Abstract
Renewable natural fibers (e.g., cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)) are being applied for reinforcing bio-based polylactic acid (PLA). For improvement in the interfacial compatibility between CNCs and PLA and the dispersibility of CNCs, a quaternary ammonium salt-coated CNCs (Q-CNCs) hybrid was prepared in this study based on an esterification self-polymerization method, and such hybrid was further utilized as a new strengthening/toughening nanofiller for producing the Q-CNCs-reinforced PLA composite. The results confirmed that quaternary ammonium salt coatings could efficiently enhance CNCs/PLA interfacial compatibility via mechanical interlocking and semi-interpenetrating networks. Attributing to the synergistic effect of quaternary ammonium salts and CNCs, a considerable enhancement in processing, mechanical, and thermal properties was gained in the obtained Q-CNCs-reinforced PLA composite. With the addition of 0.5 wt% Q-CNCs, the tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break of the Q-CNCs-reinforced PLA composite was raised by approximately 23 %, 37 % and 18 %, respectively; compared with pure PLA, the obtained composite had excellent bacteriostatic properties and good transparency. This work discusses the development of high-performance, low-cost and sustainable PLA-based composites on a potential application in packaging materials.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that individual hippocampal subfields are preferentially involved in various memory-related processes. Here, we demonstrated dissociations in these memory processes in two unique individuals with near-selective bilateral damage within the hippocampus, affecting the dentate gyrus (DG) in case BL and the cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) subfield in case BR. BL was impaired in discriminating highly similar objects in memory (i.e., mnemonic discrimination) but exhibited preserved overall recognition of studied objects, regardless of similarity. Conversely, BR demonstrated impaired general recognition. These results provide evidence for the DG in discrimination processes, likely related to underlying pattern separation computations, and the CA1 in retention/retrieval.

Abstract
Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have garnered substantial attention within the field of ophthalmology and can be used to suppress scar formation after minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries. Here, by controlling mAb passive diffusion, we developed a polymeric, rate-controlling membrane reservoir loaded with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres to deliver mAb for several weeks. Different parameters were tested to ensure that the microspheres achieved a good quality characteristic, and our results showed that 1 %W/V emulsifier with 5 %W/V NaCl achieved mAb-loaded microspheres with the highest stability, encapsulation efficiency and minimal burst release. Then, we fabricated and compared 10 types of microporous films based on polylactic acid (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Our results revealed distinct pore characteristics and degradation patterns in different films due to varying polymer properties, and all the polymeric film formulations showed good biocompatibility in both human trabecular meshwork cells and human conjunctival fibroblasts. Finally, the optimized microspheres were loaded into the reservoir-type polymeric implant assembled by microporous membranes with different surface coating modifications. The implant formulation, which was fabricated by 60 PCL: 40 PEG (3 %W/V) polymer with 0.1 %W/V poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) barrier, exerted the best drug release profile that can sustained release mAb (83.6 %) for 4 weeks.

Abstract
Anthocyanin-rich steamed purple sweet potato (SPSP) is a suitable raw material to produce smart packaging films. However, the application of SPSP-based films is restricted by the low antimicrobial activity of anthocyanins. In this study, SPSP-based smart packaging films were produced by adding mandarin essential oil (MEO) as an antimicrobial agent. The impact of MEO content (3%, 6%, and 9%) on the structures, properties, and application of SPSP-based films was measured. The results showed that MEO created several pores within films and reduced the hydrogen bonding system and crystallinity of films. The dark purple color of the SPSP films was almost unchanged by MEO. MEO significantly decreased the light transmittance, water vapor permeability, and tensile strength of the films, but remarkably increased the oxygen permeability, thermal stability, and antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the films. The SPSP-MEO films showed intuitive color changes at different acid-base conditions. The purple-colored SPSP-MEO films turned blue when chilled shrimp and pork were not fresh. The MEO content greatly influenced the structures, physical properties, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the films. However, the MEO content had no impact on the color change ability of the films. The results suggested that SPSP-MEO films have potential in the smart packaging of protein-rich foods.

Abstract
Herein, carvacrol (CRV) and modified cellulose nanocrystal-zinc oxide (CNC-ZnO) were incorporated into a poly (lactic acid) (PLA) matrix to prepare a PLA-based composite film using a simple solution casting method to achieve antimicrobial effects for application in antimicrobial food packaging. Compared with films obtained from neat PLA, the PLA@CRV20%@CNC-ZnO3% composite film shows better performance in terms of mechanical properties, ultraviolet (UV) blocking, and antimicrobial effects. The PLA composites containing CRV and 3 wt% CNC-ZnO blends exhibit improved tensile strength (21.8 MPa) and elongation at break (403.1 %) as well as excellent UV resistance. In particular, CRV and the CNC-ZnO hybrid endow the obtained PLA composite films with a synergistic antibacterial effect, resulting in good antibacterial properties for microbes, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger. The diameters of the inhibition zone of the PLA@CRV20%@CNC-ZnO3% composite films against E. coli, S. aureus, and A. niger were 4.9, 5.0, and 3.4 cm, respectively. Appling the PLA@CRV20%@CNC-ZnO3% composite film as an antibacterial food packaging material, the storage period for strawberries was considerably extended. This study provides a theoretical basis for developing new organic/inorganic composite antimicrobial film materials from PLA.

Abstract
In future, global demand for low-cost-sustainable materials possessing good strength is going to increase tremendously, to replace synthetic plastic materials, thus motivating scientists towards green composites. The PLA has been the most promising sustainable bio composites, due to its inherent antibacterial property, biodegradability, eco-friendliness, and good thermal and mechanical characteristics. However, PLA has certain demerits such as poor water and gas barrier properties, and low glass transition temperature, which restricts its use in food packaging applications. To overcome this, PLA is blended with polysaccharides such as gum and cellulose to enhance the water barrier, thermal, crystallization, degradability, and mechanical properties. Moreover, the addition of these polysaccharides not only reduces the production cost but also helps in manufacturing packaging material with superior quality. Hence this review focuses on various fabrication techniques, degradation of the ternary composite, and its application in the food sector. Moreover, this review discusses the enhanced barrier and mechanical properties of the ternary blend packaging material. Incorporation of gum enhanced flexibility, while the reinforcement of cellulose improved the structural integrity of the ternary composite. The unique properties of this ternary composite make it suitable for extending the shelf life of food packaging, specifically for fruits, vegetables, and fried products. Future studies must be conducted to investigate the optimization of formulations for specific food types, explore scalability for industrial applications, and integrate these composites with emerging technologies (3D/4D printing).

Abstract
In recent years, the application of biopolymer-based nanofibers prepared via microfluidic blow spinning (MBS) for food packaging has continuously increased due to their advantages of biocompatibility, biodegradability, and safety. However, the poor spinnability, undesirable water barrier capacity, and loss of antibacterial and antioxidant properties of biopolymer-based nanofibers strictly restrict their real-world applications. In this work, carvacrol (CV) incorporated konjac glucomannan (KGM)/polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibrous films (KP-CV) were produced by MBS. The FTIR spectra and XRD analysis revealed the hydrogen bonding interactions among CV, PLA, and KGM, thus significantly improving the TS of KP-CV nanofibrous films from 0.23 to 1.27 MPa with increased content of CV from 0 % to 5 %. Besides, KP-CV nanofibrous films showed improved thermal stability, excellent hydrophobicity (WCA: 128.19°, WVP: 1.02 g mm/m2 h kPa), and sustained release of CV combined with good antioxidant activities (DPPH radical scavenging activity: 77.51 ± 1.57 %), and antibacterial properties against S. aureus (inhibition zone: 26.33 mm) and E. coli (inhibition zone: 22.67 mm). Therefore, as prepared KP-CV nanofibrous films can be potentially applied as packaging materials for the extended shelf life of cherry tomatoes.

Abstract
The development of innovative wound dressing materials is crucial for effective wound care. It's an active area of research driven by a better understanding of chronic wound pathogenesis. Addressing wound care properly is a clinical challenge, but there is a growing demand for advancements in this field. The synergy of medicinal plants and nanotechnology offers a promising approach to expedite the healing process for both acute and chronic wounds by facilitating the appropriate progression through various healing phases. Metal nanoparticles play an increasingly pivotal role in promoting efficient wound healing and preventing secondary bacterial infections. Their small size and high surface area facilitate enhanced biological interaction and penetration at the wound site. Specifically designed for topical drug delivery, these nanoparticles enable the sustained release of therapeutic molecules, such as growth factors and antibiotics. This targeted approach ensures optimal cell-to-cell interactions, proliferation, and vascularization, fostering effective and controlled wound healing. Nanoscale scaffolds have significant attention due to their attractive properties, including delivery capacity, high porosity and high surface area. They mimic the Extracellular matrix (ECM) and hence biocompatible. In response to the alarming rise of antibiotic-resistant, biohybrid nanofibrous wound dressings are gradually replacing conventional antibiotic delivery systems. This emerging class of wound dressings comprises biopolymeric nanofibers with inherent antibacterial properties, nature-derived compounds, and biofunctional agents. Nanotechnology, diminutive nanomaterials, nanoscaffolds, nanofibers, and biomaterials are harnessed for targeted drug delivery aimed at wound healing. This review article discusses the effects of nanofibrous scaffolds loaded with nanoparticles on wound healing, including biological (in vivo and in vitro) and mechanical outcomes.

Abstract
To investigate the efficacy of sodium alginate-konjac glucomannan (SA-KGM) films with anthocyanins (LRA) and tea polyphenols (TP) in meat, beef and grass carp were selected as representative meat products for preservation and freshness monitoring experiments at 4 °C. Concurrently, storage experiments of the films were conducted in this controlled environment. The results of the storage experiment showed that the films delayed meat spoilage by 2-4 days, nearly doubling the preservation time compared to the blank control. Additionally, the film exhibited significant capability to monitor the spoilage process of beef and grass carp. It was revealed by curve fitting analysis that there was a significant correlation between the color change of the film and the spoilage index of the meat. Throughout the storage experiment with the film, it was observed that moisture significantly influenced the microstructure and bonding situation of the films, thereby impacting their mechanical and barrier properties. However, the films were still able to maintain satisfactory physicochemical properties in general. The above findings were crucial in guiding the promotion of the film within the food preservation industry.

Abstract
Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is undoubtedly a potential substitute for petroleum-based non-biodegradable food packaging materials due to its renewability, high crystallinity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Nonetheless, PHB exhibits certain shortcomings, including low flexibility, moderate gas barrier properties, and negligible antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, which limit its direct application in food packaging. Loading essential oils can increase flexibility and induce antimicrobial and antioxidant activities in biopolymers but at the cost of reduced tensile strength. In contrast, nanofiller reinforcement can increase the tensile strength and barrier properties of such biopolymers. Therefore, to harness the synergistic effects of essential oil and nanofiller, PHB-based films incorporated with 5 wt% grapeseed oil (GS) and varying concentrations (0.1-1 wt%) of MgO nanoparticles (MgO NPs) were prepared in this study following simple sonication-assisted solution casting technique. Physicochemical, tensile, microstructural, optical, barrier, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties were then evaluated for the prepared composite films. FESEM analysis of the PHB-based films with 5 wt% GS and 0.7 wt% MgO NPs (PHB/5GS/0.7MgO) confirmed its compact morphology without any aggregates, pores, or phase separation. In comparison with pristine PHB, the PHB/5GS/0.7MgO films demonstrated higher tensile strength (by 1.4-fold) and flexibility (by 30-fold), along with 79 and 90 % reduction in water vapor and oxygen transmission, respectively. In addition, PHB/5GS/0.7MgO showed good UV-blocking properties, 65.25 ± 0.98 % antioxidant activity, and completely inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Moreover, PHB/5GS/0.7MgO films proved beneficial effects in terms of extending the shelf-life of white button mushrooms up to 6 days at ambient room conditions.

Abstract
Based on the key factor of spontaneous modified atmosphere packaging (MAP)-gas permeability, a spontaneous MAP film was created for the preservation of Agaricus bisporus by delaying the senescence of white mushrooms. Compared with other mixed films, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)/pueraria (P)-2 showed better mechanical properties, barrier properties and thermal stability energy. Applying the HPMC/P-2 film for preserving white mushrooms can spontaneously adjust the internal gas environment. Moreover, the O2 concentration in the package remained stable at 1-2 %, and the CO2 concentration was between 8 % and 14 %. The film can effectively reduce the respiration rate of white mushrooms, inhibit enzymatic browning, maintain their good color and texture, and delay their aging. In conclusion, the HPMC/P-2 film can be used not only for fruit and vegetables preservation but also provide theoretical basis for sustainable food packaging.

Abstract
With global enforcement of plastic bans and restrictions, the biodegradable plastic, e.g., polylactic acid (PLA), has been extensively employed as a primary substitute for traditional petroleum-based plastics. However, the growing problem associated with PLA waste accumulation is posing grand environmental challenges. In addition, although PLA has the degrading property under natural conditions, the degradation process takes too long and the degradation products cannot be recycled. In this context, enzymatic degradation of PLA arouses great attention in scientific communities. This study aims at selecting the most cost-effective protease from various enzymes and optimizing the enzymolysis conditions towards the degradation of PLA. We will demonstrate that under an optimal temperature of 45 °C, a pH vale of 11, and an enzyme concentration of 0.6 mg mL-1, the protease K would achieve a remarkable degradation efficiency (> 99 %) for PLA films within just 50 min. Finally, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and molecular docking studies reveal the mechanism behind the protease-induced PLA degradation, providing a promising direction for waste treatment and resource utilization for future biodegradable plastics.

Abstract
In this study, the intrinsic brittleness of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was overcome by chemical modification using ethyl acetate-extracted lignin (EL) via cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP). The CROP was conducted to promote homopolymerization under starvation of the initiator (oxyrane). This method resulted in the formation of lignin-based polyether (LPE). LPE exhibited enhanced interfacial compatibility with nonpolar and hydrophobic PLA owing to the fewer hydrophilic hydroxyl groups and a long polyether chain. In addition, because of the UV-protecting and radical-scavenging abilities of lignin, LPE/PLA exhibited multifunctional properties, resulting in improved chemical properties compared with the neat PLA film. Notably, one of the LPE/PLA films (EL_MCF) exhibited excellent elongation at break of 297.7 % and toughness of 39.92 MJ/m3. Furthermore, the EL_MCF film showed superior UV-protective properties of 99.52 % in UVA and 88.95 % in UVB ranges, both significantly higher than those of the PLA film, without sacrificing significant transparency in 515 nm. In addition, the radical scavenging activity improved after adding LPE to the PLA film. These results suggest that LPEs can be used as plasticizing additives in LPE/PLA composite films, offering improved physicochemical properties.

Abstract
Bacterial and fungal contamination have become major factors in fruit spoilage and damage, posing a potential risk to human health. In this work, polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibers combined with Ag2O-hemp fibers for a good antimicrobial effect were developed and applied to antimicrobial fruit fresh-keeping packages. The results of molecular simulation calculations showed that the strength of hydrogen bonds between Ag2O and hemp fibers reached 45.522 kJ·mol-1, which proved that Ag2O and with hemp fibers formed a stable deposition. The Ag2O-hemp fibers modified electrospun polylactic acid nanofibrous composite film exhibited favorable mechanical properties. The tensile strength reached 5.23 ± 0.05 MPa and the elongation at break reached 105.56 ± 3.95 %. The obtained nanofibrous composite film has good antibacterial activity against E. coli, S. aureus, A. niger, and Penicillium, which indicated that they could effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. The cell experiments proved that the nanofibrous composite film had good biocompatibility with a cell survival rate of 100 %. The experimental results on the fresh-keeping of red grapes showed that the PLA nanofibrous composite film modified by the Ag2O-hemp fibers could effectively prolong the spoilage time of red grapes at room temperature. Compared with the blank group, the freshness period of PLA nanofiber film modified by Ag2O-hemp fibers could be extended for more than 5 days. The hardness of 15 days (1.94 ± 0.19 × 105 Pa) was basically the same as that of 1 day (2.05 ± 0.06 × 105 Pa). The results were superior to commercially available PE preservation films. The above research results indicated that the Ag2O-hemp fibers modified PLA nanofibrous composite film had potential application prospects in the field of fruit fresh-keeping package.

Abstract
In this study, cinnamon essential oil and tea polyphenols were added to chitosan/ polyvinyl alcohol/ hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/ alizarin composite films to enhance their mechanical and functional properties. Their addition to the composite films enhanced their antibacterial and antioxidant properties and significantly improved its elongation at break (p < 0.05). Cinnamon essential oil reduced the water vapor permeability, water content, and water solubility of composite films and improved their transparency. The composite films with additive exhibited excellent UV-barrier ability and pH responsivity. Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction analyses confirmed hydrogen bond formation between the polymer molecules and additives. The results of Scanning Electron Microscope-Focused Ion Beam revealed improved surface and cross-section morphology of the films, leading to the generation of a cross-linked structure. Thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analysis indicated enhanced thermal stability of the composite films upon cinnamon essential oil addition. Analysis of storage quality indicators (TBARS value, TVC, and TVB-N) revealed that the composite films could prolong the freshness of surimi. The incorporation of cinnamon essential oil and tea polyphenols into the composite films has demonstrated significant potential as an effective and natural alternative for active food packaging.

Abstract
In response to rising concerns over the environmental and human health ramifications of polymers derived from petroleum, particularly in the food packaging industry, research has pivoted towards more sustainable materials. Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), selected as the polymer matrix, stands out as one of the most promising bio-based and biodegradable polymers suitable for film blowing and lamination. A layered spray-coating technique was employed to apply 1, 5, 10, and 20 layers of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) between blown PBS films, creating a three-layer laminate structure. NFC sourced from minimally processed hemp stalk waste highlights the potential for minimizing environmental impact. The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of these films, a critical parameter for food packaging, was assessed in a controlled environment at 38 °C and 90% relative humidity over a period of two months. The integration of a single NFC layer, constituting 0.35% of the composite's weight, was observed to significantly reduce the WVTR by up to 5.5-fold. It was noted that higher NFC layer counts above 10 reduced the adhesion within the laminate layers. Morphological assessments showed that the number of structural defects increased with a higher count of NFC layers. As the count of NFC layers increased, the optical transparency of the laminates dropped from approximately 65% to 25% in the visible light spectrum. Notably, by weight percent, NFC proved to be an effective barrier even without chemical modification. The developed laminates stand out as a viable, green option for food packaging, offering a sustainable and renewable solution.

Abstract
The biodegradable activity antibacterial materials have been widely applied on food preservation because they not only protect foods from pathogenic attacks but also relieve environmental pollution. Biodegradable melt-blown nonwovens (MB) have several advantages over the other materials in terms of a simpler and more environmentally friendly fabrication process, higher specific surface area, and lower cost. Herein, polylactic acid (PLA) MB is first modified by polydopamine (PDA) to activate the surface. Then, chitosan (CS) and cinnamon essential oil (CEO) are used to decorate the surface of the modified PLA MB via a simple one-pot method to prepare CEO/CS@PLA MB with different CEO contents. Compared with PLA MB, CEO/CS@PLA MB had a rougher surface and larger average fiber diameter, while the average pore diameter and air permeability reduced. The input of CEO led to a decrease in the tensile strength of CEO/CS@PLA MB and an obvious increase in the elongation at break. The combination of CS and CEO shows excellent synergistic antibacterial effect. The antibacterial efficiencies of CEO/CS@PLA MB against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus enhance with the increase of the CEO content. When the weight ratio of CS to CEO is 1:2, the antibacterial efficiencies of CEO2/CS@PLA MB against E. coli and S. aureus are 99.98 and 99.99%, respectively. When being applied to the preservation of fresh strawberry, CEO2/CS@PLA MB can effectively inhibit the microbial growth in strawberry and reduce decay, which extends the shelf time of strawberry.

Abstract
The present study developed the formulation of active bionanocomposites films endowed with the abilities of high biodegradability and antimicrobials for active packaging applications. The aim of this work was to prepare poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene succinate) (PLA/PBS) blended films reinforced with different concentrations of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and 9 % of thymol essential oil (EO) using the casting method. The active films were further evaluated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR); as well as mechanical, physical, water vapour permeability (WVP), thermal analysis (TGA), biodegradation, morphological, and antimicrobial (% reduction of bacteria) testing. The tensile strength (TS) of PLA/PBS blend films increased by 12 % with the incorporation of 2 wt% of NFC. The PLA/PBS/NFC with 9 % thymol EO has a good water barrier performance with its tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile modulus was 13.2 MPa, 13.1 %, and 513 MPa respectively. The presence of NFC promoted the disintegration of PLA/PBS films by 70.5 %. These films promoted the antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The study demonstrates that the developed films improved the qualities of chicken fillets and have great potential to be used as active bionanocomposites in food packaging applications.

Abstract
Biodegradable polymers have shown enormous potential for application in food packaging systems and offer solutions to mitigate the challenges of single-use plastics. Over the past decade, advances in fermentation technology, metabolic engineering of microorganisms, and synthetic biology have enabled the optimization and functionalization of biodegradable polymers for food packaging application. This article provides an overview of the biotechnological approaches/methods used in advancing the production of biopolymers and summarizes the recent developments in the application of functionalized biopolymers for decision-making and quality control. It discusses the current applications and future perspectives of extracellular biopolymers in food systems. Finally, this review highlights the complexities of public acceptance, safety, and government regulations and legislations.

Abstract
This literature review provides a focus on the potential of integrating the latest scientific and technological advances in the biological field to improve the status of the key steps of a food packaging life cycle: production, usage, post-usage, and long-term fate. A case study of such multi-biological food packaging is demonstrated based on the use of PHAs (polyhydroxyalkanoates) polymer, a microbiologically produced polymer from non-food renewable resources, activated by the use of bioactive components to enhance its usage benefits by reducing food loss and waste, displaying potential for reusability, compostability as post-usage, and finally, being ultimately biodegradable in most common natural conditions to considerably reduce the negative impact that persistent plastics have on the environment. We discuss how designing safe and efficient multi "bio" food packaging implies finding a compromise between sometimes contradictory functional properties. For example, active antimicrobials help preserve food but can hamper the ultimate biodegradation rate of the polymer. This review presents such antagonisms as well as techniques (e.g., coatings, nanoencapsulation) and tools (e.g., release kinetic) that can help design optimized, safe, and efficient active food packaging.

Abstract
At present, food waste has become a serious issue and the use of petroleum-based food packaging films has resulted in a series of potential hazards. Therefore, more attention has been focused on the development of new food packaging materials. The polysaccharide-based composite film loaded with active substances considered to be an excellent preservative material. A novel packaging film based on sodium alginate and konjac glucomannan (SA-KGM) blended with tea polyphenols (TP) was prepared in the present study. The excellent microstructure of films was shown by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was indicated by FTIR spectra that the components could interact with each other through hydrogen bonds, which was also confirmed by molecular docking simulation. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties, barrier property, oxidation property, antibacterial activity, and stability of the structure of the TP-SA-KGM film were significantly improved. The AFM images and results of molecular docking simulation indicated that TP could affect the cell wall of bacteria by acting with peptidoglycan. Finally, the film showed excellent preservation effects in both beef and apples, which suggested that TP-SA-KGM film could be a novel bioactive packaging material with wide application potential in food preservation.

Abstract
Biocompatible, eco-friendly, highly economical packaging methods should be needed as conventional packaging is known to cause undesirable effects. As food packaging is the major determining factor of food safety, the selection or methods of packaging materials plays a pioneering role. With this scope, modern food technology seeks unique sustainable approaches for the fabrication of package materials with notable desired properties. The principles, features, and fabrication methodology of modern food packaging are briefly covered in this review. We extensively revealed improved packaging (nanocoating, nanolaminates, and nano clay), active packaging (antimicrobial, oxygen scavenging, and UV barrier packaging), and intelligent/smart packaging (O2 indicator, CO2 indicator, Time Temperature Indicator, freshness indicator, and pH indicator). In particular, we described the role of nanomaterials in the fabrication of packaging material. Methods for the evaluation of mechanical, barrier properties, and anti-microbial assays have been featured. The present studies suggest the possible utilization of materials in the fabrication of food packaging for the production, utilization, and distribution of safe foods without affecting nutritional values.

Abstract
As the demand for botanical food additives and eco-friendly food packaging materials grows, the use of essential oils, edible biodegradable films and coatings are becoming more popular in packaging. In this review, we discussed the recent research trends in the use of natural essential oils, as well as polysaccharide-based coatings and films: from the composition of the substrates to preparing formulations for the production of film-forming technologies. Our review emphasized the functional properties of polysaccharide-based edible films that contain plant essential oils. The interactions between essential oils and other ingredients in edible films and coatings including polysaccharides, lipids, and proteins were discussed along with effects on film physical properties, essential oil release, their active role in meat preservation. We presented the opportunities and challenges related to edible films and coatings including essential oils to increase their industrial value and inform the development of edible biodegradable packaging, bio-based functional materials, and innovative food preservation technologies.

Abstract
In recent days, intelligent food packaging has gained attention due to consumers' needs and monitoring of the freshness of food. Biopolymers are used to produce matrix parts and dye chemicals, because of their unique properties, such as biodegradability and biocompatibility. In this study, alginate molecules and anthocyanins were used to produce to monitor chicken fillet freshness via pH response characteristics. Anthocyanins' color and UV characteristics at different pHs were investigated. The obtained anthocyanin solution showed visible color response at different pH level. In the red cabbage extract, the anthocyanin concentration was as 0.65 ± 0.03 mg/g. Alginate and extracted anthocyanins from red cabbage were mixed at the solution phase, then metal alginate hydrogels were synthesized via crosslinking Ca2+ and Cu2+ with alginate molecules. Due to the porous structure of the cryogels, hydrogels were freeze dried at -80 °C for 24 h at vacuum atmosphere. The obtained cryogel indicated significant color changes from pH 4 to pH 10, and at a basic environment, the color change was observed with the naked eye. The porosity amounts and sizes of the produced cryogels were examined, the average pore amount of cryogels was found to be 85.46 ± 4.36 %, and the average pore size 97.98 ± 26.20 μm. Furthermore, it was seen that the color change was not directly related to the porosity, but the interaction of anthocyanin and metal alginate matrix effected color changes degree of cryogels. Due to the electronegativity of Cu2+ ions, and the use of a low amount of anthocyanin was found to be more suitable for color change. The color was changed to blue-purple while total volatile basic nitrogen content increased to 46.67 mg/100 g from 14.00 mg/100 g. As a result, prepared cryogels should be a better candidates for use as a freshness indicator and intelligent packaging.

Abstract
Development of biodegradable polymer films is essential for sustainable energy conservation and ecological protection. In this work, to improve the processability and toughness of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films, poly(lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) segments were introduced into poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA)/poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) chains via chain branching reactions during reactive processing, and fully biodegradable/flexible PLLA/D-PLCL block polymer with long-chain branches and stereocomplex (SC) crystalline structure was prepared. Compared with neat PLLA, PLLA/D-PLCL exhibited much higher complex viscosity/storage modulus, lower tanδ values in terminal region and obvious strain-hardening behavior. Through biaxial drawing, PLLA/D-PLCL films were prepared, which showed improved uniformity and non-preferred orientation. With increasing draw ratio, the total crystallinity (Xc) and Xc for SC crystal both increased. By introduction of PDLA, the two phases of PLLA and PLCL penetrated and entangled with each other, and the phase structure transformed from "sea-island" structure to "co-continuous network" structure, which was beneficial for exerting the toughening effect of flexible PLCL molecules on PLA matrix. The tensile strength and elongation at break of PLLA/D-PLCL films increased from 51.87 MPa and 28.22 % of neat PLLA film to 70.82 MPa and 148.28 %. This work provided a new strategy for developing fully biodegradable polymer films with high performance.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to the production of an active film based on Prangos ferulacea root gum, using its leaf's essential oil (PFEO) (0-3 %) and bismuth oxide nanoparticles (Bi2O3NPs) (0-3 %). Then, the developed film was used for packaging of quail fillet. Response surface methodology was used to evaluate the effect of PFEO and Bi2O3NPs on films' properties. Optimum formulation, including 1.5 % PFEO and 1 % Bi2O3NPs, was achieved based on numerical optimization. The optimum film was produced and compared with the control film (based on Prangos ferulacea root gum, without PFEO and Bi2O3NPs). According to the results, adding PFEO and Bi2O3NPs to the film formulation increased the thickness and antioxidant activity of the film and decreased moisture content, solubility, water vapor permeability, and whiteness index (p < 0.05). The optimum film indicated high antimicrobial effects on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The pH, TVBN, TBA values, coliform, and total bacterial counts of quail fillet packed with the optimum film were lower and sensorial scores were higher than the control samples during the storage(p < 0.05).

Abstract
With the rapid pace of advancements in additive manufacturing and techniques such as fused filament fabrication (FFF), the feedstocks used in these techniques should advance as well. While available filaments can be used to print highly customizable parts, the creation of the end part is often the only function of a given feedstock. In this study, novel FFF filaments with inherent environmental sensing functionalities were created by melt-blending poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and pH indicator powders (bromothymol blue, phenolphthalein, and thymol blue). The new PLA-PEG-indicator filaments were universally more crystalline than the PLA-only filaments (33-41% vs. 19% crystallinity), but changes in thermal stability and mechanical characteristics depended upon the indicator used; filaments containing bromothymol blue and thymol blue were more thermally stable, had higher tensile strength, and were less ductile than PLA-only filaments, while filaments containing phenolphthalein were less thermally stable, had lower tensile strength, and were more ductile. When the indicator-filled filaments were exposed to acidic, neutral, and basic solutions, all filaments functioned as effective pH sensors, though the bromothymol blue-containing filament was only successful as a base indicator. The biodegradability of the new filaments was evaluated by characterizing filament samples after aging in soil and soil slurry mixtures; the amount of physical deterioration and changes in filament crystallinity suggested that the bromothymol blue filament degraded faster than PLA-only filaments, while the phenolphthalein and thymol blue filaments saw decreases in degradation rates.
