Abstract
Lifestyle medicine leverages six pillars-a predominantly plant-based diet, physical activity, sleep, avoiding risky substance, stress management, and social connection. Facilitating behavior change represents the crux of success with each of these pillars. Positive emotions and positive psychology constructs are shown to drive behavior change in the upward spiral theory of lifestyle change. Moreover, positive psychology interventions serve as additional, independent protective health factors. This paper offers a brief review of the empirical evidence for these roles of positive psychology and makes the case for explicitly adding positive psychology to the foundational lifestyle medicine pillars.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With a median age at diagnosis of 70, lung cancer remains a significant public health challenge for older Americans. Surgery is a key component in treating most patients with non-metastatic lung cancer. These patients experience postoperative pain, fatigue, loss of respiratory capacity, and decreased physical function. Data on quality of life (QOL) in older adults undergoing lung cancer surgery is limited, and few interventions are designed to target the needs of older adults and their family caregivers (FCGs). The primary aim of this comparative effectiveness trial is to determine whether telephone-based physical activity coaching before and after surgery will be more beneficial than physical activity self-monitoring alone for older adults and their FCGs. METHODS In this multicenter comparative effectiveness trial, 382 older adults (≥ 65 years) with lung cancer and their FCGs will be recruited before surgery and randomized to either telephone-based physical activity coaching or physical activity self-monitoring alone. Participants allocated to the telephone-based coaching comparator will receive five telephone sessions with coaches (1 pre and 4 post surgery), an intervention resource manual, and a wristband pedometer. Participants in the self-monitoring only arm will receive American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) physical activity information and wristband pedometers. All participants will be assessed at before surgery (baseline), at discharge, and at days 30, 60, and 180 post-discharge. The primary endpoint is the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) at 30 days post-discharge. Geriatric assessment, lower extremity function, self-reported physical function, self-efficacy, and QOL will also be assessed. DISCUSSION The trial will determine whether this telephone-based physical activity coaching approach can enhance postoperative functional capacity and QOL outcomes for older adults with lung cancer and their FCGs. Trial results will provide critical findings to inform models of postoperative care for older adults with cancer and their FCGs. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT06196008.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Interests have been emerging in using positive psychology interventions (PPIs) to improve diabetes self-management (DSM) behaviors (e.g., blood glucose monitoring, physical activity). To explore the impact of those interventions on DSM behaviors, we summarized the evidence of PPIs on self-management behaviors among both type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients between 2012 and 2022. RECENT FINDINGS Among the eight studies identified, different study designs and types of PPIs were apparent. Typical PPIs (e.g., activities enhancing positive affect/gratitude/self-affirmation/optimism) were usually applied to T1D patients (N = 5); PPIs were usually combined with motivational interviewing for T2D patients (N = 3). Contrary to expectations, PPIs did not consistently demonstrate positive effects on self-management behaviors' change regardless of the types of diabetes patients, compared to the control groups. Improvements in diabetes patients' self-management behaviors from PPIs are still unclear. Future studies should more rigorously evaluate and identify the active ingredients of PPIs for behavioral changes among diabetes patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Young adult (YA) cancer survivors experience clinically significant distress and have limited access to psychosocial support. Given growing evidence for unique adaptive benefits of positive emotion in the context of health-related and other life stress, we developed an eHealth positive emotion skills intervention for post-treatment survivors called EMPOWER (Enhancing Management of Psychological Outcomes With Emotion Regulation) and evaluated feasibility and proof of concept for reducing distress and enhancing well-being. METHOD In this single-arm pilot feasibility trial, post-treatment YA cancer survivors (ages 18-39) participated in the EMPOWER intervention which included 8 skills (e.g., gratitude, mindfulness, acts of kindness). Participants completed surveys at baseline (pre-intervention), 8 weeks (post-intervention), and 12 weeks (1-month follow-up). Primary outcomes included feasibility (assessed by participation percentage) and acceptability (would recommend EMPOWER skills to a friend). Secondary outcomes included psychological well-being (mental health, positive affect, life satisfaction, meaning/purpose, general self-efficacy) and distress (depression, anxiety, anger). RESULTS We assessed 220 YAs for eligibility; 77% declined. Of those screened, 44 (88%) were eligible and consented, 33 began the intervention, and 26 (79%) completed the intervention. Overall retention was 61% at 12 weeks. Average acceptability ratings were high (8.8/10). Participants (M = 30.8 years, SD = 6.6) were 77% women, 18% racial/ethnic minorities, and 34% breast cancer survivors. At 12 weeks, EMPOWER was associated with improved mental health, positive affect, life satisfaction, meaning/purpose, and general self-efficacy (ps < .05, ds = .45 to .63) and decreased anger (p < .05, d = - 0.41). CONCLUSION EMPOWER demonstrated evidence of feasibility and acceptability as well as proof of concept for enhancing well-being and reducing distress. Self-guided, eHealth interventions show promise for addressing YA cancer survivors' needs and warrant additional research to optimize survivorship care. Abstract
The global threat of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is alarmingly increasing. The health and economic burden of improper lifestyle choices is immense. Reducing modifiable risk factors has been demonstrated to significantly prevent chronic diseases. At this crucial time, lifestyle medicine (LM) has been recognized as an evidence-based medical domain applicable to NCDs. Among the tools used in LM, motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered, collaborative counseling approach. In this evidence-based review article, we discuss recent literature on the application of MI in the six LM pillars defined by the British Society of LM (BSLM): healthy eating, mental wellbeing, healthy relationships, physical activity, minimizing harmful substances, and sleep. MI helps strengthen patients' motivation to ameliorate behaviorally influenced health problems, improve treatment adherence, and optimize medical interventions. Technically correct, theoretically congruent, and psychometrically sound MI interventions yield satisfactory outcomes and help improve patient quality of life. Lifestyle change is often a gradual process involving multiple efforts and setbacks. MI is based on the idea that change is a process rather than an event. Extensive literature evidence supports the benefits of MI treatment, and interest in research on MI application is increasing across all BSLM pillars. MI helps people alter their thoughts and feelings about making changes by recognizing obstacles to change. Even interventions of short duration have been reported to yield better outcomes. Healthcare professionals must understand the relevance and importance of MI in clinical practice.

Abstract
Positive psychological well-being is prospectively associated with superior health outcomes. Positive psychology interventions have promise as a potentially feasible and effective means of increasing well-being and health in those with medical illness, and several initial studies have shown the potential of such programs in medical populations. At the same time, numerous key issues in the existing positive psychology literature must be addressed to ensure that these interventions are optimally effective. These include (1) assessing the nature and scope of PPWB as part of intervention development and application; (2) identifying and utilizing theoretical models that can clearly outline potential mechanisms by which positive psychology interventions may affect health outcomes; (3) determining consistent, realistic targets for positive psychology interventions; (4) developing consistent approaches to the promotion of positive psychological well-being; (5) emphasizing the inclusion of diverse samples in treatment development and testing; and (6) considering implementation and scalability from the start of intervention development to ensure effective real-world application. Attention to these six domains could greatly facilitate the generation of effective, replicable, and easily adopted positive psychology programs for medical populations with the potential to have an important impact on public health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diabetes distress typically causes depressive symptoms; common comorbidity of diabetes unpleasantly affects patients' medical and psychological functions. Psychotherapeutic interventions are effective treatments to treat depressive symptoms and to improve the quality of life in many chronic diseases including diabetes. The present study investigated the efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) to treat depressive symptoms in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using experimental and waitlist control conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 130 diagnosed patients with T2DM were taken from outdoor patients services of different hospitals in Faisalabad. Ninety patients met the eligibility criteria and were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 45) and waitlist control (n = 45) conditions. All the patients completed clinical interviews and assessment measures at pre-and post-assessment stages (16 weeks intervals). Medical consultants at the respective hospitals diagnosed the patients on the base of their medical reports and then referred those patients to us. Then we used different scales to assess primary and secondary outcomes: Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) to assess primary outcomes, and a Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI), a Revised Version of the Diabetes Quality of Life Questionnaire (DQLQ), and a General Medication Adherence Scale (GMAS) were used to investigate secondary outcomes. Repeated measure ANOVA was used to analyze the results. RESULTS The findings indicated that patients who received CBT got a significant reduction in their diabetes distress F(1,60) = 222.710, P < 0.001, η2 = .788), depressive symptoms F(1,60) = 94.436, P < 0.001, η2 = .611), health anxiety F(1,60) = 201.915, P < .0.001, η2 = 771), and a significant improvement in their quality of life F(1,60) = 83.352, P < 0.001, η2 = .581), treatment adherence F(1,60) = 67.579, P < 0.001, η2 = .566) and physical activity schedule F(1,60) = 164.245, P < .0.001, η2 = .736 as compared to the patients in waitlist control condition. CONCLUSION It is concluded that cognitive behavior therapy is an effective and promising intervention for depressive symptoms, diabetes distress, and health anxiety which also helps the person to promote quality of life, treatment adherence and physical activity.

Abstract
Background: Physical activity is critical for preventing and treating Type 2 diabetes (T2D). It is important to identify different profiles of physical activity change among those participating in behavioral interventions to optimize intervention-person fit. Methods: This study analyzes longitudinal trajectories of change in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in a positive psychology (PP) and motivational interviewing (MI) intervention for T2D, using latent growth curve modeling (LGCM). Objective measures of MVPA were collected using accelerometers at three time points: pre-intervention, immediately post-intervention, and eight weeks post-intervention. LGCM analyses identified subpopulations of participants who responded similarly to the intervention and examined if sociodemographic, medical and psychosocial characteristics were associated with MVPA trajectories. Results: Analyses included 47 participants with complete follow-ups: 49% male, 81% non-Hispanic white, average age 66.1 (SD = 10.1). Overall, 36% of the participants increased MVPA while 57% did not. LGCM identified three profiles with distinct MVPA trajectories. Profile 1 (‘Started Low, No Change’; 65.8% of participants) with a starting mean of 4.54 min of MVPA/day and decreased by −3.36 min. Profile 2 (‘Moderate-High Start, Minimal Change,’ 27.4% of participants) and had a starting mean of 22.86 min/day of MVPA with an average increase of 1.03 min. Profile 3 (‘Moderate Start, Ended High’; 6.8% of participants), had a starting mean of 7.33 min MVPA/day, and increased by 28.4 min. Being male, younger, having fewer medical and psychiatric comorbidities were associated with increases in MVPA. Conclusions: This secondary analysis detected three distinct physical activity profiles during and after a PP-MI intervention. Future interventions can target individuals with characteristics that showed the greatest benefit and add additional supports to people in groups that did not increase physical activity as much. These findings show a need for targeted and sustained behavior change strategies during and after physical activity interventions. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov; identifier: NCT03001999.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, long-term isolation and loneliness will cause college students' psychological fluctuations. Especially in online teaching, the lack of communication for a long time has led to a greatly reduced learning enthusiasm of college students. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the cultivation methods of the positive psychological quality of college students under the epidemic situation through the research on the positive psychology of college students' English learning. Aiming at the psychological status of college students, this paper focuses on analyzing the relationship between social support, psychological capital, and psychological health to explore more targeted ways of cultivating positive psychology. Because of the online and offline teaching mode, this paper focuses on analyzing the support environment of the online teaching mode, and analyses the current forms of English teaching. Experiments show that the direct path from psychological capital to mental health is not significant. However, the mediating path of psychological capital to mental health through social support was significant (p < 0.001). It shows that social support plays a complete mediating role, and the effect size of the mediation model reaches 49.70%. It shows that the current college students' English learning positive psychological quality is not high. In response to this, it is necessary to strengthen the tendency and ability to use social support and use the family environment to communicate more to achieve the cultivation of positive psychological quality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this systematic review was to explore and report the evidence and gaps in the literature for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) studying the effects of motivational interviewing (MI)-based telehealth interventions on outcomes among persons with diabetes (PWD) or prediabetes. METHODS Following a modified Cochrane approach, we searched Pubmed, CENTRAL, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Clinicaltrials.gov. Included studies were RCTs published in English before March 25, 2021 evaluating MI-based telehealth on outcomes for adults with diabetes or prediabetes. RESULTS A total of 21 retained articles captured results for 6436 PWD. Among the most commonly investigated outcomes, 60% of articles documented A1C reductions (ranging from<1% to>3%), 56% documented systolic blood pressure reductions, 57% documented diabetes self-efficacy/empowerment improvements, and 40% documented physical activity improvements. Conversely, diastolic blood pressure, lipid panels, body mass index, depressive symptoms, and quality of life were frequently measured outcomes, where MI-based telehealth yielded minor effects (<30% of articles demonstrating improvements). CONCLUSIONS MI-based telehealth seems most effective for improving A1C, systolic blood pressure, diabetes self-efficacy, and physical activity behaviors. Variability in outcome assessment and intervention heterogeneity were key challenges impeding comparisons across retained articles. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS MI-based telehealth interventions demonstrate promising results for improving outcomes in PWD.

Abstract
Background Physical activity during midlife (ages 45-64) plays a major role in the prevention of chronic and serious medical conditions. Unfortunately, many midlife adults struggle to be physically active in the setting of low levels of psychological well-being and the management of multiple confluent sources of stress. Effective, scalable, midlife-specific interventions are needed to promote physical activity and prevent the development of chronic medical conditions. Objectives In an initial proof-of-concept trial, we assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a new, midlife-adapted, phone- and text message-based intervention using positive psychology (PP) skill-building and motivational interviewing (MI) techniques. We secondarily analyzed post-intervention changes in accelerometer-measured physical activity and self-reported outcomes. Methods The PP-MI intervention included six weekly phone sessions with a study trainer, with completion of PP activities and physical activity goals between calls, and in the subsequent six weeks briefer phone check-ins were conducted. Text messages over the 12-week intervention period were utilized to support participants and identify barriers to goal completion. Feasibility (session completion rates) and acceptability (participant ratings of intervention ease and utility) were assessed via descriptive statistics, and pre-post improvements in psychological, functional, and physical activity outcomes at 12 weeks were examined via mixed effects regression models. Results Twelve midlife adults with low baseline physical activity enrolled in the single-arm trial. Overall, 76.8% of all possible sessions were completed by participants, and mean ratings of weekly phone sessions were 8.9/10 (SD 1.6), exceeding our a priori thresholds for feasibility and acceptability. Participants demonstrated generally medium to large effect size magnitude improvements in accelerometer-measured physical activity, psychological outcomes, and function. Conclusions A novel, midlife-specific phone- and text-based PP-MI intervention was feasible and had promising effects on physical activity and other clinically relevant outcomes, supporting next-step testing of this program via a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kidney Failure (KF) is associated with impaired physical function, reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL), increased healthcare costs, and high rates of cardiovascular complications and mortality. Among individuals with KF, well-being and related constructs, such as positive affect, optimism, self-efficacy, and resilience, may have both mental and physical health benefits, independent of the effects of negative emotions and affective syndromes. However, there has been minimal review of these characteristics in people with KF. METHODS We conducted a scoping review, using a semi-systematic approach, to summarize the relationships between well-being characteristics and renal health, the potential mechanisms mediating these relationships, and the effects of interventions that promote positive constructs on adherence and health outcomes. We conducted database searches using PubMed and PsycInfo until November 2020. Articles were included if they examined (1) relationships between a well-being construct and health outcome in patients with KF, (2) potential biological or behavioral mediators, or (3) interventions that target positive psychological constructs as outcomes or mediators in KF, and (4) were written in English or Spanish. RESULTS Among patients with KF, well-being constructs are associated with increased health-related quality of life (HRQoL), reduced morbidity and complications, and increased survival. Potential mechanisms mediating these associations include reduced inflammation, improved autonomic and endothelial function, and improved health behavior adherence. Psychological and psychosocial interventions promoting well-being have primarily focused on improving self-efficacy to promote behavior change, with limited study of interventions to promote positive psychological constructs in this population. CONCLUSIONS Further research is needed to better understand the relationship between well-being constructs and health, specific to KF populations. This could inform the development of needed interventions that harness the promotion of other positive characteristics to improve well-being and health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Daily adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) for 5 or 10 years is the standard of care for women diagnosed with non-metastatic hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. However, many women experience AET-related issues that may hamper quality of life and adherence. Here, we aimed to describe women's perceptions of motivational interviewing (MI)-guided consultations delivered by a trained nurse navigator over the telephone to enhance AET adherence. METHODS Eighteen women who were first prescribed AET for non-metastatic breast cancer in the last 5 years, who self-reported AET-related issues, and who participated in at least two MI-guided consultations over a year were interviewed about their perceptions of the intervention, using a semi-structured interview guide. Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. RESULTS Three main themes emerged from the data about women's perceptions on MI-guided consultations. These consultations were described as (1) a person-centred experience, (2) providing key information about AET, and (3) supportive of present and future AET experience, by contributing to AET side-effect management, motivation, adherence, calming negative emotions, improving well-being and self-esteem, and making women to feel empowered. CONCLUSIONS Nurse-led telephone-based MI-guided consultations about AET were found to respond to participants' needs and to enhance participants' perceptions of being informed and being supported in experiencing various facets of AET. Telephone-based consultations for AET are perceived as a promising strategy in an increasing virtual care world.

Abstract
As clinicians delivering health care, we are very good at treating disease but often not as good at treating the person. The focus of our attention has been on the specific physical condition rather than the patient as a whole. Less attention has been given to psychological health and how that can contribute to physical health and disease. However, there is now an increasing appreciation of how psychological health can contribute not only in a negative way to cardiovascular disease (CVD) but also in a positive way to better cardiovascular health and reduced cardiovascular risk. This American Heart Association scientific statement was commissioned to evaluate, synthesize, and summarize for the health care community knowledge to date on the relationship between psychological health and cardiovascular health and disease and to suggest simple steps to screen for, and ultimately improve, the psychological health of patients with and at risk for CVD. Based on current study data, the following statements can be made: There are good data showing clear associations between psychological health and CVD and risk; there is increasing evidence that psychological health may be causally linked to biological processes and behaviors that contribute to and cause CVD; the preponderance of data suggest that interventions to improve psychological health can have a beneficial impact on cardiovascular health; simple screening measures can be used by health care providers for patients with or at risk for CVD to assess psychological health status; and consideration of psychological health is advisable in the evaluation and management of patients with or at risk for CVD.
