Antioxidant and antibacterial chitosan film with tea polyphenols-mediated green synthesis silver nanoparticle via a novel one-pot method

Ultra-small gold nanoparticles embedded cyclodextrin metal-organic framework composite membrane to achieve antibacterial and humidity-responsive functions

Cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (CD-MOF) is an edible and porous material that can serve as a template for synthesizing small-sized metal nanoparticles. However, its highly hydrophilic nature has limited its wider application. Herein, ultra-small gold nanoparticles (U-AuNPs) were loaded into CD-MOF to produce a composite material Au@CD-MOF. The CD-MOF was utilized as a template to control the size of the AuNPs. The synthesized Au@CD-MOF was easily dispersible in aqueous medium and its released U-AuNPs exhibited effective water dispersion stability within 120 days. Additionally, compared to gold nanoparticles prepared using traditional methods (T-AuNPs), the U-AuNPs exhibited superior antibacterial properties. Furthermore, hydrophilic Au@CD-MOF was incorporated into a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix (Au@CD-MOF/PDMS) to achieve a humidity-responsive antibacterial function. The composite membrane exhibited remarkable responsiveness to humidity, showing almost no release of U-AuNPs at 0 % humidity. However, it exhibited approximately 89 % release within 1 h, and complete release of U-AuNPs was observed within 4 h under 100 % humidity. These findings highlight the successful preparation of a humidity-responsive antibacterial composite membrane, which has great potential applications in various scenarios, particularly in the field of antibacterial food packaging.

Application of seed mucilage as functional biopolymer in meat product processing and preservation

Meat products consumption is rising globally, but concerns about sustainability, fat content, and shelf life. Synthetic additives and preservatives used for extending the shelf life of meat often carry health and environmental drawbacks. Seed mucilage, natural polysaccharides, possesses unique functional properties like water holding, emulsifying, and film forming, offering potential alternatives in meat processing and preservation. This study explores the application of seed mucilage from diverse sources (e.g., flaxseed, psyllium, basil) in various meat and meat products processing and preservation. Mucilage's water-holding and emulsifying properties can potentially bind fat and decrease the overall lipid content in meat and meat-based products. Moreover, antimicrobial and film-forming properties of mucilage can potentially inhibit microbial growth and reduce oxidation, extending the shelf life. This review emphasizes the advantages of incorporating mucilage into processing and coating strategies for meat and seafood products.

A review of starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend film: A potential replacement for traditional plastic-based food packaging film

In recent years, the development of environmentally friendly packaging materials using biodegradable polymers has emerged as a key challenge for scientists and consumers in response to resource depletion and environmental issues caused by plastic packaging materials. Starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are being recognized as excellent candidates for producing biodegradable food packaging films. Polymer blending has emerged as a practical approach to overcome the limitations of biopolymer films by developing films with unique properties and enhancing overall performance. This review briefly introduces the molecular structure and properties of starch and PVA, summarizes the common preparation methods and properties of starch/PVA blend films, and focuses on different strategies used to enhance starch/PVA blend films, including nanoparticles, plant extracts, and cross-linking agents. Additionally, this study summarizes the application of starch/PVA blend films as active and smart packaging in food preservation systems. This study demonstrates that starch and PVA blends have potential in manufacturing biodegradable food films with excellent properties due to their excellent compatibility and intermolecular interactions, and can be used as packaging films for a variety of foods to extend their shelf life.

Pickering nanoemulsion loaded with eugenol contributed to the improvement of konjac glucomannan film performance

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is becoming a very potential food packaging material due to its good film-forming properties and stability. However, KGM film has several shortcomings such as low mechanical strength, strong water absorption, and poor self-antibacterial performance, which limits its application. Therefore, in order to enhance the mechanical and functional properties of KGM film, this study prepared Pickering nanoemulsion loaded with eugenol and added it to the KGM matrix to explore the improvement effect of Pickering nanoemulsion on KGM film properties. Compared to pure KGM film and eugenol directly added film, the mechanical strength of Pickering-KGM film was significantly improved due to the establishment of ample hydrogen bonding interactions between the β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex system and KGM. Pickering-KGM film had significant antioxidant capacity than pure KGM film and eugenol directly added KGM film (eugenol-KGM film) (~3.21 times better than KGM film, ~0.51 times better than eugenol-KGM film). In terms of antibacterial activity, Pickering-KGM film had good inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans, and raspberry preservation experiment showed that the shelf life of the Pickering-KGM film could be extended to about 6 days. To sum up, this study developed a novel means to improve the film performance and provide a new insight for the development and application of food packaging film.

Nanometals incorporation into active and biodegradable chitosan films

This study investigates the effects of incorporating ZnO, TiO2, and colloidal Ag nanoparticles on the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and physical properties of biodegradable chitosan films. The research focuses on addressing the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions that offer efficient food preservation while mitigating environmental concerns. In this investigation, the physical properties including thickness, water content, solubility, swelling degree, tensile strength, and elasticity of the chitosan films were examined. Additionally, the samples were analyzed for total polyphenol content, antimicrobial activity, and antioxidant capacity. Notably, the incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles led to the lowest water content and highest strength values among the tested films. Conversely, the addition of colloidal Ag nanoparticles resulted in films with the highest antioxidant capacities (DPPH: 32.202 ± 1.631 %). Remarkably, antimicrobial tests revealed enhanced activity with the inclusion of colloidal silver nanoparticles, yet the most potent antimicrobial properties were observed in films containing ZnO (E.coli: 2.0 ± 0.0 mm; MRSA: 2.0 ± 0.5 mm). The findings of this study hold significant implications for the advancement of edible biodegradable films, offering potential for more efficient food packaging solutions that address environmental sustainability concerns. By elucidating the effects of nanoparticle incorporation on film properties, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding sustainable packaging solutions in the food industry.

Synergistic Antimicrobial Glycyrrhizic Acid-Based Functional Biosensing Composite for Sensitive Glucose Monitoring and Collaborative Wound Healing

High glucose blood and bacterial infection remain major issues for the slow healing of diabetic wounds, so developing functional biosensing composite with excellent antibacterial and remarkable glucose response sensitivity is necessary and prospective. Herein, by in situ synthesis AgNPs on the surface of self-prepared PTIGA elastomers, PTIGA-AgNPs conductive composites are obtained with efficient synergistic antibacterial effect, excellent mechanical and self-healing properties. The strain of the composites can reach 1800%, and its self-healing efficiency exceeds 90% at 60 °C within 8 h. Both elastomers and composites represent excellent biocompatibility and the antibacterial rate against E. coli and S. aureus exceeded 90%. Moreover, the biosensor assembled from the conductive composites exhibits excellent glucose response sensitivity and stability, with a sensitivity coefficient of 0.518 mA mm-1 in the range of 0.2-3.6 × 10-3 m glucose concentration, as well as a low detection limit of 0.08 × 10-3 m. Furthermore, based on the remarkable antibacterial performance and bioactivity derived from GA, the composites reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory factors and promote the production of anti-inflammatory factors, and effectively promote the regeneration of skin and granulation tissue of wounds in a diabetic full-thickness skin defect model, demonstrating the enormous therapeutic potential in diabetic wound healing.

Safe and sustainable food packaging: Argemone albiflora mediated green synthesized silver-carrageenan nanocomposite films

Silver-Carrageenan (Ag/Carr) nanocomposite film for food packing application by the green method using Argemone albiflora leaf extract has been developed in this study. Different plant parts of Argemone albiflora (blue stem prickly poppy) are used all over the world for the treatment of microbial infections, jaundice, skin diseases etc. GC-MS analysis was used to examine the phytochemical found in the Argemone albiflora leaf extract which reduces the metal ions to nanoscale. The biopolymer employed in the synthesis of nanocomposite film was carrageenan, a natural carbohydrate (polysaccharide) extracted from edible red seaweeds. We developed a food packing that is biodegradable, eco-friendly, economical and free from harmful chemicals. These films possess better UV barrier and mechanical and antimicrobial properties with 1 mM AgNO3 solution. The presence of silver nanoparticles in the carrageenan matrix was evident from FESEM. The mechanical properties were analysed by a Universal testing machine (UTM) and different properties like water vapour permeability (WVP), moisture content (MC) and total soluble matter (TSM) important for food packing applications were also analysed. The antimicrobial properties of the synthesized film samples were studied against E. coli and S. aureus pathogenic bacteria. These films were employed for the storage of cottage cheese (dairy product) and strawberries (fruit). This packing increased the shelf life of the packed food effectively. Ag/Carr films are biodegradable within four weeks.

Multifunctional Ag2O/chitosan nanocomposites synthesized via sol-gel with enhanced antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties: A novel food packaging material

In this study, a single step in situ sol-gel method was used to syntheses nanocomposite films using chitosan (CS) as the basis material, with the addition of silver oxide nanoparticles (Ag2O) at several weight percentages (5 %, 10 %, and 15 % Ag2O/CS). The structural characteristics of Ag2O/CS films were investigated using a range of analytical techniques. The presence of the primary distinctive peaks of chitosan was verified using FTIR spectra analysis. However, a minor displacement was observed in these peaks due to the chemical interaction occurring with silver oxide molecules. XRD analysis demonstrated a significant increase in the crystallinity of chitosan when it interacted with metal oxide nanoparticles. Furthermore, it is believed that the interaction between silver oxide and the active binding sites of chitosan is responsible for the evenly dispersed clusters shown in the micrographs of the chitosan surface, as well as the random aggregations within the pores. EDS technique successfully identified the presence of distinctive silver signals within the nanocomposite material, indicating the successful absorption of silver into the surface of the polymer. The developed Ag2O/CS nanocomposite showed promising antibacterial activity against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus). Also, Ag2O/CS nanocomposite exhibited marked antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, and Penicillium chrysogenum. The antioxidant activity of the developed nanocomposite films was studied by ABTS radical scavenging. The highest antioxidant and antibacterial properties were achieved by including 15 % silver oxide into the chitosan. Therefore, our finding indicate that chitosan‑silver oxide nanocomposites exhibits significant potential as a viable material for application in several sectors of the food packaging industry.

Confining the Growth of AgNPs onto Epigallocatechin Gallate-Decorated Zein Nanoparticles for Constructing Potent Protein-Based Antibacterial Nanocomposites

Sliver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have attracted tremendous interest as an alternative to commercially available antibiotics due to their low microbial resistance and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, AgNPs are highly reactive and unstable and are susceptible to fast oxidation. Synthesizing stable and efficient AgNPs using green chemistry principles remains a major challenge. To address this issue, we establish a facile route to form AgNP-doped zein nanoparticle core-satellite superstructures with ultralow minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). In brief, polyphenol surface-functionalization of zein nanoparticles was performed, and the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) layer on zein nanoparticles served as a reducing-cum-stabilizing agent. We used EGCG-decorated zein nanoparticles (ZE) as a template to direct the nucleation and growth of AgNPs to develop metallized hybrid nanoparticles (ZE-Ag). The highly monodispersed core-satellite nanoparticles (∼150 nm) decorated with ∼4.9 nm AgNPs were synthesized successfully. The spatial restriction of EGCG by zein nanoparticles confined the nucleation and growth of AgNPs only on the surface of the particles, which prevented the formation of entangled clusters of polyphenols and AgNPs and concomitantly inhibited the coalescence and oxidation of AgNPs. Thus, this strategy improved the effective specific surface area of AgNPs, and as a result, ZE-Ag efficiently killed the indicator bacteria, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) after 20 min of incubation, with MBCs of 2 and 4 μg/mL, respectively. This situation indicated that as-prepared core-satellite nanoparticles possessed potent short-term sterilization capability. Moreover, the simulated wound infection model also confirmed the promising application of ZE-Ag as an efficient antimicrobial composite. This work provides new insights into the synthesis and emerging application of AgNPs in food preservation, packaging, biomedicine, and catalysis.

Unlocking sustainable solutions: Nanocellulose innovations for enhancing the shelf life of fruits and vegetables - A comprehensive review

Regarding food security and waste reduction, preserving fruits and vegetables is a vital problem. This comprehensive study examines the innovative potential of coatings and packaging made of nanocellulose to extend the shelf life of perishable foods. The distinctive merits of nanocellulose, which is prepared from renewable sources, include exceptional gas barrier performance, moisture retention, and antibacterial activity. As a result of these merits, it is a good option for reducing food spoilage factors such as oxidation, desiccation, and microbiological contamination. Nanocellulose not only enhances food preservation but also complies with industry-wide environmental objectives. This review explores the many facets of nanocellulose technology, from its essential characteristics to its use in the preservation of fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, it deals with vital issues including scalability, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory constraints. While the use of nanocellulose in food preservation offers fascinating potential, it also wants to be cautiously careful to assure affordability, effectiveness, and safety. To fully use the potential of nanocellulose and advance the sustainability plan in the food business, collaboration between scientists, regulatory bodies, and industry stakeholders is important as we stand on the cusp of a revolutionary era in food preservation.

Natural Extracts for Antibacterial Applications

Bacteria-induced epidemics and infectious diseases are seriously threatening the health of people around the world. In addition, antibiotic therapy has been inducing increasingly more serious bacterial resistance, which makes it urgent to develop new treatment strategies to combat bacteria, including multidrug-resistant bacteria. Natural extracts displaying antibacterial activity and good biocompatibility have attracted much attention due to greater concerns about the safety of synthetic chemicals and emerging drug resistance. These antibacterial components can be isolated and utilized as antimicrobials, as well as transformed, combined, or wrapped with other substances by using modern assistive technologies to fight bacteria synergistically. This review summarizes recent advances in natural extracts from three kinds of sources-plants, animals, and microorganisms-for antibacterial applications. This work discusses the corresponding antibacterial mechanisms and the future development of natural extracts in antibacterial fields.

Effect of tea polyphenols on chitosan packaging for food preservation: Physicochemical properties, bioactivity, and nutrition

Chitosan packaging has been widely studied for food preservation, the application of which is expanded by the incorporation of tea polyphenols. This paper reviews the influence of tea polyphenols incorporation on chitosan-based packaging from the perspectives of physicochemical properties, bioactivity used for food preservation, and nutritional value. The physicochemical properties included optical properties, mechanical properties, water solubility, moisture content, and water vapor barrier property, concluding that the addition of tea polyphenols improved the opacity, water solubility, and water vapor barrier property of chitosan packaging, and the mechanical properties and water content were decreased. The bioactivity used for food preservation, that is antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, is enhanced by tea polyphenols, improving the preservation of food like meat, fruits, and vegetables. In the future, efforts will be needed to improve the mechanical properties of composite film and adjust the formula of tea polyphenols/chitosan composite film to apply to different foods. Besides, the identification and development of high nutritional value tea polyphenol/chitosan composite film is a valuable but challenging task. This review is expected to scientifically guide the application of tea polyphenols in chitosan packaging.

Preparation and Characterization of Soluble Dietary Fiber Edible Packaging Films Reinforced by Nanocellulose from Navel Orange Peel Pomace

The packaging problem with petroleum-based synthetic polymers prompts the development of edible packaging films. The high value-added reuse of navel orange peel pomace, which is rich in bioactive compounds, merited more considerations. Herein, nanocellulose (ONCC) and soluble dietary fiber (OSDF) from navel orange peel pomace are firstly used to prepare dietary fiber-based edible packaging films using a simple physical blend method, and the impact of ONCC on the film's properties is analyzed. Adopting three methods in a step-by-step approach to find the best formula for edible packaging films. The results show that dietary-fiber-based edible packaging films with 4 wt.% ONCC form a network structure, and their crystallinity, maximum pyrolysis temperature, and melting temperature are improved. What's more, dietary-fiber-based edible packaging films have a wide range of potential uses in edible packaging.

Visible Light-Promoted Oxidative Cross-Coupling of Alcohols to Esters

Ester is one of the most significant functional groups in organic chemistry and is enclosed in several valued molecules. Usually, esters are prepared through the acid-catalyzed esterification reaction of carboxylic acids with alcohols, transesterification of esters with alcohols, or via activation of carboxylic acids followed by the addition of alcohols. However, these procedures typically imply the excess use of reactants and harsh reaction conditions. Visible light-mediated photoreactions have been disclosed to display a safe, sustainable, and accessible alternative to traditional methods, and to lead new reactivity modes in organic procedures. In this context, we propose a transition metal-based and organic-based photocatalyst-free synthesis of esters from alcohols induced by visible light. The methodology can be carried out using sunlight or artificial visible light as a solar simulator or a blue LED source.

Comparison of the Properties of Pullulan-Based Active Edible Coatings Implemented for Improving Sliced Cheese Shelf Life

The development of active edible coatings with improved mechanical and barrier properties is a huge challenge. In this study, active edible coatings for sliced cheese have been developed using pullulan (Pull) in combination with two different biopolymers, chitosan (CS) and gelatine (Gel), and a combination of hydrolats as a source of active compounds with antimicrobial effects. In comparison to the monolayer coating, the bilayer coating system demonstrates improved barrier and mechanical properties. A preliminary assessment of the antimicrobial effect of lemongrass and curry plant hydrolats has revealed that both hydrolats exhibited antimicrobial activity against the targeted bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, albeit at different levels. The obtained results suggest that a mixture of 1.56% lemongrass and 12.5% curry plant hydrolats yielded a lower fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) value. Bilayer coating systems (Pull/CS and Pull/Gel) with an incorporated mixture of hydrolats have demonstrated effectiveness in both cases: artificial contamination before application of the coating system and after application of the coating system. In both contamination scenarios, the coating systems consistently effectively limited bacterial proliferation, indicating the antimicrobial effect of the hydrolat mixture in the coating layers. In the case of artificial contamination before applying the coating system, both coatings demonstrated antimicrobial effectiveness, but the formulation with chitosan had a biocide effect, while the other, with gelatine, had only a bacteriostatic effect in a long-term setting. In the second case, both Pull/CS and Pull/Gel coatings demonstrated effectiveness in inhibiting bacterial growth regardless of the moment of contamination of the sample; the Pull/CS coating showed slightly better antimicrobial activity, achieving complete elimination of bacteria earlier compared with the Pull/Gel coating system.

Enhancement of the Physical and Functional Properties of Chitosan Films by Incorporating Galla chinensis Extract

Composite films based on chitosan (CS) incorporating Galla chinensis extract (GCNE) at different CS/GCNE weight ratios, which are both biodegradable and multifunctional, were fabricated using the solution-casting method. The FTIR analyses indicated that a good interaction was presented among the GCNE and CS through an intermolecular hydrogen bond. The incorporation of the GCNE improved the films' elongation at break, UV-light blocking, and decreased the moisture regain (from 16.68% to 10.69%) and water absorption (from 80.65% to 54.74%). Moreover, the CS/GCNE films exhibited a strong antioxidant activity (from 57.11% to 70.37% of DPPH and from 35.53% to 46.73% of ABTS scavenging activities) mainly due to the high content of phenolic compounds in the incorporated GCNE. The CS/GCNE film-forming solution coatings demonstrated their effectiveness in preserving the quality of postharvest mangoes, specifically by minimizing the change in the firmness, weight loss, titratable acidity, and total phenolic and ascorbic acids. These findings suggest that the multifunctional composite films possess a high application potential to preserve postharvest fruits.

Recent Advances in Biomedical Nanotechnology Related to Natural Products

Natural product processing via nanotechnology has opened the door to innovative and significant applications in medical fields. On one hand, plants-derived bioactive ingredients such as phenols, pentacyclic triterpenes and flavonoids exhibit significant pharmacological activities, on another hand, most of them are hydrophobic in nature, posing challenges to their use. To overcome this issue, nanoencapsulation technology is employed to encapsulate these lipophilic compounds and enhance their bioavailability. In this regard, various nano-sized vehicles, including degradable functional polymer organic compounds, mesoporous silicon or carbon materials, offer superior stability and retention for bioactive ingredients against decomposition and loss during delivery as well as sustained release. On the other hand, some naturally occurring polymers, lipids and even microorganisms, which constitute a significant portion of Earth's biomass, show promising potential for biomedical applications as well. Through nano-processing, these natural products can be developed into nano-delivery systems with desirable characteristics for encapsulation a wide range of bioactive components and therapeutic agents, facilitating in vivo drug transport. Beyond the presentation of the most recent nanoencapsulation and nano-processing advancements with formulations mainly based on natural products, this review emphasizes the importance of their physicochemical properties at the nanoscale and their potential in disease therapy.

Advances in transglutaminase cross-linked protein-based food packaging films; a review

Pushed by the environmental pollution and health hazards of plastic packaging, the development of biodegradable food packaging films (FPFs) is a necessary and sustainable trend for social development. Most protein molecules have excellent film-forming properties as natural polymer matrices, and the assembled films have excellent barrier properties, but show defects such as low water resistance and poor mechanical properties. In order to improve the performance of protein-based films, transglutaminase (TG) is used as a safe and green cross-linking (CL) agent. This work covers recent developments on TG cross-linked protein-based FPFs, mainly comprising proteins of animal and plant origin, including gelatin, whey protein, zein, soy proteins, bitter vetch protein, etc. The chemical properties and reaction mechanism of TG are briefly introduced, focusing on the effects of TG CL on the physicochemical properties of different protein-based FPFs, including barrier properties, water resistance, mechanical properties and thermal stability. It is concluded that the addition of TG can significantly improve the physical and mechanical properties of protein-based films, mainly improving their water resistance, barrier, mechanical and thermal properties. It is worth noting that the effect of TG on the properties of protein-based films is not only related to the concentration of TG added, but also related to CL temperature and other factors. Moreover, TG can also be used in combination with other strategies to improve the properties of protein-based films.

Recent advances in chitosan-based materials; The synthesis, modifications and biomedical applications

The attention to polymer-based biomaterials, for instance, chitosan and its derivatives, as well as the techniques for using them in numerous scientific domains, is continuously rising. Chitosan is a decomposable naturally occurring polymeric material that is mostly obtained from seafood waste. Because of its special ecofriendly, biocompatible, non- toxic nature as well as antimicrobial properties, chitosan-based materials have received a lot of interest in the field of biomedical applications. The reactivity of chitosan is mainly because of the amino and hydroxyl groups in its composition, which makes it further fascinating for various uses, including biosensing, textile finishing, antimicrobial wound dressing, tissue engineering, bioimaging, gene, DNA and drug delivery and as a coating material for medical implants. This study is an overview of the different types of chitosan-based materials which now a days have been fabricated by applying different techniques and modifications that include etherification, esterification, crosslinking, graft copolymerization and o-acetylation etc. for hydroxyl groups' processes and acetylation, quaternization, Schiff's base reaction, and grafting for amino groups' reactions. Furthermore, this overview summarizes the literature from recent years related to the important applications of chitosan-based materials (i.e., thin films, nanocomposites or nanoparticles, sponges and hydrogels) in different biomedical applications.

Tannic Acid and Ca2+ Double-Crosslinked Alginate Films for Passion Fruit Preservation

In this study, the interaction of different concentrations of tannic acid (TA) (10%, 20%, and 30% w/w) and Ca2+ with alginate (SA) was utilized to create double-crosslinked SA films. The resulting films were evaluated for their optical, mechanical, water resistance, and barrier properties, and their microstructure and intermolecular interactions were also characterized. The SA films containing 20% TA showed the best mechanical properties, with an observed increase in tensile strength of 22.54%. In terms of water vapor permeability, the SA film containing 30% TA exhibited the highest barrier property, which was 25.36% higher than that of the pure SA film. Moreover, TA demonstrated a strong UV absorption ability, resulting in a nearly 0% UV transmittance of the SA film at 280 nm. It can be seen that SA films containing 20% TA have excellent barrier and mechanical properties, and the development of such films will be applied to the storage and packaging of fresh food. It is worth noting that this work also investigated the effect of SA coatings containing different concentrations of TA on the preservation of passion fruits for 7 days. The results revealed that passion fruits treated with SA coatings containing a 30% TA concentration maintained a better appearance on the 7th day and had the lowest weight loss and crumpling indices of approximately 8.98% and 2.17, respectively, compared to the other treatment groups. Therefore, based on the overall results, the addition of 30% TA to SA coatings proved to be more effective and can be considered a promising approach for delaying fruit senescence and decay.

Vanillin Cross-Linked Chitosan Film with Controlled Release of Green Tea Polyphenols for Active Food Packaging

We report a novel cross-linked chitosan composite film containing vanillin, glycerol, and green tea extract. The effects of vanillin-mediated cross-linking and the incorporation of antimicrobial green tea polyphenols were investigated. The cross-linking effect, confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, increased the tensile strength of the biopolymer film to 20.9 ± 3 MPa. The release kinetics of polyphenols from the chitosan-vanillin matrix was studied, and we reported an initial burst release (8 h) followed by controlled release (8 to 400 h). It was found that both vanillin and green tea polyphenols were successful inhibitors of foodborne bacteria, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of the tea polyphenols determined as 0.15 mg/mL (Staphylococcus aureus). These active components also displayed strong antioxidant capacities, with polyphenols quenching >80% of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals at all concentrations tested. Degradation results revealed that there was a significant (>85%) mass loss of all samples after being buried in compost for 12 weeks. The biopolymeric films, prepared by solvent casting methods, adhere to green chemistry and waste valorization principles. The one-pot recipe reported may also be applied to other cross-linkers and active compounds with similar chemical functionalities. Based on the obtained results, the presented material provides a promising starting point for the development of a degradable active packaging material.

Chitosan-grafted phenolic acids as an efficient biopolymer for food packaging films/coatings

Chitosan (CS), a bio-renewable natural material, has the potential to be utilized as a biopolymer for food packaging films (PFs)/coatings. However, its low solubility in dilute acid solutions and poor antioxidant and antimicrobial activities limit its application in PFs/coatings. To address these restrictions, chemical modification of CS has garnered increasing interest, with graft copolymerization being the most extensively used method. Phenolic acids (PAs) as natural small molecules are used as excellent candidates for CS grafting. This work focuses on the progress of CS grafted PA (CS-g-PA) based films, introducing the chemistry and methods of preparing CS-g-PA, particularly the effects of different PAs grafting on the properties of CS films. In addition, this work discusses the application of different CS-g-PA functionalized PFs/coatings for food preservation. It is concluded that the food preservation capability of CS-based films/coatings can be improved by modifying the properties of CS-based films through PA grafting.

Effect of Kaolin clay and Ficus carica mediated silver nanoparticles on chitosan food packaging film for fresh apple slice preservation

In this work, a novel antioxidant, antibacterial, and biodegradable food packaging film was elaborated, by incorporating natural kaolin clay (KC) and Ficus carica mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into Chitosan (Cht). A comparison of the physico-chemical and functional characteristics of the Cht/KC/AgNPs film was performed with those of Cht, Cht/KC, and Cht/AgNPs. SEM analysis showed a rough surface in the composite films containing KC particles because of their large diameter (50-120 μm) compared to AgNPs (20-80 nm). The FTIR analysis suggested that the interactions between Cht and AgNPs were stronger than those between Cht and KC. The tensile strength of Cht film increased from 16 MPa to ∼24 MPa in Cht/KC/AgNPs film. The introduction of KC and/or AgNPs considerably improved the light and moisture barrier capacity of the Cht film. The UV light transmittance decreased by 50 % for Cht film when incorporated by KC and AgNPs. Moreover, Cht/AgNPs was better in terms of antioxidant, antibacterial, and mechanical compared to Cht/KC, which was superior in biodegradability and water vapor barrier capacity. In particular, the Cht/KC/AgNPs film presented good barrier, antioxidants, antibacterial, mechanical, and biodegradable properties, owing to the synergistic effect between KC and AgNPs. For the packaging properties, all the films were tested for their ability to keep the freshness of apple slices as wrapping material. The films exhibited good results, and the Cht/KC/AgNPs showed promising performance regarding the moisture loss, browning index, total phenolic compound, and antioxidant activity of the apple slices. Moreover, the Cht/KC/AgNPs film exhibited a migration of silver meeting the standards set by EFSA and ECHA, which makes this film safe for food packaging.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles mediated Diospyros kaki L. (Persimmon): determination of chemical composition and evaluation of their antimicrobials and anticancer activities

The eco-friendly synthesis of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) using biological materials is an encouraging and innovativeness approach to nanotechnology. Among other synthesizing methods, biological methods are chosen because of their high efficiency and purity in many aspects. In this work, using the aqueous extract obtained from the green leaves of the D. kaki L. (DK); silver nanoparticles were synthesized in a short time and simply with an eco-friendly approach. The properties of the synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were characterized using various techniques and measurements. In the characterization data of AgNPs, Maximum absorbance at 453.34 nm wavelengths, the average size distribution of 27.12 nm, the surface charge of -22.4 mV, and spherical appearance were observed. LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis was used to assess the compound composition of D. kaki leaf extract. The chemical profiling of the crude extract of D. kaki leaves revealed the presence of a variety of phytochemicals, predominantly phenolics, resulting in the identification of five major high-feature compounds: two major phenolic acids (Chlorogenic acid and Cynarin), and tree flavonol glucosides (hyperoside, quercetin-3-glucoside, and quercetin-3- D-xyloside). The components with the highest concentrations were cynarin, chlorogenic acid, quercetin-3- D-xyloside, hyperoside, and quercetin-3-glucoside, respectively. Antimicrobial results were determined by a MIC assay. The biosynthesized AgNPs exhibited strong antibacterial activity against the human and food pathogen Gram (+ and -) bacteria and good antifungal activity against pathogenic yeast. It was determined that 0.03-0.050 μg/mL concentrations ranges of DK-AgNPs were growth suppressive concentrations on all pathogen microorganisms. The MTT technique was used to study the cytotoxic effects of produced AgNPs on cancer cell lines (Glioblastoma (U118), Human Colorectal Adenocarcinoma (Caco-2), Human Ovarian Sarcoma (Skov-3) cancer cell lines, and Human Dermal Fibroblast (HDF) healthy cell line). It has been observed that they have a suppressive effect on the proliferation of cancerous cell lines. After 48 h of treatment with Ag-NPs, the DK-AgNPs were found to be extremely cytotoxic to the CaCo-2 cell line, inhibiting cell viability by up to 59.49% at a concentration of 50 g mL^-1. It was found that the viability was inversely related to the DK-AgNP concentration. The biosynthesized AgNPs had dose-dependent anticancer efficacy. Because of the high concentration of bioactive chemicals in Diospyros kaki, it may be employed as a biological resource in medicinal applications. DK-AgNPs were shown to be an effective antibacterial agent as well as a prospective anticancer agent. The results provide a potential approach for the biogenic production of DK-AgNPs utilizing D. kaki aqueous leaf extract.

Evaluation of the Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Potential of SiO2 Modified with Cinnamon Essential Oil (Cinnamomum Verum) for Its Use as a Nanofiller in Active Packaging PLA Films

One of the main causes of food spoilage is the lipid oxidation of its components, which generates the loss of nutrients and color, together with the invasion of pathogenic microorganisms. In order to minimize these effects, active packaging has played an important role in preservation in recent years. Therefore, in the present study, an active packaging film was developed using polylactic acid (PLA) and silicon dioxide (SiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) (0.1% w/w) chemically modified with cinnamon essential oil (CEO). For the modification of the NPs, two methods (M1 and M2) were tested, and their effects on the chemical, mechanical, and physical properties of the polymer matrix were evaluated. The results showed that CEO conferred to SiO₂ NPs had a high percentage of 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical inhibition (>70%), cell viability (>80%), and strong inhibition to E. coli, at 45 and 11 µg/mL for M1 and M2, respectively, and thermal stability. Films were prepared with these NPs, and characterizations and evaluations on apple storage were performed for 21 days. The results show that the films with pristine SiO₂ improved tensile strength (28.06 MPa), as well as Young's modulus (0.368 MPa) since PLA films only presented values of 27.06 MPa and 0.324 MPa, respectively; however, films with modified NPs decreased tensile strength values (26.22 and 25.13 MPa), but increased elongation at break (from 5.05% to 10.32-8.32%). The water solubility decreased from 15% to 6-8% for the films with NPs, as well as the contact angle, from 90.21° to 73° for the M2 film. The water vapor permeability increased for the M2 film, presenting a value of 9.50 × 10^-8 g Pa^-1 h^-1 m^-2. FTIR analysis indicated that the addition of NPs with and without CEO did not modify the molecular structure of pure PLA; however, DSC analysis indicated that the crystallinity of the films was improved. The packaging prepared with M1 (without Tween 80) showed good results at the end of storage: lower values in color difference (5.59), organic acid degradation (0.042), weight loss (24.24%), and pH (4.02), making CEO-SiO₂ a good component to produce active packaging.

Fabrication and characterization of hybrid eco-friendly high methoxyl pectin/gelatin/TiO2/curcumin (PGTC) nanocomposite biofilms for salmon fillet packaging

Hybrid eco-friendly nanocomposite films were fabricated by blending high-methoxyl pectin, gelatin, TiO₂, and curcumin through the solution casting method. Various concentrations (0-5 wt%) of TiO₂ nanoparticles (TNPs) and curcumin as an organic filler were added to the blend solutions. A high TNP concentration affected the surface morphology, roughness, and compactness of the films. Additionally, 3D mapping revealed the nanoparticle distribution in the film layers. Moisture content, water solubility, and light transmittance reduced dramatically with increasing TNP content, in accordance with the water vapor and oxygen permeabilities. X-ray diffraction revealed that the films were semicrystalline nanocomposites, and the thermal properties of the films increased when 5 wt% of TNPs was incorporated into the blend solution. Fourier-transform infrared and Raman analyses revealed interactions among biopolymers, nanoparticles, and organic fillers through hydrogen bonding. The shelf life of fresh salmon fillets was prolonged to six days for all groups, revealed by total viable counts and psychrotrophic bacteria counts, and the pH of the salmon fillets could be extended until the sixth day for all groups. Biodegradation assays demonstrated a significant weight loss in the nanocomposite films. Therefore, a nanocomposite film with 5 wt% TNPs could potentially be cytotoxic to NIH 3T3 cells.

Copper-based nanoparticles for biopolymer-based functional films in food packaging applications

This review summarizes the latest developments in the design, fabrication, and application of various Cu-based nanofillers to prepare biopolymer-based functional packaging films, focusing on the effects of inorganic nanoparticles on the optical, mechanical, gas barrier properties, moisture sensitivity, and functional properties of the films. In addition, the potential application of Cu-based nanoparticle-added biopolymer films for fresh food preservation and the effect of nanoparticle migration on food safety were discussed. The incorporation of Cu-based nanoparticles improved the film properties with enhanced functional performance. Cu-based nanoparticles such as copper oxide, copper sulfide, copper ions, and copper alloys affect biopolymer-based films differently. The properties of composite films containing Cu-based nanoparticles depend on the concentration of the filler, the state of dispersion, and the interaction of the nanoparticles with the biopolymer matrix in the film. The composite film filled with Cu-based nanoparticles effectively extended the shelf life by maintaining the quality of various fresh foods and securing safety. However, studies on the migration characteristics and safety of copper-based nanoparticle food packaging films are currently being conducted on plastic-based films such as polyethylene, and research on bio-based films is limited.

Sustainable and Bio-Based Food Packaging: A Review on Past and Current Design Innovations

Food loss and waste occur for many reasons, from crop processing to household leftovers. Even though some waste generation is unavoidable, a considerable amount is due to supply chain inefficiencies and damage during transport and handling. Packaging design and materials innovations represent real opportunities to reduce food waste within the supply chain. Besides, changes in people's lifestyles have increased the demand for high-quality, fresh, minimally processed, and ready-to-eat food products with extended shelf-life, that need to meet strict and constantly renewed food safety regulations. In this regard, accurate monitoring of food quality and spoilage is necessary to diminish both health hazards and food waste. Thus, this work provides an overview of the most recent advances in the investigation and development of food packaging materials and design with the aim to improve food chain sustainability. Enhanced barrier and surface properties as well as active materials for food conservation are reviewed. Likewise, the function, importance, current availability, and future trends of intelligent and smart packaging systems are presented, especially considering biobased sensor development by 3D printing technology. In addition, driving factors affecting fully biobased packaging design and materials development and production are discussed, considering byproducts and waste minimization and revalorization, recyclability, biodegradability, and other possible ends-of-life and their impact on product/package system sustainability.

Chitosan-based carbon nitride-polydopamine‑silver composite dressing with antibacterial properties for wound healing

Infection represents a major clinical barrier that delays wound healing, while the overuse of antibiotics can lead to bacterial resistance. Hence, it is of particular important to develop a new type of dressing to combat bacterial resistance. Herein, a carbon nitride-polydopamine‑silver complex (C₃N₄-PDA-Ag) was prepared using the photocatalyst C₃N₄ and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to achieve a synergistic antimicrobial effect. The solution casting method was then employed to further modify the C₃N₄-PDA-Ag complex by compounding it with chitosan (CS), thereby forming a C₃N₄-PDA-Ag@CS film. The results revealed that the C₃N₄-PDA-Ag@CS film exhibits superior antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa compared to the CS group. The hemolysis, cytotoxicity, and in vivo implantation experiments indicated that the composite film possesses excellent in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility. In addition, the composite dressing promoted wound healing in infected mice by facilitating collagen deposition and accelerating epidermal regeneration. Collectively, the findings of this study clearly demonstrate that the C₃N₄-PDA-Ag@CS composite dressing has excellent antibacterial properties, biocompatibility, and enhances wound healing, thus providing a strategy for the application of photocatalytic materials for the treatment of infected wounds.

High performance biopolymeric packaging films containing zinc oxide nanoparticles for fresh food preservation: A review

Biodegradable food packaging films (FPFs) assembled from sustainable biopolymeric materials are of increasing interest to the food industry due to pollution and health risks resulting from the use of conventional plastic packaging. However, the functional performance of these FPFs is often poorer than that of plastic films, which limits their commercial application. This problem may be partly overcome by incorporating nano-additives like zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs) into the films. The incorporation of ZNPs into FPFs can improve their functional performance. The properties of these films depends on the concentration, dispersion state, and interactions of ZNPs with the biopolymeric matrix in the films. ZNPs-loaded films and coatings are highly effective at preserving a variety of fresh foods. Studies of ZNPs migration through FPFs have shown that the zinc is mainly transported in an ionic form and the amount entering foods is below safety standards. This article reviews recent developments in the design, fabrication, and application of ZNPs-loaded FPFs based on biopolymers, focusing on the impacts of ZNPs on the optical, barrier, mechanical, water sensitivity, and antimicrobial properties of the films. The potential applications of ZNPs-loaded FPFs for fresh food preservation is also discussed.

Nanocomposite multifunctional hyaluronic acid hydrogel with photothermal antibacterial and antioxidant properties for infected wound healing

Bacterial infection and subsequent reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage are major factors that delay wound healing in infected skin. Recently, photothermal therapy (PTT), as a new antibacterial method, has shown great advantages in the treatment of infected skin wound. Antibacterial and antioxidant hydrogels can reduce bacterial colonization and infection, scavenge ROS, relieve inflammation, and accelerate wound healing. In this study, an enzyme-crosslinked hyaluronic acid-tyramine (HT) hydrogel loaded with antioxidant and photothermal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), named HTA, was developed as functional wound dressing to promote the infected skin wound healing. Natural antioxidant tannic acids (TA) were used as both reducing and stabilizing agents to facilely synthesize the silver nanoparticles capped with TA (AgNPs@TA). The incorporation of AgNPs@TA significantly enhanced the antioxidant, antibacterial, photothermal antibacterial, adhesive, and hemostatic abilities of the resulted HTA hydrogel. Besides, HTA hydrogel has rapid gelation, well injection and biocompatibility. In vivo results on the Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli co-infected mouse skin wound model showed that HTA_0.4 (containing 0.4 mg/mL AgNPs@TA) hydrogel combined with near infrared ray radiation highly alleviated inflammation, promoted angiogenesis, and accelerated the healing process. Therefore, this nanocomposite hydrogel wound dressing with antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities has great application potential in the treatment of infected skin wounds.

Chitosan Edible Films and Coatings with Added Bioactive Compounds: Antibacterial and Antioxidant Properties and Their Application to Food Products: A Review

Chitosan is the deacetylated form of chitin regarded as one of the most abundant polymers and due to its properties, both chitosan alone or in combination with bioactive substances for the production of biodegradable films and coatings is gaining attention in terms of applications in the food industry. To enhance the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of chitosan, a vast variety of plant extracts have been incorporated to meet consumer demands for more environmentally friendly and synthetic preservative-free foods. This review provides knowledge about the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of chitosan films and coatings enriched with natural extracts as well as their applications in various food products and the effects they had on them. In a nutshell, it has been demonstrated that chitosan can act as a coating or packaging material with excellent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties in addition to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. However, further research should be carried out to widen the applications of bioactive chitosan coatings to more foods and industries as well was their industrial scale-up, thus helping to minimize the use of plastic materials.

Cellulose-Based Light-Management Films with Improved Properties Directly Fabricated from Green Tea

Tea polyphenols are a phenolic bioactive compound extracted from tea leaves and have been widely used as additives to prepare functional materials used in packaging, adsorption and energy fields. Nevertheless, tea polyphenols should be extracted first from the leaves before use, leading to energy consumption and the waste of tea. Therefore, completely and directly utilizing the tea leaf to fabricate novel composite materials is more attractive and meaningful. Herein, semi-transparent green-tea-based all-biomass light-management films with improved strength, a tunable haze (60–80%) and UV-shielding properties (24.23% for UVA and 4.45% for UVB) were directly manufactured from green tea by adding high-degree polymerization wood pulps to form entanglement networks. Additionally, the green-tea-based composite films can be produced on a large scale by adding green tea solution units to the existing continuous production process of pure cellulose films. Thus, a facile and feasible approach was proposed to realize the valorization of green tea by preparing green-tea-based all-biomass light-management films that have great prospects in flexible devices and energy-efficient buildings.

Development of Pomegranate Peel Extract and Nano ZnO Co-Reinforced Polylactic Acid Film for Active Food Packaging

The multifunctional packaging used for fresh food, such as antioxidant and antimicrobial packaging, can reduce food waste. In this work, a polylactic acid (PLA)-based composite film with antioxidant and antibacterial properties was prepared by using nano-zinc oxide (ZnONPs) and pomegranate peel extract (PEE) via the solvent-casting method. Different amounts of PEE (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 wt%) and 3 wt% ZnONPs were added to PLA to produce the active films. The results of various characterizations (SEM, XRD, etc.) showed that ZnONPs and PEE were uniformly dispersed in PLA film. Compared to PLA films, the PLA/ZnONPs/PEE films showed an increased UV barrier, water vapor permeability and elongation at break, and decreased transparency and tensile strength. In addition, the antioxidant activity of the composite film was evaluated based on DPPH and ABTS. The maximum DPPH and ABTS scavenging activities of PLA/ZnONPs/PEE were 96.2 ± 0.8% and 93.1 ± 0.5%. After 24 h, PLA/ZnONPs/PEE composite film inhibited 1.4 ± 0.05 Log CFU/mL of S. aureus and 8.2 ± 0.35 Log CFU/mL of E. coli, compared with the blank group. The results showed that PLA/ZnONPs/PEE composite film had good antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Therefore, the composite film showed great potential for food packaging.

A review: Silver–zinc oxide nanoparticles – organoclay-reinforced chitosan bionanocomposites for food packaging

Research on bionanocomposites has been developed, while its application as food packaging is still being explored. They are usually made from natural polymers such as cellulose acetate, chitosan (CS), and polyvinyl alcohol. Bionanocomposite materials can replace traditional non-biodegradable plastic packaging materials, enabling them to use new, high-performance, lightweight, and environmentally friendly composite materials. However, this natural polymer has a weakness in mechanical properties. Therefore, a composite system is needed that will improve the properties of the biodegradable food packaging. The aim of this mini-review is to demonstrate recent progress in the synthesis, modification, characterization, and application of bionanocomposites reported by previous researchers. The focus is on the preparation and characterization of CS-based bionanocomposites. The mechanical properties of CS-based food packaging can be improved by adding reinforcement from inorganic materials such as organoclay. Meanwhile, the anti-bacterial properties of CS-based food packaging can be improved by adding nanoparticles such as Ag and ZnO.

Development of soy-based nanocomposite film: Modeling for barrier and mechanical properties and its application as cheese slice separator

In the current study, soybean aqueous extract (SAE)-based nanocomposite film was developed by incorporating cellulose nanofiber (CNF) at various concentrations (0-10%). Effect of nanoreinforcement on essential properties of the nanocomposite film such as barrier, mechanical, water affinity, and optical properties were evaluated. Homogeneous films with improved barrier and mechanical properties were observed until 6% CNF, beyond which considerable reduction in desirable properties was noticed due to nanoparticle's agglomeration effect. Furthermore, the prediction of the mechanical and barrier properties of nanocomposite film was performed with mathematical models such as modified Halpin-Tsai and modified Nielsen equations, respectively. The model-fitting results reveal that the theoretically predicted values were in close agreement with the experimental values. Hence, these models were well suited for predicting respective properties. Model prediction also implies that the increase in the aspect ratio of fillers can considerably cause a reduction in water vapor permeability and improvement in mechanical properties. Suitability of developed film as cheese slice separator was evaluated: they had equivalent outcomes in terms of easiness in slice separation and wholeness of slices after separation compared to the commercial material.

Bioactive Edible Sodium Alginate Films Incorporated with Tannic Acid as Antimicrobial and Antioxidative Food Packaging

Currently, biodegradable and functional food packaging materials have attracted more and more attention due to their potential advantages. Biopolymers are one of the promising materials used to produce biodegradable food packaging films, and sodium alginate (SA) is one of the most used polysaccharides. In this work, we explored a novel edible sodium alginate (SA)/tannic acid (TA) film as biodegradable active food packaging material. The impact of TA concentration on the UV light blocking ability, transparency, water vapor barrier ability, mechanical strength, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of the SA-TA films was comprehensively investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results revealed that strong hydrogen bonding was the main intermolecular interaction between SA and TA. As TA concentration in the films increased, the water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased from 1.24 × 10^-6 to 0.54 × 10^-6 g/m/h/Pa, the DPPH radical scavenging activity increased from 0.008% to 89.02%. Moreover, the incorporation of TA effectively blocked UV light and elevated antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Overall, the SA films with TA exhibited better water vapor barrier ability, remarkable UV-light barrier ability and antioxidant activity while showing a slight decrease in light transmittance. These results indicated the potential application of TA as a functional additive agent for developing multifunctional food packaging materials.

Recent advances in the application of nanotechnology to create antioxidant active food packaging materials

Nanotechnology is being used to create innovative food packaging systems that can inhibit the oxidation of foods, thereby improving their quality, safety, and shelf life. These nano-enabled antioxidant packaging materials may therefore increase the healthiness and sustainability of the food supply chain. Recent progress in the application of nanotechnology to create antioxidant packaging materials is reviewed in this paper. The utilization of nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanocrystals, and nanoemulsions to incorporate antioxidants into these packaging materials is highlighted. The application of nano-enabled antioxidant packaging materials to preserve meat, seafood, fruit, vegetable, and other foods is then discussed. Finally, future directions and challenges in the development of this kind of active packaging material are highlighted to stimulate new areas of future research. Nanotechnology has already been used to create antioxidant packaging materials that inhibit oxidative deterioration reactions in foods, thereby prolonging their shelf life and reducing food waste. However, the safety, cost, efficacy, and scale-up of this technology still needs to be established before it will be commercially viable for many applications.

Potato starch films by incorporating tea polyphenol and MgO nanoparticles with enhanced physical, functional and preserved properties

Due to the massive environmental pollution caused by synthetic plastic packaging accumulation and contemporary necessities of food packaging materials, the biodegradable and multifunctional bionanocomposite films based on potato starch (PS) incorporating tea polyphenol (TP) and MgO nanoparticles (MgO-NPs) were successfully fabricated by the solution casting method, and their physical and functional properties and application in fruits preservation were systematically investigated. Incorporation of TP and MgO-NPs improved the films' tensile strength, UV light-blocking, hydrophobicity and thermal stability, and decreased their moisture content (from 14.02 % to 11.21 %), water solubility (from 19.57 % to 16.56 %), and water vapor permeability (from 17.32 to 9.07 × 10^-11 g∙m^-1∙s^-1∙Pa^-1). Moreover, the PS/TP/MgO-NPs films exhibited strong antioxidant activity, and remarkable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with the diameter of inhibition zone of 25.60 mm and 27.50 mm, respectively. SEM, ATR-FTIR and XRD analyses indicated the TP and MgO-NPs were dispersed homogeneously in the PS matrix, and identified the molecular interactions of hydrogen bond, hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic attraction. Biodegradability assessment showed that all the films were rapidly decomposed within ~20 days under simulated environmental conditions. Compared to control, the PS/TP/MgO-NPs film-forming solution coatings were capable of maintaining fruit quality by reducing the change in weight loss, firmness and total soluble solids. Overall, these results suggested that the multifunctional bionanocomposite films could be a potential approach for developing sustainable active food packaging.

A super-hydrophilic partially reduced graphene oxide membrane with improved stability and antibacterial properties

In order to improve stability and antibacterial property, a novel super-hydrophilic partially reduced graphene oxide membrane was prepared by interfacial polymerization of piperazine and partially reduced graphene oxide as aqueous solution and trimesoyl chloride as organic solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and contact angle measurement were conducted to probe the morphology and properties of the membranes. The modified membrane possessed super-hydrophilicity, improved durability and swelling resistance. The optimized membrane had a molecular weight cut off of about 674 Da and possessed a pure water permeability of 49.86 L·m^-2·h^-1·MPa^-1. The retention order of salts was Na₂SO₄ > MgSO₄ > MgCl₂ > Na₂CO₃ > CaCl₂ > NaCl, while the rejection for four kinds of pharmaceuticals followed the order of ibuprofen (92%) > carbamazepine (87%) > amlodipine (80%) > atenolol (76%), indicating that the negatively charged membrane could improve the retention performance by the electrostatic repulsive effect. Moreover, the enhanced antibacterial performance of membrane attributed to the dual effects of the super-hydrophilicity and the tea polyphenols antibacterial material loading, which may alter the charge distribution on and within the membrane, leading to loss of cell viability.
