and prenyltransferase (PT), among others, in the phenylpropane pathway. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) identified modules associated with flavonoids and coumarin content, among which we identified an OMT involved in coumarin O-methylation, and related transcription factors were predicted. Our study identifies key genes and metabolites influencing the antioxidant capacity of citrus, which could contribute to the enhanced understanding and utilization of bioactive citrus components.

Abstract
Food allergies are becoming ever more prevalent around the world. This pathology is characterized by the breakdown of oral tolerance to ingested food allergens, resulting in allergic reactions in subsequent exposures. Due to the possible severity of the symptoms associated with this pathology, new approaches to prevent it and reduce associated symptoms are of utmost importance. In this framework, dietary phenolic compounds appear as a tool with a not fully explored potential. Some phenolic compounds have been pointed to with the ability to modulate food allergies and possibly reduce their symptoms. These compounds can modulate food allergies through many different mechanisms, such as altering the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of potentially immunogenic peptides, by modulating the human immune system and by modulating the composition of the human microbiome that resides in the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract. This review deepens the state-of-the-art of the modulation of these mechanisms by phenolic compounds. While this review shows clear evidence that dietary supplementation with foods rich in phenolic compounds might constitute a new approach to the management of food allergies, it also highlights the need for further research to delve into the mechanisms of action of these compounds and decipher systematic structure/activity relationships.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Pluchea indica (L.) Less (family Asteraceae) is popularly consumed as a medicinal vegetable and used in ethnomedicine to treat various diseases including gastrointestinal problems such as dysentery and leucorrhoea, which are due to bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections. There have been numerous studies on the antimicrobial effects of the plant due to these ethnomedicine use. AIM OF THIS REVIEW This review is comprehensively discussed the information on the anti-infective properties of P. indica and its secondary metabolites, and highlight the potential of the plant as a new source of anti-infective agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS Scientific databases such as Scopus, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Wiley Online Library, and ACS Publications were used to gather the relevant information on the ability of P. indica to fight infections, with the leaves and roots receiving most of the attention. RESULTS Anti-bacterial, anti-mycobacterial, anti-malarial, and anti-viral activities have been the most exploited. Most studies were carried out on the crude extracts of the plant and in most studies the bioactive extracts were not standardized or chemically characterized. Several studies have reported the anti-infective activity of several bioactive components of P. indica including caffeoylquinic acids, terpenoid glycosides, thiophenes, and kaempferol. CONCLUSIONS The strong anti-infective effect and underlying mechanisms of the compounds provide insights into the potential of P. indica as a source of new leads for the development of anti-infective agents for use in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Anthocyanins extracted with deep eutectic solvent (NADES) (chlorine-chloride: xylitol, 5:2) were used to produce polyethylene oxide (PEO) composites through electrospinning technique, analyzing their microscopic and physical characteristics. The coated anthocyanins were then subjected to in vitro gastrointestinal digestion to evaluate their bioaccessibility compared to lyophilized jussara pulp. The remaining total anthocyanin content (TAC) after intestinal in vitro digestion did not change significantly among the assessed samples, and both showed around 30% recovery. The TAC recovery after the gastric phase, on the other hand, showed a major difference (70.84% vs. 48.13%), revealing that the composites fabricated by the electrospinning technique can significantly maintain anthocyanins NADES-extracted stability during the gastric phase of digestion, potentially allowing better absorption trough stomach wall. The results can be considered a first step to applying anthocyanins-encapsulated in foodstuff as a natural pigment.

Abstract
This comprehensive review examines the diverse classes of pharmacologically active compounds found in marine algae and their promising anti-inflammatory effects. The review covers various classes of anti-inflammatory compounds sourced from marine algae, including phenolic compounds, flavonoids, terpenoids, caretenoids, alkaloids, phlorotannins, bromophenols, amino acids, peptides, proteins, polysaccharides, and fatty acids. The anti-inflammatory activities of marine algae-derived compounds have been extensively investigated using in vitro and in vivo models, demonstrating their ability to inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines, chemokines, and enzymes involved in inflammation. Moreover, marine algae-derived compounds have exhibited immunomodulatory properties, regulating immune cell functions and attenuating inflammatory responses. Specific examples of compounds with notable anti-inflammatory activities are highlighted. This review provides valuable insights for researchers in the field of marine anti-inflammatory pharmacology and emphasizes the need for further research to harness the pharmacological benefits of marine algae-derived compounds for the development of effective and safe therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Quercus suber is considered a sustainable tree mainly due to its outer layer (cork) capacity to regenerate after each harvesting cycle. Cork bark is explored for several application; however, its industrial transformation generates a significant amount of waste. Recently, cork by-products have been studied as a supplier of bioactive ingredients. This work aimed to explore whether near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), a non-destructive analysis, can be employed as a screening device for selecting cork by-products with higher potential for bioactives extraction. A total of 29 samples of cork extracts were analysed regarding their qualitative composition. Partial least squares (PLS) models were developed for quantification purposes, and R2P and RER values of 0.65 and above 4, respectively, were obtained. Discrimination models, performed through PLS-DA, yielded around 80% correct predictions, revealing that four out of five of samples were correctly discriminated, thus revealing that NIR can be successfully applied for screening purposes.

Abstract
Locust bean pulp and gum extracts were prepared, and phytochemical tests based on color reactions and chromatographic analyzes were performed. A profile of seventy-six phenolic compounds was obtained by the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The main groups of phenolic compounds identified in the both extracts of Ceratonia siliqua L., were flavonoids, tannins and phenolic acids. Moreover, carob pulp and gum extracts were tested for their antimicrobial activity using disk diffusion tests which showed sensitivity of the different strains to the analyzed extracts at a concentration of 100 mg/mL. Additionally, the antioxidant activity of Ceratonia siliqua L. extracts was assessed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl acid test, which confirmed stronger antioxidant properties in the case of the pulp extract. To sum up, carob pulp and gum extracts present promising alternatives to synthetic additives within the medicinal industry, serving as potential antioxidant agents and preservatives that combat bacterial contamination, thereby offering a more natural approach to enhancing product safety and efficacy.

Abstract
Cinnamic acid and its derivatives represent attractive building blocks for the development of pharmacological tools. A series of piperoniloyl and cinnamoyl-based amides (6-9 a-f) have been synthesized and assayed against a wide panel of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, with the aim of finding promising anticancer agents. Among all twenty-four synthesized molecules, 7a, 7e-f, 9c, and 9f displayed the best antiproliferative activity. The induced G1 cell cycle arrest and the increase in apoptotic cell death was seen in FACS analysis and western Blotting in the colon tumor cell lines HCT116, SW480, LoVo, and HT29, but not in the nontumor cell line HCEC. In particular, 9f overcame the resistance of HT29 cells, which have a mutant p53 and BRAF. Furthermore, 9f, amide of piperonilic acid with the 3,4-dichlorobenzyl substituent upregulated p21, which is involved in cell cycle arrest as well as in apoptosis induction. Cinnamic acid derivatives might be potential anticancer compounds, useful for the development of promising anti-CRC agents.
