Abstract
Gastroenteritis and hepatitis are the most common illnesses resulting from the consumption of food contaminated with human enteric viruses. Several natural compounds have demonstrated antiviral activity against human enteric viruses, such as human norovirus and hepatitis A virus, while little information is available for hepatitis E virus. Many in-vitro studies have evaluated the efficacy of different natural compounds against human enteric viruses or their surrogates. However, only few studies have investigated their antiviral activity in food applications. Among them, green tea extract, grape seed extract and carrageenans have been extensively investigated as antiviral natural compounds to improve food safety. Indeed, these extracts have been studied as sanitizers on food-contact surfaces, in produce washing solutions, as active fractions in antiviral food-packaging materials, and in edible coatings. The most innovative applications of these antiviral natural extracts include the development of coatings to extend the shelf life of berries or their combination with established food technologies for improved processes. This review summarizes existing knowledge in the underexplored field of natural compounds for enhancing the safety of viral-contaminated foods and underscores the research needs to be covered in the near future.

Abstract
In this study, intelligent double-layer films were prepared using modified black rice anthocyanin (MBRA)-curcumin (CUR)-gellan gum (GG) as the inner indicator layer and sodium alginate (ALG)‑zinc oxide (ZnO) as the outer antimicrobial layer. The bilayer films were successfully prepared, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction measurements. The mechanical characteristics, moisture content, and water vapor resistance of GG-MBRA/CUR1@ALG-ZnO, GG-MBRA/CUR2@ALG-ZnO, and GG-MBRA/CUR3@ALG-ZnO films showed significant enhancement compared to GG-MBRA/CUR3 and ALG-ZnO films. The bilayer films exhibited excellent pH responsiveness and reacted effectively to ammonia. The outer layer significantly improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the inner layer. When the films were applied to shrimp, it was found that the double-layer films not only monitored the freshness of the shrimp in real-time but also were influential in extending the shelf life of the shrimp by about 1 d. Therefore, the double-layer film demonstrated potential as a smart packaging material for real-time monitoring of meat product freshness.

Abstract
Marine microalgae are a rich reservoir of natural compounds, including bioactives. Nonetheless, these organisms remain fairly unexplored despite their potential biotechnological applications. Culture collections with diverse taxonomic groups and lifestyles are a good source to unlock this potential and discover new molecules for multiple applications such as the treatment of human pathologies or the production of aquaculture species. In the present work extracts from thirty-three strains (including twenty dinoflagellates, four diatoms and nine strains from seven other algal classes), cultivated under identical conditions, were examined for their antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. Among these, antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities were detected in a few strains while the antibacterial tests showed positive results in most assays. In turn, most trials did not show any anti-cancer activity. Significant differences were observed between species within the same class, in particular dinoflagellates, which were better represented in this study. These preliminary findings pave the way for an in-depth characterization of the extracts with highest signals in each test, the identification of the compounds responsible for the biological activities found and a further screening of the CCVIEO culture collection.

Abstract
This study addresses the growing interest in bio-based active food packaging by infusing Lepidium sativum (Garden cress) seeds extract (GRCE) into sodium alginate (SALG) films at varying concentrations (1, 3, and 5 %). The GRCE extract revealed six phenolic compounds, with gallic and chlorogenic acids being prominent, showcasing substantial total phenolic content (TPC) of 139.36 μg GAE/mg and total flavonoid content (TFC) of 26.46 μg RE/mg. The integration into SALG films significantly increased TPC, reaching 30.73 mg GAE/g in the film with 5 % GRCE. This enhancement extended to DPPH and ABTS activities, with notable rises to 66.47 and 70.12 %, respectively. Physical properties, including tensile strength, thickness, solubility, and moisture content, were positively affected. A reduction in water vapor permeability (WVP) was reported in the film enriched with 5 % GRCE (1.389 × 10-10 g H2O/m s p.a.). FT-IR analysis revealed bands indicating GRCE's physical interaction with the SALG matrix, with thermal stability of the films decreasing upon GRCE integration. SALG/GRCE5 effectively lowered the peroxide value (PV) of sunflower oil after four weeks at 50 °C compared to the control, with direct film-oil contact enhancing this reduction. Similar trends were observed in the K232 and K270 values.

Abstract
In order to improve the stability of natural anthocyanins in intelligent packaging materials, this work first modified black rice anthocyanins (BRA) by acylation with acetic acid, then modified the acylated BRA by co-coloring with different ratios of curcumin (CUR), and finally added the mixed indicator to gellan gum (GG) to develop intelligent packaging films with good stability. The UV spectroscopy results showed that acetic acid had successfully modified the BRA, while the thermal, photostability and pH stability of the modified black rice anthocyanin (MBRA) were significantly enhanced. The indicators of BRA, MBRA and MBRA mixed with CUR showed excellent pH sensitivity in different buffer solutions. The SEM, FT-IR and XRD results indicated apparent crystalline aggregates on the surface of the films added with a high concentration of CUR. Compared with GG-BRA film, GG-MBRA film improved all properties except for antioxidant performance. Notably, the GG-MBRA/CUR series composite films exhibited significant improvements over the GG-BRA and GG-MBRA films in terms of optical characteristics, mechanical properties, water vapor barrier, oxidation resistance, and color stability; meanwhile, all films exhibited excellent pH sensitivity. Considering all the properties of the films, GG-MBRA/CUR3 film has tremendous potential as a smart indicator film for improving freshness accuracy.

Abstract
This study aims to develop a versatile intelligent packaging based on alginate (Alg) and anthocyanin (Ant) by incorporating bacterial cellulose nanocrystal-stabilized camellia oil Pickering emulsions. Firstly, bacterial cellulose nanocrystals (BCNs) matrix produced from kombucha was incorporated with camellia oil into via ultrasonic triggering, forming a stable and multifunctional camellia oil-bacterial cellulose nanocrystal Pickering nanoemulsions (CBPE). The microstructure and rheology results of the emulsion confirmed the stabilized preparation of CBPE. Subsequently, the CBPE was integrated into the three-dimensional network structure composed of alginate/anthocyanin. The composite film (Alg-Ant-CBPE) was designed through Ca2+ crosslinking, intermolecular hydrogen bonding and dehydration condensation. The fabricated color indicator films with different concentrations of CBPE (0.1 %-0.4 %), showed varying degree of improvement in hydrophobicity, UV shielding, mechanical strength, thermal stability, water vapor barrier properties and antioxidant capacities. When applied to yogurt, the Alg-Ant-CBPE4 exhibited more pronounced color changes compared to Alg-Ant, enabling visual detection of food freshness. In conclusion, the incorporation of Pickering nanoemulsion provides an effective and promising approach to enhance the performance of polysaccharide-based intelligent packaging.

Abstract
Food is a crucial source for the endurance of individuals, and quality concerns of consumers are being raised with the progression of time. Edible coatings and films (ECFs) are increasingly important in biobased packaging because they have a prime role in enhancing the organoleptic characteristics of the food products and minimizing the spread of microorganisms. These sustainable ingredients are crucial for a safer and healthier environment. These are created from proteins, polysaccharides, lipids, plasticizers, emulsifiers, and active substances. These are eco-friendly since made from innocuous material. Nanocomposite films are also beginning to be developed and support networks of biological polymers. Antioxidant, flavoring, and coloring compounds can be employed to improve the quality, wellbeing, and stability of packaged foods. Gelatin-enhanced fruit and vegetable-based ECFs compositions have the potential to produce biodegradable films. Root plants like cassava, potato, and sweet potato have been employed to create edible films and coatings. Achira flour, amylum, yam, ulluco, and water chestnut have all been considered as novel film-forming ingredients. The physical properties of biopolymers are influenced by the characteristics, biochemical confirmation, compatibility, relative humidity, temperature, water resistance, and application procedures of the components. ECFs must adhere to all regulations governing food safety and be generally recognized as safe (GRAS). This review covers the new advancements in ECFs regarding the commitment of novel components to the improvement of their properties. It is expected that ECFs can be further investigated to provide innovative components and strategies that are helpful for global financial issues and the environment.

Abstract
There has been a shift from use of petroleum-based plastics, causing serious environmental pollution, towards innovative and biodegradable edible packaging. The present study documents the development of composite edible films based on the flaxseed gum (FSG) modified by the incorporation of betel leaf extract (BLE). The films were assessed for physicochemical, mechanical, morphological, thermal, antimicrobial and structural characteristics. Scanning electron microscopy images indicated that the roughness decreased with an increase in BLE concentration. The water vapor permeability of the FSG-BLE films ranged from 4.68 to 1.59 × 10-9 g s- 1 m- 2 Pa- 1, lower than that of the control sample (6.77 × 10-9 g s- 1 m- 2 Pa- 1). The BLE4 (containing 10 % BLE) films had the highest tensile strength of 32.46 MPa compared to the control sample (21.23 MPa). Similarly, EAB and seal strength of the films incorporated with BLE were ameliorated. X-ray diffraction pattern and FTIR illustrated the shift of amorphous to crystalline behavior and a significant interaction among the BLE and FSG functional groups. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the treated films was not affected significantly however, they showed improved antimicrobial activity with the highest diameter of inhibition zone in the BLE4 sample. This study concluded that the FSG-BLE composite films (BLE4 in particular) can be considered as novel packaging material for food conservation coupled with a potential to enhance the shelf life of perishable food products.

Abstract
Alginate films (2% w·v-1) were prepared with varying concentrations (5-20% w/w) of citric acid and aqueous grape seed extract (GSE) filtrate (11.66 ± 1.32 g GAE/L) using the solvent-evaporation method. Crosslinking alginate via ester bonds (FTIR analysis) with citric acid up to 10% (w/w) led to a 33% increase in tensile strength, a 34% reduction in water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and had no impact on elongation at break. Crosslinking alginate with citric acid in the presence of GSE increased the tensile strength by 17%, decreased WVTR by 21%, and significantly improved DPPH scavenging activity. Moreover, after incubation for 24 h at 37 °C, the film-forming solutions exhibited increased antimicrobial activity, resulting in 0.5- and 2.5-log reductions for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, compared to the values obtained without the addition of GSE. The stronger inhibitory effect observed against Gram-positive bacteria can be attributed to the unique composition and structure of their cell walls, which creates a barrier that restricts the penetration of polyphenols into the cells. The pH adjustment of the GSE film-forming solution from 2.0 to 10.0 shifted the UV/VIS absorption spectra, resulting in a colour change from yellow to red. The findings of this study have showcased the potential of combining GSE and citric acid to enhance the functionality and bioactivity of alginate films for applications in smart food packaging.

Abstract
Incorporating carotenoids into sodium alginate films can give them functional properties for food packaging applications. The lycopene and β-carotene were included in the biopolymer matrix at 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% (g carotenoid/g polymer). There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in film thickness (45 ± 1 μm) of sodium alginate films with carotenoids. Nevertheless, the low quantity of carotenoids was enough to promote significant variations in the tensile properties of films. The films with lycopene or β-carotene showed lower tensile strength and elongation at break than control films. The carotenoid incorporation promoted a reduction (p < 0.05) in water vapor permeability, mainly by adding 0.5%. In the same way, it improved the light transmission and thermal stability of films and did not affect the water solubility of films. The scanning electron microscopy of films showed a homogeneous surface, but the films with lycopene or β-carotene showed a more compact structure than the control film. The sodium alginate films incorporated with 0.3% lycopene or β-carotene showed a remarkable protective effect on sunflower oil against oxidation compared with traditional commercial plastic packaging under accelerated storage conditions (heat and light). Therefore, they can be considered a potential material for food packaging purposes.

Abstract
The current study was conducted to develop biodegradable films with matrix composed from carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), sodium alginate (SA) and different concentrations from Thymus vulgaris purified leaves extract (TVE). The color properties, physical properties, shape of surface, manners of crystallinity, mechanical properties and thermal properties of produced films were investigated. The continuous addition of TVE up to 1.6 % inside films matrix imparted the yellow color of extract that increased opacity to 2.98 and reduced moisture, swelling, solubility and water vapor permeability (WVP) of films up to 10.31 %, 30.17 %, 20.18 % and (1.12× 10-10 g.m-1 s-1 pa-1), respectively. Furthermore, the surface micrographs showed smoother surface after using small concentrations of TVE and turned to irregular with rough surface at higher concentrations. The FT-IR analysis indicated typically bands that demonstrated physical interaction between TVE extract and CMC/SA matrix. The fabricated films showed suitable thermal stability with decreasing trend by incorporation of TVE inside CMC/SA films. Furthermore, the developed CMC/SA/TVE2 showed significant effects on preserving the levels of moisture content, titrable acidity, force to puncture and sensory properties of cheddar cheese during cold storage days compared with commercial packaging materials.

Abstract
Recently, edible films or coatings that are made from algal polysaccharides have become promising candidates for replacing plastic-based packaging materials for food storage due to their non-toxic, biodegradable, biocompatible, and bioactive characteristics. Ulvan, a significant biopolymer with unique functional properties derived from marine green algae, has been extensively used in various sectors. However, there are fewer commercial applications of this sugar in the food packaging industry compared to many other algae-derived polysaccharides, such as alginates, carrageenan, and agar. This article aims to review the unparalleled chemical composition/structure and physiochemical properties of ulvan and the latest developments in ulvan-based edible films and coatings, thus highlighting their potential applications in the food packaging industry.

Abstract
In order to overcome this challenge of poor stability of natural anthocyanins in intelligent packaging materials, roselle anthocyanin (RA) was first modified by acetic acid, and then a double-layer smart indication antimicrobial film was developed using modified roselle anthocyanin (MRA)-gellan gum (GG) as the inner layer and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-starch (ST)-Nisin as the outer layer. UV spectra revealed that acetic acid was successfully grafted onto RA, which dramatically improved their thermal stability, antioxidant capabilities, photostability, and pH stability. The bilayer films were successfully prepared, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction measurements. In comparison to GG-MRA and CMC-ST-Nisin films, the water content, water solubility, mechanical characteristics, water vapor barrier, oxygen barrier, and hydrophobicity of GG-MRA@CMC-ST-Nisin films were significantly enhanced. The presence of the outer layer films significantly enhanced the UV-vis light barrier, opacity, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the inner layer films. When the films were applied to chicken breast, it was found that the indicator films not only monitored the freshness of the chicken in real-time but also that the GG-MRA film and the double-layer film were effective in extending the shelf life of the chicken by 1 and 2 days, respectively, compared to the control group.

Abstract
The viability of SARS-CoV-2 on food surfaces and its propagation through the food chain has been discussed by several stakeholders, as it may represent a serious public health problem, bringing new challenges to the food system. This work shows for the first time that edible films can be used against SARS-CoV-2. Sodium alginate-based films containing gallic acid, geraniol, and green tea extract were evaluated in terms of their antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2. The results showed that all these films have strong in vitro antiviral activity against this virus. However, a higher concentration of the active compound (1.25%) is needed for the film containing gallic acid to achieve similar results to those obtained for lower concentrations of geraniol and green tea extract (0.313%). Furthermore, critical concentrations of the active compounds in the films were used to evaluate their stability during storage. Results showed that gallic acid-loaded films lose their activity from the second week of storage, while films with geraniol and green tea extract only show a drop in activity after four weeks. These results highlight the possibility of using edible films and coatings as antiviral materials on food surfaces or food contact materials, which may help to reduce the spreading of viruses through the food chain.

Abstract
The poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and starch-based polymeric films with a ratio of 2:8 were prepared using solution casting followed by a solvent evaporation method. Four types of membranes with varied concentrations of grapefruit seed extract (GSE) i.e., 2.5-10 wt% was incorporated in the films. The prepared membranes were assessed for transparency test, mechanical properties, surface morphology, permeability test for O2, and antimicrobial properties. The PVA/starch-10% GSE loaded film showed excellent mechanical properties showing highest 1344 ± 0.7% elongation at break but poor optical transparency with 53.8% to 68.61%. The Scanning Electron Microscopic study reveals the good compatibility between the PVA, Starch, and GSE. The gas permeability test reveals that the prepared films have shown good resistance to the O2 permeability 0.0326-0.316 Barrer at 20 kg/cm2 feed pressure for the prepared membranes showing excellent performance. By adding the little amount of GSE into the PVA/starch blend membranes showed promising antimicrobial efficacy against MNV-1. For 4 h. incubation, PVA/starch blend membranes containing 2.5%, 5%, and 10% GSE caused MNV-1 reductions of 0.92, 1.89, and 2.27 log PFU/ml, respectively. Similarly, after 24 h, the 5% and 10% GSE membranes reduced MNV-1 titers by 1.90 and 3.26 log PFU/ml, respectively. Antimicrobial tests have shown excellent performance to resist microorganisms. The water uptake capacity of the membrane is found 72% for the PVA/starch pristine membrane and is reduced to 32% for the 10% GSE embedded membrane. Since the current pandemic situation due to COVID-19 occurred by SARSCOV2, the prepared GSE incorporated polymeric blend films are the rays of hope in the packaging of food stuff.

Abstract
Agroindustry needs novel materials to replace synthetic plastics. This article introduces sodium alginate films with antioxidant properties. The films, which were incorporated with hydroalcoholic extract of Macrocystis pyrifera, were tested on sliced Hass avocados.
The research featured sodium alginate films incorporated with hydroalcoholic extracts of M. pyrifera. Uncoated avocado halves served as control, while the experimental samples were covered with polymer film with or without hydroalcoholic extract. A set of experiments made it possible to evaluate the effect of the extracts on polymeric matrices, release kinetics, and sensory profile of halved Hass avocados.
A greater concentration of hydroalcoholic extracts increased the content of phenolic compounds and their antioxidant activity. As a result, the bands in the carboxylate groups of sodium alginate became more intense. Crystallinity decreased, whereas opacity and mass loss percentage increased, and conglomerates appeared on the surface of the films. These processes fit the KorsmeyerPeppas kinetic model because they resulted from a combination of diffusion and swelling mechanisms in the films.
The films incorporated with hydroalcoholic extract of M. pyrifera proved to be an effective alternative to traditional fruit
wrapping materials.

Abstract
Consumers are now more concerned about food safety and hygiene following the COVID-19 pandemic. Antimicrobial packaging has attracted increased interest by reducing contamination of food surfaces to deliver quality and safe food while maintaining shelf life. Active packaging materials to reduce contamination or inhibit viral activity in packaged foods and on packaging surfaces are mostly prepared using solvent casting, but very few materials demonstrate antiviral activity on foods of animal origin, which are important in the human diet. Incorporation of silver nanoparticles, essential oils and natural plant extracts as antimicrobial agents in/on polymeric matrices provides improved antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. This paper reviews recent developments in antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral packaging incorporating natural or synthetic compounds using preparation methods including extrusion, solvent casting and surface modification treatment for surface coating and their applications in several foods (i.e., bakery products, fruits and vegetables, meat and meat products, fish and seafood and milk and dairy foods). Findings showed that antimicrobial material as films, coated films, coating and pouches exhibited efficient antimicrobial activity in vitro but lower activity in real food systems. Antimicrobial activity depends on (i) polar or non-polar food components, (ii) interactions between antimicrobial compounds and the polymer materials and (iii) interactions between environmental conditions and active films (i.e., relative humidity, oxygen and water vapor permeability and temperature) that impact the migration or diffusion of active compounds in foods. Knowledge gained from the plethora of existing studies on antimicrobial polymers can be effectively utilized to develop multifunctional antimicrobial materials that can protect food products and packaging surfaces from SARS-CoV-2 contamination.

Abstract
The development of new materials for food packaging applications is necessary to reduce the excessive use of disposable plastics and their environmental impact. Biodegradable polymers represent an alternative means of mitigating the problem. To add value to biodegradable materials and to enhance food preservation, the incorporation of active compounds into the polymer matrix is an affordable strategy. Phenolic acids are plant metabolites that can be found in multiple plant extracts and exhibit antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Compared with other natural active compounds, such as essential oils, phenolic acids do not present a high sensorial impact while exhibiting similar minimal inhibitory concentrations against different bacteria. This study summarizes and discusses recent studies about the potential of both phenolic acids/plant extracts and biodegradable polymers as active food packaging materials, their properties, interactions, and the factors that could affect their antimicrobial efficiency. The molecular structure of phenolic acids greatly affects their potential antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity, as well as their specific interactions with polymer matrices and food substrates. These interactions, in turn, can lead to plasticizing or cross-linking effects. In the present study, the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of different biodegradable films with phenolic acids have been described, as well as the main factors affecting the active properties of these films as useful materials for active packaging development. More studies applying these active materials in real foods are required.

Abstract
In this study, EGCG loaded melanin-like nanoparticles (EGCG@MNPs) were incorporated into chitosan matrix to prepare an active nanocomposite food packaging film, chitosan-EGCG@MNPs (CH-EM). The influence of EGCG@MNPs on the physical and biological properties of the chitosan film was investigated. The EGCG@MNPs nanoparticles were cross-linked with chitosan through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and uniformly distributed in the matrix. Besides, the incorporation of EGCG@MNPs tremendously improved the solubility, swelling ratio and water vapor barrier properties of the film, and permitted superior ultraviolet rays blocking property. In addition, the mechanical properties, thermal stability and surface hydrophobicity have also been significantly improved. The CH-EM2.0 nanocomposite films also showed excellent oxidation resistance (58.4 ± 4.4%, DPPH and 92.4 ± 1.3%, ABTS+), and strong inhibitory ability against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The experimental results comprehensively showed that the prepared chitosan-EGCG@MNPs nanocomposite film offering excellent potential for eco-friendly active food packaging.

Abstract
Food contamination with microorganisms is responsible for food spoilage, deterioration and change of organoleptic properties of foods. Besides, the growth of pathogenic microorganisms can provoke serious health problems if food is consumed. Innovative packaging, such as active packaging, is increasing rapidly in the food industry, especially in applying antimicrobials into delivery systems, such as sachets. Chile is a relevant hotspot for biodiversity conservation and a source of unique bio-resources with antimicrobial potential. In this review, fifteen native plants with antimicrobial properties are described. Their antimicrobial effects include an effect against human pathogens. Considering the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, searching for new antimicrobials to design new strategies for food pathogen control is necessary. Chilean flora is a promising source of antimicrobials to be used in active packaging. However, further studies are required to advance from laboratory tests of their antimicrobial effects to their possible effects and uses in active films.

Abstract
In the last decades, the interest in seaweed has significantly increased. Bioactive compounds from seaweed’s currently receive major attention from pharmaceutical companies as they express several interesting biological activities which are beneficial for humans. The structural diversity of seaweed metabolites provides diverse biological activities which are expressed through diverse mechanisms of actions. This review mainly focuses on the antiviral activity of seaweed’s extracts, highlighting the mechanisms of actions of some seaweed molecules against infection caused by different types of enveloped viruses: influenza, Lentivirus (HIV-1), Herpes viruses, and coronaviruses. Seaweed metabolites with antiviral properties can act trough different pathways by increasing the host’s defense system or through targeting and blocking virus replication before it enters host cells. Several studies have already established the large antiviral spectrum of seaweed’s bioactive compounds. Throughout this review, antiviral mechanisms and medical applications of seaweed’s bioactive compounds are analyzed, suggesting seaweed’s potential source of antiviral compounds for the formulation of novel and natural antiviral drugs.

Abstract
In this study, abundant starch was separated from the industrial crop Dioscorea zingiberensis C.H. Wright (DZW), and a novel bioactive packaging film loaded with oregano essential oil (OEO) was prepared and characterized. NaClO solution worked as a bleacher to prepare uniform starch powder from DZW tubers. OEO was selected from among three essential oils of Labiatae family plants for its strongest antibacterial activity. After the addition of OEO into the starch-based film, the UV-vis shielding property and antioxidant activity were enhanced. Meanwhile, the films still have a considerable performance in transparency, mechanical strength and water vapor permeability after incorporated with OEO. Furthermore, the 3% OEO-loaded starch film exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. It effectively lowered the total viable count of fresh chicken under 4 °C preservation conditions. These results revealed that the OEO-loaded DZW starch film can exert a positive effect on maintaining the quality and extending the shelf life of fresh meat. Therefore, readily accessible DZW tubers and oregano are very promising resources for application in degradable bioactive packaging film.

Abstract
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2019, and the catastrophe faced by the world in 2020, the food industry was one of the most affected industries. On the one hand, the pandemic-induced fear and lockdown in several countries increased the online delivery of food products, resulting in a drastic increase in single-use plastic packaging waste. On the other hand, several reports revealed the spread of the viral infection through food products and packaging. This significantly affected consumer behavior, which directly influenced the market dynamics of the food industry. Still, a complete recovery from this situation seems a while away, and there is a need to focus on a potential solution that can address both of these issues. Several biomaterials that possess antiviral activities, in addition to being natural and biodegradable, are being studied for food packaging applications. However, the research community has been ignorant of this aspect, as the focus has mainly been on antibacterial and antifungal activities for the enhancement of food shelf life. This review aims to cover the different perspectives of antiviral food packaging materials using established technology. It focuses on the basic principles of antiviral activity and its mechanisms. Furthermore, the antiviral activities of several nanomaterials, biopolymers, natural oils and extracts, polyphenolic compounds, etc., are discussed.

Abstract
Composite films were prepared with alginate and roselle extract (HE) at different concentrations (1%, 3%, and 5% w/v) via solvent casting technique and analyzed in terms of physical, mechanical, and antibacterial properties. The incorporation of HE into alginate films resulted in rough and heterogeneous surface characteristics with increasing concentrations of HE. The thickness and water vapor permeability of alginate-HE composite films were significantly higher (p < 0.05) compared to pure alginate films. Moreover, water content, solubility, swelling, tensile strength, and elongation at break value of the composite films decreased (p < 0.05) with increasing concentrations of the extract. FTIR spectra revealed shifts and intensity variations in the composite films and the formation of new peaks suggesting a possible interaction between alginate and HE. Alginate-HE films exhibited good antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacteria. The antibacterial effect of the films, more pronounced against Gram-positive bacteria, increased with higher amounts of HE. The resulting films may be utilised as new biodegradable, antibacterial films in the food packaging industry to prolong shelf life and preserve food safety. Abstract
The incorporation of herbal extracts in wound dressing materials is an important concept that has been researched recently. In this study, alginate films incorporated in the various ratio (0.25–1% v/v) of Hypericum perforatum extract (HPE) for potential applications of wound dressing were successfully prepared by solvent-casting method. The obtained films were examined for cytotoxicity, in vitro wound healing potential, swelling behavior, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. When compared to the alginate film (Al) alone, HPE incorporated alginate films (HPE/Al) exhibit improved antioxidant properties according to the results of CUPRAC assay and antioxidant activity increases with the rate of HPE. Also, HPE/Al films exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, and addition with the HPE extract into films significantly increased the antibacterial activity against S. aureus. All film samples had no cytotoxic effects on fibroblast cell line and HPE/Al films showed a proliferative effect with high extract concentrations (1%) compared to extract free-films. Also, scratch assay results show that films containing 0.5% (v/v) HPE may have a positive effect on wound healing. The results have shown that the newly developed HPE incorporated alginate films are a candidate as antibacterial, and antioxidant wound dressing for use on burn or excision wounds.

Abstract
The production of olive oil and wine are two of the main agri-food economic activities in Southern Europe. They generate large amounts of solid and liquid wastes (e.g., olive pomace, olive mill wastewater, grape pomace, grape stems, wine lees, and wine processing wastewater) that represent a major environmental problem. Consequently, the management of these residues has become a big challenge for these industries, since they are harmful to the environment but rich in bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols. In recent years, the recovery of phenolic compounds has been proposed as a smart strategy for the valorization of these by-products, from a circular economy perspective. This review aims to provide a comprehensive description of the state of the art of techniques available for the analysis, extraction, and purification of polyphenols from the olive mill and winery residues. Thus, the integration and implementation of these techniques could provide a sustainable solution to the olive oil and winery sectors.

Abstract
As part of a biopolymer matrix, pectin was investigated to obtain an engineered jam, due to its biodegradability. Only a few examples of pectin-based nanocomposites are present in the literature, and even fewer such bionanocomposites utilize nanocarbon as a filler-mostly for use in food packaging. In the present paper, ecofriendly nanocomposites made from household reagents and displaying multiple properties are presented. In particular, the electrical behavior and viscoelastic properties of a commercial jam were modulated by loading the jam with carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplates. A new nanocomposite class based on commercial jam was studied, estimating the percolation threshold for each filler. The electrical characterization and the rheological measurements suggest that the behavior above the percolation threshold is influenced by the different morphology-i.e., one-dimensional or two-dimensional-of the fillers. These outcomes encourage further studies on the use of household materials in producing advanced and innovative materials, in order to reduce the environmental impact of new technologies, without giving up advanced devices endowed with different physical properties.

Abstract
Edible films and coatings (EFC) are macromolecular-based structures forming thin layers that are usually studied as tools to improve food stability, sometimes being considered as parts of both the packaging system and the food itself. However, EFC are not mere packaging materials, and sometimes they do not even play roles related to those of packaging. This graphical review summarizes possible roles of EFC, including primary packaging, keeping water activity gradients between food components, controlling mass transfer on food processing, carrying active components, or serving as sources of sensory appeal. EFC may even be designed in a way that two or more of those roles may be played simultaneously.

Abstract
Only a mere fraction of the huge variety of human pathogenic viruses can be targeted by the currently available spectrum of antiviral drugs. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak has highlighted the urgent need for molecules that can be deployed quickly to treat novel, developing or re-emerging viral infections. Sulfated polysaccharides are found on the surfaces of both the susceptible host cells and the majority of human viruses, and thus can play an important role during viral infection. Such polysaccharides widely occurring in natural sources, specifically those converted into sulfated varieties, have already proved to possess a high level and sometimes also broad-spectrum antiviral activity. This antiviral potency can be determined through multifold molecular pathways, which in many cases have low profiles of cytotoxicity. Consequently, several new polysaccharide-derived drugs are currently being investigated in clinical settings. We reviewed the present status of research on sulfated polysaccharide-based antiviral agents, their structural characteristics, structure-activity relationships, and the potential of clinical application. Furthermore, the molecular mechanisms of sulfated polysaccharides involved in viral infection or in antiviral activity, respectively, are discussed, together with a focus on the emerging methodology contributing to polysaccharide-based drug development.

Abstract
A new type of film packaging made from natural polysaccharide materials, with its environmental safety and friendliness, is considered as a potential substitute for plastics. Novel polysaccharide composite films based upon citrus pectin (CP) and sodium alginate (SA) were successfully prepared and characterized, containing pterostilbene (PTE) at various concentrations (0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2 mM). The rheological analysis displayed that all film-forming liquids performed no gelation behavior with G" > G' at low frequency and weak gelation with G" < G' at high frequency. The SA-CP films had good tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EB), while adding PTE as an antioxidant to the film reduced both the values. Of note, the SA-CP films with PTE had better moisture resistance than that of the pure SA-CP films, which was related to the changes of its microstructure. The increased roughness of the films containing PTE was observed by microscope. After calcium chloride cross-linking, the water solubility of the films was reduced, while its thermal stability was improved. Notably, the accretion of PTE expressively enhanced the antioxidant properties of the SA-CP films. Thus, the SA-CP composite films containing PTE could be utilized as an excellent antioxidant packaging material.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to prepare active films based on pectin and polyphenol-rich extracts from Tommy Atkins mango peels. Aqueous and methanolic extracts showed a variety of phenolic compounds that were identified by UPLC-MS analysis, and a high content of total phenolics that were quantified by the Folin-Ciocalteau method. The methanolic extract showed better results in antioxidant tests and was more effective in inhibiting the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The pectin extracted from mango peels showed good thermal stability and a degree of methoxylation of 58.3% by 1H NMR. The films containing the phenolic extracts showed lower water vapor permeability when compared to the control film (without any phenolic extracts). The incorporation of the extracts led to an increase in elongation (ε) and a decrease in tensile strength (σ) and modulus of elasticity (Y). The films with aqueous or methanolic extracts showed higher antioxidant activity in terms of inhibition of the DPPH radical. Therefore, the films developed in this work are presented as a promising alternative for food packaging and/or coating applications.

Abstract
In this study, environmentally friendly bionanocomposite films were prepared by incorporating phlorotannins from Sargassum (PS) into konjac glucomannan (KGM)/cotton cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) composites. The effects of different concentrations of PS (5%, 9%, 13%, and 17%, w/w) on the microstructure, physical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the resultant bionanocomposite films were evaluated. The results of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectra showed that PS was well compatible with the KGM/CNC composites matrix, which led to form a compact and uniform structure of the films. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry demonstrated that incorporating PS improved the heat stability of KGM/CNC bionanocomposite films. And addition of the appropriate amount of PS improved the mechanical and water-vapor barrier-related properties of the bionanocomposite film. For instance, with 9% PS, the tensile strength of the KGM/CNC/PS bionanocomposite film increased by 33.9%, and the water-vapor transmittance decreased by 41.67% compared to that of the KGM/CNC films. Moreover, the addition of PS endowed the KGM/CNC film with excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Therefore, KGM/CNC/PS bionanocomposite films have great potential to be applicated as active packaging in the food packaging industry.

Abstract
The applications of edible coatings stemmed exclusively from alginate in food packaging are restricted due to their inherent deficient antimicrobial, barrier, and UV-barrier properties. In this work, we aimed to design smart alginate-based coatings for active food packaging through the addition of both aloe vera (AV) and garlic oil (GO). The interactions between the film components were verified by FTIR and XRD. Thermal and mechanical properties were improved by the presence of AV and GO. The presence of AV and GO did not significantly influence the transparency of alginate films. The films exhibited a significant UV-shielding to all UV regions. Water vapor permeability was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced either through the incorporation of AV or GO. The antimicrobial properties of the prepared films were considerably improved by the presence of AV and GO. The shelf-life of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) was extended when coated with the alginate film incorporated with AV and GO. Owing to the outstanding UV-shielding, mechanical, thermal, and antimicrobial properties, the alginate/AV/GO active coatings could potentially be implemented in the food packaging industry.

Abstract
Over the decades, the world has witnessed diverse virus associated pandemics. The significant inhibitory effects of marine sulfated polysaccharides against SARS-CoV-2 shows its therapeutic potential in future biomedical applications and drug development. Algal polysaccharides exhibited significant role in antimicrobial, antitumor, antioxidative, antiviral, anticoagulant, antihepatotoxic and immunomodulating activities. Owing to their health benefits, the sulfated polysaccharides from marine algae are a great deal of interest globally. Algal polysaccharides such as agar, alginate, carrageenans, porphyran, fucoidan, laminaran and ulvans are investigated for their nutraceutical potential at different stages of infection processes, structural diversity, complexity and mechanism of action. In this review, we focus on the recent antiviral studies of the marine algae-based polysaccharides and their potential towards antiviral medicines.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has made it essential to explore alternative antiviral materials. Alginate is a biodegradable, renewable, biocompatible, water-soluble and antiviral biopolymer with many potential biomedical applications. In this regard, this review shows 17 types of viruses that have been tested in contact with alginate and its related biomaterials. Most of these studies show that alginate-based materials possess little or no toxicity and are able to inhibit a wide variety of viruses affecting different organisms: in humans by the human immunodeficiency virus type 1, the hepatitis A, B, and C viruses, Sindbis virus, herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, poliovirus type 1, rabies virus, rubella virus, and the influenza virus; in mice by the murine norovirus; in bacteria by the T4 coliphage, and in plants by the tobacco mosaic virus and the potato virus X. Many of these are enveloped positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses, like SARS-CoV-2, which render alginate-based materials highly promising in the COVID-19 pandemic.
