Bioinspired Multifunctional Silver Nanoparticles for Optical Sensing Applications: A Sustainable Approach

Silver nanoparticles developed via biosynthesis are the most fascinating nanosized particles and encompassed with excellent physicochemical properties. The bioinspired nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes have attracted huge attention due to their stability, low cost, environmental friendliness, and use of less hazardous chemicals. This is an ideal method for synthesizing a range of nanosized metal particles from plants and biomolecules. Optical biosensors are progressively being fabricated for the attainment of sustainability by using opportunities offered by nanotechnology. This review focuses mainly on tuning the optical properties of the metal nanoparticles for optical sensing to explore the importance and applications of bioinspired silver nanoparticles. Further, this review deliberates the role of bioinspired silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in biomedical, agricultural, environmental, and energy applications. Profound insight into the antimicrobial properties of these nanoparticles is also appreciated. Tailor-made bioinspired nanoparticles with effectuating characteristics can unsurprisingly target tumor cells and distribute enwrapped payloads intensively. Existing challenges and prospects of bioinspired Ag NPs are also summarized. This review is expected to deliver perceptions about the progress of the next generation of bioinspired Ag NPs and their outstanding performances in various fields by promoting sustainable practices for fabricating optical sensing devices.

Utilization of carbon-coated ZrO2/Mn-Mg-Zn ferrites nanostructures for the adsorption of Cs (I) and Sr (II) from the binary system: kinetic and equilibrium studies

Carbon-coated ZrO2/Mn-Mg-Zn ferrites nanostructures (CZ-FN) have been prepared as a new inorganic sorbent to remove Cs (I) and Sr (II) from a waste stream. Adsorption of Cs (I) and Sr (II) has been implemented considering different noteworthy parameters, for example, shaking time and the optimum time achieved high adsorption capacity of both ions [103 and 41 mg/g for Sr (II) and Cs (I)] was found 30 min. Also, the impact of pH values was studied; the best pH value for the adsorption process is pH 6. The adsorption saturation capacity of CZ-FN is 420.22 and 250.45 mg/g for strontium and cesium, respectively. The solubility percentage of CZ-FN was calculated utilizing diverse molarities from HNO3, HCl, and NaOH as eluents, the obtained data reveals an increase in the solubility percentage with more increase in the molarity of the eluents. The elevation in the solubility percentage follows the following order; HNO3 < HCl < NaOH. The kinetic studies were applied using the nanolinear form of different kinetic models; it was found that the adsorption process obeys the nonlinear pseudo-second-order. According to equilibrium studies, the Langmuir model has been more accurate than the Freundlich model for adsorption in the case of binary systems. The values of Di for the strontium and cesium are 10-10 m2/s, which displays the chemisorption nature of this process. The greatest values of the desorption process for the strontium and cesium are 96.87% and 94.43 by 0.3 M of HNO3. This indicated that the carbon-coated ZrO2/Mn-Mg-Zn ferrites could be regenerated and recycled to remove strontium and cesium ions from waste streams.

Gamma radiation-induced synthesis of novel PVA/Ag/CaTiO3 nanocomposite film for flexible optoelectronics

A flexible nanocomposite film based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), silver nanoparticles, and calcium titanate (CaTiO₃) was synthesized using gamma radiation induced-reduction. Temperature-dependent structural, optical, DC electrical conductivity, electric modulus, and dielectric properties of PVA/Ag/CaTiO₃ nanocomposite film were investigated. The XRD pattern proved the successful preparation of the nanocomposite film. Also, as the temperature increases, the average crystallite sizes of CaTiO₃ and Ag nanoparticles decrease from 19.8 to 9.7 nm and 25 to 14.8 nm, respectively. Further, the optical band gap increased from 5.75 to 5.84 eV with increasing temperature. The thermal stability is improved, and the semiconductor behavior for PVA/Ag/CaTiO₃ nanocomposite film is confirmed by thermal activation energy ΔE with values in the 0.11-0.8 eV range. Furthermore, the maximum barrier W_m value was found of 0.29 eV. PVA/Ag/CaTiO₃ nanocomposite film exhibits a semicircular arc originating from the material's grain boundary contributions for all temperatures. The optical, DC electrical conductivity, and dielectric properties of the PVA/Ag/CaTiO₃ nanocomposite film can be suitable for flexible electronic devices such as electronic chips, optoelectronics, and energy storage applications.

Co-application of organic amendments and Cd-tolerant rhizobacteria for suppression of cadmium uptake and regulation of antioxidants in tomato

Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a major environmental concern with well-reported adverse impacts on environment and living entities. It limits the productivity of agricultural crops due to its excessive entry to plant tissues, and subsequent toxic effects on their growth and physiology. Application of metal tolerant rhizobacteria in combination with organic amendments has shown beneficial impacts in sustaining plant growth, on account of amendments mediated decreased metal mobility via different functional groups, as well as provision of carbon to microorganisms. We evaluated the effect of organic amendments (compost and biochar) and Cd-tolerant rhizobacteria on growth, physiology, and Cd uptake in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Plants were grown under Cd contamination (2 mg kg^-1), and were supplemented with 0.5% w/w of compost and biochar along with rhizobacterial inoculation in pot culture. We observed a significant reduction in shoot length, fresh and dry biomass (37, 49 and 31%) and root attributes such as root length, fresh and dry weights (35, 38 and 43%). However, Cd tolerant PGPR strain 'J-62' along with compost and biochar (0.5% w/w) mitigated the Cd induced adverse impacts on different plant attributes and improved these attributes such as root and shoot lengths (112 and 72%), fresh (130 and 146%) and dry weights (119 and 162%) of tomato roots and shoots as compared to relative control treatment. Furthermore, we observed significant increments in different antioxidant activities such as SOD (54%), CAT (49%) and APX (50%) under Cd contamination. Combined application of 'J-62' strain and organic amendments also decreased Cd translocation towards different above-ground plant parts as was pragmatic in terms of bioconcentration and translocation factors of Cd, which indicated phyto-stabilization ability of our inoculated strain for Cd. Hence, Cd tolerant PGPR in combination with organic amendments can immobilize Cd in soil and thereby, can alleviate Cd induced adverse impacts on tomato growth.

Interactive Effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and Olive Solid Waste on Wheat under Arsenite Toxicity

Heavy metal such as arsenite (As^III) is a threat worldwide. Thus, to mitigate As^III toxicity on plants, we investigated the interactive effect of olive solid waste (OSW) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on wheat plants under As^III stress. To this end, wheat seeds were grown in soils treated with OSW (4% w/w), AMF-inoculation, and/or As^III treated soil (100 mg/kg soil). AMF colonization is reduced by As^III but to a lesser extent under As^III + OSW. AMF and OSW interactive effects also improved soil fertility and increased wheat plants' growth, particularly under As^III stress. The interactions between OSW and AMF treatments reduced As^III-induced H₂O₂ accumulation. Less H₂O₂ production consequently reduced As^III-related oxidative damages i.e., lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA) (58%), compared to As stress. This can be explained by the increase in wheat's antioxidant defense system. OSW and AMF increased total antioxidant content, phenol, flavonoids, and α-tocopherol by approximately 34%, 63%, 118%, 232%, and 93%, respectively, compared to As stress. The combined effect also significantly induced anthocyanins accumulation. The combination of OSW+AMF improved antioxidants enzymes activity, where superoxide dismutase (SOD, catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) were increased by 98%, 121%, 105%, 129%, and 110.29%, respectively, compared to As^III stress. This can be explained by induced anthocyanin percussors phenylalanine, cinamic acid and naringenin, and biosynthesic enzymes (phenylalanine aminolayse (PAL) and chalcone synthase (CHS)). Overall, this study suggested the effectiveness of OSW and AMF as a promising approach to mitigate As^III toxicity on wheat growth, physiology, and biochemistry.

Clinical Consequences for Individuals Treated with Tocilizumab for Serious COVID-19 Infection

There seem to currently be no therapeutic medications found for the severe coronavirus infection in 2019 (COVID-19). In light of this, it has been hypothesized that the immunomodulatory treatment known as tocilizumab can lessen the inflammatory response that occurs in the respiratory system, speed up the process of clinical benefit, lower the risk of death, and avert the need for ventilators. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) studied patients with a proven infection of SARS-CoV-2 and hyperinflammatory reactions. The inclusion criteria included fever (body temperature > 38 °C), pulmonary infiltrates, or supplemental oxygen. The patients received either conventional treatment with one dose of either tocilizumab (8 mg per kilogram of body weight) or conventional treatment only. The subjects were randomized to receive either treatment with a 1:1 ratio. A time-to-event test was conducted to determine the time to intubation or death. There was an insignificant difference between the investigated groups regarding the time to death, time to mechanical ventilation, and percentage of deaths. The conventional group's median (IQR) hospital length of stay was 4 (3-6) days, whereas the tocilizumab therapy group was 7 (4.75-10) days. There was a substantial difference in the mechanical ventilation rates in both groups, which were 17 (34%) and 28 (56%), respectively. In hospitalized patients with severe illness and COVID-19, tocilizumab was ineffective in preventing intubation or death. Trials must be larger, however, in order to exclude the potential benefits or harms.

Alleviation of Cadmium and Nickel Toxicity and Phyto-Stimulation of Tomato Plant L. by Endophytic Micrococcus luteus and Enterobacter cloacae

Cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) are two of the most toxic metals, wreaking havoc on human health and agricultural output. Furthermore, high levels of Cd and Ni in the soil environment, particularly in the root zone, may slow plant development, resulting in lower plant biomass. On the other hand, endophytic bacteria offer great promise for reducing Cd and Ni. Moreover, they boost plants’ resistance to heavy metal stress. Different bacterium strains were isolated from tomato roots. These isolates were identified as Micrococcus luteus and Enterobacter cloacae using 16SrDNA and were utilized to investigate their involvement in mitigating the detrimental effects of heavy metal stress. The two bacterial strains can solubilize phosphorus and create phytohormones as well as siderophores. Therefore, the objective of this study was to see how endophytic bacteria (Micrococcus luteus and Enterobactercloacae) affected the mitigation of stress from Cd and Ni in tomato plants grown in 50 μM Cd or Ni-contaminated soil. According to the findings, Cd and Ni considerably lowered growth, biomass, chlorophyll (Chl) content, and photosynthetic properties. Furthermore, the content of proline, phenol, malondialdehyde (MDA), H₂O₂, OH, O₂, the antioxidant defense system, and heavy metal (HM) contents were significantly raised under HM-stress conditions. However, endophytic bacteria greatly improved the resistance of tomato plants to HM stress by boosting enzymatic antioxidant defenses (i.e., catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, ascorbate peroxidase, lipoxygenase activity, and nitrate reductase), antioxidant, non-enzymatic defenses, and osmolyte substances such as proline, mineral content, and specific regulatory defense genes. Moreover, the plants treated had a higher value for bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) due to more extensive loss of Cd and Ni content from the soil. To summarize, the promotion of endophytic bacterium-induced HM resistance in tomato plants is essentially dependent on the influence of endophytic bacteria on antioxidant capacity and osmoregulation.

Phytotoxic effects of Acacia saligna dry leachates on germination, seedling growth, photosynthetic performance, and gene expression of economically important crops

The influence of dry leachates of Acasia saligna was tested on the seedling growth, photosynthesis, biochemical attributes, and gene expression of the economically important crops, including wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and arugula (Eruca sativa L.). Different concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%) of stem extract (SE) and leaf extract (LE) of A. saligna were prepared, and seedlings were allowed to grow in Petri plates for 8 days. The results showed that all plant species exhibited reduced germination rate, plant height, and fresh and dry weight due to leachates extracts of A. saligna. Moreover, the activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), exhibited differential regulation due to the extract treatment. The SOD was increased with increasing the concentration of extracts, while CAT and APX activities were decreased with increasing the extract concentrations. In addition, leachate extract treatment decrease chlorophyll content, photosynthesis, PSII activity, and water use efficiency, with evident effects at their higher concentrations. Furthermore, the content of proline, sugars, protein, total phenols, and flavonoids were reduced considerably due to leachates extract treatments. Furthermore, seedlings treated with high concentrations of LE increased the expression of genes. The present results lead to the conclusion that A. saligna contains significant allelochemicals that interfere with the growth and development of the tested crop species and reduced the crops biomass and negatively affected other related parameters. However, further studies are suggested to determine the isolation and purification of the active compounds present in A. saligna extracts.

Appraisal of kinetin spraying strategy to alleviate the harmful effects of UVC stress on tomato plants

Increasing ultraviolet (UV) radiation is causing oxidative stress that accounts for growth and yield losses in the present era of climate change. Plant hormones are useful tools for minimizing UV-induced oxidative stress in plants, but their putative roles in protecting tomato development under UVC remain unknown. Therefore, we investigated the underlying mechanism of pre-and post-kinetin (Kn) treatments on tomato plants under UVC stress. The best dose of Kn was screened in the preliminary experiments, and this dose was tested in further experiments. UVC significantly decreases growth traits, photosynthetic pigments, protein content, and primary metabolites (proteins, carbohydrates, amino acids) but increases oxidative stress biomarkers (lipid peroxidation, lipoxygenase activity, superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical, and hydrogen peroxide) and proline content. Treatment of pre-and post-kinetin spraying to tomato plants decreases UVC-induced oxidative stress by restoring the primary and secondary metabolites' (phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and anthocyanins) status and upregulating the antioxidant defense systems (non-enzymatic antioxidants as ascorbate, reduced glutathione, α-tocopherol as well as enzymatic antioxidants as superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-S-transferase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase). Thus, the application of Kn in optimum doses and through different modes can be used to alleviate UVC-induced negative impacts in tomato plants.

Applicability of Ash Wastes for Reducing Trace Element Content in Zea mays L. Grown in Eco-Diesel Contaminated Soil

Among the large group of xenobiotics released into the environment, petroleum derivatives are particularly dangerous, especially given continuing industrial development and the rising demand for fuel. As increasing amounts of fly ash and sewage sludge are released, it becomes necessary to explore new methods of reusing these types of waste as reclamation agents or nutrient sources. The present study examined how soil contamination with Eco-Diesel oil (0; 10; 20 cm3 kg−1 soil) affected the trace-element content in the aerial parts of maize. Coal and sludge ashes were used as reclamation agents. Our study revealed that diesel oil strongly affected the trace-element content in the aerial parts of maize. In the non-amended group, Eco-Diesel oil contamination led to higher accumulation of the trace elements in maize (with the exception of Pb and Ni), with Cu and Mn content increasing the most. The ashes incorporated into the soil performed inconsistently as a reclamation agent. Overall, the amendment reduced Mn and Fe in the aerial parts of maize while increasing average Cd and Cu levels. No significant effect was noted for the other elements.
