Abstract
BACKGROUND To improve phytol bioavailability, a novel method of magnetic stirring and high-pressure homogenization (HPH) combination was used to prepare zein/fucoidan-coated phytol nanoliposomes (P-NL-ZF). The characterization, the simulated in vitro digestion, and the antioxidant activity of these phytol nanoliposomes from the different processes have been studied. RESULTS Based on the results of dynamic light scattering (DLS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis, P-NL-ZF prepared through the combination of magnetic stirring and HPH exhibited superior encapsulation efficiency at 76.19% and demonstrated exceptional physicochemical stability under a series of conditions, including storage, pH, and ionic in comparison to single method. It was further confirmed that P-NL-ZF by magnetic stirring and HPH displayed a uniform distribution and regular shape through transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis showed that electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding were the primary driving forces for the formation of composite nanoliposomes. Additionally, an in vitro digestion study revealed that multilayer composite nanoliposomes displayed significant and favorable slow-release properties (58.21%) under gastrointestinal conditions compared with traditional nanoliposomes (82.36%) and free phytol (89.73%). The assessments of chemical and cell-based antioxidant activities demonstrated that the coating of zein/fucoidan on phytol nanoliposomes resulted in enhanced effectiveness in scavenging activity of ABTS free radical and hydroxyl radical and mitigating oxidative damage to HepG2 cells. CONCLUSION Based on our studies, the promising delivery carrier of zein/fucoidan-coated nanoliposomes is contributed to the encapsulation of hydrophobic natural products and enhancement of their biological activity. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a non-flavonoid polyphenolic compound with numerous functional properties, such as anticancer, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, anti-obesity and more. However, resveratrol's poor solubility within aqueous media and low stability usually lead to compromised bioavailability, ultimately limiting its uptake and applications. Nanodelivery technologies have been studied intensively due to their potential in effectively improving resveratrol properties, thereby providing promising solutions for enhancing the bioavailability of resveratrol. Thus, this article aimed to review the recent advances of resveratrol nanodelivery systems, specifically on the types of nanodelivery systems, the corresponding preparation principles, advantages, as well as potential limitations associated. Meanwhile, studies have also found that coupled with nanodelivery systems, the functional properties of resveratrol could trigger apoptosis in cancer cells and inflammatory cells through various signaling pathways. Therefore, this article will also lead into discussions on the application aspects of resveratrol nanodelivery systems, emphasizing toward the fields of biomedical and food sciences. Potential pitfalls of resveratrol nanodelivery systems, such as issues with toxicity and target release, as well as outlooks regarding resveratrol nanodelivery systems are included in the Conclusion section, in the hope to provide insights for relevant future research.

Abstract
The mesocarp (albedo) of passion fruit is considered a waste product but rich in soluble fibers, especially pectins. Biological activity and health benefits of pectins have recently emerged, especially in colorectal cancer and attenuating inflammation. Pectin conventional extraction often uses mineral acids, which can be hazardous to the environment, and alternatives can be costly. Here, we assessed a high-temperature and pressure method to extract pectin from the passion fruit albedo and evaluated the differences from the water-soluble fractions extracted. HPSEC, HPAEC, FTIR-ATR, and HSQC-NMR were performed to identify and confirm the highly methylated homogalacturonan structures. The heat-modified samples showed a decreased molecular size compared to the untreated sample. Colorectal cancer cell lines showed reduced viability after being treated with different doses of modified samples, with two of them, LW-MP3 and 4, showing the most potent effects. All samples were detected inside cells by immunofluorescence assay. It was observed that LW-MP3 and 4 upregulated the p53 protein, indicating cell-cycle arrest and the cleaved caspase-9 in one of the cell lines, with LW-MP4 enhancing cell death by apoptosis. Since the modified samples were composed of hydrolyzed homogalacturonans, those probably were the responsible structures for these anti-cancer effects.

Abstract
Glioma is one of the most severe central nervous systems (CNS)-specific tumors, with rapidly growing malignant glial cells accounting for roughly half of all brain tumors and having a poor survival rate ranging from 12 to 15 months. Despite being the most often used technique for glioma therapy, conventional chemotherapy suffers from low permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-brain tumor barrier (BBTB) to anticancer drugs. When it comes to nanocarriers, liposomes are thought of as one of the most promising nanocarrier systems for glioma treatment. However, owing to BBB tight junctions, non-targeted liposomes, which passively accumulate in most cancer cells primarily via the increased permeability and retention effect (EPR), would not be suitable for glioma treatment. The surface modification of liposomes with various active targeting ligands has shown encouraging outcomes in the recent times by allowing various chemotherapy drugs to pass across the BBB and BBTB and enter glioma cells. This review article introduces by briefly outlining the landscape of glioma, its classification, and some of the pathogenic causes. Further, it discusses major barriers for delivering drugs to glioma such as the BBB, BBTB, and tumor microenvironment. It further discusses modified liposomes such as long-acting circulating liposomes, actively targeted liposomes, stimuli responsive liposomes. Finally, it highlighted the limitations of liposomes in the treatment of glioma and the various actively targeted liposomes undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of glioma.

Abstract
In this paper, the effects of extrusion, ultrasound on physicochemical properties of liposomes were studied, and the liposomes were prepared by ethanol injection combined with extrusion-ultrasound. In addition, the quality of PhGs lips, pectin-coated PhGs lips (P-lips) and chitosan-coated PhGs lips (C-lips) was evaluated by the average particle size, encapsulation efficiency (EE) and other indicators, which indicated that the nanoparticles had been successfully prepared. Compared with extrusion or ultrasonic operation alone, the EEs of ethanol injection combined with extrusion-ultrasonic increased by 8 % and 18 % respectively. Subsequently, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and DSC thermal analysis showed that PhGs in PhGs lips may produce hydrogen bonding forces with phospholipids, and pectin and chitosan in P-lips and C-lips were not only coated on the surface of PhGs lips, but also might have some interaction between them. Cell experiments showed that PhGs lips, P-lips and C-lips can effectively improve the bioavailability of PhGs. In addition, the storage stability of P-lips and C-lips was not significantly improved compared to PhGs lips, but their digestive stability was significantly improved, and the final retention rate in simulated intestinal fluid was about 25 % higher than that of PhGs lips.

Abstract
The intense bitterness of quercetin poses a challenge to its utilization in the food industry. To address this issue, three anionic polysaccharides (carrageenan, pectin, and trehalose) were individually incorporated to fabricate polysaccharide-coated liposome nanocarriers. Electronic tongue analysis revealed a significant decreasing bitterness value (10.34 ± 0.07 mV, sensory score 1.8 ± 0.2, taste weak bitter) in quercetin-loaded nanoliposomes, compared with the bitterness value of quercetin aqueous solution (14 ± 0.01 mV, sensory score 7.3 ± 0.3, taste strong bitter). Furthermore, the polysaccharide-coated nanoliposomes exhibited an even greater capacity to mask the bitterness of quercetin, with carrageenan coated nanoliposomes demonstrating the most pronounced effect. The superior bitter masking ability of carrageenan coated nanoliposomes can be attributed to its high charge and viscosity. In sensory evaluations, gummy incorporated with carrageenan-coated nanoliposomes received the highest ratings, exhibiting enhanced overall palatability and antioxidant activity. This study offers insights into expanding the use of bitter nutrients in food applications and paves the way for more appealing and healthful food products.

Abstract
Nanocarriers have emerged as a promising class of nanoscale materials in the fields of drug delivery and biomedical applications. Their unique properties, such as high surface area- tovolume ratios and enhanced permeability and retention effects, enable targeted delivery of therapeutic agents to specific tissues or cells. However, the inherent instability of nanocarriers poses significant challenges to their successful application. This review highlights the importance of nanocarrier stability in biomedical applications and its impact on biocompatibility, targeted drug delivery, long shelf life, drug delivery performance, therapeutic efficacy, reduced side effects, prolonged circulation time, and targeted delivery. Enhancing nanocarrier stability requires careful design, engineering, and optimization of physical and chemical parameters. Various strategies and cutting-edge techniques employed to improve nanocarrier stability are explored, with a focus on their applications in drug delivery. By understanding the advances and challenges in nanocarrier stability, this review aims to contribute to the development and implementation of nanocarrier- based therapies in clinical settings, advancing the field of nanomedicine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX) plays a vital role in response to abiotic stress through modulating the antioxidant enzyme activities. Nevertheless, the biological function of the CKX gene family has yet to be reported in cotton. RESULT In this study, a total of 27 GhCKXs were identified by the genome-wide investigation and distributed across 18 chromosomes. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that CKX genes were clustered into four clades, and most gene expansions originated from segmental duplications. The CKXs gene structure and motif analysis displayed remarkably well conserved among the four groups. Moreover, the cis-acting elements related to the abiotic stress, hormones, and light response were identified within the promoter regions of GhCKXs. Transcriptome data and RT-qPCR showed that GhCKX genes demonstrated higher expression levels in various tissues and were involved in cotton's abiotic stress and phytohormone response. The protein-protein interaction network indicates that the CKX family probably participated in redox regulation, including oxidoreduction or ATP levels, to mediate plant growth and development. Functionally identified via virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) found that the GhCKX14 gene improved drought resistance by modulating the antioxidant-related activitie. CONCLUSIONS In this study, the CKX gene family members were analyzed by bioinformatics, and validates the response of GhCKX gene to various phytohormone treatment and abiotic stresses. Our findings established the foundation of GhCKXs in responding to abiotic stress and GhCKX14 in regulating drought resistance in cotton.

Abstract
Astaxanthin (AST) has outstanding antioxidant and anti-inflammation bioactivities, but the low biocompatibility and stability limit its application in foods. In this study, N-succinyl-chitosan (NSC)-coated AST polyethylene glycol (PEG)-liposomes were constructed to enhance the biocompatibility, stability, and intestinal-targeted migration of AST. The AST NSC/PEG-liposomes were uniform in size, had larger particles, greater encapsulation efficiency, and better storage, pH, and temperature stability than the AST PEG-liposomes. AST NSC/PEG-liposomes exerted stronger antibacterial and antioxidant activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus than AST PEG-liposomes. The NSC coating not only protects AST PEG-liposomes from gastric acid but also prolongs the retention and sustained release of AST NSC/PEG-liposomes depending on the intestinal pH. Moreover, caco-2 cellular uptake studies showed that AST NSC/PEG-liposomes had higher cellular uptake efficiency than AST PEG-liposomes. And AST NSC/PEG-liposomes were taken up by caco-2 cells through clathrin mediated endocytic, macrophage pathways and paracellular transport pathway. These results further proved that AST NSC/PEG-liposomes delayed the release and promoted the intestinal absorption of AST. Hence, AST PEG-liposomes coated with NSC could potentially be used as an efficient delivery system for therapeutic AST.

Abstract
Nanoliposome is an effective delivery system for polyphenols, whereas it always suffers from low electrostatic stability and oxidation of lipid membranes. Here, different charged anionic polysaccharides including carrageenan (-62.67 ± 1.85 mV), trehalose (-20.73 ± 1.42 mV), and pectin (-4.47 ± 0.38 mV) were used as coating material to improve the stability of nanoliposomes. Results showed that carrageenan coating greatly inhibited aggregation and fusion of nanoliposome. The coating of the higher charged polysaccharides produced the more hydrogen bonds and made the inner chains of lipid molecules more compact, thus improving the rigidity of the membrane and thermal stability. In addition, the polysaccharide coating effectively reduced the lateral diffusion within the membrane and the propagation rate of oxidation reaction. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of anionic polysaccharides with different charges on coated nanoliposomes, provide reference for the delivery of quercetin.

Abstract
Nanodrug delivery systems have been widely used in cancer treatment. Among these, liposomal drug carriers have gained considerable attention due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low toxicity. However, conventional liposomes have several shortcomings, such as poor stability, rapid clearance, aggregation, fusion, degradation, hydrolysis, and oxidation of phospholipids. Polysaccharides are natural polymers of biological origin that exhibit structural stability, excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, flexibility, non-immunogenicity, low toxicity, and targetability. Therefore, they represent a promising class of polymers for the modification of the surface properties of liposomes to overcome their shortcomings. In addition, polysaccharides can be readily combined with other materials to develop new composite materials. Hence, they represent the optimal choice for liposomal modification to improve pharmacokinetics and clinical utility. Polysaccharide-coated liposomes exhibit better stability, drug release kinetics, and cellular uptake than conventional liposomes. The oncologic application of polysaccharide-coated liposomes has become a research hotspot. We summarize the preparation, physicochemical properties, and antineoplastic effects of polysaccharide-coated liposomes to facilitate antitumor drug development.

Abstract
Nanoliposome encapsulation combined with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) surface decoration was employed to improve physicochemical stability and oral bioavailability of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Different nanoliposome systems including ALA-loaded nanoliposomes (ALA-NLs) and CMCS-coated ALA-NLs (CMCS-ALA-NLs) were characterized through dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The results showed that CMCS-ALA-NLs had good encapsulation efficiency of 79% and layer formation with nanosized spherical carrier. The physicochemical stability of CMCS-ALA-NLs was better than that of ALA-NLs. CMCS-ALA-NLs were able to regulate the release of ALA in a simulated gastrointestinal environment. In vivo testing found that ALA concentration of CMCS-ALA-NLs had an area under the curve of 1.32, which was 1.28 times higher than that of ALA-NLs and 2 times higher than that of ALA-emulsion. The absorption of ALA was improved by CMCS-ALA-NLs. It suggested that CMCS-coated nanoliposomes should be an available delivery strategy for transporting ALA.

Abstract
Liposomes carry various compounds with applications in pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic fields, and the administration route is especially parenteral, oral, or transdermal. Liposomes are used to preserve and release the internal components, thus maintaining the properties of the compounds, the stability and shelf life of the encapsulated products, and their functional benefits. The main problem in obtaining liposomes at the industrial level is their low stability due to fragile phospholipid membranes. To increase the stability of liposomes, phospholipid bilayers have been modified or different coating materials have been developed and studied, both for liposomes with applications in the pharmaceutical field and liposomes in the food field. In the cosmetic field, liposomes need no additional coating because the liposomal formulation is intended to have a fast penetration into the skin. The aim of this review is to provide current knowledge regarding physical and chemical factors that influence stability, coating materials for liposomes with applications in the pharmaceutical and food fields to increase the stability of liposomes containing various sensitive compounds, and absorption of the liposomes and commercial liposomal products obtained through various technologies available on the market.

Abstract
Due to the unstable chemical properties and poor water solubility of carotenoids, their processing adaptation and oral bioavailability are poor, limiting their application in hydrophilic food systems. Lipid-biomacromolecular compounds can be excellent carriers for carotenoid delivery by taking full advantage of the solubilization of lipids to non-polar nutrients and the water dispersion and gastrointestinal controlled release properties of biomacromolecules. This paper reviewed the research progress of lipid-biomacromolecular compounds as encapsulation and delivery carriers of carotenoids and summarized the material selection and preparation methods for biomacromolecular compounds. By considering the interaction between the two, this paper briefly discussed the effect of these compounds on carotenoid water solubility, stability, and bioavailability, emphasizing their delivery effect on carotenoids. Finally, various challenges and future trends of lipid-biomacromolecular compounds as carotenoid delivery carriers were discussed, providing new insight into efficient loading and delivery of carotenoids.

Abstract
Oregano essential oil (OEO) possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cancer-suppressive properties. Enterococcus faecalis is a foodborne opportunistic pathogen that can be found in nature and the food processing industry. The goal of this investigation was to explore the antimicrobial action and mechanism of OEO against E. faecalis, inactivation action of OEO on E. faecalis in mature biofilms, and its application in chicken breast. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of OEO against E. faecalis strains (ATCC 29212 and nine isolates) ranged from 0.25 to 0.50 μL/mL. OEO therapy reduced intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, caused cell membrane hyperpolarization, increased the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and elevated extracellular malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations. Furthermore, OEO treatment diminished cell membrane integrity and caused morphological alterations in the cells. In biofilms on stainless-steel, OEO showed effective inactivation activity against E. faecalis. OEO reduced the number of viable cells, cell viability and exopolysaccharides in the biofilm, as well as destroying its structure. Application of OEO on chicken breast results in a considerable reduction in E. faecalis counts and pH values, in comparison to control samples. These findings suggest that OEO could be utilized as a natural antibacterial preservative and could effectively control E. faecalis in food manufacturing.

Abstract
Dexamethasone is one of the most often used corticosteroid drugs for sensorineural hearing loss treatment, and is used either by intratympanic injection or through systemic delivery. In this study, a biopolymer lipid hybrid microcarrier was investigated for enhanced local drug delivery and sustained release at the round window membrane level of the middle ear for the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Dexamethasone-loaded and dexamethasone-free microparticles were prepared using biopolymers (polysaccharide and protein, pectin and bovine serum albumin, respectively) combined with lipid components (phosphatidylcholine and Dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide) in order to obtain a biopolymer–liposome hybrid system, with a complex structure combining to enhance performance in terms of physical and chemical stability. The structure of the microparticles was evaluated by FTIR, XRD, thermal analysis, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The encapsulation efficiency determination and the in vitro Dexamethasone release study were performed using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The high value of encapsulation efficiency and the results of the release study indicated six days of sustained release, encouraging us to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicity of Dexamethasone-loaded microparticles and their influence on the cytotoxicity induced by Cisplatin on auditory HEI-OC1 cells. The results show that the new particles are able to protect the inner ear sensory cells.

Abstract
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the impact of their dietary choices on the environment, animal welfare, and health, which is causing many of them to adopt more plant-based diets. For this reason, many sectors of the food industry are reformulating their products to contain more plant-based ingredients. This article describes recent research on the formation and application of nano-enabled colloidal delivery systems formulated from plant-based ingredients, such as polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and phospholipids. These delivery systems include nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanoliposomes, nanophytosomes, and biopolymer nanoparticles. The composition, size, structure, and charge of the particles in these delivery systems can be manipulated to create novel or improved functionalities, such as improved robustness, higher optical clarity, controlled release, and increased bioavailability. There have been major advances in the design, assembly, and application of plant-based edible nanoparticles within the food industry over the past decade or so. As a result, there are now a wide range of different options available for creating delivery systems for specific applications. In the future, it will be important to establish whether these formulations can be produced using economically viable methods and provide the desired functionality in real-life applications.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RES) is a stilbene group of natural polyphenolic compounds in trees, peanuts, and grapes. RES is revealed with anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective effects. Though it is proven with prominent therapeutic activity, low aqueous solubility, poor bioavailability, and short half-life had hindered its use to exploit the potential. Also, the first-pass metabolism and undergoing enterohepatic recirculation are obscure in the minds of researchers for their in vitro studies. Many approaches have been investigated and shown promising results in manipulating their physicochemical properties to break this barrier. Nanocarriers are one of them to reduce the first-pass metabolism and to overcome other hurdles. This article reviews and highlights such encapsulation technologies. Nanoencapsulated RES improves in vitro antioxidant effect, and this review also highlights the new strategies and the concept behind how resveratrol can be handled and implemented with better therapeutic efficacy.

Abstract
Galectin-3 is the only chimeric representative of the galectin family. Although galectin-3 has ubiquitous regulatory and physiological effects, there is a great number of pathological environments where galectin-3 cooperatively participates. Pectin is composed of different chemical structures, such as homogalacturonans, rhamnogalacturonans, and side chains. The study of pectin's major structural aspects is fundamental to predicting the impact of pectin on human health, especially regarding distinct molecular modulation. One of the explored pectin's biological activities is the possible galectin-3 protein regulation. The present review focuses on revealing the structure/function relationship of pectins, their fragments, and their biological effects. The discussion highlighted by this review shows different effects described within in vitro and in vivo experimental models, with interesting and sometimes contradictory results, especially regarding galectin-3 interaction. The review demonstrates that pectins are promissory food-derived molecules for different bioactive functions. However, galectin-3 inhibition by pectin had been stated in literature before, although it is not a fully understood, experimentally convincing, and commonly agreed issue. It is demonstrated that more studies focusing on structural analysis and its relation to the observed beneficial effects, as well as substantial propositions of cause and effect alongside robust data, are needed for different pectin molecules' interactions with galectin-3.

Abstract
Schizochytrium sp. is one of the most promising marine oleaginous microorganisms for industrial production of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In this study, the exogenous supplementation of 1 mM sesamol to the fermentation medium effectively prevented the peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the fermentation process, which thereby significantly increasing the lipid and DHA yield by 53.52% and 78.30%, respectively. The addition of sesamol also increased the total antioxidant capacity of cells and induce the gene expression of polyketide synthase and antioxidant enzyme system. Moreover, the supply of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate was regulated by sesamol by inhibiting the malic enzyme activity and promoting the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity. Finally, fed-batch fermentation showed that the addition of sesamol significantly enhanced the DHA yield by 90.76%. This study provides an important reference for enhancing the DHA productivity of Schizochytrium sp. in industrial fermentation.

Abstract
Over thousands of years, natural bioactive compounds derived from plants (bioactive phytocompounds, BPCs) have been used worldwide to address human health issues. Today, they are a significant resource for drug discovery in the development of modern medicines. Although many BPCs have promising biological activities, most of them cannot be effectively utilized in drugs for therapeutic applications because of their inherent limitations of low solubility, structural instability, short half-life, poor bioavailability, and non-specific distribution to organs. Researchers have utilized emerging nanoformulation (NF) technologies to overcome these limitations as they have demonstrated great potential to improve the solubility, stability, and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of BPCs. This review exemplifies NF strategies for resolving the issues associated with BPCs and summarizes recent advances in their preclinical and clinical applications for imaging and therapy. This review also highlights how innovative NF technologies play a leading role in next-generation BPC-based drug development for extended therapeutic applications. Finally, this review discusses the opportunities to take BPCs with meaningful clinical impact from bench to bedside and extend the patent life of BPC-based medicines with new formulations or application to new adjacent diseases beyond the primary drug indications. Natural bioactive phytocompounds derived from plants have been used worldwide to address human health issues. However, most of them cannot be effectively utilized in drugs for therapeutic applications because of their inherent limitations. Nanoformulation approach has recently been underlined as an emerging pharmaceutical strategy to overcome the intrinsic drawbacks of bioactive phytocompounds. Various types of nanoformulation and their up-to-date applications for targeted delivery, phototherapy, and imaging are reviewed. Finally, their clinical implications for the repurposing of bioactive phytocompounds are deliberated.

Abstract
Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) have been proven as an easy energy source and active ingredient to prevent obesity and other metabolic disorders. However, the inherent hydrophobic nature of MCFAs causes poor aqueous solubility and dissolution in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, thus limiting their applications in aqueous foods. To address these issues, a nutraceutical carrier system was developed by coating nanoliposomes with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) through a series of well-designed processes, including thin-film hydration, dynamic high pressure microfluidization (DHPM) and surface modification. Electron microscopy investigation reveals an obvious morphology evolution from the uncoated nanoliposomes (UC-LPs) to the final CMCS coated nanoliposomes (CMCS-LPs). Together with the FTIR results, it confirms the successful coating of CMCS. More importantly, the resultant CMCS-LPs have a more negatively charged surface with a ζ-potential value of around -18.5 mV, which helps to increase the stability by avoiding severe particle aggregation. Owing to the above benefits, the encapsulated MCFAs can be safely retained in a long storage period of 90 days at 4 °C and the new carrier system also exhibits a more sustained release of MCFAs in the GI fluid.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has a variety of biological activities, but exhibits poor stability and low bioavailability. In this study, EGCG bilosome was prepared and characterized, and its stability during different storage conditions (pH, NaCl concentration, and temperature) and in gastrointestinal fluid was evaluated and compared with liposomes and niosomes. Among them, EGCG niosomes had the highest pH stability, and the existence of sodium cholate reduced the stability of bilosomes in acidic medium. EGCG stability was significantly increased in the presence of salt ions (0-100 mM NaCl) and under different temperatures (25 °C, 37 °C) when delivered as niosomes and bilosomes. Retention rate of EGCG in bilosomes was 71.64 ± 4.05% after incubation in simulated intestinal fluid for 2 h, which was significantly higher than retention rate of EGCG liposomes (24.02 ± 3.95%) and niosomes (55.74 ± 6.85%), thus indicating greater gastrointestinal stability of EGCG bilosomes. Furthermore, bioavailability of EGCG encapsulated in bilosomes was improved by 1.98 times. Overall, these findings indicate that EGCG bilosomes, as a new delivery system, had great potential application as a means to improve stability and bioavailability of EGCG.

Abstract
Hollow nanoparticles are preferred over solid ones for their high loading capabilities, sustained release and low density. Hollow zein particles are susceptible to aggregation with a slight variation in the ionic strength, pH and temperature of the medium. This study was aimed to fabricate quercetin-loaded hollow zein particles with chitosan and pectin coating to improve their physicochemical stability. Quercetin as a model flavonoid had a loading efficiency and capacity of about 86–94% and 2.22–5.89%, respectively. Infrared and X-ray diffraction investigations revealed the interaction of quercetin with zein and the change in its physical state from crystalline to amorphous upon incorporation in the composite particles. The chitosan/pectin coating improved the stability of quercetin-loaded hollow zein particles against heat treatment, sodium chloride and in a wide range of pH. The complex coating protected quercetin that was encapsulated in hollow zein particles from free radicals in the aqueous medium and enhanced its DPPH radical scavenging ability. The entrapment of quercetin in the particles improved its storage and photochemical stability. The storage stability of entrapped quercetin was enhanced both at 25 and 45 °C in hollow zein particles coated with chitosan and pectin. Therefore, composite hollow zein particles fabricated with a combination of polysaccharides can expand their role in the encapsulation, protection and delivery of bioactive components.

Abstract
To protect walnut peptides from harsh external environments during their storage and digestion, proliposomes loaded with walnut peptides were fabricated using sucrose, trehalose, and mannitol as carriers and lyoprotectants. The physicochemical properties, environmental stability, antioxidant/antibacterial activities, and digestion in vitro of the proliposomes were evaluated. The freshly prepared liposomes were uniform in size, but the hydrated proliposomes showed a more uneven size distribution. The lyoprotectants helped maintain favorable liposome shape during lyophilization. Alongside the lyoprotectants, the walnut peptides further stabilized the lipid bilayer. Proliposomes encapsulation didn't impact the peptides' antioxidant activity. Furthermore, walnut peptides-loaded proliposomes exhibited antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The proliposomes were stable during gastric-phase digestion. The lyoprotectants changed the free fatty acid release behaviors of the proliposomes. These characteristics suggest potential applications for proliposomes as effective delivery systems for biopeptides in food stuffs, thereby protecting bioactivities during storage and passage through the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
The biological activity of neohesperidin (NH, a flavanone glycoside) is limited due to instability in the physiological environment. Thus, the current study aimed to explore the protective effect of NH-loaded pectin-chitosan decorated liposomes (P-CH-NH-NL) against palmitic acid (PA)-induced hepatic oxidative injury in L02 cells. The particles were characterized using DLS, TEM, HPLC, DSC, and cellular uptake study. Then, the protective effect of NH-loaded liposomal systems (NH-NLs) against PA-induced oxidative injury was evaluated in terms of cell viability study, intracellular ROS, superoxide ions (O2-), MMP, and cellular GSH determination. Our results exhibited that NH-NLs significantly lessened the PA-induced hepatic oxidative injury in L02 cells via decreasing ROS and O2- generation, reducing MMP collapse, and attenuating GSH reduction, whereas the free NH samples were ineffective. Furthermore, the coated NH-NLs were more effective than that of uncoated nanoliposome. Overall, our study confirmed that P-CH-NH-NL was capable of reducing PA-induced hepatic oxidative injury. Therefore, the pectin-chitosan decorated nanoliposome can be considered as an efficient delivery system for enhancing cellular uptake of lipophilic compound with controlled release and greater biological activity.

Abstract
Nanocellulose is a promising "green" nanomaterial that has recently gained scientific interest because of its excellent characteristics, such as less risks of toxicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, recyclability, and tunable surface features. Initially, three nanocellulose types (i.e., bacterial nanocellulose, nanocrystals, and nanofibers) and their potential biotechnological production routes have been discussed in detail. Contemporary studies are discussed in the development of nanocellulose aerogels, responsive hydrogels, injectable hydrogels/implants, and magnetic nanocellulose. Moreover, the development of hydrogels and potential crosslinking agents for the induction of desired properties has been described. Studies have revealed that the release kinetics of nanocellulosic gels/hydrogels varies from few minutes to several days depending on the given physicochemical conditions. However, such systems provide sustained drug release properties, so they are considered "smart" systems. Recent studies on controlled drug delivery systems have demonstrated their considerable potential for the next-generation transport of therapeutic drugs to target sites via various administration routes. This review presents the selection of appropriate sources and processing methodologies for the development of target nanocellulose types. It explains the potential challenges and opportunities and recommends future research directions about the smart delivery of therapeutic drugs.

Abstract
Conventional liposomes still face many challenges associated with the poor physical and chemical stability, considerable loss of encapsulated cargo, lack of stimulus responsiveness, and rapid elimination from blood circulation. Integration of versatile functional biopolymers has emerged as an attractive strategy to overcome the limitation of usage of liposomes. This review comprehensively summarizes the most recent studies (2015-2020) and their challenges aiming at the exploration of biopolymer-liposome hybrid systems, including surface-modified liposomes, biopolymer-incorporated liposomes, guest-in-cyclodextrin-in-liposome, liposome-in-hydrogel, liposome-in-film, and liposome-in-nanofiber. The physicochemical principles and key technical information underlying the combined strategies for the fabrication of polymeric liposomes, the advantages and limitations of each of the systems, and the stabilization mechanisms are discussed through various case studies. Special emphasis is directed toward the synergistic efficiencies of biopolymers and phospholipid bilayers on encapsulation, protection, and controlled delivery of bioactives (e.g., vitamins, carotenoids, phenolics, peptides, and other health-related compounds) for the biomedical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and functional food applications. The major challenges, opportunities, and possible further developments for future studies are also highlighted.

Abstract
Erianin (ER), a dietary compound extracted from Dendrobium, a traditional Chinese medicinal edible herb, is well recognized for its potential anti-cancer activity. Nevertheless, its limitations, regarding its complex isolation procedure, low yield and low water solubility, limit large scale application. Combinatorial therapeutic regimen that combines several drugs to target different pathways in a characteristically synergistic manner at lower doses of drugs proved effective in several diseases treatment. Besides, new knowledge aimed at improving drug delivery into the intracellular environment is essential. In this study, ER was assessed for its cytotoxic effect in combination with doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX·HCl) against breast cancer cells. Drug synergy was calculated by using combination index (CI) index and we discovered that they had positive effects. To ensure uniform delivery of both drugs to cells for a desired synergistic action, a dual drug loaded liposomes was developed using thin-film dispersion, and coated by a layer of folate-chitosan. Cytotoxicity and cell proliferation based assays revealed the increase of cell inhibition rate by more than 30% compared with free drugs. Fluorescence imaging revealed that liposomes can aid faster drugs accumulate in cancer cells. The study presented a novel strategy for the treatment of breast cancer.

Abstract
In this work, cinnamaldehyde-loaded liposomes decorated with different concentrations of chitosan (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mg/mL) were prepared and their physical and antibacterial properties were evaluated. The results showed that the physical decoration of chitosan improved the encapsulation efficiency and storage stability of the liposomes. Liposomes decorated with chitosan at the concentration of 0.25 to 4 mg/mL were able to achieve an obvious antibacterial efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus after only 10 min of incubation. The antibacterial efficiency of chitosan-decorated liposomes was still higher than 90% after being stored for 28 d when the chitosan concentration was greater than 1 mg/mL. Besides, increasing the chitosan concentration significantly decreased the minimum inhibitory concentration of the liposomes. The comparison of the antibacterial activities and mechanisms of cinnamaldehyde-loaded liposomes decorated with chitosan at a concentration of 4 mg/mL (CH-CL), cinnamaldehyde-loaded liposomes (CL), cinnamaldehyde, and chitosan revealed that chitosan and cinnamaldehyde exerted a cumulative and synergistic bacteriostatic effect in the liposomes. This led to damage to the cell membrane integrity, causing cell death by inducing leakage of intracellular components. These results can potentially provide guidance for the preparation and application of natural preservatives with rapid and long-term bacteriostatic effects.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to improve the physicochemical stability of neohesperidin (NH) using nanoliposomal encapsulation in association with surface decoration strategy employing chitosan (CH) and pectin (P). Different nanoliposomal systems, i.e. NH-loaded nanoliposome (NH-NL), CH-coated NH-NL (CH-NH-NL), and P-coated CH-NH-NL (P-CH-NH-NL) were characterized through DLS, HPLC, TEM, and FTIR. The results confirmed good encapsulation efficiency (>90%) and successful layer formation with nano-sized and spherical carrier. Both CH-NL and P-CH-NL exhibited better physicochemical stability than NL under storage, thermal, pH, ionic, UV, oxidative, and serum conditions. In vitro mucin adsorption study revealed that CH-NL (60%) was more effective in mucoadhesion followed by P-CH-NL (46%) and NL (41%). Furthermore, P-CH-NL showed better performance in NH retention under different food simulants compared to CH-NH-NL and NH-NL, in which the release was mainly governed by the diffusion process. Thus, the P-CH conjugated nanoliposome could be a promising nano-carrier for neohesperidin.

Abstract
The possibility of combining the health benefits of kafirin and polyphenols and improving the bioavailability of resveratrol using hollow kafirin nanoparticles via gallic acid crosslinking was investigated. The size, morphology, charge state, loading efficiency, physicochemical stability, and redispersity after lyophilization of hollow resveratrol-loaded kafirin nanoparticles formed via gallic acid crosslinking were characterized and compared with their solid counterparts and those without crosslinking. The nanoparticles formed were anionic spheres with an average diameter of <100 nm when loading amounts of resveratrol were less than 20%. The hollow nanoparticles were homogenous and still achieved stable colloidal dispersion after lyophilization. The hollow nanoparticles crosslinked with gallic acid displayed stability against pancreatin and delayed release in stimulated digestion. The results suggested that hollow kafirin nanoparticles could be a favorable colloidal delivery system for incorporating resveratrol.

Abstract
Acquisition of a healthy lifestyle through diet has driven the food manufacturing industry to produce new food products with high nutritional quality. In this sense, consumption of bioactive compounds has been associated with a decreased risk of suffering chronic diseases. Nonetheless, due to their low solubility in aqueous matrices, high instability in food products during processing and preparation as well as poor bioavailability, the use of such compounds is sometimes limited. Recent advancements in encapsulation and protection of bioactive compounds has opened new possibilities for the development of novel food products. In this direction, the present review is attempting to describe encapsulation achievements, with special attention to nanostructured lipid-based delivery systems, i.e., nanoemulsions, multi-layer emulsions and liposomes. Functionality of bioactive compounds is directly associated with their bioavailability, which in turn is governed by several complex processes, including the passage through the gastrointestinal tract and transport to epithelial cells. Therefore, an overview of recent research on the properties of these nanostructured lipid-based delivery systems with a strong impact on the functionality of bioactive compounds will be also provided. Nanostructured lipid-based delivery systems might be used as a potential option to enhance the solubility, stability, absorption and, ultimately, functionality of bioactive compounds. Several studies have been performed in this line, modifying the composition of the nanostructures, such as the lipid-type or surfactants. Overall, influencing factors and strategies to improve the efficacy of encapsulated bioactive compounds within nanostructures have been successfully identified. This knowledge can be used to design effective targeted nanostructured lipid-based delivery systems for bioactive compounds. However, there is still a lack of information on food interactions, toxicity and long-term consumption of such nanostructures.

Abstract
Astaxanthin-loaded liposomes were prepared by a thin-film ultrasonic method, and the effects of the different membrane surface modifiers chitosan hydrochloride (CH) and lactoferrin (LF) on the physicochemical stability of the liposomes and bioaccessibility of astaxanthin were studied. Based on the negative charge characteristics of egg yolk lecithin, LF and CH with positive charge were assembled on the surface of liposomes by an electrostatic deposition method. The optimal concentrations of modifiers were determined by particle size, zeta potential and encapsulation efficiency. The interaction between the liposomes and the coatings was characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. The stability of astaxanthin in different systems (suspension and liposomes) was investigated, and its antioxidant capacity and bioaccessibility were determined. The results showed that both membrane surface modifications could interact with liposomes and protect astaxanthin from oxidation or heat degradation and enhance the antioxidant activity of the liposome, therefore membrane surface modification played an important role in stabilizing the lipid bilayer. At the same time, the encapsulated astaxanthin exhibited higher in vitro bioaccessibility than the free astaxanthin. CH and LF modified liposomes can be developed as formulations for encapsulation and delivery of functional ingredients, providing a theoretical basis for the development of new astaxanthin series products.

Abstract
Today, there is a rising demand and ongoing search for novel plant-derived phytochemicals in the cosmetic market owing to the growing consumer expectations worldwide for green and natural health products. Various plant ingredients, including polyphenols, oils, volatile oils, vitamins and other herbal extracts, have been extensively used in herbal cosmetics. Recent advances in encapsulation technologies have greatly improved their chemical stability, biocompatibility, skin permeability and dermocosmetic efficiency when applied topically. This comprehensive review summarizes the up-to-date information on encapsulated plant ingredients tailored for dermocosmetic application with a focus on the development of novel delivery systems. An overview of the commonly used techniques for carrier characterization, performance-related properties and toxicological evaluation is also included, which might provide guidance for researchers to select or develop appropriate assay systems.
