Abstract
The study isolated two strains of intestinal autochthonous bacteria Lactiplantibacillus plantarum1 (MH155966.1) (L1) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum2 (MH105076.1) (L2) from the Choobdeh Abadan region. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different strains of probiotic bacteria on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, histopathologic and histomorphometric characterization of the intestine, expression of immune and growth related genes, and evaluate Lates calcarifer resistance against Vibrio alginolyticus. To achieve this, for each treatment 60 L. calcarifer juveniles (75 ± 12 g) were randomly distributed in three fiberglass tanks (300 L) and fed for 45 days. The treatments were established as Diet 1 (control diet); L1 (diet with Lb. plantarum isolated 1); L2 (diet with Lb. plantarum isolated 2) with a bacterial concentration of 1 × 109 CFU/g. Nine fish from each treatment were sampled and examined, after euthanasia. The fish were placed 2 cm from the beginning of the intestine for microscopic sampling of villi height, villi width and thickness of the epithelium, with 3 treatments: The result showed differences in the mean values of total weight were found at the end of the experiment. After 45 days of culture, the fish fed with L1 had higher (P < 0.05) growth performance than the other treatment groups. But at the end of the trial, in L2, the digestive enzyme activities were higher (P < 0.05) than the other treatment groups. The fishes fed diets supplemented with the L2 group, like the digestive enzyme activities test, presented an increase in the thickness of the epithelium of the intestine, and villus height, and villus width were greatest in L2. Fish feeding with L1 and L2 probiotics induced higher transcription levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10), granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming cells (GMCFC), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-β) genes in the gut, which may correlate with better immune and hematological parameters in these groups. The results of the challenge test revealed that the percentage of survival was significantly higher in L1 (76.2%) and L2 (80.95%) treatments than in the control (P < 0.05). These results indicate that host-derived probiotics (Lb. plantarum) have significant potential as important probiotics to enhance nutrient utilization, Digestive enzymes, and metabolism by increasing the gut surface area of Lates calcarifer juveniles at 45 days of culture.

Abstract
With the emergence of diseases, the U.S. catfish industry is under challenge. Current trends prefer autochthonous bacteria as potential probiotic candidates owing to their adaptability and capacity to effectively colonize the host's intestine, which can enhance production performance and bolster disease resistance. The objective of this study was to isolate an autochthonous bacterium as probiotic for hybrid catfish. Initially, an analysis of the intestinal microbiota of hybrid catfish reared in earthen ponds was conducted for subsequent probiotic development. Twenty lactic acid bacteria were isolated from the digesta of overperforming catfish, and most of the candidates demonstrated probiotic traits, including proteolytic and lipolytic abilities; antagonistic inhibition of catfish enteric bacterial pathogens, negative haemolytic activity and antibiotic susceptibility. Subsequent to this screening process, an isolate of Lactococcus lactis (MA5) was deemed the most promising probiotic candidate. In silico analyses were conducted, and several potential probiotic functions were predicted, including essential amino acids and vitamin synthesis. Moreover, genes for three bacteriocins, lactococcin A, enterolysin A and sactipeptide BmbF, were identified. Lastly, various protectant media for lyophilization of MA5 were assessed. These findings suggest that Lactococcus lactis MA5 can be an autochthonous probiotic from hybrid catfish, holding promise to be further tested in feeding trials.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of a feed additive (FA) containing a probiotic consortium, fructooligosaccharide and yeast extract on growth performance, humoral immune responses, hepatic antioxidant parameters and intestine digestive enzymes, morphology and transcripts in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. The fish were reared for 8 weeks, feeding on diets containing 0 (CNT), 0.3 (0.3FA), 1 (1FA) and 2 (2FA) g/kg FA. The results showed that fish growth parameters were significantly and quadratically related to FA levels and FA treatments had better growth performance than CNT treatment. Intestinal amylase activity significantly increased in 2FA, whereas, intestinal protease activity increased in all FA treatments. Intestinal villus length and muscular layer thickness significantly increased in 0.3FA treatment. Blood leucocyte and lymphocyte counts, plasma lysozyme activity and hepatic glutathione content significantly increased in 0.3FA and 1FA treatments; whereas hepatic malondialdehyde significantly decreased in these treatments. Blood neutrophil and monocyte counts significantly increased in 0.3FA treatment, while plasma alternative complement activity significantly increased in 1FA treatments. Plasma bactericidal activities against Aeromonas hydrophila, Yersinia ruckeri and Streptococcus iniae, and intestinal expression of heat shock protein 70 and beta-defensin significantly increased in all FA treatments. The abundance of A. hydrophila, Y. ruckeri and S. iniae in fish gut significantly decreased in 0.3FA treatment; these bacteria were absent in the intestines of 1FA and 2FA treatments. The present results suggest that dietary 0.3-1 g/kg of FA can significantly improve growth performance, immune response, intestinal health and hepatic antioxidant capacity in rainbow trout.

Abstract
Aquaculturists use polyploid fish to maximize production albeit with some unintended consequences including compromised behaviors and physiological function. Given benefits of probiotic therapies (e.g., improved immune response, growth, and metabolism), we explored probiotic supplementation (mixture of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Lactococcus), to overcome drawbacks. We first examined fish gut bacterial community composition using 16S metabarcoding (via principal coordinate analyses and PERMANOVA) and determined probiotics significantly impacted gut bacteria composition (p = 0.001). Secondly, we examined how a genomic disruptor (triploidy) and diet supplements (probiotics) impact gene transcription and behavioral profiles of hatchery-reared Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). Juveniles from four treatment groups (diploid-regular feed, diploid-probiotic feed, triploid-regular feed, and triploid-probiotic feed; n = 360) underwent behavioral assays to test activity, exploration, neophobia, predator evasion, aggression/sociality, behavioral sensitivity, and flexibility. In these fish, transcriptional profiles for genes associated with neural functions (neurogenesis/synaptic plasticity) and biomarkers for stress response and development (growth/appetite) were (i) examined across treatments and (ii) used to describe behavioral phenotypes via principal component analyses and general linear mixed models. Triploids exhibited a more active behavioral profile (p = 0.002), and those on a regular diet had greater Neuropeptide Y transcription (p = 0.02). A growth gene (early growth response protein 1, p = 0.02) and long-term neural development genes (neurogenic differentiation factor, p = 0.003 and synaptysomal-associated protein 25-a, p = 0.005) impacted activity and reactionary profiles, respectively. Overall, our probiotic treatment did not compensate for triploidy. Our research highlights novel applications of behavioral transcriptomics for identifying candidate genes and dynamic, mechanistic associations with complex behavioral repertoires.

Abstract
Aeromonas hydrophila, an aquatic pathogenic bacterium, has been found to infect many fish species and cause huge aquaculture losses. Antibiotics are the most common drugs used to treat these infections. However, antibiotic abuse can lead to the development of antibiotic resistance. Probiotics have the potential to replace antibiotics for preventing infections. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a model organism used to study the innate immune system and host-pathogen interactions. Currently, there is little information on how the fish immune system responds to A. hydrophila and probiotic treatment. To increase the understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind the zebrafish defense against A. hydrophila and provide evidence that antibiotics can be replaced by probiotics, a transcriptome analysis of the zebrafish spleen was conducted 48 hours after infection by A. hydrophila, as well as after treatment using Lactococcus lactis KUST48 4 hours after infection. A total of 36,499 genes were obtained. There were 3,337 genes found to have significant differential expression between treatment and control groups. According to further annotation and enrichment analysis, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were involved in signal transduction, endocrine system cancer, and the immune system. Insulin resistance disappeared in the zebrafish after treatment. Quantitative real-time PCR was performed to confirm the significant regulation of immune defense DEGs, the results of which were consistent with the RNA-sequencing data. These results could serve as a basis for future studies on the immune response to A. hydrophila and provide suggestions for probiotic alternatives to antibiotics, which will be of great significance to aquaculture and environmental protection.IMPORTANCEIn recent years, the unreasonable use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria, antibiotic residues, cross infection, toxic side effects, and so on, which has caused a serious threat to human food safety and life health. In recent years, many studies have demonstrated the potential of probiotics as a substitute for antibiotics, but there is still a lack of understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying probiotic therapy. We conduct a research on the impact of Lactococcus lactis KUST48 on the transcription profile of Aeromonas hydrophila-infected zebrafish spleen. Mortality of zebrafish infected with A. hydrophila was significantly reduced after treatment with L. lactis KUST48. Our results can help to strengthen our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of zebrafish and provide a valuable reference for the molecular mechanisms of probiotic therapy.

Abstract
A 16-week feeding trial was done to examine the impacts of continuous feeding (CF) or pulse-feeding (PF) of multi-strain probiotics on Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer, 30.0 ± 0.1 g) juveniles. In this study, three different multi-strain probiotic mixtures were added to a basal diet, including (I) a mixture of different strains of Lactobacillus plantarum, (II) a mixture of the first probiotic (I) + L. delbrueckii sub bulgaricus, L. rhamnosus and L. acidophilus, and (III) a mixture of the second probiotic (II) + two quorum quenching (QQ) bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis QQ1 and B. cereus QQ2). CF (every day) or PF (every two weeks) strategies were applied for using the abovementioned probiotics to design seven experimental groups including C (control, without probiotics), CF-I (continuous feeding of fish with the probiotic mixture I), CF-II (continuous feeding of fish with the probiotic mixture II), CF-III (continuous feeding of fish with the probiotic mixture III), PF-I (pulse-feeding of fish with the probiotic mixture I), PF-II (pulse-feeding of fish with the probiotic mixture II), and PF-III (pulse-feeding of fish with the probiotic mixture III). Four hundred and twenty fish were stocked into 21 circular polyethylene tanks with 220 L volume (20 fish/tank). Each dietary treatment had three replicates. Tanks were supplied with seawater (temperature = 30.5 °C, salinity = 45 g L-1) in a flow-throw system. Fish in CF-I, CF-II, and CF-III had higher growth rate (ca. 113-145%) and better feed conversion ratio than fish fed C and PF-I (P < 0.05). Fish in the CF-III group had the highest protease activity. Continuous feeding strategy resulted in a higher amount of glutathione and catalase activities in both the liver and plasma as well as higher superoxide dismutase activity in the liver of fish. Pulse-feeding strategy resulted in lower plasma lactate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase levels than the CF strategy. Regardless of feeding strategy, different probiotic mixtures significantly enhanced blood hemoglobin and hematocrit levels compared to the control. Continuous feeding with the multi-strain probiotics resulted in a higher survival rate against Vibrio harveyi than the PF method. Continuous feeding induced higher mRNA transcription levels of granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming cells and interleukin 10 genes in the gut of fish than PF strategy. In conclusion, continuous feeding with multi-strain probiotics is better than pulse-feeding on growth, feed utilization, antioxidant capacity, and the gut's immune-related genes and led to higher resistance of L. calcarifer in challenge with V. harveyi.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of combined and singular oral administration of Bio-Aqua® with different dosages of sodium diformate (NaDF) on biochemical indices, innate immune responses, antioxidant effects, and expressions of immunological related genes of Caspian brown trout (Salmo trutta caspius). Fingerlings Salmo trutta caspius (n = 1800; initial weight 15 ± 3 g) were randomly allocated into five groups (120 fish group-1 in triplicates). Control diet: without any addition, G1, G2, G3, and G4 received diets containing 0.2 g kg-1 commercial probiotic Bio-Aqua® combined with 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% NaDF to the basal diet for 60 days according to recommended dosages reported in previous studies. Results indicated that serum bactericidal activity (G3 on day 60 and G1 on day 30) and classic complement in all groups (on day 60) (G1 and G2 on day 30) were significantly elevated (P < 0.05). The serum lysozyme, glucose, globulin, and albumin levels showed no significant differences between all groups compared to the control group (P > 0.05). On days 30 and 60 of the sampling, no significant difference was observed in the amount of superoxide disotase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) between the treatments (P > 0.05) but activity of malondialdehyde (MDA) was lower in G1 than the control (P < 0.05). The expression of the immune-regulating genes IL-10, IL-1β, GTP, FATP, and IGF was significantly improved in all probiotic + acidifier-treated groups (P < 0.05). The current findings showed that mixture of Bio-Aqua® and NaDF (1.5% + pro) is beneficial, as it effectively improves some immune parameters and expression of immunological and growth-related genes in Caspian brown trout.

Abstract
The effects of dietary supplementation of Clostridium butyricum (CB) on growth performance, serum biochemistry, antioxidant activity, mRNA levels of immune-related genes and resistance to hypoxia stress were studied in largemouth bass. Feed with CB0 (control, 0 CFU/kg), CB1 (4.3×108 CFU/kg), CB2 (7.5×108 CFU/kg), CB3 (1.5×109 CFU/kg) and CB4 (3.2×109 CFU/kg) CB for 56 days, and then a 3 h hypoxic stress experiment was performed. The results showed that dietary CB significantly increased the WGR (weight gain rate), SGR (specific growth rate), PDR (protein deposition rate) and ISI (Intestosomatic index) of largemouth bass (P<0.05). Hepatic GH (growth hormone)/IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1) gene expression was significantly upregulated in the CB3 and CB4 groups compared with the CB0 group (P<0.05), while the FC (feed conversion) was significantly decreased (P<0.05). Serum TP (total protein) and GLU (glucose) levels were significantly higher in the CB4 group than in the CB0 group (P<0.05), while the contents of serum AST (aspartate transaminase), ALT (alanine transaminase), AKP (alkline phosphatase) and UN (urea nitrogen) in CB4 were significantly lower than those in CB0 (P<0.05). T-AOC (total antioxidant capacity), SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase), POD (peroxidase) and GSH-Px (glutathione peroxidase) activities were significantly higher in CB3 and CB4 groups than in CB0 group (P<0. 05). The liver MDA (malondialdehyde) content of CB1, CB2, CB3 and CB4 groups was significantly higher than that of CB0 group (P<0. 05). The relative expressions of IL-1β (interleukin 1β), TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor α) and TLR22 (toll-like receptor-22) genes in CB2, CB3 and CB4 groups were significantly lower than those in CB0 group (P<0.05). The relative expression of IL-8 (malondialdehyde) and MyD88 (Myeloid differentiation factor 88) genes in the CB4 group was significantly lower than that in the CB0 group (P<0.05). The liver LZM (lysozyme) content of CB2, CB3 and CB4 groups was significantly higher than that of CB0 group (P<0. 05). The relative expression of IL-10 (interleukin 10) and TGF-β (transforming growth factor β) genes in the CB4 group was significantly higher than that in the CB0 group (P<0.05). Under hypoxic stress for 3 h, the CMR of CB0 group was significantly higher than that of CB1, CB2, CB3 and CB4 groups (P<0.05). Dietary CB can improve the growth performance and resistance to hypoxic stress of largemouth bass by regulating the expression of GH/IGF-1 gene and inflammatory factors and inhibiting TLR22/MyD88 signaling pathway.

Abstract
Aquaculture is one of the most significant food sources from the prehistoric period. As aquaculture intensifies globally, the prevalence and outbreaks of various pathogenic microorganisms cause fish disease and heavy mortality, leading to a drastic reduction in yield and substantial economic loss. With the modernization of the aquaculture system, a new challenge regarding biofilms or bacterial microenvironments arises worldwide, which facilitates pathogenic microorganisms to survive under unfavorable environmental conditions and withstand various treatments, especially antibiotics and other chemical disinfectants. However, we focus on the mechanistic association between those microbes which mainly form biofilm and probiotics in one of the major food production systems, aquaculture. In recent years, probiotics and their derivatives have attracted much attention in the fisheries sector to combat the survival strategy of pathogenic bacteria. Apart from this, Bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the published literature, highlighting key research themes, emerging topics, and areas that require further investigation. This information is valuable for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders in determining research priorities and allocating resources effectively.

Abstract
In this study, we evaluated the effects of fermented soybean meal (FSBM) or/and unfermented SBM replacing a portion of fish meal (FM) on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immunity, and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway of juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). Four groups of juvenile coho salmon (initial weight 152.23 ± 3.21 g) in triplicate were fed for 12 weeks on four different iso-nitrogen and iso-lipid experimental diets: G0 diet (28% FM protein, control group), G1 diet (18% FM protein and 10% SBM protein), G2 diet (18% FM protein, 5% SBM protein, and 5% FSBM protein), and G3 diet (18% FM protein and 10% FSBM protein). The main results were compared with the G0 diet; the weight gain rate, specific growth rate, and condition factor of juveniles in G3 were increased significantly (p < 0.05). The content of muscle crude protein, the total protein, glucose, albumin, total cholesterol in serum, and the total antioxidant capacity in the liver of juveniles in G3 was increased significantly (p < 0.05). The activities of pepsin, trypsin, α-amylase, and lipase in the intestine, the superoxide dismutase, catalase, and alkaline phosphatase in the liver of juveniles in G3 were increased significantly (p < 0.05). The expression levels of phosphatidylinositide 3-kinases, serine/threonine kinase, mTOR, and ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 genes in the liver of juveniles in G3 were upregulated significantly (p < 0.05). The feed coefficient ratio, viscerosomatic index, the contents of muscle moisture, and malondialdehyde in the liver of juveniles in G3 were decreased significantly (p < 0.05). The expression levels of tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin 1β, and interleukin 6 genes in the liver of juveniles in G3 were downregulated significantly (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant effect (p > 0.05) on the survival rate, food intake, and muscle crude lipid and ash of juveniles among the experimental groups. In conclusion, FSBM to replace a portion FM had a positive effect on the growth performance, protein deposition, antioxidant enzyme activity, digestive enzyme activity, protein synthesis, and immune-related genes of juvenile coho salmon.

Abstract
In this study, three highly pathogenic bacterial strains (Vibrio harveyi TB6, Vibrio alginolyticus TN1, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus TN3) were isolated from skin ulcers and intestines of diseased Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis). The bacteria were investigated using hemolytic activity tests, in vitro co-culture with intestinal epithelial cells, and artificial infection of C. semilaevis. A further 126 strains were isolated from the intestines of healthy C. semilaevis. The three pathogens were used as indicator bacteria, and the antagonistic strains were identified from the 126 strains. The activities of exocrine digestive enzymes in the strains were also tested. Four strains with antibacterial and digestive enzyme activities were obtained and the best strains, Bacillus subtilis Y2 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Y9, were selected according to their ability to protect epithelial cells from infection. In addition, the effects of strains Y2 and Y9 at the individual level were investigated, finding that the activities of the immune-related enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, acid phosphatase, and peroxidase were significantly increased in the sera of the treatment group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). The specific growth rate (SGR, %) was also increased, especially in the Y2 group, and was significantly higher compared with the controls (p < 0.05). The result of the artificial infection test showed that the cumulative mortality within 72 h in the Y2 group was the lowest (50.5%), and in the Y9 group (68.5%) it was significantly lower than that in the control group (100%) (p < 0.05). Analysis of the intestinal microbial communities indicated that Y2 and Y9 could alter the composition of the intestinal flora, increasing both species richness and evenness, and inhibiting the growth of Vibrio in the intestine. These results suggested food supplemented with Y2 and Y9 could improve both immune function and disease resistance, as well as have a positive effect on the growth performance and the intestinal morphology of C. semilaevis.

Abstract
The present study was performed to isolate and identify antimicrobial bacteria from the skin mucus of Labeo calbasu and assess their effects as water additives alone and in synergism, with dietary probiotic bacteria Aneurinibacillus aneurinilyticus LC1 isolated from intestinal tracts of L. calbasu on physiology and survival of same fish. Eight treatments (T1-T8) were conducted in triplicate, containing 10 fishes (2.02 ± 0.01 g) in each treatment: T1, control group (diet without probiotics); T2-T4, a diet with water additive probiotics; Bacillus cereus LC1, B. albus LC7, and B. cereus LC10, respectively, at 1000 CFU ml-1; T5, a diet with dietary probiotic A. aneurinilyticus at 3000 CFU g-1, T6-T8, a diet with water additives Bacillus cereus LC1, B. albus LC7, and B. cereus LC10 at 1000 CFU ml-1 along with dietary probiotic A. aneurinilyticus at 3000 CFU g-1. Results revealed improved growth, nutritive physiology, immune response, water quality, and survival in fish of group T8 (fingerlings fed on a probiotic diet at 3000 CFU g-1 and reared in holding water treated with skin mucus bacteria B. cereus LC10 at 1000 CFU g-1) as compared to other treatments, suggesting autochthonous intestinal and cutaneous mucosal bacteria as robust candidates for their collective application in aquaculture.

Abstract
Given the potential of microalgae as new aquafeed ingredients, this study focuses on using a blend of microalgae, Tisochrysis lutea, Nannochloropsis gaditana, and Scenedesmus almeriensis, as a dietary ingredient for feeding Sparus aurata juveniles. The growth performance, carcass composition, tissue fatty acid profile, and intestinal microbiota were evaluated after a 30 day-feeding period. A microalgae-free diet was used as control, and three experimental diets were formulated containing 5%, 15%, and 25% of the microalgae blend (MB-5%, MB-15%, and MB-25%, respectively). After 7, 15, and 30 days of feeding experimental diets, biological samples were taken. Growth performance and nutrient utilization were not significantly modified at the end of the experiment. Microalgae inclusion tended to decrease body lipids and affected the fatty acid profile, especially MB-25 diet increased DHA levels. Diet MB-25 promoted appropriate microbial diversity, favoring the presence of probiotic bacteria, such as Lactobacillus, and significantly influencing the fatty acid composition and lipid metabolism in fish. In conclusion, using a short pulse of dietary administration of 25% microalgal blend in S. aurata modulates the intestinal microbiota and lipid composition while maintaining growth performance.

Abstract
In addition to their use in human medicine, antimicrobials are also used in food animals and aquaculture, and their use can be categorized as therapeutic against bacterial infections. The use of antimicrobials in aquaculture may involve a broad environmental application that affects a wide variety of bacteria, promoting the spread of bacterial resistance genes. Probiotics and bacteriocins, antimicrobial peptides produced by some types of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), have been successfully tested in aquatic animals as alternatives to control bacterial infections. Supplementation might have beneficial impacts on the intestinal microbiota, immune response, development, and/or weight gain, without the issues associated with antibiotic use. Thus, probiotics and bacteriocins represent feasible alternatives to antibiotics. Here, we provide an update with respect to the relevance of aquaculture in the animal protein production sector, as well as the present and future challenges generated by outbreaks and antimicrobial resistance, while highlighting the potential role of probiotics and bacteriocins to address these challenges. In addition, we conducted data analysis using a simple linear regression model to determine whether a linear relationship exists between probiotic dose added to feed and three variables of interest selected, including specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, and lysozyme activity.

Abstract
The Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, common carp Cyprinus carpio, grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella and rohu carp Labeo rohita are farmed commercially worldwide. Production of these important finfishes is rapidly expanding, and intensive culture practices can lead to stress in fish, often reducing resistance to infectious diseases. Antibiotics and other drugs are routinely used for the treatment of diseases and sometimes applied preventatively to combat microbial pathogens. This strategy is responsible for the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance, mass killing of environmental/beneficial bacteria, and residual effects in humans. As an alternative, the administration of probiotics has gained acceptance for disease control in aquaculture. Probiotics have been found to improve growth, feed utilization, immunological status, disease resistance, and to promote transcriptomic profiles and internal microbial balance of host organisms. The present review discusses the effects of single and multi-strain probiotics on growth, immunity, heamato-biochemical parameters, and disease resistance of the above-mentioned finfishes. The application and outcome of probiotics in the field or open pond system, gaps in existing knowledge, and issues worthy of further research are also highlighted.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Cetobacterium somerae XMX-1 fermentation product on gut and liver health and resistance against bacterial infection in genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT, Oreochromis niloticus). Fingerling GIFTs (n = 120; initial weight 1.33 ± 0.00 g) were randomly assigned to twelve 90-L tanks (four tanks per diet, 10 fish per tank) with three groups: control group (basal high fat diet), 1% XMX-1 group and 2% XMX-1 group (basal diet supplemented with 10 and 20 g XMX-1/kg feed respectively). After 49 days feeding trial, the growth performance and gut and liver health parameters of tilapia were evaluated. Also the gut microbiota and virome were detected by sequencing. 2% XMX-1 fermentation product had no effect on growth performance. For gut health, the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-lα (Hif-1α) tend to increase in 1% XMX-1 group (P = 0.053). The expression of intestinal interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor growth factor β (TGF-β) was significantly down-regulated in 1% and 2% XMX-1 groups (P < 0.05), and the intestinal expression of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) had a trend to decrease (P = 0.08) in 1% XMX-1 group versus control. 1% and 2% XMX-1 groups also increased the intestinal expression of tight junction genes Claudin (P = 0.06 and 0.07, respectively). For liver health, XMX-1 fermentation product significantly decreased liver TAG (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the hepatic expression of lipid synthesis gene fatty acid synthase (FAS) was significantly decreased and the expression of lipid catabolism related-gene uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) was significantly increased in 1% XMX-1 and 2% XMX-1 groups (P < 0.01). And the hepatic expression of IL-1β and IL-6 significantly decreased in 1% XMX-1 and 2% XMX-1 groups (P < 0.05). XMX-1 fermentation product increased the abundance of Fusobacteria in the gut microbiota and 2% XMX-1 group led to alteration in the virome composition at family level. Lastly, the time of tilapia death post Aeromoans challenge was delayed in 1% XMX-1 and 2% XMX-1 groups compared with control. To sum up, our results show that the dietary supplementation of XMX-1 fermentation product can improve the gut and liver health as well as the resistance against pathogenic bacteria of tilapia.

Abstract
Teleost fish are the most diverse group of extant vertebrates and have varied digestive anatomical structures and strategies, suggesting they also possess an array of different host-microbiota interactions. Differences in fish gut microbiota have been shown to affect host development, the process of gut colonization, and the outcomes of gene-environment or immune system-microbiota interactions. There is generally a lack of studies on the digestive mechanisms and microbiota of agastric short-intestine fish however, meaning that we do not understand how changes in gut microbial diversity might influence the health of these types of fish. To help fill these gaps in knowledge, we decided to study the Mexican pike silverside (Chirostoma estor) which has a simplified alimentary canal (agastric, short-intestine, 0.7 gut relative length) to observe the diversity and metabolic potential of its intestinal microbiota. We characterized gut microbial populations using high-throughput sequencing of the V3 region in bacterial 16S rRNA genes while searching for population shifts resulting associated with fish development in different environments and cultivation methods. Microbiota samples were taken from the digesta, anterior and posterior intestine (the three different intestinal components) of fish that grew wild in a lake, that were cultivated in indoor tanks, or that were raised in outdoor ponds. Gut microbial diversity was significantly higher in wild fish than in cultivated fish, suggesting a loss of diversity when fish are raised in controlled environments. The most abundant phyla observed in these experiments were Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, particularly of the genera Mycoplasma, Staphylococcus, Spiroplasma, and Aeromonas. Of the 14,161 OTUs observed in this experiment, 133 were found in all groups, and 17 of these, belonging to Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, and Spiroplasma genera, were found in all samples suggesting the existence of a core C. estor microbiome. Functional metagenomic prediction of bacterial ecological functions using PICRUSt2 suggested that different intestinal components select for functionally distinct microbial populations with variation in pathways related to the metabolism of amino acids, vitamins, cofactors, and energy. Our results provide, for the first time, information on the bacterial populations present in an agastric, short-gut teleost with commercial potential and show that controlled cultivation of this fish reduces the diversity of its intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
High dose (0.3%) of dietary histamine can cause adverse effects on growth performance, innate immunity, and gut health in juvenile grouper (Epinephelus coioides). In the present study, three autochthonous probiotics (Bacillus pumilus SE5, Psychrobacter sp. SE6, and Bacillus clausii DE5) were supplemented separately to diets containing 0.3% of histamine and their effects on growth performance, innate immunity, and gut health of grouper (E. coioides) were evaluated in a 56-day feeding trial. The results showed considerable increase in weight gain, specific growth rate, hepatosomatic index, and decreased feed conversion rate in groupers fed with probiotic-supplemented diets. Supplementation of autochthonous probiotics has improved antioxidant capacity and innate immunity of E. coioides by measuring correlative parameters, such as total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase activity, malondialdehyde content, and so on. Additionally, dietary probiotics have significantly reduced the levels of serum interleukin-1β (at days 28 and 56), fatty acid-binding protein 2, and intestinal trefoil factor (at day 28), and promoted intestinal integrity following remarkably increased muscle thickness and mucosal fold height at day 56, especially in grouper fed with B. pumilus SE5 containing diet (P < 0.05). On day 56, the gut microbial composition of E. coioides was positively shaped by autochthonous probiotics, the relative abundance of potentially pathogenic Photobacterium decreased while beneficial Lactobacillus increased in fish fed with probiotic strains, especially with B. pumilus SE5 and B. clausii DE5. These results suggest that among the three autochthonous probiotic strains tested, B. pumilus SE5 is showing better efficiency in alleviating the adverse effects of (high levels) dietary histamine by decreasing the expression of inflammatory markers and by improving the growth, innate immunity, and gut health of juvenile grouper E. coioides.

Abstract
A mixed culture of probiotics, one from the genus Bacillus and one lactic acid bacterium (LAB), was developed to be used as a feed additive for enhancing growth, innate immunity and disease resistance in Pangasius bocourti. From our earlier work, three probiotic Bacillus species, Bacillus siamensis B44v, Bacillus sp. B51f and Bacillus aerius B81e, and three probiotic LABs, Streptococcus lutetiensis L7c, Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum (synonym. Lactobacillus paraplantarum) L34b-2 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (synonym. Lactobacillus plantarum) L42g, were selected for comparison. These bacteria, which express probiotic properties including bacteriocin-like activity against Aeromonas hydrophila, were subjected to in vivo screening in hybrid catfish (Clarias macrocephalus × Clarias gariepinus). A 30-day feed-trial followed by a challenge test in screening experiments resulted in the prominent B. aerius B81e and L. paraplantarum L34b-2 being selected. A mixture of these bacteria was added to a diet for P. bocourti. After 60-day feeding, the fish fed with mixed probiotics had weight gain, specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio improved significantly (p < 0.01) when compared to the control. Both humoral and cellular immunity were significantly higher in probiotic-fed fish. Following the 60-day feeding experiment, P. bocourti fed with the diet containing mixed probiotics had a higher survival rate than the control fish after injection with a virulent A. hydrophila. It can be concluded that a combination of B. aerius strain B81e and L. paraplantarum strain L34b-2 markedly improved growth performance, innate immunity and disease resistance of P. bocourti.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary non-encapsulated and microencapsulated Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus on growth performance, intestinal enzymatic activities, antioxidant capacity and hepato-biochemical parameters of rainbow trout before or after exposure to lead via diet. Fingerling fish (16 ± 4 g) were divided into four groups: negative control (NC), positive control (PC), probiotic (PR) and encapsulated probiotic (EN-PR). During the pre-exposure period (days 0-45), fish in the NC and PC groups received the basal diet, whereas fish in the PR and EN-PR groups were fed with basal diet containing 108 CFU g−1 feed of non-encapsulated and microencapsulated probiotic, respectively. During the exposure period (days 46-66), the fish in the probiotic and PC groups were co-treated with 500 μg g−1 feed of lead nitrate. Blood, liver and gut samples were taken at days 0, 45, 52, 59 and 66. The results revealed that growth performance and intestinal enzymatic activities were significantly (p< 0.05) improved in the probiotic groups compared to the NC group (day 45). Dietary exposure to lead resulted in the highest levels of liver aspartate aminotransferase (AST), liver alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and serum malondialdehyde (MDA), and the lowest activities of serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the PC group (day 66). The levels of liver ALP were significantly (p< 0.05) lower in the probiotic groups compared to the NC and PC groups prior to and after exposure to dietary lead. Serum levels of total protein, albumin, SOD, CAT and glutathione (GSH) were significantly increased in fish fed with both non-encapsulated and microencapsulated probiotics (p< 0.05). However, microencapsulated probiotic showed the greatest potential for alleviation of the disturbed activities of intestinal and hepatic enzymes, and improvement of serum biochemical and antioxidant parameters. Our findings suggest that L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, particularly in the microencapsulated form, can be used as a potential probiotic to protect rainbow trout from dietborne lead toxicity.

Abstract
The effect of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis strain PTCC 1403 as a potential probiotic was investigated on the growth, hematobiochemical, immune responses, and resistance to Yersinia ruckeri infection in rainbow trout. A total of 240 fish were distributed into 12 fiberglass tanks representing four groups (× 3 replicates). Each tank was stocked with 20 fish (average initial weight: 11.81 ± 0.32 g) and fed L. lactis subsp. lactis PTCC 1403 at 0 (control, T0), 1 × 109 (T1), 2 × 109 (T2), and 3 × 109 (T3) CFU/g feed for 8 weeks. The results showed enhanced protein efficiency ratio and reduced feed conversion ratio in the fish-fed T2 diet. Further, fish-fed T2 and T3 diets showed a significantly higher survival rate than the control (p < 0.05). Trypsin, lipase, and protease activities were increased in fish-fed L. lactis subsp. lactis PTCC 1403 compared to the control (p < 0.05). Fish fed with a T2 diet showed significantly (p < 0.05) lower glucose content than other groups. The blood lysozyme activity and IgM showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher values in fish-fed T2 and T3 diets than in other groups. The antioxidative responses were increased in fish-fed T2 and T3 diets (p < 0.05). After 7 days post-Y. ruckeri challenge, the cumulative mortality rate showed the lowest value in fish fed with T1 and T2 diets, while the highest value was recorded in the control group. In conclusion, the results revealed beneficial effects of L. lactis subsp. lactis PTCC 1403 on the feed efficiency, immune response, and resistance to Y. ruckeri infection in rainbow trout.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of dietary supplementation of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) + β-glucan (Immunogen®) was investigated on growth performance, body composition, gut microflora, innate immune responses and gene expression of some proinflammatory cytokines in shabout (Tor grypus). Shabout fingerlings (35 ± 1.2 g) were fed with basal diet (control) or basal diet supplemented with Immunogen® at 0.5, 1 and 1.5% of feed for 90 days. According to the results, growth parameters were significantly improved in fish fed with prebiotic (1 and 1.5%) for 90 days (p < 0.05). The carcass protein content was significantly higher in fish nourished by prebiotic at 1.5% of feed for 90 days compared to fish received the basal diet (p < 0.05). Feeding with various levels of Immunogen® resulted in the significant promotion of the population of intestinal Lactobacillus spp. in the prebiotic-treated groups relative to the control group (p < 0.05). Serum total globulin was significantly higher in all prebiotic groups relative to the control group at day 60. Serum bactericidal and lysozyme activities were significantly (p < 0.05) elevated after feeding with dietary prebiotic at all intervals (days 30, 60 and 90). However, the highest serum bactericidal activities were recorded in fish fed with Immunogen® at 1.5% of diet (p < 0.05). The transcription levels of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin 8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were significantly increased in the head kidney of fish treated with dietary prebiotic at all intervals. The results show that dietary supplementation with Immunogen®, particularly at the level of 1.5%, can positively alter growth parameters, carcass protein, intestinal microflora and immune responses of shabout.

Abstract
Probiotics have been defined as live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer health benefits to the host. The use of probiotics in aquaculture is an attractive bio-friendly method to decrease the impact of infectious diseases, but is still not an extended practice. Although many studies have investigated the systemic and mucosal immunological effects of probiotics, not all of them have established whether they were actually capable of increasing resistance to different types of pathogens, being this the outmost desired goal. In this sense, in the current paper, we have summarized those experiments in which probiotics were shown to provide increased resistance against bacterial, viral or parasitic pathogens. Additionally, we have reviewed what is known for fish probiotics regarding the mechanisms through which they exert positive effects on pathogen resistance, including direct actions on the pathogen, as well as positive effects on the host.

Abstract
The outbreak of diseases leading to substantial loss is a major bottleneck in aquaculture. Over the last decades, the concept of using feed probiotics was more in focus to address the growth and health of cultivable aquatic organisms. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of the distinct functionality of archaea from conventional probiotics in nutrient utilization, specific caloric contribution, evading immune response and processing thermal resistance. The prime limitation of conventional probiotics is the viability of desired microbes under harsh feed processing conditions. To overcome the constraints of commercial probiotics pertaining to incompatibility towards industrial processing procedure, a super microbe, archaea, appears to be a potential alternative approach in aquaculture. The peculiarity of the archaeal cell wall provides them with heat stability and rigidity under industrial processing conditions. Besides, archaea being one of the gut microbial communities participates in various health-oriented biological functions in animals. Thus, the current review devoted that administration of archaea in aquafeed could be a promising strategy in aquaculture. Archaea may be used as a potential probiotic with the possible modes of functions and advantages over conventional probiotics in aquafeed preparation. The present review also provides the challenges associated with the use of archaea for aquaculture and a brief outline of the patents on archaea to highlight the various use of archaea in different sectors.

Abstract
The health and environmental risks associated with antibiotic use in aquaculture have promoted bacterial probiotics as an alternative approach to control fish infections in vulnerable larval and juvenile stages. However, evidence-based identification of probiotics is often hindered by the complexity of bacteria-host interactions and host variability in microbiologically uncontrolled conditions. While these difficulties can be partially resolved using gnotobiotic models harboring no or reduced microbiota, most host-microbe interaction studies are carried out in animal models with little relevance for fish farming. Here we studied host-microbiota-pathogen interactions in a germ-free and gnotobiotic model of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), one of the most widely cultured salmonids. We demonstrated that germ-free larvae raised in sterile conditions displayed no significant difference in growth after 35 days compared to conventionally-raised larvae, but were extremely sensitive to infection by Flavobacterium columnare, a common freshwater fish pathogen causing major economic losses worldwide. Furthermore, re-conventionalization with 11 culturable species from the conventional trout microbiota conferred resistance to F. columnare infection. Using mono-re-conventionalized germ-free trout, we identified that this protection is determined by a commensal Flavobacterium strain displaying antibacterial activity against F. columnare. Finally, we demonstrated that use of gnotobiotic trout is a suitable approach for the identification of both endogenous and exogenous probiotic bacterial strains protecting teleostean hosts against F. columnare. This study therefore establishes an ecologically-relevant gnotobiotic model for the study of host-pathogen interactions and colonization resistance in farmed fish.

Abstract
Aquaculture is the fastest-growing sector in food production worldwide. For decades, research on animal physiology, nutrition, and behavior established the foundations of best practices in land-based fish rearing and disease control. Current DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, and data science technologies now allow deep investigations of host-associated microbiomes in a tractable fashion. Adequate use of these technologies can illuminate microbiome dynamics and aid the engineering of microbiome-based solutions to disease prevention in an unprecedented manner. This review examines molecular studies of bacterial diversity, function, and host immunitymodulation at early stages of fish development, where microbial infections cause important economic losses. We uncover host colonization and virulence factors within a synthetic assemblage of fish pathogens using high-end comparative genomics and address the use of probiotics and paraprobiotics as applicable disease-prevention strategies in fish larval and juvenile rearing. We finally propose guidelines for future microbiome research of presumed relevance to fish larviculture.

Abstract
Probiotics administration in aquafeed is known to increase feed consumption and absorption due to their capacity to release a wide range of digestive enzymes and nutrients which can participate in digestion process and feed utilization, along with the absorption of diet components led to an increase in host's health and well-being. Furthermore, probiotics improve gut maturation, prevention of intestinal disorders, predigestion of antinutrient factors found in the feed ingredients, gut microbiota, disease resistance against pathogens and metabolism. The beneficial immune effects of probiotics are well established in finfish. However, in comparison, similar studies are less abundant in the shellfish. In this review, the discussions will mainly focus on studies reported the last 2 years. In recent studies, native probiotic bacteria were isolated and fed back to their hosts. Although beneficial effects were demonstrated, some studies showed adverse effects when treated with a high concentration. This adverse effect may be due to the imbalance of the gut microbiota caused by the replenished commensal probiotics. Probiotics revealed greatest effect on the shrimp digestive system particularly in the larval and early post-larval stages, and stimulate the production of endogenous enzymes in shrimp and contribute with improved the enzyme activities in the gut, as well as disease resistance.

Abstract
In the present study, the novel probiotic strain Acinetobacter KU011TH with an evident lack of pathogenicity in catfish was experimented. Three practical administration routes, namely, feed additive (FD), water-soluble additive (SOL), and a combination route (FD+SOL), were applied in two sizes of catfish. After 120 days of FD+SOL administration, catfish fingerlings (15 g) exhibited a significant improvement in all tested growth performance parameters. For 15- and 30-day applications at the juvenile stage (150 g), phagocytic activity, phagocytic index, lysozyme activity, respiratory burst activity, alternative complement pathway, and bactericidal activity were significantly increased. Furthermore, probiotic-administered bighead catfish exhibited an upregulated expression of several immune-related genes in tested organs. Significant colonization by Acinetobacter KU011TH in rearing water and on skin and gills was observed among experimental groups. Histological analysis clearly indicated enhanced physical characteristics of skin mucosal immunity in the treated groups. No histopathological changes in the gills, skin, intestine or liver were observed among the fish groups. Interestingly, after challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila, the survival rates of the treated groups were significantly higher than those of the controls. In conclusion, the novel probiont Acinetobacter KU011TH provides a potent strategy for improvement in growth and disease resistance, which is an important steppingstone for sustaining catfish aquaculture.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC), Bacillus subtilis (BS) and Enterococcus faecalis (EF), singly and in combination, on the dry matter intake (DMI), milk production and composition, and faecal microflora of Saanen dairy goats. Fifty goats were randomly divided into five groups: (a) basal diet (control); (b) basal diet + SC; (c) basal diet + BS; (d) basal diet + EF; and (e) basal diet + mixed probiotics. Each treated animal received 5 g/d of probiotics for a total administration of 5 × 1,011 CFU/goat per day. The inclusion of B. subtilis and E. faecalis in the diet of lactating Saanen goats increased DMI (p < .05). Enhanced milk yield was observed with BS and EF. Milk fat percentage was significantly increased by feeding mixed probiotics compared with the control (p < .05); supplying SC, BS and mixed probiotics enhanced the protein percentage (p < .05). The milk lactose percentage in the SC and BS groups was higher than in the control (p < .05). The amount of milk total solids was higher after feeding EF or mixed probiotics than in the control group (p < .05). Non-fat solids showed no notable differences among groups (p > .05). There was no significant influence on gut bacterial abundance and diversity from adding these three probiotics, singly or in combination. Bacteroidales, Escherichia-Shigella and Christensenellaceae abundances were decreased by supplying these probiotics but Succinivibrionaceae increased. In conclusion, there were positive influences of probiotic feed supplementation on intake, milk performance and intestinal microecology.

Abstract
The use of probiotics as alternatives to antibiotics for disease control is a relatively eco-friendly approach in aquaculture; hence, studies isolating and assessing the benefit of potential probiotics to fish farming are common. The zebrafish is an excellent model system for validating beneficial functions of potential probiotics before their practical application in aquaculture. Here, a potentially probiotic Chromobacterium aquaticum was isolated from lake water samples and characterized by biochemical analysis and 16S rDNA sequencing. The probiotic produced extracellular enzymes (protease and xylanase) and a bacteriocin-like substance, which exhibited tolerance to extreme pH and high-temperature conditions and broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against diverse pathogens, including aquatic, foodborne, clinical and plant pathogens. The effects of C. aquaticum on zebrafish nutrient metabolism, growth performance and innate immunity were evaluated by measuring the expression of indicator genes after C. aquaticum feeding for 8 weeks. Fish administered the probiotic exhibited significantly increased hepatic mRNA expression of carbohydrate metabolism-related genes, including glucokinase (GK), hexokinase (HK), glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), and pyruvate kinase (PK-L), and growth-related genes, including the growth hormone receptor (GHR) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). Innate immune-related genes (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-10, IL-21, NF-κb, lysozyme and complement C3b) were induced in fish with probiotic supplementation. Probiotic-treated fish exhibited a higher survival rate than control fish after challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila and Streptococcus iniae. Together, these data suggest that C. aquaticum, as a probiotic feed supplement, could enhance nutrient metabolism and growth performance and could modulate innate immunity against A. hydrophila and S. iniae in zebrafish.

Abstract
Nowadays, there is no suitable treatment for vibriosis in groupers. So an eco-efficient and environmentally friendly treatment is necessary for the grouper industry. Probiotic-feeding has been a promising strategy to control the bacterial pathogens in aquaculture. A new Bacillus velezensis strain named K2 was isolated from the intestinal tract of healthy grouper, and exhibited wide antimicrobial spectrum of against fish pathogens, including Vibrio harveyi, Vibrio alginolyticus, Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas veronii, Aeromonas caviae, Enterococcus casseliflavus and Lactococcus garvieae. Moreover, results of the safety of B. velezensis K2 showed that intraperitoneal injection of K2 in healthy grouper did not cause any pathological abnormality or death, indicating this bacteria could be considered as a candidate probiotic in aquaculture. Groupers were fed with the diets containing 1 × 107 cfu/g of B. velezensis K2 for 4 weeks. Various immune parameters were examined at 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks of post-feeding. Results showed that diets supplemented with K2 significantly increased serum acid phosphatase (ACP) activity (P < 0.05). Results of the mRNA expression of immune-related genes in the head kidney of hybrid grouper showed that the expression of lysozyme gene was significantly upregulated after 1 and 2 weeks of feeding (P < 0.05). A significant up-regulation of the expression of piscidin, IgM and MyD88 were detected at day 21, whereas the TLR3 and TLR5 showed lower expression compared to the controls during 21 days, and a significant decrease of TLR3 gene was found at day 28 (P < 0.05). After challenge with V. harveyi, the survival rate of fish administrated with the strain K2 for 28 days was signifiacantly higher than the controls without this strain (P < 0.05). These results collectively suggest that B. velezensis K2 is a potential probiotic species to improve health status and disease resistance and can be developed as a probiotic agent in grouper industry.
