Abstract
Biochar-based fertilizers show promise in enhancing nutrient utilization and soil health, but their slow-release performance remains a challenge. Herein, hydrogel membranes incorporating iron oxide nanoparticles within a polyvinyl alcohol and starch matrix (Fe/PVA/ST) were synthesized. These membranes were utilized to coat compound fertilizer particles, with biochar powder applied to the outer layer to form what is known as Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs. The results revealed that Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs exhibit markedly improved slow-release performance compared to both PVA/ST-BSRFs lacking iron nanoparticles and commercial compound fertilizers. Within a 30-day period, the cumulative leaching ratios of N, P, and K from Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs with 0.75 % iron content were significantly lower compared to other tested fertilizers, with values of 22.87 %, 34.93 %, and 84.08 %, respectively. Furthermore, the incorporation of iron oxide nanoparticles into the PVA/ST membrane enhanced its swelling and water-retention properties without compromising its biodegradability. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the exceptional slow-release properties of Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs stem from a combination of nutrient diffusion control outside the membrane and the loose control mechanism of the membrane. Pot tests demonstrated that Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs effectively promoted the growth of chili plants while ensuring high utilization of N-P-K and improving the nutritional indices of chili fruits. Economic analysis further underscored the promising application prospects of Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs.

Abstract
It is an important task to construct intelligent packaging for meat freshness monitoring with good color stability and indication function. Herein, cobalt-based metal-organic framework nanomaterials (Co-MOF, ZIF-67) with antimicrobial and ammonia-sensitive properties were successfully synthesized and added into gelatin/agar (GA) matrix to develop highly stable intelligent films (GA/ZIF67). The incorporation of ZIF-67 nanoparticles enhanced the hydrophobicity (water contact angle >90°) and UV-blocking properties (close to 0.3 % at T280) of the films and endowed the films with excellent antimicrobial activity. The GA/ZIF67 films exhibited outstanding ammonia-sensitive functionality and color stability. More crucially, the ammonia-sensitive color-changing mechanism of ZIF-67 may be attributed to the slow etching effect of its crystal facets upon exposure to ammonia. With the gradual spoilage of beef, the color of the GA/ZIF67 film changes from blue-violet to gray-yellow/orange-red. In addition, the RGB value of the film collected by a mobile device App was used to quickly determine the freshness of beef, reducing individual variability in color perception. Overall, this work offers novel insights into exploring Co-MOF as a new type of indicator for developing a rapid and real-time beef freshness monitoring system, which has great potential for application in the intelligent packaging field.

Abstract
The fabrication of eco-friendly and high-performance composite materials has gained significant attention for multifunctional applications. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/starch composite films containing varying amounts of Ti3C2Tx MXene (2.5-10 wt%) were produced using a simple casting method. The impact of MXene nanoplatelets on the films' chemical structure and physical properties were thoroughly analysed. It was revealed that MXene formed hydrogen bonding with the polymer matrix and tended to align in the plane of the films. The mechanical properties of the PVA/starch blend were significantly improved with increasing MXene loading. With 10 wt% MXene, the Young's modulus (YM) and tensile strength (TS) increased by 669 % (from 255.7 to 1965.3 MPa) and 292 % (from 9.2 to 36.1 MPa), respectively. Additionally, the presence of MXene greatly improved the films' water and oxygen barrier properties, reducing water vapor permeability (WVP) by 91 % and oxygen permeability (OP) by 79 %. These improvements are attributed to the homogeneous dispersion of MXene within the blend and the interfacial interactions between the components. Furthermore, the PVA/starch/MXene composite films exhibited excellent recyclability, maintaining their mechanical and barrier properties even after recycling, demonstrating their potential for repeated use without performance loss. Overall, the developed composite films present a promising sustainable solution for applications in materials requiring advanced mechanical and barrier performance.

Abstract
The increasing demand for environmentally friendly food packaging solutions has driven extensive research on biodegradable materials, particularly thermoplastic starch (TPS), which is an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based plastics. Despite its eco-friendliness, TPS exhibits limitations, including inadequate mechanical and thermal properties, high water sensitivity, and low antibacterial activity. Although strategies such as chemical modification, blending, and compatibilizers have been employed to enhance TPS for functional packaging applications, they often fail to address these fundamental issues. A promising approach involves incorporating zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles, which significantly improve the mechanical strength, thermal stability, and antimicrobial properties of TPS. This review focuses on TPS-ZnO nanocomposites, a notable subcategory of bio-nanocomposites recognized for their enhanced functional properties in food packaging applications. It discusses the synthesis and properties of these nanocomposites, particularly their mechanical, thermal, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Moreover, this review explores the various applications of TPS-ZnO nanocomposites in active, intelligent, and sustainable food packaging, emphasizing their potential to address the pressing challenges of food waste and environmental impact.

Abstract
This study aimed to produce bio-nanocomposites based on Persian gum-starch using electrosprayed gliadin nanoparticles (EGNPs) containing cinnamon essential oil (CEO) to increase the shelf life of rainbow trout fillets and to model its in vitro release. The CEO with 5, 10, and 15 % w/w were loaded in the EGNPs. The EGNPs containing 10 % w/w CEO had the highest encapsulation efficiency (92.85 % ± 1.01 %) and uniform morphology. Field emission scanning electron microscopy showed that 10 % w/w EGNPs in the Persian gum-based films was accompanied by a uniform distribution of nanoparticles in the bio-nanocomposite. However, higher levels of nanoparticles (15 % w/w) were associated with forming local aggregates on the surface of bio-nanocomposites. Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed the successful encapsulation of CEO in the EGNPs and the successful placement of nanoparticles in the matrix. By integrating 10 % w/w of electrosprayed nanoparticles, the mechanical properties of bio-nanocomposites were significantly reinforced. The Peleg model was the best model describing the release behavior of the CEO from the designed structures, and the dominant mechanism affecting its release was the Fickian diffusion. Using bio-nanocomposites containing 10 % w/w of EGNPs containing CEO suppressed the growth of microorganisms and increased the shelf life of coated fillets.

Abstract
This study examines the impact of succinic anhydride (SA) modification (0-9 %) on the gel properties of casein. Upon succinylation, the surface hydrophobicity (H0) of casein initially increased before decreasing, achieving its peak at a degree of succinylation of 5.22 ± 0.16 %. The α-helix content rose to 14.13 ± 2.60 %, and the -OH peak shifted towards lower wavenumbers, suggesting enhanced hydrogen bonding within intra/intermolecular structures. The storage modulus in the rheological test escalated from 2160.11 Pa to 5047.60 Pa, and SEM analysis revealed that the optimally succinylated casein gel formed a denser and more stable gel network structure. Moreover, succinylated casein hydrogels demonstrated superior texture properties, swelling ability, and thermal stability. Molecular dynamics simulation (MD) results suggest that SA preferentially binds to LYS27 and LYS28 of β-casein via hydrogen bonds and amide bonds, respectively. The interaction between modified proteins is primarily governed by hydrogen bonds, aligning with FT-IR findings. PCA analysis identified a positive correlation between the ordered structure and gel performance. This research offers theoretical insights and reference data for modulating casein hydrogel properties through succinylation.

Abstract
The traditional starch-based intelligent freshness labels struggle to maintain long-term structural stability when exposed to moisture. To solve this problem, we prepared composite crosslinked labels using phytic acid for double crosslinking of corn starch and soybean isolate proteins, with anthocyanin serving as the chromogenic dye. The mechanical properties, hydrophobic characteristics, and pH responsivity of these crosslinked labels were assessed in this study. The prepared double-crosslinked labels showed reduced moisture content (15.96%), diminished swelling (147.21%), decreased solubility (28.55%), and minimized water permeability, which suggested that they have enhanced hydrophobicity and densification. The crosslinked labels demonstrated the ability to maintain morphological stability when immersed in water for 12 h. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the crosslinked labels were enhanced without compromising their pH-sensing capabilities, demonstrated a color response visible to the naked eye for milk and coconut water freshness monitoring, suggesting great potential for application in beverages freshness monitoring.

Abstract
The development of colorimetric ammonia-sensing smart packaging materials with real-time freshness detection ability are crucial for ensuring food safe. This research involved the construction of Cu-based framework (Cu-Phe) nanorods with colorimetric ammonia-sensing ability through an easy-to-perform aqueous solution method, and their subsequent utilization as nano inclusions in starch/sodium alginate (ST/SA) substrate to foster the creation of high-performance smart packaging materials. Research findings revealed that the addition of Cu-Phe nanorods (3, 6, 9 wt%) within ST/SA substrate led to the formation of compatible nanocomposite films with significantly augmented physical performance and functionality. Especially, the film containing 9 wt% Cu-Phe presented the highest tensile strength (30.32 MPa), elongation at break (19.12 %), UV-shielding efficacy (blocking >99 % of UV passage), water vapor barrier effectiveness (1.90 × 10-6 g/m·h·Pa) and oxygen barrier ability (2.26 × 10-3 g/m2·s). In addition, the developed ST/SA/Cu-Phe nanocomposite film possessed excellent antibacterial activity (over 99.9 %) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, superior colorimetric ammonia-sensing ability, and long-term colour stability. Also of note, the Cu-Phe added ST/SA nanocomposite film allowed for detecting prawn and pork freshness reduction in real-time via discernible colour transition, suggesting its extensive promise for smart packaging applications.

Abstract
Microbial contamination annually leads to substantial food resource loss. Effective food packaging can mitigate food contamination and waste, yet conventional materials such as plastics often lack bacteriostatic activity. This study aimed to synthesise FengycinA-M3@bacterial cellulose@polyvinyl alcohol composite hydrogels via dual cross-linking with hydrogen and borate bonding, with the goal of enhancing antibacterial properties and prolonging the preservation period of refrigerated chicken breast. The composite hydrogel was subjected to comprehensive characterisation for structural, mechanical, water absorption, slow peptide release, antimicrobial capacity, biocompatibility, and chicken breast freshness preservation. The results showed that the composite hydrogel had a porous network structure and excellent gel elasticity and biocompatibility. It was effective in inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and prolonged the storage time of frozen chicken breast for up to 12 days. These findings emphasise the potential of hydrogel food packaging to prolong storage periods and its suitability for food industry applications due to ease of manufacture.

Abstract
Allium mongolicum Regel is prone to rapid senescence and quality deterioration during postharvest storage. Herein, polyvinyl alcohol/pullulan/ZnO nanoparticles (PVA/PUL/ZnO-Nps) composite films were prepared via solution casting and studied to analyze the effects of ZnO-Nps on the PVA/PUL film matrix. Results revealed that the incorporation of suitable ZnO-Nps effectively reduced the light transmittance, improved water contact angle, water vapor permeability, and mechanical properties of the composite films, as well as enhanced their antimicrobial activity. The composite films were used for the postharvest preservation of A. mongolicum Regel. Results revealed that the PVA/PUL/ZnO-Nps film effectively reduced malondialdehyde accumulation content, superoxide radical generation rate, hydrogen peroxide content, improve the activity of related enzymes, and extend the storage time compared with that of polyethylene films. Therefore, the PVA/PUL/ZnO-Nps film can be used as a novel packaging material for the postharvest preservation of A. mongolicum Regel.

Abstract
The current work explored a comparative study of biodegradable jamun seed/polyvinyl alcohol (JS) nanocomposites reinforced with varying concentrations of ZnO and Ag2O nano-fillers. The effect of spherical shaped ZnO and Ag2O nanoparticles (NPs) on the on structure, morphology, swelling and solubility, crystallinity and mechanical properties together with biodegradation performance of the composite films was fully studied. SEM results showed uniform distribution of ZnO and Ag2O nanofillers into the JS matrix and dense or compact nanocomposite films were formed. JS-ZnO and JS-Ag2O nanocomposites with 0.5 wt% ZnO and Ag2O content showed maximum crystallinity i.e. 11.3 and 9.58 %, respectively, as determined by XRD. When compared to the virgin JS film (8.41 MPa), the resultant JS-ZnO-0.5 and JS-Ag2O-0.5 nanocomposites showed significantly enhanced tensile strength (35.7 MPa, 29.2 MPa), elongation at break (15.42 %, 14.62 %) and Young's modulus (141 MPa, 126 MPa), respectively. Also, reduced swelling (120.4 % and 116.1 %) and solubility ratio (17.45 % and 18.42 %) was observed for JS-ZnO-0.5 and JS-Ag2O-0.5 nanocomposites, respectively. Biodegradation results showed that maximum degradation (88 %) was achieved for the JS film within 180 days of soil burial whereas JS-ZnO-0.1 and JS-Ag2O-0.1 nanocomposites showed 78 % and 72 % degradation within 180 days, respectively.

Abstract
In this research, a novel active food packaging material was developed by blending starch, chitosan, and plant-based mucilage with zinc oxide nanoparticles. The polymeric nanocomposite film, created by incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles into the mixture using a straightforward approach, was analyzed for its structural and functional attributes using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA/DSC. These analyses revealed a robust interaction between the polymers' functional groups and the nanoparticles, forming a stable film. The film's mechanical properties, including tensile strength and Young's modulus, were high. It also showed reduced wettability and water solubility, enhancing water resistance. The biodegradability rate was 100 %. Antibacterial tests against Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. showed significant inhibition zones of 26 mm and 30 mm, respectively, demonstrating strong antibacterial effectiveness. The film's non-target toxicity was assessed through phytotoxicity experiments on Vigna angularis and soil nutrient evaluations, with no negative impact on plant growth or soil health observed. These results indicate that this nanocomposite is a safe, biocompatible option for food packaging.

Abstract
A spindle-like Cu-based framework (Cu-Trp, Trp = L-Tryptophan) nanocrystal with ammonia-responsiveness was fabricated via simple aqueous solution approach, and it was subsequently explored as a functional compatibilizer of carboxymethyl starch/polyvinyl alcohol (CMS/PVA) blend toward constructing high-performance intelligent packaging films. The results showed that incorporation of Cu-Trp nanocrystal into CMS/PVA blend resulted in significant promotions regarding to the compatibility, mechanical strength (42.92 MPa), UV-blocking (with UV transmittance of only 2.4%), and water vapor barrier effectiveness of the blend film. Besides, the constructed CMS/PVA/Cu-Trp nanocomposite film exhibited superb long-term color stability, favorable antibacterial capacity (over 98.0%) toward both E. coli and S. aureus bacteria, as well as color change ability under ammonia environment. Importantly, the application trial confirmed that the CMS/PVA/Cu-Trp nanocomposite film is capable of visually monitoring shrimp spoilage during storage. These results implied that the CMS/PVA/Cu-Trp nanocomposite film holds tremendous potential as an intelligent active packaging material.

Abstract
Smart packaging material capable of real-time monitoring of food freshness is essential for ensuring food safe. At present, colorimetric ammonia-sensing smart film often possesses issues with complicated production, high cost, and inferior long-term colour stability. Herein, Zinc‑copper bimetallic organic framework (ZnCu-BTC, BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate acid) nanorods with colorimetric ammonia-responsiveness were synthesized by adopting facile aqueous solution method, which were then explored as nano inclusions in potato starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PS/PVA) composite film towards developing high-performance smart packaging material. The results demonstrated that the introduction of ZnCu-BTC nanorods within PS/PVA brought about remarkable improvement in blend compatibility, accompanied by a boost in tensile strength to 47.2 MPa, as well as enhanced ultraviolet (UV) blocking efficacy (over 95.0 %). Additionally, the barrier properties of PS/PVA film against water vapor and oxygen were fortified due to the addition of ZnCu-BTC. More importantly, the developed PS/PVA/ZnCu-BTC nanocomposite film displayed satisfactory antibacterial activity (over 99 %) against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), favorable colorimetric ammonia-sensing ability, and long-term colour stability. The ZnCu-BTC incorporated PS/PVA nanocomposite film could grant real-time detection of prawn freshness decline via remarkable colour change, indicating vast promise for smart food packaging applications.

Abstract
Traditional packaging materials feed the growing global food protection. However, these packaging materials are not conducive to environment and have not the ability to kill bacteria. Herein, a green and simple strategy is reported for food packaging protection and long-term antibacterial using carboxymethylcellulose-based photothermal film (CMC@CuS NPs/PVA) that consists of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) immobilized copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). With satisfied oxygen transmittance (0.03 cc/m2/day) and water vapor transmittance (163.3 g/m2/day), the tensile strength, tear strength and burst strength reached to 3401.2 N/m, 845.7 mN and 363.6 kPa, respectively, which could lift 4.5 L of water. The composite film had excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and photothermal stability. Under the irradiation of near infrared (NIR), it can rapidly heated up to 197 °C within 25 s. The antibacterial analysis showed that the inhibition rate of composite film against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) could all reach >99 %. Furthermore, the synthesized CuS NPs was well immobilized and the residual rate of copper kept 98.7 % after 10 days. Noticeably, the composite film can preserve freshness of strawberries for up to 6 days. Therefore, the composite film has potential application for food antibacterial protection.

Abstract
The current study explores biodegradable packaging materials that have high food quality assurance, as food deterioration is mostly caused by UV degradation and oxidation, which can result in bad flavor and nutrition shortages. Thus, new multifunctional zinc oxide nanoparticles/tannic acid (ZnO@TA) with antioxidant and antibacterial activities were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CH) composite films with different ratios (1%, 3%, and 5% based on the total dry weight of the film) via a solution blending method in a neutral aqueous solution. Additionally, ZnO nanoparticles have unique antibacterial mechanisms through the generation of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) that may lead to intensify pathogen resistance to conventional antibacterial agents. Thus, minimizing the negative effects caused by excessive levels of ROS may be possible by developing unique, multifunctional ZnO nanoparticles with antioxidant potential via coordination bond between tannic acid and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO@TA). ZnO@TA nanoparticles were examined using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of the incorporation of ZnO@TA nanoparticles on the barrier, mechanical, thermal, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and UV blocking characteristics of chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (ZnO@TA@CH/PVA) films was investigated. The lowest water vapor and oxygen permeability and the maximum antioxidant capacity% are 31.98 ± 1.68 g mm/m2 kPa day, 0.144 ± 5.03 × 10-2 c.c/m2.day, and 69.35 ± 1.6%, respectively, which are related to ZnO@TA(50)@CH/PVA. Furthermore, ZnO@TA(50)@CH/PVA film exhibits the maximum UV shielding capacity of UVB (99.994). ZnO@TA(50) @PVA/CH films displayed better tensile strength and Young`s modulus of 48.72 ± 0.23 MPa and 2163.46 ± 61.4 MPa, respectively, than the other film formulations. However, elongation % at break exhibited the most reduced value of 19.62 ± 2.3%. ZnO@TA@CH/PVA film exhibits the largest inhibition zones of 11 ± 1.0, 12.3 ± 0.57, and 13.6 ± 0.57 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus flavus, and Candida albicans, respectively. In accordance with these results, ZnO@TA@CH/PVA films could be utilized for food preservation for the long-term.

Abstract
In recent years, how to improve the functional performance of food packaging materials has received increasing attention. One common inorganic material, nanometer zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs), has garnered significant attention due to its excellent antibacterial properties and sensitivity. Consequently, ZnO-NP-based functional packaging materials are rapidly developing in the food industry. However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive and systematic reviews on the use of ZnO-NPs as functional fillers in food packaging. In this review, we introduced the characteristics and antibacterial mechanism of ZnO-NPs, and paid attention to the factors affecting the antibacterial activity of ZnO-NPs. Furthermore, we systematically analyzed the application of intelligent packaging and antibacterial packaging containing ZnO-NPs in the food industry. At the same time, this paper also thoroughly investigated the impact of ZnO-NPs on various properties including thickness, moisture resistance, water vapor barrier, mechanical properties, optical properties, thermal properties and microstructure of food packaging materials. Finally, we discussed the migration and safety of ZnO-NPs in packaging materials. ZnO-NPs are safe and have negligible migration rates, simultaneously their sensitivity and antibacterial properties can be used to detect the quality changes of food during storage and extend its shelf life.

Abstract
This study aims to enhance the physical properties and color stability of anthocyanin-based intelligent starch films. Three dual-modified starches, namely crosslinked-oxidized starch (COS), acetylated distarch phosphate (ADSP), and hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate (HDSP), were utilized as film matrices. Aronia melanocarpa anthocyanins were incorporated through three different pre-treatments (free, spray-drying microencapsulation, and freeze-drying microencapsulation) to assess the prepared films' functionality, stability, and applicability. The results indicate that the ADSP film exhibited an approximately two-fold increase in elongation at break (EAB) compared to native starch film. Specifically, the ADSP film's water contact angle (WCA) reached 90°, demonstrating excellent flexibility and hydrophobicity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed stronger interactions between anthocyanins and the film matrix after microencapsulation. Furthermore, after 30 days of exposure to 37 °C heat and light radiation, the freeze-dried anthocyanin-based intelligent film (FDA film) exhibited minimal fading, displaying the highest stability among the tested films. Notably, during beef freshness monitoring, the intelligent films underwent significant color changes as the beef deteriorated. In conclusion, the developed FDA film, with its outstanding stability and responsive pH characteristics, holds immense potential as a novel packaging material for food applications.

Abstract
In recent years, the development of environmentally friendly packaging materials using biodegradable polymers has emerged as a key challenge for scientists and consumers in response to resource depletion and environmental issues caused by plastic packaging materials. Starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are being recognized as excellent candidates for producing biodegradable food packaging films. Polymer blending has emerged as a practical approach to overcome the limitations of biopolymer films by developing films with unique properties and enhancing overall performance. This review briefly introduces the molecular structure and properties of starch and PVA, summarizes the common preparation methods and properties of starch/PVA blend films, and focuses on different strategies used to enhance starch/PVA blend films, including nanoparticles, plant extracts, and cross-linking agents. Additionally, this study summarizes the application of starch/PVA blend films as active and smart packaging in food preservation systems. This study demonstrates that starch and PVA blends have potential in manufacturing biodegradable food films with excellent properties due to their excellent compatibility and intermolecular interactions, and can be used as packaging films for a variety of foods to extend their shelf life.

Abstract
Considering public health and environmental safety, the development of reliable and efficient monitoring methods is essential to ensure food quality and safety. Herein, a new Cu-based metal organic framework (Cu-ICA) nanocrystal with ammonia-sensitive performance was built up and then introduced as a functional compatibilizer of starch/polyvinyl alcohol (STA/PVA) blend to develop high-performance intelligent packaging films for food freshness monitoring. The introduction of Cu-ICA upgraded the compatibility, mechanical strength (42.9 MPa), UV-protection (with UV transmittance of only 2.8 %), and moisture/oxygen barrier performances of STA/PVA film. Furthermore, the developed STA/PVA/Cu-ICA films presented long-term colour stability, outstanding antibacterial efficacy (over 99.5 %) toward both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, as well as remarkable ammonia-sensitive discoloration capability. The STA/PVA/Cu-ICA films possessed visually identifiable colour change during the monitoring of shrimp spoilage. These findings indicate that the developed STA/PVA/Cu-ICA film possesses tremendous potential as an intelligent active packaging material.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS)-based bio-nanocomposite food packaging films were prepared via solvent-casting method by incorporating a unique combination of additives and fillers, including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), glycerol, Tween 80, castor oil (CO), and nano titanium dioxide (TiO2) in various proportions to enhance film properties. For a comprehensive analysis of the synthesized films, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile testing, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-vis spectrophotometry were employed. Furthermore, the antimicrobial efficacy of the films against S. aureus, E. coli, and A. niger was examined to assess their potential to preserve food from foodborne pathogens. The results claimed that the inclusion of castor oil and TiO2 nanoparticles considerably improved antimicrobial properties, UV-vis light barrier properties, thermal stability, optical transparency, and mechanical strength of the films, while reducing their water solubility, moisture content, water vapor and oxygen permeability. Based on the overall analysis, CS/PVA/CO/TiO2-0.3 film can be selected as the optimal one for practical applications. Furthermore, the practical application of the optimum film was evaluated using white bread as a model food product. The modified film successfully extended the shelf life of bread to 10 days, surpassing the performance of commercial LDPE packaging (6 days), and showed promising attributes for applications in the food packaging sector. These films exhibit superior antimicrobial properties, improved mechanical strength, and extended shelf life for food products, marking a sustainable and efficient alternative to conventional plastic packaging in both scientific research and industrial applications.

Abstract
The thermoplastic starch with glycerol is easy to retrograde and sensitive to hygroscopicity. In this study, branched 1,4-butanediol citrate oligomers with different molecular weights (P1, P2, and P3) are synthesized, and then mixed with glycerol (G) as the co-plasticizers to prepare thermoplastic starch (CS/PG). The results show that the molecular weight and branching degree of the branched 1,4-butanediol citrate oligomers increase as reaction time prolongs. Compared with glycerol plasticized starch, the thermoplastic starch films with branched 1,4-butanediol citrate oligomers/glycerol (10 wt%/20 wt%) have a better toughness, transmittance, and aging resistance, and have a lower crystallinity, hygroscopicity, and thermal stability. The toughness, transmittance, and aging resistance of CS/PG films are positively correlated with the molecular weight of the branched 1,4-butanediol citrate oligomers. These are due to the fact that the branched 1,4-butanediol citrate oligomer with a high molecular weight could form a stronger hydrogen bond and the more stable cross-linked structure with starch chains than that with a lower molecular weight. The elongation at break of CS/P3G film stored for 3 and 30 d are 98.0 % and 88.1 %, respectively. The mixture of branched butanediol citrate oligomers and glycerol, especially P3/G, has a potential application in the preparation of thermoplastic starch.

Abstract
This research presents a new approach to facilely fabricating a multifunctional film using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the base material. The film is modified chemically to incorporate various desirable properties such as high transparency, UV-shielding, antibacterial activity, and fluorescence. The fabrication process of this film is straightforward and efficient. The modified film showed exceptional UV-blocking capability, effectively blocking 100% of UV radiation. It also exhibits strong antibacterial properties. Additionally, the film emitted bright blue fluorescence, which can be useful in various optical and sensing applications. Despite the chemical modification, the film retained the excellent properties of PVA, including high transparency (90%) at 550 nm and good mechanical strength. Furthermore, it demonstrated remarkable stability even under harsh conditions such as exposure to long-term UV radiation, extreme temperatures (-40 or 120 °C), or immersion in different solvents. Overall, this work showcases a promising strategy to develop versatile, structurally stable, transparent, and flexible polymer films with multiple functionalities. These films have potential applications in various fields that require protection, such as packaging materials, biomedical devices, and optical components.

Abstract
A novel carbon dot/g-C3N4 nanocomposite (CCN) exhibiting enhanced photocatalytic activity was developed and used as a photoactive nanofiller to construct corn starch/carboxymethyl cellulose (CS/CMC)-based functional films. The morphologies and structures of the CCN-CS/CMC composite films were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The effects of the CCN on the physicochemical properties and antibacterial activities of the films were analyzed. The properties of the films were optimized with the addition of CCN (0.20 mg/mL), and the tensile strength of the film was increased to 11.9 MPa and the water contact angle was increased to 103.39°. The optimal active film showed > 99.9 % antibacterial efficiencies against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus under visible light and prolonged the shelf lives of bananas for more than four days compared to the 4-day shelf life of the control. This work provides a novel route for developing antimicrobial active packaging.

Abstract
Multifunctional packaging films that monitor and maintain fish freshness hold significant potential for use in the food industry. This study introduces a multifunctional intelligent packaging film comprising alizarin (ALI)-embedded cubic γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (γ-CD-MOFs) (denoted as γ-CD-MOFs@ALI) in a methylcellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (MP)-based matrix to achieve colorimetric monitoring and enhanced preservation of fish freshness. The MP/γ-CD-MOFs@ALI reveals a rapid color transition in 3 min from yellow color progressively darkens to purple as the pH increases from 2.0 to 10.0. And it is proved that the as-prepared film owns high antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus), impressive ABTS+ radical scavenging rates of 85.54 ± 1.25 %, and effective ALI sustained-release properties. The intelligent packaging film exhibits an excellent colorimetric response to total volatile basic nitrogen and provides exceptional freshness preservation performance, effectively prolonging the shelf life of Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) under 25 °C to 42 h.

Abstract
This study investigates the potential of Juncus plant fibers as a renewable source for producing cellulose nanocrystals (CNs) to reinforce polymers. Cellulose microfibers (CMFs) were extracted with a 0.43 ± 0.2 μm diameter and 69 % crystallinity through alkaline and bleaching treatments, then subjected to sulfuric acid hydrolysis, yielding four CN types (CN10, CN15, CN20 and CN30) with distinct physico-chemical properties and aspect ratios (47, 55, 57, and 60). The study assessed the influence of cellulose nanocrystals (CNs), incorporated at different weight percentages (3 %, 5 %, and 8 %), on thermal, transparency, and mechanical properties in k-carrageenan (CA) biocomposite films. The results indicate significant enhancements in these characteristics, highlighting good compatibility between CNs and CA matrix. Particularly noteworthy is the observed substantial improvement in tensile strength at an 8 wt% loading, with values of 23.43 ± 0.83 MPa for neat CA, 33.53 ± 0.83 MPa for CA-CN10, 36.67 ± 0.71 MPa for CA-CN15, 37.65 ± 0.56 MPa for CA-CN20, and 39.89 ± 0.77 MPa for CA-CN30 composites. Furthermore, the research explores the connection between the duration of hydrolysis and the properties of cellulose nanocrystals (CNs), unveiling their influence on the characteristics of nanocomposite films. Prolonged hydrolysis enhances CN crystallinity (CrI), aspect ratio, and surface charge content, consequently enhancing mechanical features like strength and flexibility in these films. These findings demonstrate the potential of Juncus plant fibers as a natural and eco-friendly resource for producing CNs that effectively reinforce polymers, making them an attractive option for diverse applications in the field.

Abstract
Active packaging relies on controlled release of antimicrobials for food protection; however, uncontrolled migration due to environmental factors poses safety and functionality challenges. This study investigated the stability of zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnONP) in poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate)/thermoplastic starch (PBAT/TPS) biopolymer film for active food packaging applications. While incorporating ZnONP significantly enhanced the properties and active functionalities (UV-light blocking, antimicrobial activity) of PBAT/TPS film, food simulants posed significant stability challenges. Notably, exposure to 3 % acetic acid (acidic food simulant) triggered complete detachment and dissolution of ZnONPs from the film surface, leading to pore formation and subsequent internal ZnO dissolution. This resulted in dramatic alterations to the bionanocomposite films, including increased opacity, water vapor permeability, and decreased thermal stability, mechanical properties, and active functionalities. In contrast, 10 % ethanol (aqueous food simulant) had minimal impact, suggesting higher ZnO stability in neutral environments. Importantly, ZnO migration analysis revealed thresholds for safe application: 1 % ZnONP for acidic food contact and up to 5 % for aqueous foodstuffs. These findings highlight the critical role of environmental factors in ZnONP stability and emphasize the need for strategic optimization of ZnO content for achieving both functionality and safety in active biopolymer packaging.

Abstract
The impact of citric acid, carboxymethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl starch, sodium trimetaphosphate, or soybean protein on the crosslinking of starch-based films was examined. These crosslinking starch films were then used to create pH-sensitive food labels using a casting method. Blueberry anthocyanins were incorporated into these smart labels as a pH-sensitive colorimetric sensor. The mechanical properties, moisture resistance, and pH responsiveness of these smart labels were then examined. Crosslinking improved the mechanical properties and pH sensitivity of the labels. These different crosslinking agents also affected the hydrophobicity of the labels to varying degrees. Soybean protein was the only additive that led to labels that could sustain their structural integrity after immersion in water for 12 h. Because it increased the hydrophobicity of the labels, which decreased their water vapor permeability, moisture content, swelling index, and water solubility by 47 %, 29 %, 52 % and 10 %, respectively. The potential of using these labels to monitor the freshness of chicken breast was then examined. Only the films containing soybean protein exhibited good pH sensitivity, high structural stability, and low pigment leakage. This combination of beneficial attributes suggests that the composite films containing starch and soybean protein may be most suitable for monitoring meat freshness.

Abstract
In this study, Cordyceps militaris matrix was employed for the first time to fabricate a biodegradable food packaging. Carmine and Ag@CuBTC were introduced to cross-link with mycelium and were uniformly dispersed within the matrix to enhance the water resistance, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties of the bio-films. The bio-film displayed high biodegradability, with nearly 100 % degradation achieved after three weeks. The bio-film exhibited exceptional resistance to oxidation (49.30 % DPPH and 93.94 % ABTS•+), as well as effective inhibitory capabilities against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The composite film maintained a high CO2/O2 selective permeability, which was advantageous for mitigating fruit metabolism and extending shelf life. Simultaneously, food preservation experiments confirmed that these bio-films can decelerate the spoilage of fruits and effectively prolong the shelf-life of food. The experimental findings indicated that the prepared Bio-R-Ag@Cu film held promise as an environmentally friendly biodegradable material for food packaging.

Abstract
Increasing demand for high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables has led to the development of innovative active packaging materials that exhibit controlled release of antimicrobial/antioxidant agents. In this study, composite biopolymer films consisting of methylcellulose (MC) and chitosan nanofibers (ChNF) were fabricated, which contained lactoferrin (LAC)-loaded silver-metal organic framework (Ag-MOF) nanoparticles. The results indicated that the nanoparticles were uniformly distributed throughout the biopolymer films, which led to improvements in tensile strength (56.1 ± 3.2 MPa), thermal stability, water solubility, swelling index, water vapor barrier properties (from 2.2 ± 2.1 to 1.9 ± 1.9 × 10-11 g. m/m2. s. Pa), and UV-shielding effects. The Ag-MOF-LAC2% films also exhibited strong and long-lasting antibacterial activity against E. coli (19.8 ± 5.2 mm) and S. aureus (20.1 ± 3.2 mm), which was attributed to the slow release of antimicrobial LAC from the films. The composite films were shown to maintain the fresh appearance of apples for at least seven days, which was attributed to their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Consequently, these composite films have the potential in the assembly of innovative active packaging materials for protecting fresh fruits and vegetables. However, further work is required to ensure their safety and economic viability.

Abstract
In this study, bioplastics with antioxidant and UV protection properties based on tannin and PVA were created for packaging uses. Using a hot water extraction method at various extraction temperatures (60-100 °C), tannins were removed from the bark of Acacia mangium. Tannins with the best antioxidant activity were extracted at 80 °C. In order to create bioplastic formulations (PVA/Tannins), the extract is then employed. The non-heating bioplastic method's preparation (M3) stage produced the highest levels of antioxidant activity. Therefore, subsequent tests were conducted using the non-heating method (M3). On the opacity, UV protective activity, antioxidant capacity, mechanical strength, thermal stability, and water vapor permeability of the resultant bioplastics, the impact of tannin concentration (0.1-0.5 g) was examined. The findings of the experiments demonstrate that PVA/Tannin bioplastics are less transparent than pure PVA. The PVA/tannin bioplastics that are formed, on the whole, show strong antioxidant and UV protection action. Comparing PVA/Tannin bioplastics to pure PVA also revealed a small improvement in thermal stability and tensile strength. In PVA bioplastics with resistant tannins, moisture content was marginally greater even at low tannin concentrations (0.1 g). Based on the findings, bioplastics made from PVA and the tannin A. mangium have the potential to be used to create packaging that is UV and active antioxidant resistant. It can be applied as the second (inner) layer of the primary packaging to protect food freshness and nutrition due to their antioxidant activity.

Abstract
There is at present an acute need for the construction of biopolymer-based smart packaging material that can be applied for the real-time visual monitoring of food freshness. Herein, a nano-sized substituted imidazolate material (SIM-1) with ammonia-sensitive and antibacterial ability was effectively manufactured and then anchored within corn starch/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA) blend to construct biopolymeric smart active packaging material. The structure, physical and functional performances of CS/PVA-based films with different content of SIM-1 (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt% on CS/PVA basis) were then explored in detail. Results revealed that the incorporated SIM-1 nanocrystals were equally anchored within the CS/PVA matrix owing to the establishment of potent hydrogen-bonding interactions, which produced an obvious improvement in the compatibility of CS/PVA blend film, as well as its mechanical strength, water/oxygen barrier and UV-screening performances. The constructed CS/PVA/SIM-1 blend films further demonstrated superior long-term color stability property, ammonia-sensitive and antibacterial functions. Furthermore, the CS/PVA/SIM-1 blend films were utilized for effectively monitoring the deterioration of shrimp via observable color alteration. The above findings suggested the potential applications of CS/PVA/SIM-1 blend films in smart active packaging.

Abstract
Currently, there is an urgent requirement for the fabrication of smart packaging materials that can be applied for the real-time visual monitoring of food freshness. In this research, cubic Co-MOF (Co-Imd) microcrystal with ammonia-sensitivity and antibacterial activity was manufactured and then anchored within sodium alginate (NaAlg) matrix to construct smart packaging materials. The structure, physical and functional performances of NaAlg-based films with different content of Co-Imd (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt% on NaAlg basis) were then evaluated in detail. Results reveal that the incorporated Co-Imd fillers are equally anchored within the NaAlg matrix due to the generation of new hydrogen-bonding interaction, which make an obvious improvement in mechanical strength, toughness, oxygen/water barrier, and UV-blocking ability of the NaAlg film. Moreover, the constructed NaAlg/Co-Imd blend films show superior antibacterial capability, ammonia-sensitivity function as well as color stability. Ultimately, the NaAlg/Co-Imd blend films were successfully utilized for indicating the deterioration of shrimp based on noticeable color alteration, suggesting their tremendous prospects for utilization in smart active packaging. This work offers a facile and efficient method for fabricating novel ammonia-sensitive and long-term color-stable NaAlg-based film materials with improved mechanical strength, toughness, oxygen/water barrier, UV-blocking, and antibacterial performances for smart active packaging application.

Abstract
A multifunctional and environmentally friendly composite film was developed by incorporating pomelo peel-derived carbon dots (PCDs) into a fish scale gelatin (FSG)/alginate dialdehyde (ADA) biopolymer matrix. ADA was used to reinforce the physicomechanical properties of the FSG film via Schiff base crosslinking. PCDs with strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The effect of various PCDs content on the surface morphological, physicochemical, and functional characteristics of the composite films was investigated. The results showed that the introduction of PCDs into the FSG/ADA matrix effectively reinforced the mechanical performance, enhanced the water vapor and water resistance, increased UV-light blocking, conferred fluorescence properties, and improved the thermal properties of the composite films. Under 3 wt% PCDs content, the FSG/ADA/PCDs-3 % composite film not only presented significant antioxidant capacity with a radical scavenging rate of 91.71 % for DPPH and approximately 100 % for ABTS, but also exhibited excellent antimicrobial ability against bacteria and fungi. Results of a preservation experiment showed that the prepared FSG/ADA/PCDs-3 % film preserved the physiological qualities of strawberries post-harvest and extended their shelf-life to 7 days at room temperature. Overall, the fabricated FSG/ADA/PCDs composite films are promising for use in eco-friendly active food packaging.

Abstract
The effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on various properties of basil seed mucilage (a heteropolysaccharide)-polyvinyl alcohol (BSM-PVA) films was investigated. Increasing concentration of ZnONPs in BSM-PVA films reduced moisture content (from 24.73 to 17.09 %), water solubility (from 36.36 to 27.65 %), water vapor permeability (from 4.66 × 10-7 to 2.55 × 10-7 g·m/m2·Pa·h), oxygen permeability (from 2.96 to 2.13 cm3 μm/m2 d kPa), and elongation at break (from 40.34 to 29.44 %), and increased ultimate tensile strength (from 16.81 to 21.48 MPa). Color and light transmission were affected by ZnONPs concentrations. The lack of formation of new peaks, along with the displacement of peaks, indicated the formation of hydrogen bonds between ZnONPs and the film matrix. Dynamic mechanical-thermal analysis showed that storage modulus and glass transition temperature increased with the concentration of ZnONPs. Scanning electron microscopy images illustrated that the addition of ZnONPs improved film integrity. X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the crystal shape of nanoparticles was preserved in the film matrix. Films containing ZnONPs showed good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (reductions ≥ 3 log CFU/cm2) and Escherichia coli (reductions ≥ 4 log CFU/cm2). Films containing ZnONPs also showed a suitable antifungal activity during the storage of wheat bread.

Abstract
Starch has great potential to replace petroleum-based plastics in food packaging applications. However, starch films often exhibit poor mechanical and barrier properties, and are vulnerable to moisture and bacterial contamination. This study proved that the incorporation of eggshell powder (ES) enhanced the hydrogen bonding in starch-based films significantly, which contributed to improved tensile strength, Young's modulus, and water resistance of the films. The performance of ES-incorporated films could be optimized by adjusting the size, concentration, and surface property of ES in the film matrix. Notably, adsorbing epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on the surface of porous ES contributed to enhanced dispersibility of the fillers in the film matrix, which increased the tortuous path of light, water vapor, and oxygen have to take through the films, resulting in increased UV screening performance, water vapor and oxygen barrier property of the films by 60 %, 7.2 %, and 27.9 %, respectively. Meanwhile, loading EGCG in ES also enable superior antibacterial activity of the final films. This study suggests that eggshell fillers offer a sustainable means of improving the functional performance of starch-based films, which may increase their application as packaging materials in the food industry.

Abstract
Nowadays, there is an increasing demand for smart packaging materials capable of effectively monitoring the food freshness. In this study, new Co-based MOF (Co-BIT) microcrystals with ammonia-sensitivity and antibacterial function were constructed and then loaded within cellulose acetate (CA) matrix to create smart active packaging materials. The influences of Co-BIT loading upon structure, physical, and functional properties of the CA films were then thoroughly explored. It was observed that microcrystalline Co-BIT was uniformly integrated inside CA matrix, which caused significant promotions in mechanical strength (from 24.12 to 39.76 MPa), water barrier (from 9.32 × 10-6 to 2.73 × 10-6 g/m·h·Pa) and ultraviolet light protection performances of CA film. Additionally, the created CA/Co-BIT films displayed striking antibacterial efficacy (>95.0 % for both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus), favorable ammonia-sensitivity function as well as color stability. Finally, the CA/Co-BIT films were successfully applied for indicating the spoilage of shrimp through discernible color changes. These findings suggest that Co-BIT loaded CA composite films have great potential for use as smart active packaging.

Abstract
Biocompatible, eco-friendly, highly economical packaging methods should be needed as conventional packaging is known to cause undesirable effects. As food packaging is the major determining factor of food safety, the selection or methods of packaging materials plays a pioneering role. With this scope, modern food technology seeks unique sustainable approaches for the fabrication of package materials with notable desired properties. The principles, features, and fabrication methodology of modern food packaging are briefly covered in this review. We extensively revealed improved packaging (nanocoating, nanolaminates, and nano clay), active packaging (antimicrobial, oxygen scavenging, and UV barrier packaging), and intelligent/smart packaging (O2 indicator, CO2 indicator, Time Temperature Indicator, freshness indicator, and pH indicator). In particular, we described the role of nanomaterials in the fabrication of packaging material. Methods for the evaluation of mechanical, barrier properties, and anti-microbial assays have been featured. The present studies suggest the possible utilization of materials in the fabrication of food packaging for the production, utilization, and distribution of safe foods without affecting nutritional values.

Abstract
Constructing biodegradable food packaging with good mechanics, gas barrier and antibacterial properties to maintain food quality is still challenge. In this work, mussel-inspired bio-interface emerged as a tool for constructing functional multilayer films. Konjac glucomannan (KGM) and tragacanth gum (TG) with physical entangled network are introduced in the core layer. Cationic polypeptide ε-polylysine (ε-PLL) and chitosan (CS) producing cationic-π interaction with adjacent aromatic residues in tannic acid (TA) are introduced in the two-sided outer layer. The triple-layer film mimics the mussel adhesive bio-interface, where cationic residues in outer layers interact with negatively charged TG in the core layer. Furthermore, a series of physical tests showed excellent performance of triple-layer film with great mechanical properties (tensile strength (TS): 21.4 MPa, elongation at break (EAB): 7.9 %), UV-shielding (almost 0 % UV transmittance), thermal stability, water, and oxygen barrier (oxygen permeability (OP): 1.14 × 10-3 g/m s Pa and water vapor permeability (WVP): 2.15 g mm/m2 day kPa). In addition, the triple-layer film demonstrated advanced degradability, antimicrobial functions, and presented good moisture-proof performance for crackers, which can be potentially applied as dry food packaging.

Abstract
Nowadays, ammonia-responsive biopolymer-based intelligent active films are of great interest for their huge potential in maintaining and monitoring the freshness of seafood. However, it is still a challenge to create biopolymer-based intelligent active films with favorable color stability, antibacterial and visual freshness indication functions. Herein, cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) nanosheets with ammonia-sensitive and antibacterial functions were successfully synthesized and then embedded into carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) matrix to develop high performance and multifunctional CMC-based intelligent active films. The influence of Co-MOF addition on the structure, physical and functional characters of CMC film was comprehensively studied. The results showed that the Co-MOF nanofillers were homogeneously embedded within the CMC matrix, bringing about remarkable promotion on tensile strength (from 45.3 to 62.2 MPa), toughness (from 0.7 to 2.3 MJ/m3), water barrier and UV-blocking performance of CMC film. Notably, the obtained CMC/Co-MOF nanocomposite films also presented excellent long-term color stability, antibacterial activity (with the bacteriostatic efficiency of 99.6 % and 99.3 % against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus), and ammonia-sensitive discoloration performance. Finally, the CMC/Co-MOF nanocomposite films were successfully applied for real-time visual monitoring of shrimp freshness. The above results demonstrate that the CMC/Co-MOF nanocomposite films possess huge potential applications in intelligent active packaging.

Abstract
Biodegradable food packaging films (FPFs) assembled from sustainable biopolymeric materials are of increasing interest to the food industry due to pollution and health risks resulting from the use of conventional plastic packaging. However, the functional performance of these FPFs is often poorer than that of plastic films, which limits their commercial application. This problem may be partly overcome by incorporating nano-additives like zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs) into the films. The incorporation of ZNPs into FPFs can improve their functional performance. The properties of these films depends on the concentration, dispersion state, and interactions of ZNPs with the biopolymeric matrix in the films. ZNPs-loaded films and coatings are highly effective at preserving a variety of fresh foods. Studies of ZNPs migration through FPFs have shown that the zinc is mainly transported in an ionic form and the amount entering foods is below safety standards. This article reviews recent developments in the design, fabrication, and application of ZNPs-loaded FPFs based on biopolymers, focusing on the impacts of ZNPs on the optical, barrier, mechanical, water sensitivity, and antimicrobial properties of the films. The potential applications of ZNPs-loaded FPFs for fresh food preservation is also discussed.

Abstract
There is a growing demand for the development of intelligent active packaging films to maintain and monitor the freshness of meat food. Herein, nano Co-based MOF (ZIF67) with ammonia-sensitive and antimicrobial functions was successfully synthesized and then integrated into cellulose acetate (CA) matrix to prepare intelligent active films. The impacts of ZIF67 incorporation on the structure, physical and functional characteristics of CA film were fully investigated. The results demonstrated that the ZIF67 nanofillers were evenly dispersed in CA matrix, resulting in remarkable improvement on tensile strength, toughness, thermal stability, UV barrier, hydrophobicity and water vapor barrier ability of CA film. Furthermore, the prepared CA/ZIF67 films exhibited superb antimicrobial and ammonia-sensitive functions. The CA/ZIF67 intelligent films turned their color from blue at beginning to brown during progressive spoilage of shrimp. These results revealed that the CA/ZIF67 films with excellent antimicrobial and ammonia-sensitive functions could be applied in intelligent active food packaging.

Abstract
Starch has attracted a lot of attention because it is biodegradable, renewable, nontoxic and low cost. By adding antibacterial substances to starch, starch-based materials have antibacterial properties. The composite with other materials can improve the comprehensive performance of starch-based materials, thus broadening the application field of the material. In this paper, we focus on antibacterial starch-based materials and review their preparation and applications. It was found that antibacterial starch-based materials were most widely used in packaging, followed by medicine, and the research on smart starch-based materials was relatively less. This review may provide some reference value for subsequent studies of starch-based materials.

Abstract
Xylan could be considered as a good potential candidate for food packaging film because of the vast source and biodegradability, however, its application was restricted by the drawbacks of poor film-forming property, humidity sensitivity, weak mechanical strength and poor antibacterial property. In this paper, xylan was firstly modified by quaternization to improve the film-forming property, then ZnO nanoparticles encapsulated by xylan (nano ZnO@Xylan) was prepared by nanoprecipitation method, finally a series of biodegradable composite films were prepared using quaternized xylan and polyvinyl alcohol with incorporation of nano ZnO@Xylan. The surface morphology, molecular structure and crystallography structure of the films were characterized. The addition of nano ZnO@Xylan decreased water vapor permeability and solubility, meanwhile obviously increased the ultraviolet shielding performance as well as the antibacterial properties of the films. The bacteriostasis rate of the films against E. coli and S. aureus reached up to 99 %. Furthermore, the preservation time of cherry tomatoes covered with ZnO@Xylan/QX/PVA films was extended to at least 21 days. In conclusion, all the results ensure that the fabricated composite films have considerable promising application in the food packaging industry.

Abstract
Bioinspired polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles were synthesized and explored as functional compatibilizers in polyvinyl alcohol/starch (PVA/ST) matrix to develop high-performance multifunctional packaging film. The effect of the addition of PDA on the microstructural, mechanical, thermal, water vapor barrier, ultraviolet (UV)/high-energy blue light (HEBL) blocking, thermal insulating and antioxidant properties of PVA/ST composite films was fully investigated. Results demonstrated that the added PDA nanoparticles were evenly dispersed in the PVA/ST matrix, providing compact and dense nanocomposite films due to their compatibilization effect. Compared with virgin PVA/ST film, the resulting PVA/ST/PDA nanocomposite films exhibited greatly improved tensile strength, toughness, thermal stability, and water vapor barrier ability. Furthermore, the presence of PDA endowed PVA/ST composite film with excellent UV/HEBL blocking, thermal insulating as well as antioxidant functions. Thus, such high-performance multifunctional nanocomposite films hold the potential of protecting food quality against photothermal oxidative deterioration and extend food shelf life.
