Abstract
During postharvest, table grapes are often spoiled by molds. Aspergillus sp., Alternaria sp., Botrytis sp., Cladosporium sp. and Penicillium sp. are different mold genera frequently related to table grape rot. Fungal spoilage affects nutritional value and organoleptic properties while also producing health hazards, such as mycotoxins. Traditionally, synthetic fungicides have been employed to control fungal diseases. However, possible negative effects on health and the environment are a serious concern for consumers and government entities. This review summarized data on innovative strategies proposed to diminish postharvest losses and extend table grape shelf life. Among physical, chemical, and biological strategies, either alone or in combination, the integrated management of fungal diseases is a sustainable alternative to synthetic fungicides. However, to date, only a few alternative technologies have succeeded on a commercial scale. Recent research aimed at increasing the competitiveness of alternative technologies has led to the development of integrated management strategies to prevent postharvest decay and increase the safety and quality of table grapes.

Abstract
As the third active gas signal molecule in plants, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays important roles in physiological metabolisms and biological process of fruits and vegetables during postharvest storage. In the present study, the effects of H2S on enhancing resistance against soft rot caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea and the involvement of jasmonic acid (JA) signaling pathway in kiwifruit during the storage were investigated. The results showed that 20 μL L-1 H2S fumigation restrained the disease incidence of B. dothidea-inoculated kiwifruit during storage, and delayed the decrease of firmness and the increase of soluble solids (SSC) content. H2S treatment increased the transcription levels of genes related to JA biosynthesis (AcLOX3, AcAOS, AcAOC2, and AcOPR) and signaling pathway (AcCOI1, AcJAZ5, AcMYC2, and AcERF1), as well as the JA accumulation. Meanwhile, H2S promoted the expression of defense-related genes (AcPPO, AcSOD, AcGLU, AcCHI, AcAPX, and AcCAT). Correlation analysis revealed that JA content was positively correlated with the expression levels of JA biosynthesis and defense-related genes. Overall, the results indicated that H2S could promote the increase of endogenous JA content and expression of defense-related genes by regulating the transcription levels of JA pathway-related genes, which contributed to the inhibition on the soft rot occurrence of kiwifruit.

Abstract
Methylesterases (MESs) hydrolyze carboxylic ester and are important for plant metabolism and defense. However, the understanding of MES' role in strawberries against pathogens remains limited. This study identified 15 FvMESs with a conserved catalytic triad from the Fragaria vesca genome. Spatiotemporal expression data demonstrated the upregulated expression of FvMESs in roots and developing fruits, suggesting growth involvement. The FvMES promoter regions harbored numerous stress-related cis-acting elements and transcription factors associated with plant defense mechanisms. Moreover, FvMES2 exhibited a significant response to Botrytis cinerea stress and showed a remarkable correlation with the salicylic acid (SA) signaling pathway. Molecular docking showed an efficient binding potential between FvMES2 and methyl salicylate (MeSA). The role of FvMES2 in MeSA demethylation to produce SA was further confirmed through in vitro and in vivo assays. After MeSA was applied, the transient overexpression of FvMES2 in strawberries enhanced their resistance to B. cinerea compared to wild-type plants.

Abstract
Yellow pitahaya is a tropical fruit that has gained popularity in recent years. Natural elicitors are compounds that can stimulate the resistance and quality of fruits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of natural elicitors, methyl salicylate (MeSa), methyl jasmonate (JaMe), salicylic acid (SA) and oxalic acid (OA) at concentrations of 0.1 mM (MeSa and JaMe) and 5 mM (SA and OA), applied to the yellow pitahaya fruits under greenhouse conditions. After full blossom, four applications were made with a frequency of 15 days. At the time of harvest and after storage, the following variables were evaluated: firmness (whole fruit), total soluble solids (TSS), total acidity (TA), phenolics and carotenoids (in the pulp), while phenolics, carotenoids, macronutrients and micronutrients were determined in the peel. The results showed MeSa advanced the fruit maturation, according to higher TSS, lower TA and firmness than MeJa-treated fruits, for which a delayed ripening process was shown. All treatments induced a higher polyphenolic concentration during storage. Regarding the alternative use of the peel as a by-product, the application of natural elicitors significantly increased the content of polyphenols, carotenoids, macronutrients and micronutrients in the peel, especially MeSa, which can be used as a bioactive compound in the food industry. In conclusion, the results indicate that natural elicitors can be an alternative to improve the quality and shelf life of yellow pitahaya fruits.

Abstract
In this investigation, the antifungal activity, its influence on the quality of apples, and the molecular mechanism of natamycin against Colletotrichum fructicola were systematically explored. Our findings indicated that natamycin showed significant inhibition against C. fructicola. Moreover, it efficaciously maintained the apple quality by modulating the physicochemical index. Research on the antifungal mechanism showed that natamycin altered the mycelial microstructure, disrupted the plasma membrane integrality, and decreased the ergosterol content of C. fructicola. Interestingly, the exogenous addition of ergosterol weakened the antifungal activity of natamycin. Importantly, natamycin markedly inhibited the expression of Cyp51A and Cyp51B genes in C. fructicola, which was contrary to the results obtained after treatment with triazole fungicide flusilazole. All these results exhibited sufficient proof that natamycin had enormous potential to be conducive as a promising biopreservative against C. fructicola on apples, and these findings will advance our knowledge on the mechanism of natamycin against pathogenic fungi.

Abstract
Spoilage and mycotoxin contamination of fruits cause significant economic losses and food safety issues. Synthetic chemical fungicide treatment as primary postharvest management has attracted increasing public concern in recent years, because it may cause negative effects on the environment and human health. Numerous bioactive compounds from plants have demonstrated excellent control effects on fruit spoilage and mycotoxin contamination. Plant bioactive compounds have been considered one of the most promising alternatives, because they are generally regarded as safe and environmentally friendly. Here, we reviewed the most recent advances in plant bioactive compounds in the prevention of fungal spoilage and mycotoxin contamination in fruits. The control effects of these compounds and the mechanisms involved were summarized, and current limitations and future perspectives were discussed.

Abstract
Methyl salicylate is a volatile compound, the synthesis of which takes place via the salicylic acid pathway in plants. Both compounds can be involved in the development of systemic acquired resistance and they play their role partly independently. Salicylic acid transport has an important role in long-distance signalling, but methyl salicylate has also been suggested as a phloem-based mobile signal, which can be demethylated to form salicylic acid, inducing the de-novo synthesis of salicylic acid in distal tissue. Despite the fact that salicylic acid has a protective role in abiotic stress responses and tolerance, very few investigations have been reported on the similar effects of methyl salicylate. In addition, as salicylic acid and methyl salicylate are often treated simply as the volatile and non-volatile forms of the same compound, and in several cases they also act in the same way, it is hard to highlight the differences in their mode of action. The main aim of the present review is to reveal the individual role and action mechanism of methyl salicylate in systemic acquired resistance, plant-plant communication and various stress conditions in fruits and plants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of gray mold has a great economic impact on several important crops. This necrotrophic fungus causes disease symptoms during vegetative growth and also into postharvest stages. The current method to combat this disease is fungicide application, with high economic costs and environmentally unsustainable impacts. Moreover, there is an increasing general public health concern about these strategies of crop protection. We studied the protection of tomato plants against B. cinerea by previous root treatment with menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB), a known plant defense activator. RESULTS Root treatment 48 h before inoculation with MSB 0.6 mmol L-1 reduced leaf lesion diameter by 30% and notably cell deaths, compared to control plants 72 h after inoculation. We studied the expression level of several pathogenesis-related (PR) genes from different defense transduction pathways, and found that MSB primes higher PR1 expression against B. cinerea. However, this stronger induced resistance was impaired in transgenic salicylic acid-deficient NahG line. Additionally, in the absence of pathogen challenge, MSB increased tomato plant growth by 28% after 10 days. Our data provide evidence that MSB protects tomato plants against B. cinerea by priming defense responses through the salicylic acid (SA)-dependent signaling pathway and reducing oxidative stress. CONCLUSION This work confirms the efficacy of MSB as plant defense activator against B. cinerea and presents a novel alternative to combat gray mold in important crops.

Abstract
Botrytis cinerea is a common necrotrophic fungal pathogen, leading cause of gray mold diseases in plants and fruit. Several benzimidazoles are used for controlling B. cinerea-associated infection in fruit and vegetables, but benzimidazoles resistance restricts its further uses. Therefore, it is a need for alternative drugs that control B. cinerea. Indoles are multi-faceted compounds and their structural similarities with antifungal benzimidazoles make them a choice for further investigation. Thus, the main objective of the study was to investigate the antifungal potencies of indoles against B. cinerea and to decipher the molecular mechanism involved. We conducted in vitro antifungal assays, fruit assays, and computational studies of interactions between indoles and fungal microtubule polymerase. Of the 16 halogenated indoles examined, 4-fluoroindole, 5-fluoroindole, and 7-fluoroindole (MIC range 2-5 mg/L) were found to be more potent than the fungicides fluconazole and natamycin. Fluoroindoles inhibited or eradicated B. cinerea infections in tangerines and strawberries. Molecular dynamic simulation and density functional theory showed that these fluoroindoles stably interacted with microtubule polymerase. Quantitative structure-activity relationship analyses of halogenated indoles revealed that the presence of a fluoro group in the indole moiety is essential for anti-Botrytis activity. The plausibility of the underlying antifungal mechanism was confirmed by in vitro tubulin polymerization. Collective outcomes of this study indicates that fluoroindoles could be used as alternative fungicidal agents against B. cinerea.

Abstract
Pine wilt disease (PWD), caused by the pinewood nematode, is the most destructive disease in pine forest ecosystems worldwide. Extensive research has been done on PWD, but effective disease management is yet to be devised. Generally, plants can resist pathogen attack via a combination of constitutive and inducible defenses. Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is an inducible defense that occurs by the localized infection of pathogens or treatment with elicitors. To manage PWD by SAR in pine trees, we tested previously known 12 SAR elicitors. Among them, methyl salicylate (MeSA) was found to induce resistance against PWD in Pinus densiflora seedlings. In addition, the foliar applications of the dispersible concentrate-type formulation of MeSA (MeSA 20 DC) and the emulsifiable concentrate-type formulation of MeSA (MeSA 20 EC) resulted in significantly reduced PWD in pine seedlings. In the field test using 10-year-old P. densiflora trees, MeSA 20 DC showed a 60% decrease in the development of PWD. Also, MeSA 20 EC gave the best results when applied at 0.1 mM concentration 2 and 1 weeks before pinewood nematode (PWN) inoculation in pine seedlings. qRT-PCR analysis confirmed that MeSA induced the expression of defense-related genes, indicating that MeSA can inhibit and delay the migration and reproduction of PWN in pine seedlings by modulating gene expression. These results suggest that foliar application of MeSA could reduce PWD incidence by inducing resistance and provide an economically feasible alternative to trunk-injection agents for PWD management.

Abstract
The effect of oxalic acid (OA) in determining poorly coloured table grape quality remains relatively unknown. Some red cultivars, such as seedless table grape 'Magenta' are characterised by a poor berry colour, an attribute highly demanded by the consumer. The aim of this research was to elucidate the effect of a preharvest OA treatment (5 mM) on berry colour and quality of table grape by investigating its role in berry development, on-vine ripening, and postharvest senescence. We found that OA significantly increased abscisic acid (ABA) and ABA glucose ester (ABA-GE) content in treated berries. This increase was mediated by changes in the ABA biosynthetic pathway, specifically by the upregulation of the 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (VvNCED1) gene. The accumulation of ABA in treated berries resulted in colour improvement and a higher individual and total anthocyanins content at harvest compared with control; whereas at harvest, OA-treated table grapes showed a significantly lower glucose and fructose content and a higher content of tartaric, ascorbic, and succinic acids. Furthermore, antioxidant enzyme activity was increased during berry development in OA-treated berries. On the other hand, those berries treated with OA showed a delay in loss of firmness and colour during cold storage, as well as less susceptibility to postharvest decay incidence. This effect of OA delaying the senescence process was also related to enzymatic antioxidant system stimulation. For the first time, the role of OA on increasing quality, mainly colour, in table grapes was elucidated, highlighting that this treatment upregulated ABA metabolism, relative VvNCED1 gene expression and antioxidant system, delaying postharvest berry senescence.

Abstract
From a ‘farm to fork’ perspective, there are several phases in the production chain of fruits and vegetables in which undesired microbial contaminations can attack foodstuff. In managing these diseases, harvest is a crucial point for shifting the intervention criteria. While in preharvest, pest management consists of tailored agricultural practices, in postharvest, the contaminations are treated using specific (bio)technological approaches (physical, chemical, biological). Some issues connect the ‘pre’ and ‘post’, aligning some problems and possible solution. The colonisation of undesired microorganisms in preharvest can affect the postharvest quality, influencing crop production, yield and storage. Postharvest practices can ‘amplify’ the contamination, favouring microbial spread and provoking injures of the product, which can sustain microbial growth. In this context, microbial biocontrol is a biological strategy receiving increasing interest as sustainable innovation. Microbial-based biotools can find application both to control plant diseases and to reduce contaminations on the product, and therefore, can be considered biocontrol solutions in preharvest or in postharvest. Numerous microbial antagonists (fungi, yeasts and bacteria) can be used in the field and during storage, as reported by laboratory and industrial-scale studies. This review aims to examine the main microbial-based tools potentially representing sustainable bioprotective biotechnologies, focusing on the biotools that overtake the boundaries between pre- and postharvest applications protecting quality against microbial decay.

Abstract
Postharvest diseases are the primary reason causing postharvest loss of fruits and vegetables. Although fungicides show an effective way to control postharvest diseases, the use of fungicides is gradually being restricted due to safety, environmental pollution, and resistance development in the pathogen. Induced resistance is a new strategy to control postharvest diseases by eliciting immune activity in fruits and vegetables with exogenous physical, chemical, and biological elicitors. After being stimulated by elicitors, fruits and vegetables respond immediately against pathogens. This process is actually a continuous signal transduction, including the generation, transduction, and interaction of signal molecules. Each step of response can lead to corresponding physiological functions, and ultimately induce disease resistance by upregulating the expression of disease resistance genes and activating a variety of metabolic pathways. Signal molecules not only mediate defense response alone, but also interact with other signal transduction pathways to regulate the disease resistance response. Among various signal molecules, the second messenger (reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, calcium ions) and plant hormones (salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene, and abscisic acid) play an important role in induced resistance. This article summarizes and reviews the research progress of induced resistance in recent years, and expounds the role of the above-mentioned signal molecules in induced resistance of harvested fruits and vegetables, and prospects for future research.
