Magnetite nanoparticle embedded Pectin-graft-poly(N-hydroxyethylacrylamide) hydrogel: Evaluation as adsorbent for dyes and heavy metal ions from waste water

Adsorption performance and mechanism of pectin modified with β-cyclodextrin for Zn2+ and Cu2

Removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions has drawn more and more attentions these years because of their serious global health challenge to human society. To develop an adsorbent with green, stable and high-efficiency for adsorption of heavy metals, pectin β-cyclodextrin composite was successfully prepared and used for Zn2+ and Cu2+ adsorption for the first time. Various variables that influence the adsorption performance were explored, and the optimal adsorption conditions were determined. According to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, the adsorption process of Zn2+ and Cu2+ by the adsorbent was mainly chemical adsorption. The adsorbent adsorption process was an exothermic and non-spontaneous process. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity was 12.51 ± 0.33 and 24.98 ± 0.23 mg/g for Zn2+ and Cu2+, respectively. The FTIR, EDX and XPS results revealed that the main mechanisms of removing pollutants by adsorbent were ion exchange and coordination. In addition, electrostatic attraction and chelation were present in the adsorption process. After five adsorption desorption cycles, the pectin β-cyclodextrin composite adsorbent still exhibited adsorption and regeneration capabilities. This study provides a low-cost, effective and simple method for preparation of modified pectin, which has excellent application potential in the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Preparation and characterization of pectin/hydroxyethyl cellulose/clay/TiO2 bionanocomposite films for microbial pathogen removal from contaminated water

Some of conventional wastewater disinfectants can have a harmful influence on the environment as well as human health. The aim of this investigation was synthesis and characterizes ecofriendly pectin/hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)/clay and pectin/HEC/clay incorporated with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) and use the prepared bionanocomposite as microbial disinfectants for real wastewater. Pectin/HEC/clay and pectin/HEC/clay/TiO2 bionanocomposite were characterized by various methods including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Mechanical properties and water vapor permeability (WVP) were carried out. The results of SEM showed that, the prepared bionanocomposite had a smooth surface. Additionally, TiO2 nanoparticles to the pectin/HEC/clay composites may lead to changes in the FTIR spectrum. The intensity of XRD peaks indicated that, TiO2NPs was small size crystallite. TGA illustrated that pectin has moderate thermal stability, while HEC generally exhibits good thermal stability. The TEM showed that, TiO2 nanoparticles have diameters <25 nm. On the other hand, antimicrobial activities of pectin/HEC/clay against Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans have been enhanced by adding TiO2NPs. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of pectin/HEC/clay/TiO2 against E. coli was 200 mg/mL. Moreover, complete eradication of E. coli, Salmonella and Candida spp. from real wastewater was observed by using pectin/HEC/clay/TiO2 bionanocomposite. Finally, it can be concluded that, the synthesized bionanocomposite is environmentally friendly and considered an excellent disinfectant matter for removal of the microbial pathogens from wastewater to safely reuse.

Therapeutic efficacy of Strobilanthes urticifolia-infused pectin/polyacrylic acid hydrogel for targeted hepatorenal fibrosis mitigation: A multifaceted biomaterial approach

Pectin/polyacrylic acid (PPAA) hydrogel is a unique and versatile biomaterial with applications in drug delivery, wound healing, tissue engineering, and agriculture, owing to its tailored properties and multifunctional attributes. This study aims to harness the therapeutic potential of Strobilanthes urticifolia extract within a PPAA hydrogel matrix to attenuate liver and kidney fibrosis through targeted and sustained delivery of biologically active substances. PPAA hydrogel was prepared by free radical polymerization, followed by its porosity and swelling determination. The results depicted the porous nature of PPAA hydrogel and improved swelling properties at pH 7.4, confirming its drug delivery promise. The polyphenolic-enriched S. urticifolia extracts of leaf and flower were loaded onto PPAA hydrogel, and the loading efficiency was 87% (leaf) and 62.5% (flower). Moreover, slow-release studies showed controlled and prolonged release of polyphenols for 7 days. The polyphenolic-enriched hydrogel's microstructure was characterized using SEM, FTIR, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). SEM results revealed a highly porous structure of polyphenol enriched PPAA hydrogel, while FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups such as OH group of carboxylic acid, aliphatic CH2 stretching due to acrylic acid grafting with pectin, CO stretching due to acid linkage with pectin, CH of aromatic ring, and CH of carboxylate salt in PPAA hydrogel. TGA of PPAA hydrogel showed its stability up to 488°C. Additionally, the S. urticifolia extract loaded PPAA hydrogel displayed significant antibacterial properties and minimum inhibitory concentrations against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In vivo studies carried out on rats demonstrated that polyphenolic enriched PPAA hydrogel significantly attenuates liver and kidney fibrosis. Therefore, it is concluded from the present study that loading of polyphenolic enriched extract from leaves and flower of S. urticifolia enhanced the biomedical applications of PPAA hydrogel. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The PPAA hydrogel developed in this study exhibits a highly porous structure and improved swelling properties at physiological pH (7.4), making it an excellent candidate for drug delivery systems. S. urticifolia extracts, rich in polyphenols, were successfully incorporated into the PPAA hydrogel with high loading efficiencies of 87% for leaf and 62.5% for flower extracts. Loading of polyphenolic enriched extracts of S. urticifolia onto PPAA enhanced its biological activities such as antibacterial, hepatoprotective, and reno-protective activities as depicted by in vitro and in vivo studies.

Evaluation of drug release efficiency and antibacterial property of a pH-responsive dextran-based silver nanocomposite hydrogel

The bioavailability of curcumin (CUR), a highly lipophilic and commonly used anticancer drug, is mainly affected by its poor solubility in aqueous environment and quick metabolism. These challenges can be met by employing delivery systems. Nanocomposite materials have been used as delivery systems to enhance the solubility and dissolution rate of the drug. This study aims to develop dextran-graft-poly(4-acryloylmorpholine) silver nanocomposite using a microwave-assisted method to evaluate its drug-release efficiency and antimicrobial activity. The materials were characterized by FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, HR-TEM, TGA, and BET techniques. Drug loading and release efficiency were evaluated using CUR as the model drug. The swelling and drug release studies were conducted in buffer solutions of pH 1.2 and 7.4. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were employed to evaluate the antibacterial activity. The cytotoxicity was assessed by MTT assay against the breast MCF-10. Higher swelling and drug release were observed at pH 1.2 than 7.4. Nanocomposite hydrogel exhibited antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains. Cytotoxicity study proved the safety of the developed matrix. The results suggest the developed nanocomposite hydrogel to be a promising polymer matrix for the sustained release of CUR for cancer treatment that requires infectious control.

Enhanced dye sequestration with natural polysaccharides-based hydrogels: A review

Due to the expansion of industrial activities, the concentration of dyes in water has been increasing. The dire need to remove these pollutants from water has been heavily discussed. This study focuses on the reproducible and sustainable solution for wastewater treatment and dye annihilation challenges. Adsorption has been rated the most practical way of the several decolorization procedures due to its minimal initial investment, convenient utility, and high-performance caliber. Hydrogels, which are three-dimensional polymer networks, are notable because of their potential to regenerate, biodegrade, absorb bulky amounts of water, respond to stimuli, and have unique morphologies. Natural polysaccharide hydrogels are chosen over synthetic ones because they are robust, bioresorbable, non-toxic, and cheaply accessible. This study has covered six biopolymers, including chitosan, cellulose, pectin, sodium alginate, guar gum, and starch, consisting of their chemical architecture, origins, characteristics, and uses. The next part describes these polysaccharide-based hydrogels, including their manufacturing techniques, chemical alterations, and adsorption effectiveness. It is deeply evaluated how size and shape affect the adsorption rate, which has not been addressed in any prior research. To assist the readers in identifying areas for further research in this subject, limitations of these hydrogels and future views are provided in the conclusion.

Synthesizing pectin-crosslinked gum ghatti hydrogel for efficient adsorptive removal of malachite green

Pectin-crosslinked gum ghatti hydrogel (PGH) has been synthesized utilizing pectin and gum ghatti through an uncomplicated and inexpensive copolymerization method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-elemental mapping), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization techniques have been employed to determine various structural, chemical and compositional characteristics of fabricated PGH. Three different weight ratios (1:1, 2:1, or 1:2 for pectin and gum ghatti, respectively) were employed to synthesize three distinct types of PGH. Swelling studies has been done to determine the best ratios for PGH fabrication. PGH has been assessed as an adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. The effects of PGH dosage (100-400 mg/L), dye concentration (10-160 mg/L), pH (2-9 pH), adsorption time (0-480 min), and temperature (25-55 °C) has been examined through batch solutions. According to Langmuir isotherm analysis, the maximum adsorption capacity is 658.1 mg/g. By using pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm, the adsorption process could be well explained. After five consecutive cycles, PGH had an adsorption percentage of 86.917 % for the malachite green dye. It is safe for the environment and may be used to remove malachite green (MG) dye from aqueous solutions.

Synthesis of oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose-chitosan and its composite films with SiC and SiC@SiO2 nanoparticles for methylene blue dye adsorption

The cationic methylene blue (MB) dye sequestration was studied by using oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose-chitosan (OCMC-CS) and its composite films with silicon carbide (OCMC-CS-SiC), and silica-coated SiC nanoparticles (OCMC-CS-SiC@SiO2). The resulting composite films were characterized through various analytical techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The dye adsorption properties of the synthesized composite films were comprehensively investigated in batch experiments and the effect of parameters such as contact time, initial dye concentration, catalyst dosages, temperature, and pH were systematically evaluated. The results indicated that the film's adsorption efficiency was increased by increasing the contact time, catalyst amount, and temperature, and with a decreased initial concentration of dye solution. The adsorption efficiency was highest at neutral pH. The experimental results demonstrated that OCMC-CS films have high dye adsorption capabilities as compared to OCMC-CS-SiC, and OCMC-CS-SiC@SiO2. Additionally, the desorption investigation suggested that the adsorbents are successfully regenerated. Overall, this study contributes to the development of sustainable and effective adsorbent materials for dye removal applications. These films present a promising and environmentally friendly approach to mitigate dye pollution from aqueous systems.

Preparation of amphoteric double network hydrogels based on low methoxy pectin: Adsorption kinetics and removal of anionic and cationic dyes

The objective of this research was to devise a functional hydrogel was synthesized using pectin (PE), acrylic acid (AA), dimethyldiallyl ammonium chloride (DC), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), designed to adsorb both cationic and anionic dyes concurrently. The low methoxy pectin formed double network hydrogel through chemical and physical crosslinking with AA and PVA respectively. DC is combined into the hydrogel system through copolymerization reaction. Analysis of hydrogel's physicochemical properties was conducted using techniques such as infrared spectroscopy, texture analysis, thermogravimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Dyes adsorption studies showed that the LP/AA/DC/PVA-2 hydrogel, prepared at the molar ratio of AA to DC of 1:2, exhibited higher adsorption efficiency for methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR). Kinetics and isotherms studies indicated that the adsorption behavior conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. By the Langmuir isotherm fitting, the maximum adsorption capacities of MB and CR by LP/AA/DC/PVA-2 were recorded to be 222.65 mg/g and 316.46 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption mechanism is dominated by the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Further, the adsorption and desorption experiments demonstrated that LP/AA/DC/PVA-2 hydrogel have excellent reusability.

Preparation 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde cross-linked Fe3O4@chitosan-polyacrylamide nanocomposite for removal of everzol black from aqueous solutions

In this study, new 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde linked Fe₃O₄/chitosan-polyacrylamide nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@CS@Am@Nph) were prepared. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized by (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM) and Termogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde modified Fe₃O₄@CS@Am@Nph nanocomposite was used as an effective adsorbent for removal of everzol black from aqueous solutions by batch adsorption procedure. The effects of important parameters on the surface absorption process of everzol black dye, including pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial dye concentration were studied. The Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption models were used to describe adsorption isotherms and constants. The equilibrium results revealed that the adsorption behavior of the everzol black dye on the Fe₃O₄@CS@Am@Nph nanocomposite fitted well with the Langmuir model. On the basis of the Langmuir analysis, the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of the Fe₃O₄@CS@Am@Nph for everzol black was found to be 63.69 mg/g. The kinetic studies indicated that adsorption in all cases to be a pseudo second-order process. Further, the thermodynamic studies showed the adsorption to be a spontaneous and endothermic process.

A review on remediation of dye adulterated system by ecologically innocuous "biopolymers/natural gums-based composites"

The mitigation of wastewater exploiting biopolymers/natural gums-based composites is an appealing research theme in today's scenario. The following review presents a comprehensive description of the polysaccharides derived from biopolymers (chitosan, collagen, cellulose, starch, pectin, lignin, and alginate) and natural gums (guar, gellan, carrageenan, karaya, moringa oliefera, tragacanth, and xanthan gum). These biopolymers/natural gums-based composites depicted excellent surface functionality, non-toxicity, economic and environmental viability, which corroborated them as potential candidates in the decontamination process. The presence of -OH, -COOH, and -NH functional groups in their backbone rendered them tailorable for modification/functionalization, and anchor an array of pollutants via electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and Van der Waals forces. Further, due to these functional moieties, these bio-based composites revealed an excellent adsorption capacity than conventional adsorbents. This review provides an overview of the classification of biopolymers/natural gums based on their origin, different ways of their modification, and the remediation of dye-contaminated aqueous environments employing diverse bio-based adsorbents. The isotherm, kinetic modelling along with thermodynamics of the adsorption process is discussed. Additionally, the reusable efficacy of these bio-adsorbents is reviewed.

Past, present and future of biomedical applications of dextran-based hydrogels: A review

This review extensively surveys the biomedical applications of hydrogels containing dextran. Dextran has gained much attention as a biomaterial due to its distinctive properties such as biocompatibility, non-toxicity, water solubility and biodegradability. It has emerged as a critical constituent of hydrogels for biomedical applications including drug delivery devices, tissue engineering scaffolds and biosensor materials. The benefits, challenges and potential prospects of dextran-based hydrogels as biomaterials are highlighted in this review.

Recent advancements in engineered biopolymeric-nanohybrids: A greener approach for adsorptive-remediation of noxious metals from aqueous matrices

Industrial wastewater is causing serious health problems due to presence of large concentrations of toxic metals. Removal of these metals is still a big challenge using pristine natural biopolymers due to their low surface area, water solubility, and poor recovery. Developing biopolymeric composites with other materials has attained attention because they possess a high surface area and structural porosity, high reactivity, and less water solubility. In simple words, biopolymeric nanohybrids have great adsorption capacity for heavy metals. Biopolymeric materials are abundant, low cost, biodegradable, and possess different functional moieties (carboxyl, amine, hydroxyl, and carbonyl) which play a vital role to adsorb metal ions through various inter-linkages (i.e., electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, ion exchange, chelation, etc.). Biopolymeric nanohybrids have been proven a potent tool in environmental remediation such as the abatement of heavy metal ions from polluted water. Herein, we have reported the adsorption potential of various biopolymers (cellulose, chitosan, pectin, gelatin, and silk proteins) for the removal of heavy metals. This review discusses the suitability of biopolymeric nanohybrids as an adsorbent for heavy metals, their synthesis, modification, adsorption potential, and adsorption mechanism along with best fitted thermodynamic and kinetic models. The influence of pH, contact time, and adsorbent dose on adsorption potential has also been discussed in detail. Lastly, the challenges, research gaps and recommendations have been presented. This review concludes that biopolymers in combination with other materials such as metal-based nanoparticles, clay, and carbon-based materials are excellent materials to remove metallic ions from wastewater. Significant adsorption of heavy metals was obtained at a moderate pH (5-6). Contact time and adsorbent dose also affect the adsorption of heavy metals in certain ways. The Pseudo-first order model fits the data for the initial period of the first step of the reaction. Kinetic studies of different adsorption processes of various biopolymeric nanohybrids described that for majority of bionanohybrids, Pseudo-second order fitted the experimental data very well. Functionalized biopolymeric nanohybrids being biodegradable, environment friendly, cost-effective materials have great potential to adsorb heavy metal ions. These may be the future materials for environmental remediation.

Preparation of hydrogels based on pectin with different esterification degrees and evaluation of their structure and adsorption properties

In this study, pectin (Pe) with different esterification degrees was used as raw materials to prepared hydrogel adsorbents via free radical polymerization. The effect of Pe esterification degree on hydrogel structure and adsorption performance was studied by FTIR, SEM and XPS characterization and copper ion adsorption experiment. The results demonstrated that the carboxyl group in the hydrogels was bonded to Cu²⁺ through electrostatic force and coordination, which was an important factor in its adsorption capacity. The hydrogels prepared from Pe with low esterification degree had finer pores and higher carboxyl content, so the adsorption capacity on both water and Cu²⁺ was stronger. The preparation of hydrogels from low-ester Pe was more conducive to the adsorption of copper ions. Besides, the adsorption behavior of the hydrogels on Cu²⁺ was investigated through the adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics. The results indicated that the adsorption kinetics of the hydrogels was in accordance with the quasi-second-order model. The adsorption of Cu²⁺ by hydrogels was the result of physical and chemical adsorption, which was endothermic under natural condition, and a higher temperature will result in more favorable spontaneous adsorption.

Emulsion-Templated, Magnetic, Hydrophilic-Oleophobic Composites for Controlled Water Removal

Emulsion-templated, hydrophilic-oleophobic porous materials are promising for the removal of a small amount of water from oil-water mixtures, but the maneuver and complete collection of these porous materials are challenging. Herein, we report the fabrication of magnetic, hydrophilic-oleophobic polyHIPE composites from reactive Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle-stabilized high internal phase emulsions through simultaneous bulk polymerization of water-soluble monomers and interface-catalyzed polycondensation of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane. The resulting composites were hydrophilic-oleophobic, with water droplets rapidly absorbed (within 20 s), and exhibited designable magnetic responsiveness. The hydrophilicity-oleophobicity enabled water to be removed through selective absorption from oil-water mixtures (including surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions), with a high separation rate over 99%. The magnetic-responsiveness enabled both the dry and the swollen composites to be maneuvered in a remote and contactless manner and to be fully collected. Therefore, the magnetic, hydrophilic-oleophobic polyHIPE composites are excellent candidates for the removal of water from water-oil mixtures with complete collection.

Preparation and application of polyethyleneimine-modified corncob magnetic gel for removal of Pb(ii) and Cu(ii) ions from aqueous solution

As a biomass resource, corncob is a kind of agricultural by-product with wide sources and low cost. Because its composition contains a large number of functional polymers such as cellulose, chitosan, and semi chitosan, corncob can be chemically modified to prepare a variety of adsorption materials. In this study, a magnetic gel material (PEI-CC@Fe₃O₄) consisting of corncob modified by glutaraldehyde-crosslinked polyethyleneimine (PEI) was successfully prepared and applied to the adsorption of heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions. The structure, thermal stability, and adsorption of heavy metal ions of the magnetic gel material (PEI-CC@Fe₃O₄) were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction phase analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that PEI was crosslinked to the corncob through Aldol reaction and Schiff-base reaction. The heavy metal ion adsorption experiment showed that the PEI-CC@Fe₃O₄ had better adsorption toward divalent copper ions and divalent lead ions at 303 K, and the maximum adsorption capacities reached 459.4 mg g⁻¹ and 290.8 mg g⁻¹, respectively. Moreover, the study of isothermal adsorption and adsorption kinetics shows that the adsorption process is pseudo-second-order kinetics model adsorption, which belongs to Langmuir isothermal adsorption. Such excellent adsorption performance will contribute to the application of corncob biomass materials in industrial polluted wastewater.

A kind of magnetic gel material was synthesized by cross-linking PEI modified chitosan and corncob biomass with good adsorption properties of heavy metal ions.

Heavy Metal Adsorption Using Magnetic Nanoparticles for Water Purification: A Critical Review

Research on contamination of groundwater and drinking water is of major importance. Due to the rapid and significant progress in the last decade in nanotechnology and its potential applications to water purification, such as adsorption of heavy metal ion from contaminated water, a wide number of articles have been published. An evaluating frame of the main findings of recent research on heavy metal removal using magnetic nanoparticles, with emphasis on water quality and method applicability, is presented. A large number of articles have been studied with a focus on the synthesis and characterization procedures for bare and modified magnetic nanoparticles as well as on their adsorption capacity and the corresponding desorption process of the methods are presented. The present review analysis shows that the experimental procedures demonstrate high adsorption capacity for pollutants from aquatic solutions. Moreover, reuse of the employed nanoparticles up to five times leads to an efficiency up to 90%. We must mention also that in some rare occasions, nanoparticles have been reused up to 22 times.

Evaluation of gum ghatti-g-poly(itaconic acid) magnetite nanocomposite as an adsorbent material for water purification

A porous hydrogel nanocomposite has been made by grafting poly(itaconic acid) on the polysaccharide, gum ghatti and by embedding magnetite nanoparticles in the copolymer gel matrix. This novel functional material Ggh-g-PIA/Fe₃O₄ was characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDS, XRD, BET, Zeta potential measurements and VSM techniques. The nanocomposite possesses mesoporous structure with high surface area and exhibits super-paramagnetic behavior due to the presence of magnetite nanoparticles. The hydrogel nanocomposite was evaluated as an adsorbent material for removal of dyes and divalent metal ions. Significant adsorption capacities of 410.2, 387.6, 416.5 and 401.4 mg g^-1 towards methylene blue, rhodamine 6G, Cu (II) and Hg (II) ions respectively were observed. The adsorption isotherms were well described by the Freundlich isotherm model and kinetic studies demonstrated the adsorption to be a pseudo second order kinetic process. Intraparticle diffusion model suggested adsorption to occur by a multi-step diffusion process. Thermodynamic studies indicated a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. Further, the desorption study indicated the possibility of successful regeneration of the adsorbent. A high removal efficiency, recyclability, convenient recovery after use due to the magnetic nature makes this polysaccharide based nanocomposite an environment friendly adsorbent material for water purification.

Novel green chitosan-pectin gel beads for the removal of Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Chitosan-pectin gel beads (CPBs) were synthesized via a facile and green method and applied to remove heavy metals from aqueous solution. The structural characteristics of CPBs were investigated by SEM and FTIR, the mechanical strength of CPBs was measured by Texture Analyzer and the stability of CPBs was evaluated in acidic solution. To study the adsorption characteristics, the effect of pH, contact time, initial heavy metals concentration, temperature, adsorption mechanism and regeneration were systematically investigated. The adsorption kinetics fitted well pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms were well described by Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II) were 169.4, 177.6, 208.5 and 266.5 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption-desorption experiments revealed that the CPBs exhibited a great reusability. Thus, the synthesized CPBs in this study had the potential to be utilized as an environment-friendly and green adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals.

Hybrid nanocomposite of kappa-carrageenan and magnetite as adsorbent material for water purification

A novel polysaccharide based hydrogel; kappa-carrageenan grafted with N-hydroxyethylacrylamide (κC-g-PHEAA) was synthesized via microwave assisted free radical polymerization process. A hybrid nanocomposite has also been made by incorporation of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles into the κC-g-PHEAA network. The materials were characterized by FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, BET and VSM techniques. The nanocomposite exhibited super-paramagnetic behavior. The κC-g-PHEAA and κC-g-PHEAA/Fe₃O₄ presented significant adsorption capacity towards cationic dyes, methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine 6G (R6G); and metal ions, Cu(II) and Hg(II) from aqueous solution. The magnetite nanoparticles enhance the adsorption characteristics of the hydrogel and enables easy separation of the adsorbent with an external magnetic field. Adsorption process is observed to follow both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models for R6G and Freundlich isotherm model for MB, Cu(II) and Hg(II). The adsorption was found to be a pseudo first order process for MB and pseudo second order process for R6G, Cu(II) and Hg(II). Thermodynamic studies have shown the adsorption of dyes and metal ions to be spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The desorption studies revealed the efficient recovery of adsorbate species. The study indicates that the synthesized adsorbents have potential applications for the removal of dyes and metal ions from wastewater.

Reusable Magnetic Nanoparticle Immobilized Nitrogen-Containing Ligand for Classified and Easy Recovery of Heavy Metal Ions

Functionalized Tris[2-(dimethylamino) ethyl] amine (Me₆TREN) ligands tethered-Fe₃O₄@Me₆TREN nanoparticles (NPs) with a size of 150 nm were prepared to achieve classified and easy recovery of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The preparation of such NPs related to sequential silane ligand exchange and a following cure and Schiff base reactions for Fe₃O₄ NPs. Fe₃O₄@Me₆TREN NPs as an effective nano-adsorbent of heavy metals exhibited significant differences in maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(III) (61.4 mg/g), Cu(II) (245.0 mg/g), Pb(II) (5.3 mg/g), and Cd(II) (1136.2 mg/g), in favor of classified removal of heavy metals from wastewater. Furthermore, Fe₃O₄@Me₆TREN NPs can be regenerated by desorbing metal ions from NP surfaces eluted with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-Na₂) aqueous, which endows such NPs promising potency as new nano-vectors for the removal of heavy metals.

Novel cytokine-loaded PCL-PEG scaffold composites for spinal cord injury repair

Severe spinal cord injury (SCI) always leads to permanent sensory and motor dysfunction. However, the therapeutic effects of current treatment methods, including high dose methylprednisolone, surgical interventions and rehabilitative care, are far from satisfactory. In recent years, cellular, molecular, tissue engineering and rehabilitative training have shown promising results in animal models. Poly-ε-caprolacton (PCL) - based hydrogel composite system has been considered as a promising strategy to direct the axon growth and mimic the properties of natural extracellular matrix. In this study, we found the addition of the fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) to the hydrogel induces the production of axon growth-supportive substrates. The addition of the glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) to the hydrogel further induces axon directional growth. This "five-in-one" composite scaffold, referred to as PCL/PEG/FGF2/EGF/GDNF, improved the locomotor function in rats 8 weeks after spinal cord injury (SCI) after implantation in transected spinal cord. Furthermore, histological assessment indicated that the designed composite scaffold guided the neuronal regeneration and promoted the production of axon growth-supportive substrates, providing a favorable biological microenvironment. Our novel composite scaffold provides a promising therapeutic method for SCI.
