Abstract
Pullulan is naturally occurring polysaccharide exhibited potential applications for food preservation has gained increasing attention over the last half-century. Recent studies focused on efficient preservation and targeted inhibition using active composite ingredients and advanced technologies. This has led to the emergence of pullulan-based biofilm preservation. This review extensively studied the characteristics of pullulan-based films and coatings, including their mechanical strength, water vapor permeability, thermal stability, and potential as a microbial agent. Furthermore, the distinct characteristics of pullulan, production methods, and activation strategies, such as pullulan derivatization, various compounded ingredients (plant extracts, microorganisms, and animal additives), and other technologies (e.g., ultrasound), are thoroughly studied for the functional property enhancement of pullulan-based films and coatings, ensuring optimal preservation conditions for diverse food products. Additionally, we explore hypotheses that further illuminate pullulan's potential as an eco-friendly bioactive material for food packaging applications. In addition, this review evaluates various methods to improve the efficiency of the film-forming mechanism, such as improving the direct coating process, bioactive packaging films, and implementing layer-by-layer coatings. Finally, current analyses put forward suggestions for future advancement in pullulan-based bioactive films, with the aim of expanding their range of potential applications.

Abstract
Electrospun films (ESF) are gaining attention for active delivery due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. This study investigated the impact of adding soy protein amyloid fibrils (SAFs) to ESF. Functional ESF based on SAFs/pullulan were successfully fabricated, with SAFs clearly observed entangled in the electrospun fibers using fluorescence microscopy. The addition of SAFs improved the mechanical strength of the ESF threefold and increased its surface hydrophobicity from 24.8° to 49.9°. Moreover, the ESF demonstrated antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In simulated oral disintegration tests, almost 100% of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) dissolved within 4 min from the ESF. In summary, the incorporation of SAFs into ESF improved their mechanical strength, hydrophobicity, and enabled them to exhibit antibacterial properties, making them promising candidates for active delivery applications in food systems. Additionally, the ESF showed efficient release of EGCG, indicating their potential for controlled release of bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Curcumin (CUR; 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02 %) was loaded into binary 75/25 blend films based on polysaccharides (carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), gum Arabic (GAR), octenyl succinic anhydride modified starch (OSA), water-soluble soy polysaccharides (WSSP)) and gelatin (GEL). The GAR-based system was the least rough and, consequently, the most transparent of the films. An opposite result was found for the WSSP-based film. Despite the phase separation, the CMC75/GEL25 film exhibited excellent mechanical strength and stiffness. CUR improved the UV/VIS light-barrier characteristics of the films, but did not affect most of other physiochemical properties. X-ray diffractograms revealed that CUR provoked the rearrangement of the triple helical structure of GEL. As highly erodible, the CMC75/GEL25 carrier ensured the fastest and the most complete release of CUR. The OSA75/GEL25 system exhibited an opposite behavior. The kinetic profiles of the antiradical activity of the films did not reflect CUR release. A comparison of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH*) scavenging on the plateau revealed that the CUR-supplemented films had quite comparable antiradical potential. The CMC75/GEL25 system exhibited the highest colorimetric stability, likely as a result of complete encapsulation of CUR in the GEL-rich microspheres. Weak symptoms of physical aging (enthalpy relaxation) were found in the films.

Abstract
Odor pollution caused by brownfield site has attracted increasing attention. However, to date, fewer suitable materials can be used to control the emission of odor pollutant from brownfield site during remediation. This study prepared a kind of combined hydrogel solution based on sodium alginate and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CHS-SC) and tested the possibility of its membrane in controlling the emission of three odor pollutants (trichloroethylene, dimethyl disulfide, and p-xylene) from polluted soil. Our results showed that CHS-SC membrane could effectively control the emission of three odor pollutants from polluted soil. Comparatively, CHS-SC membrane had higher control rates for three odor pollutants at high ambient temperature (32 °C), short storage time of CHS-SC (5 days, 25 °C), and low odor pollutant concentration (2 ml/kg soil) than at low ambient temperature (2 °C), long storage time of CHS-SC (10 d, 25 °C), and high odor pollutant concentration (4 ml/kg soil), respectively. CHS-SC membrane was degraded by 79.23% after 150 days in soil and slightly changed soil bacterial community, indicating that it had good biodegradability and environmental friendliness. In addition, CHS-SC cost was the lowest among the products with similar function. This study shows that CHS-SC is effective in short-timely controlling the emission of odor pollutants from brownfield site.

Abstract
Starch is widely used to prepare biodegradable films due to its superior biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, and renewability. In this work, a novel K+/carrageenan porous-starch/casein gel film with high oil absorption was prepared using modified porous starch. Optimal gel stability and uniformity were obtained when adding 10 mg/mL k-carrageenan and 2 mg/mL K+ to 2 mg/mL microgels, with significantly reduced crystallinity and elasticity and increased tensile strength. The concentration of k-carrageenan was the main factor affecting gel strength and the hydrophilic and mechanical properties of the film. In addition, the film-forming solution showed excellent fluidity and spreading typical of non-Newtonian fluids. The film also exhibited a highly porous structure, as visualized by SEM and AFM, in line with a cumulative oil absorption rate of 87.5 % within 20 min, which was significantly higher than that obtained with glutinous rice starch. In conclusion, reinforcement of starch-based microgels as described in this study can maximize the film's adsorption performance and mechanical properties, with promising applications in skin care and beauty products.

A Comprehensive Study on Gelatin- and Whey Protein Isolate-Based Edible Films as Carriers of Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium L.) Extract. FOOD BIOPROCESS TECH 2022. Abstract
AbstractGelatin (GEL) and whey protein isolate (WPI) are often taken into account as carriers of phytoantioxidants for developing active packaging. The materials obtained, however, have not yet been systematically compared to demonstrate their potential benefits and drawbacks. Fireweed extract (FE) is a rich source of polyphenols with high antioxidant activity. Therefore, in this study, the structural, physicochemical, and antiradical properties of GEL and WPI films incorporated with freeze-dried fireweed extract (FE; 0, 0.0125, 0.025, 0.05%) were simultaneously evaluated. As verified by X-ray diffraction, the GEL-based films were more crystalline and, consequently, mechanically stronger (~ 9–11 vs. ~ 6 MPa) and less permeable to water vapor than the WPI films (44.95–52.02 vs. 61.47–70.49 g mm m−2 day−1 kPa−1). Furthermore, GEL offered a bit more transparent, less yellow, and more stretchable films (~ 50–59% vs. ~ 26%). In turn, the WPI films had superior UV-protective potential. The higher FE concentration yielded more yellow films with improved UV-blocking ability. The FE (0.05%) made the GEL cryogel denser. Based on the half-time reduction of 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation (tABTS50%), the 0.025, and 0.05% FE-supplemented WPI films exhibited ~ 1.6 and ~ 1.9 times better antiradical potential than the GEL counterparts. This result implies that the WPI-based films, being more soluble (35.12–36.74 vs. 31.51–33.21%) and less swellable (192.61–205.88 vs. 1056.93–2282.47%), ensured faster release of FE into aqueous medium. The slower building up of the antiradical activity of the FE-supplemented GEL films suggests that GEL could be more useful in the development of slow/less migratory active packaging systems for high moisture food.

Abstract
Edible antimicrobial films made from starch/gelatin (S/G) incorporated with different ε-polylysine hydrochloride (ε-PL) contents were developed by low-temperature extrusion blowing process. ε-PL addition reduced the complex viscosity and storage modulus of blends, while promoted the formation of hydrogen bonding among film components. The control film had an A-type crystalline structure, while increasing the ε-PL content promoted its transformation to B-shaped structure. Without ε-PL and under the processing temperature used, the starch granules were not sufficiently gelatinized. However, ε-PL addition significantly enhanced the gelatinization degree. Increasing ε-PL content in S/G films increased film flexibility, water contact angle value, swelling degree, antimicrobial effect, and storage period of fresh bread, but decreased water vapor permeability and tensile strength. S/G film with 4 wt% ε-PL had the highest water contact angle (94°) and elongation at break (149%). This research demonstrates the plasticizing effects of ε-PL and potential of S/G films containing ε-PL for food preservation/packaging.

Abstract
The properties of edible films derived from corn starch (CS) and methylcellulose (MC) supplemented with fireweed extract (FE; 0.0125-0.05% w/w) were analyzed. Due to their more crystalline structure, the MC films were significantly stronger (~26 MPa) than the CS films (~4 MPa). In turn, CS produced films with lower water vapor permeability (WVP, 50.12-51.74 vs. 56.52-59.10 g mm m-2 d-1 kPa-1). The hydrothermally-disrupted starch granules contributed to high roughness and opacity of the CS films. The FE-supplemented films exhibited an intensive yellow color and improved the UV-absorbing effect. FE delayed starch retrogradation, as indicated by the reduced crystallinity and slightly improved transparency of the CS films. Incorporation of FE significantly enhanced the released radical scavenging activity (RSA) of the films, while did not affect the WVP and mechanical properties. Due to better FE-trapping capacity, the CS-based films exhibited lower antioxidant activity (RSA60min = 2.21-19.75%) as compared to the MC counterparts (RSA60min = 4.87-38.31%).

Abstract
Water-soluble AstaSana astaxanthin (AST) was loaded into 75/25 blend films made of polysaccharides (carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), gum Arabic (GAR), starch sodium octenyl succinate (OSA), water-soluble soy polysaccharides (WSSP)) and gelatin (GEL) at levels of 0.25, 0.5, and 1%, respectively. Due to the presence of starch granules in the AST formulation, the supplemented films exhibited increased surface roughness as compared to the AST-free films. Apart from the CMC/GEL carrier, the migration of AST to water (25 °C, 32 h) was incomplete. Excluding the CMC-based carrier, the gradual rise in the AST concentration decreased the release rate. The Hopfenberg with time lag model provided the best fit for all release series data. Based on the quarter-release times (t25%), the 0.25% AST-supplemented OSA/GEL film (t25% = 13.34 h) ensured a 1.9, 2.2, and 148.2 slower release compared to the GAR-, WSSP- and CMC-based carriers, respectively. According to the Korsmeyer–Peppas model, the CMC-based films offered a quasi-Fickian release of AST (n < 0.5) with the burst effect (t100% = 0.5–1 h). In general, the release of AST from the other films was multi-mechanistic (n > 0.5), i.e., controlled at least by Fickian diffusion and the polymer relaxation (erosion) mechanism. The 1% AST-added WSSP/GEL system provided the most linear release profile.

Abstract
Nanoencapsulation of saffron extract (SE) components into the rapeseed lecithin nanoliposomes were performed by sonication of their aqueous dispersions as a green process. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) results exhibited that empty and SE loaded nanoliposomes (SENL) had average sizes in range of 118-138 nm, negative zeta potentials (-32.0 to -46.8 mV) and polydispersity index (PDI) less than 0.3 during storage for 28 days at 4 °C. Encapsulation efficiency of crocin was approximately 30%. The 70% of crocin released from SENLs within 5 h in PBS solution. Pullulan-based films were fabricated by incorporation of empty and SE loaded nanoliposomes into pullulan solution through casting method. The mechanical resistance and thermal stability of the films reduced by addition of nanoliposomes. FTIR and thermal characterizations indicated that SE was successfully encapsulated in the nanoliposomes and film matrix with high thermal stability. Incorporation of nanoliposomes enhanced the oxygen barrier properties of the films, while it didn't significantly affect the water vapor permeability (WVP) of the films. The obtained edible films or coatings can provide additional benefits due to unique flavor and color of saffron. In addition, the utilization of SE, can provide benefits for health-allegation from SE antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Edible and active packaging are attractive for use in food packaging applications due to their functionality and sustainability. This research developed new antioxidant active food packaging materials from cassava starch/gelatin (7:3 w/w) composite films with varied antioxidant types (quercetin and tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ)) and concentrations (0–200 mg/200 mL film-forming solution) and evaluated their properties. Antioxidant addition altered the mechanical and barrier properties of the films. At 34% relative humidity (RH), increasing the concentration of quercetin increased the tensile strength and decreased the elongation at break of the composite films. Increasing quercetin and TBHQ contents increased the film water solubility and water vapor transmission rate. Intermolecular interactions between the antioxidants and films, as found in Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and XRD micrographs, were related to the changed film functionalities. In food application studies, the cassava starch/gelatin films containing quercetin and TBHQ retarded the oxidation of lard (more than 35 days) and delayed the redness discoloration of pork. Cassava starch/gelatin composite films integrated with quercetin and TBHQ can be utilized as active packaging that delays oxidation in foods.
