Abstract
BACKGROUND The development and advancement of treatment and care options is one priority in the field of eating disorders. The inclusion of persons with lived experience with eating disorders into clinical research could enrich and accelerate this endeavor, as they can add different perspectives on the disease and its treatment. Although lived experience perspectives are increasingly part of eating disorder research, they have not been widely or structurally implemented into clinical trials and there is limited information on the practice of participatory research, its framework and consequences. AIMS The present work outlines the participatory collaboration with a lived experience council in the randomized controlled treatment trial SUSTAIN. MATERIALS & METHODS The manuscript is a participatory publication co-written by individuals with lived experience with anorexia nervosa and eating disorder researchers. RESULTS We report on motivations for this approach, our collaboration principles, structures and shared experience of working together in the trial, the potential burdens and benefits related to participation for people with lived experience. DISCUSSION We outline future directions and perspectives to integrate a participatory framework into clinical eating disorder research. CONCLUSION The involvement of people with experiential knowledge is complex, but possible in clinical research on ED and bears huge potential for the development of more effective care. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE Incorporating perspectives of people with lived experience into a participatory framework of mental health research bears huge potential on a societal level. This includes more relevant research topics and designs, more tailored and effective interventions, and facilitated implementation, as well as dissemination, higher credibility, destigmatization of mental illness, and patient empowerment. Participatory clinical research, however, needs structural anchorage within science and society.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Self-harm can be understood as any behavior individuals use to harm themselves, irrespective of motive. Evidence has extensively examined the epidemiology and function of self-harm to the individual, but less is known about the subjective processes underpinning recovery. Such insights could inform therapeutic interventions to better support individuals. The present aim was to synthesize qualitative themes from eligible literature to identify how adolescents, young adults, and those in middle adulthood conceptualize self-harm recovery and the factors impacting this process. METHODS Eleven studies were identified from a systematic search of five electronic research databases: PsycINFO, Embase, Medline, Global Health, and CINAHL. Studies were critically appraised using an adapted Critical Appraisal Skills Program tool for qualitative research. A meta-synthesis was conducted using reflexive thematic analysis to generate themes across the included studies. RESULTS Themes depicted recovery as a multidimensional, nonlinear, and subjective process, characterized by a "push and pull" between states of (re-)engagement and cessation/reduction. Transition between these states was influenced by intrapersonal and interpersonal factors which were embedded in a wider milieu of the meaning of self-harm to the individual. CONCLUSION Contemporary ideas of symptom eradication as the only marker of complete recovery may hinder individuals in the long-term, presenting an obstacle both to quality of life and therapeutic progress. Movement away from self-harm recovery as a uniform or singular phenomenon could enhance person-centered care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have established the central role of the family in the recognition, treatment, and recovery of anorexia nervosa. The objective of this study was to review, synthesize, and critically appraise the literature on parents' views on the treatment and recovery process of anorexia nervosa in their adolescent child. METHOD A systematic search of Medline, PsychINFO, CINHAL, EMBASE, Cochrane library, and SSCI was conducted for qualitative studies published regarding parents' views about the treatment of anorexia nervosa. The quality of articles was assessed using the critical appraisal skills program (CASP) and findings were analysed using thematic synthesis. RESULTS A total of 25 studies from nine countries reporting the views of 357 parents met the inclusion criteria. Four major themes were developed from the analysis: understanding the child and the disease, experience of services and treatment modalities, the role of professionals, and the experience of recovery. CONCLUSION Parents report struggles with delays in finding help, judgmental attitudes of professionals, and uncertainty about the future. Recognition of the challenges faced by parents and families empowers clinicians to build stronger therapeutic relationships essential for long-term recovery from anorexia nervosa.

Abstract
Centering the perspectives of youth with lived experience (YWLE) in psychopathology is critical to engaging in impactful clinical research to improve youth mental health outcomes. Over the past decade there has been a greater push in clinical science to include community members, and especially community members with lived experience, in all aspects of the research process. The goal of this editorial is to highlight the need for and importance of integrating YWLE into every stage of clinical science research, from idea generation to interpretation and dissemination of research findings. We identify five key problems associated with pursuing research on adolescent mental health without involvement of YWLE and propose strategies to overcome barriers to youth engagement in clinical science research. We conclude with a call to action, providing guidance to clinical scientists, institutions, and funding agencies in conducting research on youth psychopathology with YWLE.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION People diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are offered or compelled to undergo various treatments and therapies. In Sweden, the lack of highly specialised eating disorder services means that people with anorexia nervosa might be cared for in general psychiatric wards. However, there has been limited research attention paid to how this specific context might benefit or harm persons with anorexia nervosa. There is also limited evidence regarding which form of care is most effective in anorexia nervosa and which type of treatment is optimal in general psychiatric inpatient care. Our intention is to highlight personal and professional perspectives of care for patients with anorexia nervosa in this context, with a focus on person-centred care, gender and power. This protocol describes an integrative literature review aiming to synthesise existing knowledge on general psychiatric inpatient care for persons with anorexia nervosa. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The study will be an integrative literature review following Whittemore and Knafl. We will search the academic databases PubMed, CINAHL and PsycInfo in accordance with a specific search strategy determined in collaboration with a librarian with expertise on systematic reviews. Data will be analysed using a constant comparison method. Persons with their own experience of anorexia nervosa in general psychiatric inpatient care will be involved as coresearchers. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION As this is a literature review, formal ethical review is not required. The findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publication and presented at conferences related to this field. AMENDMENTS If we need to amend this protocol, we will give the date of each amendment, describe the change and give the rationale in this section. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42023426095.

Abstract
AIMS To capture the subjective experience of eating disorder patients and their immediate family members in the transition between adolescent and adult treatment services and to explore how both groups make sense of this specific experience. DESIGN Qualitative study in the form of in-depth interviews using interpretative phenomenological analysis. SETTINGS Participants were recruited from a university department of a large psychiatric hospital specialising in eating disorders between July 2021 and September 2022. PARTICIPANTS A convenience sample of 18 participants was recruited, including 12 patients aged 19-30 years (m = 22.5, SD = 3.8) and six of their respective caregivers. RESULTS Four main themes were identified in relation to the participants' experience of transition to adult care: (1) the detailed description of the transition process, (2) the emotions associated with this experience, (3) the challenges encountered and (4) recommendations for improving the process. Two fundamental meaning-making processes emerged: the feeling of being "lost in transition" and the opportunity to "become an adult". The results highlighted the factors that characterise this experience for patients and their families, and the need for practical and psychological support during the transition process. CONCLUSIONS This study provides a unique insight into the experience of patients and their immediate family members regarding the transition from adolescent to adult care. It reveals the multidimensional impact of the transition experience and highlights the need for increased support for family members. These findings may provide new insights into interventions that promote successful transition and encourage rethinking the organisation of this crucial stage of the care pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One method to improve treatment outcomes for individuals with eating disorders (EDs) may be understanding and targeting individuals' motives for engaging in DE behaviors-or the functions of DE behaviors. The goal of this study was to investigate and categorize the various functions of DE behaviors from the perspectives of adults who engage in DE behaviors and clinicians who treat EDs. METHODS Individuals who engage in DE behaviors (n = 16) and clinicians who treat EDs (n = 14) were interviewed, and a thematic analysis was conducted to determine key functions of DE behaviors. RESULTS Four main functions of DE behaviors were identified by the authors: (1) alleviating shape, weight, and eating concerns; (2) regulating emotions; (3) regulating one's self-concept; and (4) regulating interpersonal relationships/communicating with others. CONCLUSIONS Differences in participant responses, particularly regarding the relevance of alleviating shape and weight concerns as an DE behavior function, highlight the importance of individualized conceptualizations of DE behavior functions for any given client.

Abstract
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious psychiatric illness with a high mortality rate and a poor outcome. AN in adolescents can be difficult to treat. The prognosis of patients with AN depends highly on how early specialized AN treatment starts. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of healthcare professionals in treating adolescents with AN. A qualitative study approach was conducted. Through semi-structured interviews, 16 healthcare professionals, including 10 nurses, 3 dieticians and 3 physicians from the paediatric ward at a university-affiliated medical centre in central Taiwan, shared their experiences. Recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed by content analysis. Five themes and ten subthemes were identified: 1. Building a trusting relationship first: (a) spending time to build trust with the client and (b) establishing a relationship with the client's parents; 2. The key to treatment success: (a) Clients' awareness of the illness and (b) parents' support for clients; 3. Consistency of team treatment goals: (a) maintaining stable vital signs and (b) achieving caloric intake; 4. Empowerment with knowledge about anorexia: (a) continuing education for healthcare professionals and (b) interdisciplinary collaborative care; and 5. Using different interaction strategies: (a) the hard approach and (b) the soft approach. In conclusion, the findings will provide important information for healthcare professionals to apply in monitoring the psychological and emotional states of adolescents with AN. The findings indicate that healthcare professionals should invite parents to participate in the treatment, support and guide them in their adolescent care, develop scales of family stress and support for AN in adolescents, develop interventions, and establish an early therapeutic alliance.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to illuminate the meaning of nurses’ lived experiences of encounters with adult patients with anorexia nervosa in psychiatric inpatient care. Methods A qualitative phenomenological hermeneutical design was used. Personal interviews with a narrative approach were conducted with 11 nurses with experience of encountering patients with anorexia nervosa in psychiatric inpatient care. Results Three key themes were revealed: Being overwhelmed by emotions consisting of three subthemes: Bearing feelings of incomprehension, Navigating emotions, and Being disappointed and frustrated; Seeking strength to cope consisting of three subthemes: Relying on colleagues and routines, Feeling hope and motivation, and Building inner security; and Trying to build relations consisting of two subthemes: Getting closer to the patient and Relating to relatives. Conclusion Our findings illuminate the “emotional roller-coaster” which nurses are embedded in during their daily work experiences. Being able to balance one’s professional role, seeing the person behind the patient, and the illness is important in all nurse-patient encounters. An examination of nurses’ lived experiences can contribute new and important knowledge, an in-depth understanding of the nurses’ work situation, and can help identify any need for increased knowledge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parent-led weight restoration is a key intervention of family-based treatment, an empirically supported treatment for adolescent anorexia. Successful outcomes in family-based treatment depend almost entirely on parental action, yet current understandings of this intervention are primarily informed by professional theory and expert perspectives. Comparatively little is known about parents' goals and actions while implementing the treatment, despite goal-directed action being an explicit framework of family-based treatment. This study seeks to investigate parents' involvement in weight restoration from the perspective of the goal-directed actions they construct and engage in themselves and with others. This study focuses on the phenomenon of parent-led weight restoration as a project and addresses the following research question: "How do parents participate in the weight restoration of their adolescent as the adolescent recovers from anorexia nervosa?". METHOD This multicase study used the action project method and conceptual framework of contextual action theory to examine four cases of five parents engaged in actions to help their adolescent regain weight and recover from anorexia. Data were collected using multi-part interviews and analyzed according to the action project method and the multicase approach. RESULTS Parents' weight restoration projects were identified and grouped based on three common a themes. The primary theme, progressing toward health and well-being, was supported by three key processes: maintaining a holistic focus, trusting, and monitoring progress. Two secondary themes captured actions that were integral to the parents' projects, but with less prominence. Secondary themes were creating capacity, which was supported by three processes (managing emotions to maintain a helpful focus, personal work, and resourcing time and finances), and coordinating and negotiating partnerships. The socio-cultural valuing of the thin ideal emerged as a unique process salient in one case. This study presents a goal-directed and contextual perspective on how parents translated the principles of family-based treatment into their daily lives. It joins a small but growing body of work concerned with generating new understandings and frameworks for practitioners and researchers to enhance the effectiveness of family-based treatment in community settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Definitions of recovery from an eating disorder (ED) have generally been formulated around clinical conceptualisations, rather than based on the views of patients. This paper therefore asked those with lived experience of ED for their own definitions of recovery. METHOD Data were collected as part of an online study looking at EDs, autism and relationships. About 173 participants identified as recovered from ED and gave free-response definitions of recovery. Responses were subject to thematic analysis. RESULTS Seven major themes were identified: Weight restoration, lack of ED behaviours, thoughts and behaviours, cognitions, emotional responses, getting on with life, and ongoing challenges. CONCLUSIONS Many definitions of recovery given by those who have lived experience of ED echoed those used by clinicians and researchers. There were also points of divergence around the ongoing challenges of recovery. Our findings highlight the need for continuing support post-weight restoration to facilitate the successful long-term recovery for those with ED.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Young patients suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN) frequently need further treatment in Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS). The transition period from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to AMHS is a critical time, with a high risk of disengagement from healthcare. We explored physicians' perspectives of the transition to triangulate the multiple perspectives of physicians, parents and those with a lived AN experience to more comprehensively characterize the challenges in this process of treatment transition. METHODS Using purposive sampling, we recruited 16 physicians confronted with transition in AN (adult psychiatrists, child and adolescent psychiatrists and pediatrician) and conducted semi-structured interviews, which were anonymized, transcribed, and analyzed following the reflexive thematic analysis framework. RESULTS Our analysis produced three main themes. First, a shared agreement on the transition's malfunction, where participants depicted transition as a dissatisfying, violent event. Second, the conception of AN as a disorder with specific needs, challenging the transition process especially regarding physicians' engagement. Finally, the ideal transition conceived as a serene experience of separation, with unanimous agreement on the necessity to start the transition depending on patients' needs rather than their age, in order to turn transitions into moments of care. CONCLUSION Our results are in line with other qualitative research studying transition in AN and in other chronic diseases, either focusing on the experience of healthcare workers, families, or patients. Our research shows transition in AN as an anxiety-inducing experience for physicians, patients and families alike. Moreover, we highlight a gap in the way physicians perceive and assist the patient's greater autonomy, depending on their specialty. Helping physicians to manage their patient's autonomy, which is a cornerstone of the transition readiness concept, could be a very efficient way to improve transitions in AN. Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a severe disease, which most of the time starts during adolescence. Transition from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services to Adult Mental Health Services is at risk of disengagement from healthcare. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The recommended treatment for Eating Disorders (EDs) is multidisciplinary and multimodal. Nonetheless, the complex linkage of the different disciplines involved is not necessarily simple. We analyzed the experience of healthcare professionals faced with psychiatric and psychological symptoms in adolescents with EDs in two "multidisciplinary" inpatient units embedded predominantly in different paradigms - one pediatric and one psychiatric. METHODS Qualitative analysis of 20 healthcare staff members' interviews from different professional backgrounds working in inpatient units for EDs in Montreal (Canada) and Paris (France). RESULTS The "Complex patients" theme discusses the need for a global approach to the multiplicity of symptoms presented by these patients. "Management and its limits" describes the daily management of psychiatric symptoms in both units. "Psychiatry and Adolescent medicine: from opposition to collaboration" describes the different levels at which these disciplines work together and how this cooperation may be evolving. CONCLUSIONS The complex entanglement intrinsic in EDs of the patients' somatic, psychosocial, psychiatric, and adolescent problems requires collaboration between disciplines, but the modalities of this collaboration are multiple and evolve non-linearly in specialized treatment units. A multilevel approach must be offered, with the degree of collaboration (multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary) appropriate to the complexity of each adolescent's issues.

Abstract
Anorexia nervosa (AN) patients and their family-members share alexithymia, anxiety, depression, and other psychological symptoms, in the context of altered attachment. These domains have been individually studied in the context of eating disorders; few attempts have been made to study their interaction, especially including family members. In this study, alexithymia, parental-bonding, and psychopathology were assessed in 32 Italian families consisting of an adolescent AN patient, a sibling, and their parents. We aimed to (a) describe a sample of Italian families with a child affected by AN, notably including siblings; (b) investigate interactions between assessed constructs in patients and their siblings; and (c) investigate possible intergenerational effects. Results showed high alexithymia and psychopathological symptoms in patients but not in siblings, although the latter reported high obsession-compulsion and paranoid ideation scores. Patients' and siblings' alexithymia correlated with psychopathology. Parents reported generally low alexithymia. Perceived parental bonding was found to be suboptimal in most participants, yet no clear relationship was found between specific parenting styles and other measured traits, nor did we find any other relevant intergenerational effect. Anorexia nervosa implies psychological difficulties for all family members. Siblings' psychopathological traits are especially concerning and currently understudied. Implications for future research and clinical interventions are discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze eating disorder patients and nursing professionals' views and experience of the relationship-based care established. DESIGN AND METHODS A qualitative study that employs an interpretative phenomenological analysis. Nineteen patients and 19 nurses participated in the research through interviews and narrations. FINDINGS Nurses' help is both unexpected and relevant during the patients' recovery process. They provide care not focusing just on nutritional aspects, other factors such as mutual help, the psychological, emotional, social, and personal aspects are highlighted. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS This study provides a deep understanding of the relationship-based care established that makes it possible to expand knowledge and to individualize the care provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eating disorders are serious conditions that cause major suffering for patients and their families. Better knowledge about perceptions of eating disorders and their treatment, and which factors that facilitate or hinder recovery, is desired in order to develop the clinical work. We aimed to explore and synthesise experiences of eating disorders from the perspectives of those suffering from an eating disorder, their family members and health care professionals through an overarching meta-review of systematic reviews in the field. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted in the databases PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus, and CINAHL. Inclusion criteria were systematic reviews of qualitative research on experiences, perceptions, needs, or desires related to eating disorders from the perspective of patients, family members or health care professionals. Systematic reviews that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were assessed for relevance and methodological limitations by at least two researchers independently. The key findings were analysed and synthesised into themes. RESULTS We identified 17 systematic reviews that met our inclusion criteria. Of these, 13 reviews reported on the patients' perspective, five on the family members' perspective, and three on the health care professionals' perspective. The study population in the reviews was predominantly girls and young women with anorexia nervosa, whilst systematic reviews focusing on other eating disorders were scarce. The findings regarding each of the three perspectives resulted in themes that could be synthesised into three overarching themes: 1) being in control or being controlled, 2) balancing physical recovery and psychological needs, and 3) trusting relationships. CONCLUSIONS There were several similarities between the views of patients, family members and health care professionals, especially regarding the significance of building trustful therapeutic alliances that also included family members. However, the informants sometimes differed in their views, particularly on the use of the biomedical model, which was seen as helpful by health care professionals, while patients and family members felt that it failed to address their psychological distress. Acknowledging these differences is important for the understanding of anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders, and may help clinicians to broaden treatment approaches to meet the expectations of patients and family members.

Abstract
Anorexia nervosa (AN), which primarily affects adolescent girls and young women, is characterized by excessive dieting, leading to severe weight loss and a pathological fear of becoming overweight, or unhealthy behaviours that hinder weight gain. Caring for patients who have AN is particularly challenging for nursing staff, who are on the front line and have the closest contact with patients. However, little is known about how nursing staff care for adolescent patients with AN in Taiwan. This study aimed to explore nurses' perceptions on and experiences in conflict situations in caring for adolescents with AN. A qualitative study approach was conducted. Through semi-structured interviews, ten nursing staff from the paediatric ward at a university-affiliated medical centre in central Taiwan shared their experiences. Recorded interviews were transcribed and analysed by content analysis. This analysis identified three themes with eight subthemes: (i) struggling to develop therapeutic relationships, (ii) selective focusing, and (iii) difficulty changing minds. The findings of this study indicated a need for ongoing support for nursing staff, the development of therapeutic relationships with adolescent patients with AN, extensive nursing staff preparation, and the development of in-service training programs to enable nursing staff to care for these patients with greater understanding.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recent tendencies show a stabilization in Western countries of the incidence of anorexia nervosa but an increase in Asian countries where it used to be lower. The emergence of these diseases in non-Western countries suggests a culture change syndrome on an individual or societal scale. The great number of changes having occurred in China in the past decades would favor the occurrence of eating disorders. A variability of symptoms of eating disorders can be observed depending on the cultural background which also influences the treatment. There are few studies that exist within an Asian context, and they mostly focus on the care. OBJECTIVES In this study, we intend to explore the experience of Chinese female patients hospitalized for an eating disorder and the experience of their parents: their relationship with the symptoms, with their health and their understanding of the disease, in order to identify the impact of the Chinese cultural context upon the disorder. METHOD It is an observational, phenomenological and qualitative study. A purposive sampling was formed from a clinical population group of young teenagers and women, coming from various areas of China and hospitalized in the specialized Psychosomatic Department of Shanghai Mental Health Center, in August and December 2017. The degree of urbanization, the regions and ages categories were wide-ranging, allowing us to maximize the richness of the data assessing the disease and care representations. Two semi-structured interviews were realized with the participants, then with one or both parents. The interviews were realized with an evaluative interview guide by the same researcher together with a Chinese psychology student in order to clarify the translation and the interpretation of the cultural elements expressed by the participants. The analysis was based on the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Two researchers read the interview transcripts several times, identified themes then connections between the themes to build a set of meta-themes depicting the narratives. Every meta-theme was linked with its corresponding themes which necessitated during the analysis constant back and forth between the analytical data and the source material. RESULTS Thirteen female patients and 11 parents took part in the study. The patients were between 12 and 31 years of age. They showed a wide range of eating disorders: restrictive anorexia, anorexia nervosa, or bulimia nervosa. Their Body Mass Index at the time of the interview ranged from 11 to 22. Three meta-themes emerged from the analysis: concerns about thinness and health are real catalysts for seeking care, the opposition between parental beliefs about factors of good health and eating symptoms in young girls, and changes in parenting and traditional educational methods induced by eating symptoms. These different themes highlight the fear of thinness and good health being powerful therapeutic levers in China, the intergenerational agreements and disagreements on the factors of good health with the parental experience of consideration around the eating disorder of their daughter, and an impact of traditional educational modalities on the family relational aspects that change with the disorder. DISCUSSION Exploring the experience of young Chinese girls or women suffering from eating disorders highlights the complex interactions between the cultural and clinical context of eating disorders. Weight loss is experienced with great difficulty by the young women of our study, who report somatic symptoms and worry about their thinness. Our results show the central position occupied by maintaining oneself in good health in China, for parents and teenagers alike. This allows a quick reliance on healthcare. The intergenerational differences in China are increased by the rapid changes occurring within Chinese society which can cause conflicts and particularly violent struggles. Its younger generations are becoming more and more globalized. These results provide further evidence that eating disorders are culture change syndromes. The therapeutic impact of our results is twofold. On the individual level, there are therapeutic cultural levers linked with Chinese culture, and they have to be sought in all cultures. The therapeutic education of Chinese patients must be centered on the somatic consequences of the disease in order to increase the adherence to the care. On the familial level, the therapeutic approaches centered on intergenerational conflicts must be developed. CONCLUSION The rapid sociocultural changes in China are causing important intergenerational differences, notably between traditional educational modalities and the need for independence of young people who require specific familial therapy. The cultural elements must be taken into account in order to understand eating disorders and to develop relevant therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Psychiatric patients are regularly informed about diagnoses. Treatment guidelines assume that informing patients fosters functional coping processes, but few research exists on how patients respond. Thus, the objective was to develop a standardized self-report measure to assess patients reactions to diagnoses. METHODS Fifty nine items were generated based on a qualitative study. The process of item selection and determination of the factor structure were performed on a sample of 252 patients: Results of an explorative factor analysis with a randomly split sub-sample 1 were cross-validated by confirmatory factor analysis on sub-sample 2. The revised 26-item instrument was revaluated using data from an independent sample of 1.271 patients with different diagnoses. RESULTS Three functional and three dysfunctional processing styles emerged from the analyses and provided good model fit in the revaluation study (TLI = 0.935; CFI = 0.943; RMSEA = 0.051; SRMR = 0.048). Variance-analytical calculations and post hoc analyses revealed significant differences among diagnoses with regard to coping styles, such as schizophrenia was associated with self-stigmatization and anorexia nervosa showed pronounced over-identification. Overall, various diagnosis-dependent specifics were found. CONCLUSIONS As patients reactions to diagnoses vary substantially, their formation, impact on treatment and overall cause should be investigated in further studies.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE SUBJECT?: A therapeutic relationship with a professional who displays an informed approach has a positive effect on outcomes for young people presenting with an eating disorder. There is a dearth of research available on the student mental health nurse experience of working with young people with an eating disorder both internationally and from the Republic of Ireland. Within this limited literature, nursing students were found to hold more negative perceptions towards this group than more experienced clinicians. The causes of eating disorders are complex, which make education and support to understand the individual with an eating disorder essential. Within the Republic of Ireland, child and adolescent mental health historically has received very little attention in the undergraduate mental health nursing curriculum. WHAT DOES THE STUDY ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Findings from this study recommend that a set of guidelines are made available for students to feel more confident in their role. It is suggested that this resource would include the therapeutic skills to engage the young person with an eating disorder. A specialist clinical placement has been identified as the most appropriate time to consider the development of a study day or days to facilitate learning of the skills and therapeutic techniques to work with adolescents. Application of these skills would occur within the clinical learning environment under supervision and guidance of the clinical preceptor. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Specialized training for student mental health nurses working with this group will enhance confidence and competence levels in forming therapeutic relationships, thereby improving outcomes for those attending the services. Better student experience may also enhance future nursing recruitment into this area. Students need additional support in managing these often complex and ambivalent presentations and their own fears or stigma around people with an eating disorder. This is recommended as taking the form of reflective practice during the placement. There is a need for nursing management to support nurses in their role as preceptor. This would involve protected time for preceptors to engage the student nurse in clinical education and reflective practice. ABSTRACT: Introduction There is limited attention given to child and adolescent mental health in the undergraduate mental health nursing curriculum within the Republic of Ireland. There is a dearth of research available on specifically the student mental health nurse experience both internationally and from the Republic of Ireland. Aim To explore factors that impact on the experience of mental health student nurses working with adolescents who present with eating disorders. Method This qualitative descriptive study was conducted through individual semi-structured interviews with n = 4 mental health student nurses. Data were then subjected to a schematic content analysis. Results The participants experienced developing therapeutic relationships with this group as a challenging process. They believed that the theoretical component of the undergraduate programme facilitated them in their understanding but did not prepare them to engage therapeutically with these adolescents. Discussion Preceptors are identified as the main source of support but improvements to the clinical learning environment would enhance the learning experience. Implications for practice Support for the role of the preceptor in the specialist clinical setting in the form of training and protected time to engage students in clinical education and reflection was suggested as a method to enhance the clinical learning environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Therapeutic alliance is one of the most important aspects of treatment of adolescents with anorexia nervosa. Little is known about the facilitators and obstacles of its process in this situation. We aimed to explore the experience of therapeutic alliance in inpatient treatment among adolescents with anorexia nervosa, their parents and their psychiatrists. METHODS This qualitative study, using semi-structured interviews, took place in France. Data collection by purposive sampling continued until we reached theoretical sufficiency. Data analysis was thematic. RESULTS Forty-one participants were included, 15 teenaged girls, 18 parents and 8 psychiatrists. Analysis showed two themes: (1) what facilitates an alliance in treatment - with four facilitators: (a) human qualities, (b) an active role in the treatment, (c) taking time and (d) taking care of the entire family and (2) what impedes an alliance in treatment with four obstacles: (a) being too close or too distant, (b) focusing on weight, (c) control and constraints and (d) psychiatrization. CONCLUSION Collaborative work between paediatricians and psychiatrists could facilitate therapeutic alliance with parents. Definition of therapeutic alliance in this situation should be enlarged to include the adolescent-parent relationship. It is necessary to construct specific items to integrate these specific aspects to existing scales.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Doctors' burnout is a major public health issue with important harmful effects on both the healthcare system and physicians' mental health. Qualitative studies are relevant in this context, focusing as they do on the views of the physicians of how they live and understand burnout in their own professional field. OBJECTIVE To explore physicians' perspectives on burnout by applying a metasynthesis approach, including a systematic literature review and analysis of the qualitative studies. DATA SOURCES Medline, PsycINFO, EMBASE, and SSCI from the earliest available date to June 2018 REVIEW METHODS: This metasynthesis follows thematic synthesis procedures. Four databases were systematically searched for qualitative studies reporting doctors' perspectives on burnout. Article quality was assessed with the Critical Appraisal Skills Program. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes and synthesize them. RESULTS Thirty-three articles were included, covering data from more than 1589 medical doctors (68 residents and 1521 physicians). Two themes emerged from the analysis: (1) stress factors promoting burnout-ranked as organizational, then contextual and relational, and finally individual-factors and (2) protective factors, which were above all individual but also relational and organizational. CONCLUSIONS The individual and organizational levels are abundantly described in the literature, as risk factors and interventions. Our results show that doctors identify numerous organizational factors as originators of potential burnout, but envision protecting themselves individually. Relational factors, in a mediate position, should be addressed as an original axis of protection and intervention for battling doctors' burnout.

Abstract
Nurses caring for adolescent consumers with anorexia nervosa in the inpatient setting are challenged in a unique way, in that they are caring for people with whom they do not have a mutually held concept of well-being. Their efforts to ensure weight gain are frequently against the wishes of the consumer. This dissonance results in challenging interactions, where nursing care and authority may be undermined. This study investigated the dynamics of nurses' authority within this context. Interviews with nurses (n = 10) were conducted and analysed through thematic analysis. Nurses reported that consumers, compelled by the psychopathology of anorexia nervosa, often sought to challenge or undermine their authority. Some nurses experienced the opposition and conflict as demoralizing, whereas others were able to maintain confidence in the therapeutic merit of their care. Younger, inexperienced nurses in this study were particularly vulnerable to interactions that mitigated their authority, due to their tendency to engage in friend-like relationships. Nurses caring for adolescents with anorexia nervosa should be prepared to be confronted by interactions that overtly and surreptitiously undermine their capacity to exercise professional authority. It is important that nurses recognize the importance of maintaining their authority, and how it can be threatened in subtle and unexpected ways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this paper we discuss the emergence of many different methods for doing a literature review. Referring back to the early days, when there were essentially two types of review; a Cochrane systematic review and a narrative review, we identify how the term systematic review is now widely used to describe a variety of review types and how the number of available methods for doing a literature review has increased dramatically. This led us to undertake a review of current practice of those doing a literature review and the terms used to describe them. METHOD We undertook a focused mapping review and synthesis. Literature reviews; defined as papers with the terms review or synthesis in the title, published in five nursing journals between January 2017-June 2018 were identified. We recorded the type of review and how these were undertaken. RESULTS We identified more than 35 terms used to describe a literature review. Some terms reflected established methods for doing a review whilst others could not be traced to established methods and/or the description of method in the paper was limited. We also found inconsistency in how the terms were used. CONCLUSION We have identified a proliferation of terms used to describe doing a literature review; although it is not clear how many distinct methods are being used. Our review indicates a move from an era when the term narrative review was used to describe all 'non Cochrane' reviews; to a time of expansion when alternative systematic approaches were developed to enhance rigour of such narrative reviews; to the current situation in which these approaches have proliferated to the extent so that the academic discipline of doing a literature review has become muddled and confusing. We argue that an 'era of consolidation' is needed in which those undertaking reviews are explicit about the method used and ensure that their processes can be traced back to a well described, original primary source.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maudsley Family Therapy (MFT), and its manualised version, Family-Based Therapy (FBT), are the only well-established treatment interventions for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN), with treatment efficacy primarily measured by improvements in eating behaviours and weight restoration. A crucial component of this therapy is an intensive home-based refeeding intervention that requires a substantial commitment from parents for up to one year. While this treatment works to restore weight in a proportion of adolescents, very little is known about its impacts on family distress, relationships and identity, including in the 40% of families where the adolescent experiences ongoing eating disorder (ED) symptomatology and/or psychological distress during and post-treatment. Specifically, few studies have investigated the impacts of MFT/FBT treatment on family functioning or on how parents negotiate their identities, or who they understand themselves to be, in the context of this treatment intervention. This is a significant omission, given the substantive role assigned to parents to take responsibility for their child's eating restoration in the first treatment phase. This study seeks to address this gap through a qualitative exploration of parents' experiences of MFT/FBT, in cases where treatment was discontinued and/or their child continued to experience psychological distress post-treatment. METHODS 13 parents participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews that scaffolded between their experiences and ways they negotiated and sustained their identities as parents within the context of MFT/FBT for their child. Interview data was analysed through a framework of critical discursive analysis to generate themes centred on these parents' experiences and identity negotiation. RESULTS Key findings are that MFT/FBT: (1) provided a map for therapy that initially relieved parents' anxieties for their child and facilitated improvements in family functioning; (2) inadequately addressed parental guilt and blame with a form of externalisation of the illness; (3) perpetuated parental guilt by raising anxiety about AN and allocating responsibility for refeeding their child in phase 1 of the treatment; and (4) when ceased, left these parents struggling with an uncertain future, and fears for the wellbeing of their children. CONCLUSIONS The structure of MFT/FBT provided initial relief with some improvements in family communication patterns, however, when the adolescent experienced protracted ED symptoms and/or ongoing psychological distress post-treatment, these parents were left with uncertainty as to how to navigate their shifting roles and their child's ongoing struggles. This research highlights the need for treatments for adolescent AN that more comprehensively address both the adolescent and parents' psychological distress and also (re)build their senses of identity that have been challenged by AN and its effects.
