Abstract
Environmental and occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium (CrVI) is mostly renowned as a possible hepatotoxic in mammals. Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench, a phenolic-rich plant, is recurrently used for its therapeutic properties. Therefore, this investigation was done to explore whether E. purpurea (EP) root extract would have any potential health benefits against an acute dose of CrVI-induced oxidative damage and hepatotoxicity. Results revealed that GC-MS analysis of EP root extract has 26 identified components with a significant amount of total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Twenty-four Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control, EP (50 mg/kg BW/day for 21 days), CrVI (15 mg/kg BW as a single intraperitoneal dosage), and EP + CrVI, respectively. Rats treated with CrVI displayed a remarkable rise in oxidative stress markers (TBARS, H2O2, PCC), bilirubin, and lactate dehydrogenase activity, and a marked decrease in enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, transaminases, and alkaline phosphatase activities, and serum protein level. Also, CrVI administration induced apoptosis and inflammation in addition to histological and ultrastructural abnormalities in the liver tissue. The examined parameters were improved significantly in rats pretreated with EP and then intoxicated with CrVI. Conclusively, EP had a potent antioxidant activity and could be used in the modulation of CrVI-induced hepatotoxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hexavalent chromium known as oxidizing agent is able to form reactive oxygen species. Aronia melanocarpa and Hypericum perforatum are two plants known for their antioxidant effects. Our study aimed to establish if CrVI induces apoptosis and structural changes in thyrocytes and if its effect can be counteracted by the administration of both extracts. MATERIALS AND METHODS Wistar rats divided in five groups: C - distilled water (DW), Cr - 75 mg/L CrVI in DW for 3 months, Cr 2 - 75 mg/L CrVI in DW for 3 months followed by 1 month DW, CrA - 3 months 75 mg/L CrVI in DW and 1 month Aronia 2.5% extract, CrH - 3 months 75 mg/L CrVI in DW and 1 month Hypericum 2.5% extract. Histological assessment and qRT-PCR for evaluation of BAX and Bcl2 protein levels performed on thyroid samples. RESULTS The Cr and Cr2 groups were those with altered cytoarchitecture: increase in the diameter of many thyroid follicles, a decrease in their number, a decrease in the height of the follicular cells. The histological examination of the CrH group revealed almost recovery of structural architecture. The BAX gene levels were higher in the Cr and Cr2 groups indicating the apoptotic activity of chromium. In extract receiving groups the BAX gene expressions were significantly lower, but the lowest level presented the CrH group. Bcl2 gene expression levels indicate antiapoptotic activity being elevated in the Cr group, followed by CrA, Cr2, and CrH groups. The BAX/Bcl2 ratio which significantly increased in the case of the Cr and Cr2 group compared to the groups that were administered the two plant extracts. CONCLUSION The results obtained in this study confirm that CrVI has toxic effects on thyroid endocrine cells and H. perforatum has stronger antioxidant properties against the action of hexavalent chromium in thyrocytes than A. melanocarpa.

Abstract
Potassium dichromate is widely used in various laboratory and industrial applications. Vitamin C and melatonin are well-known antioxidants. Study the microscopic and morphometric alterations in the thyroid gland in adult male albino rats after the administration of potassium dichromate for successive 2 months and also to assess the possible protective effect of vitamin C versus melatonin on these changes. Sixty adult male albino rats were randomly divided into four main groups. Group I (The control group). Group II received potassium dichromate (25 mg/kg/day) dissolved in distilled water by intraperitoneal (i.p) injection for 2 months. Group III received the same dose of potassium dichromate with vitamin C (120 mg/kg/day) orally through an intragastric intubation. Group IV received the same dose of potassium dichromate and melatonin (10 mg/kg/day) as an i.p injection. Thyroid gland samples were prepared for light and electron microscopic studies. Potassium dichromate group demonstrated congested blood vessels, follicular hyperplasia, follicular enlargement with degenerated lining cells that were exfoliated in the lumen. The parafollicular cells appeared with darkly stained nuclei. PAS reaction showed weak reaction in the colloid with an abnormal pattern of vacuolization. A highly significant increase in the percentage area of fibrosis was detected in Mallory trichrome sections. Ultrastructurally, follicular cells and parafollicular cells appeared irregular in shape with dark, small heterochromatic nuclei. Small, electron-dense granules in the parafollicular cells were found. Potassium dichromate and vitamin C-treated group III showed partial improvement of the thyroid gland. The PAS reaction showed that nearly all the follicles were more or less similar to those of the control group. A significant decrease in the percentage area of fibrosis in group III was found as compared to those in group II. Potassium dichromate and melatonin-treated group showed that the thyroid gland was nearly similar to that of the control group. Vitamin C and melatonin could partially protect against potassium dichromate induced changes in the thyroid gland and the protective effect of melatonin was better than that of vitamin C.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatic and renal damage is a cisplatin (Cis)-induced deleterious effect that is a major limiting factor in clinical chemotherapy. OBJECTIVES The current study was designed to investigate the influence of pretreatment with olive leaf extract (OLE), bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC), and their conditioned media (CM-MSC) against genotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and immunotoxicity induced by cisplatin in rats. METHODS The rats were randomly divided into six groups (six rats each) as follows: Control; OLE group, treated with OLE; Cis group, treated with a single intraperitoneal dose of Cis (7 mg/kg bw); Cis + OLE group, treated with OLE and cisplatin; Cis + CM-MSC group, treated with BM-MSC conditioned media and Cis; and Cis + MSC group, treated with BM-MSC in addition to Cis. RESULTS Cis resulted in a significant deterioration in hepatic and renal functions and histological structures. Furthermore, it increased inflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and decreased glutathione (GSH) content, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in hepatic and renal tissues. Furthermore, apoptosis was evident in rat tissues. A significant increase in serum 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG), nitric oxide (NO) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and a decrease in lysozyme activity were detected in Cis-treated rats. OLE, CM-MSC, and BM-MSC have significantly ameliorated Cis-induced deterioration in hepatic and renal structure and function and improved oxidative stress and inflammatory markers, with preference to BM-MSC. Moreover, apoptosis was significantly inhibited, evident from the decreased expression of Bax and caspase-3 genes and upregulation of Bcl-2 proteins in protective groups as compared to Cis group. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that BM-MSC, CM-MSC, and OLE have beneficial effects in ameliorating cisplatin-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in the hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and genotoxicity in a rat model.

Abstract
Heavy metal Chromium (Cr), can adversely affect humans and their health if accumulated in organs of the body, such as the lungs, liver, and kidneys. Cr (VI) is highly toxic and has a higher solubility in water than Cr (III). One of the most common routes for Cr exposure is through inhalation and is associated with liver, lung, kidney damage, widespread dermatitis, GI tract damage, human lung cancer, cardiomyopathies, and cardiovascular disease. The increase in ROS production has been attributed to most of the damage caused by Cr toxicity. Cr-induced ROS-mediated oxidative stress has been seen to cause a redox imbalance affecting the antioxidant system balance in the body. The Nrf2 pathway dysregulation has been implicated in the same. Deregulation of histone acetylation and methylation has been observed, together with gene methylation in genes such as p16, MGMT, APC, hMLH1, and also miR-143 repression. Several ultra-structural changes have been observed following Cr (VI)-toxicity, including rough ER dilation, alteration in the mitochondrial membrane and nuclear membrane, pycnotic nuclei formation, and cytoplasm vacuolization. A significant change was observed in the metabolism of lipid, glucose, and the metabolism of protein after exposure to Cr. Cr-toxicity also leads to immune system dysregulations with changes seen in the expression of IL-8, IL-4, IgM, lymphocytes, and leukocytes among others. P53, as well as pro-and anti-apoptotic proteins, are involved in apoptosis. These Cr-induced damages can be alleviated via agents that restore antioxidant balance, regulate Nrf-2 levels, or increase anti-apoptotic proteins while decreasing pro-apoptotic proteins.

Abstract
A Bi12TiO20/RGO photocatalyst with polyhedron microstructure was fabricated via the template-free hydrothermal method, and the visible-light-induced photocatalytic activity of the prepared Bi12TiO20 was also evaluated by the photocatalytic reduction of heavy metal pollutants. The structures and optical properties of the prepared Bi12TiO20/RGO were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectrum (UV–vis DRS). The effects of the reaction time and mineralizer concentration on the formation of the Bi12TiO20 polyhedral microstructure were analyzed. The enhanced photocatalytic performances of Bi12TiO20/RGO were observed which were ascribed to the combination of the Bi12TiO20 microstructure induced photogenerated charges and the RGO nanostructure as a photogenerated charges carrier. The effect of organic acids, p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA), chloroacetic acid, and citric acid on the Cr(VI) photocatalytic reduction was also discussed. This work provides an insight into the design of the bismuth-based microstructure photocatalyst towards the application for environment purification of heavy metals.

Abstract
The ecosystems and human health were seriously threatened by hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in wastewater. In this article, using the idea of the highly matched energy band structure between indium sulfide (In2S3) and MIL-53(Fe), a Type-II heterojunction has been constructed by loading In2S3 on MIL-53(Fe) microrod to overcome the fault like high recombination rates of photogenerated electron-holes of In2S3. The composite with 20:1 mass ratio of In2S3 to MIL-53(Fe) (IM-2) was adopted as an optimal sample for efficient photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction under visible light. Various characterization techniques were used to verify the characteristics of composites and delved into the structure-effect relationship between this heterojunction and its activity. Results showed that the reaction rate constants of the photoreduction process over IM-2 was ~ 4 and 26 times higher than those of pure In2S3 and MIL-53(Fe), respectively, and the catalyst could maintain superior removal efficiency (88.6%) and steady crystal structure after four cycles. First-principles calculations further illustrated that the heterostructure formed between In2S3 and MIL-53(Fe) could effectively accelerate the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, thus improving the photocatalytic reduction performance. Moreover, the active species analyses revealed that the superoxide radicals and electrons were mainly involved in the reduction of Cr(VI).

Abstract
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is important in people's daily diets. Paracetamol is a widely used analgesic and antipyretic drug. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective effect of EVOO against hematotoxicity and testicular toxicity induced by paracetamol overdose in rats. Forty rats were divided into four groups. Group 1 rats were given water (control), Group 2 rats were given oral EVOO daily (2 mL/kg b.wt.), Group 3 rats were given oral paracetamol daily (650 mg/kg b.wt.), and Group 4 rats were given paracetamol and EVOO daily. After 15 days, blood and testis samples were collected for biochemical, histological, and ultrastructural studies. The results show that paracetamol decreased the PCV, Hb, and RBC counts relative to the control, and significantly increased the WBC counts and stab cells in Group 3. A significant decrease in blood testosterone was found in Group 3 compared to the control, while a significant increase in testosterone levels was observed in Group 4 compared to Group 3. Light and electron microscopy showed disorganized seminiferous tubules in Group 3. The testis in Group 4 appeared in normal shape. In conclusion, the results indicate that EVOO protects the testis and blood from paracetamol toxicity and may also increase fertility in male rats.

Abstract
The natural cosmetics market has grown since consumers became aware of the concept of natural-based ingredients. A significant number of cosmetics have an ecological impact on the environment and carry noxious and chemically potent substances. Thus, the use of natural and organic cosmetics becomes increasingly important since it is clear that topical treatment with cosmeceuticals can help improve skin rejuvenation. A substantial investigation into the benefits that fruits and plants can bring to health is required. Studies have shown that antigenotoxic properties are linked to anti-aging properties. Several studies have shown potential antigenotoxicity in natural ingredients such as Almonds (Prunus dulcis), Elderberry (Sambucus nigra), Olives (Olea europaea), and Grapes (Vitis vinifera). This review presents an overview of research conducted on these natural ingredients, the most common in the Northeast of Portugal. This region of Portugal possesses the most organic farmers, and ingredients are easily obtained. The Northeast of Portugal also has climatic, topographic, and pedological differences that contribute to agricultural diversity.

Abstract
Hexavalent chromium is a toxin that penetrates the cell, triggering reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Aronia melanocarpa, due to its proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins, and phenolic acid contents, is a valuable antioxidant. The aim was to observe the influence of hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) on the adrenal gland, and if this impact can be recovered by the administration of A. melanocarpa. Accordingly, 36 rats were divided into six groups: control; Aronia; Cr receiving Cr(VI) in distilled water for 3 months; CrA receiving a mix of Cr(VI) and A. melanocarpa at 2.5% aqueous extract for 3 months; Cr2 receiving, for 3 months, Cr(VI) in distilled water, and next, for 1 month, only distilled water; and respectively, CrA2 receiving, for 3 months, Cr(VI) in distilled water, followed by 1 month of Aronia at 2.5% extract administration. The adrenal gland samples were examined toward histological and molecular assessment, and results were statistically analyzed (ANOVA). Hexavalent chromium induced changes in the adrenal cortex expressed by focal or diffuse hypertrophies, cytoplasmic vacuolization (due to lipidic accumulation), and cells' shape and size alteration, including necrosis. These structural alterations were carried by Bax and Bcl2 gene expression: the Bax gene expression levels, increased significantly (p < 0.001) in all experimental groups, except the Aronia group, compared with control. In the Cr2, CrA, and CrA2 groups, notable reduction of Bax gene expression (p < 0.001) was reported compared with the Cr group. Regarding the Bcl2 gene expression (p < 0.001), a significant increase was observed in the experimental groups, compared with the control. The Bcl2 expression level had a similar pattern to Bax gene, consequently trying to compensate its overexpression. Aronia administered concomitantly, or after Cr(VI), diminished structural changes and expression of the studied genes, thus reducing the Bax/Bcl2 ratio and suggesting that the active ingredients from Aronia are capable of blocking apoptotic cascade induced by the pathway of Bax and Bcl2 proteins.

Abstract
Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) is widely known as a potential hepatotoxic in humans and animals and its toxicity is associated with oxidative stress. So, an in vivo study was outlined to assess the protective and therapeutic role of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil (rosemary; REO) against Cr VI-induced hepatotoxicity. Male Wistar rats were assigned into five equal groups (1st group served as control; 2nd and 3rd groups received 0.5 ml/kg BW REO and 2 mg/kg BW Cr VI, respectively; 4th group pretreated with REO then injected with K2Cr2O7; and 5th group received Cr VI then treated with REO for 3 weeks). Results revealed that rats exposed to Cr VI showed a valuable changes in hematological parameters and an increase in oxidative stress markers (Protein carbonyl, TBARS, and H2O2) and a noteworthy decline in glutathione (GSH) content. Furthermore, a considerable decrease in enzymatic antioxidants (SOD, CAT, GPx, and GST), transaminases (AST and ALT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities, as well as total protein and albumin levels, was detected, while serum liver function biomarkers were increased significantly. In addition, the evaluation of histopathological and immunohistochemical PCNA expression showed significant variations in the liver that confirm the biochemical results. Administration of REO pre- or post-chromium treatment restored the parameters cited above near to the normal values. Otherwise, individual intake with REO slumped lipid peroxidation and gotten better antioxidant status significantly. Conclusively, REO proved to be an effective antioxidant in modulating Cr VI-induced hepatotoxicity, especially in the pretreated rats.

Abstract
(1) Background: Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is responsible for a large part of many health benefits associated to Mediterranean diet as it is a fundamental ingredient of this diet. The peculiarities of this golden, highly valued product are in part due to the requirements that must be met to achieve this title, namely, it has to be obtained using exclusively mechanical procedures, its free acidity cannot be greater than 0.8%, it must not show sensory defects, and it has to possess a fruity taste. (2) Methods: All these characteristics are key factors to EVOO quality, thus the chemical composition of these many health-promoting compounds, such as unsaturated fatty acids (which are also the major compounds, especially oleic acid), as well as minor components such as tocopherols or phenolic compounds (which behave as natural antioxidants) must be preserved. (3) Results: Due to the presence of all these compounds, the daily consumption of EVOO entails health benefits such as cardioprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor properties or acting as regulator of the intestinal microbiota, among others. (4) Conclusions: Taking all together, conserving EVOO chemical composition is essential to preserve its properties, so it is worth to control certain factors during storage like exposure to light, temperature, oxygen presence or the chosen packaging material, to maintain its quality and extend its shelf-life until its consumption.

Abstract
Imidacloprid, a systemic chloro-nicotinyl insecticide belong to neonicotinoid insecticides. In this study 120 rats were divided into four groups, the first group used as a control group, the second group was administered imidacloprid at a dose of 22.5 mg/kg b.w. for 4, 8, and 12 weeks. The third group was treated with olive oil (OLO) in a dose of 10 ml/kg body weight for 2 weeks before the oral dose of imidacloprid for 4, 8, and 12 weeks. The fourth group was given OLO in a dose of 10 ml/kg b.w. for 2 weeks after exposure to imidacloprid for 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Bone marrow was collected for micronucleus and chromosomal aberrations assays. The results revealed that imidacloprid induced a mutagenic effect in the 8th and 12th weeks of exposure and OLO decreased the mutagenic effect of imidacloprid in albino rats but not completely revert them to normal. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Using OLO as a protective or therapeutic agent due to it has an ameliorative effect on mutagenicity induced by IMI.

Abstract
This study was performed to assess the ability of the food genotoxicant 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to induce DNA damage and oxidative injuries in the liver of mice as a possible mechanism of toxic action and to evaluate the role of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in inhibiting these injuries. For this purpose, 80 mice were assigned into four equal groups of 20 mice each. Group 1 was kept as control and group 2 was given 5-HMF (250 mg/kg bw) by intraperitoneal (IP) injection 3 times weekly for 4 weeks. Group 3 received EVOO (300 μl/kg bw) orally daily for 4 weeks. Group 4 was co-treated with both 5-HMF (250 mg/kg bw) with IP injection and EVOO (300 μl/kg bw) orally 3 times weekly for 4 weeks. IP injection of 5-HMF resulted in a significant decrease in albumin, globulin, and total protein contents and significant increases in alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase activities. Administration of EVOO alone or with 5-HMF reduced the 5-HMF-induced alterations and restored the liver function biomarkers, antioxidant defense system, and histoarchitecture of the liver to normal values. EVOO also inhibited the genotoxic and apoptotic effects of 5-HMF suggesting that EVOO could provide liver protection through its powerful antioxidant and confirm its good nutriceutical and pharmacological properties.

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant effects of curcuma against chromium-induced alterations in hepatic indices and dysfunctions in the antioxidant system. Forty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups and were treated for 30 consecutive days. The control group (0-0) received per os mineral water and normal diet. The second group (0-Cur) received mineral water and an experimental diet containing 2% of curcuma powder, whereas the third group (Cr-0) was orally fed (per os) with 15 mg/kg body weight/day of potassium dichromate and normal diet. The last group (Cr-Cur) received per os 15 mg/kg of potassium dichromate and a diet with 2% of curcuma. The treatment by chromium was found to elicit a perturbation in biochemical parameters producing a significant increase in glycemia, triglycerides, cholesterol, ALP, ALT, AST, and LDH levels. On the contrary, a significant reduction was observed in the oxidative stress-related parameters (GSH, GPx, CAT, and GST). Moreover, we noticed that liver sections of rats intoxicated with chromium showed a disrupted architecture. However, the administration of curcuma revealed an intense reduction in the oxidative stress induced by chromium, ameliorating the levels of the majority of the previous parameters. The data of this study revealed the potent antioxidant effects of curcuma in reducing oxidative stress damage induced by the hexavalent chromium.

Abstract
Heavy metals are well known as environmental pollutants with hazardous impacts on human and animal health because of their wide industrial usage. In the present study, the role of Spirulina platensis in reversing the oxidative stress-mediated brain injury elicited by lead acetate exposure was evaluated. In order to accomplish this aim, rats were orally administered with 300 mg/kg bw Spirulina for 15 d, before and simultaneously with an intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg bw lead acetate [6 injections through the two weeks]. As a result, the co-administration of Spirulina with lead acetate reversed the most impaired open field behavioral indices; however, this did not happen for swimming performance, inclined plane, and grip strength tests. In addition, it was observed that Spirulina diminished the lead content that accumulated in both the blood and the brain tissue of the exposed rats, and reduced the elevated levels of oxidative damage indices, and brain proinflammatory markers. Also, because of the Spirulina administration, the levels of the depleted biomarkers of antioxidant status and interleukin-10 in the lead-exposed rats were improved. Moreover, Spirulina protected the brain tissue (cerebrum and cerebellum) against the changes elicited by lead exposure, and also decreased the reactivity of HSP70 and Caspase-3 in both cerebrum and cerebellum tissues. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that Spirulina has a potential use as a food supplement in the regions highly polluted with heavy metals.
