Abstract
Arrowroot starch (AS)-based films potential is influenced by its low-cost processing and high transparency packaging material but low tensile strength; hence, AS was blended with kappa-carrageenan (KC) to improve mechanical properties of AS-based films and enhance its potential use in food packaging or coating applications. AS-KC-based films were characterized based on structural, physicomechanical, thermal, pasting properties, and coating application in sweet cherry. The films demonstrated high tensile strength from 3.2 to 29.4 MPa and low elongation properties from 160.3 % to 1.9 %. Moreover, AS/KC films exhibited peak viscosities of 18.7 to 34.8 RVU, and thermal analysis depicted lower weight losses (59-45 %) compared to AS-based films (62 %). In addition, sweet cherry samples coated with AS/KC films and stored at 20 °C for 15 days depicted lower weight losses (26.6 %) compared to non-coated samples (>41 %), which indicated the potential use of the film's coating application in extending the shelf life and quality of fresh fruits.

Abstract
Starch and chitosan, polysaccharides derived from natural sources, have significant potential across various domains. Starch is extracted from starch-bearing plants, such as potatoes, whereas chitosan is obtained from the exoskeletons of marine animals, fungi and insects. However, the original forms of starch and chitosan have several limitations, such as low solubility and weak mechanical strength. Interestingly, the combined effects of starch and chitosan resulted in the development of starch-chitosan blends with markedly improved functional properties. These blends demonstrated high tensile strength, improved hydrophilicity and increased adsorption capacity. Furthermore, modification of starch-chitosan blends by techniques such as crosslinking and incorporation of other functional materials contributes to diverse characteristics and functionalities. This review addresses a crucial gap in the literature by providing an overview and up-to-date analysis of starch-chitosan blends. The preparation methods and functional properties of these blends in various forms, such as films, beads and hydrogels, have been extensively discussed. Emphasis is placed on the versatile applications of these blends in research, development and industries such as pharmaceuticals, wastewater treatment, agriculture and food technology. This review aims to provide an insightful overview of starch-chitosan blends and stimulate broader interdisciplinary research interests. By providing concluding insights and prospects, this review highlights the potential for further exploration of the impact of starch-chitosan blends on consumers and the environment.

Abstract
Chitosan based films endowed with antibacterial features have witnessed remarkable progress as potential wound dressings. The current study aimed at appraising the effects of the molar mass of chitosan (MM) and the film casting acids on the properties of unplasticized chitosan films and plasticized MSO-embedded chitosan films in order to provide best suited film formulation as a potential candidate for wound dressing application. The prepared films were functionally characterized in terms of their qualitative assessment, thickness, density, swelling behavior, water vapor barrier, mechanical and antibacterial properties. Overall, all chitosan films displayed thickness lower than the human dermis even though thicker and denser films were produced with lactic acid. Assessment of the swelling behavior revealed that only high molar mass (HMM) chitosan films may be regarded as absorbent dressings. Moreover, unplasticized HMM lactate (HMM-LA) films furnished lower stiffness and higher percent strain break as compared to acetate films, due to the plasticizing effect of the remaining lactic acid as alluded by the FTIR analysis. Meanwhile, they provided suitable level of moisture and indicated substantial antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli, the most commonly opportunistic bacteria found in infected skin wound. Plasticized chitosan films doped with MSO were significantly thicker and more permeable to water compared to unplasticized films. Furthermore, MSO significantly potentiate the antibacterial effect of chitosan-based films. Therefore, plasticized HMM-LA/MSO chitosan film flashing good swelling behavior, adequate WVTR and WVP, suitable mechanical properties and antibacterial performances substantiated to be a promising antibacterial dressing material for moderately exuding wounds.

Abstract
Materials with a soft tissue regenerative capacity can be produced using biopolymer scaffolds and nanomaterials, which allow injured tissue to recover without any side effects or limitations. Four formulations were prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), with silicon dioxide nanoparticles (NPs-SiO2) incorporated using the freeze-drying method at a temperature of -50 °C. TGA and DSC showed no change in thermal degradation, with glass transition temperatures around 74 °C and 77 °C. The interactions between the hydroxyl groups of PVA and CS remained stable. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the incorporation of NPs-SiO2 complemented the freeze-drying process, enabling the dispersion of the components on the polymeric matrix and obtaining structures with a small pore size (between 30 and 60 μm) and large pores (between 100 and 160 μm). The antimicrobial capacity analysis of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria revealed that the scaffolds inhibited around 99% of K. pneumoniae, E. cloacae, and S. aureus ATCC 55804. The subdermal implantation analysis demonstrated tissue growth and proliferation, with good biocompatibility, promoting the healing process for tissue restoration through the simultaneous degradation and formation of type I collagen fibers. All the results presented expand the boundaries in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine by highlighting the crucial role of nanoparticles in optimizing scaffold properties.

Abstract
The second and most often utilized natural polymer is chitosan (CS), a naturally existing amino polysaccharide that is produced by deacetylating chitin. Numerous applications have been the subject of in-depth investigation due to its non-hazardous, biologically compatible, and biodegradable qualities. Chitosan's characteristics, such as mucoadhesion, improved permeability, controlled release of drugs, in situ gelation process, and antibacterial activity, depend on its amino (-NH2) and hydroxyl groups (-OH). This study examines the latest findings in chitosan research, including its characteristics, derivatives, preliminary research, toxic effects, pharmaceutical kinetics and chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) based for non-parenteral delivery of drugs. Chitosan and its derivatives have a wide range of physical and chemical properties that make them highly promising for use in the medicinal and pharmaceutical industries. The characteristics and biological activities of chitosan and its derivative-based nanomaterials for the delivery of drugs, therapeutic gene transfer, delivery of vaccine, engineering tissues, evaluations, and other applications in medicine are highlighted in detail in the current review. Together with the techniques for binding medications to nanoparticles, the application of the nanoparticles was also dictated by their physical properties that were classified and specified. The most recent research investigations on delivery of drugs chitosan nanoparticle-based medication delivery methods applied topically, through the skin, and through the eyes were considered.

Abstract
The poor mechanical properties, low water-resistance, and limited antimicrobial activity of chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based film limited its application in aquatic product preservation. Herein, bacterial cellulose (BC) was used to load ginger essential oil (GEO). The effects of the addition of BC and different concentrations of GEO on the physicochemical and antimicrobial activities of films were systematically evaluated. Finally, the application of sea bass fillets was investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) analysis indicated dense networks were formed, which was verified by enhanced physical properties. The mechanical properties, barrier properties, and antimicrobial activities enhanced as GEO concentration increased. CPB0.8 (0.8 % GEO) film had better tensile strength (TS) and barrier performance, improved the quality, and extended the shelf-life of sea bass for another 6 days at least. Overall, active films are potential packaging materials for aquatic products.

Abstract
Edible mealworms can be farmed to produce high-quality nutrients and proteins, useful as ingredients in human and animal foods. During this process biological waste is produced. This work explores the usage of the biological waste as source to produce chitin and chitosan with different potential applications. Different waste fractions were processed, and the feasibility of chitin isolation was assessed. Chitosan was derived, and films were fabricated and tested for intended uses. Data indicate that biopolymers with different properties can be obtained from multiple biological waste fractions. All samples show antibacterial activity, while chitosan films derived from molt show interesting properties for packaging purposes. Films also trigger the expression of anti-inflammatory phenotype markers in macrophage cells, which may be useful for tissue engineering implantation purposes. Altogether, biological waste from insect farming can be used to extract chitin and chitosan with different properties, and therefore, suitable for different applications.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to create CS-POP composite films by blending Pleurotus ostreatus stalk polysaccharides (POP) and chitosan (CS). The effects of adding different concentrations (0 %, 0.25 %, 0.5 %, 0.75 %, and 1 %) of POP on the mechanical, barrier, and optical properties of the CS films were investigated. When the POP content is at 0.5 %, the tensile strength of the composite film reaches its maximum value at 13.691 MPa, showing a significant improvement compared to the tensile strength of the pure CS film. The structure of the CS and CS-POP composite films was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, TGA and SEM. The results indicate that due to the interaction between the two types of CS and POP, the formation of Schiff base, and the intermolecular hydrogen bonds between CS and POP, the addition of POP to CS films can result in a smoother and more stable crystalline structure in the composite film. The CS-POP composite films exhibited enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial activity compared to the CS films alone, with the highest DPPH scavenging activity of 72.43 %. The composite films also showed significant inhibitory effects on the growth of E. coli.

Abstract
Formulations of biodegradable films using macrocarpa peach palm flour (low amylose starch), chitosan and glycerol, were developed and the effects of the drying temperature on films by assessing their physicochemical, mechanical, barrier, optical, structural, antioxidant properties, and the biodegradability in soil were evaluated. Chitosan enhanced the mechanical properties of the films, but they showed no antimicrobial activity against the tested food-borne pathogens, except for Listeria monocytogenes, for which the inhibition zone was from 0.1 to 0.6 cm. Films with higher concentrations of peach palm flour are opaquer, with better antioxidant characteristics and content of phenolic compounds compared to films made with lower concentrations of flour. The films presented a yellowish color because of the carotenoids found in peach palm flour, 29.63 μg 100 g-1, and exhibited a C-type X-ray pattern, characteristic peak of materials where amylose and amylopectin are present. After 15 days in soil, the films lost 30% of their initial weight. Therefore, these results suggest that the development of films as food preservative is a promising field and that the material used in the study are suitable for their formulation.

Abstract
Controlling cellular adhesion is a critical step in the development of biomaterials, and in cell- based biosensing assays. Usually, the adhesivity of cells is tuned by an appropriate biocompatible layer. Here, synthetic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC), natural chitosan, and heparin (existing in an extracellular matrix) were selected to assembly PDADMAC/heparin and chitosan/heparin films. The physicochemical properties of macroion multilayers were determined by streaming potential measurements (SPM), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D), and optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS). The topography of the wet films was imaged using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adhesion of preosteoblastic cell line MC3T3-E1 on those well-characterized polysaccharide-based multilayers was evaluated using a resonant waveguide grating (RWG) based optical biosensor and digital holographic microscopy. The latter method was engaged to investigate long-term cellular behavior on the fabricated multilayers. (PDADMAC/heparin) films were proved to be the most effective in inducing cellular adhesion. The cell attachment to chitosan/heparin-based multilayers was negligible. It was found that efficient adhesion of the cells occurs onto homogeneous and rigid multilayers (PDADMAC/heparin), whereas the macroion films forming "sponge-like" structures (chitosan/heparin) are less effective, and could be employed when reduced adhesion is needed. Polysaccharide-based multilayers can be considered versatile systems for medical applications. One can postulate that the presented results are relevant not only for modeling studies but also for applied research.

Abstract
Chitosan is a naturally occurring compound that can be obtained from deacetylated chitin, which is obtained from various sources such as fungi, crustaceans, and insects. Commercially, chitosan is produced from crustaceans. Based on the range of its molecular weight, chitosan can be classified into three different types, namely, high molecular weight chitosan (HMWC, >700 kDa), medium molecular weight chitosan (MMWC, 150-700 kDa), and low molecular weight chitosan (LMWC, less than 150 kDa). Chitosan shows several properties that can be applied in horticultural crops, such as plant root growth enhancer, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral activities. Nevertheless, these properties depend on its molecular weight (MW) and acetylation degree (DD). Therefore, this article seeks to extensively review the properties of chitosan applied in the agricultural sector, classifying them in relation to chitosan's MW, and its use as a material for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Over the past decade, much attention has been paid to chitosan as a potential drug carrier because of its non-toxicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability and antibacterial properties. The effect of various chitosan characteristics on its ability to carry different antibiotics is discussed in the literature. In this work, we evaluated the influence of the different molecular weights of this polymer on its potential as an antibacterial membrane after adding gentamicin (1% w/w). Three types of chitosan membranes without and with antibiotic were prepared using a solvent casting process. Their microstructures were analyzed with a 4K digital microscope, and their chemical bonds were studied using FTIR spectroscopy. Furthermore, cytocompatibility on human osteoblasts and fibroblasts as well as antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus.) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) were assessed. We observed that the membrane prepared from medium-molecular-weight chitosan exhibited the highest contact angle (≈85°) and roughness (10.96 ± 0.21 µm) values, and its antibacterial activity was unfavorable. The maximum tensile strength and Young's modulus of membranes improved and elongation decreased with an increase in the molecular weight of chitosan. Membranes prepared with high-molecular-weight chitosan possessed the best antibacterial activity, but mainly against S. aureus. For E. coli, is not advisable to add gentamicin to the chitosan membrane, or it is suggested to deplete its content. None of the fabricated membranes exhibited a full cytotoxic effect on osteoblastic and fibroblast cells. Based on our results, the most favorable membrane as a gentamicin carrier was obtained from high-molecular-weight chitosan.

Abstract
In the present work, the composite films were obtained by the solution casting method from chitosan and rice protein hydrolysates, reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) of different contents (0 %, 3 %, 6 % and 9 %). The influence of different CNC loadings on the mechanical, barrier and thermal properties was discussed. SEM showed the formation of intramolecular interactions between the CNC and film matrices, leading to more compact and homogeneous films. These interactions had a positive influence on the mechanical strength properties, which was reflected in higher breaking force of 4.27 MPa. The elongation dwindled from 132.42 % to 79.37 % with increasing CNC levels. The linkages formed between the CNC and film matrices reduced the water affinity, leading to a reduction in their moisture content, water solubility and water vapor transmission. Thermal stability of the composite films was also improved in the presence of CNC, by increasing maximum degradation temperature from 311.21 to 325.67 °C with increasing CNC contents. The strongest DPPH inhibition of the film was 45.42 %. The composite films exhibited the highest inhibition zone diameter against E. coli (12.05 mm) and S. aureus (12.48 mm), and the hybrid of CNC and ZnO nanoparticles exhibited stronger antibacterial activity than their single existent forms. The present work shows the possibility of obtaining CNC-reinforced films with improved mechanical, thermal and barrier properties.

Abstract
In this study, the impact of three different biopolymers, namely, quince seed gum, potato starch and gellan gum, at levels of zero to three, on optimizing the biodegradable film was investigated. In order to prepare the mixed edible film, the textural properties of the films, water vapor permeability, water-solubility, transparency, thickness, color parameters, acid solubility and microstructure of the made films were investigated. Numerical optimization of method variables was performed based on the maximum Young's modulus and minimum solubility in water, minimum solubility in acid and minimum water vapor permeability by mixed design, using the Design-Expert software. The results showed that the increase of the quince seed gum directly affected the Young's modulus, tensile strength, elongation to break, solubility in acid, and a* and b* values. However, the rise of the potato starch and gellan gum levels increased the thickness, solubility in water, water vapor permeability, transparency, L* value and Young's modulus, tensile strength, elongation to break, solubility in acid and a* and b* values. The optimal conditions for the production of the biodegradable edible film were selected at the levels of 1.623 %, 1.637 % and 0 % for quince seed gum, potato starch and gellan gum, respectively. The results of scanning electron microscopy showed that the film had more uniformity, coherence and smoothness, as compared to other films studied. The results of this study, thus, showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the predicted and laboratory results (p < 0.05), indicating the good fit of the model designed for producing a quince seed gum/potato starch/gellan gum composite film.

Abstract
To obtain high-quality insect products, milling was used as a modification tool and its effect on grasshopper chitin, chitosan and chitosan films was investigated. Three grasshopper powders were obtained and classified into coarse-milled powder (CMP, D90 = 956 μm), medium-milled powder (MMP, D90 = 492 μm), and ultrafine-milled powder (UMP, D90 = 79.1 μm). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy illustrated that no drastic change due to milling was observed, but the crystallinity (X-ray diffraction) and thermal stability (Thermogravimetric analysis) of the chitin, chitosan and chitosan films reduced with increasing milling intensity. Besides, the purity of the chitin and the yield of chitosan obtained from UMP were improved. Chitosan prepared from UMP was also characterized by high degree of deacetylation (65.6 %) and solubility and rather low molecular weight (11.5 kDa), viscosity and water/fat binding capacity. The finer the powder used as the extraction material, the thinner the chitosan films and the more compact the structure. On the whole, the chitosan films prepared from the MMP had higher mechanical properties and better moisture-keeping ability on strawberries compared with CMP and UMP films. This study establishes the role milling intensity played in the modification of grasshopper products and provides a reference for practical applications.

Abstract
Owing to its biodegradability, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility, chitosan (Cs) is a ubiquitous biopolymer. However, applications of Cs are limited owing to the existence of strong inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonds within its network. To address this issue, we regenerated medium-molecular-weight Cs to enhance the physico-chemical and functional properties using a cationic approach. Accordingly, alkaline modification was employed to introduce an additional positive charge to the amine functional groups of Cs and moderately disintegrate the inter- and intra-hydrogen bonds. The chemical structure of Cs and regenerated chitosan (RCs) was confirmed through Fourier transform infrared and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. RCs showed higher zeta potential value compared to Cs. Additionally, using X-ray diffraction, RCs exhibited low crystallinity, which can be attributed to the repulsive force caused by the positive surface charge and the destruction of hydrogen bonds. The RCs exhibited stronger antioxidant activity than Cs. Furthermore, the minimum inhibition concentrations (MICs) of RCs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were reduced by almost four times compared with those of Cs. The superior functional properties of RCs can be attributed to the formation of a polycationic structure after alkaline modification. Thus, RCs can be introduced as potent agents for various biomedical purposes.

Abstract
Juice, as a liquid foodstuff, is subject to spoilage and damage due to complications during transport and storage. The appearance of intact outer packaging often makes spoilage and damage difficult to detect. Therefore, it of particular importance to develop a fast, real-time material to evaluate liquid foodstuffs. In this paper, starch films with pH response characteristics are successfully prepared by inorganic ion modification by utilizing whole starch and amylopectin as raw materials. The mechanical properties, stability properties, hydrophilic properties and pH electrical signal response indices of the films are analyzed and measured. The films exhibit good electrical conductivity values with 1.0 mL of ion addition (10 mmol/L), causing the composite film to respond sensitively to solutions with varying pH values. In the test of spoiled orange juice, the full-component corn starch (CS) film has more sensitive resistance and current responses, which is more conducive for applications in the quality monitoring of juice. The results indicate that modified starch films can potentially be applied in the real-time monitoring of the safety of liquid foodstuffs.

Abstract
The composite films were prepared by adding rice protein hydrolysate (RH) into chitosan (CH). Effect of four different chitosan molecular weights (MW, 0.8- 1.0, 30, 100, 300 kDa) was evaluated and curcumin was further incorporated into the film to enhance its bioactivities. With increasing MW (<100 kDa), moisture, solubility and water vapor transmission marginally decreased while tensile strength increased. Rice hydrolysate improved the film solubility and extensibility. All films showed extraordinary extensibility ranging from 180.26% to 204.08%. DSC confirmed MW did affect the thermal stability. The lower MW, the higher antioxidant activity of the CH/RH films. The 30 kDa CH/RH film exhibited higher antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. Curcumin effectively improved both antibacterial and antioxidant activity of the CH/RH films. Hence, chitosan molecular weight must be chosen carefully according to its application and incorporation of protein hydrolysate into film would be an efficient strategy to modify film performance.

Abstract
The integrated supercritical fluid extraction–impregnation process (SFE-SSI) was performed to fabricate material with antiviral properties against the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Cotton gauze and starch/chitosan polymer films (SCF) were impregnated with components extracted from Melissa officinalis at 10 MPa and 40 °C using a green medium, supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). The influences of the processing mode regarding the flow of the supercritical fluid through the system, and the mass ratio of the plant material and the solid carrier, on the impregnation yield of M. officinalis extract were studied. The results revealed that the introduction of a fresh amount of CO2 into the system enabled the highest impregnation yield of 2.24% for cotton gauze and 8.71% for SCF. The presence of M. officinalis extract on the surface of both impregnated cotton gaze and SCF was confirmed by FTIR and GC analyses after the re-extraction of the impregnated samples. The M. officinalis impregnated materials showed a strong inhibitory effect against Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1).

Abstract
This work aimed to prepare ulluco starch (US)/chitosan (Ch) edible films and evaluate the effect of the concentration of US on their physicochemical properties. The use of edible films is a means of adding value to the ulluco crop and evaluating the viability of using new sources to produce packaging materials. Different samples were prepared at different US concentrations (2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% w/v) and a fixed chitosan concentration (1.5% w/v); then, samples were analyzed, considering their physical, mechanical, and thermal properties. The US/Ch edible films showed an increase in solubility from 17.5% to 21.7%, swelling power (SP) from 38.9% to 267%, tensile strength (TS) from 3.69 MPa to 10.7 MPa, Young modulus (YM) from 18.0 Pa to 652 Pa, and thermal stability as the US concentration increased. However, samples with low US concentrations showed higher elongation at break (EB) (36.6%) and better barrier properties (WVP) (5.61 × 10−11 g/m s Pa). The films evaluated in this work presented good physical, mechanical, and barrier properties, revealing their potential as packaging material ensuring food security, and demonstrating the technological potential of US.

Abstract
Graphene and its derivatives, especially graphene oxide (GO), are attracting considerable interest in the fabrication of new adsorbents that have the potential to remove various pollutants that have escaped into the aquatic environment. Herein, the development of GO/chitosan (GO/CS) composites as adsorbent materials is described and reviewed. This combination is interesting as the addition of graphene to chitosan enhances its mechanical properties, while the chitosan hydrogel serves as an immobilization matrix for graphene. Following a brief description of both graphene and chitosan as independent adsorbent materials, the emerging GO/CS composites are introduced. The additional materials that have been added to the GO/CS composites, including magnetic iron oxides, chelating agents, cyclodextrins, additional adsorbents and polymeric blends, are then described and discussed. The performance of these materials in the removal of heavy metal ions, dyes and other organic molecules are discussed followed by the introduction of strategies employed in the regeneration of the GO/CS adsorbents. It is clear that, while some challenges exist, including cost, regeneration and selectivity in the adsorption process, the GO/CS composites are emerging as promising adsorbent materials.

Abstract
High molecular weight chitosan (≈322 kDa) was obtained from chitin isolated from Brachystola magna (Girard) to produced biodegradable films. Their physicochemical, mechanical and water vapor permeability (WVP) properties were compared against commercial chitosan films with different molecular weights. Brachystola magna chitosan films (CFBM) exhibited similar physicochemical and mechanical characteristics to those of commercial chitosans. The CFBM films presented lower WVP values (10.01 × 10−11 g/m s Pa) than commercial chitosans films (from 16.06 × 10−11 to 64.30 × 10−11 g/m s Pa). Frankfurt-type sausages were covered with chitosan films and stored in refrigerated conditions (4 °C). Their quality attributes (color, weight loss, pH, moisture, texture and lipid oxidation) were evaluated at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 days. Sausages covered with CFMB films presented the lowest weight loss (from 1.24% to 2.38%). A higher increase in hardness (from 22.32 N to 30.63 N) was observed in sausages covered with CFMB films. Compared with other films and the control (uncovered sausages), CFMB films delay pH reduction. Moreover, this film presents the lower lipid oxidation level (0.10 malonaldehyde mg/sample kg). Thus, chitosan of B. magna could be a good alternative as packaging material for meat products with high-fat content.

Abstract
It is demanded to supply foods with good quality for all the humans. With the advent of aging society, palatable and healthy foods are required to improve the quality of life and reduce the burden of finance for medical expenditure. Food hydrocolloids can contribute to this demand by versatile functions such as thickening, gelling, stabilising, and emulsifying, controlling texture and flavour release in food processing. Molar mass effects on viscosity and diffusion in liquid foods, and on mechanical and other physical properties of solid and semi-solid foods and films are overviewed. In these functions, the molar mass is one of the key factors, and therefore, the effects of molar mass on various health problems related to noncommunicable diseases or symptoms such as cancer, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, constipation, high blood pressure, knee pain, osteoporosis, cystic fibrosis and dysphagia are described. Understanding these problems only from the viewpoint of molar mass is limited since other structural characteristics, conformation, branching, blockiness in copolymers such as pectin and alginate, degree of substitution as well as the position of the substituents are sometimes the determining factor rather than the molar mass. Nevertheless, comparison of different behaviours and functions in different polymers from the viewpoint of molar mass is expected to be useful to find a common characteristics, which may be helpful to understand the mechanism in other problems.

Abstract
Some of the current challenges faced by the food industry deal with the natural ripening process and the short shelf-life of fresh and minimally processed products. The loss of vitamins and minerals, lipid oxidation, enzymatic browning, and growth of microorganisms have been the main issues for many years within the innovation and improvement of food packaging, which seeks to preserve and protect the product until its consumption. Most of the conventional packaging are petroleum-derived plastics, which after product consumption becomes a major concern due to environmental damage provoked by their difficult degradation. In this sense, many researchers have shown interest in edible films and coatings, which represent an environmentally friendly alternative for food packaging. To date, chitosan (CS) is among the most common materials in the formulation of these biodegradable packaging together with polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids. The good film-forming and biological properties (i.e., antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral) of CS have fostered its usage in food packaging. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to collect and discuss the latest development works (over the last five years) aimed at using CS in the manufacture of edible films and coatings for food preservation. Particular attention has been devoted to relevant findings in the field, together with the novel preparation protocols of such biodegradable packaging. Finally, recent trends in new concepts of composite films and coatings are also addressed.

Abstract
Blueberries are highly appreciated for their high antioxidant content but are also particularly susceptible to fungal deterioration. In this work, corn starch and chitosan, byproducts of the fishing industry, as well as active compounds obtained from citrus processing waste were used to obtain active biodegradable film packaging. Blueberries were packed in corn starch–chitosan (CS:CH) films and in active films containing lemon essential oil (LEO) or grapefruit seed extract (GSE). The effects of film packaging on the quality parameters of berries and the fungal incidence of disease during storage were studied and compared to benchmark materials. A conservation assay simulating transport and commercialization conditions was conducted. Blueberries packed in CS:CH films showed antioxidant capacity values closer to those packed in commercial PET containers (Clamshells), preserving 84.8% of the initial antioxidants content. Fruit packed in LEO films exhibited the greatest weight loss and rot incidence, and poor surface color. CS:CH and GSE films controlled the fruit respiration rate and weight loss, therefore they are materials with adequate barrier properties for blueberries conservation. Bags formulated with GSE showed adequate barrier properties to maintain fruit quality attributes without the incidence of rottenness, being an interesting option for blueberries exportation.

Abstract
The use of dyes at an industrial level has become problematic, since the discharge of dye effluents into water disturbs the photosynthetic activity of numerous aquatic organisms by reducing the penetration of light and oxygen, in addition to causing carcinogenic diseases and mutagenic effects in humans, as well as alterations in different ecosystems. Chitosan (CS) is suitable for removing anionic dyes since it has favorable properties, such as acquiring a positive charge and a typical macromolecular structure of polysaccharides. In this study, the optimization of CS beads crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) for the adsorption of reactive blue dye 4 (RB4) in an aqueous solution was carried out. In this sense, the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to evaluate the concentration of CS, GA, and sodium hydroxide on the swelling degree in the GA-crosslinked CS beads. In the same way, RSM was applied to optimize the adsorption process of the RB4 dye as a function of the initial pH of the solution, initial concentration of the dye, and adsorbent dose. The crosslinking reaction was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The design described for the swelling degree showed an R2 (coefficient of determination) adjusted of 0.8634 and optimized concentrations (CS 3.3% w/v, GA 1.7% v/v, and NaOH 1.3 M) that were conveniently applied with a concentration of CS at 3.0% w/v to decrease the viscosity and facilitate the formation of the beads. In the RB4 dye adsorption design, an adjusted R2 (0.8280) with good correlation was observed, where the optimized conditions were: pH = 2, adsorbent dose 0.6 g, and initial concentration of RB4 dye 5 mg/L. The kinetic behavior and the adsorption isotherm allowed us to conclude that the GA-crosslinked CS beads' adsorption mechanism was controlled mainly by chemisorption interactions, demonstrating its applicability in systems that require the removal of contaminants with similar structures to the model presented.

Abstract
The quality of water is continuously under threat as increasing concentrations of pollutants escape into the aquatic environment. However, these issues can be alleviated by adsorbing pollutants onto adsorbents. Chitosan and its composites are attracting considerable interest as environmentally acceptable adsorbents and have the potential to remove many of these contaminants. In this review the development of chitosan-based adsorbents is described and discussed. Following a short introduction to the extraction of chitin from seafood wastes, followed by its conversion to chitosan, the properties of chitosan are described. Then, the emerging chitosan/carbon-based materials, including magnetic chitosan and chitosan combined with graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, biochar, and activated carbon and also chitosan-silica composites are introduced. The applications of these materials in the removal of various heavy metal ions, including Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), and different cationic and anionic dyes, phenol and other organic molecules, such as antibiotics, are reviewed, compared and discussed. Adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics are then highlighted and followed by details on the mechanisms of adsorption and the role of the chitosan and the carbon or silica supports. Based on the reviewed papers, it is clear, that while some challenges remain, chitosan-based materials are emerging as promising adsorbents.

Abstract
In this study, gelatin (type A and type B) with/without transglutaminase (TGase) were added to collagen fiber films to form hierarchical structure and its effects on the film were investigated. The analysis of mechanical properties indicate that gelatin significantly increased the toughness of the collagen film, where the 10 wt% type A gelatin -contained films had highest tensile strength, elongation at break and work of fracture. However, TGase crosslinking compromised the benefits of type A gelatin greatly, while type B gelatin showed a slight improvement, due to the difference in crosslinking activity between them. In the meantime, the hydrogen bonds were formed between the collagen and gelatin according to the results of the Fourier transformation infrared. In general, it is expected that the hierarchical structure formed in the collagen/gelatin films can be used as an effective strategy to enhance the collagen matrix films' mechanical properties.

Abstract
Inspired by the natural epidermis of animals and plants with antioxidant and antibacterial properties, the aim of this research was to characterize and analyze the effects of the chitosan concentrations on properties of glycerol plasticized chitosan (GPC) film and to investigate the suitability of sensory evaluation and bionic electronic nose (b-electronic nose) detection to assess the freshness of ground beef packaged in the GPC film. The increase in chitosan concentration resulted in an increase in solubility value, total color differences and color intensity of chitosan films. The water vapor permeability (WVP) of the GPC films decreased with the increasing of the chitosan concentration and then increased at higher chitosan concentrations. Longer storage time led to poorer freshness of the ground beef and the GPC film could keep beef samples fresher and delay the deterioration of the beef. Both the traditional sensory evaluation and b-electronic nose technology were fit for evaluating the quality and shelf-life of ground beef, which could advantageously be applied in the future for analyzing other bionic food packaging materials.

Abstract
In this study, chitosan (CH) coating with different number-average molecular weight (MW, ca. 5, 19 and 61 kDa) was electrostatic sprayed on strawberry. The effects of MW on strawberry quality changes were evaluated during 15 days of storage at 4 °C. The qualities of strawberry included mold growth, weight loss, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), pH, flavonoids content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Results showed that CH coating could significantly maintain the strawberry qualities during storage compared to uncoated treatment. CH coating with 61 kDa was more effective in retarding the increases of pH and MDA, and could better maintain flavonoids content. However, MW had no significant impact on mold growth, weight loss, firmness, SOD activity of coated strawberry. According to evaluation criteria, CH coating with 61 kDa had better performance on strawberry preservation with the highest synthetic value (6.93), and could be used to maintain quality and prolong the shelf life of strawberry during cold storage.

Abstract
Lentinula edodes polysaccharides from at four different development stages (referred to L1, L2, L3 and L4, respectively) were extracted by hot water method, and graded ethanol precipitation to final concentration of 20%, 50% and 70%, then12 crude polysaccharide fractions (referred to L1P20, L2P20, L3P20; L4P20, L1P50, L2P50, L3P50, L4P50 and L1P70, L2P70, L3P70, L4P70, respectively) were obtained. Physicochemical properties and exoteric bioactivities of the crude polysaccharide fractions were measured. The results of physicochemical properties revealed that extraction yields of P20 fractions were significantly higher than those of P50 and P70 fractions, and the contents of polysaccharide and β-glucan in L3P50 fractions were higher, and the viscosity-average molecular weight reached a maximum at L2, and high molecular weight polysaccharides could be obtained at a low alcohol concentration in P20 fractions, and the glycosidic bonds were found to exist in all crude polysaccharide fractions. These crude polysaccharide fractions showed different bioactivities, wherein the polysaccharides of higher molecular weight in P20 fractions had greater bioactivity. These results showed that immature stage of Lentinula edodes was the optimal harvest time for obtaining higher bioactivity of crude polysaccharides.
