Bioactive agar-based functional composite film incorporated with copper sulfide nanoparticles

Electrospun medicated gelatin/polycaprolactone Janus fibers for photothermal-chem combined therapy of liver cancer

Liver cancer is a common cancer in the world, and core-shell nanoparticles as a commonly used combination therapy for local tumor ablation, have many shortcomings. In this study, photothermal Janus nanofibers were prepared using a electrospinning technology for tumor treatment, and the products were characterized and in vitro photothermal performance investigated. The micromorphology analysis showed that the photothermic agent CuS and electrospun fibers (loaded with CuS and anticancer drug dihydromyricetin) were successfully prepared, with diameters of 11.58 ± 0.27 μm and 1.19 ± 0.01 μm, respectively. Water contact angle and tensile test indicated that the fiber membranes has a certain hydrophilic adhesion and excellent mechanical strength. The fiber membranes has 808 nm near-infrared laser photothermal heating performance and photothermal stability, and it also has a strong response to the laser that penetrates biological tissue. In addition, in vitro cell culture and in vivo implantation study showed that the fiber membranes could kill HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells combined with photothermal-chem and could be enriched in the implantation area, respectively. Hence, the Janus membranes may be a potential cancer treatment material.

Development of pH-freshness smart label based on gellan gum film incorporated with red cabbage anthocyanins extract and its application in postharvest mushroom

Novel colorimetric films based on gellan gum (GG) containing red cabbage anthocyanins extract (RCAE) were prepared as pH-freshness smart labels for real-time visual detection of mushroom freshness. The GG/RCAE films had excellent pH and ammonia sensitivity. The GG/RCAE-0.2-0.3 films had the highest sensitivity to acetic acid. The SEM micrographs, AFM images, FT-IR and XRD spectra demonstrated that RCAE were successfully combined into the film-forming substrate. The incorporation of RCAE resulted in the increase of thermal stability, opacity and surface hydrophobicity of films. Meanwhile, the GG/RCAE-0.2 film exhibited stronger tensile strength and excellent color stability at 4℃. The color changes of GG/RCAE-0.2 film were visually easier to distinguish during the storage of mushroom. The results showed the GG/RCAE films could be used as pH-freshness smart labels to detect the freshness of fruits and vegetables.

Advanced technologies in biodegradable packaging using intelligent sensing to fight food waste

The limitation of conventional packaging in demonstrating accurate and real-time food expiration dates leads to food waste and foodborne diseases. Real-time food quality monitoring via intelligent packaging could be an effective solution to reduce food waste and foodborne illnesses. This review focuses on recent technological advances incorporated into food packaging for monitoring food spoilage, with a major focus on paper-based sensors and their combination with smartphone. This review paper offers a comprehensive exploration of advanced macromolecular technologies in biodegradable packaging, a general overview of paper-based probes and their incorporation into food packaging coupled with intelligent sensing mechanisms for monitoring food freshness. Given the escalating global concerns surrounding food waste, our manuscript serves as a pivotal resource, consolidating current research findings and highlighting the transformative potential of these innovative packaging solutions. We also highlight the current intelligent paper-based food freshness sensors and their various advantages and limitations. Examples of implementation of paper-based sensors/probes for food storage and their accuracy are presented. Finally, we examined how intelligent packaging can be an alternative to reduce food waste. Several technologies discussed here have good potential to be used in food packaging for real-time food monitoring, especially when combined with smartphone diagnosis.

Construction of carboxymethyl chitosan/PVA/chitin nanowhiskers multicomponent film activated with Cotylelobium lanceolatum phenolics and in situ SeNP for enhanced packaging application

This work focused on the construction of bioactive packaging films based on carboxymethyl chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) (CMP) as polymeric matrix and fortified with chitin nanowhiskers, Cotylelobium lanceolatum phenolic extract (CL) and in situ synthesized nano selenium. Extensive morphological, microstructural, physical and mechanical analysis revealed that the nanofillers were well-dispersed and integrated into CMP matrix. Incorporation of the extract and nano selenium produced excellent UV blocking properties without seriously compromising the transparency of the composite (CMP/CNW/CLNS1) film. Moreover, blending of CMP with the filler materials significantly elevated (p < 0.05) the surface hydrophobicity (WCA by 35.4°), water barrier (by 53.86 %), tensile strength (from 29.35 to 33.09 MPa), elongation at break (from 64.28 to 96.48 %), and thermal properties of the resultant CMP/CNW/CLNS1 film, with concomitant reduction in water solubility and swellability. Furthermore, the CMP/CNW/CLNS films exhibited remarkable improvement in antioxidant properties. When used for packaging of peeled fresh garlic cloves, the CMP/CNW/CLNS1 film pouch, not the plain CMP or CMP/CNW film pouches, inhibited weight loss, oxidative browning, and the emergence of black mold on the packaged cloves. The developed CMP/CNW/CLNS1 film demonstrated enhanced capacity to safeguard the quality of packaged food and improved shelf life. Therefore, the present study suggests that incorporation of CNW/CLNS into carboxymethyl chitosan/PVA films is a suitable and facile strategy for the fabrication of films with improved mechanical, physico-chemical and functional properties with great potential for application as a sustainable active packaging material in the food industry.

Furoic acid-mediated konjac glucomannan/flaxseed gum based green biodegradable antibacterial film for Shine-Muscat grape preservation

Considering the growing threats to the environment and human health, such as plastic pollution and food spoilage, the development of naturally antibacterial food packaging materials with biodegradable capabilities has recently attracted considerable attention. This work applies the concept of green environmental protection to packaging technology, and a new type of green edible antibacterial packaging film was developed. The basic idea is to incorporate furoic acid (FA), which possesses excellent antibacterial activity, into the flaxseed gum and konjac glucomannan matrix (FK) as a filler to obtain a series of FK-FA bioactive films. This incorporation simultaneously improves the hydrophobicity and UV-barrier ability by 12.28 % and 42.87 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the diameters of the antibacterial zone of the FK-FA0.4% films (composite FK films containing 0.4 % FA) against E. coli and S. aureus increased to 38.98 mm and 36.29 mm from 24.00 mm of pure FK film, respectively. As a consequence, the grape sample sealed with FK-FA0.4% film remained edible on the 18th day of storage, while those packaged with commercial PE film and pure FK were seriously rotted and lost edible value on the 12th day, further confirming the enhanced preservation capacity. Finally, the as-prepared films were established to be biodegradable and were almost completely degraded within 25 days under simulated environmental conditions. Overall, these promising results show the potential of FK-FA films for replacing plastic packaging materials as eco-friendly edible films with prolonged shelf life for active packaging.

Effect of Nano-Silica and Sorbitol on the Properties of Chitosan-Based Composite Films

Chitosan and its derivatives are widely used in food packaging, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical, textile, paper, agriculture, and environmental industries. However, the flexibility of chitosan films is extremely poor, which limits its relevant applications to a large extent. In this paper, chitosan/sorbitol/nano-silica (CS/sorbitol/SiO2) composite films were prepared by the casting film method using chitosan, sorbitol, Tween-80 and nano-SiO2 as raw materials. The structure of the films was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, electron scanning microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The effects of sorbitol and nano-silica dosage on the mechanical properties, thermal properties and water vapor barrier properties of the composite film were investigated. The results show that with the gradual increase in sorbitol (≤75 wt %), the elongation at the break of chitosan/sorbitol films significantly increased. When the addition of sorbitol was 75 wt %, the elongation at break of the chitosan/sorbitol composite film was 13 times higher than that of the chitosan film. Moreover, nano-SiO2 can further improve the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the chitosan/sorbitol composite films. When the amount of nano-silica was 4.5 wt %, the composite film became more flexible, with a maximum elongation of 90.8% (which is 14 times that of chitosan film), and its toughness increased to 10.52 MJm-3 (which is 6 times that of chitosan film). This study balances the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite films by adding a plasticizer and nano-filler, providing a reference for the preparation of chitosan composites or their blending with other polymers, and has practical guiding significance for the industrial production of biomass plastics.

Biopolymer-Based Sustainable Food Packaging Materials: Challenges, Solutions, and Applications

Biopolymer-based packaging materials have become of greater interest to the world due to their biodegradability, renewability, and biocompatibility. In recent years, numerous biopolymers-such as starch, chitosan, carrageenan, polylactic acid, etc.-have been investigated for their potential application in food packaging. Reinforcement agents such as nanofillers and active agents improve the properties of the biopolymers, making them suitable for active and intelligent packaging. Some of the packaging materials, e.g., cellulose, starch, polylactic acid, and polybutylene adipate terephthalate, are currently used in the packaging industry. The trend of using biopolymers in the packaging industry has increased immensely; therefore, many legislations have been approved by various organizations. This review article describes various challenges and possible solutions associated with food packaging materials. It covers a wide range of biopolymers used in food packaging and the limitations of using them in their pure form. Finally, a SWOT analysis is presented for biopolymers, and the future trends are discussed. Biopolymers are eco-friendly, biodegradable, nontoxic, renewable, and biocompatible alternatives to synthetic packaging materials. Research shows that biopolymer-based packaging materials are of great essence in combined form, and further studies are needed for them to be used as an alternative packaging material.

Fabrication and characterization of hybrid eco-friendly high methoxyl pectin/gelatin/TiO2/curcumin (PGTC) nanocomposite biofilms for salmon fillet packaging

Hybrid eco-friendly nanocomposite films were fabricated by blending high-methoxyl pectin, gelatin, TiO₂, and curcumin through the solution casting method. Various concentrations (0-5 wt%) of TiO₂ nanoparticles (TNPs) and curcumin as an organic filler were added to the blend solutions. A high TNP concentration affected the surface morphology, roughness, and compactness of the films. Additionally, 3D mapping revealed the nanoparticle distribution in the film layers. Moisture content, water solubility, and light transmittance reduced dramatically with increasing TNP content, in accordance with the water vapor and oxygen permeabilities. X-ray diffraction revealed that the films were semicrystalline nanocomposites, and the thermal properties of the films increased when 5 wt% of TNPs was incorporated into the blend solution. Fourier-transform infrared and Raman analyses revealed interactions among biopolymers, nanoparticles, and organic fillers through hydrogen bonding. The shelf life of fresh salmon fillets was prolonged to six days for all groups, revealed by total viable counts and psychrotrophic bacteria counts, and the pH of the salmon fillets could be extended until the sixth day for all groups. Biodegradation assays demonstrated a significant weight loss in the nanocomposite films. Therefore, a nanocomposite film with 5 wt% TNPs could potentially be cytotoxic to NIH 3T3 cells.

Copper-based nanoparticles for biopolymer-based functional films in food packaging applications

This review summarizes the latest developments in the design, fabrication, and application of various Cu-based nanofillers to prepare biopolymer-based functional packaging films, focusing on the effects of inorganic nanoparticles on the optical, mechanical, gas barrier properties, moisture sensitivity, and functional properties of the films. In addition, the potential application of Cu-based nanoparticle-added biopolymer films for fresh food preservation and the effect of nanoparticle migration on food safety were discussed. The incorporation of Cu-based nanoparticles improved the film properties with enhanced functional performance. Cu-based nanoparticles such as copper oxide, copper sulfide, copper ions, and copper alloys affect biopolymer-based films differently. The properties of composite films containing Cu-based nanoparticles depend on the concentration of the filler, the state of dispersion, and the interaction of the nanoparticles with the biopolymer matrix in the film. The composite film filled with Cu-based nanoparticles effectively extended the shelf life by maintaining the quality of various fresh foods and securing safety. However, studies on the migration characteristics and safety of copper-based nanoparticle food packaging films are currently being conducted on plastic-based films such as polyethylene, and research on bio-based films is limited.

Nano Edible Coatings and Films Combined with Zinc Oxide and Pomegranate Peel Active Phenol Compounds Has Been to Extend the Shelf Life of Minimally Processed Pomegranates

Edible coating and film from chitosan and incorporating it with the action of ZnONPs on active phenol compounds from extracts of pomegranate peel (PPE) The physical and chemical properties of edible films composed of zinc oxide ZnONPs and active phenol compounds extracted from pomegranate peel (PPE) were investigated. Adding ZnONPs with active phenol compounds from extracted pomegranate peel(PPE) to chitosan films can provide safe edible films, decrease microbial growth and consequently prolong the shelf life of pomegranates, as well as improve the physiochemical stability of the pomegranate. The substances used in this experiment were film with a (A) extract of pomegranate peels (PPE), 5% (0.1%), (B)ZnONPs 1% (0.02%), (C) ZnONPs 2% (0.04%), (D) ZnONPs 3% (0.06%), (E) ZnONPs 1%/PPE1% (0.02%), (F) ZnONPs 2%/PPE2% (0.04%), (G) ZnONPs 3%/PPE3% (0.06%) wt% of chitosan on quality attributes and prolonging the shelf life of pomegranates were stored in plastic containers at 2 °C and 90-95% relative humidity for 20 days. The treatments of (G) ZnONPs 3%/PPE3% (0.06%) loaded on chitosan as well as chitosan and (D) ZnONPs 3% (0.06%) reduced the weight loss, had excellent microbial count until 20 days of storage, and recorded the lowest microbial count and mould & yeast colonies. Other chemical properties, such as total soluble solids content, acidity, anthocyanin content, firmness, and ascorbic acid, were investigated. Results indicated that ZnONPs 3%/PPE3% (0.06%) loaded on chitosan or ZnONPs 3% (0.06%) are the best treatments for preserving pomegranate arils. It was found that the best measurements were that the film-forming nan emulsion solutions decreased by E% 110 nm and B% 134 nm. Nano followed treatment, F% 188.7 nm, compared to nano edible films, which were A 0% 1312 nm.

Mechanical, Barrier and Thermal Properties of Amylose-Argan Proteins-Based Bioplastics in the Presence of Transglutaminase

The bioeconomy aims to discover new sources for producing energy and materials and to valorize byproducts that otherwise would get wasted. In this work, we investigate the possibility of producing novel bioplastics, made up of argan seed proteins (APs), extracted from argan oilcake, and amylose (AM), obtained from barley plants through an RNA interference technique. Argan, Argania spinosa, is a plant widespread in arid regions of Northern Africa, where it plays a fundamental socio-ecological role. Argan seeds are used to obtain a biologically active and edible oil, producing a byproduct, the oilcake, that is rich in proteins, fibers, and fats, and is generally used as animal food. Recently, argan oilcakes have been attracting attention as a waste to be recovered to obtain high-added-value products. Here, APs were chosen to test the performance of blended bioplastics with AM, because they have the potential to improve the properties of the final product. High-AM-starches present attractive features for use as bioplastics, including a higher gel-forming capacity, a higher thermal stability, and reduced swelling compared to normal starch. It has already been demonstrated that pure AM-based films provide more suitable properties than normal starch-based films. Here, we report on the performance of these novel blended bioplastics in terms of their mechanical, barrier, and thermal properties; and the effect of the enzyme microbial transglutaminase (mTGase) as a reticulating agent for AP's components was also studied. These results contribute to the development of novel sustainable bioplastics with improved properties and confirm the possibility of valorizing the byproduct, APs, using them as a new raw material.

Nanocatalytic Hydrogel with Rapid Photodisinfection and Robust Adhesion for Fortified Cutaneous Regeneration

Chronic inflammation caused by invasive bacterial infections severely interferes with the normal healing process of skin regeneration. Hypoxia of the infection microenvironment (IME) seriously affects the antibacterial effect of photodynamic therapy in phototherapy. To address this serious issue, a nanocatalytic hydrogel with an enhanced phototherapy effect consisting of a hydrogel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) scaffold, MXene/CuS bio-heterojunction, and polydopamine (PDA) for photothermal antibacterial effects and promoting skin regeneration is designed. The MXene/CuS bio-heterojunction has a benign photothermal effect. Singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were generated under near-infrared light, which made the hydrogel system have good antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The addition of PDA further improves the biocompatibility and endows the nanocatalytic hydrogel with adhesion. Additionally, in vivo assays display that the nanocatalytic hydrogel has good skin regeneration ability, including ability to kill bacteria, and promotes capillary angiogenesis and collagen deposition. This work proposes an approach for nanocatalyzed hydrogels with an activated IME response to treat wound infections by enhancing the phototherapeutic effects.

Recent advances in metal sulfide nanoparticle-added bionanocomposite films for food packaging applications

Metal sulfide nanoparticles have recently attracted much attention due to their unique physical and functional properties. Metal sulfide nanoparticles used as optoelectronic and biomedical materials in the past decades are promising for making functional nanocomposite films due to their low toxicity and strong antibacterial activity. Recently, copper sulfide and zinc sulfide nanomaterials have been used to produce food packaging films for active packaging. Metal sulfide nanoparticles added as nanofillers are attracting attention in packaging applications due to their excellent potential to improve mechanical, barrier properties, and antibacterial activity. This review covers the fabrication process and important applications of metal sulfide nanoparticles. The development of metal sulfides reinforcing mainly copper sulfide and zinc sulfide nanomaterials as multifunctional nanofillers in bio-based films for active packaging applications has been comprehensively reviewed. As the recognition of metal sulfide nanoparticles as a functional filler increases, the development and application potential of active packaging films using them is expected to increase.

Shikonin Functionalized Packaging Film for Monitoring the Freshness of Shrimp

A shikonin embedded smart and active food packaging film was produced using a binary mixture of gelatin and cellulose nanofiber (CNF). Shikonin is an alcohol-soluble natural pigment extracted from Lithospermum erythrorhizon root. The fabricated film showed good pH-responsive color changes and volatile gas sensing properties. Moreover, the film exhibited excellent antioxidant and antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogens. The shikonin incorporated gelatin/CNF-based film showed excellent UV-light barrier properties (>95%) and high tensile strength (>80 MPa), which is useful for food packaging. The hydrodynamic properties of the film were also slightly changed in the presence of shikonin, but the thermal stability and water vapor permeability remained unaffected. Thus, the inclusion of shikonin in the gelatin/CNF-based film improves not only the physical properties but also the functional properties. The film’s color indicator properties also clearly show shrimp’s freshness and spoilage during storage for 48 h. The shikonin-based functional film is expected to be a promising tool for multi-purpose smart and active food packaging applications.

Gelatin/Cellulose Nanofiber-Based Functional Nanocomposite Film Incorporated with Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

A novel bio-based nanocomposite film was developed using the combination of gelatine and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) as a polymer matrix and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONP) as nanofillers. The nanocomposite film solution was developed using simple solution mixing and film prepared by the following casting methods. The fabricated nanocomposite film containing 2 wt% of ZnONP shows excellent UV-light barrier properties (>95%) and high transparency (>75%). The presence of ZnONP also improves the mechanical strength of the film by ~30% compared to pristine gelatin/CNF-based film, while the flexibility and rigidity of the nanocomposite film were also slightly improved. The addition of ZnONP slightly increased (~10%) the hydrophobicity while the water vapor barrier properties remain unaltered. The hydrodynamic properties of the bio-based film were also changed in the presence of ZnONP, moisture content and the swelling ratio slightly enhanced, whereas water solubility was decreased. Moreover, the integration of ZnONP introduced antibacterial activity toward foodborne pathogens. The fabricated bio-based nanocomposite film could be useful in active packaging applications.

Polysaccharides: Sources, Characteristics, Properties, and Their Application in Biodegradable Films

Biodegradable films emerge as alternative biomaterials to conventional packaging from fossil sources, which, in addition to offering protection and increasing the shelf life of food products, are ecologically sustainable. The materials mostly used in their formulation are based on natural polysaccharides, plasticizing agents, and bioactive components (e.g., antimicrobial agents or antioxidants). The formulation of biodegradable films from polysaccharides and various plasticizers represents an alternative for primary packaging that can be assigned to specific food products, which opens the possibility of having multiple options of biodegradable films for the same product. This review describes the main characteristics of the most abundant polysaccharides in nature and highlights their role in the formulation of biodegradable films. The compilation and discussion emphasize studies that report on the mechanical and barrier properties of biodegradable films when made from pure polysaccharides and when mixed with other polysaccharides and plasticizing agents.

Structural and Physicomechanical Properties of an Active Film Based on Potato Starch, Silver Nanoparticles, and Rose Apple (Syzygium samarangense) Extract

In the current research work, active films were made from potato starch (PS) and AgNP solution comprising of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and rose apple extract (RE) via the casting method at various concentrations. AgNP solution in the PS matrix significantly altered the physical properties such as opacity, water vapor permeability mechanical property, solubility, and swelling index of the films. The influence of AgNP solution on the properties of the films was deeply examined. The results found that the 15% AgNP solution films exhibited better physicochemical properties. The presence of AgNP solution in the PS matrix significantly improved the properties of active films which is evident from the results of FTIR and SEM. Results show that AgNPs and PS were uniformly mixed and formed continuous and homogenous films without bubbles and cracks. In addition, the AgNP solution in the films significantly improved the antibacterial activity against S. aureus than P. aeruginosa in the films.

A Facile In Situ Synthesis of Resorcinol-Mediated Silver Nanoparticles and the Fabrication of Agar-Based Functional Nanocomposite Films

The in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was performed using resorcinol and agar to produce agar-based antioxidant and antimicrobial films. AgNPs were regularly dispersed on the film matrix, and their presence improved the thermal stability of films. Additionally, the addition of AgNPs slightly increased the agar-based film’s tensile strength (~10%), hydrophobicity (~40%), and water vapor barrier properties (~20%) at 1.5 wt% of AgNP concentration. The resorcinol also imparted UV-barrier and antioxidant activity to the agar-based film. In particular, the agar-based film containing a higher quantity of AgNPs (>1.0 wt%) was highly effective against the foodborne pathogenic bacteria L. monocytogenes and E. coli. Therefore, agar-based composite films with improved physicochemical and functional properties may be promising for active packaging.

Recent insights into carrageenan-based bio-nanocomposite polymers in food applications: A review

Nanotechnology has proven as progressive technology that enables to contribute, develop several effective and sustainable changes in food products. Incorporating nanomaterials like TiO₂, SiO₂, Halloysite nano clay, Copper sulfide, Bentonite nano clay, in carrageenan to develop innovative packaging materials with augmented mechanical and antimicrobial properties along with moisture and gas barrier properties that can produce safe and healthy foods. Intervention of carrageenan-based bio-nanocomposites as food packaging constituents has shown promising results in increasing the shelf stability and food quality by arresting the microbial growth. Nanomaterials can be incorporated within the carrageenan for developing active packaging systems for continuous protection of food products under different storage environments from farm to the fork to ensure quality and safety of foods. Carrageenan based bio nanocomposite packaging materials can be helpful to reduce the environmental concerns due to their high biodegradability index. This review gives insight about the current trends in the applications of carrageenan-based bio nanocomposites for different food packaging applications.

Montmorillonite clay and quaternary ammonium silane-reinforced pullulan/agar-based nanocomposites and their properties for packaging applications

Synergistic combinations of pullulan, agar, montmorillonite (MMT) clay, and quaternary ammonium silane (QAS)-based (Pullulan/agar/MMT clay/QAS) active nanocomposites were prepared by a simple, cost-effective method. The Pullulan/agar/MMT clay/QAS nanocomposites were studied via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses. The concentration of MMT clay played a very important role in the properties of the nanocomposites. However, the transparency of the composite was not significantly affected by the addition of MMT clay. The ultraviolet (UV) transmittance of Pullulan/agar/MMT clay/QAS was in the range of 91.4-79.8 at 600 nm. The thermal and mechanical properties were significantly improved by the MMT clay. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the composites were in the range of 23.8-39.7 MPa and 37.2-26.9%, respectively. The long alkyl chain in QAS significantly improved the hydrophobic nature of the Pullulan/agar/MMT clay nanocomposites, impacting the contact angle (66.2-71.2°), water vapor permeability (3.17-2.20 × 10^-9 g/m² Pa·s), and swelling ratio (1837-836%). The combination of Pullulan/agar/MMT clay/QAS had a synergistic effect on the rheological properties. MMT clay and QAS significantly increased the viscosity, storage, and loss modulus of the hydrogel composites. With the addition of QAS, the Pullulan/agar/MMT clay nanocomposites showed good antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens.

Carrageenan/agar-based functional film integrated with zinc sulfide nanoparticles and Pickering emulsion of tea tree essential oil for active packaging applications

A functional carrageenan/agar-based film was prepared by combining tea tree oil Pickering emulsion (PET) and zinc sulfide nanoparticles (ZnSNP). PET was formulated using tea tree essential oil stabilized with nanocellulose fibers. PET and ZnSNPs were uniformly dispersed in the binary polymer matrix and formed compatible films. The incorporation of ZnSNPs improved the mechanical strength, whereas PET slightly decreased the strength, but the combined addition of ZnSNP and PET maintained the mechanical strength with slightly improved flexibility. The addition of ZnSNP and PET, alone or in combination, slightly improved the water vapor barrier, water resistance, and thermal stability of the film. In addition, the carrageenan/agar-based composite membrane showed distinct antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The ZnSNP and PET incorporated binary composite films with enhanced physical and functional properties are likely to be used in active food packaging applications.

Copper sulfide with morphology-dependent photodynamic and photothermal antibacterial activities

Metal chalcogenides have been intensively investigated as antibacterial agents due to their unique structures and superior photoactivities. Herein, various structures of copper sulfide (CuS), a metal chalcogenide, such as microspheres (MSs), nanosheets (NSs), and nanoparticles (NPs), were developed in this work for antibacterial applications. A hydrothermal process was utilized to synthesize CuS MSs, CuS NSs, and CuS NPs. Under simulated solar light and near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, the antibacterial behaviors, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and light-driven antibacterial mechanisms of CuS MSs, CuS NSs, and CuS NPs were demonstrated with the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli). Bacterial growth curves and ROS generation tests indicated that CuS NSs and CuS NPs had higher light-driven antibacterial activities than that of CuS MSs. ROS of hydroxyl (·OH) and superoxide anion radicals (O₂^-) were investigated via an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic analysis by respectively incubating CuS MSs, CuS NSs, and CuS NPs with E. coli under simulated solar light irradiation. Furthermore, E. coli incubated with CuS NPs and CuS NSs showed substantial bacterial degradation after NIR laser irradiation, which was attributed to their photothermal killing effects. Light-driven antibacterial mechanisms of CuS NSs and CuS NPs were investigated, and we discovered that under simulated solar and NIR light irradiation, CuS NSs and CuS NPs produced photoinduced electrons, and the copper ions and photoinduced electrons then reacted with atmospheric moisture to produce hydroxide and superoxide anion radicals and heat, resulting in bacterial mortality.

Facile Sulfurization under Ambient Condition with Na2S to Fabricate Nanostructured Copper Sulfide

The sulfurization reaction was investigated as a promising fabrication method for preparing metal sulfide nanomaterials. Traditional sulfurization processes generally require high vacuum systems, high reaction temperatures, and toxic chemicals, utilizing complicated procedures with poor composition and morphology controllability. Herein, a facile method is reported for synthesizing nanostructured copper sulfide using a sulfurization reaction with Na₂S at room temperature under non-vacuum conditions. Moreover, we demonstrate that the morphology, composition, and optical properties of nanostructured copper sulfides could be controlled by the Na₂S solution concentration and the reaction time. Nanostructured copper sulfides were synthesized in nanospheres, nanoplates, and nanoplate-based complex morphologies with various oxidation states. Furthermore, by comparing the optical properties of nanostructured copper sulfides with different oxidation states, we determined that reflectivity in the near infrared (NIR) region decreases with increasing oxidation states. These results reveal that the Na₂S solution concentration and reaction time are key factors for designing nanostructured copper sulfides, providing new insights for synthesis methods of metal sulfide nanomaterials.

Preparation of pectin/agar-based functional films integrated with zinc sulfide nano petals for active packaging applications

Here we report on the robust synthesis of zinc sulfide nanoparticles (ZnSNP) using a simple one-pot reaction. The prepared ZnSNP was characterized and confirmed to be a petal-shaped nanoparticle. The ZnSNP was added to fabricate the pectin/agar-based functional composite film. The integration of ZnSNP has greatly improved the physical properties of the film, such as mechanical and UV protection properties, without significantly changing the transparency of the film. The addition of the nanofillers did not affect the film's hydrophobicity, water vapor barrier, and thermal properties. Moreover, the composite film showed intense antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogenic bacteria, E. coli and L. monocytogenes. The functional bio-nanocomposite films based on pectin/agar have high potential in active packaging applications.

Gelatin-Based Film Integrated with Copper Sulfide Nanoparticles for Active Packaging Applications

Gelatin-based multifunctional composite films were prepared by reinforcing various amounts of copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuSNP, 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wt %), and the effect of CuSNP on the film was evaluated by analyzing its physical and antibacterial properties. CuSNP makes a compatible film with gelatin. The inclusion of CuSNP significantly enhanced the UV blocking, mechanical strength, and water vapor barrier properties of the gelatin film. The inclusion of CuSNP of 1.0 wt % or less did not affect the transparency of the gelatin film. When 2.0 wt % of CuSNP was mixed, the hydrophilicity of the gelatin film did not change noticeably, but its thermal properties slightly increased. Moreover, the gelatin/CuSNP composite film presented effective antibacterial activity against E. coli and some activity against L. monocytogenes. Gelatin/CuSNP composite films with better functional and physical properties can be used for food packaging or biomedical applications.

Trace level monitoring of Cu(II) ion using CuS particles based membrane electrochemical sensor

Cu(II) monitoring is a matter of great interest to researchers due to its toxicity and adverse environmental effects. Among different methods for detecting Cu(II), ion-selective electrode (ISE) is more advantageous as they are low-cost, easy to fabricate, and highly selective. Here, we report a simple, inexpensive, and reproducible procedure for the fabrication of Cu(II) ion-selective electrodes using CuS particles and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a matrix. CuS particles, obtained by chemical precipitation, were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDX). Optimization of the membrane compositions was done to get a well-behaved sensor by varying amounts of CuS, PVC, and acetophenone (AP). A membrane composition of 0.4 g CuS, 0.5 g PVC, and 1.0 mL AP in 5.0 mL tetrahydrofuran (THF) gave a Nernstian slope of 27.31 mV per decade change of Cu(II) ion over a wide range of concentration down to 64 ppb (1 × 10⁻⁶ M). The sensor gave a fast response time of 25 s, and it indicated the endpoint in a potentiometric titration of Cu(II) with standard EDTA solution. A pH-independent potential response was obtained in the pH 4.0–6.0.

Effect of low concentrations of SiO2 nanoparticles on the physical and chemical properties of sodium alginate-based films

This work investigated the effect of adding low concentrations of nano-SiO₂ (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) in the properties of films based on sodium alginate, to identify lower thresholds in the proportion of the reinforcing agent. It was found that, even in the smallest proportion, thermal stability of the nanocomposites improved significantly (with degradation onset increased by almost 15% compared with the control film). The surface morphology showed pronounced roughness at nano-SiO₂ concentrations greater than 1.0%, indicating agglomeration of part of the nanomaterial. Mechanical properties were reduced for the samples with concentrations equal to 1.0 and 1.5%, however, without significant differences between them. Conversely, water vapor and light barrier properties have not undergone significant changes in any formulation. Therefore, the use of 0.5% nano-SiO₂ in alginate films would be an easy and economically interesting way to improve thermal stability, without significantly reducing mechanical properties of the pure material.

Enhancement of the Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Porphyran through Chemical Modification with Tyrosine Derivatives

The chemical modification of porphyran hydrocolloid is attempted, with the objective of enhancing its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Sulfated galactan porphyran is obtained from commercial samples of the red algae Porphyra dioica using Soxhlet extraction with water at 100 °C and precipitation with isopropyl alcohol. The extracted porphyran is then treated with modified L-tyrosines in aqueous medium in the presence of NaOH, at ca. 70 °C. The modified tyrosines L1 and L2 are prepared through a Mannich reaction with either thymol or 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, respectively. While the reaction with 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol yields the expected tyrosine derivative, a mixture of products is obtained with thymol. The resulting polysaccharides are structurally characterized and the respective antioxidant and antimicrobial activities are determined. Porphyran treated with the N-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butyl-benzyl)-L-tyrosine derivative, POR-L2, presents a noticeable superior radical scavenging and antioxidant activity compared to native porphyran, POR. Furthermore, it exhibited some antimicrobial activity against S. aureus. The surface morphology of films prepared by casting with native and modified porphyrans is studied by SEM/EDS. Both POR and POR-L2 present potential applicability in the production of films and washable coatings for food packaging with improved protecting characteristics.

Plasticized Starch/Agar Composite Films: Processing, Morphology, Structure, Mechanical Properties and Surface Hydrophilicity

Natural biopolymers, which are renewable, widely available, biodegradable, and biocompatible, have attracted huge interest in the development of biocomposite materials. Herein, formulation–property relationships for starch/agar composite films were investigated. First, rapid visco analysis was used to confirm the conditions needed for their gelation and to prepare filmogenic solutions. All the original crystalline and/or lamellar structures of starch and agar were destroyed, and films with cohesive and compact structures were formed, as shown by SEM, XRD, and SAXS. All the plasticized films were predominantly amorphous, and the polymorphs of the composite films were closer to that of the agar-only film. FTIR results suggest that the incorporation of agar restricted starch chain interaction and rearrangement. The addition of agar to starch increased both tensile strength and elongation at break, but the improvements were insignificant after the agar content was over 50 wt.%. Contact angle results indicate that compared with the other samples, the 4:6 (wt./wt.) starch/agar film was less hydrophilic. Thus, this work shows that agar dominates the structure and properties of starch/agar composites, and the best properties can be obtained with a certain starch/agar ratio. Such composite polysaccharide films with tailored mechanical properties and surface hydrophilicity could be useful in biodegradable packaging and biomedical applications (wound dressing and tissue scaffolding).

Tannic-Acid-Cross-Linked and TiO2-Nanoparticle-Reinforced Chitosan-Based Nanocomposite Film

A chitosan-based nanocomposite film with tannic acid (TA) as a cross-linker and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂) as a reinforcing agent was developed with a solution casting technique. TA and TiO₂ are biocompatible with chitosan, and this paper studied the synergistic effect of the cross-linker and the reinforcing agent. The addition of TA enhanced the ultraviolet blocking and mechanical properties of the chitosan-based nanocomposite film. The reinforcement of TiO₂ in chitosan/TA further improved the nanocomposite film's mechanical properties compared to the neat chitosan or chitosan/TA film. The thermal stability of the chitosan-based nanocomposite film was slightly enhanced, whereas the swelling ratio decreased. Interestingly, its water vapor barrier property was also significantly increased. The developed chitosan-based nanocomposite film showed potent antioxidant activity, and it is promising for active food packaging.

Investigation of the biological activity, mechanical properties and wound healing application of a novel scaffold based on lignin–agarose hydrogel and silk fibroin embedded zinc chromite nanoparticles

Given the important aspects of wound healing approaches, in this work, an innovative biocompatible nanobiocomposite scaffold was designed and prepared based on cross-linked lignin–agarose hydrogel, extracted silk fibroin solution, and zinc chromite (ZnCr₂O₄) nanoparticles.

Valorisation of Posidonia oceanica Sea Balls (Egagropili) as a Potential Source of Reinforcement Agents in Protein-Based Biocomposites

Nanocrystalline cellulose (NC) and a lignin-containing fraction (LF) were obtained from egagropili, the so called sea balls produced from rhizome and stem fragments of Posidonia oceanica that accumulate in large amounts along the coastal beaches in the form of tightly packed and dry materials of various dimensions. Both egagropili fractions have been shown to be able to improve the physicochemical properties of biodegradable films prepared from protein concentrates derived from hemp oilseed cakes. These materials, manufactured with a biodegradable industrial by-product and grafted with equally biodegradable waste-derived additives, exhibited an acceptable resistance with a still high flexibility, as well as they showed an effective barrier activity against water vapor and gases (O₂ and CO₂). Furthermore, both NC and LF decreased film moisture content, swelling ability and solubility, thus indicating that both additives were able to improve water resistance of the hydrocolloid films. The exploitation of egagropili, actually considered only an undesirable waste to be disposed, as a renewable source of reinforcing agents to blend with different kinds of polymers is suggested.

Fabrication of Copper Sulfide Nanoparticles and Limonene Incorporated Pullulan/Carrageenan-Based Film with Improved Mechanical and Antibacterial Properties

Edible biopolymer (pullulan/carrageenan) based functional composite films were fabricated by the addition of copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuSNP) and D-limonene (DL). The DL and CuSNP were compatible with the pullulan/carrageenan biopolymer matrix. The addition of CuSNP significantly increased the UV-blocking properties without substantially reducing the transparency of the film. The addition of CuSNP improved the film's tensile strength by 10%; however, the DL addition did not significantly influence the strength, while the combined addition of CuSNP and DL increased the strength by 15%. The addition of the fillers did not significantly affect the thermal stability of the film, but the water vapor barrier property was slightly improved. There was no significant change in the moisture content and hydrophobicity of the composite film. Besides, the composite film showed some antimicrobial activity against food-borne pathogenic bacteria. The fabricated pullulan/carrageenan-based film with antimicrobial and UV-barrier properties is likely to be used in active food packaging applications.

A novel glucomannan incorporated functionalized carbon nanotube films: Synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity

A novel nanocomposite film was developed by incorporating functionalized carbon nanotube (PCNT) and gallic acid (GA) into carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan (CKGM) and gelatin (GL) matrix. The influences of the PCNT content on the structural, morphological, mechanical, barrier, thermal and antimicrobial properties of CKGM/GL nanocomposite film were discussed. The structure of PCNT@CKGM/GL nanocomposite film was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, and AFM. The crystal structure and thermal ability of the film were generated by XRD and TGA-DTG. The analyses of FT-IR revealed that the amide linkage and strong hydrogen bonding were formed between CKGM, GL, and PCNT. Moreover, the characterization of mechanical properties, moisture barrier, and antimicrobial activities indicated the benefits of adding PCNT into CKGM/GL films. The results suggested that the PCNT@CKGM/GL films exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Therefore, such antimicrobial nanocomposite films have the potential of maintaining the quality and prolong the shelf life of food products.

Curcumin Incorporated Poly(Butylene Adipate-co-Terephthalate) Film with Improved Water Vapor Barrier and Antioxidant Properties

Curcumin incorporated poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) based film was fabricated. Curcumin has uniformly distributed in the PBAT matrix to form a bright yellow PBAT/curcumin film. The PBAT/curcumin film has slightly reduced tensile strength and flexibility than the neat PBAT film, while the thermal stability of the film has not changed significantly. The blending of curcumin significantly decreased the water vapor permeability of the PBAT film. Additionally, the PBAT/curcumin film showed potent antioxidant activity with some antimicrobial activity. The PBAT/curcumin films with improved water vapor barrier and additional functions can be used for active packaging applications.

Anthocyanin food colorant and its application in pH-responsive color change indicator films

Recently, interest in smart packaging, which can show the color change of the packaging film according to the state of the food and evaluate the quality or freshness of the packaged food in real-time, is increasing. As a color indicator, a natural colorant, anthocyanin, drew a lot of attention due to their various colors as well as useful functions properties such as antioxidant activity and anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory effects, prevention of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. In particular, the pH-responsive color-changing function of anthocyanins is useful for making color indicator smart packaging films. This review addressed the latest information on the use of natural pigment anthocyanins for intelligent and active food packaging applications. Recent studies on eco-friendly biodegradable polymer-based color indicator films incorporated with anthocyanins have been addressed. Also, studies on the use of smart packaging films to monitor the freshness of foods such as milk, meat, and fish were reviewed. This review highlights the potential and challenges for the use of anthocyanins as pH-responsive color-changing films for intelligent food packaging applications, which may be beneficial for further development of smart color indicator films for practical use.
